Coming together for the love of rugby league By Justin Fris RUGBY league was the big winner of the day on Saturday, with communities from all over Far North Queensland participating in the PCYC Cup. On a beautiful day for rugby league, the passion on the sidelines was only bettered by the quality of talent on the field. Even more remarkable, some of the teams are unable to play regularly, due to a lack of transportation options. Although struggling in the U/17’s boys division, Mareeba locals were ecstatic, after the U/13 girls ran out 4-0 winners over Kuranda in golden point. For more on the PCYC Cup, turn to page 26.
End of an era By Justin Fris
T
HE MAREEBA Shire Council is calling for expressions of interest to occupy and operate the Chillagoe Hub building. For current leasee’s Jim and Tonia Evans, it will truly be an end of an era. In operation since 2002, the duo has provided a quality experience for all who visit Chillagoe’s attractions. Mr Evans said cuts to raised commissions had reduced his revenue beyond a viable level. “We approached the Minister and several key
government officials for assistance, but all to no avail,” he said. “So we gave notice that we would not be proceeding after the end of October.” Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore praised Jim and Tonia’s tenure and said the hub would provide a good opportunity for someone to be involved in the local area. “Jim and Tonia have been fantastic, but we have an open mind about the future ownership of the hub,” Mayor Gilmore said. A National Parks ministerial spokesperson said the new leasees would be given an opportu-
nity to negotiate with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), over the business of selling national park cave tour tickets. All ticket funds generated by the QPWS would be put toward facility maintenance and ranger tours. Chillagoe has been abuzz with recent developments, with two key projects recently completed. Donna Cave has received a $545,000 lighting upgrade; along with an additional $230,000 toward improving visitor facilities at the Chillagoe Smelters site. National Parks Minister Steve Dickson is con-
fident tourists will enjoy the new cave lighting. “While the previous system was outdated and required regular repairs, the new lights will make it easier and safer for visitors to explore the caves,” Mr Dickson said. Member for Cook David Kempton also believes the local economy will benefit greatly from the recent upgrades. “Our investment at the national park will reap long-term rewards for the community and for many businesses on the Tablelands,” Mr Kempton said.

Brand new ambulance By Katherine Kokkonen MAREEBA residents can rest assured that during their hour of need the latest technology will be on hand. The latest state-of-the-art vehicle to join the Mareeba Ambulance fleet was officially handed over on Friday, September 27. The $215,000 vehicle has the latest technology, including advanced communication systems and latest patient monitoring devices. The vehicle’s equipment includes an infrared reversing camera, satellite communications, a combi carrier and the latest stretcher, all of which will support ambulance officers in their work. “You don’t really want to meet us and to be hopping into the back of one,” Officer in Charge at Mareeba Ambulance Station Gavin Rablin joked. “But you can rest assured you’re getting the best equipment available in Queensland and the latest technology.” Member for Cook David Kempton said the vehicle was part of the government’s commitment to ensure remote areas have the best services possible. “It’s important that the

community’s safety and demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the Queensland Ambulance Service remains one of the top performing emergency service organisations in the country.
“It takes a unique person to commit themselves to a profession entirely focused on helping others and this vehicle will support personnel to provide the best possible pre-hospital medical care.”
Councillors debate over subdivision ACCOUNT MANAGER Natasha Srhoj

