areeba is no longer on a three-year rollout plan for the National Broadband Network (NBN). Details of NBN Co’s construction plan have been removed from the Commonwealth Government-owned business’ website “pending the introduction of new Government policy”. Previously, the website had shown construction of high-speed broadband infrastructure was due to begin in Mareeba in 2016. Now it simply lists rollout details as ‘not currently available’.

It comes amid a 60-day review of NBN Co’s performance with a focus on different ways of delivering broadband to homes and businesses, including options that are cheaper but deliver slower download speeds. Lobby groups from across the Far North have vowed to do everything they can to reinstate Mareeba to the rollout list but say they need the help of the public. The Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC) was the key agency in securing Mareeba’s place on the original rollout plan after having a 79-page submission accepted

by NBN Co. FNQROC chief executive Darlene Irvine said the organisation had engaged fellow lobby group Advance Cairns to keep the far north on the Government’s broadband agenda. A representative from Advance Cairns has met with Queensland’s Minister for Information Technology Ian Walker who asked for a briefing document on the need for reliable and high-speed communications in the far north. “We have an undertaking from Mr Walker that he will raise the matter with [Federal Communications Minister] Malcolm Turnbull,” Ms Irvine

said. “Advance Cairns will be driving this but their efforts will be helped if we get support from the public. “We don’t need table thumping, that doesn’t work. What we need is the community to voice their concerns using real scenarios about opportunities will be lost if this is taken from us.” Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has “grievous concerns” that the removal of Mareeba from the list meant the national broadband would not be rolled out at all in the town. “If you aren’t on a timeline it is not going to get done,” he said. ‘I want clean streets’ By Boyd Robertson Keith Nelson is taking the trash out in Mareeba, one street at a time.

Politicians often talk about ‘cleaning up the streets’ but one Mareeba man is out there doing it for real. Keith Nelson, 69, has dedicated himself to becoming a one-man cleaning machine, sweeping Mareeba’s streets six mornings out seven picking up litter, all for free. Armed with just a plastic bag and a pair of pole-mounted nippers, Keith’s goal is to turn Mareeba from what he describes as “one of the most littered towns in Queensland” to somewhere that is inviting to tourists and grey nomads, and is calling for the soon-to-be Mareeba Shire Council to get tough on trash. The Express joined Keith on one of his early-morning missions on November 1 for a lap of Byrnes Street, starting from McDonalds at 6:30am. Along the way he related his story in between picking up refuse with the nippers, which were donated to him by the TRC. “These are dead handy,” he said, deftly pinching a crushed soft-drink can between the device’s tips and transferring it into the plastic bag in his other hand. “When I started out I was reaching down and picking things up with my hands – it did my back in something fierce.” Keith started his mission midway through 2012, after deciding the place needed a good cleaning up. “The council runs a street sweeper nine days a fortnight, but trash is dropped seven days a week,” he said. “No-one’s really policing it and so it piles up. “I think we need to take pride in our town and keep it clean – the new council

should introduce either on-the-spot fines for littering or if someone is caught throwing down trash they should be put to work cleaning it up.” Keith reckons, as a former grey nomad himself, that plenty of the wrinkly wanderers bypass the town simply because of the rubbish cluttering its streets. “I can tell you from experience that if you’re cruising through a town sometimes you take one look and if it’s full of rubbish you just keep on going,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of grey nomads turning up here already because of things like Christmas in July, the Wheelbarrow Race and the Rodeo, but we could have more if the streets weren’t like this.” According to Keith the messiest part of town is the southern side of the intersection between Byrnes and Atherton streets – but he reckons he’s starting to make a dent in the tide of trash. “When I first started doing this I’d fill up five bags easy, ten or more on a bad day,” he said. “Now a normal day is two or three bags, so I am seeing a difference.” Keith’s efforts got him nominated for a Communitarian of the Year Award from the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce – and although he didn’t end up winning it he still received a glowing recommendation from chamber head Pietro Girgenti. “We’re more than just a bunch of houses and a strip of shops here – we are a community,” Mr Girgenti said. “There are outstanding individuals that want to make Mareeba a great place to live and therefore a great place to work. “Keith and people like him exemplify that.”

Express story boosts church donations By Boyd Robertson SENIOR JOURNALIST Ryan Groube

JOURNALIST Boyd Robertson

A surge in donations to the Living Waters Church’s Food Bank during the month of October has supplied the church with enough donations to provide for the needy until the end of the year, according to founder Pastor Jeff Xhafer. After appearing on the front page of The Express on October 2 encouraging the Tableland community to donate nonperishable food, the church has received enough non-perishable food to give out ten parcels to the hungry during the month. It brings the total number of food parcels distributed since the church started the Food Bank in 2003 to 796.

Each parcel contains roughly $80 to $100 worth of food, and is given away for free after a short interview to determine that the person receiving it really needs it. Ps Xhafer said the increase in donations couldn’t have come at a better time. “We’ve gone from a point that we were opening the cupboard to look and being down to the last few items left to where we are now looking at being able to go right through to Christmas and New Year,” he said. “We’ve also had another church drop off some packages of food recently which we reckon is amazing – we love to promote church unity and this shows how it’s not just about us but the whole community.”

Although celebrating this result for the month of October, Ps Xhafer was keen to remind the community that the Food Bank was open all year and donations were welcome at any time. The Express’s managing editor, Carl Portella, said numerous people had dropped off food at the paper’s Walsh Street office, which was nominated as a collection point along with Travel Experience Atherton. “We had an immediate response here at the office after the first story ran on October 2,” Mr Portella said. “Several people have come in and donated quite a large amount of food to the church’s Food Bank – it’s always great to see our community

here being so generous.” Ps Xhafer said that the parcels made all the difference to those in need, and the church would continue to distribute food to the public. “I don’t see an end to the need,” Mr Xhafer said. “Honestly I think things are going to get tougher for people before they get easier – that’s we ask everyone to remember people that might be less fortunate.” Despite now accumulating a decent reserve of food for the charity, Ps Xhafer said the church would not “lower its standards” in determining who really needs the help. “There are times when we have been abused and we’re prepared to accept that,” he said.

