ramatic scenes unfolded in the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) meeting on May 1 when Mayor Rosa Lee Long ejected Councillor Marjorie Pagani from the council chamber in front of a stunned public gallery. Council also made the unprecedented move of having a police officer in the chambers during the

meeting. Cr Pagani has called her expulsion ‘unconscionable’ and has said she will make formal complaints to the Department of Local Government but the Mayor has defended her actions, claiming the councillor made offensive comments to her during the meeting. During a discussion on changes to council’s standing orders, Cr Pagani claimed that the Mayor had contradicted herself regarding the lawful

nature of non-voting resolutions in meetings. Cr Lee Long reacted immediately, saying she found Cr Pagani’s comments ‘offensive’ and ordered the councillor to make a retraction. Cr Pagani in turn demanded that the Mayor clarify exactly what she should retract, but Cr Lee Long refused to repeat the comments and moved to have the councillor suspended from the meeting. The Mayor won that decision on her casting

There were cries of outrage at Cr Lee Long’s actions from members of the 20-strong public gallery as Cr Pagani left the chamber, with calls for a vote of no confidence in the Mayor. “Members of the public, I am glad you are here to see this,” Cr Pagani said on her way out. A charity bike ride alongside the Great Wheelbarrow Race later this month will raise funds for the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation. The first group of the ‘Wheelbarrow Way Charity Ride’ will leave from the Mareeba International Club at 11:30am on May 17 and will follow in the tracks of the Wheelbarrow Race’s contestants, with riders expected to arrive in Almaden between 5 and 6 pm. The timing is designed to ensure that riders will not overtake wheelbarrow pushers and detract from the main event over the course of the 100-kilometre ride. Mareeba Friends of the Hospital has teamed up with the Mareeba Mountain Goats cycling club to make the event a reality. Friends of the Hospital president Ida Portella said the bike ride would ‘complement’ the Wheelbarrow Race instead of distract from it. “The whole idea was to support the Wheelbarrow Race, complement it and bring in a wider and different scope for it,” she said. “So we got together with the Mareeba Mountain Goats who have been really great in helping us set it up.” In addition to regular fundraising,

riders will be charged a fee to sign on to the event, with all funds raised going to Friends of the Hospital projects like a children’s playground currently under construction between two wards. Although final numbers for the ride are currently unknown, Ms Portella said the Friends of the Hospital would be satisfied with any turnout. “Since this is the first time we are running this event we don’t know exactly how many people we’ll eventually have doing it or how much money we are aiming to raise, to be honest,” she said. “Basically we will take as many riders as we can get and be happy with whatever funds we raise, then next year we will look to top that and make it bigger and better. “If we can get 50 riders just turning up to see what it’s like, that will be great – really we’ll just be happy that people are riding for the hospital.” Mountain Goats secretary Megan Harris said the club was happy to provide cycling expertise for the event. “We are primarily a mountain biking club but we are happy to get involved and promote cycling in any form,” she said. “I think it’ll be a great ride.” Riders can sign up by emailing mareebamountaingoats@gmail.com.

up to when the starting gun sounds. “Having Benny Hampton come back to his hometown and donate such a valuable piece of NRL memorabilia is a really touching gesture and it’s been a big boost to the night.” The Great Wheelbarrow Race runs from May 16 to May 18 and has become one of the Tableland’s biggest community fundraising events, winning a national tourism award for the region. Participants push a wheelbarrow either individually, as a duo, or in teams over 140 kilometres from Mareeba to Chillagoe, in imitation of the region’s earliest pioneers. Racers battle heat stress and exhaustion to complete the course. The race is designed as a blanket charity event, with teams allowed to choose their own causes to raise funds for. The 10th anniversary of the race last year saw dozens of teams turn out to raise almost half a million dollars for various charities (more than all previous races combined) and attracted significant media coverage. This year will mark the biggest race yet with a record 73 having already nominated for this year’s race.

With only a two weeks remaining until the 2014 Great Wheelbarrow Race, teams are putting in the final push to raise funds for their chosen charity. On May 3, the Indiestructables team held their Charity Pink Night for toddler Indie-Rose Taurima at Mareeba RSL. The well-known team has been fundraising all year with a cake stall, cupcake day, wine drive, merchandise sales of hats, coolers and nearly 1500 armbands that have been sold nation-wide plus heaps more. The Charity Pink night raised just over $10,000 with homegrown NRL star Ben Hampton making a surprise appearance to donate and auction off a fully signed 2014 Melbourne Storm jersey. Last year the Indiestructables were the highest fundraisers ever for the Great Wheelbarrow Race, raising over $115,000 for medical and living expenses for little Indie Rose and her family. Indiestructables spokesperson Tim Ralph said the night had been a great success, with Hampton’s visit an added bonus. “It’s been really great to see the local community and actually people all across the country get behind Indie and chip in,” Mr Ralph said. “We’re looking forward to breaking the fundraising record we set last year and we’ll keep going right

