Young ladies shine at Debutante ball SPARKLING smiles and delightful dresses flooded Mareeba International Club last Saturday when 21 young ladies came together for St Thomas’s Debutante Ball . An annual tradition of Mareeba, the Ball formally introduces young women into society with a night of glitz and glamour alongside their partners. The highlight of the Ball came when the young couples showed off their dancing skills which they had perfected over the last 12 weeks. Proud parents also attended the night, keen the mark the occasion with several memorable photos as their children enter adulthood. Preparations for next year’s event will start in January when the Ball committee meets with parents to put the call out for interested Year 11 and 12 students from Mareeba. PHOTO: Blake Images

Our hospital, our future Community rallies to protect services at Mareeba Hospital By Michael Serenc MAREEBA’S community is prepared to fight for the future of the town’s hospital after about 800 people attended a public meeting last Tuesday night. Politicians, community leaders and local residents spoke passionately at the meeting at Maree-
ba International Club, which was organised by a group of residents concerned about the hospital’s future. But amid all the bluster and emotionallycharged statements, Mareeba mum Sonia Chapman summed up the meeting’s purpose perfectly by highlighting the plight of her son Liam. “Everyone here tonight is being very political
and I want to bring it back to a face. Why is your child more important than mine?,” she asked the crowd. “Liam has a genetic condition that has required me to have him at the hospital hundreds of times in his five years of life in the middle of the night. “To take it to the political levels, here’s a face. This little man needs that hospital as do many
other children.” The community concern comes as Mareeba Hospital is set to lose its Council of Australian Governments (COAG) 19(2) funding exemption in October, along with $2.1 million that goes with it.

MAREEBA locals wanting to express themselves a little better are being urged to get along to a public speaking event this Saturday. Mareeba Toastmasters are running a “Poetry and Interpretative Reading Day” at Centenary Park’s Mareeba Markets, inviting people along to read a poem, story or rhyme in their own unique way. Toastmasters spokeswoman and Mareeba Shire councillor Lenore Wyatt said the event was aimed at building people’s confidence in public speaking. “It’s just about promoting what we do at Toastmasters as well as giving people the opportunity to get up on the soapbox,” she said. “Someone could get up and read a nursery rhyme differently, for example.” Mother’s Day-related poems are also encouraged. The most popular speech on the day will be awarded a Peo-
ple’s Choice Award worth $50. Participants are allowed to speak on any topic except politics, must refrain from swearing and keep their speech to a maximum of seven minutes. The event will be held between 8:30am and 10:30am at Centenary Park with interested participants required to make a gold coin donation. Mareeba Toastmasters regularly meets at Mareeba Leagues Club at 7pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from February to November. “It breaks down barriers when it comes to talking in front of people and helps to increase your vocabulary as well,” Cr Wyatt said. “It’s a very welcoming environment with all different people from all different walks of life.” For more information, contact Lenore Wyatt on 0447 757 336.
Going hairless for a good cause A BUNCH of bald heads and a pair of freshly waxed legs have helped raise more than $1600 for charity at Mareeba State High School last Wednesday. Several staff and students braved a shave or coloured their hair to raise money for the Indie Rose Foundation, Tablelands Men’s Shed Mareeba and the Tracey Eaton Foundation. But Year 12 student Damien Brcko was the unlucky winner of a painful leg wax after raising the most money by students in a fundraiser auction to do the deed – much to the delight of his peers. Student council vice-president Lachlan Ford said he was always impressed by the outpouring of support from the school community whenever a fundraiser was held. “It definitely gets everyone up and going with a bit of school
pride and the school community really gets behind it,” he said. “It’s a great atmosphere, especially when the heads start getting shaved…You care about your looks but you care more about trying to do something and change something in the community. “Losing your hair for a couple of weeks is well worth it.” Lachlan said students fondly remembered their former teacher Mrs Eaton, who sadly passed away from breast cancer in September last year. The work done by Men’s Shed in improving mental health also resonates with the school after the passing of popular Mareeba doctor Mark Bestmann last February. “Mrs Eaton was a big influence on us and Mark Bestmann was a big influence on the community, so they’re all very worthy causes,” Lachlan said.
Mareeba State High Year 12 student Damien Brcko feels the pain as he gets his legs waxed for charity at last week’s school fundraiser.

