Tableland P crime rate on the slide

By Ryan Groube olice say a combination of factors have contributed to a significant reduction in crime in Mareeba and Atherton during the past 12 months.

On June 27, Police Minister Jack Dempsey and Police Commissioner Ian Stewart launched an Online Crime Statistics Portal.

The portal allows Queenslanders to access crime statistics for their street, suburb and town.

From June 22, 2012 to June 22, 2013 there were 1928 reported crimes in Mareeba and Atherton compared with 2195 for the preceding 12 months – a reduction of more than 12 per cent.

The number of reported assaults dropped

13 per cent, with 81 recorded offences in 2011-12 compared with 157 in 2012-13.

Drug offences have risen slightly while the only substantial increase in crime has been for good order offences including resisting arrest and indecent behaviour.

The majority of offences in Mareeba and Atherton occur between 8-9pm on Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday morning.

For both towns, offences are most prevalent in the central business districts.

Mareeba Police District inspector Rolf Straatemeier said the statistics had to be taken with a grain of salt because a spike in recorded crime could come as a result of a police blitz targeting a particular offence.

Cowpokes begin Rodeo fun

areeba Rodeo Festival kicked off with the traditional Cowpokes competition at Kerribee Park on

June 29.

Brothers Jacob and Nathaniel Kapetyn were named Senior and Junior Cowboy while Rowena Petersen and Madisyn Martin were crowned Senior and Junior Cowgirl.

The Cowpokes winners will appear in the Mareeba Mazda Downtown Parade on June 12 and the Grand Parade at the Rodeo on June 13, in addition to attending the official rodeo committee dinner on June 9.

The Cowpokes competition, attended by about 200 people, also featured raffles, a cent sale, clown entertainment, whip-cracking and a performance by Cairns-based gymnast Shaolyn Drake.

The competitions’ matrons, Frances Petersen and Theresa Whiteing, told The Express the event was an opportunity for children have fun, learning confidence in front of a crowd and become involved

with the community.

“It’s really just a big chance for the kids to get out there, dress up, have a bit of fun and get included in our great big community event,” Ms Whiteing said.

“They have to get up on stage and it’s a new experience for them.

“They all have a lot of fun, even if they don’t end up as winners.”

The Cowpokes winners were selected from about 30 entrants by independent judges from outside the Mareeba area in order to remove any bias. Entrants were selected based on their answers to a series of questions which gauged their confidence, poise, enthusiasm and maturity.

Rowena Petersen, 12, a Year 8 student at Mareeba State High School, said she “felt great” at receiving the Senior Cowgirl title but had not expected to win.

“I had no idea this was going to happen,” she said. “I just entered for a bit of fun, I didn’t think I was going to win.”

Junior Cowgirl winner Madisyn Martin, 5, was excited with her prize bag and said she had enjoyed the competition.

“It was fun being up on stage – I liked it,” she said. “I’ve got a lot of lollies and other things in my bag and I’m excited to go on the float later.”

Madisyn’s mother Jolene Martin said she hadn’t needed to encourage her daughter to enter the competition.

“She wanted to come last year but she was too young,” Ms Martin said. “She likes being out in front of everybody and she’ll be talking about it for weeks now.”

The Kapteyn brothers, both students at Kuranda District State College were overjoyed at their win, with the older Jacob inspired to enter the competition after watching his younger sibling try last year.

“I’m really excited and amazed,” said Jacob, 11.

“I’ve never won anything before – my little brother went in last year and didn’t win, but it looked like fun so I decided to give it a go this year.”

Nathaniel, 6, said he had been saddened when the title slipped through his fingers last year and felt vindicated being named Junior Cowboy this year.

“I was really sad I didn’t win last year,” he said. “This is the first trophy I’ve won and I got a lot of badges.

“It’s good that I’ve won all this at such a young age.”

The brothers, however, failed to agree on who had picked up the better title.

“I’m the king now,” Jacob explained to his brother after being named Senior Cowboy. “You’re just the prince.”

Nathaniel disagreed: “No, I’m the king – I’ve got a trophy.”

Their mother Sareeta Kapteyn said despite the bickering it was a positive experience for the boys.

