Voters turn against Katter

By Boyd Robertson

B

ob Katter has spoken exclusively to The Express in the aftermath of a stunning swing against him in his home electorate of Kennedy during Saturday’s federal election, claiming the Liberal National Party (LNP) “spent millions of dollars” attempting to take the seat. Kennedy remains in deadlock with Mr Katter and the LNP’s Noeline Ikin virtually tied on the two-party preferred vote. Although major media outlets have called the seat for Mr Katter by a narrow margin, neither he nor Ms Ikin has claimed victory yet. Voters turned against Mr Katter in droves on Saturday night, with a 15.8 per cent swing to the Coalition, the largest in any seat across the country. Ms Ikin captured more than 40 per cent of the primary vote, with only preferences saving Mr Katter from a wipeout. Postal votes, pre-polling and preferences will now determine the outcome for the seat, with a final count not expected for several days. At the time of writing, Mr Katter holds 52.5 per cent of the two-party preferred vote and Ms Ikin holds 47.5 per cent with 110 of Kennedy’s 133 booths counted. Ms Ikin’s camp has dispatched staff to Mt Isa polling stations to scrutinise recounts there, while Mr Katter has said he will do the same. Mr Katter was predicted to hold Kennedy by a very comfortable majority, and the battering spells dark times ahead for the fledgling Katter’s Australian Party (KAP). Mr Katter gave his only post-election interview to The Express Cont. P2

Heavy Liberal advertising to blame, says Katter and admitted that the LNP did serious damage to his party despite failing to unseat him on election night. “We copped an absolute battering – a giant boot has come down and smashed us,” he said. “Millions of dollars have been spent to run an enormously effective campaign against us – the Liberals have successfully convinced people that a vote for me was a vote for the ALP. We (the KAP) have failed completely to get people to understand our position.” The Member for Kennedy pointed to heavy Liberal advertising through the final days of the campaign as evidence of the resources dedicated to stopping him. “There was an LNP TV ad on every hour in Kennedy on Saturday, I’m told,” he said. “Their advertisements took up nearly a tenth of some of the newspapers in Kennedy, and there was five leaflets a day in letterboxes in the last three days – now, they don’t do this stuff for peanuts, it’s cost them one or two million at least.

“This election as a whole has been decided by the Murdoch press, who have backed Tony Abbott for PM.” Ms Ikin, who spent most of the campaign driving around the electorate, has rubbished Mr Katter’s claims on Liberal spending and refused to concede defeat. “That’s bullshit – in our campaign we raised money, we had raffles, we were selling raffle tickets in the streets with balloons,” she said on election night. “I know on the TV they are saying the seat is won but there’s still a lot of votes to come in – Kennedy is a huge electorate, we’re not sure what’s happened yet with the pre-polls and the postal vote and I still think it’s still very close. “I think what it was is that we were looking forward, not looking back, so we were looking for solutions and offering ways forward out of the problems we’ve got.” Mr Katter denied that his preference deals with Labor had kept Ms Ikin from total victory.

“People decide in their own mind where they want to put their preferences and in Kennedy it looks that their preference is that I be their representative in Parliament,” he said. Ms Ikin said defeat would not discourage her and that she would return next election to contest Kennedy again. “I would rather lose with my integrity intact than win without it,” she said. Mr Katter would not be drawn on the possibility that he would leave politics if he lost. “I’m 68 years old, I think I’d have a cheer and a party [if I lose] but I will also cry for my country,” he said. “If I walk away, who’s out there? We’re not backing down or going away - we got smashed and annihilated but history shows that there is nothing as powerful as an idea that’s time has come.”

FLT 106 Australian Air Force Cadets came within half a point of victory at the RSL Tri-Service Drill Competition in Atherton on Saturday.

SENIOR JOURNALIST Ryan Groube

JOURNALIST Boyd Robertson

Cadets just miss out on win By Boyd Robertson Mareeba’s FLT 106 Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) have narrowly missed out on a top spot at the 2013 Far North Queensland RSL Tri-Service Drill Competition in Atherton on September 7, losing to the FLT 107 Innisfail cadet unit by half a style point. Hosts 144 Army Cadet Unit (ACU) Atherton placed third, beating out Cairns units 134 ACU, FLT 104 AAFC and the TS Endeavour naval cadets.