Pagani, immediately denounced the Mayor’s actions. “You should be ashamed of yourself, Madam Mayor,” she said. “Your behaviour is disgusting.” After Cr Pagani’s departure, a police officer entered the chamber and remained for the rest of the meeting. The Express understands this officer was there at the request of Cr Hodge in case members of the public became disorderly. Cr Lee Long and Cr Pagani have clashed frequently since de-amalgamation, with the councillor criticising the Mayor time and again for perceived abuse of her powers and Cr Lee Long threatening to discipline Cr Pagani over her disruptive behaviour in meetings. Speaking to The Express, Cr Lee Long again would not repeat exactly what she found offensive about Cr Pagani’s comments but said she was well within her rights as Mayor to expel the councillor from the meeting. “In my opinion she was about to launch into yet another personal attack on me,” Cr Lee Long said. “I took offence to the words she said, all she had to do was retract them – she defied me in a very forceful manner, so I had no alternative but to move a suspension motion. “I’ve been very lenient on her in the past, I believe, and now it is time to get some order into council meetings.” Under council’s standing orders, the Chair of meetings can order councillors ‘who in the Chair’s opinion have committed

an act of disorder’ to retract statements and can move to have them suspended from the meeting if they refuse. ‘Acts of disorder’ under the standing orders include using indecent or offensive language. Cr Pagani said that the Mayor had no grounds to remove her from the meeting. “She ordered me to retract, without specifying what I had to retract,” Cr Pagani said. “I can’t for the life of me think of what she would have found offensive about what

I said. For Stocker and Hodge to go with her and vote me out is dishonest and unconscionable.” Cr Pagani added she had begun a formal process of complaint to Queensland Department of Local Government director-general Craig Evans about the Mayor’s conduct. It appears Cr Lee Long came to the meeting fully prepared to expel Cr Pagani – the Mayor had on hand a printout of council’s standing orders, with sections regarding procedures to suspend a councillor highlighted.

Vacant block not sold at auction By Boyd Robertson Potential buyers for a large vacant block of prime Mareeba real estate will now have to negotiate with the state government after the property failed to meet reserve price at auction on May 1. The final bid for 157 Haren Street, a 6-hectare block at the Kennedy Highway turnoff, passed in at $535,000. The property’s reserve was not disclosed by the government. Interested parties will now have to make a deal with the Department of Education, which has owned the land for several years. The auction was held in Mareeba RSL’s beer garden by Mareeba Property Office (MPO) and attended by about 30 bidders, with Cairns-based auctioneer Des Ed-

monds presiding. Bidding started slowly at $180,000 and climbed haltingly with repeated pauses as agents conferred with the sellers. The site’s large size and prime location on the entranceway to Mareeba from Cairns made it a tantalising prospect to many developers, according to MPO principal John Falvo. Mr Falvo said the final bid at the auction matched his agency’s original valuation of the property, with the failure of sale as a result of government expectations of price not meeting reality.

Butterfly wings shelter opened By Ryan Groube Butterfly wings will shelter Kuranda tourists from the far north’s fierce summer storms. On May 1, Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore officially opened the $479,000 Kuranda Pedestrian Pods Project at the southern end of Coondoo Street. The project includes seven covered shelters linking the footpath from Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Rail to the entrance of Kuranda’s tourism strip. The roof of the pods features a large vinyl film – essentially a ‘large sticker’ – of the wings of the far north’s iconic butterflies including the Birdwing and Ulysses. Originally, the project was designed as a covered walkway.

Cr Gilmore said the covered walkway would have shut tourists away from the natural environment which he said was Kuranda’s biggest draw. “After some consideration we decided to break it up because of the effect the covered walkway would have had on closing up the rainforest vista,” he said. “[With these pods] we have provided a place for people to seek refuge from the elements without taking away the value of the rainforest experience.” Tourism Kuranda chair Melanie Wicks said the end product was “function and form at its best”. Kuranda Chamber of Commerce president Rob Matthews said aside from the functional elements of the pods the upgrade provided a boost to

the look of the town. “We have more than 800,000 tourists come through here every year so it is very important that the place looks good,” he said. The pods were built by Shane Smith Builders and designed by Fisher Buttrose Architects. Cairns photographer Mark Hopkinson provided images from his personal collection for the butterfly wings that grace the roof of the pods. Funding for the project came from the Kuranda Infrastructure Levy collected by Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Railway. Money collected from the levy is put into a reserve to improve infrastructure in Kuranda and is managed by the Kuranda Infrastructure Advisory Committee.

12 girls formally entering society By Boyd Robertson Poise, grace and elegance were in vogue when twelve young women formally entered Mareeba’s social world at the Debutante Ball on May 3. Held in Mareeba International Club’s ballroom, the event saw the debutantes – a mixture of girls over the age of 16 from Mareeba State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College – presented to society at

large. For the girls it was a culmination of 12 weeks of training in dancing, dinner etiquette, floral arrangement, hair dressing and cosmetics. They put themselves and their partners through 13 different dances ranging from formal classics and fun new progressive numbers. In attendance were Reverend Father Frank Gordon, vicar-general of the Catholic Diocese of Cairns, Member for Cook David Kempton

Lisa-Maree Toohey & Tate Martin from Mareeba State High School.

and Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore in addition to 230 other guests. Debutante Ball co-ordinator Daniela Soncin said the event had gone flawlessly and the debutantes were ‘a credit to their schools and families’. “It was a very successful ball, the debutants danced beautifully and presented well,” she said. “They have put in a lot of effort in the lead-up to the ball and it shows.” Debutante balls are a tradition dating back to medieval Europe, where they were used to signal that the young women presented in them were now eligible for marriage. Ms Soncin said although the concept of the debutante ball had evolved with modern social trends, the traditions behind it still remained strong. “The ball is something of a rite of passage for the girls,” she said. “It’s a unique event because it’s formal the whole way through – we don’t take off our shoes and start doing the chicken dance late in the night. “In preparation for the ball the girls gain valuable experience in attending and speaking in formal society with elegance.” The preparation process for next year’s Mareeba Debutante Ball will begin in January 2015 when the committee meets with parents and puts out a call for expressions of interest among Years 11 and 12 of the local schools.

