Why should we pay?

A Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) plan to get Mareeba Shire ratepayers to pay for a $1.3 million office block in Atherton has backfired.

On April 3, Local Government Minister David Crisafulli ruled that the cost of the TRC purchasing the building at 51 Mabel Street, Atherton did not qualify as a de-amalgamation expense.

Mareeba Shire ratepayers will however be forced to pay $267,837 to cover a portion of the

cost of the TRC acquiring and refurbishing the building. Mr Crisafulli said he did not feel the TRC had to purchase the new building and could have found other options to house staff transferring post de-amalgamation.

“I am convinced there were other options that could have been used without purchasing another building,” he said.

TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long has slammed the Minister’s decision as “extremely unfair” and that Mareeba Shire ratepayers should have been made

to cover at least half the cost of the building.

“During the first TRC so much was centralised in Mareeba at a great cost to the ratepayer.

We were aware that Mareeba Shire was to pay all costs related to de-amalgamation,” she said.

“This is a huge blow to us as we enter our budget deliberation timeframe. We are now in a position where we have to find more than $1 million for a building that if we had stayed amalgamated we probably wouldn’t have purchased.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore welcomed the decision.

“It is gratifying that the Minister has clearly recognised the [TRC’s] decision to purchase the building, without consultation with either the Mareeba Shire or the transfer committee, was completely out of order,” he said. “The Minister’s recognition of this fact relieves the ratepayers of the Mareeba Shire what had been proposed as having to pay half the cost of the building.”

New doctor in the region

The easy-going lifestyle of the Tableland and a young family has attracted a new doctor to the region.

Danae Cole, 30, has been working as a registrar at Byrnes Street Medical Centre since January.

Having married a local lad – Adam Cole, the general manager at Atherton’s John Cole Toyota – the couple welcomed baby boy Carter to the world 13 months ago.

Doctor Cole will complete a year in Mareeba before being required to finish her training to become a GP at another clinic, with Doctor Cole’s preference to remain on the Tableland.

“My plan is to stay on the Tableland in the long-term,” she said.

“The requirements of my training mean that I can only do one year here but after I am fully qualified I would like to come back [to Mareeba].”

Doctor Cole was born in Atherton but completed her six year medical course at James Cook University in Townsville.

For the past three years, Doctor Cole has been working at Cairns Hospital where she completed her internship as well as two years as a resident.

At the end of 2015, Doctor Cole will be eligible to sit her GP primary and, if successful, will become a fully qualified General Practitioner.

She said she was excited at the oppor-

tunity of being a general practitioner at a small country practice like Brynes Street Medical Centre.

“You get a more varied scope of practice in regional areas. People here can’t just run out and see a cardiologist or and endocrinologist,” she said.

“Here we are far enough away to see really interesting cases before they [patients] are funnelled to Cairns but we are also close enough to have access and support from the amazing specialists in the area.”

Doctor Cole said she expected to have a busy year with the town’s ageing population susceptible to “a lot of age related health issues”.

She also said that people on the Tableland were often guilty of letting their health deteriorate for too long before seeing a doctor.

“You do see a lot more advanced disease up here,” she said.

“A lot of people leave seeking treatment until the last minute and by that time it is hard to catch up because the disease is so far advanced.”

Doctor Cole also said that the clinic did receive its fair share of “well worriers” and urged people to use common sense when determining the need for an appointment.

She said the local community had been welcoming of her since she began working at the clinic and that she was “loving” the new job.

Young Chillagoe singer heads to Tamworth A young Tableland songbird is taking her first steps into the world of professional country music all the while juggling academic responsibilities.

Chillagoe girl Rebecca ‘Becci’ Nethery, 17, headed to country music hotspot Tamworth in New South Wales on Monday to record her first EP with producer Greg Williams from the Australian Academy of Country Music.

Becci will perform two covers of unreleased tracks and two original songs for the EP, which is planned to be released in CD form early next year.

The originals are titled Walk Away and Wrote This One For You. Becci described her creative process in writing the songs as both incorporating experiences from her life and using her imagination.

“I like to tell a story with my music,” she said.

“Walk Away is a sadder song about someone whose partner left them earlier and has now returned but isn’t really there emotionally and is sort of just playing around – in the end she says ‘you can go, I will keep my guitar’.

serious, it’s about a old man busking on the street describing a song he wrote for his wife, it’s a bit more fun and makes you smile when you hear it.”

Becci, who has performed many times around the Tableland since she was very young, said she was looking forward to entering the professional music world but was also trying to balance her music with her Year 12 studies at St Monica’s College in Cairns.

“I’m definitely excited to really start getting into the industry, I know it’s going to be hard but if I can do anything related to music with my life, it’ll be worth it,” she said. “Trying to do schoolwork and practice songs at the same time can be really hard – sometimes Greg and I will link up on Skype so I can show him the latest progress on one of the songs and I have to tell him ‘I’m sorry I just didn’t have time to practice’, but we’re getting there slowly.”

Becci’s mum Kerry Nethery accompanied her to Tamworth and said recording the EP would be an important first step for her daughter.

By Ryan Groube Council has raised concern that a State Government fire sale of large blocks of unused land in Mareeba could limit the town’s future growth.

A six-hectare block of residentially zoned land along the Mareeba Connection Road west of “The Edge” residential subdivision will be auctioned on May 2.

Department of Education, Training and Employment regional director for far north Queensland Deborah Dunston said the land was no longer required for educational purposes.

Member for Cook David Kempton said analysis completed for the Queensland Schools Planning Commission indicated that the long term population growth for the Tablelands was not significant enough to warrant delivery of new school infrastructure.

“Any local growth in Mareeba will be managed through the delivery of additional infrastructure within the existing schools as it is required,” he said.

It comes as the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) looks to sell large parcels of land on the outskirts of Mareeba.

