Knuth’s milk bill By Justin Fris

MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has pledged to reinstall a ‘Fair Mark Milk Bill’ if reelected on January 31. Since 2000, Queensland dairy farm numbers have shed by almost 1000 and Mr Knuth said the future of the dairy is untenable, should current trends continue. “If we continue down this path, we will not

have a dairy industry,” he said. “The bill means that if farmers are paid a fair price for their milk (above the cost of production), then a ‘Fair Milk Mark’ will be placed on the milk bottle. “Already, it’s evident that the name ‘Malanda’ on milk labels has helped to boost milk sales.” Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) Vice-President Ross McInness said the current situation for dairy farmers is increasingly

painful. “At the moment, the majority of Queensland dairy farmers are receiving prices less than the true cost of production,” he said. “The situation is getting worse by the day. “That is why we are seeing more and more dairy farming families, investment and employment being forced out of our industry - and the ridiculous part of it is we are short of milk to meet the needs of Queenslanders.”

The Express also made contact with the other three Dalrymple candidates for their thoughts of the proposed bill. Greens candidate Valerie Weier said she supported the notion supported by Mr Knuth and said more support needed to be given to local farmers. “Our local farmers should be supported, celebrated and rewarded for what they do in our community,” she said. Help for cancer patients INTUATIVE thinking has led to a new program by Cancer Council Queensland, which will provide free wigs or turbans for patients during the entire length of their treatment. Widely regarded as one of the most distressing side effects of cancer, hair loss can be extremely traumatic for both patients and loved ones. As part of CCQ’s ‘Practical Support’ program, patients will be able to access their wig or turban at a multitude of locations. CCQ Spokeswoman Katie Cift said each year several people inquired about additional support, as they found their battle (naturally) distressing. “Last year our ESA Wig and Turban Service loaned out more than 902 wigs and 2087 turbans statewide,” she said. “Our Wig Loan Libraries are a tremendously warm and friendly environment where individuals come for an appointment with a fully trained volunteer, enjoy a coffee and chat, and walk away having had an enjoyable experience with a wig or turban that is perfect for them. “The Service is made up of a passionate community of volunteers and donors who dedicate their time, energy and goodwill to help those in need, ranging from people who sew turbans to those who share a wig they no longer need.” If you have a spare wig or turban (of which you no longer use) and feel it could assist someone battling cancer, you are encouraged to donate to this program. You can connect CCQ directly on 13 11 20 or alternatively, log onto: www.cancerqld.gov.au Wigs can temporarily ease some distress for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

THE 2015 Great Wheelbarrow Race was launched successfully last Monday at the Mareeba Turf Club. One of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year, this great event helps raise much needed funds for deserving local charities. Mareeba Shire Councillor Nipper Brown said he had seen the event go ahead in leaps and bounds since its inception in 2004. “The race has certainly evolved since then, with a lot of teams taking the opportunity to raise money for local charities,” he said. “The 2015 event will be held from May 15 to 17, starting from Mareeba and finishing at Chillagoe; a distance of some 140km. “Some teams go to remarkable lengths to raise money for their nominated charity during the lead-up to the race. “Last year, competitors raised a total of $435,000 for a range of charities, includ-

ing: ‘Make A Wish’ Foundation, Angel Flight, the Queensland Cancer Council, Ronald McDonald House, and the National Stroke Foundation. “This is a great event, because it brings the community together in a fun way to raise money for charity and it provides a real boost to those smaller towns like Dimbulah, Almaden and Chillagoe.” In 2015, the race will be run over the following three stages: Mareeba to Dimbulah (50km), Dimbulah to Almaden (60km) and Almaden to Chillagoe (30km). There are several different participation options available if you wish to take part in this year’s event. These options range from solo, team, school student and emergency services. As there is a large social component to the race, people are encouraged to think creatively and don costumes for the event. If you would like to nominate (yourself or a team) for the race, please visit: www.greatwheelbarrowrace.com,with nominations closing on April 24.

Paul Hoye and Member for Cook David Kempton are excited about the new track.

