Neighbouring land owner fights wind farm approval

Uncertainty surrounds the future of the Lakeland Wind Farm after a neighbouring property owner has uncovered discrepancies in the project’s approval report.

Joy Marriott owns a 5000ha property at Lakeland that the wind farm will border. She received Cook Shire Council approval last September for a house to be built on her land and is due to begin construction shortly, despite the fact it will sit just 600m from the wind turbines.

“There is a legal impediment to the project going ahead,” she said.

“If they want to build the turbines within 1.5km from my house site, they

need to get a deed of release from me which they haven’t got.”

The $200 million wind farm was given State Government approval in February. The project will include up to 30 wind turbines as well as electrical infrastructure and will produce around 100 megawatts of power for North Queensland, connected via the national electricity grid.

Ms Marriott claims the map used for the approval pinpoints her house in the wrong location, placing it further away from the turbines than it is.

“The map in the approval is wrong, so the assessment is wrong,” she said.

“Within the next couple of weeks we’re going to be starting construction and they’re going to realise

how close my house is to the boundary and the turbines.”

Ms Marriott sought legal advice and contacted both Windlab and the State and Federal government over the matter. She believes the approval of the project was politically motivated.

“I don’t know what they’re doing, but this is a misrepresentation,” she said.

“They made a media announcement saying they were dropping five (turbines) to incorporate my development but in their Federal application they still have 35 – so what’s going to happen if they get approval for 35?”

Ms Marriott is due to open her caravan park for business in the next few

weeks. She is concerned that the wind farm will impact her business and her lifestyle and has been against the development from the outset.

“It’s not that I’m against wind farms but this is right on top of me, why can’t they move them?” she said.

“We’re out in the middle of nowhere.”

Ms Marriott said she had been contacted multiple times by Achim Hoehne, the General Manager of Windlab Australia about signing a contract that ensured she would withdraw her property application in return for money. His most recent communication was on March 29, two months after the project received State Government approval.

“I paid $20,000 for this

building approval and we had planned to build there for years,” said Ms Marriott. “It doesn’t matter what we say, they don’t care and we’re not going to stop them, but the legal impediment is a problem and they know it. I’m going to start building there and yet they’ve got all these towers they’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars on and they’ve got to decommission them? It won’t make any money, so why build it there?”

Mr Hoehne was unavailable to comment directly on Ms Marriott’s case, but a spokesperson did issue a statement from him claiming the wind farm is on track to begin construction before the end of the year.

“We are pleased with the high level of commu-

nity support the project enjoys,” he said. “However we also understand there are some differing views and we remain open and active in communicating with interested parties.”

The statement said Mr Hoehne worked closely with the department and the local community to optimise the project design to accommodate the property development plans of a project neighbour.

“As a consequence the number of turbine locations was reduced to 30 from 35 whilst ensuring the project remained viable and competitive,” said the statement. “The department issued the Development Approval for the Lakeland Wind Farm confirming compliance with planning requirements.”

Survivors faces of the Relay for Life

Cancer survivors Chris and Sharyn Banville have been named as this year’s Faces of the Race for the Tablelands Relay for Life.

The annual fundraiser was officially launched by volunteers on Saturday at Mareeba Markets where the Banville’s said they were ‘honoured’ to have been chosen to be front and centre in the fundraising drive this year.

“We both had cancer,” said Sharyn. “I heard about the Cancer Council in Cairns and started the Mareeba branch. From there we did Relay for Life and launched the Tableland Relay 10 years ago.”

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce is getting behind Mayor Tom Gilmore’s bid to entice Qantas to bring its pilot training academy to the Tablelands.

Chamber president Joe Moro backed up the Mayor’s comments about Mareeba being the ideal spot for the $20million facility that is due to open next year. Mr Moro said the benefits for the region would be far reaching.

“From an economic point of view it will create a lot of jobs and I think the council’s goal of further improving the airport overall will see lots more jobs generated from the aero side of the industry,” he said. “The benefit of that is more houses, more people living in the area, more pay packets which will be good for the economy, good for the region and help us argue and fight for lots of other services including health.”

