Gators’ Auction Success

The Mareeba Gladiators held their annual jersey auction last Friday night, with the club raising $12,850. Jersey number 9 (hooker position) was bought for $1,100 by the Mareeba RSL, which was the overall top price. Turn to page 27 for more. ‘Thanks for voting’ By Carl Portella Queensland State Opposition leader Lawrence Springborg, flanked by both deputy, JohnPaul Langbroek and assistant shadow minister for North Queensland Jason Costigan, paid a flying visit to Mareeba last Tuesday March 3; as part of their statewide tour to thank more than one million people who voted for the LNP at the election. “We’re here to thank more than one million people throughout Queensland who voted for

us at the election,” he said. “No other party got that amount of votes, but the way the preferences went; obviously not enough to win, but still a significant number. “Over the next few weeks, we will make our way around the state, talking to people about what they liked about our campaign and what we need to change. “Unfortunately, good hard working people like David Kempton got washed away with the changes; and we are here to see what we can do at the next election to change that.

“The public voted the way they did because of the attitude of the government, not the performance of the government. “What we have to do is make sure we do change. “From an opposition perspective, we don’t intend to be a typical negative opposition; we will give credit where credit is due and we plan to keep the government accountable of its promises, of which there weren’t many. “They told the public what the were not going to do; not what they were going to do, they probably got the biggest

surprise of all when they got into office. “We will have a very strong focus on jobs, employment and infrastructure; things that will be crucial to the state going forward.” When asked about preferential voting, Mr Springborg had this to say: “When you look at the 89 seats, in 51 of those seats, the LNP came first. “We do have a system of preferential voting, but it just didn’t go in our favour and we accept that. Desire to curb female cancer AFTER recent success of International Women’s Day on March 8, Cancer Council Queensland is calling for women across the state to create a personalised cancer prevention plan. Typically, 3500 Queensland women are diagnosed with cancer each year, with far too many caused by excessive sunbaking or smoking cigarettes. Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said the day provided an excellent opportunity for women to re-think their overall health. “This International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity for women to prioritise their wellbeing and start thinking about healthy lifestyle behaviours that can prevent illness and disease and enrich quality of life. “Up to one third of all cancer cases are preventable with a few simple changes to lifestyle factors. “At the top of our list are eating healthily and exercising regularly, avoiding alcohol, quitting smoking, and staying smart in the sun. “We’re calling on women to take action today to prevent a cancer diag-

nosis tomorrow.” Ms Clift added that 90 per cent of all cervical cancer diagnosis’s could be effectively prevented with a pap smear. “Get a prevention plan in place and ask your GP to recommend a screening protocol based on your individual risk factors and family history,” Ms Clift said. “Self-checks are also essential for women. We urge all women to be aware of changes in their body, such as lumps, sores or ulcers that don’t heal, unexplained weight loss, and unusual changes in the breasts and nipples. “Symptoms of cancer can include nagging coughs, persistent changes in bowel movements, recurring abdominal pain or bloating, and moles that change shape, colour or size. “Queensland women who experience any of these symptoms should see their GP – early detection could save their life. “We’re calling on all Queenslanders to mark International Women’s Day by encouraging the women in their lives to create a personal cancer prevention plan.

Katie Clift is keen for women to improve their overall health.

MANY people would agree Atherton State High School Student Support Teacher Gil Jansen has a unique outlook on the world. It is through life experiences and family that he has been able to create a lifetime of making other people laugh through tasteful humour. Mr Jansen started performing comedy at parties during his late teens and early twenties. Several friends were impressed with his original material; and he then began doing Christmas parties and weddings. “All of my material is predominantly based on puns and life experiences,” he said. “Some of these experiences even range from time I’ve spent

in hospital.” These hospital experiences range from when Mr Jansen had part of his finger taken off in an accident, along with witnessing the birth of his children. A man who enjoys doing pub gigs, Mr Jansen said he is always ‘prepared’ for hecklers and is very careful about what material he selects for shows. “I only believe in family friendly humour,” he said. “I think it is cheating to write any crude or sexual material. “It’s always better to write material that people can actually listen to.” Prior to beginning his teacher career in 2001, Mr Jansen spent time working in the agriculture, factory and packaging industries. Thousands of hours across

all of these vocations armed him with a plethora of stories and jokes which can be enjoyed by all of us. Even in light of certain tragedies (including death), Mr Jansen has opted for comic relief to help himself and others see the lighter side of life. Students within the school are constantly amused with Mr Jansen’s humour and he often assists others in sharing his love of comedy. Certain events (including assemblies) have allowed for students to read Mr Jansen’s material and he has been able to pass on his knowledge to them. As each day goes by, Mr Jansen’s mind continues to always ticking away, coming up with material to make people smile.

40 years of service By Justin Fris

DEDICATED Mareeba local Annie Bailey recently received recognition of completing 40 years of service with Girl Guides Mareeba. Mrs Bailey, who joined the girl guides in 1945 (when she was 12 years old) has dedicated a lifetime of assisting young girls to learn essential lifeskills. These skills have ranged from certain arts and crafts, with Mrs Bailey teaching the guides how to sew and knit clothing items and sock puppets. Various camping trips across the state were always a favourite for all involved, with everyone learning something new every time. Whether it be cooking damper from scratch or making a table out of sticks, Mrs Bailey always had plenty of activities to keep the guides occupied, along with a full stomach. In 1975, she became an official

guides leader and in 1990 founded the ‘Gumnuts’, a guide program for children beginning primary school. Her tenure and willingness to assist people led her all the way up to November 25 last year, when health issues limited her ability to attend regularly. Mrs Bailey’s daughters Alice Ree and Julie Henderson are both immensely proud of their mother’s achievements. So much so, they are still able to recount fond memories to this day. Ms Henderson said the trio had noticed several changes to the girl guides in recent times, but their enthusiasm had never dampened. “When Mum began in the girl guides in 1945, they were just coming out of the depression,” she said. “They made do with what they had. “It was nice to see guides from across the region to congregate in Cairns and board the train to

