Customer service rewarded By Boyd Robertson Mareeba’s community will have the final say in who provides the best customer service in town. Voting in Mareeba Chamber of Commerce’s Customer Service Award is now open to the public, and will recognise the person or business that has kept its clients the happiest for the last two years. Voting is accessible through the Chamber’s Facebook Page, the Chamber website www.mareebachamber.com.
Donny Brcko, hardware manager at Mareeba Mitre 10: “My approach to customer service is to keep things casual and start everything off with a laugh – I say g’day and have a bit of a muck-around to put the customer at rest. You don’t find too many people that go into the hardware section and expect things to be totally serious – it’s a bit like a huge toy store for grownups. It also really helps to have good staff in the rest of the store because people don’t visit just one section. Usually I and the rest of the staff get positive feedback so it seems to be working – and you do need to keep the customers happy, or why would they bother coming back?”

“This award will act as an inspiration to other people and businesses to go that extra mile to improve their own customer service,” he said. “The town of Mareeba has a reputation for fantastic customer service and we really want to keep ourselves in that stereotype. “Everyone in Mareeba will now get a chance to vote for the people that epitomise that ideal.” The Express spoke to each of the nominees to find out their views on customer service, along with their special tips and tricks for keeping patrons happy.

au, or phone the office on 4092 6050. There are four people and six businesses nominated for the award. Voting will close on October 14 and the award will be presented at the Chamber’s Business Awards Gala Dinner at Mareeba Turf Club on October 26. It is the only one of the Chamber’s six Business Awards that is open to public voting. Chamber president Pietro Girgenti said it was vitally important to recognise customer service as a core business skill.
Kerry Iacovella, paint manager at Mareeba Mitre 10: “I’ve got 14 years of experience at Mitre 10 and I feel the way I approach my work is to make sure the customer gets everything they need on the first try so they don’t have to come in again and again for the same job. I also always try to follow-up with people and say ‘How did that last job go, what do you need for the next one?’ – it’s always good to hear how their last project finished up and give them tips for the next one they’re planning. It’s pretty important to have good customer service because put simply, if you don’t, the competition will!” That’s My Physio (represented by practice owner Joey Trotter): “For us, our customer service starts before someone even walks in the door – we have a text message system that reminds clients when they have an upcoming appointment so they rarely miss one. When they arrive we offer them water, a comfortable chair and see if they need anything else. The notification thing is important in subtle ways because it gives people a bit responsibility over their treatment – at the end of the day we want people to be taking their pain management into their own hands. If we can help them to do that then we’ve achieved our objectives – plus we’ve helped take the load off the health system and the taxpayers that pay for it.”
SENIOR JOURNALIST Ryan Groube
JOURNALIST Boyd Robertson
Suncorp Bank Mareeba Branch (represented by manager Valentina Caamano): “From when someone first walks in the door to the office, we want them to know that we will try to go above and beyond the basics, and that no problem is too small or too big to fix. The staff always have a smile on their face, we always try to be very approachable with a down-to earth attitude, make a connection with the client and put people at ease – but it’s also vital that everyone gets first-class service so that they feel that they are the most important part of the whole process. The customer in front of us the number one priority from our point of view – they don’t leave until they are happy.” Nathan De Lai, Manager at Outback Solar and Wind: “I’ve been here since the place opened 15 years ago and I’ve always looked at it like this: If the customer comes to you with a problem, it’s about fixing it, not making a sale. Honesty and integrity like that will lead to repeat business, even though quite often I might me sending people to my opposition. Our customer base is mainly grey nomads and sometimes it’ll happen that I’ll solve a problem for someone one year, and they’ll come back two or three years later asking ‘Do you remember my face? We skipped getting new panels in Ravenshoe and came here because you helped us out a while back’ – so it does work in the long run.” Remo Esposito, sales consultant at Sibi Girgenti Real Estate: “My values in my approach to customer service have always been honesty, integrity, efficiency, following up with the clients, listening closely and understanding their needs. People will definitely notice if they come back in and you’ve forgotten about them The way I see it is that I don’t sell a product, I sell myself – people have to trust me before they’re going to listen to a recommendation about a house. A house is a massive investment, so you must build that trust and show you’re working for them and no-one else.”

$6.5m building lies empty By Ryan Groube
Former member for Cook Jason O’Brien and former Labor Minister Tim Mulherin at the opening in 2011
A $6.5 million State Government building in Mareeba is in danger of lying unoccupied in 2014, less than two years after being opened. The Department of Housing and Public Works (DHPW) is scrambling to find a new tenant for the Mareeba Agriscience Hub in Peters Street. In the past six months, both tenants – the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAFF) and the Australian Agricultural College Corporation (AACC) – informed DHPW that they would not continue to lease the building. A spokesperson from DHPW said: “The tenancy is currently vacant and the department is working to find a new tenant.” “The department is currently investigating a range of options to fill the tenancy including finding a public sector tenant, leasing the property to a private sector tenant or selling the

MACKAY Sugar has disbanded its troubled Community Working Group (CWG) as tension between the miller and residents of Mount Molloy and Julatten came to a head last week. Earlier this year, Tableland Canegrowers signed a Sugar Supply Agreement with Mackay Sugar that will see about 700,000 tonnes transported by truck to the Mossman Mill from May 2014. The CWG was established on August 26 as a forum for residents to work with the miller to find ways of mitigating the impact 40,000 B Double movements that will pass through the towns. After a short but controversial life, The Express can reveal a refusal from both parties to negotiate on the proposed tonnage was the key reason behind the collapse of the group. “I can confirm that the anticipated tonnage was one of the concerns raised at our inaugural meeting,” Mackay Sugar communications manager Lorelei van Dalen said. “The decision to disband the CWG follows the recent resignation of the CWG Chairman (Queensland Corporate Communications Network managing director David Donohue), which resulted from what he described as some in the group ‘maintaining what seems to be an entrenched and aggressive stance’.” Mackay Sugar chief executive Quinton Hildebrand previously told The Express that reducing the amount of cane travelling to Mossman was not on the table for negotiation.

