Fight to save kindy By Rebecca Wallis
THE future of Dimbulah’s kindy is hanging perilously in the balance, despite an inpouring of donations from local individuals and businesses. The service, which has been operating in the town for over 25 years, was almost unable to go ahead this year due to a lack of students, equalling a lack of funding. But in true Dimbulah style, the community came together collectively raising around $5000 to make up the shortfall, allowing it to open its doors this week. The celebration could be short-lived, however, as the kindy may not be able to continue past its first term. “Back in December due to the numbers it looked like the kindy was going to have to close,” said Mareeba Shire Councillor Nipper Brown who has rallied with the community in a personal capacity. “Then when it got out to the community a number of organisations came forward with donations.”
Big week for local prep kids By Rebecca Wallis
QT’S Early Learning Centre director Siale Jenkins (pictured) said a tearful goodbye on Friday to her kindy kids that this week took their first steps into the real world by starting school for the very first time. Little Mirriam Foo (pictured) is only four and half but can’t wait to get started in Prep at St Thomas’s School in Mareeba this week. She is one of hundreds of kids all over the Tablelands who started school on Monday.
“I’m really excited,” said Mirriam who has been at QT’s since she was a toddler. “I can’t wait to have a go of everything.” Mrs Jenkins said she formed a strong attachement with each of the children at the centre and was sad to see them leave but at the same time was proud to see them go on with the skills they learned at the centre. “It’s really sad when they leave but they always come back to say hi and tell us how they’re going,” she said. “The kindy program here really prepares them for prep.”
Those organisations included Dimbulah Lions Club, Dimbulah CWA, Mutchilba Community Centre, Nugget of the North and Dimbulah Soccer Club as well as private donations from individuals. The contributions were enough to open the kindy for the first term which will cater for seven children, but the community is now fighting hard to scrape together enough funds to see the service through till the end of the year. It is thought there are low numbers of kindy aged kids this year in Dimbulah. but that in the future the numbers will rise enough to make the service more financially viable. Cr Brown said if the doors close, it will be difficult to re-open. “The service is government funded but only based on the numbers, so when the numbers drop off, so does the money,” he said. “It may have to close its doors, but I’m optimistic.” Cr Brown said the kindy closing could put off cont. $30,000 donated towards new machine at hospital By Rebecca Wallis
THE Mareeba Friends of the FNQ Hospital Foundation recently handed over around $30,000 towards vital equipment to Mareeba Hospital, the latest in a long line of donations. The community organisation has been operating for over 10 years and in that time has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment and items to the hospital including televisions and the recently completed $100,000 children’s playground. The latest donation was for a portable ultrasound device improving the recognition of abdominal trauma, heart conditions and the early detection of bone trauma for example after a fall or accident when an x-ray will be delayed. The probes also allow for quick look obstetrics ultrasounds. “The Mareeba Friends is a great way for the community to connect with the hospital and they know we’re there to support them, said chairperson for the group Ida Portella. “Whatever they need, they come to us and let us know and if we’re happy with it and if we feel it’s going to improve patient services, then we say let’s

do it. A lot of the group’s funds come from private donations, Rotary and Bendigo Bank but each year the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association hold a fundraising dinner with all proceeds going to the foundation.
In 2017 they raised over $18,500. They currently have on order two chairs for the palliative care rooms to make life comfortable for those sitting with dying loved ones. They are also waiting for a cold cuddle cot sleeping system which allows
parents to stay with their babies a little longer after they have passed away. “In the last six months we’ve spent well over $160,000 at the hospital, said Ms Portella. “Queensland Health know we are here and we do care about our hospital
and by giving to our hospital it’s great for our community. We’re all going to beneďŹ t from it.â€? The Mareeba Friends of the FNQ Hospital Foundation is currently looking for a new project and considering buying some dialysis units, refurbishing the
chapel or buying an outdoor kitchen. “We’re working with the hospital at the moment looking at a range of things, said Ms Portella. “These are all things that enhance the patience services. If there’s more that we can do, we will do it.
Former health CEO Bob Norman dies
JOURNALIST Rebecca Wallis
Bob Norman.
THE death of former Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board Chair Bob Norman shocked the Tablelands last week as he was remembered for all he did in advocating for upgrades to health facilities in Chillagoe, Atherton and Dimbulah. The 71-year-old was pronounced dead at his Redlynch home early on Thursday morning. His death comes just two years after he stepped
down as chairman of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service after serving in the position since 2012. Current chair of the health board Clive Skarott released a statement the same day of Mr Norman’s passing. “It is with sadness and regret that I heard of the passing of former Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board Chair Bob Norman earlier to-
day,â€? he said. Mr Skarott said he and Mr Norman shared a personal passion for the regional facilities and said he was “instrumental in securing much needed upgrades at Chillagoe as well as being an advocate for the refurbishment or redevelopment of our Atherton, Dimbulah and Cow Bay services. “The work in this area is coming to fruition with the ofďŹ cial opening of our
new Dimbulah facility last December and the Atherton Hospital redevelopment progressing in 2018, Mr Skarott said. “Through his work as Chair and his passion for the improvement of health services in the Far North, Bob leaves a lasting legacy to the community and I’d like to extend my sincerest condolences to his family, friends and all who knew him at this time.

