flying visits by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to Cooktown and Mossman (along with Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg’s visit to Mareeba) last week have shed little light on what will happen next in the Billy Gordon saga. They were both in the Cook electorate canvassing the mood of voters as to whether or not they think Mr Gordon should resign. Reports suggest that Billy Gordon won’t resign from parliament, but he has left the door open to such a move, if necessary, in the future. As such, Billy is here to stay it would seem, after ringing endorsements by Noel Pearson on ABC’s Lateline, who stated that Billy can legally remain in parliament as Member for Cook; and it’s a matter for the voters of Cook to decide. “It’s not up to the Premier or the speaker, or the opposition to demand his resignation from parliament, it’s up to the people of Cape York to decide at the next poll,” he said. In what state does that leave the business community throughout the electorate? The seat of Cook has a vast geographical area which includes the Gulf and Torres Strait. But one must not forget that it also encompasses the highly populated areas of Cooktown, Mareeba, Mossman and Port Douglas. After all the allegations, how seriously will Mr Gordon be taken in a roll that demands accountability, integrity and leadership? Questions are now being asked as to how effective he will be as the Member for Cook. His position is now compromised. Who will invite Mr Gordon to speak at a high school presentation night? Or a community function in the Cook electorate, with those allegations hanging over his head. Needless to say, it appears Billy’s election victory came as a huge surprise, even to him. So much so, that he was on his way to the ALP celebrations in Cairns when he got confirmation of victory. An overwhelming anti-Newman sentiment across the state on January 31, drove voters to the best alternative, coupled with preferences, easily put Labor in a strong position to win, regardless of the name on the ballot paper. Putting it bluntly, if Daffy Duck was running for Labor, Daffy Duck would have won. The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce had invited the Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, to address the Chamber members at a luncheon on April 29, 2015. In light of the recent allegations involving Mr Gordon, the Chamber has canvassed its members; and now do not believe it appropriate for him to address the luncheon. President of The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Joe Moro said: “Our Chamber is seriously concerned that our community’s wishes and issues will not be adequately delivered by a Member of Parliament who no-longer has the support of communities in Cook and members of the Queensland Parliament. “With this in mind, we have now respectfully written to the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, to request her presence at the Luncheon on the April 29, in Mr Gordon’s place. “We have asked her to attend to address the business community of Mareeba and people of Cook and answer some of their serious concerns. “As one of the larger populated towns in the Cook electorate, The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce will continue to support our members and the wider community to ensure a prosperous and fair future for all in Mareeba and the electorate of Cook.” Tom Gilmore, Mayor of the Mareeba Shire Council, has many years of experience in state politics, as both a government minister and sitting member of parliament. Here, he sheds some light on to the question: Who is qualified to be a member of Parliament? “The question of who is qualified to be a Member of Parliament in Queensland is clearly outlined in the Parliament of Queensland Act,” he said. 15 year old Kiara Cabassi is proud to represent her school, Mareeba State High and her community in the ‘Creative Generation’ State Schools OnStage, event in Brisbane. She received notification that she was one of 35 successful in gaining a place as a backing vocalist out of 250 state school students across Queensland. Kiara says she is looking forward to working with and learning from professional artists after singing for 10 years. “The experience of being on the big stage and a professional stage is something I am really looking forward to,” she says. “It will be the biggest stage that I have ever performed on.” There is a set list of at least 20 songs that each performer can pick from including modern and classical songs.

“I like to sing all types of genres, but mainly modern,” she said. “I listen to a lot of Adele, so I sing a lot of her songs.” Her mum, Palmina Cabassi, says they found Kiara’s voice by mistake. “It just happened, so we went with it and gave her vocal lessons. “She wakes up singing and goes to bed singing.” Kiara had some training in Melbourne to open up her vocals, by completing warm ups which included singing scales. Creative Generation is the largest youth performing arts event in Queensland which will be showcased at the Brisbane Convention Centre in July. She will have to attend several rehearsals in Brisbane over the next few months before the final event.