DAFF will relocate to another State Government office at the Peters Street complex. “By the end of the year, DAFF will consolidate its presence at the Mareeba complex into one building (Block B, access via Peters Street). This will be more efficient and cost effective,” a spokesperson for the department said. In December 2011, former Labor Minister Tim Mulherin officially opened the building, trumpeting that it would transform Mareeba into one of Queensland’s leading agri-science, research, training and service hubs for the primary industries sector. “The opening of the Mareeba Agriscience Hub will establish the Atherton Tablelands as a national leader in tropical agricultural science and training,” he said at the time.

Lisa Curry to visit the Tableland
OLYMPIC and Commonwealth games swim star Lisa Curry will visit the Tableland for three days in November. During her visit, which will take place 22-24 November, it is planned to include a variety of community activities including a visit to Atherton High School, a lunch for local charities and a free public fitness seminar, a chance to Swim with Lisa Curry at the Dimbulah, Mareeba, Mt Garnet and Kuranda pools and attendance at the Atherton Family Fun Day at Atherton pool. There will also be a motivational workshop aimed at local sportsmen and women. "Lisa is an enormously successful woman and Tablelands Regional Council has voted to bring her to this area, in partnership with Atherton IGA, Lake Tinaroo Resort, Atherton Coffee Club and TRC pool lessees" Mayor Rosa Lee Long said. "She is underway with a road trip designed to raise awareness about obesity and related health problems and Council seized the opportunity to bring her, and her message, to this area."
Improved parking for Tolga school
PARKING near Tolga State School will be improved in line with a petition from parents, Tablelands Regional Council decided at last week’s meeting. A footpath fronting the School on Catherine Street will also be built. "At present short term parking is provided by way of seven bays on Catherine Street which operate between 8.30am and 9.30 am and again from 2.30pm to 3.30pm and which allow for five minute stops," Mayor Rosa Lee Long said. "However a petition from parents was received by Council, via Divisional Councillor Marjorie Pagani, requesting a number of things from Council and an officer's report on those was presented to us yesterday." As a result of that report, Council will now change the short term parking on Catherine Street to four bays, each allowing for 10 minute stops between 8.30am and 9.30am and then 2.30pm to 3.30pm.
"The present 5-minute stopping time has been suggested as too short a period for those parents needing to bring their children to the adjacent preschool section," Cr Lee Long said. A new, concrete footpath will be installed adjacent to existing kerb and channelling along the Catherin St frontage of the school. Council also voted to give future consideration to additional sealing of centre median parking in Main Street outside the school. "I am happy to see Council responding positively to these requests and making life easier and safer for our school children and their families," Cr Lee Long said.
$10m in community grants
Five hundred local community organisations across Queensland will share in grants totalling more than $10 million. Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said the grants provided through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund would help not-for-profit organisations to deliver much needed services to Queenslanders most in need. “Local groups and organisations are the back bone of our communities,” Mr Bleijie said. “They provide such valuable support so it’s vital that we help these groups when we can.” “The Yugumbir State School, Southport Labrador Cricket Club, Sandstone Point Community Association, QCWA Rosewood and the Lions Club Atherton are among the groups receiving grants and highlight the benefits they provide. “The Lions Club of Atherton will soon have new catering equipment after receiving just over $4,000.” Mr Bleijie said the Gambling Community Benefit Fund provided grants every three months with applications for the next round of funding closing at the end of November 2013. “It is wonderful these groups can continue their work and I thank each and every one of them for their tireless effort and dedication to their local communities. Language app for scenic Railway
Queensland Rail has launched a free app for iPhone and Android technology to assist customers from non-English speaking backgrounds onboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Queensland Rail Executive General Manager Customer Service Martin Ryan said the app would enhance the experience for local and international tourists by providing audio and visual commentary from onboard the train to their mobile devices. “We have developed a unique and interactive app to give customers, in particular overseas visitors, the opportunity to listen to commentary while they sit back, relax and take in the many historical sites onboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway,” Mr Ryan said. “The app is very simple and easy to use and can be downloaded for free by searching ‘KSR’ in the iTunes and Google play stores, and selecting from one of the four available languages including Japanese, Mandarin, German and English. “Once downloaded, customers simply select their departure station (Cairns, Kuranda or Freshwater) and choose from the numbered landmarks for more information. An audio playbar, image and transcript of the commentary will appear. “Customers can scroll through the app browsing information about the World Heritage protected rainforest landmarks from Cairns to Kuranda, learn about the history and making of the Kuranda Scenic Railway as well as be educated on important safety messages for each station.” Mr Ryan said the app was expected to be a big hit with international visitors who made up about three quarters of the Kuranda Scenic Railway market. “More than 350,000 customer journeys were made on the Kuranda Scenic Railway in the last financial year, with about 75 per cent of these from overseas visitors, including our biggest markets Japan, China, Germany, United Kingdom, France, United States and New Zealand. “We expect the new app to encourage even more overseas tourists to visit the Cairns region and to use the service as they now can now travel independently without the need for an interpreter.”
Award for health care centre
Mossman Gorge Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC) was named AGPAL’s Rural & Remote General Practice of the Year in a gala event in Sydney on Friday September 27. Mossman Gorge PHCC, the only community controlled primary health care centre on Cape York, is run by Apunipima Cape York Health Council which provides primary health care to 11 Cape York communities. Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL) is the leading provider of accreditation and related quality improvement services to general practices. Accreditation is based on standards developed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Apunipima Program Manager: Family Health Leeona West says the award was a significant milestone for Apunipima, Mossman Gorge PHCC and most importantly, the people and communities of Cape York. ‘AGPAL accreditation demonstrates our ability to provide the highest quality care. This award means we are providing the highest quality of care possible in a rural and remote setting. This award is significant as we were competing against mainstream organisations from across Australia. To be recognised as the Rural and Remote General Practice of the Year sends a clear message that Aboriginal Health Organisations are providing the best care in the country.’ ‘The people of Cape York deserve the very best care. This award recognises that our service is providing it.’ The health picture in Mossman Gorge has changed significantly since Apunipima took over the community’s small Queensland Health clinic in 2009. ‘Back then, the clinic had paper records and doctors who visited the community for four hours a week. Anecdotally, health outcomes were poor with high rates of smoking, drinking and chronic disease,’ Ms West explains.