Kuranda to celebrate ‘Thinking Day’ last month. “Mum was then called up and presented with her 40 years of service badge, which was a lovely moment for all of us.” Such was Mrs Bailey’s desire to keep costs down for her guides, she used to collect papers and pass them on to a truck driver heading to Innisfail. The driver would then pay Mrs Bailey (with the papers going to Innisfail to be recycled), with all proceeds going toward guide girl events and lowering registration fees. Girl Guides Mareeba are an integral part of the community and are always on the lookout for new members and volunteers who would like to be involved. If you would like further information, please contact Julie Henderson (Guide Leader) on 0427 858 712. Naroo (Annie’s guide name) Bravo Bravo Naroo!

LNP has a strong focus From page 1 “We received 41 per cent of the primary vote, whereas the ALP received 37 per cent of the vote; but that’s the system. “We now have to work hard to be a formidable effective opposition; and if we are, we can then be an effective alternative government. “I would like to call on the Labor Government to honour the commitment we made to the Far Northern

region, because the money is there. It has been set aside; including money for the Mareeba Airport, the waste water treatment plant, the sporting precinct. “The people of Mareeba deserve that commitment and they should at least honour that.” Mr Springborg reiterated that the funding promises made by the LNP to regions that were not tied to asset leasing should be honoured; and that the LNP will be perusing those funded

promises. More will also be investigated about the Labor Government now looking to sell “non-strategic” assets. Not even a month into government, and already a broken promise. Helicopter patrols will be a fixture across FNQ skies in coming months.

Helicopter patrols are keeping us safe FAR North Queensland will be abuzz with helicopter patrols in coming weeks, in a bid to aid Powerlink Queensland’s successful monitoring of their high voltage network. Powerlink Chief Executive Merryn York said the patrols would take place over March and April; and added that they were essential in a bid to successfully maintain the network. “Our aim is to be as quick and non-disruptive as we can when completing these patrols,” Ms York said.

“We want to minimise any potential disturbance to local communities near Powerlink’s transmission lines while this essential work is carried out. We appreciate their cooperation and patience.” Ms York added Powerlink was aware of the needs of local residents, which have been passed on to all of the helicopter pilots. “Local residents may see the helicopter moving relatively quickly and at a low level along our transmission lines, and in some instances, the heli-

copter may need to pause to enable closer inspection of the lines,” she said. If you have any further questions on the patrols, or need further insight on your information, there are several ways to go about it. “If you have a Powerlink easement on or near your property and would like to register your details to receive more info, or to ensure your contact details are up to date, call us on FREECALL 1800 635 369 (during business hours),” Ms York said.

Powerlink Queensland’s electricity transmission network transports power from where it is generated to the distribution networks owned locally by Ergon Energy. Annual inspections of Powerlink’s electricity transmission network are important for safety and maintenance reasons. As a part of these annual checks, helicopter patrols will take place in your area throughout the year. During the aerial inspections, the helicopter will fly at a low level along our transmission lines. In some instances the helicopter will pause momentarily for closer inspection. We aim to be as quick and non-disruptive as possible, but there is the potential for some noise during the inspection. Low-flying helicopters also have the potential to startle some livestock. If you have a Powerlink easement on or near your property and would like to register your details to receive more information about upcoming helicopter patrols in your area, or to ensure your details are up to date, please contact us on FREECALL 1800 635 369 (during business hours). You can also visit www.powerlink.com.au (go to ‘Landowners and Property/Helicopter activities’) to obtain the latest information on upcoming helicopter patrols.

MUSICAL students across the Tablelands applied themselves diligently over the last weekend, participating in the North Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program conference in Cairns. 171 students across the Far North participated in the weekend long event, where they were given rigourous tutoring, ahead of a special concert at St Mary’s college. Students from Atherton, Malanda and Mareeba State School’s applied themselves well and took away significant experience. Atherton State High School music teacher Eleisha Anthony said many of the students spent up to 12 hours rehearsing their performance, which was held in a packed auditorium. ‘The concert was a great success,” she said. “It’s obvious that the students have applied themselves, as they presented a very tight, well rehearsed set of repertoire. “It takes a lot of concentration to play this well with people you’ve never met and under a conductor you’ve never followed.”

Road limits will apply at Grove Creek Bridge, Speewah and the Walsh River Bridge at Springmount.

Bridge concerns Last year, the Mareeba Shire Council engaged consultants to undertake level three inspections on a number of bridges across the Shire. Their report has now been received; and it indicates that two bridges are of concern. It requires load limits to be placed on them, until they can be replaced or repaired. The two bridges in question are the bridge over Grove Creek, Speewah and the bridge over the Walsh River, Springmount. Council has imposed the recommended load limits of five and eight tonnes on these bridges respectively. The consultants are reviewing the report to see if temporary propping of these bridges will allow council to raise the load limits. Work will begin on the Grove Creek Bridge on Speewah Road today (Wednesday, March 11), much to the delight of the MSC.

To undertake the required works, it is necessary that the bridge is closed between the hours of 10am and 2pm, with naturally weather permitting. “On receipt of the level three report, council officers moved immediately to impose a load and speed limit to ensure community safety,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “Council also contacted many users of the bridge who would be carrying heavy loads, such as waste collection, school buses, etc to ensure that they were aware and would have continued access subject to permit conditions. “Council will be able to reinforce the existing structure over Grove Creek and anticipates the load limit will be increased to 20 tonne once this is completed, but the speed limit of 10kph will remain the same,” Cr Gilmore said.