The competition, which has run for more than a decade, tests the precision, dress standard, bearing and synchronisation of the region’s cadet units in a series of parade-ground marching manoeuvres. Judges from each service branch inspect the units as they perform their drills. The units were also judged on their street march through Atherton before the final competition at Atherton High School Hall. The event was attended by North Queensland Army Cadets head Lieutenant

Colonel Jan Cooper, Far North Queensland RSL president Michel Pickering, Mareeba RSL president Eric Bradford and Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long. FLT 106 drill leader Sergeant Jamella Grounds, 16, said she was proud of her team despite the narrow loss, and vowed that her unit would win next year. “I am so happy with the performance of the unit,” she said. “And to lose by half a mark is just incredible. “We’ll definitely be back next year and

we’ll definitely be winning it that time.” Drill leader of 144 ACU, Warrant Officer Class 2 Tyrell Mehmet, 17, said he was also satisfied with his unit’s performance. “It was my first time leading a drill competition so I was definitely nervous,” he said. “We made one or two tiny errors but otherwise I think we did reasonably well.” Lt Col Cooper said it was a “privilege” for her to attend the competition, and said the cadet units had all performed well.

Yungaburra’s Community Disaster Team with TRC officers Sarah Dean (second from right, back row) and Cheryl Matthews (far right, front row). By Boyd Robertson The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has overhauled its disaster management preparations with a new early-warning system and a post-disaster coordination plan that is already attracting international interest. At their September 5 meeting, the TRC agreed to support the idea of adopting the Australian Early Warning Network (AEWN), which can send alerts of potential danger by SMS, email, and internet updates. The system uses Google Maps to target its alerts, meaning people will only get warnings relevant to their area. The AEWN will replace the outdated statelevel Emergency Alert system, which drew complaints from residents during the 2010-11 wet season. The TRC will provide $5,000 for adopting the AWEN in its next budget review. As handy as early warning systems are, they cannot physically stop natural disasters. The TRC’s Disaster Resilient Communities Project (DRCP) aims to aid rescue and cleanup operations across the region for the next time a disaster strikes.

Old-school radio communications, training workshops and small community teams form the lynchpins of the DRCP, which wrapped up its development phase in June. TRC Senior Disaster Management Advisor Sarah Dean and Community Development Officer Cheryl Matthews led the project, which began with community forums in towns including Mt Garnet, Ravenshoe, Malanda and Milla Milla in the aftermath of Cyclone Yasi. One of the biggest problems first found in the forums was the loss of communications. When the Tableland lost power during Cyclone Yasi, commercial phone exchanges switched over to backup batteries, which ran flat in days. Without phones, the TRC’s Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) resorted to sending out staff in trucks to check on outlying communities, which used up resources and slowed down response times. “Basically what we found during Yasi is that the phone exchanges would stay operational for about a day, maybe three days at most,” said Ms Dean. “Mt Garnet, for example, didn’t get assistance for three days because they couldn’t call for it,” she said.

To protect TRC communications, the team developed a simplified plan for emergency service workers in outer communities to use the Tableland’s UHF and VHF radio repeater towers to get in contact with the Local Disaster Coordination Centre (LDCC) in Mareeba. To do this, the Atherton Geographic Information Service (ATGIS) mapped the signal range of every radio tower in the TRC area down to a 30-metre resolution, creating a huge set of raw data that needed to be turned into meaningful information. Using new “intelligent” computing techniques developed by geographic officer George Corea, ATGIS processed the reams of data – which would normally be tackled with room-sized computers – using desktop PCs. This achievement earned them first place in the 2013 Geospatial Information and Technology Association excellence awards. ATGIS’s work is also being presented in Chile to the Emergency Communications subcommittee of that country’s National Engineering Association this week. The Chileans hope to learn from the TRC’s example to better respond to frequent earthquakes threatening their country.

A proposed tungsten mine at Mt Carbine has cleared a major environmental hurdle. On September 5, Vital Metals made the announcement to the Australian Stock Exchange that its Watershed Project had been granted an Environmental Authority (EA) by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

The EA clears the path for the Department of Natural Resources and Mines to consider the grant of the Watershed Mining Leases. The 600 square kilometre mine, if and when it becomes operational, would be able to provide about a quarter of Japanese demand for tungsten for the next seven to 10 years. During construction, a workforce

of about 200 people will be needed as part of an investment of between $100 and $150 million. Once operational it is expected 120 people will be employed. Vital Metals chief executive Mark Strizek said if and when the company is granted the mining leases and finance for the project is secured, construction can begin.

Council will question locals over road safety dispute The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) will poll the residents of several Kuranda streets in the hopes of solving a longstanding road safety dispute. Residents of Rob Vievers Drive and Morton Street will receive a mail survey from council, which aims to gain a consensus of opinion over potential changes to the intersection of their streets. People living on adjoining Harriman Street residents will also be

polled. Rob Vievers Drive is the main access route into Kuranda for both tourists and residents, and its complicated double-opening intersection with Morton Street has been identified as a potential safety risk by council since 2009. However resident divisions over the design of a new intersection, which would require resumption of some residential land, have prevented works

from starting. TRC mayor Rosa Lee Long said council was confident of gaining a united opinion on the issue. “We feel that we need a consensus on what residents feel should happen in relation to this intersection,” she said. “I am sure we will get consensus on this issue so works can go ahead.” Council has estimated costs of about $285,000 for the intersection upgrade.

