Local venerated in volunteer week

VOLUNTEER’S week gives residents a chance to celebrate people who work to help others out of the goodness of their hearts.

Mareeba resident John Williams is one of them and has been volunteering for the Mareeba Heritage Centre and with the SES for three years.

Mr Williams underwent a back operation and was unable to sit down or drive a vehicle for long periods of time, a requirement for his coach driving job.

“Well I gotta find something

to do besides sitting in the pub or bludging around the place,” he said.

This brought Mr Williams to the Heritage Centre where he began work immediately as a volunteer.

“The pay is pretty good, nothing it’s all free,” he laughed.

Being a former Sergeant in the Australian Army Mr Williams felt that something was missing.

“Because I’m ex-military, ex-Vietnam, I thought this isn’t enough for me,” he said.

“I looked at SES they are very, very similar to the military, except you don’t carry a gun.

“Now I am a team leader over there.”

When asked if he enjoyed volunteering Mr Williams said; “Love it, absolutely love it,” “I love meeting people and talking about our area and what it has to offer.”

Mr Williams feels tremendous pride in being able to assist in the community, marching in the ANZAC Day Parade and repre-

senting the SES in all available events, Mr Williams spent some of his military days travelling all around Australia, when he retired he became a coach driver.

“When I got out of that (the Military) I did coach driving from Darwin to Perth, Then Darwin to Broome.”

“I also did tours in and around Townsville for many, many years.”

Mr Williams’s eventual settling in the Tablelands was brought on by family and prop-

erty.

“We bought two mango farms out here in Dimbulah,” he said.

“And my grandkids, my grandkids were here.

“Love the place now.”

Mr Williams can be seen in and around Mareeba, frequently seen at the Heritage Centre and all events involving the SES including the upcoming Rotary FNQ Field Days.

Mr Williams is yet another example of community members with a propensity to give back.

Community hub a step closer after govt grant THE Mareeba Shire Council has received $1,080,000 in funding courtesy of the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program to go towards a community hub at the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club site.

“Other than a small bit of potential growth on the western side of the river, this side is where the town will ultimately expand to, so moving forward this hub will be somewhat central to town,” he said.

“In addition, with this site there’s guaranteed parking space and access, so in a very practical sense I think this project will change the way Mareeba conducts business and works together as a community.”

Cr Gilmore expressed his gratitude to the State Government for their support.

“I have to say, we are so indebted to the Queensland Government for this funding, it has made this all possible,” he said.

“It will be fully grant funded, so we have to say thank you very much - it’s an extraordinary commitment and an extraordinary investment in our community.”

THE proposed community hub will provide residents with a multi-purpose space for services and activities including sport and recreation, a library service, a covered bowling green and other associated community activities and events.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said the community hub will be a major feature of Mareeba for many years into the future.

“This town has already grown and continues to grow exponentially,” he said.

“Our town is building and this is going to be part of a new paradigm and will act as an asset for all parts of the community.

“It’s not just a library and it’s not just a bowls club, it’s everything you would contemplate a town to have.

“A town of this size, which is growing and vibrant, needs this kind of facility so we’re really looking forward to it.”

Dr Patrick O’Neill leaves lasting legacy THE Tablelands and the medical fraternity lost one of its most influential figures as Dr Patrick O’Neill (pictured) passed away last week after a long battle with illness.

Dr O’Neill has been described as a “true health professional” having established a career that spanned decades, where he engaged in extremely important work right across Far North Queensland.

In an obituary written in honour of Dr O’Neill by long-time friend Barry Simpson, he spoke in depth about the lasting legacy Dr O’Neill will leave on the number of communities he practiced in.

“Dr Patrick O’Neill had a stellar medical career in major hos-

pitals and in some more remote parts of the world,” he said.

“His prowess and practice of high standards saw him serve as a medico in Nigeria, other parts of Africa, Freeport in Indonesia and other regions before he was appointed Medical Superintendent of Mareeba Hospital.”

It was there Dr O’Neill made some of his greatest impact, helping make the Mareeba and Dimbulah Hospitals what they are today.

“Dr O’Neill then worked on establishing an integrated team that oversaw the development and extension of services at Mareeba Hospital through COAG agreement and then the Tablelands District Health,” Mr Simpson said.

