ITH the current road works on the Kuranda Range due to finish soon, concerns are being raised about the future capabilities of the link between Cairns and the Tablelands. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Tom Gilmore, said the road is extraordinar-

ily busy and used the terms “dismal” and “shambles” when describing his own experience of driving it. Cr Gilmore said a study into converting the road to a four-lane highway determined it would cost somewhere in the region of $800 million and would have to take into account the fact that the road runs through the Wet Tropics area meaning the project would have to

be managed in a way that was environmentally sensitive. “It’s very difficult to be environmentally sensitive if you’re going to four lane a road up a range through the Wet Tropics,” Cr Gilmore said. “However, without doing that, or something similar, what we’re going to find is that we’ve got a choke on the CONTINUED P3

Planting the seeds of the future By Katherine Kokkonen

MOUNT Molloy students have gotten their hands dirty for the environment. More than 20 students, from Prep to Year 7, planted trees along their school’s front fence line for Planet Ark’s National Tree Day, on Monday, July 28. Teacher Aide Juliana Russell said the students had a lot of fun while learning about the environment. “We like to do a lot of environmental work with the school,” she said. “It’s all imprinted early on, so they do understand about the environment. At this age, they are like little sponges.” After watching a demonstration on how to plant trees, the students got busy planting eleven trees ranging from Zigzag wattle to Tinaroo Dazzler. Ms Russell said as well as taking part in tree planting, students have been making the most of the school vegetable patch to learn about gardening and the environment. Planet Ark’s National Tree Day is sponsored annually by Toyota Australia.

By Mark Rigby MATHS wasn’t the only thing engaging minds at the 22nd annual Mathematics Enrichment Camp last week. 50 students from seven of the region’s high schools took part in the three-day camp, held at the Tinaroo Environmental Education Centre, and enjoyed a range of outdoor activities designed to challenge their above average mathematical minds. Camp coordinator, Terry McLelland, Head of the Mathematics Department at Mareeba State High School, said a vibrant group of students made for a highly successful camp. “Although the camp has naturally evolved over the past two decades, the base recipe hasn’t changed,” Mr McLelland said. Mareeba State High School students, Isobel Johnson and Jessica Heggie at-

tended the camp and said they had a great time learning navigational skills, canoeing and taking on a high-ropes course. “It was tonnes of fun and I would do it again in a heartbeat,” said Ms Johnson. “Everything we learned in the first two days was pulled together and used on the final day where our four teams were put to the test in a final race,” said Ms Heggie. “Coming away from the camp many of us have gained new friends and new skills,” she said. Mr McLelland said the camp was made all the more memorable with some beautiful lake weather. “When we blend a mixture of talented students, problem solving activities, camping techniques, canoeing and high-ropes activities, together in an impressive outdoor setting, the result has always been a rich new layer of relationships, experiences and memories.”

Nicole Mickan examines Queensland Senator Ian Mcdonald’s teeth at the upgraded Mareeba Rural Student Dental Clinic.

WAITING lists will decrease and the rural workforce will increase due to the upgraded Mareeba Rural Student Dental Clinic. The joint State Government and James Cook University initiative will provide triple the number of treatment chairs and be a rural training ground for dental students. The $2.6 million Clinic was officially opened by Queensland Health Minister Lawrence Springborg and Queensland Senator Ian Macdonald, on Thursday. The upgrade was jointly funded by Health Workforce Australia ($1.885 million) and the Commonwealth Department of Education’s Clinical Outreach Program ($800,000). Member for Cook David Kempton said the purpose-built facility would