Years of displacement came to an end for Malanda Falls Visitor Centre volunteers on September 6 with the official opening of a new $1.4 million facility. On April 24, 2010 the centre was destroyed in a fire that was deliberately lit underneath the building leaving nothing behind but a shell behind. Prior to the blaze, the centre was receiving about 16,000 visitors annually with a dedicated workforce of volunteers telling the stories about the natural history of Malanda and the local Aboriginal tribe the Ngadjon. For the past three years, the centre has been operating in a restricted capacity out of the Malanda Dairy Centre in the centre of the town. Stalwarts of the Malanda Falls Visitor Centre, Ernie Raymont and Frank Struber, had been waiting impatiently for the day they could “return home” ever since. Mr Raymont and Mr Struber were given the honour of cutting the ribbon opening the new centre with Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long. Mr Struber, an 82-year-old who has been volunteering since he was 17, said he was delighted with the new building. “It has been worth the wait and this new building really gives us a 21st century building,” he said. Mr Raymont has recently retired from the centre where he worked as a part time co-ordinator and had become a local icon for his guided tours of the nearby rainforest. “It was a shame to see all the old stuff

that we had go but I guess it is in with the new now. I have retired but I really don’t think I’ll leave the place behind,” he said. Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the opening was a tribute to the persistence of the centre’s volunteers who stuck it out during the new facilities construction. “It is also a fitting tribute to the efforts of all the volunteers, from those behind the establishment of the first Centre in 1996, through to those who continued on after the fire in temporary accommodation at the Malanda Dairy Centre,” Councillor Lee Long said. Cr Lee Long said the end product was a modern facility that would be a key marker for tourists visiting the Tableland. “Today we are opening this fantastic building, designed by architect Charles Wright and which reflects the volcanic formation of the Tablelands and the Seven Sisters,” Cr Lee Long said. “I also want to acknowledge the Commonwealth Government for funding support through the Your Community Heritage Grant programme, which allowed us to record some of the special people and stories that you will discover in this centre. “Inside, the decision was made to stay focussed on the natural and a cultural history of this part of the Tablelands, and the unique elements that are so enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. “The results are outstanding. The new Malanda Visitors Information Centre today returns to its place as a centrepiece of the visitor experience on the Atherton Tablelands.” About 150 people attended the opening.

The faithful follow the Our Lady of the Chain statue during Sunday’s procession along Constance Street in Mareeba. By Boyd Robertson Mareeba’s Catholic community gathered at St Thomas’ School on September 8 for the 53rd Feast of Our Lady of the Chain to celebrate as a community and release themselves from their own personal chains. About 200 people turned out to the ceremony, which began with a mass at St Thomas’s Church and moved out to a parade along Constance Street, with the venerated Our Lady statue mounted on a float at the head of the procession. Attendees offered money up to the statue, with some climbing onto the float in order to

kiss its feet. At the conclusion of the street parade the procession moved back into the church for more prayers before the feast proper, catered by the Our Lady of the Chain committee, in the school grounds. The church’s bell was rung throughout the procession, accompanied by firework ‘salutes’ provided by Xplosive Art. The legend of Our Lady of the Chain originates in the city of Palermo in Sicily in the 1300s and tells the story of how three young men condemned to die at the gallows were freed from their chains by an image of the Virgin Mary.

The feast was established in Mareeba by Salvatore Catalano, who vowed to bring the statue from Palermo to Australia after he survived a life-threatening illness in 1961. Mr Catalano’s grandson Joe serves on the Our Lady of the Chain committee, and explained why people pray to the Lady. “They pray to be released from their own chains,” he said. “Whatever is in their life that is personal, or financial, whatever is trapping them and holding them down – they pray to be released from it,” he said. “It’s also a community opportunity for everyone to get together and celebrate our culture.”

Concern after tree falls and crushes car By Boyd Robertson The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) will remove unsteady palm trees Atherton’s Main Street after a car was crushed by a falling trunk on September 3. The driver of the Volkswagen hatchback was uninjured, having parked the vehicle and gotten out moments before. Council voted unanimously at the September 5 meeting to check the trees for fall risk and remove any dangerous specimens. TRC mayor Rosa Lee Long said safety was council’s number one concern. “Although it was unfortunate that the tree fell and destroyed that car, it was very fortunate that no-one was injured,” she said. “Community safety is our main priority – we’ve had our parks and gardens staff check all the trees in the median strip and elsewhere in Atherton and we will be taking out the trees that are judged to be at risk of falling. The people of Atherton have always valued their trees in town so we will be replacing any

trees we take out, either with other, younger palms or some other species.” Cr Lee Long said she could not recall any similar incidents to September 3’s close call, in which a mature palm tree weighing several tons fell over during a period of high wind and landed on a Volkswagen hatchback, crushing it and blocking traffic for about an hour. Jilinda Nursery coowner Jim Beasley-Best has worked with palm trees for more than 15 years and said poor root distribution was more likely to blame for the incident rather than high winds. “[The palm trees in Main Street] would have their roots restricted by the concrete and other objects in the ground,” he said. “During cyclones you can see the big palms actually snap off at the top rather than fall over if they’ve got a well-established root system.” Mr Beasley-Best supported the removal of dangerous trees. “They’d have to be pretty old palms to get that big,” he said.