By Katherine Kokkonen A SUBDIVISION in Mareeba is back on the drawing board, while plans to subdivide in Julatten have been quashed after applications sparked debate within the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC). Councillors discussed the merit of two items concerning development applications for subdivisions at MSC’s meeting on Wednesday, October 1. Item 1 dealt with the application from GR Pederson to reconfigure a lot on Mareeba-Dimbulah Road from one into three. The officer recommended refusing the application as it was in conflict with the Mareeba Shire Planning Scheme Part 4 Division 14–Rural Zone Code. The application conflicted with elements in the Rural Zone Code, including protecting good quality agricultural land from fragmentation and alienation. Councillor Allan Holmes requested that staff see if they would be able to come back with recommendations that would allow MSC to go ahead with the “minor subdivision”. While he expressed concern about access to Dimbulah Road and to water, Cr Holmes was supportive of the development. “The area really is an old gravel pit and it is my view
that the best use of that particular patch of land is to put a couple of houses on it,” he said. However not everyone supported the development with Cr Jenny Jensen concerned about MSC going against its own planning scheme. She acknowledged that the current scheme at various times did not meet the community’s needs, but ultimately MSC should not go against it. She said that while MSC is in the process of planning a new scheme, they should not in the interim be making decisions in an ad hoc manner. The motion to uphold the officer’s recommendation was supported by Crs Jensen and Karen Ewin, while Crs Nipper Brown, Mary Graham and Holmes voted to reject the refusal. The motion was lost and a second motion was carried for officers to find reasons to accept the subdivision. The second item dealt with a development application from P Edison to subdivide a lot in Julatten from one into two; the subdivision would separate the site’s two existing dwellings onto separate titles. The MSC officer recommended to refuse the application for similar reasons as outlined in Item 1. Cr Holmes said a rejection of the officer’s recommendation would give people more certainty of their tenure and ownership of their houses and that such a decision
was within the scope of council. “Why do we have a council? Why not just have a rulebook? I think we were elected as councillors and in that capacity we ought to be interpreting these matters and looking and evaluating each one of these on the circumstances,” he said. Cr Jensen said she didn’t want the debate to become an argument about rulebooks because it was about council’s role in planning. She wanted MSC to exercise “good planning sense” and manage on an overall strategic basis how the community develops. Cr Jensen said a decision against the officer’s recommendation would “open the doorway” as a precedent for everybody with two dwellings on their property to apply for subdivisions. “We are going to end up with an awful mess of ad hoc subdivisions all over the place,” she said. Mayor Tom Gilmore and Crs Jensen and Ewin voted to uphold the officer’s recommendation, while Crs Brown, Holmes and Graham voted to reject the motion. As Cr Alan Pedersen was absent, Mayor Gilmore used his casting vote to break the deadlock. “As is the convention, I will cast my vote for the status quo and the motion is carried,” he said.

Generous donations By Katherine Kokkonen
MAREEBA hospital has two new pieces of equipment thanks to generous donations from community groups. Mareeba Lionesses accessed a grant through Mareeba’s Bendigo Bank for Mareeba Hospital to purchase a humidifier and tympanometer. Clinical nurse paediatrics Thelma McKinney said the humidifier will allow staff to better treat patients. The equipment can be used on everyone from tiny babies to older children and adults, but
will mainly be used for children and babies with asthma, croup, upper respiratory tract infections and bronchiolitis. Ms McKinney said children who come in with breathing difficulties will be able to be put straight onto the humidifier, which will moisten the back of their throats and reduce any swelling. “It’s so nice to have these groups [the Lionesses and Bendigo Bank] doing these things,” Ms McKinney said. “If a child starts to get funny with its breathing we start to think,
‘let’s get this moving’ and ‘what can I do for this child’ and this will be one of the first things. If it is just one child a year who uses it—that’s perfect.” As well as the humidifier the Mareeba Hospital purchased a tympanometer, which will help staff to check the function of the middle ear. This particular piece of equipment can be used on newborns, allowing staff to diagnose early if there are any issues, such as middle ear infection

and glue ear. Child health nurse Sandra Wallace said the tympanometer will assist in prevention and treatment of issues that might result in hearing loss. “Early diagnosis can prevent ongoing problems with hearing, speech and learning,” Ms Wallace said. “If they can’t hear they can’t learn and they don’t speak well and it takes years to get back, so prevention is better than cure.”

