Mixed results for schools By Boyd Robertson
T
he release of NAPLAN results for 2013 last week paints a grim picture for Tableland schools, with most just meeting national averages and many lagging seriously behind. NAPLAN scores Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across the fields of reading, persuasive writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. Mareeba State High School (MSHS)’s Year 9 students came in ‘substantially below’ the national average in reading and ‘below’ in all other
categories. Atherton State High School (ASHS) fared slightly better but did lag behind the national average in persuasive writing, spelling and numeracy. Mareeba State School (MSS) was a mixed bag – while the primary school’s Year 3 and Year 7 students scored above similar schools in several categories, their Year 5 cohort was less impressive and all grades came in below the national average. Jubilee Christian College in Atherton along with Dimbulah State School and St Anthony’s School in Dimbulah were among the few Tableland schools to score above the national average
in any field. Tableland principals have defended their school’s records but also admitted there is room for improvement. MSHS principal Jo Soothill pointed out that her school performed on par with statistically similar schools in all fields and that regional schools usually experienced lower outcomes than metropolitan institutions. “I would say there is a significant difference in the base that we are starting from compared to the national average – national data would say that students who live in regional areas have a higher
disadvantage,” Ms Soothill said. “We don’t pick and choose our students, however – we treat every child the same and we do deliver the outcomes for them.” MSS principal Shirlee Gallo said the ‘middle cohorts’ of Year 5 and 9 often experienced ‘disengagement’ from academic pursuits. Faye McGrath taught at MSHS for more than 40 years and said although NAPLAN was a useful tool, it was ‘only one cog in the wheel’ and that each cohort of students was unique. “It doesn’t necessarily reflect students that are looking to go into trades or other paths,” she said.

Two Mareeba school chess teams have passed through to the next round of regional championships in Cairns. St Thomas’s School and St Stephen’s Catholic College both sent teams to the first round of the 2014 Far North Queensland Interschool Chess Championships, hosted by Trinity Anglical School (TAS) in Cairns on February 27. Both St Thomas and St Stevens tied for first in their respective age categories (St Thomas in primary, St Stevens
in secondary), but were awarded second place by the competition’s grading computer. Nevertheless, coach of both teams Mike Harnischfeger (or Mr H to his students) said it was still a good outcome. “We can’t really complain about the decision the computer made because it doesn’t just tally up wins, it takes into account how each game goes,” he said. “I am definitely seeing these students put the strategies we’ve been teaching them into practice and they are getting the results. Even our first-time players
Dusty boots and weather-beaten Akubras will be left at home, as a rural station on the outskirts of Dimbulah prepares to host a glitzy black tie ball. Tickets are now available for the inaugural Bling and Black Tie Bush Ball to be held at Eureka Creek Station on April 26. The event, organised by the Dimbulah Lions Club and Nugget of the North Camp Draft, is being held as a local fund-raiser as well as an opportunity to “bring a little bit of culture out here to the bush”.
A complimentary drink and hors d’oeuvres will kickstart the evening that includes a formal meal and entertainment from Cairns band Top Shelf and DJ Nipper. Event organiser Tammy Sivyer said Dimbulah had in the past hosted popular ‘bachelor and spinster’ dances and the hope was that this event could re-establish that tradition. “The reality is a lot of the girls from the bush don’t get the opportunity to have that night club experience that people in the big towns get. They’d deny it but the blokes enjoy dressing up as well,” she said. “We are putting this on as something a bit different

