Hospital garden dedicated to Cedric Davies

Cedric Davies was commemorated last week at the very garden he helped develop and grow at Mareeba Hospital. A brass plaque will forever commemorate the garden area at Mareeba Hospital’s west wing as the ‘Cedric Davies Memorial Garden’. The plaque was formally unveiled by Cedric’s family – wife June and son’s Cedric Jnr and Kevin Davies and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health board Chair Bob Norman.

House buying debate By Justin Fris

R

ECENT remarks from Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey about housing affordability sent many Australians into earnest debate amongst each other. “The starting point for a first home buyer is to get a good job that pays good money,” he said. “If you’ve got a good job and it pays good money and you have security in relation to that job, then you can go to the bank and you can borrow money and that’s readily affordable.”

These remarks have been taken on board by Core Logic RD research data analyst Tim Lawless, who has facilitated a nationwide housing affordability map. Freely accessible online – participants can enter their details (marital status and age range) into the database – which determines the likelihood of home or unit affordability within their local government jurisdiction. So how did the Tablelands fare as a region? Well, according to the housing affordability map, it depends on your personal circumstances, in-

come and preference. If you are single, aged between 25 and 34 and wish to purchase a unit, the results are as follows: Median Unit Value ($205,000), Median Gross Income ($45,564), Estimated Gross Income for purchase ($46,857) With an earnings difference of $1,293, on these medians, purchasing a unit would be very much nip and tuck. However, if you have those same set of circumstances and wish to purchase a house at median price, it is a longshot at best:

Median House Value ($315,000), Median Gross Income ($45,564), Estimated Gross Income for purchase ($72,000) With a massive earnings difference of $26,436 on these medians, a single person purchasing a house would find the going extremely tough. If you are a couple and wanting to purchase either a unit or a home as first buyers into the market – even with average incomes – you will find the going significantly easier. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Rotary flame lights up lunch The ‘Rotary Flame to End Polio Now’ was lit in Mareeba last Tuesday at Mareeba Rotary’s new initiative ‘Rotary@lunchtime’. The flame that was first launched in Chennai, India, in December 2014 to celebrate India being polio-free; and to commemorate the 30th anniversary of PolioPlus, has travelled the world with local Cairns Rotarian Susanne Rea, as part of the World’s Greatest Meal quest to ‘End Polio Now’. Susanne, a polio survivor, project planner and Global Team Co-ordinator of ‘The World’s Greatest Meal’, made the special visit to Mareeba to share her inspirational story and join in the launch of Rotary@lunchtime; with proceeds from the event launch going to ‘The World’s Greatest Meal’. The ‘World’s Greatest Meal’ has a goal of raising $4 million by World Polio Day in February. Since December 2013, millions of dollars has already been raised by people all over the world, holding a ‘World’s Greatest Meal’ event and donating the cost of a meal or a small donation. Every dollar donated turns into three, after a matching contribution from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. “It amazes me how much has been raised and the work that has been achieved in such a short period of time; and it’s all thanks to people like we see in Mareeba today, holding a lunch and making a donation,” she said. “Everyone needs to eat, so why not do it for a good cause.” Trica Cannon, Mareeba Rotary Club Member and Rotary@lunch coordinator said she was thrilled to have Susanne at the launch and share her amazing story. “It’s amazing how one small idea from a Cairns Rotarian can go global and change lives around the world.” If you would like to know more about the ‘World’s Greatest Meal’ head to wgmeal.com

Can you afford to buy a house? From Page 1 In order to get a real understanding on whether these projections were accurate, several local real estate personnel were contacted for their insight into the situation. Uniformly, it was agreed that for a single first home buyer on the Tablelands, saving for a house deposit – let alone paying off a regular mortgage – is almost out of reach. The following situation provides an example of what a single 25-34 year old on the Tablelands has to encounter in a bid to purchase a house for the first time. With an income of $45,500 and wishing to purchase a $300,000 home, the applicant has to enquire with a mortgage broker and bank. Comprehending these variables, the particular mortgage broker informs the applicant they can only qualify for a maximum loan of $276,000. In turn, this means the applicant will need to present a $28,000 deposit, before purchase. Once agreed, their mortgage repayments equate to $350 per week. Breaking this down even further, this translates into a weekly income of $875 a week, before tax. Once tax is taken out ($150-200 per week), it doesn’t leave a whole lot for day to day living. Some real estate agent institutions may also use an income guide for calculating conditions for rental property suitability. In the case of the applicant earning $45,500 per annum, a weekly rent of $350 would be deemed un-

suitable on the income guide by some institutions. But amidst these figures, there are success stories in the community; with one being local Mareeba United Football Club talent, Adrian Madrid. Madrid – a talented youngster, who is a local lad and has reputable employment in Mareeba – received telling advice. “I was pretty keen to get into the housing market,” he said. “So I had a bit of a word with Alex (Alex Srhoj, Madrid’s coach and local real estate agent) to see what was available. “He showed me a few places, informed me the market and showed me around. I wanted something around the $250-300,000 mark, which is what I was looking at for my first home.” Madrid said he wasn’t taught certain specifics about finance, property and mortgages during high school; and has steadily built up his understanding through research and consultation. Staff from Mareeba Community Housing services were concerned by the data, with manager Patricia Goldfinch telling The Express that the company had completed a similar local housing affordability report. Their homelessness intervention session has also had a venue change; it will be now held between 1-4pm at Arnold Park on Thursday, August 6. For those interested in Tim Lawless’s national housing affordability map, it can be accessed at: www.sbs. com.au/news/map/housingaffordability

