Bob’s big wish
KENNEDY MP Bob Katter has barely had time to savour his stunning election victory as attention now turns to the possibility of a hung parliament. The long-time MP could become kingmaker with increasing doubt over the ability of either Labor or the Coalition being able to form government in their own right. Mr Katter has drawn up an extensive list of demands with the side that agrees to the majority of them getting his support. TURN TO PAGE 9 FOR THE FULL ELECTION WRAP.
Land sale key to jobs boom

A JOBS bonanza is on the horizon for Mareeba if council approves a massive $21 million shopping centre development in the town. But the project, which could begin within a year of council approval, hinges on the purchase of a small block of land. Developer Reedlodge Pty Ltd is anxiously waiting on council approval to purchase an approximate 1100m2 block of land from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM). Council is trustee over the land in question, which was originally reserved for pensioner cottages. While DNRM has the final say on selling the land, it will be influenced by council’s view on the proposed purchase. Backed by a local family, Reedlodge currently owns 12,403m2 of land including the town’s old saw mill site and a section of since-closed rail corridor opposite Mareeba Plaza along Byrnes St. But it needs to purchase the 1100m2 block to provide enough space to house a major supermarket and several retail stores. While reluctant to comment in detail, Reedlodge solicitor Pietro Girgenti confirmed the development in its current form had been in the works for the past six-anda-half years. If approved, it will built in a single stage. “The developer is excited about working with the council to hopefully bring the project to fruition and secure the last piece of the puzzle,” he said. Mr Girgenti said if Reedlodge was successful in purchasing the land, and council green lit their subsequent development application, work would begin within 12 months of approval. CONTINUED Page 5

The team... MAREEBA’S young cowboys and cowgirls were once again the stars of the show at this year’s Junior Cowpokes Competition. Held annually as part of the Mareeba Rodeo Festival, 25 competitors in two different age groups tried to wow the judges with their poise, articulation, personality, interaction and of course, western-themed costumes. MANAGING EDITOR Carl Portella
Mareeba District Rodeo Association secretary Angela Sturgess praised Saturday’s event, which was judged by resident grey nomad travellers at Kerribee Park’s Bronc Bar. “The judges said it did Mareeba proud to have so many young, well-mannered and polite children,” she said. “The kids were all running around happy and up-
beat, it was really nice to see.” Wade Powderham and Kelli Scott were named senior cowpokes with Chace Apps and Shayla Jerome named junior cowpokes for 2016. Raffles, live entertainment, a ute muster and an appearance by popular Cairns mime Danny Simony capped off the fun-filled day.

AN Atherton Kindergarten has been thrust into the national spotlight at a major awards ceremony. C&K Atherton Community Kindy received the Excellence in Safety Leadership Award at the 2016 C&K Excellence and Innovation Awards in Brisbane last month. The award recognises the work of a C&K employee or “early years’ service” who provide consistently high standards of safety awareness and practice. It also recognises the multitude of influences on safety and the dynamic nature in which early years’ services function. The kindergarten has operated for more than 25 years. “We believe children learn through engagement in nature and through risk taking in a safe environment,” said C&K Atherton co-director Nicole Poggioli. “We take out children on regular outings to the local creek and it’s a great opportunity to learn new skills and test their abilities.”

Group continues fight for new pool By Michael Serenc
THE head of a lobby group pushing for a new pool at Ravenshoe remains determined to press ahead with the $3.6 million proposal. Ravenshoe Rural Activities Incorporating Sustainable Energy (RAISE) president Doreen Mortimer said she was undaunted by doubts over the affordability of the pool since the last one was shut in the late 1990s. “There were mums with babies protesting against council about destroying that little pool and they went and did it at 6am in the morning,” Mrs Mortimer said. Contrary to former Herberton Shire councillor Jane Rodwell’s claim last week that the previous council gave RAISE land for a future pool, Mrs Mortimer said the group only received a threeyear lease of land for a potential pool from Tablelands Regional Council in November 2013 after years of lobbying local and state governments. RAISE is lobbying Tablelands Regional Council for a State Government grant which would allow construction of the eight lane, indoor heated pool. Mrs Mortimore, who founded RAISE in 2001, approached council earlier last month for
$19,000 to help fund a $27,000 feasibility study into the pool. The group has already received a $35,000 State Government grant to get pool drawings done. “The council has never had to build this, there has always been the avenue for grants,” Mrs Mortimore said. “If council is concerned about the cost of maintenance, then have it open for the whole year so you can have income coming in.” Mrs Mortimore said she was not interested in compromising on her proposal, believing it was necessary to accommodate more than 600 school children living in the area. “There’s no use doing half a job,” she said. “If they’re going to build it, they need to build for the future…and give the community what it needs.” RAISE also plans to market the pool as an ideal rehabilitation facility for athletes visiting the Far North to compete in major events. Mrs Mortimore said that feature alone had potential to create a fitness, health and wellbeing industry in the town. “All we need to add is accommodation and little Ravenshoe has got a new industry,” she said.