Bowel cancer tests that might save your life DiD you know one person dies of bowel cancer every two hours? Bowel cancer is a major problem in Australia. Apart from skin cancer, it is the most common cancer affecting both men and women, and there are about 10,600 new people diagnosed with bowel cancer every year. It is becoming more common, especially in men. In 20 years the Annual Rotary Bowelscan programme has detected 42 bowel cancers and over 100 precancerous polyps in North Queensland and the Northern Territory. Rotary Bowelscan is a community service programme run by Rotarians throughout Australia and has saved thousands of lives in the past 20 years. One in 19 men and one in 24 women will develop bowel cancer with the incidence increasing sharply after the

age of 50. Bowelscan kits are only $7.00 and are available in Mareeba at Priceline Pharmacy on Byrnes Street and Mareeba Discount Drug Store in the Coles centre complex. Participants are able to carry out the test in the comfort and privacy of their own home over three consecutive days. If the test shows positive, you will be referred to your nominated doctor for further investigation. It is recommended all persons over the age of 40 years participate in the Rotary Bowelscan programme each year. Long term statistical records show that early detection of bowel cancer or a polyp can usually be treated successfully. All Rotary Bowelscan kits must be returned to the Mareeba pharmacies by Saturday May 31.

EARLY SETTLERS

One of our most interesting & informative displays at The Heritage Centre is that of the Early Settlers. The settler’s homes were very basic; poles from trees, iron sheeting, hessian bags, bark, & dirt floors. Some homes were a little more sophisticated with ant-bed floors; this was crushed ant-bed mixed to slurry with a little water. This mixture set like cement. The housewife saved moistened tea leaves and sprinkled them on the floor, then lightly swept them up. This eliminated quite a bit of dust from the floor. Shelves decorated with fancily cut paper, the hanging Bush Pantry and the heavy & cumbersome irons heating on the wood stove are all here to see.

The display features quite a number of items from yesteryear which fascinate the children on school tours. These include an original ice box which one student thought might be an old fashioned microwave. Others were amazed with the old Record Player. After listening, with big eyes & mouth agape to a recording of “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic”, one young fellow said “how do you change the channel?” and of course, the “Gazunda” (the under the bed potty), invokes many & varied responses, like UGH! or GROSS!; but one young brash boy said “COOL”. I then said “OK, so you’ll not mind emptying & washing it in the morning?” Master Brash stepped backwards and said “What me? No way!”

Lions and Lioness supported the ANZAC day celebrations again this year joining in the parade, presenting books to the high schools and town library, and providing ANZAC biscuits and water to those in attendance. Lions Australia has been supporting childhood cancer research at least as far back as 1976. Since that time childhood cancer survival rates have improved to about 75% but unfortunately every year in Australia more than 600 children are still diagnosed with cancer and three Australian children die from cancer every week. Among childhood illnesses, cancer remains the most common cause of death in Australia. Since 1996, Lions Australia has shown outstanding commitment contributing over $4.5 million to childhood cancer research. This effort has resulted in, amongst other things, a safer and more effective blood stem cell transplantation for leukaemia patients following chemotherapy which can lead to shorter hospitalisation and more rapid recovery. Lions have done a lot but the job is not over because we believe every child has the right to a healthy life. At the 57th national convention in Melbourne in May 2009, Lions established a Project to be known as Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation (ALCCRF). The Mareeba Lions Club will be holding its second Family Fun Metrogaine from the Heritage Centre on the 15th June to raise money for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. Please come along and support this worthwhile cause. Mareeba Lions continue to collect your used eye glasses in the Lions Recycle for Sight programme. Shape the budget

Member for Cook David Kempton has urged locals to help shape the looming State Budget by participating in the ‘Strong Choices’ campaign. An online survey, available at http://www. strongchoices.qld.gov.au/, allows people to decide where government should allocate money in its budget. Throughout the survey, respondents are asked to make spending cuts to reduce the State’s $80 billion debt to a ‘sustainable’ level of between $50-$55 billion. Savings accrued through raising taxes, selling public assets and/or reduce services automatically update a bar showing the State’s debt level.

The campaign has attracted more than 130,000 unique website visits and almost 29,000 completed submissions. Mr Kempton said the online tool allows residents unprecedented access to the budget process. “This interactive tool, an Australian-first, makes the Budget accessible and gives people a real understanding of the issues facing our state, highlighting exactly how our current $4 billion a year interest bill could be put to better use,” he said. Mr Kempton urged his constituents to make a submission and design their own debt reduction strategy. “The Government will take into account submissions when formulating a Draft Strong Choices Plan to be tabled in Queensland Parliament at the next State Budget, on June 3, 2014.” Queensland residents have until May 19 to make a submission.

Herberton to host youth week

A free Youth Week event will be held on May 10 from 4pm until 9pm at the Herberton tennis courts. The event was originally scheduled for April 11 but was cancelled due to the threat of Cyclone Ita. The alcohol free event will showcase the work of young people who have reinvigorated the courts as a ‘youth space’. Artistic works and the upgrades of the facility, conducted by youngsters from Steppin Up and Creative Arts for Everyone, will be on display. Free food, drinks and activities will be provided.

