THANK YOU: Christina Ellacott and Elma Lingard were recognised with the Mareeba Medal “For making the school great”.

TWO stalwart Mareeba State High employees were recognised for their integral contribution to the school as they were awarded the Principal’s Award for outstanding service along with a Mareeba State High Medal.

Christina Ellacott and Elma Lingard have been involved with Mareeba State High for the past 30 years, and were crucial in pioneering initiatives that have taken the school to great heights.

Ms Ellacott began her MSHS career in 1985 as a teacher until leaving in 1993, however she returned in 2006 as the Gifted and Talented Coordinator where she has remained in the role to date.

Ms Ellacott’s work in running the Gifted and Talented Program is one that has thrust the school’s highest achievers into the state and national spotlight where they have performed well above expectations.

There have been a number of worthwhile competitions, activities and initiatives students have undertaken as part of the Gifted of Talented program, of which include the Brain Bee and Mooting competitions, the National Science Forum among many others.

The program also boasts a number of students who have won special awards such as the Order of Australia, TJ Ryan and Peter Doherty Awards.

Ms Ellacott said winning the Mareeba State High Medal was a huge honour.

“I was extremely honoured to win, it wasn’t something I was expecting,” she said.

“I had somewhat mixed feelings about winning the award as there’s so many teachers in this school who work so hard and have contributed so much over the years.”

Ms Ellacott said she is incredibly passionate about gifted and talented education as it challenges high-achieving students to push themselves even further and reach their full potential.

“In my role I made a concerted effort to normalise academic success and wanted to encourage students to be proud of their academic accomplishments,” she said.

“I am so pleased and proud to have been offered the opportunity to work with these students over the past 12 years - it has been an absolute privilege and one that not many teachers get to experience.”

Ms Ellacott noted that she is retiring at the end of the school year and wanted to thank those who have helped build the Gifted and Talented Program into an overwhelming success.

“First and foremost I would like to recognise Angela Toppin who was the Principal at the time when the program started; she instituted the program and was instrumental in encouraging and supporting me in developing it into what it is today,” she said.

The other person I would like to recognise is Terry McClelland as he helped me engage with other teachers and staff in the school to get their support in order to keep it going.

“And lastly I want to acknowledge Lucy Daly, we’ve worked together on a number of projects and she’s been an incredibly supportive and helpful colleague throughout my time here.”

staff member Elma Lingard echoed Ms Ellacott’s sentiments.

“I was absolutely thrilled to be recognised for my contribution to Mareeba State High School,” she said.

“For the school to thank me that way was extremely special.”

Ms Lingard was involved with Mareeba State High in some capacity for three decades, whether it was as a volunteer or an employee, and in doing so garnered a deep respect from colleagues and students alike through her important work.

Ms Lingard was employed to work with the school’s indigenous children in the form of counselling and support, most notably in her role as Community Education Counsellor from 1996 until her retirement in 2013.

“A lot of my work was with the indigenous students of which I really enjoyed,” she said.

“In saying that, as a mother and a local, I made sure I was supportive of all students no matter their background.”

Ms Lingard went above and beyond in her time with MSHS, of which includes her integral involvement in initiating the Reconciliation Action Plan, as well as the Breakfast and Lunch Programs which provided food to students in need.

“My time at MSHS was extremely rewarding and I loved every minute of it,” Ms Lingard said.

“It’s a part of my life that brings me great joy and I will never forget it.

“I still have ex-students and staff members come up and say hello and mention how appreciative they are for the time I spent with them, which really means a lot.”

Both Ms Ellacott and Ms Lingard said they wanted to thank principal Scott Whybird for the privilege of being awarded a Mareeba State High Medal.

THE My Health Record scheme is one that has been met with confusion and divisive rhetoric, and the uncertainty surrounding the proposal is only set to grow as the Health Minister Greg Hunt announced last week that the opt-out deadline for Australians has been extended to January 31, 2019.

