Tragic accident By Justin Fris
RAVENSHOE has been rocked to the core, after a tragic traffic accident last Tuesday left an entire region in mourning. A utility vehicle crashed into the back of the Serves You Right Cafe, along Grigg Street, causing a stored gas bottle to burst into flames. There are several variables – which could have contributed the uncontrollable nature of the
crash – although these circumstances are still currently unclear; and are being investigated by the various emergency services. It was confirmed that 20 people were inside the cafe at the point of impact; with patients transferred to Atherton, Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville for emergency care. The driver and six others within the cafe remain in a critical condition as we went to print, with sadly one fatality being announced on Fri-

day morning. Other patients have either seen their conditions downgraded or stabilised. Such is the nature of local residents; it didn’t take long for support to arrive for those caught in the disaster. Bystanders grabbed whatever they could to douse the flames and assist until paramedics arrived on the scene. Once news of the event filtered through across the Far North and the state, provisions began to

offer support for the town. Ravenshoe is located within the Tablelands Regional Council jurisdiction, as part of division two. It is overseen by Councillor Shaaron Linwood, who barely stopped to take a breath as she provided support to those who needed it. In a written statement, Cr Linwood said: “This terrible incident has only served to further strengthen the community spirit in Ravenshoe, CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Recognition for local woodturner
MANAGING EDITOR Carl Portella
Local woodturner Jim McConnachie has just returned from Melbourne, where he participated in the Australian woodturning exhibition; and came home with two major awards. The Awards were held at Nunawading on June 6 and 7; and attracted some 900 entrants from across the country. The three judges work on four categories including: choice of timber, turning, finish and design. Jim was successful in winning the “Best of Show” and “Laminated Built Up” in the open category, with the one piece. A regular participant at the awards, Jim began woodturning when he was a kid with his father in 1956. As a TAFE teacher, he also passed on the skills of the trade to many students while exhibiting at

various local events, like the Ravenshoe Festival of the Forrest as well as local shows. “It’s quite difficult teaching younger kids the art, because they have a lot of other thing in their lives that distract them,” he said. “I find that people in their 40s and 50s are more willing to learn.” Jim has sold some of his creations at galleries in Cairns and Port Douglas, but now chooses to just show them. “I quite enjoy all this,” he said. “It keeps me out of the kitchen and I have had the opportunity to meet some of the best wood turners in the world at the various exhibits. “With me, it’s more of an obsession than a hobby; and I thoroughly enjoy the challenge” he said. Look out for Jim’s creations in the upcoming show in your area, as they are sure to catch your eye.

Tragedy rocks tight-knit community From Page 1 “It has drawn everyone even closer together. Now that the initial raw shock is staring to lessen, people are beginning to look at practical ways they can assist those who were impacted.” Cr Linwood added that she was interested in organising a series of benefit concerts – ideally in Mareeba and Ravenshoe – to provide additional support for those affected; and encouraged local artists to contact her. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said: “My thoughts and prayers will continue for the injured and their families over this very difficult time. “I extend special thanks to the members of the community who responded so quickly to assist on the scene. “Also the emergency services personnel and staff at the Atherton hospital and all other hospitals to which patients were transported to for their high quality of care.” Katters Australia Party duo Bob Katter (Federal Member for Kennedy) and Shane Knuth (Member for Dalrymple) also expressed their sadness of the tragedy. Mr Katter said: “We praise the emergency services for having got up there as quickly as they have. “We stand ready to provide any back up that may be necessary from the Federal Parliament and we wait for more information as it becomes available; and pray for all of those involved.” Although not directly a council matter, the TRC has been promoting the use of a counselling service (Ravenshoe Community Centre) which is being offered to those impacted. Additionally, Telstra has ensured all payphones located within the town can be used free of charge to asisst locals at this time.
Community convenes By Justin Fris MEMBERS of the Ravenshoe community gathered in the town’s Festival Hall last Friday morning, where they received further information from each sector of our local emergency services, regarding Tuesday’s tragedy. Each sector was notified within minutes of the crash of its severity; and all responded within minutes, along with support from local volunteers and residents in the vicinity. Acting Superintendent Rolf Straatemeier said: “We received a call shortly after midday and we understand similar calls were made to ambulance services via the 000 emergency line. “From a police perspective, we just tried to support our fellow emergency services personnel as beat as we could.” Acting Superintendent Straatemeier added in a written statement that police would be tabling a report to the coroner; with all the police resources available being utilised towards the investigation. Queensland Ambulance clinical support officer Paul Sweeney paid tribute to the support provided by local residents and volunteers during the ordeal. Ambulance personnel first received a call at 12.05pm – with a local Ravenshoe ambulance officer on the scene within three minutes. “The response from you (the community) in regard to this multicrash incident was unprecedented,” he said. Mr Sweeney said while looking out across the room, he could recognise many faces; faces of individuals who did their upmost to help others on the day.