Imagine what it’s likely to be in ten years time, if the ‘Aquis’ development goes ahead and people choose to live on the other side of the range but still work in Cairns.” “What we’re seeing is this ever-diminishing capacity of the road to handle what’s demanded of it, and that’s a real problem.” A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the current slope stabilisation works were due to finish by the end of August but have been held up by wet weather. “A separate project to widen priority curves on the

range is also being undertaken at night, which will reduce motorist delays,” the spokesperson said. Cr Gilmore said the current road works on the Kuranda Range are not doing anything to improve traffic flow and more needs to be done to account for future growth. “The question is, not whether we build a tunnel or not whether we build a four lane highway, but what is the best option for the future. “Let’s really do an analysis of the best option of getting people to and from the Tablelands to the coast over the next 50 years,” he said. “It really needs to be looked at and planned with a 50 year horizon.” A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said there are currently no plans to upgrade the Kuranda Range road.

bring much improved services to the region. “There are now six chairs, instead of two,” Mr Kempton said. “This means that the average waiting time to see a dentist now is less than four months, compared to January last year, when some patients had been waiting more than two years.” “There is a real feeling of strengthening our community, but there is also that training aspect.” The facility will allow for students in the final year of James Cook University’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree to cut their teeth in the industry. Annually, eight fifth year dental students will complete a semester of clinical placement at Mareeba Hospital. Students Nicole Mickan and Olivia Evans completed placements at

Mareeba, last semester, and found they had more opportunities than if they were placed in a metropolitan clinic. Ms Mickan said a lot of people were not travelling down to Cairns to access dental treatment, which meant when they started their placements there were patients who were in urgent need of dental care. Ms Evans put the delay in accessing dental treatment down to the country “she’ll be right, mate” attitude. “Even though Cairns is close to Mareeba, it was still a culture shock to see complex medical histories and advanced decay rates,” Ms Mickan said. “We’re not saying everyone in Mareeba is like that, but the people who had been waiting for access to this clinic for so long, you could really tell that this was needed,” Ms Evans said.

WHAT IS THIS?

Is it a moon going rocket? Perhaps a cream can from the dairy? Imaginative guesses, but here are some more clues to our mystery object. Do you know what these things are; Udometer, Pluviometer, and, or, Ombrometer? Meteorologists and Hydrologists know them as Rain Gauges, which gather and measure the amount of precipitation at one place over a set period of time. Obviously they would be rather more sophisticated than our “ordinary common or garden” rain gauges that we hang on our back fences. The first known rainfall records were kept by the Ancient Greeks about 500BC. About 400BC, people in India began to record rainfall to correlate against expected growth and used it as a basis for land taxes.

Telling the story of war By Mark Rigby ONE week after the declaration of World War One, thousands of north Queensland men set off on a journey to protect Australia from enemy forces in the Pacific. These men’s stories will finally be told when exhibitions throughout Queensland are unveiled on August 8, with libraries in Mareeba and Atherton both opening temporary exhibitions. The exhibition’s curator Dr Jo Wills, from the Queensland Museum, said most people think of Gallipoli as being Australia’s first involvement with World War One, but the real and immediate threat came from German colonies in the Pacific, including what was then called German New Guinea. “Many of these men were volunteers from North Queensland rifle clubs who had no pre-

vious military training,” Dr Wills said. “They were a real rag-tag bunch armed with poor provisions and quite poor training,” she said. The men were initially sent to Thursday Island to defend against possible enemy invasions and, after arriving, were asked if they wanted to sign on for active duty overseas. Those who did enlist soon headed to New Guinea to One of the pictures featured in the exhibition take control of German radio sta- shows North Queensland volunteers boarding tions that allowed enemy forces a vessel bound for Thursday Island from Cairns to communicate directly with Wharf. Dr Wills said the upcoming World War One and would give North Queensexhibitions were part of the 100 year com- landers an appreciation of the region’s particimemoration of Australia’s involvement in pation in the war effort.