AN upgrade to Bendigo Bank’s national network has resulted in a brand new look for its Atherton-based branch. As part of the new design - and the bank having a strong community focus - some existing furniture was donate to local not-forprofit organisations. Atherton Branch Manager Doug Welch said he was glad that all attempts to provide existing furniture to the groups had been successful. “By standard measures, we’re not a big bank, but when it comes to the community and our point of difference, we’re bigger than that, much, much, bigger,” he said. The following groups received furniture: Tableland Men’s Shed, Tinaroo Rural Fire Brigade, Tablelands Lapidary Club, Ather-

ton Lions Club and Atherton Show Society. “This renovated branch will form part of Bendigo Bank’s ‘Network of the Future’ project, which aims to meet the changing needs of our customers. “Included within the renovation is a great mural of the Atherton streetscape from the 1900’s, which the Historical Society of Atherton provided. It is worth a visit to the branch to see what Atherton looked like in years past. The branch’s design will promote a welcoming and engaging environment that allows customers to choose how they interact with the bank. “The new layout incorporates technology to make transactions more efficient and allow our staff more time to spend with customers,” Mr Welch added.

LNP canvasses Cook electorate By Angela Ruggeri and Justin Fris

LNP Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg was a keen observer at the Mareeba Saleyards last Tuesday. Flanked by former Barron River MP Michael Trout and current Member for Mount Ommaney Tarnya Smith, Mr Springborg spoke with farmers and residents of the Cook electorate, in a bid to gauge public opinion of Billy Gordon’s future in state politics. Mr Gordon formally resigned from the ALP last Monday, with the Qld political landscape uncertain as to whether he will resign from state politics and force a by-election in the seat of Cook. Addressing the local media, Mr Springborg said he was glad to be back in the Cook electorate and outlined the importance of his visit from the outset. “It’s very important for me to be in this community,” he said. “This is about the fourth time I’ve been here in the last six months. “When I was here last, the Mayor (Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Tom Gilmore) indicated that he would like to see me in the not too distant future, along with

several other members of the community.” Mr Springborg added that the state focus had specifically shifted to the Cape and the Far North, in light of issues surrounding the current Member for Cook, Billy Gordon. “I think there is no doubt that the Labor Party have let down the people of Far North Queensland,” he said. “They have also let down the people of Cook, by failure in their pre-selection process and by doing so; have failed to level with Queenslanders.” Ms Smith, who is the LNP’s Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs, said she had been in direct contact with Mr Gordon’s ex partner, who had ‘poured her heart out’ during the penning of an emotive letter. On the same day, Premier Palaszczuk was also canvassing the Cook electorate, but bypassed Mareeba and only visited Cooktown and Mossman. She met with several local stakeholders and residents within the Cook electorate, in a bid to gain greater understanding of the Far North’s reaction to the saga. Both parties have refused to enter into speculation as to who would represent them if Cook went to a by-election.

Michael Trout, Lawrence Springborg (Opposition Leader) and Tarnya Smith (Shadow Minsister of Indigenous Affairs)

Concerns raised as state’s focus shifts to Cook from page 1 “Part 1. Section 64 of that Act is quite specific; and on the face of it, it appears that there is no question that the Member for Cook qualifies as a citizen able to take his place in the Parliament. “For clarity, the Member for Cook remains a Member of Parliament, unless otherwise disqualified by becoming bankrupt or being convicted for a criminal offence involving a twelve months' custodial sentence. “A member can also be disqualified from membership of the Parliament by being absent from the Parliament for more than twelve consecutive sitting days, without having gained leave from the assembly. “Questions have been raised about whether or not the government might accept or reject the vote of the Member for Cook in the Parliament. Indeed, as a sitting member, the Member for Cook is entitled to cast his vote on any matter arising in the assembly as he may choose. “It is not and cannot be a question of accepting or rejecting that vote. “The better question would be whether the government or opposition might agree to depend upon the vote of the Member for Cook, in guaranteeing the confidence of the house and the successful passage of legislation through the house. “That is entirely a question for the leaders of both the govern-

ment and the opposition. “In truth, the Member for Cook is elected to the Parliament, enjoys all of the privileges of the Parliament, including the right to attend and to vote on individual items as he sees fit. “In terms of the Member for Cook remaining in the Parliament for the full term, this is a matter entirely for the Member for Cook, and no person has the authority to force his resignation.” Mayor of the Cook Shire Council Peter Scott said: “Billy should resign from parliament, as he has lost the trust of the electorate and no longer represents the Labor party,” he said. “A by-election is the accepted democratic process and should be done as soon as possible. “If there is a by-election, it’s Mr Gordon’s call as to whether he runs, however I doubt his ability to do so, if not aligned and supported by a major party. “The political uncertainty we have in the state has not affected the Cook Shire Council negatively. We continually receive strong support from and dealing directly with State Government departments and ministries.” The Express has made numerous calls to Mr Gordon since he was elected, regarding several issues; and at time of print, no response has been received.