Cycle track links towns By Justin Fris

CYCLING on the Tablelands is set to receive further support, after Member for Cook David Kempton declared a new mountain bike track could connect Mareeba, Kuranda and Port Douglas together for the first time. The first stage of the project would see 195km of track constructed, connecting the following towns: Cairns, Kuranda, Speewah, Koah, Mareeba, Mount Molloy and Port Douglas. Mr Kempton said $325,000 in funding would be used to secure the track, which will include several economic benefits to Mareeba and surrounding townships. “I have been working on the Sunny Savanah project with the Mareeba Mountain Goats and council for months and am pleased to announce $325,000 in funding,” he said. “Rudi and Megan De Faveri have been the champions of this fantastic project. “Mountain bike riding has become a worldwide phenomenon and has huge tourist potential. I have seen the coffee shops, wineries and hotels on the Otago trail in New Zealand packed out by these intrepid adventurers. This trail will be a great boost to our recreational options and a win for the economy.” Mr De Faveri said he was delighted

that the wheels on the first stage of the project could begin to turn after the financial injection. “This is an idea we’ve been working on for a few years and David’s been instrumental to getting it off the ground,” he said. “This funding will allow us to get the first phase of the project up and running.” Cycling provides several economical benefits that people in the community can sometimes overlook. Cyclists often travel great distances to experience picturesque backdrops and are often prepared to spend substantially while they are in town. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said cycling was one of the fastest growing pursuits on the Tablelands. “Recreational cycling on the Tablelands is one of the biggest growing pursuits, with the Tablelands providing an opportunity for world class tracks,” he said. “The majority of cyclists are middle aged, wealthy and provide a tremendous boost to the local economy. “With the $325,000 from David Kempton, we will be able to connect Mareeba to Kuranda and Port Douglas. I’m delighted with it.” This injection has the potential to expand on last year’s success of the Crocodile Trophy, which was held in our region.

Shane Knuth with Atherton Tableland dairy farmers, who are determined to ensure a bright future.

Shane Knuth commits to fair milk bill for local farmers From Page 1 “We must ensure that they have a viable future. Malanda used to be the centre of dairy farming and the reduction since the year 2000 has been dramatic.” Weier said the initiative of the ‘Fair Mark Milk’ bill would give consumers a true indication on which companies cut a fair deal for the farmers. “The bill will identify which companies are prepared to pay the correct amount to farmers for their milk. “The cost of living is so tight for many people in the

community; sometimes they have no alternative and are forced to buy a cheaper brand. “We can grow everything we need to eat and drink in Australia. If we can improve the education from the top (government) down, people will be more informed about supporting local farmers.” Several attempts were made to attain feedback from candidates Liz Schmidt (LNP) and Leanne Kettleton (ALP) on their views of the bill, however both responses were not received by our print deadline. Mr Knuth should know by Sunday morning if his bill can be realised.

STATE ELECTION – JANUARY 31

Barron River Electorate...

PUP CANDIDATE: Andrew

Schebella

‘I want to focus on making our roads safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians’ PALMER United candidate for Barron River Andrew Schebella says he is intently focussed on education, roads and tourism during his campaign and beyond. Mr Schebella, who grew up in South Australia’s Mallee region, has spent time living in a variety of states across the nation during his life. Ahead of January 31, Mr Schebella said he felt ‘compelled’ to fight for the Far North and seek further funding to improve liveability. “I feel compelled to fight for FNQ and its constituents,” he said. “I will not tire until I have obtained more recognition for the vast amounts the region contributes to the States’ coffers and seek more funding to improve all our livelihoods and that of our treasured natural assets. “I do not want to see our region continue to be trickle fed funding from the southern corner, as we have seen under both the ALP and LNP. “As the Palmer United Party sitting member for Barron River, I will achieve a realistic plan for our future that meets growth projections; and includes infrastructure, tourism, education and health. “I want the region to be recognised for its ability to plan for the future.”

At the 2013 Federal Election, PUP was competitive in several Barron River booths for the seat of Leichardt. Polling 7,326 votes (8.55 per cent), the party would be keen to gain a further foothold into the community, with Mr Schebella’s vision for the future. In a final message to residents within the Barron River electorate, Mr Schebella said there were several key issues that were essential for the region. Making our roads safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike; as well as flood proofing some of our major artery roads linking the northern beaches and communities beyond. Expanding JCU campus and increasing student accommodation. Promoting tourism and business investment thus creating apprenticeships and employment, while preserving and protecting our important world heritage and UNESCO listed natural assets. Improve our health services in all regional areas of Northern Queensland and attracting more specialised services to the region.

