Rotary celebrates 70 years in Mareeba
Mareeba Rotary celebrated 70 years in Mareeba on Saturday night, with a birthday party to remember. In their tradition of giving back to the community, they donated more than $28,000 dollars to local organisations. Turn to page 14 for a full run down of the evening.
State-of-the-art school planned for Mareeba Exclusive by Carl Portella Educational consortium, Standard Bearers Academy Holdings, is pleased to announce plans to build a $70 million, state-of-the-art boarding school in Mareeba, for years 5-12. The new non-profit school will be called the Standard Bearers Academy, on account of its mission to educate the leaders of tomorrow to uphold the highest ethical and moral standards. Standard Bearers Academy will provide a broad-based education infused with an Islamic worldview in an inclusive faith centred environment for up to 1200 boys at a time from around Australia. Spokesperson Brenton Gibbs said the Academy, to be located on 96 acres of land at Tinaroo Creek Road, Mareeba, would be a first class educational institution with a particular focus on
farming technology and rural activities in keeping with its location in Queensland’s agricultural heartland. “The Standard Bearers Academy will be a learning community that is inclusive, dynamic and focused towards providing future leaders,” Mr Gibbs said. “Mareeba has been selected partly because of its inspiring natural beauty and also because it provides an ideal location for the agricultural training, sporting and equestrian activities we intend to offer our students.” The school’s facilities will include student accommodation and classrooms, a performing arts complex, multi-faith worship hall, Olympic-sized pool, high performance sports centre, tennis and basketball courts, equestrian centre, 400m tartan athletics competition running track, two sports fields, an orchard and a training farm.
It will also include an on-site Teacher Training College and College for Applied Leadership. Standard Bearers Academy will be informed by an educational philosophy based upon five key principles: internationalism through understanding and appreciation of others; community service and the fore grounding of, compassion, sharing and social justice; environmental stewardship; self-discovery through adventure and sports; and global ethical and moral leadership. The values that the school will seek to inculcate in the students include integrity, quality, compassion, responsibility, hard work and accountability. Mr Gibbs said Standard Bearers Academy would be an active member of the local community, participating in the broader life of the Mareeba Shire. It will also directly employ approximately
80 people, buying large amounts of goods and services from local businesses, and making its state-of-the- art facilities available for other community groups. “The school is a large enterprise and is expected to provide a lot of jobs and economic activity in the local area both during construction and also during our regular operation,” Mr Gibbs said. “It will also function as a drawcard for visitors and schools outside the local area as we are able to host top-level sporting teams and interschool events at our facilities.” Standard Bearers Academy will cater for a culturally and religiously diverse student body. This will include students locally and interstate and from all cultural backgrounds within Australia as well as a percentage of international students. CONTINUED PAGE 9

Multicultural festival receives high praise By Justin Fris
MAREEBA received a ‘Highly Commended’ in 2014’s ‘Premier Cultural Diversity Awards’, which has been warmly received by local organisers. Held on August 30, Mareeba’s Multicultural Festival celebrations started early and celebrated a wealth of cultures in several different ways. Entertainment was varied throughout the day; ranging from traditional indigenous music, to Albanian and Italian performers. Festival Chairman Guliano Cordenos, who has been involved in the festival since its inception in 1999, said the formation of Mareeba’s township is quite unique. “In Mareeba, you have people living here from 64 different nationalities and practising 15 different religions,” he said. “We are also one of the only festivals which change the theme of our event every year.” Member for Cook David Kempton, who presented the award to Mr Cordenos (both pictured), said the result was fitting to all of the volunteers who had put in a fantastic effort. “The award is in recognition of all the hard work the committee undertakes every year,” he said. “Mareeba has a lot of experience in accommodating migrants and much of its post war wealth was contributed by families that settled here and it offers a great lifestyle and employment opportunities.” “It offers a very close community, great lifestyle and employment opportunities.” Mr Cordenos spoke of the fondess for his fellow organisers and volunteers who have made the organising process so enjoyable. “I’ve been Chairman since 1999 and we have never had an argument once,” he said. “In terms of the 2015 festival, like every year, we are aiming for ‘bigger, bigger, bigger.” The Express would like to congratulate Mr Cordenos and his team on the wonderful result.
SMS alerts ensure attendance at St Thomas’s By Justin Fris
ACCOUNT MANAGER Natasha Srhoj