“Over a period of four hours and 50 minutes, we responded 20 officers to the scene,” he said. “We also had two helicopters available; which came from Cairns and Townsville.” Tablelands Fire inspector Greg Livingstone said: “At 12.05, a call was received by our communications team in Cairns, in regard to a fire and explosion at the Serves You Right Cafe, at Grigg Street, Ravenshoe.” Inspector Livingstone added the vehicle involved in the crash hit a 450kg LPG gas cylinder; upon crashing through the back of the cafe. Fire services were quickly able to extinguish the blaze and earnestly began to ensure that everyone was evacuated. RIGHT: Cr Shaaron Linwood with Acting Superintendent Rolf Straatemeier. Super Saturday for Mt Surprise students By Justin Fris
LOCATED 370km west of Cairns, for what Mt Surprise lacks in population, it makes up for in heart and togetherness. Mt Surprise State School has 16 enthusias-
tic students; with the vast majority regularly making a 150km round trip each day. Due to the nature of their location, fundraising pays a major role for the local area; and the students are calling on your attendance to their very special event. School staff are determined
to realise a dream of sending all students on a trip down to Canberra, to commemorate the 100th year of our ANZACs. Almost every student at the school has never travelled on a commercial aeroplane; with this treat even more unlikely, with things tight-
ening up due to the drought. Beginning at 8am, attendees will be able to browse through several market stalls; before a series of exciting social tennis, cricket and touch footy matches will take centre stage. To donate visit www.gofundme.com/p4fieo

THE Ravenshoe-Gulf Country Community Bank® Branch, has partnered with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank’s philanthropic arm (the Community Enterprise Foundation) to donate $40,000 to the rural fire brigade in Georgetown for communications equipment to be used in natural disaster management. The process, facilitated by Northern Gulf Resource Management Group Ltd (NGRMG), was presented to the Georgetown Rural Fire Brigade during the Etheridge Shire Community Resilience Fair last Friday. NGRMG Operations Manager Richard Musgrove said: “We are not anticipating that
the fair will solve the region’s problems but will, it is hoped, improve community morale and resilience and the capacity to deal with disasters, showing Georgetown and surrounds that the outside world cares and is prepared to help.” The money has gone towards the purchase of two UHF repeaters and rapid deployment aerials, and 12 handheld UHF radios and related firefighting equipment to assist with communication during fires and other emergencies. RCCCEL Chair, Christine Hill, said providing support to the Georgetown Rural Fire Brigade would have long-term benefits for the
entire Gulf Country community and was a perfect project for the company to support. “Over the past few years our thoughts have been with the Gulf Country communities, who have suffered through fire, flood and drought.” “This funding will greatly extend the communications range and address reception issues, currently a serious problem for the combined SES and Rural Fire Brigades during emergencies in the area.” Etheridge Shire Deputy Mayor Ian Tincknell added: “Unfortunately, it often takes a disaster to raise awareness. In smaller communities, helping others is a knee-jerk reaction.”
Alarming trend shows dementia sufferers getting younger AN alarming trend has found that those battling dementia in Australia are getting younger – with one in every 13 cases under the age of 65. In a new campaign dubbed:
‘No Longer a Statistic’, Alzeimers Australia officials are urging that greater awareness of the condition be acknowledged. Currently 4047 Queenslanders under the age of 65 have been di-
agnosed with dementia; with that number tipped to rise by 2020. Dementia is easily one of the most distressing diseases that you can ever witness a loved one go through.
The disease decline is steady, painful and far too often drawn out over several years. Currently, 342,800 live with the disease nationwide, which on trend, will reach 900,000 by 2050.