AT first glance, Estonia and the FNQ town of Julatten are about as far apart geographically as they are in terms of culture and climate. But for committee members of the Julatten library, an email for two Estonian delegates opened a whole new understanding of European migration in our region. The email centered on the life of Adele Koll and her son Endel, who both spent decades of their lives giving back to the Far North, after emigrating from Estonia in 1927. Last Wednesday at Julatten’s Geraghty Park, locals welcomed Janek Verblas and Arne Tegelmen, who both work for the Palamuse Museum in Estonia. Both Mr Verblas and Mr Tegelmen met with locals and Estonian ex-pats, in a bid to piece further understanding of Adele and Endel’s life in the Far North. Adele’s adventure captivated sectors of Estonia, with national author Oscar Luts basing Adele’s youthful likeness (the character dubbed ‘Raja Teele’) in his novel, “Kevade”. Helena Kanak-Dickenson, who has completed significant research on Adele and Endel, said she was able to be given greater insight into Adele’s youth, due to Luts’s novel. “In ‘Kevade’ (translated ‘The Spring’), although Adele was an only child in real life, the author used his literacy licence to give her a fictitious sister in his novel,” she said. Born in Palamuse, Estonia, in August of 1890, Adele was an only child of Jan and Miina-Rosalie Partelpoeg. At the age of 19, she married Oswald Koll and three years later, had a son named Endel. Although no official documentation outlines the reasons for their journey to Australia, those who knew the Kolls believe it may have been an adventure-inspired trip. After initially settling in Gympie, the trio began their time in Australia as farmers. Grief however surfaced two years later, when Oswald passed away in 1929. Widowed and caring for Endel, Adele soldiered on farming, only to be submitted to further tragedy, losing many possessions and livestock in a bushfire. With many people would be tempted to give up or return to their native land if discouraged by these events, Adele’s spirit never wavered.

After the fire, she began to work as a motel manager and a hair stylist, with herself and Endel temporarily relocating to the Atherton Tablelands. She would eventually spend time working in the tobacco industry, where she would regularly commute between Mareeba and Dimbulah. Out of season employment was no barrier for Adele, who worked as a cook for Main Roads camps, along with workers at Wolfram Camp. Ms Kanak-Dickenson said it was clear that Adele’ spirit and never say die attitude left a lasting impression on those who knew her. “Adele had a pioneering spirit, a practical approach to life and was never one to be defeated or left unemployed,” she said. Adele eventually moved to Julatten during the 1940’s and formed a new chapter of her life. Endel, meanwhile, enlisted with the army, where he was based out of Mt Molloy. He would be a part of the army for four years, before he was discharged. Rosy times also bloomed for Adele, who found love again. “It was about this time Adele hooked up with her lifelong companion Paddy Groves,” Ms Kanak-Dickenson said. “A gentle and likeable part-indigenous character, who remained a part of her life until he passed away suddenly in 1967.” After developing an obsession with mining, Endel developed several hermit-like tendancies and preferred his own company over others. It got to a point where he would only emerge for a weekly Saturday lunch with his mother, before disappearing for several days. Conversely, Adele was the complete opposite. A very social person, she loved conversation and tending to her vegetable garden. “What Adele lacked in stature, she made up in robustness,” Ms Kanak-Dickenson said. “There were not too many that dared cross her on a bad day. “She took paid in her vegetable produce (especially cabbages) and often justifiably boasted about her good sale prices.” These tales among several others were shared amongst the crowd last Wednesday, in a fitting tribute for Adele and Endel Koll.

‘It’s my life and my choice’ Ray Blain from Department of Transport with St Stephen’s Catholic College students during a session at the RYDA day.