Epic bike ride By Boyd Robertson The popular turnout at a marathon mountain biking event at Davies Creek over the weekend has demonstrated the exploding popularity of cycle tourism on the Tableland. A total of 141 riders from Cairns, Townsville and interstate joined local competitors to tackle the FN Epic endurance race at the Davies Creek Trail Complex outside Mareeba on Sunday. Organised by the Mareeba Mountain Goats biking club, the event featured the debut of a brutal 100-kilometre track, featuring more than 2600 metres of uphill, rough terrain and unpredictable conditions. said the club deliberately aimed to create a nigh-impossible ordeal in the new track to attract a higher caliber of competitor as the biking scene on the Tableland continues to grow in popularity. “We designed the course to be one of the hardest marathon races in the country,” he said. “Basically we tried to get the word out there as much as possible – this thing is going to hurt you. We wanted to pull competitors from interstate and the only way to do that is to have a track that stands out.” Jeff Rubach, 30, was the first to conquer the beast, coming in with a time of four hours and 46 minutes. The Townsville rider admitted he was “pretty sore” after the race but was only plan-
ning to take a single day off to recover before resuming training on Tuesday. Agreements between organisations like the Mountain Goats, the Tableland Integrated Mountain Bike Alliance (TIMBA) and the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) have meant the Tableland’s potential as a haven for cycle tourism is now beginning to be realised, with plans in place to join existing trails into a super-network covering the entire region and connecting to coastal tracks. Recent rides through the region by Cycle Queensland and the CAFNEC Far North Wilderness Bike Tour also point to the growing exposure of the region to mountain biking enthusiasts, with local businesses set to benefit from the resulting spike in tourist spending.
Association to go on without Mareeba By Ryan Groube THE Tablelands Junior Soccer Association (TJSA) will begin planning for life without Mareeba following an end of season review on October 10. On September 25, The Express broke the story that the Mareeba United Football Club’s juniors would defect from the TJSA and join the Cairns competition from 2014. The decision is a major blow to the TJSA who face the prospect of beginning the 2014 season with just three clubs – Atherton, Dimbulah and Malanda. TJSA president Raimond Bin said there was no doubt the defection of Mareeba would impact the competition but was confident of having a “viable alternative” in place before next
season. “It is still very early but there is no doubt that losing a club and losing those players will have an effect,” he said. “We have our final TJSA meeting on October 10 and after that will begin looking at our options moving forward.” Mr Bin said planning for 2014 was still at a preliminary stage but an option that would be explored was the prospect of attracting new clubs to the competition. The TJSA won’t consider the option of integrating the remaining clubs in the Cairns competition with Mr Bin saying: “We aren’t prepared for the remaining three clubs to travel to Cairns every week”. Soccer fan and concerned parent Trevor Sorenson said he wasn’t happy with Mareeba’s
decision and that it would be hard to sustain a junior football competition on the Tableland without them. “There is a lot of concern from parents about what this decision [by Mareeba] is going to mean for the rest of the competition,” he said. “[There is a fear that] this is the inevitable death knell of [junior] soccer on the Atherton Tablelands.” Mareeba made the decision after junior membership collapsed from 195 in 2011 to a record low of 95 this year. Mareeba United Football Club president Alex Srhoj said joining the Cairns competition would offer members a “level of stability and structure”. FNQ Football general manager Duncan Sims failed to respond to The Express’ calls for comment.

Trees removed from street
By Boyd Robertson
The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is nearly finished removing dangerous palm trees in Atherton’s Main Street after a resident narrowly escaped being crushed by one in early September. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long told The Express that the trees “requiring removal for safety-related reasons” are planned to be removed by the end of this week. Cr Lee Long also moved to calm fears that the incident in September would prompt council to take out all the trees on Main Street. “Council has only removed those trees posing a potential safety hazard and will be monitoring the status and condition of the remaining palm trees. “Palm trees have been removed only from Main Street, Atherton.” The TRC moved quickly to remove the tree, and council is now considering how to replace the removed trees. Atherton’s councillor Peter Hodge said that the removal had gone smoothly without complaints from businesses or residents. “All reports I have received have been positive,” he said. “There have been no negative comments and I believe that most people realise this has been done to protect community safety.”
TRAVEL DIARY with Uli Lenitschek EIN PROSIT!!
Dear Readers, It’s that time of the year when you raise your glasses to toast all the good things in life, and believe me there is lots to drink and be merry about. Autumn in Germany is the time of many Beer Festivals and the queen of them all is the biggest party on this planet - the Oktoberfest. A friend of mine described it as “the Ekka on Steroids”. As soon as you walk into the grounds - known as the “Wiesn” - you are grabbed by the party atmosphere and you can’t help but have the time of your life! I have tried to fight it, but it is impossible. Time just flies and before you know it you wake up in your bed and wonder what happened??? Fun, fun, fun... that is what happened, and what it’s all about! The weather has cooled right down now and it’s time to dig out the winter woollies and get fit for the ski season. Autumn is also the time to sit back and watch nature paint its yearly oil paintings as the leaves change to auburn, red, orange and yellow. What an amazing kaleidoscope - and what an incredible backdrop to go hiking in! We have been here19 months now and have had the privilege of showing many friends around our region. It is so rewarding getting the positive feedback and hearing it has been the highlight of their European experience. Bookings have now closed for our Christmas tour and I am pleased to say that we will also be running it again next year. If you missed out this year please get in early and register your interest. It will be an experience of a lifetime. Let us spoil you in Europe, and come and visit whilst we are still here. Focus on councils By Ryan Groube DELEGATES of councils from across the north gathered in Cooktown last week for the North Queensland Local Government Association conference. Local Government Minister David Crisafulli was a key note speaker at the conference which ran over three days from October 2-4 and included a visit to the Hope Vale banana farm. Mr Crisafulli said the establishment of the farm by the Hope Vale council was a perfect example of how modern day councils needed to adapt and change in order to survive. Speaking with The Express after the conference, Mr Crisafulli said: “Delivery of service, economic development opportunities and efficiency. If councils can do these three things well that is the model
for sustainable local government.” “Councils need to be having a good look at what services they are providing and if they need to be in that space. They also need to be on the lookout for economic development opportunities. “The Hope Vale banana farm is as good as an example of a council taking an economic opportunity as I have seen. It is a real industry, not a bull shit government funded industry, that has led to the creation of real jobs with a real market at the end of it.” Jenny Jensen was the Tablelands Regional Council’s representative at the conference. Cr Jensen said the key message she took out of Mr Crisafulli’s address was that local councils would increasingly have to rely less on funding from the State Government.

