ayor Rosa Lee Long said the days of council funding big ticket items are over as the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) handed down a “conservative”, maintenance-heavy budget last week. Cr Lee Long said it would have been irresponsible for council to announce any major infrastructure projects without a full understanding of the financial landscape post de-amalgamation. The 2013-14 budget is based on the existing TRC for the next six months as well as separate budgets for the remnant TRC and new Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) from January 1, 2014. For the first six months of 2014, the MSC will have a total operating revenue of $27.5 million with $11.9 million of that made up of rates and charges. In the same period, the MSC will have expenses of $27.3 million contributing to a operational surplus for the first six months of $210, 365. The remnant TRC’s financial future is less clear because their figures for the first six months of 2014 have been included with the budget for the amalgamated council. Cr Lee Long said the reality is that it will take time for both councils to readjust to operating with a reduced rate base, evershrinking Federal and State Government grants and rising input costs. “Going into two separate little councils is going to be hard and I have no doubt will disadvantage the Tableland region,” she said. “What we needed to do with this budget was to get through the tunnel, wait for the
dust to settle and then gauge from there what sort of financial position we are in. “The reality is that as two small councils our borrowing capacity has taken a hit. We may find that, in time, we may be able to fund up to a certain amount for bigger projects again but it will be harder with this reduction in rateable properties.” The $101 million budget includes a heavily reduced capital works program of $35 million, the majority of which will be used to maintain existing roads, water and sewerage infrastructure and council buildings. The budget includes: 8.44 million for roads, drains, bridges and footpaths, $5.8 million for the replacement and renewal of plant and equipment, $7.9 million for maintaining parks and gardens as well as $2.3 million for the 11 library branches across the region. One of the biggest non-maintenance capital expenditure projects is $900,000 to extend the Atherton council chambers. Cr Lee Long said the expenditure was necessary to accommodate the increased staff that will be based in Atherton post deamalgamation. “It was prudent at this stage of the game to have no big capital expenditure. One of the biggest amounts is for the extension of the Atherton council chambers but it was either extend the building or purchase another one,” she said. “This is a budget where we have had to let those big projects fall by the wayside because there are too many unknowns moving towards us in the coming months.” Cr Lee Long said she was proud of the budget that council handed down and thanked staff for their efforts in challenging circumstances.

A very special award By Ryan Groube
N
OT one of the young dancers who took out a major award at the Cairns and District Junior Eisteddfod knew Patsy Fry but overnight they became a part of her extraordinary legacy. Dance Connections Studios under 13 dance troupe was awarded the Patsy Fry Memorial Shield on the final night of the Eisteddfod at the Cairns Civic Theatre on June 29. The award is handed to the troupe who may not necessarily have delivered the best routine but the most memorable as judged by dance adjudicator TraceyLee McKinney. In the case of the local 13 strong group their routine was both. The troupe won their category for their “Get on the Floor” performance which catapulted them to the shield win. Mrs Fry passed away in 2001 at 50 years of age. From her Cairns-based school, Patsy Fry Dance Academy, she trained and mentored thousands of dancers during her career. One of those she mentored was Dance Connections Studios director Maree Gear. When Mrs Gear began the studio in Mareeba as an 18 year old and reached out to Mrs Fry for advice, finding much, much more. “When I opened the school I was the new kid on the block and I had heard about Patsy around the Eisteddfod scene so one day I went down to her for a bit