Chillagoe Alliance president David Chant says poor reception in Chillagoe made having a television worthless.

FOR a decade Chillagoe residents have been paying for a television service that rarely works and now they’ve had enough. The Chillagoe Alliance, the small western town’s lobby group, has demanded that the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) refund the money spent on the town’s transmission tower. As part of the switchover from digital to analogue television, the self-help retransmission facility had to be upgraded at a cost of $104,049. The cost is being met by a handful of ratepayers who make an annual payment through their rates to the Special Chillagoe Benefitted Levy. Since the digital upgrade, residents have made a series of complaints to the TRC about: the sound and image being out of time, not being able to pick up most channels and the screen image freezing intermittently. Chillagoe Alliance president David Chant said residents were sick of forking out money for something that didn’t work. “We’ve wasted too much money on this already. Enough is enough, it is time to pull the gear out and give us a full refund,” he said. “When the contractors come out to do repairs they don’t get back to Cairns before the thing is playing up again. “The majority of people are just so sick of it that we want our money back so we can get satellite [television].” The call for a refund comes as the TRC are preparing to host a community meeting in Chillagoe to brief residents on fur-

ther upgrades that need to be made at the site to improve reliability. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said any outstanding issues with the site were close to being resolved and urged residents to be patient for a little while longer. Cr Lee Long said the upgrade of the facility from analogue to digital had only occurred on April 12 and that council was doing all it could to make the facility more reliable. “Considering the time frame that the retransmission site was upgraded on 12/04/2013, the site is still experiencing teething problems which have not been anticipated,” she said. “Things to factor in here are not only the geographical location of Chillagoe but the site has also dealt with natural causes (power outages from storms). “The digital reception has a tendency to be intermittent dependent on weather, location and environment. “Council is continuing in its endeavours to ensure that the digital service from the Chillagoe retransmission site is less troublesome than the previous analogue system.” At the request of divisional councillor Gaye Taylor, the TRC will conduct an independent audit of the digital upgrade at Chillagoe. A date for the community meeting has yet to be announced as the TRC are waiting on technical details from Ergon Energy “regarding the measurement of the electricity voltage from the mains” leading to the site. N-Com, the contractor who upgraded the facility, failed to respond to The Express’ request for comment.

Mareeba NBN rollout in doubt From Page 1 “That will leave us on the old [telecommunications] system which has all but collapsed.” Tablelands Futures Corporation chairman Michael Lawrence said Mareeba being removed from the rollout list was a blow for the rest of the Tableland. He said although southern Tableland towns weren’t included in the threeyear rollout, once the infrastructure had been established in Mareeba it could then be established across the region. “As a region we don’t want to be taking backward steps. What we had before was a clear timeframe, we need to get that again,” he said. “We can’t afford as a region to say

‘too bad’ and continue as business as usual, getting access to high speed broadband is too important.” Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Pietro Girgenti said he would be surprised if Mareeba wasn’t reinstated to the rollout plan following the review. “It would be alarming if we weren’t returned to the rollout plan as it would be inconsistent with the message that the Government [LNP] took to the election that growing regional areas would be prioritised,” he said. “The chamber is very interested in following this matter through.” The Express sought comment from NBN Co but no response was forthcoming by deadline.

Union pledge to save jobs By Ryan Groube THE union representing workers transferring to the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) has reached out to Mayoral candidates and councillors seeking a pledge that jobs will be protected. The Services Union is seeking a commitment from Tom Gilmore and Mick Borzi that a new MSC won’t slash its workforce in a bid to find savings. Acting secretary Jennifer Thomas said The Services Union had made contact with candidates last week, but Mr Borzi said he hadn’t heard from them and Mr Gilmore said he had missed a call early in the week and had heard nothing since. Last week, MSC transfer manager Rod Ferguson handed down the interim structure for the new council. Mr Ferguson is required under de-amalgamation regulation to find a position for each of the 250 staffers transferring to the MSC in the interim structure. Once the MSC begins operating on January 2, 2014, council will make a final ruling on the structure and the positions that will be kept and those that will be axed. “The interim structure provides the information about where staff will sit within the new Mareeba Shire so that when they turn up for work on the first day they know who their boss is and what their job is,” Mr Ferguson said. “Once the new council starts they will determine if they have too many people or too many people with the same skill set or if their employee costs are too high.” Ms Thomas says staff are concerned that new councils looking at finding costs savings may be too hasty in reducing the size of their workforce. “We have written to each of the Mayoral candidates and councillors so that they are aware of the situation that these people who have been placed on these transfer lists who are feeling very uncertain about their futures,” she said. “We are asking those candidates to adhere to the principals that they will adopt a structure that will max-

Both said that they valued the job that council staff did and would be open and fair in their decisions.

School captain ‘honoured’ By Boyd Robertson St Stephens Catholic College (SSCC) captain Kai Priestly, 17, has come away from the school’s annual awards night at the Mareeba International Club on October 28 with a swag of awards including Dux, the Rotary All Rounder Award, the Claude Caters Mensland Award and the SSCC Public Speaking Award. Fellow student Hope Musch, 18, received the Sister Mary Stephen Award, which is named for a former principal and awarded for high moral character, integrity and supporting other students in need. Other winners on the night included Kiara Diamond, who took out Vocational Student of the Year, Rachel Stefanutti, who won the Mareeba-Dimbulah Community Bank Award for Citizenship and Byrnes Street Medical Bursary recipient Kate Donovan.