At your Museum we have the Pluviometer that was at some time in use at the old Mareeba Post Office. Unfortunately, we do not have the facilities to have the pluviometer functioning. The spinning of the wheel and blast of the kiln gives potter Ken Ison peace of mind that work never did. Mr Ison will open up his studio as part of the Australian Ceramics Open Studio Tableland Trail on August 16 and 17. Enthusiastic ceramicists, keen potters and curious crafters eager to dabble will be welcomed in to have a look at Mr Ison’s studio. He hoped that people who come to the open studio get a taste for a hobby, whether it is pottery, gardening or woodturning. “What I see now being my age, I talk to a lot of blokes who go through life work, work, work without any hobbies. They get to the end of their work cycle and ques-

tion what to do next,” Mr Ison said. “I’d like to see some blokes come and get an idea.” Among the potting wheel, works in various stages of progress and kilns, Mr Ison toils away from morning to night— and he wouldn’t want it any other way. What started out as a hobby became a full time job in 2009. Mr Ison sells his pottery, including mugs, salt and pepper shakers, bowls. Across Far North Queensland, five potters will open their studios for Australian Ceramics Open Studios. Along with Ken Ison (Mareeba), Mollie Bosworth (Kuranda), Gabi Sturman (Yungaburra), Annette Tranter (Malanda) and Mecki Kracke (Herberton) will welcome the public into their studios.

Fight eases against wild dog battle

Jesse Tomasich had the grey cells working at the Brain Bee state finals.

By Mark Rigby

Jesse uses his brain in comp By Katherine Kokkonen A love for solving problems has taken science-loving student Jesse Tomasich to new heights at the Brain Bee state finals. Jesse, 14, competed against 143 Year 10 students from all over Queensland, making the semifinal and eventually earning seventh place. The competition involved reading a 100page first year university textbook on neuroscience and answering questions on the content.

Jesse admitted that before he entered the competition he had never studied the human brain. “I’d heard about this competition in Year 8, as soon as I heard the name I wanted to do it,” he said. “I’d always liked all the sciences, I like knowing how things work.” Jesse hopes one day to be a chemical engineer. As well as earning seventh place in the individual competition, Jesse was part of the Mareeba State High School team, who came sixth out of more than 50 schools.

Museum upgrade will commemorate By Mark Rigby EMU feathers and memorial plaques won’t be the only pieces of interest once an upgrade of the World War One display at the Mareeba Heritage Museum is complete. The museum is currently upgrading the display to mark the 100 year commemoration of Australia’s involvement in The Great War. Museum Curator Mary Thompson, said the upgraded display will feature a sandbag bunker with soldiers and rifles, as well as periscopes that soldiers would have used to look over trench walls. “We’re also going to have an interactive periscope that kids can use and we’re hoping that it will have a little moving battle scene for them to look at,” Mrs Thompson said. The museum’s display currently features a copper memorial plaque with the names of World War One soldiers from Woothakata Shire. Also on display are a number of artillery shells and memorabilia from the era, as well as a mannequin dressed in a light horseman’s uniform, complete with emu feathers in the hat. Mrs Thompson said Queensland light horseman would often chase emus on horseback during the shearers’ strikes of the 1890s. “If they could lean down off their

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

horse and grab a handful of emu feathers then they had the right to wear them in their hats,” she said. “When they went off to war all the Queenslanders had emu feathers in their hats and the other Australian soldiers wanted them too. The Queenslanders told them if they wanted them they could go home and catch their own bloody emus.” Mrs Thompson said the museum has compiled a list of about 465 soldiers from the Tablelands district that served in World War One and hoped that the upgraded display will remind visitors and locals of the region’s involvement. Assistant Museum Curator Jackie Morris, said it’s important that Australia’s involvement, and indeed Queensland’s involvement, in World War One is remembered and commemorated and that is part of the reason the decision was made to upgrade the current display. “I think there’s a lot to be learnt. We shouldn’t be celebrating, it was never a case of celebration, but it’s a commemoration and it should never be forgotten,” Mrs Morris said. “There is this realisation that we’re in a country that was worth fighting for. These men went off, they were volunteers, they weren’t subscripted, they were volunteers and it’s an important thing that we’re all aware of this,” she said.