A true pioneer – Bruce Nastasi By Justin Fris BRUCE Nastasi was never one for receiving accolades; he plied his craft by gritting his teeth and getting the job done. A man at the forefront of the mango industry in Mareeba for several decades, Mr Nastasi was recently recognised by the Australian Mango Industry Association in Darwin; where his ‘Industry Development Award’ was collected on his behalf by John and Debbie Nucifora. Survived by his loving family – Mr Nastasi had a tremendous love of farming from an early age – which was only matched by generosity to others. Mr Nastasi’s daughter Grace spoke of how a successful farming enterprise began with the purchase of a farm in Mutchilba. “They did seed crops for tomatoes, cucumbers and tobacco,” she said. “Dad was one of the first to get out of tobacco before it crumbled. “So dad and Uncle Charlie (who were inseparable as friends) did some research as to whether there could be another industry for local growers, because tobacco was going down. “They did a lot of research; they went to the Philippines, they went everywhere. They found the variety (of mango they liked) and planted the crop.” Sensing that growers could do with further avenues to export their mangoes, Mr Natasi, Charlie and another grower tried a novel approach. “Dad, Charlie and one other grower donated a year’s worth of crop to the Golden Circle cannery,” she said. “(In a bid) to try and open a new industry for mango growers, which was the cannery; where you get your mango juice, sliced mangoes and so on.” Mr Natasi also pioneered the launch of the
Australian mango into Japan; through the establishment of a VHT (Vapour Heat Treatment) machine. At the time, Grace explains, no other farmer had adopted this method; which gave local Mareeba growers another avenue for exporting their quality produce to the world. Success was rightfully earned through a rugged work ethic; with no compromise of cutting corners. “We saw Dad when it was time to eat,” Grace said. “He’d spray all night. I used to get up at 3am as well. Because of the Japanese market, they like the fruit to arrive there absolutely perfect; ready to eat. We just worked, and worked and worked.” Mr Nastasi’s widow, Kay, said her husband was nominated for many awards during his time on the land; but he wasn’t one for accept-
ing those kind of plaudits. But apart from exploring alternatives for expansion, there was a whole other dimension to Mr Nastasi. A man who always defended the rights of fellow growers; and ensuring he had a happy and welcomed nucleus of employees. “Dad was big on respect,” Grace said. “If you worked hard and showed the level of respect, Dad would bend over backwards for you. “I remember Christmases on the farm; and we had all these barracks’ made up for all of the workers. It was Christmas and dad invited all the workers into our house. “So we had Christmas with all walks of life.” Skyrocketing costs to mango production led to a heartbreaking decision by the family to sell the family farm in 2008. Grace urged her father to keep the farm, as she was prepared to stay and operate it. But Mr Nastasi used his ‘seventh sense’ to see ahead. “He saw the costs of boxes going up,” she said. “The cost of freight, the cost of everything. “I think he was thinking of the future (in regard to his family).” Despite leaving the farm, Mr Nastasi never lost his passion for the land; and regularly would provide assistance to local growers who needed it. His family and friends think of him every day. A man who gave so much to everyone he came across; and never compromised on quality. If you (or someone close to you) is having difficulty coping with life’s pressures and needs assistance, please talk to someone about it. In Mareeba, a simple appointment with your local GP or accessing a social counsellor can be the first step in managing your battle. The Nastasi family.

Maintenance works on Kuranda water
New bus terminal for Mareeba travellers
MAREEBA Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore is urging Kuranda residents to reduce their water usage from late-August, as maintanence works commence on the Kuranda Weir. Primarily, this is due to fact the Barron River level will be at an extreme low; and there won’t be sufficient water available to supply the water treatment plant. Mayor Gilmore said: “Stanwell periodically undertakes planned maintenance on its power generation assets. The upcoming works will see maintenance activity at both Kuranda Weir and Barron Gorge Power station. Increased traffic
for short periods may occur along Barron Gorge Road. “The power station will run at full capacity over 48 hours to drain the water stored in Kuranda Weir. “This water will then exit the power station and continue down the Barron River. It is estimated that the weir will take two days to refill to levels appropriate for users to draw water and approximately 1.5 weeks to refill to capacity.” Following the de-water process, all water intake into the power station will cease to allow for necessary maintenance works to be carried out on the penstock.
OPEN TONIGHT!
Mareeba Shire Council has just completed the construction of the new Mareeba Bus terminal in Walsh Street, directly in front of the police station. Funding for the bus stop was obtained through the Commonwealth Government’s long distance bus stop scheme; with a similar one being placed at Koah later in the year. The new terminal will replace the old rundown facility behind the Post Office Centre, after calls were made for its relocation to a more suitable position. Commuters will have access to facilities including water, toilets and more pleasant surroundings amongst the trees of Arnold Park. An undercover awning will also be erected and a Queensland Rail Heritage seat will also be added for comfort. Mayor Tom Gilmore said: “The previous location had very little lighting, with no facilities; and in the back street was not very appealing for travellers.” The facility is now operational.

Buddy benches Charlie Cooper, from Trinity Beach State School, was 9 years old when he came up with the unselfish idea to build a bench for lonely children in his school community. Children could sit on it, and be seen by others and included in their activities and never need to feel lonely again. Charlie gained approval from his School Principal, and succeeded in gaining support from The Cairns Men’s Shed and Bunnings. The Atherton Lionesses were inspired by Charlie’s generosity of spirit, and with the help of the Atherton Men’s Shed, have donated the first of five Buddy Benches dedicated to Charlie, to the Primary Schools in the Atherton Lioness area. They hope that other Lioness Clubs may follow suit for the schools in their area.