Ms Priestly told The Express she felt “honoured’ to receive her numerous awards. “I want to thank my classmates, my teachers, the school and my parents for their support and friendship for the last five years,” she said. Ms Priestly advised students in younger grades looking to match her accomplishments to “give everything your best, try as hard as you can and enjoy it while it lasts because you’ll be amazed how fast high school goes.” She has applied to the University of Queensland in Brisbane and hopes to study law. Ms Musch said being named the recipient of the Sister Mary Stephen was “a privilege.” New principal Ida Pinese said in her speech that St Stephens students were “developing a strong sense of social justice”, evidenced by raising more than $8000 for diabetes in the Great Wheelbarrow race and numerous other fundraising projects.

‘Opportunity to celebrate achievements’ Atherton State High School principal Tony Whybird and Dux Matthew Bakss. By Boyd Robertson The best and brightest students at Atherton State High School (ASHS) have been recognized in a ceremony held in the school’s hall on October 31. Matthew Bakss, 16, was named Senior Dux while Junior Secondary Dux was awarded to Jessica Honan. Elyna Overland received the All Rounder Award and Karlie Riesen won Senior Sportsperson of the Year. Nanotechnology enthusiast and dancer Grace Lawrence won the School Representation Award. James McGregor won the Vocational Excellence Award, while dedicated behind-the-scenes worker Garret Magian won both the School Service Award and the Atherton RSL Bursary. Mr Bakss said he was “pretty happy” to be unexpectedly named Dux. “I really didn’t see it coming,” he said. A keen physics student, Mr Bakss has applied to the University of Queensland for an engineering course, and plans to stay at St Leo’s College. Ms Lawrence, who gained a scholarship to the prestig-

ious Professor Harry Messel International Science School in May and also appeared in the 2013 Creative Generation dance performance in Brisbane in June, said the work she had put into her respective fields was “all worth it.” Ms Lawrence plans to enter the field of noetic science, which deals with the mind, intellect, philosphy and how thought affects the physical world. Principal Tony Whybird said the awards night was an “opportunity for the whole community to come together to celebrate the achievements of these talented students.” “Often sporting achievements are what attract a lot of attention in school – this is a chance for us to recognise the academic side of things,” he said. “Seeing the older students receiving this recognition also inspires the younger generation to strive for the best results.” In his opening address Mr Whybird also delivered a parable of circus fleas unwilling to jump high enough to escape a glass box due to becoming accustomed to a transparent lid that was no longer there. He cautioned students not to fall into the same trap and to strive to excel in whatever path they chose in life.

Profits from building sale to ‘rejuvenate’ TAFE system By Boyd Robertson The proceeds from the sale of the former Mareeba TAFE site at Tinaroo Creek Road will go into “rejuvenating the TAFE system”, according to TAFE Queensland CEO Jodi Schmidt. However, it is unclear if the current local sub-campus will receive any extra funding as a result of the $1.3 million sale. When asked if the funds from the sale would return to the current Mareeba TAFE sub-campus, which operates under the administration of the main campus in Cairns,

Ms Schmidt’s response was broad. “The TAFE facilities at 39 Byrnes Street, Mareeba are leased premises that are being used to meet the demand for training in the Mareeba area,” she said. “This arrangement allows TAFE Queensland to focus on delivering programs that give the community the skills they need to get a job rather than investing in a facility that costs thousands to maintain. “As we work to create a stronger TAFE Queensland, our focus will be on investing in better programs, delivered by experienced teachers using a variety of flexible learning methods that suit the student of today.”

Mareeba & Dimbulah Community Bank® branches Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth has failed in a bid to halt a new levy that will see Mt Uncle director Bruce Watkins slugged $37,000 a year for his family-owned distillery.

Fire levy will still go ahead By Ryan Groube DALRYMPLE MP Shane Knuth’s lastditch bid to halt the introduction of the Emergency Management Fire and Rescue Levy has failed. From January 1, rural landowners and businesses will begin to be slugged with the State Government levy, which is expected to raise $24 million next financial year. Most rural ratepayers will be hit with a $90 bill while businesses are hit with a greater annual fee depending on what their land is used for. Mt Uncle Distillery is at the higher end of the scale, facing an annual bill of $37,500. The levy will be collected through council rates and will go into a general pool to fund emergency services following a series of expensive natural disaster clean-ups in recent years. Mr Knuth conceded that any effort to stop the levy before January 1 “appears to be lost” but said once residents started to get the bill in the mail the State Government would again be forced to look at the levy. “I am very disappointed my motion didn’t get up but this isn’t the end of this. When people start getting their bill of anywhere between $90 and $37,000 then they are not going to be happy and the State Government will cop it from them,” he said.

“My motion gave the rural members of the Government an opportunity to stand up for their rural members but instead they have dodged, ducked and hidden from the debate. “The sad part about all of this is that the money collected from these people will not be returned to them. It goes into a general pool and other people will get the services.” Member for Cook David Kempton fired a broadside at Mr Knuth, calling his proposed changes to the legislation as illconceived and unworkable. “The Member for Dalrymple presented this bill without consulting with or attempting to gain the support of the Government,” he said. “It was completely ill-conceived, badly prepared and entirely unworkable, that is why it failed to get up. “Had Shane taken the time to discuss his concerns with myself or our Government, he would not have had to waste time with an ill-conceived attempt to overturn legislation. “This is indicative of our government’s approach to community concerns and shows how ineffective Mr Knuth is for the people he represents.” The new levy is a reworking of the Urban Fire Levy which rural residents who lived more than 15 minutes away from a fire station never previously paid.