THE ongoing fight against wild dogs is set to become easier with the announcement of State Government policy changes. The LNP government has put an initiative in place that allows approved retailers to sell 1080 baits to landholders with baiting permits. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister John McVeigh, announced the change in Charleville last week and said it will help landholders and communities tackle the problem of wild dogs. “This is a standout example of how the LNP government is turning things around ... We can’t make it rain but we can help graziers, councils and their communities with common sense changes to help them fight the menace of wild dogs,” said Mr McVeigh. Mr McVeigh said licensed retailers are now able to apply for approval to supply 1080 baits to landholders who hold a Bait User Permit, which landholders can apply for from Biosecurity Queensland. “Under Labor, only public sector employees accredited by Queensland Health could provide 1080 baits to rural landholders,” he said. Mareeba Shire Council’s Senior Land Protection Officer Sid Clayton said he hoped that landholders using baits under the new changes would be required to keep records. Mr Clayton said Mareeba Shire Council currently offers a free baiting service and did not anticipate many of the Shire’s landholders paying for a service they have free access to. He said if landholders did choose to take advantage of the changes it would reduce the heavy workload that Council currently undertakes in controlling wild dogs and other feral animals in the region.

EXPRESS yourself Skating in the dark I don’t know if anyone else has noticed that the Skate Park at Ravenshoe is in total darkness when the sun goes down every evening. Also, I noticed that the public toilets across the road from the skate park are also in darkness. I feel this should be a serious concern as it could be a haven for predators to prey on our young folk as there is no lighting in the area and, if I can remember, there is a sign at the skate park stating that the park can be used up to 10pm. When I saw this, I attempted to contact the TRC (Tablelands Regional Council) so far no one there has returned my calls on this extremely important safety issue. I feel the safety of our young people must and should take priority as I would hate to read or hear about something horrific that has happened due to no lighting in these areas. Please, I ask all concerned to call or write to the TRC and tell them of the concerns here. David Armstrong, Ravenshoe

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thanks to TRC I write to thank the Tablelands Regional Council for its unanimous decision to remove the draft Biodiversity and Wetlands and Watercourse Corridors overlay codes from the Tableland Regional Plan, in response to the feedback received from the community. I would like to especially thank Mayor Rosa Lee Long, and Councillors Geoff Stocker and Peter Hodge, for their leadership, and MP Michael Trout for his effective representations to State Government ministers to achieve this result. Thanks must also go to the many community members who stood up against what they saw as an attack on freehold property rights. Finally, thank you to the local papers for providing the opportunity for members of the community to have their say on such an important issue. Gary Scott, Atherton

Express Congratulations Congratulations to the team at The Express for having the talent, professionalism and guts to call a spade a spade. Last week’s story about the real situation and the scores of formal complaints against TRC Councillors and your earlier TRC budget story were enlightening and balanced. The professional investigative journalism of your reporter is a true asset for this region. TRC deputy CEO Matt Hyde is also to be congratulated for doing his job without fear or favour and in the public interest. Mr Hyde’s responses, as printed in last week’s Express, are nothing more and nothing less than what was required of him in his capacity as acting CEO. One has to wonder why the other so called local newspaper and The Cairns Post are unwilling or unable to break or cover the real local stories. Keep up the good work ladies and gents. Music program gets a boost

Mareeba State High School’s music program will receive extra State Government funding to improve student access to musical

instruments. David Kempton, the Member for Cook, said the school would receive another $4000 to purchase

more instruments for students involved in the instrumental music program. “This additional funding will help the transition of Year 7 into secondary school in 2015 and ensure students have access to the instruments and expertise they need,” said Mr Kempton. Mareeba State High is one of more than 200 state schools which have benefited from the Queensland Government’s injection of a total of $1 million in additional funding into secondary music programs.