DNRM has written to the Mareeba Shire Council seeking advice on what to do with the land bordered by Costin, Tilse and James streets and McIver Road.

The Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) resolved at its April 2 meeting to write to DNRM asking that some of the larger blocks of land be held in reserve for Strategic Land Management.

Councillors said large blocks of land near the centre of town were a rare commodity and could sustain large scale development such as shopping centres or aged care homes. At the meeting, Cr Alan Pedersen questioned the State Government’s willingness to dispose of the unallocated state land.

“Is the State going to retain any land? It is so important that there is a land bank available for future schools and hospitals,” he said.

Cr Allan Holmes said it was disappointing that the MSC wasn’t in a position to purchase any of the land themselves.

MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said he had never before seen so much land come up for disposal at the one time.

Mr Gilmore said the six hectare block bordering the Mareeba Connection Road represented “the last very large site for potential retail in this town”.

He said the combined area of the land being considered for disposal by DNRM was about 16 hectares.

By Ryan Groube Mackay Sugar has released a plan to reduce the impact of trucking hundreds of thousands of tonnes of cane through the communities of Mt Molloy and Julatten.

In little more than a month, Qube Logistics will begin transporting about 700,000 tonnes of Tableland cane to Mackay Sugar’s Mossman Mill.

Local residents are worried that having a B Double truck pass through the towns every six minutes will make the roads more dangerous and impact on their quality of life.

Last week, Mackay Sugar released a list of 21 actions that they and Qube Logistics will take to “address community concerns”.

Included in the plan is: the installation of brake retarders, four cameras in the truck’s cab to monitor driver behaviour, truck load restrictions, an enquiries and complaints number on the back of every vehicle, and mandatory school bus zone training for drivers.

The plan is available to Mt Molloy and Julatten residents at meetings held last week and through a letterbox drop.

Riders on the Skyrail cableway will be seeing the rainforest beneath them better than ever on a new open-air gondola ride.

The company made the two open-air gondolas, forming a single ride called ‘Canopy Glider’, available for public bookings on April 1.

Previously the open gondolas had only been available for use by professional photographers or by staff for maintenance jobs.

Other Skyrail gondolas are fully enclosed by glass canopies.

Each open-air gondola carries up to four passengers and a Skyrail ranger.

“Comment was so positive from the people we had on the open gondolas in the past that it became obvious we needed to change it,” he said.

Skyrail ships on average about 1500 tourists a day to Kuranda and the new open-air rides are set to boost the region’s international image even further.

Rides on the open gondolas cost an extra $100 on top of the regular $49 fee and bookings need to be made well in advance.

Skyrail was opened in 1992, after being constructed to extremely strict environmental guidelines.

The cableway’s massive towers and the Red Peak waystation were constructed entirely by heavy-lift helicopters.

Mr Reedman said next year’s ANZAC Ball would be orientated toward the centenary of the Gallipoli Landings, but would always raise money for the Avenue of Honour and another defence charity.

“Whenever myself and my wife Barbara are involved we’ll always split off some money for the Avenue,” he said. “People have had a really great response to the entire thing and they’re always asking how they can help – I tell them that the best way to help is to buy tickets and put bums on seats for the night.”

A total of $3,300 was raised on the night.

By Boyd Robertson The service and sacrifice of Australia’s soldiers has been commemorated at a charity ball held in Mareeba with the bonus of raising funds for the Soldier On initiative and Yungaburra’s Avenue of Honour.

The ANZAC Ball, held at Mareeba RSL on April 5, was attended by 105 people and featured Afghanistan War veteran Michael Lyddiard as keynote speaker.

Mr Lyddiard was severely wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) during his service in Afghanistan, losing his right eye, his right arm below the elbow and part of his left hand.

However, he refused to allow his injuries to slow him down, continuing to serve with the defence forces until 2011 and regularly competing in endurance swimming, running and biking events.

Mr Lyddiard told The Express the ball was a vital opportunity not just to raise funds but promote the work of Soldier On, which assists wounded Australian servicemen and women.

“Coming to this ball helps me get the meaning out there of what Soldier On is about, it helps me make people realise what their char-

ity money is actually going toward,” he said.

“One thing in particular is actually about body imagery, people in society today talk about body imagery in terms of slim or fat but they aren’t talking about people that have come back from service and have a disability and are trying to accept it – but because of society’s outlook it can be difficult for them and their families.

“It’s great being able to help people understand the hardships we face and the strategies we use, but most importantly it’s great to help people overcome their boundaries.”

Mr Lyddiard said the support of his comrades had ‘gotten him back on his feet’ after his wounding.

“When I got back, don’t get me wrong, it was a challenge,” he said.

“But the thing that got me through was the support I had at the time from my wife, family and the soldiers I had with me – the people that were actually on the scene with me that day are guys I stay in contact with at least once a month, we have a very strong bond that some people don’t understand but is respected amongst ourselves because we rely on one another.

The ANZAC Ball was organised by Mr Lyddiard’s mate Craig Reedman, another former soldier who was on the same mission with him in Afghanistan when the IED detonated.

Mr Reedman was also an organiser of the ball’s predecessor event, the ‘Night For The Avenue’ fundraiser last year ahead of the opening of the Avenue of Honour at the Tinaburra peninsula.

Mr Reedman said the ball had been very successful and particularly thanked the 1RAR Band from Lavarack Barracks in Townsville for their performances during the night.

“These guys come up all the way up from Townsville and don’t get paid anything extra, it’s pure charity for them,” he said. “They have already booked themselves in for next year

Dear Readers and Friends, One thing that I love about Europe are the age old traditions. Traditions that date back 1000s of years and that are kept alive and reinacted with pride and energy.

When we first arrived here in Bavaria we took our kids aged 5 and 7 to the local Christmas markets. We had been told about St Nikolaus making an appearance and putting on a bit of show. The kids were so excited and Glenn and I made sure they were right up the front to get the best view.