Barra season closes Fishers are reminded that barramundi will be off limits in Queensland east coast waters from until February 1, 2014. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district officer Coby Walker said the closure was in place to protect barramundi stock during their spawning season when they are most vulnerable. “The closed season allows stocks to replenish to ensure there are healthy fish populations for current and future generations of Queensland fishers,” he said. “A barramundi closure also currently applies for the Gulf of Carpentaria until 1 February 2014.” Mr Walker said barramundi fishing is still permitted in some lakes and dams across the State. “Fishers can hook a barra during the closed season by fishing at a Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) dam,” he said. “Barramundi can still be taken from Tinaroo Falls Dam with size (minimum 58 centimentre) and possession (one fish) limits still in effect. Environment grants open DAVID Kempton, Member for Cook, is calling on eligible individuals and groups in Cook to apply for the State Government’s Everyone’s Environment grants program. Mr Kempton said $12 million was up for grabs as part of the community-focused program, aimed at assisting with activities that tackle environmental degradation and restoration works to conserve Queensland’s cultural heritage. “The heritage phase is to support community groups and heritage owners to undertake projects that ensure the conservation and interpretation, access and community engagement with Queensland’s heritage-listed places (state and locally listed) as well as historic shipwrecks,” he said. “It provides two streams of funding, with $2000 to $10,000 available on the smaller scale and $10,000 to $40,000 for larger scale projects. “This money will be distributed to those people running projects that actively seek to

Top teacher Atherton State High School teacher David Platz has been awarded a National Excellence in Teaching Award (NEiTA). A mathematics and physics teacher for 14 years, Mr Platz has spent 10 years developing an online astronomy and astrophysics course which has been recognised by the Queensland Studies Authority. Using a $30,000 Spotlight on Science grant, Mr Platz developed the course as a way of finding new ways to teach maths and science. “Astronomy and astrophysics are rich in mathematics and all the wonderful sciences but are also their own unique fields,” he said. Now in their 20th year, the NEiTAs are Australia’s only national independent teaching awards that are voted for by parents, school boards and councils, parent associations, committees of management, secondary school councils and community organisations. This year 60 teachers were recognised with 17 coming from Queensland. “I am very proud of all Queensland’s hardworking and inspiring teachers and these awards reward their efforts,” Queensland Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said. “Teachers play a critical role in the lives of Queensland children by giving them the knowledge and skills needed to achieve success in their futures, and it’s important to acknowledge the positive difference they make to our lives.”

Camp kids reunite A ‘Camp Kids’ reunion was held at Kerribee Park on October 26 and 27 with more than 60 people attending. Camp Kids is the name for a generation of youngsters who grew up in satellite towns across the Tableland during the construction of the Mareeba-Dimbulah channel system. The reunion kicked off at 1pm with a barbeque held in the early evening. Most stayed overnight and had breakfast in the morning before heading home.

Geese to blame for power outage This flock of magpie geese knocked out power to parts of Atherton and Malanda when some of its members flew into powerlines By Boyd Robertson The dastardly culprits behind power outages in Atherton and Malanda on October 28 have been revealed as a flock of devious magpie geese. Power routed through an Ergon feeder station in East Barron was cut in two separate incidents at about 7:30am and 9:30am, leaving 1079 customers in parts of Atherton and the outskirts of Malanda without juice. Ergon dispatched three teams to patrol the area and made a gruesome discovery – the bodies of two geese, electrocuted by flying into the powerlines. Although power was restored within 20 minutes in both cases, Ergon’s challenge is now to prevent this from happening again, as the birds appear to have settled down at the site for the time being. Ergon corporate communications manager Mark Timmerman said that the company was tinkering with its equipment to stop future geese-related outages. “We are currently doing some network adjustments to ensure circuit breaker equipment at our Atherton substa-

tion is operating in such a way to alleviate future issues,” he said. “We’re also considering things like changing the angles of the support arms or placing spacers between the lines to prevent future clashes. “There should be no impact to customers’ power while this work is done.” Mr Timmerman also warned that bird impacts can cause powerlines to fall by creating superheated electricity arcs which melt through the wires. Downed powerlines can transmit electricity into the ground and be deadly from some distance away so anyone that sees one is advised to contact either the police or Ergon for repair. Local bird expert Alan Gillanders said magpie geese, although nomadic, will settle in swamps and ponds ahead of the wet season. “If they find a good spot, they will stay for some time,” he said. “They want to roost in a swamp – they will stay until the rains come and then disperse for breeding. “This type of geese can form flocks of tens of thousands.”

Novelist’s book based on home turf By Boyd Robertson

Life and love in Far North Queensland has given Mareeba novelist Mandy Magro plenty of real-world inspiration for her forays into the world of rural romance. A self-described “country girl through and through”, Mandy has seen a lot of the Far North, working out on stations as a cook, behind the chutes at rodeos and farming fruit at Mareeba. Setting her steamy novels – which invariably revolve around star-crossed lovers with troubled pasts – on her home turf not only gives her a familiar environment to ground her stories in but also allows her to take advantage of the area’s diversity, including rural farms, lush rainforest, the glittering coast and the Great Barrier Reef. Her first novel, runaway success Rosalee Station, contained many elements of her own life and launched her into a novelist career. Her new novel Driftwood, released on November 1, however, marks her first foray into the past, alternatively following the exploits of a bushranger and his lover in 1861 New South Wales and the adventures of a young woman and a modern cowboy in 2012 Far North Queensland. Mandy says she researched the historical setting of gold-rush era New South Wales ex-

Mareeba author Mandy Magro

tensively. “This is my first one with historical threads to it – I’m not a big history buff but the bushranger stuff has always appealed to me,” she said. “I learned about how they spoke, what they wore, what they ate.” Australian rural romance isn’t anything new, with Mandy being inspired by writers like Fiona Palmer, Tony Park and Rachel Treasure, but she sees a blossoming of the genre coming with renewed interest in the more erotic side of things thanks to the success of Fifty Shades of Grey. “I think the desire for (rural romance) has always been around – look at TV shows like McLeod’s Daughters and The Farmer Wants a Wife – but I think that demand is going up,” she said. “Not all of my readers are rural women like you’d expect – a lot of them are urban and read the books because it gets them out of the city and there’s also a lot of men reading because they like the country aspects. “I am hoping to write an erotic rural novel at some point – probably not as full on with the whips and chains as Fifty Shades but definitely getting a lot steamier.” The Express will be giving away six copies of Driftwood through a competition on our Facebook page. Head online to check it out.