Tourist Trevor Plant wants more leniency over Rocky Creek War Memorial Park’s strict stay limit.
Caravan park gets tough on nomads A GREY nomad has called for more leniency after being forced to move on from a council caravan park. Tourist Trevor Plant pulled in to Rocky Creek War Memorial Park on the afternoon of June 23 on his way through the Tablelands. Mr Plant’s Fiat truck motorhome had a damaged windscreen, and given parts were hard to find, he asked the park’s ranger for leniency over the 72hour stay limit. “I said “We might need a bit of leeway because I’ve got to get a new windscreen,” he recalled. “The ranger said “You’ve got to be out by Monday”.” Mr Plant said he was then forced to drive his unroadworthy vehicle to another caravan park until he had a new windscreen fitted last Wednesday. “I can understand the 72 hour limit, but when you’re in a situation like I was where I couldn’t get
a windscreen until Wednesday, I think they should have bent the rules a little bit,” he said. “It’s not as if the park is tiny…There’s a lot of room there. I think it’s a bit harsh.” Mr Plant said he had made a significant economic contribution during his stay on the Tablelands, spending hundreds while in Mareeba. “We went into town and spent $250 at the grocers, $480 on tyres and another $400 for a windscreen,” he said. “It all adds up when you’re travelling.” Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella said the 72hour limit was introduced more than a decade ago to stop people taking advantage of the free site. “We have to stick by the rules because the gentleman did have the opportunity to stay in a local caravan park,” he said. “We have commercial businesses within the area that must be supported.”
Revvying up for rally Cooktown cleans up COOK Shire Council is inviting local groups and businesses to take advantage of the influx of campervan, motorhome and caravan travellers expected for this year’s RV Rally. The annual event will have a “Go For Gold” theme this year to mark the Olympics, with Cooktown businesses expecting an economic windfall. “Every year our staff ensure the event showcases the best of our region, and that our visitors have the best time here,” said Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott. “As well as that invaluable word of mouth advertising, they spend quite a lot while in town, go-
ing on tours, eating out, stocking up on food and fuel, getting haircuts, going to the mechanics - all those things add up.” Cr Scott said the event was a “great opportunity” for local groups or businesses to gain exposure. “Every year we need entertainment, gift vouchers, daily presentations, workshops, courtesy buses and more,” he said. This year’s rally will be held at the Cooktown Racecourse from August 3 to 7. Council will also need a caterer for a sit down evening meal on August 4. For more info, call 4069 5444 or email mail@cook.qld.gov.au no later than this Friday.
COOKTOWN will have another crack at becoming the state’s tidiest town. Cook Shire Council is set to nominate the Cape York town in the Tidy Towns competition after being named Queensland’s Tidiest Town in 2014. Council Acting Waste Management coordinator Pamela Maher said the awards were judged across numerous categories and celebrated sustainability in regional communities. “It isn’t just about whether a town is visually tidy or not, the awards are focussed on a range of criteria including community spirit,
litter prevention, waste management, energy efficiency, heritage and culture and environmental protection,” she said. “These aren’t just environmentally focused projects, but also those that embrace our community spirit or how our town is viewed by visitors and our unique heritage and culture.” Key to Cooktown’s 2014 win was the work undertaken by community groups, especially the South Cape York Catchments Group. Project submissions must be sent to council by July 18. For more information call 4069 5444 or email mail@cook.qld.gov.au

Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore said council was still considering the land purchase and would make a final decision shortly. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said while local businesses might be concerned about the impact of such a large development, the opportunity was too good to pass up. “There are more benefits than negatives of such a project,” he said.

Aircraft maintenance laws review NEW rules governing small aircraft maintenance, including those on the Tablelands, have had their introduction postponed. Maintenance training organisations and aviation representative groups have pressured the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to undergo a comprehensive review of Part 66 regulations, which cover maintenance personnel licensing.
The issues at play relate to maintenance workforce flexibility, career progression and the workload for maintenance training and registered training organisations. CASA was due to roll out the new laws on Monday but will now wait until it can develop a more progressive maintenance licensing system that will integrate a small aircraft licence.

