The time of their lives
HIGH schools across the region celebrated their year 12 formals last week to bid farewell to their schooling life. On an emotional day, hundreds of students shed their school uniforms and dressed to impress at their last school commitment. Mareeba State High School held their formal on Friday evening at the Mareeba International Club. The 2015 formal lived up to expectations, with the students looking their best on the night and spending time with their friends. Greater expense By Justin Fris
THE Tablelands Regional Council formally endorsed the release of their 2014/2015 Annual Report last Thursday morning. Coupled by the release of the recent Mareeba and Cook Shire Council annual reports, all documents have made for interesting reading – especially in terms of expense differentiation. Despite being on lower salaries (as part of being a ‘Category 3’ council), Mareeba Shire councillors spent $23,873.57 less on communication
and travel-based entitlements than their TRC counterparts. TRC councillors are part of a ‘Category 4’ council, which means their salaries are substantially higher. For the purpose of this article, three variables of expenses have been analysed. These include: phone, professional development and miscellaneous expenses. Cook Shire Council and Mareeba Shire Council opted to offer a complete breakdown of expenses, with the TRC offering only a total expense figure.
In terms of comparing mayoral expenses, Cook Shire Council Mayor Peter Scott led the way with $17,739.90 – however $15,869.93 of this amount was spent on personal developmentrelated training. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long’s total expenses reached $14,770.69 – whereas MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore’s expenses only totalled $5,638. Across all three councils (Cook, MSC and TRC), the only two other councillors (excluding mayors) who finished with double digit expenses were Cr’s Geoff Stocker ($13,208.95) and Peter
Hodge ($11,572.51) from the TRC. At the other end of the scale, Cook Shire councillors Russell Bowman ($966.77) and Sue Clark ($477.77) had the lowest total expenses. In terms of phone expenses, Cook Shire councillors only accrued $4,103.27, with MSC councillors reaching $19,043. However these figures effectively have evened out, in terms of differentiation of professional development expenses (Cook Shire - $36,045.15 vs MSC $11,468). CONTINUED PAGE 3

Best served with warmth and care By Justin Fris THE Mareeba RSL has begun facilitating a soup kitchen each Tuesday evening from 6pm at their venue on Byrnes Street. In light of cost of living pressures heightening throughout the region, members of the team were keen to assist other community entities in helping others. The RSL Management team held a series of meetings to determine what they could do in negating such a major issue. The timeslot of 6pm on a Tuesday was selected in order to avoid clashes with other community organisations – as the purpose of the soup kitchen is for a series of organisations and individuals to work together. People can come along
and not only enjoy a heartfilled meal of soup, but also other filling items. All the food provided is the same as that served at the RSL, so quality is assured. Various welfare personnel (for example counsellors and chaplains) will also be in attendance each week, freely mingling with those in attendance and providing advice for those who need someone to talk to. Privacy is of the upmost importance for all involved with the program, with the back gates of the RSL open from 6pm, so individuals don’t need to directly walk through the RSL area. If you, or someone you know of, has fallen on hard times, please seek assistance. Locally, Lifeline Australia (Mareeba, 4092 7421) is one of many organisations that can provide support.

BOOK lovers in the leafy community of Kuranda were on hand to see the new Kuranda Library and Service Centre opened last Saturday morning. Several Mareeba Shire councillors were in attendance for the ceremony, along with the Member for Barron River, Craig Crawford. This project was made a reality through the work of several people, who have truly turned the facility into a distinguished community precinct. MSC Deputy Mayor Jenny Jensen – a fierce advocate for the project – was reflective on how much had been achieved. “This is a very momentous day,” she said. “It’s been a very long journey to this point, but it’s the beginning of a whole new life for the Kuranda community precinct. “This is a space for the community. Much-needed space, which we can truly call a community space,” she said. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore showed his appreciation for the many hard-working volunteers and was optimistic about the precinct’s longevity. “The results are outstanding. Kuranda is an important part of our shire and council has put $1.5 million into acquiring and getting the precinct to this stage,” Mayor Gilmore said. “Council would like to thank the committee members, both current and past members, whose hard work and efforts helped us to get to where we are today. Thanks also to John Baskerville, the current chair, for his leadership and input into this important project.”