Community CELEBRATIONS

Rotary student leadership dinner Mareeba Rotary hosted the 2013 student leadership dinner at the Mareeba RSL on Wednesday, October 23. The night was held to recognise and meet the school leaders from the district and to share with everyone what Interact and Early Act does. Interact and Early Act clubs are primary and secondary school based service clubs sponsored and supported by Rotary and they raise money to give to worthy causes locally, as well as International causes such as schools in East Timor. The night was also an opportunity for Interact club members to lead and run a Mareeba Rotary Meeting.

Why on Earth would you take your child to a Chiropractor? Chiropractic is one of the fastest growing health professions in the world, with over 250,000 Australians visiting a chiropractor every week. A large number of these visits are also children. How is it that someone so young can develop a spinal problem? The most common reason is trauma. A child’s development involves 3 formidable challenges to their musculoskeletal system. 1. Birth: The passage through the birth canal is one of the most dangerous trips a person takes in their lifetime. Only a hundred years ago, the birthing process was feared because the risk of death to the child and mother was much higher then it is today. Abnormal birth positions such as breach or coming out feet first greatly increase the risk of complications. If the risk is too high, often a cesarean section may need to be performed. These situations can place an abnormal degree of stress on the delicate structures of the neck and skull leading to injury and dysfunction 2. Learning to walk: Transitioning from crawling to standing on two legs is quite the feat. Maintaining an upright spine and learning how to walk involves many months of tripping, falling and completely changing the way the spine handles gravity 3. New Technology: The most recent addition is the increased use of tablets/smart phones and the subsequent sedentary lifestyle. The constant looking

down and hunching of shoulders significantly increases the risk of postural deformities developing that often lead to headaches and spinal pain. The ‘sloth like’ behaviour associated with computers puts the child at risk of developing obesity. At the current rate, 65% of young Australians will be overweight or obese by 2020 A chiropractor is well positioned to both assess and manage the aforementioned challenges. Chiropractors go to university for a minimum of 5 years to learn how to improve the health and function of the body. There are mandatory courses that focus on how to assess and care for children. Many chiropractors also undertake postgraduate study specialising in infant care. Chiropractic care provided to children is not a ‘scaled down’ version of what is often used with adults. Chiropractors have specific techniques to look after infants that often involve forces no greater then testing the ripeness of an avocado or tomato. There is a massive difference between looking after the spine of a truck driver who has been loading cattle for 40 years and that of a 4-month old baby. If you have concerns about the health of your child and how well they are functionally developing, contact your local chiropractors. Small issues addressed now can help prevent major problems in the future.

WHEELWRIGHTS

In the months & years after John Atherton & his family settled in Mareeba in 1877, many businesses, out of necessity, would have been established here. Two of those would have been a Wheelwright, & a Blacksmith. Often these trades overlapped. Horses & drays were the only manner of transport & these businesses would have been in great demand. At the Museum outside the Blacksmith’s shop we have an item of great interest: a large circular plate of metal with a hole in the middle! This was an essential item to the Wheelwright in the replacing of the iron band on the wheel of a dray. The hub of the wheel would be placed in the hole allowing the wheel to be repaired to sit on the metal plate. The superheated iron band would then be placed over the wheel & water poured over to shrink the band around the wheel. We have obtained a video of this process. This can be viewed at any time in the Blacksmith’s shop at the Museum. Christmas is fast approaching & we are turning our minds to gift giving. You could do no better for absent friends than to send them a copy of “Smoke & Mirrors”; the story of the Mareeba Dimbulah Tobacco Industry written by Dr Marjorie Gilmore & Mr Bob Veness. The books are available at the Information Centre. The Centre’s shop is also full of interesting items & goodies suitable for gifts. If you are a member of the Mareeba Information & Heritage Centre you are entitled to a discount in the shop. Happy shopping & we look forward to showing you around the Museum.

Top British player to coach Roosters seniors By Ryan Groube

THE Atherton Roosters are hopeful a Pommie invasion will help lift the club off the bottom of the Cairns and District Rugby League ladder in 2014. Last week, the club unveiled former Great Britain and Wales international Karle Hammond as their senior coach for 2014. The Roosters playing ranks have also been bolstered with the signing of Jamie Thackray, a prop forward who has been plying his trade with Limoux Grizzlies in France’s Elite One Championship. Discussions are also underway to sign Super League centre Dean McGilvary as well as promising young fullback Richard Lepori who plays in the second-tier competition in England. Scottish international Brett Carter, who was a try scorer in Scotland’s shock 26-24 win over Tonga at the Rugby League World Cup, is also in the Roosters sights. Roosters’ president Rodney Cumming said the club felt that a handful of new players were needed to reinvigorate the clubs playing roster. “I’ve always believed that in this competition you need to have your few imports if you want to be successful,” he said. “We have seen in the past that clubs can go from the shithouse to the penthouse in a year and while our first step will be to try and get off the bottom [of the ladder] I’d like to see us back in the top five.” Hammond, who comes to the club with a ringing en-

dorsement from Northern Pride coach Jason Demetriou, said he was looking forward to the challenge of restoring the Roosters as a CDRL powerhouse. “I don’t care what has happened in the past, my focus is on 2014,” Hammond told The Express. Having spent the past six years Shellharbour on the South Coast of New South Wales, Hammond, his wife and four children began the 2700 kilometre drive to Atherton on Monday. Hammond hopes to get the Roosters together for some informal training sessions in November in a bid to get to know his charges and to revive players’ enjoyment of the game. “We won’t be doing three kilometre time trials or anything, we’ll just organise a couple of games of touch footy so I can meet the guys and the guys can meet me,” he said. He said he would not hesitate on promoting players from lower grades into the senior side and that he would not tolerate players missing training. “I want our players training and that will be one of the key things that I base my team selections on,” he said. “If a brilliant player isn’t turning up and an okay player keeps showing up it will be the one who shows up that will be selected every time. “All I want is a playing roster that turns up with a smile on their face ready to train.” The Mareeba Gladiators are still looking for an A Grade, A Reserve and Under 18s coach for 2014.