AN exciting trial aimed at improving school attendances is proving a success at St Thomas’s Parish School in Mareeba. The SMS based service is designed to double check the whereabouts of every absent child at St Thomas’s, via the school reception. A text message will be sent to the child’s designated parent/guardian, should they be marked absent or are late to class. Parents are then able to notify school staff in regard to their child’s specific circumstances for the particular day. St Thomas’s Principal Rita Petersen said she was ‘extremely passionate’ about all students and families within the school community and believed this option could ensure the safety of all at the school. “It double checks with parents that if their child is absent, the school has accounted for it,” she said. “Sending notification via SMS is cheaper than individual phone calls, but we are proud of our excellent attendance across the school.” If a parent has previously advised reception staff that their child will be away for the particular day, they will not be sent an SMS from the school. Mrs Petersen also outlined a series of
technology-based initiatives that had been embraced by the St Thomas community- all designed to assist parents during their hectic morning schedules. St Thomas’s have joined the smartphone app ‘Skoolbag’, which can be easily downloaded via the app store. If parents know their child will be late prior to the school day, they are able to send an ‘e-form’ via the app, which provides a full description of why the child is absent. This data is then picked up by school reception staff, who are then able to enter the information into the school’s system. Mrs Petersen believes a ‘discrete’ method was beneficial for children, who may feel a bit intimidated having to walk into a class or reception on their own. Another convenient option for parents is the ‘tuckshop online’ option, where both ‘little lunch’ and ‘big lunch’ orders can be sent from your own kitchen table. Mrs Petersen admitted that although things were extremely busy toward the final weeks of the year, the love for the school community and families always makes her keen to come back each day. “We are keen to offer a wide range of options to assist our families,” she said. “Other schools have used these to great effect and feedback so far has been good.”

A despicable act By Carl Portella A group of Indigenous youths were caught red handed in the act of desecrating numerous graves at the Mareeba cemetery on Friday afternoon. Mayor Tom Gilmore, Councilor Mary Grahame, council worker Shellina McKellar and The Express went to inspect a report of damaged graves; and as the group approached the cemetery by vehicle, the youths were observed throwing pots, ornaments and religious artefacts into graves. Smashing them to pieces with no respect for what they were doing. When Police arrived, they took a 9 year old female youth into custody; three other youths were also identified and information was passed onto Police. At the crime scene, Mayor Tom Gilmore said “I would like to express, in the strongest terms, my disappointment more particularly on behalf of those people whose loved ones are in this cemetery that there is such a show of disrespect for people who have passed and are buried here,” he said. “But secondly, I’m angry at the young people who have perpetrated this because it’s simply beyond the pall. “It’s not what we expect in a community. “We expect at least respect for cemeteries and the people that reside in them. “I would hope that this will be dealt with in the strongest possible terms by the authorities being the Police. “We know now who did it and it’s a terrible shame its considered “fun” to desecrate peoples graves,” Mr. Gilmore said. Councilor Mary Graham, who was a witness to the destruction, added to the sentiment by saying “ It’s a shame that we have people in our society today that do not respect the dead ; and if you don’t respect the dead, then they don’t have respect for the living and I hope the Police deal with the perpetrators to the full extent of the law.” From the writer of this article’s perspective, I believe the parents of these youths should be made aware of where their children are playing; the cemetery is not a playground. Respect works both ways; if you demand respect you must show respect and compassion. My parents harmed no one and did not deserve to have their graves trashed like countless others. On Monday morning, Police informed The Express that seven juveniles were interviewed. Six youths between the ages of five and nine, were given behavioural counselling and one eleven year old was cautioned. This is simply not good enough, parents should be made responsible, Community leaders and elders need to come together and educate youth in what is right and wrong, if five -year-olds are causing such destruction and heart ache for the victims, imagine what they could do at 15.
Register before storm season hits Far North Qld
Regional Queenslanders reliant upon mains powered life support equipment are urged to register with Ergon Energy’s Life Support program as the storm and cyclone season looms. Customer Delivery Manager Mark Biffanti said the program is designed to assist customers who are dependent upon life support equipment, which require a continuoual electricity supply, regardless of their electricity retailer. “There are still genuinely ill people in our communities who are not registered with the program and I urge them to con-
tact Ergon for more information or visit our web site,” he said. “And those who are registered may want to consider updating their contact details.” Ergon currently has 2700 registered life support customers across regional Queensland. Mr Biffanti said Ergon Energy could not always guarantee power supply because of factors beyond its control. “We do everything possible to provide a reliable electricity supply,” he said. “Sometimes unexpected technical issues or situations arise, like strong winds.”

Key stakeholders Mark Matthews (Advance Cairns CEO), LNP Senator Matt Canavan, Advance Cairns Chair Trent Twomey and LNP Senator James McGrath discuss the project
Nullinga Dam support intensifies By Justin Fris QLD LNP Senators Matt Canavan and James McGrath have thrown their public support behind the proposed Nullinga Dam project. They joined KAP leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter, who only days earlier spoke of the copious benefits the dam could bring to the region. In an interview with The Express, Mr Katter said the Nullinga project would create thousands of extra jobs on the Tablelands; which would go hand in hand with expected population growth over coming decades. Advance Cairns CEO Mark Matthews also believed if the project maintained a ‘consolidated’ approach, authorities could get ‘on the front foot’ and ensure water security for our region. Despite several positives, there are some local produce growers who are concerned that construction work could increase their costs annually. Senator Canavan was quick to ease stress for local producers and stated: “In my view, any future federal support for the dam must not go ahead unless there is no net cost to existing growers and irrigators,” he said. The LNP wants to support dams and part of that strategy is to help increase