Roads earmarked for ugrade in Atherton and Malanda By Katherine Kokkonen TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) has earmarked roads in Malanda and Atherton for upgrades after forecasts the bitumen reseal and asphalt overlay programs will come in under budget. TRC debated the inclusion of roads on the Supplemental 2014/15 bitumen reseal and asphalt overlay program at their meeting on Thursday. TRC had approved the 2014/15 annual bitumen reseal and annual asphalt overlay programs at the May 1 meeting and works on the programs have already commenced. General Manager Infrastructure Services Ross McKim explained to council that there was the “potential that money will be left over after work completed” and the officer recommended undertaking additional works “until the annual bitumen reseal budget and asphalt overlay program budget are spent”. Councillor Shaaron Linwood questioned Mr McKim over the inclusion of particular roads and how they rated with
the council prioritisation tool, especially when compared to other roads, such as Glen Allyn Road, which had been left off the supplemental program. He responded that Memorial Drive had been brought to council officers’ attention due to its “dreadful condition” after which the officers determined it was a council responsibility, while Mary Street was a request from a councillor. Mr McKim added that the included roads had higher traffic volume which was taken into consideration and that projects that were currently deferred would be considered as priority projects in the future. “So long as another councillor doesn’t come in with their pet project,” Cr Linwood quipped. The Supplemental 2014/15 bitumen reseal asphalt overlay program was carried with the votes of Mayor Rosa Lee Long and Councillors Geoff Stocker, Peter Hodge and Rod Marti. Cr Linwood did not vote for the program and Cr Marjorie Pagani was absent.

Give back to the community through Meals on Wheels By Katherine Kokkonen
Cheryl Bell and Laura Pizzatti cook up a storm for Meals on Wheels.
MEALS on Wheels Mareeba is keen for more volunteers to come on board when they hold their AGM at the end of the month. The roles of president, vicepresident, treasurer and secretary are up for grabs and current President Joe Cheetham encouraged people with an interest in making a difference for their community to volunteer for the various roles. He said the roles would suit people who have business backgrounds, managerial experience and a keen interest in being part of the committee. “The more people we have with diverse skills on the management committee the better it is,” Mr Cheetham said. “For people who are willing
to be of service to the community it helps them to develop their skills. The management committee is there to manage and make the right decisions. The more people we have making an input into those decisions the better decision you have.” As well as committee positions, Meals on Wheels is open to volunteers who would like to help out in the kitchen and with delivering meals. Mr Cheetham would also like to thank generous local farmers for their donations of fresh produce. Meals on Wheels Mareeba will hold their AGM at 10am, on October 20, at the CWA hall on Wilkes St. If you would like to volunteer or for more information, call Meals on Wheels on 4092 2278.
Rego rules change for drivers By Justin Fris CAR registration stickers in Queensland are a thing of the past, after the Newman government announced changes to accessing car registration details online as of October 1, 2014. The new change will benefit Queensland taxpayers, saving up to $3.5 million per year. Speaking at Rego Sticker Liberation Day, Assistant Minister for Transport Steven Minnikin said the app would reduce red tape for Queenslanders. “Cutting red tape for Queenslanders is
all part of the LNP Government’s strong plan for a bright future,” Mr Minnikin said. Despite stickers no longer required on vehicles, there will be no excuse for any driver to stop paying their registration. “Both police and TMR will continue to crack down on unregistered vehicles through current enforcement and further expansion of the Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras,” Mr Minnikin said. Queensland drivers will still receive their registration notification in the mail, which will include a fee breakdown and payment options.

Those doing it tough need help By Justin Fris
invitation
MAREEBA’s own Living Waters Church is preparing for its annual food drive; and they need your help more than ever before. Despite delivering over 836 food parcels since 2003, there is hope that more donations can bring greater joy to those who need it most. “We really do come across a crosssection of hard working families who are doing it tough,” Pastor Jeff Xhafer said. “More often than not, they only need a little bit of help to get back on their feet.” Under the watchful eye of Pastor Xhafer, food parcel deliveries peaked at 117 during 2011, with each parcel containing between $80-120 worth of groceries.

“We are very proud of our community and their previous donations during October have carried us toward the later months of the year,” Pastor Xhafer said. But with cost of living pressures rising along with organisational downsizing, many in the community now live from pay cheque to pay cheque. These situations are far too common for Pastor Xhafer and his team, who work hard to provide a ray of hope amongst the gloom of uncertainty. “We are very accepting of everyone within the Mareeba community and would really appreciate any food donation we receive,” Pastor Xhafer said. So if you have the opportunity, please donate to this worthy cause and assist those who have fallen on hard times.