A letter to the people of Mareeba Shire... I would first like to establish my credentials as a business person and rate payer of Mareeba Shire. I have established and run my own business in Mareeba for 25 years and in that time I served 12 years in a community service club, eight years as coordinator of two major events with a combined attendance of over 15,000 people per year. I spent three years as president of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and four years as a shire Councillor. It is because of this I have taken a close interest in the de-amalgamation process from the beginning, both verbally and financially, although I was not part of the Mareeba concerned citizens or the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, who both fort long and hard to bring about the referendum to de-amalgamate from the Tablelands Regional Council. I attended a meeting held at the Mareeba International Club called by Mr Rod Ferguson (Transfer Manager), to inform the rate payers on the process of de-amalgamating the Mareeba Shire from the Tablelands Regional Council. His comments have since been printed in papers for all to read. One of the questions asked of Mr. Ferguson was ‘Would the Mareeba Shire be viable after de amalgamation’ and his answer was ‘YES WITH CAREFUL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING’, the opposite to what we were told by the TRC and Queensland treasury during the de-amalgamation meetings. It is with frustration that I now see the former Mayor of the TRC, Tom Gilmore and current TRC Councillor Jenny Jensen, and some others of his team putting their hands up for election to the position of Mayor and councillors of our shire. The same people publicly denigrated those that stood up and lobbied the State Government to give us our democratic rite to have a say in our future. With letters to the editor and tweets on the

TRC website against the ratepayers of the Mareeba Shire having the opportunity to have our shire back. How can we as ratepayers trust these people who jump from one side of the fence to the other? After all isn’t this part of the reason that we won’t our own Shire back. Weren’t some of these people part of the inefficient amalgamation process that we have fought hard to get out of?. I find it extremely hypercritical that these people now want to represent us and our Shire after wanting nothing to do with the process to get us to this election. Maybe they hope to be elected and send the shire broke and then walk away with their hands in the air saying ‘But we told you it wouldn’t work’. As ratepayers we don’t have to be too smart to know that finances will be tight for at least the next two years. They will be the most critical two years for the future on the new Mareeba Shire. Actions speak louder than words and we would not be having this election if it wasn’t for the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and the concerned citizens of the Mareeba Shire who lobbied the state government to have a referendum. While others lobbied in the background to have it stopped. I am very parochial when it comes to the Mareeba Shire and don’t want to see its future potential jeopardised by people with self interests. I won’t to reiterate that my frustrations are not aimed at all the candidates that are standing only those that came out against deamalgamation and now want us to believe that they have our best interests at hart. Please choose carefully on the 9th of November. True we need progress and development, but most of all we need to pay our bills and be financially viable and the rest will follow. The LAND Mackay Sugar profits are up Mackay Sugar has announced a $16.3 million profit for the year ending May 2013, at its Annual General Meeting last week. The financial result marks a $28.8 million improvement on the $12.5 million loss recorded in the 2012 financial year. Mackay Sugar Chairman Andrew Cappello discussed the major milestones achieved in the reporting period and said the year under review was a year of progress, after having experienced poor results over the previous two seasons, due to wet weather. “We delivered a number of exceptional outcomes in the reporting period, including the acquisition of Mossman Mill in June 2012, the completion of our Racecourse Cogeneration Plant in September 2012 – our first large scale renewable energy plant, and carried out a major boiler upgrade at our Marian Mill,” he said. Mackay Sugar handled a crop of 5.6 million tonnes and 508,867 tonnes in Mackay and Mossman respectively in the 2012 season (2011 season: 4.2 million tonnes; 411,012t) and produced more than 820,000 tonnes of raw sugar in Mackay and 63,500 tonnes in Mossman. Mackay Sugar Chief Executive Officer Quinton Hildebrand provided shareholders with an account of the operational performance for the current season and the strategies aimed at improving results for the Company in the years ahead.

The brigade is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month By Ryan Groube AN honour board bearing the names of all past and present members of the Julatten Rural Fire Brigade (JRFB), will be unveiled on November 30 – as part of the brigade’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The 2.4 metre long, 1.3 metre high board will include the names of about 200 volunteers, including the year they joined the JRFB, and will hang above the meeting room in the brigade’s shed. JRFB first officer Wally Gray joined the brigade in 1981 and said it was important to remember those people who donated their time to protect their community.

“We are doing this mainly in recognition of the work people did 50 years ago to get our brigade going,” he said. “People who volunteer with rural fire brigades don’t get paid but we front up as part of our commitment to our community. We don’t go out and fight fires for glory we go out for the good of the community.” The JRFB has come a long way since it was first formed (as the Julatten Bush Fire Brigade) on November 4, 1963. At the first meeting, the brigade had enough money to buy four knapsack sprays, a first aid kit and 12 beaters – long sticks with a leather head used to extinguish fires. A modified Land Rover was the brigade’s

first fire engine and the relocated Geraghty Park hall became the brigades first “home” in 1984. As the township grew the hall was no longer suitable to house the brigade and in 2000 a new shed was built at the northern end of Geraghty Park where the brigade remains to this day. Today, the JRFB has 36 members and two medium attack units, one with an 800 litre tank and one with a 1000 litre tank. Mr Gray said the brigade was well established due to the hard work of volunteers that had come before. Celebrations for the 50th anniversary will kick off at the shed at 4pm on November 30 and go “until everyone goes home”.

