New water meters for MSC By Carl Portella

The last round of water meter readings across the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) area highlighted that 400 water meters were either not readable, or giving false readings because of their age, wear and tear. Due to higher than average water usage in the MSC area, most water meters have exceeded the 3.6 ML usage rate and in most circumstances, on average 4.0 ML has passed through the meters. The MSC has water meters that are not

reading correctly; with high revenue losses to Council highlighting the need to begin replacing the aged water meters on a staged three year program. Along with this, ensuring the water meters are listed on the asset management register; and programmed for replacement/renewal at the end of their useful life. As a result, Council has approved the replacement of aged meters and the installation of the highly cost effective “Automated Water Meter” reading equipment, to reduce costs and create efficiencies. Funds

for the new meters will be made available from the Water Reserves ($1.4M) at a cost of $643,092.48 (exclusive of GST). The Taggle Automated Water Meter reading system will allow the operator to monitor water leaks on properties, as well as the councils own infrastructure. While breakdowns, malfunctions and unusual water use patterns can also be remotely monitored. Mareeba residents will be the first to have the new meters installed, with work due to commence in the coming months.

All the way to the top Local Mareeba boy Dean Morzone, was sworn in as a Judge of the District Court of Queensland in Cairns, on Monday, November 3. Family, friends and professional acquaintances were there to witness his humble rise to the top of the legal justice system. Dean’s Mother Irma Morzone said, “I am so proud of our son, he has worked very hard for what he has achieved.” Carl Portella caught up with Dean in the days after he was sworn in and asked about his childhood, his dreams and the journey to the top. Where and when did you go to school, including your tertiary education? I went to primary school at St Thomas’ Primary Catholic School, then Mareeba State High for secondary, and then to Queensland University of Technology (QUT) for my tertiary education, to study for my Bachelor of Law and later a Masters in Law.

Who was your favourite teacher? My favourite teacher was Trevor Gordon, who was my maths tutor, and otherwise a teacher at Mareeba State High. His gentle, patient demeanour and natural teaching skill was respected by students, teachers and parents alike (perhaps a little like Mr Kotter from the TV series – “Welcome Back Kotter”). He went on to become one of the most celebrated principals of Cairns State High. Immediately before his retirement he worked as an inspector for the Education Department. He was replaced at Cairns State High by another Mareeba teacher – Angela Toppin. Unfortunately Trevor was unable to come to my swearing in, but his wife Yvonne was there.

What were your favourite subjects? Surprisingly my favourite subjects, and those which I excelled and topped the school, were Manual Arts (woodwork) and Technical Drawing. Theoretically I should have been a Carpenter/Builder or an Architect, and so thought the school’s guidance officer who counselled me against university. I was quite the average student in all other subjects, especially English, and I was adverse to reading and writing. Yet my chosen career was entirely dependent upon reading and writ-

ing. Despite the advice and my weaknesses in these skills, I managed to complete my law degree with honours, and went on to do a masters degree, as well as advance through the ranks of the Barrister’s branch of the legal profession. All of which culminated in my recent appointment as a judge. What are the things that stand out from you growing up in

generally, the people of Mareeba are invariably interesting and kind. However, my connections with Mareeba stem from my childhood. I have developed friends for life resulting from my childhood, (e.g. Mick and Elsa Borzi, who were at my swearing in), Evan and Faye McGrath, Kevin and Daphne Walls and my god parents Pat and Terry Duffy. My connections have also permeated my professional life - I

To the teacher who predicted that I would never see tertiary education because of my dispassion for reading, may I say – “How wrong you were!”

Mareeba? The things that stand out for me about growing up in Mareeba are: the real people (who you saw is what you got), beautiful Italian and multicultural traditions; especially involving food and festivals, the rodeo, and the strong community spirit. What was it like coming from a rural area? When I went to Brisbane to study it was more than daunting, it was terrifying I had not travelled to Brisbane much, and I was overwhelmed. My most shocking experience happened in my first contact with my fellow university students – when I was invariably asked (usually the opening question) “Where did you go to school? When I responded “Mareeba State High School”, the reaction was shattering – most turned on their heels and snubbed me. I quickly learned about city/country dichotomy and whilst I adapted, I was determined that I would never ever lose sight of my roots and the pride and humility of being a Mareeba boy. Do you still have connections here (old school friend’s family etc)? Of course I have a strong affiliation with principals of older law firms (e.g. Apels) and Magistrate Braes. More