Mr Moro said he heard that Qantas CEO Alan Joyce was ideally looking

for somewhere in regional Australia with a largely sunny climate.

“We want to let Alan Joyce know that we have the 300 sunny days that he’s looking for,” he said.

“He made a comment that his preferred site has to have 300 sunny days and Mareeba does. We have the signs to prove it.”

Qantas announced in February that it was looking for a spot to set up a new training facility that would train up to 500 pilots a year.

Mr Moro said the Chamber would be approaching Mr Joyce asking him to consider Mareeba for the academy.

“We’re going to forward on this information directly to him, but we’re really here to support the Council and the Mayor’s drive to get that facility here and people like Warren Entsch who have worked very hard to get the current funding that we’ve got,” he said. “This is just highlighting the importance of this piece of infrastructure not just for Mareeba but for the Tablelands.”

FGF Developments win Mareeba airport tender MAREEBA Shire Council is soaring closer to completing the region’s most anticipated aviation facility, with the next two stages of the Mareeba Airport Upgrade Project set to take off.

Council recently awarded a contract for the construction of airside infrastructure to local company FGF Developments Pty Ltd. Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore said the $14 million contract consists of the extension of the aviation commercial precinct (Stage 1) and airside works (Stage 2).

“The award of this tender is without a doubt the most significant milestone to date in the reconstruction of this World War II airstrip. The project is anticipated to support the transformation of the Mareeba Airport into a major pilot

training and aircraft maintenance facility - probably the most important facility of its kind in northern Australia,” Cr Gilmore said.

The Mareeba Airport Upgrade Project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($5 million) and the Queensland Government ($13 million) and is being delivered by Mareeba Shire Council.

“This redevelopment is a result of generous contributions from the Australian Government and Queensland Government without which the redevelopment would not and could not have ever proceeded,” Cr Gilmore said.

“On behalf of the community, I offer my sincere thanks to both governments for their input and their cooperation as we move towards the award of this tender.”

Northern-based Federal

Government Senator Ian Macdonald said the work is an important milestone.

“This initiative will give the Mareeba Airport a new lease of life and ensure future pilots in North and Far North Queensland have access to new and improved training facilities.”

The key project deliverables include a 52-lot aviation commercial precinct, resurfacing the existing runway, upgrade to airfield lighting, construction of new taxiways and upgrades to surrounding roads, drainage, lighting and airport fencing.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the Queensland Government was proud to be working with Mareeba Shire Council on an important project set to deliver enduring regional benefits driving economic development, jobs growth and benefits for Far North

Queenslanders.

“This project is building on the region’s existing strengths in aviation and will help position Mareeba as an important provider of aviation services, pilot training and maintenance in Far North Queensland,” she said.

“Awarding this tender marks an important milestone in the delivery of this project and I look forward to seeing the economic benefits for Mareeba realised once it’s completed.”

Cr Gilmore said Council is looking forward to working with FGF Developments. “The successful tenderer, which is of course a local firm and is well understood to be capable of the scope of works required to be undertaken. We are proud to partner with FGF and congratulate the company on the successful outcome,” he said.

Company Director Blue Williams said FGF was excited to be part of such an important project. “We are looking forward to working with the Mareeba Shire Council on this multi-million-dollar upgrade which will see further job creation and investment opportunities in regional areas such as Mareeba,” Mr Williams said.

Cr Gilmore said the project had been a long-term dream of Council to have this relic of the war turned into a nursery for job creation for the community. “It is fair to say that we are unlikely to see a development of this magnitude again in Far North Queensland,” he said.

“The process leading to the awarding of this tender has been long and complex, and I thank the Mareeba Shire Council staff and those departmental staff.

Fighting tree clearing laws

State member for Hill Shane Knuth said land clearing laws that were the subject of a public hearing last Friday in Cairns, were “draconian” and likely to have a “battering economic effect” on the Tablelands.

Mr Knuth sat on the committee hearing that the State Development, Natural Resources and Agricultural Industries Development Committee conducted into the Vegetation Management Amendment Bill. He said he had been fighting these laws since 2000 and would not stop.