Keeping Carnivale afloat

Port Douglas Carnivale will be celebrated in traditional fashion in 2014 with registrations now open for floats for the 10-day festival’s signature event – The Macrossan Street Parade on May 16.

ESTABLISHED 1972

Now in its 20th year, general manager Roy Weavers said they had kept the theme as Carnivale. “It is only fitting that the theme for the parade is Carnivale. We are excited to see what community groups and businesses will do with this,” he said. Mr Weavers said revellers could expect a lot of changes to the parade this year with organisers for the first time installing lights as well as a PA system along Macrossan and Wharf streets. The action will also kick off 30 minutes earlier this year at 6.30pm and road closures will be in place. One of the highlights of this year’s annual Street Parade will be the street theatre, with crowds to be entertained by mono cycles, juggling acts, and magicians. The Market Park Funfair, which is a family favourite, will also run across both Friday and Saturday. “There is going to be lots of surprises at this year’s parade. It will set the tone for the festival and the opening weekend, which has a number of great family activities including the Four Mile Beach Day on Saturday and the Backyard Games on Sunday,” he said. Registration forms can be found on the Carnivale website by clicking on “get involved”. Entries close May 8.

Prisoners help Cooktown clean up

Extra manpower will help clean-up following Tropical Cyclone Ita, with a contingent of low security prisoners to begin work at the Cooktown Racecourse today. Community Recovery and Resilience Minister David Crisafulli said the racecourse hadn’t been spared with the roof torn off the toilet block, track railings down and trees strewn across the track. “The racecourse is part of the heart and soul of Cooktown and the Cape hosting the annual show in August, the picnic races in November and many other local events throughout the year,” he said.

“The show must go on and this extra manpower will ensure Cooktown’s important social events continue as planned. “They will also take pressure off the dedicated Cook Shire Council staff who have been working around the clock to clear debris from the town’s parks and gardens since TC Ita struck earlier this month. “Instead the Council will be able to concentrate on helping local residents and businesses get back on their feet.” The contingent of ten prisoners from the Lotus Glenn Correctional Centre has been transferred from the Innisfail prison camp. Their work includes recognised skills and equipment training that is fully accredited. Mr Crisafulli said the prisoners would be closely supervised during their stay and will only be used to restore public areas and facilities.

Council kicks goal for League

THE North’s best footballers will be strutting their stuff in Atherton this year, thanks to $10,000 in funding from the Tablelands Regional Council. Council has voted to bring forward to this year a funding commitment that would have originally seen the Northern Pride take to the field in Atherton in 2015, following a request from the Atherton Roosters Football Club. Originally, in early 2013, Council had voted to approve $20,000 to bring a Northern Pride game to Mareeba in this financial year¬, and to Atherton in 2014/15. However a request from the Roosters has been made to Council to provide that funding early, to allow the Northern Pride to play in Atherton in June. The vote to approve the change also stated that the funding was in lieu of that set aside for 2014/15. “This region is a heartland for rugby league,” Mayor Rosa Lee Long said later. “We have local talent at the highest levels of the NRL, and the Northern Pride are always strong performers at a State level.

More than $1.5 million in community contributions Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank® branches have recently celebrated $1.5 million in contributions to the local community, since it was established eight years ago. The most recent annual sponsorship and grant round saw more than $200,000 distributed to nearly 50 not-for-profit groups and associations like the Mareeba Swimming Club. Community Bank® Chair, Gilbert Teitzel said the branches are committed to supporting a thriving Mareeba and Dimbulah community into the future. “Reaching the $1.5 million mark is such a fantastic achievement for a community enterprise that boasts more than 500 local shareholders who all invested back in 2005,” Mr Teitzel said. The Community Bank® model is such an asset for rural towns, as investment decisions are made at the local level by individuals that live and work in the communities. These Directors and branch staff have a grassroots understanding of the needs of the community and this determines where investment and funding is received.

Sponsorships and Grants.

Scholarships.

A new annual sponsorship and grant round attracted over 50 submissions from Mareeba and Dimbulah. The applications came from sporting clubs, festivals, local schools, industry groups and art associations.

Your local Community Bank® branches provide $10,000 per year to support two local students with their university studies. Sarah Bensted was the successful applicant for 2014 and is studying law while Chris Bozzo began his scholarship in 2013 and is studying veterinary science.

Community events like The Great Wheelbarrow Race and Karumba Bike Ride will receive funding, while an International Women’s Day forum and the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce have been supported. Clubs such as the Mareeba Mountain Goats and Tinaroo Canoe Club have been assisted again this year to run their unique and nationally recognised mountain biking and canoe race events which promote our region far and wide. The outcomes from the sponsorship program will be wide reaching to the many Not for Profit groups run by dedicated volunteers. The Community Bank values the work these individuals do in our community and we are very proud to be able to support their great initiatives.

The scholarship program showed Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank® branches Company’s ongoing commitment to supporting local youth and building stronger communities. The young people are our future and their development is critical to this community’s success. Many students in our region have big dreams for their future careers and we’re hoping that with the right support they might be able to bring those skills back to their hometown one day.

Thanks to the support of our shareholders, branch staff, company board and customers, we have been able to grow to be one of the biggest sources of community funding in Mareeba and Dimbulah.