Well... St Nikolaus arrived driving a tractor and towing a boxed in trailer - this was followed by a very loud explosion as the trailer walls flew open and lots of creature like beasts escaped. “The Krampus” as they are called notoriously travel with St Nikolaus to capture all the naughty children and put them in their sack and take them back to their lair - never to be seen again.

One of these Krampus came flying over to our kids and threw himself at their feet and tried to grab them!!! I have never seen my kids move so fast. They scurried off through the crowd screaming totally terrified. I could not keep up with them. They climbed up the rafters in a shed at the back of the grounds and it took all my energy to prise them off. Lilykay and Rex had nightmares for a week after that and it took a lot of comforting to get them back to sleep each night.

Glenn and I did not intend to scare our kids that much and we did not really know about “Krampus”, but one good thing that came out of it is that our kids have very rarely been naughty since. All I have to mention is the word Krampus and they immediately do as they are asked.

Its not only the kids that need to look out - I too felt the pressure of a whip cross my legs! There you go, I always thought I was a good girl!

Soil health under the microscope

By Boyd Robertson An information session at Walkamin on April 3 gave farmers an insight into new techniques for improving soil health and crop yields.

The Soil Health Forum, co-hosted by Terrain Natural Resource Management and the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group (NGRMG) at the Walkamin Sports Club, featured presentations by scientists and farmers on nurturing soil biology, interpreting tests and the latest equipment.

Regional Landcare facilitator Fiona George, who co-organised the forum with Trevor Parker from NGRMG, said the event was about providing new insights into soil heath for farmers in an attempt to address issues facing the agricultural sector.

“Yields everywhere are steadily dropping, both in the cane fields on the coast and the fruit and vegetable farms up here, and a big part of that is because of issues with the soil,” she said.

“Our job as co-ordinators is to act as a link for information to get to the farmers so they can make their own choices.

“We’re not trying to tell farmers what to do, we’re saying ‘we hear your problems and we know that you have issues’ and we’re trying to provide some possible solutions.”

Trevor Parker said soil health was vital to successful agriculture.

“If you’ve got healthy soil you’ve got nutrient and water holding capacity along with better plant health,” he said.

“All these things make your crops more resistant to drought and lower input costs, so farmers will have more in their pockets at the end of the day.”

Dr Jones’s presentation centred on the value of activating mycorrhizal fungi and other microscopic soil life in order to improve nutrient levels and soil resilience.

“People forget that the soil is the world’s largest ecosystem,” Dr Jones said. “Because so many farmers are using such high levels of inorganic fertilizer like nitrogen and ammonia, they are preventing the fungi and other organisms from activating and having their effects on the soil, like aggregating and adding nutrient.

David Hardwick made his audience part of his presentation, taking them ‘on a journey through soil systems’ and having several attendees play the parts of various agents involved in soil chemistry and biology. A Q & A session followed the presentations. The forum was attended by about 100 people and funded by state and federal-Government Landcare programs.

The Mareeba event followed a similar forum at the Babinda RSL on April 2.

ESTABLISHED 1972

By Ryan Groube GROUND is set to be broken on a longawaited rail trail project linking Mareeba and Atherton.

The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) will begin work in the coming weeks on stage one and two of the project.

Stage one will link Platypus Park to Rotary Park with stage two taking the trail to Tolga.

Both stages are expected to be completed by June 30.

The TRC does not have any funding set aside to continue the trail to its final destination in Mareeba.

As a result of de-amalgamation, if and when, the trail gets to the TRC’s boundary on the outskirts of Walkamin it will be incumbent on the new Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) to complete the project.

Stage one and two of the project will be completed using $211,000 in TRC funds and a further grant of $140,667 from the State Government.

TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the completion of the first two stages of the project would be a huge recreational asset

to the local community.

“The rail trail has always been looked at as one of the connectors between Atherton and Mareeba, linking the two major Mountain Biking Hubs of the Tablelands and most importantly providing a safe passage for bike riders and recreational enthusiasts,” Cr Lee Long said.

MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said he had not been approached by the TRC about continuing the trail into Mareeba once it reaches Walkamin.

He said he didn’t have any objections to the rail trail but that it would most likely be the decision of a future council.

“These things don’t happen quickly,” he said.

Keeping the trail in good nick will require ongoing funding from the TRC’s maintenance budget.

The TRC are hoping to minimize the impact on its budget bottom line by seeking volunteers to maintain the track.

“Ultimately the asset belongs to the community and any assistance would be appreciated,” Cr Lee Long said.

Police have charged a 23-year-old man in relation to the break-in of the Atherton Police station on March 31.

It will be alleged that around 7.40pm on March 31, a man smashed a glass door and broke into the Atherton Police station.

He was arrested a short while later.

The station was unoccupied at the time and no property was stolen.

The 23-year-old Atherton man has been charged with two counts of wilful damage of police property and one count each of possess knife in a public place and serious assault of police.

He appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Take a drive down Byrnes St, Mareeba You drive past them every day, but what are they? …. the trees planted down Byrnes Street in Mareeba, that is.

Several years ago it was evident that the old gnarled mangos and black beans down the centre of Byrnes Street had seen better days, so most of them were removed and replaced with a whole swag of new trees. It was decided to select trees that reflected Mareeba’s location as the gateway to Cape York and proximity to the Wet Tropics rainforests at our doorstep, which has lead to an interesting and rather unusual collection of main street trees.

At the southern end of Byrnes Street near the roundabout at McDonald’s, the lovely trees in the centre strip are a form of White Apple (scientific name Syzygium forte subsp potamophilum) which occurs along the rivers and streams of Cape York. They are beautiful specimen trees with a perfect lollypop shape, papery bark on the trunk, fluffy white flowers and large white fruit.

