Tough call for

TRC By Katherine Kokkonen

Local rider Kurt Shephard, seen here riding Fright Night at the 2013 APRA Rodeo finals, will be competing at the Eureka Creek Rodeo this weekend.

Eureka! It’s rodeo time! Hundreds are expected to flock to Eureka Creek this weekend for their inaugural rodeo where the bulls and broncs will be kicking up the dirt. TURN TO SPORT FOR THE FULL STORY.

GETTING back in the black has led Tablelands Regional Council down a tough path of cost cutting measures. Mayor Rosa Lee Long said council had seen revenues fall below expenditures and the measures were a way of securing the council’s longterm financial viability. At last week’s council meeting, TRC endorsed a plan to return to surplus by the 2016-17 Budget. Some of the tough measures include not filling vacant positions, offering voluntary redundancies and decreases in services. “We have chosen a very tough path, but it is the only one that provides the kind of result that gives an on-going solution,” Cr Lee Long said. “Robbing our cash reserves would have been a short term solution that would have left ratepayers with a financially unsustainable council not too many years down the track. “Instead we are taking the difficult and painful path that avoids that trap. The community may well see service levels fall. But it is necessary pain as a result of taking the

responsible decisions.” TRC staff will be offered voluntary redundancy packages, but should further reductions in staff numbers be required additional redundancies will be carried out. “This may mean reductions to some Council services or possibly the removal of some services entirely,” Acting CEO Matthew Hyde said. “This will be undertaken in a considered manner to ensure a balance between availability of services and the cost to the ratepayer.” Part of the review of operations will be the combination of service centres in Malanda and Herberton with existing library services, effective from June, 30. Malanda and Herberton service centres deal with six to nine customer-facing requests daily, while more than 60% of rates payments were being made online or via Australia Post, according to Mr Hyde. “Both communities will receive a reduced number of hours of customer service. The hours of operations reflect the number of counter enquiries at each facility,” Mr Hyde said. “No buildings, depots or other CONTINUED P5

The team... Val Shannon is this year’s Face of Relay for Life. By Katherine Kokkonen

MANAGING EDITOR Carl Portella

ACCOUNT MANAGER Natasha Srhoj

WITHIN the space of less than six months Val Shannon went from being diagnosed with cancer to beating it, yet he still doesn’t consider himself a true cancer survivor. It wasn’t until he took on the role as the Face of Relay for Life that he realised he fit the term. “It wasn’t until this and when somebody told me that I’m a cancer survivor that I went ‘oh yeah, I am’,” he said. He attributed this to the fact that it

took less than six months from diagnosis to having surgery and that he also did not have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation. “It was so quick and I’m back here and I’m working again and everything is just the same that I haven’t felt that different,” he said. Mr Shannon, 62, went in for his annual check-up, last year, when his Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood level results came back with a higher reading. His PSA blood levels had been increasing over five years and Mr Shan-

he said. “That’s the majority of the cancer cases, but in my case the doctor gave me an 85% chance of living for another five years and a 65% chance of living for another 10 years. It was all a bit surreal because I didn’t feel sick.” Mr Shannon compared the surgery to having his appendix out and was back at work three weeks after being on the operating table. The Relay for Life will be held on September 13 and 14 at Davies Park in Mareeba.

non’s doctor recommended he go to Brisbane for an MRI, so he could access robotic keyhole surgery in case he needed his prostate removed. The MRI showed a shadow in the prostate gland and following a biopsy and diagnosis of high-grade cancer Mr Shannon underwent surgery in March to have his prostate removed. “It’s the man’s version of breast cancer, but sometimes with the man thing you can have such a slow acting cancer in your prostate gland that you’ll die of old age before it gives you any issues,”

Service Manager Lesley Magian said as a not-for-profit organisation, Blue Care appreciated the support and generosity of local community groups. “Blue Care is very grateful for the Mareeba Lioness Club’s donation, and for the assistance it will provide our residents,” she said. “This donation will allow our residents to sit and enjoy the outdoors or relax with other residents or family and other visitors on their patios. “It’s the extras like these that help Blue Care maintain our residents’ quality of life across more than 80 locations.”