Stark gap in expenses across annual reports “Following on de-amalgamation from the Mareeba Shire in 2014, we have focussed on reviewing and reducing costs – with already $4.5 million already cut from our ongoing operational costs through numerous initiatives. “This council has had to make some very tough decisions to remain viable and we are now a more streamlined and efficient organisation; providing essential services to our communities.” Mayor Lee Long added: “Ensuring that our region can support growth without our environmental, economic and social values, whilst still meeting our financial challenges – will be an ongoing challenge.” In his MSC report, Mayor Tom Gilmore said that considerable effort had been put in to ensure that the needs of the community had been met since de-amalgamation. “This first budget has been our guide in designing our organisation to be of suitable size and competency to match the expectation and capacity to pay of our community,” he said.
FROM PAGE 1 THERE were also stark differences in regard to administrative action complaints. The TRC had 37 presented and resolved during 2014/2015, compared with 90 in 2013/2014 and 106 in 2012/2013. The MSC only saw 19 complaints lodged during 2014/2015, with nine of these resolved. Cook Shire Council had 18, with 15 of these resolved. All three mayors had a unique perspective of the 2014/2015 year, although some similarities were evident across the board. In her Annual Report message, Mayor Lee Long said the TRC was committed to curbing spending and sustaining regional growth. “Significant change for the Tablelands Regional Council seems never ending,” she said. “There has been turmoil for our organisation, ratepayers and the community since the amalgamation of the four Shires in 2008.
“As part of that process we have reviewed the structure of the organisation, our service delivery model and the number of staff required to satisfy the demands of the community. We believe that we have achieved that balance.” Mayor Gilmore added: “Your council has its eyes firmly fixed on the future of this shire. We understand the need to strengthen and broaden our infrastructure base and to wherever possible, play our role in expanding the economic base of our community.” Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott spoke of a ‘challenging year’ - highlighting restructure as one of the major elements of this period of local government. “The new, leaner, structure is a better value model to ratepayers and those staff that did leave did so (either) voluntarily or to (eventual) new employment.” All of this information and more will be taken into account by ratepayers across all three councils in the lead up to March 19 local government elections.

As the festive season draws closer, many residents may not know of the battle facing several parts of the western area of the Mareeba Shire - areas that have recently been declared drought affected. “Following discussions with the state government, Council has been invited to submit a grant application for funding under the ‘Community Drought Support Package Program’,” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “Council will hopefully be able to obtain funds to provide relief to those doing it tough in drought-affected areas.
LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE TO GO?
“The exact details of how much we will get and how it is to be used are yet to be determined. While we know it won’t be a large amount, we will work directly with the community involved to see how they believe it can be best used.” He added: “As a council, we are well aware of the struggles this community is facing and will do what we can to support them. “The people in this area are really doing it tough, and our thoughts and prayers go out to them,” Mayor Gilmore said.

Casting vote causes conflict By Justin Fris THE use of the casting vote during Tablelands Regional Council meetings again raised the ire of certain councillors last Thursday morning. Under recent amendments to the TRC’s ‘Standing Orders’, urgent items on notice
are required to gain permission from council by way of vote, before they can be raised for discussion. If the issue is raised prior to a meeting and deemed ‘non-urgent’, councillors are required to lodge their motion with TRC CEO Ian Church 10 or more days out from the
Last Thursday morning’s meeting saw the first use of Mayor Lee Long’s casting vote under the amended ‘Standing Orders’ – with Cr Linwood’s motion losing 4-3 on grounds for discussion permission. The issue regarded Cr Marjorie Pagani – who was requesting to participate in all remaining TRC meetings via teleconference. Cr Pagani has been required to submit a medical certificate for each meeting attended via teleconference. The motion up for discussion would have meant a further amendment to the ‘Standing Orders’ and that Cr Pagani would be able to participate via teleconference without a medical certificate. Cr Peter Hodge believed making such an amendment to the standing orders wasn’t suitable in the current forum. “It needs to be workshopped properly because it actually goes against the ‘Standing Orders’,” he said. Mayor Lee Long and Cr Geoff Stocker agreed.