Bore field pilot study may solve water crisis By Ryan Groube
The Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) has launched an ambitious bid to minimize the impact of huge cost increases for raw water in Mareeba, Dimbulah and Kuranda. Council is scrambling to find a way to circumvent an 860 per cent increase in the cost of raw water which will be phased in by SunWater over five years from 2015. Once fully phased in, the increases will add an additional $2.7 million each year to the cost of running the region’s water supply schemes. During general business of the March 5 MSC meeting, Cr Alan Pedersen called for a pilot study into the possibility of supplementing Mareeba’s water supply through bore fields. Officers have been asked to prepare a preliminary report of any subterranean water supplies that could be tapped into to supplement the MSC’s existing allocation of 5451 megalitres of high priority water allocations. The MSC use about 3000 mega litres of that allocation each year but are still required to pay an “access charge” per megalitre for the remaining 2451 mega litres. The Part A, or access charge, of water is set to skyrocket to about $563.54 a megalitre while the usage charge – the cost for the water itself – is going to rise from 50 cents to 64 cents a mega litre. Cr Pedersen said the possibility of installing a bore field was a long shot but that the proposed increases were ludicrous and that SunWater could “shove it up their jacket”. If a suitable supply could be found, Cr Pedersen said the MSC could look at decreasing its water allocation through SunWater. “We just have to look at other avenues for our water because we just can’t wear this 800-odd per cent increase,” he said. “If there is a way of doing this we would be able to provide the community with long-term insulation from any future external price shocks.” For the project to be successful, council would need to find a sufficient subterranean supply that is not supplemented from water from Tinaroo Dam – which is owned by SunWater. The water would have to be of treatable quality, close enough to the surface to make installing the bore field affordable, and close enough to the Kowa Street treatment plant to ensure the cost of transporting the water wasn’t prohibitive. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the idea was “a feather in the wind” but that it was “good business” to look at every option to reduce the hit on ratepayers. “If we can pull 1000 megalitres of water from the ground then that is good business,” he said. “I am very happy to look at any option to avoid what is coming for us.” A spokesperson from SunWater said the water supply company was working closely with councils.
Council may pass on wind farm decision By Ryan Groube Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney has received a request from the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) asking that the State Government call in the Mt Emerald Wind Farm. The MSC concede they do not have the technical expertise to adequately assess the proposed $500 million development near Walkamin. Ratch Australia and Port Bajool, the proponents of the estimated 75-turbine wind farm, are in the final stages of preparing hundreds of pages of technical information about the project. Without State assistance, MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said council would be left with no choice but to outsource the assessment to a consultancy firm at a huge cost to ratepayers. A spokesperson for Mr Seeney, who is also the Minister of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning said: “The Deputy Premier is currently considering this request”. In the coming days, the Minister will re-
spond to the MSC’s request either rejecting the proposal or formally stating that he is considering calling it in. If the Minister is willing to consider calling in the development he will write to the proponents seeking their thoughts on the State Government taking over the decision making role. In late February, Mr Gilmore and MSC chief executive Peter Franks travelled to Brisbane for a series of confidential meetings. As part of that trip, Mr Gilmore and Mr Franks met with solicitors seeking advice on suitable planning consultants who could assess the wind farm development. Mr Gilmore and Mr Franks are concerned that without a suitable assessment firm, council could be open to having their decision challenged in the courts. Any legal challenge is expected to come at a huge expense to MSC ratepayers. While the approaches have been made, Council is continuing to prepare to assess the application as there is no indication as yet if the State will consider dealing with it or
not,” Mr Gilmore said. Stave Lavis, a spokesperson for Wind Turbine Action – a group of Tableland residents with objections to the development – said the group was keeping an open mind about the State acting as the assessment agency. “At the moment we are in two minds and we see both positives and negatives in the State making the decision,” he said. “Our only hope is that the State does all its homework in regard to the due diligence in assessing this application including the enormous issues those nearby residents will face if a development of this size is approved. “If the local council feels that this application is too big for them to get their head around that we can certainly appreciate that.” The Express approached Ratch Australia for comment but they declined. As a result of recent legislative changes all wind farm applications from July 2014 will automatically be assessed by the State Government.

Spicing up Mareeba’s night life
3FX members Sione Takapu, Tony Bishop and Shana Aue entertained RnB enthusiasts at the Peninsula Pub last Friday, including Anthony Claffey, Denise Saunders, Eric Tabuai and Michael Romelo (inset).
By Boyd Robertson A homegrown group of music producers is taking Mareeba’s after-hours scene by storm in a bid to spice up the town’s night life. ‘3FX’ consists of DJ Tonez (Tony Bishop) along with MCs Sonz (Sione Takapu) and Shanz (Shana Aue), and their signature event ‘RnB Fridays’ at the Peninsula Pub on the first Friday of every month is pulling in big crowds. Their productions centre around Tony’s fusion of classic contemporary RnB with modern beats backed by Sione and Shana acting as emcees, and have proven popular with a large segment of the Tableland audience. Their first gig on February 7 was attended by 222 people, with the crowd still calling out for more music after the event finished at 1.30am. Their return to the Peninsula on March 7 also saw the pen packed out, with 3FX holding an ‘open mic battle’ for the first time. The battle was won by Noel Stratton, from Charters Towers, who freestyled over Mary J Blige’s “Pumpin” to the screams and whistles of the crowd. The group states their aim is to bring ‘a bit of variety back’ to Mareeba’s night life, saying the town’s entertainment options have stagnated. “We like to listen to a lot of different music than what you hear in town these days,” said Tony. “A lot of the time we go into town on First Fridays and we end up just coming home and listening own music instead.”
Shana Aue also said Mareeba was overdue for some more entertainment alternatives. “We want to give the community some more options for where to go on first Fridays,” he said. “I think people are really liking it – when we did our first night everyone was still saying ‘keep going, we want more’.” Mareeba partygoers Michael Romelo and Denise Saunders, who attended 3FX’s second show, said the group’s arrival brought some much-needed diversity to the town’s music scene. “I’m here because it’s RnB and hip-hop, and it’s great,” said Michael. “I really hope it’s ongoing, I’d love to see these guys keep putting this night on and giving us somewhere to go.” Denise agreed. “Mareeba needs this,” she said.

A lifetime spent mentoring troubled youths has landed Yungaburra boxing coach Ashley Cupitt a photograph on the front page of the Atherton Tablelands phone book. This year’s White and Yellow Pages began distribution on March 8 and features Mr Cupitt in his gym in Yungaburra. Born into a boxing family, Mr Cupitt has spent more than 35 years teaching hundreds of Tableland locals, particularly those with a history of juvenile offences, how to defend themselves. The 55-year-old said boxing provided structure in youngster’s lives and the first thing that he taught newcomers is that it takes more discipline to walk away then it does to start a brawl. “Boxing attracts people from all walks of life but a lot of young fellas who have found themselves in trouble usually turn up at our club at one stage or another,” he said. “Boxing is a very disciplined sport and that discipline has seen our members go on to get jobs in the defence force and we had another go off to Cambridge for university. “A big reason that youth can get into
trouble with the law is because they have got a lot of energy and they are bored. After a session with me they aren’t bored anymore and all they want to do is go home and sleep.” Each year, Sensis, the publisher of the White Pages and Yellow Pages, recognises the efforts of local people in their communities by celebrating their achievements on the cover of its books. Mr Cupitt was selected to grace the front page this year under the theme ‘Inspiring Others to Achieve’ which recognises the unsung heroes who selflessly help others achieve goals and are an inspiration to their local community. White Pages Product Manager Sarah Simpson said this year’s covers will celebrate humble community members who don’t always get the recognition they deserve. “There are thousands of Australians going the extra mile to help other people succeed and never ask for thanks or recognition. We wanted to honour these local legends who sometimes hide in the shadows and elevate them to a place where everyone can celebrate them,” she said. “This year we are thrilled to recognise Ashley’s efforts.”

