Sibling Royalty It was a case of best boot forward at the Junior Cowpokes Competition, on Saturday. Kerribee Park Rodeo Grounds was a sea of akubras and check shirts with youngsters strutting their stuff and showing their know all. Brother and sister, Ben and Ashley Dayes pictured, scooped the awards at the Cowpoke Competition, picking up Senior Cowboy and Senior Cowgirl. The annual Cowpokes competition is one of the many highlights in the lead up to the big Mareeba Rodeo that runs from July 11 to 13. Full story on page 10
Vicious dog attack By Katherine Kokkonen
A peaceful day turned into a nightmare for a Mareeba woman when she came under attack from two dogs. The Mareeba woman, who does not want to be named, was in her brother’s yard when dogs from a neighbouring property attacked her around 2.30pm, on Sunday, June 22. She received injuries to her right forearm, left ankle and right side of her body, from her hip to lower leg. The woman noticed a dog had entered the back yard and was stalking her niece, who was playing in
a cubby house. “Its head was in the window of her cubby and she fell back and screamed and startled it and it ran off,” the woman said. “I think that’s why it came back more vicious— because we had disturbed it getting its prey.” Two dogs returned to the house where they attacked the woman in the front yard, when she went looking for her brother. “The bigger dog looked at me and just bolted for me and it latched onto my leg and I tried to punch it off and run around the side of the car,” she said. The second dog then started to attack the woman who tried to get away from them by getting into a
car parked in the driveway. Unfortunately for her she was unable to get into a car, so she attempted to climb into a ute to escape but hit her head. The woman then managed to run to the house and escape the attacks. “I’m surprised that they were still coming after us because they stalked the house until the cops got there,” she said. “They just tried to get in through the doors, through the windows.” When the police attended the scene, the dogs approached in a threatening manner and police used capsicum spray on both dogs. Local art work on show By Katherine Kokkonen
Artists have been busy creating beautiful paintings, sculptures and much more for the Mareeba Art Society’s 52nd Annual Exhibition. The exhibition opens next Monday and will feature more than 100 individual artworks across a range of categories, including mixed media and pastels. The exhibition will give local artists a chance to show and sell their work with budding painters and photographers also able to gain recognition in the Junior section. Mareeba Art Society President Mary Lewendon encouraged more people to have a go and make the most of the opportunities the Art Society has on offer. “We need to keep the arts alive in society,” she said. “It’s a thriving group of not just old retirees. Art gives you freedom of expression and you don’t have to conform. There are so many outlets for artists and so many mediums which you can take up.” The Art Society is looking to run more classes and hoped people would ring up to register their interest. The exhibition runs from Monday, July 7 to Friday, July 11. Entrance to the grand opening, on Monday night, is $5 with entrance for the rest of the week only $1 and children are free. For more information on the exhibition or the Art Society, call 4092 7539.

Local artist Paulette Girle has just completed a painting depicting four towns on the Tablelands. Born and raised at Irvinebank she now calls Atherton home. A self taught artist she has taken five months to complete the painting which takes in the towns of Atherton, Walkamin, Tolga and Mareeba. The painting encompasses historical sites, landmarks and local businesses in free hand painting onto fabric. “It’s a local’s perspective of the different towns,” she said. “I’ve been painting since I was a kid and I just love the relaxation that painting brings to me. “Five months is a long time for one painting but I wanted to fit in as much as I could.” The painting will now be donated to the Atherton maize festival for auction at this year’s Maize festival ball, in August. Proceeds raised from the sale of the painting will be donated to a charity of the committee’s choosing. Paulette has other projects in line looking at other towns across the region. Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank Assistant Secretary Diana Pregl, Chef and Judge Ivan Sayed and Mareeba RSL Functions Coordinator Tracey O’Shea are looking forward to the Community Cooking Challenge heating up the kitchen.
Community Cooking challenge for charity Home cooks are being urged to break out the frying pans and blenders for the Community Cooking Challenge. Entries are now open in the mains and desert categories and cooks can enter everything from their nonna’s favourite pasta recipe to an Asian fusion inspired kumquat cheesecake. Cooks with a winning recipe can go in the running by picking up a form at the Mareeba Bendigo Bank branch or Mareeba RSL and entering by July 15. The most scrumptious main will be chosen by the public, with chefs deciding on the delicious desert. While the competition is inspired by the Master Chef show, it won’t be about truffle oil and roast pigeon, with entrants encouraged to use local produce and spend no more than $10 on the ingredients. The ten finalists’ meals will be presented at the Community Barbeque, held at the Mareeba RSL, on July 26, with the winning dish to be showcased on the RSL menu and at Canzian’s Restaurant in Dimbulah.
The Community Cooking Challenge will raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation with Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank assistant secretary Diana Pregl aiming to raise at least $2,000 for the charity. “We’re hoping for good community involvement and a big party day,” she said. The Community Barbeque will have more than just food, with face painting and a jumping castle for kids. By making a donation to the charity, market stallholders can also set-up at the Community Barbeque. For more information, email dianapregl@mdfs1.com. au or tracey@mareebarslclub.com.au.