Firefighters in chemical suits respond to a chemical leak at Mareeba’s TGT Rural store. RIGHT: : Police, fire and ambulance vehicles attended the scene.
We’re open:
Nail blamed for chemical leak
By Michael Serenc
A WAYWARD nail is believed to have been responsible for a chemical leak which caused the emergency shutdown of two Mareeba businesses last week. Emergency services rushed to enforce a 50m exclusion zone last Thursday morning after a 20L container of insecticide was found to have leaked onboard a delivery truck at the TGT Rural store along Reynolds St. About 30 staff from TGT and adjoining business Granite Engineering were forced to stay indoors while firefighters in chemical suits unloaded the truck’s contents and began the decontamination process. No-one was exposed to the chemical. Mareeba Fire Station officer Phillip Miller said a nail sticking through a wooden pallet caused a small puncture in one of the containers carrying the deadly insecticide Lannate-L. “Even though it’s a relatively small quantity, this product is highly flammable
and highly toxic so it can be inhaled, ingested or touch your skin, all of which can be fatal,” he said. “The staff did the right thing. As soon as they opened the truck up and saw they had a spill, they evacuated the immediate area and contacted Triple-0.” Mr Miller said the leaking container was placed into a quarantine drum for disposal while the remaining containers and other products aboard the truck, as well as the truck itself, were decontaminated with bleach before they could be handled again. Pallets which were carrying the products will also be disposed of. “This is a rare incident. I think I was down here about 10 years ago at a similar one,” Mr Miller said. “But it’s a rarity that needs to be dealt with very carefully.” 16 firefighters from Mareeba, Atherton and Cairns attended the scene, along with fire trucks and special response vehicles. Police and paramedics also attended before the area was cleared about 3:45pm.
Confidential Women’s Counselling
TGT general manager Sheldon Mulla praised the response of staff and emergency services to the leak, but said it would be difficult to mandate all suppliers carry plastic pallets to prevent a similar incident happening again. “There are millions of those CHEP pallets out here, there’s really nothing else available to load stock on to,” he said. “They just need to make sure the pallets are in good condition and aren’t going to damage any stock.”

Katter to play hardball after win VICTORIOUS Kennedy MP Bob Katter could once again turn kingmaker if Saturday’s election results in a hung parliament. As vote counting resumed yesterday, it remains unclear if either side has the necessary 76 seats to form government in their own right, forcing them to rely on support from crossbench MPs. Mr Katter, who romped home with more than 60 per cent of the vote after preferences, told The Express he had an extensive list of demands with the side who agreed to the majority of them getting his support. The situation would be a repeat of the 2010 election when Mr Katter and fellow independent MPs Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor were left to decide who would form a minority government. Title deeds for indigenous Australians, more dams, re-regulating electricity prices through a government department and an increase to two million head of cattle in Cape York are some of the main points Mr Katter will go to party powerbrokers with. “I’m wearing blinkers, like I did last time. I’ll put my 20 points down and whoever gets the most ticks, they get the government,” he said. Mr Katter said an increase in the number of cattle from about 150,000 north of Mareeba to more than two million could generate $1.5 billion for the wider area’s economy and establish a small quartering facility for beef exports. The giant increase in cattle would also require a massive irrigation scheme. “That’s what that kind of political power can deliver us,” he said. “Without that power, we were still able to get the live cattle market reopened to Indonesia in 2013, but with
that power, I think we can achieve that goal of two million head of cattle. “Mareeba would boom.” Mr Katter praised his team and voters for electing him on the back of a strident “Australia not for sale” campaign. “We believe in the promise of this country,” he said. “Successive governments of Australia have removed all trade protection…That’s what’s happened to every industry in Australia.” Mr Katter said big wins at polling booths in Edmonton, Mt Isa and Mareeba helped him to get him to get over the line, recording a 9.8 per cent swing in his favour after preferences. Even greater was his popular vote of 40.8 per cent, resulting in an 11.4 per cent swing. Mr Katter’s closest rival, LNP candidate Jonathan Pavetto, polled a disappointing 38 per cent after preferences, with 68 per cent of the total vote counted at the time of going to print. Labor candidate for Kennedy Norm Jacobsen said he was satisfied with how his campaign went, despite coming a distant third with 18.8 per cent of the popular vote. “It’s a very difficult electorate to win, but we did do really well up in the northern areas,” he said. “It was unexpected that Bob would get such a big swing. We knew there was a change on but we didn’t expect it to go that way. “I don’t think we could have done too much different, to be honest, with what we had.” The Mareeba farmer and prison worker said he would consider another tilt at state or federal politics in the future. Mr Pavetto could not be contacted.
Queensland lights up to celebrate NAIDOC Week Key Queensland landmarks from Cairns to Brisbane, including the iconic Story Bridge, have been lit up in the symbolic colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, to herald the start of NAIDOC Week celebrations. Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Curtis Pitt said it was the first time the Story Bridge had been illuminated in recognition of NAIDOC Week. “The ‘Light up Queensland’ program is a highly visible and vibrant way to encourage Queenslanders to join in NAIDOC week celebrations this week, running from July 3-10,” he said. “As part of these celebrations we are lighting up key Queensland landmarks in the NAIDOC colours of red, yellow, green and blue – which were chosen to represent the Aboriginal culture, with green and blue broadly representing the Torres Strait Islander culture. Each year during NAIDOC Week Queensland celebrates the rich and diverse culture of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples – the First Australians. “This year, we want all Queenslanders to connect, contribute and celebrate by participating in their local NAIDOC Week celebrations,” Mr Pitt said. “The theme for 2016, Songlines – The living narrative of our nation, highlights the significant spiritual and cultural connection the many Aboriginal nations and Torres Strait Islander groups have to the knowledge, languages, customs, ceremonies and Lore of their ancestors. “NAIDOC presents us all with an opportunity to learn more about the culture of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people, to get involved in their local communities and to connect with a significant part of our past, present and future. “NAIDOC Week celebrations and community events are a great opportunity for all Queenslanders to come together and share in this wonderful week.” For a full 2016 NAIDOC program including a statewide calendar of events and online resources visit: www.datsip.qld.gov.au/naidoc