Share your story and help fight postnatal depression By Justin Fris RANGEVIEW resident Jessica Morris is encouraging women who are battling postnatal depression (PND) to seek support and talk about their issues. After experiencing PND following the birth of her second child, Mrs Morris became one of many involved in support networks committed to helping others through their battles – by talking and setting goals. Last week, Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia (PANDA) held their ‘Awareness Week’, which ties in with Mrs Morris’s passion for assisting others. Unless you have ever experienced anxiety or depression in your lifetime, you simply have no inkling about what it feels like. You can’t comprehend the seemingly irrational fear of leaving your bed. The desire to run away from social environments. Experiencing physical symptoms which have amassed from your struggles. Stereotypically, the birth of a child is perceived as a joyous occasion. But behind all the well‑wishers, sometimes a seemingly ‘perfect’ life can be anything but. “I suffered postnatal depression and anxiety after my second son was born,” Mrs Morris said.
“The main purpose of wanting to get the awareness out there is to help people know that they are not by themselves – and that it is ok to ask for help. “Over the last year or so, I’ve been speaking at conferences to bring out that awareness by sharing my story. “This is so other women and men who have battled postnatal depression can relate and have an opportunity to understand that they are not alone.” PANDA CEO Terri Smith said it was important for those impacted to seek professional support, as early invention is vital on the road to recovery. “We’re finding that anxiety is now just as common as depression; and many parents experience both anxiety and depression at the same time, so it needs to be front of mind as a health concern during pregnancy and after birth,” she said. “We know that early intervention promotes a more beneficial outcome, so it’s a really important message to seek help as soon as you have any concerns.” If you, or someone you know of is currently battling post-natal depression or anxiety, several support options are available. One of these is the PANDA helpline on 1300 726 306. Please seek help if you need it.

Men, it’s time to shape up for summer. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift has five tips to strengthen men’s health and wellbeing.
Manpower: Five healthy game changers for men!
This week marked International Men’s Day (November 19) – a day to celebrate the lives of more than 11 million Aussie men and shine the spotlight on their health. While blokes fare well on many economic indicators, when it comes to health they often face poorer outcomes than women, in areas like lower life expectancy, higher levels of avoidable mortality, and higher mortality from almost all common causes of death including cancer. Here are five easy strategies to assist with health, happiness and a long life. One, get checked. In Queensland, more than 14,500 men will be diagnosed with cancer this year - around 4100 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, 2000 with melanoma and about 1700 with bowel cancer. The good news is, most cancers, if detected early, can be effectively treated. Become familiar with your body and get to know what feels ‘normal’ so you don’t miss any changes. Look for things like lumps, sores or ulcers that don’t heal, unusual changes in your testicles, unexplained weight loss, moles that change shape, size or colour, blood in bowel motion, persistent changes in toilet habits or urinary problems or changes. These symptoms are often related to more common health problems, but if you notice any unusual changes, visit your doctor. Two, refocus. To get yourself in the best frame of mind, set defined goals. It’s important to have a clear focus of where you’re headed and formulate the steps you’re going to take to get there. Research shows that putting steps into place to achieve your overall goal provides real motivation and a greater commitment. Whether you start by setting new career goals, personal or fitness goals, either big or small, it’s important to put some direction in place. Three, warm up, work out, and eat well. Pumping
iron at the gym won’t improve your overall health unless you balance your fitness routine with good nutrition. And did you know warming up is just as important for the muscles as working out? Research shows those who do a ‘dynamic warm up’, muscle-warming routine that includes moves like walking lunges and high skips have better performance, strength and less injury. Once you’ve got your warm up sorted, make sure you balance both resistance and cardiovascular training. Like all things in life, balance is key. Even just 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every day will deliver noticeable health benefits. Four, clean up your skin care regimen. Skin care products aren’t just for women. Your skin is your largest organ, so it’s important to take good care of it. Cleanse and moisturise. It’s that simple. Finding a good cleanser will help remove dead skin cells and give you a fresh look. After cleansing, it’s important to replenish your skin with a moisturiser. If you have normal skin, go for an oil-based moisturiser. If you have oily skin, try a water-based product. Complement your new routine by drinking eight glasses of water a day and staying hydrated. Five, speak out. C’mon men, don’t get all shy on us here. It’s important to make a habit of sharing your feelings with those around you. Whether you’ve been through change recently, or are currently experiencing a difficult situation, it’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed. And it’s ok to ask for help or emotional support. Don’t battle life’s challenges on your own – reach out to someone you trust and you’re likely to cope better and adjust more quickly. This week, make a bro-date with a friend or close family member and have a meaningful chat. Implement these five tips today to become the best version of yourself you can be – man power! For more information visit: relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