Locals stand up for town’s hospital
FAIR GO: Kennedy MP Bob Katter, Liam Chapman, 5, Ross Cardillo and Cook MP Billy Gordon at last Tuesday’s night’s public meeting about Mareeba Hospital.
From Page 1 The funding relates to Section 19(2) of the Health Insurance Act 1973, which provides an exemption for certain hospitals to claim against the Medicare Benefits Schedule for non-admitted, non-referred professional services provided in emergency departments, such as outpatient (GP) services. But Mareeba, which has had that exemption since about 2006, is now no longer eligible because of the increase in its population. The Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) is currently working with local GPs to establish a new outpatient services model once the funding expires. “We are sending a message. This turnout is not going to go unnoticed by the hospital administration, the government and government authorities,” concerned residents group spokesman Ross Cardillo told the crowd. “Mareeba already has a doctor shortage. If we’re not able to see a doctor at Mareeba Hospital as an outpatient, this will place more pressure on doctors in private practice and again, there’s no bulk-billing in Mareeba. “Healthcare will become unaffordable for many, resulting in more expensive long-term health costs to our community.” Figures from a Mareeba Shire Council-commissioned report into “Regional Health and Hospital Trends in Tropical North Queensland” showed that Mareeba Hospital averaged about
30,000 emergency department presentations a year compared to about 18,000 presentations a year in Atherton. However, Atherton will soon welcome an upgrade to its emergency department and build new operating theatres which will enable it to offer a series of “Level 4” hospital services. Mr Cardillo claimed that the number of beds at the hospital had been reduced from 90 to 36 in the last 10 years. But Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) CEO Clare Douglas strongly denied this, saying all available records showed Mareeba had always been a 53-bed hospital. “We do not have any data to suggest Mareeba had more beds than this figure and are unsure where the 90 bed figure has come from,” she said. “Bed numbers have not been reduced at Mareeba Hospital.” Ms Douglas said the hospital was staffed to service 36 beds but could go up to 53 beds when required. Official CHHHS figures of Mareeba Hospital’s occupancy rates between January 2016 and April this year show the highest average bed occupancy never went above 35.88 beds, or 69 per cent of total available occupancy. Mr Cardillo further claimed that the hospital’s sterilisation unit had been shut down, which Ms Douglas confirmed was “recently suspended”,
saying an internal review found it “did not meet recommended standards”. “While we investigate options and a process to replace the units at Mareeba, we are utilising the sterilisation service at Atherton Hospital and this is working well,” she said. The meeting also passed five resolutions which will be sent to Health Minister Cameron Dick and other relevant authorities. Major resolutions included: a demand for the immediate restoration of health services and facilities that have been progressively reduced at Mareeba Hospital, that the State Government negotiate with the Federal Government on continue funding the COAG program at the hospital, that the State Government commit to providing dialysis services at the hospital and that the government acknowledge Mareeba as the largest referral centre on the Tablelands by systematically providing more services to meet the growing needs the community, including chemotherapy treatment to be made available. A motion of no confidence in the CHHHS and Mr Dick was also passed at the meeting. Speaking at the meeting, Cook MP Billy Gordon threatened to block the looming State budget unless the government agreed to the resolutions outlined. “I will commit to making sure that this government lives up to their word and makes sure
they commit to this community,” he said. “We need this community to have a hospital that services our needs.” Mr Gordon said he would ask for a written guarantee from Mr Dick that current services at Mareeba Hospital won’t be cut, services in the future won’t be cut and that the hospital will get more funding for any services that are needed to cater for community growth. Well-known local Dennis McKinley said as more families considered moving to Mareeba, they needed confidence that the town’s health and education systems were of a good standard. Kennedy MP Bob Katter praised the community for its fighting spirit, citing several times previously when they had gone in to fight to maintain services at the hospital. “If you’re going to close Mareeba Hospital, which one will stay open? This is the biggest inland town in Queensland north of Toowoomba, so you’re not just fighting for yourselves. You’re leading the fight for the rest of Australia.” CHHHS administrator Terry Mehan, who attended last week’s public meeting with Ms Douglas, will finish up his tenure this month when a new health service board is appointed. “We remain committed to working with community and stakeholder groups to address all issues raised,” Mr Mehan said.

Knuth backs Billy on crocs DALYRMPLE MP Shane Knuth has welcomed Cook MP Billy Gordon’s support for a controlled saltwater croc cull as Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) drafts legislation to make it legal. “Billy Gordon’s backing will strengthen the passage of our bill, providing the LNP doesn’t go weak at the knees,” Mr Knuth said. “Billy changed his mind after witnessing firsthand the fear crocs are instilling in Far Northern communities and the true number of crocs threatening human lives.” It comes after State Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles minister agreed to start removing saltwater crocodiles infesting Two Mile Creek at Biboohra. Mr Gordon previously told The Express that while he did not support culling crocs at Biboohra, he was open to a cull along populated, coastal areas where the animals were greater in number. The KAP’s legalisation will focus specifically on establishing egg harvesting, safari shooting, croc culling and removal, with input from Northern Territory crocodile expert Professor Grahame Webb. Prof Webb helped to formulate the Northern Territory’s successful crocodile management policies.
“Our bill will be tabled later this month,” Mr Knuth said. Meanwhile, Biboorha’s current zoning under the government’s new Queensland Crocodile Management Plan may be changed to a “Zone F Atypical Crocodile Habitat”, which would mean that for any future confirmed saltwater crocodile sighting, the animal would be automatically targeted by EHP for removal. Biboohra is currently in “Monitoring and Education Zone E” under the Plan, which means only crocodiles “displaying dangerous behaviour” within that zone can be targeted for removal by rangers. But Mr Knuth slammed the review as fiddling around the edges. “How does reviewing maps, upgrading croc zones, and encouraging people to report more croc sightings save lives and make our waters safe?,” he asked. Over the past six weeks, one man has been killed, another injured and a pet dog taken by crocodiles in separate incidents across the Far North. Mr Knuth is planning another public consultation tour in Cairns ahead of tabling the legislation in late May.
Could a saltwater croc cull work in the Far North?