“Council had applied to the Federal Government for funding assistance to replace the Grove Creek Bridge at Speewah, and fortuitously it was announced that we have been successful in this application the day after we received the report on the bridge,” Mayor Gilmore said. A Speewah community meeting will be arranged shortly to discuss the works required to replace the bridge. In the meantime people are asked to contact council in advance should they require a permit to cross the bridges with vehicles exceeding the weight limit. Should anyone require to cross these bridges with vehicles exceeding this they need to contact Council on 1300 308 461 and request a permit, which will be considered.

Malanda Chamber gets ball rolling By Justin Fris

THE Malanda Chamber of Commerce (MCOC) has begun 2015 brightly, outlining their overall strategy for the upcoming year. MCOC President Geraldine McGuire took to the stage and initially spoke about the enterprising Australian Tropical Agricultural Project (ATAP); and how progress on the proposal was going. In an interview with The Express, Dr McGuire said the forum was extremely well at-

Y W NO SPLA DI N O

tended and members of the public added quality feedback to the evening. “The public was very receptive of the evening, in particular the Australian Tropical Agricultural Project,” she said. Dr McGuire added that the MCOC had collated a wealth of data on several key issues within the local area and regularly briefed the Tablelands Regional Council of their findings. MCOC will remain committed to a ‘buy local’ campaign and plan to have another community and business forum in May.

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) was represented by Geoff Stocker, who attended the evening. A MCOC statement from the evening added: “Malanda works on its own behalf; and looks to the council to support the citizens who take initiative and support themselves to build a Tablelands that continues to thrive.”

KAP urges QLD Government to consider regional roads MEMBER for Mt Isa Robbie Katter has called for Palaszczuk Government officials to attend a key regional roads forum in Hughenden tomorrow. “The Hughenden Chamber of Commerce, Hann Highway Action Group and Flinders Shire Council are holding a Regional Roads Forum to convince government ministers, senators, high level government officers, development officers and groups that the completion of the Hann Highway must be a priority to provide an inland alternative road from Cairns to Melbourne. “I have continually battered the government on the importance of the Hann

KAP leader Bob Katter, with members of the Hann Highway action group.

Highway, not just to the North West, but to the whole of Queensland. “It will shave off eight hours and 800 kilometers from the Cairns to Melbourne trip and will enable the use of triple road trains. “One triple road train can take the place of two B Doubles on the highway and will save congestion, wear and tear on the Bruce Highway, which is a huge carrot for government. The Hann Highway provides a safer alternative to the Bruce Highway, for tens of millions of dollars can be stranded in the north, limiting our exposure to the alternative of imports when the Bruce Highway is cut off.”

“It will also provide a safer, less flood prone alternative to the Bruce Highway. This is a true Nation Building Project,” Mr Katter said. Fellow KAP member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth said he was ‘very supportive’ about the Hann Highway project. “Along with shaving off time between the Tablelands to Melbourne trip, it will also open access for agriculture and to the western mineral province,” he said. “We’re hoping for a new change from the ALP (Palaszczuk Government) along with the federal government to get on board.”

This International Women’s Day Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift is calling on Far North Queensland ladies to make a pledge to prioritise their health.

Sisters are doin’ it for their health!

We are women, hear us roar, in numbers too big to ignore! This Sunday March 8 is International Women’s Day, and Far North Queensland ladies - let’s use our girl power to make it count. We’re asking you, girlfriend - to celebrate your existence this International Women’s Day by making a pledge for better health. The latest statistics reveal thousands of female cancer diagnoses could be avoided each year in our Sunshine State. In fact, around 3500 Queensland female cancers diagnosed annually are caused by modifiable behaviours, such as smoking and too much sun exposure. This International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity to prioritise our wellbeing and start thinking about healthy lifestyle behaviours that can prevent illness and disease, and enrich quality of life. We know up to one third of all cancers are preventable with a few simple lifestyle changes, and it’s easy to take action today. At the top of list are changes like eating healthily and exercising regularly, avoiding alcohol, quitting smoking, and staying smart in the sun. Along with these preventative measures, we’re urging Far North Queensland ladies to include early detection and screening as part of an overall cancer prevention plan. Up to 90 per cent of all cervical can-

Roo rescue for baby joey

Ros Goldsmith and Monique Moreno with ‘Rainbow’

cers can be prevented through Pap smears, and regular mammograms can reduce a woman’s risk of breast cancer death by 25 per cent, particularly for those aged 50 to 69. Get a prevention plan in place and ask your GP to recommend a screening protocol based on your individual risk factors and family history. Self-checks are also essential for us girls - be aware of the changes in your body, such as lumps, sores or ulcers that don’t heal, unexplained weight loss, and unusual changes in the breast and nipples. Symptoms of cancer can include nagging coughs, persistent changes in bowel movements, recurring abdominal pain or bloating, and moles that change shape, colour or size – if you experience any of these symptoms see your GP. Early detection could save your life. This year, around 540 Far North Queensland women will be diagnosed with cancer, and sadly around 175 women will die from the disease. So Far North Queensland gals, this International Women’s Day let’s get behind the movement - make a pledge to prioritise your health! Our action today could help save lives tomorrow More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available at www.cancerqld.org.au or Cancer Council’s 13 11 20.

A baby joey was successfully rescued by a Mareeba local, who was in the middle of her wheelbarrow race training last week. Monique Moreno was going through her regular training with fellow runner David Ward, for the upcoming wheelbarrow race, when she came across ‘Rainbow’ the joey. Roadside, Monique was able to initially tuck Rainbow into her shirt and place him in her wheelbarrow. Once home, she called Tablelands Wildlife Rescue and spoke with Ros Goldsmith. Ms Goldsmith recalled the exact moment she received the call, forewarning Monique that she was in

her pyjamas. “You’ll have to excuse my attire because I’m not dressed, I’m in pyjamas,” she told Monique. “I then jumped into the car and headed straight down.” Ms Goldsmith then took Rainbow back to her residence for a preliminary weight check (419 grams), and was then placed in a humidicrib. Rainbow has a fantastic opportunity for a normal healthy life and will be taken to a designated ‘release site’, once she is a bit older. Monique is running in the 2015 Great Wheelbarrow Race raising money for the Rural Fire Brigade.