of help and she took me under her wing,” she said. “She was there for me my whole career in every way as my mentor. I still draw on the things she told me [when I teach] and I can remember it just like it was yesterday. “To win this award means so much to me personally and now it us up to me to pass on to the new generation what Patsy
taught me.” Mrs Gear said in all the excitement from the win and the preceding school holiday break she hadn’t had a chance to sit the troupe down and explain the significance of the award. “Most of them are too young to even have a clue what this award means but I very much intend to let them know,” she said.
The Patsy Fry Memorial Shield is donated by the Cairns and District Junior Eisteddfod Association. Association president Bertie Peppi said the memorial shield was a way of passing on Mrs Fry’s legacy to the next generation. Geraldine Petersen from Dance Connections Studios took out the Emily Smith bursary for being adjudged the Most Promising Ballet Dancer.
TRC ruling will save more pets By Boyd Robertson A decision by the Tableland Regional Council (TRC) will mean that animal foster carers will be able to home more animals on their properties. At the July 4 meeting council voted to allow foster carers associated with Animal Rehoming Tablelands and other approved association to home extra dogs and two cats at their properties. The vote means an urban carer can now foster three dogs and three cats, while a rural carer can foster five dogs and five cats. Previously urban carers were limited to two of each animal and rural carers limited to three of each. Cats are still restricted to indoors only and dogs must be kept within an enclosure. The decision is a move to reduce the amount of stray animals put down on the Tableland. Councillor Marjorie Pagani supported the move, saying it would help relieve council of the strain of dealing with the animals.
“The people that take these animals into their homes should be supported because they take pressure off council with its limited resources,” she said. Animal Rehoming Tablelands treasurer Lorraine hailed the decision, calling it a “great step forward in the battle against cruelty to animals.” “I want to congratulate our council for this new policy – it shows a real commitment to the welfare of animals and a deep desire to reduce the numbers of companion animals who lose their lives every day in Australian pounds,” she said. Mareeba Animal Refuge operator Jennifer Walsh welcomed council’s decision. “I think this is wonderful,” she said. “There are times we are completely overloaded and foster carers do a lot to take that pressure off us. Animal Rehoming Tablelands, which was established in July last year, has about a dozen registered foster carers spread across the Tableland.
Special K was born in the wild and successfully settled into a foster home through the efforts of Animal Rehoming Tablelands.

One man dead after explosion
A small action group has tried so far unsuccessfully to halt the development of the Mount Emerald Wind Farm.
POLICE investigating a fatal explosion at Walkamin on June 29, delivered their report to the coroner and briefed the Department of Police Prosecutions on Monday. At the time of print it remained unclear what, if any, charges will be laid after gunpowder sparked the explosion at about 9.30pm at a Kippen Drive property where 12 people, including three-year-old twins, were attending a barbecue. A 58-year-old man was killed in the explosion while two other adult males were rushed to Mareeba Hospital and have since been discharged. On July 5, police investigators held a meeting with representatives of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) as well as Workplace Health and Safety (WHS). The coroner was due to attend that meeting but had to cancel at the last minute after being required to attend court. DNRM and WHS indicated that they will impose sanctions as a result of the fatal blast.
Wind farm delay By Ryan Groube Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has made a final play to retain the decision making power for the controversial $540 million Mount Emerald Wind Farm. Wind farm developers Ratch Australia and Port Bajool lodged an appeal with council seeking more time to provide critical information the TRC need to adequately assess the application. The outstanding information includes “substantive technical details” about noise, visual, traffic, construction and ecological impacts associated with the 75-turbine development The developers were first asked to provide this information on May 1, 2012 and have already been granted one extension until October 28, 2013. At the July 4 meeting, councillors deferred the developers request to extend the deadline until April 1, 2014 citing a lack of “evidence of progress made in relation to requested information and estimated timeframes for completion”. If the extension is granted, responsibility for approving the project will rest with the new Mareeba
Shire Council (MSC) once it becomes operational on January 1, 2014. Should the request be denied, the developers could let the application lapse and simply reapply with the MSC next year. Mayor Rosa Lee Long said council took the decision to defer the request to ensure that the reasons for seeking the extension were legitimate and that the developers weren’t just “sitting on their hands”. Ratch Australia’s executive general manager operations and business development, Geoff Dutton, said he would not comment on the progress of the information request until formal confirmation of the TRC’s decision. Mr Dutton did concede that it was “likely” that the application would be assessed by the MSC. The Mount Emerald Wind Farm has attracted opposition from Wind Turbine Action, a small but active group of protesters who live near the site. Although the development sits on land under the jurisdiction of the MSC the majority of the opponents remain within the boundaries of the TRC. Within the boundaries
of the MSC, the wind farm has attracted high profile support from the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and Member for Cook David Kempton. Bringing a major project to the shire during the infancy of the MSC will loom as an attractive option for a new council given that any political fall out will be minimised by the majority of the project’s opponents living in the TRC. If the Wind Farm is approved it would generate enough power to meet the annual needs of more than 75,000 homes in FNQ.