“I am very gutted by the fact that this is all about politics and votes and have no compassion or sympathy for the operation or livelihood of farmers and indigenous communities,” he said.

“The general feeling is re-growth continually grows back and to have a successful operation you’ve got to clear that so you can farm productively.

“We’re hoping that members of the Labor party acknowledge that this is draconian and it is an attack on rural communities and I’ll be continuing to

fight the issue and hopefully we can knock it on the head.”

The proposed reforms were an election promise of the Palaszczuk Government and were introduced to parliament last month

by Natural Resources Minister, Dr Anthony Lynham.

Some aspects of the laws are already in effect.

Among the proposed changes are broad-scale bans on clearing remnant vegetation for agriculture, requirements for farmers to obtain approval to thin vegetation and expansion of high value regrowth areas.

Alongside the hearing, a protest rally was held by AgForce outside Cairns MP Craig Crawford’s office.

President of the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association Joe Moro spoke at the hearing and said Tableland growers were very concerned.

“A lot of growers feel very strongly about it,” he said. “It depends on the grower how impacted they are but from our point of view, the development that has occurred up here is a success story from when we were a tobacco grow-

ing area to a very broad horticultural growing area.

There’s been a lot of growth and we’d like to see that continue.

“If these land clearing laws come in, they will really put a halt to a lot of options for economic development from an agricultural point of view.”

Mr Moro said the new

laws would also mean that future plans to expand irrigation options for Tableland growers may suffer.

“If we’re going to see further development with water infrastructure there has to be some land clearing on properties to allow that to happen,” he said.

Mr Moro went on to say that he thinks some farmers should be compensated if the law is passed.

“The land issues thinning requirements that graziers have had has an impact on our economy as well,” he said.

“Cattle that comes

from a lot of those properties come through our sale yards, they spend a lot of their money locally, so this is really going to be a shutting up of a lot of land and we’re asking if we’re going to be forced to go down that road – those farmers that are going to be land locked up should be compensated.”

Cairns was one of five regional centres to hold a hearing into the bill along with Townsville, Cloncurry, Rockhampton, Longreach and Charleville.

Labor says the policy will reduce land degradation, protect water quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sustain biodiversity.

Opening doors to young Timorese

Emilia Moreira Moniz from Timor-Leste is working with Mareeba Rotarian Ida Portella at her business – Ida Portella Business and Travel Services.

A pilot program is giving 21-year-old Emilia Moreira Moniz a taste of life on the Tablelands and skills and experiences that she will take home with her to East Timor next month.

The marketing and tourism officer is spending eight weeks in the region as part of a Rotary scheme called the New Generations Service Exchange.

Rotary District 9550 is one of the largest Rotary districts in Australia, covering an area of 1.2 million square kilometres across most of the Northern Territory, northern Queensland and Timor-Leste.

Rotary clubs in Cairns, Mareeba and Townsville

are hosting young professionals from the country as part of a unique cross-cultural professional development program launched in the region for the first time.

Emilia is one of four Timorese who are sampling life in the Far North and living with local families.

She is also working with Ida Portella in her travel and tourism business based in Mareeba.

“Australia is a developed country and we are a very new country and there are a lot of things we need to learn to apply in our country,” she said.

“It’s great for Timorese youth to learn some skills to apply to contribute to the development of Timor.”

East Timor, or TimorLeste is the youngest coun-

try in the world after gaining independence in 2002.

It still does not have a currency and poverty is rife.

“I’ve learnt so much from Emilia as well from a cultural perspective and sharing her experiences,” said Ms Portella.

“For me it’s a feel good thing, I feel good knowing that we’ve assisted in helping a young professional giving them an opportunity.

“I am so happy and feel so lucky to have this opportunity.”

A social worker and two mechanics make up the cohort visiting the region.

Ms Portella said the opportunity for the young Timorese to experience life here could be potentially life-changing.

“I’d love to meet Emilia

in five years and see how this has changed her, because a lot of the Rotary exchange students in Dili are now ministers for the government,” she said.