Food made with love By Carl Portella

Former Mareeba local Michael Martino, author of The Calabrian Way – Food from the Heart, officially launched his book on Saturday May, 7 at the annual Festa Della Republica in Cairns. “We have been working on this book for ten years, Maria and I have always been food people and with all that our parents taught us about food and how we saw it prepared and cooked we thought, wouldn’t it be nice to get all these recipes into a book, and that’s how it all started,” Michael explained. “We travelled to our parents home town, took all the photos and married them with the nostalgia of the recipes.” The Calabrian Way is a collection of authentic southern Italian recipes often cooked by his mother, Franceschina Martino and mother-in-law Delma DeRose who have been cooking since they were children. Both were born in the small town of Fagnano Castello in the mountainous region of Calabria in southern Italy. They both later immigrated

to Australia to start a better life where they settled in the Mareeba/Dimbulah district of far north Queensland and worked on tobacco farms along with their husbands and children. Franceschina and Delma did not know each other in Fagnano, but little did they know that Michael would later marry Delma’s daughter, Maria, and through marriage a special bond developed and to this day their journey continues with united families. The traditional wood fired oven in the back shed would fast become renowned for Franceschina Martino, author Michael Martino his wife Maria making the best Pitta e` Pane and mother in-law Delma DeRose. in Mareeba. Sigh of relief for pensioners PENSIONERS are breathing a sigh of relief after the state government backpedalled on cuts to pensioner concessions. Two days after releasing their budget, the state government relented and will maintain the funding for pensioner and senior concessions. “Pensioners and older Queenslanders have told us that they simply can’t wear the cost of filling the gap between Queensland’s increased contribution, and the Commonwealth Government’s concessions cuts and increased fees and taxes,” Premier Campbell Newman said. Mareeba resident Joan Moore relies solely on the pension and was “quiet relieved” to find out she

would still be able to access concessions. “I think they cracked by listening to the news this morning,” she said about the government’s reversal of the cuts. “These blokes seem to change their mind like they change their underwear – they make promises and break them like it means nothing.” While concessions would still be available, Ms Moore was not letting her guard down when it comes to her pension. “We have to fight for it and have to fight to keep it,” she said. COTA Queensland Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans said the news was also good for veterans, people with disability and single parents, who rely on state

government concessions for access to electricity, water, and transport. “The Queensland Government needs to work with the Australian Government, as well as other states and territories, to forge a lasting agreement about the Pensioner Concession Card and the role of government in maintaining a safety net for people on fixed, low incomes,” he said. The Australian Pensioners’ and Superannuants’ League State Secretary Raymond Ferguson welcomed the government’s decision. “In restoring the cuts to pensioner and seniors concessions and rebates, the Government recognise and acknowledge that pensioners and seniors could not bear the brunt of such cuts,” he said.

Rural families and primary producers will benefit from better responses from the Stock and Rural Crime Investigation Squad officers following the delivery of a brand new vehicle to Mareeba. Police Minister Jack Dempsey and Agriculture Minister John McVeigh said a strong plan to support policing in rural and regional areas would create a brighter future for Queensland. “We will be delivering three purpose built cattle trucks for members of the Stock and Rural Crime Squad in Mareeba, Toowoomba, and Rockhampton,” Mr Dempsey said. “These vehicles will allow officers to conduct proactive musters and use new reformed stock laws to assist graziers across the state, providing a more secure industry for the future. “The recently passed laws allow stock squad officers to use increased penalties to deter rural crime.”

Agriculture Minister and Member for Toowoomba North John McVeigh said the new vehicles would provide a boost to producers in far north Queensland. “The trucks will also be available to transport resources and equipment during natural disasters or to remote locations for search and rescue operations,” he said. Detective Inspector Mick Dowie said the trucks met all the needs of the squad for the future. “SARCIS investigates the theft of around two thousand head of cattle annually along with sheep, goats and horses,” Detective Inspector Mick Dowie said. “At times, we can be managing hundreds of stock exhibits and we abide by the same animal welfare and bio-security management requirements as all pastoralists. “The enactment of the new stock legislation, coupled with this significant investment in our equipment, reinforces our commitment to providing professional policing services to rural and remote Queenslanders.”