“They’ve always been very competitive with each other and they’ll probably spend the whole time arguing about it at home, but it’s definitely good for them to get out there and have a go.

“I’m very proud of them both.”

Jacob, however, was determined to be recognised by his rightful title.

“I am the king,” he said.

“My brother is banished to the dungeon!”

Online stat portal shows crime is down

Continued from page 1 Inspector Straatemeier said police classify crime in three broad areas, offences against the person, offences against property and other offences which include drug, traffic and good order crimes.

“When we scrutinize crime locally, we take this these broad areas into account, because even if overall, the total number of offences rises, this could be because of excellent work by our police officers in being very proactive in the ‘other offences’ area,” he said.

“The identified increases in drug and good order offences show that our officers are being proactive.”

Inspector Straatemeier said despite the limitations of the statistics, the Mareeba Police District had made huge strides in reducing property offences and had one of the best records for solving crime in the state with a clearance rate of about 43 per cent.

“With regard to property offences, we are well down on the rate compared to other areas in the State.

In regard to our solved rates, we recently underwent a performance review and our solved rates are some of the best in the State,” he said. “Police in the Mareeba District have been able to keep the overall offence numbers within normal ranges even with the population increase on the Tableland over the past 10 years.

“I attribute what has been achieved to the hard work by many of our officers in this community and our community being prepared to work with police to find ways to reduce crime.”

Officer in charge of Mareeba Police Station Derek Garner said the impact of licensed venues in Mareeba and Atherton pubs embracing a liquor accord had had a profound impact in reducing crime.

For the past four years, licensed venues have agreed to ban patrons who over indulge in a bid to reduce violent offences.

There are 50 people on the banned list in Mareeba with 20 of those life bans. Senior Sergeant Garner said the figures were proof the liquor accord was working.

“The way pubs are dealing with people who act unacceptably as a result of drinking far too much has had a real impact on driving down the number of assault cases that are reported,” he said.

The rise in good order offences Senior Sergeant Garner attributed to Mareeba District Police increasing the number of police on the beat in Mareeba’s central business district.

Senior Sergeant Garner also said the introduction of CCTV cameras in Mareeba, the long-running police ‘Lock it or Lose it’ campaign and success in prosecuting a “small, core group” of offenders had also contributed to the reduction.

Despite the success, Mr Garner said more needed to be done and that two of the major areas of concern for Mareeba District Police, domestic violence and traffic accidents, weren’t included in the statistics.

“We are always looking at reducing crime rates and improving our clean up rates but the reality is that there will never be a perfect scoreboard,” he said.

“Our major concerns looking ahead are the continued high impact crashes on our highway system as well dealing with an increase in domestic violence breaches.”

Police Commissioner Stewart said the online crime portal would revolutionise the way the public has access to crime information.

Commissioner Stewart said one of the key aims of the portal was to encourage users to become familiar with their area and engage in appropriate crime prevention strategies and partner with police to ensure a safer community.

What’s in store for Mareeba’s council?

HE organisational structure of the post de-amalgamation Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and the new Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) is nearing completion as council staff wait with bated breath to see where their future lies.

Transfer manager Rod Ferguson, de-amalgamation project manager Brett de Chastel and TRC chief executive Ian Church held a series of face-to-face “information sessions” with staff over the past fortnight to explain the process for splitting the workforce in two.

The TRC structure is now finalised with staff being placed in positions with the existing council.

That process is expected to be completed in August with remaining staff to be placed on a list to transfer over to the new MSC. It is expected that between 245 and 300 staff will be transferred to the MSC. Staff transferring to MSC won’t be guaranteed a full-time job with the new council until early January 2014, leaving them with an anxious four month wait.

Mr Ferguson said he is about to finalise an interim MSC structure complete with three departments, corporate services, infra-

structure services and community services.

An “organisational development section”, which will include a human resources function, has been included in the structure but will operate independent of the other departments. Each department will have a director who will report to the MSC chief executive.

Staff transferring to the MSC will be placed into one of the relevant departments but not a specific job.