Cadets looking for members By Boyd Robertson Confidence, discipline, self-reliance and camaraderie are on offer at the 106 Australian Air Force Cadets (Tablelands) Squadron, which has begun a recruitment drive leading up to its passing-out parade on November 24. Anyone between the ages of 13 and 20 is welcome to join up for a cadetship, which includes a wide variety of training and activities and training in skills like orienteering, fieldcraft, weapons safety and teamwork. Regular lecture sessions on Friday nights at the squadron’s Abbott Street facility, teach cadets tactics, aircraft recognition and service history. Cadets also take part in drill competitions and appear at military events like the dedication of the Avenue of Honour and ANZAC Day marches. Flight Lieutenant Stephen Fowler said the 106th Squadron, which makes up part of one of the Cadet’s eight national Wings, is looking to recruit at least eight new cadets to replace those graduating this year, and hopefully add “another ten or fifteen” to the ranks. “All these activities are designed to build a cadet’s self-reliance and confidence – these activities aren’t necessarily available in school,” Flt Lt Fowler said. “The organisation, nation-wide, is really more about personal development than it is recruiting for the defence forces.” Romney Blunt, 20, is a former 106 cadet and said her four years in the organisation had been a life-changing experience. She now works as a civilian instructor for the squadron. “I used to be really messy, my room was always a disaster,” she said. “When I first got my uniform I always had it ironed, boots polished – I took a lot of pride in it.

106 Australian Air Force Cadets Squadron (Tablelands) Cadet Corporals Jessyk Ernst, Edward Phillips, Dylan Russo and Leading Cadet Jack Bell.

“I also used to hate talking in public, but now I’m an instructor and I like to teach, so you can see how it builds confidence and discipline.” Current cadets Jessyk Ernst, from Mareeba, and Dylan Russo, from Biboohra, both said they are enjoying their tenures.

“My parents dragged me along to the first meeting,” CPPL Ernst said. “But soon I really started to like it a lot – you can do a whole bunch of things in Cadets that you can’t do anywhere else. “We go bush camping, we learn a heap of skills, I think it’s great.”

The squadron, which narrowly missed out on a first-place result at a regional drill marching competition, also has a rivalry with the 144 Army Cadets Unit based at Atherton. Flt Lt Fowler was said that 106 had a “much more varied training program” than 144 ACU.

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

There's four awesome movies at the RISING SUN CINEMA at Mareeba RSL this week – two of which should have wide appeal for anyone who appreciates a good quality film. First off is Woody Allen's new exquisite drama BLUE JASMINE, starring Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin in a human drama that will appeal to all ages. It's basically the story of a life changing experience. Then there's RUSH – a giant of a film, from acclaimed director Ron Howard, set against the background of Formula One in the 70’s and based on a true story. It stars Chris Hemsworth, as a char-

PNG. Thanks for the wonderful response. The entertainment continued throughout the afternoon with Les and his band playing many old favourites during afternoon tea. Thanks again for a lovely musical interlude to Les and the band. Zumba was a huge hit as well with many ladies getting into the swing of it along with the Lionesses. Thanks to Deb. At our last meeting we presented Cancer Council Queensland’s representative Berni McKean of Cairns with a donation of $10,000 which was raised at this function. Our social mornings are continuing to be a wonderful way to catch up with our fellow Lionesses. Everyone needs to take time to relax and “take five” and these mornings are an excellent way to do this. We always enjoy each others company and tell a few jokes and have a great time at these mornings. We meet at different venues every month. The annual Pensioners Christmas Party will be held in November on the second Tuesday of the

month at the CWA Hall. Santa is bound to be make a quick visit out of his busy schedule so we had better fine tune our voices to sing a few of his favourites Christmas Carols. This will be the last Pensioners morning for the year as the club will be in recess until February 2014. It has been our pleasure to provide this morning for all to enjoy and we look forward to seeing everyone back next year. Relay for Life will be held this year in Atherton on November 9 and 10. Our club will be there to help and we look forward to meeting all the walkers on this weekend of fun and hard work. Lionesses will be selling tickets in the Lions Club annual Christmas hampers at IGA and Coles supermarkets from now until Christmas Eve selling Christmas Raffle Please support us in our endeavour to raise much need funds for those in need. Formula 3. Here they compete viciously against each other until Lauda's superior business acumen and surgeon like precision behind the wheel propels him all the way to Formula 1; eventually landing him the number one spot at Ferrari. However it's not long before unruly golden boy James Hunt fights his way into Formula 1, and into the hearts of a nation, dramatically seizing the world championship from Lauda and proving to the critics, and more importantly himself, that there is real substance beneath his stylish exterior. Polar opposites pitted against each other in the most dangerous sport in the world, Hunt and Lauda are pushed to the breaking point of their physical and psychological endurance. CAPTAIN PHILLIPS During the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates, the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi) grows in intensity. Set on an incontrovertible collision course off the coast of Somalia, both men find themselves paying the human toll for economic forces outside of their control. (Based on a true story.) GRAVITY Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), is a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. Candlenut offers an internationally comparable Steiner programme that is fully accredited by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority as meeting all state and national academic standards. Steiner education places great importance on recognising the individual with every student at our school encouraged to realise their potential. In addition to a strong academic program in literacy, numeracy and the sciences, our students experience music by singing and learning to play an instrument. Candlenut also teaches a wide range of art and crafts, as well as organic food gardening and woodwork. For each zucchini pancake, spoon a rounded tablespoon of batter onto a hot, lightly oiled griddle or heavy skillet, spreading to form a 3-inch circle. Cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until the pancake is golden brown.

“Thrills and spills” at speedway meet By Boyd Robertson Mareeba Motorsport Club has wrapped up 2013’s racing with a jampacked general meet on October 3. Participation was the highest the club had seen all year, with seven racers in the Junior Grade, nine in C Grade, six in B Grade, seven in Formulas and 11 in A Grade. Herberton racer Chris Ross clinched first place in the A Grade Feature Race after a day of what he described as “fantastic good, hard, fast and clean racing.” “The car ran really well and the

competition was excellent,” Ross said. “I haven’t been down to run with the Mareeba crowd for years and years so it was really good to get down and see those fellas.” Ross took out the win at the helm of his VS Commodore, outfitted with a new V8 LSI engine. Club secretary Kerrie Vievers was delighted with the big turnout. “It’s terrific to see so many people at the track,” she said. “We’ve had five racers come to visit today, including two all the way from Townsville. “It’s probably been our biggest race

month of the year.” Ms Vievers said there had been “plenty of thrills and spills” for the year’s final meet, with a high-speed duel between Ross and Ian Wallace being a highlight. Spin-outs by Owen Jonsson and Jordan Docherty stopped racing and earned them tickets to the rear of the field, with Jonsson’s spin following on from a light collision between his car and Wallace’s. The meet was also a chance for dedicated race fans from Mareeba District FlexiSupport Association to get up close and personal with their

favourite speedway machines. The last event on the club’s calendar for 2013 is presentation night on November 23. Club members will be vying for the coveted King of Kerribee and Highest Points trophies, and will vote for each other to decide the recipients of the Sportsman of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards. The club will then take a break over the new year, with the open day of 2014 to be held on February 2. Full results: A GRADE