Another Lilly-pilly which has been planted all along the main street is the Fibrous Satinash (Syzygium fibrosum). This is a small tree with a neat rounded canopy, glossy foliage, beautiful fluffy white or apricot flowers and bright pink edible fruit. They are just starting to come into flower now, so look out for them over the next weeks.

Other Lilly-pillies in the main street are the River Cherry (Syzygium tierneyanum) which is a common tree along our local waterways; the Bumpy Satinash (Syzygium cormiflorum) from our local rainforests and up into the Cape; and the Bamaga Satinash (Syzygium bamagense), a great tree from Cape York. There’s also a couple of Onion Wood trees (Syzygium alliiligneum) which is a rather uncommon plant from the wet rainforests in the Innisfail/Tully area. For the last couple of years the Onion Woods have put on a great display of fluffy white flowers and large bright red fruit.

Near the roundabout at the Granite Creek end of town, there’s a beautiful grove of Claudie Satinash (Syzygium pseudofastigiatum) with dense rounded canopies, fluffy white flowers and bunches of showy white fruit. This is an unusual tree from Cape York, named after the Claudie River where it occurs naturally.

In the centre strip near the Ant Hill Hotel are two beautiful spreading Damson Trees (Terminalia sericocarpa) providing welcome shade. And in the wet season the glorious Golden Pendas (Xanthostemon chrysanthus) burst into masses of fluffy yellow flowers. The Golden Penda is a wonderful symbol of our region, since it occurs naturally in rainforests from Cardwell to the top of the Cape.

The middle of a hot bitumen road in Mareeba would have to be one of the harshest environments you could ask a tree to grow in. How well these trees have grown demonstrates how tough and hardy some of our local flora really is.

Easter speed watch

By Ryan Groube POLICE will crack down on speeding motorists as the annual Easter road safety blitz began on April 4.

Tolerance margins – the number of kilometres an hour a motorist can travel above the speed limit before getting booked – will further be reduced prior to Easter.

Officer in charge of the Mareeba Traffic Branch Gordon Turner said the speed limit was a maximum and that the days of giving motorists leeway were coming to an end.

“A big problem that we have is that people know that police have a tolerance of about 10 kilometres an hour, but that is not the case anymore,” he said.

Increasingly accurate digital speedometers meant that tolerance levels will continue to “be less and less”.

Sergeant Turner said the first phase of the blitz, dubbed Operation Crossroads, would run until April 16.

Stage two will run over the Easter

Sergeant Gordon Turner and Member for Cook David Kempton have urged motorists to drive safely during the Easter holiday. long weekend from April 17 to 21 while the Operation would continue until school returns.

Sergeant Turner said there will be extra police on the roads and has urged motorists, particularly those travelling long distances, to drive safely and to the road conditions.

We have received a grant totalling $4638.79 (pictured above). We are very appreciative of the support of Mareeba Community Bank in giving us these funds. These funds will be used predominately to buy tools for our workshop. We are setting up a woodworking area for the men to be able to take on small projects.

This grant has come at the right time as we have been busy making some changes to our workshop area. We have renovated an old shipping container which will be a storage area for our tools. As well between the workshop and the container we have created a concreted breezeway which will be a very comfortable environment to work. We will keep you up to date with the fitting out of our workshop over the coming

Environmental group in crisis

By Ryan Groube An international award-winning environmental organisation based in Mareeba is struggling to keep its doors open as government funding dries up.

The Mitchell River Watershed Management Group is in the midst of a “financial crisis” with a funding shortfall of $50,000.

At a recent committee meeting the group’s executive resolved to prioritise funding from private charities and grants as well as a public fund to become “financially independent”.

Formed in 1990, the group is responsible for securing funding and overseeing projects along the Mitchell River catchment.

Key projects include, pest and weed control, erosion, land management and engaging property owners along the basin.

Group co-ordinator Peter Alden said the catchment faced a “raft of issues and stakeholders want us on the ground” but the lack of funding has hamstrung operations.

“At the moment we are up the proverbial creek which is why we are trying hard to find alternative funding options,” he said.

Mr Alden said should funding lapse for an extended period of time the cost of bringing the catchment back up to standard will be exurbanite.

“It [managing the catchment] might not be sexy but it is vitally important that

we secure money now so the problems in the catchment don’t become too bad.”

About six weeks ago, the committee wrote to government representatives at the Federal and State level about its funding plight.

Having received no response the group said they were left with no other choice but to lean on the public and private sector to remain operational.

Group chair Ian Adcock said the Mitchell River catchment was “particularly unique in that it is quite underdeveloped by national standards and has huge development potential.”

Mr Adcock said the group covered a 72,000 square kilometre area with a population of about 10,000 scattered across 50 scattered settlements.

He said the group needed $100,000 each year just to cover operational costs and had received no money in the past financial year.

The group is a registered environmental organisation and a deductable gift recipient which means all donations made to its public fund are “tax deductable”.

A membership subscription to the group is also available.

The group plans to hold a series of public gatherings in the coming months to raise awareness about its activities and to attract donations.

Locals have say on water Tableland leaders have secured a seat at the table as the Cairns City Council looks to secure the growing city has an adequate long-term water supply.

Cairns City has formed the Water Security Advisory Group which will meet 10 times this year to develop a long-term water strategy to meet increasing demand.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore and Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro both attended the group’s first meeting in Cairns last week.

At the April 2 MSC meeting, Cr Gilmore was formally appointed as Coun-

cil’s representative on the group.

Cr Gilmore said the water security of the region’s largest city had implications outside of Cairns.

“We are dealing with a finite resource and with Cairns expected to reach a population of 300,000 in 30 years time it is sensible to have a proper understanding of the availability of this resource,” he said.“It was very pleasing to be invited as a representative on this group because this is essentially a regional issue.” At the end of the year the group is expected to release a strategy on water security for the next 30 years.

