Mixed results for schools By Boyd Robertson
T
he release of NAPLAN results for 2013 last week paints a grim picture for Tableland schools, with most just meeting national averages and many lagging seriously behind. NAPLAN scores Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across the fields of reading, persuasive writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. Mareeba State High School (MSHS)’s Year 9 students came in ‘substantially below’ the national average in reading and ‘below’ in all other
categories. Atherton State High School (ASHS) fared slightly better but did lag behind the national average in persuasive writing, spelling and numeracy. Mareeba State School (MSS) was a mixed bag – while the primary school’s Year 3 and Year 7 students scored above similar schools in several categories, their Year 5 cohort was less impressive and all grades came in below the national average. Jubilee Christian College in Atherton along with Dimbulah State School and St Anthony’s School in Dimbulah were among the few Tableland schools to score above the national average
in any field. Tableland principals have defended their school’s records but also admitted there is room for improvement. MSHS principal Jo Soothill pointed out that her school performed on par with statistically similar schools in all fields and that regional schools usually experienced lower outcomes than metropolitan institutions. “I would say there is a significant difference in the base that we are starting from compared to the national average – national data would say that students who live in regional areas have a higher
disadvantage,” Ms Soothill said. “We don’t pick and choose our students, however – we treat every child the same and we do deliver the outcomes for them.” MSS principal Shirlee Gallo said the ‘middle cohorts’ of Year 5 and 9 often experienced ‘disengagement’ from academic pursuits. Faye McGrath taught at MSHS for more than 40 years and said although NAPLAN was a useful tool, it was ‘only one cog in the wheel’ and that each cohort of students was unique. “It doesn’t necessarily reflect students that are looking to go into trades or other paths,” she said.