Local motorists are being urged to change their bad driving habits and avoid a potentially fatal crash. PICTURE: QUEENSLAND POLICE
A ROAD safety organisation is urging local drivers to change their bad habits ahead of an annual event to highlight the issue. The Australian Road Safety Foundation (ASRF) will once again hold “Fatality Free Friday” on May 26, which aims to highlight Fridays as one of the deadliest days of the week on Australian roads. According to a new ASRF study, there were 252 people killed on Queensland roads alone in 2016, part of a staggering 1300 lives that were lost on roads across Australia in the same year. It comes after a 46-year-old woman was killed in a low-speed car crash at Malanda on May 2 after colliding with another driver on Catherine St near the intersection of Hanson Lane. And a 51-year-old Ravenshoe man was charged with drink driving after allegedly recording a blood alcohol reading of 0.234 per cent when intercepted by police last Wednesday afternoon. ARSF founder and CEO Russell White said reducing the loss of life on the roads can only stem from peer pressure and not from authorities dictating road laws. “We need to create a culture where we call each other out on bad behaviour behind the wheel, instead of shuffling the responsibility onto others,” he said.
“That’s what our Fatality Free Friday initiative is all about; educating road users on the individual role they play in reducing the devastating impact of road crashes.” The ASRF study also found that for drivers aged 25 and under, more than a quarter were experiencing a near miss at least once a week, more than double the percentage of drivers aged over 55 years. Mr White said Fridays remained one of the deadliest days of the week on Australian roads, accounting for 214 fatalities in 2016, or 16 per cent of the total road roll. “This Fatality Free Friday, we ask everyone to spare a thought for the loved ones left behind after a fatal road crash, for whom there are constant daily reminders,” he said. “We urge every motorist, passenger, cyclist and pedestrian to pledge their support for Fatality Free Friday, because every decision made on or around the road can be the difference between life and death.” Road users are encouraged to demonstrate their commitment to reducing the nation’s road toll by adding the Fatality Free Friday pledge to their Facebook and/ or Twitter page at twibbon.com/Support/ fatality-free-friday-3 For more information on the day, head to www.fatalityfreefriday.com.au

Dial-A-Doctor drives into region MOBILE medical service Dial-A-Doctor has officially started seeing patients in Mareeba and the Tablelands. As revealed by The Express back in March, the bulk-billing, after-hours service was secured by the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network in what will be a six month trial that started yesterday. Dial-A-Doctor will initially service Atherton, Tolga, Yungaburra, Malanda, Walkamin, Mareeba, Paddy’s Green, Arriga and Chewko, with further areas to be added as required. All doctors doing home visitors carry a supply of common medications and can also order blood tests and x-rays, and can supply patients with a referral to hospital if required. Once a consultation has concluded, the visiting doctor will forward a clinical report to the patient’s regular GP clinic so they are kept informed about the treatment administered.
Dial-A-Doctor director of operations Mike Dale previously told The Express that the service would encourage patients “not to push through an illness” but instead seek treatment at the beginning of it “rather than trying to do it themselves because they can’t afford it”. Neither Mareeba nor Atherton GP clinics offer bulk-billing, but Mr Dale stressed the service would bolster rather than take away from existing GP clinics by providing medical services after-hours when clinics were closed. Both Mareeba and Atherton are hamstrung by the fact the area is not allowed to recruit overseas-trained GPs, due to the region not being classified as a District of Workforce Shortage (DWS) by the Federal Department of Health. The map considers coastal towns such as Port Douglas and Innisfail as places that qualify as a DWS and therefore would allow
an overseas trained doctor to practice there, as well as access to the Medicare benefits which enables bulk billing. Under the Section 19AB of the Federal Health Insurance Act 1973, overseas-trained GPs must practice in a DWS for 10 years before they can go elsewhere for work. However, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has committed to reviewing Mareeba’s eligibility to be classed as a DWS, which would enable overseas trained doctors to practice in the area and gain access to Medicare benefits which enables bulk billing. Dial-A-Doctor was started in Cairns in 2010, but has since rolled out to Perth, Bunbury, Darwin, Melbourne, Bendigo, Sydney and Port Macquarie. Patients are able to call 1300 030 030 from 4pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays and 24 hours on Sunday and Public Holidays.
LNP announces new candidates
READY FOR ACTION: The LNP’s new candidate for Cook, Penny Johnson (above) and new candidate for Hill, Mario Quagliata (below).
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
A FORMER deputy mayor and cane farmer have been chosen to represent two Far Northern Seats for the Liberal National Party (LNP). Penny Johnson, a former deputy mayor of Cook Shire Council, will run for the seat of Cook while Feluga’s Mario Quagliata will contest the newly created of seat of Hill, which takes in the coastal towns of Innisfail and Mission Beach and much of the Tablelands – from Tolga through to Ravenshoe and Mt Garnet. Dimbulah is also taken in by the seat. Hill partly replaces the existing seat of Dalrymple, which has been broken into three separate electorates under the Queensland Redistribution Commission’s proposal. Katter’s Australian Party’s Shane Knuth is the incumbent. A final determination will be made on the new seats on May 26. Currently employed as a sales executive with Black Star Radio, Ms Johnson is well known in the region through her involvement with several organisations including Cape York Sustainable Futures, the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group and the Cooktown Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. She has also helped run a 4WD adventure tourism business with husband Bart and has three children. Mr Quagliata farms cane in the Feluga district near Tully and is married with two children. He has lived and worked in the area all his life and is passionate about cutting red tape and bureaucracy. Attending both pre-selections on the weekend, LNP state director Michael O’Dwyer said he was pleased with the calibre of both candidates. “The LNP held two highly successful pre-selections in Far North
Queensland over the weekend with local grassroots party members selecting quality candidates for the electorates of Cook and Hill,” he said. “Both Penny Johnson for Cook and Mario Quagliata for Hill bring with them an enormous amount of local knowledge in their respective seats and the energy to champion the issues that are of most importance to their communities.” No other political party has yet made an announcement on candidates for Hill or Cook so far. However, former Young Australian of the Year and indigenous activist Tania Major has declared her intention to seek pre-selection from Labor to contest Cook.