Debate rages over Hann Hwy By Justin Fris NORTH QUEENSLAND’S leading politicians are calling on the Newman government to allocate funding for an inland highway, which would successfully link the Far North with Brisbane. Along with this, KAP leader Bob Katter, State Member for Mt Isa Robbie Katter and State Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth have also voiced concern over the Hann Highway, urging it to be sealed. “Both governments are stalling on the additional funding required for the completion of the highway,” Mr Katter said. “The Hann highway is the missing link between Lynd and Hughenden – which links Cairns to Melbourne. This development would shave off 700km and two days off the inland trip.” The trio have held multiple meetings with action groups, department of transport and the Etheridge and Flinders Shire coun-
Bob Katter alongside the Hann Highway, with members of the Hann Highway action group.
cils in a bid to improve the current situation. Mr Katter called on Premier Campbell Newman to increase funding for the Hann highway project as it would greatly benefit the Far North. “So far the Flinders and the Etheridge Shire Councils have received funding of $20 million to undertake the Hann Highway upgrade. However, to complete the project they will need funding in the vicinity of $140 million,” Mr Katter said. If the Premier can find a couple of billion dollars for infrastructure projects in the south east corner, spending $5000m on a tunnel and nearly $1000 million on his Taj Mahal, surely he can find $140 million for a vital road project for north Queensland, without selling off our assets.” As the debate continues to rumble on, local communities can rest assured that the far north “special K’s” are representing them with distinction.

THE EQUALISER, with Denzel Washington and Chloe Grace Maretz, packs a real punch and is excellent cinema entertainment – it's everything you'd expect from a Denzel Washington thriller . Also continuing for a second big week is THE MAZE RUNNER, and there's one last chance to catch PLANES, FIRE AND RESCUE and HOUSE OF MAGIC today, Wednesday October 8.

But when he meets Teri (Chloe Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of Russian gangsters, he has to help her. cover the almost insurmountable odds of making it in the professional dance world. But when the new dance crew he forms with the beautiful and headstrong Andie West (Briana Evigan) reaches the final rounds of a high-stakes reality TV competition in glittering Las Vegas, he has a shot at finally making his dreams come true-if he can set aside old loyalties and long-time rivalries and just do what he loves most: dance.
THE MAZE RUNNER
Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) wakes up in a lift, moving slowly upward. As the box
grinds to a halt and the doors open, he finds himself among a colony of boys who welcome him to the Glade - a large open expanse surrounded by enormous concrete walls that lead to the Maze. Thomas' mind is blank. He has no knowledge of who or where he is. Every 30 days a new boy arrives but less than a week after his arrival, the first girl - Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) arrives. Each resident learns the role he has to play, while Thomas starts to think there is something locked in his memories that might help solve the mysteries of the Maze and the world beyond.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift calls on Far North Queensland ladies – and fellas – to unite in pink this October to take on women’s cancers.
Far North Queensland - it’s time to get pretty in pink to take on women’s cancers! This October, I’m calling on the Far North Queensland community to go pink and unite in the fight against all women’s cancers! This year alone, around 3900 Queensland women will be diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer. Nearly 44,000 Queensland women are alive today after a diagnosis of women’s cancer in the past 25 years, and at least 10 Queensland women are diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer every day. The entire month of October, including Pink Ribbon Day (Monday, October 27) provides an opportunity to unite in pink and show support for the one in six Queensland women who will be diagnosed with a women’s cancer in their lifetime – that’s one in six too many. Pink month is a chance to get the girls together, share stories and talk about the ways we can reduce our risk of cancer and detect the disease early. We’re inviting all Far North Queenslanders to take on women’s cancers in a number of ways this month, including purchasing Pink merchandise (go pink with everything from scarves to water bottles, lapel pins, bracelets, t-shirts, flowers, pens, bears and more!), volunteering on Pink Ribbon Day, hosting a Pink fundraising event such as Girls’ Night In or registering for the Cairns Walk for Women’s Cancers on October 26 from Fogarty Park. Getting the girls together and getting in-
volved in these events is not only a lot of fun, but will make a real difference to those affected by breast of gynaecological cancers by raising funds for CCQ’s prevention programs, support services and world class research. This month is also an important reminder for all Far North Queensland women to participate in recommended cancer screening to help improve survival rates and detect cancer early. Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer diagnosed in Far North Queensland women and around 150 will be diagnosed with the disease this year. This year Cancer Council Queensland aims to raise $2.35 million through Pink Ribbon Day and Pink Ribbon Fundraising events. What are you waiting for? Get your girlfriends, mothers, sisters, daughters and grandmas together now to keep the girls together later! If you’re a serial social media fan, we welcome you to blog, tweet, post or pin, using your social media space as a weapon in the fight against cancer too – hashtag #pinkribbon, help us get the word out and make a difference to someone diagnosed with cancer. More information is available via www. pinkribbon.com.au, www.walkforwomen. org.au or 1300 65 65 85. More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available via Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au.