Road projects receive federal funding THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) received some good news last Thursday, with two road projects successfully receiving federal funding. Channel Road in Walkamin will receive a much needed upgrade, while a new truck pad in Tomoulin will also be installed.

Both projects have received $750,000 in funding, with the TRC matching each funding ‘dollar for dollar’ in order for both to be realised. The Channel Road project will involve 7.5m widening, seal realignment, upgrades to drainage, along with 1.75km section of road

for B-Double’s to have safer access between Hansen Road and the Kennedy Highway. Tumoulin’s track pad will be 100m by 40m in length. It will also have 260m of road realigned to allow for a more convenient and safer experience for freight users.

New relapse prevention group for the Tablelands A dedicated relapse prevention group will commence operation by the end of the month, to further support those battling addiction. Operated by Community Services Tablelands (CST) in Atherton, the group will convene six times over each quarter of the year. The sessions will be coordinated by CST community team member Anika Blackley, and will assist individuals who are currently seeking treatment for substance abuse or addiction. “For many types of disorders, particularly substance addiction, initial treatment is often effective at eliminating the unwanted behaviour,” she said. “However, this is rarely maintained without some type of prevention planning.” “People who change their behaviour, such as drug or alcohol abstinence, will eventually run into high-risk situations. “It could be a negative emotional state, conflict or social pressure to return to that behaviour. “Or it could even be a positive emotional state or the person’s decision to test his or her personal control.” Ms Blackley said that ‘lapses’ were a part of the long road to recovery and that the group was designed to open new opportunities and learn off each other. “It’s a great way to share stories

Helping hand from ‘Kangaroo Paw’ FAR North Queensland residents will have greater accessibility to various services and government payments during March. The Australian Government ‘Kangaroo Paw’ Mobile Service van will be covering the breadth of our region in March, with people able from Hopevale to Chillagoe (and in between) being able to have improved access to government payments, child support services, along with hearing checks. ‘Kangaroo Paw’ Manager Helen Volkers said the mobile service was designed to help curb some of the distance between remote areas and the difficulties in accessing particular services. “It’s a purpose-built service centre on wheels – equipped with the same technology as any Centrelink or Medicare Service Centre across the country,” she said. “On board we offer a wide range of information and services, tailored to meet the needs of each community. “The centre is staffed by experienced officers who are specialists in ru-

ral servicing and provide friendly faceto-face services. “Come along and visit us when we’re in town.” Some of the services that will be available with the service will include: confirming customer documents, noncash medicare transactions and registrations.Residents will be able to attend the service across several locations which include; Chillagoe Dimbulah (Wednesday, March 11, 9.30am-4pm, opposite Junction Hotel), Kuranda (Thurs, March 12, 9.30am-3.30pm, next to Visitor Information Centre), Cooktown (Fri, March 13, 9.30am to 4pm, opposite Cooktown Post Office), Hopevale (Mon, March 16, 9.30am to 4pm, Hopevale Coffee Shop), Lakeland (Tues, March 17, 9.30am to 2.30pm, near Lakeland Coffee Shop), Mt Carbine (Wed, March 18, 9.30am to 11.30am, next to Mt Carbine Caravan Park), Mt Molloy (Wed, March 18, 1pm to 4pm, near Vains Park) and Millaa Millaa (Thurs, March 19, 9.30am to 3pm, Lions Park).

Re-think for APA proposal

Re-think for APA proposal # 2

I write with regards to the article in The Express, February 25, 2015, entitled Car Park Expansion proposal for Atherton. I was appalled to read that representatives of Tableland Investments have put forward a proposal to council to demolish the 1942 Historic APA Igloo, and replace it with 100 additional car parks for the Silo Central Shopping Centre. The historic building currently houses the very active group of the Atherton Performing Arts, and is of World War 2 historic importance to the district and to the town of Atherton, let alone the rest of Australia. As a resident of the Tableland Shire, I support local development and shop locally, making use of this Shopping Centre frequently. But I have never had a problem finding a park even on the busy ‘pension’ days, so to alleviate the problem of some ‘older shoppers’ having to walk a long way, I am sure Tableland Investments would be able to create more short term parking spaces, that are a little closer, with the simple use of signage. The APA building is used by more than one community performing group, and has excellent acoustics and facilities for wonderful local productions. I implore Tableland Investments and TRC alike, to re-think this proposal and to have a little more regard for our history and current community use of this fine facility. Ros Walker, Herberton