Kuranda Village furniture upgrade WORK will soon commence to restore the street furniture and signs in Kuranda back to their former glory. Blacksmith artist Hans Pehl, who originally created the unique masterpieces will begin restoring the iron fixtures next week. Mayor Tom Gilmore is excited to see the project come to fruition after months of planning. “It will really enhance the atmosphere and aesthetics of the village,” Cr Gilmore said. To enable the works to be carried out, some of the masterpieces will

to keep the community abreast of the developments with a plan in place to fundraise hard between now and the start of the second term. A Valentine Dinner Dance has been organised for February 17 from 6pmmidnight at the Dimbulah Hall. Kindy is a vital service DIMBULAH’S new kindy director Mary Treanor and co-educator Elena McDermott say that if the facility closes, the children will miss out on some vital development. “As far as a small community aspect, those children might never have socialised before. Some of them are coming from quite a way away and they might not have peers that they socialise with.
It’s not just the learning school routines and getting ready for school it’s getting together with peers and learning those skills,” said Mrs Treanor. “The kids would miss out and not receive any of that if this closed because it’s the only one in the area. Mareeba is too far to go every day.” Mrs McDermott said Prep teachers can see a big difference in the kids
that have gone to kindy and the ones that haven’t. “They (the kids that have been to kindy) know routine, they know how to use a pencil, they know how to use scissors,” she said. “It makes their life so much easier going into school.” Children have been enrolled at the kindy from as far away as Chillagoe and Almaden.
Joe Paronella sets record straight RISING unrest among ratepayers within the Tablelands Regional Council shire caused mayor Joe Paronella to release a statement last week setting the record straight. Responding to “a number of letters to the editor recently”, Cr Paronella wrote at length refuting claims that councillors are
need to be temporarily removed while other work will occur on site. The work will include restoring and repairing the iron benches, rubbish bins, street signs, bollards and railings in the village. “It is a much needed revitalisation and we can’t wait to see the iron work restored to its original state,” Cr Gilmore said. “The unique street furniture and signage add so much character to the village and it’s important that we maintain these assets for the residents and the many tourists who visit the village each year.”
an opinion. A lot of Council time has been wasted clarifying inaccurate, false or deliberate comments.” Cr Paronella went on to state that TRC is one of the most transparent and open council’s in Queensland and that all allegations of wrong doing were always referred to the appropriate authorities. He also stated
that the idea councillors are being gagged is false and that, in his opinion, those comments were politically motivated. “Our councillors meet with members of the community as individuals, organisations or groups on a daily basis,” he said. “We engage through face to face meetings, attend-
ance at community events, speaking at public events and actively participating on committees. Putting out statements that councillors are not engaging is again absolutely false and makes me wonder about the motivation of such statements.” The full statement can be read online at www.trc. qld.gov.au

Bunya Pines to be removed FOLLOWING the fall of a Bunya Pine (Araucaria Bidwillii Hook) at Park Avenue, Malanda last year, a qualified arborist has assessed the condition of the fourteen remaining Bunya Pines on the stretch of road from the Malanda Falls Caravan Park to the Bowls Club, with seven trees requiring urgent removal due to poor health. “We put community
safety first and therefore these trees will be removed as a priority within the next couple of weeks, said Mayor Joe Paronella. “We definitely don’t want to have any accidents along this stretch due to a tree fall. The independent arborist report indicates that the remaining seven Bunya Pines are likely to require removal over the next five to ten years.