We have taken some “poetic licence” with the building of our gaol. Usually the gaol of the bygone era was all closed in, with one very high barred window. We needed a larger barred area so that the public can view the interior. The interior ant bed floor is made from the grass eating termites. We smashed the ant bed into powder and mixed it with water and spread it out like you do with cement. It becomes almost as hard as cement. Many floors were made this way in early times. The gaol door is an original. A farmer found it in a paddock in Mutchilba whilst he was ploughing. It arrived here at the Heritage Centre soon after the Centre opened about 18 years ago. As no records were kept then, we have no idea of the farmer’s name or where it may have come from. The nearest gaol would probably have been at Thornborough and this door is as heavy as lead, so it remains a mystery. Another mystery is the ball and chain, and the handcuffs which you can view at our gaol. We were given them by the Mareeba Rodeo Museum but we have no record of where they originally came from. If anyone can help us with the origins of the gaol door, ball and chain and handcuffs, we would love to know their history.

We’re opening the doors to innovation for improved services across our hospitals.
Every day, thousands of committed staff walk through the doors of our local hospitals to help. To invest in them, and the equipment they need to perform, we’re opening the doors to businesses and community organisations who can help out too. Just like we’ve done for years with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Blue Care. These partnerships are designed to deliver better health services, with no existing public hospital to be privatised. It means we can invest more in our workforce and the great job they do every day, because every Queenslander deserves a better state of health. Visit www.health.qld.gov.au/blueprint to find out more.

Dental program tripled By Ryan Groube A major expansion of Mareeba Hospital’s dental program will begin next week as the service prepares to take a leading role in training students from James Cook University. Hutchinson Builders will begin the 25-week work program that will triple the dental chairs available at Mareeba Hospital from two to six on July 15. JCU students in the final year of their five-year degree will undertake four month placements at the Mareeba Hospital from 2014. During the placements students will perform procedures on eligible Queensland Health patients under the supervision of the resident dentist. The upgrade is being funded by a $1.7 million dollar grant from Health Workforce Australia, a Commonwealth Government initiative aimed at supporting the training of medical professionals in rural and remote locations. Head of JCU’s dental school Professor Andrew Sandham said the partnership between the university and Mareeba Hospital would not only benefit students but also the wider Tableland community. “Mareeba is a key centre on the Atherton Tableland with a need for expanded oral health services,” he said.
Professor Sandham said by the time students reach the final year they have already undergone twoyears of clinically treating patients. “In their first year students observe at professional dental practices, and they work in our state-ofthe-art simulated dentistry facility during the first two years of the course,” he said. “This is followed by supervised clinical treatment of patients. They begin with simple procedures such as cleaning, and we gradually increase the complexity of tasks. “In their fifth and final year, they are ready to join the workforce on extended, supervised placements.” Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board chair Bob Norman said it was vital students got “real world experience” working in hospitals before they graduated. “I was very forceful in advocating for this to happen because it will achieve two very important things. First it will help drive waiting list times down and second we will be training dentists in rural areas,” he said. “This will offer students real world dentistry, with real world supervision under real world conditions.” Mareeba Hospital facility manager Lyn Wardlaw said it was “exciting” to be able to offer the extended service to locals from 2014.
JCU students will complete their final year of dentistry operating on Queensland Health patients at the Mareeba Hospital from 2014.
Crisafulli denies costs were witheld THE office for the Minister for Local Government, David Crisafulli, has denied a directive has been issued to councils to withhold deamalgamation costs. The denial was forced after divisional councillor for Kuranda Jenny Jensen went to the media last week to allege that Minister Crisafulli had ordered the Tablelands Regional
Council to remove deamalgamation costs from its website. In a briefing from Mr Crisafulli’s office, The Express was told no such directive had been issued from the Minister but that given the uncertainty over what constitutes a de-amalgamation cost it may have been “suggested” that the information be removed.