“He also established a formidable network of local health practitioners and worked towards the development of what is now the Dimbulah Hospital.”

Mr Simpson’s sentiments were reiterated by Mareeba Medical Clinic General Practitioner

Grant Manypeney.

“I only worked with Patrick for a limited amount of time but I got to know him quite well from both a personal and professional standpoint,” he said.

“He was always an extremely helpful and supportive colleague

who gave 110% at all times, and was someone in the field who was very inspirational to many people.

“Patrick’s gift was that he was a great planner and organiser, and hopefully his extensive work will live on after his passing.”

Dr Manypeney said Dr Patrick O’Neill is a man who will be sadly missed and he noted that he would like to wish Judy and their two sons all the best.

“It’s a shame that such a great man had to have his life end prematurely,” he said.

FNQ Field Days kicks off Today marks the start of the largest Field Days in northern Australia, right here in Mareeba.

THE three day action packed event starts today and is set to attract thousands from near and far to the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds.

The agricultural extravaganza will feature more than 500 exhibitors from all over Queensland and interstate filling the more than 600 sites. You will be able to view the latest and greatest in agricultural products and services, and support industries.

From tractors to trailers, sheds to saddles – a huge investment of time, money and resources combine to deliver state-of-the art exhibits.

While the men are taken care of with an impressive display of “big” and “little” toys, the ladies are too with a wide range of female-focused stalls selling everything from lingerie to western wear and accessories.

Rotary FNQ Field Days chair Ida Portella is “thrilled” with the level of support for the event.

“I truly expect the efforts of exhibitors will be repaid in spades with more than 18,000 people expected to file through the gates,” Ms Portella said.

“This kind of exposure is second-to-none.

“This year, we have expanded into two new areas, under part of the grandstand and to the right of the entrance gates.

“Our exhibitors deliver quality – in products, services and support – and often timely specials and deals to suit the local farmer, grower or support business.

“It’s an awesome event. “We build a whole city out here.”

To complement the exhibition area, the committee has developed an innovative and interactive attractions program, featuring some old favourites like the John Deere Tractor and Garden Tractor Pull with competitions at 10m and 2pm on Wednesday and Thursday and a display at 10am on Friday. Also returning is the vintage static tractor and engine display, alongside new events like a special beef industry forum and interactive display from the Queensland emergency services.

“The exhibit and attractions program will combine to provide a platform for a bumper event,” Ms Portella added.

Today will feature the official opening by State Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Mark Furner. Meat and Livestock Australia, together with Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, will also host BeefUp today, a beef cattle forum where guests will hear the latest about on-farm research and development and the latest insights and tools to grow a

business in the beef industry.

Rugby league legend and Queensland Safety Ambassador Shane Webcke will be in town tomorrow and will be centre stage to deliver a powerful and personal safety message, drawing on his personal, heartbreaking loss of his father in a workplace accident.

Also on Thursday night Webcke will return to be special guest at a BBQ, with everyone invited to come along.

Friday coincides with Fatality Free Friday, a nationwide

program held every year to raise road safety awareness.

In the arena, well known horsemanship clinician Geoff Toomby, and his wife Vicki, Toomby Horsemanship, will run a program over three days.

With the event held every second year, make sure you go on out over the next three days.

Mulungu development approved

THE controversial Mulungu Aborignal Corporation Primary Health Care Service proposed for 33 Robert Street and 14 Evans Street, Atherton was given the green light at last week’s Tablelands Regional Council meeting after its initial approval on February 28, 2019 was repealed.

The development was repealed after residents expressed concerns over the validity of the notification process that began on December 7, 2018 and concluded on January 4, 2019.

TRC held a second round of notification which commenced on March 19, 2019 and finished on April 10, 2019, of which garnered a total of 17 submissions courtesy of 23 submitters, with 14 of those submissions ade-

quately made.

At the council meeting last Thursday, one such resident was given the opportunity to make a presentation in front of TRC councillors and the Mayor as to why the development shouldn’t go ahead.

The speaker outlined impacts on traffic, the worsening of already existing stormwater drainage problems and the provision of alcohol as the biggest issues associated with the proposal.