Funding boom for schools
By Justin Fris
SCHOOLS across the Far North are set to reap massive benefits, after Palaszczuk Government treasurer Curtis Pitt announced last Friday that $12.84 million would be provided to improve school facilities in the region. Two of the biggest Tablelands winners from the announcement were Atherton State High School and Mareeba State High School, who will each receive around $1.5 million. Other amounts provided for Cook electorate schools included: Biboohra State School ($10,872), Chillagoe State School ($11,626), Cooktown State School ($54,590), Mareeba State School ($82,186), Mossman State High School ($79,570) and Mt Molloy State School ($9,750). Recipients in the Dalrymple electorate included: Atherton State School ($137,062), Dimbulah State School ($26,744), Irvinebank State School ($9,750), Malanda State High School ($277,920), Millaa Millaa
State School ($11,646), Mt Garnet State School ($14,812), Mutchilba State School ($9,376), Tolga State School ($32,992) and Walkamin State School ($9,376). Mr Pitt said the funding would provide a tremendous benefit for the region – especially in terms of facility maintenance. “This is part of an additional $300 million investment over and above the existing school maintenance budget over the next three years,” he said. “The former LNP Government promised to fix the issue of maintenance in Queensland schools; but, in reality, they left $260 million in outstanding maintenance with no long term strategy to solve the problem. “The Palaszczuk Government is 100 per cent committed to Queensland’s state schools and while we know there’s no quick fix, we also know that this work is absolutely essential after years of inaction.” MSHS Principal Scott Whybird said he was delighted with the news and said it would be greatly appreciated by the MSHS schooling community.
Mayor absent during Linwood presentation By Justin Fris
TABLELANDS Regional councillor Shaaron Linwood was formally recognised for 15 years of service to local government during last Thursday’s council meeting. All were present for the recognition except TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long, who left the room during the presentation. Mayor Lee Long’s duties during this time were carried out by TRC Deputy Mayor, Geoff Stocker. It is unclear as to why Mayor Lee Long left the room during this agenda item (12), as she resumed her duties from item 14 onwards. Councillor Rod Marti warmly praised the efforts of Cr Linwood, who has served on a multitude of community committees and councils. “I’d really like to acknowledge the effort and attitude of Cr Linwood,” he said. “Who everyone in this room - staff, members of the media and the public – would know what an outstanding councillor Cr Linwood is. “She is really loved by her community and is a real worker. If anyone is thinking of running for council at the next election, they should use the blueprint which Cr Linwood has established over 15 years. This is a first class model.” Cr Marjorie Pagani said: “I’ve had the absolute privilege and pleasure of working with Cr Linwood over the past four years. “I’ve never seen such a hardworking politician in the broader sense. She steps in and steps up. At times, I’ve been overwhelmed and ill; and unable to attend a meeting –
on every occasion I’ve ever asked, Cr Linwood has always stepped in and helped. “I’m absolutely privileged to have work with her as a councillor and pleased to call her a friend. One thing I would like to express here now however, is my absolute disappointment in the Mayor walking out on this contribution.” Cr Stocker promptly asked Cr Pagani to retract her final remark – however upon being questioned by Cr Pagani on the situation, he fell silent and proceeded with the presentation. Cr Peter Hodge also praised Cr Linwood for her service, despite the pair not always seeing eye to eye on certain issues. “She works very, very hard,” he said. “Yes, Cr Linwood and I haven’t always seen eye to eye and we’ve had our differences – but that’s just part of local government. She always sticks up for her communities and I wish her very well.” Mayor Lee Long was contacted for comment after the meeting, in order for documentation of accuracy and fairness. She was invited to comment on why she left the room; and offered a chance to congratulate Cr Linwood. In a written statement to The Express, she said: “Our ‘Standing Orders’ 4.20.1 state: “After a meeting of Council has been formally constituted and the business commenced, a councillor shall not enter or leave from such meeting without first notifying the chair. “Councillors are not required to give a reason for leaving; and are not asked if they wish to go to the rest room, make a phone call or for any

other reason. However, it is noted in the minutes. “During our last Ordinary Meeting, I had a matter to attend to and advised our minute taker and Cr Stocker - who continued to chair the meeting until I returned shortly afterwards. “Cr Linwood was recognised for her fifteen years of service to Local Government during the meeting (former Herberton Shire Council and more recently TRC) and LGAQ also recognises councillors who serve 15 years or more in local government. “I have been on council with Cr Linwood only during this term of TRC; and I wish her well in her retirement.” Cr Linwood swiftly said: “The Mayor can try to paint it differently, but everyone who was there saw it for what it was.”