The extension comes as the opt-out website encountered issues last Wednesday after Australians attempted to remove themselves from the scheme ahead of the pending deadline.

The My Health Record means Australians with a MediCare card will automatically have a digital record stored online courtesy of their healthcare providers unless they choose to opt-out.

This will provide medical professionals access to pertinent health information such as allergies, pre-existing medical conditions, pathology test results and the like.

Mareeba General Practitioner Grant Manypeney said there has been plenty of misinforma-

tion spread about what the My Health Record means for Australians.

“I think a number of the concerns that have been raised are unfounded and exaggerated,” he said.

“Although there are certainly both pros and cons to this scheme, I believe the positives vastly outweigh the negatives.

“One of the biggest talking points has been the invasion of personal privacy, however I don’t think a lot of people realise how tight the restrictions

Despite the favourable way in which Dr Manypeney speaks on the My Health Record scheme, he highlighted what he believes to be the most legitimate concerns surrounding the proposal.

“If I had to identify the biggest issue with the My Health Record, it would be the difficulty in opting-out once you have signed up,” he said.

“It is a time consuming and painfully complicated process

“That way we are receiving assistance and opinions on whether or not we are providing the desired standard of policing in Queensland.”

Lakes light up

Council recently created a 600m circuit at Mareeba's Bicentennial Lakes, complete with 14 solar lights.

The new solar lights are motion-sensored and become brighter as movement is detected. Council hopes that the new infrastructure will improve safety and encourage residents and visitors to utilise the area more frequently.

This is just the start of Council’s overall vision to revitalise Basalt Gully.

Business case Byrnes st seats Day of appreciation for Nullinga in the works for school’s staff

COUNCIL has received inquiries regarding the availability of seating in Byrnes Street, and a request to install additional seats.

Historically, Council provided and maintained numerous public benches. However, Council has reduced the number of these over time. This decision was made in consultation with the business community and other services.

Council allows approved furniture to be placed on the Byrnes Street footpath at no cost to the business owner; however an application will need to be made to Council and business owners will have to follow guidelines before an approval is given.

All businesses are encouraged to take advantage of this initiative by putting out a table and chairs for the comfort and convenience of residents and visitors to the town.

MAREEBA State High’s teachers were the focal point last Tuesday as the school held a morning tea and assembly to show gratitude for their enormous efforts in what has been a trying time of late for MSHS. The first show of thanks was a morning tea for teachers and students provided by community organisation Churches Together.

Pastor Darryl Roos said it was an opportunity to say thank you on behalf of all of the churches in Mareeba.

“Today is about displaying to the teachers that they aren’t on their own and that all of us care and appreciate what they are doing for our children,” he said.

“They benefit our communi-

ty immensely and we should always be striving to ensure they receive the acknowledgement they deserve.”

MSHS Principal Scott Whybird reiterated Mr Roos’ comments in lauding the school’s day of appreciation.

“Today is about respecting the staff and everything they do,” he said.

“As many throughout the town are aware, it’s been a difficult year for the school, and in tough times you need all of the support and encouragement you can get, which is why this morning tea is of such importance.”

“The teachers have stepped up greatly when faced with adverse circumstances this year.”

Mr Whybird also wanted

to give thanks to Churches Together for their extensive help in organising the occasion.

“I think it’s outstanding to have Churches Together on board today - this day of appreciation is something that the community has come together and really gotten behind, and it’s great to have these days to highlight the number of positive things happening at Mareeba State High,” he said.

The day culminated in an assembly at the school’s hall in which the Year 12 cohort called up individual teachers to the stage to receive a thank you note and cupcake as a symbol of their appreciation as students of the school.

AS Cairns and the greater region continue to see a forever growing demand in water supply, the viability of the Nullinga Dam and Mareeba Dimbulah Water Supply Scheme Improvements Project becomes of greater importance.

Located on the Walsh River, the proposed Nullinga Dam site is situated roughly 55 kilometres south-west of Cairns and 24 kilometres south-west of Mareeba, within the Mareeba Shire Council and Barron Water Plan areas.