‘He was a sterling gentleman’ By Justin Fris “Cedric Davies was the epitome of citizenship; whose constant contribution was enormous,” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said. Those true sentiments were shared by many at Mareeba Hospital last Thursday morning, where a plaque recognising Mr Davies’ commitment to the hospital was unveiled in front of family and colleagues alike – the ‘Cedric Davies Memorial Garden’. Born in 1936, Mr Davies lived only a stone’s throw away from the Lloyd Street facility. Amongst his many hats, he married and fathered three children. It is fair to say that during his lifetime in Mareeba, Mr Davies embedded himself in the community, by making the region a better place to live. Some may not realise that Mr Davies spent 21 years with Mareeba Shire Council – with 16 of these as Council Chairman – which in those days, was the equivalent of being the Mayor. A Rotarian for 51 years, he had a perfect attendance rate for events. He also spent considerable time at Mareeba Hospital, working to help build better facilities for patients and staff. “We’re here to say thank you and pay respect to a wonderful gentleman that I knew for many years,” Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health board chair Bob Norman said. “You couldn’t be in this community and not know him. He was a sterling gentleman and we owe a great deal of gratitude to Cedric.” Cedric’s wife June – who was approached by Mareeba Hospital for her thoughts of formally dedicating the garden in her husband’s honour – said it was a fitting tribute. “When the hospital told me what they wanted to do; I cried,” she said. “Cedric loved Mareeba and he worked so hard to help grow and improve this town, so it is nice that he is going to be recognised.” Mr Davies’s son Kevin also paid tribute to his father and said the support shown meant a great deal to both him and the Davies family. “I’d like to thank the Hospital Board and community for dedicating this garden to Dad,” he said.

MAREEBA State High School will be under new tutorage this term, with Ms Leanne Fox (pictured) filling in for Jo Soothill. Ms Fox – who has a wealth of experience with diversified backgrounds – has a very much ‘hands on’ style of principal leadership. After spending the last couple of years at Tully State High School, she said there were certain similarities between both schools; and believes a proactive education can have several positive benefits to all students. Prior to commencing her tenure in Mareeba, she spent time with and chatting to MSHS students and school leaders about their concerns and thoughts – a practice she still does to this day, along with time in the classroom (ala ‘the coalface’). Along with her time as Principal at Tully State High School, Ms Fox has spent educational stints in the Northern Territory, Kowanyama and Yarrabah. Armed with a real passion for indigenous education and culture, Ms Fox is keen to adopt a theme of ‘everyone has your back’ to every student who attends the school. In her spare time away from principal duties, Ms Fox loves to spend time with her grandkids who also live in Mareeba – along with reading a good novel.

Future of airport ‘exciting’

By Carl Portella

Chris Cooper, Managing Director of GBR Helicopters, addressed members of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce at a recent luncheon on the direction of aviation in North Queensland GBR Helicopters moved their flight school from Cairns Airport to Mareeba just two years ago using the Mareeba Airport for both local and international students. Mr Cooper is tremendously excited about the future of Mareeba Airport, as it is the perfect location to teach people how to fly. “We have already had quite a large number of students passed their tests and become pilots; the future is incredibly bright for flight training, especially now we are looking overseas to international students to join us as well as locals,” he said. “There are a lot of training schools close to city centers in busy built-up areas where it’s congested and has controlled air space which no one likes. “The most important thing about learning to fly is to relax – if you can’t relax, then you can’t pass on the knowledge to the student. “Mareeba is beautiful; it’s quiet and is the best place I can teach someone to fly. While students from China is our focus at the moment – we are looking at other countries – but in the future we will look to having classes here and helicopter safety training, theory training. “Mareeba’s location lends itself to a very wide range of businesses including engineering, hanger space, commercial services, general aviation and an enormous potential for tourism.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore recently announced that the MSC was successful in securing State Government funding to the tune of $13 million dollars to upgrade of the facility in order to attract businesses like GBR. Once the funding has been signed off on, work on the project will commence; hopefully before the end of the year. Mayor Gilmore said:“We encourage businesses like GBR to Mareeba - the future of aviation is at our doorstep. “Once the upgrade is complete we will seek further funding to make it even better. We are perfectly positioned to give businesses in aviation a cheaper alternative to Cairns so our future looks bright.”

Mareeba Animal Refuge staff (L-R): Bobbie Green, Carmen Mayland and Fay Downey all played a major role in facilitating last Saturday’s ‘Pets in the Park Day’ in Mareeba.

Faithful friends at ‘Pets in the Park Day’ A Picturesque day greeted pet owners from across the Tablelands, who travelled in numbers for the Mareeba Animal Refuge’s ‘Pets in the Park Day’ at Centenary Park on Saturday. Held from 9am, dedicated owners lined up patiently with their owners and took advantage of a special discount micro chipping service on the day. For a select few who arrived early, a micro chip process was com-

pleted for a substantially discounted rate of $25. Local veterinarians from Mareeba and Kuranda volunteered to assist with these duties, along with staff from Mareeba Shire Council. Mareeba Animal Refuge staff spoke of the importance of getting your faithful pet micro chipped and hoped many more would come along and enjoy the event throughout the morning.

Mareeba Heritage Centre JAMIESON HOUSE

In 1905 Walter Jamieson built a sawmill on the northern side of Keeble Street near the railway line, and shortly after, he built Jamieson House on the corner of Keeble and Strattman Streets as his and his wife’s (Annie) home. Walter and Annie had no children but Annie’s niece, Muriel Haybittle, spent her childhood with them. Muriel married Dundee Bostock (he was manager of the sawmill) in 1913. Walter Jamieson died of a heart condition in 1915. Some little time later, William Newell and his wife moved in with Annie while their own house was being built in Constance Street. In 1924, Dundee had an accident at the mill and died from toxaemia. Annie passed away in 1935 after a long illness. Muriel Bostock converted Jamieson House into a boarding house for a period of time until it was sold. It is believed the new owner was Dan Kelly, a well known butcher in Mareeba. Little is known of Grantley and Valda Chaplain who were the next owners.