Creepy field day

Thomas Mylrea, 8, is captivated during the water bug monitoring activity at the Healthy Kids Healthy Waterways field day at Mareeba Wetlands. CREEPY crawlies, a boat tour and recycling were on the cards for schoolkids at the Healthy Waterways field day. Almost 90 Children, aged 8-12 years old, attended the first field day to be held at the Mareeba Wetlands, on Friday, May 30. Northern Gulf Resource Management Group Education Officer Erica Blumson said the day was designed to get kids engaged with seven different activities offered. Activities looked at how to keep waterways clean, prevent erosion,

wildlife, sustainable fishing and water bug monitoring. Ms Blumson believed teaching kids about the environment set-up a good foundation for when they are older. “They’ll be more open to better ways of looking after our environment and better ways of farming,” she said. “The idea is to educate them on environmental issues in a fun and interactive way and with hands-on experiences. Success would be for kids to say they had the best day ever and want to come next year.”

and other state government grants, lower state funding available for capital projects and road maintenance, the loss of economies of scale as a result of de-amalgamation and significant increases in costs such as electricity and insurance. “Being proactive now will lead to far better results than waiting until later, when more

challenging decisions may have to be considered,” he said. Cr Lee Long said TRC had already taken measures to reduce expenditure, including selling down their fleet inventory, not filling nonvital positions and managing staff leave. Park gets approval for ‘bush camp’ stays INCREASING demand for “bush camp” style stays has led to the approval for the development of a motor home park in Mareeba. Council endorsed the material change of use application for the development of a motor home park on Fichera Road, at last week’s Mareeba Shire Council meeting, “The motor home park is proposed in response to the ever increasing demand of self-sufficient travellers looking for ‘bush camp’ style stays,” Mayor Tom Gilmore

said. “The site will also be able to accommodate motor home chapters, which is wonderful. It will be a welcome development especially during the peak tourist season.” The maximum length of stay in the motor home park will be five consecutive days, but it is expected the general length of stay will be one to two days. The proposed motor home park will cater for self-contained motor homes only and will be limited to a designated motor home

Visit from Today crew a boost for Kuranda TOURISTS are already flocking to Kuranda after the village’s attractions were featured on the Today show. Weathergirl Emma Freedman and the Today crew filmed from Kuranda, last Thursday, and visited the village’s attractions, including the Koala Gardens and Birdworld. Tourism Kuranda Executive Officer Marc Sleeman said the filming showcased the community and had already inspired southerners to come north for winter. “The commercial value of those 16 minutes is the equivalent of $2 million dollar in return,” he said. “It’s great because you’re getting instant results from promoting Kuranda and the region; we’ve already received emails from strategic partners that they had bookings that morning as a result of people seeing the show.” The Today show filming was part of the Drive North Queensland Campaign with the film crew in the region for four days.

Two big drug ops closed

By Katherine Kokkonen

Today weathergirl Emma Freedman gets close to a feathered friend in Kuranda.

MONTHS of hard work paid off for police with the closure of two significant operations resulting in 19 people charged with 69 offences Detectives from the Far North District Drug Squad, Far North District Crime Group and Taskforce Maxima have this week closed two significant operations targeting the supply of dangerous drugs throughout Far North Queensland. The closure saw the execution of 22 search warrants at Mareeba, Cairns, Yungaburra, Mission Beach and Dimbulah resulting in the seizure of firearms, dangerous drugs and a motor vehicle. As part of the operations, police charged 19 people with 69 offences including trafficking, supply and production of dangerous drugs and possession of firearms as well as fraud involving identity theft. The operations were targeted at the drug supply networks of known members of the Bandidos Criminal Gang. Two of those arrested were patched members, one of which is the current Sergeant-atarms of the Bandidos Mission Beach Chapter. “The success of this week’s operation has come about due the hard work and ongoing commitment of the local drug squad,” Taskforce Commander Michael Niland of Taskforce Maxima said. Darcy McKittrick, 6, will soon be having fun at the skate park while being under surveillance.

