Storage boxes and a skeleton crew are all that remain at a $6.5 million State Government building in Mareeba that will lie empty from next month. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) are in the process of relocating staff and office equipment from Block H to Block B at the Mareeba Agri-science Hub at Peters Street. In October 2013, The Express exclusively reported that DAFF would not renew its lease with the Department of Housing and Public Works

(DHPW) leaving the new multimillion dollar building vacant. DAFF had originally planned to be out of Block H by the end of 2013, but the DHPW’s failure to find a replacement tenant has allowed the department more time to complete the relocation. The DHPW unsuccessfully spent the latter half of 2013 trying to find a new tenant, either public or private, for Block H and are considering selling the building. “...the department is continuing to investigate options to backfill the vacant space within Block H,” a DHPW spokesperson said. “Department of Agriculture, Forestry and

Fisheries still currently occupy a portion of the space in Block H and the remainder is vacant.” The decision was taken to consolidate the DAFF service at Block B with the department citing “efficiencies and cost effectiveness” as the reason for the relocation. “Once the relocation is complete, the new access arrangements to DAFF services in Block B via Peters Street will be promoted to the regional community,” a DAFF spokesperson said. “This is expected to be completed by early February.” In December 2011, Block H was opened with pomp and fanfare by the former Labor State Gov-

ernment’s agriculture minister Tim Mulherin. An “agricultural research facility”, Block H was funded by the sale of the Kairi Research Station land, and was set to transform Mareeba as a leader in agricultural research and training. “The opening of the Mareeba Agriscience Hub will establish the Atherton Tablelands as a national leader in tropical agricultural science and training,” Mr Mulherin said at the opening in December 2011. The Australian Agricultural College Corporation originally leased office space at Block H but abandoned the building in July 2013 for a facility at Walkamin citing the need for additional space.

The winners of The Express’s Shop Local Christmas competition are all smiles after each winning $500 in vouchers from local stores who were a part of the promotion. The competition, which is run by The Express every year, is designed to encourage Tableland residents to shop in local businesses for Christmas. The three winners, who were selected from a pool of thousands on December 19,

can spend their vouchers at the more than 30 stores that participated in the competition. The Express Managing Editor Carl Portella said the competition had been embraced by Tableland shoppers. “This competition has been popular from the beginning but it’s always great to see locals supporting locals – that’s what makes the Tableland a great community,” he said. “It’s very popular with both businesses and their customers because not only does it help keep money in this area

Theresa Whiteing said the experience was ‘heartwarming’ and hoped to see it repeated in the future. “It felt amazing, really personally rewarding, to do this because Christmas can actually be a hard time of the year for a lot of families doing it tough – especially if they are unwilling to ask for help. It took one hell of a fight, but on January 2, 2014 residents of the Mareeba Shire finally got their council back. On a cloudless Thursday morning, the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) opened its doors for the first time since being forcibly amalgamated by the Beattie Labor Government in 2008. The phones rang, ratepayers streamed through the doors – the first complaint was a resident with drainage issues – and after a short delay the councillors of the Mareeba Shire were sworn in. About 30 members of the community crammed into the Rankin Street council chambers for the ceremony at the delayed time of 9.30am. The mood among the crowd and the prospective councillors was buoyant as former MSC transfer manager, now acting chief executive Rod Ferguson, called up elected representatives alphabetically following the swearing in of Mayor Tom Gilmore. Nipper Brown, in making the Declaration of Offices, copped a good heckle from an audience member urging him to “read the fine print” before signing. Mr Ferguson stuffed up the pronunciation of Karen Ewin by adding a ‘g’ sound which Ms Ewin, who then did the same thing, said light-heartedly “now you’ve got me saying it [wrong].” Mary Graham recited a short story about a colleague who could never quite properly forge her signature during her stint at the podium. Jenny Jensen – full name Jenifer Joy Jensen – copped one from Mr Ferguson, who was in fine form, declaring that the ABC had “named a radio station after you”.