Get ready for country music festival fun EVERYTHING from boot scootin’ beats to bittersweet melodies and soulful ballads will be on show at the FNQ Country Music Festival this weekend. The festival kicks of on Friday with buskers serenading the public in downtown Mareeba followed by the people’s choice open mic concert. The stars come out to shine on Saturday with a super concert at Kerribee Park with the Talent Quest wrapping up the fun on Sunday. President of Walkamin Country Music Club Darryl Chaplain encouraged everyone to dig out their boots for a toe-tapping good time. Kerribee Park has camping facilities for those looking to kick back and enjoy the festival in beautiful weather. “It is really good family entertainment and the best of local talent is showcased throughout the weekend,” he said. Mareeba’s Kate Wilcox will be performing live this weekend. Photo by Peter Roy
Headlining the Super Show is award winning song writer Kalesti Butler & The Kollection. The seasoned Australian performer will have the crowd humming with her bush ballad style tunes. Rising stars will also take to the stage, including Kate Wilcox who had previously won the CMAA scholarship. The audience will have a chance to discover new talent and judge the best act at the open mic night on Friday. Performers keen to have a crack can still get nomination forms and Mr Chaplain hoped the festival will find and support new talent, with the winner of the open mic night getting a chance to perform on the main stage at next year’s festival. “The festival is all about getting up and having a go,” he said. Tickets are available at the gate. For more information, email wcmc1@bigpond.com or head to http://fnqcmf.webs.com.

The LAND Ag comes to classrooms
Cattle prices surge at Mareeba By Justin Fris THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 833 cattle on Tuesday, September 30th at the Mareeba Saleyards. Recent higher price trends have winged their way into the Far North, which resulted in excellent returns for all buyers and graziers. The yard average return of 149.2 c/ kg ensured supplier received an average return of $568.76 per head. Two major factors have resulted in a settling market over the past few weeks. Firstly, a shortage of fat cattle has ensured greater competitiveness across the region. Coupled with this, all four major exporters have been buying out of the sale. Similar trends have been recorded
further south in Roma and Toowoomba. QLD Rural knocked down the top price of the sale, with 10 steers of DJ Pastoral, Lakeland Downs, realising up to 205.6c/kg. Overall yardings in Mareeba have steadily increased in recent months and should provide confidence to local producers. The cow market was also positive, selling up to 172.2 c/kg (average 125.3c/kg). If you would like to nominate your cattle for future sales, please contact your local agent or the Mareeba Saleyards on 0439 737 175. Sales commence at 9am on Tuesday, with all nominated cattle required by 7pm each Tuesday night (night before the sale).

AgriFood Education Officer Sharon Charter and Far North Queensland Regional Workforce Development Officer Leanne Kruss help Mt Molloy State School students learn about agricultural opportunities. By Katherine Kokkonen STUDENTS have been getting hands-on when learning where produce comes from as part of the Agriculture and Food in the Australian Curriculum Program. Production Horticulture’s Regional Workforce Development Officer for Far North Queensland Leanne Kruss joined forces with AgriFood Education officer Sharon Charter to visit schools across the region to raise awareness of new teacher resources. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association President Joe Moro encouraged parents and teachers to get behind the program. “While still in its early stages, the Agriculture and Food in the Australian Curriculum Program is showing great promise and implanting positive messages to children about food, agriculture and the amazing array of career pathways in this growing industry,” he said. The teacher resources for Year Five and Six link in to the National Curriculum and aim to inspire an interest in agriculture and the food supply chain among students and teachers. Ms Kruss and Ms Charter ran interactive and hands-on lessons at Mount Molloy State School, which