We write with regards to the article in The Express, February 25, 2015, entitled Car Park Expansion proposal for Atherton. We (a singing group) were appalled to read that representatives of Tableland Investments have put forward a proposal to Council to demolish the 1942 Historic APA Igloo, and replace it with 100 additional car parks for the Silo Central Shopping Centre. The historic building currently houses the very active group of the Atherton Performing Arts, and is of World War 2 historic importance to the district and to the town of Atherton, let alone the rest of Australia. As a singing group we hire the hall regularly to practice our singing and find this building to have wonderful acoustics and facilities as well as being centrally located enabling easy access for our group. As Tableland residents, we support local development and shop locally, making use of this Shopping Centre frequently, however we are sure Tableland Investments would be able to create more short term parking spaces that are a little closer, with the simple use of signage. The APA building is widely used by community performing groups, and has excellent acoustics and facilities for wonderful local productions. We implore Tableland Investments and Council alike, to re-think this proposal and to have a little more regard for our history and current community use of this fine facility. The death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights. It is the pre-meditated cold-blooded killing of a human being by the state. Debate about wind turbines In response to the continuing debate about the value of wind turbines: Due to a small but very vocal minority anti- wind turbine activist group, it may seem to the general public that wind turbines are disastrous. According to the above body, they kill wildlife and severely affect the health of people. It is unfortunate that, apart from the company trying to help us by creating clean energy using the power of the wind, supporters of this project are relatively silent in the media. To check on the truth of the hype that the anti-wind turbine group is promoting, I did what anyone else can do and searched the internet for the latest research. Here is what I found: There are tens of thousands of wind turbines in use around the world. Research into their safety states that there is no reliable evidence that wind farms cause human health problems or a major impact on animals. Infrasound, which is inaudible to the human ear, is also produced by aircraft traffic, engines, or waves. Audible sounds are not usually heard beyond 500 meters. There is no megaphone effect. The illnesses being blamed on windfarms are more likely caused by the psychological effect of suggestions by the Anti-WF Activist groups. Annoyance and stress causes the symptoms. Researchers found that when people are paid generously, the symptoms become very minimal or disappear altogether. Birds are killed mostly by cats, building windows, power lines, hunting and traffic. Minimal birds die as a result of the monopole towers used to produce wind power. The suggestion is made to place microwave transmitters on the towers which will deter bats and birds. Wind turbines produce no carbon dioxide, radio-active waste or any other type of air pollution, unlike coal. The land around them can still be used for livestock. The value of the land increases due to the area becoming a tourist attraction . There is an approval process where the companies address how to minimise negative impacts. As far as the Mt.Emerald Wind Farm goes, the company in question has filled in massive amounts of paperwork and has held information sessions. I do not understand how certain narrow-minded people try to prevent such an environmentally friendly project which will benefit many homes by using clean energy. Wind turbines are being

erected across Australia, it is embarrassing for Queensland that we are not seen as progressive. The company has also promised local employment on a large and continuing scale. How can we say with a clear conscience that we don’t care about that opportunity? Ingrid Rose Mowbray, Ravenshoe

Exercise can improve health We are known for being a sporting country, but how many of us really live up to our rugged athletic reputation? We all know the old adage – ‘move it or lose it’. There’s more to it than most of us realise, with a proven link between lack of exercise and premature mortality. The good news is, just a brisk 20 minute walk each day could be the key to avoiding an early death. People who engage in moderate levels of daily exercise – equivalent to taking an energetic 20 minute walk – are 16 per cent to 30 per cent less likely to die than those who are inactive. You don’t need to train like a world-class triathlete, but daily physical activity is imperative for our overall physical and mental wellbeing, and a lack of it could be the difference between life and death. Exercise prevents disease. Physical activity regulates hormones such as insulin-like growth factor and oestrogen and affects the speed that food passes through the bowel, reducing contact with any potential carcinogens. It can help you maintain a healthy body weight and improve energy levels and feelings of wellbeing. As an active person, you’re less likely to develop cardiovascular disease, type two diabetes and osteoporosis, have a stroke or develop certain types of cancers – physical inactivity is linked to around 14 per cent of bowel cancers and about 11 per cent of postmenopausal breast cancer. Physical exercise is anything that gets your body moving. You don’t necessarily need to work up a sweat at the gym, it can be anything from hitting the dance floor to vacuuming the house. Just 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every day will deliver obvious health benefits, and 60 minutes can further reduce your risks of cancer and other chronic diseases. How will you know when you’re being active enough? If you can talk easily while you’re exercising, you are exercising at a light to moderate level. Once your breathing makes it too hard to talk, you know you’ve increased the intensity of your workout. Katie Clift, Cancer Council Queensland

Secured employment for indigenous job seekers SEVERAL indigenous job seekers have recently clocked six months of employment in the hospitality industry, after graduating from a pre-employment tertiary program. Coordinated by both Jobfind and the David Liddiard Group (DLG), this success is a testament to all involved. Both Jobfind and the DLG are committed to improving full-time employment within indigenous communities, along with fostering individual strengths. David Liddiard (founder of the DLG) said: “The myriad of issues that comprise the physical, financial and emotional barriers for many Aboriginal people seeking to enter the workforce needs a structured and consistent approach from Aborigi-

nal mentors,” he said. “People who are there to give advice; and implement practical solutions so that work can become the focus. “The real success of this program, in terms of retention, is definitely the result of the intensive pre-employment program and the 24/7 mentoring that assists each recruit to meet and overcome the challenges that prevent full attendance and engagement on a daily basis.” On the Tablelands, organisations such as RATEP play a major role in assisting local indigenous job seekers gain a career in education. Right: Successful graduates of the preemployment program and all are currently working at reputable hospitality venues.

Warren Thomson from Mareeba RSL (back right) with local support groups leaders from Mareeba.

Warren Thomson, General Manager of the Mareeba RSL Services Club, is seeking contributions from businesses and support groups in either sponsoring or donating to the newly formed Community Support Program (CSP). Contributions to this program will assist with the concept of a soup kitchen and delivery program, which will be operating throughout the local community. This venture is being organised with the objective of supporting the under privileged within the surrounding areas, with vital daily nutrition and support. “Many of these people fall between the support gaps and the aim of this program is to build a ‘catch

all’ safety net and support system.” Mr Thomson said. “We ask that you consider supporting such a venture within our community. Your assistance would be most welcome in any aspect of the Community Support Program that you deem appropriate. “This could be done through volunteering your time, providing equipment that will be utilised within the kitchen or a one off or perhaps a regular donation of produce that may be used to provide vital meals to those less fortunate within our surrounding area.” Monetary donations are also welcome and can be made through ‘Tablelands Online’: go to www.tablelandsonline.com.au and select the

‘Tablelands Helping Hands’ button and then make your contribution on the Mareeba RSL Community Support Program link. All funds raised will be used to purchase equipment to set up and run the kitchen and also to obtain a vehicle capable of delivering the meals to those unable to attend the soup kitchen each evening. The list of requirements will be continually evolving and will extend to include seasonal support hampers. For contributions or any queries and ideas that you would like to discuss, your involvement is welcome. You can contact the Mareeba RSL Services Club on 4092 1396.