food production.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association President Joe Moro originally raised local producers’ concerns with The Express on October 29, stating future power and water costs ‘are still very unclear’ and not all local producers may welcome news of the project. When contacted by The Express in regard to recent developments, Mr Moro reaffirmed that the MDFVGA supported the construction of Nullinga Dam, on the condition that it be ‘at no extra cost’ above the current pricing structure from water sourced at Lake Tinaroo. Tableland Canegrowers Manager Bronwyn Dwyer also insisted the water quality from Nullinga would need to be on par with the Barron scheme, with no Barron entitlement holder forced to shift their position. Mr Matthews emphasised that he was keen to build a solid case for the project, based around appropriate market research. Non-negotiable outcomes of this process would include cost analysis, consultation with stakeholders (including traditional land owners) and ensuring the project is sustainably viable longterm. The consultation and research analysis will continue over coming months. The Express will keep readers informed with any new details which may come to hand.
Atherton leads way in disability services By Justin Fris DISABILITY services have been further boosted in Atherton, with MAX employment set to open a brand new Atherton office in 2015. After a lengthy tendering process from CRS Australia (which involved several suitors), MAX’s victory saw offices opened in Dandenong and Geelong (Vic), along with Atherton. Services will begin in Atherton on March 2 2015, which will build on further strides the Tablelands have taken in ensuring inclusive workplaces. MAX Employment Director Deborah Holmwood said she was excited of the new opportunities that will benefit job seekers. “We are excited to have this opportunity to help Ather-
ton job seekers into meaningful, sustainable employment and to work with local employers to prove that disability is not a barrier,” she said. This initiative follows on the excellent inroads being undertaken in the town by Autism Qld, who are providing many opportunities for the community to gain greater understanding of such conditions. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long applauded the decision, stating the benefits will ensure Atherton becomes a hotbed of regional employment. “This will be an opportunity for Tableland job seekers to show that disability is no barrier to gaining meaningful and sustainable employment with local employees,” she said. “There are many levels of disability and I am sure that there are many in our community who would relish the idea of being given a go.”

St Anthony’s Parish School rings in festive season By Justin Fris
DIMBULAH was abuzz with Christmas cheer on Saturday November 15, with St Anthony’s Parish School holding its annual ‘Flavours of Spring’ Christmas fair from 4.30pm. Children weren’t be the only ones counting sleeps until this one; with a solid lineup of entertainment on hand which provided enjoyment for everyone on the Tablelands. For the young (and young at heart) who have saved feverously during the year, kitchen products and sweets were just some of the many items that were snapped up on the day. Adrenaline-fuelled amusements are always popular and this event packed a fair punch. Fair goers took on the bucking bull, along with battling opponents in the arduous gladiator challenge. Several items also went under the hammer for auction, including a Christmas ham and a delightful seafood hamper. Quality entertainment from St Anthony’s students ran parallel with these festivities, with a broad range of artists also performing for the crowd. A noticable attendee was Mareeba Shire Councillor Nipper Brown, who
swapped the boardroom for a DJ turntable for the day. St Anthony’s Principal Scott Whitters praised the work put in by all staff, along with the involvment of the school’s P and F body. “Many of the event volunteers started early in the morning yesterday and are still going as we speak,” he said. As day gradually turned to night, the crowd grew and the happy laughter of children could be heard all around Dimbulah. It truly was a superb event to attend.

THE Australian Tax Office (ATO) is calling on individuals who have undeclared foreign assets to notify them immediately; otherwise financial penalty sanctions could be enforced to those who refuse to comply. ATO officials have instigated ‘Project DO IT’, which encourages people to come forward and voluntarily provide information of undisclosed assets or income.
An occurrence in the ilk of Halley’s Comet, industry experts encourage everyone affected to take advantage of this opportunity. It is designed to only assess income over the past four years, with all concessions and ATO lodgement required by December 19. If you would like to learn about more about ‘Project DO IT’, please contact your local accountant or the ATO via www.ato.gov.au

Autism session answers questions
New school planned for Mareeba
Pictured left: Dr Susan O’Donnell (right) enjoyed the hospitality provided by Carrie de Brueys (left) during her time at the Tableland Community Link Centre The site of the proposed Standard Bearers Academy, in Mareeba
FROM PAGE 1 The student body will be composed of those from the Islamic faith in addition to Christian and other faith traditions. Students from non-faith backgrounds, committed to a safe environment focused on universal values and high moral and ethical standards will also make up the academy. Holdings plans to lodge its Development Application with Mareeba Shire Council before Christmas. It will look to open in 2017 with 200-300 students before progressively expanding to its full capacity. The Academy will follow the Australian National Curriculum and students’ will progress on a study pathway toward the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Also offered will be the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. The Academy will be a learning community that is inclusive, dynamic and focused towards providing the leaders of tomorrow. An Islamic worldview informs a unique teaching methodology which complements a holistic theme-based approach to curriculum with individual classrooms for all key learning areas and subjects.
The school aims to develop holistic young people and nurture their inherent leadership abilities and allow their creativity to flower. Islamic subjects will be offered in after school pastoral care programs for those boarders from an Islamic faith background. Mr Gibbs said that funding for the school would come from local and international donors as well as the usual Government support available to all schools. Standard Bearers Academy will seek to appoint a principal with international standing to establish the school as a standard bearer for independent schools in Australia as well as faith-based education internationally. Mayor Tom Gilmore Said “The Council has had a private briefing from SBA and we are looking forward to the public information session, this is an amazing project that is being proposed by this multicultural organisation and one that will have huge benefits to the region, but it’s very early days” The organisation will hold an information day on Saturday November 22, commencing at 10am, at Crack-aJack Hall, at the Mareeba Bowls club, the whole community is invited to attend.