The Mareeba Lions and Lionesses have a number of events coming up in June and July. This Saturday, the club will be assisting Cairns Lions to remove and package used hospital beds in Atherton. These beds and other materials (including books) are then transported to Papua New Guinea for distribution. This Sunday is the Family Fun Metrogaine. Here, people will be given a map and clues and have to find their way around the town, locating the nominated points of interest. It is a lot of fun and only takes a few hours. It is a great way to get out of the house, improve fitness and knowledge of the area. All funds raised will be donated to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. On the 27th, the Cairns to Kuranda bike ride comes to town, with about 200 people stopping off at the Heritage Centre for lunch provided by Lions. This is a great event raising money for bush kids. On the same day, the Mareeba clubs will celebrate their changeover of directors with a dinner at the RSL. July of course has the Rodeo, and Christmas in July; both events Lions will be involved with. Kowrowa’s call for clean drinking water By Justin Fris MEMBERS of the Top Kowrowa indigenous community are calling on government stakeholders from all three tiers to help them access clean drinking water. Located 15km west of Kuranda, this close knit community is home to 80 people; including many young children. Water is sourced from a single bore water tank, which also is connected to the Kowrowa Hall. The colour of the water can range from light yellow to red, depending on the time of day. Unemployment organisation Jobfind (who are facilitating renovations of the hall by providing employment opportunities via the ‘Work for the Dole’ program) are forced to bring their
own water; as the quality on-site is virtually undrinkable. Kuranda Justice Group Coordinator Persia Westropp-Hill said members of the community and project were intent on living healthily, especially for the sake of their young children. Several politicians across all tiers of government were contacted for their opinion of the issue, which included: Tom Gilmore (Mareeba Shire Council- Mayor), Craig Crawford (Member for Barron River) and Bob Katter (Federal Member for Kennedy). Mayor Gilmore provided some insight on the matter and said: “The water supply to the Kowrowa community is from a bore by the Queensland Department of Communities; and is therefore not the responsibility of the Mareeba Shire Council.
“The treated water supply from the Kuranda reticulated system extends as far as the Kuranda Community College on Myola Road. “If the Department of Communities wishes for that water supply to be extended to the three communities of Upper Kowrowa, Lower Kowrowa and Mantaka, that can be accommodated; but only if the department is prepared to fund the cost of extension of the pipeline.” After being notified of the case during the week, Mr Crawford said he contacted Leeanne Enoch (Minister for Housing and Public Works) who helped set the wheels in motion for rectifying the situation. He added that a contractor visited the water tank site and conducted sample tests of the water quality; with all parties to be briefed on the findings.
Senior students hit the books

SECONDARY students across the Tablelands are studying up hard, with subject block exams and Queensland Core Skills (QCS) testing on the horizon. Mareeba State High School captains Sam Harris and Helena Kath are two of the 45 students sitting QCS exams in 2015. Principal Jo Soothill said the student preparation for the final year of senior schooling actually began at the tail end of year 11. “The students actually begin their QCS preparation in term 4, of the previous year,” she said. “QCS practice is allocated once a week, with distinct assistance given to students in regard to the three components of the testing.” Along with receiving a booklet of which they can work on from home, students are also able to access past exam papers, which provide examples of questions that may be asked. Study and school provide their own challenges, but juggling part-time employment is

Thank you Queensland On behalf of Cancer Council Queensland, I write to acknowledge the thousands of Queenslanders who took part in this year’s campaign for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. From high teas to mad hatters, this year’s event was an outstanding reflection of Queensland’s generosity and compassion for those affected by cancer. Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your abiding contribution to our work. Without you, we could not continue providing world-leading research and support to the estimated 25,000 Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Your efforts are helping us to save lives and beat cancer. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Prof Jeff Dunn AO
Billy, make your vote count The ABC online has ran an article slamming a land clearing project in Cape York Peninsula and quotes The Wilderness Society frequently. According to The Wilderness Society, they’ve not seen such a large scale project since the Sir Joh era. Well they are spot on with that statement. Finally after decades of having the cape become a football playing field, with the likes of wild rivers, alcohol management and veg management laws [under the Labor regime] which stifled any thought of large scale projects, we have someone who actually wants to invest in the Peninsula. Paul Ryan (of the Olive vale Pastoral Company) is a businessman who could have simply taken this project to another area that would have allowed him to go about his in-