Mr Ferguson said the situation wasn’t ideal but that the reality is that the structure he had developed was “interim” and may not be accepted by the incoming MSC. “Staff who aren’t allocated positions within the TRC will be put on a list for the Mareeba Shire and will just have to wait and see if they have a permanent role within the new council,” he said. “I will set out all the positions that I think the new council should have but it needs to be very clear that everything that I do is interim.

“At the first meeting of the Mareeba Shire Council [in early January, 2014] I will present the list of transferring staff and my structure to the new council. Whether they decide to accept that is the big unknown.”

Mr Ferguson said that he backed the decision to let staff know who would be staying and who would be going early but conceded the strategy had inherent risks.

“There is always the risk that the organisation will lose staff who want more security in their jobs and who may choose to secure a job in the private sector or with the Cairns or Cassowary [Coast] councils. I would hope we don’t lose valuable staff as a result of this uncertainty,” he said.

“[For those on the transfer list] the concern will be where there is too many staff allocated in a particular area and I have no doubt that will induce higher than normal levels of stress.

“For those whose preference it is to work with the Mareeba Shire it will be a tough decision if they are offered a role with TRC because they will need to weigh up job security or take that risk [of not getting a job] with the Mareeba Shire.”

Any staff that aren’t required by the new MSC will be offered redundancy under the TRC’s enterprise bargaining arrangements.

Mr Ferguson also said holding the local government elections in the final quarter of 2013 presented its own challenges.

It is expected residents living within the boundaries of the new MSC will go to the polls in mid to late November.

Once the incoming council is elected, Mr Ferguson will only have about a month to brief council on the de-amalgamation before the MSC begins operating on January 1, 2014.

In addition to finalising the organisational structure, the MSC has to adopt a budget for its first six months within 30 days.

“Those first couple of weeks will just fly by,” he said. “I expect what will happen is that the budget adopted by the council in January will largely reflect the TRC’s [201314] budget for the Mareeba area for the six months to June 30, 2014.”

Mr Ferguson said an early local government election would allow him to spend more time with the council elect prior to the MSC opening its doors. He did concede the downside of the early election is that it could create “a political stoush over an imaginary border”.

Borzi Jurassic Park

A

baby crocodile tragically passed away before getting the chance to watch the Mareeba Bulls take on the Southside Fury at Borzi Park on Sunday.

Soccer fans found the 50 centimetre crocodile dead under the western grandstand at Borzi Park at about 2pm.

Mareeba United Football Club (MUFC) vice-president Stephen Srhoj said he was devastated for the young reptile who he had no doubt had a keen interest in the world game.

“He was obviously a soccer fan so I’ll be giving him a proper burial at the grounds,” Mr Srhoj said.

Mr Srhoj suspects the reptile may had come from the dam at the nearby Mareeba Turf Club, attracted by the soccer club’s sprinklers which are turned on every second night.

It is unclear when the animal arrived at the ground but Mr Srhoj said it would most likely have been on Thursday evening. MUFC said they will not be conducting an investigation into how the croc breached the club’s security.

Death at Walkamin

A

58-year-old man is dead and two others injured after an explosion occurred at about 9.30pm on Saturday night at a Kippin Drive property near Walkamin.

The man, believed to be a Cairns resident visiting the property, was pronounced dead at about 9.45pm but is understood to have been killed instantly in the blast.

Another 58-year-old man was taken to Cairns Base Hospital for surgery with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, while a 38-year-old man suffered minor wounds.

Police have confirmed the deceased man was not the owner of the property, and believe he and the other injured men were friends socialising there. No other details about the people involved were released by the time of print.

Police officers and ambulance crews from Mareeba attended the scene, in addition to ex-

plosive experts from the Department of Mines and Energy, officers from Workplace Health and Safety and forensic scientists from Cairns Police Station.

The explosive material is believed to be gunpowder, and a quantity of it was seized by police for testing.

An unconfirmed number of people were at the property of the time of the explosion and are being interviewed by police.

Speaking to the media outside the site of the incident, Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Kerry McQuilty from the Mareeba Criminal Investigation Branch said police were treating the incident as non-suspicious.