When starting out, make sure you get together as a team and brainstorm. Set ambitious, yet attainable goals for both individuals and the team, and shape your fundraising activities according to your interests.

Here are five fun fundraising ideas to get you started: Be sponsored to shave or colour your hair, or even shave your beard off. Boost fundraising opportunities by getting local personalities to join the fun.

Young blood has taken the helm at the Atherton Chamber of Commerce with 25-year old Karlie Milne signing on as president.

Former president Connie Duncan will stay on as vicepresident after stepping down from the top job after two and a half years ‘to make way for youth and young businesses.”

Ms Milne owns and operates Tableland Secretarial Services in Atherton and was a Chamber committee member since the organisation’s revival in 2011.

She was nominated for president by fellow member Quentin Fletcher at the Chamber’s annual general meeting on March 27. Ms Milne said she was ‘still finding her feet’ in the new role but already had ideas for new directions the chamber could take, including improving communication with the community and establishing free Wi-Fi throughout Atherton’s Main Street.

She also dismissed concerns her age would be a problem when it came to leading the Chamber.

“We’ve got three members under the age of 30 on the committee so we do have a lot of young blood, so to speak,” she said. “Being young and female could be a problem if you look at it one way but Connie was there before me for two and a half years, and I’ve been on the committee the entire time so I think everyone is used to the idea – they understand that there are women in business and young people too.”

Ms Milne said the idea of making free Wi-Fi available though Atherton’s main street was ambitious but could pay off long-term, especially for tourism.

“If a tourist comes to town and says ‘I need somewhere to stay’ they could whip out their phone, connect to Wi-Fi and look something up without having to use 3G,” she said.

Ms Duncan said that she and Chamber were behind Ms Milne ‘100 per cent’.

“Karlie has been in the chamber as an executive member and has organised social events and she is going to take a new slant on things,” she said.

“She’s got enormous support from the other members and I will be there as vice-president to support her as well – I don’t think it’s fair to leave the new president hanging.”

The time demands of the president’s position and a desire to allow fresh perspectives motivated Ms Duncan to relinquish the title.

“The time demands were huge and my childcare business is expanding,” she said. “I also wanted it to be seen that the Chamber president does change and allow some new vitality into the Chamber.”

Mental health sufferers get funded help

By Ryan Groube A federally funded program to assist sufferers of serious mental health disorders re-establish themselves in the community has begun in Mareeba.

Organisers of the Partners in Recovery (PIR) program in the far north hosted the Community Initiative, Community Response – Working together for recovery forum at the Mareeba RSL on April 1.

About 50 representatives of the mental health sector attended the forum to familiarise themselves with the PIR program and identify gaps in the system.

The PIR program covers the far north Queensland Medicare Local Region which includes Cairns, Cassowary Coast, Croydon, Etheridge shire, the Tableland and the Cape.

Funded through the Federal Health Department, the $8 million dollar program will run until June 2016 and will employ 14 staff across the region.

Cassandra Burness has been appointed as the local PIR support facilitator who will be responsible for rolling out the program in Mareeba and surrounding areas.

Ms Burness began in the role in February and will be responsible for getting mental health sufferers back on their feet.

Included in the job will be assisting clients in securing employment, accessing government services, linking with personal helpers and mentors, and finding accommodation. Another key part of the job will be to establish clients with “natural support systems” that, it is hoped, will reduce their reliance on medication and expensive clinical appointments or housing in mental health facilities.

“It is about establishing what it is that they need and helping them find what is available [by way of support] not just on the clinical side,” she said.

PIR manager Gary Hubble said mental health sufferers were among the most vulnerable people in the community.

“This funding is about breaking down any barriers that we might see when it comes to these people finding their feet in the community,” he said. “What we hope to see is a shift away from purely clini-

cal, high end services and instead focus on a blend of services with a focus on the needs of each person.”

At the forum, a trio of musicians from Song Connections – based in Cairns – performed three songs for attendees.

Each of the performers has battled serious mental health conditions but found support through the music group.

Former Mareeba local Emma Mauro stumbled across Song Connections by accident almost three years ago while struggling with a mental health issues.

The friends she has made through the group has bolstered her confidence, provided a regular social outlet and reduced her reliance on clinical services and medication.

“Really my only social outlets back then were at work where I am accountant, which isn’t particularly social, and through my family,” she said. “[Song Connections] makes me go out and do something once a week and when you have been unwell one of the first things that you lose is your confidence.”

Ms Mauro looked nothing like the girl without confidence when she belted out Ben E King’s hit song Stand By Me at the forum. Attendees at the forum were asked to fill out a brief survey about what mental health services in the region were: doing well, need to improve, as well as feedback on the forum.

The findings of the survey will be collated by Centacare Cairns in their role as the lead agency for the PIR program in the far north. Centacare executive director Helga Biro said the community has a role to play in assisting mental health sufferer’s in their recovery.

“We want to send a clear message that supporting people experiencing a mental illness does not lie entirely in the clinical domain. Everyone in the community can make a difference by reducing stigma, offering hope and maintaining a focus on the person,” she said.

Ms Biro said in the past year one in five people have experienced a diagnosable mental health concern while almost half of all Australians will have experienced poor mental health in their lifetime.

Cook Shire business survey

Economic data that will help shape the future development and growth of Cook Shire’s businesses will be the result of the Cook Shire Council Business Survey, which opens this week.

Following on from the successful Cooktown and Cape York Business Conference last month, Council will begin the annual survey this week.

The survey contains 28 questions about business operations, skills and training, marketing and promotion and industry development.

All information collected will be sent to a database provided by Council, and will remain strictly confidential.

The data will be compiled into a report, providing a wealth of information to help Council deliver the most appropriate development and growth for the region as well as identify key challenges and opportunities facing local business.