Kids under surveillance By Katherine Kokkonen

Left: Litter at the skatepark

SKATE park users will be placed under surveillance in an effort to crack down on littering, anti-social behaviour and vandalism. “It is the responsibility of council to curb vandalism and other anti-social behaviour whenever possible,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “We see the CCTV cameras as a safety net, and whilst they won’t stop vandalism and bullying, if it makes some people think twice before committing those acts, then they have an important role to play.” Simon McKittrick takes his son Darcy, 6, to the skate park and said it would be better to give kids direction rather than have cameras monitor them. He said installing cameras would give kids the impression that they are seen as troublemakers and would encourage, rather than discourage, them to misbehave. “They are just going about it the wrong way – they’re putting more and more rules in place when kids don’t need more rules, they need examples,” he said. “The kids are mucking around and just being kids and they’re doing

that because they have no outlet half the time.” At the council meeting, last Wednesday, Councillor Jenny Jensen expressed concern the cameras would not be successful. “Research will show that putting cameras in won’t improve the behaviour,” she said. “The root cause needs to be dealt with. I think it’s a reactive approach and not necessarily a productive approach.” While council discussed the costs of hiring a youth worker compared to the cost of CCTV, Mayor Tom Gilmore said council was not “social police”. “We don’t have the resources to deal with all the issues in the community,” he said. Funding for CCTV will initially cost $16,275. Cr Jensen said she would like to see funding for the CCTV not come from ratepayers but rather from another source as this was a “law and order issue”. Cr Allan Holmes supported the installation of CCTV as a way of improving the skate park and making it

theregion Chillagoe Centre Celebrations

Chillagoe Courthouse Heritage Centre has celebrated its one year anniversary with a ceremony, lunch and even some rap music.

Volunteer Julie Lehmann said more than 100 people joined the celebration with entertainment including Magistrate Tom Braes donning a wig to perform in a skit with locals in the roles of cattle rustlers. Local school children also performed a poetry reading and a free lunch was put on for the celebrations. “I was really surprised, people come out the woodwork from everywhere to Chillagoe,” she said. “There was a young man from Sydney, who did a rap session. He was 25 and looked about 16 and was working with autistic kids and rap songs were about awareness.” Ms Lehmann said the highlight for her was the new display panels around the building, which will enable people to learn about the history of the area. “It’s kind of like a second opening. It would not have happened without Mary Bolam’s original vision and steadfast work,” she said. “We exist with tourism now, we depend on visitors, and it’s another attraction for them to come and see.” Pictured above left: Magistrate Tom Braes dons a wig and a stern look during a skit at the Chillagoe Court House Centre one year anniversary celebrations.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift encourages Far North Queensland women to help in the fight against women’s cancers.

Metrogaine 2014

Get the girls together to stay together

The statistics are sobering – around two women every day in Far North Queensland receive the shattering news that they have breast or gynaecological cancer. Sadly more than 60 local women will die from these cancers this year – that’s someone’s mum, sister, relative or friend. Far North Queensland women - I’m calling on you – let’s fight back against a disease that too much! Cancer Council Queensland has launched a new campaign to Take on Women’s Cancers all year round, helping Far North Queensland women reduce their cancer risk and detect cancer early. The cause has never been more important. One in two Queensland women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Around 4000 Queenslanders will be diagnosed with women’s cancers this year alone. Taking on Women’s Cancers encapsulates all of our Pink Fundraising events including Pink Ribbon Day, Pink events and Walk 4 Breast Cancer. Far North Queenslanders are invited to Take on Women’s Cancers in a number of ways throughout the year, including purchasing Pink merchandise volunteering on Pink Ribbon Day, hosting a Pink fundraising event such as Girls’ Night In or registering for the Cairns Walk 4 Breast Cancer. Getting the girls together and getting

involved in these events is not only a lot of fun, but will make a real difference to those affected by breast of gynaecological cancers through prevention programs, support services and world class research. It might seem like a simple act – hosting an event, making a donation or buying some merchandise – but every dollar raised gives hope for better treatments, hope for more survivors, and hope for a cancer free future. Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer diagnosed in Far North Queensland women and around 150 will be diagnosed with the disease this year. It’s imperative for all women to be breast aware and remain vigilant about their health. To help detect breast cancer early, mammographic screening every two years is recommended for women aged 50-69 years. If every eligible woman had a Pap smear every two years, 90 per cent of cervical cancers could be prevented. All women aged 18 to 70 years who have ever been sexually active should get screened. What are you waiting for? Get the girls together now to keep the girls together later. More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available via Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au.