Allan Holmes and Alan Pedersen got off reasonably lightly but Mr Pedersen had to do a couple of double takes to satisfy official photographer Peter Roy. Speaking to The Express after the ceremony, Mayor Tom Gilmore said he had no doubt the swearing in of the first council of the reborn MSC was a moment of “great historical significance”. Mayor Gilmore said his council understood that they had a once in a lifetime opportunity and that they were ready to “make the tough decisions”. By the end of January, the MSC will need to submit a budget, are expected to be at an advanced stage in finding a full time chief executive and will have key corporate structure decisions to make. Mr Gilmore said the challenges in creating a new council will be very different to those faced during the amalgamation of the four former shires under the TRC. “It is a reconstruction of a new entity and that is what it is going to be. It is not going to be business as usual as an old bush shire,” he said. “It will be a modern entity and that is the exciting part because you get these opportunities once in a lifetime to build something new and to grow it and to turn it into something of great value to the community for the future. “[I am] quite sure that the council I have are intelligent enough and capable enough to understand complex issues and most certainly dedicated enough and capable enough to make tough decisions. It is going to be a wonderful council I am quite sure.” After morning tea, council met for its first meeting with Cr Jensen defeating Cr Pedersen in the race for deputy Mayor. The MSC will meet on the first and third Wednesday of the month.

Hottest summer on record By Boyd Robertson

Tableland residents are being warned to keep cool as the region sweats through one of the hottest summers on record. Temperatures in Mareeba reached a toasty 36.4 degrees on January 1 and 3, with only a minimal spattering of rain from a passing thunderstorm last Friday working to cool things down. Although the Bureau of Meteorology predicts temperatures to drop to 31 degrees by Friday,

only scattered showers and more summer storms are on the way, meaning the heat will continue sending Tableland residents flocking to pools and swimming holes. The Carusi family have been spending a lot of time in their 58,000 litre pool as the summer wears on, with dad Frank describing it as the best way to keep the kids cool. “We’ve got aircon in the house but only in one room so we’ve been in the pool with the kids nearly all holidays,” he said.

“I was out for a trail ride a while ago and started getting heat stress, with a spinning head and felt lethargic, and I came right back here and jumped in.” Medical experts are offering residents tips to avoiding a similar brush with heat stress, including drinking plenty of cool water (importantly, before becoming thirsty), staying indoors, or going for a swim like the Carusi family. Although Mareeba Hospital hasn’t experienced an increase in patients with heat-related



problems, Director of Medical Services Doctor Tjaart Grobbelaar said it was still important for people to stay cool this summer, urging the public to be alert for the signs of heat stress. “Heat-related illness occurs when the body overheats and cannot cool itself down,” Dr Grobbelaar said. “The effects of overheating on the body can vary from heat rash and cramps through to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.” Dr Grobbelaar said heat stroke could be lifethreatening.

Hit and miss Christmas

Mareeba Animal Refuge operator Jennifer Walsh, pictured here with four-month old Siggy and three-monthold Shiralee, is again begging Tableland residents to desex their pets in order to curb the numbers of feral cats facing euthanasia at her centre.

By Ryan Groube The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce’s new president says something must be done to reinvigorate the retail sector after a hit and miss Christmas trading period across the Tableland. Newly-elected Mareeba chamber president Joe Moro said the majority of retailers had been reporting “very ordinary” returns. Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce president Connie Duncan said on the southern Tableland results had “varied from business to business”. The Express conducted a straw poll of businesses in Mareeba, Atherton and Kuranda with some recording slightly stronger sales than the previous year while others called the period “disappointing”. Mr Moro said the feedback the chamber had received showed a pressing need to outline a retail plan for Mareeba. “Feedback received from local businesses is trading of the Christmas period was very ordinary. They believe this is a reflection of the current financial hardship families are facing rather than people shopping out of town,” he said. “The chamber needs to focus on a retail shopping strategy in 2014.” Hastie Centre Furnishings manager Robyn Vogler said this year’s Christmas period had been one of the quietest in many years. Fine Treasures owner Grace O’Brien said she had been “taken by surprise” by how busy her retail business had been saying sales had been “much better than last year”. McMahon’s Betta Home Living owner Patsy McMahon said “after a horror five years” the business had had a “very good” trading period driving by washing

Plea to desex cats By Boyd Robertson The operator of the Tableland’s only animal shelter is warning that more and more cats will need to be put down unless owners desex their pets. Jennifer Walsh at the Mareeba Animal Refuge is facing the grim task of euthanizing cats and kittens because her facility is jammed to capacity with runaway felines. Ms Walsh blames an extended breeding season and owners unwilling to pay the cost of desexing their pets for the surge in feral and lost cat numbers. “Our cat and kitten situation here is just out of control right now – I’m not confident at all of finding homes for a lot of these animals and I will have to be putting 10 of them down soon,” she said. “Pretty much it’s just people that don’t want to pay to have the desexing done - what will happen is their cat will become pregnant and if they can’t offload the kittens they will simply dump them in the bush.” For the unenviable job of selecting which animals are to be put down, Ms Walsh has to take the popularity of different cat breeds into account.