mareeba Shire councillor Jenny Jensen has recently announced she will not seek reelection at the local government elections in March next year. Jenny was elected in 2008 and 2012 as a divisional councillor to represent the people of Kuranda (with the Tablelands Regional Council) and in 2013, to the new Mareeba Shire Council. As Deputy-Mayor, Cr Jensen took on a major role working tirelessly with her fellow councillors in securing the future of the Mareeba Shire. “After a lot of consideration, I have decided that it is time to step down and pursue other interests in community work,” she said. A resident of Kuranda, Jenny has been tireless in her quest to represent local communities to ensure equity and good governance in council decision-making. Indeed, she has a reputation on the MSC council for asking the questions that need to be asked; and fronting the difficult issues. “The past eight years have been full of many challenges but it has also been a great opportunity to be part of working to make our local communities better,” she said.

As a councillor, Jenny has driven a number of community projects across the shire, and has also spearheaded a number of significant infrastructure improvements in the Kuranda district - such as the development of the ‘Kuranda Community Precinct’. She says that her number one priority has always been to assist individual residents with the issues they raise with her. “I was pretty green when I started on Council, but I have learnt a lot during my time and worked alongside some great councillors and very dedicated council staff,” she said. Jenny credits the current MSC council as a very effective one, due to the way councillors have worked so well together to build the new MSC; as well as the leadership of the Mayor Tom Gilmore and CEO, Peter Franks.

Timely boost for Kennedy electorate councils By Justin Fris
FAR Northern councils across the Kennedy electorate have received a timely financial boost from the Turnbull Government. Queensland Liberal senator Ian Macdonald announced the funding details of the Financial Assistant Grants program last Thursday, which will see Kennedy electorate councils receive $44,476,146 in allocated funds. Locally, Mareeba Shire Council received $3,320,718, Tablelands Regional Council $2,765,418 and Etheridge Shire $2,377,453. Senator Macdonald said: “At a time when all levels of government are working together to actively pursue opportunities to maximise the vast economic potential that exists in Northern Australia, these grants are an invaluable source of funding for local councils,” Senator Macdonald said. “This money can be spent according to local priorities, which not only includes vital infrastructure, but also helps support local businesses and creates jobs in these

communities.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said that federal program funding was an annual occurrence – with the eventual amount determined with several variables taken into account. “The process of determining the funding each council receives is very complex,” he said. “It’s based on a number of variables relating to relative disadvantage. “It is then split into two components – a ‘General Purpose’ grant and a ‘Roads’ grant – which is based on the length of roads within the Shire.” Mayor Gilmore added: “The Financial Assistance Grants funding is a major factor of our overall budget. Without it, we would really struggle, as ratepayers can certainly not afford to pay any more rates.” Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter remains critical of the Turnbull Government, who has capped the funding rate in recent years. “The hypocrisy involved where in the one budget they stopped the indexation and now they want credit for giving this money back to the Councils - the same money they’d taken away,” he said.

The point of impact – Students begin their stampede following the ringing of the school bell.
Ringing endorsement for 2015 MSHS seniors
MAREEBA State High School’s ‘Class of 2015’ officially finished their secondary schooling last Friday afternoon. In line with other schools across the state, the final day of secondary schooling is emotive; and one of transition, with last Friday no different. Prior to the moments before the infamous ‘ringing of the bell’ for the last time in their lives, the student cohort formed a tight knit huddle in full view of admiring students, teachers and parents. With an abundance of enthusiasm, they began to chant the names of many within the group – admiring their personal qualities. After 12 years of experiences and lessons that will last a lifetime, the atmosphere reached fever pitch when the famous school bell was rung by the ‘Class of 2015’
for the final time; and MSHS Principal Scott Whybird buoyantly declared: ‘Class dismissed’! Once uttered, a mighty stampede ensued, with students cheering loudly as they left the school gates for the final time. In a truly unique finale, local police and fire fighters participated in a final ‘drive by’ for the students. Led by police escort, the students tooted their car horns heartily and waved as their cars were doused by a hose from a nearby fire engine. School officials and fire fighters joked later that some students were driving deliberately slower, in a bid double the experience as a car wash. For the students, it was an end of an era. In coming days, they will have various celebrations to commemorate their success – however the new challenges of tertiary study and full-time employment also beckon on the horizon.