Car park upgrade Charter Hall, the owner and manager of Tablelands Village, has commenced upgrade works on the centre’s car park to provide its shoppers with an enhanced shopping experience. The car park upgrade will involve ground levelling and installation of shade sails. Tablelands Village Centre Manager Jason Barrett commented: “We are committed to providing an enjoyable and convenient shopping experience at Tablelands Village, and the car park enhancements are an important part in creating this for our customers. “Tablelands Village will remain open for trade during the works, with only a small area of the car park to be closed during this time. Measles Dr Richard Gair, Director Tropical Public Health Services Cairns has confirmed a case of measles in a student at Edge Hill State School. The child attended the school for one day last week. Measles is a highly infectious disease and can have serious complications. Vaccination against measles is very effective in preventing the disease and is recommended for all children and for adults who are not immune. Those who are not immune to measles are being excluded from school and asked to remain at home in case they develop the disease and spread it to others. Measles symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red inflamed eyes and a rash. The rash comes out around four days after onset of illness when the fever is still present. Measles is infectious for around eight to nine days after the onset of illness. If you suspect that you or your child has measles you should contact your doctor by phone and arrange to be seen. Do not go directly to the surgery as if you do have measles you may infect others in the waiting room. Vaccination is the best way to prevent measles. Anyone who has not had two measles containing vaccinations, or who is not sure, is strongly encouraged to consult their doctor. The measles vaccine is free to those born after 1966. Typically, the vaccine is administered at 12 and 18 months.

The activities continue on at the Men’s Shed. Some of the men were involved in the recent Great Wheelbarrow Race by being the support crew for the “Countdown Legends” team. They enjoyed the trek and were glad it was not them having to push the wheelbarrow. Pictured is Kent Duffield and Cec Ayliffe holding our banner before the start of the Great Wheelbarrow Race. The workshop continues to be developed as we use the funds we received recently from Mareeba & Dimbulah Community Bank. Wood working lathes are getting set in place to be used to create some master pieces. Our next big event will be held on Thursday June 12. As part of Men’s Health Week we will be presenting information in regards to Falls Prevention for older men. This is an event we are running in conjunction with Mareeba Community Health. The morning begins at 9.30am at our shed in Lloyd Street, Mareeba and concludes with a hearty, healthy lunch. We will have a team of experts on hand to in-

THE STRONGEST & SMARTEST CHOICE QUEENSLAND’S PLAN FOR SECURE FINANCES AND A STRONG ECONOMY NEW SCHOOLS HOSPITAL UPGRADES NEW ROADS NEW HIGHWAYS

After receiving a record number of ‘People’s Budget’ submissions, the Queensland Government has announced a strong plan to fix our debt and interest problems. We’ve already cut waste, now our plan includes the sale or lease of some assets. The government has already addressed waste and inefficiency and implemented a plan to run government services more effectively. As a consequence, reducing services has been ruled out. With so many Queensland families feeling increased cost of living pressures, raising taxes to reduce debt has also been ruled out.

HOW YOU HAD YOUR SAY ON QUEENSLAND’S DEBT AND INTEREST PROBLEMS Since February, more than 70,000 Queenslanders have collectively tackled the unprecedented threat to our future prosperity: our $80 billion debt and the $4 billion in interest, or ‘dead money’, that we pay each year. Never before in Australia has there been this level of public consultation about the economic choices facing a community. • 37 days of public information from 13 April to 19 May • 24/7 ‘People’s Budget’ interactive tool

Not everyone will agree with every part of our plan, but Queenslanders do agree that strong choices are essential to fund the schools, hospital upgrades, roads and highways we need for Queensland’s growing future.