Electricity trial means better supply for homes New electricity network technology recently trialled on the Tableland is set to pave the way for changes in how rural electricity supply networks power homes in the future. Ergon Energy has been working with customers to test a new battery and control technology that connects directly to its electricity network, called the Grid Utility Support System (GUSS). The GUSS units that were trialled successfully near Yungaburra and have been relocated to a section of network near the small township of Laura. Minister for Energy Mark McArdle said: “GUSS is an exceptional concept that works by charging batteries overnight when electricity use is at its lowest and discharging them during the day when energy use peaks”. “The primary purpose is to improve the quality of supply while reducing investment and operating costs on Ergon’s extensive rural electricity networks.” The system could help more than 26,000 customers in regional Queensland who operate on Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) lines. They could Mr McArdle said electricity demand had increased as customers lifestyles improved, placing strain on the capacity these networks could deliver during peak times. Ergon’s chief executive Ian McLeod said GUSS units would be deployed over the next two years, delivering significant savings on remote networks as well as better reliability and significant future applications.

Charity festival for Indie Rose By Boyd Robertson
A charity festival at the Speewah Tavern over the weekend has helped raise funds for the family of toddler Indie Rose Taurima. The inaugural Speewah Annual Charity Fair on October 5-6 featured cake and photo competitions, a maskand-tie night, live music and a jumping castle for kids. An estimated 400 people attended the event over the course of the weekend. The fair was organised by tavern manager Jamie-Lee Hogan, who wanted to “bring the community together for some fun and a good cause.”
“It’s been a pretty successful first event,” Ms Hogan said. “We’ve had a lot of support – including from the local firies who turned up in their truck, threw out lollies for the kids and sprayed them with the hose. “There’s been heaps of people that have been willing to help.” Indie, whose well-publicised battle with leukaemia energised the Tableland community to donate thousands of dollars for her treatment and support, has recently been declared disease-free – but still faces years of checkups and monitoring in major hospitals. The Indiestructables team, who ran on Indie’s behalf in this year’s Great Wheelbarrow Race, also
helped put on the event. A performance by the Kuranda Stars cheerleading squad added to the festivities, as did the presentation of a $1,200 cheque from the Speewah Hotshots. Even the Mareeba Workers Club made an appearance with a bike run all the way from their clubhouse. The amount of money raised by the event is still being calculated. Ms Hogan said she already had a few ideas for next year’s fair. “We’re still going to have it on the long weekend but we’re probably going to move the cake competitions to Sunday, just so everyone can have Saturday to make their cakes instead of trying to do it after work,” she said.
Trick or treat? There is a new drug on the block and you will find it in nearly everyone’s pantry. It grows all around the tablelands and its called sugar. Lets look at the numbers: Its takes roughly 100kg of sugar cane to make 1kg of refined sugar. The average Australian consumes 40kg per year, which is nearly double your flight baggage allowance. Therefore it takes 4 tons of sugar cane to satisfy one person’s consumption habits. In recent years sugar consumption has tripled worldwide and the effects on our health are starting to show. In a recent issue of the scientific journal Nature1, scientists are suggesting that sugar should be regulated just like alcohol and tobacco due to its addictive properties. How is it that we have become so hooked on something as seemingly as innocent as sugar? The answer is processed food. If a food product has more then a couple of ingredients, it has usually been processed. For example: breakfast cereals, breads, sauces, seasonings, dips, dairy, juices and sausages nearly always display sugar on the ingredients label. It makes the food taste better and because of its addictive qualities, you consume more of it. Other then the obvious risks of obesity, sugar reeks havoc with how efficiently you can turn food into energy and puts you at risk of: • Type 2 diabetes
The Kuranda Stars cheerleading squad (above) gave a performance at the first Speewah Charity Fair, which aimed to raise funds for the support of Indie Rose Taurima (right).
• Insomnia • Decreased immune function • Mood swings and depression • Behavioural problems, especially in children Here are some quick and easy tips to help curb your intake of sugar: • Become a sugar detective! Read the labels on food. Sugar is often also called corn syrup, dextrose, maltose or any word that ends in ‘ose’ • When you’re craving sugar, reach for fruits such as bananas, strawberries and pears • Slowly phase out processed sugar by replacing them with alternatives such as honey or stevia. Not perfect but better • Often the amount of sugar in a recipe can be halved without any real change in taste. Alternatives such as mashed fruit & spices such as cinnamon can help add sweetness • Throw out all the sugary snacks in the house & don’t replace them • Eat regularly so blood sugar levels remain stable • Drink at least 1L of water for every 30kg of body weight because one of the first signs of dehydration is hunger.

Channel camp kids reunion By Ryan Groube As the channel irrigation system which serves as the lifeblood of the Tableland agricultural industry sprung up around them, a generation of ‘Camp Kids’ spent a simple and carefree childhood. From the early 1950s to mid 1970s, thousands of workers were employed by the Irrigation and Water Supply Commission to build what is today known as the Mareeba-Dimbulah channel irrigation scheme. Satellite camps in the towns of Tinaroo, Mutchilba, Walkamin and Paddy’s Green served as a base for construction of more than 200 kilometres of predominately gravity fed channels. While their parents were away at work, the ‘Camp Kids’ spent their time at school, nicking off with watermelons grown on nearby farms, swimming (illegally) in the channel, building cubby houses down the creek and playing backyard cricket. Among those camp kids, most of who are now in their 50s and 60s were Allan Pollard and Bev Haines. Ms Haines spent her primary school years at the Mutchilba camp before her father, who was a storeman responsible for ordering building materials, was transferred to Walkamin. Mr Pollard spent time in all four camps with his mother and father – a maintenance worker and fitter and welder – before he began working on the construction of the channel. The pair, who met at the Mutchilba camp, are organising a reunion for the
‘Camp Kids’ on October 26 and 27 at Kerribee Park. It will be the third reunion in as many years for the ‘Camp Kids’ after a small “get together” was held at George Wallace’s property in 2011 and about 80 people attended in 2012. Mr Pollard said the years spent together largely “amusing ourselves” had formed a tight beyond between the ‘Camp Kids’. “If you’d have lived in one of these camps you’d know what the bond was like. It was a simple life but a good one. You’d finish school and go walking or fishing, you could just walk and walk for miles,” Mr Pollard said. Ms Haines said: “The other kids grew up as our brothers and sisters. We were one big family. We didn’t have much but we didn’t feel like we had missed out on anything either”. The pair said the story of the ‘Camp Kids’ formed a significant and colourful chapter in the history of the Tableland. At Christmas, many families would take up some extra work on tobacco farms picking and stringing with the youngsters earning up to 10 cents for each stick of tobacco that was strung. Home for many families were 30 feet pre-fabricated buildings with a bedroom at each end with about 12 feet in the middle serving as the kitchen, dining room and lounge. The reunion will begin at 1pm with a barbeque to be held in the early evening, an overnight camp and a breakfast the following day. For more info, contact Allan on 4092 1340 or Bev on 4095 5130.