“It is a very successful program and has been lifechanging for them.”

For Emilia, it has also been an opportunity to promote the beauty of her country.

“We have a wonderful place to visit,” she said.

“We have incredible beaches. We have mountains and we have a lot of historical places. Hiking is popular and it is one of the best spots for diving.”

New Generations Service Exchange Program chair Sue Wilson said the new generation pilot program was designed to have

a specific focus on TimorLeste, however, it was hoped future exchanges could be established with other countries.

“During their stay, the participants will make connections with serviceminded community business leaders, improve their English, build their professional skills, experience our region and explore a new culture while giving back through service,” Mrs Wilson said.

“The most important thing is what happens when they return to their communities and impart their newfound knowledge. They will return to this young, developing nation to teach new colleagues new processes and ideas.”

An initiative of the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) and Northern Gulf Resource Management Group, the event is happening on Friday 27 April.

The keynote speaker line-up is impressive and, as MDFVGA president Joe Moro explains, aims to tackle the crucial issues facing the modern-day farmer.

“Energy efficiency would be, without a doubt, one of the biggest challenges we face on the land,” Mr Moro said. “Soaring elec-

tricity prices have placed enormous pressure on our ability to run our businesses and anything we can do to reduce this impact, is welcomed by farmers.

Barron Catchment Care (BCC) has appointed a new Coordinator. Brian Down the Chair of BCC said that Rod Marti had taken over the reins from Ian Sinclair.

“Rod brings a good mix of skills and experience, from his roles in local government, farming and agribusiness, management and various community-based organisations,” he said.

“In his role as a farmer, he has made improvements to his farm around best practice and sustainability over many years so he also has skin in the game.”

Short film festival in Malanda

Countdown is on for Wheelbarrow Race The CrossFit HBZ 4880 Hillbillies Great Wheelbarrow Race team fronted by Head Coach Red will be tackling the gruelling three day event next month.

WITH only one month to go, competitors have been training hard for this year’s Great Wheelbarrow Race.

Combining their love of fitness with funding, the team at CrossFit HBZ 4880 Mareeba are looking forward to the event.

Head Coach Simon ‘Red’ Cockrem said it’s

the first time the group has entered the race and are excited to be part of such a unique event.

“We are keen to get involved in the community and it’s such a great event to be part of,” Simon said.

The three-day endurance event will see over 500 competitors push a wheelbarrow

140km from Chillagoe to Mareeba, all in the name of fun and fundraising. CrossFit Team member Nadine Mitchell said the group has been fundraising for a local family who sadly lost their wife and mother to ovarian cancer earlier this year.

“We are really passionate about raising money

for a local lady who sadly passed away, Charlene Ericson,” Nadine said.

“The community has really rallied behind us and it has been truly amazing. All the money raised will go to her family,” she said.

The annual charity event will begin on May 18 in Chillagoe and finish on the

Sunday at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds.

Race Chair Councillor Nipper Brown said locals are encouraged come and welcome home the competitors as they run into Mareeba Rodeo grounds on the Sunday.

“Teams will start arriving mid-morning and it

would be fantastic to see as many people there as possible cheering teams on as they cross the finish line after a gruelling three days,” Cr Nipper Brown said.

HARPS concerns raised at workshop

Food producers from across the Tablelands took part in a workshop in Mareeba last week to try and gain some clarity over the Harmonised Australian Retailer Produce Scheme (HARPS).

Local growers have been sceptical about the scheme which will allow direct suppliers to the five Australian chain retailers to use one of the recognised global food safety standards plus harmonised additional requirements to supply all retailers. The aim is to eliminate multiple audits for multiple customers. The aim of the workshop held on Wednesday at the Mareeba Leagues Club was to listen to growers’ feedback. But after the recent listeria outbreak at a rockmelon property down south, Tableland growers are concerned that the scheme will be a waste of time considering that property was already running

under HARPS. “It’s not giving us a lot of confidence,” said one participant.

HARPS consultant Tristan Kitchener said the outbreak was a timely reminder to have a more uniformed approach to regulation.