Hundreds of business owners Shire-wide have been invited to complete the survey.

The survey is also available via Council’s website www.cook.qld.gov.au, through the Cook Shire Connect Facebook page www. facebook.com/cookshireconnect or on request by contacting Council.

The survey is available until April 30 with results expected to be available by mid May.

Huge blow to QSL Mackay Sugar has confirmed that it will remain with Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL) regardless of Wilmar’s decision to withdraw

from the raw sugar marketing body.

Wilmar last week gave notice that it will withdraw from its marketing arrangement with QSL, effective from the 2017 season.

Mackay Sugar CEO Quinton Hildebrand said the outcome was unfortunate, and that Mackay Sugar did not share Wilmar’s position.

“Mackay Sugar intends to remain with QSL and we will work with QSL, the other mill suppliers and growers to develop a suitable strategy that can be put in place from the 2017 season,” he said.

Mackay Sugar will crush about 700,000 tonnes of cane from the Tableland this year with the 2014 harvest to begin in about a month.

Wilmar is one of QSL’s biggest suppliers and produces about 2 million tonnes of raw sugar each year.

Get your Easter fishing permit Recreational fishers looking to wet a line at one of the state’s stocked impoundments this Easter, are reminded to purchase a permit before heading out.

Fisheries Queensland SIPS Coordinator Danielle Knutsen said purchasing a stocked impoundment permit (SIP) was a simple process.

“SIPs can be purchased quickly and easily online giving freshwater angling enthusiasts more time to do what they like most,” she said.

“Online permits are fast, easy, convenient and less prone to getting damaged or lost.

“You also don’t have to wait to receive it.

The permit is emailed to you straight away making it a great option for those who have left their purchase to the last minute.”

Ms Knutsen said permits can also be

purchased over the counter at a number of outlets throughout Queensland, or by calling 13 25 23 during business hours to order one over the phone.

“Details of outlets can be found on our website at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au,” she said.

“Regardless of which method you purchase your permit, they cost just $7.70 for a weekly permit, $38.60 for a yearly permit or $33.55 for concession cardholders. People under 18 years of age do not require a permit.

“The permit covers all 32 dams on the scheme, with a range of species available to recreational fishers.

“These dams are well known as some of the best places to fish for iconic freshwater species such as barramundi, Australian bass, golden perch and Murray cod.

"Enjoy the dam fishing experience this holiday season, and don’t forget to keep your permit on you at all times."

Youth leadership program Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the Tableland are being encouraged to apply for the 2014 Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program.

David Kempton, Assistant Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs and Member for Cook said the program gave 40 Indigenous Queenslanders aged 18–25 years, an exciting opportunity to develop their leadership skills and learn about Parliament.

“The week-long program begins in Brisbane on June 21 and will feature leadership and career development workshops, presentations and cultural activities,” Mr Kempton said.

“It will then culminate in the

“During the mock parliament participants will speak for and against a proposed Bill and raise issues of personal importance in the presence of elected Members of Parliament.”

“Participants will have the opportunity to work with mentors during the program and benefit from their inspiration, knowledge and experience,” he said.

“It’s also provides a platform to network with Elders and other Indigenous community leaders, MPs and senior government representatives.”

The Queensland Government program will be delivered in partnership with Glencore Coal.

Smoother footpaths to get cash boost ATHERTON, Tolga, Kairi, Walkamain, Herberton, Ravenshoe, Malanda and Millaa Millaa will all benefit from a focus on improving footpaths across the Tablelands Regional Council.

As outlined in a report presented to the most recent meeting of Council, excess funds in the existing Capital Works program will be redirected to repair identified defects on footpaths in those towns.

The repairs are to be completed this financial year. Atherton’s allocation is to be $18,493, Tolga, Kairi and Walkamin $10,000, Herberton and Ravenshoe $10,000 and Malanda and Millaa Millaa $11,254.

The Mayor, Cr Lee Long, noted that the works are part of Council’s ongoing risk management program and will enhance the safety of footpaths for users.

Review by Louise Keller: Don't trust anyone is the mantra of this 3D Marvel comic sequel, whose unfathomable complex plot unravels among massive stunts and nonstop major action. The action, with its frenetic editing, is underlined by a pounding, percussion-heavy score; cars spin, twist and flip, buildings crumble and spectacular explosions are par for the course. High energy martial arts choreography and humour by way of slick one-liners are in plentiful supply too, and as expected, the film is non-stop dizzying action designed to propel teenage boys into comic-book heaven.

In the 45 minute lead up before the main plot reveals itself, there is a dramatic hostage rescue mission on a ship when Captain America shows his fitness and indestructible skills. This follows a brief recap of the events that transformed Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) into a Super Soldier.

The plot involves Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping body S.H.I.E.L.D., his high ranking colleague Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) who reveals his different sides and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), the brainwashed Super Soldier with an indestructible metal arm, who was Steve Rogers' best friend in their former life.

Highlights include a thrilling sequence in which Nick Fury is attacked from all angles as he sits in his armoured 4WD and the fight-scene in which Captain America is surrounded by adversaries in a glass lift

Redford is wasted in a non-descript role that offers no challenges and the mainstay of the film relies on the push-pull relationship between Captain America and the Winter Soldier. Stan has a sultry presence, while the impressively built Evans effectively embodies his heroic character.

Scarlett Johansson, with a sleek, scarlet bob is an appealing presence as Natasha Romanoff and the Black Widow and delivers some good lines including 'Everyone we know is trying to kill us.' Anthony Mackie is also good value as Sam Wilson/The Falcon, skilled in aerial combat.

The film can more or less be summed up when Captain America answers The Falcon's question which are good guys or bad guys, by simply saying: 'If they're shooting at you, they're the bad guys.'