Eventually the house passed into the hands of the Hyde family. Maude Hyde, the matriarch, was a well known and much respected member of the community and had been the Secretary of the Tobacco Board for many years. The Hyde Family Trust has recently sold Jamieson House to Ron Blundell and Noel Morris who have very generously donated the house to Mareeba Heritage Centre Inc.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift gives colour a spin for health and happiness.

Give colour a spin!

Orange, yellow, red, green, blue, purple, white, brown… did you know our fruits and vegetables come in all colours of the rainbow? In fact, research shows we need to plate up as much colour as possible every day to get the maximum health benefits from fruits and vegetables – and the State Government’s new Healthier. Happier fruit and vegetable campaign aims to help us do just that. The campaign is motivated by the fact that fewer than 10 per cent of all Queenslanders eat the recommended daily intake of five serves of vegetables, and only 58 per cent of adults and 65 per cent of children eat the recommended two serves of fruit every day. Not only do we need to raise our quota of healthy produce – we need to do so across the entire colour spectrum. So what colours can be of greatest benefit to your health? Orange and yellow: Beta-carotene is usually found in orange and yellow fruits and vegetables. These fruit and veg also contain vitamin C – important for the body’s immune system and reducing the risk of cancer. Examples: Carrot, orange, pumpkin, lemon, corn and mango. Red: The antioxidant lycopene is present in red fruits and veggies like tomato and capsicum – especially when cooked! It’s associated with a

reduced risk of some cancers, particularly prostate cancer, and protection against heart disease. Examples: Tomato, red onion, capsicum, cranberries, strawberries and raspberry and red kidney bean. Green: Green leafy vegetables like, spinach, cabbage, fenugreek leaves, mustard leaves and radish leaves is also associated with a reduced risk of gallbladder cancer. Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, bok choy, broccoli and brussel sprouts can reduce your risk of lung cancer. Blue and purples: The antioxidant anthocyanin makes our fruits and veggies blue and purple. It can boost immunity and is beneficial for the health of our cellular membranes, including our blood vessels. Examples: Blueberries, eggplant, beetroot and plums. White and brown: A banana a day can help to reduce your risk of bowel cancer. Examples of white and brown produce include bananas, dates, brown onions, mushrooms and artichokes. We know that one third of all cancers are preventable through simple lifestyle choices like eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight. So why not give colour a spin, serve up something delicious and nutritious, and enjoy your health and happiness! For more information and recipe ideas visit: healthier.qld.gov.au.

theregion Napranum store appoints first ever school trainee

MONICA Sigai (pictured) has become the first school-based trainee to be employed by Island and Cape Retail enterprises in Cape York. Assisted in part by the ‘My Pathway’ training company, Monica has signed a two year traineeship, where she will complete a cer-

tificate II in Retail Operations at Island and Cape’s Napranum store. Monica – who is also currently completing Year 11 at Weipa-based Western Cape College, said she was excited to learn about the workforce. “I am really looking forward to completing my Cert ll in Retail and to learn all the skills and techniques in this workplace,” she said. “I want to experience a real workplace environment, interact with customers, learn new skills to help my career in the future, and complement my business studies course I am doing in school. “My aim is to successfully complete Year 12 at Western Cape College and gain a fulltime job in the future.” Island & Cape Retail Enterprises General Manager Operations Kim Reynolds said their partnership with ‘My Pathway’ will help future youth level employment. “We both thought it was really important to ensure a continuation of up and coming local youth gaining the skills necessary to enter the retail workforce and progress through to management,” said Ms Reynolds. “Monica saw a flyer about the schoolbased apprenticeship scheme at her school, and saw her school career advisor from there. “We have a passion for establishing local people in local jobs, and we can help achieve this by investing in the future, and people like Monica.”

wards those living with cancer. Hailed as a great success – ‘Dry July’ is a campaign which encourages people to give up alcohol for the month – raising funds as they go. Funding towards 2015 proceeds will be extremely beneficial, with a set of new televisions earmarked for the cancer ward at Cairns Hospital. Nicole Gibson, who works as FNQHF’s fundraising co-ordinator, said the proceeds would help improve support for the patients during their stay. “These valuable funds will help improve the support we provide to local adults living with cancer,” she said.

Mareeba to host gold panning championships MAREEBA will host the 2015 North Queensland Miners Association gold panning championships, which will be held at the Mareeba Heritage Centre. Commencing at 9am this Saturday, several competitions will be spread out across the day, ranging from primary school to over 60’s. Don’t fret if you don’t routinely go home with a bag full of loot; all abilities are also accounted for, so everyone can enjoy themselves. If gold panning isn’t your thing, there will be a series of mining and fossicking stores, along with the ever popular ‘sausage sizzle’ station.

Patrols to continue HELICOPTER patrols will be maintained across the Far North in coming months, in a bid for Powerlink Qld to maintain appropriate safety levels of their electricity network. Powerlink Chief Executive Merryn York confirmed similar patrols took place earlier in the year, with the second round of patrols to be conducted in August and September; with weather permitting of course. “The first round of patrols was conducted in the Mackay, Nebo and Whitsunday areas and our specialist crews will now return to complete helicopter inspections in the Townsville, Cardwell, Tully, Cairns and Atherton Tablelands regions,” she said. “Our aim is to be as quick and non-disruptive as we can when completing these patrols,” Ms York said. “We want to minimise any

potential disturbance to local communities near Powerlink’s transmission lines while this essential work is carried out. We appreciate their cooperation and patience.”