A global oversupply of sugar is set to come to an end with a leading industry expert tipping a price rebound as early as this season. Rabobank Brazil executive manager Andy Duff was the guest speaker at the Tableland Sugar Services annual season productivity awards night held at the Mareeba Soccer Club on April 28. The evening was held to recognise the most successful cane growers across the Tableland during the 2013 season. Mr Duff said the global commodity price had reached its lowest ebb and, depending on weather conditions, should rebound after about four years of plunging prices. For the 2013 season, prices ranged between $390 and $420 per tonnes IPS sugar. Early predictions are tipping a rise to about $420 - $460 per tonne IPS sugar for the 2014 season. The price is well below the $530 per tonne of sugar growers were getting at the height of the market in 2011. Mr Duff said years of lower prices had begun to eat into production levels but during the height of the oversupply many countries had stockpiled huge silos of product. “The worst in the cycle appears to be over and this year should show the price start to head towards the better part of the cycle if you are a producer,” he said. “The projections for the 2014-15 season is that production should just about match consumption which is the good news. “The bad news is that a lot of country have large stocks of product and those

stocks should stay pretty high in the short term.” Mr Duff said China, the biggest global importer of sugar, had “very high stocks at the moment” and won’t need to import as much as they have in previous years. He also said production numbers hadn’t dropped as much as in previous low points in the market due to alternative crops also falling in value. “While the sugar price has declined so too has the prices for alternative crops such as corn, wheat and soy bean which hasn’t provided as much of an incentive for growers to switch crops,” he said. Mr Duff, whose portfolio with Rabobank includes food and agribusiness research and advisory, said Brazil’s sugar industry was in a state of flux. Brazil exports about 26 million tonnes of sugar each year for a 50 per cent share of the world market. The country harvests about 650 million tonnes of cane annually, has 422 mills run by 200 companies and produces 40 million tonnes of sugar and 27 billion litres of ethanol each season. Mr Duff said from 2004-09 Brazil had a huge boom in the construction of new mills but the expansion of the industry had been bought to a halt by the Global Financial Crisis. Hamstringing the industry is the Brazilian Government’s control of petrol prices which has seen ethanol prices remains stagnant despite rising input and production costs. Brazil has reached its limit of domestic fuel production but rather than raising the petrol price and risk sending inflation soaring the government is importing fuel for a higher cost than it is being sold for.

Tableland Sugar Services Awards Night

Any decision based on politics rather than economics makes it difficult to predict when change will happen

– Andy Duff

MAREEBA CLEANING e! c SERVICES i v se r

Rocky Creek farming family Santina, Frank, John, baby Milan and Marie Villella were awarded Tableland Sugar Services Outstanding Canegrower award at an annual awards night at the Mareeba Soccer Club on April 28 “The margins for producing ethanol have disappeared and it has seen about 50 per cent of the mill’s business not making much money,” he said. “There is an election in October but no one is expecting an increase in gas prices between now and then which means our industry is stuck with these lower prices, and another year with no margin. “There is a lot of politics in this business and any decision based on politics rather than economics makes it difficult to predict when change will happen.” A crowd of about 100 turned out for the annual awards night which included a series of prizes in multiple categories. F, S and J Villella scooped the awards pool taking out Outstanding Canegrower, Champion Farm in the 20 to 50 hectare category, highest tonnes of cane per hectare at 160.6 and

Most Improved. The Villella family own a farm at Rocky Creek, Tolga and peanuts, potatoes and maize in addition to sugar cane. Frank Villella said diversification of crops was essential to weather market fluctuations but that he had been encouraged by Mr Duff’s speech. He said the presentation had been interesting but there was a huge risk in relying on one crop and that it was important to have a “diversity” of crops. Even with multiple crops the nature of farming was that you had to hang tough “during the good times and the bad times”. Mr Villella said taking out the evening’s top award had come as a “surprise”. The other major winner of the night was F and J Ciranni who took out the Champion

Farm 50 to 100 hectare category, highest farm CCS at 14.93 and finished runner-up in the Outstanding Canegrower award. Tableland Canegrowers had a record production year during the 2013 season with about 850, 479 tonnes crushed at the Tableland Mill. On the Tableland, 42 farms were inducted into the ‘100 club’ which recognises those that produce more than 100 tonnes of cane per hectare - up from 34 in 2012. The evening also included a presentation from John Barbetti updating growers on the Best Management Practice program. The 2014 cane season will kick off in early May with Tableland Canegrowers to send about 700,000 tonnes of cane to Mackay Sugar’s Mossman Mill.

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

There's an excellent drama with an all star cast coming to Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema this week, as well as a top notch “feel good” Aussie film. NOAH, starring Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkiins, Emma Stone and Ray Winstone, is a drama of epic proportions and is a new interpretation of the age old biblical story, with excellent cinematography. TRACKS is a sensational new Aussie movie that will appeal to a wide audience and is based on the true story of Robyn Davidson, who trekked 1700 kilometres across the vast Australian Desert in the 70's, with four camels and her dog. If you enjoyed RED DOG, you should find an affinity with this incredible story – the subject of Robyn's best selling book There's wonderful scenery, great cinematography in the out-