“Normally we will start with the animals that less healthy, less likely to survive and less socialised,” she said. “After that we pretty much have to do it by colour – the rarer breeds like blues and greys are more likely to be sold so we start with the common colours like white, black or patchy ones. “It’s an awful job and that’s why it’s so important to us to get the message out there – please, please desex your cats or this is just going to keep happening.” Last year 219 cats were captured by the Tablelands Regional Council, only 28 of which were sold or recovered by their owners. The rest were destroyed. YAPS Animal Refuge Centre in Cairns is also suffering from a deluge of lost and feral cats. Since that centre does not euthanize, they are forced to turn away people approaching them with found animals. Ms Walsh said although the price of desexing – often between $170 and $200 – deterred some owners, it was actually cheaper to pick up a new cat from Mareeba Animal Shelter, which desexes, microchips and vaccinates animals as part of their $150 price.

machine sales. “It was a very good year for us and I want to thank all the locals for being so loyal in deciding to shop locally,” she said. “Can you believe everyone went out and bought washing machines? If my husband got me a washing machine for Christmas I’d wrap it around his ears.” In Kuranda, Just Gorgeous owner Jill Melody said trading had been on par with previous years and that more needed to be done to promote the town as a Christmas shopping destination. “I think people want to get away from the shopping centre scene which is just insane at this time of year which is why it has always surprised me that more people don’t come to Kuranda to do their Christmas shopping,” she said. “We had been pretty quiet but the weekend before Christmas all our regular locals came in and really helped pull us through.”

Timber mill closure memories stirred By Boyd Robertson

Police up man power on roads for holidays By Ryan Groube Tableland roads remained fatality free during the festive season as the annual Christmas Road Safety Campaign nears the halfway stage. Police say an increased presence on the roads has led to a decrease in traffic offences, particularly speeding offences, with commuters unwilling to risk a fine. Acting officer in charge of the Mareeba Road Policing Unit Sergeant John Ridgway said on the whole police had been impressed with commuter’s behaviour during the Christmas operation. “We have also seen a reduction in the number of injury crashes. This year we have had six which is a reduction on last year where we had nine,” Sergeant Ridgway said. “I think a lot of the reason for this decrease [in tick-

ets and crashes] has to do with the patrols we are doing. People know that at this time of year there could be a police car around every corner or over every hill.” Since the campaign began on December 13, the Mareeba Road Policing Unit has issued 150 speeding tickets – down 10 at the same time last year. Drink driving numbers rose slightly this year with 39 motorists blowing above the legal limit, up from 36 at the same stage last year. Of the 39 drink drivers, six registered readings of more than three times above the limit with the two highest readings recorded in the Mareeba CBD in the week prior to Christmas. A complaint from the public led to police intercepting a driver who blew .186 – the highest reading of the campaign in Mareeba’s CBD.

The release of federal cabinet papers from 25 years ago detailing conflict between the Hawke and Bjelke-Peterson governments over conservation of the Wet Tropics region has stirred local memories. The inscribing of the Wet Tropics Region in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1989 had a devastating effect on the timber-based economy of the southern Tableland, particularly the mountain town of Ravenshoe. Sawmills processing huge rainforest trees felled during selective logging and land-clearing were either shut down or reduced to milling plantation logs at reduced capacity. The timber workforce, numbering around 2000, including related professions, was left largely without means and either moved elsewhere or subsisted on compensation and welfare for many years. Federal Cabinet papers from the Hawke Government released on January 1 revealed strong opposition to the proposed listing, mainly from the timber industry and thenQueensland premier Sir Joh BjelkePeterson. “Since our announcement on June 5 of our intention to proceed immediately towards nomination for the Wet Tropics of northeast Queensland for inclusion on the World Heritage List, the Queensland Government’s attitude has been one of vociferous