Look after Lake Eacham this Australia Day LAKE Eacham is a national treasure and a fun family destination, and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will again be working with Queensland Police to make sure visitors keep it that way on Australia Day. QPWS Acting Senior Ranger Miki Bradley said large numbers of locals and overseas visitors flocked to the deep, cool lake in Crater Lakes National Park near Atherton during hot spells and on public holidays. “Everyone’s welcome, but bad behaviour isn’t, Ms Bradley said. “Most people look after this World Heritage site and respect other visitors, but unfortunately the behaviour of a relative few is turning off families and tourists. “While last Australia Day at Lake Eacham was an improvement on previous years, with positive comments to rangers, some families still had concerns about alcoholrelated behaviour. “Some irresponsible people were seen taking their drinks out on rafts and blatantly dropping

We’ll also direct unruly people to leave the park. Rangers will also

be doing additional patrols at nearby Lake Tinaroo on this busy weekend. “Police will be showing their support, patrolling and running random breath-testing of motorists. Last year we saw numerous cases of alcohol-related disorderly conduct and Police removed one man from the park. “It’s disheartening for
those who love Lake Eacham to see it treated like this. “The cost of extra patrols and rubbish collection on peak days means less money to spend on improving the park’s facilities, which isn’t fair to the yearround visitors who appreciate this gem of a place. “It’s a privilege to have this amazing park to enjoy.
We ask everyone to be respectful, bin your rubbish or take it with you, remember that not everyone enjoys your music, stay out of the restricted areas, and don’t bring your pets. Assistance dogs are permitted. “Please look after this special part of our incredible country, and encourage others to do so, Ms Bradley said.

Pathway parking nightmare By Rebecca Wallis
A MAREEBA pensioner who uses a walker to get in to town from his Walsh Street property, is calling for action over cars that park illegally over footpaths. Graham MacDonald is 70 years old and after a heart operation developed a staph infection that left him with a permanent disability. He walks into town daily for groceries and appointments but has suffered multiple falls negotiating vehicles blocking his way as he is forced on to grass and into the road. “People don’t think about it, they just park wherever is convenient for them, but for me it makes my life very difficult and it’s got to stop, he said. “I have complained to the police twice and they just took notes and that was it. But this is going on and on and no one seems to care. “If I have to go around a car with my wheelie walker and it gets stuck in the grass then I tip over. It happens all the time. Mr MacDonald’s neighbour Lloyd Harvey is a 69 year old retiree who also walks into town regularly due to a lack of transport. “My complaint is that the footpath itself is not even, it’s got dips and bumps etc. But if you’ve got a couple of bags of gro-
ceries, you don’t want to be going out onto the road and back in again, he said. “And then if you try and walk on the road it’s got such a steep slope it’s impossible. “It’s our safety and it’s a walkway, not a parking bay. Mr MacDonald and Mr Harvey live at the residential end of Walsh Street where there is a partial footpath. “I don’t think they should be allowed to park across footpaths. The street’s amply wide enough, said Mr Harvey who said his complaints have fallen on deaf ears. A spokesperson for Mareeba Shire Council said no official complaint had been made to them but that they were able to issue infringement notices to anyone seen parking illegally. “Under our Local Law, Council can issue infringement notices within our enforcement zone for vehicles found to be parked illegally, he said. “Council has not received a complaint about this particular issue however should we receive a complaint Council will act accordingly. The spokesperson also said the police have the power to issue infringement notices. “People are not sympathetic, they think it’s not our problem, said Mr MacDonald. “But it makes it hard for the elderly.

Celebrating Corrections Day THE Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui has joined with staff of Lotus Glen Correctional Centre and staff of the Mareeba Probation and Parole District Office as part of the first National Corrections Day celebrations on Friday. Ms Lui visited Lotus Glen Correctional Centre on Wednesday 17 January representing the Minister for Corrective Services,
the Honourable Mark Ryan MP for a celebratory breakfast with staff and management. She made a number of presentations to recognise the outstanding efforts of staff members who had been nominated by their peers. Last week Ms Lui met with the management and staff of the Mareeba Probation and Parole District Office to recognize their
important role. “From custodial officers to probations and parole officers, psychologists, counsellors and sentence management, re-entry, programs, education and training staff, corporate and front-line support and administration, through to investigations and surveillance – every member of the Queensland Corrections Service contributes to
the success of the Department, she said. “Corrections Day gives the Government the opportunity to recognize the important work QCS staff do every day to protect our communities. The purpose of Corrections Day is to recognise and celebrate the often unseen role that Corrective Services has in the criminal justice system.