“At this point it seems to be death by misadventure,” he said.

“It’s not military ordnance or equipment that has exploded, it is ordinary gunpowder but it was not homemade.

“We have to take a number of statements

from people that are obviously traumatised that were at the address last night, we’re following up with that today – as you can imagine they were in quite some shock.”

It is unknown what caused the explosion but the post describing the incident on the Queensland Police Media website said initial information suggests it was “related to the burn off of a substance on the property.”

It is understood that the deceased man was not standing closest to the source of the explosion when it occurred.

Police blocked off access to Kippin Drive after the incident.

Residents at a neighbouring property had no comment for the media, but those at a house further away reported hearing a bang they assumed to be a branch falling onto a roof.

Investigations into the incident are continuing. As this story develops updates will be posted on The Express Facebook page.

New teaching method inspires

ORTHERN Peninsula Area State College (NPASC) has 609 students spread across campuses in Bamaga, Injinoo, New Mapoon, Umagico and Sesia, the majority of whom are Indigenous and speak English as a second or third language.

Almost all of the school’s students were performing below minimum national standards before ‘explicit teaching’ was introduced at the school in late 2010.

In 2013, several grades are expected to meet or exceed NAPLAN standards; something principal Ken McLean said is remarkable.

“As far as I know there’s no other Indigenous school that has whole year levels at national standards,” he said. “Every year our educational outcomes have improved.”

Explicit teaching was introduced to NPASC

by John Fleming, an academic consultant at the prestigious Halieybury College in Victoria.

Mr Fleming developed the method in the late 1990s while teaching at the severely disadvantaged Bellfield College in Melbourne.

He describes the teaching model as centred around the concept of “I do, you do, we do,”

– the step-by-step teaching of a particular idea to students.

“What we’ve added is the ‘we do’ step – this means we actually check the student has taken in the concept before we progress,” Mr Fleming said.

“Other teaching methods leave out that step.”

Mr McLean said the method was very effective in English teaching.

“It’s a way of breaking things down into little bits,” he said.

“With our reading and speaking classes for our early primary students we’re looking at phonics, which is recognising letters, before moving onto phonetics, which is recognising the sound of words.”

Mr Fleming said since he developed the method it had been introduced it to more than 100 schools across the country, starting with about 25 in far north Queensland, including Mareeba State School.

At NPASC, Mr McLean said the introduction of the model, combined with community support, has reversed the school’s misfortunes.

“We’ve now got parents ask-

ing for support with going through their kids’ homework with them, which is something that’s never happened before,” he said.

“We’ve got links with TAFE to make sure that our school leavers are ending up in employment or full time tertiary education – we’ve also got a support team that attacks truancy, working with truants to get them back in class. “The Council and the Mayor are behind us, the whole community’s behind us – it’s great.”

Mr Fleming said he would continue to expand the method across Australia.

“It is every child’s right to have a quality education,” he said.

Art gallery opens A

new art gallery at Tolga aims to show off the region’s best handicraft.

The Rainforest Gem Art Gallery, which opened on June 22, features jewellery, paintings, metalwork, photography, woodwork and glass sculptures, all produced locally by artists on the Tableland and Cairns.

Laurence Jones and his wife Aura established the gallery, which also serves as their workshop and home, after deciding there was a need for a local-only art venue on the Tableland.

“What we really thought was that there was nowhere around here where you could see all locally-produced pieces of art,” Mr Jones said. “I think there’s a lack of locally-made or even Australianmade handicraft in the area, especially in Cairns, where you go into a tourist shop and the items are mainly made in China.”

A former travel agent, Mr Jones quit after 28 years of running his own agency and took a gamble with Ms Jones in setting up the gallery in Tolga, where they have lived since 2009.

By Allan Sharpe The Shed continues to buzz with activity as we recently had a shipping container (pictured) put in place beside our workshop. This has been a work in progress for sometime preparing the pad and organising the container but now it is all coming together. The shipping container is going to be used to store tools and materials which will allow the workshop to be developed further.

This is an exciting development for the shed which will allow us to do a lot more projects with room to move.