theregion Panama to be property bought out THE Australian Banana Grower’s Council (ABGC) is set to buy out a Tully farm in a bid to control the spread of Panama Tropical Race 4. The ABGC signed an conditional sales agreement last week which will enable the eventual close of operations on the only known TR4-affected property in Queensland after it was discovered there in March last year. ABGC chairman Doug Phillips said the council had been working for many months on the strategy, which was seen as the best way to protect the most productive banana region in the country. “93 per cent of Australia’s bananas are grown in north Queensland. It is absolutely vital that we do everything in our power to protect the industry from any further spread of this disease,” he said. “The purchase, and eventual closure of this property will limit the movement of soil, and thus limit the spread of TR4.” The development follows intensive negotiations with the owners of the infected property, the Robsons, and the Federal Government’s Department of Agriculture and Water Resources. The Federal Government has committed one third of the funding, and the ABGC will ask growers to fund the other two thirds via a levy. “Our focus now is to run a national levy ballot to fund TR4 containment and management including our share of the purchase of the infected farm,” he said. “The ABGC will be meeting with banana growers in a series of grower meetings across the country.” The State Government has given $7.3 million to combat Panama disease in this year’s State Budget, including $5.2 million to continue surveillance and containment work undertaken by Biosecurity Queensland.
Farmers urged to get behind rally FAR Northern farmers and producers are being urged to join a rally protesting the State Government’s proposed vegetation laws. Launched by lobby group AgForce in June, the “Fair Laws for
150
Farmers” campaign will hold rallies outside of Labor MPs’ offices this month. That includes a protest outside State Treasurer Curtis Pitt’s office at Gordonvale on July 16 and another the following week outside Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke’s office in Townsville. Grazier and Agforce Far North branch chairman Peter Spies urged landholders to get behind both rallies and make their voices heard about the proposed restrictions on agricultural land clearing. “These vindictive, punitive and perverse laws need to be either withdrawn from parliament or defeated,” he said. “Let’s get this State Government to make laws on science, not emotion.” Mr Spies accused both Labor and the Greens of demonising farmers to appeal to inner-city voters. “Farmers are custodians of their land, most are also environmentalists ,” he said. “They want to leave their land in better condition than when they took over.” Mr Spies said both indigenous and non-indigenous communities, including those on the Cape and Gulf regions, needed agricultural development to generate jobs in an otherwise low socioeconomic area. “These opportunities should not just be afforded to southern areas, that have had centuries of development,” he said. The first Fair Laws for Farmers rally will start at Gordonvale Park at 10am on July 16 before marching on to Mr Pitt’s office along Norman St.
Local small businesses championed A NEW “Small Business Champion” will stand up for Queensland, including Tablelands businesses. IN 120 DAYS
Our campaign “150 Jobs in 120 Days” was launched on 1st March and ended extremely successfully on Tuesday 28th June 2016. We are very proud to announce that we have well and truly more than doubled our target and placed a total of 404 job seekers into employment!
(ASBFEO) Kate Carnell welcomed the announcement. “The more voices we have standing up for small businesses the better,” she said. “Small businesses are the life-blood of our rural and regional communities; when they flourish, the entire community benefits from more jobs and a stronger local economy. “Our job as advocates is to listen to the concerns and ideas of the sector, and develop policies and regulation in consultation with governments – federal, state and local – that create an environment for small businesses to thrive well into the future.”
Entries open for science comp TABLELANDS students hoping to work in the agricultural sector once they finish school are being urged to enter a rural-focused competition. The Business Liaison Association’s (BLA) inaugural Awards for Excellence in Natural Science aims to recognise and reward year 12 students who want to pursue a career in the natural science or agricultural fields. That includes veterinary science, animal studies and agricultural science, agronomy, ecology, plant pathology, entomology, plant breeding/genetics and rural journalism/marketing. “We create opportunities for year 10, 11 and 12 students to help them decide what they would like to do career wise, when they finish school. We run a range of events designed to motivate and inspire students that bring them into contact with various professions and businesses.” said BLA chairwoman Angela Toppin. Two $800 prizes will be awarded along with two runner-up awards of $500 and an encouragement award of $400. Students must have a VHA (A) or a High HA (B) in natural science-orientated subjects like biology, marine studies, science 21 or agricultural science. These results would be based on the predicted Exit Level of Achievement at the end of Year 12. Students should intend to pursue a career in an agricultural related field at tertiary level or with a registered training organisation, and must have indicated on the QTAC form that they intend to do this with verification from their school principal. Two samples (extended written tasks) of student work should be forwarded with a student application form. These samples must be sent with the consent of the student’s school. Examples of work could include essay, research report, experimental report, an etended experimental investigation (EEI) or extended agricultural investigation (EAI). The awards will be presented at the BLA’s annual awards evening on November 30. Entries close on August 31. For more information, contact Jane Baxter on 0417 444 179 or email info@bla. org.au
MINING ARTEFACTS
1. This shaft is obviously European, easily identifiable because Chinese shafts were always round, made so because of their fear of evil spirits hiding in the corners. Many thousands of Chinese were present on the Palmer River Gold Fields. 2. With the Knocker Line device, a two way communication line was established by means of a connected rope suspended from it to the miner at the bottom of the shaft. A sharp pull on the rope set off a loud ‘dong’ that could be heard by both miners at the top and bottom of the shaft, thus allowing simple messages to be sent both ways by a made up code of ‘dongs’.