LNP questions Government

Palaszczuk

LNP Shadow Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services John Bleiji believes the Palaszczuk Government may be misleading rural firefighters about worker compensation law and entitlements. Mr Bleiji said he believed the proposed Bill tabled by the Palaszczuk Government on the matter has the potential to discriminate certain sectors within the industry. “There are currently two Bills before the Parliament dealing with presumptive legislation for firefighters; one introduced by the LNP and one from the Labor Government,” Mr Bleijie said. “Unfortunately, Labor’s proposed laws will discriminate against our selfless volunteer firefighters, requiring them to attend 150 fires before being covered for contracting one of 12 specified cancers in the course of protecting the community. “Under the LNP’s Private Members Bill, volunteer, part time and full time firefighters will all be covered, without the ridiculous fire quota. “It was downright deceitful for the Palaszczuk Government to leave this out of the information it sent to rural firies. “This tricky move is yet another reason why Queenslanders can’t trust the Palaszczuk Government.”

Kennedy primed for financial injection THE Federal electorate of Kennedy has prepared a consortium, which is hopeful for receiving $150,000 in funding for the region via the ‘Stronger Communities Program’. Members of the team include: John Kremastos, Peter Piccone, Janene Fegen, Glyn Ford, Christine Ihle, Colwyn Parker, Yvonne Tunney and Peta Macrae. Upon the release of the names, sitting member Bob Katter said: “These people will give a local perspective on a broad range of areas. I’m very sorry we can’t put more people on,” Mr Katter said. “These are excellent little grants; we really need them to get small projects off the ground. “It must be emphasised that the committee is an advisory committee, people can’t expect them to deliver the money, they have to ultimately be approved by the Department under very tight guidelines. “We urge people to start putting their thinking caps on, given these are small grants.”

Mareeba Scouts to celebrate 100th anniversary By Justin Fris A significant milestone will arrive this weekend for one of Mareeba’s oldest and proudest community organisations. The Mareeba Scouts – who have been an instrumental component for many across our region – are set to celebrate in style. Over this coming Saturday and Sunday, several hundred people (from far and near) will come together for celebrations in the town centre, Ringers Rest campground and Mareeba’s Scout Den. Saturday morning will see a downtown flag parade commence at 9.30am, which will begin outside Mareeba Beaurepaires. The flag parade will then conclude at Mareeba’s ceno-

taph, where participants will raise the world scout flag. Once completed, focus will turn to Ringers Rest, where a series of exciting activities, lunch and opening parade will take centre stage. All groups in attendance are able to set up camp in the afternoon, although there will be no shower facilities. Mareeba Scouts group leader Glynis Williams said over 200 people had confirmed their places for Saturday evening’s BBQ dinner, with 150 earmarked for the march. For many of the younger members of the groups, the opportunity to sit around the campfire singing songs and having a traditional ‘bush dance’ are all eagerly anticipated. “It should be really exciting and anyone who would like to come along to Sunday’s events at our Scout Den is more than welcome,” Ms Williams added.

Mike Shakes was ecstatic after the national win.

Local store wins big By Justin Fris SUPA IGA Atherton has proven it can compete with the big boys on the national scale, after being awarded the national ‘Supa IGA Meat Department of the Year’ on the Gold Coast recently. Amid a lavish ceremony, Mike Shakes’ Atherton-based store proved yet again it is a cut above in serving quality local produce on the Tablelands. The store was nominated for the national competition after being recognised as Queensland’s ‘Supa IGA Meat Department of the Year’ at the state competition. Award criteria was vast, including: customer service, pride, quality produce, along with overall customer performance.

Mr Shakes said: “We have a fantastic relationship with Atherton meat producers, such as Morganberries, and we pride ourselves on being able to offer shoppers not only the best quality meat but locally sourced products too.” IGA National Council Chairman Ben Ryan said Mr Shakes continued to set a high example for other stores to follow across the country. “Michael Shakes and his experienced team have done an incredible job and this award is testament to their excellence on so many levels,” he said. “In recognising individuals like Michael, we acknowledge the true essence of independent retailing and what it really means to be an IGA retailer.”

PAPER TOWNS

Quentin (Nat Wolff) has long been besotted by his neighbour Margo (Cara Delevingne). But they have drifted apart - until one night when Margo climbs through Quentin's bedroom window, needing his car and his help on her mission to payback her cheating boyfriend. Quentin obliges and has the night of his life. But then Margo disappears and Quentin, together with his good friends Bud (Austin Abrams) and Radar (Justice Smith) plus Radar's girlfriend Angela (Jaz Sinclair) and Bud's dreamgirl Lacey (Halston Sage), embark on a road trip to find her. Review by Louise Keller: Breaking through the comfort barrier is the thrust of this enjoyable coming of age film whose trajectory is a surprise. The screen writing team of Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who also adapted John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, have adapted his bestseller into a superb screenplay, filled with all the nuances of teenage longing, school friendships and a sense of wonder about the world. The two lead performances are superb: Nat Wolff as the impressionable protagonist and Cara Delevinge as the 'special' girl who lives opposite, who believes that sometimes you have to get lost before you find yourself. After a brief prologue in which we learn of the close childhood friendship between Quentin (Wolff, resembling a young Adam Sandler) and Margo (Delevingne), we learn that they have drifted apart, although Q (as Margo calls him) has never stopped being infatuated by her. We get a clear picture of Quentin: he is a bit dorky and a genuine 'nice-guy' who hangs around with his pals Bud (Austin Abrams) and Radar (Justice Smith). They get good grades, have fun and laugh together, but life is pretty predictable. That's where Margo comes in. Margo is the breath of fresh air that makes life sing. The action starts in earnest when Margo climbs through Q's bedroom window one night, in search of an accomplice for her revenge pranks against her cheating boyfriend and complicit best

MAGIC MIKE XXL

Three years have passed since Mike (Channing Tatum) left his life as a stripper at the top of his game. When he meets up with the remaining Kings of Tampa, who are now ready to quit the game too, they decide to join forces and have one last performance at the Strippers' Convention in Myrtle Beach. But there are some interesting whistle stops on the way - in Jacksonville and Savannah, where they meet up with friends - old and new. There are new moves to learn, too.