AUTISM is a major condition that can appear complex to many of us; but through the initiative of Autism Qld, some of these complexities could slowly begin to disappear. The Tableland Community Link Centre in Atherton held a ‘Drop in- Information Session’ on November 14, between 9am and midday. After implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme reaches regional Qld in 2016, Autism Qld will have greater ability to further stretch their resources, which will benefit our region greatly. Facilitated by Autism Qld’s Liaison and Development Officer Dr Susan O’Donnell, the session provided a unique forum for parents to attend and ask questions about autism-related issues. Alternatively, parents were also able to provide feedback on how they believe added resources could improve things for those who have been diagnosed with an autism-based condition (referred to as ASD). Autism is a not always one particular condition; it is a broad spectrum of conditions, which impacts each individual differently. Dr O’Donnell said she had visited a vast range of individuals during her sessions in regional Qld; and the feedback received had been positive. Some individuals with ASD might find it hard to communicate or catch on to social cues. They may also be fond of repetitive action and take every statement literally. No one who is diagnosed with ASD should be shunned or ignored; which is way the importance of sharing ideas of managing autism is so vital for the Tablelands.

‘Deadly Choices’ to benefit local community
Major sport organisations like the Brisbane Broncos and Cairns Taipans have thrown their support behind the ‘Deadly Choices’ program
LOCAL Arukun residents got an idea yesterday how some positive ‘deadly choices’ can breathe further life into their community. Using a play on the popular slang term ‘deadly’ (meaning awesome/cool), the Apunipima Cape York Health Council successfully launched the ‘Deadly Choices’ program into Arukun, which was the last of the communities to pilot the initiative. But these choices are not adrenaline –fuelled; they are necessities such as exercising and eating healthy. The aim of the program is to empower all members of aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities; through several health-based incentives. These include accessing a local healthcare profes-
sional and getting a health check; something that not only benefits your family, but members of the community. Those who had completed a health check prior to May received an added surprise, by being given a scarce ‘Deadly Choices’ T-Shirt. Manager of Men’s Health Bernard David, who is at the forefront of the program said he was excited about Aurukun’s community day. “Health checks are a vital part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” he said. “It helps nip problems in the bud before they start. “Everyone who takes the step to have a Health Check, is improving their chances of living a healthy and longer life.”

Freight forum gets people talking DIGNATORIES from major FNQ industry united on Friday November 7 at a major freight forum. Hosted at the Mareeba RSL, major transport options were discussed by key industry personnel. Member for Cook David Kempton hosted the event, which centred around improved freight efficiency for the region. A need for better access to major southern cities punctuated discussions straight off the bat; with this dialogue continually weaving its way into people’s line of conversation. CSIRO Operations Research Scientist Dr Andrew Higgins was the keynote speaker on the day and left the audience with a lasting impression. Dr Higgins formally announced a new model of software; which incorporates a digital map designed at reducing costs for vehicles. The Hann Highway also featured heavily in talks, with most stakeholders agreeing that severe weather can often leave the road compromised. Also in attendance at the forum were LNP candidate for Kennedy Noelene Ikin and Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Tom Gilmore. It became apparent that regardless of which industry you work in; the importance of reducing cost and maximising transport productivity is everyone’s business. Mr Kempton said the forum was a very ‘useful discussion’ and believed that all major stakeholders were committed toward improving freight access for major carriers toward southern destinations.

Discarded sheets from the hospital are recycled by tearing into usable workshop rags before packaging into clear plastic bags. These workshop rags are now available from FNQ Filter and Parts Byrnes Street Mareeba for $2.75 per bag. Recently Lions and Lioness spent several hours picking up litter from the side of the Kennedy Highway where a hot fire had recently burnt the grass. Although the collection was only in respect of a short distance of less than a kilometre a ute load of rubbish was collected. Disappointingly 27 cigarette butts were collected from this small area. It was obvious that these had been disposed of after the fire had burned through the area. Also disappointingly within days of being cleaned up more litter has been deposited in the area. Now is a good time to clean out the drawers and