NOAH

In Biblical times, when God is angered by man's wickedness, Noah (Russell Crowe) has visions of a punishing apocalyptic deluge to come and takes measures to protect his family, and all the animals. Review by Louise Keller: Above the expectation of the biblical epic disaster movie, it is Darren Aronofsky's top layer of morality that allows Noah safe passage, with Russell Crowe delivering his truest performance for some time. While Ray Winstone offers the symbolic voice of temptation as Noah's nemesis Tual-cain, the main struggle between good and evil is played out in Noah's own mind as he shoulders the responsibility of the future of mankind. Faith, determination and selflessness are the film's main themes, with Noah's inner conflict evolving from decisions involving his own family that are seemingly in conflict with the Creator's greater vision. To be sure axe-yielding action and a brief specY SUNDAY M R A M 'S o D ther's Day there's DA tacle of the flood, but don't expect a run-ofT H BINGO SUNDAY 11TH TRIVIA NIG Y the-million Hollywood disaster blockbuster: M AY BR A EA $9300 M KFAST 8A TH the focus firmly rests on the psychological SATURDAY 10 RSON ALL MUMS RECE M - 10.30AM IVE E P ER P LU elements. 5 CK 2 Y DOOR PRIZE A FREE ROSE! $ , er nn t Roast Di CHILDREN $7 - • PRICE $20.00 P/P Most of the exposition concentrates on Includes Buffeinment by UN DER 3 FREE Win Mum 1 Night's Acc Enterta the dynamics in Noah's family and in particuommodation in a King ! The romance between Shem and Emma Watson's Ila, the young barren girl rescued early in the film provides one of the main story strands - including Ham's obsession to find a girl of his own. Lerman is excellent in a plum role that brings jealousy and revenge to the ship's table. Connelly offers pathos and heart to the role that reunite her with Crowe (after her Oscar-winning turn in A Beautiful Mind), while Crowe shows compassion and inner strength in a beautifully contained performance as the tormented Noah.

It's colourful, funny, full of action and even has romance . Starring Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais it is ideal light hearted entertainment for all ages.

TRACKS

In the mid 1970s, young Australian Robyn Davidson (Mia

Wasikowska) goes on a 1,700 mile trek across the deserts of Western Australia from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, with faithful dog, Diggity, after acquiring four camels - and not much encouragement. But she meets a well-connected freelance photographer, Rick Smolan (Adam Driver) who offers to introduce her to National Geographic magazine - which ends up sponsoring her trek. (Based on a true story) Review by Louise Keller: Solitude and a great sense of place is central to this gripping tale recounting Robyn Davidson's trek across the vast Australian desert in 1975, walking 1,700 miles with four camels and a dog as company. Most importantly, John Curran's film captures the essence of who is the woman they call The Camel Lady and what makes her tick. Mia Wasikowska delivers a star turn in what is a physically demanding role, effectively drawing us into her nomadic world as she shuns the repetitions and negativity of daily life within civilisation's social structures. The fact that we get to care about the Camel Lady is a testament to Wasikowska, adding emotional layers to her hero's journey of courage, determination and perseverance. Davidson wants to be alone. The earth changes from ochre to red dust to cracked, parched land to soft white sand in the course of the journey: the aerial shots especially arresting. Composer Garth Stevenson's almost monotonic score is effective by its insistent repetitiveness, constantly reinforcing the tedium of the long journey. The soundscape is good, too, the haunting tinkle from the bell around the camels' necks becomes a comforting sound. The camels Bubs, Dookie, Zeleika and baby calf Goliath are important characters, their distinctive features magnificently portrayed. They are a great part of the film's visual aspects. @ Mareeba RSL Club INFOLINE 4092 1396 While Rick Smolan (Adam Driver), the National www.mareebarslclub.com.au Geographic Magazine photographer who tags along some of the way as a means of funding the trip for TRACKS Davidson, says 'You have a problem with people,' it THURS 8th: is not people per se that are the problem. Cancer Council Queensland’s Relay For Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan discovers what inspires local teams to Relay.

One common goal at Relay

As another month passes by, we are counting down until the much anticipated Tablelands Relay For Life! Already 12 teams have registered for the annual overnight event and raised more than $18,300 for Cancer Council Queensland – and we have high hopes that number will continue to skyrocket. This year I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside and meeting the wonderful teams who have already registered and pledged to give up their weekend for a good cause. Participants continue to be an inspiration not only to myself, but to all Tableland locals who have been affected by cancer. Many of those who Relay have so many reasons to do so. Often they’ve been affected more deeply, or more often, than some of us can even imagine – but Relay For Life is the place that they can take their personal stories and know that they matter. Recently I’ve been chatting with some of our teams about why they got involved – and it seems everyone has a common goal – they are determined to give others the support they need. This is such a huge testament to our

community, and the beautiful spirit of the locals here. Lifewalkers team member Cheryl Whyte said their team from Atherton Baptist know many people in their congregation who have been affected by cancer, spurring them on to participate year after year. “We love participating in Relay For Life because we want to show our support to people in the community who have been affected. This is a way we can contribute.” Mareeba Leagues Club team member Di Barnett also said they Relay to show support. “We got involved after a young girl we knew passed away from leukaemia. We want to walk in honour of her, and support those that knew her.” When so many people come together with one goal in mind, they really are an unstoppable force. Together – we are making a vital difference! Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on September 13-14 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register visit relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