Gearing up for Bash By Katherine Kokkonen
The engines are humming to life in the lead-up to the 2014 XXXX Gold Cane Toads to Cockroaches 25th Anniversary Variety Bash that kicks off on Friday, August 8. Mareeba Variety Bashers Graham Bochow and Peter Apel are keen to hit the road next month for the 10 day road trip, which will cover more than 3,000km around rural and regional Queensland and New South Wales. They will be joined at the starting line at Suncorp Stadium by more than 400 people and 150 cars with
around 600 cars from around the country expected to cross the finish line in Sydney. Although this will be his fifth bash, Peter Apel is looking forward to cruising through rural country in a 1963 Chrysler Valiant. Along with Tito Srhoj and Rob Brown, the adventurous trio make up The Flying Purple People Eaters. Mr Apel said as soon as he had completed his first bash, he was hooked on the adventure and being able to help. “It’s a fantastic holiday and a total break away from everything we do and it’s a great chance to see some

Last year’s winner keen for this year’s Ag Show By Katherine Kokkonen Seeing the world through a camera lens has given Francesca Stabile a new perspective and won her awards along the way. The keen photographer will be entering her snaps again in the Photography section of the Bendigo Bank Mareeba Agricultural Show, after winning four firsts, two seconds and six thirds in last year’s competition Ms Stabile started “mucking around” with photography in 2009 when her dad bought a Canon for a family holiday. She then started entering competitions in 2010, but she described her entries as “pretty ordinary”. Ms Stabile loved the creativity of pho-
tography and the variety of ideas that can be depicted. She is working on a collection of photos to enter into this year’s show and was looking to bring out the rodeo atmosphere to her work. “I love the fact that you can take a photo and capture that memory forever,” she said. “I try to get the photo as natural as possible and then I might do some aspects of Photoshop to it, but I don’t like the photo to look fake.” If you are keen to have a go and enter the Mareeba Agricultural Show, call 4092 1583. Pictured left: Francesca Stabile, with a few of her award winning snaps, will enter again in this year’s Show.

New plans to help tenants More of Queensland’s most vulnerable households could gain access to public housing, as the Government tightens up rules that allowed some tenants to pay less than 10 per cent of their income in rent. Housing Minister Tim Mander said the changes would allow the Government to direct more money to help families, as part of the Government’s strong plan to make the “Since 2005 public housing tenants have been required to pay 25 per cent of assessable household income in rent, but unfortunately the former Labor government created some bizarre rules which said certain kinds of income weren’t really income.” “Because of these exemptions, some households were left paying a far higher rate than others.” Under the old rules, payments like Family Tax Benefit Part A or child support payments were only assessed at 15 per cent, instead of the full 25 per cent. Other payments, like Family Tax Benefit Part B and the Large Family Supplement were not assessed at all. Mr Mander said the old rules were completely unfair because they meant tenants paid different rates of rent depending on where their income came from. “On one hand we had people receiving hundreds of dollars each week off the books, and on the other we had people on the Aged Pension or singles work-

Learning first aid for the mind By Katherine Kokkonen FIRST aid isn’t just for cuts and bruises, but also for mental health. Mareeba Rotary will host a 12 hour mental health first aid workshop on August 5 and 6 to give non-clinical people some guidelines on how to help those who are in distress or displaying worrying behaviour. Dr Marg Purcell from the Mareeba Hospital said the workshop is an internationally recognised course that is evidence
based. The same workshop was delivered in Mareeba four years ago and Dr Purcell felt it was time to run it again. “The people who did it really enjoyed it,” she said. “We promote first aid courses for if you break your arm or hit your head, but if you’re having a mental health issue, then this is more directed at that – and it still saves lives. “We are all likely to come across people with mental health problems and if you would like to feel more confident to sup-
port them, then come and do the course.” Dr Purcell hoped participants who complete the course would have more confidence in helping others in emergencies. The workshop costs $30 per person with spaces limited to 12 people and bookings essential. To make a booking, call Mary Stefanutti on 4092 9311. Dr Marg Purcell hopes mental health first aid course participants feel more confident in emergency situations.