Jemma Brown and Gabrielle Fitz say their joint 16th birthday party at the Mareeba Turf Club was unfairly shut down by police despite their best efforts to keep order. By Boyd Robertson New laws introduced by the State Government could see organisers of out-of-control parties slammed with hefty fines or jail time, but some young Tablelanders are concerned even responsible hosts could be hit with the penalties. Recent amendments to the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000 give officers the right to enter properties without a warrant to shut down out-of-control events, seize equipment and prosecute organisers. Under the Act, an out-of-control event is defined as having at least twelve people, three of whom are engaging in behaviour like fighting, destroying property or committing obscene acts. If the organiser is found to not have taken necessary steps to control the party, they (or their parents if they are under 18) face a maximum penalty of a $12,100 fine or one year’s imprisonment. Acting Tabelands Patrol Group Inspector Richard Trotter said police frequently had to shut down unruly Tableland parties to protect neighbours’ properties and safety. “In the past 12 months we’ve had half a dozen or so of these events that we end up
sending officers to and shutting down – it’s a pretty regular occurrence up here,” Act Insp Trotter said. “What these laws are really focusing on are events that are advertised on Facebook and other social media then overrun by gatecrashers who wreck the place.” The law does provide defences for people who have taken the steps to ensure their party stays under control. However two Mareeba teenagers who came dangerously close to being penalised by the new laws say that even hosts who take the necessary precautions could still be caught out by the legislation. Jemma Brown and Gabrielle Fitz hosted their joint 16th birthday party at the Mareeba Turf Club on February 22. Although they took every precaution they could think of – including registering the party with the police, hiring bouncers, requiring wristbands for admittance and creating an invite-only Facebook group – their event was still shut down by the police at around 11.30pm. Jemma said the night, which cost her and Gabrielle a combined $2000, was effectively ruined and she was warned that she was lucky to escape prosecution. “We did everything we could to make
sure it was safe,” she said. “Two boys got into a silly fight, and the bouncers we hired called the police straight away instead of just taking the two guys out like we’d instructed them. The police turned up, shut the music off and said the whole thing was over without even listening to us – they also told me I was lucky the bouncers had talked to them first or they would have probably charged me.” Jemma said the new laws would discourage people from even trying to have big parties in the future. “[The laws] are a bit ridiculous – people are going to think it’s not worth the risk to try and have a party for milestones like a 16th birthday. They will think ‘no matter what I do, it’s still going to get shut down and I’m going to get in trouble’, and not bother.” Act Isnp Trotter said people would still be able to have parties but the new laws were here to stay. “Every party we turn up to is taken on its individual merits,” he said. “Mum and Dad putting on party for the kids at home are not at risk. “However, it’s not police officers’ responsibility to become security guards or bouncers.”
Safer roads for Cook thanks to funding MORE than $1.5 million worth of new safety projects will be rolled out across Cook to tackle the road toll as part of a $350 million statewide funding program. David Kempton, Member for Cook, said the Road Safety Action Plan allocates funding to address black spots on Queensland’s road network. Some of the key local works to improve safety include: installation of audio-tactile line marking on edge and centre lines on Mulligan Highway between Mount Molloy and Lake-
land ($450,000), motorcycle safety treatments on the Rex Range ($650,000), provide stock fencing along the Mulligan Highway between Mount Molloy and Lakeland ($260,000), installation of barriers along sections of the Mulligan Highway ($385,000). “These works are due for completion by the end of the year and will provide safety benefits by improving the highway infrastructure and making the Rex Range more motorcycle friendly,” Mr Kempton said. Mr Kempton said the projects were among
60 action items the government was delivering to improve road safety and drive down the road toll. “Any death on our road is a tragedy, that is why we must continue to invest in these important safety works,” he said. “While we have seen a decrease in the road toll, there are still too many lives lost on our roads each year.” The Safer Roads Sooner program delivers upgrades that address known high risk crash hot spots on the road network.