opposition,” the papers state. Bjelke-Peterson led a sustained lobbying campaign against the nomination, including pressuring local councils, businesses and Aboriginal organisations to oppose the entry, but was forced to resign under a storm of controversy before the decision was made. Then-Federal Environment Minister Graham Richardson led the nomination for the listing over a three-year period, reportedly remarking “2000 jobs in Far North Queensland is nothing compared to two million votes in the cities.” Richardson visited Ravenshoe in September 1987 and was met with a crowd of angry mill workers hurling abuse, and had to be whisked away by minders. One of the men yelling at him was Reg Lockeyer, who at the time worked as the manager of the Associated Plywood Sales Mill in Ravenshoe. Mr Lockyer played a key role in lobbying against the listing and organising investors to buy back mills placed into receivership after the decision. “At the time, 35 per cent of the parents of Ravenshoe school students were already on social security, so it was pretty serious from our point of view,” Mr Lockyer said. “[When Richardson visited] I was yelling at him myself even though I’m normally pretty quiet – he was saying such outrageous things so he

had us stirred up. “[After the decision] there were a lot of unemployed people living on the pension and once you’ve put fuel in the car and food on the table there isn’t much left – myself, all of a sudden I had no real job and all my experience was in timber, it was hard to find work at my age, and we also had ten children.” Tablelands Regional Councillor Geoff Stocker was, at the time, the freshly-arrived head of the Atherton CSIRO office, and argued against the listing. Cr Stocker had spent 15 years studying the dynamics and resilience of the North Queensland rainforests and believed they could easily survive selective logging operations, in which only a low number of suitable trees are felled per hectare. “My approach at the time was that of a rather naive scientist – I believed that the decision would be made on the best arguments based on the available facts,” he said. Cr Stocker said Ravenshoe was left as a “dole town” for many years afterwards and the entire ordeal changed his perception of science and politics. I’ve had a number of problems when underpinning scientific issues are chucked aside in favour of the politics at the time,” he said. “I went from a naive scientist to someone that was a lot more cynical about the political process.”

Rosa and her team look ahead By Boyd Robertson In the aftermath of a trying de-amalgamation process, the much-reduced Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) will now shift its attention to the future, including finishing the job of amalgamation begun by the state government in 2008. With the re-establishment of Mareeba Shire, the TRC has now shrunk to (17.5 per cent of its original land area) and about 18,000 ratepayers. It has also lost the divisions of northern councillors Gaye Taylor, Evan McGrath and Jenny Jensen, with Cr Jensen gaining a seat in the new Mareeba Shire Council (MSC). TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the TRC would now look to the future and focus on fine-tuning its new planning scheme to finally complete the original amalgamation of the three remaining shires. “This will be a big step forward in completing amalgamation,” she said. “Right now we’ve still got the three separate town-planning schemes from the previous three shires – it’s a little easier now that our town planners don’t have to know and understand four townplanning schemes but it is still a big job.” Mayor Lee Long defeated then-TRC Mayor Tom Gilmore for her current position in 2012, and will now be political neighbours with her former adversary, who was elected Mayor of the new MSC in November 2013. Despite this, Mayor Lee Long said there would be few opportunities for awkwardness. “Although Mayors do meet up at conferences and events like that, we won’t actually have that much to do with each other,” she says Both Mayor Lee Long and Councillor Shaaron Linwood described the amalgamation as a bad idea. “I think we were handed a poisoned chalice, although we did the best we could with what we had available to us after it happened,” Cr Linwood said.

Councillors Shaaron Linwood, Rod Marti, Geoff Stocker, Marjorie Pagani, Deputy Mayor Evan McGrath, Mayor Rosa Lee Long, Councillors Peter Hodge, Gaye Taylor and Jenny Jensen after the final meeting of the TRC before de-amalgamation at council’s Atherton office on December 19.