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON…
Dear Readers and Friends, The countdown is on…only 11 months left of our European adventure. We all know that time flies, but to us it is just rocketing past our eyes. It has just been an amazing journey and the bucket list just keeps growing. We keep discovering new and exciting things in and around our neighbourhood and I just love and am passionate about sharing them with our travelexperience.com clients. I am very excited and proud of the Bavarian Christmas Magic tour I have put together and will be personally escorting in December. I have designed it to be very relaxed but at the same time will showcase many different parts of this amazing country. The magic of Christmas really needs to be experienced hands on and is very difficult to explain. The traditions are hundreds of years old and the local folk are very proud to keep them going from year to year. Christmas in Bavaria is not about the 25th of December, but about the spirit of the event that starts at the beginning of the month and goes right through to mid-January. We still have a few spots available for anybody looking for something very special. We are sure you will not be disappointed... contact the team in Atherton or Mareeba.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Bright future Far from criticising us, Tim Mulherin (Letters, 4 June) should be applauding the Government for standing up to our federal counterparts. I’d ask readers to reflect on the record of the LNP, and the previous Labor Government in standing up to Canberra. The former Bligh-Beattie Governments kowtowed to their federal Labor mates at every turn. Think the carbon tax, the live meat export ban to Indonesia, the mining tax, the tragic pink batts scheme, which resulted in the deaths of three Queenslanders, and the previous Labor Government’s cuts to health and education funding. I could go on.
The Express reserves the right to edit letters
I understand better than anyone the situation Joe Hockey faces in Canberra. We were both elected to fix fiscal time bombs left behind by spendthrift Labor Governments. But the Queensland Government makes no apologies for speaking out about cuts in funding for national partnership agreements. Mr Mulherin’s letter also contains a number of inaccuracies around reductions in funding to frontline services at a state level. For the record, since our election health funding has increased by almost 20 per cent. In 2013-14 the education budget went up by 6.6 per cent and in 2014-15 the education budget went up by 7 per cent. We are delivering 1100 more police officers and we have increased funding to community services, including $406 million in the
2014-15 State Budget for child protection. The Labor Party has publicly raised the possibility of increasing taxes, but this Government has made a decision not to increase or introduce any new taxes in the 2014-15 Budget, recognising the impact this would have on cost of living. Similarly, cuts to services would reverse the improvements this LNP Government has made in many areas. That is why the Government is proposing a series of asset transactions. This is the strongest and smartest choice to secure Queensland’s future finances, without placing an undue burden on Queenslanders. The Government has a strong plan for a brighter future. The time has come for Mr Mulherin and the Opposition to outline their