about how it is a complex job—a farmer has to know about pest control, irrigation and business management, marketing and much more.” Ms Kruss said the program ticked all the boxes when it came to the national curriculum and could be modified to suit the regions where schools are located. For example, across the Tablelands the history of Italian and Croatian immigrants and agriculture could be taught. Also on offer is an Agriculture in Schools Small Grant of $5,000 per school from the Queensland Department of Agriculture. Mt Molloy State School has been successful in attaining this grant and will put it towards the construction of an outside agriculture student laboratory, for experiments relating to their vegetable garden, the soil, climate, environment and insect studies. If you are a principal or teacher, have a child in school, or are involved in your school’s P&C Association, and would like to see students grow a better understanding about the importance of farmers, farming, healthy eating and career options, contact Leanne Kruss via email at rwdo.mdfvga.fnq@gmail.com. Further information on the program and resources can be found on the AgriFood Skills Australia website: www.agrifoodskills.net.au.

allowed students to learn more about where their food comes and the array of career opportunities in agriculture. She said students throughout all levels of the school were already “very switched on about food”. To help the students realise what careers are available in agriculture, Ms Kruss brought a pineapple to class and talked about how many people it took to produce the fruit. “They absolutely loved it—we had games to play and the school already had a Stephanie Alexander garden so they were already very big with students learning about food and where it comes from,” Ms Kruss said. “This can help get them talking about careers and inspire them about the future. In 10 to 15 years there will be jobs out there that haven’t been created yet and this is about creating the ability to have those jobs filled by students that are coming through now.” Ms Kruss said she hoped the program would open students’ eyes up to the possibilities and the variety of careers available, including everything from farming to transport logistics and marketing. “Agriculture is a main pillar of the economy,” she said. “This is about getting children thinking about food and farmers and