I am very proud to be president of Dimbulah Bowls Club in 2015. The club has a committed committee and very enthusiastic members, both social and full. We have upgraded our kitchen, shed and electrical wiring, plus the club has done some painting to brightening things up. We have also improved the access to the front door to make it easier for our senior citizens, who hold a morning tea the last Monday of the month, run by Saint John’s and Blue Care. This year our Patron G. Gatto, is also the Atherton Tableland District patron. This is a great honour for the Dimbulah Bowls Club Inc. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our current and past sponsors, supporters and players who have helped to shape the Dimbulah Bowls Club into the warm, friendley and welcome club, I feel we are.

Bowls is one of the largest participation sports in Australia. People of all ages play various casual forms of the game. Barefoot bowls, social bowls, corporate bowls, party bowls and also competition. Bowls has some unique qualities: Easy to learn- a novice can pick up the basics in half an hour. Having mastered the basics, one can compete at a appropriate level and enjoy doing so for many, many years. People of all abilities and disabilities can play. People of all ages from 5 to 100 can enjoy playing and being around people to talk and have some company. People who have been outstanding athletes in other sports play with and against many who were never likely to be great athletes, but can bowl! People in wheelchairs, people with visual impairment, people with hearing disorders, and other intellectual or physical disabilities all can play the game alongside able-bodied bowlers with little or no modifications to the game. The Dimbulah Bowls Club Inc has one bowler in a wheelchair and one hearing impaired bowler with a hearing dog. As a club we try to cater for the whole community. The Bendigo Bank Mango is one of the best days the club hosted for the year. We have people from Cairns, Tully, also all tableland towns. BBQ Lunch. Our local farmers display their mangoes and other fruit they grow. All 64 players take home a box of mangoes and share in other fruits. DIMBULAH BOWLS CLUB

50 years of bowls in Dimbulah

The Dimbulah Bowls Club will celebrate their 50th anniversary this Saturday, March 14. The clubhouse was opened on March 21, 1965, with the first President, Mr Edgar Short. In those early pioneering times, socialising was one of the main activities the people of the Dimbulah district cherished. Even today, the club is run on a complete volunteer basis by members and their families, who generously give their time for the betterment of the establishment. Special mention must go to the ladies of the club, who are famous for their homemade pasta, keeping old traditions alive. Grandad’s’ Army keep the greens and facilities in pristine condition, while others have excellent skills around the BBQ. The oldest member of the club, Mr Andrea Inverardi, who was there when the club first opened, fondly remembers the family orientated atmos-

phere. “We were all new to farming and there were people from all over Europe; no one knew each other but we all got on very well”. “Everyone would bring their kids and socialise; they were wonderful times and when we played bowls the club was full of people. Dimbulah was a wonderful family town in those days.” Said Andrea. The club owes its success to the many members who have supported the club over the years. Situated approximately 15 minutes west of Dimbulah is 400 acres of arable farm land which is suitable for a variety of farming options. Dimbulah is renowned for its arable soils, permanent water supply and perfect growing conditions. The property has two titles covering an area of approximately 200 acres each and includes a water licence of 120 megalitres, structures and machinery. With good quality fencing and improved paddocks, this property is currently being utilised for grazing. All 8 paddocks are disced, seeded and fertilised. New cattle yards have been installed. There is one kilometre of new fencing and all fences are strained barbed wire. Improvements include a fully renovated four bedroom home with built-ins in all bedrooms. There is split system air-conditioning in two rooms, the roof is fully insulated and the house yard is fenced. A mango orchard of 880 Kensington Pride trees provides seasonal income. A Kubota 3540 tractor, slasher, 1000 litre blower and 500 litre spray tank service the orchard and are used for farm maintenance. A large parcel of land of this calibre is normally hard to find and this property lends itself to a number of different farming options depending on a new owner's vision. MAREEBA GLADIATORS 2015 SEASON A message from the President...

Building a ‘brothership’ in reserve grade IT truly is remarkable on where life’s journey can take you and Tonga Kose’s path to Mareeba is no different. After a choice (NZ slang for good) career as a utility forward in New Zealand, Kose followed one of his best mates to Australia and began a new life in Far North Queensland. Having played in a successful reserve grade premiership himself, Kose is now passing on his leadership and passion to a new generation of footballers. With a solid team of coaches working with him both at training and on gameday, all are committed to ‘building a brothership’ and achieving success together. You only have to watch training for a few minutes to get a true understanding for the respect that Kose has from his playing group. All eyes are watchfully on him as he delivers instructions clearly and accurately, never skipping a beat, despite English being his second language. Communication clearly will be a common theme in reserve grade this year, with coaches and players alike acutely aware of what is expected of them. With a solid working relationship with David Grainer and coaches around him, there is no reason why Kose’s men can’t deliver a ‘choice as’ season in 2015.

Tonga Kose (right) is offering excellent leadership to players in reserve grade.

The Mareeba Gladiators have been training since December 2014 under the direction of new club coach David Grainer. David is one of Mareeba's favorite sons and his return to the club has been well received by all players. Tonga Kose will again coach the A-Reserve team and a successful preseason hit out against Mossman has the side going into this year's competition with a lot of confidence. The club welcomes Alvin (Abby) Hobbler as the new Under 18's coach. Abby has attracted under 18 players from Kuranda to help bolster the existing Mareeba numbers and signs are good that Mareeba 18's will become a force in the CDRL. The club will do all in its power to support and encourage our young players as they are the future of the Gladiators. Anthony Ball and the mighty Malanda Eels are primed for another great season in the Second Division competition. The Gladiators are very pleased and honored that Malanda has chosen, once again, to be part of our club and we can't wait to see the players and their faithful supporters again at Davies Park.