TRC councillors were quite divided on the proposal when it was first approved in February, with Mayor Joe Paronella casting the deciding vote in favour of it going ahead.

TRC Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick said her position on the development has not changed.

“I think this is a very significant regional project for us, and one that reinforces Atherton and the TRC region as a hub for health and community care,” she said.

“This will be a great facility for the community as a whole, and while we have taken some of the residents’ concerns on board, we feel as a council that we haven’t left any stone unturned when it comes to weighing up alternative options and considerations.”

Eden largely echoed Cr Mellick’s comments in supporting the development.

“As a divisional councillor here I feel I have two roles,” Cr Eden said.

“One is to represent my constituents and make sure that their voices have been heard – and I feel on this occasion they have been.

“And my other role is to make decisions that are for the future wellbeing of the whole region, and sometimes you can become caught in between those two positions.

“However I’ve been thinking about this development a lot lately and I will be speaking in support of it this time.”

Kowanyama pair recognised by RFDS

TWO members of the Kowanyama airfield team have been recognised for their commitment to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) after being named Royal Flying Doctor Service Local Heroes for 2019.

Airfield Reporting Officer David Durst and refueler Raphael Lansen were acknowledged at their local Cairns base on Wednesday, and it was an honour that Mr Durst noted came as a big surprise.

“It’s a real honour to be recognised with an award like that, Raphael and I are quite thrilled about it and it definitely wasn’t something we were expecting,” he said.

“It’s a privilege as we absolutely love what we do; it’s so rewarding to see someone who is in a terrible state come out the other

side in a much better condition.

“I’m fortunate to be a part of a great team which includes Raphael and another workmate Mark Forrest - we rotate and all pitch in and help.”

Mr Durst took time to acknowledge those who have provided he and his team unwavering assistance.

“I would like to thank the enormous support from the council, they supply us with tools and equipment which help us immensely,” he said.

“I also want to recognise our families; they are always extremely supportive of us and we couldn’t do anything of this without them.”

With this award, it’s clear that David and Raphael’s work ethic and commitment to the Royal Flying Doctor Service does not

go unnoticed, and that is also the case with their colleague Mick Jess.

Mr Jess has been a pilot with the RFDS for the past 17 years, and he spoke about the enormous impact David and Raphael have had and continue to have on the aeromedical organisation.

“David and Raphael are excellent chaps who are instrumental in what we do as they are out there at all hours of the day and night,” he said.

“You get up at 2am and they’ve already run the airstrip and turned the lights on and always make sure fuel is available.”

Mr Jess said it’s very important to recognise people’s contribution to the RFDS. “We have a lot of people out in the community who help us

out tremendously, and that is all over the state,” he said.

“And it’s just nice to acknowledge these people because a lot of the time they’re just doing it out of their own good will, and that is often the case with David and Raphael.”

Fostering our youth ATHERTON State High School students Riley Vallance, Connor Le’Gear and Delma Davies delivered a presentation at last Thursday’s Tablelands Regional Council meeting to speak on the importance of the TRC endorsing the Tablelands Youth Strategic Plan 2019-24 and action working group, Mind Pod Tablelands Youth (MPTY).

The plan is for youth between 12 and 18 years of age, with it being aimed at cultivating economic development, building community capacity, fostering

innovation and sustainability for a vibrant community towards 2050 through supporting youth in the region.

The three speakers covered topics that highlighted ways for youth to have a greater voice in the community, inclusivity and mental health awareness among others.

ASHS school captain Riley Vallance said one of their key priorities is youth participation and development.

“Youth are valued by the Tablelands community and we

want to make sure they are empowered with a voice to actively participate in our civic life and influence decision making,” Riley said.

"Our goals for this priority are engagement platforms that enable youth to advocate on behalf of their fellow youths in the region.”

Riley, Connor and Delma were all met with high praise from councillors and the Tablelands Youth Strategy Plan 20192024 was moved unanimously.

“Respect the Risk” 74 LOTUS Glen correctional officers engaged in yet another show of strength las Thursday as they participated in a strike lasting 12 hours.