Community CELEBRATIONS
Bendigo Bank supports Rural Fire Brigades
Monthly catch-up with the mAREEBA lions club Mareeba Lions want to hear from you. What would you like to see the Mareeba Lions Club doing in your community? Please give us your feedback. Yes Lions collect and recycle used spectacles, but Lions are also seeking hearing aids. In the past only the newer over the ear type were collected but Lions have received a request form Cambodia and Bali for the older in the ear style of aid too. If you have any old hearing aids then Lions will be only too pleased to recycle them too. The annual Lioness Pink Ribbon Garden Party held in John and Delsi DeLai’s garden proved to be another great day out for the ladies and raised $10,000.00 for the Queensland Cancer Council. Lions and Lioness recently joined forces to cater for 690 hungry bike riders who were enjoying the ride from Mission Beach to Port Douglas. Tents, generators and eskies were all needed as the site was situated 30k from town with no facilities. Well done to all concerned. October will see the International Board of Directors of Lions International meet for the first time in Australia at Port Douglas. Many activities have been planned to coincide with this important event including World Sight Day in Mossman with free eye screening at the primary schools and town hall. Lions and Lioness from around the North have been busy planning the event down to the last detail. Invasive procedures for removing non-melanoma skin cancers such as freezing or surgery may soon be a thing of the past. A previous Lions Medical Research Foundation Research Fellow and Queensland researcher, Dr Graham Leggatt, may have found a new, less invasive way to treat the disease, which affects approx. 133,100 people in the state each year. Graham, within the University of Queensland Diamantina Institute, based at the Translational Research Institute, is investigating anti-cancer immune cells as an alternative therapeutic option for non-melanoma skin cancer.
His work is being supported by a $100,000 Cancer Council Queensland 2013 research grant. Dr Leggatt is thrilled with the announcement. “This research is particularly relevant in our country and here in Queensland, where we have the highest rates of skin cancer in the World,” he said. “As a result, non-melanoma skin cancer, which includes both squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia with approximately two per cent of the population treated for the cancer in 2002.Current methods for treatment can be physically invasive and leave scarring. A gentler, less-invasive method of treatment would be beneficial for the long-term physical and mental recovery of the patient.” Dr Graham Leggatt (past LMRF Research Fellow) Research Leader, Qld Diamantina Institute. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion. Fellowship, Good times, Meeting people, Building lasting friendships, Service to the community, Learning new skills, Leadership and personal development - these are some of the reasons we are the Lions. If you want to be part of this great humanitarian organisation contact membership chairman Gilbert Teitzel on 4092 8066. Lions meet in Mareeba at the Mareeba RSL at 6.30 pm on the first and third Wednesday of the month.
Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank has provided $13,500 to support the purchase of a new Rural Fire Brigade vehicle for use across the northern Tablelands region. Warren McNamara from the Davies Creek Rural Fire Brigade is greatly appreciative of the funding. “This generous grant from the Mareeba Community Bank will make a real difference to the various Rural Fire Brigades in the area for the upcoming fire season in the event of wild fires,” said Mr McNamara. “Rural Fire Brigades are run by volunteers and do a tremendous job, said Community Bank chairman Mr Gilbert
Tetizel, and we are proud to be able to support them and the work they do in protecting our communities”. The light attack vehicle can access many difficult areas in the event of wild fires and can also be set up as an incident control base. “This vehicle is able to respond quickly to a fire event from Dimbulah to Biboorah to Speewah, and will significantly improve the safety of outlying communities in rural areas”. “Due to the lack of rain during the winter we are anticipating a severe fire season over the coming months and having this additional vehicle will greatly enhance our capabilities,” said Mr McNamara.