“A sixth person has now died eating rockmelon with listeria,” he said.

“That business has been devastated by this issue and it’s had a massive impact on everybody. I’d like to think HARPS is going to address the possible impact of a recall. We can’t keep on having the same level of risk. This is the retailer saying, what can we do to bring about change.”

The scheme covers legal and trade compliance, as well as food safety, but the biggest concern is the cost and time that would be spent adhering to new regulations.

“There has been very little industry consultation,” said one participant.“Six years you’ve been working

on this and you’re not there yet but we have deadlines and real costs that we’re going to continue enduring while you’re working it out.”

The aim of HARPS is to eliminate multiple audits and further develop food safety auditor competency.

Previously each retailer had their own requirements which meant multiple requirements and audits for all growers.

“It’s not a magic wand to think that all your issues are going away with this,” said HARPS consultant Belinda Millard. “It is a mechanism. We’ve got all these retailers wanting different things and this will cut down the duplication.

There are many things we need to get right but we have seen some progress.

The benefits will be for everyone at the end of the day.”

The scheme was launched last year and farmers are required to implement it by January 1, 2019.

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC), in partnership with TRC Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee will be hosting two free Access All Areas Film Festival (AAAFF) screenings starting this weekend.

“This is the first time our region has hosted this film festival,” said Mayor Joe Paronella. “The international program of award-winning short films has a range of features including open captions, relaxed screening and is flashing light free.”

Malanda Majestic Theatre is accessible to people with mobility disability and has a chill out room.

The children’s program will screen at 3.45pm on 20 April and feature ten exceptional films from around the world including animation, documentary and live action.

The main program, at 10.30am on 28 April, has seven exceptional films that will take audiences on a journey of suspense, intrigue, romance, comedy, heart-warming moments and new perspectives.

Many of the films share the stories of people living with a disability.

“This is a great opportunity for people of all abilities to come together for a positive, shared experience,” said Cr Paronella.

The AAAFF program is in its tenth year and is screening across six states and territories. The 2017/18 program is anticipated to reach an audience of 35,000 people.

Did CEO deserve such high praise?

Hurryiet Babacan, CEO at Tablelands Regional Council was given a glowing endorsement by another Tableland paper.

The editorial in another Tablelands paper on Tuesday March 27, 2018 left as many unanswered questions that it laid to rest concerning the soon-to-depart CEO of the Tablelands Regional Council.

‘A Legacy which will endure’ is a rehash of the past positions and performance of Ms Babacan. It is written in a style which seems to be a past tense

version of what would have announced the CEO’s arrival and what she had hoped to achieve – then fast forward 16 months, change the tense to past and publish it as the departure gift.

It doesn’t say anything analytical.

The various articles and opinions contained in the paper paint a glowing picture of the work of the CEO in the 16 months she held the position and conveys the strong impression that the TRC is on the cusp of

a great leap forward to the future with the strategic directions charted by the CEO. The ‘signature strategies’ were necessary as the result of ‘the many organisational legacy issues due to the amalgamation/ demalgamation’. This required ‘fundamental foundational work’.

Let’s think hard about that and the CEO’s outgoing statements and apply the well known and respected ‘pub test’ to what we, the community, think

about the TRC and the last 16 months.

Firstly, the CEO and Council conducted a ‘clean out’ of almost all the Senior positions of TRC under the guise of a re-organization.

In recent times the position of Chief Financial Officer was cleared out with the inference that the recent rates fiasco was that officer’s fault. It follows that these people must have been the problem; they were the staff who somehow messed up the future of the

TRC and thus they had to go. Probably at a cost to the community of about $1,000,000 in redundancies and recruitment. The community know or knew those people, the past senior staff, and the pub test is whether they were as bad as portrayed or whether they were scapegoats. It certainly cost a significant sum of money to get rid of this ‘organisational legacy’; equally the Council lost experienced people so there has been an extended learning curve for the new staff which has adversely reflected on efficiency and outcomes.