The strike is part of an ongoing state-wide dispute between prison officers and Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) over wages and entitlement cuts.

Together union delegate Jason Rees said officers and the department have been unable to come to an agreement despite nine rounds of negotiations.

“Together union has stated that we will continue and escalate our rolling industrial action until we come to a fair settlement,” he said.

“We’re well aware that this could take months, but it’s something we’re willing to endure because improved working conditions are desperately needed in our prisons.”

Mr Rees said while a 2.5 per cent wage increase has been of-

fered to officers, the cuts to entitlements such as longer hours without meal breaks and an operational staffing plan will prove detrimental.

“They want us to move from centre to centre on a whim that includes shift changes on 24 hours’ notice as opposed to 72,” he said.

“So now we’ve ended up fighting about the entitlements being taken from us rather than what we initially asked for.”

Another issue raised by Mr Rees and Together union was the alternative option presented by QCS, which was a pay increase to the tune of 6 per cent.

“That is correct that we have been offered a 6 per cent increase, however in doing so we would be going back three years to an old pay classification level system where they had point barriers,” he said.

“So as far as we’re concerned that is just going backwards.”

In addition, Mr Rees said the entitlements being taken from officers endanger them in the workplace. “As they try to casualise the workforce, the workload increases at the same rate the violence increases,” he said.

“And this is in line with the overcrowding in prisons that the government has failed to do anything about.”

While this disagreement could be seen across the state for some time to come, Mr Rees pointed out that Lotus Glen officers are using the displays of industrial action as an opportunity to give back to the community.

“We make sure when we have industrial action that we put a bit of time towards charity,” he said.

“Last week it was helping out at the Mareeba Men’s Shed, and today we have raised hundreds of dollars to go towards the Indie Rose Foundation, which is “helping sick kids, supporting families”.

Lotus Glen officers engaged in their fourth display of industrial action this month in a bid to secure better pay and improved working conditions.

TRC funding to deliver improved water infrastructure THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is the beneficiary of $3.9 and $3.41 million dollars in State Government funding courtesy of the Local Governments Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP) and the Works For Queensland program respectively.

The funding will be used for the TRC’s Tablelands Water Quality Improvement Plan,

which is aimed at delivering critical water infrastructure that will improve the reliability and quality available to residents in the region.

In addition to the State Government’s commitment, TRC are contributing $1 million to the plan, which Mayor Joe Paronella said will work to reduce the frequency and length of boil water notices.

“We kept advocating the need for this in the community and this will hopefully be able to ensure our water supply in the region is second to none in the years to come,” Cr Paronella said.

“This funding is something we didn’t expect, however we pushed hard for it by speaking with ministers and I can’t overstate the importance of receiv-

ing this money as it is a wonderful achievement.”

The $8.3 million program will include extending pipelines and augmenting bore water supplies in the Atherton area to alleviate the prolonged boil water notices for Ravenshoe Rd, Carrington Rd and Hastie Rd areas.

The Ravenshoe, Millstream, Bellview and Cassowary water supply schemes will either be

provided with alternative water supply (like bores), or improved treatment capacity, depending on what the TRC’s detailed investigations find.

Cr Paronella noted that he would like to recognise those who have contributed in successfully obtaining the funding.

“I’d like to congratulate the councillors and the officers who have done so much work behind

the scenes to make sure that we got the message across to the State Government,” he said.

“This is an expensive exercise as you can see and while this is only the first step, this is a significant result for our community.”

The works are scheduled to start in the new financial year and will be delivered in 12 months.

FARM safety is one of the core themes at this year’s Rotary FNQ Field Days event, and visitors will have a unique opportunity to see the intricacies of accident prevention and simulated rescue situations as the Emergency Services will be hosting three ‘Farm Safety Rescue’ demonstrations over the three days.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Fire and Rescue Station Officer Darryl Chaplain said the demonstrations will display how to best manage scenarios such as roll-overs, stabilisation and casualty management among others.

“Each day’s demonstration will consist of a different type of vehicle and machinery, of which will include a tractor, cherry

picker and either some sort of farm vehicle or four-wheeler,” he said.

“It’s an informative display and one that is quite pertinent at the moment, with there having been some tragic accidents happening as of late.