GRN CANDIDATE: NOEL

GREENS candidate for Barron River Noel Castley-Wright has travelled the world and achieved in several industries. A man who is passionate about preserving the natural wildlife, Mr Castley-Wright is a former film director/producer, who has enjoyed stints in both London and Los Angeles (to name a few places). After growing up in Katanning (in WA’s great southern region) and learning the importance of hard

CASTLEY-WRIGHT

work, Mr Castley-Wright is bringing his experience to the Barron River electorate. “Since I’ve been back in Australia, I’ve noticed we have gone from a community-based mentality to a people lacking empathy mentality; particularly in parliament,” he said. “In conversations with people I’ve spoken to while out and about, people don’t like career politicians.” In his spare time, Mr CastleyWright enjoys anything to do with nature. He enjoys jet skiing, snorkelling and community outings with his family. Barron River has proven to be a fruitful electorate for the Greens, who typically poll extremely well in the primary vote. In the 2012 state election, they polled 2,736 votes (9.1 per cent of the primary vote), which would have been a welcomed result for both party officials and supporters alike. This positive result was continued into the 2013 Federal Election in Leichardt, particularly at the Kuranda polling booth (one of Barron River’s major booths). The Greens only fell 258 votes

short of winning the Kuranda booth primary vote; and with dissolution of both major parties at an all time high, Mr Castley-Wright has a great opportunity to further increase their foothold in Barron River. Ahead of the January 31 poll, Mr Castley-Wright would like to assure residents of the Barron River electorate that: • If the Aquis project is approved, it is both environmentally and economically sustainable, and that the electorate is not expected to pay the cost of the infrastructure that will be necessary to support the development. • Protect the Great Barrier Reef and maintain its world heritage listing by continuing to actively oppose any actions that threaten its future health, including the ongoing and proposed ocean dumping of dredge spoil from Trinity inlet and Half Moon Creek. • Promote the use of rooftop solar energy in all new buildings constructed within our region. • Promote foreign film production in our region.

STATE ELECTION – JANUARY 31

Barron River Electorate...

ALP CANDIDATE: CRAIG

CRAWFORD

‘Without the knowledge of secure employment, the economy grinds to a halt’ ALP candidate for Barron River Craig Crawford has assured the Barron River electorate that he is committed to the employment needs of Queenslanders. Originally from Victoria, Mr Crawford works as a paramedic on the frontline of duty in Cairns. Along with his family, he loves spending time in his garden and renovating his family home. Involved in the emergency services industry since 1987, Mr Crawford has achieved highly and given quality support to those who need it. Barron River is traditionally an ALP held seat, with the LNP breaking through for a rare victory in 2012. Prior to this, the ALP had held the seat firmly since 2001. Recording only 27.8 per cent of the primary vote (before preferences) would have been a difficult pill for the ALP to swallow, given its dominance in previous elections. The ALP rebounded slightly in 2013, polling well in several Barron River booths (es-

pecially Trinity Beach) within the Federal electorate of Leichardt. In a final statement to residents within the electorate, Mr Crawford said he was committed toward the following outcomes: “As the Labor candidate for Barron River, I am committed to restoring frontline education services with more teachers at Redlynch, Kuranda, Yorkeys Knob and Trinity Beach. “For Smithfield, more teachers and a full-time guidance officer. “I will work towards restoring frontline health services by introducing 30 nurses to the Cairns and Hinterland Health Services Area. “Labor will spend $100 million on the Great Barrier Reef to improve water quality within the reef area. “Labor has a four year, $40 million plan to revitalise the state’s tourism sector. “This will boost the Queensland tourism industry to support jobs.”

TROUT

‘I want to make Barron River the most liveable electorate in Queensland’ LNP Member for Barron River Michael Trout said is keen to ‘continue the job’ and make Barron River the most liveable electorate in Queensland. Fulfilling pre-poll commitments at the Cairns Showgrounds last Saturday, Mr Trout told The Express he was keen to place business and jobs at the top of his list. Originally from Chinchilla, Mr Trout spent his formative years on a cattle property; where a thirst for hard work has translated into success in both business and tourism. “I’ve had great satisfaction during my term in seeing the rural firies in Kuranda being listened too,” he said. “After addressing issues from the Ted Malone report, they are no longer answerable to the city and now have their own assistant commissioner.” Mr Trout won Barron River in 2012 with a strong primary vote (45.71 per cent), despite the ALP having held the seat since 2001. As an electorate, Barron River is quite complex; several booths can swing fiercely, so Mr Trout and fellow candidates will be campaigning earnestly until the ballet boxes close on Saturday. Upon reflection of his current term, Mr Trout said he was glad the tender facility at Yorkey’s Knob had come on leaps and bounds, despite inherited debt constraints. Viewing hospitality as a lynchpin for jobs in the electorate, Mr Trout said the construction of the AQUIS resort and further financial support for the Kuranda region would be essential for creating local positions and attracting lengthier holidays for tourists in the Far North. Election Day will be very busy for Mr Trout, who will begin in Kuranda and travel down to Clifton Beach and Redlynch toward the middle part of the day.