Old batteries power fundraiser QCWA Atherton Tablelands Division are collecting old car, tractor, motorbike and truck batteries as a recycling fundraiser. QCWA Atherton Tableland Division President, Mrs Lesley Mackney, was calling on anyone who had these old spent batteries hidden in the shed or stored away, to recycle them free of charge. “We’re asking that when you clean out your shed, that you recycle your big old batteries for a good cause, at no cost to the consumer,” she said. “We’ve mobilized our ladies and they’re ready to collect hundreds of batteries as part of our fundraising.” Mrs Mackney said the QCWA was raising money for the Atherton Tableland Division and their Northern Region Meeting in May 2014. “The Atherton Region Meeting is a training and learning experience for the ladies who will be travelling from as far as Cooktown in the north to Sarina in the south and west to Mt Isa. “Our achievements vary at each region meeting, but as well as learning new skills and new initiatives, we also put up resolutions that will go forward to our state conference and then onto governments,” she said. Assessment for ag hub The Coordinator General has declared an integrated agricultural project proposed for North Queensland a ‘coordinated project’. Acting Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the Etheridge Integrated Agricultural Project is proposed for 326,000 ha of land west of Georgetown in the Etheridge Shire Council area. “Integrated Food and Energy Developments Pty Ltd propose to create an extensive agricultural hub producing sugar and guar beans for Asian markets,” Mr Seeney said. “The proponents also have longer term plans to include a sugar mill, meat processing plant, aquaculture operation and alternative energy facilities in their project. “Should it proceed, this project would provide a boost to the North Queensland economy that has been hit hard in recent times by the live cattle export ban and drought. “The State Government welcomes privately funded projects that have the potential to create jobs and positive economic outcomes, and this proposal supports our vision to grow the agricultural pillar of the economy.” Mr Seeney said the Coordinator General’s declaration signals the start of a rigorous environmental impact statement (EIS) process and should not be construed as the green light for

this project to proceed. “This ambitious proposal will now be thoroughly assessed by the Coordinator General with draft terms of reference for an Environmental Impact Statement to be released for public comment from January 11,” he said. The proposal includes a 240,000ha beef cattle operation, 65,000ha of cropping land, 18,000ha designated for water storage, and 2,000ha of infrastructure. It features a constructed lake, overland gravity channels to support trickle tape irrigation, accommodation, including temporary construction camps, seasonal village and permanent residential developments, and the installation and operation of a temporary on-site pipe manufacturing facility during the construction phase. For full project details visit www. dsdip.qld.gov.au/etheridge-project Strong start for tourism Port Douglas has capped a strong year of growth in tourist numbers with forward bookings for 2014 looking to continue that trend. Doug Ryan, executive officer of Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree, said the town had a bumper Christmas period, with enquiries at an all time high for accommodation in Port Douglas. “The region is beginning to fill up and we should see the traditional

steady influx of visitors from Boxing Day onwards,” he said. Shane Branch, director of Hibiscus Resort and Spa, said accommodation at the boutique resort was sitting at 90 per cent in January, which was a strong start to the year. “We are holding over 2000 bookings already and Europe and North America are surging back into the market,” he said. Mr Branch said he has had more than a dozen site inspections from wholesales that sell Australia, which was also a strong sign of confidence in the market. He said the Northern Hemisphere made up around 38% of Hibiscus Resort and Spa’s occupancy pre-Global Financial Crisis. “We haven’t seen wholesales in Port for five years,” he said. “Domestic visitors are up, but it is the return of our international markets that is key.” Mr Ryan said this was a trend showing across Port Douglas, which was further backed up by research undertaken by the International Visitors Survey. The survey, released by Tourism Research Australia in September, found domestic nights increased by 15% from 1,493,000 in 2012 to 1,723,000 in 2013, while international visitors nights rose by 49% from 396,000 in 2012 to 590,000 in 2013. Sheryn Blundstone, owner of Peninsula Boutique Hotel, said she also had strong forward bookings for 2014. “The accommodation bookings from Christmas eve leading up to new year is a lot stronger this year than previous years,” she said. “Traditionally we would have had more bookings arriving from December 28 to 29, but it does appear this year that there is a lot more demand for the week prior to Christmas. “The bookings are remaining very strong to the middle of January, but there also seems to be an increase in demand for the end of January, which is reflective of the people coming away for the Australia Day weekend.” Ms Blundstone said February and March will also be better than 2013, with an increase in international bookings. “Typically the international market takes over from the domestic market as we move into the low season, and we are definitely seeing an increase in enquiry for this period,” she said. Mr Ryan said there was still accommodation available for those looking to holiday in Port Douglas and said last minute deals could be snapped up online. Play it safe at dams As the temperature soars, the State Government has urged holiday makers and locals to play it safe at dams this Summer. Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle said in previous years, swimmers had sustained injuries at dams and waterways that could have been avoided with common sense. Mr McArdle said people taking advantage of our dams and waterways should always think about other people’s safety, as well as their own to make it a happy, refreshing, affordable and injury-free way to escape summer’s heat. “Boaties need to keep well clear of swimmers, only tow skiers where it is permitted in deeper areas of lakes that allow skiing, and never venture