Renewable energy projects score big SEVERAL Far North renewable energy projects are contributing to more than $2 billion worth of projected investment in the sector across Queensland for this year. Georgetown’s $120 million Kidston Solar Project, MSF Sugar’s $75 million green power station at Arriga, the $360 million Mt Emerald Wind Farm, a $14 million Normanton solar farm and a solar farm at Lakeland worth $42.5 million all feature in the Clean Energy Council’s latest list of renewable energy projects that are under construction this year. State Energy Minister Mark Bailey said Queensland, including the Far North, was “ripe for sustainable renewable investment”. “We only have to look at projects such as the upcoming Longreach and Oakey solar projects by Canadian Solar, Genex’s Kidston project, and Edify Energy’s Whitsunday Solar farm as shining examples of the local and international interest Queensland continues to generate,” he said. “Already under construction in Queensland are nine solar and bagasse projects worth $964.5 million, providing 432 megawatts to our energy grid are bringing 750 jobs.
“And there are more to come - with another seven large-scale solar and wind renewable energy projects due to begin construction this year.” Once complete, MSF’s planned power station will generate 24 megawatts of electricity – enough to power every house in the Tablelands region. The station will use excess sugar cane fibre, known as bagasse, to produce the 24 megawatts of electricity. The project is expected to be completed by June next year, will create about 80 jobs during construction and invest more than $40 million on locally-sourced labour and materials. Genex Power’s Kidston Solar Project will eventually feature 540,000 solar panels generating 50MW of electricity. That translates to 145,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of power generation per annum, which is enough to power 27,000 homes. Construction of the solar farm will be done by 85 workers at its peak, to be recruited from Einasleigh, Georgetown, Townsville and the Tablelands. Meanwhile, major construction of Ratch Aus-

tralia’s Mt Emerald Wind Farm is well underway, with the 2400ha site to eventually be home to 53 wind turbines generating 180 megawatts of power. Ergon Energy agreed last May to buy all of the electricity generated by the wind farm through to the end of 2030, with the site to be fully operational by September 2018.
15 permanent staff will be employed once the wind farm is operational, with the wind turbines having a lifespan of about 25 years. Clean Energy Council CEO Kane Thornton said renewable energy was now “the cheapest kind of power generation possible to build today”.

BANANA farmers in Mareeba and the Tablelands are being urged to get the latest information on the fight against Panama disease at an “open day this Friday To be held at South Johnston, the day will comprise of a field tour and exhibits at a Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) research station to better understand Panama disease Tropical Race 4 (TR4). Growers will see and hear about tolerant banana varieties and the strategies being used to develop them, soil health practices, disin-
fectant demonstrations, remote and proximal sensing and understanding the effect of urea in the TR4 destruction process. ABGC chair Stephen Lowe said the half-day event would be a chance for growers to learn about some of the current applied research and development focussing on the short to long-term management of TR4. “All growers know of the constant threat TR4 poses to our industry and most are aware of the extensive history of research and development that has been, and continues to be,
carried out by researchers Australia wide,” Mr Lowe said. A key component of the day will be the launch of the new Banana Best Management Practices, On-farm Biosecurity manual, which is the latest tool designed for growers to help tackle on-farm biosecurity risks. The open day will be held this Friday at the South Johnstone DAF Research Station from 8.30am to 12.30pm. Band’s blast from the past thanks to historic photo THIS historic photo (left) has revealed the longevity of a popular Tablelands band. Dressed to the nines in their finest outfits, the photo depicts members of the Atherton Brass Band at the town’s Anzac Day march way back in 1947. Pictured amongst several well-known names is a young Chano Trentin, the late founder of Chano Trentin’s All Wheel Drive Centre and Trentin’s Music Centre. Known today as the Tablelands Brass Band, musical director Eleisha Anthony praised Mr Trentin’s contribution to the band over many decades. “Chano was our ultimate supporter,” she said. “He was the one who would call the council and negotiate our performances at different places. Katter slams government over local fugitive KENNEDY MP Bob Katter has expressed his disgust at the Federal government for threatening to deport a Julatten man over a false identity. Patton Eidson, 73, had his visa cancelled by the government on May 3 after serving jail time in 2013 for entering Australia on a false identity 30 years ago. Mr Eidson and his late wife Sonja fled the United States in 1986 after the Internal Revenue Service gave both of them an income tax bill of $1 million for alleged marijuana importation. The tax bill followed an investigation by police of Mr Eidson in 1984/85 surrounding a golf game he attended with two American acquaintances believed to have been involved in a cannabis ring. However, police never laid charges on Mr Eidson and he was cleared of any wrongdoing. Following the tax bill, the IRS also froze the Eidson’s bank accounts, confiscated Mrs Eidson’s car and repossessed their home. In a state of panic, the Eidsons reached out to a terminally ill American friend, Mike McGoldrick, who voluntarily gave them him and his wife Anita’s identity to the couple so they could flee the country and start a new life. The Eidsons subsequently fled to Australia, bought a property in Julatten and in 1991, opened a wellness retreat. They also gained Retiree Resident Visas. But in 2012, they were charged by Australian authorities for entering the country on a false identity, sentencing Mr Eidson to two years jail but with six months to serve at Lotus Glen prison. The couple’s Retiree Resident Visas were also revoked, forcing them to apply for an Aged Parenting Visa with their daughter Maya, an Australian citizen, as a sponsor. But with that visa now cancelled by the government, Mr Eidson’s fate rests in their hands. It is not known if he will be taken to Brisbane or the Christmas Island Detention Centre but Mr Eidson was under house arrest in Cairns last week by immigration authorities. Meanwhile, Mr Eidson’s daughter Maya had her citizenship revoked in 2015 with an immigration hearing scheduled for her case this August. Mr Katter said he was outraged by Mr Eidson’s plight. “This poor 73-year-old bloke who’s just lost his wife and was responsible for some alleged misdemeanour nearly half a century ago – to be detained by 15 police/government officers, it’s just sickening,” he said “If you’re using government resources to terrorise a well-loved, popular, respectable citizen you’d say it’s a waste of resources. Would one say these resources could be better used? Well quite frankly yes.”
sicians years of lasting enjoyment. An instrumental music teacher for five schools in the Atherton area, Ms Anthony said the band had a mix of young and old players but was always on the lookout for more members. “I have contact with a lot of kids who are already playing instruments and we try to get them in to the brass band,” she said. “We’re always at Australia Day and Anzac Day ceremonies. We try to play at Christmas Carols, the Maize Festival and all that kind of stuff.” The band will hold their annual “Brass and Concert Band Spectacular” at Atherton State High School’s community hall on May 20 from 6pm. It will also feature performances from the Cairns Brass Band. Cost is $10 for adults and children are free. Call Eleisha Anthony on 0414 313 870 or attend a rehearsal night at Atherton Pipe Band Hall Thurs at 7:30pm.
FNQ Foster Farm founder Sue Ehrman is putting the call out for help with training her resident horses.
Helping hands needed for local foster horses AN animal foster farm on the Tablelands is putting the call out for volunteers to help care for its resident horses. Lake Eacham’s FNQ Foster Farm is chasing experienced horse handlers that can either help train 20 foster horses on site or house some of them on their own properties to be trained under the guidance of farm founder Sue Ehrman. Foster Farm volunteer Ashleigh Hassett said Mrs Ehrman would give volunteers the necessary resources and training they will need. Volunteers who would like to foster a horse themselves will need to have a property that is free of weeds like spear grass. “You also have to be on-board with our program in order to maintain proper care of the horse,” Mrs Hassett said.
PAGE 8 The Express, Wednesday, May 10, 2017
“Not a lot of people know we are here on the Tablelands, whether they need to surrender an animal or adopt one. “Sue also helps with short-term accommodation for animals owned by people who may be renting and moving house or owners experiencing financial difficulties.” Several turkeys, cows and pigs are also available for adoption at the farm. Mrs Hassett said some of those animals looked after at the farm had a sad history. “I can’t believe some the stories about where these animals have come from and they deserve better,” she said. “There is a home out there for them.” Mrs Ehrman said Tablelands Regional Council is assisting the farm with finding a block of
land on which dedicated infrastructure could be built to conduct an “Equine-assisted therapy” program for troubled children and adults with various behavioural conditions such as autism and ADHD. “It’s very well documented now on how the program works,” she said. “You have to earn a horse’s trust. If you reach out to it, it will give that trust back. It’s very good for adults with ADHD because they may not realise when they’re getting angry but the horse will show them that they are.” The farm is able to accept most surrendered animals except for cats, dogs, bats or roosters. For more information on FNQ Foster Farm, visit www.fosterfarm.org, find them on Facebook or call 4095 3078 after 6pm.