Funding boost for gym By Ryan Groube The Mareeba Gymnastics Club has emerged as a big winner in the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) budget. Tight regulations from Gymnastic Queensland has prevented the club from hosting level 10 events until the gymnasium is extended. In the budget the club has received $200,000 for the extensions which follows a further $200,000 that was allocated by the TRC in 2012-13. The entire project, which will see the gymnasium extended by 20 metres is expected to cost $600,000. Mareeba Gymnastics Club president Kelly Tulloch said she was confident the $400,000 allocated would be sufficient for the first two stages of the expansion.
The expansion is expected to happen in four stages. Each stage will be built off site and tacked on to the western end of the TRC owned building. Mrs Tulloch said once the first two stages are complete the event will be able to host level 10 events and possible regional championships. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the spend was a good investment. “Gymnastics is a very popular sport, particularly in Mareeba,” she said. “This council is very supportive of sport that is targeted at school aged children. This will allow the club to once again hold higher level events.” Mrs Tulloch said she hoped the first two stages of the extension would be complete by the end of the year.

Community CELEBRATIONS
CLUB NEWS Atherton Lions Club with Sandra Taske
On Saturday June, 22, 1963, local couple Les Adams and Jean Murray tied the knot in the Presbyterian Church in Ravenshoe. Fifty years on, they have just celebrated their Golden Anniversary with family and friends on the weekend of June 22, 2013 at the Walkamin Sporting Club. People travelled from all over the country to celebrate with them. Eighty guests journeyed from as far south as Sydney through to Cooktown in the north to attend the night’s festivities. Four of the seven bridal party members sat with Les and Jean at their bridal table on the night to help Les and Jean celebrate this important milestone in their life. The 50th Anniversary cake was baked in the shape of a horseshoe and decorated with roses and butterflies. Local musician and friend, Dave Kirk entertained the visitors as they danced the night away. Dave also sang his new song “For the Fallen” which he had performed that afternoon at the opening of the Avenue of Honour at Yungaburra. Jolene, Les and Jean’s young Granddaughter, was backed by Dave as she sang ‘Amazing Grace’ which was the couple’s Wedding Song.
The Lions Club of Atherton is enjoying the start of a new project the ‘Atherton Lions Sunday Market’ on the second Sunday of each month, 7am-12pm. We have over 40 stalls already making the commitment each month, and they enjoy the site at the Atherton Showgrounds even in the wet weather that we have experienced, we are looking forward to a fine day in August to really enjoy the morning of entertainment. The Club has increased its membership with 5 new members but suffered the loss of Lion Des Day a long serving member. We have been pleased to help
out some of the junior sporting organisations with donations to send away representatives, doing a couple of sausage sizzles at Bunnings and Harvey Normans (thanks to Suncorp and Bunnings for their support). With the new executive board being installed on the 13th of July, it kicks off a busy couple of months starting with the Lions hosting a 3 ball, 18 hole Charity Golf Day on the 21st of July with funds raised going to Meals on Wheels, nominations at the Atherton Golf Club. The Club will also assist the Atherton Lioness Club with a sausage sizzle after
their Mount Baldy Fun Run on the 18th of August, and helping the Maize festival committee with looking after the bar at the Maize Ball. We welcome anyone who would like to contribute to our community in anyway to come and meet like minded volunteers and enjoy the fellowship we all enjoy. The Atherton Lions meet at the International Club on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month, please contact Sandra Taske on 4091 3054.