“It will hopefully provide those in attendance greater knowledge on the equipment and skills needed in a farm accident.”

In addition, Mr Chaplain said there will be a range of equipment on site such as appliances, rescue tools and protective gear available at the event.

Mr Chaplain said it’s fantastic to see the Rotary FNQ Field Days getting on board and putting farm safety as one of the event’s themes.

“Farm accidents have an enormous impact on those involved and their families,” he said.

“People who experience accidents often struggle with mental health issues in the aftermath, so I think it’s great that mental health is another one of the core themes of the Field Days.”

Mr Chaplain said with a number of Emergency Services teams attending the Rotary FNQ Field Days, the event will also act as an opportunity for them to recruit anyone who has an interest in pursuing it as a profession.

For those interested in attending the demonstrations, they will take place from 11:30am12:15pm today, Wednesday May 29, tomorrow May 30 and Friday May 31.

St Stephen's student shines at ANZAC forum A LOCAL Mareeba student was commended at the “We Will Remember” forum in Innisfail a fortnight ago.

St Stephen's Catholic College Year 8 student Caitlin Wadley presented a speech about her own interpretation of the ANZAC spirit. As winner of the forum Caitlin will be travelling down to Canberra and presenting her speech to the current chief of the Australian Army.

When asked about the forum Caitlin said she had a great time.

“It was really good to be there with all those like minded students,” she said.

“Getting to meet all those

amazing people, it was a great experience.”

Caitlin conducted her speech on her interpretation of the ANZAC spirit being that “youth are continuing the ANZAC spirit by learning from their parents.”

“The ideals of mateship, courage and endurance are the things that youth need to be thinking about today.”

“I was quite surprised that I won.

“Everyone there had such amazing speeches but I’m really lucky to get to go down to Canberra.”

Caitlin is very excited to be going to Canberra and showing

her speech to the chief of the Australian Army.

“I’m nervous because that’s a big opportunity but also excited to share with him my point of view.”

Caitlin’s war history and opinions stems back 2 generations with both her father and uncle serving in the navy and her grandfather serving in WW2.

“I’ve heard a lot of war stories and how much it means to them,” she said.

“So I feel like I have some sort of understanding so I had a go.”

Tragic rollover on farm

85-YEAR-OLD Chewko man Antonio Niceforo tragically died on Monday after becoming trapped under a tractor at a Narcotic Creek Road cane farm.

Tablelands police Acting Inspector Greg Giles said the deceased was last seen at about 8am, after he headed down to a neighbouring property to slash.

“He then went over to see what the issue was and unfortunately found his father underneath the tractor, so he travelled to a neighbouring property and got a second tractor with a forklift attached to it to lift it off the deceased.”

Inspector Giles said paramedics arrived at 12:27pm and pronounced Mr Niceforo dead at the scene.

Search begins for new Rodeo Queen NOMINATIONS are now open for the 2019 Mareeba Rodeo Queen competition.

The Rodeo weekend doesn’t start until July 13, but for those young ladies out there looking to be part of this iconic event, nominations are now open.

Entrants from previous years all express how much they enjoyed the competition, how much confidence they gained from entering and the long lasting friendships they created.

Applicants are also enjoyed the workshops held over two weeks.

In order to be eligible an entrant must be sponsored by a local business.

The girls are judged on their general knowledge, rodeo knowledge, general conversation skills, appearance, personality, deportment, speech and

manners. All of these areas are covered in the workshops.

The judges then select a Rodeo Queen and Princess based on these categories, and all of the girls then vote for Miss Popularity.

As the Mareeba Rodeo will be celebrating its 70 year anniversary, a high turnout is expected along with a high number of Queen entrants.

Excitement building for 2019 Malanda Show WITH 2019 show festivities due to commence next month, the hype, excitement and planning is well underway for this year’s Malanda Show.

This year’s events are set to thrill, entertain and engage people of all ages. The main event, the three day show, will take place on July 5, 6 and 7, which is the middle weekend of the school holidays – perfect timing for families from afar to plan a trip to the Tablelands. ing the animal competitions and displays (dairy and beef cattle, goats, horses, poultry and gorgeous animal nurseries), pavilion full of culinary treats and craft and, of course, side show alley.