Mr. Peabody (voice of Ty Burrell) is an allround genius...and a bow-tie-wearing bespectacled dog. Using his most ingenious invention, the WABAC machine, Mr. Peabody and his adopted son Sherman (Max Charles) hurtle back in time to experience world-changing events first-hand and interact with some of the greatest characters of all time. But when Sherman breaks the rules of time travel, they find themselves in a race to repair history and save the future, while Mr. Peabody may face his biggest challenge yet – being a parent.

1/2 cup + tbsp granulated white sugar 1 cup powdered sugar

Method 1. Preheat oven to 200 F and place a piece of parchment paper on a cookie baking sheet.

2. Whisk egg whites in a bowl until frothy, add cream of tartar and beat until soft peaks form.

3. Slowly add the granulated sugar and whisk until the meringue reaches stiff peaks. Fold in the powdered sugar.

4. Place the meringue in a piping bag with the tip of choice and pipe on to the baking sheet.

5. Bake for 2 hours.

Pipe a line of royal icing in the back of the meringue. Attach the lollipop stick and press lightly. Let dry.

ANZAC DAY MARCHES FRiDAY 25 APRiL, 2014 TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES Notice is hereby given, under Section 69 of the Local Government Act 2009 that for the purpose of Anzac Day: (A) Chillagoe - Burke Development Road between Cathedral and Frew Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between 9.00am and 10.30am on Friday 25 April. An alternative route for through traffic is available via Cathedral, King and Frew Streets.

(B) Dimbulah - Raleigh Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between 5.00am and 8.00am on Friday 25 April.

No last-second victory for frustrated Gladiators

By Ryan Groube A miraculous try-saving tackle has robbed the Mareeba Gladiators of victory against the Edmonton Storm in a Saturday night thriller at Davies Park.

Trailing by two points with 90 seconds left to play, ‘Gators vicecaptain Shana Aue burst through a hole in the defensive line and began charging towards the undefended try line.

Just as he was about to touch down a Storm defender has came across in cover and took wild swipe at the ball.

The defender’s fist connected, knocking the Stedden over the dead ball line as the Storm held on for a 22-20 victory.

For ‘Gators coach Cameron McPherson the loss was a bitter pill to swallow with the home team playing the better football for most of the match.

In the end4, a lopsided penalty count and a series of basic errors in the play the ball came back to haunt the ‘Gators.

“We were very willing tonight but our discipline was just horrible,” he said.

“We just made so many mistakes around the ruck. Blokes were making three or four mistakes each at the play the ball.

“I think with the penalty count everyone at the football ground tonight knows how the referees performed and I don’t think it was consistent for both sides.”

Despite conceding an early try, the ‘Gators were the better team in the first half.

Paul Alofi and Tom Hughes both touched down for the ‘Gators as they established an early 12-6 lead before the Storm hit back to level the scores.

With about a minute to play in the opening half, the Storm were deep in attack when the ‘Gators intercepted a pass and ran the ball

to the halfway line.

A covering tackle bought down the ‘Gators player with a brawl between the sides erupting soon after.

The home side was awarded a penalty with ‘fullback Navitalai Ratuleva splitting the sticks from halfway as the ‘Gators went to the sheds with a 14-12 lead.

In the second half the Storm did all the early attacking and scored two tries to establish a 22-14 lead.

Paul Alofi helped keep the ‘Gators in the contest, scoring his second with the conversion reducing the margin to four points with about 15 minutes to play.

Despite having opportunities to win the ‘Gators just couldn’t find the knockout blow.

After the match, McPherson was critical of his side’s willingness to get involved in push and shove rather than playing football.

“At the moment we are too easily distracted and seem more interested in getting involved in the niggle than playing rugby league,” he said.

Robert Pedersen was sent off for an innocuous incident in the second half and will front the judiciary this week to determine his eligibility for the ‘Gators next game against Brothers.

Fullback Ratuleva is also expected to miss a couple of weeks after sustaining a knee injury.

The ‘Gators A Reserves also suffered a heartbreaking two-point loss.

For 79 minutes the ‘Gators led the Storm but a converted try in the final minute saw the Storm record a 18-16 victory.

Mareeba’s Under 18s went down 38-10 while C Grade recorded a 28-22 victory over the Cairns Kangaroos.

The ‘Gators travel to Cairns this week to take on Brothers.

Roosters still on duck The Atherton Roosters are still yet to notch up an A Grade win after being crushed 8-32 by the Tully Tigers at the weekend.

The Roosters’ Reserves and Under 18s sides also went down on 10-20 and 10-24 points respectively in a clean sweep for the night.

Single tries by Hayden Lyon and Dean McGivery were Atherton’s only source of points for Saturday night’s A Grade game, with no successful conversions being made.

The Tigers proved completely superior in the offence, landing six tries and four successful conversions.

The loss cements the A Grade Roosters’ position at the bottom of the Cairns District Rugby League ladder, with still no victory five games into the 2014 season.

The Roosters Reserves were overpowered by a fast and aggressive Tully side despite some good work on the wings.

A long chain pass through deft hands out to Mitchell Woodleigh on the left flank allowed him to slip past defenders to plant in the very corner.

Capitalizing on massive gains made from a well-executed penalty kick in the next play, Atherton scored again with Harley Lyons mirroring Woodleigh’s earlier manoeuvre to slide across the line.

Unfortunately the Reserve Grade Tigers not only matched Atherton in their offence on the flanks but were also able to muscle through defenders beneath the posts several times for tries, by halftime creating a points gap that the Roosters were unable to close throughout a close-fought but stalemated second half.

It was a similar tale in the Under 18s despite a more even matching in skill levels and play structure between the two sides.

Tully’s larger players proved to be the critical factor in their victory, with hulking forward Jeremy Laumea effortlessly carrying three or four Roosters across the tryline for two tries.

The Roosters will have a chance to recover and reorganise this weekend with a bye, before travelling to Yarrabah to face off against the notoriously unpredictable Seahawks.