TCW 24

TCW 24 began life as a 2nd class rail carriage constructed in 1923. In 1981 it was converted into the Camp Wagon it is today (TCW 24) and used by crews on the Forsayth Line. Camp Wagons were first used by Queensland Rail in 1949 to provide living quarters for fettlers who had to live and work away from home. The earlier camp wagons were converted eight wheel box wagons and contained wood stoves, kerosene refrigerators, camp stretchers and a table and chairs.

TCW24 being one of the more modern ones contained bunks, cupboards, gas refrigerator, gas hot water shower, table and chairs, a toilet and battery powered lighting. After the closure of the Forsayth line to goods traffic in the 1990’s, it was returned to general traffic and used by fettlers and other permanent way gangs before being retired and acquired by the Mareeba Heritage Museum where you can see it on display today.

Atherton to get 4G coverage Residents in Atherton, East Barron and Kairi will be able to access Telstra’s 4G mobile coverage network by the end of 2013. Telstra is expanding the 4G service, which can provide download speeds of between two and 40 megabits per second, to include an additional 200 regional towns. Works program ramps up SIXTEEN tenders with a combined value of $6,657,132.79 have been awarded for a range of roadworks across the Tableland. Council accepted recommendations relating to projects including causeway restoration, drainage works, the restoration of sealed roads and embankment stabilisation. Works include causeway upgrades at Leadingham Creek Road, Mt Mulligan Road, Byrnes Road, the Cashmere Kirrama Road. Drainage work will take place along Mona Mona Road, sealed road repairs include Ball Road, Griffin Road and Park Avenue, Mary Street, Cassia Street and Northey Road. There will be stabilisation work on Windy Hollow Road at Kuranda and gravel roads around Herberton. Sealed roads including Top Eureka Creek Road and Schincariol Road will receive work along with Veness Road and Fumar Road. A culvert on Boar Pocket Road will be upgraded. The tenders are funded under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.

Police prepare for rememberance day On September 27, police from across the State will observe National Police Remembrance Day. A march will commence from the corner of Byrnes and Middlemiss Street at 9.30am and officers past and present will march to Saint Thomas’ Catholic Church on Constance Street, Mareeba where a service to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Police have extended an invitation to schools, service or sporting clubs, community groups and individuals to march with the police officers. They would particularly appreciate the involvement of any organization that Constable Blain was involved with. Those who would like to march need to form up with the parade on Middlemiss Street, Mareeba from 9.00am for the march off at 9.30am. A church service will commence at 10am.

Wind farm decision delayed, again TABLELANDS Regional Council has deferred a decision on a request from Mt Emerald Wind Farm developers for more time to deliver technical details about the multi-million dollar project. At its September 5 meeting, council considered a report in to the request, and also a chronology of applications and requests relating to the

project that began in August 2011. “Since then Council extended the response period to 28 October 2013 and has since been asked by the applicants, Mt Emerald Wind Farm Pty Ltd, for a further six months until April 2014,” Mayor Rosa Lee Long said “The information we have asked for relates to noise, visual, traffic, construction and ecological impacts and is required for Council to properly assess the wind farm application. “In considering this latest request Council has taken in to account a number of other factors, including what may eventually be included in relevant State planning provisions, and a lack of response from the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning’s regarding amendments to the Mareeba Shire Planning Scheme,” Cr Lee Long said. “We have also had to keep in mind that the Temporary Local Planning Instrument under which we are considering it will lapse on 7 October 2013.” Council voted to defer a decision on extending the information response period until its next meeting to await the outcome of the Minister’s decision. Acquatic centre opening postponed The Tablelands Regional Council wish to advise Kuranda residents that “unforeseen circumstances” has delayed the opening of the Kuranda Aquatic Centre until September 13.