Kicking off the weekend on the Friday evening will be the ever-popular Ergon Energy street parade – always a highlight of the Malanda Show. The theme for the 2019 Street Parade is Heroes – local heroes, super heroes, emergency services or armed forces. All sorts of vehicles from vintage to machinery, as well

as elaborate costumes, walking processions, marching bands, decorated bikes and, of course, those wonderfully creative floats.

Dairy Queens and Princesses will, this year, feature on their sponsor’s float, providing spectators with the chance to cheer them on before the 2019 Queen and Princess are announced at the official opening of the show at the showgrounds.

Saturday promises a full day of competition in the dairy, stud and main arena areas culminating with a spectacular Emergency

Services fireworks display in the evening. Sunday provides an opportunity to see the inner farmer in you shine with the Farmer’s Challenge, as well as the Grand Parade, Celebrity Hand Milking Competition, equestrian high jumping and dog show in Jack May Park. Even the bar area will be rocking with Discotechnics on Friday evening and Riding and Moore on Saturday night until late.

You can also enjoy visiting the homebrew section and vintage tractor display, as well as

some of the brand new and exciting events and displays planned this year. Competition and exhibits will increase to include fairy creature garden creations, biggest pumpkin and scarecrow competition.

RACQ calls on Government to deliver on election promises THE State’s peak motoring body has congratulated the Liberal National Party on its return to Federal Government but warned it would hold the Coalition accountable to ensure Queenslanders received transport funds promised during the election campaign.

RACQ’s Head of Public Policy Rebecca Michael urged the Government to

deliver on projects like the Pacific Motorway and Bruce Highway upgrades.

“Parts of Queensland’s road network just aren’t up to scratch – it’s costing us all time spent stuck in traffic and sadly, the lives of loved ones,” Dr Michael said.

“Road safety isn’t a partisan issue and nows the time for our leaders to step up to

the mark and to work with other levels of government to help close the funding gaps delaying the delivery of vital projects.”

Dr Michael said the Club was pleased to see more than $4 billion in extra commitments made towards some of its priority projects across Queensland.

“In the State’s south east,

we’ve seen a full commitment to help deliver some of our big wish list items including additional lanes on the Pacific Motorway between Varsity and Tugun, and the Gateway Motorway to Loganholme,” she said.

“We’ve also been promised much needed upgrades to the Gateway and Ipswich motorways to relieve conges-

tion and the removal of the Lindum and Coopers Plains railway level crossings.

“Regional Queensland shouldn’t be forgotten and we look forward to the delivery of funding to help upgrade key roads like the Bruce, Captain Cook, Flinders and Capricorn highways, along with the Kennedy and Gregory Developmental roads.”

Dr Michael said RACQ would hold the nation’s leaders responsible so the electorate was delivered what it deserved.

“Queensland was a battleground State this election, and transport and infrastructure will be the big winners if what’s been promised is delivered.”

RACQ has urged drivers to be vigilant when they travelled throughout Queensland this winter, as new data revealed the number of crashes which involved wildlife spiked in the cooler months.

Club spokesperson Renee Smith said the insurer received more than 11,000 claims in the past three years due to vehicle collisions with animals.

“Not surprisingly, the largest numbers of claims were for crashes near regional towns including Roma, St George and Chinchilla,” Ms Smith said.

Labor abandons rural and regional Queensland FOR regional and rural Queenslanders, the election results confirmed what we have known for some time.

Labor has abandoned the bush and does not stand for those who live, work and raise a family in areas outside of Brisbane.

The Palaszczuk Labor Government are squarely to blame for Queensland’s election result. Their city-centric agenda of ruling from Brisbane for Brisbane has seen policy after policy hurt rural and regional Queensland.

Whether it be its anti-farmer unfair vegetation management laws or the continued political interference in the approval of the Carmichael Adani mine project, Labor has proven they are antijobs, anti-resources and antiregions.

Compound this with the cuts to regional maternity services, the return to the Bligh-era hospital chaos, high regional unemployment and 5 new taxes since the state election and it is no wonder Queenslanders are angry.