vestment, without the spotlight, simply because he chose to invest in Cape York Peninsula. It is an investment in which he has employed many contractors who buy diesel, parts and pay wages that we are so desperate to have spent here in the Far North. Now we all know that there is absolutely no point in clearing an area such as a rocky outcrop or creek or basically an area that is suitable to grow a pasture crop. But yet, the likes of Deputy Premier Jackie Trad and The Wilderness Society are hell bent on stopping any development that doesn’t fit in with giving our urban friends more high rises and dog parks, so they can walk their pooches every Sunday. This recent spotlight on Olive Vale Station sends a very clear message to any other business here in the Far North who wants to invest. A message that says a deal done with governments who actually encourage investment, means nothing to any Labor/Greens government. However there is hope; Olive Vale sits smack bang right in the middle of the seat of Cook, the seat of the independent, Billy Gordon. Perhaps Mr Gordon could use his crucial voting power to encourage the Deputy Premier to step down from stopping this economic development; instead of voting with the Labor government recently, who gave us a 3.5 per cent increase to our vehicle registrations. Free counselling service My heart goes out to all the people affected by the gas explosion at the ‘Serves you Right Café’ in Ravenshoe last Tuesday.
Thank you to all the amazing locals who responded by providing immediate assistance to the victims, most probably saving their lives. This is the worst mass burns accident in Queensland’s history and the town of Ravenshoe is still in absolute shock. Simply walking past the café is upsetting for me; but for those of you who were injured or witnessed the accident, it must have been shocking. Ravenshoe is going to need time to heal from this disaster and so much assistance will be needed. I know locals are already busy fundraising and doing what they can to assist as they always do. As a small gesture, I would like to offer my services free of charge to anyone who requires emotional support or counselling to recover from this ordeal. This offer is extended to family members, locals and those who were injured; when they are well enough to want to talk. I am a Family Counsellor with 30 years experience. Borzi deserves more credit Now that the smoke has cleared on the deamalgamation of the Mareeba Shire from the Tableland Regional Council, it could be as good a time as any to face a few facts. Firstly the residents of the Mareeba Shire should pay a tribute to Mick Borzi for instigating and leading the fight for de-amalgamation; and carrying it through to the successful end. Mick wasn’t detracted by any of the uninformed comments that came from locals and outsiders; right from the start he knew that the Mareeba Shire could stand alone.

To all of the de-amalgamation detractors that now could be embarrassed by their stance, I say fortunately there were enough people in the Shire that believed in Mick’s strong views; and were not swayed by all of the scare tactics and false-hoods used. I dread to think of the situation the Mareeba Shire would be in now, if the vote had been lost. Present and future generations of the Mareeba Shire are fortunate that Mick Borzi is a resident of the Shire, because it is clear de-amalgamation would not have taken place if he hadn’t started the ball rolling. Mick has often said how good Mareeba Shire has been to him. Well Mick you have repaid that debt many times over with what you have done and are still doing for its resident. Stand proud Mick Borzi. Traditional owners support Olive Vale clearing By William Bensted
An inspection of vegetation clearing at ‘Olive Vale’ station by officers from the Federal Environment Department was concluded; but no official outcome has yet been given. On Wednesday, June 10, department officers spent most of the day flying over the station in a chartered helicopter. Owner of the Laura grazing property, Paul Ryan, said he was quietly confident the inspectors had not found any major issues. “Because we have been totally compliant with the permit conditions,” he said. Unsubstantiated accusations and claims of habitat and vegetation destruction were made last week by Deputy Premier Jackie Trad in State Parliament, who, according to Mr Ryan, had never visited the property. A permit to clear vegetation for high value agriculture was granted on January 20, 2015, during the ‘caretaker’ mode; prior to an imminent election which Ms Trad conceded was quite lawful as the original application had been made in the mid-term of the previous government, which had requested two extensions of time. In a Ministerial statement, Ms Trad told Parliament the clearing of 32,000 hectares was approved for the purpose of high-value agriculture and included a crop, upland rice, which is not currently grown commercially in Queensland. “As part of this review, my acting directorgeneral sought independent advice on three specific matters,” she said. “First, advice was sought from Crown Law about the application of the conventions of caretaker government. “This advice confirms that the caretaker conventions were not contravened. “Second, advice was sought from Mr Greg Vann, a Life Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia, about the decision-making process associated with the development approval, taking into account the requirements of the Sustainable Planning Act and associated policies and guide-
lines. “Mr Vann concluded that the application was processed and decided in accordance with the relevant procedural requirements.” She said the department received conflicting advice from Mr Bill Thompson of Land Resource and Assessment Management Pty Ltd, about the decision-making process associated with the determination that the proposed clearing was for a relevant purpose—in this case, high-value agriculture under section 22A of the Vegetation Management Act. “Mr Thompson has advised that the correct decision from the assessment process should have been that the purpose of the clearing could not have been high-value agriculture.” Amid interjections from LNP members, Ms Trad warned the Opposition: “These are contraventions of the laws implemented by those opposite. Right now, the bulldozers are already clear-felling at Olive Vale; destroying habitat and vegetation that should be preserved,” she said. A Traditional Owner, Elder and Stockman from Laura, Mr Joseph Lee Cheu, said the land being cleared had little use in its present form. “We want the jobs that this farming project will provide and we have no opposition to the clearing; and it won’t harm the environment,” said Mr Lee Cheu. “There are millions of acres of similar land on the Peninsula in reserves and other properties. “Most Traditional Owners support the clearing here, and farming is much better than mining.” Olive Vale station is the Laura district’s largest employer, with an annual payroll of $1 million, directly benefitting the Laura, Cooktown and Hopevale communities. “Our indigenous workforce and payroll will double in six months as we begin farming operations,” Mr Ryan said. “We have begun a school-based apprenticeship scheme with Cooktown High School and a student will start a diesel-fitting course here later this year.”
Olive Vale Owner Paul Ryan, Land Resources Consultant Peter Spies and Traditional Owner Joseph Lee Cheu say the clearing has been done according to the permit conditions.
The Deputy Premier told Parliament now that the former LNP government had approved the clearing; there was limited opportunity for the government to stop it. “For that reason, today, I have written to the Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, under section 69 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act,” Ms Trad said. “If Mr Hunt determines that the clearing now under way is a controlled action, then the Commonwealth has the power to seek a Federal Court injunction to stop the bulldozers.” She said she would be working with the Natural Resources Minister to change Vegetation Management laws to prevent any more development of “high value” farmland. Land Resource consultant Peter Spies said he had been undertaking ongoing soil analysis of the area to be cleared and found the soils to be suitable for sorghum, dry-land rice and pulses with the potential for irrigation.
Although the green element pushed the loss of species and habitat line, Mr Spies said the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry was excited about the proposal. “We will be doing crop varietal trials for forage sorghum and baling it for forage will help drought proof the property and provide a ready source of feed for other properties in dry times,” Mr Spies said. “There is the potential for feedlotting and having a live export depot for the port at Weipa, which would be dependent on the upgrading of the Peninsula Development Road. “There are no threatened animal or plant species and we have developed species recovery plans by mapping all likely habitats. “There is no threat whatsoever to the reef because there will be much less runoff from the almost level farmland than in its natural state”. The Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, has refused to comment about the land clearing.