have represented the council on many occasions, as well as private people and businesses in the town. But I have to say that the Mareeba Rodeo is by far my enduring and passionate connection – I try to attend every year to share the same down to earth experience, which I enjoyed as a child, with my own children. They love it. What message do you have to any budding local who wants to make it in law? My message is simple, and one which I have adopted from my father: “Always try your very best!” in everything you do. That was the theme of my talk to the keys of success when I was fortunate to address Mareeba State High School’s graduation cohort a few years ago. A career in law, like any other career endeavour, can be achieved with hard work and determination. We now have a local, internationally ranked, well respected and vibrant university, in James Cook University. It produces graduates comparable to any major city university. I am delighted to say that my first judge’s associate is a JCU graduate, and I hope to appoint others just like him on a yearly basis for the balance of my judicial life. Judge Dean P. Mareeba is FNQ football capital By Carl Portella

Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore with Raymond Cater and Victor Madrid, holds aloft the premiership trophy at the civic reception held at the council chambers on Wednesday, November 5.

The Mareeba Shire Council held a civic reception for the Mareeba United Football Club at their meeting on Wednesday November 5. Representing MUFC were Raymond Cater and Club Captain Victor Madrid, who outlined the club’s achievements and thanked council for their help in maintaining Mareeba’s claim of ‘Football Capital’ of North Queensland. The Mayor and councillors congratulated the Bulls on their exceptional year on the sporting field, taking home nine of the eleven trophies, which were up for grabs during the course of the season. Mayor Tom Gilmore said, “The Mareeba United Football Club should be proud of their achievements and set a fine example to other clubs in the Shire. “Our community is fortunate to have such dedicated club officials and players and we congratulate you all on the historical occasion.”

Atherton-based apprentice has bright future ahead By Justin Fris SARAH Gale doesn’t go to work each day and purely go through the motions; she does her job as well as anyone within her industry. It was therefore fitting that the Atherton-based mechanical apprentice was awarded ‘Apprentice of the Year’ through the MTA Institute of Technology. After only speaking with Sarah for a couple of minutes, her sheer work ethic shone through. Along with her work commitments at Rego’s Mobile Mechanical

Services during the week, she also works as a barista each Saturday. Throw in TAFE study commitments and sleeping, you have a well rounded young woman who is a valued member of Clint Reghenzani’s team. Mr Reghenzani, who has been a mechanic for 12 years, said Sarah’s ability for ‘wanting’ to do a good job set her apart from others. “Everything is always changing in our workshop,” he said. “Sarah wants her job badly and this reflects in her effort.” Originally from Tasmania, Sarah

grew up on a dairy farm. Never shy of work, she developed a passion for working with cars. The award process was quite nervy for the typically laid back apprentice, but after conquering a phone interview, the rest they say, is history. Sarah received $2000 in prize money from MTAA Super on the night, along with a new toolbox donated from AP Eagers. As she prepared to welcome a new vehicle into the workshop, Sarah gave thanks to Clint, her family and the team at CTS.

Trial hopes to flush damage

One of trial locations in Tolga. By Justin Fris ATHERTON is being hit by a series of toilet paper thieves, who appear intent on rolling away the region’s reputation. A number of toilets located within the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) jurisdiction have been affected; which resulted in council approving a 12 month trial for several toilet paper wipe vending machines to be installed in high use areas. Many people might struggle to wipe the look of disbelief away, with each packet (10 disposable wipes) set to cost $2 each. A list of 12 locations was tabled for the trial, which include several tourist

hotspots at Lake Tinaroo and Tolga. Despite the trial period costing $5,460 overall (with 43 machines being installed), Cnr Rod Marti said the TRC needed to re-consider its thinking. “Given problems with amenities being stolen or set on fire, this motion needs to be trialled and we can see what happens,” he said. Cnr Marti’s opinion was also held by Cnr Marjorie Pagani, who congratulated the reporting officer (Chris Larkin) for ‘thinking outside of the square.’ As the trial begins, our community will maybe now consider their actions; one flush at a time.