club news Monthly catch-up with the TABLELANDS MEN’S SHED, MAREEBA Thanks to all those who dropped in at our site at the Mareeba Multi Cultural Festival to buy a cold drink and to say, “G’Day”. It was a great opportunity for the blokes to chat to a huge number of people about the Shed. We were able to showcase a few of our projects on the day. We had displayed one of our magnificent restored old silky oak church pews which have taken many hours to restore. We also had on display a Mina Bird Trap which we sell. We sold a number of these on the day which has meant busy times down at the Shed restocking our supply of Mina Bird Traps. We now have a new shipping container located by our workshop which has meant more room for the men to work. The shipping container will house our tools meaning more room to move in our workshop. The breeze way between the workshop and the container is being appreciated as the weather warms up in Mareeba. We have had quite a few men join our group over recent months. Some are new to the area whilst some others are locals who are looking for something to do with their time. The kettle has been kept busy catering for the extra numbers whilst the yarns are being told. All men are welcome to be involved in the shed. You can either sit and chat or work on some small projects with your hands. Whatever suits but either option will give you the opportunity to have a great day with a group of like minded men. The Shed is open on a Monday from 9am till 12.30pm and on a Thursday from 9am till 4.30pm. We are located at 26 Lloyd Street, Mareeba which is just past the Mareeba Hospital. We can be contacted on 0499 229 986.

Located on the quiet end of Byrnes Street, just a short stroll from the centre of town is this little beauty. First home owners on a tight budget should have this place in their sights. Being possibly the cheapest house in Mareeba, with a little bit of money, and some elbow grease, you could own your own home, for a great price. The house is a very basic 2 bedroom, one bathroom with additional room on one side for a sleepout. The lounge adjoins the dining room, and there is a functional kitchen area as well. And there is a great outdoor area, with loads of yard for the kids and animals. Currently rented at $140 per week, new investors wishing to start their portfolio with a cheap rental should look at this as well. With a little bit of money to be spent on tidying the place up, and maybe renewing the bathroom or kitchen area, you could easily turn this into a great little money spinner. With the added bonus of the block being zoned as high-density, you can let the rent pay off the initial investment, and then look at building some units on the land in years to come.

Shortlist announced for Farmer of the Year award

A who’s who of the local agricultural industry fills the shortlist for the inaugural Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award. The award will be presented at the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) Annual Gala Dinner to be held at the Mareeba International Club on Friday. Mr Nastasi was the inaugural president of MDFVGA where he played a key role in improving transport infrastructure in the MareebaDimbulah area. Respected and well-loved, Mr Nastasi passed away on May 1, 2013.

In recognition of the role Mr Nastasi played in developing the industry on the Tableland, MDFVGA decided to establish an award in his honour. Last week, MDFVGA announced the shortlist of candidates in line for the award: John Nucifora for the development of mango product Zingo 100% Pure Mango, Karen Muccignat for her role in getting Mutchilba back on the map as well as her fight to drive down costs for re-lift irrigators, Vince Mete for 30 years of service on the MDFVGA committee and the development of the Hedging Business, Ian McLaughlin for his involvement

in industry organisations as well as being a leader in the development of red varieties of papaya and finally Stephen Scurr for the development of the pineapple industry in Mareeba. MDFVGA president Joe Moro said: “Everyone on the shortlist are excellent people who have done exceptional things for the industry not just this year but over many years.” Tickets to the gala dinner are still available. To secure tickets call 4092 6099 or email mdfvga@bigpond. com. The event starts at 6.30pm.

By Ryan Groube Pink pumpkins grown in Mareeba will be rolled out in Coles supermarkets across Australia in October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Mareeba farmers Vince Mete, Pep Bianco and Amando Salerno have been growing a combined 200 tonnes of the pumpkins since April, with harvest to begin this week. A gene added to the Jarrahdale variety is what gives the vegetable its pink colouring with Bianco’s brother Tony assuring consumers the inside is exactly the same as an ordinary pumpkin. “It is not like it is strawberry flavoured or anything,” he said. Mr Mete was approached by a “seed rep” in 2012 with the pink pumpkin and asked to trial it in Mareeba conditions. The trial pumpkin was sent to the Melbourne Show where it attracted the attention of marketers who successfully secured a deal with Coles to stock the variety. “Because we were the only area to have trailed growing them we were bought on to do it for this first time,” Mr Mete said. “We are just growing it as a bit of a special but if it goes well

we might be doing it again next year.” Coles Business Category Manager for Vegetables, Daniel Williams said a portion of every pink pumpkin sold would be donated to the McGrath Foundation. The McGrath Foundation is a breast cancer education and support charity established in 2002 by and former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath and his late wife Jane, who passed away from the disease in June 2008. “For every pumpkin - including the limited edition pink pumpkins - sold in Coles stores throughout October, Coles will donate 10 cents a kilogram throughout October to the McGrath Foundation,” Mr Williams said. “Fundraising through the sale of pink pumpkins is a fun and novel way to support a very serious concern for so many Australians and Coles is delighted to help the McGrath Foundation to support breast cancer.” Mareeba-based Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) extension horticulturist Geoff Dickinson said a reason Coles has targeted the three local farmers was because their product was among the best in the country.