of fireworks both emotional and visual, when it comes to the betrayal of Maleficent, the beautiful fairy who rules the forest. Sharlto Copley is effective as the deceitful traitor whose ambitions to be king prompt his unconscionable stealing of Maleficent’s powerful wings: the wings that carry her high into the clouds, keeping her strong and infallible. The wings, like Maleficent’s swan-shaped black horns are a striking accessory. Sam Riley as Diaval, who becomes Maleficent’s wings, is terrific; Maleficent playfully changes him into a bird, a dog, a horse and a dragon at will, as the situation requires it. Imelda Staunton, Leslie Mann and Juno Temple provide some light humour as the three fairies who raise the young Princess Aurora and the image of Elle Fanning, as the princess, under a blanket of multi-coloured autumn leaves in the forest is an indelibly lovely one. Fanning is delightful, perfectly embodying the young Princess gifted with beauty and happiness. The magic of the film is that the visual effects blend seamlessly into the reality, while Dean Semler’s cinematography uses light and dark to describe good and evil. The textures of the forest, with its giant tree-folk, colourful flowers, elves, goblins and fairies are intricately woven into the essence of the tale, while James Newton Howard’s melodic score wraps the package into one highly enjoyable gift. Janet McTeer provides the effective narration – her character not revealed until the film’s end.

Queenslanders can reduce their risk of cancer by making some simple lifestyle changes, as Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan explains.

(MA15+)

Reduce your risk

It’s Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and with that comes an important reminder to consider how we can all help reduce our personal risk of cancer. Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is the second biggest cancer killer in Queensland. Early detection through recommended screening is vital – and could save your life. Queenslanders aged over 50 are encouraged to take part in the National Bowel Screening program, and talk to their GP about their risks. The program, currently available to all Australians aged 50, 55, 60 and 65, is a simple faecal occult blood test which can be done in the privacy of your own home. Only 3 in 10 eligible Queenslanders are currently completing the test, but even on those figures the screening program is set to prevent more than 14,000 bowel cancer deaths in the state over the next 40 years. Raising awareness about early detection and preventing cancer is a vital part of Relay For Life, and we want to encourage relayers to participate in recommended screening to prevent cancer where possible. Up to one third of all cancers can be prevented with healthy lifestyle choices, which goes to show that our

daily choices about what we do, and what we consume, could potentially save our life. For many cancers, including bowel cancer, quitting smoking, being active, enjoying a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and maintaining a healthy body weight can all contribute to reducing your risk. Risk factors for bowel cancer can also include age, family history, inflammatory bowel disease, and poor overall health. We know that bowel cancer kills almost 1000 Queenslanders every year, and 90 per cent of these deaths are preventable with early detection. So this month, take the time to visit your GP, get tested and encourage your friends and family to do the same. For more information on bowel cancer call Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 or visit www.bowelcancer.org.au. Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on September 13-14 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register visit relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

there on Friday,” he said. “The attitude wasn’t there and they didn’t really turn up to play. “There needs to be a big shift in attitude and more commitment to play basic football.” The Gladiators will take on Mossman Port Douglas Sharks this Saturday at Mareeba with games starting from 2.30pm.

Tableland Hockey weekend round-up The long weekend saw only the Seniors take to the field in fast, action packed games. The Knights faced off against the Bombers with Paul Nasser, Brendan Geraghty and Callan Parsons playing some great hockey for the Bombers. Unfortunately the Knights were too strong, with Paul Hubner dominant in the box and supported by Stew Duck, Tom Vidler and Steve Monty the Knights won 5-1. A convincing win for the White Knights, but a great show of determination by the Bombers. Shed Boss Shamrocks took on the might of the K9’s in a tough challenge. Both goalies showed great skill in defence and made some fantastic saves in what was a fast and competitive game. Taking advantage of the whole field the K9’s dominated in both halves with Jason Crear scoring a hat trick of goals. Final score was 7-2 to the K9’s. In the Ladies, Pluckers faced off against Shooters. Scoreless at half time,

both sides were dominant in defence. Taking the field after half time, Pluckers scored a convincing goal within the first five minutes and then scored again toward the end of the game winning 2-0. Tahlia Vermeer and Kelli Peressini were the stand out players for Pluckers. Shooters were unlucky not to convert a number of close balls in the circle with Erin Muller, Brooke Ainsley and Chrissie Mehmet on top of their game. In the Veterans games Waterloo took on Woteva in a great game and won 5-2. Helen Harris was once again dominant on the field scoring five goals. Woteva held their own with Laurie Henley and Leanne Godfrey scoring a goal a piece for Woteva. Totally Holcim and Plastered Vets hotly contested the 60 minutes with neither team able to dominant and drawing two all. Elaine Phillips and Sam Schermer scored for Plastered Vets while Chrissie Mehmet and Maria Kiely also put a goal a piece in the box for Totally Holcim.