A bridge too far? By Justin Fris BRIDGES punctuated discussion during last Thursday’s Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) meeting for a variety of reasons. A recently completed Kennedy Highway bridge over Nettle Creek (Innot Hot Springs) needed a new name after the TRC received a formal request from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR). After names were submitted, two names were left standing; Minnie Rita Robinson Bridge and Charles Spranklin Bridge. Both individuals have contributed convincingly to the Tablelands and were worthy of further distinction, which all councillors debate hotly. Representing the Spranklin camp were Cnrs Marjorie Pagani and Shaaron Linwood. Both spoke with passion for a man who settled into

Herberton from 1882 and transformed local business in the region. In the Minnie Rita Robinson corner firmly was Cnr Peter Hodge, who believed a petition tabled to council (comprising of 445 names and signatures) was impossible to overlook. After both sides were deadlocked at 3-all and needed to find a winner, TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long added her casting vote, resulting in the bridge being dubbed the ‘Minnie Rita Robinson’ bridge. Charles Spranklin’s legacy will live on though, in the form of the bridge’s walkway. Earlier in the day, Councillors were provided information on the re-opening of the Kirrama Range Road by the Cassowary Coast Regional Council. TRC’s connection in the opening relates to several bridges that reside within the Tablelands catchment area (along Cashmere-Kirrama Road).

Almost instantly, Cnr Shaaron Linwood asked whether local property owners had been consulted in regard to the re-opening. When it appeared evident they hadn’t, all councillors began earnest discussion in to how best complete the consultation. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the road was ‘overgrown and needed maintenance’ and outlined that livestock carrier vehicles would not be ideal for the current configuration of the road. Council approved unanimously to undertake maintenance checks of the CashmereKirrama Road (sourcing up to $50,000 from the Road Maintenance allocation budget), along with conducting further investigations to improve conditions of all four bridges which inhabit the road. As can be clearly seen in the picture above, funding will be beneficial along the road.

Dylan is on target MAREEBA State High School student Dylan Acha came out on top during a recent industrial design competition. After submitting his entry (a dart board) into the Business Liaison Association’s ‘Industrial Design and Technology Awards’, Dylan found out about his winnings during a family holiday in Adelaide. Dylan’s victories included first in ‘Senior Closed Design’ and the ‘Most Outstanding Achievement awardSenior’. He collected an assortment of certificates, medallions and hardware vouchers (courtesy of Cairns Hardware) upon his return to Mareeba. Coming into the final stretch of his high schooling life, Dylan is keen to enter the building trade next year via an apprenticeship.

Our children have been given aca demic and social opportunities that most private sch ools would not be able to meet and we have foun d the teaching staff to be very genuine and con cerned for their charges (our children/students) demonstrating a high professional teaching standard which we rate as challenging with the best. Workshop aimed to quell pigs By Justin Fris ARE feral pigs the bane of your farming enterprise? Do you wish there was a better way for your stock to thrive without threat? If you answered yes to one or both of these questions, there is an upcoming workshop which should benefit you greatly. Held at Peter and Heather Brown’s “Anabranch” property in Mt Molloy, (old smelting site, west end of Santowski Crescent) from 9.30am on November 15, this ‘you beaut’ small workshop will out-

line a number of key components including feral pig behaviour and how to ensure your property is best equipped to deal with a stock attack. Feral pigs (among other wild animals) are a constant threat toward Australian farming enterprises. They have little regard for stock of any kind, which can cost farmers thousands of dollars annually in lost revenue. There are several methods to help negate this issue, which will be covered during the workshop. Local legends Sid Clayton, Peter Alden and Andrew Taylor will be on hand to

provide first hand advice, along with the launch of a new pig trapping device. All attendees are advised to bring a hat, bottle of water and a chair in order to maximise their time at the event. If you would like to register your interest or have any further questions about the workshop, please contact John Brisbin on 0407 471 565. PHOTO: Pig traps are beneficial in protecting your property.

Principal Policy Officer for Biosecurity Queensland Mark Lightowler said public consultation would close at 5pm, 21 November 2014. “We’re primarily seeking comment on options for managing banana pests, mango pests, cattle ticks, bee pests, and a fee for property registration,” Mr Lightowler said. “It’s important that we hear from a diverse range of people who would be impacted by any of these proposed changes. “Whether you’re a backyard gardener,