Encouraging indigenous to make Deadly Choices By Rebecca Wallis and Carl Portella
FRIDAY saw the official launch of the Deadly Choices Healthy Lifestyle Program in Mareeba, an initiative that is aiming to encourage indigenous people into a healthier lifestyle. Hundreds were drawn to Arnold Park for the event which included activities, competitions and the opportunity to meet the Deadly Ambassadors – former Brisbane Broncos player Steve Renouf and former Gold Coast Titan Preston Campbell. “Today for us is about promoting healthy living, said Gail Wason, CEO at Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation. “That’s the whole idea of Deadly Choices is to get people pledging to actually start a healthy life and turn over new leaves. Ms Wason said the event was a great way to promote the services available through Mulungu including a child care centre, sporting offices and health services that will provide health checks.

“To me as an indigenous person it means a lot because this is one way I’m helping my mob, she said. “We see a lot of people lose their lives at an early age through not being informed about the choices that they can make. So what we are saying is make some healthy, deadly, choices. “Being informed is the first part of that. And then pledging to actively change your life, to live a healthier
life for your family, for your community, is the best thing that any aboriginal person can do. Ms Wason said the changes could have a huge effect on the community as a whole. “It makes us proud when we see that we’re changing our lives for a healthier community, not just an indigenous community but a healthy community at large, she said. “Being healthy also activates and stimulates that mind. We know that we have a lot of mental health issues but if we get active, if we get involved, we take pride, we live healthy lives - that’s all we’re asking for everyone.

Steve Szekely and Eddie Toffanello from the Dimbulah lions Club who donated the funds for the sign. (INSET) Mama Cappellazzo is a Dimbulah icon as the previous owner of ‘Julios’ restaurant.
Dimbulah’s Mama Cappo remembered By Rebecca Wallis
A DIMBULAH icon, Mama Cappellazzo, will forever be remembered in the town, thanks to the efforts of the Lions Club. The Italian restaurant owner was an infamous part of the town before her passing 21 years ago. Locals and visitors alike would flock to her premises (later called Canzian’s) for home style cooking and a good time. “She was a beautiful lady and I loved her stories about the good old days.
She was an icon really and I said to myself, I won’t forget you Mama Cappo,” said Steve Szekely from the Dimbulah Lions, who was the instigator of the project that would see her memory live on. “So I thought I’d do something about it.” The Lions approached Mareeba Shire Council about erecting a sign in her honour and now the park opposite her old restaurant is called ‘Mama Cappo’s Park’. “I thought not only the politicians should be remembered, let’s remem-
ber this lady who was a character of the town and we all loved her,” said Mr Szekely. Mama Cappo is well known among long term Dimbulah locals for her warm hospitality, funny stories and unrivalled hospitality. Her son took over the running of the restaurant after her passing, but the venue now sits empty. “I think preserving memories and remembering the characters of the past are important to a community,” said Eddie Toffanello, president of the
club. “She played a very big part of Dimbulah and was very well known around the district. “To this day, people you encounter that in the past have visited Dimbulah, will always mention Mama Cappo in conversation. “They always enjoyed her chicken and spaghetti and a good laugh with Mama.” Dimbulah Lions Club would like to thank Councillor Nipper Brown and the MSC Dimbulah boys for their work in establishing Mama Cappo’s Park.
Mango comp draws to close
Sarah Westwood’s mango is currently sitting in second place in our KP Mango Competition.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
WE’VE had another mango entered into our hotly contested annual KP Mango Comp and it is currently sitting a close second to Milan Maloberti’s whoping 1.62kg entry. Sarah Westwood has picked a 1.511kg mango making it our second largest entry to date. Sarah is currently in the running to win $300 prize money. Last year’s winner, Weston Hilditch, is currently sitting in third place with his 1.330kg mango and in the running for $200 prize money. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s
Association and The Express newspaper have teamed up with Lindsay Transport and Lindsay Rural to bring the competition back. There’s still time to enter as entries close January 31. To enter you just need to bring your mango into The Express office on Byrnes Street or to Joe Moro from the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) for viewing. “The competition is a great opportunity to celebrate the mango season on the Tablelands,” said The Express managing editor Carl Portella.