Facts on fracking Listening to and reading the nonsense that is promulgated about fracking, the public could be forgiven for thinking that fracking is some new evil technique invented by ‘Big Oil’ and ‘Big Gas’ so that they can make huge profits and destroy the world in the process. In fact nothing could be further from the truth. Fracking, which is derived from ‘fracturing’, has been in use by the petroleum industry for around 70 years. Oil and gas are held in layers of rock at depth. Some of these layers are permeable and release their hydrocarbons as soon as a hole is drilled into them. Some are not, and the rock has to be fractured to release the oil and gas. Huge amounts of low-polluting energy are stored in sedimentary basins around the world. The fracking industry has provided a major boost to the American economy. Australia could do the same if sanity was allowed to prevail. Fracking involves drilling a hole down to the productive strata, and then along it, and then pumping down fluids under pressure to fracture the rock. Done properly, it poses no more threat to the water supply than any other process that makes a hole in the ground. However, like all processes, the engineering must be done properly. Sadly, whether it is a collapsed bridge, a chemical factory such as Bhopal, where many thousands died, a faulty dam, or a nuclear power station, human greed or incompetence can trigger a failure. It makes no sense to deny ourselves the advantages that releasing our huge low-polluting energy reserves offer. But we must demand of government that it does its job properly and makes sure that the wells are put down to the highest standards. Which motion is fastest: tectonic plate shift, growing finger nails or State Main Roads contractors? After seven excruciatingly long months the Tablelands road works, commenced at the start of the wet season, are finally about to end. How come it has taken so long? One doesn’t have to be a civil engineer to wonder why jobs like the short sections around Atherton High School (still unfinished at Grove and Parkview Street junctions) and in Yungaburra took months, rather than weeks to finish. Maybe it was all the rains’ fault or the Department of the Environment for delaying works by two months in October. Could contractors instead concentrate on one or two road sections at a time and complete them then start on others, rather than closing off 20 or so at once then periodically abandoning most for weeks before returning to work on them. Ooh, and it would be great if traffic lights along adjoining sections were synchronised so that if one drives at the speed limits only one period of waiting is suffered – not difficult nor expensive technology to implement. If the State Government is serious about Queensland’s budget deficit, maybe it should investigate its road work contractors’ bills and the times they claim they need to perform road repairs. Spare a thought for poor TRC’s road repair crews who may have to clean up and finish the mess left by road works contractors e.g. on Tumoulin Road, paint on all the missing white lines and remove the bollards. In ambos, we trust By Katherine Kokkonen
In an emergency when seconds count, people can rest assured their lives are in the hands of someone they trust. Paramedics have won the annual Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Profession poll for the 11th year in a row. Queensland Ambulance Service Commissioner Russell Bowles said the 2,900 paramedics who serve the community from Coolangatta to the Cape would be honoured to be held in such high regard. “On behalf of the service, I thank the community for their ongoing support and our hardworking paramedics for their steadfast commitment,” Mr Bowles said. Paramedic Officer-in-charge Brendon Goldsworthy has been in the job for 12 years and has been based in Dimbulah for the past five years. “I think it’s the bee’s knees as far as jobs go,” he said. His favourite part of being a paramedic is being able to help people and make a difference. His work requires him to arrive at a job that might be a chaotic situation, settle everything down, work out what is wrong and help people. “I see the outcome at the other end when you get to the hospital and they’ve improved along the way,” Mr Goldsworthy said.
“The icing on the cake is seeing the person a couple of weeks later in different circumstances and they are all better,” Previously based in Cairns, Mr Goldsworthy found being a paramedic in Dimbulah offered its own challenges and rewards. In Dimbulah, being a paramedic means working alone with back-up provided from Mareeba. Mr Goldsworthy said their training helps them to prepare for situations that range from trauma and car crashes to farm accidents. Being a paramedic in a small community also means that there is a chance Mr Goldsworthy will know the people involved when he arrives at an emergency. “In the first instance you’re it. We try to do our best with what you’re given, being by yourself,” he said. “The worst part of it is going to something where you either know the person who is involved or the family—especially if it is not a good outcome.” Before becoming a paramedic, Mr Goldsworthy was a motor mechanic and moved out of the garage for a change of scenery and pace. “You’re still fixing things,” he joked. “It is a change but it was what I wanted to do—I wanted to help people.”
Dimbulah Officer-in-charge Brendon Goldsworthy thinks being a paramedic is the best job in the world.

A simple conversation between Tablelands residents on the need for a reliable, door-to-door mode of transport between the mountains and the coast resulted in the development of Tablelands Tours and Transfers. If you are sick and tired of having to rely on others to get you to the airport for that early morning or late night flight, or maybe that doctors appointment you’ve been putting off in Cairns is bothering you, or the stresses of simply driving down the range on a regular basis – not to mention the cost of long term Airport parking. Tablelands Tours and Transfers can take all the stress of these worries away. Tablelands Tours and Transfers provide you with a safe reliable, comfortable, personal and family friendly transport shuttle service from the convenience of your home to your chosen drop off point. “Whatever the reason, we’ll take the stress out of relying upon other forms of transport and other people so you’ll arrive on time and stress free at your destination.” The fun, educational and personalised family friendly tours are growing in popularity with new and varied experiences coming online all the time with something for everyone. Visit the spectacular World Herit-
age tropical rainforests of the far north to the edge of the outback and savannah country. Take in the rolling green tableland mountain pasture, the deep red ancient volcanic soils of produce and sugar cane farms, to the contrasts of the rocky boulders and escarpments of Granite Mountains. Be captivated by the sights and sounds of Mareeba Wetlands, or enjoy the tastes and smells of local fresh produce and various blends of coffee from the district’s many restaurants and coffee plantations. Become engrossed in the heritage, culture and splendour of outback historical towns and the Chillagoe Caves and Smelters. See amazing wildlife unique to this part of the world. Swim under cascading waterfalls, travel through the temperate climate of the Atherton Tablelands rainforests, and visit local must see attractions such as beautiful Lake Barrine, Millaa Millaa Falls, Curtain Fig Tree, Babinda Boulders and the popular Paronella Park. Tablelands Tours and Transfers endeavour to offer personalised friendly door-to-door service for customers who need to be somewhere on time or want to experience a leisurely tour of their chosen destination.