NOW SHOWING

New this week on Mareeba's Rising Sun big screen is PAPER TOWNS. An excellent coming of age story with several twists along the way. It comes from the same team that had the recent box office success, Fault in Our Stars . The delectable MAGIC MIKE XXL, with Channing Tatum, sizzles for another week, as does the the family fantasy from Disney, ANT–MAN There's also a very special deal this Saturday on the season's biggest family animations. See either MINIONS or INSIDE OUT, for only $5 each, no matter what you age . That's one big bargain, so if you haven't seen either of them, or want to see them again, here's your big chance at low, low prices.

friend. Q tags along; they end up in an empty skyscraper office at night looking down at the night-lights of Orlando, talking and dancing. It's a magical scene and one in which Margo expresses her contempt for the paper town below; with its paper houses and streets. Margo's disappearance prompts Q to begin searching for her - knowing Margo's habit of leaving cryptic clues as to her whereabouts. It's a bit like treasure hunt and Q involves Bud and Radar; no-one knows exactly what they are looking for. There's a sub plot involving Radar and his gorgeous girlfriend Angela (Jaz Sinclair) and another with Bud, his curvaceous fantasy girl Lacey (Halston Sage) and the upcoming prom, which is a big ticket on the calendar. The characters are all well drawn and I like all the extraneous facts like Radar's parents serious hobby of collecting Black Santa dolls. The pay-off comes in the road trip that follows, when all the story strands come together. Wolff, who starred in The Fault in Our Stars (as well as Palo Alto and Grandma) is terrific, bringing the same kind of easy charisma as did Logan Lerman in My One and Only and The Perks of Being a Wallflower). Delevigne is perfectly cast, as the enigmatic, idealist and passionate Margo, who believes that everything is ugly, close up. The ending? Maybe not what you expect but probably better than you could hope for.

AUGUST 7TH - FROM 7PM YOU BE NO COVER CHARGE THE STAR! Jacqui Stephens and Patricia Schafer have put together a quality local theatre production for the Tablelands public.

Quality local production for avid theatre lovers

By Justin Fris

THEATRE goers on the Tablelands are in for a real treat, with the Atherton Performing Arts theatre eagerly finalising their latest showcase: “The Horse and his Boy”. A tale which is complex across several levels – yet incorporates a wide range of ages – has been coordinated superbly by Jacqui Stephens and Patricia Schafer. Several shows will take place over a three week period from August 28 – with both 7pm (Thursday to Saturday) and 2.15pm (Sunday) offered to the general public. Ms Stephens said the cast had been eagerly rehearsing for the show since May, with countless

hours put in by all involved. Ms Schafer added that the pair wanted to praise and highlight the sheer amount of quality work put in for the final product to the public. “What people don’t realise is, you don’t just wake up one day and decide to put on a show and then perform it,” Ms Schafer added. A novel originally penned by C.S Lewis, Ms Stephens said she drew inspiration for the show from her daughter, of which it was her favourite story as a child. If you are a fan of quality local theatre production, then it is highly recommended that you not miss out on one of the events of the year. For all ticket enquiries, please contact the Atherton Performing Arts theatre on 4091 2542.

Mark your calendars – it’s time to unite for Tablelands Relay For Life. Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Cath Slatyer explains.

Tablelands Relay For Life – save the date!

The countdown is on for Tablelands Relay For Life 2015 – and with just over three months to go we’re encouraging locals to unite for the cause. Relay For Life is a well-established and significant event in the community that acts as a place of support and hope for locals affected by cancer. Hope lives in every step we take, every dollar we raise and every pledge we make. This year, Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on November 7-8 at the Atherton Showgrounds. It’s time to grab your friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours – register a team and get into the Relay spirit. For those who haven’t experienced the wonderful event that is Relay – you may be asking, what is Relay For Life all about? Tablelands Relay For Life is an 18hour event involving teams of up to 15 people keeping a baton moving in a relay-style walk or run overnight, all in an effort to raise funds for the one in two Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. At Relay, three special ceremonies are held - the opening cancer survivors lap to celebrate the individual’s journey, the candlelight ceremony to remember loved ones lost to cancer

and a closing ceremony to fight back against cancer. Participants show their support for those affected by cancer by helping them through one of the most difficult times of their life. They make a difference by showing that those touched by the disease are not alone. All funds raised help Cancer Council ensure locals have access to the support and care they need. Whether that is practical support through financial assistance, physical support through the loan of a wig, or emotional support through free counselling. Your support at Relay makes a tangible difference and I cannot urge you enough to help us win the fight against cancer. With more than 1200 Far North Queenslanders affected by cancer each year, now more than ever, we need the support of the community. So what are you waiting for? Get involved in Tablelands Relay For Life and help us make a difference today! To register visit www.relayforlife. org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85. For more information about Cancer Council Queensland, visit: www. cancerqld.org.au or call 13 11 20.