Addressing members at a canegrower meeting last Wednesday, Agricultural Minister John McVeigh said he was confident local canegrowers would have their interests met. With the Premier throwing his support, Mr McVeigh said he would ensure ‘grower choice’ sugar marketing would be protected, should the LNP be re-elected on January 31. “We’re upping the ante,” he said. “If the millers refuse to come to the table, we will legislate.” These sentiments were echoed by Member for Cook David Kempton, who said he was keen to maintain a fair go for local farmers. “I will stand up for my local farmers every time against monopolistic practices of big companies,” bassi, Rajinder Singh (directors/growers) and he said. The Express also spent time with local cane- Bronwyn Dwyer (Tablelands Canegrower Mangrower stakeholders Claude Santucci, Rico Ca- ager) last Wednesday.

Mr Cabassi said he was ‘confident’ after the announcement that local canegrowers would receive the support they needed.

“If it all goes ahead (along with LNP re-elected) it will be good news for local canegrowers,” he said. In a policy document provided to The Express, local canegrowers clearly outline their opinion on how the Newman Government (or potentially Palaszczuk Government) could improve sugar marketing. Provide genuine market choice by giving growers the opportunity to determine how GEI sugar is sold, along with mills given rights on determining how MEI sugar is priced and subsequently sold. Define a clear difference between GEI sugar (raw sugar which bears price exposure under the cane supply agreement and MEI sugar (total of mill-produced sugar, where the mill encompasses the price exposure). Establish an enforceable policy framework that encourages both confidence and investment for local growers and millers into the future. Local growers were adamant that despite these requests, their approach would not change the current ownership of sugar in Queensland.

MAREEBA Shire Council awarded some of the town’s finest residents during a special ceremony on Monday. The event culminated in Sylvia Cockburn being awarded ‘Citizen of the Year’ due to her outstanding community spirit. Based in Chillagoe, Sylvia has spent countless hours assisting the local community through fundraising, volunteering at the local library and coordinating Chillagoe’s ANZAC Day ceremony. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore praised Sylvia’s input into the community, which has lasted several decades. “Ms Cockburn was given the honour in recognition of the strong sense of community she has shown over many decades including fundraising for various charities and the organizing the annual Chillagoe Anzac Day event,” Mayor Gilmore said. “Sylvia has a natural graciousness which she extends to everyone she deals with, both socially and professionally.” Monique Ebner (who was one of Mareeba SHS’s highest achievers in 2014) was announced as ‘Young

Citizen of the Year’, after her sizable impact in both events and fundraising. “Monique was recognised for her leadership role at Mareeba State High School, her contribution to a host of community events, her participation with organisations such as Ronald McDonald House and her assistance in fundraising for many charities,” Mayor Gilmore said. Along with 13 residents becoming full Australian citizens, several other individuals were recognised for high achievement. Mutchilba State School/Dimbulah State School tied for the ‘Community Event of the Year’, while Gilbert Teitzel was recognised with the ‘Development of Commerce and Industry Award’. Michael Graham’s commitment to the environment was recognised, along with the Mareeba Multicultural Festival’s commitment to the community. Proposal to reduce youth unemployment By Justin Fris

DR Geraldine McGuire is deeply concerned about the current rate of youth unemployment in Malanda and on the Tablelands. So instead of sitting back and waiting for current trends to worsen, Dr McGuire has led a consortium to help reduce unemployment, through jobs in agriculture. The Malanda Chamber of Commerce (of which Dr McGuire is the president) is proposing the formation of a new rural entrepreneurial hub, dubbed the ‘Australian Tropical Agricultural Precinct’. In a presentation to members of the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) during last Thursday’s ordinary council meeting, Dr McGuire broke down the essentials for the room. In a passionate address, Dr McGuire said that youth unemployment had slumped to 21.4 per cent; bestowing FNQ with the ninth highest unemployment rate in the nation. Stage one of the precinct would take approximately take two years to complete. The chamber would work closely with the TRC and determine the ulitimate utilisation of facilities. Further stages would see the precinct expand and increase the ability to keep young people employed on the Tablelands. Dr McGuire also spoke with The Express after her presentation and said the decision to form the precinct proposal had taken several years. “This precinct proposal has been 10