Mareeba boys make rep teams By Ryan Groube Junior cricketers from Mareeba have dominated selection in far northern representative teams that will travel across the State during the school holidays. In a busy rep season, 13 players from Mareeba have been selected either in Peninsula (a school competition) or Cricket Far North (a club competition) teams. In some cases players have been selected in both. Mareeba players have been

selected in the Peninsula Under 12s and 14s teams as well as the Cricket Far North Under 12s, 14s and 16s. The Peninsula Under 12s will travel to Brisbane on November 9 for a five day carnival against teams from across the state. The Under 14s play in Cairns. Throughout the course of the carnival the Peninsula teams will play a 100-over one day game each day for the five days. In addition to playing for team glory, selectors will name a

Queensland team at the conclusion of the carnivals. The Cricket Far North competition will be held from December 16 to 20 with the Under 12s playing in Tolga, the Under 14s in Mackay and the Under 16s in Brisbane. Mareeba cricket president Bomber Adams said Mareeba was experiencing a golden age with its young players. “To have 13 kids make these teams from what is just a small club is a really good effort,” he

said. “Getting selected in these teams means that our players are among the best in schoolboy and club cricket from Cardwell north. “This is the best crop [of juniors] I have seen come through for many a year.” Bomber said he was confident the Mareeba boys would more than match it with their southern counterparts and is quietly confident that “one or two of our kids will make a state side”.

MGC to take on Cairns in golf finals From Page 1 By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Golf Club (MGC)’s A Grade team is in with a chance at clinching the 2013 FNQ Golf Men’s Inter-Club Pennants after knocking the notoriously tough Half Moon Bay Golf Club team out of contention at semifinals in Mareeba on November 3. The A Grade team, composed of Michael France, captain Darrin Hastie, Steve Cadorin, Paul O’Shea, Rob Pitt, Karl Krauss, Lui Dezen and Anthony Mete, managed to beat out Half Moon Bay despite being down three players, with Dezen and Mete absent and Cadorin sidelined with injury.

France finished 4-3 up, Hastie 1 up, O’Shea 1 down, Pitt 2 up and Krauss 6-5 down. The team will face stiff opposition from Cairns Golf Club (CGC) in the finals at Atherton Golf Club on Saturday. If they succeed, it will be the first Mareeba victory in the series for over a decade. MGC found itself in an identical position last year, coming up against CGC in the 2012 Pennants finals but were defeated, with Saturday’s game a chance to avenge that loss. France said the rivalry between the two clubs was coming to a head. “Cairns doesn’t want a country club

to win this competition, and Mareeba is the only country club to make the finals,” he said. “We will give it our best on Saturday and of course we are confident of beating Cairns. “If you look at our wall, every flag reads ‘runner up, runner up’ – we’re definitely looking to change that.” Club vice-president Danny Bradley said that the team had already slain one giant in the form of Half Moon Bay, and had a good chance in the coming “David vs Goliath” battle against Cairns. “They have already beaten a team that recently won a regional final – Half Moon Bay has players like Garret

Senia, who is currently in the Queensland State Development Squad and plays in events all around Australia,” he said. “Cairns has guys like Peter Prinsloo and Pat Donaghy, who is a past FNQ Close champ – most of the guys on that team are on a 2 handicap. “But we’ve got some top-notch players in Mareeba – Mike France is a renowned ball striker, Darrin Hastie and Paul O’Shea have both come up together in the club playing off against each other and Karl is used to playing elite level sport in squash, so we do have a history of sport excellence in the team.” October 3’s Pennants semi-finals

were preceded by MGC’s closing day celebrations, with more than 70 club members and social players alike turning out for a friendly hit along the course. Prizes donated by event sponsor Far Northern Wholesalers were available on every hole, with a surprise appearance by Santa Claus. A barbecue dinner after the game saw 12 families and more than 30 children turn out for a relaxing evening. France wished to thank all the volunteers that maintained the course and ran the event. “Without them, this place would grind to a halt,” he said. “It’d look like goat track.”

Innisfail thrashed by all Bandits By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Bandits have trounced their Innisfail opponents at Kerribee Park over the weekend, with the Under 14s in particular putting in a stellar performance. The junior game reached 64 overs across two days, with Mareeba being bowled out on 400 runs halfway through. Dylan Brown scored 75 runs, Luke Lambourne 18, Lachlan Ford 69, Lester Smart 48 and Chris Adams 60. Returning to the field, Mareeba immediately dispatched their opposition on 42 overs for 69 runs. Newcomer Luke Russo bowled eight overs, taking four wickets for 21 runs. In the second innings, Matthew Crane scored 58 runs.

The senior Bandits also had an easy time dealing with Innisfail, finishing off a two-day game. Following on from the previous week’s result, in which Mareeba sat at eight wickets for 194 runs with an hour left in play, Innisfail was bowled out with two wickets for 137 runs. Brett Brewer, who took out Man of the Match with his performance, bowled for 11 overs, taking five wickets for 21 runs. Mareeba had won in the first innings and headed out into the final 20 overs for what was essentially batting practice, ending up eight wickets for 120. Pakistani import Abbas Ghulam scored 58 runs. The Under 16s side was also described as “winning easily” against Innisfail by club president Robert “Bomber” Adams.