Multicultural Fest’s $20,000 boost THE Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui has welcomed the announcement that the Mareeba Multicultural Festival has been allocated another $20.000 from the State Government for their signature event now in its 20th year. “Mareeba’s Multicultural Festival is one of the Tablelands’ most significant events which every-
one in the North looks forward to celebrating and I am proud that the Palaszczuk Government decided to fund the Festival on a three year cycle giving the Committee the certainty they needed to plan into the future,” she said. “Over 6,000 people have attended the one-day Festival in the past and I expect that the 20 year
celebration of our diversity will again attract these big numbers to enjoy the almost non-stop entertainment, the wonderful array of food and the arts and crafts of many nationalities. Mr Giulano Cordenos, Chairman of the Festival Committee thanked the Palaszczuk Government for the three year commit-
ment to the Festival. “Our Festival is different. It makes a significant contribution to the cultural strength of Mareeba along with the important economic benefit to the town. We know that people travel long distances to come to our Festival every year,” he said. Mareeba is home to 54 different nationalities.

The Answer: If a tenant falls more than 7 days behind in rent the property manager/ owner can issue a Notice to remedy breach (Form 11), giving you 7 days to pay the outstanding amount. If you pay the rent within the timeframe the agreement will continue. Keep in mind new rent may also be due during the breach process. Notice to leave If the breach notice expires and the rent remains unpaid, the property manager/ owner can give a tenant a Notice to leave (Form 12), giving a minimum of 7 days to move out. If the tenant wants to dispute the notice they may apply for dispute resolution assistance with the RTA. The tenant may also decide to pay all the rent due and ask the property manager/ owner in writing if they can stay. This will be up to the property manager/ owner’s discretion. If the property manager/owner agrees to let the tenant stay, this agreement should be in writing. Communication is an essential key to developing strong tenancy relations with your property manager/owner. Have a rental question? Contact us via email or phone. We will select the most common question for next month’s edition.

CDRL shake up for 2018
Sarah Dearlove and Ruska.
THE first rounds of the footy season will be released in the next few weeks after a few changes were made to the format this year to shake things up. At the CDRL general meeting on January 17 the committee decided to play 10 rounds in normal format for the first half of the season and six rounds played in a pool format for the second half of the season. Under 17 players, Under 18 players, Under 19 players and Under 20 players can now all play in the one team after heavy discussion over
Katie Kasuurinen.
Mareeba basketball set to re-start soon THE 2018 Mareeba Basketball year commences shortly and should provide excellent basketball in both senior and junior divisions. Certainly an important change being the installing of new look basketball backboards. These new backboards, together with the basketball rings can be lowered. This is a great advantage for the young boys and girls, who should enjoy their basketball and in particular it will be a benefit to the primary school chil-
dren who are about to join basketball for the very first time. No doubt over many years, a large number of people have contributed greatly to basketball in Mareeba but a special mention of the late Bill Hornung. He built the backboards which were recently removed from the sports hall to make way for the new look boards. However, these backboards were in the sports hall for a considerable number of years. He
also supplied backboards for other basketball courts when they were operating for competitions over the years, Another contribution from the Hornung family was on the basketball court. All four daughters and the two sons of the late Bill and Pearl Hornung played basketball, starting back in the 1960’s. Some of whom displayed outstanding basketball skills. Mareeba Basketball is hosting a sign on family
the “flailing” U19 comp which usually plays 22 games. The competition will only be having 18 games - 16 plays and two byes. Games will not kick off until after Easter freeing up clubs to play trial games. It was also decided at the meeting to introduce a whole of CDRL 9’s game day in the trial period where all CDRL clubs will take place. This game day will be in honour of David Oui from Mossman Sharks who tragically lost his life late last year. Round 1 of the main rugby league competition
will start on the weekend of April 7 and 8, starting later than usual due to Easter. There will be one compulsory bye weekend for the Foley Shield. The committee also announed that the CDRL will be hosting a 2018 NRL Trial game between NQ Cowboys and West Tigers on Saturday, February 17. Tickets are available for purchase through Ticketlink. The first game is at 5:30 pm between Cairns Connection and Northern Pride and the main game at 7:30 pm. Gates will open at 5:00 pm.