years of community consultation in the making,” she said. “If no one steps up to retain youth entrepreneurial employment in the region, certain towns will cease to exist in the future. “A common theme during our discussion with stakeholders is that the industries of agriculture, forest and fisheries are the biggest sources of employment in the region. “The precinct would offer key services and facilities for young entrepreneurs, along with being strategically located in the centre of Malanda.” Dr McGuire said she had worked closely with both Nicole van Beuningen (TRC Senior Advisor Economic Development & Communication) and Ian Church (TRC CEO) in putting the proposal before council. ‘We are hoping to have a positive response (after report is delivered) from council by May on our proposal,” she said. “The chamber is also prepared to put in funding for the precinct.” Although an ‘A-political’ organisation, Dr McGuire said the chamber would welcome feedback and support from all candidates within the Dalrymple electorate. “I met with LNP candidate Liz Schmidt about a year ago and she took a walk with us around the proposed precinct site,” she said. “We would be happy to work with any political candidate who is interested in our proposal, although we have currently had no interaction from any other candidates.”

Questioning Regional funding 21/01/15’s headline ‘Airport Upgrade’. Wow, must be an election coming on. Prior to the demise of Ms Bligh, there was a big song and dance at the Mareeba Airport about funding millions; that never were. Here we go again. Only this time, it has the morally corrupt proviso... That although the money is "secured" by the Royalties for Regions program...it will only happen if Kempton is re-elected. If it smells like a bribe, reads like a bribe..its a bribe. So although the Royalties for Regions has secured the amount in question, and the LNP get back into power, but without Kempton, it just isnt going to happen.! Que ? Sounds like a very suspect funding regime to me. Such is our "democracy" and the people who work it for their advantage. And if by any chance the money does become available, I do hope the council this time around keep the "engineering consultants" (that designed the Suez Canal right beside the runway), away from anywhere near the place.

an area and promote a project to support that industry, for example the revitalisation of the Cooktown foreshore for tourism and the upgrade of the Mareeba airport. It is my belief as the Peninsula Development road is upgraded the transport costs to the Torres Strait will reduce. We are also transitioning many of the infrastructure and services delivered by the Government to community ownership; housing, primary health care, store and business ownership are a few examples. Finally I want to see better services and less red tape. I’ve provided access to water at Lakeland creating jobs, a birthing centre at Weipa and Cooktown, and a dialysis unit at Bamaga so people needing medical support can stay in their towns with their families. I want to continue with this work and the many relationships I have built with all communities in Cook. I am confident the LNP will be returned to Government; and I ask you to think carefully about having a Labor member in Parliament representing Cook. I am grateful for all the support I have received over the past few weeks as I’ve travelled around the electorate.

Richard Rudd, Mareeba

Final message to the electorate I am seeking a further term as your State MP at next Saturday’s election; and I need your support. Cook is the most diverse and exciting electorate in Queensland and presents enormous challenges as we fight for services and infrastructure most Queenslanders take for granted. That is why I am working so closely with all the Mayors, community leaders and traditional owner groups to build our roads, bridges airports and barge landing facilities. I want to see all weather access to every community by road, landing barge or airstrip. Already we are sealing the Peninsula Development Road, upgrading Kowanyama and Lockhart Airstrips and have upgraded barge facilities on all the Islands. The next challenge is getting the economy going and employment. My plan is to identify which of the four pillars, construction, agriculture, tourism and mining is relevant to

KAP have achieved nothing A professor of Economics at Queensland University stated on ABC radio (18/1/15) that the Katter Australia Party and the Palmer United Party have no policies that can be implemented. He said that their only reason for being is that they have a dislike for the major parties. I agree, as they are not there to achieve for their electorates. KAP has not achieved anything of substance so have no history to draw upon. Dalrymple is over the rhetoric of minor parties. The electorate needs a member of substance. Vote for the person who can actually achieve for the area. Having seen how preferences gave first prize to the one who came second last election, I will be voting (1) only. B.J. Prescott, Atherton