Values rise generally at cattle sale Mareeba Combined Agents penned a total of 406 head of Prime and Store cattle for this week’s sale. Values rose generally for all Slaughter type cattle. Bullocks to the Local Trade rose by 4c/kg Local Trade Heifers or Heifers suitable for the Domestic Slaughter trade improved which saw the best of this

category rise by 10 c/kg. Cows suitable for the Local trade were limited to only a few and rates achieved were generally higher than the previous week, up by 5 c/kg on the heavier portion and up by 18 c/kg on the lighter articles. Heavy Ox to the Export Slaughter trade were unchanged.

Schools tie for first Srhoj Cup

Rogatos ride Sisters Giulia and Germaine Rogato (left) with their spoils from the Earlville Gymkana held last weekend. Giulia took out age champion in the 11-12 C Group division on her horse Holly while Germaine finished second in B Group 9-10 on Zappa. Both girls have been riding since they were four years old.

New hockey clubhouse opens up A Mareeba State School student takes his best shot in the penatly shootout during the inagural Wayne Srhoj Cup at St Thomas’s School.

By Boyd Robertson Hosts St Thomas’s School and visitors Mareeba State School (MSS) have won a game each at the inaugural Wayne Srhoj Cup soccer competition on September 6. St Thomas’s boys side took out a win with 3-2 on a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw, while the MSS girls side did the same, winning their shootout 2-1 after a nil-all game. Although all year levels were open for the Cup, mainly Year 7 and Year 6 students took part, along with a few Year 5s. Homegrown soccer hero Wayne Srhoj presented trophies on the day to

the delight of the assembled students. St Thomas’s sport teacher Michael Raso compared the Cup to local rugby’s Chris Sheppard Shield and said it had been a successful first outing that the school would aim to repeat next year. “This is the first time we’ve had it and we definitely want to keep it going in years to come,” he said. “There was a big buzz from the kids for Wayne being here and presenting the trophies. “Back in the day these two schools would play games against each other all the time but nowadays it’s a lot harder to get an afternoon off to set up a game.” Ronnie Leporati and Rudi Shincariol refereed the games.

Atherton Hockey will officially open their new Loder Park clubhouse on Saturday afternoon. The opening will begin at 5.15pm and will include a brief ceremony, trophy presentations from the day’s earlier grand finals as well as entertainment. “The hockey association is very proud to officially open its new clubhouse which has been in use for the first time this season,” Atherton Hockey president Cathy Duck said. “The clubhouse represents a huge achievement and has been many years in the planning and saving towards a facility that can be enjoyed by all. “Although we have a very workable clubhouse we are now striving towards the improved fit out

and landscaping and eventually hope to extend the viewing areas to provide much needed shade and seating.” Atherton Hockey has called on individuals, groups, teams or businesses to sponsor either $110 or $250 to help continue the redevelopment of the area surrounding the clubhouse. Atherton Hockey has also announced the details for its annual off season competition – Summer Sixers. Summer Sixers runs from November 4 to February 29, 2014. Games are played on a half field with a maximum of six players on the field at any one team. For more details contact Cathy on 4091 5835.

DAY AT THE RACES: More than 2,000 people are expected to turn out to this year’s Mareeba Annuals at Mareeba Turf Club on Saturday.

By Ryan Groube On Friday a small band of volunteers will have less than 24 hours to prepare the Mareeba Turf Club to host the town’s biggest racing event – the Mareeba Annuals. Organisers are expecting crowd numbers in 2013 to nudge 2,000 for September 14’s seven-race program. The day before the races, more than 30 marquees will be erected, the grounds cleaned and tables decorated, a pallet (70 cases) of XXXX Gold will be delivered to the bar as

well as enough food to keep five dedicated kitchen staff cooking non-stop. Mareeba Turf Club secretary John Thurlow said: “A lot of work goes into making this day go off easy and without any problems and it is all done by volunteers.” “It is our biggest meet of the year and we are pretty confident of getting a record crowd through the gates.” On Saturday gates open at 11am. The race program includes five thoroughbred races with a combined prize pool of $32,500 as

RUGBY LEAGUE ‘GRAND FINALS’ ACTION!

Kick it like Gordie ... Place the ball on the tee. Line the lace of the ball up so it is in line with the posts. If the wind is blowing over your right shoulder line up the lace with the right post ...

Start your preparation by marking where you want both your feet to land when you kick the ball ...

When lining up to take a shot I take five steps back and four steps across. This can be different for each person. The biggest problem young goal kickers have during this stage is that they rush it. Take some time to relax and take a couple of deep breaths.