Beautification works for Atherton
The Tablelands Regional Council has decided to revitalise a section of Jack Street between Main Street and Mabel Streets. This section of Jack Street contains two Camphor Laurel trees that are badly stunted and have outgrown their rock pitch garden surrounds. The rock pitching has lifted off the bitumen and has badly cracked. These surrounds have previously been patched by Council but have now broken again and now require replacement. As Camphor Laurels have a class 3 Land Protection Restriction, Council has decided not to replant Camphor Laurels, but to plant two new Tulipwood trees. Tulipwoods are a good street tree as they are fast growing and have a wide canopy. These new trees will be planted either side of Arnott’s Lane and then the two Camphor Laurels will be removed. In addition, the large Camphor Laurels on Jack Street at Main Street and at Mabel Street will be pruned back to ensure motorist safety and to remove an umbrella tree growing through the canopy. Council recognises that the works will be disruptive to users of Jack Street and hence will take all possible steps to reduce the impact of these works. On completion of the project, there will be no net loss of car parks and no net loss of trees. Divisional Councillor Peter Hodge said: “It is a shame to see the old trees go, but I think the community will see the finished product as a good thing”.
Council offers funding assistance
Council has approved financial, in-kind support and remittance of fees totalling $3,201 to community groups, organisations and individuals Cash donations ($100) for Youth Achievement applications to Bradley Newlands, Liam Newlands, and Mary-Rose Turner to compete in the swimming state titles in Brisbane Cash donations were approved for the Mareeba and District Pony Club ($400); Chillagoe Alliance Incorporated ($1,000) for catering for their unveiling ceremony. Relief of fees was granted to the Mareeba Childcare and Kindergarten ($1,501) for the material change of use fee.
Community groups can access information and download application forms for the financial and in-kind support program from the website at www.msc.qld.gov.au or contact a Customer Service Centre on 1300 308 461.
Recognition for former councillor
Former local councillor Rhonda Sorensen has finished runner-up to AgForce Queensland’s Lauren Hewitt in the 2014 Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation’s Rural Women’s Award. Premier Campbell Newman congratulated Ms Hewitt who will use her $10,000 bursary to improve on-farm profitability for broad acre agriculture. “While life on the land can be tough, there are also innovative Queenslanders out there, people doing great things for the industry and supporting our farmers,” Mr Newman said. “It’s the leaders in agriculture, like Lauren and the other finalists in this year’s awards, who will help us to get there.” Mr Newman said Lauren will use the bursary to share her research findings in leasehold land and alternative rental methods with other states and territories. “Lauren will also create a new leasehold land working group to foster collaborations with farm representative bodies and share information with landholders,” he said. “She will now go on to compete in the national Rural Women’s Awards in Canberra in October and show Australia the great work Queensland women are doing in the agriculture sector.” Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said the finalists were judged on how they would use the Queensland bursary prize to develop their proposals for the benefit of primary industries. “I would like to congratulate the runner-up Rhonda Sorensen and finalists Judith Symonds and Lorelle McShane on their achievements,” Mr McVeigh said. “They have all showcased impressive projects ranging from sustainable farm practices, to management of kangaroos in grazing areas and empowering women in horticulture. “The Rural Women’s Award promotes leadership for women across primary industries by identifying and supporting the talents of emerging leaders.”
Supply upgrade for Chillagoe
Mareeba Shire Council has been successful in securing $295,000 from Queensland Government’s Royalties for the Regions program to improve water quality at Chillagoe. The funds will be used to improve Chillagoe’s water supply by installing an arsenic reduction plant. Chillagoe’s water supply, which is drawn from a bore, has naturally occurring arsenic in it which puts it marginally outside the national parameters. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the project objective is to permanently reduce the concentration of arsenic to levels below the recommended maximum of 0.010 milligrams per litre (mg/L). “Council has conducted an investigation into an alternative bore raw water supply after it was revealed that arsenic could be present in drinking water around the town,” he said. “At the end of the day, it will be our residents who will be the beneficiary of these improvements. “The benefit will be the removal of a potential risk to community health by providing a water supply complying with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) quality parameters. The project is anticipated to be completed by early July 2014.
Flying foxes wreck Herberton habitat
DEPLETED habitat is driving flying foxes from Herberton but the departing animals have left an area of the Wild River needing rehabilitation. Tablelands Regional Council at its most recent meeting voted to provide $40,000 towards overcoming the damage caused by the roosting flying foxes. A report from Manager Regulatory Services Kirsty Lamperd noted that originally, staff were tasked with coming up with a way to disperse the animals. However, when staff inspected the area in late February, it was evident the group had shrunk to about half its maximum size, that it had decimated its own habitat and also that blossom they were feeding on had almost finished. “With the combination of these two factors (no food or habitat) it is anticipated that the flying foxes will move in the very near future,” Ms Lamperd reported to council. “It is therefore considered better value for money to conduct work to rehabilitate the vegetation, clear debris and reopen the walking tracks through the area.” Council voted to provide $40,000 to those tasks and also called for a draft document to be presented at a future Council workshop, outlining how TRC could go about dispersing flying fox camps in the future. Divisional Councillor Shaaron Linwood said damage to the area had been very significant. “It may be a very long time before the vegetation is fully recovered and it is important Council moves immediately to move flying foxes on should the same situation arise in the future,” Cr Linwood said. Mayor Rosa Lee Long said Tableland communities should not have their quality of life and, poten-
tially, the health and safety of their pets and even themselves put at risk. “Our urban centres take up a very tiny proportion of the entire area of the Tablelands, there is no reason that these animals should be able to set up shop in and around our towns and cause the havoc that they can, and leave this kind of damage in their wake,” she said.
Ergon urges cylcone safety
Ergon Energy is mobilising resources and equipment in preparation for a tropical low and its possible impact on coastal communities this weekend. General Manager Service Delivery Paul Ryan said the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Cyclone Watch for communities between Cairns and Mackay with the system expected to intensify and form into a tropical cyclone on Sunday as it nears the coast. While Ergon is making preparations Mr Ryan urged customers to prepare for potential impacts from the system. “We urge people to make safe, be safe and stay safe,” Mr Ryan said. The first thing to do is to “Make Safe”. “It’s important to clear your yard or tie down loose items like roofing iron and outdoor furniture which can become dangerous missiles and pose a threat to powerlines and people in strong winds,” he said. Each home should also have an emergency kit prepared. This should contain torch and batteries, water containers, canned food, bottled water, a can opener and self-contained cooking facilities. A battery- powered radio is also essential for important advice for cyclone response related information. Have at least one traditional analogue phone in your home that does not require electricity to operate. Cordless phones and phones with builtin answering machines will not operate if power is interrupted. Mobile phones should be kept fully charged. The next step, should a cyclone arrive, is to “Be Safe”. “Electrical appliances should be unplugged to protect them from potential electrical damage. People should stay indoors during a cyclone,” he said Once a cyclone has passed, it doesn’t mean the danger has, so you must ensure you “Stay Safe”. “Fallen powerlines can be extremely dangerous. Stay away, warn others to do the same and report them to emergency services on 000 or contact Ergon Energy on 13 22 96,” he said. “Swimming in floodwaters can also be hazardous as they could hide fallen powerlines and I’d ask parents to please warn their children and keep them out of the water.” If power is interrupted, generators should be used correctly by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Mr Ryan said customers could safely plug appliances or stand-alone lighting into their own generators, subject to the manufacturer’s instructions. “Generators should not be plugged directly in to any part of Ergon Energy’s network unless an approved change of system has been installed by an electrical contractor as this could send electricity along our powerlines that our crews are working on and cause an electrical accident” he said.

