Locally owned and proudly independent
Coming together for the love of rugby league By Justin Fris RUGBY league was the big winner of the day on Saturday, with communities from all over Far North Queensland participating in the PCYC Cup. On a beautiful day for rugby league, the passion on the sidelines was only bettered by the quality of talent on the field. Even more remarkable, some of the teams are unable to play regularly, due to a lack of transportation options. Although struggling in the U/17’s boys division, Mareeba locals were ecstatic, after the U/13 girls ran out 4-0 winners over Kuranda in golden point. For more on the PCYC Cup, turn to page 26.
End of an era By Justin Fris
T
HE MAREEBA Shire Council is calling for expressions of interest to occupy and operate the Chillagoe Hub building. For current leasee’s Jim and Tonia Evans, it will truly be an end of an era. In operation since 2002, the duo has provided a quality experience for all who visit Chillagoe’s attractions. Mr Evans said cuts to raised commissions had reduced his revenue beyond a viable level. “We approached the Minister and several key
government officials for assistance, but all to no avail,” he said. “So we gave notice that we would not be proceeding after the end of October.” Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore praised Jim and Tonia’s tenure and said the hub would provide a good opportunity for someone to be involved in the local area. “Jim and Tonia have been fantastic, but we have an open mind about the future ownership of the hub,” Mayor Gilmore said. A National Parks ministerial spokesperson said the new leasees would be given an opportu-
nity to negotiate with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), over the business of selling national park cave tour tickets. All ticket funds generated by the QPWS would be put toward facility maintenance and ranger tours. Chillagoe has been abuzz with recent developments, with two key projects recently completed. Donna Cave has received a $545,000 lighting upgrade; along with an additional $230,000 toward improving visitor facilities at the Chillagoe Smelters site. National Parks Minister Steve Dickson is con-
fident tourists will enjoy the new cave lighting. “While the previous system was outdated and required regular repairs, the new lights will make it easier and safer for visitors to explore the caves,” Mr Dickson said. Member for Cook David Kempton also believes the local economy will benefit greatly from the recent upgrades. “Our investment at the national park will reap long-term rewards for the community and for many businesses on the Tablelands,” Mr Kempton said.