Mareeba Rotary celebrates 70 years of giving back Rotarians and guests from the across the region joined in Mareeba Rotary’s 70th Anniversary celebrations on Saturday night, November 15, at the Mareeba United Football Club. Mareeba Rotary threw a birthday party to remember. Like all great birthday’s, there were party games, music, cake and inspirational speeches, but instead of Rotary receiving the gifts, the club gave back more than $28,000 to local organisations. Donations on the night included $1000 to Mareeba PCYC to go towards their new kitchen and $5000 to Mareeba Meals on Wheels, to assist with the purchase of a new vehicle. The largest donation was made to the Mareeba Friends of Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, who received a whopping $22,000. This money will go towards the completion of the new playground at the Mareeba Hospital, in 2015. Charted in 1944, Rotary has come a long way in Mareeba. Originally all men, the first females (Ida Portella and Katrina Mellick), were inducted into the club in 1997, with Katrina being the first female president in 1999. Mareeba is one of the largest clubs in a district that stretches as far as East Timor and over the past 70 years
have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars back into local and worldwide projects. Today Mareeba Rotary is a diverse club. with a nearly even mixture of men and women and youth and experience, with their number one rule of having fun in everything they do. Mareeba Rotary instigated the Mareeba Friends of Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation and for over 20 years, in conjunction with Atherton Rotary, has grown the Rotary FNQ Field Days into a multi-million dollar project – just to name a few. Club historian, Rotarian Cedric Davies, presented Mareeba Rotary president Natasha Srhoj, with the third edition of the ‘Mareeba Rotary History of Past Presidents’ book. Cedric and his team of historians had spent months working on the latest edition of the book to ensure the history of the club is documented for years to come. More than $160 was also raised for mental health on the evening and nearly $1000 for the Mareeba Rotary EarlyAct club at Mareeba State School, to go towards their 2014 project.
Rotarians and guests from across the region enjoyed Mareeba Rotary’s 70th Birthday party.

René and his wife Nelleke, from Crystal caves, made a commitment to local charities last year to donate 10% of local sales back to the community. While the fund is not as affluent as they had hoped, it has not stopped them from dipping into their own pockets by donating a total of $4300 cash, to a variety of charities, including a $1000 donation to Carinya and $600 to the Atherton BMX club. Other organisations include the Maize festival, Torimba, Community Services, Wildcats in Mareeba and St Joseph’s School. Rene is inviting all residents to tour The Crystal Caves for free. This offer is until the end of November and is open to all residents that live within the boundaries of the Tableland Regional Council or Mareeba Shire Council. You will need to present local id upon arrival and allow at least an hour to appreciate what Mother Nature has created and he has collected from all over the world.

Locals paused their typically active lives and recognised those who currently or once put their lives on the line in military service for our country. Sections of Byrnes Street were shut down as a parade drew hundreds of well wishers who greeted those marching with deserved recognition. The Express attended the march and captured a slice of a day which means so much to all Australians.

Hundreds of wellwishers paid tribute to those who have served our country
Rewarding career for Joanne As a proud Indigenous soldier, and mother who has served in the Australian Army for almost two decades, Joanne Clarke (pictured) has had a career many would envy. When Joanne finished high school she was at a loss of what to do; but after hearing her brother’s stories about life in the Army, she knew that she wanted to join. After enlisting as a Supply Coordinator at just 17 years-old, the Atherton local then travelled Australia and experienced a career outside traditional conventions. In 2001, Joanne went to the School of Armour and was qualified as a Crew Commander, where she became the first (and at the time) only female to be Driver and Crew Commander qualified. In 2004, she then transferred Corps to become a Recovery Mechanic. “I was the first and the only female Recovery Mechanic for 10 years, until another female became qualified at the beginning of this year,” she said. “Since I’ve been a Recovery Mechanic, I have never been treated differently because of my gender and to a certain degree, my fellow ‘Recce Mechs’ are proud of the fact that I am
a mother; and that I can still do exactly the same job as them and work the same hours.” At the beginning of 2014, Joanne undertook the most interesting role of her career when she was posted as the Indigenous recruiter with Defence Force Recruiting (DFR) in Townsville. “This role has given me the op-

portunity to influence and guide young Indigenous men and women who want a career within Defence; and it allows me to interact with the Indigenous community here in Townsville,” she said. “I believe that I am in a position where I can make a positive influence to society and this is a responsibility I take very seriously. “The fact that I am an Indigenous female and mother has never been held against me in the past 16 years. I have been given unwavering support from the Army. “Being in the Army has allowed me to be surrounded by interesting and intelligent people who have different views and ideals, but they are all respected and treated equally. A person’s history and background does not define them as a soldier; it is the effort towards work and their attitude that will define them. When I look back on my life, I think ‘wow, 16 years.” The Australian Army has a host of diverse roles available for women who are looking for a rewarding, flexible and challenging career. defencejobs.gov.au/army or call 13 19 01.