bee keeper, hobby farmer or producer we want to hear from you.” Mr Lightowler said providing feedback was easy. “Respondents can have their say only on the topics of interest to them and skip other sections,” he said. “This is part of the biggest review of biosecurity legislation in the past 100 years, so it’s important that people take this opportunity now to have their say. “Detailed information on each of the options, including the costs and benefits to the community, is available in the Regulatory Impact Statement.” To view the Regulatory Impact Statement and provide feedback, visit www. daff.qld.gov.au. Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson), an ex-NYPD cop, now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside the law. When Scudder reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker Kenny Kristo (Dan Stevens) hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered his wife, the PI learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime...nor will it be the last. Blurring the lines between right and wrong, Scudder races to track them through the backstreets of New York City before they kill again. Review by Louise Keller: Competently made, this film set in the disturbing, ugly reality of drug trafficking and depraved killings, feels rather routine, with Liam Neeson its best asset. Adapted from Lawrence Block's novel, Scott Frank (The Minority Report, Out of Sight) has constructed a screenplay that describes its flawed characters reasonably well. Neeson, as the former cop searching for redemption, has a compelling presence: reflective, quietly spoken and determined. We first meet Matt Scudder (Neeson) in 1991 as a scruffy, out of control NY police officer, sculling nips of whisky along with his morning coffee when a robbery occurs. A shooting spree follows, resulting in an innocent death. Eight years later, Scudder has cleaned up his act, resigned from the force and works as an occasional private eye, taking on cases (and accepting gifts for payment) that appeal to his sense of injustice. As if to remind us that Scudder is a good guy, he is regularly shown at his AA meetings, endorsing the 12 steps of sobriety. T.J (Brian 'Astro' Bradley), the black homeless kid who lives at the library and becomes Scudder's assistant, although Scudder assures him he is not someone who has a partner, is the most interesting and unexpected character. There's a push-pull quality about the relationship between TJ and Scudder, being the only relationship that we care about in any sense. Incessant rain plays an effective part in the mood generated, as is the editing of AA's mantra as the climactic sequence plays out. The gruesome nature of the exposition may be inevitable but there is an element of sensationalism about it.

INTERSTELLAR

In the near future Earth has been devastated by drought and famine, causing a scarcity in food and extreme changes in climate. When humanity is facing extinction, a mysterious rip in the space-time continuum is discovered, giving mankind the opportunity to widen their lifespan. A group of explorers must travel beyond our solar system in search of a planet that can sustain life. The crew of the Endurance are required to think bigger and go further than any human in history as they embark on an interstellar voyage, into the unknown. However, through the wormhole, one hour is the equivalent of seven years back on Earth, so the mission won't work if the people on Earth are dead by the time they pull it off. And Coop, the pilot of the Endurance, must decide between seeing his children again and the future of the human race.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift calls on Far North Queensland blokes to grow more than a ‘mo’ this November.

Far North Queensland fellas... it’s time to get your beard on! This November, I’m calling on Far North Queensland fellas to ‘get their beard on’, grow more than a ‘mo’ and help beat men’s cancers! Around two men every day in Far North Queensland receive the news they have cancer, and sadly more than 270 will die from the disease this year alone. November provides an opportunity to have some fun with the fellas and show support for the one in two Queensland men who will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, through a new fundraising campaign, Beard150. Beard150 is making the most of the trend of the moment – beards! It calls on more than 150 men to grow a beard and raise funds for men’s cancers. Far North Queensland blokes are invited to grow their beard in any shape or length – we’ve already seen some colourful beards, crazy beard designs, flowers woven into beards and even knitted beards! You can also donate to the cause directly, sponsor a loved one to grow a beard, or pledge or to shave or colour your own beard to raise funds too. Getting the boys together and getting involved in Beard150 is not only a lot of fun, but will make a real difference to Queensland men affected by cancer by raising funds for prevention programs, support services and world class research. I encourage all Far North Queensland men to take simple measures to reduce their

cancer risk and help detect cancer early. More than 13,400 Queensland men will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone – almost 4000 with prostate cancer, 1800 with melanoma and 1600 with bowel cancer - nearly 4500 men die from cancer in Queensland each year. This month is also a poignant reminder about the importance of undergoing regular screening - early detection is a key factor in improving survival rates. We know up to one-third of all cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes, and there are easy steps all men can take to reduce their cancer risk by joining the QUEST to quit smoking, understand your body and get checked, eat healthily and drink less alcohol, stay SunSmart every day and take time to be active. More information about Beard150 is available via www.beard150.com, Instagram or facebook.com/beard150. Grow more than a ‘mo’ this November – grow hope - for our fathers, brother and mates. More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available at www.cancerqld.org.au or Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20. Help make the healthy choice the easy choice by registering your school, workplace, sporting club and early childhood centre to QUEST, Cancer Council Queensland’s new healthy lifestyle program – quest.org.au.