LOCAL high school students filed eagerly into Davies Park last Tuesday and participated in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program. Students from Atherton State High School, Mareeba State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College were split into six separate groups and participated in a variety of theory and practical driving concepts. Mareeba Rotary Youth Services Director Charlie Martens said 140 students were participating in the program, with some of the activities at times confronting and emotional. “The day is all about providing driving awareness for students who are on the cusp of getting their driver’s licence,” he said “A lot of themes across the day all come down to

good choices and bad choices. “These choices often stem from alcohol and fatigue, which result in a significant amount of road crashes.” In its sixth year, the program also featured presentations from local Police, department of Transport and a crash survivor, who passed on their road experience and knowledge to the students. “For every person who dies in a motor accident, at least 20 people are seriously injured,” Mr Martens told the students. “The motto of today’s presentation is: It’s my life and my choice, but what can I do to keep my mates safe? Some of the practical activities include recognition and awareness of traffic hazards, along with education of adequate stopping distance when behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Pendulum delicately poised in Hann Highway debate By Angela Ruggeri and Justin Fris

(Peter Wellington, Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth) held negotiations with both the ALP and LNP, in a bid to outline who they would support in forming a minority government. Both KAP independents provided a 28 page document, which outlined key priorities that would be ideally supported by the incoming government. Near the top of the list, was a commitment for funding the Hann Highway redevelopment. If Mr Katter and Mr Knuth are courted by both parties in a bid to gain their support, they might just get their wish.

THE great debate over redevelopment of the Hann Highway could be on the brink of a new twist, in light of a political minefield engulfing Far North Queensland. With two KAP independents (Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth, pictured) potentially required to support either the ALP or LNP into forming a minority state government, it may be the break supporters of the redevelopment have been looking for. Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey appeared to hit a raw nerve in certain regional sectors a fortnight ago, where he appeared to question the validity of spending substantial funding on redeveloping the highway as serious inland alternative. “It’s a substantial amount of money for a highway that has just under 100 vehicle movements a day; so we have to look at that in detail,” Mr Bailey said. Mr Knuth (who is the Member for Dalrymple) has long been in favour of upgrading the highway. In a recent interview, he outlined fundamental benefits of redevelopment. “Along with the redevelopment being able to shave off travel distance between Cairns and Melbourne, it will also open access for agriculture and to the western mineral province,” he said. Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long said she would be in favour of any redevelopment plans, and agreed it would provide an easier route for northern produce travelling down to southern-based markets. Prior to the January 31 election, the LNP had pledged a four year commitment to sealing the remaining inland portion of the highway, but were removed from power after the ALP was able to form a minority government. But in light of new developments involving the current Member for Cook resigning from the ALP last Mon(opposite day, the Palaszczuk Government has lost its majority. In the days after the election, all elected independents

TOURISM across the Atherton Tablelands is entering a bold new era, with digital enhancement of material for prospective visitors. Tropical Tablelands Tourism Chairman Michael Trout was on hand last Thursday at Skybury Coffee Farmgate in Mareeba, to officially launch the latest edition of TTT’s ‘Discover’ magazine. “By far this is the best publication we have ever produced,” he said. “Discover is the most widely distributed visitor guide across the eastern seaboard. “It is also available at various camping and travel shows in Sydney and Melbourne, along with visitor centres across Queensland.” Prior to the function, Mr Trout had presented to members of the Tablelands Regional Council, outlining findings from a recent tourism-based study. The report found that within the Atherton Tablelands catchment area (including Kuranda), there had been 731,000 visitors to the region throughout the duration of the report, with $227 million injected into the local economy. Mr Trout said 81 per cent of all visitors to the Atherton Tablelands were drive-based visits and he praised both Mareeba Shire Council and the TRC in supporting tourism in the region. New additions to the ‘Discover’ magazine were outlined to councillors, with an enhanced digital and online presence now available for tourists. “For the first time, ‘Discover’ magazine will be able to be accessed by a smartphone app,” Mr Trout said. “Consumers will be able to directly hit the phone number and ring for tourism bookings. “We will now be able to directly link consumers to bookings.” Mr Trout added TTT board members had an equal focus on domestic and international engagement and were excited about the future of tourism on the Tablelands. Premier Palaszczuk said she will not do anything to drive up further power pain for Queenslanders.