too close to dam and weir walls,” Mr McArdle said. “Visitors should observe all safety signage, never swim in fast moving water and keep away from areas that contain debris. “Campers, boaties and holiday makers are also advised to check the SunWater website before setting off, to ensure their preferred regional dam’s recreational area meets their holiday needs.” SunWater General Manager Tom Vanderbyl said every holiday season visitors flock to dams and waterways for boating, fishing and camping. “Our dams are popular places for friends and families to visit during the holiday period, however, we ask everyone to use caution, be aware of the risks and take care of each other,” Mr Vanderbyl said. SunWater’s dam safety tips: • Observe all signage – they contain important information about the water, potential hazards and BGA (Blue-Green Algae) levels • Do not boat, swim or ski while under the influence of alcohol or drugs – look out for your mates • Boaties, swimmers and skiers should remain a safe distance from dam and weir walls and outlet structures • Dams and waterways often have hidden dangers, such as submerged stumps and rocks that can injure water skiers, boaties and swimmers • Boaties should stay clear of swimmers and skiers and stay in designated recreational areas. For more information on dam facilities and conditions, visit SunWater’s website or call 13 15 89. New councils open doors Acting Local Government Minister says January 2, 2014 marked a new chapter in Queensland’s local government history with the start of four new councils in Noosa, Livingstone, Douglas and Mareeba. Mr Bleijie said the Newman Government had delivered on its election promise to right the wrongs of Labor’s forced amalgamations in 2008. “This is an historic day for democracy for the residents in these areas who fought long and hard to have their voices heard over the appalling miscarriage of justice dealt them by Peter Beattie and Anna Bligh,” Mr Bleijie said. “In stark contrast to Labor, the Newman Government believes local councils are best placed to make the right decisions for their communities. “We promised to give communities a vote if there was a chance of re-establishing a viable, independent council and we kept our word. “It’s now up to the new Mayors and Councillors to work together with each other and their neighbouring councils to get the best results for their communities. “We look forward to working with them.” Mr Bleijie said the first order of business for the new councils would be to consider the interim budget prepared by the transfer managers. “While there’s no doubt the new councils have some big decisions to make in the coming months, I’m confident we have the right mix of fresh ideas and experience to set the new councils on the right course,” he said. “I wish the Noosa, Livingstone, Douglas and Mareeba councils every success as they set about delivering for their communities.”

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

Starting at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema this Thursday is one of the most colourful films of the year. FREE BIRDS is animation at its best and has a delightful story-line as well. This clever movie, rated G, will appeal to all ages from 3 to 103! Continuing this week is the spectacular Disney animation, FROZEN. Everyone who has seen it has been inspired by its terrific story, colour and music. It's real family movie. THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG also screens for a third fabulous week. It took over $19million in its first week, which will make it by far the biggest film of the year. It's a big movie in every way, with mind boggling effects, great acting and a great story to complete the package. If you have not seen ENDERS GAME with Harrison Ford, there is one last chance to see this exciting fantasy tonight.

FREE BIRDS

After years of fruitless warning of his farmyard brethren of the coming Thanksgiving doom, Reggie the Turkey finds himself spared as the annual Pardoned Turkey. However, Reggie's easy life is disrupted by Jake, a fanatic turkey who drags him along with the insane idea of going back in time to make sure turkeys are not part of the first Thanksgiving. Through foolhardiness and luck, the pair manage to take an experimental time machine to do just that. Now in 1621 at the Plymouth colony, Reggie and Jake find themselves in the middle of a turkey clan's struggle for survival. In doing so, their preconceptions of the world and themselves are challenged forever in a conflict from which the world will never be the same.

to find Anna's sister Elsa (Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter. Review by Louise Keller: Destined to be the family hit of the Christmas season, Frozen has all the elements to make it an outright winner. Visually gorgeous with its winter wonderland setting, ice palaces and trees dripping with crystal icicles, this is a smoothie of a film with characters you can root for, hummable songs and a heart that is as warm as its theme is cold. Loosely based on Hans Christian Anderson's story The Snow Queen, there is enough humour to counter any notion of schmaltz with its princesses theme and you'll fall head over heels with Sven, the scene stealing reindeer who gesticulates with his eyes. There is also a buck-toothed snowman called Olaf who dreams of summer and whose carrot nose Sven wants to eat - plus magic trolls disguised as moss-covered stones, who are love experts.