Biboohra’s diamond

Photo is an artist’s impression only, and may vary from the finished product.

Perfectly suited to retirees, or those that do not require two-car accommodation, or a four bedroom, the floor plan of this home is fabulous. Boasting 174m2 under roof, with two alfresco dining areas, plus a media Room. The Lynd design is lifestyle orientated; the facade also delivers excellent street appeal. Located only minutes from Mareeba, 55 Minutes from Cairns. Lots are selling now off the plan, so be quick and take your pick. Anticipated completion early 2015.

How can you have a block of land right in the middle of the village and be so totally private? Well in this instance you can as this land has only one neighbour at the far end. Bit over 1 acre, all fenced with a couple of gates on the side and back. Highway frontage and surrounded by some kind of reserve. Bore and power pole in place. You can walk to the shop/ Address: petrol station and Price: school. A fasciAgent: nating shape of a diamond instantly Contact: grabs you, come

and see for yourself! Seller has just decided to lower the price to $125,000 for a quick sale. Inspect any time. Contact Elizabeth Bors on 4092 4100 or 0437 921 648 at Altitude Realty Mareeba. www.altituderealtymareeba. com.au

Heatwave over for FNQ Premier League rivals By Justin Fris THE FNQ Heat will no longer be part of the FNQ Premier League, after a directional reshuffle by Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced last week. Both the Heat and Northern Fury (Townsville) will now compete in a newly formed “Inter-City Challenge” competition, where both sides will compete in the northern conference. Away trips to Mackay, Rockhampton and Gladstone appear on the cards for both sides next season, with some Heat/Fury officials having already gone on the public record stating they hold ‘grave concerns’ over the extra travel commitments required in 2015. Locally, the FNQ Premier League will be reduced to eight teams, with the weekly bye eliminated. Clubs will play more football and present

further opportunities for youth players to rise through the grades. FNQ Football General Manager Duncan Sims said league officials will be working with all clubs in order to accommodate the new format of the Premier League. “The reasons for the changes have been widely documented,” he said. “We will simply need to work with the current situation and assist all of our clubs through solid consultation.” Additionally, The Express contacted all eight club presidents; in a bid to convey how they feel the new league configuration will impact them. Mareeba Bulls Club President Alex Srhoj acknowledged it was a great opportunity for the Bulls to ‘get on board’ and provide further opportunity for Mareeba footballers. Similar comments were raised from Stratford Dolphins FC Presi-

dent Rowan Coates, who said the longer competition will be something all clubs will need to manage. Edge Hill United Football Club President Glen Waddingham was encouraged by the new change, believing better quality matches will benefit all teams. He didn’t believe the omission of the bye would impact his club. Leichhardt FC President Gavin Rumble said he was keen to meet with his fellow committee members to discuss the move, while Douglas United official Logan Marsh didn’t believe the changes would impact his club’s playing stocks. Marlin Coast Rangers President Alan Scott said an eight team competition would be ‘ideal’ and excess travel may lead to some FNQ Heat players returning to local clubs in future seasons. Unfortunately, Innisfail United and Southside Comets officials were unavailable for comment.

Mareeba’s indigenous squad gather at Davies Park prior to the carnival.

Indigenous stars shine in Cairns By Justin Fris MAREEBA’s finest indigenous rugby league talent gathered at Davies Park last Thursday, ahead of last weekend’s indigenous carnival in Cairns. All players were in excellent spirits during the session and were extremely humble when receiving their team kit from coaching staff. Coaches were not only thrilled with the players’ attitudes, but wanted to acknowledge all sponsors that supported them on their travels up to Cairns, representing their town and culture from the heart.

Yungaburra triathlon soldiering on for success By Justin Fris SPORTS lovers from around the Tablelands have been treated to a feast of events of late; with the Yungaburrabased ‘Soldier On’ triathlon set to delight them even further. Held between November 21-23, it won’t only be sports fans that will be jamming the streets of Yungaburra; music fans will also get the opportunity to see country music icon Lee Kernaghan perform live for free. Nationally recognised by both Triathlon Australia and National Paratriathlon Australia, the event has been extensively planned by key local stakeholders including the Yungaburra Association Inc, Soldier On and the Tablelands Regional Council. In turn, these stakeholders have received overwhelming support from predominantly local based businesses, which are doing their bit to see the region flourish. ‘Soldier On’ who are the naming rights sponsor of the triathlon, are dedicated to supporting psychologically and physically wounded servicemen and women. Many of the competitors will include those who are using this event as a bid to invigorate their soul and return to community life. Despite an inaugural event, registrations for all events have been quite healthy (currently in excess of 280). It is hopeful that numbers will continue to rise as the date nears ever closer. Five different events will be offered for everyone, regardless of age or ability. So the opportunity to take part has never been easier. The Yungaburra markets will open at 7.30am on the Saturday and facilitate keen observers. Similar activities will also take place at Tinaburra foreshore, where a stack of activities and entertainment will keep the kids