Community CELEBRATIONS The local community has been showing how much they value the Mareeba Animal Refuge in recent weeks. Since the launch of ‘$50,000 in 50 days – save the animals of the Mareeba Refuge’ campaign just over $37,000 has been raised in under 40 days – nearly $1000 per day. The generosity of the local community has been outstanding with donations coming from businesses, community organisations, schools and individuals.
Beth Hatchman of Creative Photographic Memories in Mareeba donated $1,000 to the Mareeba Animal Refuge last Tuesday. The money was raised from the ‘White Elephant Stall’ held at the local business with goods donated by the public, plus Mickey and Minnie photos held on the day, as well as proceeds from T-Shirt sales at Creative Photographic Memories.
The Mareeba Lioness Club donated $1,500 to Jennifer Walsh of the Mareeba Animal Refuge on Friday, November 20.

PHONE: 4092 4198 RACQ Community and Education Manager David Contarini said a ‘Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland’ (CARRS-Q) study of RACQ’s powerful Docudrama program for senior students highlighted the importance of giving teens skills to speak up for themselves. ON THE ATHERTON TABLELANDS “What we know, is young adults who are given practical tools they can use in real-life scenarios will be subsequently empowered to speak up in a potentially dangerous situation,” Mr Contarini said.
“For example, diversionary tactics which can be as simple as suggesting a fast food stop when travelling in a vehicle where they’ve begun to feel unsafe, are an easy way for a teen to remove themselves from the environment. “Our education program is dedicated to making Queensland high school students aware of the consequences their actions could have, and about making the smart choice in any situation they might face. “With end of year celebrations and Schoolies just around the corner we’re asking parents to make sure they’ve spoken with their kids about a strategy for getting home safely.” Mr Contarini said having a ‘no-questions-asked’ phone call option to ring Mum or Dad at any time, day or night without question was a back-up RACQ encouraged. “We know that any parent would rather take a phone call in the middle of the night than receive a knock on the door from emergency services,” he said. The free RACQ Docudrama program, funded by the Queensland Government through the Department of Transport and Main Roads, is delivered to more than 50 schools across Queensland each year.

Tyrepower Mareeba wins state awards Tyrepower Mareeba was again in the limelight at the annual presentation of the Queensland ‘Tyrepower Awards’, held at Ridges Southbank, in Brisbane on November 7. John and Adriana Raso (pictured above) were awarded ‘Best Presentation’ for the North Queensland region; and were also named the overall winner for ‘best presentation’ in Queensland.
MAREEBA The State’s peak motoring body has expressed its frustration at on-going arrogance behind the wheel, as data revealed Queensland’s worst regions for mobile phone offences. The Gold Coast region topped the list for most people caught using their phone while driving, with more than 2400 motorists nabbed in the first half of this year, according to Queensland Police figures. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said distracted driving was becoming the fastest growing problem on Queensland roads. “Whether you’re texting, talking on the phone or checking social media while driving - it means you’re not paying attention on the road,” Ms Ritchie said. “Distraction is included as one of
the ‘Fatal Five’, which means it’s one of the major causes of crashes on our roads.” Ms Ritchie said there was no safe time to use your phone when behind the wheel. “You see it almost every time you drive, someone staring down at their laps thinking that no one will notice them on their phone,” she said. “Most people recognise the dangers of other drivers on their phone, but too often they think the rule doesn’t apply to them. “Already Queensland’s road toll is on track to be worse than 2014, currently sitting at 201 lives lost. That’s 13 more than the same time last year. “It’s about time we woke up to ourselves and realised the safest place for your mobile phone out of reach.”