How will Palaszczuk pay? Annastacia Palaszczuk announced on Friday that the ALP would merge Ergon Energy, Energex and Powerlink and use the profits to pay down Government debt by 12 billion dollars over 10 Years. There is two glaring problems with this Policy: 1. Energex’s after tax profit 2013/2014 is $508.000.000. Ergon Energy’s after tax profit 2013/2014 is $403.000.000. Powerlink’s after tax profit is less than $1.000.000 (a total of approx $912.000.000). According to Annastacia Palaszczuk’s figures, she will need to have 1.2 billion dollars per year over the ten year period to pay back the amount she has committed to. 1.2 billion dollars per year is a pittance of what is needed to pay down the debt and dramatically reduce the huge amount of Interest that the government is having to pay daily. 2. Over 700 MILLION dollars in After Tax Profits from Energex and Ergon Energy was used by the LNP for the (CSO) Community Service Obligation, last financial year. That is the amount of money that subsidised every business and every private person’s power bill that live outside of the South East corner of QLD; so that they pay no more for their power than those that live in the South East corner. Those people that live and operate outside the South East corner of Queensland ,(this is the area from just north of Gympie to the Cape and island communities in the north of the State) and those communities to the west all have their power subsidised by the State Government. What does this mean? Every one outside of the South East corner has their power per kilo watt charge subsided by the Community Service Obligation Commitment provided by the QLD Government This means that every business and individual paying a power bill will now, if the ALP get back into power (pay the full price for their electricity). There will be NO SUBSIDY, as the ALP will not have any money left out of the after Tax profits of the energy providers. There needs to be in excess of 700 million dollars needed to fund the CSO.

3. Where is Annastacia Palaszczuk going to get the money to fund all her promises that she has made during the election? Russell O’Doherty, Chair Daintree Power Committee, Cow Bay

Blackmail at it’s worst Campbell Newman and his LNP colleagues have resorted to blackmail on asset sales(leasing). All monies promised for infrastructure etc, will only become available if we privatise all the peoples owned assets first. Now they have reached the height of hypocrisy, by threatening the people of the Cook electorate that if they do not vote David Kempton back in, all promises for the Cook electorate will be terminated.(Front page of The Express,Wed January 21) The $13 million for the upgrade of the airport will not be made available unless Mr. Kempton gets back in. If this is not a case of holding a gun to the head of all the voters in the Cook electorate, I don’t know what is. So desperate have they become, that they have resorted to ultimate blackmail tactics out of an Isis terror hand book. The Cook electorate was given millions of dollars for the airport upgrade prior to the last election and Mr. Kempton and the LNP took the money away. If it wasn’t for the efforts of the last Member for Cook and the previous One Nation Member for the Tablelands seat, (plus present Member of Dalrymple), Lotus Glen prison would never have eventuated. The prison has to a large extent saved the Tableland economy from sinking into the abyss; as it employs many locals and is a lifeline for local businesses in Atherton and Mareeba. Mr. Kempton and his party want to of course sell the prison as well. The LNP pretender for the Dalrymple electorate on ABC radio stated, that Dalrymple has had no representation for a number of years. What arrogance! No matter on what side of the political fence one resides, one cannot find a harder working member than Shane Knuth. We can well remember when the old Tablelands electorate was in the hands of the the then National Party. The tablelands was a wasteland, with nothing done for decades. Jerry Micola, Tolga

Kerry Linwood’s (The Express 22/1/2015) juxtaposition of dog rego and cyclist rego was both funny and valid: if dog rego is practical and achievable, and it is, then so toO is cyclist rego. Cyclists have exclusive use of some very expensive cycle paths and bike lanes, plus free and unfettered access to all the traffic lanes the rest of the community has to pay to use. It is plainly obvious that many cyclists have plenty of cash; with bikes, accessories and outfits costing thousands. There is simply no valid reason why cyclists shouldn’t contribute as cyclists to the extra costs created by cycling: cyclist registration is all about sharing the load while sharing the road. Finally, food for thought: if the bicycle was first invented today it would be classified as a ‘wheeled toy’ and, like the skateboard, only allowed on roads with no marked centre-line and a speed limit of 50km/h or less and not at night.

entertainment RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

See Heavy Brown Mullet live The Atherton International Club continue their top class entertainment by hosting top Cairns outfit, Heavy Brown Mullet (HBM). Heavy Brown Mullet have been delivering their unique blend of old school rock and modern classics for 10 years around the Far North region. In pubs, private parties, (and would you believe weddings?) HBM will leave you screaming for more. If you like your music dished out with attitude and overdrive, yet can appreciate the subtleties of musicianship and harmony then HBM is for you. Live at the Atherton International Club on February 6.