EXPRESS sPORT TABLELAND HOCKEY With the official full first round of hockey for the 2014 played on the weekend there was plenty of excitement and thrills with every indication that the season is shaping up to be action packed one. The U6’s and 8’s commenced their games at 10am focusing on both skills development and playing positions. Supported by an enthusiastic group of parents and volunteers they practised their skills with a modified game of hockey. The U10 teams of All Stars, Raiders and Sharks played a hard fought round robin competition over an hour where all teams showed early skills and competiveness. Trent Delai and Jhai Mehnet both scored for the All Stars with great defence from the opposing teams. As the season progresses it is anticipated that competition between these three teams will be hard fought. The U13 Vikings had a tough match against the Troopers going down 2 nil, whilst the All Stars with the help of Abby Toshach held the Scorchers to a 2 nil draw as well. The U17 All Stars fought valiantly against a full strength Voodoos side who put away 5 goals with Alice Phillips, Sophie Gampe and Rachel Parisse all scoring in their first convincing win of the season. With a number of first time players the Totally Tilted showed great courage and conviction against the U13 Boys Rep team. Supported by Nikki Bock, Tanya Barron and Claire Schemer the girls held the boys to a very respectful score. The final game of the U17’s saw the Bombers pitted against Malanda Magic. Both teams showed great defensive plays throughout the entirety of the game with neither being able to gain the upper hand. With the Veterans playing in the State Championships the Premier Ladies played their first round of the season. Belair were dominant against an under strength Shooters with Helen Harris showing her skills in the circle putting away 5 goals. In the other game Cruisers went down to Pluckers with Danai Paige, Rylee Venables and Jody Barletta scoring for the team. With the Men playing off against each other in a round robin competition due to Shamrocks forfeiting the Bombers, K9’s and White Knights played a power house action packed 90 minutes of hockey. With plenty of action both in the circle and defensively the games were a show of skills and dominance and indicate a great competition for the rest of the season. The Association is still taking registrations so any one young sad old looking to keep fit and have fun are welcome to come along next Saturday and join up. Nominations close 10 May 2014. MAREEBA BASKETBALL INC. Eurostars Men and Baiada Steggles Ladies maintained their competition lead in the Senior grades following comfortable victories in Mareeba Basketball fixtures played last week. While Timberwolves are now equal competition leaders with Panthers in the Under 16 Junior Division. A top of the ladder clash between these teams resulted in a 24 to 14 victory to the Timberwolves combination. Eagles Under 14 Juniors continue to impress with good performances throughout the season. However the young Under 12 Juniors are having a keen tussle and each of the 3 sides are capable of gaining top honours at seasons’ end. Actually all Senior and Junior teams have a further 4 weeks of fixtures in which they can consolidate their position in the Mareeba Club competition. Certainly top place in their respective grade will give those teams a distinct advantage going into the Semi-Finals. Great news is the commencement of Inter-Town Junior Carnivals with teams from Atherton, Mulgrave Association, Port Douglas and Mareeba competing in a number

of Junior Divisions. Atherton will host the first Carnival and the other centres including Mareeba will conduct Carnivals later in the year. By Ryan Groube Five-eighth Dwayne Williams put on an attacking masterclass as the Gladiators ambushed an out of sorts Roosters at the Tableland Derby in Mareeba on May 3. The ‘Gators ran in 11 tries to two in the 62 -12 hammering. Williams scored two tries and had a hand in setting up the majority of the ‘Gators attacking raids.

Williams untouchable as ‘Gators crush Roosters

The best on ground performance saw the diminutive playmaker awarded the inaugural Eddie Fraser perpetual trophy. The win propels the ‘Gators into a logam of teams mid-table ahead of a nightmare three-game stretch away from home against competition heavy weights. ‘Gators coach Cameron McPherson said the coming weeks would be a real litmus test for the team.

“It is always nice to beat Atherton and it is nice to go back to back for the first time this season,” he said. “We have an extra hard run of games now in a row which will be a real test of how we are travelling.” Roosters coach Karle Hammond said the loss was a reality check for his side after a morale boosting away win against Yarrabah the week prior. “It was very disappointing. Last week we took one step forward but

tonight it feels as though we have taken three steps backwards,” he said. The job doesn’t get any easier for the Roosters who host the top of the table Brothers Innisfail in Atherton this weekend. Earlier in the day, the ‘Gators Reserves put together a strong second half to defeat Atherton 28-12. Early in the second half, scores were locked at 12-12 before the ‘Gators ran in three unanswered tries

Big Adam bats and bowls to award By Ryan Groube

Adam Roy receives the third division cricketer of the year award from Cricket Far North life member John Beu. Photo Peter Roy

Adam Roy would have helped a lot of the far north’s third division cricketers find God during the 2013-14 season. Built like a solid brick outhouse, the Bandits tearaway spearhead tormented opposition batsman and played a key role in the local team’s premiership win this season. On April 26, Roy was crowned Cricket Far North’s third division player of the year at a formal ceremony in Cairns. A typical fast bowler, Roy was more excited by his batting average rather than the damage he inflicted with his searing pace bowling. In 10 games Roy scored 343 runs with a high score of 123 and a batting average touching on 50. Despite his outstanding performances with the bat it is the 30-year-old’s bowling which was a cut above the rest of the competition last season. He conceded only eight runs per wicket on his way to claiming 19 scalps at a miserly economy rate of just 2.1 an over. Work commitments meant Roy could only play every second game for the Bandits with opposition teams praying they’d avoid the moustachioed wrecking ball. When Roy suited up for the Bandits opposition batsman were more concerned by losing their ribs than their wickets. Roy began playing cricket as a youngster and during his teens played representative cricket in all corners of Queensland.