All go for first rodeo ADRENALINE will be pumping when man versus beast at the Eureka Creek Rodeo, this weekend. A crowd of 500 spectators and competitors is expected to attend the inaugural Eureka Creek Rodeo. Local competitors will battle it out with competitors travelling from interstate for the event. The Nugget of the North Campdraft Inc Committee has been working towards the rodeo since October last year. Event Coordinator Tammy Sivyer said many people worked hard to make the event a reality, including rodeo organiser Dan Miller who built the arena. “It is our maiden voyage and has involved a lot of work,” she said. “All sorts of people have pitched in because it is a big job with catering, the bar, cleaners and front-gate entry people.” The main drawcard in the arena will be the bucking events with competitors testing their skills against bulls and broncs. Ms Tammy Sivyer said spectators

can expect an electric atmosphere during the competition, especially on Saturday night. “The hair stands up on the back of your neck,” she said. “We will have the best of the bulls and the best of the horses. “It’s a bit of an adrenaline rush, even if you’re a spectator.” While the riders may get most of the glory, Ms Sivyer also took her hat off to the rodeo clowns, who play integral roles in ensuring the safety of the riders. “They are awesome sportsmen and really fit and put their lives on the line to save the riders,” she said. Aspiring champions will also get their turn on Saturday morning with junior events, including poddy riding and barrel racing featuring in the arena. The evening’s festivities will kick off at 6.30 when Dimbulah school children sing the national anthem. The entertainment will be followed by a parade in the arena and the bucking events.

Bowled over at Championships held in a metropolitan city, had come to Mareeba for the first time. In the lead-up to the Championships, Mr Lynne was kept busy organising the event with Australian Deaf Lawn Bowls Acting Administrator Tony Gorringe. He signed that the Mareeba Bowls Club had worked tirelessly to ensure the Championships took place and ran smoothly. “I’m very happy it is here at home and am thankful for all the support and the fact that we are out of the city,” he signed. Teams looking for slam dunk in finals ATHLETES will be limbering up for the grand finals of the Mareeba Winter Season Basketball competition this Thursday. Young Under 12’s Junior teams Taipans and Dragons will strive for championship honours in the opening grand final at 4.00pm. These youngsters are sure to provide great entertainment for spectators with a close result likely. Eagles Under 14’s Junior team will prove hard to defeat in their championship decider. No doubt Hawks will require an outstanding team performance in order to overcome the Eagles’ combination. Supporters can expect to witness a number of promising Juniors in this encounter. The Under 16’s grand final between Panthers and Timberwolves could well prove a real cliff hanger. Ayden Smith holds the key to a Panthers’ victory, while Timberwolves will look to Jacob Bishop and Lochlan Anthony to lead the

way to Grand Final success. Baiada Steggles and Gummaz will contest their second consecutive championship decider. A closely contested encounter should eventuate, although the undefeated Baiada Steggles side are slight favourites to win the Senior Ladies championship. Maria Matu, Anna Newlands, Tua and Mou Aue have played strongly during the season and are vital players for Baiada Steggles to continue on their winning way. However Gummaz can seriously challenge Baiada Steggles for the championship title, providing Rosina Gutchen, Natasha Grogan, Angie Goodyear and Kendiland Hunter can all produce their best basketball on Thursday night. Eurostars and Stingrays clash in the Senior Men’s grand final. Certainly with a number of outstanding players on both sides, the crowd should be entertained with an excellent display of basketball. Eurostars have potential match winners

in David Schmidt, Domenico Sglavo, Luke Libke and Alessandro Campo. While good performances from David Hawke, Brendan Ebner and Brock Hawke can place Stingrays on the road to success. Invite your family and friends along to the grand final on June, 12 starting at 4.00pm at PCYC Sports Hall, Walsh Street, Mareeba for a great, fun, entertaining show of basketball. The grand finals are coming on the back of the Inter-Town Carnival held in Atherton on May, 31. The Mareeba teams acquitted themselves well playing against sides from three other Associations. Participation by Mareeba in the carnival came with surprising results and has been a great experience for many Mareeba players who competed for the first time in Inter-Town Competition. Mareeba will host the next InterTown Carnival later in the year.

The Inter-own Carnival was a great experience for the Mareeba basketball teams.