Veteran outraged over imposter A HERBERTON World War II veteran is furious an outed military imposter attended a Tablelands Anzac Day service. Tony Tolcher, who claimed to have served with the Special Air Service Regiment, was exposed as a fraud by southern media late last month after official records showed he had never served in the military. Mr Tolcher, also known as Timothy Diamond, attended an Anzac Day ceremony in Watsonville, about a 40 minute drive south-west of Atherton. Former merchant sailor David Sims, 91, said Mr Tolcher’s actions were an insult to the real veterans who had served and suffered in war. “I’m really upset that some guy like this is impersonating the kids who went to war. I was at the age of 18 when I went away and thousands of others were the same,” he said. “He’s probably been conning people into feeling sympathetic for him when they shouldn’t be.” Mr Sims served as a radio officer in the merchant navy aboard an armed Dutch merchant ship, the SS Japara, from 1944 until the war’s end. The ship was crewed by Dutch officers and gunners from the US Army’s Special Services division, trans-

porting vital supplies and equipment to troops fighting against the Japanese in New Guinea. Mr Sims said some of those he served with aboard the Japara were killed during the war, making Mr Tolcher’s actions all the more despicable. “Obviously, veterans such as myself…still remember many of the young friends with whom we served and are very upset by any person who desecrates the memory of thousands who died or were injured,” he said. Mr Sims is the last World War II veteran left in Herberton.
Could a third flight school catering to Chinese students soon be operating at Mareeba Airport?
Chamber, Entsch back flight school plan THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has tentatively backed a proposal to develop a flight school for Chinese students at the town’s airport. Chamber president Joe Moro was supportiuve of the concept after Leichhardt MP Warrant Entsch backed it in a statement last week. “The important thing is there are benefits for the town,” Mr Moro said. Four representatives from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Education Group visited Mareeba and Cairns Airports last week to meet with key aviation stakeholders as they look at how the flight school proposal for Mareeba could work. The university group was hosted by Australian Education Overseas directors Carl Williams and Victoria Cuda. Thousands of new pilots are
currently in demand for China every year, with the country’s airspace restrictions and increasing lack of land forcing educators to look elsewhere. “I’m not surprised that so many local aviation companies and other stakeholders have already expressed their interest in, and strong support for, this concept,” he said. Mr Entsch added that the establishment of a flying school would support many of the focuses in the White Paper on Developing Northern Australia. “The White Paper recognises that around half of the world’s air traffic growth over the next 20 years will be to, from, or within the Asia Pacific region with passenger numbers expected to grow by 1.8 billion,” he said. “I welcome the interest from Australian Education Overseas and

the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Education Group in this industry. Initiatives from the private sector that will help attract new airline connections and international investment and grow the aviation sector in northern Australia will play a critical role in the long term development of the region.” Mr Moro said the flight school proposal boded well with Mareeba Shire Council’s strategy to attract investment into the airport as the facility undergoes an $18 million upgrade. “I hope it comes to fruition. The Chamber will be watching with anticipation,” he said. Mareeba Airport is currently home to a fixed-wing flight school, the North Queensland Club, and a helicopter flight school run by GBR Helicopters.