About eight years ago work commitments took priority and he gave away cricket, only coming back two seasons ago to play with the Bandits. Roy said while he was surprised to pick up the award he was happier that the team had success. “It isn’t all about me taking wickets. Our fielders take the catches and our batsman went out there and put runs on the board which takes the pressure off,” he said. “It felt good [winning the award]. I have never been called out on stage like that before.” Roy said he was looking forward to going around again in 2014-15 and hoped that the Bandits would soon take the step from third division to

reserve grade. “We have a lot of really good Under 14s and 16s coming through so hopefully in a couple of years we will be able to field a really good reserve grade team,” he said. Tully’s Gurinder Mann was named best and fairest in First Grade and also received the Players Player award. United’s Thomas Edwards took home the Under 21 player of the year while Bernie Walsh, also from United, took out 2nd Division’s top award. Graeson Turner from Atherton was crowned the Under 16s player of the year.

to record a comfortable victory. The Roosters only victory came in the Under 18s where the visitors were too strong for the ‘Gators running out 30-18 winners. Prior to the A Grade game, the ‘Gators formally launched the Eddie Fraser perpetual trophy. Fraser is a former Mareeba Easts and ‘Gators player who has been battling cancer. The award is in recognition of his service to rugby league.

Undermanned Bulls shine through The Mareeba Bulls rose from the ashes with a dominant display over the weekend, totally outplaying rivals the Marlin Coast Rangers, scoring ten goals and conceding two in the mens premier and reserve grade divisions. The premiers won 5-2 with Victor Madrid, Elliot Gardner and Larry Maggio giving the Bulls the 3-0 lead at half time and Shaun Owens getting one and Gardner getting his second to give the Bulls a 5-2 win. In the Reserve grade a Simeon Malahoff penalty gave the away side a 1-0 lead at half time with Karl Srhoj getting two in the second half along wth Sam Girgenti and Tim Woulfe getting one each for the 5-0 drubbing. The Bulls’ victories were even more impressive considering they were down several key players through all games. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said the results showed the depth of talent available to the MUFC. “We had up to 10 guys missing from the premier and reserve games and it’ didn’t matter,” Srhoj said. “It’s a great result but we will continue to train and improve. “With the support of the Mareeba community there won’t but much that can stop us.”

Swimming club presents awards

Aquatic achievers at Mareeba Swimming Club have been recognised during a presentation dinner in the Mareeba International Club on Friday night. Teenagers Bradley Newlands, 13, and Jodie Lea,16, took out the club’s Senior Swimmers of the Year, with 14-year-old David Eade taking out Swimmer of The Year for Multi-Class. Joshua Theakston was the club’s junior male swimmer of the year, with his sister Nicole tying with Nadia Falvo for the junior female category. Most Personal Bests went to Eade in the male category and Marina Prince in the female category. The most improved swimmers were Sarah Myrteza, Bradley Davies, Ma-

rina Prince, Danika Prizmic, Hayden Repell and Finian Weaver. Club president Kevin Davies said the club was going from strength to strength but also expressed a need for new committee members. “It’s been a very good year, we sent 10 swimmers to state finals and one to nationals,” he said. “There’s been a lot of close carnivals and we’re up against clubs in Cairns that can train all year round because they are in heated pools. “We do want to bring new people into the committee particularly before the AGM so we can ease the transition in, so it’s not all a big hit at once.” Coach June Cotter said the club was hoping to attract new members for next season. “We’re going to run a membership drive with a ‘bring along a buddy’ day and try to put the fun into it with activities like goggle tossing, which is always a favourite,” she said. “We are aiming to have 15 swimmers go away to state this coming season and at least three reach nationals.”

Pain, disability can’t stop for David A fractured arm was never going to stop local multiclass swimmer David Eade by living his dream of competing at Nationals. On April 20, Eade swam in the 50 metre freestyle at the Georgina Hope Australian Age and Multiclass Age Championships at Sydney Olympic Park. The Mareeba swimmer recorded a time of 48.76 seconds in his heat despite having to remove a cast from his arm prior to taking to the water. Swimming in pain, Eade’s time was only fractionally outside the 48.44 second time he recorded to qualify for the event. Eade suffers from Spina Bifida, a condition that affects the spinal cord,

and uses swimming as a remedy to keep limber. The youngster took to the Mareeba swimming pool at two years old and has been a part of the Wildcats swimming team for about five years. Although he was nervous, Eade said he never had any thoughts of letting his injury stop him from competing. “I went there and had a go and tried my hardest but before I swam I was really nervous,” he said. Eade said he hoped to compete at the Nationals again in 2015. At the Wildcat’s presentation night on Friday, he was awarded the multiclass swimmer of the year and also took out the award for the male who set the most personal best times during the season.

Tweety and Tas on track A husband-and-wife driver duo went head to head for the first time at Mareeba Speedway on Sunday in front of a delighted crowd. Geoff and Kylie Roeser from Cairns both race Outlaw sprint sedans adorned with Looney Tunes characters Tasmanian Devil and Tweety Bird. Several other drivers dropped out of their heat of Mareeba Motor Racing Club’s Outlaw Classic competition at the May 4 meet, leaving Geoff and Kylie as the only two racers left. Geoff, the far more experienced driver, gave his wife a head start,

eventually overtaking her and winning the race. Kylie, who has raced many times seated next to Geoff as a passenger, said that she insisted that her husband didn’t go easy on her. “I tell him every time – don’t you even think about letting me win,” she said. Geoff said the Looney Tunes characters on their car wings were carefully chosen. “One thing I’ve always believed in is that racing isn’t just about winning, it’s about entertainment for the kids and the crowd,” he said. “When I was a kid we used to

watch a racer in Gladstone called the Pink Panther who would race in a bright pink car and throw lollies into the crowd – that memory stuck with me.” As for the other races on the day there were few dramatics, with no major crashes or upsets.