Mangoes will be on many shopping lists this Christmas.
Bumper season ahead for mangoes By Justin Fris TABLELANDS food lovers will find it hard to contain their excitement, with a bumper mango season on the horizon. Queensland’s own Pinata Farms have just reaped the benefits of an initial crop of their Honey Gold mangoes; with record numbers anticipated over the coming months. Pinata Farms Managing Director Gavin Scurr anticipates his organisation will distribute over 450,000 trays will be sent to Australian marketplaces between November and March in the New Year.
This would be an overall production increase of 33% from the same time in 2013. Mango picking is seasonal; currently fruit being picked in the Northern Territory (Katherine etc) are first in line into people’s shopping bags. Mr Scurr said Qld would produce 60% of all Honey Gold mangoes which would be sold nationwide in time for the festive season. The mangoes in question weigh roughly 600g and are highly regarded by most fruit and vegetable producers.

THE Tablelands should remain vigilant of blue-green algae (BGA) as the weather warms up, as authorities prepare for the festive period. Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson), an ex-NYPD cop, now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside the law. When Scudder reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker Kenny Kristo (Dan Stevens) hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered his wife, the PI learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime...nor will it be the last. Blurring the lines between right and wrong, Scudder races to track them through the backstreets of New York City before they kill again.

Review by Louise Keller: Conceptually brilliant, Christopher Nolan's epic sci-fi drama is all about time. Time - as the world's most valuable commodity, and in short supply - like the Earth's food. But it is also the enemy: every hour in the new galaxy beyond the three dimensional wormhole is the equivalent of 7 years. Agitating the boundaries of science with fantasy, Nolan's vision is hugely ambitious, like the film's near 3 hour running time, enabling total immersion. With its intellectually stimulating ideas and profound emotional ballast, Interstellar makes a solid impact, albeit without the Wow Factor. The early scenes firmly establish the characters and reality in which Matthew McConnaughey's former engineer and NASA test pilot Cooper lives on a remote corn farm with his two young children and father-in-law (John Lithgow). Ten year old Murph (Mackenzie Foy, excellent) is the apple of her father's eye with the same scientific mind and adventurous spirit. Jessica Chastain assumes the role as she grows up - Murph's resentment against her father for 'deserting' her is an ongoing theme. Goggles and masks are regularly used against the frequent dense dust storms. The curious notion of ghosts and gravitational anomalies lead Cooper and Murph to a hidden NASA headquarters, run by Michael Caine's Professor Brand, who confesses to not being afraid of death, but of time. He repeatedly quotes Dylan Thomas' poem 'Do not go gentle into that good night; Rage, rage against the dying light'. Plan A will save the world; Plan B offers another alternative. After a riveting rocket-launch scene that gets the space adventure underway, along with weightlessness, there is a sense of timelessness - enhanced by Hans Zimmer's bewitching score whose melody line rises slowly and gradually in semi-tones. Absolute honesty is not deemed as the safest way to communicate in space - 90% truth seems to hit the mark as Cooper (as pilot), Brand's strong-willed scientist daughter Amelia (Anne Hathaway), co-pilot Doyle (Wes Bentley), astrophysicist Romilly (David Gyasi) and the spaceship's humour-endowed robot TARS (voice of Bill Irwin) find themselves together in close quarters.

Ingredients 2 cups granulated sugar
April 21 to May 21
12 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced into cubes
Method 1. In a semi-deep non-stick pot, heat sugar over medium high heat, stirring often. The sugar will soon start to clump together. The sugar will soon start to break down into a liquid and you’ll want to switch to a whisk to get rid of the clumps. 2. Once the sugar is in liquid form, you’ll want to continue stirring and heating it up to 350 degrees. Once it’s hit 350 degrees, carefully add the butter. The mixture will hiss and splatter a bit. Continue stirring until all the butter has melted.

Don’t let someone take the credit for a job you did. Be courteous if you wish to avoid major delays. Try not to be too harsh with loved ones; there will always be two sides to an Issue. June 22 to July 22 Cancer
3. Once the butter has melted, CAREFULLY add the heavy cream. Since the heavy cream will be cold, your mixture will bubble and splatter a bit as well. Stir the mixture then let boil for 3 minutes.

Difficulties with children will surface if you try to break a promise you made. Be aware of any deception on the part of those you deal with. Coworkers may not be completely honest with you; try not to rely on help from others. Finish projects that have been hanging over your head. You’ll feel much better when your slate is clean again. Don’t be afraid to say what’s on your mind. You need to be careful not to make promises that you can’t fulfill.