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.
What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia?
Care Chiropractic Queensland donated $645.00 to the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation on Thursday, July 4. The money was raised at the Care Chiropractic Queensland ambrose golf day held at the Mareeba Golf Club on Sunday June 30. More than 55 golfers took part in the annual event with all proceeds going to the local foundation.
DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.
Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.
Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.
Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected. mareeba state School held their community fete on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the school grounds. The biannual community fete was a huge success with more than 1000 people attending. The event which raises money for the school had something for everyone of all ages including live entertainment, music, rides, fireworks and the popular tug-of-war competition.
When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Locations that start from July 2013 Barwon region of Victoria ......................People aged 0-64 Hunter region of NSW .............................People aged 0-64 South Australia .......................................Children aged 0-14 Tasmania .....................................Young people aged 15-24 Locations that start from July 2014 ACT ................................................................People aged 0-64 Barkly region of NT ...................................People aged 0-64 From July 2016, DisabilityCare Australia will continue to extend to more locations and age groups around Australia, including Queensland.

The LAND General freight increase welcome By Boyd Robertson A State Government Plan to increase the amount of general freight moved by rail lines has been welcomed by AgForce and Tablelands Canegrowers. The Moving Freight Strategy was released for industry consultation on June 26 by Scott Emerson, the Minister for Transport and Main Roads. The strategy hopes to relieve pressure on the state’s road network, particularly the Bruce Highway, by encouraging more ‘general freight’ to be moved by train instead of truck. General freight is distinguished from bulk freight, which in Queensland is mainly coal and mineral ore from mines in the state’s west in addition to agricultural product like grain, cattle and cane. The amount of freight, including both road and rail, moved every year in Queensland is expected to increase to from 881 million tonnes in 2010 to 1550 million tonnes in 2021, spurred on by a continuing resources boom and rising use of online shopping services. The plan calls for an upgrade to the
Queensland rail system, including the lengthening of passing loops and re-negotiation of priorities between passenger carriages and freight trains in Brisbane city. These upgrades could also assist in moving bulk freight more economically, including harvested cane. Tableland Cangegrowers manager Bronwyn Dwyer said cane was transported from the Tableland to the South Johnstone Mill by rail until prices became prohibitive in 2010. “There would be a benefit to have our agricultural produce back on the rail, provided it was affordable rail,” she said. “As far as road safety goes, it would be a good thing getting freight off the roads and back onto rail.” AgForce grains policy director Nina Murray said AgForce supported the plan but wanted to see further information. “We think this should have happened a long time ago,” she said. “It really remains to be seen whether or not it’s feasible – it will depend on the budget [allocated to the plan.” No cost estimates have been released for the plan as of yet.

Important visitor Independent chair of the Local Management Arrangements Working Group Leith Boully met with the Mareeba-Dimbulah channel irrigation scheme interim board for the first time last week. By Ryan Groube
T
he woman charged with overseeing the transition to locally managed irrigation schemes across Queensland travelled to Mareeba last week to meet with the local interim board. Leith Boully, a grazier and irrigator from Dirranbandi and a director of Murrumbidgee Irrigation, was appointed by Water and Energy Minister Mark McArdle in 2012 as the independent chair of the Local Management Arrangements Working Group. Mrs Boully, assisted by a team of eight, will provide information and support to eight interim boards across Queensland as they look to transition away from SunWater. The eight schemes that are investigating if cost savings can be found by managing the delivery locally include Theodore, Bundaberg, Burdekin-Haughton, Emerald, Eton, Lower Mary, Mareeba-Dimbulah and St George. In June, the interim board for the Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigation scheme was named with Joe Moro appointed of chair of the five person committee. Joining Mr Moro on the board are Tableland irrigators Brad Maisel and Maryann Salvetti, former SunWater engineer Brett Stevenson and water resources manager Murray Smith. On July 4, Mrs Boully met with the Mareeba-Dimbulah interim board for the first time. The focus of the meeting was the development of a business proposal for the scheme which must be submitted to government by November 30. As part of the business proposal the interim board will conduct an audit of the Mareeba-Dimbulah scheme which services about 1200 customers through a network of about 200 kilometres