The men enjoyed the FNQ Field Day last month and it provided an opportunity to talk to other men about the shed and the activities that take place. They also encouraged men to take advantage of the free health screening that were being provided by Community Health. It has been great for the Men’s Shed to develop a close working relationship with Community Health with the aim of improving Men’s Health across our community.

By the way if you still have a problem with Mina Birds at your place we are still producing Mina Bird Traps which are available to be purchased or to be rented.

A century-old tradition will continue on the Tableland over the next two weeks as preparations finalize for the Atherton and Malanda shows, with new attractions and old favourites offered at both events.

Malanda Show Society president Carl Grandelis said the event was nearing its 100th anniversary and would continue to focus on the event’s farming roots, while still offering new attractions for families.

“The show was first held in 1916, so we actually have our first centenary coming up which will be great for us to have a look back at the history of the show,” he said.

“It was established as an agricultural show and it’s remained that way – we’ve still got all the dairy and cattle exhibits for people to show off their best stock.

“All the art displayers are superb once again – we’ve got submissions from all over the region it’ll be a great display of the wonderful work everyone does.”

The Atherton Show will be held on July 9 and 10 and will feature new entertainment including death-defying motorcycle stunts, trick horse-riding, a reptile exhibit and a sand-sculpting workshop.

For the first time Atherton Show will also feature a shuttle bus that will run a circuit between the town’s central bus stops and the showgrounds to make it easier to get to and from the event.

Malanda Show will run over this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, offering stoneworking and blacksmithing displays in addition to a celebrity hand-milking session.

Atherton Show will again be serviced by the Showmen’s Guild of Australia, offering rides and fairground attractions.

Both shows will still offer community art, agricultural and music, including performances by the Hillbilly Goats.

Both shows are expected to attract a crowd of about 7000. Neither show will be running a Miss Showgirl competition this year due to a lack of applications.

at Atherton Showgrounds every year since 1904, except for time off in 1925 and during the Second World War. Atherton Show society organiser Jenny Grech said the event had evolved into a modern town fair but still retained its agricultural origins.

“I think it’s changed a lot but focus is still on agriculture – back in the day the show had boxing tents, animals in tiny cages, things you wouldn’t really see or accept now days,” she said.

“Because travel and communication weren’t as fast in the past, the show was one of the events that everyone would all come into town at the same time and see each other – you could catch up and have fun but it was also a good opportunity for graziers to show off and sell stock.

“These days it’s become a modern show but it’s still got that same ability to bring a community together for a good time.”

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the shows were vital to the fabric of the local community.

“These shows really are a once a year occasion for both these communities,” she said.

By Ryan Groube A short-term cap on electricity tariffs is set to save Tableland farmers as much as $10,000 this financial year as Ergon Energy begin a major review to limit the impact of future price increases.

Water and Energy Minister Mark McArdle travelled to Mareeba on June 26 for high-level meetings with representatives from Tableland Canegrowers, Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers and Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Area Council.

Representatives used the meetings to discuss their concerns about the long-term viability of the agricultural industry on the Tableland should electricity and water costs continue to spiral.

Mr McArdle said the State Government had provided short-term relief for farmers with their water and electricity bills.

Farmers and irrigators using the soon to be obsolete electricity tariffs 62 and 66 will have cost increases capped to 10 per cent.

Re-lift irrigators in the Mareeba-Dimbulah water supply scheme are entitled to a SunWater funded rebate on their water bill for the 2012-13 financial year.

A transition to local management of the Mareeba-Dimbulah channel irrigation scheme is also being looked at in a bid to find efficiencies in the cost of delivering water.

Mr McArdle said the State Government could not continue to provide short-term relief forever and that Ergon Energy’s electricity tariff review was essential.

“What I got from my meetings up here was that if the cost of one of both of these [electricity and water] is putting at jeopardy the viability of a lot of farmers and the community as a whole,” he said.

More cattle than usual Mareeba Combined Agents penned 616 head at last week’s prime and store cattle sale.

A larger than usual number of cattle drew one major export processor back to the market, providing a welcome return for vendors with heavy, well finished cattle.