AUSTRALIAN Competition and Consumer Commission Chairman Rod Sims said he is ‘concerned’ about the Palaszczuk Government’s idea of merging state-based energy companies. Mr Sims added that the merging of Stanwell and CS Energy would ‘affect competition within the sector’ and potentially increase power prices for all Queenslanders. These comments were seized upon by Shadow Treasurer John-Paul Langbroek, who said it exposed the Palaszczuk Government’s position on future power pricing. “The keystone of Labor’s economic ‘plan’ has been exposed as nothing more than a harebrained scheme from a treasurer just making things up on the run. “It’s no secret that Annastacia Palaszczuk and Curtis Pitt were under immense pressure during the campaign to reveal exactly how they would manage the state’s finances and now it’s become clear that they can’t. “This smacks of inexperience and incompetence from

a government that’s not ready to govern and sadly it’s Queenslanders who will suffer.” Premier Palaszczuk countered these claims saying that her government would do their best to avoid power increases for Queensland families. “This government will not do anything to drive up household electricity bills, “she said. “We are taking these issues really seriously.” Treasurer Curtis Pitt said any model implemented would be consolidation-based and would be able to yield savings for the state. “We said we consolidate and bring the five businesses down to two,” he said. “And with that, we’ve said we’ll put all those savings into debt repayments. Mr Pitt added that he had been in contact with Mr Sims and had a constructive conversation of the current situation.

THE SPIRIT LIVES 2014 - 2018 ANZAC DAY - SATURDAY 25TH APRIL In Part 2, of The Express Newspaper’s tribute to the celebration of 100 years of ANZAC, we continue to bring you the stories of some of Mareeba’s fallen sons.

The Sands of the Desert

Trooper John ‘Jack’ Leswell is remembered on panel 58 at the Jerusalem War Cemetery in Israel.

The late Trooper John ‘Jack’ Leswell of Mareeba.

John Leswell was born on February, 12 1895. As was tradition in those days, he was known throughout this life as “Jack”. At the tender age of 19 Jack enlisted as a Trooper with the Australian 11th Light Horse Regiment, 2nd Infantry on December 31, 1914. Jack embarked aboard His Majesty’s Army Troop ship, Borda A30, in Brisbane on June, 2, 1915, en route to his ultimate destination, the war in Europe. The military high command changed the initial plans and disembarked the troops at Alexandria. Captain Charles A Munro of B Squadron

11th light horse, under whose command Jack had been for approximately a year, was the first bearer of the sad news. Captain Munro wrote to Jack’s mother, Mary Hanna Peters, to give her a short account of the incident that claimed his life. Jack was killed in action after taking a bullet at Maghara, in the Hastim frontier in Egypt. Captain Munroe attended the burial near the site where Jack fell. There in the desert sands of Egypt, on October 15, 1916, stood a solitary lone cross his mates has put in place. Captain George H Vernon also despatched correspondence to Jack’s mother,

to give a full account of the bullet that dealt the fatal blow, penetrating just above the left shoulder blade; and exiting under the right as he scaled a steep rocky hill to route the Turks from their position. His mates carried him back down to the gully where his C O met him. He judged him to be quite bright and able to speak, but in excruciating pain. After receiving medical attention Jack was transported by camel in an uncomfortable journey to the field ambulance. After arriving in extreme pain, he passed out and died around 1pm, shortly after arriving at base camp.

His mates dug his grave close to Maghara in the centre of the Sinai Peninsula; and put a cross and his board in place. It was described as “a lonely grave for the poor lad way out in the desert” the site was eventually lost to the ravages of war. In another letter sent to Jack’s mother, his mate told her. “The sniper shot him only 50 yards away, but I can faithfully say that sniper will shoot no more, as he was riddled with rifle and machine gun fire, soon after his deed.” Jack is honoured on the Jerusalem Memorial, Panel 58, in the Jerusalem War Cemetery, in Israel.

Ella (Lily James) initially welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home when her father remarries. But after his death, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family, relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella. When she meets Kit (Richard Madden), a dashing stranger in the woods, she is unaware he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace. The invitation extended to all maidens to attend a ball at the palace gives Ella hope to meet him again. Thanks to her fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter), her dream comes true - with the help of a pumpkin, a few mice and a couple of lizards. E, as the kind hearted Captain against Stellan Skarsgard's corruptible Grand Duke. Richard Madden, poor bugger, plays the decent, honest, incorruptible romantic male lead, a vanilla role impossible to pull off effectively in live action; but he does the best that can be done.