Exercise draws to a close SOLDIERS from Exercise Hamel 2014 will soon be returning home from training areas throughout North Queensland. Exercise Hamel 2014 was conducted over 350km of North Queensland, including in Atherton and Mareeba, making it the largest Army training activity of the year. Director General – Training of the Australian Army’s Forces Command Brigadier Mark Brewer said the exercise had been a great success and he was impressed by the professional conduct of the soldiers. “Exercise Hamel 2014 aimed to evaluate the Army’s reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence capability as an enabler to our combat force, and this was accomplished,” Brigadier Brewer said. “The support from the people of North Queensland has been tremendous. In addition, junior secondary students also have the opportunity to take part in a percussion program called “Drumbeat”, which targets student wellbeing. Seniors Week 2014 is coming up, from 16th to 24th August. And at Yuruga Nursery we’re celebrating Seniors Week for the WHOLE MONTH of August! By simply flashing your Seniors Card, seniors will get a 20% discount off all plants in all pot sizes (excluding fruit trees), and that is on top of our every day discounts for bulk. Buy ten plants and save ten dollars plus another 20% discount for simply being older and wiser - how fantastic is that? As time is of the essence for our seniors, Yuruga Nursery can offer a wide range of fast growing plants that will return your efforts with flowers, fragrance and foliage in short order. Why not try some Callistemons or Grevilleas? How about some Acacias or Eucalypts? Don’t forget that gardening is not just a visual reward – texture, smell, taste and touch all play a vital role – especially if you are vision impaired. How about some unusual herbs and plants that release their aroma when the leaves are crushed? Native Rosemary has attractive foliage and delicate flowers plus it can be used in cooking or in the linen cupboard. Lemon scented gums and tea trees are fast growing and their leaves have a heavenly citrus aroma. Even if your garden is full to overflowing, there is always room for a few more plants. If you have a lot of tall, established trees put in some understorey shrubs and ground covers. Why not reduce you lawn area and create new gardens? Reduce the high maintenance exotic annuals and perennials with low growing flowering natives such as Cat’s Whiskers or Native Violets. And don’t forget that potted plants can be placed all over the place, not just on the back patio. They can provide splashes of colour or contain a specialty feature plant. Make this month a great opportunity to celebrate the wisdom and valuable contribution that our elders make to society. Get those grandkids away from their technology and out into the garden. There is nothing more therapeutic and relaxing for folks of all ages to have their hands in the soil. It is an enjoyable and gentle exercise and the grandkids can do any hard digging for you!

See you at Yuruga (and don’t forget your Seniors Card!)

On a roll with mobile green By Katherine Kokkonen Get set for a crackerjack of a day when the world’s first mobile indoor lawn bowls green rolls into town. Holiday company AAT Kings has stripped the interior of one of its luxury vehicles, removing almost all seats and replaced it with a state-of-the-art lawn bowls green. The coach will tour the country before attempting a Guinness World Record for the longest indoor bowls playing marathon. The mobile indoor lawn bowls green will be at the Mareeba Bowling Club 9am–11am on August 18 before heading down to the Atherton Bowls Club from 1pm to 3pm.

AAT Kings employees have a crack on the world’s first mobile indoor lawn bowls green.

AAT Kings Managing Director Anthony Hayes said the idea came after researching their client base and discovering a huge percentage of travellers come from country towns. “We wanted to do something that would say thank you to regional Australia and this was outside the usual,” he said. “Everyone is just turning up because it is a bit strange and just a bit of fun—it has been terrific so far.” Mr Hayes had played barefoot bowls while at university, but was unprepared for competitive nature of country bowls. To ensure that the mobile green is up to standard, a spirit level is used to guarantee the surface is flat and the wheels are

raised if parked on an uneven road. Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club President Cameron Thompson has been playing bowls for more than 35 years, but is keen to try out the mobile green. “It’s an interesting concept,” he said. “It should be fun and it’s a way of trying it out without having to go out of your way because it comes to you.” AAT Kings is teaming up with local retail partner Travel Experience in Atherton and Mareeba to bring the mobile greens to local clientele. It is free to have a go on the mobile green and every person who participates will be given a $100 AAT Kings discount voucher.