The LAND Steers again nudge 300c/kg in Mareeba THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 756 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday, November 17, which was up 136 from the previous sale. Prices again continued in good form, which no doubt pleased graziers. Although no outright records fell, progress continued across most types. Midweight and heavier type steers were in solid supply, and gained substantially more this week. A line of 25 C4 scores realised to a top of 298.2c/kg, which tied last week’s record price. Along with this, 16 C5 scores made 294.2c/kg ($1,703.69).
Heavier cows steadied, with 2 C4 scores reaching 270.2 c/kg ($1,438.82). Midweight heifer types sold well, with 1 C4 score realising 274.2c/kg. Lighter bulls gained some prominence and sold to a top of 232.2c/kg. Midweight types shed significantly however, with 1 C3 score realising 234.2c/kg ($749.44). If you would like to nominate your cattle for any upcoming sale, please contact your local agent or the Mareeba Saleyards on 0457 489 185. Sales commence at 9am on Tuesday, with nominated cattle required by 7pm each Monday night (prior to the sale).
Farm gate would be impacted by GST increase on fresh food FEDERAL Labor candidate for Kennedy Norm Jacobson is concerned that the grazier farm gate will be one of the hardest hit, if potential changes to the GST (goods and services) tax are increased from 10 to 15 per cent. This would also potentially also see an inclusion of the GST on fresh food items – which would directly impact those on
the land. Mr Jacobson said: “It’s the lead-up to Christmas; and if Mr Turnbull wants to increase the GST, if Mr Morrison wants to leave this bad idea on the table, they should tell Australians sooner rather than later. “Otherwise the only turkey on the table this Christmas will be this bad tax.”

Andrew’s biosecurity initiatives were featured in a video presented at the Australian banana industry’s TR4 field day. Andrew has installed a converted shipping container and foot washes at his farm gate, so workers can wash and store separate sets of footwear to wear to-and-from work and on the farm.
Panama TR4 Field Day held OVER 150 people took part in a designated Panama Tropical Race 4 Field Day recently in Wangan, which was deemed a success by organisers and attendees alike. The purpose of the event was all about networking, receiving updates and hearing from fellow producers who had increased biosecurity-based practices on their properties. Along with presentations from graziers across FNQ, Biosecurity Qld were on hand to address any pressing issues or questions. Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) Chairman Doug Phillips praised those who attended, saying that the level of interaction and participation in all components was excellent. “The field day has been a great opportunity for growers to talk with each other about what they are doing on the farms to minimise the risk of TR4 spreading,” he said. “It was fantastic to see the high level of participation from growers and others in our industry who attended
from across our major North Queensland banana production regions in and around Tully, Innisfail, the Tablelands and Lakelands.” He added: “Some of the solutions that individual growers have found to biosecurity issues are absolutely brilliant,” he said. “The field day was also an excellent opportunity to hear about the research and development work that is helping us to find ways to control TR4. “In the early days there were lots of questions and the questions were coming in faster than we could generate answers. At the field day we heard about some the answers that being generated.” Biosecurity Qld TR4 response program leader Rebecca Sapurro said the experience was extremely beneficial for growers. “I’d like to thank everyone who’s let us on (to their farms),” Ms Sapuppo said. “It’s an absolute testament to industry that you have all got behind the process.”

The LAND KAP continues fight for canegrowers this issue - we are about standing-up for Queensland's 4,000 cane farmers as well as their families and employees.” Mr Gordon said: “This bill reflects a necessity in an industry that has built Queensland, and that is a real choice for canegrowers in marketing of sugar and greater transparency in pricing. I see this as common sense. “I agree with Queensland Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne’s passion expressed recently, that there has to be greater investment, and greater marketing opportunity, which is exactly why I support Mr Knuth’s bill. Despite the nature of the current political spectrum in regional Qld, Mr Knuth said he greatly appreciated Mr Gordon’s support on the bill. "We commend the Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, for standing up with us for cane growers in his electorate and right across Queensland,” he said.

Couple wins night away thanks to TGT A lucky couple from ‘Old Maitland Station’ have won a weekend away at The Reef Casino, Cairns, thanks to Mars Pet Care and TGT and Mars Pet Care recently ran a six-week long competition in all four of their sites promoting the Mars brands; such as Chum, Pedigree, Advance and Whiskas, to name a few. By purchasing any two of the mentioned brands, customers were eligible to enter the competition in all TGT sites.
Vic and Mary Inveradi from Old Maitland Station, two hours north of Mareeba, were the lucky winners. Scott Green, Manager of TGT Rural, drew Mary’s name out last Saturday and couldn’t wait to inform her of the good news. Vic and Mary have never been to the Reef Casino, nor spent more than two nights away from their farm and animals. Although very grateful, Mary’s main concern was who was going to look after the animals for two nights whilst they were away.
KP MANGO
It’s on !
MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth will continue to back the support of local canegrowers, as they bid for a better deal in marketing their sugar. The Katter’s Australia Party – which recently released a private members bill in parliament on the issue – are working collaboratively with Tableland Canegrowers and the Independent Member for Cook, Billy Gordon. "The KAP Sugar Industry (Real Choice in Marketing) Amendment Bill 2015' importantly gives growers a real choice in the marketing entity for raw export sugar - in which they retain a legitimate economic interest,” Mr Knuth said. "The bill also provides access to arbitration to ensure quick, fair and final resolution of commercial disputes in negotiating cane supply agreements.” Mr Knuth added: “"We will not be distracted by pathetic politicking on