EXPRESS sPORT Mareeba girls’ Golden afternoon
Photos by Peter Roy
By Justin Fris It took until 4.15pm for the cheers of Mareeba locals to ring loudly around Davies Park on Saturday afternoon. After a titanic struggle against Kuranda, Mareeba was left standing in golden point glory, winning 4-0 in the U/13’s girls PCYC Cup final. The sheer elation and joy spread like wildfire throughout the venue and showed the future looks bright for female rugby league in the tablelands. Bandits on track to win with surprise twist The Mareeba Bandits took on Mulgrave on Sunday for their second match of the season. The Bandits batted first and were off to a shaky start, losing wickets at a regular intervals and were finally bowed out for 115. Mulgrave in reply then collapsed to be eight for 55 off 19 overs, in the two day match, which continues this Sunday at Fuller Park, Edmonton.
If the Bandits can keep up their strong bowling form. they have the potential to secure their second win of the FNQ Cricket season. Highest Mareeba scorers on the first day were: Cameron McPherson with 36, Brett Brewer with 21 and Zac Adams 13. Best bowlers for Mareeba were: Robert Taylor 4-31 off 9, Lachlan Ford 2-3 off 3 and Brett Brewer 2-12 off 6.
Horn keeps slender lead By Justin Fris ANDREW HORN has maintained his lead in the FNQ Khanacross Championship, after last weekend’s round 5 meeting at Rallysport Park in Mareeba. Despite finishing 3rd overall, Horn managed to keep fellow rivals Rowan Trewick (1st) and Trevor Thompson (2nd) at arm’s length in the FNQ series. Dry and dusty conditions beamed down for the spectators, who were treated to a thrilling weekend. Course traction also proved to be a headache for all
drivers, who battled their way through the loose and slippery track conditions. Successful throttle control allowed Trewick to claim victory in his turbo charged Celica, while his rivals trailed in a cloud of dust. Trewick has made a blistering start in both FNQ and the North QLD championship competitions this season and can place further heat on Horn’s lead in November. Round 6 of the FNQ Kahnacross Championship will be held at Rallysport Park on the weekend of November 1st/2nd.
Mareeba summer season basketball resumes The Mareeba Summer Season basketball competition resumes this Tuesday night, October 7, following the school holiday break. Six rounds of fixtures remain before the final series and any victories by the various teams may well become important. The undefeated Red Devils lead the Senior Mens division on 20 competition points. Majestic Gallopers have 16 points and Stingrays next on 11 points. While Topshot Thunder and Comet Young Guns needing wins to challenge for the Championship Title.
Holding top position in the Senior Ladies fixtures is the young Highschool Divas side on 20 points. Right on their heals are Gummaz and Baiada Steggles with 17 points. The other Semi-Final position will be fought out by Tequila Slammers, M.M.A.M.A., Miakats and Killers. Phoenix Under 16 Junior side are ladder leaders on 24 points. A good effort by these Juniors, being undefeated and also the youngest side in this grade. Sharing second place are All Stars and War-
riors with 20 points. Another undefeated side is Wolves in the Under 14 Junior fixtures. With 15 championship points. Hawks trail by only 2 points. However Eagles, Tigers and Lakers have the ability to challenge the top 2 teams over the next 6 rounds. FNQ are futsal kings “Unstoppa-Bulls” primed for Crad Evans Shield
The victorious FNQ Cairns squad after their national championship. By Justin Fris FNQ Cairns have cruised to national futsal championship glory; after brushing aside the QLD City Maroons 8-2 in the final. Ronnie Leporati’s men showed no mercy throughout the tournament from the opening pool matches. Wins over QLD Country (8-3), Victoria Metro (6-3) and Victoria Country (3-0) ensured a semi final matchup against neighbouring Cairns Red. With
an insatiable appetite for goal, FNQ Cairns cruised to a 7-2 derby victory and carried their excellent form through to the final and beyond. Leporati (who was named coach of the tournament) was thrilled with how the team applied themselves on the national stage. “We had three sessions prior to the tournament and had a healthy squad across all areas,” Leporati said.
“Despite some big wins, we were challenged in every game and had to battle all the way to get a result.” The talented group did not go unnoticed by rival states, with many watchful eyes commenting on their technical ability and passion for the game. “We should have a couple of the boys selected for the Australian team in a few weeks, which will be a fantastic achievement for them,” Leporati said.

Legend heads to Mareeba
The Bulls stampede during 2014 yielded this fine haul By Justin Fris THE MAREEBA Bulls can create a rare slice of history in Saturday’s Crad Evans shield final, where they will face the Heatly Warriors at Brolga Park in Townsville. A potential “treble treble” is very real, with all grades (premier mens, reserves and second division) yet again reaching the FNQ final. The Bulls charged their way to grand final and premiership glory under Alex Srhoj in 2014 and are only 90 minutes away from being the number one Craig Foster is keen to come to Mareeba.
FORMER Socceroo international Craig Foster will be amongst the Mareeba football community on the 16th October, as Mareeba State High conducts their 11th annual sports presentation night. Foster, who is currently the chief football analyst for SBS television, is regarded as having one of the most astute football minds in Australia. Winning his first Socceroo cap in 1996, Foster represented his country 29 times, along with spending a solid stint with Crystal Palace in England.

Mareeba United Football Club “I’m delighted to come up to FNQ and spend time with a broad cross-section of people,” Foster said. “The overall growth and amount of football on television has definitely appeared to energise the region.” With the National Premier League and FFA Cup providing extra exposure below the A-League, talented footballers in FNQ have never had a better opportunity to shine. The sport presentation night will be held at the Mareeba International Club, on October 16, kicking off at 6.30pm. Contact the school for more information.

football club in North QLD. Srhoj believes his men will relish the opportunity to represent their club at such a high level. “While we defiantly respect the challenge in front of us, we do not fear the opportunity. In fact, it gives us the extra motivation and enthusiasm to work harder than ever before,” Srhoj said. Players across all grades enjoyed last Friday night’s “Champions Dinner” at the Bulls clubhouse, which gave families and supporters an opportunity to see their local heroes off in style.
