Katter set to retain seat By Ryan Groube
Bob Katter is poised to extend his stranglehold over the seat of Kennedy deep into a second decade as voters head to the polls on Saturday. ABC election analyst Antony Green told The Express that he “can’t imagine any other outcome” then the Katter’s Australian Party leader retaining Kennedy. Bookies have installed Mr Katter as an unbackable favourite with Way2bet.com.au declaring: “This vast northern outback seat is the Katter’s Australian Party’s to keep, and he’ll [Mr Katter] romp in again!” Despite holding the seat by 18 per cent, Mr Katter said it would be arrogant to think he was a shoe-in and that any election reflected the will of the people. “I have never felt confident ever in any election I have con-

tested,” he said. The most likely challenger to Mr Katter on the eight-person ballot is the Liberal National Party’s candidate Noeline Ikin. Ms Ikin has been campaigning since April, having circumnavigated the electorate three times, and with a national swing to the LNP is confident of “taking some skin” off Katter. The LNP’s state director Brad Henderson was bullish about Ms Ikin’s chances although he did concede unseating Katter was the ultimate challenge. “Noeline understands the challenge she faces in winning the seat and has worked extremely hard to carry her message around the electorate with every available resource of the LNP being made available to her,” Mr Henderson said. “The LNP will continue to provide whatever support is needed to Noeline to help her become the member for Kennedy right up until polling booths close on September 7.”

HOUSE & LAND PACKAGE!!
The Labor Party has gone back to the future with their candidate Andrew Turnour who contested the seat at the 2010 Federal Election – attracting 20 per cent of the vote. Mr Turnour was drafted in as candidate late in the campaign after the ALP’s first choice, Ken Robertson, was stood down for calling opposition leader Tony Abbott a racist. The remaining candidates are: Jenny Stirling, a social worker from Townsville, running for the Greens, Mareeba’s Dan Vogler for Family First, Mt Garnet pensioner Gordon Tuxford who is standing as an independent, George Brazier for Palmer United Party and Pamela Hecht a candidate for the fledgling Rise Up Australia Party. The Express’ Ryan Groube conducted interviews with the candidates as part of a three-page election guide for the seat of Kennedy which can be found on pages six to eight. Mr Brazier was the only candidate who couldn’t be reached by deadline.