happy. For the seasoned campaigners, the Olympic distance event will commence at 2pm. Athletes will be required to complete a 1.5km swim, 49km bike ride and 10km run. Alternatively, if you are more into speed than endurance, the ‘sprint’ event (750m swim, 27km bike ride and 5km run) may be more up your alley. As the sun sets, music lovers will join athletes as one, to witness a rare double delight of musical entertainment. Local band ‘Ruff Diamondz’ will kick off a free concert from 7pm, with Lee Kernaghan also stopping by to play a set for the crowd around 8pm. Sunday will see a shift in focus toward junior athletes, with the kids ‘Aquathon’ (1.2km run, 200m swim and 1.2km bike ride) headlining Sunday’s card of events. Local businesses are also encouraged to create a team for the ‘corporate event’ (400m swim, 10km bike ride and 2.4km run), which should ensure some tired bodies to start the working week. Above all, local stakeholders are hopeful events of this ilk can build a powerful event legacy; and further expand the local economy through tourism and added exposure via various media platforms. Yungaburra Association Inc President Max Lewis said the event will be huge for Yungaburra. “Competitors, spectators and the wider community are invited to visit Yungaburra over the weekend and help raise funds for Soldier On – a charity that helps returned service men and women,” he said. Mr Lewis’s sentiments were echoed by TRC Cnr Rod Marti, who said there were several volunteers across a number of portfolios that had worked tirelessly in the lead up to the event. For all event information (including road closures) please visit: http://www.soldierontriathlon.com.au/EntryDetails.html or contact the TRC on 1300 362 242.

Croc Trophy discussion continues over summer months for TFC By Justin Fris

The economic benefits of such an event are vast (Photo by Kenneth Lorentsen)

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

FUTURE planning of the Crocodile Trophy’s imprint on the Tablelands is set to receiver greater input from the Tablelands Futures Corporation (TFC) in coming months. A report tabled in last Thursday’s Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) meeting outlined a $17,500 contribution from Council toward the 2014 race. Of the $17,500, $5000 was allocated toward Tourism Tropical North Queensland’s (TTNQ) contestable funding, which is designed to maximise marketing and promotional opportunities for the entire Far North region. But as resources tighten and local businesses intensify operations to remain viable, the TFC is putting up its hand to ensure race stages can stay on the Tablelands. Working in a collaborative manner, the TFC will meet with Croc Trophy organisers within the month and begin pre-planning discussions with local council representatives. TFC Chairman Michael Lawrence said the TFC were also keen to work closely with Austrian Crocodile Trophy organiser, Gerhard Schönbacher. “The TFC is keen to be involved with the Croc Trophy,” he said. “We are very keen to both demonstrate and maximise the benefits of the event to all local businesses and stakeholders within the region.”

A stump breaking performance: Peter Roy captured the exact moment when a Cairns United player was bowled on Sunday.

Bandits toil after dominance By Justin Fris AFTER dominating United for much of Sunday afternoon, the Mareeba Bandits again failed to cash in on their overall dominance. The hosts ripped through United’s middle order with ease; who were eventually all out for 122 (44 overs). A pedestrian run rate ensued for the visitors, who lost all will to attack after their batting collapse. But, the two day affair is now delicately poised, with the Bandits slumping to 3/43 at stumps. Time is now a factor, which lead and adequate bowling time imperative for an outright victory. Earlier in the United innings, Brett Brewer and Adam Roy tormented the visitors with a scorching breeze at their backs. I wonder if both Brewer (3/18, off 13 overs) and Roy (4/18, 13) topped their class of economics at school, as there is no shortage of economic growth in their

bowling right now. With ideal conditions for batting, the Bandits began positively, but lost their way in the final few overs of the day. Youngster Luke Lambourne stood up to the surging visitors, remaining on 17 not out at the close of play. A thrilling second day looks set for Sunday, with locals encouraged to head down to Kerribee Park and cheer on the home side.