Approval on whether the scheme will go ahead is still dependent on the Queensland Government’s satisfaction with the detailed business case that Building Queensland and Sunwater are set to present in mid-

2019.

Extending on the preliminary analysis completed by Building Queensland in 2017, the business case is investigating the construction of Nullinga Dam and enhancements to the existing water supply.

This evaluation will then determine the project’s economic and financial viability, taking into consideration the social and environmental impacts.

If the Queensland Government decides to approve the project, the environmental approvals process will commence shortly thereafter.

If approved, the project is scheduled to be completed within 7-10 years from the year 2019.

Dog registration policy in question A policy has been called into question by a Kuranda local after he was issued an infringement notice by the Mareeba Shire Council for an unregistered dog.

David McDowell was issued a notice for failing to pay his dog registration even though he no longer had a dog residing on his property.

Mr McDowell said since being issued the notice, he has told Council on a number of occasions that he hasn’t had a dog on his property since January of this year.

“I think it is an unfair and unreasonable policy and one that needs to be amended,” Mr McDowell said.

“I spoke with the Mayor and he informed me that there are only five or six cases similar to mine each year, which is why in circumstances such as this common sense should prevail.”

Mr McDowell said to be issued an infringement notice is unjust and noted that he will not be paying any associated fines or registration fees for a dog he doesn’t have.

“When you register your car,

boat or trailer for example and you don’t pay the renewal, the item just becomes unregistered, which is what I assumed would have been the case in my situation,” he said.

“That’s why the demands for payment were ignored.

“So if I was caught having an unregistered dog on my property, I would have no problem paying the fine.”

Mr McDowell said MSC has made no effort to contact him besides letters in the mail, which he believes is unaccommodating.

“I physically had to go into the Mareeba Shire Council building to speak with someone directly on the matter after receiving the infringement letter threatening to send it to SPER,” he said.

“There should have been either a face to face conversation or at least a phone call to check if I still had a dog prior to being issued the infringement notice.

“I understand dogs need to be registered and have no problem paying registration for that, but if you don't have a dog anymore the registration should just lapse

after the payment period expires.

“The Council has my current contact number and knows where I live, which was supplied with my previous dog registration.”

Mr McDowell noted that he would be willing to not take the matter any further if MSC would drop the infringement notice.

Mareeba Shire Council refuted Mr McDowell’s version of events.

“As per the Animal Management Act (Cats and Dogs 2008), all dogs in Queensland must be registered. Furthermore, under the Act, residents must notify Council within seven days of any changes to their dog’s registration details – change of address, change of ownership, if the dog dies or the dog no longer lives in the local government area etc.,” an MSC spokesperson said.

“In this instance, the resident received a dog registration renewal notice, a reminder notice, an infringement notice and a final reminder for penalty infringement notice.”

“All dogs in Queensland must be registered,” they said.

“This serves as a timely reminder for all residents to comply with State Government legislation, regulations and duty of care when it comes to owning a dog.”

Wage subsidy available for agricultural businesses Agricultural businesses in regional Far North Queensland are encouraged to take advantage of a newly announced wage subsidy program for apprentices.

From January 1 2019, the Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy will support apprenticeships in skills need occupations in rural and regional areas (those listed on the National Skills Needs List) and encourage participation

in apprenticeships by employers who have not previously engaged apprentices, as well as re-engaging employers who may have disengaged from the system.

The subsidy is available to employers who sign-up and commence a new worker from January 2019, and will continue to be available until the program reaches 1630 sign-ups.

Australian Apprentice undertaking a full-time Certificate III or IV qualification that leads to an occupation listed on the National Skills Needs List in a rural and regional workplace are eligible.

Community plan to save endangered frog species WITH last week marking Australia’s first ever National Frog Week, community members, government agency staff and natural resource management consultants gathered at Kuranda’s Centenary Park to launch The Kuranda Tree Frog Community Action Plan.