Mareeba Kids Campus were thrilled to be a part of a national campaign to promote environment and good health and wellbeing. Planet Ark ‘National Tree Day’ was Sunday July 26 and it encourages local businesses and councils to join forces and plant a tree. Jeanette Sturiale GM of Mareeba Kids Campus said: “Providing linkages to nature is a part of our planning in the centres and we encourage our children to learn about the benefits of trees. We were honoured that our Mayor, Tom Gilmore, could come and meet the kids to plant the tree. “We look forward to seeing the tree grow and prosper.”

The LAND ‘God’s country’ needs critical attention

Sour blow for Australian citrus INDONESIA has placed a temporary ban on imported Australian citrus – after a shipment of Australian fruit contained several flies. In a blow for local growers across the Far North, the ban applies to several types of fruit – excluding lemons. Widodo Government officials stat-

ed that the ban is only temporary and will be resolved in due course with the Abbott Government. Trade relations between Australia and Indonesia have been strained in recent months, with Indonesia recently culling their live cattle export quarter quota by 250,000.

FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has flagged several concerns within his electorate, during a recent visit to the Gulf of Carpenteria. Describing the region as ‘God’s Country’, Mr Katter said infrastructure issues with water supplies, roads and employment dominated his discussions with local stakeholders. Additionally, he called on the Abbott Government to have a greater say in proceedings, as many council’s within the region lacked large ratepayer power to fund significant projects. “Our towns are grossly short of water and you can’t have a town without a water supply,” he said. “The situation is critical in the Gulf, Normanton, Karumba, Croydon, Forsayth and Georgetown to name a few. And it’s well known that Forsayth had to cart water

in last year. “The water schemes have to be addressed and have to be addressed now. All of these towns have got shovelready projects ready to go. “Every water scheme in Queensland has in the past been overwhelming paid for by Government. To let these little places starve and go short of water is near enough to criminal negligence. “They’re talking about Northern Development, well people are galloping away from these Gulf towns because there’s not even enough water to keep the people here. “And if we abandon the Gulf, do you think the rest of the world is just going to leave this land empty? As sure as the sun rises tomorrow, a people without land will look for a land without people.”

Farmer of the year nominations now open Nominations for the prestigious ‘Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year’ award are now open. President of Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association Joe Moro said: "This award will recognise outstanding innovation and/or exceptional leadership in the tableland horticultural industry. “We’re looking for someone that has found a new way of doing things or really stood out as a leader in the field,” Mr Moro said. The award bears the name of Carmelo “Charlie” Nastasi, the first president of the association, who passed away in 2013. The Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award will be presented at the association’s traditional annual dinner at the Mareeba International Club on Friday, September 4, 2015. Nominations close on August 21 and can be directed to either PO Box 989, Mareeba or aemailed to mdfvga@bigpond.com. For more information, contact Mr Moro on 0418 966 960.

Bianco brothers, Tony and Joe, of Mareeba were awarded the ‘Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year’ award in 2014.

Sale records tumble at Mareeba THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 874 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday, July 28, which was down 626 from the previous sale. Despite the drop in numbers, the day would serve as one of the most memorable days in Mareeba Saleyards history, with two sale records falling. Somewhat unsurprisingly, heavier steers topped the upper echelons of the price scale, with a line of 12 C4 scores topping 254.2c/kg ($1613.11), a saleyard record. Midweight (400-600kg) steers also were plentiful and sold well, with five C4 scores realising to a top of 250.2c/ kg ($1,129.44).

The second record to fall during the morning was in the cow market, with three heavyweight C4 scores topping 233.2c/kg ($1114.05). Heifers had a quieter week, realising 163.2c/kg. Midweights dominated the bull component of the yarding and sold to a top of 199.2c/kg. If you would like to nominate your cattle for any upcoming sale, please contact your local agent or the Mareeba Saleyards on 0439 737 175. Sales commence at 9am on Tuesday, with nominated cattle required by 7pm each Monday night (prior to the sale).

sudoku Ingredients

1 cup olive oil 3 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced 4-5 green onions, sliced thinly 250g feta cheese, crumbled 2-3 teaspoons Greek seasoning fresh baguette, sliced thinly (optional) balsamic vinegar

April 21 to May 21

Method

May 22 to June 21

1. On a large platter drizzle olive oil until you have a thin layer on the entire platter. You may use more or less here depending on your preference. 2. Add the tomatoes, green onions, and feta on top of the olive oil. Sprinkle with the Greek seasoning to taste. 3. With a spoon carefully combine the ingredients. We found that we like a little drizzle of balsamic vinegar on top. If desired, drizzle a little balsamic on top. 4. Serve with warm sliced baguettes for scooping up the dip.

Brisbane Roar to visit Mareeba in September By Justin Fris

MAREEBA will host Australian football royalty on Friday September 18, with A-League side Brisbane Roar conducting a football skills clinic for local children. The Roar – who narrowly went down 2-1 in a recent friendly against English Premier League giant Liverpool – is excited about their trip to the Far North. Community Football Services manager Andy Pitches said designated coaches for the clinic had already been determined, as part of the ‘Roar Active’ program, which is run throughout Qld.

“Last year we engaged 60,000 in our program and that figure will be exceeded this calendar year. The September trip to Mareeba will take in another 8 towns/cities with Mareeba being the last venue,” he said. “Our last visit to Mareeba was in 2014 and we will look at making this an annual trip. “None of our players will be attending this trip as they will be into the regular League season at this point – All coaches that will deliver will be from the Brisbane Roar Active Program Community Team. “We want the children to leave our coaching clinic at Mareeba having learnt new skills whilst having fun playing our beautiful game. “

conditions on offer. The club is excited about its upcoming night meet on Saturday September 26, with the Formula 500’s crew (pictured left) excited about the chance to shine. lights. See results from Sunday below.