Local croc cull not needed here It’s a long stretch to use the reported presence of relatively small-sized salt water crocodiles in both man-made and natural water features as a valid reason to justify a call for generalised culling of the crocodile population. It would seem more realistic to adopt a case management approach and either capture or eradicate the reptiles from those Tableland areas that hitherto have not been natural habitats for the animals. It appears that the animals in question are highly likely to be escapees from commercial farms or have been released by irresponsible persons in our community. Perhaps those who breed crocodiles and benefit from such activity commercially should shoulder some of the financial responsibility for the cost of trapping or eradication in these circumstances. A case by case management approach would allow the local circumstances of each particular situation to determine action to either remove or eradicate wild crocodiles. As such, each area such as Mulgrave River, Barron River (above/below Barron Falls), Walsh River and the Daintree River could be treated differently, with the relative issue of public safety in mind. This would seem to be a more logical approach. After all, those fat-walleted tourists probably want to swim croc-free in Lake Placid but would still like to see the big salties in the Daintree River.
It would be interesting to know how much knowledge has been gleaned by the authorities in consultation with indigenous elders and past crocodile hunters, to add to the science already available. Such information might fill gaps in our understanding of how past populations dealt with the presence of saurians in their midst and what type of balance in nature was maintained. At present, the calls for a generalised cull imply a belief by some that there is only one way to live with crocodiles. It is to be hoped that in their considerations, politicians will respond to the issue in an informed and considered manner, not with the alacrity and alarm that is being expressed by some in the community. Kerry Linwood, ATHERTON
Council inaction over NBN tower I am utterly thrilled that Mareeba Shire Council, under the guidance of Anthony Archie, is moving into the 21st century and embracing the concept of Solar Power by installing PV panels on the Rankin St and Kowa St administrative buildings. It is a great pity that the council have chosen to force me back into the early 20th century by approving the erection of a 30 metre NBN tower some eight metres from my domestic boundary. The shadow cast by this tower has cut my solar power by 70 per cent. The Mayor, Tom Gilmore, with the backing of the planning officer has assured me that all legal requirements have been adhered to and that the council has no responsibility for my losses. When dealing with ratepayers, who are after all the employers of council staff, these people have lost the concept of moral and ethical considerations. Roger Colclough, Dimbulah