The launch last Wednesday was the culmination of over a year’s work.

The Kuranda Tree Frog Com-

munity Action Plan is a community initiative that focusses on ensuring the survival of the endangered Kuranda Tree Frog.

There are just 750 Kuranda Tree Frogs left, and the community-led plan contains priority actions that will contribute to the short and long-term protection of the species and its habitat.

In a press release courtesy of Kuranda EnviroCare, it states that the major threats to the

frog’s survival include habitat loss and changes in water flow, both due to land clearing for development, and an exotic frog fungus called Chytridiomycosis which invades the surface layers of the frog’s skin.

Conservation efforts to date have included tree planting for habitat restoration and riparian corridor linkage of breeding areas, Kuranda Tree Frog population monitoring and frog call

Kuranda EnviroCare’s Cathy Retter said it won’t be an overnight fix.

“We’ll be working towards 10-year goals like entire habitat restoration for the frog, with fully connected 100m wide riparian corridors along all creeks, and agreements with private landholders,” she said.

“The plan is community led, and community backed and because of this we’re optimistic about getting good results for the Kuranda Tree Frog.”

Ms Retter also took time to thank an integral member of the initiative.

“I want to recognise Dr Conrad Hosking from James Cook University in Townsville, I first met him in 2008 and ever since then I’ve been personally fascinated with the work that he’s done with this frog species,” she said.

“He has been so instrumental in giving us the support we needed and the confidence to actually go forward with this plan.”

Evolutionary biologist Dr Conrad Hoskins said that despite the frog living up against the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, very little of its distribution is formally protected.

“It is generally found on pri-

vate land and that’s why the community is the key to its survival.

The action plan is a major step forward in the conservation of this important species,” he said.

“The Kuranda Tree Frog is a highly localised species that needs urgent conservation attention. Impacts to a single creek population impacts the species as a whole – with such a small distribution there is very little buffering.”

The plan’s development was supported by frog scientist Dr Conrad Hoskin, and has been made possible with funding support from Landcare Australia’s Habitat Grants.

THE Kuranda Visitor Information Centre has been named a finalist in the Queensland Community Achievement Awards.

Whilst a judging panel will decide the winners in each category of the Community Achievement Awards, the People’s Choice Award gives the power to the people, to vote for their favourite finalist.

The devoted volunteers have been recognised for their customer service skills and have

been nominated for the Customer Service Award.

Visitor Information Centre Senior Information Officer Catherine Harvey said she was so excited to have made it to the finals.

“The volunteers do an incredible job in their role as ambassadors for Kuranda and the surrounding region, dedicating their time to work in the Information Centre,” she said.

“Customer Service is so important in this day and age, and

their service skills are exceptional when assisting visitors from all over the world.”

The People’s Choice Award is a fun way to spread awareness of the achievements of these volunteers.

Airport scheduled for take off

THE Mareeba Airport is set to take off as the completion of 52 hangar sites draws near.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore is ecstatic with how proceedings are progressing thus far.

“It’s an excellent piece of work, one of which we are extremely proud to be a part of,” Cr Gilmore said.

“The amount of work to ensure this project has gone ahead without a hitch has been enormous, of which includes the operation of 18 acres of earthworks and the shifting of 80,000 tonnes of rocks.”

“This is the most significant milestone for the aviation industry on the Tablelands since the Battle of the Coral Sea, where the Mareeba Airport was used as a refuelling and re-armament base.”

Cr Gilmore said the project

will provide numerous benefits that will help boost the region’s aviation industry and economy moving forward.

“There are a vast array of opportunities in general maintenance, charters and most notably, flight training,” he said.

“If we can have 20-100 pilots trained here, there becomes a flow on effect and the increase in activity allows the aviation industry on the Tablelands to reap the benefits.

“We also expect to see plenty of apprenticeship opportunities in aviation for our youth which is another positive.”

Cr Gilmore said he doesn’t expect to fill the hangar sites immediately, however, he is confident that the Mareeba Airport will become an attractive option for businesses in due time.

by Christmas.