GET READY QUEENSLAND WEEK 14th - 20th October
GET READY QUEENSLAND WEEK 14th - 20th October, is an endorsed Queensland Government strategy to position our state as the most disaster-resilient in Australia. Funding has been made available to assist Local Councils to facilitate locally driven events that focus on the individual and community aspects of resilience with a series of events taking place across the Tablelands Regional Council area during this week. These events will have a focus on individual preparedness with resources and information readily available for community members to assist them with this task. Over the last two years Tablelands Regional Council has been working very closely with the community to develop and implement Community All Hazard Disaster Plans. These plans are now in place in Chillagoe, Dimbulah, Herberton, Kuranda, Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Mt Garnet, Ravenshoe, Tinaroo / Kairi and Yungaburra. The overall aim of these plans is to enable communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disaster events and to enhance communication between local communities and the Tablelands Local Disaster Coordination Centre. Authorities can be overwhelmed after a disaster event, so it is important that individuals and communities can help themselves, especially in those immediate hours after the threat has passed. These All Hazard Disaster Plans empower local communi-
ties by enabling its members to understand local hazards, their needs in a disaster and their ability to prioritise locally what needs to be done. They also provide an opportunity for building community spirit and connectedness and have a great deal of suggestions for individual and community preparedness. The plans identify a Community Disaster Coordinator who will be a point of contact for the Local Disaster Coordinator and the community which will allow for response and recovery efforts to be actioned more effectively and efficiently and enable two way communication to be more streamlined. Emergency Service workers and community members involved in this work have been very proactive to ensure that their communities can be prepared as possible for disaster events that may occur and are involved in many of the activities throughout GET READY QUEENSLAND WEEK. One of the major focuses of this week will be education on the UHF CB Channel 10 alternative communication option for our community members. Normal communication channels such as landlines, mobile phone networks and the internet, while often very robust, can fail during or immediately after a major disaster as happened through the harsh experience of Cyclones Larry and Yasi. This has lead to the development of the UHF-CB Channel 10 emergency community communications network for the Atherton Tablelands. The UHF Citizen’s Band radio
SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITES FOR GET READY QUEENSLAND WEEK - 14th to 20th OCTOBER, 2013 TABLELANDS REGIONAL COUNCIL
network is a potential alternative communication system as it is as it is accessible to the general community without the need for a license, so it’s widely available and relatively inexpensive. UHF-CB Channel 10 has been designated as the alternative initial contact for use in a disaster event, or when standard communications such as landlines and mobiles have failed. This is not meant to replace normal communication channels, but to provide a backup or an alternative system if ever required. It is envisaged that, in the event of complete communication failure or post disaster everyone with a two-way radio needs to be listening out on UHF-CB Channel 10 as the initial contact channel as they maybe able to assist those in need or inform others of potential hazards. Tablelands Regional Council is promoting the use of UHF CB Channel 10 as a community led self-help initiative. We can not guarantee that assistance will be provided but if we are all prepared to help
each other, who know how much positive difference it could make. In some communities, the initial contact channel MAY be monitored by members of Community Disaster Teams and other volunteer groups willing to assist during disaster events. Through GET READY QUEENSLAND WEEK the Community Disaster Teams of Mt Garnet, Malanda and Yungaburra will be undertaking a community exercise that will identify the value of this initiative as well as identify black spots where further assistance may be required. The Community All Hazard Disaster Plans and the Resilient Communications Plan are available on our website at: http:// www.trc.qld.gov. au/ disaster- management/ disaster-plans.

GET READY QUEENSLAND WEEK 14th to 20th october 2013
Ergon ready for storm season By Ryan Groube Ergon Energy is well prepared for the upcoming storm season with aged assets being replaced and additional generators purchased. Energy Minister Mark McArdle toured Ergon Energy’s Townsville depot to review preparations for North Queensland ahead of the storm season. Mr McArdle said the company has been working hard to maintain its vast network across regional Queensland in preparation for summer by inspecting, maintaining and replacing aged assets. “Ergon Energy’s network faces its greatest test during the extremes of summer. Invariably it experiences its highest demand for power and greatest exposure to significant weather events such as storms, possible flooding and cyclones,” Mr McArdle
said. “Ergon’s fleet of mobile generators has been boosted with six new generator sets on top of 13 added last year.” Mr McArdle said he was impressed with Ergon’s preparedness through extensive network maintenance and reliability programs. “This is about reducing the number of unplanned outages, and subsequent impact to customers and improve response times before the storm season,” he said. “Ergon has continued its vegetation management program through winter and spring to ensure trees are kept away from powerlines. Ergon have also significantly increased the amount of poles, cross arms, powerlines, and other hardware essential available in stock. “The network in major centres is reviewed for storm season – substations are checked
and key transmission and distribution lines inspected while regional emergency management plans are updated and Ergon’s employees are continually trained and tested to respond safely and effectively to emergency situations.” Mr McArdle said Ergon Energy has also been making improvements with customer engagement in preparation for summer. “Ergon’s National Contact Centre is recruiting an additional 25 staff to respond to customer calls and customers can expect to see targeted safety and energy-use messages throughout summer,” he said. “Realistically Ergon Energy cannot guarantee to keep the lights on during cyclones and other extreme weather events, but it’s prepared and ready.”

MOVIES:
RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS...
There are six films screening this week at Mareeba's Rising Sun Movie Lounge, with two new movies opening tomorrow Over the school holidays the new cinema has hosted a feast of the latest in family and children's entertainment. With the end of the holidays, there’s more on screen for the older age groups, but there's still plenty to keep the littlies happy and fascinated.
One of this season's most successful animations hits the Rising Sun big screen from Thursday – TURBO is a fun filled experience that will captivate both the young and not so young. 2 GUNS starts in Mareeba on the same day as the rest of Australia. This exciting first run thriller stars two of Hollywood's hottest action men, Denzil Washington and Mark Wahlberg in a terrific adrenalin
charged film. Also on screen is the comedy thriller caper RED 2, starring Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins. We can certainly recommend this one for its pure entertainment value and top acting. If you want to laugh out loud, GROWN UPS 2 is just the tonic you need – It's hilarious and pure fun for all ages.
2 GUNS –
Robert Trench, an undercover DEA agent, takes advantage of gunman Michael Stigman's idea to rob a bank to bust him and a mob boss. However, it proves too successful with much more money seized than anticipated with Trench's forces not stopping the getaway. Complicating things still more, Stigman turns out to be a Naval Intelligence agent who shoots Trench and takes the money. The interservice debacle suddenly finds Trench and Stigman in a bloody web of corrupt clandestine rivalries as they are hunted, blackmailed and isolated for the money on both sides of the law. Now, the fugitives must work together to find a way out of this situation with no one to turn to but themselves.
TURBO –
A freak accident might just help an everyday garden snail (voice of Ryan Reynolds) achieve his biggest dream: winning the Indy 500. Review by Louise Keller: I felt like cheering as the turbocharged garden snail navigates precariously between screeching, speeding racing car wheels on the track of the Indy 500 in the rousing climactic finale of this upbeat, quirky and utterly charming family 3D animation. It's a cute idea to juxtapose a speed-crazy garden snail onto a race track and director David Soren has woven together an endearing tale about the ultimate underdog for whom the stars are the limit. Filled with inventive ideas, wacky concepts and characters so colourful they are off the rainbow chart, Turbo is a breath of fresh air guaranteed to delight youngsters and adults alike.
RED 2 –
Retired CIA black-ops agent Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) reunites his team of elite operatives - including Marvin (John Malkovich), deadly sharp-shooter Victoria (Helen Mirren) and Frank's beloved Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker) - for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device. They come up against an army of relentless assassins, ruthless terrorists and power-crazed government officials, all eager to get their hands on the nextgeneration weapon. The mission takes them to Paris, London and Moscow, where they cross paths with Frank's seductive former flame Katja FAR NORTH (Catherine Zeta-Jones), as well as Bailey (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant scientist from Frank's past. Outgunned and outmanned, they have only their cunning, their old-school skills, and each other to rely on.
GROWN UPS 2 –
After having the greatest time of his life three summers ago, Lenny (Adam Sandler), decides he wants to move his family back to his hometown and have them grow up with his gang of childhood friends and their kids. But between old bullies, new bullies, schizophrenic bus drivers, drunk cops on skis, psycho grade school girlfriends and 400 costumed party crashes he finds out that sometimes crazy follows you.
PLANES –
Dusty (voice of Dane Cook) is a cropdusting plane who dreams of competing in a famous aerial race. But he is hopelessly afraid of heights. With the support of his mentor Skipper (Stacy Keach) and a host of new friends - but with hurdles thrown his way by enemies – Dusty sets off to make his dreams come true.