When Oh (voice of Jim Parsons), a loveable misfit from another planet, lands on Earth and finds himself on the run from his own people, he forms an unlikely friendship with an adventurous girl named Tip (Rihanna) who is on a quest of her own. Through a series of comic adventures with Tip, Oh comes to understand that being different and making mistakes is all part of being human. And while he changes her planet and she changes his world, they discover the true meaning of the word home.

It is a magnificent set up with a house build a few years back all out of hardwood, never painted so you really get that timber feeling throughout. Bedrooms with walk in robes upstairs and a verandah overlooking the land. Huge kitchen, dining, lounge, office and an under cover outdoor area downstairs. All that fenced off so your pets and children are safe. Close by there is a large greenhouse, four bay open shed for your cars or machinery, stock yards, accommodation for poultry of all kinds. PROPERTY Highly sought after in this location

Mention Rains Street and anyone can tell you that it is a highly sought after location. Not many homes come on the market in this area, and when they do, they don't last long. This solid three bedroom one bathroom home is a great little home and would be perfect for anyone looking to downsize, or for that first home buyer or investor, homes like this are so versatile. Although the home is about 30 years old, there's not a lot to do. The outside of the home has recently been repainted, there is a fully renovated bathroom and the kitchen has older decor, but is in good condition. There is a great rear patio which overlooks the backyard, and the home is fitted with security screens, the only thing left to do is move in. Situated on a fully fenced 800m2 allotment there's plenty of room for the kids to run around until their hearts' content or even keep a pet or two. Currently returning $300pw in rental income this property will make a great, low-maintenance investment. • Three bedroom, one bathroom home • Solid block construction • Freshly repainted • Renovated bathroom • Excellent neighbourhood • Currently returning $300pw • Security Screened throughout • Big rear patio, great for relaxing! • 3x3m Garden Shed • Fenced 800m2 allotment For more information or to arrange an inspection contact exclusive agent Remo Esposito at Central Realty today. Five minute snooze snuffs Rooster spirit By Justin Fris

SOUTHERN Suburbs overcame a scratchy opening to defeat the Atherton Roosters 34-10 at a chilly Roosters Stadium last Thursday night. After both sides went into the half time break deadlocked at 6-all, a slick spell of three tries in five minutes put a dagger through the Roosters’ spirit. After a better showing against Edmonton last week, the Roosters began the match with great enthusiasm, along with an appetite for tackling. Suburbs were given great field position on a regular basis during the opening stages, due to silly Roosters penalties piggybacking their yardage. It was during the first half that Suburbs began a classic tactic of wearing the defence out. It would be early in the second half when the fruits of their labour would rise to the surface. Early in the tackle count, Suburbs players would hit the ball up the middle, with tackles four and five utilised out wide with quick core speed and passing. By continuing to work the middle of the field for a sustained period, the Roosters defence eventually sported several holes, which were taken

advantage by Suburbs later in the match. While eventual dominance was being finalised, the Roosters took the lead on the quarter hour mark through James Clark. With repeat sets near the Suburbs line, the Roosters swarmed on a deft little grubber, with Clark rejoicing with his teammates. Both sets of supporters could have been forgiven for looking away from the action during the middle of the first half, with the continual stoppages frustrating everyone at Roosters Stadium. In one particular sequence of play, there were three penalties conceded by both sides in a space of five tackles. Suburbs, who had only played one game of football in the opening three rounds, finally shook off their cobwebs and levelled up proceedings on the half time break. Suburbs duo Cephas Chinfat and Richard Joinbee were beginning to heat up for the visitors, but most Roosters supporters appeared optimistic about their side’s chances. Little sooner had both sides returned for the second half, before Suburbs took control of the

game while the Roosters fell asleep at the wheel. Former Rooster Jarrod Burton used his creative intellect to perfection, with tries to Luke Saunders and Jason Nicolaou adding further pain for the home side. The sudden flurry really rocked the home side, who had held their own for much of the contest leading up to it. Trailing 22-6, enthusiasm waned and fatigued played a real factor in the home side’s application to the contest. Fatigue is never your friend when behind in a football match and it often leads to poor decision making and silly errors. Roosters fullback Jacob Rivett still battled manfully for the home side, with Waylon Joseph and Rhys Brady also performing well. Two late tries cemented a workmanlike vic-