There are three exciting new movies opening at Mareeba's Rising Sun cinema tomorrow, Thursday January 29, including the exceptional Australian family film PAPER PLANES. with Sam Worthington Also new on screen are two spectacular dramas, both based on true stories. Russell Crowe's acclaimed drama that pays homage to Gallipoli and the Anzac tradition, THE WATER DIVINER, and a mesmerising drama set during the second world war entitled THE IMITATION GAME. To coincide with the screening of PAPER PLANES, Rising Sun Cinema is offering a very special family deal of only $36.00 for a family of four, for the week that this film screens. The special $36 family deal must include at least 2 children and 2 adults, or 1 adult and 3 children of school going age or younger. Screening for one last time this Wednesday, January 28, are PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR , the excellent musicals INTO THE WOODS and ANNIE.

An impressionable 12 year old ready to discover the world, a grieving father intent on shutting the world out and a madcap granddad keen to embrace it are the three key characters in this rousing and heartwarming family film in which winning, losing and family are everything. Robert Connolly's thoroughly enjoyable film, which he co-wrote with Steve Worland (Bootmen, 2000), economically tells a story that is simple, but not simplistic. It's an uplifting coming of age story about dreams and one in which the father son relationship plays a vital part. Connolly's Paper Planes works on every level and soars to delivers its positive and inspiring message to young and old.

THE IMITATION GAME

Against considerable odds and obstacles, English mathematician, Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), leads a top secret

team in the English countryside that cracks the German's fearsome Enigma code during World War II. His success is estimated to have shortened the war by two years and saved 14 million lives, yet Turing's sexuality overshadows his achievements in the conservative era of his time. (Based on a true story.)

PAPER PLANES

Twelve-year-old Dylan (Ed Oxenbould) lives with his father Jack (Sam Worthington) in the West Australian outback. One day at school Dylan discovers he is extremely good at making and flying paper planes. While attempting to refine and develop his newly realised ability, Dylan finds himself caught up in the world of competitive paper-plane making, leading to new friendships, new rivalries and new revelations about his own family. Review by Louise Keller:

THE WATER DIVINER

When four years after the battle of Gallipoli his wife Eliza (Jacqueline Mackenzie) begs him to bring back their sons, Aussie father of three, Connor (Russell Crowe) travels to Turkey to search for them - or their remains. En route, he encounters Turkish war widow Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko) and Turkish Major Hasan (Yilmaz Erdogan), both of whom are surprisingly helpful. Not so helpful is British Captain Charles Brindley (Dan Wyllie). (Inspired by a true story.)

CDRL draw offers polarising schedule for local sides Mareeba will face a tough draw in their quest for a winning season

BRUTAL stretches of away matches in 2015 for both Atherton (Roosters) and Mareeba (Gladiators) has dominated local discussion, after an initial release of the CDRL fixtures. Between rounds six and sixteen, the Roosters will only play at home twice, with two blocks of three successive away matches punctuating the stretch. Currently, Mareeba will play their last home game in the first week of July, finishing their season with the final six matches on the road. Both club and league officials spoke with The Express and suggested that a home game earlier in the year may be eventually swapped, so the Gladiators get a break from travel. The Roosters, coming off a dismal 1-19 season, will need to make the most of the opening third of the season. With four of their first five matches at home (Southern Suburbs, Edmonton, Innisfail and Ivanhoes), the Roosters would be keen to ink some early wins, before the schedule takes a

turn for the worse. In round six, the Roosters begin their brutal away stretch, travelling to Brothers, Kangaroos and Mossman/Port Douglas. Two home games are distanced sizably apart until the end of July, when the Roosters end their nightmare, with trips to Edmonton, Ivanhoes and Innisfail in successive weeks. The end of the season is much kinder however, with the Roosters playing four of their five final games at home. Mareeba would be pleased with the majority of their fixture, especially in the first few weeks of the season. Two of their first three are at Davies Park, with an away trip to Ivanhoes in round two sandwiched in between. May matches will prove crucial for the Gladiators, with four out of their five matches at home. Wins will be crucial as the weather and injuries play their part. Although it is one notorious stretch of matches which leaps off the page if you are a Gladiators fan. After playing Mossman/Port Douglas in

round 13, the Gladiators face six away matches (Yarrabah, Atherton, Kangaroos, Southern Suburbs, Tully and Edmonton) in a row, with only a bye in round 16 giving them a break. Mareeba Gladiators first grade coach David Grainer said he is stressing the importance of winning round one against Innisfail. “I’m really trying to get the boys up to win our first game against Innisfail,” he said. “They are still the benchmark being last year’s grand finalists. “Week by week, we are keen to get the little things right and bring back culture and the right attitude while wearing the jersey. “Ideally, we would be in the top five by mid-season, given all our home matches early on in the year.” Grainer also praised the inclusion of two new recruits, Mikey Hauraki (prop) and Matt Laumea (second row) who have joined the group at pre-season training.