Big bucks for startup group STARTUP & Innovation Tablelands (ST) will press ahead with two key projects in the region after receiving a $10,000 grant from Tablelands Regional Council (TRC). The grant will be used to provide some seed funding for the national “Future Agro Challenge” competition which ST will be hosting this year and providing additional support to the group’s “Building Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in Regional Australia” program. The program gives ST’s inaugural traineeship team entrepreneurial skills and advice on how to build a sustainable business. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the team of trainees that ST has put together,” ST traineeship trainer Troy Haines said. “A team of 11 is far larger than I dared hope for. But size is not the issue. This is an awesome group: high quality, very diverse, super motivated and capable.” For more information visit, www.StartupTablelands. org or email hello@startuptablelands.org
Treatment plant work begins 3. The Miners Spider, so called because it was attached to the wall of the shaft like a clinging spider. In many cases the candle attached to the spider was the only light they had. 4. The Mazlin Pick named after its inventor who lived on the Tablelands. This pick allowed a miner to carry several sharp pick heads enabling him to replace blunt pick heads whenever necessary. This pick became in common use for most miners.

WORK on Mareeba’s new wastewater treatment plant has begun. Initial site works to establish the construction and site compound areas started last month, with the end result to be a fully refurbished treatment plant. The existing facility is more than 40-years-old and is currently too small to cope with Mareeba’s growing population. The $16 million project is funded through a $6 million grant from the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund, a $1.5 million grant from the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program, and $4 million from the Mareeba Shire Council’s existing reserves and borrowings of $5 million. $9.5m facility gets thumbs up PROGRESS on Lindsay Australia’s new $9.5 million facility in Mareeba has been given the thumbs up by the company’s chairman. John Pressler and the entire Lindsay Australia board visited the site at Mareeba’s industrial park last Tuesday and were visibly impressed with the facility’s potential. The hub is expected to be operational by October. “This is so worth it. We’ve been waiting for quite a long time to be able to expand up here,” said Mr Pressler. “It’s got great potential, a great fu-
ture, we’re well and truly established here already and this really seals the whole concept of where we want to go.” The 22,500m2 site will be kitted out with farm supplies, cold storage facilities, transport bays and much more. “Farmers will have the opportunity to have as good a cold storage and transport facility as anywhere in Australia,” Mr Pressler said. “It will be a wonderful facility and the farmer community will be well served by it.” Mr Pressler said Mareeba was an

Price stable for dairy farmers QUEENSLAND’S peak dairy body has welcomed news that two major milk processers will not lower their farmgate prices paid to dairy producers. The announcement last Friday by milk processors Norco and Lion comes despite further price reductions for southern farmers recently dished out by processor Murray Goulburn. Parmalat’s current price is set in place until December, and their suppliers will receive notification in the coming months for milk payments from January 2017. QDO vice-president Ross McInnes welcomed the announcement. “The campaign encouraging consumers to boycott the $1/L milk and buy branded milk has so far been overwhelmingly successful, but it is by no

means over,” he said. “Dairy farmers in Queensland have been heartened that the public has rallied around local milk producers by doing what they can do best, choosing with their wallets.” “It is important that the community are aware that their choices at the checkout are making a difference.” Mr McInnes said Norco and Lion’s decision was a “vote of long-term confidence in the local industry”. “Given the recent uncertainty and turbulence in the national dairy industry, QDO thank all processors for their continued support of Queensland dairy farmers,” he said. “We encourage everyone to keep buying branded to support farmers.” Lion owns Malanda’s milk factory, which supports about 55 farmers on the Tablelands.