tory for the visitors, with Shane McCooey and Aidan Day starting their Easter weekend in style. A consolation try to Curtis Nehow gave something for Roosters supporters to cheer about on their drive home, amidst the continual butchering of the football. Southern Suburbs Coach Greg Annison paid credit to the Roosters’ spirit post-match and said he was impressed at how they stuck in and battled hard. Annison added that the unique schedule of one match in three weeks had been challenging for his playing group; and match simulation scenarios had played a big role in how his men had trained leading into the match. “We were keen to stick to our structures and utilise our speed core out wide when required,” he said.

THE Gummaz turned on the style last Tuesday night, running away with a comprehensive 59-20 victory over the Killers, in round seven of the local women’s basketball league. After a rusty beginning from both sides, Gummaz players were able to utilise superior positioning and make their shots stick. Opening passages of this match were some of the most intriguing you could witness in a game of basketball. Adopting a version of zone defence, Killers defenders were extremely loose off their opponents and allowed the Gummaz to possess the ball for lengthy periods. Unfortunately for the Gummaz, they could not capitalise on good ball; and it took five minutes in the term for the first basket to sail through the hoop. Once it sunk, it ushered in a new era for a match. I’m not sure whether someone called Noah and his ark courtside, because all players routinely flooded one section of the court from that moment on. Gummaz duo Deidre Brumby and Rosina Gutchen-Wilson were continual thorns in the Killers’ side, by breaking up play in mid-court and launching speedy counter attacks. Despite trailing 25-8 at the half, Christine Leet and Tahleah Haddow were rays of hope for the Killers, toiling for every pass and shot. Any brightside for the Killers was pierced by Gutchen-Wilson, who drained a series of threes from downtown and sealed the win. The match was played in good spirits by both sides and was worthy of a bigger crowd.

U/10’s All Stars continue to shine at hockey The U10’s All Stars continue to remain dominant on the field with a great win over Yungaburra. Talytha MacDonald was the player of the match scoring an impressive four goals, with Jhai Mehmet also putting away a goal. Although fielding an understrength side, the Yungaburra team continue to show improved skill and depth and were true sports stars in defeat. In another closely contested match, Atherton narrowly won over Sharks 3-2. Reis Dane scored two impressive goals for the Sharks; but the great defence and attack of the Atherton team saw them eventual winners.

Adam Keevers and P Stevens were the stand out players for Atherton. The U13’s Scorchers again took to the field against the All Stars, with Mackenzie May scoring the lone goal for the Scorchers. The All Stars managed to continually bombard the box and walked away with a great 3-1 win. The Troopers (aided by Clem Lucey, Trent Delai, Andrew Earl and Angus Condon) were winners over Vikings 5-1. With the score line did not reflect the great game played by both teams. Jake McGonan scored an impressive goal for the Vikings, with

PAGE 22 The Express, Wednesday, April 8, 2015

Jack Curcio, Jayden Memet and Ashton Degnian all showing improved skills on the field. The U13’s rep team put up a valiant effort to hold the All Stars to 3-0 score line. Riley Pollen scored 2 classic goals, with Tessaro also scoring. An ever improving Voodoos played a great match, defeating the Jaguars 2-1. Team Captain Tanya Purdy supported and encouraged all her players to lift their game in a match that had spectators and parents on the edge of their seats till full- time. Again both teams showed great sportsmanship and are a credit to their coaches and Association.

The Ladies competition is also heating up. The Cruisers had yet another convincing win against Voodoos, with Dawn Guilfoyle scoring 4 goals. The shooters were outstanding on the field, with Brooke Ainsley, Maddie Duncan and Courtney Ainsley all scoring two goals apiece in their 9-2 win over the Cougars. In the last games of the day, Waterloo had the narrowest of losses to Woteva, with Taylor Somerville scoring the only goal of the match, whilst Plastered Vets had a 1-0 win over Totally Holcim. A reminder to all players and parents that fixtures resume on April 18.