Bulls top Lions, look to Heat As the mens premier mens and ladies sides enjoyed a weekend off, the clubs second division mens side flew the flag for the club with a comprehensive 4-0 drubbing over the Leichhardt Lions at Borzi Park on Friday night.

The mens second division side is sprinkled with former premier league stars and some young stars and together proved to strong for the travelling Lions side who were totally outplayed by the Bulls using the side open spaces of Borzi park to their advantage, racing to a 3-0 lead at the break thanks to goals from Sam Girgenti, Mark Plowman and Ukranian import Kostya Kravchuk.

In the second period the Bulls dominated once again and despite a host of chances could only achieve one more goal from the penalty spot with Mario Terranova stepping up and converting after new player Billy Bezuidenhout was brought down in the box.

for the match, enjoyed the freedom of resting some of the stars and bringing on some of the new players to the club, and still dominated.

Bulls president Alex Srhoj is also calling on all fans to ‘cancel Easter plans and bring all your Easter energy to Borzi Park’ as the side prepares to host the FNQ Heat in the knockout FFA cup on Easter Sunday. Easter is the only free weekend for both the Bulls and the Heat.

There will be plenty of interest in the match, with the Heat’s origin feeding from the Bulls former QSL side, the FNQ Bulls and a number of Heat players who donned the orange and black for the club in the former Queensland state league.

Srhoj knows first hand how inspiring a strong vocal home crowd can be and is hoping for a huge turn out at the Easter Sunday match.

“A massive crowd will help lift the boys and it will give the extra energy needed to overcome anyone”. said Srhoj.

McKinlay continues sports dominance

By Boyd Robertson House McKinlay is dominating the sports scene at Mareeba State High School (MSHS) after winning the school’s annual cross-country for the first time since 2011.

Their cross country win with on April 4 follows their victory at the school’s swimming carnival in February.

McKinlay took the top spot with 247 points, edging out Gregory on 227 points.

House co-captain Kiarna La Rosa said she and her comrades were now gunning for top spot at the school’s athletics carnival in June.

“We are definitely looking to take out all three and make it a clean sweep,” she said.

“I think we’re getting these good results this year because the captains are putting in a real effort to get the house motivated and together at events, and everyone in the house is participating and putting in their best effort too.

“It’s really amazing to see them all get into

the events like they have.”

Year 9 student Tamera Bapua-Yung, 13, was the top female runner for the day, completing the 3780-metre course in 17 minutes and six seconds.

Brock Hawke, 17, was the fastest male runner, coming in with a time of 13 minutes and 48 seconds.

The towering Hawke, a Year 12 student, now lists the third-fastest time on the course since its length was finalized in 2000.

Hawke’s top time comes as a surprise to few, despite his switching from full-time running training to basketball training in Year 10.

MSHS sports co-ordinator Terry McClelland said the high participation rates at the event was a great reflection on students.

“We had a record number of kids getting on both the run and walk courses, with 163 getting out there for a run,” he said.

“Their behaviour and cleanliness has been excellent throughout the whole day.”

Speedway back in action

By Boyd Robertson It was thrills and spills galore at Mareeba Speedway on Sunday when Mareeba Motor Racing Club roared back into action for 2014 with an all-new open event.

The Outlaw Classic challenge sees drivers across all grades take to the track in A Grade cars to see how they stack up.

Sunday’s Outlaw Classic round, the first of three, was won

by Angelo Tudini, followed by Russel Equinox and Brett Hardy.

In the other races Ian Turner came in first for the Super 4’s, Baydon Ellston won the Formulas and Lucy Reed took out top spot for the B Grades.

Tony Villella won the C Grade races for the day and Eric Wallace was the top Junior Grade racer.

Young racing belle Lexi Underwood, 20, had herself a close call in one of the Formula heats, striking the wall on the second

turn and rolling several times.

The crash did little to dampen her enthusiasm for racing, as she explained to The Express.

“This is the first time I’ve crashed in the two and a half years I’ve been doing this – I knew I had no control as I went into the corner so I just knew I had to hold on, not let go of the steering wheel, go with it then once it stops moving shut everything off and wait for people to get there,” she said.

I’m not too sure how many times I rolled – I had my eyes shut and it happened really quickly and it wasn’t scary.

“I got straight back into the next race because all the boys were getting ready and I didn’t want to miss out.”

Lexi’s winged Formula car took most of the abuse, but was good to go after receiving new wings, tyres, bars and a replacement front axle.

Speedway will be back on May 4.

Mako hosts sprints Away Game!

The first round of the Far North Queensland Bitumen Sprint series was held on the March 30 at the Mako Trac, Mareeba.

The day was hot and hectic with a record number of spectators and nominations, 43 in total, and some had to be turned away due to limited time to race.

FNQ Motorsports Club has negotiated a later closing time for future events, but will require that participants book on the FNQ Motorsports Club website to avoid disappointment at future events.

The competition was close and frenetic in all classes with final results not being apparent until the end of the day.

Phil Pyke, in his Mitsubishi EVO 6, was the eventual outright winner, winning the Outright Class.

He was closely followed by Karl McAtamney in a Nissan Sylvia and Michael Anderson in a Nissan Skyline GTR.

Jess Bates won the Classic Class in a 1974 Celica.

First time competitor Keegan Wood took out the Over 5 Litre Class, which is dominated by the Aussie V8’s, in his Holden HSV Maloo Ute. The V8 result left some of the more experienced Falcon GT drivers scratching their heads and looking for more speed to stay in the race.

In the Under 1600 Class, Steve Wilbraham took the honours in his far from standard specification Toyota Corolla, while the 1600 - 2 Litre Class was taken out by Tou Xiong in his Honda Civic.

The 3 to 5 Litre Class was won by Karl McAtamney in the Nissan Sylvia.