Mareeba’s elite to represent Queensland MAREEBA youth soccer duo Tyler Ius and Jemma Morrison both recently attended the Queensland junior state championships (Football), which were held in Brisbane over between July 25 and 28. Tyler was a member of the Peninsula Boys Under 12 team, and Jemma was a member of the Peninsula Girls Under 12 team. Both the boys and girls competition consisted of teams from 11 other regions from across the state: Metropolitan West, Met. North, Northern, Wide Bay, North West, Met. East, Sunshine Coast, Darling Downs, South Coast, Capricornia and South West. Tyler and Jemma impressed the selec-

tors with their speed and ability, and both were instrumental in the success of their teams, with Tyler scoring a hat trick (three goals) in his final game. At the end of the tournament the Queensland State side was named with both Tyler and Jemma being selected in their respective teams. They were each the only members from their Peninsula team to be selected. Both Tyler and Jemma will now travel to Adelaide in November 2015 to compete in the School Sport Australia National Championships which are this year to be part of the Pacific School Games. Several international sides (including China and Macau) will also compete.

EXPRESS sPORT results hockey round up – 1 AugusT, 2015 With only one point separating the U/10 All Stars and Atherton teams at top of the ladder, games have become hotly contested. This week, the All Stars maintained their dominance with a win over the Sharks with Max Williams scoring both goals for the All Stars in the 2-0 win. Atherton - with the help of Adam Keevers - also maintained their dominance with a 4-0 win over Yungaburra. Special mention to Ben, Claire, Lilly and all the Yungaburra team who played great hockey. The U/13 scoreboard also is a close call with the All Stars having the slightest edge over Troopers. In a very tight game Slammers took on a composite U/13 team and came out eventual winners with a 4-2 score with Clem and Lucy scoring two goals apiece for Slammers. The U/18’s continue to great entertainment with all teams playing some great hockey. In a very tight game, where neither side could get the advantage, Jaguars and Danai’s Devils scored a goal aside. The All Stars only just managed to nudge the Voodoos out of a win the scoreline of 3-2 not reflecting the intensity of the game. The Ladies and Vets continue to have a great competition and the C Men competing in the Cairns comp continue to impress. Bulls breakthrough win in Sportscene Cup THE Mareeba United Football Club broke through for a memorable Sportscene Cup victory over Edge Hill United last Wednesday evening at Endeavour Park, romping to a 6-2 win. In one of their more lethal bursts of attacking prowess this season, Alex Srhoj’s men surged to a 3-0 inside the opening 15 minutes. Many hands make light work typically and the victors had plenty of helpers on the scoresheet, with Paul Ruiz helping himself to a tidy hat trick, Robert Pendenza scoring a brace, along with Anthony Mete. Srhoj heralded his side’s ‘complete’ performance on the night and was encouraged by the united effort from his side. “The first half was easily the best half of football we have played all season,” he said. “Ideally, it wasn’t the best preparation when we first arrived, as it was pouring with rain and the boys were freezing cold.” Many football staples (for example, off the ball positioning, one touch play) were executed to near perfection on the night. “The effort off the ball last night was outstanding,” Srhoj added. “Wayne (Wayne Srhoj) put on an absolute clinic and everyone stood with him. Paul Ruiz was excellent and in the midfield, Robert Pendenza was equally as good. “We have now set the bar higher after this performance.”

Focus then returned to the FNQ Premier League last Sunday afternoon, when the Bulls travelled to Tiger Park for a return bout against their cup final opponents. It was a different day, different competition, but same scoreline as the Mareeba Bulls kicked clear with a outstanding second half to post a 6-2 win against the Edge Hill Tigers. The Tigers, looking to rebound after Wednesday nights loss to the Bulls, came out firing and took a 1-0 lead inside the opening five minutes with Daniel Vicars catching Bulls keeper Julian Madrid napping with a sharp free kick at the near post. The Bulls quickly drew level through striker Anthony Mete, before Vicars again put the home side in front. The Bulls, though dominating possession, were unable to find the last touch to break down a resolute Tigers defense, but the pressure mounted and the Bulls where given the opportunity to draw level from the penalty spot just before the break, with Mete duly converting to bring the score level at the break. The message at the break to the Bulls was clear from Bulls coach Alex Srhoj; “Do not panic, focus on the 1% plays, and we are only one touch away from a positive result.” Srhoj’s halftime speech was duly noted, with David Ruiz putting the Bulls in front quickly after the break and two minutes later Mete got his

hatrick to make it 4-2, before striker Paul Ruiz curled in a beauty from 18 yards to make it 5-2 with still 25 minutes to play. Srhoj then rested Mete after five goals in a week and also older Ruiz brother David, but nothing changed as Wayne Srhoj was given the freedom to roam with youngster Ben Stabile moving into the midfield. Tall Italian Leo Cisterni came on for Ruiz and set up Paul Ruiz for his second goal to round off the 6-2 scoreline for the away side. “If not for Fergo (Sam Ferguson) in goal for

SOMETHING has finally clicked for Trevor Cobb’s Mossman/Port Douglas Sharks in the Cairns District Rugby League, as they have scored 108 points in their last two outings. On Saturday night, the Sharks put a brave Atherton Roosters to the sword, with a solid 52-34 victory in Mossman. After the hosts raced to an early 20-0 lead, the visitors added some respectability on the scoreboard as the match progressed. Despite the nature of the defeat, Roosters coach Jamie Blain would have been pleased that several of his men shared the scoring workload.

the Tigers it could have been more, but all credit to the boys we were pushed hard and we had to recover and we did, very well,” said Srhoj. “All credit to the Tigers, they came out prepared to fight and work hard, but we have faith in each other and our football, and we have the belief to get out of any situation we find ourselves in.” The Bulls now sit 10 points clear atop of the FNQ Premier League and now move onto host the Innisfail Cutters at home this Saturday with games starting from 1pm.