Liberal budget disgrace I think it’s time for the Liberal Federal Government and their State Government or Opposition counterparts to hang their head in shame The most recent announcement by Malcolm Turnbull is that tertiary fees are going up again by 20 per cent to offset the growing burden of student debt and unpaid HECS Fees. I am not saying that there is not a student debt crisis because there is and it will hit $186 billion dollars by 2026, which represents 46 per cent of public debt in Australia. But the problem is exasperated by the knee jerk reaction of Mr Turnbull to increase fees because there is already an unaffordability problem for students to pay these debts and loans. Has Mr Turnbull and his Liberal Party mates forgotten what has actually caused this problem? The root cause of the problem is the decreased funding to universities and now Mr Turnbull is planning on making a further 20 per cent reduction. Have the errors of the Campbell Newman Government been forgotten? As funding is cut to tertiary Institutions they are required to increase fees with the fees and debt going around and around like a merry go round, with education the loser and students being unable to afford tertiary places. The continued cuts by the LNP to health, educations, child care, disability services and arts and culture makes our society and Australia a harsher and harsher place to live. Far North already do it tough with more than average food, transport, fuel and utilities costs and when you combine it with the savage cuts conducted by this uncaring Coalition Government ,you then have a society being split apart., The Coalition resist pressure by Labor to conduct an inquiry into the banking and insurance industry yet they hit the average man and woman in the street with higher and higher costs that impact all levels of life. I want to remind readers in the Port Douglas/Mossman and Tableland region that our major employer and income earner is the tourist industry, but when the average Australian cannot afford their health insurance or to send their children to university without their kids becoming stuck in a quagmire of debt then the luxuries of holidays is
put to the back burner and that affects our region more than most. Mr Turnbull is a man who stands for nothing, he is chained to the far right and only knows how to protect the top end of town leaving the battlers struggling for a living. It is time to reflect upon values of equality, fairness and justice at the next election not the harshness and cruelty that this LNP party inflicts upon us. Alan Hollway, Port Douglas
Catherine St parking a nightmare The Catherine Street parking would have to be the biggest band-aid stuff up within Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and it would be nice if Councillor Bronwyn Voyce would ever turn up to the four meetings that were held at the school about this issue. I think councillors are forgetting that they are there to represent the ratepayers in their divisions who vote them in and can also vote them out. From the start, council has turned a blind eye and have not once tried to contact Shane Knuth, who is always willing to help in the community. My son and I are disgusted at the lack of common sense and excuses council makes, but yet they would prefer to waste our money elsewhere instead of looking after the safety of our children and grandchildren. We have developed a workable traffic proposal by measuring out everything at the school centre parking in the Main St, which is wasted space. It is a practical plan that makes use of the limited space by turning it into angle parking and vastly improving the safety of everyone, while also still utilising the bus stop. We have not forgotten the businesses across from the school needing parking as well. We are throwing down the challenge to Mayor Joe Paronella and Cr Voyce to have a meeting with us and Shane Knuth. Catherine St is a nightmare and our plan would ensure parents and grandparents are able to drop off and pick up their children safely. Our teachers will also have the room to use for parking as they always have many books to carry. I realise some people are not wanting Catherine St turned into a one way street but for the safety of our children and our next generation, it’s the only way. There are over 15 schools that have one way streets around them. Let’s put safety first. We are asking everyone to get behind this initiative and voice their view with what we are proposing for centre parking along Main Street - to turn it into 86 useable angle parks instead of wasted space. The current setup means it is very hard to find a park without having to walk a distance to the classroom, especially when you have a young one to carry as well. Maybe more councillors could also come out and hear and see what has been going on for many years. The TRC must surely be running out of Band-Aids. Darryl Drury, Rangeview
Highway funding farce WHILE venturing into the darkest reaches of their far flung electorates, Bob Katter and Shane Knuth have discovered the Palmerston Highway. Not only have they found the highway, they have found that it’s in a bad state. But wait, there’s more – they stumbled onto a rich vein of gold leading all the way to the Queensland Main Roads Minister’s office, said to be worth $3M which can be used to patch up the road. This momentous news was reported in the Murdoch newspaper on April 25. Caught up in the excitement, the normally impartial editor of that paper lauded the discovery in his editorial. His lavish praise for Mr Knuth’s apparent success in getting the Labor Government to stump up the money may be a little premature given the tricky nature of politicians’ promises about funding. My suspicions were aroused by the apparent speed of the response by the Minister to Mr Knuth’s request. Ministers don’t usually have a few spare millions tucked away to meet spur-of-the-moment calls from members wishing to gain some quick political mileage. My bet is that the $3 million promised is not new money for roads in our region but very likely will be taken from allocations to other road maintenance projects less politically sensitive. While any spending to improve the road is welcome, the $3 million promised to patch up the Henrietta Creek section (once again) falls far short of the amount which will be required to fund the much needed major upgrade of this important highway. A more sober assessment of the Katter team’s discovery would conclude that the deplorable state of this vital transport link is just another piece of evidence (amongst many) of their ineffectiveness of our State and Federal Parliamentary representatives over many years. Hockey team revels in Masters challenge AN Atherton-based women’s hockey team has gained valuable skills after competing at last month’s World Masters Games in Auckland. North Oz Magic finished a respectable 9th out of 16 places in the Games’ Over 35’s B Grade category, with all players benefitting from the experience. The team lost two games, drew two games and won two games. Team captain Pamela Clearwater said playing on a turf field presented a challenge for her 15-strong squad, who had to quickly match the pace of op-
position teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. “We normally play on grass and we were playing against teams used to turf, so our skills really improved,” she said. “We played and gelled as a team really well. I’m really proud of the girls.” Clearwater also praised the camaraderie shown amongst all teams competing North Oz Magic is already making plans to raise money to go to the next World Masters Games in Japan in four years time.

Champion boxer Ann bounces to bronze inspires local MUTCHILBA grandmother Ann Adams has produced a sizzling performance on the basketball court to win a bronze medal in last month’s World Masters Games in Auckland. Adams, 63, was selected to compete in the “Queensland Cactus” team at the event in the B Grade Over 60’s age group, where she faced tough competition from teams all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand and even Hungary. Playing with a broken dominant left hand, Adams pushed through the pain to help her team to a podium finish. “My broken hand didn’t put me off my game. I just blocked out the pain and took some painkillers,” she said. “The Hungarians were the hardest to play against. They took out the gold.” Cactus recorded five wins and three losses, including their third-place playoff 24-21 victory against Orsum O. Adams said her family were thrilled with her achievement, a testament to her training regimen which she was kept up in between working as a teacher aide at Mutchilba State School. “My son called me from Singapore and said “Mum, it’s nice to see you’re kicking butt at your age”,” she said. “It’s a great feeling.” Adams, an icon of the Mareeba basketball community for more than 50 years, also took out bronze with Cactus at last November’s Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast, playing alongside fellow local Rhonda Adil.

THANKS, MATE: Champion boxer Scott Mahoney (right), gives Michael Perks his lucky boots.
UP-and-coming Tablelands boxer Mick Perks has received the ultimate gift from one of the sport’s true champions. Perks, known as “The Weapon”, was given three-time Australian Super-Heavyweight Amateur Boxing Champion "Stone Cold" Scott Mahoney’s lucky boxing boots after the pair held a recent training session at Yungaburra Boxing Gym. “These boots have served me well through many Championship bouts and
I hope that the boots will bring Perks as much luck as they brought me,” Mahoney said. The veteran congratulated Perks on his dedication to training, which has put him on the road to becoming a champion boxer. Perks has won four from four fights and is looking for a fifth win in his next bout this Saturday at Babinda Showgrounds from 5:30pm.