200,000 REASONS TO SMILE: Recipients of sponsorships and grants from the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bendigo Bank Branch’s celebrate at the Mareeba International Club and left in Dimbulah at the Dimbulah Bowls Club.
Bank donates $200,000 By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bendigo Bank Branches have given away more than $200,000 to local not-for-profit groups for this year, including the Friends of Mareeba Hospital Foundation and Mareeba Swimming Club. The bank branches return half of their profits to the community, and have given away $1.5 million since they was founded eight years ago. About fifty local organisations received funding from the community bank at functions held in Mareeba and Dimbulah on Tuesday March 4 and Thursday March 6. The Friends of Mareeba Hospital Foundation picked up $30,000 toward the construction of a

ing the hospital and their families. “The funding is a significant contribution to this project and for this reason we will be able to complete the project this year.” Community Bank chairman Gilbert Tietzel said the donations were the reason the branch was founded in the first place. “The strength of the Community Bank model is the community’s ownership of it,” he said. “Having a Community Bank Company is such an asset for rural towns as investment is made at the local level by directors who live and work in the community. “The ground-level understanding of the needs of the community by these directors determines where investment and funding is delivered.”

The Mareeba Cricket Club and the Dimbulah Bowls also received $10,000 each. Friends of the Mareeba Hospital Foundation secretary Maree Lopez said the grant money would be vital to completing the foundation’s playground project. “We are extremely grateful for this assistance from the bank,” she said. “Kids rarely have a good time at hospitals and this playground, along with the rest area that accompanies it, is going to do a lot for people visit-

On alert for cyclone Gillian
The Local Disaster Management Group undertakes a training exercise at the Mareeba Shire Council chambers. By Ryan Groube AS a tropical low loomed threateningly over the coast, the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) were implementing measures to bolster its resilience to natural disasters. On Thursday, Mayor Tom Gilmore was preparing to issue the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) an order to be “on alert” to respond to the low which was expected to develop into Tropical Cyclone Gillian at the weekend. It comes after the LDMG met for a training exercise at its disaster response headquarters at the MSC council chambers which was held as a test run to ensure the group was prepared to respond to a natural disaster. “As a council we are well aware of the risks this community faces from disaster events and we are do-
ing this training to improve our capability,” Mr Gilmore said. “While we hope we don’t see any events this year, it is important that our co-ordination centre is up and ready to run at short notice and we have appropriately trained staff on hand.” At the March 5 MSC meeting, council also set a process in motion to identify suitable buildings to shelter refugees fleeing natural disasters. Within the MSC, only one building – the Mareeba State High School’s multi-purpose hall – has been assessed as a place of refuge. The building barely qualifies with a one star rating that makes it a “last resort” to shelter people during a disaster. The MSC has drafted a shortlist of buildings that they want assessed as “places of refuge”. Included in the shortlist are: Julatten State School, Mareeba Interna-
tional Club, Koah Community Hall, Mareeba State School multi-purpose hall, Mutchilba Community Hall and Living Waters Christian Church. Council has written to the Department of Housing and Public Works requesting the State Government assess these buildings for their suitability as places of refuge. Should the State Government reject the request, the MSC and the Tablelands Regional Council will fund a consultant to undertake assessments of the buildings in the region. Mr Gilmore said it was essential council had options to house people during natural disasters. However, he said: “the vast majority are better off staying in their own home”. Mr Gilmore said it was an ongoing issue for the council when refugees from the coast decide to flee to the Tableland to ride out cyclones.