Troops come to town for training over a long distance because they have to really think through how we are going to get up there, how we are going to look after ourselves once we’re there and how we going to get these people back.” Exercise HAMEL will engage 4,000 troops with the majority of the exercise taking part just north of Townsville with events also in Tully, Innisfail, Atherton and Mareeba. Colonel Stanhope said people in Mareeba would not actually see much of the operations as the Army would be practicing Evacuee Operations. The Army would like to thank local communities for their cooperation and patience during this important training exercise.
By Katherine Kokkonen
Residents might see similar scenes to these from an exercise held in Ingham, last year. Inset: Colonel Richard Stanhope hopes Exercise HAMEL will challenge troops and extend their skills.
THE Army is rolling into the region, but there is no cause for alarm. The extra presence is part of the Australian Army’s annual foundation war-fighting exercise, Exercise HAMEL 2014. Exercise HAMEL will be conducted in Defence training areas and in Atherton and Mareeba, from July 7 to August 1. Colonel Richard Stanhope said this was to challenge not only the Brigade itself, but also intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance elements. “We want to make it a complex problem for the good guys to solve,” he said. “There is nothing like extending them out
Funding for more help in schools Next year’s Prep students will benefit from more teacher aide support, creating a stronger foundation and better learning experience, as part of the Queensland Government’s strong plan for education. Premier Campbell Newman and Minister for Education, Training and Employment Minister JohnPaul Langbroek announced the third round of funding to deliver an extra 2,250 Prep teacher aide hours per week in 2015. “This Government has a strong plan to revitalise frontline services and we’re delivering on our election promise to invest $54 million over four-years for more Prep teacher aides,” Mr Newman said. “A brighter future for our youngest Queenslanders is ours for the taking and this investment will set the foundation for life-long learning and success. “Thousands of Preppies in state schools across Queensland are al-
ready benefitting from the additional support available each day, and we’re ensuring this benefit continues throughout 2015.” Minister for Training, Employment John-Paul Langbroek said 471 Prep classrooms in 127 schools across the state would directly reap the rewards of extra teacher aide time in 2015. “This year we have again targeted schools with the greatest need, including many schools in regional and remote areas,” Mr Langbroek said. “The Queensland Government knows how important it is to invest in the early years of school to set the foundation for life-long learning and success. “Teacher aides play a critical role in Prep classrooms and by funding more teacher aide hours we’re ensuring children have extra support to develop learning and social skills from an early age.
“When it came to student outcomes, Labor’s only response to poor results in some schools was to make excuses. “We know however, that a solid foundation in the early years helps ensure improved outcomes and smooth transitions from study to training and work, all the way from crayon to career.” Kuluin State School Principal Dale Wolfenden said extra teacher aide time in Prep classrooms had delivered great results for the school’s Preppies in 2014. “We have five Prep classes at Kuluin State School and our teacher aides play an important role in supporting our classroom teachers and providing one-on-one learning support,” Mr Wolfenden said. “Next year we will receive almost 30 additional hours of Prep teacher aide time and I know our youngest students will greatly benefit from the extra support.”

Cowpokes competition fun COWBOYS and cowgirls in the making strutted their stuff for the Junior Cowpokes competition at Kerribee Park, on Saturday. Indiana Piggott and Zoran Prizmic took out the junior competition, while siblings Ashley and Ben Dayes won the senior sections. Mother Beverley Dayes was chuffed with her children’s achievement and was surprised that Ashley, 12, and Ben, 10, won in the same category. She said Ben didn’t want to enter the competition when they arrived, but decided to have a go to encourage his other sister to enter the junior section. “Poor Ashley had make-up on to cover the zinc and sunburn she got from sports day,” Mrs Dayes said. Mareeba Rodeo Secretary Angela Sturgess said a good afternoon was had by all, especially the kids who were entertained by comedian and magician Flip Riley. Ms Sturgess was looking forward to the next big events, especially the Rodeo Ball on July 4 and horse sports on July 6 with before the big weekend kicks off.