of channels, 200 kilometres of pipelines and 60 kilometres of drains. Mrs Boully said she was confident the boards would be able to develop business plans that demonstrated local management could be successful. “While the due diligence process is complex and challenging, the Chairs and their boards are pragmatic, competent and positive about the opportunity that a move to local management offers. My role in this process is to provide assistance to these boards. If time lines look like slipping my team is there for support, if the boards need more information they can come to us.” Mr McArdle said the formation of the interim boards was a big step in the process. “In July 2012, the Queensland Government responded to calls from irrigators to move assets of the eight channel irrigation schemes to irrigator-owned and managed entities,” he said. “The proposals need to demonstrate how the channel schemes could realise significant benefits from local management and provide improved economic and environmental outcomes.” Key dates leading up to the business proposals include: July to September, : legal, engineering and financial due diligence conducted and October and November will see the business planning and proposals development. The independent project team will prepare a final report to government outlining the case for local management in either December 2013 or January 2014. The State Government will assess those proposals in the first quarter of 2014 with a decision on Local Management Arrangements to be made no later than May. Mr Moro warned however the process was still in its infancy and that a lot needed to be done to convince local irrigators the move would be in their best interest.

Queens light up annual Rodeo Ball By Boyd Robertson Glitz and glamour were on display at the Mareeba RSL on June 5 when the Mareeba Rodeo Queen entrants appeared at the Rodeo Ball. The entrants had previously made public appearances at Coles in Mareeba and Kerribee Park for the Cowpokes Competition. The Ball was an opportunity for the entrants to be introduced to the Mareeba business community alongside their sponsors in a formal setting. Each entrant was called to the stage and asked a question about themselves by MC Peter Brown before their sponsor place a ceremonial sash on them. The event was attended by about 200, including Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long and the Rodeo’s patron Deputy Mayor Evan McGrath. Music and entertainment on the night were provided by the Mr Smith Band, with the RSL providing catering. The Ball wrapped up at about 10:30pm. The entrants were judged at the
RSL at 9:30am the next day, with the anonymous judges taking into account their personality, presentation, poise, charisma and knowledge of the Rodeo. The winner of the competition will be announced and crowned Queen in a ceremony at the climax of the Mareeba Mazda Downtown Street Parade through Mareeba on Friday night. Mareeba Rodeo Secretary Angela Sturgess said the Ball had been very successful. “A great time was had by all - the guests thought the music by the Mr Smith Band was wonderful and brilliant,” she said. Ms Sturgess said although the Queen entrants had showed signs of anxiety they were becoming more confident in the public eye. “They looked extremely nervous walking up there,” she said. “They are still learning to smile and breathe and not look like they are about to be shot.” “The girls are growing accustomed to getting up in front of a crowd but nobody in their situation gets over those nerves that quickly.”

RM Williams CEO Hamish Turner said the Longhorn Express brought the outback experience into towns. “The very heart of the RM Williams brand lies in the Australian bush – the
company was built on the needs of people of the land and we uphold this tradition in all that we do,” he said. “The Longhorn Express is our very unique way of bringing RM Williams directly to you.” The trailer measures 19 metres long, 2.8 metres wide, 4.4 metres high and weighs 28 tons. It will be set up onsite at Kerribee Park over July 13-14. Reginald Murray Williams was born in 1908 at Belalie North, 200 kilometres from Adelaide. He rose from travelling swagman to millionaire through the manufacture and sale of bushwear before dying in 2003. His most successful product was his signature handcrafted elastic-sided boots, although the RM Williams company has recently attracted criticism for outsourcing the production of some products to China and Southeast Asia.