Exciting fullback Jacob Rivett (pictured) again performed strongly, along with impressive showings from Waylon Joseph and Dean Howard. Roosters senior official Darryl Day said due to selection issues – several U/18 squad members were given call ups – and will be better for the experience. The Roosters face another away trip this Sunday, when they travel to Jilara Oval and face the Yarrabah Seahawks.

SLIM CDRL finals aspirations for the Mareeba Gladiators are hanging by a thread, after their 44-20 defeat to Cairns Kangaroos last Sunday afternoon at Vico Oval. The loss means the Gladiators will face a virtual elimination final against Southern Suburbs this Saturday night at Davies Park – along with needing Edmonton to drop their game against Ivanhoes on Friday night. Burning pace along the flanks punctuated success for the hosts, who have had a remarkable change in fortune since July. Northern Pride squad member Bradley Stephen led the way for his teammates, who took belief and a 30-0 half-time lead with them to the dressing sheds.

Naturally unhappy with their opening 40 minute output, the visitors restored a bit of respectability on both scoreboard and performance in the second half. Drysdan Hayes continues to improve with every match under his belt, with Dwayne Williams also battling manfully all day. After this loss, the Gladiators no longer have their finals aspirations in their own hands. They will host Suburbs next, who have already sewn up a spot in September. And their task will not get any easier the following week, when they will complete the toughest road trip in the league; against Tully in Tully. Following their match against Ivanhoes, fellow finals contender Edmonton plays Brothers Cairns.

You can trust the team in green By Justin Fris

THE Stingrays may have shed their infamous shade of fluoro, but this has had little impact on their ability to maintain a high level of basketball. Led superbly by Brendan Ebner (pictured) last Thursday evening, the ‘Rays were never seriously tested in their 47-23 win over the Barras. One of several teams who were keen to even up the league – by injecting more youth into their line up – the young ‘Rays were confident and flourished under Ebner’s tutorage. For the Barras, it was another case of excellent heart and endeavour, but the winless streak on their back only continues to mount. The match was initially delayed for 10 minutes, which gave additional time for the crowd to appreciate a shooting showcase. Once the match hit full stride during the first quarter, onlookers witnessed one of the most efficient bursts of shooting brilliance during a Mareeba Basketball League match. In the opening six and a half minutes, the ‘Rays went a perfect 5/5 from the field, 1/1 from

three point land and 2/2 from the stripe, giving them a 15-0 lead. The Barras – who were clearly aghast at the shooting experience presented against them – hastily called a time out. By the end of the quarter, the ‘Rays had gone 8/9 from the field, 1/3 from downtown and 2/2 from their free throws. On the other side of the 21-2 score line, the poor old Barras could only sink 1/8 from the field, which appeared to frustrate them no end. After a stirring address from David Anthony in the huddle, the Barras started the second quarter significantly better. Lochlan Anthony and Clinton Eales began to get better offensive looks and did their best to minimise defensive scoring. The Barras would outscore their opponents for the term. The ‘Rays lost their mojo somewhat during this quarter, only taking six total shots; they did add nine points to their score though.

But with youthful experience and talent at your disposal, consistency can sometimes fade in and out like an out of tuned radio. Ebner had calming words for his youthful teammates during the half time interval and it paid massive dividends. With belief at their backs, the ‘Rays began to revitalise the fluid within their passing game. Tyson Tatti’s movement off the ball paving the way for his teammates. For the Barras, they would endure a horrendous quarter of shooting, going 0/12 from the field, 0/3 from downtown and 0/4 from the free throw line.

Clearly annoyed by this output, the Barras managed to control a lion’s share of possession during the last quarter and steadily improve their performance. In last Tuesday evening’s ladies A-grade competition, the Baiada Steggles maintained their perfect start to the new season with a cruise-filled 75-37 win over the Deadly Mums. Last season’s other grand finalists, the Gummaz, slumped to a 38-22 loss over the Serial Killers; meaning they are still winless in the new season. Matches are held each Thursday evening at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall, on Walsh Street.

Junior basketball commences in Mareeba

THE Atherton Clay Target Gun Club recently held a special function, where they presented a cheque to assist those impacted by the Ravenshoe cafe explosion in June. Club members pictured are Heather Murphy (Treasurer) Maurie Costa (president) John Kidner (Ravenshoe) and Rob Draper(Secretary) who presented the $2000 cheque to Mr Kidner, with shooters from all over the region in attendance.

SUPPORTERS were treated to an excellent display of entertaining basketball, when 12 combined Mareeba boys and girls junior teams played the opening round of the new season. A number of junior players were impressive during fixtures last Thursday and Friday afternoon. The opening round also featured an exciting 32-all draw between Travel Experience and the Amalgamated Pest Combination in the U/18’s division. Trailing by a single point with the full time hooter fast approaching, Sarrah Myrteza converted a free shot for Amalgamated Pests, which allowed the competition points to be shared by both sides. Recently returned from the Australian U/16 Championships, Sarrah

top scored for both sides in the encounter with 13 points. An outstanding shooting display by Tyson Tatti, who scored 30 points, was the telling factor in Sonlia defeating Surfs by 13 points, in the other U/18 fixture. The U/15 division saw QITE and the Mitsubishi Ninjas commence the season on a winning note. There were a number of outstanding performances during these fixtures with Liam Bombardieri, Reef James, Zayd Myrteza, Tristian Cater, Aaron Cagat, Lane Hanush, Dean Gallo and Tyson Brown all playing strongly for their respective sides. With basketball increasing in popularity globally, there has never been a better opportunity to join a team.