By Ryan Groube Fresh from booting the Mareeba Gladiators Reserves into the grand final, Gordon Hunter recreated his game winning kick for The Express in a bid to pass on some tips to the next generation of sharpshooters. The Kuranda junior broke into the ‘Gators under 18s side in 1995 and soon found himself in the A Grade side where he played in the 1998 side which made the semifinals. After more than 15 years with the Gladiators, Hunter will at last play a grand final after his penalty goal propelled Mareeba to a 40-38 win against Yarrabah in their major-semi on September 1. He conceded that prior to taking the kick he was a bit nervous but he had confidence in his kicking routine. Hunter said the secret to becoming a good goal kicker was find the routine that works best for you and to keep practicing.

RUGBY LEAGUE ‘GRAND FINALS’ ACTION!

Re-building the Malanda-Mareeba Eels By Ryan Groube Re-building – it is a word that can chill the veins of even the most ardent supporter – but not for those of the grand final bound Malanda-Mareeba Eels. After winning the Cairns and District Rugby League C Grade premiership in 2011, the club lost a series of experienced players and entered a “rebuilding” period. In 2012, the young side snuck into the finals in fifth and were bundled out in the first week. A year on, the Eels are minor premiers, into a grand final and riding high after beating perennial competition heavyweights Cairns Brothers 28-22 in the major semi final on August 30. Eels coach Darren Ball said the emergence of young players – like exciting lock forward Jason Murgha – and the return of veteran fullback Tom English had created an ideal mix of enthusiasm and experience. “Last year was really a rebuilding year for us and we thought we’d be up there this year but we didn’t expect to be minor

premiers,” he said. “This year we had a couple of our old boys come back, a few of our younger guys have really come through and everyone all year has really been ready to give this [competition] a real crack. For a lot of our young guys they have never won a premiership before so they have bought a lot of enthusiasm to the side.” A strong preseason has been attributed for the Eels’ success in 2013 which saw the Malanda side drop just two games. Ball said the fitness of the side had allowed the Eels to finish stronger than the opposition. In the lead-up to the final Ball said the side would focus on basic skills as well as ensuring they got off to a good start. “The key for us in the grand final is doing the basics well and making sure that we don’t let whoever we are playing get a roll on,” he said. “We also need to start well. It is easier to defend a lead then it is to chase one down.” Ball said he was extremely proud of the way his side had gone in 2013.

COME & RUN WITH THE BULLS – BECAUSE IT’S OUR TOWN, OUR TEAMS, OUR FUTURE A Message from FNQ Football general manager Duncan Sims: In 2013, the FNQ Premier League was expanded to a ten-team competition, with new teams FNQ Heat and Redlynch finishing a credible 7th and 8th in their first season in the top flight. 2012 Premiers Marlin Coast Rangers secured the title again on goal difference, this time from a resurgent Mareeba Bulls who won the reserve grade premiership trophy by two points. Leichhardt Ladies dominated their competition and won the premiership with a nine-point margin whilst in the youth grade Innisfail United took the honours. The junior competition also kept everyone entertained with several of the premierships being decided at the last game of the season. The Grand Final Weekend gives everybody an opportunity to see 14 grand finals over two days

culminating with the Premier League showdown at 7:30pm Saturday night. Come along and see the best games in town. This year also saw the introduction of the Sportscene FNQ Cup. This knockout competition, played midweek during the season, was won by last year’s Grand Final winners Douglas United. This competition was well received and is being expanded in 2014. Although the 2013 season is drawing to a close there is still plenty of exciting games coming to our area with FNQ Football hosting the Brisbane Roar v Sydney FC pre–season A League Game at Barlow Park on Saurday 22nd September, kicking off at 3pm. Local heroes such as Frank Farina, Shane Stefanutto and Steve Corica as well as the Italian legend Del Piero will be in Cairns. This promises to be a very entertaining game so make sure you secure your ticket to watch these professional players.

Reserves coach looks to grand final

Pommy soccer talent helping Bulls to victory By Boyd Robertson Mareeba United Football Club’s reserve side have had some international talent with them this year. Elliot Gardner, 24, and Dominc Petterson, 25, from the English city of Newcastle, arrived in Australia in March and have brought their experience from the British semi-professional leagues with them to Mareeba. “We came here for the sunshine, the beaches and the sheilas,” Petterson, who plays left wing, told The Express with a laugh. “We wanted blue sky, golden beaches and bronze chicks, and

we’ve been very successful in getting those things. “But we love football so much, we decided to look around and see if there was a club that would take us.” The pair approached Bulls president Alex Srhoj in May, who put them through their paces at training before letting them on the field with the reserves in July. The decision paid off and Gardner, who alternates between centre forward and midfielder, quickly established himself as one of the team’s main point-scorers. Reserves coach Sacsha Stankovich said the pair’s talents had been vital to his side.