2013 MAREEBA RODEO JULY 12-14
Rodeo action all weekend!!
Grey nomads roll in ready for rodeo By Boyd Robertson
(07)
Kerribee Park will be swamped by caravans and motorhomes on as a horde of grey nomads descend upon the park for Mareeba Rodeo over July 13-14. The wrinkly wanderers are drawn not only by the fame and quality of the event but the warm, dry mid-year weather of the Tableland. Kerribee Park currently hosts about 200 vehicles compared to an average of about 40 in the quieter months. That number is expected to rise to the park’s capacity of about 450 over rodeos weekend, as it did in 2012. Nomad buildup for the Rodeo has also occurred faster than usual this year as many stick around after turning up for the hugely successful Rotary Field days held at the park in June. Veteran traveller and regular rodeo-goer Trevor Irwin and his wife Kathy have staked out a patch at Kerribee since May. They are also escaping the 4092 3555temperatures in their plunging hometown of Mitchell, between Roma and Charleville. Mr Irwin said Mareeba Rodeo was among the best in the country.
“It’s the main reason we’re here,” he said. “I’ve seen Mt Isa Rodeo and plenty of others and they just don’t compare to this one,” he said. “It flows – there’s always something happening in the ring, and they’ve always got a lot of stuff in the sideshows. “Plus there’s the Rodeo Queens who are always very pretty.” Fellow nomad Ella Dykes came up from Kiama on the New South Wales coast for both the Rodeo and the warmer air, which helps with her husband Cec’s lung condition. They also brought along their talkative 18-month-old galah Paulie, who constantly interrupted as The Express conducted the interview with Ms Dykes. “We’ve been coming up here for four years now,” Ms Dykes said. “Every time we do, we grab a program and head over to see the Rodeo – we particularly enjoy the sideshows. “We love it up here – we’ve made a lot of friends and the air is much better for Cec’s lungs.” Mr and Ms Dykes would have normally stayed until the end of September but will have to depart at the start of that month for family commitments back home.
What’s on!
Grey nomad Ella Dykes and her galah Paulie (pictured) have checked in at Kerribee Park for both Mareeba Rodeo and the warm Tablelands weather.

Well once again Northcote played host to a group of the Cairns to Karumba Bike Riders (The Dirty Boyz) for lunch on Sunday 23rd June, and this year there were even more riders wishing to load heaps of pain on themselves. Both Ruth and I would like to publicly thank those who supported us in supplying their lunch. Apart from Mackeral Man, Atherton IGA, Russo’s Butchery, Mitre 10 Atherton and 1800 Windows, a special thank you must also go to all our friends who helped prepare and serve the meal. Without your help we could not have done it. Martin and Ruth Tilney.
What’s coming up!

Tennis, American style The Rodeo Queens were prettier than the tennis as the Mareeba Tennis Club hosted its annual American tournament on July 6. Sponsored by the Mareeba Rodeo, the quirky doubles event sees individuals paired with a partner for four games before switching with an opponents player. All up four eight-game sets are played with each player keeping track of the number of games they won. Played under clear skies a strong wind made conditions difficult for players. Casey Herbohn was the leading male, winning 26 games. Matthew Palmer was runner-up with 20 game wins. Narelle Duncan was the best of the women winning 20 games while Carl Martens won the junior division. For the first time, Rodeo Queens entrants attended to hand out prizes.

Gladiators take NRL centre stage By Boyd Robertson For a brief moment, The Mareeba Gladiators Under 11s team could imagine they were professional NRL players as they ran onto the field at Dairy Farmers Stadium in front of thousands of cheering fans. The boys won this incredible opportunity by reaching the grand finals of the Laurie Spina Shield, held at the Townsville Leagues Club over June 29 – 30. From a pool of 64 teams from all over North Queensland, the junior Gladiators reached the finals unbeaten, winning eight games back-toback. At the grand final, however, they just missed out on the title, going down against the Townsville Central team 16-12. Player Tyrone Strickland, 10, said the loss stung because Mareeba had the momentum at close of play. “If we had five more minutes, we would have won,” he said.
The team’s disappointment at losing the game was balanced out by the honour of being allowed to open the Cowboys - Sharks A Grade game on June 30, also running a lap of honour around the field before a crowd of about 10,000. Junior Gladiators coach Les Strickland said the Under 11s had lived up to their motto of ‘Little town, big heart’ and deserved every second of the limelight. “The boys did very good – they ended up representing the entire Cairns region because they beat all the teams from up here,” he said. “They’re a credit to the club and to their parents – we’re all very proud of them. “They ran out onto the field with their hands up in the air and the crowd was cheering for them – you could hear them going ‘Mareeba, Mareeba, Mareeba!’ Tyrone said the run onto the field let him imagine he was a rugby star. “I really liked running out of the tunnel,” he said.