The 52 hangar sites are not the only upgrade happening at the Mareeba Airport, with the second part of the contract comprising of the lengthening of the airstrip.

“The airstrip is currently 1500m long, with the project lengthening that to over 1800m,” Cr Gilmore said.

“In addition, we are also hoping to put in a parallel taxiway for some of the little aeroplanes so there isn’t anyone being held up when trying to land.

“That’s just another aspect of the upgrade that gives further indication of the level of professionalism this project has been approached with.”

Cr Gilmore said the airstrip stage of the project will be upgraded once the wet season is finished.

AS the start of November marked the beginning of Far North Queensland’s cyclone season, Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella is urging residents in the region to be prepared for a significant weather event despite a below than average cyclone season expected.

“BoM’s advice is that the seasonal forecast suggests that the dry, hot weather will continue longer and that the onset of the wet will be late,” Cr Paronella said.

“The likelihood of floods and cyclones is below average, however it is still expected that at least one cyclone will make

landfall this season. This is definitely lower than the average of about four making landfall, but residents still need to be prepared for one affecting our area.”

Cr Paronella, who is also a member of the TRC’s Local Disaster Management Group, said it’s important to start planning as soon as possible.

“It’s never too early to start your preparations and you can never be over prepared,” he said.

“By being prepared and informed you reduce the impact of the cyclone on you, your family and the community.”

Cr Paronella said knowing what action to take is vital when

getting ready for a cyclone.

“It is crucial to ensure you have an emergency household plan and that you prepare an emergency kit,” he said.

“Added to that, clearing your yard of any debris and storing sufficient amounts of food, water and medical supplies is a necessity.”

Coles giving back to those in need this Christmas

GIVING BACK: Members of the Coles Mareeba team are encouraging locals to support the Redkite fundraiser that ends on December 4, 2018.

IN what is the time for giving, Coles is driving local fundraising in Mareeba for families affected by cancer this Christmas as many are also struggling with spiralling costs of living.

Thanks to its partnership with Redkite, Coles recently launched a five-week Christmas campaign to help families pay for rising household bills, medical and travel expenses.

Queensland families have faced a hike in the cost of medical and hospital services over the past five years.

The initiative started on November 1 and will continue until December 4, of which allows

shoppers to purchase $2 donation cards at Coles and Coles Express sites in Mareeba with 100 per cent of funds going directly to Redkite.

Redkite provides essential support to children and young people (aged 24 and under) with cancer and their families from diagnosis, throughout treatment, and after.

Coles Mareeba team member Jenny Ali said it’s a worthwhile initiative that provides necessary support to those in need.

“This is something Coles Mareeba is extremely proud to be a part of,” she said.

“Added to a percentage of

certain purchased products going towards Redkite, as a team we wear different uniforms on Fridays to help create awareness around the initiative, with each team member donating a gold coin in support of the cause.”

Coles State General Manager Jerry Farrell said Coles was delighted to expand its Christmas appeal providing more ways for customers to support Redkite this Christmas.

“Cancer touches the hearts of so many of our customers and team members so we want to give our customers the opportunity to show their support for families in need,” he said.

Inadequate health services in Dimbulah In Queensland, hospitals in the major cities and towns are open to the general public 24/7.

Cairns, Mareeba and Atherton hospitals are open 24/7. However, in regional areas like Dimbulah residents and farm workers are only allowed public access to their newly constructed Primary Health Care Clinic five hours a day Monday to Friday and closed on public holidays.

A Doctor comes out from

Mareeba on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Monday November 12, 2018, the Dimbulah Clinic changed its opening time to 10.00am instead of 8.00am reducing opening hours on that day to three hours.

I and others are aware that in some instances it can take up to a week to get a booking in Dimbulah to see the Doctor either on a Tuesday of Thursday and these two days are generally booked out.