THE MYSTERY GAOL DOOR
A Mutchilba farmer was ploughing his paddock one day when he unearthed a great hulking steel door from a gaol, and it weighed a ton! Why and how the door arrived at this farm is anyone’s guess. We think that the nearest gaol would have been at Thornborough on the Hodgekinson Goldfield. The door was delivered to the museum about 15 years ago and we have no record of the donor’s name, nor have we been able to discover anything of its history. Mareeba Rotary directors: President Natasha Srhoj, Immediate Past President Joe Moro, Administrator Maree Lopez, Secretary Sherri Soncin, Youth director Charlie Martens, Club services director David Quintieri and Foundation director Marg Purcell. Absent: Treasurer Carna Madrid and directors Stephen Gear, Tina Caamano and president elect Nina Grant.
Now if you have a gaol door you surely need a gaol, so we built one next door to The Carriers Arms pub, as you naturally would. Provide an ant-bed floor, nice old bucket in one corner with a bit of newspaper and a hessian bag for sleeping on and it turns into a nice comfy ensuite. We call it “Lotus Glen Solitary”. The decorative ball and chain hanging from the bars present us with another mystery. They came from the old Rodeo Museum, but once again we have no record of the donor’s name or how they came to be in their possession!! Therefore the whole thing turns into a “Cold Case”. Can you help us solve it?

REACHING out to the community and engaging with youth are on the to-do list for Mareeba Rotary’s year. Members and guests attended the annual Mareeba Rotary change over at Canzian’s Restaurant, in Dimbulah on Saturday. Outgoing president Joe Moro welcomed Natasha Srhoj as the new president and commended her work ethic. Ms Srhoj also received the Rotarian of the Year award for her dedication and commitment to the club and community. “Natasha is always willing to participate in anything Rotary does, her work ethic and drive rubs off on other members of the club and that’s a good formula to keep the club going forward and attract new members,” Mr Moro said. “I would also like to make special mention of Maree Lopez and the effort she has put in helping me with the running of the club in the background.” Ms Srhoj was looking forward to building on Rotary’s already strong community network and branching out further with activities designed to engage youth. “We would really like to have more people come on board and will look to see if there is interest in setting up a satellite club in Dimbulah,” she said. “We also want to get out and into more schools through our youth arm, Interact and EarlyAct, which encourages kids to be more active in the community, while also having guidance from senior Rotarians.” Ms Srhoj said the club will hit the new Rotary year running and she will have the help of an exceptional team in Secretary Sherri Soncin, administrator Maree Lopez and new Treasurer Carna Madrid along with her team of dedicated directors. The Atherton Rotary club also had their changeover on Saturday night with outgoing president Colin Messervy welcoming Pauline Stackman as new president, Bronwyn Snowdon Secretary and Andrew McCosh as Treasurer for the 2014-2015 year.

Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan warns of health risks facing the modern man, and calls on Queensland gents to make a healthy pledge.
Queensland fellas not stacking up to females
Heavier, unhealthier and a shorter life expectancy - on almost all risk factors (weight, daily smoking and risky drinking) Queensland men are faring worse than women. Queensland blokes, we’re calling on you - there has never been a better excuse to sign up for Relay For Life, and pledge to lead a healthier lifestyle! Queensland Health data shows nearly 65% of Queensland men are overweight or obese, compared to around 50% of women. The data also shows about 15% of Queensland men smoke daily, compared to 13% of women. That’s not all - more than 30% of Queensland males are consuming more than two alcoholic drinks a day on average, compared to 10% of women – and when it comes to life expectancy, men are likely to live until 79, while women are expected to live until 84. Men are also more likely to be hospitalised in their lifetime. Many men don’t realise the things they’re doing on a daily basis may be impacting their health and wellbeing, and how those decisions impact the way we look, feel and perform.
Having a poor diet and inactive lifestyle can lead to overweight or obesity, which increases the risk of chronic diseases - including some cancers. One in two Queensland men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime - more than 13,400 Queensland men will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone, and sadly nearly 4500 men will die from the disease. We know that one third of cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes including eating healthily and maintaining a healthy weight we need to do more to improve survival rates and support all men affected by the disease. Relay gives men the chance to make a positive difference in the fight against cancer, and pledge to lead a healthier lifestyle to reduce their personal cancer risk. The way you look and your choice to be healthy will help you live the life you deserve to live. Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on September 13-14 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register visit relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