ENDERS GAME

The Earth was ravaged by the Formics, an alien race seemingly determined to destroy humanity. Seventy years later, the people of Earth remain banded together to prevent their own annihilation from this technologically superior alien species. Ender Wiggin, a quiet but brilliant boy, may become the savior of the human race. He is separated from his beloved sister and his terrifying brother and brought to battle school in orbit around earth. He will be tested and honed into an empathetic killer who begins to despise what he does as he learns to fight in hopes of saving Earth and his family.

Bandits look to sure-up finals berth By Ryan Groube The Mareeba Bandits will be out to sure up their position at the top of the Cricket Far North third division table when they host Mulgrave Toads at Kerribee Park on Sunday. With eight games remaining before finals, senior Bandit Danny Shaw (pictured right, photo Peter Roy) said the club couldn’t afford to drop off in 2014. “We only have one two day game left and the rest are one dayers. Because most of our games in the first half of the season were played up here we will spend most of 2014 travelling away,” he said. “In one dayers you either get points or you don’t so we can’t afford to drop four or five games because that would change everything.” Shaw said that in late-January senior players head off for the Goldfield Ashes, an annual cricket carnival, and would need to bring in Under 16s players to field a team that week. After a last gasp win over the second placed Rovers in their final fixture of 2013, the Bandits have opened up a seven point lead at the top of the table. Rovers are in second while Port Douglas, the only team to have beaten the Bandits this season, loom dangerously in third. Shaw said he has no doubt that two of those three teams will battle it out for the title in 2014. The Bandits strong start to the season has also been recognised in the ‘champion player’ tally - an ongoing point system awarded by umpires. Adam Roy is second on the list, Shaw in third while batsman Robert Taylor sits fifth in the standings.

Windfall for far north’s golf clubs Four far northern golf club’s have each recieved $10,000 in funding to attract more young players to the sport. The FNQ Golfing Association (FNQGA) has secured the funds for the Mareeba, Ravenshoe Millstream, El Arish and Carpentaria clubs. The funding will allow the clubs to purchase modified equipment for juniors and to send golfing professionals

out to schools to run clinics in 2014. Sean Metcalf from FNQGA said: “this funding will be used to target juniors which are sadly lacking [in numbers] up this way.” “This money will help us get into the schools and show these kids that there are other sports to play than just football or rugby league.” The clinics will target children in their early teens.

Dimbulah Dolphins Swimming Club has mustered a full squad to attend meets for the first time in years, sparking hopes of a revival for the club. The club sent 22 swimmers between the age of six and 16 to the Borzi Shield meet in Atherton in November 2013, something had hasn’t happened as long as anyone at the club can remember. Although the squad didn’t come back with any major wins it still marks a dramatic change from previous years, in which it was forced to borrow swimmers from other clubs in order to qualify for events. Dimbulah can now take the full squad to events on the Tableland and in Cairns and compete with pride, said club secretary Maxine Smith. “What it shows is that as a club we’re starting with new members and we have a promising future,” Smith said. “We’ve had no full squad for years and years, usually only having anywhere between two and 14 kids, so we’d have to pinch swimmers off other clubs. “Now we’ve been going to competitions down in

Cairns as well as the Borzi Shield in Atherton back in November and we are looking forward to our own Dimbulah Championships in March.” Smith said the club had gone through a long period of hard times and had only survived thanks to strong community support, but the boost in squad numbers meant that things were looking up. “As a club we’ve been struggling but we’ve managed to keep going mainly because we have incredible volunteers – parents and members of the community that come in and donate their time so the pool can operate and the kids can swim,” she said. “I think what’s provided this boost is a couple of things – we have a wonderful local mum called Megan Miller who’s organised a grant for a whole heap of new equipment and we also had Lisa Curry visit the pool which was amazing for spreading awareness and showing the kids that swimming is great fun. “Lisa was truly inspirational, 50 kids turned up and were really excited.” Smith wished to extend her thanks to the club’s volunteers, its sponsors and former Tablelands Regional Shire Councillor Gaye Taylor for helping redevelop the squad.