Panetta returns after World Cup adventure The Australian flag was on full display across the streets of Chile.
The Panetta family joined the Australian contingent in the stands.
Nicholas with his parents Maria and Tony. By Justin Fris
LOCAL football talent Nicholas Panetta has returned to Australia after a memorable U/17 World Cup campaign in Chile. For the plucky striker, it was the tournament that delivered on both a team and individual level. On a team level, the Joeys (Australia) managed to qualify for the second phase of the tournament, in one of the toughest World Cup groups ever drawn across all competitions. Tony Vidmar’s men managed to defeat Argentina 2-1 in their final group match - with their additional 0-0 draw with Mexico enough to see
them go through. Unfortunately, dreams of advancing further were torched by a rampaging Nigeria, who thrashed the Joeys 6-0. The Super Eagles would go on to hoist the trophy, after defeating Mali 2-0 in the final. But for Nicholas, it was a fantastic experience to represent his country – especially with his proud parents Tony and Maria in the grandstands. “After living away from Mareeba for almost three years, it was an incredible feeling knowing that my parents were taking time off work to make the long journey over to Chile,” Nicholas said.
“Putting on the green and gold, I couldn't stop thinking how proud I was making them and scoring two goals was the icing on the cake. “I’d like to thank them for all of their support - as well as Mareeba and the rest of Australia.” Panetta’s father Tony said that he always believed in his son’s ability; and that it was a thrill to see him play live for the first time in 12 months. “I believed in his abilities from when he was a little kid; it was Nicko that had to start believing in himself and once he did, everything would fall into place,” he said. “We (Maria and I) hadn’t seen Nicko play live for about 12 months, but had been told by other
parents that he was on fire before his injuries. “When I saw him against Argentina, I was so happy - you could not wipe the smile off my face for days; he came up against some of the best players in the world and not only matched them, but made some of them look average. I just imagined if he was fully fit what could have he done.” Tony added: “I must thank the Mareeba people for all the support that was given to Nicholas, It’s something that he will never forget.” Nicholas will be visiting the Mareeba United Soccer Club on Sunday, December 20, where he will catch up with all members of the Mareeba community who’ve followed his progress.
Mission Beach forfeit hands victory to Mareeba AFTER having Mission Beach on the ropes at the midway point of their two-day fixture at Kerribee Park, an anti-climax followed for the Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club. The visitors notified Bandits club officials prior to last Sunday that they would be forfeit the remainder of the match. Mareeba began their innings strongly on Day 1 (November 15), and were 1/73 after 15 overs. Robert Taylor (pictured) smashed a handy 85 and had many teammates also join in. With the threat of storms and heavy rain in the distance, the speed and nature of the home side’s innings escalated. Declaring at 9/224 off 47.1 overs, the locals appeared confident of defending the total and making a real game out of it. Youngsters Lachlan Ford and Andrew Lamborn ripped through the Mission Beach top order, leaving the visitors on 4/23 (off 10 overs) at the close of play. Although the Bandits players will be disappointed that they were unable to complete the job, they should still go into this Sunday’s two day fixture against Innisfail (Kerribee Park, 1pm) with momentum.

Mareeba Gladiators endorse 2016 committee at AGM
MAREEBA’s motor sport elite grabbed a classy quinella over November 14 and 15, ahead of an important challenge in Phillip Island, Victoria last weekend. Callan Sayers and Mitchell Naylor were scintillating during the Qld Ralleycross sprint event, which was held at Brisbane’s Lakeside International Raceway. On a slippery surface, Sayers was able to topple Irishman Michael Coyne, a former European rallycross champion. It served as perfect preparation for the
pair, who got to rub shoulders with V8 supercar royalty the following weekend. “The track was really slippery and every lap was different due to the mud that was being dragged onto the tarmac sections by all the cars,” he said. “I just focused on my driving style to adapt to the changing conditions. “The competition was tough and I focused on getting the most out of the car on the evolving track.” Sayers added that he had spent considerable time on his simulator, revising ahead of his race at Phillip Island.