Recently a local farmer’s wife drove to the Dimbulah Clinic

on a Doctors day with her husband in the car who had trouble breathing with a suspected asthma attack. She was informed that she would have to drive her husband down to the Mareeba Hospital as he couldn’t be seen by the Dimbulah Doctor that day.

While there are no issues with the high level of Medical Care delivered by the Director of Nursing at the Clinic and the visiting Doctor, the reduction in opening hours at the Dimbulah Primary Health Care Clinic has been a problem for some years

now. Locals believed that when the “new state of the art” Primary Health Care Clinic was lobbied for and built, more health services would be introduced and the opening hours would increase.

Obviously those managing our health clinic did not factor in the need for increased staffing levels.

Dimbulah has a new 4.7 million dollar Primary Health Care Clinic that is underutilised and does not adequately deliver the level of Health Care services to the people that it was designed for.

It’s not acceptable that Dimbulah families, business owners, farm workers, the elderly and visitors to the area have to continue to drive into Mareeba – a 90 kilometre round trip – to seek primary health care due to inadequate opening hours at the Dimbulah Primary Health Care Clinic.

The range won’t handle KUR-World The proposed KUR-World project Environmental Impact Study has been released. It covers the many impacts to the region it is likely to have, if approved in its current form.

After reading the proposal with interest, its clear the transport infrastructure will not cope with the increased traffic or even

the weight of some building material transported by trucks.

We all know the Kuranda Range Road is at near capacity now, but the developers want to significantly increase the traffic volume over the next nine years before any major upgrade to the Range has taken place. The result will be big time congestion for everyone.

Other developments on the Tablelands will be crowded out – all excess capacity will be usurped by the KUR-World project. Commuters to Cairns will be held hostage to longer and more uncertain travel especially in wet weather.

It’s clear the range cannot handle such a large project and then, we have the Smithfield roundabout to cope with, which is five years away and 300 million dollars later.

I didn’t see anywhere KURWorld offering to contribute anything for the upgrades either – say 5% of 1.4 billion, is about 70 million.

Increased health services needed to handle KUR-World By now most people will have heard about KUR-World. However they may be unaware of its size. This proposed mega resort/ satellite suburb would be able to

accommodate 1400 day visitors and 2000-3000 long-term visitors and residents.

It is planned to be built over nine years in the Myola valley close to Kuranda village. The nearest hospital would be the already overstretched one in Mareeba. So is the government demanding that the developer puts money into Mareeba hospital to increase the number of beds and range of facilities?

Not so far. In fact the solution proposed by the developer is to have just one doctor on site.

This is not enough to deal with the day to day medical needs of these many people (about twice the population of Kuranda village and Myola) in a high risk environment.

And this is not allowing for emergency care for disasters and flu epidemics- or outbreaks of mosquito borne illnesses such as dengue and malaria. All these infections could be transmitted easily and quickly in such a concentrated and transient population – and with inadequate medical care.

Now is time to speak up to ensure the health needs of both our overseas visitors and local residents are met. This development is too big and in the wrong place.

There will be 15 awards given out on the day across three categories, of which include the Car of the Show, the Bike of the Show and the People’s Choice of Bike and Car. If you want to participate in the show, registrations are from 7:30am onwards and are five dollars.

The Tablelands Car and Bike Show will run from 9am-2pm on Saturday, December 1 and tickets are five dollars per person, while children under the age of 12 can attend free of charge.

For those who get a bit peckish, there will also be food, drinks and a coffee van on-site.

Eacham Junior Rugby League hosted an inaugural Development Clinic for girls with an overwhelming attendance of fifty participants aged between ten and eighteen taking part.

Norths retain annual Cup Norths will retain the Bridgeman-Maher Cup for another year after a dominant 8 wicket win over Atherton at Loder Park.

The Cup which is contested each season at alternating venues is a tribute to two of the stalwarts of Far North Cricket (Darryl Bridgeman and Tom Maher), and celebrates the history of the competitive rivalry between the two clubs.