THE Mareeba Bulls were unable to beat Leichhardt after drawing 2-all away in their Round 4 catch-up game last Tuesday night. After a 4-0 thrashing by Innisfail two weeks before, the Bulls were looking to bounce back but were caught on the back foot early when Leichhardt’s Foua Thao scored in the 16th minute to go 1-0 up. Despite several chances, the Bulls failed to equalise in the first half. Mareeba veteran David Ruiz would be the one to break the impasse when he nailed a shot in the 67th minute before Leichhardt’s Nicholas Roth replied in the 80th minute to put the Lions back in front. But promising Bulls midfielder Jason Haydon saved
the day, scoring just three minutes later to close out the match at 2-all. The game was not without controversy following a red card to Lion Cody Eszes in extra time. Mareeba coach Alex Srhoj said it was a similar story from his side, who dominated possession but could not convert their chances. “We haven’t been playing bad. In both games against Leichhardt and Innisfail we were the better team, but football is a funny game sometimes,” he said. “We just need to remind ourselves of who we are and who we play for. Our pride has been knocked around a bit, and I was expecting the boys to come out and prove it’s only a minor lapse.”

Plowman the difference in Bulls win
ON FIRE: Bulls Paul Ruiz scored two goals in two minutes last Sunday. PHOTO: Leevi Elmes.
THE return of captain Alex Plowman and a vocal home crowd has lifted the Mareeba Bulls to an emphatic 4-1 win over Southside Comets at Borzi Park last Sunday. On the back of a bleak run, the Bulls fought out a tough first half, highlighted by Paul Ruiz’s goal in the 13th minute, after the Comets scored an early first goal. Starting off the bench, Plowman came on early in the 32nd minute with Nicholas Tallarico forced from the field with injury. The defender’s influence on the match was evident and the Bulls kicked up a gear in the second half when striker Paul Ruiz scored two goals in two minutes to blow the Comets away and capping off a hat-trick. Steven Cater then finished off the afternoon with the Bulls fourth in the 69th minute, closing out the match 4-1. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj was relieved his side were back to their winning ways. “We played well, we again had to recover from a poor start, but the boys kept

Gladiators unlucky against Tully Tigers TWO missed conversions proved the difference in the Mareeba Gladiators 18-14 loss to Tully Tigers last Saturday night. Their first match after three weeks off and playing away at Tully Showground, it was always going to be a tough ask for Mareeba. But the Gladiators were far from lethargic, rolling in two tries to Tully’s one before half-time to go 10-4 up at the break. The Gators scored another in the second half, but Sonny Kerr again failed to convert, while the Tigers got one back plus a penalty kick. Mareeba did enough to hold their skinny 14-12 lead until the last five minutes when a defensive lapse allowed Tully to cross for a third try and close out the game at 18-14. Gladiators coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said it was a good effort from his men despite Tully’s last minute try. “Having those two points from those conversions definitely would have helped, but with our first game back in four weeks, we were a bit
rusty,” he said. “Tully are a top four side at the moment so it was a good hit-out.” Co-captain Maddie Oosen, Boche Satrick and Henare Maeva all scored tries on the night, while Ingebrigtsen singled out the contribution of forward Ben Cocciolone, who made his return to Mareeba after duties with the Northern Pride Under 20s squad. “It was Ben’s first game back on the weekend and he was sensational,” Ingebrigtsen said. Mareeba will face Edmonton at Davies Park this Saturday, with Ingebrigtsen hoping for a complete performance in front of a home crowd. “It’ll be good to play back-to-back weeks and get some footy back under our belt,” he said. “We’ll get back on the saddle and go again. At this half-way point in the season, I’m definitely happy with we’re sitting.” The Gladiators will face Edmonton Storm at Davies Park this Saturday from 6pm.

their character and belief,” he said. “In the second half we blew them away.” Srhoj praised Plowman for his contribution on the night after returning from injury. “Alex is one of the best defenders in the league, so his influence on our confidence showed when he came on,” he said. Youngsters Jaydon Wells and Zane Singelton were outstanding at the back as well for Mareeba, giving Srhoj some selection headaches with the reserves also now finding form after a 1-0 win against the Comets. Of the five senior games played by Mareeba teams over the weekend, the club enjoyed four wins and a draw. And in a sign of how close the FNQ Premier League is, the Bulls have gone from fourth to first on the ladder thanks to goal difference, while the Comets dropped to fourth. Mareeba now has the bye this weekend.
Roosters Tyson Burchell in action during last Sunday’s game against the Cairns Kangaroos.
IT was a case of the one that got away for the Atherton Roosters after just falling short to go down to the Cairns Kangaroos 20-18 last Sunday. Leading 18-16 with six minutes remaining at Vico Oval, the Roosters let their lead slip when Roos crashed over in the corner to secure the win. Atherton led 12-8 at the break but a strong restart from the home side soon had Cairns ahead 16-12. A try in the 74th minute pushed the Roosters back in front 18-16 and they looked set for a victory in the tough contest. But some poor ball handling by Atherton in front of their own goal posts allowed the Roos back in the game and they soon cracked the visitors’ defence for the winning try. Roosters coach Dean Howard said his side was again guilty of unforced errors which were costly in the final minutes. “We coughed up the ball about four times in the last five minutes after a good fight back to put us in front,” he said. “They had us pinned on our own line and in the end we couldn’t hold them out in those final minutes." The Roosters play away against Yarrabah in all three grades from 12pm this Sunday at Jilara Oval. Results of other Cairns District Rugby League Agrade games played over the weekend – Brothers 38 def Suburbs 14, Innisfail 24 def Yarrabah 4, Tully 18 def Mareeba 14 and Ivanhoes 60 def Edmonton 8.
People of all ages from across the region flocked to Atherton last Saturday for the Tablelands Outdoor Recreation, Health and Wellbeing Expo, held at Merrilands Hall. Expert advice was on hand from guest speakers, including rugby league great Shane Webcke and local businessman Warren Jonsson (pictured).