Rare frog re-found in Far North Qld By Ryan Groube A frog species thought to be extinct has been rediscovered in the far north as scientists embark on a bid to rebuild the population. Twenty-two years ago the Armoured Mistfrog (Litoria lorica) vanished from the rainforests of Far North Queensland, and was not seen again until rediscovered in a rainforest stream in the remote mountains west of the Daintree in 2008. After five years of research, James Cook University doctors Conrad Hoskin and Robert Puschendorf determined the rediscovered population (between 500 and 1000 adults) is the last remaining. In a bold move to secure the future of the species a Queensland first frog translocation was performed. On September 3 and 4, 40 Armoured Mistfrogs – 20 males and 20 females – were moved to a new site about four kilometres upstream. Doctor Hoskin said after a team includ-
ing representatives from the Department Of Environment and Heritage Protection, the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, and the Western Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation executed the translocation. “No species is safe as a single population when disease or other threats could suddenly wipe out that population, and hence the entire species,” Dr Hoskin said. “Having rediscovered this species we don’t want to lose it a second time.” Of the frogs that were moved, 17 females carried eggs, which will hopefully be laid at the new site over coming months. Doctor Hoskin said the success of the move would depend on the frog’s ability to survive and more importantly to breed. If the population is successful the group will consider relocation. The project was funded through the Australian Government’s National Environmental Research Program Tropical Ecosystems Hub.

BOMBS AWAY:
Adams breaks century at Kerribee By Boyd Robertson Mareeba Bandits coach Robert “Bomber” Adams has won the admiration of his team after chalking up 103 runs during the first half a two-day match against Cairns Norths at Kerribee Park on Sunday. The veteran walked off to back-

slaps and cheers after breaking the century. The Bandits finished up 7 for 282 on the day. Apart from Adams the high-scoring batters were Danny Shaw with 62 runs, Ben Turner with 36, team captain Brendan Payne on 23 and Cameron MacPherson on 18 not out.
The second wicket partnership of 70 runs was shared between Payne and Adams. Shaw and Turner shared the fifth wicket partnership, also of 70 runs. Club member Robbie Shaw described the day’s play as satisfactory and praised Adams and other leading batsmen for their efforts.
“All up it was a pretty good day,” Shaw said. “We had a solid performance from all our batsmen. “Bomber got out there and destroyed them which was awesome, then Danny took over with and the rest carried on from there.” The match also marked the re-
turn of former Bandits player Callum McPherson from a 10-year stint in Ayr. The second half of the match will pick up at 1pm at Kerribee Park this Sunday. Shaw took the opportunity to call for Mareeba supporters to turn out for the game.
Speedy karter Leigh wins at Proserpine finals By Boyd Robertson A Mareeba go-kart driver has zoomed into victory at state finals in Proserpine. Leigh Naylor, 21, took out first place in the Senior National Pros class at the Queensland Sprint Kart Titles at the Whitsundays Motorsport Track in Proserpine on September 24-29. Naylor blitzed through four races to win the title, including three qualifying heats before the final race, which challenged him and competitors to complete 16 laps of the 1.5-kilometre track, often reaching speeds of up to 90 and 100 kilometres per hour. Naylor, a member of the Mareeba Karting Club said he was “very satisfied” with
the win. “I’ve never had a win on this level before,” he said. “It’s something I’ve always aimed for and to finally win it definitely brings a big sense of accomplishment. Naylor took a Europeandesigned ‘Tony Kart’ to the finals, with a customselected motor chosen for maximum power-to-weight ratio. “Every motor has to be pretty much the same according to race rules, however there’s always a quicker motor but you have to keep thinking about how much they weigh,” he said. “At this level it comes down to a smooth style, especially with the hard compound tyres you have in this class – if you’re not smooth
you’re going to miss out on tenths of a second which will be the difference between first and tenth place, it’s that fast. “The speeds we are going at on these tracks are pretty intense – it’s fine going at 100 kilometres per hour in a car but when you’re right down there at bitumen level in a kart it’s very different.” Naylor, who has been karting for 12 years, said he is now looking forward to more challenging events in southern cities next year. Other drivers from the Mareeba Karting Club at the finals included Brodie Davis and Caleum KipperIkime in Cadets and Matt Want in the Junior Clubman class.