EVERGREEN paceman Brett ‘Stretch’ Brewer is never far from the action when he pads up for the Mareeba Bandits each week. A journey which began in school cricket, Brewer is now one of several seniors teaching Mareeba’s finest up and coming cricketers. Brewer made his senior debut at 17 and has had a successful career at local level. His bowling is fierce and disciplined and a true asset for his side. “The key is always to get the batsman to play,” he said. “I watch how he handles certain deliveries and then adjust. “If he is defensive, I like to offer a few ones for him to play at. If he is keen to play some shots, I like to pitch a few deliveries wide enough for him to have a dab at.” Typically batting toward the end of the innings, Brewer provides a terrific education for his fellow bowlers at the crease. Don’t be fooled however; Brewer is more than capable with the willow and often plays several extravagant shots. “Toward the end of an innings, it’s vital to keep the run-rate up,” he said. Away from the crease, Brewer likes to spend quality time with family and friends, along with working on his house. Brewer said there are several people who have helped him along during his career and he wanted to acknowledge their input. “I’d like to thank Ray Gear, Wes Firth, Noel Sloane and Mark Bestmann,” he said. “All have helped me a lot during my career.”

Six-a-side football’s showcase in Mareeba MAREEBA United’s social six-a-side football competition came to a close last Friday night, with grand finals played across six divisions. The matches were tight and the talent across all grand finals was nothing short of top notch. In the A-grade Men’s final, Los Torros broke through for a satisfying 6-4 victory over the Road Runners. Both B and C grade men’s finals were extremely tight; with a classy finish the ultimate difference in finding a winner. The Benders took out B-grade with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Multiple, while Relations needed a late goal in extra time to defeat The Guards, 3-2. Despite being hot favourites going into the youth final, the Barra’s were stung 3-1 by the Green Machine. Footloose are the new queens of A-grade ladies football in our town, after a tense 3-2 victory over Heatwave. In B-grade, Gypses were able to topple the Ray White Rebels 5-4. The six-a-side season was the biggest hosted by MUFC, with over 200 players participating. (Left from top) Green Machine, Gypses and Relations all celebrate after their fine wins on Friday night. Of all results, Green Machines’s was the most unexpected, but duly welcomed by Mareeba’s football community. (Right from top) The Benders had to fight hard for their victory over The Guards; and looked relieved when they gathered for their post-game photo. Footloose cut some fine moves in their victory and were all smiles after winning the A-grade ladies crown.

MAREEBA basketball is set for another fantastic year, with club officials keen for new players to join their warm community. The club will be hosting their annual sign-on day over February 5 and 6, with trial matches set to take place in weeks leading up to the winter season. Mareeba Basketball Association senior official Silvano Ruggeri said participation rates had in-

creased during 2014. With our indoor facilities, it definitely minimises cancellations due to weather,” he said. “Basketball is a good sport, undercover from the elements and is competitive. “We also have a series of carnivals throughout the year, where we will pick Mareeba’s finest players in all groups and travel to Atherton, Cairns, Port Douglas and Mulgrave.” If you would like more information about the association, phone Silvano Ruggeri on 0437 455 888.

MAREEBA held on for a thrilling ten run victory over Norths on Sunday at Kerribee Park, inspired by several players in their early teens. The Bandits made 135 during their allotted 30 overs, with the Ford father and son combination rescuing the innings, when all seemed lost. Chasing 136 off 180 deliveries for victory, the visitors began brightly and were scoring at over five an over. However 13-year old bowler Liam Bombadieri burst to life in his opening spell, taking charge with two wickets

Along with Lachlan Ford who battled hard all day, experienced bowler Shane Gesell chimed in with a sublime 5/14 off five overs. Reeling at 9/97 after 24 overs, Norths threw caution to the wind and almost stole the game away from the Bandits. Tom Watson made a sterling 28 (42 deliveries) in the final six overs as the visitors got the run-rate back within the jaws of victory. Just as some locals may have reached to bite their fingernails, Ford pierced the stumps with a peach of a delivery to seal a memorable win. The home side had been forced to make five changes, but the reshuffle only enhanced them.