Ford motors toward representative captaincy By Justin Fris
Mareeba pace bowler Lachie Ford. Photo Peter Roy
IMPRESSIVE local pace bowler Lachie Ford has taken his game to a whole new level this season at the Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club. Despite only being 14 years old, Lachie has become a regular in the seniors; and his form has been duly recognised by representative selectors. In the coming month, he will captain both the FNQ Peninsula (school-based) and CFN (clubbased) sides at their respective state championships. Both of these achievements are a far cry from when Lachie was only seven years old and he hated cricket. “I remember the first time I went down and I absolutely hated it,” he said. “But my mum took me down again the following year and I remember absolutely falling in love with the game.” Following in the footsteps of his idol Mitchell Johnson, Lachie’s de-
sire to perfect his craft is renowned in local cricketing circles. He has his own cricket net at home in the backyard and regularly works on his technique for hours with his Dad. Not a school morning goes by without those stumps having at least 10 deliveries hurled at them. With the seniors firmly in his corner, Lachie has been able to open a whole new education on the game this year. Playing with older men has reduced his overthinking, particular when he is at the crease batting. “I’ve learned a lot from ‘Painey’ (Brendan Payne) in how he sets creative fields or tries something out of the ordinary,” he said. “These are things I’ll try during my captaincy at the carnivals.” Club President Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams said Lachie was a credit to the club, who had received an excellent upbringing from his parents. “Lachie’s always been a well mannered fella, who’s learned all his good habits from his family,” he
said. “The senior guys always make him feel welcome when he gets to play for us.” The Ford’s are no strangers to regional Qld roads, clocking up thousands of miles in order for Lachie to strike fear into batsmen. This level of support is not lost on Lachie, who was keen to acknowledge all of people who have helped him along so far in his career. “I’d like to thank ‘Bomber’ as he was my first coach getting me into cricket,” he said. “Along with my parents and teammates, I’d like to thank my school teacher Mr Raso, who has helped me with my bowling action at school.” Lachie’s enthusiasm for education doesn’t end on the cricket field. A dedicated student, he puts his studies before cricket and would like to be a sport scientist one day. The Express will keep readers updated on how FNQ travel at both upcoming carnivals in the coming month.

ATHERTON youngster Hayden Lee (pictured) has received the ultimate compliment ahead of the festive season. After a stellar season, the talented youngster has successfully qualified for the ‘Greg Norman Junior Masters’, which will be held between December 13-17. The first three rounds of the tournament will be held at two ‘Palmer’ Gold Coast courses, with the final round taking
place in Coolum on the Sunshine Coast. Lee’s ability is the envy of many; he plays off a handicap of 12 and is ensuring key officials keep tabs on his progress. After only taking up golf five years ago, Lee is now entrenched as a member of Atherton Golf Club’s B-Team pennant side. The Express would like to wish Hayden all the best in his trip down south and will keep everyone updated on his fortunes at the tournament.
Bulls keep rivals on notice By Justin Fris
MAREEBA Bulls President/Premier Mens Coach Alex Srhoj is determined to ensure Mareeba remains a football hotbed; by investing further resources into the club’s future. While some clubs may be content with a stellar championship era over several seasons, Srhoj isn’t content to sit back and wait for further magic to occur. Any football official will tell you defending a championship is extremely difficult; the opposition’s hunger grows over pre-season and title winning sides need to consistently update their blueprint.
After an exhaustive 10 day coaching workshop, MUFC now holds a dual Senior/Youth C licensed coach in their ranks; with the benefits for local footballers aplenty. Srhoj said although the process was ‘intense’; he welcomes the opportunity to give back to the local community. “It was a pretty intense 10 days, close to 10 hours a day of practical and theory work,” he said. “It was a lot to take in, but most importantly now, we have process to offer all our coaches to make sure across the entire club, we are working as one and towards giving every child in the club the same opportunities.”

Anne Amesbury with her competition winning horse, “Angel”
By Justin Fris WORKING Equitation FNQ held their final competition for 2014 at the Mareeba Pony Club grounds on November 8 and 9, with volunteers turning the final event into something truly special. WEFNQ President Anne Amesbury (who won the competition overall with 17.625 points) said the profile of local their local competitions would not be where it is if not for the hard work of their loyal volunteer base. “I would really like to thank all volunteers for their hard work,” she said. “SES Kuranda also provided fantastic catering to all who attended.” The competition was hotly contested throughout the weekend, with Kerrie Jaszcyzyszyn finishing 2nd with 17.125 points. Ms Amesbury explained the complexities of the competition; 37 riders took place in three separate
disciplines, all completed with music in the background. “The first discipline focuses on classical training,” she said. “The other two disciplines focus more on precision (managing obstacles) and speed.” Each level of experience has its own set of unique challenges, with movement difficulty increasing each time the rider advances. Ms Amesbury also revealed that horsemanship also played a pivotal role in achieving a positive result in any competition. “It is important to develop a good relationship with your horse over several years, as they are your partner after all,” she said. “There are certain natural horsemanship techniques which can ensure that you both can work in harmony.” As the profile of equestrian increases across the Tablelands, the level of competition should only continue to intensify in 2015.