Values were heavy, export slaughter bullocks didn’t change on the previous week, heavy cows suitable for the export slaughter market weren’t available in any

great number but medium weight good condition.

Cows suitable for local trade were plentiful and competition for these types moved in a range from the mid 70 cents per kilogram to 106 c/kg.

Good quality store condition cows created plenty of interest and most sold in a range from 65 c/kg to a top of 90 c/kg, mostly brought by Julatten and Tableland buyers.

Dwyer said the majority of farmers and irrigators on the Tableland used tariff 62 and 66, both of which are set to become obsolete in 2020.

“This cap on prices is only for this coming year,” she said. “If they [Ergon Energy] can’t work through their tariff structure issues then our growers could be faced with compounding increases in their electricity bills of 20 per cent each year.

“The hope is that after this review a better way of determining electricity prices will be found that is more cost reflective.”

Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said power bills for many farmers had doubled in the past five years.

“We have already seen significant increases in electricity prices at this point in time and every time these costs goes up that money comes off our bottom line,” he said. “To the Minister’s credit he has taken this issue on and we thank him not only for the short-term assistance but for deciding to look at the whole tariff issue from the top down.”

The cap on electricity will also extend to some business tariffs including 21, 20, 22, 37, 41 and 43.

Minister Mr McArdle said the review was the first step in tariff reform, and urged Queenslanders and interest groups to get involved.

which makes recommendations to Horticulture Australia Ltd (HAL), an industry-owned group which manages the banana industry levy.

The levy funds research and development projects as well as banana marketing.

HAL has appointed Jenny Margetts, from Plant and Food Research, as the service provider for the strategic plan project.

Local growers will also be able to participate in the development of the plan through other means, including a survey to be distributed to growers in August.

The two local representatives are yet to be finalised.

Some of the changes Ergon Energy will look at include stronger time-of-use signals, capacity and critical peak pricing, or a reduced reliance on volume charges. Tariff reform will also be a key component of the 30 Year Electricity Strategy, with the Discussion Paper that will inform the Strategy to be released in the coming months.

During Mr McArdle’s visit to the Tableland he also met with Tablelands Regional Council to hand over control of the ownership of Ibis Dam at Irvinebank. The dam has recently undergone a $10 million State Government funded upgrade to meet safety requirements.

The State Government has also provided the TRC with a $700,000 cheque to cover dam operating and maintenance expenses for the next five years. After that, the Mareeba Shire Council is expected to have to come up with $140,000 for maintenance each year.

To pay for that a benefited area rate will apply for the 62 properties connected to the water network in Irvinebank, set at $400 a year.

Mr McArdle also announced last week that he will be taking six weeks medical leave from July 25 to undergo treatment for prostate cancer.

Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps will fill Mr McArdle’s portfolio.

More than 200 people attended the alcohol and tobacco free event. The day was a huge success and the perfect weather helped the crowd enjoy a great day at the park with face painting, food, local entertainment with music and dancing, kids activities that included an animal zoo, basketball games, health information stalls, support to help quit smoking and heaps more.

‘Gators storm home to beat Brothers

The Mareeba Gladiators have pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory against the Cairns Brothers at Davies Park on Saturday, winning 32-26.

The ‘Gators were a long way behind at halftime but dominated the final 40 minutes.

Mareeba, slipping to fifth on the ladder after a string of ugly defeats, badly needed the win.

Despite Mareeba centre Rob Pedersen scoring the first try of the game with a successful conversion by Jason Lea, Brothers quickly pulled ahead.

Sophisticated reverse passes and slick attacking combined with Mareeba’s haphazard defence allowed Brothers to build a seemingly unassailable lead at the half.

Four tries and three conversions during the first half saw Brothers rack up 22 first half points to the ‘Gators paltry six.

In the halftime break, however, something changed in the Gladiators.

Almost immediately after play resumed, Paul Alofi performed a spectacular dive across the try line still tangled around a Brothers player.

A short time later, ‘Gators captaincoach Rod Jensen broke through defenders to score near the posts.

Brothers tried to rally with some gruelling midfield play, with tempers fraying at several points.

Mareeba could not be stopped, however, crossing for another two tries.