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS
After a devastating earthquake hits California, a Los Angeles Fire Department rescue-helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) attempt to leave Los Angeles and head to San Francisco to find and rescue their estranged daughter (Alexandra Daddario).
JURASSIC WORLD
A ROYAL NIGHT OUT
SAN ANDREAS, starring Dwayne Johnson and Paul Giamatti, is the new flick on The Rising Sun screen this week. It's an explosive and very entertaining adventure film and much of the production was shot here in Australia. JURASSIC WORLD, the monumental production, that takes over from where JURASSIC PARK left off, continues for a second great week. The enchanting TOMORROWLAND has it's final shows today, whilst the excellent film on the British royal family, A ROYAL NIGHT OUT, starts its final week at the Rising Sun.
May 8, 1945: V-E day. As the whole of London is on the streets to celebrate the official end of World War II in Europe, the two royal princesses Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) and Margaret (Bel Powley) have a royal night out, when they slip out of Buckingham Palace to go dancing at the Ritz – incognito.
Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park (1993), Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor's interest, which backfires horribly.
State of Origin on the big screen GAME 2 of the State of Origin will be screened live on the big screen at the Rising Sun Cinema tonight, Wednesday June 17. The night kicks off at 6.30pm with heaps of promos during the match and it’s free for all. Dinner is also available at the bistro before the big game.

The LAND Katter’s call for Far Northern graziers KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has written to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Defence, calling on them to urgently allow graziers affected by drought the ability to access the Townsville Field Training Area, which spans 200,000 hectares of unharvested land. The move follows similar lobbying by Member for Dalrymple, Shane Knuth, to allow desperate farmers access to the grassed area to feed their starving cattle. Mr Katter has met with Federal Ministers several times over the past year over the issue. “It is now over a year since we started our correspondence trying to get the Government to do the right thing without forcing them to do the right thing,” Mr Katter said. “In my representations on this issue, all of the military personnel I spoke to were positive towards the graziers’ proposal. “It is only the administrative wing who were resistant – those same administrative personnel who don’t have to face up to public opinion or expose their Gov-
ernment to the violent and fully justified criticisms that are now coming. “We have had three straight years of drought. “Neighbouring cattlemen have made their stations available to the army for manoeuvres continuously over the years; they have never asked anything in return or any compensation for their airstrips and roads being used. “As an instructor in the militia through the war years in Indonesia and Vietnam, you endeavour at all times to carry out manoeuvres in real time situations and there is very little land anywhere in Australia where there are not cattle. “There is not a person that is not now considering the Federal Government to be dog in the mangers and people that are totally insensitive to the plight of the suffering of many North Queenslanders. “We would point out to the Government that if the political wing was to intervene here, they would be heroes not only to North Queensland, but also to the soldiers who have been wrongfully held responsible for this decision.” More is sure to follow in the coming weeks.