Crad Evans slips past Bulls Reserves By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba United Football Club’s reserves side has lost 4-3 to Townsville-based Mundingburra Aitkenvale Olympic in the battle for the Crad Evans Shield at Pennell Field in Cairns on October 5. Olympic dominated majority of the game, establishing a 4-0 lead by half time. A valiant late-game rally by the Bulls Reserves with 25 minutes left on the clock gave Mareeba supporters hope that the game might swing back
but it was to no avail. The Reserves, despite blitzing the Cairns district premiership, came home from the inter-city showdown empty-handed. Coach Sacsha Stankovich said he was not disappointed in his team’s effort. “I think the first 45 minutes we were maybe a little bit asleep there but I can’t ask for more than what the boys gave tonight,” he said. “I’m actually happy with it – I’m proud of boys even in the first half. We had six chances to their four, they

scored three and we scored none. Stankovich pointed to the threeweek gap between the Reserve’s premiership final and the Crad Evans Shield as possible causes for a lack of urgency in his players. “Honestly I think if you take three weeks off from playing soccer it’s going to have an effect,” he said. “We tried to keep our momentum going but maybe it hurt us, maybe we were just a little bit flat.” Bulls president Alex Srhoj was also positive and vowed Mareeba would return to contest the Shield in
2014. “The boys definitely showed the character toward the end, it was a pretty entertaining match - in halftime Sasha had a good talk to them and they came out different in the second half,” he said. “Most of the guys will be back next year and then they will do it all over again – its definitely a learning experience for some of the boys.” Srhoj also pointed to the upcoming Bulls presentation ceremony on October 19 as something to look forward to.
“It’s definitely going to be a big night, this year has definitely been a major step forward for the club and there’s going to be some major awards presented. “We’re actually going to be inducting a fourth player into the Hall of Fame and everyone is looking forward to coming back for a bigger and better 2014.” “I’d like to extend my thanks out to the supporters and the players, we’ve really showed that’s it’s not just about one team, it’s about one club.”

Fast and furious at Mareeba Speedway By Boyd Robertson Thrills and spills abounded at the Mareeba Motor Club Racing regular meet on Sunday as the high-octane action took its toll on the drivers and machines alike. Crashes and mechanical failure meant several drivers retired from the speedway with their aspirations for victory dashed and their vehicles in need of repair. C Grade driver Chad Scott kicked the day’s demolition derby off with a heavy impact into shoulder during the fourth turn of the last lap of his category’s final. The hot-blooded young drivers in Junior Grade “kept bashing each other around,” according to club secretary Kerrie Vievers.
Junior driver Andie Wallace suffered the same fate as Scott, hitting the fourth turn at speed during Heat 4 and ending up with an injured arm, while Brodie Davis had to be towed off the track after colliding with Ashley Hardy in Heat 5. Although A Grade was devoid of crashes, Graham Jorgenson was forced to retire with mechanical failure on the first lap of Heat 1. The high-energy Formula 500 sprint races weren’t to be outdone in the rough and tumble, with Ben Pittiglio and Jarred Desmares spinning out early in Heat 1. Angelo Tudini took out first for the A Grade category while
Lucy Reed dominated B Grade. Michael Wilkinson cleaned up C Grade while Madalyn Wallace won in Junior Grade. Heavy hitters Ian Wallace and Jarrod Vievers were both sidelined by mechanical failure after previous races in Cairns and Mareeba, respectively. Glen Underwood won the feature race while Ryan Skennar came first in both the Formula 500 and overall points for the day. Kerrie Vievers described the day as being full of “good tough racing.” The club’s next meet on November 3 will be their last for the year ahead of the presentation night on November 23.

“Fantastic” turnout for Dimbulah trophy meet By Boyd Robertson A big turnout at the Dimbulah Horse and Pony Club’s Trophy Weekend on October 5-6 has left organisers smiling. A full total of 95 horses and riders from all over the region attended the event to compete in 14 different events across nine age groups. Events included jackpot barrel and bending races, snakes and ladders, skudda ho, snakes and ladders and double figure eights. Live band Kurdaz provided extra entertainment, along with an outdoor cinema after the sun set, while the club put on a barbecue to keep riders and spectators fed. Cayde Miller won the Under 6 division, while Georgia Simpson
prevailed on points in the 7-8 Year Olds. In the 9-10 Year Olds Kelly O’Shea took out first, also reaching the Highest Points tally in the entire Juniors category. Rhyanna Miller won in the 1112 Year Olds division and Olivia Anderson came first for the 13-14 Year Olds. Keelan Seagren finished up first for the 15-17 Year Olds category while Nicole Gava won in the 1829 division, also taking out Highest Points in Seniors. Tracey Leet won the 30 and Over category. Nicole Gava also won the Senior Jackpot with a time of 18.78 seconds, while Jason O’Shea won the Jackpot Barrel Race with a time of 20.75 seconds. In the Jackpot Bending catego-
ry, Sharni Findlay took out first for Juniors with a time of 14.55 seconds and Gary Jerome won in the Senior division on 12.34 seconds. Dimbulah Horse and Pony Club secretary Hannah Simpson said the weekend had been a great success. “It’s been so fantastic, we’ve had such great support from our sponsors and the parents of all the riders,” she said. “The kids were happy, we didn’t have any major dramas and everyone went home happy. “Without that support of the parents, sponsors and our volunteers, none of this would have been possible.” The Trophy Weekend was the club’s last riding event of the year ahead of its Christmas party, where overall club winners for the year will be determined on points.

Commissioner warns one punch can kill By Ryan Groube A top-down decision to immediately send off rugby league players who throw a punch on a football field has been welcomed by Queensland’s top cop. Queensland Police Service Commissioner Ian Stewart spoke to The Express at the PCYC Cup on September 29 about the importance of stamping out intentional violence. Commissioner Stewart said the rule would not only help change the culture of rugby league on a national level but also in grass roots competitions. “Violence for violence’s sake can never be accepted,” he said. “Rugby League is a contact sport that is a wonderful char-
acter builder that is tough and is hard but importantly it is played in controlled conditions. “Intentional violence has no part in any sport and isn’t a true part of rugby league at any level of competition.” The NRL announced a zero tolerance policy to punching in the middle of year following NSW Blues enforcer Paul Gallen’s cheap shot on Maroons front rower Nate Myles in the opening State of Origin fixture on June 5. Under the new rules, any player who throws a punch will be sent off for 10 minutes and face the prospect of being charged by the match review panel. The rules have also been applied in local league matches. On September 28 and 29,

six teams from across the far north travelled to Davies Park, Mareeba for the inaugural PCYC Cup. Weipa won the Under 17s round-robin competition after beating Hope Vale in the final, while Mareeba 2 took out the playoff for third by belting Pormpuraaw. Commissioner Stewart said he was delighted that the weekend that been played fairly and without any all-in brawls. “This weekend of rugby league has showcased the best of the sport,” he said. “It was tough it was competitive and it was fair and every player showed tremendous sportsmanship.” Mr Stewart said he would love to come back to the PCYC Cup again in 2014.