Queenslanders want a government that gives them opportunities to develop and

grow jobs in their towns and communities – not one that plays politics.

When I first became Opposition Leader, I said I would fight to end the city-country divide and an LNP Government I lead would do exactly that.

I am committed to creating opportunities and jobs in our regions and returning the wealth they generate back into these communities.

The LNP will build water infrastructure and dams that create jobs and opportunities.

We will develop our natural mining and agricultural assets through fair and workable laws.

Readers should be aware that if someone is experiencing changes in mood or rapid mood changes, unusual behaviour or they are withdrawing and isolating themselves from others, this may be an early warning sign of poor mental health.

It is shameful that the average life expectancy of people with schizophrenia in Australia right now is just 54 years old. There is so much stigma around mental health.

It does not always take Chemical Insecticide to kill them. This is not just a few Bee Hives this is hundreds

of them. Also what about the Roundup that must get into the honey we eat, I protest in the strongest way possible.

This practice has to stop, it is ridiculous in this day and age that we have to put up with archaic Toxic Chemicals when we all know they are so harmful to everyone.

Roundup is Banned in so many places in our world because it has been proved to cause Cancer but on our beautiful Tablelands we still spray is around like water.

1. Line a tray with baking paper.

2. In a microwavable bowl add 4 Mars bars and the butter and cook on high for 2 minutes, stirring after the first minute until melted.

3. Add the 3 cups of rice bubbles to the Mars Bar mixture and stir through well.

4. Pour the mixture into the slice tin and press down so the mixture expands evenly.

5. In another microwavable bowl add the cooking chocolate and half a teaspoon of coconut oil, microwave on high for 1 min 30 second.

6. Spread chocolate evenly over the top of the slice.

7. Chop one Mars Bar into random sizes and decorate the top of the slice.

8. Refrigerate for 3 hours.

9. Slice and enjoy cold.

THE Great Barrier Reef Masters Games was held in Cairns on the weekend with two Mareeba cricket teams walking away champions after winning the grand finals on Sunday.

Held at the Walker Road sporting precinct in Edmonton, the 'Mareeba Dorys' ladies side won by seven runs to claim victory in their grand final match against Euchua from Victoria.

Meanwhile in the men’s over 35’s it was the 'Malendrinos from Mareeba' team who defeated Mulgrave to secure the finals win.

TWO young Indigenous girls have been selected to represent Australia on the international netball stage in New Zealand.

Rhyanna Yow-Yeh and Shiianne Barlow went to North Palmerston NZ last week in order to compete with the ‘Budgies’ indigenous school girls team.

The girls are currently playing and will finish the competition on May 31 before returning to Atherton.

With Rhyanna having been

previously selected for the international school girls team, she will have a veterans advantage.

“Last year I received a call up from Budgies to represent at the u19s Budgies Indigenous Australia at the Gold Coast,” Rhyanna said.

“This year feels different because I made the first 12 during selections at the January 2019 National Indigenous Schoolgirls Netball Championships in Melbourne.”

This being Shiianne’s first experience at the international level

,she sees this as an opportunity to grow and develop her skills.

“I have been selected in the Budgies netball team but we only played competitions around Australia,” Shiianne said.

“Being an International side the experience will be quite different.

“It’s great to be a part of it as I can learn and develop my skills.”

In preparation for the competition both girls have been doing training internally and externally from netball, including cross-fit and personal trainers. Both girls

stated that this extra assistance has helped them on the court.

“To keep my fitness up I regularly attend HBZ CrossFit in Atherton,” Rhyanna said.

Shiianne credited her fitness to her dad Michael Barlow and Glen Hussy from Motorv8 Industries.

“To keep my endurance and fitness up I did my own fitness at home with the help of my dad and Glen who helped me as a Personal Trainer.”

Both girls regularly play a high level of netball with Shiianne playing in A Grade for the Tablelands and Cairns divisions while Rhyanna has been selected for representative teams for the Far North region this year.

Confidence was a staple for both girls stating that most of the girls in the team have played together previously.

“Most of the girls in our team have played together previously on a number of occasions,” Rhyanna said.

“These events give me the opportunity to showcase the talent and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls from rural and remote communities of Australia.”