Size is the issue as the BFG enters Buckingham Palace for an audience and breakfast is a hoot as giant quantities of eggs and toast are served. The first half is a little long and the film would benefit by a few nips and tucks, but overall, everything works. There is definitely magic afoot - small and tall - and recommended to audiences of all heights.

Glitz, glamour and bubbles – the biggest fashion event of the year is set to rock Mareeba this Saturday, when the newly refurbished Gateway Hotel plays host to the “Sonlia SS/16” exclusive fashion launch. What promises to be a night like no other, SS16 will showcase the new release of “Spring Summer” racewear fashion from designer duo Liana Hastie and Sonya Alba-Miller. The Mareeba-based sisters label Sonlia has been making waves in the fashion world all across Australia and overseas. Sonlia one off racewear clothing and millinery have recently graced some of Australia's most prestigious racing carnivals. In the past six months alone, Sonlia clients have won multiple fashions on the field awards including wins in New Zealand, the Magic Millions, Stradbroke Day at Eagle Farm; and not to mention the country race meetings held all over Australia. More recently, Liana designed five made-toorder millinery pieces that were sent to the UK for ladies attending Royal Ascot. While Liana is kept busy with her one-off millinery creations, sister Sonya is sewing up a fashion storm in the design room. A dressmaker and designer for more than 15 years, Sonya knows a thing or two about fash-

ion and not just keeping up with the latest trends, but setting new ones. The Sonlia SS16 launch will also showcase other local businesses. Collaborating with Sonlia are Mareeba ladies Tanya Piggott from Park Lane Jewellery and Raylene Srhoj from Intimo. Each Sonlia spring/summer racewear design will be complimented with Park Lane jewels. A feature of the night will be the stunning intimate apparel range from Love Intimo, which will be modelled by the talented female models of Blak Model Management from Cairns and as an added surprise, local discovery, male model Daniel Pasieka, will also grace the catwalk this Saturday night. Derived from an idea after an impromptu photo shoot at the Gateway, the Sonlia team decided it was time to give back to the town where it all began in a farm shed many years ago. “Mareeba is where it all began and is our home – so what better place to hold a launch,” Liana said. “It really will be a showcase of Australian talent with models on the night including local Gracyn Marsterson and Miss World Australia finalist Elyse Miller from Dimbulah, starring in the line-up of beauties to showcase the fashions. "We were so overwhelmed with the designer setting of the Gateway, we decided then and there to put on a show like no other in an establishment that is an event in itself.” Limited tickets are still available ahead of Saturday’s launch. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased through Sonlia. Phone 4092 6933 or email sales@sonlia.com.au.

The team consists of only highly skilled, professional and experienced riders who continually amaze their crowds with spectacular moves, gravity defying trials action and a little comic relief. At the completion of each show the riders will take the time to sign autographs, shake hands and talk with their fans at their truck on site. Ute lovers go full throttle A CLASSIC Aussie vehicle has made its long-awaited return to the Mareeba Rodeo Festival, as revheads flocked to the Ute Muster competition. Back for the first time in five years, 31 drivers were on hand to showcase their pride and joy, vying for glory across seven unique categories at Kerribee Park last Saturday. From four-wheel-drives to the best “chick’s vehicle”, Mareeba District Rodeo Association secretary Angela Sturgess said judges were impressed by the passionate display of motoring pride. “We had our judges go through and they were revving up all the engines,” she said. Ute sound and presentation formed a key part of the judging process. Ms Sturgess said the Ute Muster would be back “bigger and better” next year. All seven winners of the muster have the opportunity to represent North Queensland at the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies’ Sub-Chamber Finals at this year’s Brisbane Ekka in August.

The LAND Minister coy on sedge funding
State Agriculture Minister Leanne Donaldson visited the Tablelands to speak with farmers and producers last week.
No ‘silver bullet’ on Panama fight By Michael Serenc FINDING a viable banana plant resistant to Panama Tropical Race 4 disease could be still years away. Howe Farming Group environmental officer James Howe, whose father Dennis owns a 600ha banana crop at Walkamin, said the few Panama-resistant varieties grown so far were not practical. “Resistant varieties are not marketable. They’re not what the consumers buy,” he said. “They don’t taste nice, travel well or store well, and they might take too long to grow. “There’s lots of factors that determine a suitable banana and being resistant to Tropical Race 4 is just one of many.” Visiting the Howe’s farm last Wednes-
day, Agriculture Minister Leanne Donaldson reaffirmed the latest injection of $7.3 million to combat Panama disease, as announced in the State Budget. That includes $5.2 million to continue surveillance and containment work undertaken by Biosecurity Queensland. The Far North’s banana industry suffered a shock in March last year when a Tully Valley farm became the first in Queensland to test positive for TR4. “There’s been a range of work done with industry, the community, growers and all partners to raise awareness, put up signage and ensure we are doing everything we can to contain the spread of TR4 , where possible, to the one property,” Ms Donaldson said. “The $600 million banana industry is a significant part of the economy and we need