“I thought I was actually playing for the Cowboys.” The Laurie Spina Shield was established in 1997 and named after the Cowboys’ first captain. Strickland said he and the players wished to thank the Mareeba Leagues club for their support and assistance to the team.
Ivanov secures breakthrough title By Boyd Robertson Mareeba boxing star Jason Ivanov has won another hard-fought victory, picking up the Golden Gloves title in Cairns on June 29. Ivanov, 22 years old and weighing in at 80 kilograms, faced off against the taller Brent Moore from Mackay on the standalone fight night, open to experienced fighters. Outranged, Ivanov relied on his speed and agility to slip inside, unleash devastating combination and dance out before Moore could retaliate. It was by no means an easy fight, with the decision narrowly going to Ivanov on points after four brutal two-minute rounds. Landing an impressive rapid-fire combo
late in the final round helped him seal the win. It was the first time Ivanov, part of the Team Mareeba Boxing stable under trainers Ross Cardillo and David Moloney, had won the Golden Gloves. The fighter praised the abilities of his opponent when speaking to The Express. “He’s definitely an experienced fighter and he has really long arms,” Ivanov said. “I just tried to get through his right to duck under the other punches, get in there and get a couple of hits in then get out. “I was pretty wrecked by the end of it all, I just had to bite down on the mouthguard and keep going.” In Ivanov’s corner on the night was trainer Ken Cotterill, who praised both Moore’s hardi-

Edge Hill’s young midfield brigade was no match for the Mareeba Bulls as the home side ran out comfortable 5-0 winners at Borzi Park on Saturday. Edge Hill coach Paul Dillon said he new the match would be a “battle” for his side. “Mareeba is a class act, we’ve known that since the beginning of the year. They are the best team in the league and they showed that again today,” he said. “I told the boys when we were coming up here that we would be going up against the strongest midfield we’ll play against with two Queensland State League players and an A League player. “The experience for our players was good, the result not so good.” Mareeba Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said he continued to be pleased that the side wasn’t conceding any goals. “It was a great [attacking] performance but I am more pleased that we aren’t conceding goals,” he said. The Mareeba Bulls travel to Redlynch at the weekend.
ness and Ivanov’s performance. “Jason hit him [Moore] with some rocking shots and he didn’t go down, although he told me afterwards that he’d never been hit that hard before,” Cotterill said. “Jason has good natural movement, he’s agile and fast – plus he’s built like a tank. “What’s remarkable is he had a leg injury at work before the fight – he rolled a muscle in his leg and still managed to win this fight on the weekend.” Ivanov now has his sights set squarely on the State titles in September and the National titles beyond that. “I think I’m in with a pretty good shot [with the titles],” he said. “I’ve beaten guys who have won those before.”
The Mareeba Gladiators have overcome a huge half time deficit to beat second placed Southern Suburbs in a thriller. Trailling 8-30 at half time, the ‘Gators stormed home to prevail 36-34. Jahman Gela bagged a double while Keripo Gutchen Gele, Azar Gutchen, Jason Lea and Rod Jensen also scored. Reserve grade won a dour encounter 14-6 while the under 18s went down 28-30.
Roosters rolled the Atherton Roosters continued a worrying trend of fading out of matches in the second half, falling 46-6 against the Edmonton Storm. The Roosters were first to score and were the better side in the opening 20 minutes. At half time the Storm had established a narrow 12-6 lead. The second half however was a non-contest with the Storm piling on six tries to none to run out comfortable winners. No reserve grade game was played while the Roosters under 18s fell 44-16.
Boxing success Elijah “The Warrior” Taylor has added an Amatuer Golden Gloves title to his swelling trophy cabinet. Taylor is now a two time Australian champion and four time Queensland champ. In the past three years he has prevalied over five Australian champions. Taylor is now targetting Commonwealth Games selection.