Rhyanna also said that she hopes to be seen as a role model for other young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls who want to pursue their dreams and aspirations in netball.

Similar words were spoken by Shiianne saying that she will represent her heritage with honour and pride.

“This will hopefully encourage more indigenous to play and perform well,” Shiianne said.

“And to represent their indigenous heritage while playing sports, it gives them an idea that they can make it.”

Rhyanna and Shiianne look to represent their heritage and culture along with the 11 other players that have travelled to New Zealand.

“It is an honour and a privilege to represent indigenous Australia in netball,” Rhyanna said “I will represent my Abo-

“We need the following meets to be highly successful in order to recover the lost revenue.

“Races are an important part of the social framework of all small communities, with people from all walks of life coming together to celebrate the event.”

The June 1 race day is scheduled to be a five race event race card, with events like the battle for the Bush Crown, fashions on the field and others.

Live music with Kurdaz Band and a fully licenced bar are available to enjoy on the

race day, with gates opening at 11:30am and the first races starting at 1:15pm.

The bar will also be open to patrons at midday.

The fashions seen on race days have been long missed and are expected to be just as good as they were, as ladies and gentlemen dress to impress and will be judged between the second and third races on the day.

Epic win for Roosters

Gladiators fall in tight affair with Brothers

Roosters forward Anthony Curcio is claimed by the Kangaroos defence.

A TRY from captain Jermaine Pedro thirty seconds from fulltime has given the Atherton Roosters a 26-20 win over Kangaroos at Vico Oval on Sunday.

With the score locked at 20 all, an attempted field goal by Kangaroos was charged down by the Roosters and it was Pedro who picked up the loose ball and raced 50 metres to score.

Only two tries were scored in a tight first half and it was Kangaroos leading 6-4 at the break.

Kangaroos started the second session with three quick tries and led 20-4 at the 50th minute. But

to their credit the Roosters kept going and soon had three of their own tries to tie the score up at 20 all with six minutes left to play.

With a winning result still in the balance both sides went up a gear and it was the Roosters who pulled out the better effort to take the points. The first grader’s win capped off a perfect away trip for the Roosters who claimed wins in all four grades played.

A penalty conversion two minutes from fulltime got the Roosters home 18-16 in the under 18 match while the Roosters reserve grade held off a fast

finishing Kangaroos to win 1412. The Roosters won the ladies game 7-0.

The first grade points table lead is now shared by Atherton and Brothers on 10 points followed by Kangaroos 9, Innisfail 8, Yarrabah 8, Ivanhoes 7, Mossman 6, Suburbs 5, Edmonton 4, Mareeba 2, Tully 1.

Dimbulah Barras receive boost

THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade side went down valiantly against one of the top sides in the competition as they lost 28-24 to Cairns Brothers at Stan Williams Park on Sunday.

The Gladiators performance was made all the more impressive considering they had five of their more experienced players unavailable through injury.

The Gladiators foundation for their success for most of the first half was built on the back of their defence, as they held Brothers to just 6 points for the majority of the first stanza.

However their tendency to give up points in bunches cost them as Brothers scored three tries in the final 12 minutes of the half to take a 16-8 lead at the break.

That didn’t deter the men in the green and gold however, as they came out firing in the second half and scored two tries to regain the lead.

Despite trailing at home, Brothers showed why they’re

one of the teams to beat this year as they came home very strong to score two quick tries and kick a penalty goal to put the game out of the Gladiators’ reach.

While the Gladiators would’ve obviously loved to have come away with the win, there were plenty of positives for them to build on moving forward, and their improvement from week to week is becoming apparent.

The performances from Gladiators front-tower Kurt Jackson and lock forward Ben Cocciolone in particular were very impressive.

Jackson bagged a hat trick while Cocciolone got through a mountain of work on both sides of the ball and led admirably as the stand-in captain.

After the game, Mareeba Gladiators coach Terry Aquilina noted that he was pleased with his side’s performance.

The Dimbulah Barras senior team has been struggling for some years now, however captain coach Jimmy Hatchman said the club had a big push this year.

“This is mainly about the community and not just the team,” he said.

“We wanted something that the town could be proud of.