to protect that at all costs.” While welcoming the additional funding, Mr Howe said it was unfortunate it had taken an outbreak of TR4 to spur the government into action. “They’ve pretty much been making it up until this point, but I believe they’ve done a fantastic job in achieving what they have over the past year since the incursion of Panama TR4.” he said. “The fight is not over.” But Mr Howe was quick to point out that valuable knowledge had been gained from the loss of the Northern Territory’s Panamastricken banana industry which enabled a prompt response by Queensland farmers. Ms Donaldson was given a tour of Howe’s farm before inspecting areas infested by weed navua sedge near Atherton later that afternoon.
MUCH-needed funding to eradicate navua sedge remains a talking point despite a ministerial visit to the Tablelands last week. State Agriculture minister Leanne Donaldson remained tight-lipped when asked whether she would release $570,000 worth of funding to combat the devastating weed. “It’s a significant amount of funding and I’ll have ongoing conversations with the council, other ministers’ offices and departments about our response to that,” she said. “With any public funding, I need to be sure that when we are spending taxpayers money, it is in the areas where we can get the best outcomes.” Ms Donaldson was on a two-day tour of the Far North to meet with farmers and producers, seeing the sedge firsthand at a Malanda property last Wednesday afternoon. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth, who accompanied Ms Donaldson on the visit along with several other councillors and stakeholders, said the minister appeared interested to learn more about the weed problem. “She was very receptive and she saw it for herself that if this weed keeps spreading, it’s going to be a catastrophe,” she said. “When sedge is discovered on any property there is a lot of panic and it can cost anywhere from $25,000 to $300,000 to eliminate it. The owner of the Malanda property, environment scientist Dr Geraldine McGuire, was able to brief Ms Donaldson on the scope of the sedge issue. Council wants $570,000 over three years from the State, with the money to be spent on vehicles, quick spray units and the establishment of a dedicated taskforce to eradicate the weed. Mr Knuth said while he wanted funding “two years ago”, Ms Donaldson’s inspection of navua sedge was progress. “Our case is a lot stronger now with her visit,” he said. “We will continue to working with the department of agriculture and the department of main roads to not only look for extra funding but a model of how we can effectively combat sedge.”
suGar rEPOrts MOssMaN MiLL CrushiNG statistiCs WEEk 4 Continued wet weather at Mossman delayed crushing restart from the prior week until Tuesday evening. The factory processed 24,907 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 272 tonnes/hour at 76.6% availability. The major issues for the week revolved around the pan stage throughput with problems processing the material left over from the wet weather stop and vacuum problems on No. 4 pan slowing magma production rates. Shredder hammer tip wear is also significant with the incoming dirt levels and this in turn is causing some processing problems and extra maintenance planning along the milling train. Jannali and Karobean construction begins Buy off the plan – lots now selling The latest land releases ‘Jannali’ and the top of ‘Karobean’ construction is beginning now – with anticipated completion in early 2017. Jannali – meaning “moon”, is another one of our very special stages. Featuring 17 lots in a private cul-de-sac, plus there are six new lots at the top of Karobean Drive (Karobean meaning – “together”). Similar to Bundanoon and Yarrabee, Jannali offers the sense of tranquility not often found so close to town. We are creating a wide selection of lot sizes from 600 up to 1900 square metres. The six new lots at the top of Karobean Drive range from 880m2-1300m2. Lots are selling now and should be ready early 2017. Buying off the plan offers the opportunity to choose the best block. It allows plenty of time to plan and design your home and not paying rates or losing interest on capital is a huge advantage. All of our new stages are located close by Amaroo Medical and the future Village Market Place. To inspect or for more information visit Amaroo Sales Centre. Open 10am to 3pm Tuesday to Saturday. Phone 0409 321 000 or visit www.amarooestate.com.au