The unsung heroes of the teams are the managers. They are integral to the side whether training, travelling or playing. We are very fortunate this year to have Mark, Herman, Les and Doc attempting to keep the coaches and players on the straight and narrow. Good luck with that. Keeping all the bodies together this season is our tireless First Aid Officer Des Pascoe. The club is extremely fortunate to have someone as qualified and passionate as Des looking after the players. There is a great feeling around the club at the moment and we are all eagerly awaiting the start of the season proper. If training, dedication and comradery are a guide for success then the Gladiators are in for wonderful season in 2015. Yours in Rugby League, Andrew Foster – President, Mareeba Rugby League Club

Keen to help the team IMPRESSIVE numbers have greeted new U/18 coach Abby Hobbler on the Davies Park training track ahead of a new beginning for the group. Last season was a turbulent one for U/18’s with playing numbers reduced to the point, where the team could no longer compete from week to week. However in Hobbler, they have a coach who is determined to help his players and keep the spirit of rugby league alive. A former prop, Hobbler played his junior league in Kuranda and later spent time playing in Mareeba as well. “I’m keen to help the kids and get them through the sea-

son,” he said. “I’ve got good assistants with me and I’m pretty relaxed on the sideline.” Several Kuranda United players have joined the club this season with Hobbler, which has seen players from both Mareeba and Kuranda build closer friendships. Hobbler said good defence was very important to him, along with ensuring his players complete their sets and hold the line against a surging opposition. But above all, he simply hopes that his players can grow on the field as well as off it. “I hope over the year our players can become better men on and off the field,” he said.

Bulls continue to reign supreme The Mareeba Bulls started the 2015 season the same way 2014 ended, with another dominant display, to retain the Mazda Cup in front of their home crowd. The Mazda Cup took on a new format this year, with organisers opting to run the carnival in one day; as opposed to a two day event in previous years. Match times were also reduced to 20 minute halves; meaning compact, continuous football all day; much to the delight of the spectators. These masterstrokes payed dividends as Borzi Park filled with teams and supporters from seven premier division and ladies clubs from across the

region. The home side needed to overcome surprise packets Leichhardt in the group stage, to secure top spot in their group. This was achieved with a tense 1-0 victory. They also accounted for the Marlin Coast Rangers and Innisfail, with two successive 2-1 victories. Leichhardt had a nerve racking time against Southside in the first of the semi finals, but managed to scrape home and secure a spot in the final, with a 1-0 win; where they would eventually face the winner of the EHUFC v MUFC match. The second semi was not as clear cut, as both

teams tormented each other in attack and defence. After forty minutes of normal time, the match ended 0-0 and went straight to penalties. With competition rules stating just three penalty kicks were allowed, both teams dispatched all six between them with precision. The unknown came into play as player after player stepped up to the spot in sudden death. Both goalkeepers played their part in saving two spot kicks each. When the ninth EHU player stepped up, MUFC shot stopper Julian Madrid made a fine save to send MUFC into the final. The physiological advantage of having beaten

Leichhardt in the group stage proved fruitful, as the Bulls put on a grandstand performance, to take out the trophy, with the highlight being a screamer from 35 meters by striker Anthony Mete. The match ended 2-0 to the Bulls and secured their first trophy of the new season. The Mareeba Lady Bulls also had a fine run in the tournament, making the semi final, where they went down 2-0 to Southside. The ladies final was played out between Southside and EHFC, with Edge Hill winning 4-3 in another thrilling penalty shoot-out.

Travelling Bandits strike again

Callan Sayers is excited about his upcoming season.

By Justin Fris

EXCITING motor racing prospect Callan Sayers is preparing for a season unlike any other in his motorsport career. Taking part in the 2015 Australian Manufactures Championship, (endurance based racing) Sayers will team up with co-driver, Wade Scott. Sayers will compete in five races over the year, which are spread out, due to the extreme endurance required to complete them. “Some of the races will range from three to four hours,” he said. “Others will purely be a 200km sprint. During the longer events, we will have regular pit stops for fuel, along with driver changes.” In many ways, his addition to the series will not be a major transition, with the level of competition and overall type of car only slightly different in production. Sayers has come off two impressive years competing in the Australian Swift Racing Series. Despite

his opportunity to compete in the V8 supercar circuit falling through, he has been hitting the books and simulator harder than ever. Both Scott and Sayers study mechanical engineering at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. A healthy bond has already been developed between the pair, who will hope to have sustained success across the season. “I’m still completing roughly the same amount of time on the simulator,” he said. “Right now, the focus is shifting to Sandown; and I’m using the simulator to get a good feel of the track and how the car will handle certain corners. “But above all, my main priority is finishing my final semester of mechanical engineering here at QUT in Brisbane. “I’ve had excellent support from my family and my mentor Michael; and as things stand, I’m potentially graduating with honours.”

THE Mareeba Bandits continued their recent away success, trouncing Rovers by seven wickets last Sunday. After winning the toss and sending the hosts into bat, Rovers simply did not have the tactical nous at the crease. Brett Brewer proved the difference in the contest, with an exceptional 3/6 off his six over spell, which included two maidens. Robert Taylor (2/27), Rowan Foxwell (2/24) and Chris Adams (2/11) also made valued contributions, which saw the home

side bundled over for 126 all-out, off 29.2 overs. With incentive of securing a top four berth, the Bandits stuttered initially, with Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams and Brendan Payne falling early. Luke Lamborn and Robert Taylor eased all fears of a collapse, putting on a solid stand and ensuring the visitors could drive back to Mareeba with the points. Lamborn remained not-out on 49 (off 75 balls), while Taylor made an effective 47 off 65. The visitors reached the target of 127, with three overs to spare. Semi finals will commence this Sunday.