Mareeba Lioness Club NEWS With Lyn Simpson, Publicity Officer

Mareeba Rodeo is over for 2014 and we’d like to thank our entrant in the Rodeo Queens competition Madalyn Wallace for her time and all the effort she put in to this event while representing the Lions and Lioness Clubs. Our float received third place in the downtown procession and looked really great. Thanks to all the hard work that went into the making of it. We enjoyed the working bee and had fun at the same time. Mareeba Lioness Club is gearing up for our annual Pink Ribbon Garden Party. This year it will be held on August 23, in the picturesque gardens of John and Delsi Delai at Ray Road. The gates will open at 12.30 and we look forward to renewing old acquaintances and many new people to our fun filled afternoon. It is a tremendous cause to increase breast cancer awareness and all profits raised to Queensland Cancer Council. Tickets are available at Blue Lagoon in Byrnes Street Mareeba. Currently we are busy selling raffle tickets in the huge Pink Ribbon Raffles. Tickets are available from the Lionesses who will be outside NAB and also near IGA at Mareeba Shopping Centre. Every year Lioness Clubs are invited to enter in the prestigious

Fonnie Tresise “Premier Project” Award. This award is made to acknowledge commitment and dedication to service projects that have been successfully planned and organised, and work to assist those in our communities that are less fortunate than ourselves. The event we entered for consideration was our annual Pink Ribbon Garden Party for last year. We were lucky enough to make it into the finals against four other zone finalists. It was a huge accolade for the club and we were really thrilled with our success. Our club is kept busy taking part in their volunteering commitments in our local community. We help with the Hospital Trolley to assist those people in hospital with reading material etc. We also volunteer with delivering meals for Meals on Wheels and helping at the Football canteen during home games. Then there is our monthly Pensioners Morning Tea and Bingo on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 9am. We also meet monthly at the CWA Hall in Mareeba on the first Wednesday of the month.

The app simplifies the record keeping process involved in farm inductions by allowing workers to complete the app in discussion with the farm owner or manager, and then having a record of the process emailed to both parties. The Express contacted a number of farmers in the region who said they had heard little about the new application and raised concerns about its viability in rural and remote locations where mobile phone reception can be poor.

National livestock transport laws in place The six month grace period for new livestock transport requirements introduced in January expired on Friday. Queensland’s Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Allison Crook said the new laws outline the basic principles that everyone transporting livestock must use to protect the welfare of the livestock being transported. “To achieve a nationally consistent approach to livestock transport, the laws now reflect

the national standards and align Queensland with other states and territories,” Dr Crook said. “The new laws commenced on 31st of January 2014, however to ensure stakeholders are familiar with the new laws, a six month grace period for enforcement was granted. “The laws apply to the transport of both commercial and noncommercial livestock and start once livestock are assembled prior to loading and continue until the

animals are unloaded at the final destination. The laws provide standards that animals selected for transport must be fit for the intended journey. It is the responsibility of the people involved to ensure livestock are fit for transport.” For information on the national livestock transport standards, visit www.animalwelfarestandards.net. au Alternatively, producers can contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or visit www.business. qld.gov.au for additional info.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

JERSEY BOYS

SEX TAPE

To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan invites locals to head out to Relay and show their support to participating teams.

Fundraising at Relay

When teams hit the track at Relay For Life, the fundraising fun continues!