Black belts fly high GOOD JOB: Neve Godfrey, 11, is congratulated by Taekwondo Master Rhee Chong Chul on achieving her junior black belt.
IN MEMORY OF HOLLY: Kelly Shephard from Crocodile Station in Laura was awarded the inagural ‘Holly Brown Memorial’ Shield for Barrel Racing 13-16 years. Kelly was presented with the shield by Holly’s parents Warren and Elle Brown at the Laura Rodeo. PHOTO BY PETER ROY.
THREE Tablelands’ martial arts athletes have kicked their way to a black belt after being graded late last month. Mareeba couple Steven and Kelly Jerome achieved their first dan black belt while Dimbulah youngster Neve Godfrey gained her junior black belt during a special session at the Rhee Taekwondo Mareeba Training Centre late last month. The centre’s “Rhee Taekwondo Action Day” featured 47 members and black belt instructors from the discipline’s three training centres at Mareeba, Atherton and Dimbulah. Rhee Taekwondo founder and “father” of the dis-
cipline in Australia, Rhee Chong Chul, was also in attendance. The martial art aims to teach not only self-defence, but fitness, health and discipline. "It is so rewarding, from an instructors perspective, to watch beginners grow in confidence through training,” said Rhee Taekwondo Tablelands secretary Gaye Taylor. “Levels that students didn't think they could achieve when they first started soon become achievable through regular training, focus and perseverance. "Just having a go - is the best way to start."

Bulls dominate play again
Mareeba’s Wayne Srhoj. Photo by Leevi Elmes.
THE Mareeba Bulls have turned on another show of attacking football, trampling over the Edge Hill Tigers 6-0 at Borzi Park on Saturday night. The home side started where they left off in last week’s 5-1 rout over Innisfail, dominating possession to be rewarded early with a deflected own goal giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead inside the first four minutes. Midfielder Wayne Srhoj then got the Bulls second with a left foot strike from 20 yards to go 2-0 up at the break. Mareeba ran riot in the second half, but were unable to put away numerous chances before the flood gates opened when Srhoj got his second goal in the 66th minute. Paul Ruiz and Jaydon Wells followed in the 69th and 80th minutes before another own goal in the 82nd minute finished the 6-0 demolition. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj was pleased with the perfor-
mance, but believed the scoreline did not reflect the intensity of the match. “Though it was 6-0 in the end, it was a tough match, and Edge Hill fought hard and made us work for every inch,” he said. “In the end, our class showed.” Up-and-coming youngster Wells, who stepped in for Steven Cater, showed glimpses of his potential when he was rewarded with a goal. “Jaydon did well, the more he got comfortable, the better he looked and he will be better for the long run,” Srhoj said. “It was great to give his younger brother Bryson a run as well.” The Bulls now move into clear second and host the third placed Southside Comets next weekend at Mareeba. Meanwhile, Mareeba’s reserves turned in a great performance thanks to several youth players brought into the side. Another hat trick to Damian Wildman got the Bulls off to a flyer, Ersen Nina scoring as well as Bryson Wells. The premier ladies turned in one of their best performances of the year, despite going down 3-0 to reigning premiers, Edge Hill. The girls regained their composure to ensure they didn’t leak any further goals in the second half. The Bulls 2nd division mens team continue to lead the pack and now sit eight points clear atop of the table with a 3-1 over the Innisfail Cutters.Goals from Kane Alderton, Anthony Henderson and Damian Wildman were enough to cut down United.
Big week for football mad family IT’S been a week of firsts for Mareeba’s Leporati family. For the first time on Saturday Ronnie Leporati laced up his boots and played alongside his teenage sons, RJ and Liam, for the Mareeba Bulls. Then on Monday Ronnie jetted off to Brazil as the assistant coach of the Under 17 Australian Futsal team. “It’s a great privilege to have been selected as part of the coaching staff for the Australian team,” said Ronnie. “When I got the phone call I was over the moon.” The Australian team is made up of talented players from around the country, including two from
the Cairns region. As usual Australia has been placed in the ‘Group of Death’ with Brazil, Columbia and Belgium. If they can win a game and finish as one of the best third placed teams they will progress to the knockout stage. “But even that will be a difficult task,” Ronnie said. Ronnie Leporati with his sons RJ and “We will play three Liam who all played together for the warm up games against Mareeba Bulls on Saturday. local Brazilian sides prior to the tournament, which There are twelve national will give us an idea of where we teams taking part in the tournaare at.” ment which kicks off on July 13.

Gators’ denied win after last minute try
Gladiators captain/ coach Josh Stowers on Saturday night.
It will be remembered as a lost opportunity for the Gladiators as a 78th minute try allowed Kangaroos to escape Davies Park with the competition points on Saturday night. The Gladiators led 12-0 early, but Kangaroos clawed their way back into the game with three quick tries to lock up the score at 12 all after 30 minutes. Both teams crossed in the minutes before the break and the score remained locked up at 18 all for halftime. The second half was a seesawing affair with both sides failing to capitalise on scoring opportunities. It was Kangaroos who eventually took their chance scoring at the 60th minute and pushing ahead 22-18. A quick reply from the Gladiators again levelled the score at 22 all and lead to some tense moments in the final stages. Just as the match looked to be finishing with a draw, Kangaroos barged over for the winning try and a 28-22