John and Mary Prince with some of their children, circa 1895.
Pioneering family honoured at Falls By Boyd Robertson The achievements of one of the Tableland’s great pioneer families will be recognised with the installation of a special monument at Malanda Falls Reserve. The Prince family, headed by patriarch John Prince, settled in the Malanda area in 1908 after emigrating from Wales to Australia several years earlier. John and his wife Mary were granted access to a block of land across from what is now the Malanda Falls picnic area. It was tough land, dominated by standing scrub but John, an experienced engineer, saw it as an opportunity and immediately began clearing land with steam-powered traction engines. Building a steam-powered sawmill, he sold the resulting timber to other settlers in the area, and established a dairy farm on his cleared land with the proceeds. Business in timber and dairy farming continued to boom and the Princes became a family of renown in the area, with their descendants eventually spreading to every corner of Australia. John Prince was also a prolific in-

ventor and developed a revolutionary device called a ‘releaser’ to assist with dairy farming. The releaser meant that vacuum tubes used for milking cows could stay attached while others were disconnected, vastly improving milking times. The releaser is still in use worldwide but its design was copied in contentious circumstances by an overseas company and John never received recognition for his invention. The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) agreed on March 7 to allow the Prince family to design and install a commemorative monument in the form of a bronze circular saw blade at the entrance to Malanda Falls reserve to honour the Princes’ achievements. Family historian and great-grandson of John and Mary, Bob Prince, said he was ‘exhilarated’ at council’s decision and was organising a massive family reunion in Malanda in October. “This really is a culmination of everything I’ve been trying to do, assisted by my brother Ray and sister Kaye,” Mr Prince said. “We’re expecting more than 200 people to attend because we’ve reached out to every Prince descendant all over the country. I am proud of my forebears and can think of no better way to honour them.”

Range road a ‘death trap’ Regarding the article “Range road not safe for cyclists” by journalist Boyd Robertson (The Express, March 5, page four). I couldn’t agree more with the statement that the Kuranda Range Road is not safe for cyclists. In fact until the complete upgrade is carried out I believe cyclists should be banned from riding on that road. To hear from a minister, in fact the Transport and Main Roads minister, that by giving cyclists a one meter clearance and allowing motorists to cross double white lines would increase road safety is beyond belief. All that can be said to that statement is it is obvious that the Minister has not been on the Kuranda Range Road, if he has I believe he should not be Minister. What person in their right mind would encourage cyclists to use that road just because it’s a beautiful ride? It’s a death trap, for God’s sake. In fact anyone that cycles on that road for that reason could be accused of having suicidal tendencies. Hopefully common sense will prevail before the inevitable happens. Ron Kane Mareeba Wind farm findings ‘limited’ Opponents of the proposed Mt Emerald Wind Farm seem to have their work cut out for them following the release of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) paper. Proponents must be feeling pretty good with the local papers headline declaring “Turbines cause no ill health” (The Express, March 5, page five). No doubt both sides will continue to seek support from the local population to further their cause. Sadly there is a paucity of reliable information that the individual can rely upon to arrive at a decision to either support or deny support for either side of the case. The NHMRC paper was a rigorous
review of available studies in the area of wind farm effects on health. There is no doubt about the integrity of this council, its processes and the veracity of its findings. However, the material that it was able to accept for review was limited in scope and volume and consistencies discovered need to be viewed in light of this. An example of one limitation of one of the studies considered was the computer modelling rather than actual measurement of noise levels in houses in proximity to a wind farm. The NHMRC did not set out with an hypothesis to prove. It set out to find consistencies about health issues (if any) in the research that had been carried out by others to date. It is inviting submissions from the public to help put some meat on the bare bones of current findings. It nominated three areas in which more substantial research needs to be taken: the measurement of noise, the relationship between wind turbine noise and health or health-related effects, and the social and environmental circumstances that affect residents. It may be premature for claims to be made on the basis of this paper alone. The matters of visual amenity (a quality of life factor) and affects on fauna are also legitimate areas for consideration that do not seem to have been addressed to date. Many factors will have to be considered by those charged with making the decision to approve or deny the go-ahead for the project including commercial interest, job opportunities, associated venture development (tours, etc.), natural environmental considerations, quality of life issues and power reliability to name a few. However on the matter of health, I recommend that interested punters take the time to read the NHMRC’s paper available on the web at http://consultations. nhmrc.gov.au Kerry Linwood Atherton