MUFC reserves coach Sacsha Stankovich is looking forward to a crack at the grand final trophy on Saturday Mareeba United Football Club (MUFC) reserves side coach Sacsha Stankovich is confident his team will top off their already-clinched premiership with a grand final win against Marlin Coast on at Endeavour Park on Saturday. The reserves are rested and ready after a bye over the weekend and with the premiership already in the bag they are looking to add some bonus silverware to the cupboard. The reserves have already gone up against Marlin Coast earlier this year, drawing 2-2. Stankovich said he fully expects a grand final win this year. “Play for player, I feel we are the best team in the league,” he said. “I definitely rate the boys – it doesn’t feel like we a reserves side, more like that we are the second premiers team.” MUFC has experienced a massive resurgence across the board this year – the reserves are the first Mareeba team to win a premiership since 2008 – and Stanko-

vich puts this down to new, mercilessly efficient strategies laid down by president Alex Srhoj at the start of the season. “We’ve definitely applied Alex’s principles to the way we play in reserves,” he said. “Although it’s a degree less entertaining, it’s more basic possession-oriented football – we protect our flanks and we starve the opponents of the ball. “We have a theory that if we have the ball and they’re chasing us, eventually their legs will give out.” This theory has obviously worked, with the reserves suffering only one loss and few draws. “We treat the draws like losses,” said Stankovich. “Most coaches and most teams wouldn’t, they’d say ‘that’s good enough’ and they’d move onto the next game – not us. “We pushed the Bulls spirit really, really hard – those boys have embraced it and it’s worked.”

COME & RUN WITH THE BULLS – BECAUSE IT’S OUR TOWN, OUR TEAMS, OUR FUTURE

The dream is over

By Boyd Robertson

Culture has moved in a positive direction A Message to the supporters of the Mareeba United Football Club (MUFC) from President Alex Srhoj: 2013 was definitely a year of change, not only on the field but off it. The club enjoyed four great years in the former Queensland State League, but this year decided to pass the State League baton onto the new Far North Queensland Football Club Heat and look to re-focus and rebuild the MUFC’s foundations, from the junior ranks through the Premier Men’s. By the results both on and off the field, it seems that decision has been the correct one. On the field, the club rebuilt its senior ranks and brought home some of the clubs’ favourite sons in Wayne Srhoj and Victor Madrid, in addition to 2012 coach Josh Ruiz moving back into a full time playing role. The club built a roster over both senior grades with a strong mixture of youth and experience and the results have most definitely paid dividends,

MUFC President Alex Srhoj. with the Reserve Grade claiming the premiership and the Premier Men’s missing out only by goal differential and making it all the way to the FNQ Cup final only to go down 1-0. More importantly, both sides played a quality brand of intelligent football and have looked to build a foundation for years to come. Off the field, lead by the senior players Dennis Allen, Madrid, Srhoj

and others, the culture around the club has moved in a positive direction, regularly seeing players turn out in the canteen, working bees and junior training days, with the attitude that ‘the club comes first, one club, united, from Under 6s to premiers’. It has been one of the most enjoyable years at the club for a while, the family culture and atmosphere is returning and the development of players and coaches is working towards a positive future. The club’s juniors ranks are moving forward and the club is working overtime to offer some structure and stability in all grades to move forward. We are the only club in FNQ which has the Brisbane Roar coming to us personally. Things are working well and moving in the right direction towards a strong and positive future - we more than just a football club, we are part of your community, your team, your club and your future. Come and run with the Bulls!

play our best football,” he said after the game. “It’s probably been our worst game of the year and this is something we’re just going to have to move on from as a club. “I’m gutted for the boys – they could have probably played a lot better than that and they picked the worst 45 minutes to play it in. “It’s up to the reserves now – I have the confidence in those boys but tonight shows that they can’t just get through on momentum, they need to turn up, focus and do their jobs.”

Mareeba United Football Club’s dream of two grand final trophies for the 2013 season has been ended, with the Bulls premiers side going down 2-1 to Douglas United at Borzi Park on September 7. Unable to recover from a slow start the Bulls found themselves on the back foot throughout the night, gaining some momentum in the second half but unable to catch Douglas before full time. British import Elliot Gardner, stepping up from reserves, scored Mareeba’s only point.

Already beaten to the premiership by Marlin Coast on points, Mareeba had hoped to at least take out the grand final trophy for the premier league, but the loss to Douglas boots them from the competition. The Bulls Reserve Grade side are now carrying the hopes of the whole club ahead of their grand final showdown with Marlin Coast at Endeavour Park this Saturday. Premiers coach Alex Srhoj expressed bitter disappointment in the loss but said he was confident in the reserves. “I’m more disappointed than anything that we didn’t