Lea’s kicking had been flawless all night but he hit his peak four minutes from the end of the game, sending a penalty kick sailing over the black spot all the way from the 50-metre line.

Davies Park announcer Mark Peters called for Lea to “take a bow” over the speakers.

Cairns had a bit of fight left in them, with their fullback managing

to score two minutes before full time.

The try went unconverted, leaving the previously dominant Brothers on 26 to Mareeba’s 32.

Jensen delivered a stirring victory speech to the team at full time.

“Boys, it’s moments like this that you need to remember when you play rugby – it’s moments like this that will stay with you,” he said.

“We got out there and played like that not because of the Brothers, but because we told each other and ourselves that we would put a team on the field – and it doesn’t matter what players are in the team, it matters that we were out there doing it.

“The finals are still within reach but we still have to beat Suburbs, we have to beat Ivanhoes, we have to beat Yarrabah, we have to beat Atherton, we have to beat Tully and we have to beat Mossman – so don’t get over excited.”

Gladiators assistant coach Todd Rowe said the team had pulled

through a difficult week after the loss of a host of regular starters.

“We didn’t even know if we were going to have a team all week,” he said.

“We said ‘If we don’t have a team we’re going to forfeit, and we’re not going to forfeit.’

“A lot of blokes from the Reserves and even the Under 18s have put their hands up and they’ve been superb.”

Brothers captain-coach Robbie Swain paid tribute to Mareeba’s huge effort in the second half.

“They came out totally different in the last 40 minutes,” he said.

“We were trying to keep up with their tempo but we just couldn’t.

“They played extremely well and they pretty much ran right over the top of us.”

Mareeba will head to Alley Park in Gordonvale this Saturday to take on Southern Suburbs.

The following week the ‘Gators have a bye for the Mareeba Rodeo.

Late Kangaroos surge denies plucky Roosters

By Ryan Groube THE Atherton Roosters came within 15 minutes of causing the biggest upset of the Cairns and District Rugby League season against the Kangaroos on Sunday night.

For 65 minutes the winless Roosters threw everything they had at the competition front runners to poke their noses in front 18-14 with time running down.

Tiring, the Roosters fell away in the final stanza to fall 32-18 as the Roos ran in three late tries.

Kangaroos captain Kieran Hayes said his team was lucky to escape with the win.

“They gave us a hell of a fight,”

he said.“I think we thought we could come here and it would have been an easy win. Once it got to the end I think we finally realised that we could be beaten and we snapped back in to the way we usually play.

“They played really well. There is no way they should be sitting at the bottom of the ladder.”

Steven Crear was a star for the Roosters.

The lanky forward tackled his guts out all night to easily be the team’s best forward.

During one set of six, he was involved in all five tackles before the kick.

The home side dominated the opening exchanges in a match played

in chilly, greasy conditions in front of a paltry home crowd at Roosters Stadium.

An early double to Waylon Joseph established an 8-4 lead to the Roosters in the first 20 minutes.

A series of silly mistakes from the Roosters, and penalties from the whistle-happy referee, saw possession swing back to the Kangaroos at the back end of the half - and they capitalised with two quick tries.

Goal kickers for both sides didn’t get much help from their team mates with the first four tries scored at the extremities of the field.

The first conversion of the game came at the fifth attempt with the Kangaroos taking a handy 14 points

to eight lead into the break.

In a season of disappointment, the Roosters found something in the second half and dominated general play for the first 20 minutes.

Their forwards punched holes through the middle of the Roos defence and the right hand pairing of Bert Whap and Joseph were menacing every time they got the ball.

Whap started the Roosters comeback latching on to a cross field bomb from captain Curtis Nehow.

The conversion struck the uprights leaving the score 14-12.

Whap was in again soon after when Kangaroos fullback James Kerwick spilled a bomb and the Roosters won the scramble for the loose ball.

At 18-14 the Roosters were agonisingly close to their first win but Nehow said fitness let them down.

“We are getting close. When we lose we are not getting beat by heaps,” he said. “It was just some silly errors at the end and our fitness I think that hurt us.”

In the other grades, the Roosters Reserves were belted 80 points to 10.