Atherton were sent in to bat first, and lost 3 early wickets before Paul Nasser and Greg Misener steadied things with a 69 run partnership. A direct hit by the Norths captain caught Paul out of his crease and proved the turning point in the match.

Greg Misener went on, putting on a classy batting display to top-score for the match with 68 off 72 balls including 10 cleanly hit fours. Dylan Pettingill supported Greg to form the only other partnership as Norths took Atherton’s final 6 wickets for 54.

Atherton welcomed the return of Luke Parnell and

Brendan Nasser to their ranks, and Luke was quick to stamp his mark on the game taking a wicket in his first over and dismissing both Norths openers in his 4 over spell. Despite a few chances, Atherton didn't take another wicket and Norths batsmen Angus Warnock and Chris Stanger made easy work of chasing down the total.

Supporters witnessed a couple of spectacular catches with Fred Pittorino taking a seemingly impossible diving catch to dismiss Norths Mitch Warnock, and Chris Stanger grabbing a well hit drive by Brendan Nasser around his shins at short cover.

Atherton are at home to Cassowary Coast on Saturday 24 November.

ON NOW! Outgoing Mareeba Gladiators President John Arcidiacono and Grounds Coordinator Denis McKinley are calling on the Mareeba community to get involved with the club for the upcoming 2019 season.

A less than stellar turnout was on hand for the Mareeba Gladiator’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday, adding further insult to injury in what has been a trying time for the club in 2018.

The purpose of Sunday’s AGM was to review this year’s order of business, which included on-field performance, sponsorship, the financial status and overall operation of the club.

Added to that, arguably the most important aspect of the meeting was the process of appointing a club President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Senior Committee for the upcoming 2019 season.

The necessary appointments were not achieved so the Mareeba Gladiators have scheduled another AGM in a fortnight.

Outgoing President John Arcidiacono said Sunday’s AGM was a disappointment, and he is calling on the Mareeba community to step up and get involved with the historic club.

“I was led to believe that there

was going to be more people attend our AGM, however, unfortunately we didn’t see the numbers we were hoping for,” he said.

“Because of that, we were unable to form a committee and fill the roles needed to run the club.”

Arcidiacono said he was unsure as to why the club has struggled in enticing the community to come forward and volunteer as committee members, however he is confident the club can move in a positive direction once a committee is officially formed.

“Once the key personnel are in place, we can immediately begin ironing out the areas of concern surrounding the club,” he said.

“It’s just about sitting down with the right people in conjunction with the Mareeba Leagues Club and discussing where we are heading as a club.”

The AGM also highlighted considerable financial losses for the club, but Arcidiacono said although it is of concern; there is no reason to hit the panic button.

“Every club has lean years and 2018 was ours, both in relation to on-field performance as well as the operation and organisation of the club,” he said.

“However as I said earlier, I believe once our committee is in place and our coaching situation is ratified, the Mareeba Gladiators will be set up for a successful 2019.

“We have great facilities, talent and history here and a strong club foundation should be the norm for a great rugby league town like Mareeba.”

Arcidiacono said any help from the community, whether in a full-time or part-time capacity is gladly welcomed.

“More hands make light work,” he said.

“For those interested in getting involved, feel free to contact me and I would be more than willing to sit down and discuss what our positions available entail and hopefully we can move this club forward.”

Club Grounds Coordinator

Denis McKinley echoed Arcidiacono’s comments, noting that ensuring the Gladiators’ longterm viability is something that should be at the top of the incoming committee’s priority list.

“We have lost that cohesion as a club somewhere along the line, and it’s paramount that community members step up and help out so that we have a strong and united voice as a club,” he said.

“We want to get back to a point where playing A-Grade becomes the ultimate goal for our junior players, and having stability in the senior ranks goes a long way to instilling that desire in our next generation.”

The next AGM will be held at the Mareeba Gladiators clubhouse on Tuesday, December 4 and will begin at 6pm.

Arcidiacono is taking all expressions of interest for the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and anyone wishing to be on the Senior Committee.