Gators jersey auction success

The Tablelands Eels prepare for another defensive set of six late in the match.

Mareeba fends off Tablelands Eels By Justin Fris

MAREEBA’S rugby league faithful and sponsors gathered at the Mareeba Leagues Club last Friday night for the annual jersey auction. Sporting bold new jerseys, the entire ‘Gators first grade squad made their way onto the stage, in a bid to raise much needed funds for the club. In total, 17 jerseys were put up for auction during the evening, grossing $12,850.The top price of the evening went by the way of jersey number 9, which the Mareeba RSL successfully bid $1,100 for. Successful bids will have their business name splashed across the upper back of the jersey, only centimetres above from the playing number. It took a while for the auction to heat up, with $500 set as an initial reserve price. Once a few bidders started flexing their muscles, the fun truly began.

Former Gladiators President John Arcidiacono bought two jerseys on the night, on behalf of his Aquafix pool business. Coach David Grainer’s jersey fetched $600, with the born and bred Mareeba local acknowledging the outstanding support he had received from the local league community. Shana Aue was his usual jovial self and a big hit with the crowd. The Mareeba Leagues Club eventually bought his jersey for $1,000, which was the 2nd highest price of the night. Newly appointed captain Jack Pedersen (now in his ninth season) was also a hit with the locals, with RTM Bus Services claiming his jersey for $950. The team then posed for a photo once the festivities had concluded, firmly aware of their desire to perform the following night in the derby against the Atherton Roosters.

By Justin Fris

MAREEBA fought off a spirited Tablelands Eels side 24-16 in their female rugby league development matchup last Saturday night. The future of female rugby league was the overall winner on the night, with both sides showing the crowd the full wealth of their talents. Mareeba’s dominance in the match appeared limitless, leading 24-8 with under 20 minutes left on the clock. Claudette East was best afield for the home side, who were also well represented by Shanley Banjo and Rachael Bricko. With time ticking away and not content on waiting for a hero to turn the tables, Eels fullback Annette Pearson unleashed her inner jetpack.

Pearson’s leg speed was the signature of the visitor’s remarkable fightback. Trailing in almost every facet of the game, the Eels finally sensed they could sniff victory, off the back of Pearson’s leadership and skill. Some loose checking from the Mareeba defence saw Eels winger MJ Waia break through the line and slice the lead, with only four minutes left. Fingernails were then bitten even further by Mareeba locals in the crowd, with Pearson crossing over to put victory within sight. However some conservative sets of the six from the home side ensured they would maintain their slender lead, but they were pushed every step of the way by the plucky visitors.

Gladiators humiliate Roosters in derby trial By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba Gladiators completed the finishing touches of their pre-season campaign, belting bitter rival Atherton 50-0 last Saturday night at Davies Park. Plagued by injuries, the youthful Roosters were dwarfed by their opponents in both size and ball security from the outset. ‘Gators hooker Darren Mitchell cut a fearsome figure in the ruck, ripping off sizeable chunks of territory; and making tackles stick when it was his turn to defend. The home side raced to a 10-0 lead after only seven minutes, with tries to William Dodd and Frank Koroi. In the first 15 minutes off the match, the Roosters had possession for a total of 27 seconds; and in that time, knocked on twice. Desperate for some ball near the Gladiators line, Roosters winger Craig Gregory stood up to be counted; and tried to inspire his side. Alas for Gregory, he had little support, with the imposing Gladiators forward pack doing as they pleased down the middle. By the hour mark, and trailing 34-0, the visitors had their best period of the match. There was less bunching around the play the ball; and they tried to

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

move it along the flanks. Chronic handling errors continually unravelled the endeavour displayed by the Roosters in the final third of the match, and it appeared to sap their revival. Sensing their chance, Gladiators duo Tom Hughes and Shana Aue decided to rub further salt into the gaping Rooster wounds, scoring and setting up several additional tries. Once the final siren sounded, Mareeba locals burst out into passionate voice. It may have only been a trial, but clearly a derby win made their weekend. A sour point of the night for Gladiators supporters came early in the first half, where Jack Pedersen was helped off the field by the trainers. Pedersen had a slight limp and was holding his right knee for brief periods, but was able to walk off relatively able. For the Gladiators, they will begin their CDRL campaign this Saturday night against Innisfail at Davies Park. Portions of the performance were really encouraging for David Grainer’s side, although the challenge they face this week will be significantly tougher. It is easy to sometimes throw the baby out with the bathwater with trial results, but Roosters officials would have been concerned with a distinct lack of competitiveness for lengthy periods. They will face Southern Suburbs on Saturday night in Atherton.

A determined competitor nears the final 100m of her race. By Justin Fris

INCLUSION was the overriding theme of the Mareeba Rotary Inclusive Aquathlon, held last Sunday at the Mareeba Swimming Pool. Adults and children from all ages and abilities took part in a series of events, which were held in a friendly, untimed format. Overall, 70 people took part in the morning, which began bright and early at 8am. The disability catagories were also solidly represented; with enthusiasm and

application to the races at a premium. The adult sprint was the first major event on the card, with competitors required to swim 200m and run 1.5km. Tim Jack was victorious in the sprint race, while Alex Phillips was triumphant in the ‘Adult Entice’ event, which was a 50m swim, followed by a 600m run. Adam Howarth placed 1st in the Disibility Adult Sprint, where he, along with other dedicated athletes, swam 400m and travelled 5km by land. All athletes appeared to enjoy themselves and celebrated after all races had concluded.