Live in Mareeba at the PCYC ladies night out
RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS There's action and suspense a plenty at The Rising Sun Cinema starting this Thursday. Brand new on the big screen on the same day as it launches Australia wide is Disney's all action spectacular NEED FOR SPEED, with fast cars, street racing and a crime story all interwoven into a grand cinema experience . WOLF CREEK 2 is a terrific outback drama, with Mick Taylor as the crazed pig shooter, that'll have you on the edge of your seat, whilst LAST VEGAS is an absolute hoot of a comedy and stars the big four -Michael Douglas , Robert DeNiro , Kevin Kline and Morgan Freeman as they embark on a full on exotic Las Vegas adventure. This is your last week to see this feel good movie. Also screening is THE LONE SURVIVOR – set in Afghanistan and based on a true story -It'sa powerful action drama, with some warm human empathy. Tuesday March 18 is Members Day, with all tickets only $8 each with a top line up of the season's best flics to whet your appetite – THE BOOK THIEF, LAST VEGAS, SAVING MR BANKS and THE LONE SURVIVOR. Don't miss out, make a beeline for the best in cinema entertainment.
WOLF CREEK 2
The Australian outback is a favoured tourist attraction, especially for young backpackers from Europe and elsewhere. But is can also be a place of extreme danger as some young travellers discover to their horror, when they come into the ambit of crazed, serial-killing pig-shooter Mick Taylor (John Jarratt). Based on real events, the film begins with a very strong and satisfying sequence which shows Mick's cold blooded willingness to have fun while killing. This scene establishes the character instantly, so newbies to the budding franchise will know all that's essential to know. The other element that is shown off here is Toby Oliver's instinctively artful cinematography, which is both naturalistic and slightly manipulated. Later in the film he captures some classic images, such as Mick's truck coming over a dusk horizon, lights blazing against the ominous dark outline of hills behind it.
The annual Mareeba PCYC Ladies Night fundraiser is on again – Friday March 21. After the massive success of the inaugural event in 2013, organisers have promised this year’s to be bigger and better than before. The PCYC hall will be turned into a ladies haven with something for all. The 18 plus event will feature local business stalls, food, drinks, giveaways, raffles, prizes and above all, the Sydney Hotshots live on stage to keep the ladies entertained. With bringing sexy back, Sydney’s Hottest men star in their brand new show “Six Pack Sensation Extravaganza” which immediately heats up with the entire team performing to Justin Timberlake’s hit song ‘My Love’ with giving the ladies of Mareeba the most erotic and stimulating dance moves ever seen by a male revue dance troupe. This year the guys have been working with one of Australia’s leading chorographers putting together a brand new show full of sexy dance routines with sensational

LAST VEGAS
Billy (Michael Douglas), Paddy (Robert De Niro), Archie (Morgan Freeman) and Sam (Kevin Kline) have been best friends since childhood. So when Billy, the group's sworn bachelor, finally proposes to his thirty-something girlfriend (Bre Blair), the four head to Las Vegas with a plan to stop acting their age and relive their glory days. However, upon arriving, the four quickly realise that the decades have transformed Sin City and tested their friendship in ways they never imagined. The Rat Pack may have once played the Sands and Cirque du Soleil may now rule the Strip, but it's these four who are taking over Vegas.

costumes and ripped bodies. Not to mention with exceptional assortments of lights, action, sex appeal, in an incomparable Las Vegas style. This event is the biggest fundraiser for the nor-for-profit organisation and all money raised will go towards their goal of completing a kitchen renovation at the hall. Last year the event raised enough funds to purchase a new stainless steel stove and rangehood. This year the PCYC aim to raise $10,000 to help complete the project in accord with heritage listing

Your social butterfly wings get a serious workout as the week opens up, activating your “fear of missing out.” Kindred spirits may reach out from other parts of the world too. May 22 to June 21 Gemini

2 cups pretzel crumbs
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
Method 1. Lightly grease with oil a large, non-stick baking sheet or roasting pan. 2. In a large skillet over medium heat toast the panko crumbs until lightly golden, stirring constantly. Remove from the pan and allow to cool. 3. In a food processor pulse the pretzels until coarsely ground then add them to the panko crumbs.

4. Add the oil, mustard, honey, water and vinegar to the food processor and pulse until smooth.Season with salt and pepper. 5. Pound the chicken breasts out to an even thickness using a mallet. 6. Mixed Roosters kick off 2014 footy season By Boyd Robertson The 2014 Cairns District Rugby League season has kicked off on the Tableland with the Atherton Roosters facing off against Ivanhoes at Atherton Showgrounds on March 8. The Roosters A Grade side put in a valiant effort but were defeated by Ivanhoes 22-34, while Atherton’s Reserves side fared much better, coming out victorious on 28-10. Atherton’s Under 18s side also destroyed the competition, winning 44-16. Ivanhoes took the lead fast and hard during the A Grade game, with centre Jacob Burns dashing across the line within the first 40 seconds of play, then repeating his feat a few minutes later. The game looked lost before it began for the Roosters after a try by
Ivanhoes scrumhalf James Watson, but Atherton hooker Jarrod Burton led a counter-attack, crossing left of the posts about 16 minutes in. Rapid tries by Glen Hussey and Josh Webb soon afterwards gave Atherton a much-needed morale boost, with kicker Trent Molloy sending a very difficult right-sideline shot over the black spot and boosting the Roosters’ score to 10, putting them back in the game. The Roosters’ missed passes and dropped balls by were exploited mercilessly by their opposition, and Ivanhoes wing James Burns planted in the right corner after a contentious decision by the referee. Play was disrupted about five minutes after the halftime break when a fistfight erupted between two audience members. The second half was a repeat of
the first, with two tries each by both sides, and play ended 22-34 in favour of the visitors. The Reserves side, composed mainly of Ravenshoe players, used superior wing play to clinch their win, while the Under 18’s fullback Dylan Parise scoring two tries and four conversions. New Roosters A Grade coach Carl Hammond pointed out that his side was down a man and indicated he was not satisfied with the quality of refereeing during the game. “For the boys to get out there and put in 80 minutes of excellent play against an extra man is very difficult and I can’t fault them for their performance,” he said. “We really can’t play proper football with officials running the game the way they did.”