Snake Oyl is a local four-piece rock band from the Tablelands. SnakeOyl plays a blend of cover versions and original material with a distinctive rock style. They make each song their own, rather than replicate the styles of other artists, giving them a unique and original style that distinguishes them from other bands.
SHUTTLE BUS TO THE SHOW No more parking hassles
A shuttle bus service will be operating within the Atherton township area to help ease parking congestion near the showgrounds. You can catch the Emerson’s bus at the bus stop on the corner of Main Street and Vernon Street, at the car park on Railway Lane behind the Barron Valley Hotel, or on First Avenue beside the high school. A gold coin donation would be appreciated and can be paid into the tin as you board the bus. Buses will run about every 20 minutes from 4pm on Monday 7th and from 9am on Tuesday 8th. Last buses will leave the Vernon Street gate of the Showgrounds at 10pm on Monday and 4pm Tuesday.

The LAND Lion to pay more for milk
By Katherine Kokkonen
THE challenges faced by far north Queensland Dairy farmers have been recognised with a price increase from a processing company. Lion announced that starting from July 1 it had agreed to pay a record increase to its Far North QLD milk price, together with further increases in South East Queensland and New South Wales. Collectively, Lion’s price increases will deliver over $10million in additional payments back to the farmgate compared to a year ago, and the removal of tier two pricing from all new Lion contracts on offer will ensure that farmers benefit from the increase in price on every litre they produce. In Far North Queensland, Lion’s weighted price will increase to 59.3cpl, the highest price seen by suppliers in the region in recent years. This change, applicable to all Dairy Farmers Milk Cooperative (DFMC) farmers supplying milk for Lion in Far North Queensland, equates to an increase of approximately five cents per litre on Lion’s last season price.
DFMC Chairman Duncan McInnes said the increase will help the 51 DFMC farmers in the Tablelands with the long-term sustainability of the industry. “They were quite positive and they were pleased it was there,” he said. “This is the biggest price increase any dairy farm has received in the last five years, to my knowledge. It is a good, reasonable increase, and better than any farmer has seen in Queensland and New South Wales.” Lion Agricultural Procurement Director Murray Jeffrey said Lion’s announcement recognises the challenges faced by farmers in recent years and delivers a strong vote of confidence in the Northern dairy industry, consistent with the unique conditions and dynamics of each market. “We know that many of our suppliers have been doing it tough in recent years and believe this increase will provide greater certainty and confidence for the future,” he said. “We have great faith in the Northern dairy industry and want to continue to work closely with our partners to ensure farmers have a sustainable future, built on growth and growing value back into the industry.” THE Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) welcomed the news processing company Lion would make small but welcome price increases at the farmgate. QDO President Brian Tessmann said the announcement underscored the difficult situation facing the Queensland dairy industry, which had lost enormous capacity since the supermarket milk price war began. “It is clear that the rest of the value chain is finally starting to catch-up and notice the value of fresh Queensland milk for Queensland consumers. This follows a small price rise that had also been announced by Norco earlier this month,” Mr Tessmann said. “It lays down the challenge for other processors to do the same.” Mr Tessmann said that while the relatively small rise helped build some confidence in the industry, prices were still playing catch-up to increasing farm input costs. He said it was now clearer than ever that ruthless supermarket milk discounting to $1 per litre had to end. “Parts of the value chain are paying greater attention to the crisis of confidence at the farm level— we now need the retail end of the value chain to do the same.”

Bitter split By Katherine Kokkonen
CANE growers are facing an uncertain future with the rift between milling companies and QSL deepening. MSF announced on Friday it would not be extending its existing Raw Sugar Supply Agreement (RSSA) with QSL beyond the 2016 season. This came on the heels of Wilmar exiting the single desk marketing arrangements with the industry-owned body QSL. MSF owns and runs four mills, including Tableland Mill, and is contractually committed to QSL for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons. MSF Sugar's Chief Executive, Mike Barry, said QSL’s recent loss of more than 50 per cent of its volume due to Wilmar withdrawing from QSL meant that MSF Sugar had to review its relationship with QSL. Mr Barry said MSF Sugar would consult with its growers on sugar marketing and pricing arrangements for 2017 onwards. The withdrawal of Singapore-based
Wilmar and MSF, a wholly owned subsidiary of Thailand based Mitr Phol Group, has raised concerns about foreign owned companies jeopardising the future of Australia’s sugar industry. Tablelands Canegrowers Manager Bronwyn Dwyer said the moves by MSF and Wilmar could cause the collapse of QSL and see the sugar industry go down the same path as the dairy industry. She said the 80-odd Tableland cane growers who opted to go with the Mossman Mill owned by Mackay Sugar had been vindicated in their choice. “It’s become abundantly clear that these foreign owned companies are in it for their own self-interest and they have absolutely no regard for the wishes of the growers,” Ms Dwyer said. “Canegrowers as a whole is all for growers having a choice—if a grower chooses to market through the milling company that is ok, but if a grower is forced to market through a milling company that just goes against the grower’s interest.”

Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row must contain one of each digit. So must every column, as must every 3x3 square.
Ingredients 2 brown onions, sliced 2 cloves garlic, smashed few sprigs thyme 300 g mushrooms
April 21 to May 21
Saute onions, garlic and thyme in a little olive oil over a medium heat for a few minutes until browned. Add the mushrooms and continue to cook for another 5 minutes until lovely dark and caramelised. Remove the cooked mushrooms and onion from the pan into a bowl then return the pan back to the stove. Add the beef and saute quickly for a minute until browned. Deglaze the pan with the stock then add the quince paste. Return the mushroom and onion back to the pan and heat through. Thicken if necessary with arrowroot…but this is optional. Add the spinach just before serving and serve. Garnish with chopped parsley or gremolata. Serve immediately and enjoy.

The Mareeba Bulls have blown away the FNQ FC Heat and opened up an eight point gap at the top of the FNQ Premier league. The Bulls put on a dominant display to outclass the Heat 3-0, at Barlow Park, on Saturday. Goals from striker Anthony Mete, midfielder Wayne Srhoj and a late third by substitute Steve Cater was enough to give the Bulls the points over the Heat. The Bulls produced one of their most consistent displays of the season and never looked worried by the Heat. The away side got the perfect start when Mete was brought down in the penalty area only five minutes in. The experienced striker picked himself up and coolly converted from the spot. The Bulls continued to maintain possession with the Heat reduced to breaks down the flanks and long balls into the box. The Bulls then got their second goal with Srhoj tapping in at the back post after some good lead-up from Larry Maggio and Kane Aldterton. The Bulls finished the first half

in top gear and could have enjoyed a healthier score line at the break; with Alex Plowman missing a golden chance from only yards out, and Mete hitting the post as the whistle blew for half time. The second half saw the Heat come out aggressive and looking to press the Bulls back, but after the away side weathered the opening 15 minute onslaught the experienced Bulls outfit took control of the match and sent wave after wave towards the Heat defense. Only some lucky bounces and good keeping kept the score line respectable, until Cater rounded off the evening for the Bulls finishing off some great work by Srhoj down the left flank. “This was probably our most consistent match so far this year, across the entire park, everyone really stepped up and played our football” Coach Alex Srhoj said. “I am happy for the players, they have put the hard work in, they have done the hard yards and tonight was a reward to their efforts.”

Ivanhoes walk over Gladiators
Simple mistakes and an inability to maintain possession saw the Gladiators go down to the Ivanhoes in a disappointing home game.
AWAY GAME! MAREEBA BULLS V DOUGLAS DRAGONS Ed Tokahari crosses for the Gladiators only try in a lacklustre game against Ivanhoes.
Ivanhoes came away with the 16-6 win in a game that never saw the Gladiators hit their stride. Gladiator Captain Shana Aue said the side was let down by their inability to complete their sets and hold on to the ball. “To be honest, it was a shocker and I don’t think the boys played at their best,” he said. “We would get two runs and then lose the ball. We had a lot of opportunities to score but I think the boys got too hyped and didn’t complete.” The Gladiators managed to regain some dignity when Ed Tokahari crossed in the second half with less than 12 min-
utes to go. Dwayne Williams had a successful conversion to take the score to 16-6 in favour of Ivanhoe, but it was a case of too little, too late. “We ran out of time, if there was another 20 minutes we could have fought back,” Aue said. The Gladiators will have plenty to think about ahead of their clash against Edmonton Storm, this weekend. “I think the boys will come out a lot stronger because we lost this week,” Aue said. “We just had no structured plays and no guidance. It wasn’t the best game we could have played on our home ground.”