Secondly, after all the bloodletting was finished the total staff at TRC actually increased and remains higher and more expensive than both before the CEO arrived and higher than Mareeba which has a greater area to service, more roads and a greater population. What does the ‘pub’ test suggest here?

Thirdly, the 2017 budget and the only one prepared under the Ms Babacan was, to many ratepayers, a disaster and had certain elements of it reversed or altered after significant objection by angry community members. To make the situation worse the Chief Financial Officer of TRC ‘resigned’ with the clear inference that person was the culprit for the budget errors. No leaders copping the blame here! What does the ‘pub’ test suggest to readers?

If I were the Editor of a local-based newspaper like the one in Atherton, I’d feel a significant responsibility to provide proper analyses to my readers.

‘Under her leadership, we achieved many great outcomes in a short period of time’. Well Mr Mayor give us the details of these ‘great outcomes’ so that we may attempt to give the last 16 months of the TRC some degree of balance.

Only the test of time will provide confirmation to the

statement that Ms Babacan has left ‘A Legacy which will endure’. Most of us believe that it’s just spin.

Technology is the key for cars Once again our news headlines are dominated by the ever-increasing incidents of car theft, most often now from the owner’s home or garage.

I have been led to believe that the engines of all recently manufactured cars are controlled by a small computer under the bonnet. Chips in this computer control most aspects of the car’s operation. Including the ignition.

Why doesn’t the government mandate that all new cars entering this country must be equipped with a chip that responds to an individual, unique password that allows the owner to disable the car’s ignition by simply sending a signal to it by mobile phone?

This simple system would work as well as what we used to do in the old days – take the rotor button out of the distributor.

Atherton celebrates a stellar year of cricket

Presentations for the Atherton Senior Cricket Club were held on Sunday night at the Barron Valley Hotel which capped off the club’s most successful season in their thirty year history.

The newly crowned premiers won all three titles on offer in the Cricket Far North first grade competition, winning the T20, one day and two day championships.

Opening batsman and Queensland Country representative Gerard Fox was named Atherton’s Player of the Year while the Colt of the Year award went to Paul Nasser.

Top points in the A grade went to Owen Jonsson on 54 followed by Kirk Poole 47 and David Shade 38. Cameron O’Flynn was first in B grade on 52 points followed by Darryl Cooper 40 and Dale McFarlane 26.

Nathan Hewitt won C grade with 49 points ahead of Mitchel White 48 and Shae Jonsson 46.

Next race meeting at Tepon is set down for Sunday, May 20.

Gladiators defeated

Mareeba Gladiators didn’t win against at the Mossman Sharks on the weekend but coach Matt Wakefield was pleased with their performance.

“We played a lot better at the weekend than we had previously,” he said.

“We just dropped the ball one too many times.

Our structure was a lot better, just a couple lapses let us down.”

Despite losing 34-22 Wakefield said there was a lot of positives to be taken from the game.

“We had a game plan going in,” he said. “We tried to play our edges better and we did that, there were just a few too many mistakes made.”

Wakefield is himself battling an injury that kept him off the field on Saturday and is struggling with a young, new team after losing ten players at the end of last year’s season.

Spirits were lifted, however, with the signing

of Luke Badge early last week – a Mareeba boy and ex-Gladiators player who has returned to his home town just in time for the start of the footy season.

“We signed him from Brothers and he’s a great player,” said Wakefield.

“He played really well on Saturday night considering he hasn’t trained all season. He’s a massive asset for us.”

Other stand out players from the night were Ben Cocciolone and Dan Moevao.

This weekend the Gators are back on home ground at Davies Park against Tully which coach Wakefield says will be a challenge but he’s quietly confident.

“It will be a tough challenge because they’re a strong team, but I’m confident in the boys we’ve got,” he said.

“We’ve just got to hold the ball. Our completion rate’s got to be higher.”

The Gladiators will play the Tully Tigers Saturday night in Mareeba.

Malanda Bowls results Sunday April 15 saw a beautiful afternoon with a game of triples played with the winners after a countback being the team of Maddy Balas, Lois O’Brien and Craig Riddell.