Bulls to raise funds for young Rian A trivia and auction night in Cairns will raise funds for the ill son of a former FNQ Heat coach. Rian Docherty, 14, was diagnosed with a malignant tumour in his ribs last year. The son of former FNQ Bulls assistant coach Martin Docherty, Rian was taken to hospital in Brisbane and underwent intensive treatment, including the surgical removal of two of his ribs. Although his doctors appear to have been successful in removing the tumour Rian still faces months of post-surgery
treatment and recovery, with medical and transport bills piling up for his family. To help with this, current Mareeba Bulls player Alex Plowman and former FNQ Bulls player Shane Raso have joined forces to organise a fundraising auction night, to be held at the Rydges Hotel Casino on Friday night. Reaching out through their various family and professional contacts, Alex and Shane are now able to offer up signed jerseys from the NQ Cowboys, Sydney FC, Gold Coast Suns and Melbourne Storm, in addition to a cricket bat
signed by Steve Waugh and Storm player Billy Slater’s boots. All proceeds will go directly to the Rian Docherty Community Donation Fund to assist with the family’s costs. Martin said he was deeply touched by Alex and Shane’s actions, as well as those of the wider community. “We are just immensely, immensely appreciative of what these boys and everyone else are doing for us,” he said. Alex said anyone unable to attend the fundraiser could still contact him on 0407 652 354 to discuss bids.

sPORT results & draws MAREEBA BASKETBALL INC. Entertaining basketball was a feature of last weeks’ opening round of the Mareeba Winter Season competition. Both Stingrays and Eurostars were 10 points winners over Top Shots and Comets Young Guns respectively in two excellent Senior Mens encounters. However Top Shots and Comets Young Guns clearly indicated that they are capable of gaining their share of success during the season. Gummaz were the most impressive team during the opening round of the Senior Ladies competition. While Tequila Slammers and Baiada Steggles also recorded victories in the other Ladies fixtures. The various Junior teams start their endeavours for championship titles this week, when they move into competition mode. However all Junior boys and girls have a great opportunity to improve their basketball skills by attending coaching clinics being conducted during the season. Coaching clinics for Juniors Under 14’s & Under 16’s are on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at the PCYC Sports Hall. Bandits smash Rovers for sure home semi-final
Breeders come from all over for dog show Best in Show winner Sol with breeder Sue Barrs with judge J Connell and Kiralee Southall It was a canine cornucopia at Mareeba Turf Club over the weekend as dog owners from all over far northern Queensland converged for two shows held by the Atherton Tableland Kennel Club. The Saturday show was held in memory of legendary Tableland dog breeder Betty Southall from Tolga, with her great-granddaughter Kiralee both competing and
presenting awards. Breeders travelled from as far as Mackay to take part in the show, which featured 192 dogs spread across 15 breeds, including exotic African Basenjis and gigantic Tibetan Mastiffs. British immigrant Sue Barrs from Townsville won the Best In Show for the Betty Southall Memorial Championship show with
her 3-year-old pointer Sol. Atherton Tableland Kennel Club president Chris Petersen said the shows were an excellent chance for breeders not only to show off their dogs but also catch up. “Shows like this promote the breeds but they’re also a very good opportunity for everyone to socialise,” she said.
Bulls ready for Mazda Cup Mareeba Bulls coach Alex Srhoj has said this weekend’s Mazda Cup at Borzi Park is ‘definitely a priority’, with the Bulls heading into the weekend-long carnival looking to put the trophy back in the Mareeba clubhouse. The Bulls have enjoyed a undefeated start to the season so far, with two wins in the FFA Cup and head in the Mazda Cup this year better-prepared than last season, where they lost in the

By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Bandits will cruise into a home-game semi-finals match after a comfortable win over the Cairns Rovers at Kerribee Park on Sunday. Winning the toss, the Bandits went to bat against the second-placed Rovers for the last round of the season. Although Mareeba lost two wickets first up, captain Brendan Payne stepped in and began an unstoppable streak, walking off with 67 runs not out. He was supported by Michael Turner, who notched up 28 runs of his own. After 30 overs the Bandits were up 164 runs and down four wickets. After drinks, Mareeba’s bowlers
stepped up and performed admirably. Club president Bomber Adams took out two wickets, with Rob Wallace and Brett Pearce taking one each. In the end the Rovers only made it to 124 runs before being bowled out. Bandits spokesman Danny Shaw said the side had shown excellent skill, particularly praising Payne and Turner. “Brendan really just got in there and dominated,” he said. “Young Mike Turner put in a brilliant effort and we can see the results of that now. “It’s definitely good to be top of the table and guaranteed a home-game semi-final.” At the time of writing the Bandits’ opponent for the semi-finals is still yet to be decided.
decider 1-0 to the Marlin Coast Rangers. Srhoj warned his team not to become complacent, however. “It does not matter the results we have had so far,” he said. “This is our cup, our carnival, the first time we get to play in front of our fans and our club and the players are really keen to put in a strong effort. “We are in better shape this year
than last year, but so are the other clubs, they have all had 90-minute games and the weekend will be tough - we will have to fight for it.” The 2014 Mazda Cup will be of the biggest on record with 16 teams in two competitions, and 400 players expected to turn out over the weekend. The headline match on the Saturday night is Mareeba vs the Stratford Dolphins.