tendees to immerse themselves in all things agriculture. Applications for the camp opened on June 3 and will officially close on June 17. The yarding of cattle increased significantly last week.
Yarding tops 1000 By Justin Fris THE Express reports agents yarded 1003 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday June 9, which was almost double from the previous yarding. Overall the yarding was split between stores and export cattle; although as always, buyer presence in the laneway played a part in overall prices. Steers again topped the upper echelon of the sale, with a line of six C4’s selling up to 201.2c/kg ($1,065.61). Yearling Steers were also in good numbers, top-

Large block plus creek in Mareeba Here is a block with a difference. Three quarters of an acre in a small subdivision, on the Cairns side. The block is quietly positioned at the start of a cul-de-sac. Fenced on a couple of sides, cleared, flat and ready to build on. What is really special about it is that it has a walk lane that leads to a triangle shape additional area of bushland that is more like a parkland and it is right on the running Cobra creek. You could set yourself up a small private retreat and hide from the world when you feel like it. Let me know if you would like to walk through it.

A GIVING MAN
You gave no one a last farewell, Nor even said goodbye. You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. A million times we will miss you, A million times we will cry, If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place, No one else can fill. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God took you home. Sadly missed by wife Kay, daughters Grace & Brenda, Son-in-laws Chris & Michael, grandchildren Monique, Mariah, Codey, Aston, Brayden & Kye.

Bulls topple Tigers in physical midfield battle By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba United Football Club made a swift return to the top of the FNQ Premier League table, with a labouring 2-0 victory over Edge Hill United last Saturday evening at Borzi Park. Played predominantly in the middle of the park – the Bulls gradually wore down an organised Tigers defence, with a goal in each half from Paul Ruiz and Anthony Mete. Showing they were intent to get a result, the visitors bossed their way around the pitch in the opening few minutes, going close with their first real chance of the match in the 5th minute. A tantalising corner looped its way into a crowded six yard box, before Bulls keeper Julian Madrid was able to punch the ball clear. Madrid had his defenders to thank only two minutes later, when a low driven shot was feverously scuffed away from the goal-line. Once the hosts were able to soak up enough pressure, they began to come to life; and created some quality chances of their own. James Elmes and Anthony Mete were proving to be a real handful for the Tigers defence, with keeper Sam Ferguson regularly called up for duty. Post-match, EHUFC coach John Dillon revealed that Ferguson was suffering back spasms in the warm up, yet opted to play through them; a
true testament to the dedicated and quality footballer he is. Both sides were competing for every ball, which was predominantly housed in midfield. But in the 29th minute, one tackle too many saw emotions temporarily spill over. Antoine Cerveau was tackled on half way by Bulls defender Larry Maggio and instantly objected to the challenge. A mini scuffle ensued, with Maggio falling to the ground. While lying on the ground face down - Cerveau appeared to punch Maggio - but was only given a yellow card by match officials. Both coaches quickly instructed their players to settle down, but the Bulls appeared to be more composed after the turn of events. Home supporters were jumping for joy only three minutes later, when Mete’s creativeness in the box finally proved too much for Ferguson. The home side adopted a more ‘long-ball’ approach during the first half, but changed to a more conventional pass and move style once the game was in their keeping. After the half-time interval, Tigers youngster Adam Richmond showed the Borzi Park crowd the bright future he has in the league. With scintillating pace along the flanks, Richmond asked plenty of questions of the Bulls defence; and on another night, could have set up several goals.
MUFC returned to the top of the FNQ Premier League last Saturday night.
After an enterprising segment of end to end football, the Bulls effectively sealed the three points on the 54th minute mark, after Ruiz was able to trickle home amidst a goalmouth scramble. Still determined to get a result – the dogged visitors continued to break through a miserly Bulls defence – which has only conceded seven league goals all season. MUFC coach Alex Srhoj said he was pleased with his side’s first half; although not so much with the second. “The first 45 was probably better,” he said. “I think because we haven’t played a tough game in about two or three weeks, it took its toll in the second half. “We were a bit far off the pace and defensively, probably not up to the game speed. But in the end, the result is the result; and that’s the main thing. “Now we have got a good run consistently now until the end of the season; and that is exactly how we want it.” Srhoj said he spoke with his team regarding the physical nature of the first half and reminded them about maintaining discipline on the pitch. After a solid showing from the MUFC reserves, Srhoj added that he was pleased with how senior members across all teams were pressing solidly for selection.
Roosters centre Jimmy Nawaibalavu
EHUFC coach John Dillon paid credit to the Bulls, but was pleased at how his men began the game brightly. “We came out over the first 20 minutes and probably had the better of the play,” he said. “We missed a header from four yards out; and just after that, Mareeba really went out on top. “They got their goal, had a few chances and got one. That’s the difference. “You don’t always have to dominate games, but you do have to take opportunities against good sides. And look – to be fair, we were second best for most of tonight. “The scoreline- Mareeba probably could have got a little more, but at the same time, if we had of taken some of our chances, it could have made the game very interesting.” Along with Srhoj - Dillon spoke calmly to his men regarding the first half – and provided some insight into Ferguson’s remarkable evening. “We didn’t actually think he was going to take the field tonight,” he said. “He was having back spasms in the warm up, he then took the knock and still played on. “So he (Ferguson) was exceptional; and yes, Aaron Richmond, who was one of our front two, was excellent. I also though the work-rate of our midfield was exceptional.” The MUFC reserves were victorious 4-1, while the MUFC ladies suffered a 12-0 defeat.
Roosters continue to climb CDRL ladder The Atherton Roosters continued their steady climb up the CDRL ladder with another hard fought away win over Southern Suburbs, at Alley Park Gordonvale, last Sunday. The result puts the Roosters in seventh position overall, just two points from third. The boys lead 12-4 at the break and managed to bring it home with Sylvester Pasai bagging two tries and eventually coming out on top 18-14. This coming weekend the Roosters play hosts to competition heavyweights Tully Tigers, in what will prove to be their biggest test yet. Tully are joint leaders at the top of the table on 20 point with Cairns Brothers. The game will be played at Roosters Stadium Atherton, with the match kicking off at 6pm.