Roller skaters unite for Atherton derby

Roller Derby has made a huge come-back internationally and locally in the last five years and on Saturday the Tableland Roller Derby League (TDRL) joined forces with friends from Ipswich to host a fast and furious night of competition.

The event was a friendly reunion between the two teams that have formed a bond over a struggling lack of players.

“Regional roller derby

has always been a bit of a struggle because the population is so transient, so people come and then they move,” said TDRL secretary Ashleigh Grigg.

“We entered a couple of tournaments where we didn’t have enough players so we subbed in for them and then they subbed in for us. We’re sort of one big team.”

Ashleigh Grigg from TDRL said everyone is accepted in roller derby and said the league would love to introduce new members.

“It’s not a male dominated sport,” she said.

“Everyone is accepted.

Roller derby is one of the only sports I can think of where it doesn’t matter what gender you are, it doesn’t matter how fit you are, what size you are, what age you are.”

Saturday’s competition was the first held locally in two and half years. The league would love to get more competitive in the future.

“It’s amazing, it’s fun, it’s fitness,” said Ashleigh.

“Roller derby generally doesn’t take itself too seriously. People up here tonight aren’t here for gold medals, we’re here to have fun.”

Roller derby is all about speed and point scoring.

“From each team there will be five skaters on the track at a time,” said Ashleigh.

“Four of them are called blockers and one is called a jammer. The jammer is the points scorer. The first lap is a test to see who gets there the fastest then they

get awarded lead jammer status which gives them more power in the whole scheme of things. Then the jammer gets a point for every member of the opposite team that they pass.”

The league trains twice a week – in Atherton at the state high school’s sports hall on Sundays at 3pm and in Mareeba on Wednesdays at the Mareeba State School’s hall at 6.30pm.

Controversial sin bins in Roosters loss

The loss of two players to the sin bin in the shadows of half time has proven costly for the Atherton Roosters in their Cairns District Rugby League premiership match with Brothers at Williams Park on Sunday.

In the end Brothers took the match 38-14 over the Roosters who obviously struggled with the controversial sin binnings.

With the Roosters down to eleven troops, Brothers took full advantage and quickly posted two tries

to head the contest 20-4 at the 45th minute. To their credit, the Roosters did come up with a further two tries through James Coyle and Willem Foster but this wasn’t enough to save the points from the earlier damage.

On a brighter note, the Roosters colts side have made it two from two after winning 24-22 over Brothers on Sunday. Young winger Thomas Nelson crossed for two tries while Connor Griffin, Norman Butler and Connor Hamil-

ton scored one each.

Brothers won the reserve grade 38-18 over the Roosters who had led midway through the second stanza.

This Sunday the Atherton Roosters play the Seahawks at Yarrabah.

Tennis Club open day with new coach

Mareeba Tennis Club is home to a brand new coach who was unveiled to members and new comers on the weekend at an open day.

Herold Prins from Mossman has been a coach for 25 years.

Well know and highly recommended, Mr Prins will be in town teaching at the club on Wednesdays and Thursdays and will be bringing with him a bag of tricks to engage both the young and old.

“We’ll be doing cardio tennis which is more fitness to music, warming up,” he said.

“It has a drill-based and a game-based part.”

Mr Prins, originally from the Netherlands, says tennis is a great sport for the whole family.

“The good thing about tennis is that you don’t need a whole team, you can actually play just one person against a wall,” he said.

“If you’re 70 or 80

years old you can still play tennis. Anyone can play.

Tennis is also not physically demanding on the body.”

With over two decades of experience as a coach and more as a professional player, Mr Prins said there is also a surprising benefit to playing the game.

“A lot of tennis players are leaders because they make short decisions in a short time – quick decisions on the spot,” he said.

Mr Prins, who doubles as a marine biologist, gets young kids involved in the game by incorporating stories.

“I do a special thing with pre-school kids,” he said.

“We get them into a fantasy world. We pick a story, it could be a pirate ship and together they go to play their game and defend other pirates trying to their ship. We incorporate the tennis and they love it.”