Face painting stands pop up around Relay tent sites, tables are erected with crafts and nibbles for sale, raffles are sold, auctions held, and photo booths are in action. All this is done for one simple reason – to support all Queenslanders affected by cancer! Raising funds help Cancer Council Queensland reduce the burden cancer can have on rural communities by investing into cancer support, information and research. It’s the reason teams are so driven to raise what they can, and why they sign up for Relay For Life in the first place. For fundraising to be successful, teams need your support. Even if you’re unable to take part in the Relay, please pop down and visit us at Davies Park during the September event. Your encouragement and support is always welcomed! By coming down for an hour or two and cheering on those who are hitting the track, or assisting teams with their on-site fundraising ef-

forts, you’re making a difference and motivating participants. While visiting, you’re also invited to take part in one of the inspirational ceremonies held at Relay For Life – the survivors and carers walk at 3pm, the candlelight ceremony at 7pm, and the fight back ceremony at 9am on Sunday morning. QT’s Early Learning Centre Relay team member Kirstin Veivers said her team is leading by example with on-site fundraising this year by running a face painting stall at Relay. Fundraising doesn’t have to be difficult – it can be as simple as asking for a small donation from friends or selling a raffle to nearby camp sites. The variety of fundraising activities is only limited by your imagination! Make sure you mark a time in your diary to come out to Relay, show your support, and find out what we are all about – you won’t regret it! Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on September 13-14 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register visit relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

Ingredients

Method 1. Place lemon juice, sugar, coconut water, and water into a pitcher and shake or stir vigorously until all the sugar is dissolved. I prefer to shake because it aerates the lemonade and makes a nice head on top. 2. Pour 1/2 of the lavender syrup into the pitcher and stir.

Tableland Hockey weekend round-up Khanacross Series Embers Cup Another round of the FNQMSC 2014 Khanacross Series was held at Tepon Raceway, Herberton on the weekend of July 26 and 27. In all there were 13 entrants, including two juniors and an entrant in the Ladies Class. New members also to took to the track to try out their driving skills. The Tepon khanacross tracks provide a variety of experiences for drivers, with some tracks including wide sweeping corners and others requiring more manoeuvring skills with trees close to the tracks and many frequent corners to negotiate. Drivers are warned not to stray off the defined tracks as hidden obstacles, such as tree stumps, may cause damage to the vehicles. Khanacrosses are up to 1.5km long, held on unsealed surfaces and defined as not being a speed event, with no straight longer than 90 metres, so driver skill is tested. For the junior drivers it is an excellent opportunity to learn car handling skills and develop confidence. For the more experienced drivers it is the chance to push yourself and your vehicle sometimes to the limit in order to win the prized trophies. Camping facilities are available, with dinner and breakfast provided as part of the entry fee. Usually most people choose to camp overnight and enjoy the campfire and share their experiences with the other club members. The next Khanacross is being held at Tepon Raceway on August 30 and 31. For those who are keen to race on the bitumen, the next Mako Trac Bitumen Sprint will be held at Mareeba on August 17. The FNQMSC will also be present and hold an event at the Cairns Autospectacular, at the Cairns Showgrounds on the weekend of August 23 and 24. Further information about the FNQMSC events is available on www.fnqmsc.com

The U10’s round robin is extremely tight with only one point separating Sharks and Raiders. The last four rounds will be crucial to determine the leader board. The Raiders again showed great determination in their first game against the Sharks. Adam Keevers and Connor West were dominant in the box scoring a goal apiece in their win over the Raiders. Emily Simmonds, Clayton Meannie and Cooper McIntosh were great in defence for Raiders. In a quick turnaround Sharks played All Stars in a great game. Talytha McDonald scored the only two goals of the game with All Stars having a great win over Sharks. All Stars maintained their dominance on the field against the Raiders with a 2/0 win over Raiders. Kevin Elliot and Jhai Mehmet scored the goals to lead them to victory. With the All Stars top of the ladder the remaining games will be closely contested. The U13’s saw some fast action. The Vikings

and Troopers faced off in a great game with the end result not truly reflective of the intensity of the game. With the support of Mitch Toward and B Draper Vikings came out on top 2/0. In the final game of the division Frankie Constant, Hayley Fullgrabe and Abby Toshach all scored for the All Stars, however Scorchers showed some serious form with Georgia Rivett scoring a brilliant goal in the second half. A great game with the final score of 4/1 All Stars. The U17 teams continue to impress with fast, action packed thrills and spills. Bombers were dominant against the All Stars in a great display of skill and gamesmanship. Will Coleman put two in the box supported by Tom Watson, Oliver Phillips and Nick Watson. Katrina Lange scored the sole goal for the All Stars but again a fantastic game all round. Voodoos continue to hold top of the ladder with a sound win over Totally Titled. Sophie