Stingrays end regular season with gritty win By Justin Fris
THE Stingrays will head into their semi final against the Comets with a solid hit-out behind them, after a gritty 53-44 victory over the MBA Deadleys last Thursday night. After being put on notice during the first half – the ‘Rays responded with an excellent third quarter, which broke the spirit of their youthful opponents. The Deadleys had no shortage of opportunities to put the game to bed early on, but their sporadic scoring patterns again let them down. It took less than 30 seconds for the ‘Rays to sink their first points of the night; in contrast, it took the Deadleys nearly half the quarter. But, after controlling several components of the match from the off – the ‘Rays began to lose their way in the key; and the Deadleys responded. After bursting from the blocks and going on a 9-2 run, the Deadleys began to take their opportunities and incredibly, led by a point at quarter time. There was no panic from the ‘Rays during the break, as they have several seasoned campaign-
ers to guide younger members of the squad. Both sides focused on ball retention in the opening exchanges of the second term; with the Rays Tyson Tatti (ball in hand) looks up-court for the Stingrays. only taking four shots in five minutes. with a 44-36 lead, the ‘Rays were keen to control After conceding 13 of 16 points within a 10 the tempo of the game and monster their way to minute period – the ‘Rays offence became quite the rim. stagnate - and needed a quick jump start. It does mean however, that the Devils have set up an intriguing semi-final against the MBA Deadleys, who beat them in a two point thriller only a fortnight ago. In the final fixture of the night, the Comets geared up for their finals preparations with a 5030 win over the winless Barras. Semi-finals will take place tomorrow night, with the Stingrays (1st) and Comets (4th) tipping off at 7pm, with the Red Devils (2nd) vs MBA Deadleys (3rd) played directly after.

Barren away day in Innisfail This Saturday @ Steve Corica oval, Innisfail By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba Gladiators travelled to Innisfail last Saturday and had a day they would like to quickly forget. With the home side intent of keeping their noses in the finals race – they showed no mercy and thrashed the Gladiators 44-0. Prior to the match, there were several changes to the line-up. Despite the heavy defeat, giving younger players an opportunity at the top level is a positive step. Initially there may be some short-term pain; but if the Gladiators coaches can harness this approach, it will eventually
pay off. The loss means that finals hopes are practically extinguished for the Gladiators; but there is still plenty that can be gained from the remainder of the season. Their next test will involve a battle with Ivanhoes on Saturday night, who are also in the mid-table logjam. With points at a premium going into July, they won’t want to leave Mareeba empty handed. It was also a rare hiccup for Tonga Kose’s reserve grade squad, who left on the end of a 42-0 defeat. Abby Hobbler’s U/18’s fell to Innisfail 48-6, while the Malanda/Mareeba Eels were held to a 20all draw by Innisfail earlier in the day.