Pride for his favourite club By Justin Fris

NORTHERN Pride Captain Jason Roos is one the INTRUST Super Cup’s elite footballers, but has never forgotten where he comes from. Roos, who played all of his junior football with the Mareeba Gladiators, fondly recalls how his football life began at Davies Park. “I remember starting out in U/7’s, all the way through to U/12’s,” he said. “I then had a bit of a spell, due to a persistent knee injury. “A few years later, I remember sitting down and watching Mareeba play Ivanhoes in the U/18’s and decided that I wanted to give football another crack.” Back when he was a junior, Roos would rush over to Davies Park after school and would kick the footy around before training with his mates. “We didn’t have to wear boots in juniors back then, so many kids played barefoot,” he said. “But we all wore headgear; I know my Dad always made sure I did. “But above all, I used to love the crowd at Davies Park. The mateship with all the coaches and teammates at the Gladiators was great and the supporters were excellent.” Some may be unaware that while Roos was completing his apprenticeship- he would drive to Mareeba and back for games and training- such was the love for his hometown club. “Those were really long days and back then, I thought it was a bit of a tough schedule,” he said. “Compared to now though with training commitments with the Pride, two sessions a week isn’t that much at all (laughs)” Roos recalls his initiation to first grade football training with the Gladiators, which occasion-

ally involved 10x400 meter sprints. Now with the Pride, those sprints appear to pale into comparison, when Roos and his teammates need to complete ‘The Malcolm’s’ drill. “The drill starts with you lying on your stomach and then sprinting 20 meters,” he said. “You then go back onto your stomach, get up and run backwards. “We are generally given 15 seconds to complete one repetition.” Locally, the Mareeba Gladiators are having a difficult season, anchored to bottom and desperate to record victory. Roos, who still keeps tabs on his former side, said he was hopeful the Gladiators would stick together and enjoy playing their football together. “It’s never fun when you aren’t winning football matches,” he said. “I hope the boys can stick together. “The locals always enjoy their night football in Mareeba and hopefully they Ex-Mareeba Gladiator Jason Roos in action for the Northern Pride (Supplied Photo) get to see a few wins.” Roos stood on the hallowed turf of have to drink a litre of water.” role, especially if we have to fly down for an ANZ Stadium last October, when the Pride was After each match, Pride players take to the ice away game. victorious against NSW Cup premiers, the Pen- baths and complete solid recovery in a bid to be “Early afternoon kickoffs we can generally fly rith Panthers. ready for the following week. back to Cairns straight after, otherwise we stay “The concept of the game was excellent,” he Along with full-time employment, Roos man- overnight.” said. “Being involved in the match was a pretty ages to juggle two weight sessions a week, along Memories of Barlow Park are fond for Roos, special feeling.” with three general sessions. having won a grand final with the Gladiators in A feed early in the morning often begins “With a young family, during the season it can 2007. matchday for Roos, who makes sure he is hydrat- sometimes be pretty tough,” he said. “Sometimes He, along with the Mareeba community, are ed before running out on the field. “City to the Bush a success” By Justin Fris

JUNIOR rugby league footballers travelled from the big smoke last Saturday, as part of the “City to the Bush Super Saturday” initiative. In a tremendous boost for junior rugby league clubs in the bush, the successful event again united metro and country footballers with a common love of rugby league. Over 2,000 junior players took part in the event which was held in the following locations: Ravenshoe. Malanda, Atherton, Mossman, Yarrabah, Innisfail and Tully. QRL Northern Division Assistant Manager Dave Maiden (who played his junior football with the Ravenshoe Tigers) said he was a big supporter of the concept. “The ‘City to the Bush’ is the opportunity for smaller clubs to host Cairns based clubs and play against teams they wouldn’t normally play against during their regular season,” he said.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

“In July, the ‘Bush’ will come to the city with a Super Saturday of games scheduled to be played in Cairns.” Cairns & District Junior Rugby League Chairman Glenn Budge said the clubs were excited to travel to the Tablelands, Innisfail, Mossman & Yarrabah for the games. “It is a great way to finish off our preseason,” he said. “We have strong registration numbers in most age groups with registrations still being accepted by clubs for girls and boys looking to play “The Greatest Game of All.” Ravenshoe JRL hosted the Cairns Brothers and Herberton club, with Club President Craig Smith agreeing that it was a busy day. “We have a great band of volunteers who have done a great job ensuring the day went well.” he said. “The kids love their footy and have had a great day.” If you would like to register your child in rugby league events in your area, please visit: www.playnrl.com