Gampe scored a hat trick of goals for the Stars. Jaguars worked hard against the U15 Boys Team with Jamye French and Alex Wright scoring fantastic goals, but were outplayed in an thrilling game. Nathan McDonald was the stand out player of the game scoring four goals for the U15 Boys. Seniors Fixtures saw Waterloo battle it out against Plastered Vets. In a close game Carrie DeBruey and Anna Roberts put away a goal a piece for a Plastered 2/0 win. Woteva played hard against Totally Holcim with Maria Kiely and Olive Turcinvioc both scoring for Holcim in their win. Cruisers continue to go from strength to strength with the team continuing to put pressure on the opposition. Cruisers were unlucky not to have a draw with the final score 1/0 in favour of Pluckers. Shooters went down to Belair in an intense game that saw Angela Wood and Helen Harris score a goal apiece for Belair in the 2/0 win.

Bridget Seymour-Jones has been doing athletics since she was 8 years of age, she said “love the social aspect and the competitive nature of the sport. I like winning, it’s always good”. Jennifer Moss said “I was 10 when I started little Athletics and I love competing against friends, Tim Ford from Atherton comthe hammer throw is my favourite petes in the Shotput. event”. The regional two day championships will be held in Tolga in about four weeks’ time and from there athletes can represent the area for the state tiles later in the year. The Express Newspaper will keep you informed on any upcoming events.

Pride comes Gymnastics championships to Skate Park By Carl Portella

SOME 150 Gymnasts from across the region converged on Atherton at the weekend to compete in the 2014 Far North Queensland Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) Junior Regional Championships at Atherton Gymnastics Club. The event saw gymnasts from seven clubs compete on apparatus such as the vault, uneven bars and balance beam, as well as completing floor routines to demonstrate a series of tumbles and other strength and flexibility displays. Dianne Stevens from the Atherton gymnastics club said “This is huge for the club to get such an event which is sanctioned by Gymnastics Queensland and we had to meet certain criteria to be able to stage the event”. “It also benefits the community because we do get a lot of spectators from all over to come and watch and for our staff members it’s very beneficial because we’re deal-

ing with very professional people from Gold Coast and Brisbane who have flown up specifically, we even have the pleasure of having the president of Gymnastics Queensland Tracey Brooks here for the day”. She went on to say “There are six big events throughout the year but two major events, regional championships and state championships, this is the first time in twenty five years that a regional championship has been held on the tablelands. For the size of our population we have quite a number of kids that participate at these events”. “Gymnastics is a great spectator sport and these events always prove popular with families who either have an interest in the sport or who have young children thinking about getting involved,” said Ms. Stevens. The Gymnastics Queensland Regional Championship events provide a wonderful opportunity for the community to support local gymnasts who will compete against the best in the region.

School kids were in for a treat when Beau Champion from South Sydney Rabbitohs and Blake Leary from Northern Pride came to the Mareeba Skate Park. Champion and Leary talked to students about the importance of keeping the park clean and working as a team to make sure the park is there for everyone for years to come. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the theme of the day was having pride in your park and hoped having high profile sportspeople deliver the message would be effective. "I'm damn near 70, bald and wearing a tie. Do you think they are going to listen to me? They're not and I wouldn't blame them," he said. Brendan Grogan Creed, 11, uses the skate park and though it was good to have the two league players’ visit. "It was good, it's good to keep it clean because this is a good place for kids to play," he said. Pride in the Park will continue this Saturday, with seven Northern Pride Players visiting Mareeba Skate Park from 12 noon onwards.