The under 18s could only field a 13-man team after being decimated by the school holidays but fought hard in their 30-26 loss.

The Roosters are away to Edmonton this week.

Nehow asked The Express to give a shout out to Tyson Birchley who celebrated his birthday on July 1.

Bulls in 6-0 home romp Southside Fury coach Gordon Cashmere said his side had been given a football lesson as a rampant Mareeba Bulls ran out 6-0 winners at Borzi Park on Sunday. Paul Ruiz and Dennis Allen both scored two goals while Josh Ruiz also slotted one.

The Fury, in only their third year in the competition, also conceded an own goal.

Cashmere said despite the loss his young side always learnt a lot when they played the Bulls.

“We got a caning,” he said. “Mareeba is a class outfit and they really did give us a football lesson.

“They scored a couple of soft goals but they scored

some brilliant ones as well and I know our side learns a lot from playing against a team with players like Victor [Madrid] and Wayne [Srhoj].”

Mareeba Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said the Bulls would take the win and focus on next week as they continue on their quest for the premiership.

“All in all it was a good Sunday afternoon but we have to keep moving forward,” he said.

In a bid to continue their unbeaten run at home this season the Bulls now turn their attention towards preparing to host the Edge Hill Tigers on Saturday night at Borzi Park.

Mareeba junior stars in Storm debut

Ben Hampton, 21, a Mareeba Gladiators junior, scored two tries for the Melbourne Storm against the Gold Coast Titans on June 24, in his NRL debut.

Although the Titans overran the Storm 18-12, Hampton scored Melbourne’s two tries for the game and acted as a key playmaker after Gareth Widdop was taken off the field with an injury.

Hampton described the feeling of his first NRL try as “unreal.”

Hampton’s skill did not go unnoticed during his youth in Mareeba, and he entered the Melbourne Storm development program.

“I played all my rep footy [in Mareeba], I started talking to Melbourne when I was about 14 and moved down when I was about 17, the day after I finished school,” he said.

Hampton has been praised by his teammates, including fellow far north Queenslander Billy Slater.

Paintball project gets council nod

In the June 20 meeting, the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) voted unanimously to approve Adam Jaggard’s application for a development permit for the establishment of a paintball facility on his AthertonHerberton Road property.

Mr Jaggard, 28, decided to pursue the venture 10 months ago due to his enthusiasm for recreational shooting.

“I really love my shooting,” he said.

“We’d just got back from overseas and I had a couple of ideas for setting up a small business, and this was by far my favourite one.

“Right now we’re working on setting up the weapon licensing, once we have that it’ll be closer to all systems go.”

The sport of paintball simulates a shoot-out by arming players with a gas-powered paintball marker, which shoot gelatine capsules filled with dye.

Players are protected by full-face masks and jumpsuits, and 3.5m-high netting is erected around the playing fields to protect people outside.

Mr Jaggard said the field, once built, would offer games for 20 players at a time and feature a mix of bush and open ground across three different playing fields, covering about 14 acres in total.

“We’re looking at having car bodies, forts, bunkers, pillboxes and concrete barriers,” he said.

“Anyone that loves getting out, having a blast and getting the adrenaline pumping is going to enjoy it,” he said.

TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long expressed enthusiasm for the project, saying it would increase the region’s profile.

“This proposal will bring something new to the area,” she said “It’s an energetic outdoor activity with appeals for both locals and visitors.”

Mr Jaggard said he hoped to have the site operational no later than Christmas, and would expect to hire extra staff locally if the business was successful.

“I’d definitely like to hire some referees from around here if it takes off,” he said.

The facility would compliment two other existing paintball facilities in the far north with one at Kuranda and another at Babinda.

Gladiators president John Arcidacono, was vice president when Hampton played for Mareeba and always knew he was a rising star.

“Ben played for us in 2007 under Chris Sheppard, the year we won the CDRL premiership,” Arcidacono said. “As a junior coming up in A-Grade he more than hold his own his own – he did excel.”

Hampton’s mother Megan said it was “exciting and terrifying” to watch her son play from the stands and that he deserved his success.