The lives of local sport administrators By Justin Fris
IT’s 8.30pm on a Thursday night in mid-July. You are tired after a long day at work. Thoughts of dinner and family enter your mind as you gaze across a boardroom table. Competition officials inform you on new changes for the upcoming finals series. Before you call it a night, you need to table an email to all committee members in regard to the meeting. You get into bed well past 10pm, with a million ‘what if’ situations buzzing in your mind. Welcome to the life of a local sport administrator, who puts the hard yards in so you can enjoy matchday each weekend. Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club President Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams is one of those sporting identities that keep local sport turning in our region. Along with his presidential duties, Adams spends up to 15 hours per week as the club’s groundsmen, perfecting the pitch for play. “The club has only one mower and yet we play at two venues (Borzi Park and Kerribee Park),” he said. “I have to transport the mower between both and the rain often dictates when this can be done.” Along with a dedicated committee who ensure all paperwork is completed by night, Adams is thankful for a large number of parent volunteers, who help the club out when required. In Australia, the ratio of paid sport administrators to volunteers is 1:15. All local sport administrators not only successfully hold down employment, they add additional employment-like hours to their lives, ensuring their clubs run smoothly. Mareeba United Football Club President Alex Srhoj also proves that versatility can benefit a local sporting club. Srhoj, who works as a full-time real estate agent, also manages to weave in coaching and presidential commitments into his hectic weekly schedule. Typically, during the season, he is at the club most nights after work ensuring that members and supporters are treated to a quality outing at Borzi Park. “Time management is obviously very important,” he said. “Many of our volunteers are given dedicated roles, which sees them complete 10-20 hours a week helping out, depending if we are playing home or away.”
If you need further testament on how strenuous managing home fixtures can be, consider the workload of Atherton Roosters President, Darryl Day. Arriving at Roosters Stadium around 7.30am for home games, Day ensures all food and volunteers are set for distribution and the ground is set up for junior grade matches. “With first grade playing night games here, matches don’t end until around 9pm,” he said. “When you add in post match functions, I don’t leave the club till around midnight, which makes for a 17 hour shift.” Mareeba Netball Association President Connie Martens said many netball volunteers often complete the club’s shopping needs during their own standard shopping time. Even in the off-season, Martens and her team are working hard on a Saturday; coordinating planning meetings for the 2015 season. It’s a juggling act: MUFC President Alex Srhoj is one of many local adminIf you are a Club President like Adams, istrators who push themselves into ensuring a positive gameday experiDay, Martens or Srhoj, you are effectively on ence for us all call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. any issues that may arise and enforce order if guidelines are broImperative issues like coaching (ensuring all coaches have a blue card check), venue management (making ken. Time denies outright victory at Kerribee Park
‘Faster, faster, faster’ By Justin Fris
PINT sized athlete Toby Brown has enjoyed one of the most successful sporting years in Tablelands sporting history. In both athletics and swimming; Toby has shattered more records than a disenchanted DJ after a long night. He has broken eight shot-put records at the Tablelands Athletic Centre (some which stood for 20 years) in recent times, along with eight swimming records (some which stood up to 30 years). Along with devoted mother Rikkilee, the determined 10 year old looks set for further success in 2015, with further records in his sights. He is set to compete at next year’s state championships in four sports, but it is shot-put where people have looked on in awe. With a 2kg ball, Toby left officials stunned after putting 9.95m in a recent victory. Not content to sit back, Toby is already eying off further shot put records, albeit with a 3kg ball. In sport, you come across statistics every day. But some simply leap off the page and demand exposure. Consider some of Toby’s recent record breaking swims: • 100m Freestyle (1min, 31 sec- shaved 15 seconds off previous record) • 200m Freestyle (3min, 53 sec- shaved 37 seconds off) • 800m Freestyle (14min, 32 sec- shaved 2min,

23 seconds off) • 100m Backstroke (1min, 44 sec- shaved 21 seconds off) Even if he is having an off day, Toby’s will to push himself further, more often than not holds him in good stead. “In my head, I just tell myself ‘faster, faster, faster’,” he said. “I also have a great relationship with other competitors and have made many friends out of sport.” As we know, there is a whole different side to junior athletics. The cost of attending regional and state events are premium at best, something which Rikkilee needs to incorporate in her weekly budget. “Most of my wages go toward travelling with Toby to athletics and swimming carnivals,” she said. This dedication alone is not lost on Toby, who is quick to acknowledge many of people who have helped his sporting career start so brightly, including his swimming coaches (Elena McDermott and Bridgette Fabris).

By Justin Fris TIME proved the ultimate master for both the Mareeba Bandits and United, who both dominated different aspects of their two-day fixture at Kerribee Park. Despite the Bandits (162, off 56 overs) pocketing another 1st innings based victory, they were forced home every inch by the visitors (5/109 in their 2nd innings, off 22 overs) who loosened up and played some stylish shots amid a lulling breeze. Resuming on 3/43, the hosts put on 50 runs before a series of wickets negated the positive start to the day. Cam McPherson topped scored with 58, with Luke Lambourne adding a handy 29. With the tail needing some instruction in wagging, Brett Brewer took the lead and made an enterprising 23 off 31 balls.
United’s Rob Cuda single handily ripped through the Bandits’ middle order and tail, snaring 7/58 (24 overs) and leaving the hosts with something to think about during the innings break. After initially stumbling to 2/22 off six overs, United duo Jake Murphy and Cam Martin took control in the middle and ensured the home side would be denied any bonus points. With a solid rearguard frustrating the bowling attack, the match petered somewhat in the final half hour; but no one could deny Cam Martin’s fine innings of 50 (off as many deliveries). Local supporters would have been impressed by the efforts of Brett Girganti and Rowan Foxwell, who both showed plenty of promise during their spells.
