Bulls clinch premiership titles
both the Mareeba Bulls premier and reserve teams clinched the FNQ Football Premiership titles on Saturday night at Borzi park. The premiers demolished contenders Edge Hill United 7-0 and the reserves 5-0. For a full wrap on sport and the Mareeba Bulls triumph turn to pages 25 to 27.
Helping the needy
COMMUNITY organisations from around the region gathered in Mareeba, last Tuesday, to highlight the range of services available to those in need. Held in the former Mareeba Mazda and Mitsubishi Showroom, the event saw more than 35 stalls set up to educate the community about what services are available and how to access them. Event organiser Rob Larkin said homelessness and other community issues were not always visible to the public in Mareeba but were certainly there. “Homelessness is hidden in our community, you don’t see homeless
people sleeping in doorways or on the street like you do in other cities,” Mr Larkin said. “But they’re out there in our community and this expo is about educating them and letting them know what’s available to them when they need it.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said that while he was disappointed a small rural community such as Mareeba needed to have such an expo, he was extremely pleased it was able to happen and that those who needed assistance were able to get it. “It was clear from my observation
GRANITE 186 on 203 Proposed for Construction on Lot 203 Tropic Coast Homes QBCC 1089966
that there were a number of people coming through that were seeking assistance, some of whom haven’t had assistance before,” Cr Gilmore said. “I think the expo may well have broken the mould for them and given them an opportunity to pick up the assistance they require.” Mr Larkin said organisers had tried to include a wide range of services and feedback from community members and exhibitors was encouraging. “All the feedback we’re getting will help us to improve the expo in years to come,” he said.
Organisers and exhibitors take time out of a busy day at the Expo to gather for a group picture.

Camp’s superhero fun day By Katherine Kokkonen SPLENDID superheroes and pretty princesses will have a chance to giggle and play at a Camp Quality Fun Day fundraiser. Youngsters and their families will have let their inner superheroes shine at the Fun Day at Atherton High School Hall, on Saturday, August 23. Year 12 student Amber Harper wanted to raise money as a way for her family to say thank you after they experienced laughs and fun times at Camp Quality. Amber’s little brother, Zavier, was diagnosed with leukaemia in July 2012 and has to have chemotherapy every four weeks until next September. The family has attended Camp Quality and said it helped the kids to have fun, while also allowing families in similar situations to come together, share experiences and support one another. Amber’s initial idea to have a dinner party fundraiser picked up momentum and turned into a family fun day after the Atherton High School Student Council decided to step in and fund the day as a way to get more people involved and raise awareness of Camp Quality. Amber was amazed by the help put in by fellow students, especially as they were giving up time during their final year at school. “It’s a big term for us and I was not

expecting everyone to warm to the idea,” she said. “It’s been great. I hope everyone has an amazing time and it will bring awareness because some people don’t even know what Camp Quality is. I’d love to raise a lot of money for Camp Quality because they have done so much for our family and I really want to give back.” Amber hoped to raise at least $500 for

It was on a different site from that of the present school and Miss Miriam Jacobs (later Mrs Howe) was the first teacher. The Dimbulah State School was opened on September 28, 1914, and its first pupils were children from the Hay, Fogarty, Grogan, Shanahan, Wallace

Gordon Hay has the distinction of being the very first child and his granddaughter, Glenda Khan (née Collins), is the current Dimbulah State School administration officer and has been working there for 40 years. Air crash simulation in Mareeba By Mark Rigby
REGIONAL emergency services put themselves to the test in a plane crash simulation on the Kennedy Highway, on Monday night, August 4. Members of Mareeba and Atherton’s Fire and Rescue Service, State Emergency Service personnel and even student doctors from James Cook University took part in the exercise, designed to train emergency services to work together in the event of a similar incident in the region. SES Area Controller and Mareeba Fire Station Captain Darryl Camp said the simulation involved a 10-seater passenger aircraft that had run out of fuel and was forced to crash land beside the highway. “I set this exercise up with the help of Jimmy Goldsmith from Mareeba Metal Merchants to practice all our skills and have a go at cutting up a plane which is something that we don’t get to do very often,” Mr Camp said.
Mr Camp said the exercise simulated three passenger casualties and the removal of six conscious and unconscious survivors from inside the plane’s fuselage. The tenth passenger was simulated to have been thrown from the plane upon crash landing, before coming to rest, still conscious, in a nearby field. “When we get a real incident out there in the real world, [Emergency services personnel] will be able to work closely with each other and understand what each other needs and have an understanding of what resources are available,” he said. “The SES set up this fantastic light-tower which is providing in close light around the accident scene to make it safer and easier for the guys to operate. “They’re also able to provide quite a bit of assistance in helping to move casualties, setting up triage areas and doing all the little jobs that would take the fires away from actually getting into the plane and rescuing people.”

Council looks at road upgrades By Katherine Kokkonen THE need for road upgrades to improve productivity and safety came under the spotlight at the last Tablelands Regional Council meeting. TRC will put forward three roads for consideration in Round Four of the Federal government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP). Round Four of the Australian Government initiative will provide up to $80 million over two years from 2014-15, and aims to improve safety and increase productivity of heavy vehicles by enhancing the capacity of existing roads and improving connections to freight networks. If council is successful in their grant application for the roads, council would need to fund 50 per cent of the project costs. At the TRC meeting on Thursday, Council decided to put forward the Tumoulin Road Trucking Pad, Brooks Road in Mungalli and Channel Road in Walkamin for consideration,
with council willing to provide up to $375,000 towards the cost of a successful project. National Road Freighters Association President Darryl Pedersen spoke at the meeting in support of the Tumoulin Road Trucking Pad and said it would help manage fatigue and increase productivity to farmers. “The sooner we can get this pad up and going, the better for all concerned,” Mr Pedersen said. “The trucking industry is a service industry that provides an essential service for all consumers around the country and the more efficiently we can do that, the better off for everybody.” TRC made an allocation for the construction of the Tumoulin Road Truck Pad of $150,000 in its 2013/14 capital works program. However following advice from the Department of Transport and Main Roads on the need to construct a new access to the proposed truck pad, the overall cost has come in at an estimated $750,000.
The preliminary estimate to survey, design and construct the new access adds $600,000 to the proposed project cost. The proposed Tumoulin Road Trucking Pad has raised alarm among some residents with Jonsson Road residents Owen and Kathy Jonsson submitting a letter to council detailing their concerns about the possible realignment of Jonsson Road, which would impede on their business and access to their property. Jonsson Road resident Renate Pramstaller also spoke at the meeting about the lack of community consultation that has taken place in regards to the proposed trucking pad. “I have lived there for a number of years and I’m quite frustrated and bewildered that there hasn’t been any form of official consultation that there might be a change to my access road,” she said.

Chance to have a say on Tinaburra Peninsula A Draft Master Plan which emphasises the Tinaburra Peninsula as a ‘place for all’ is open for public feedback. The Draft Master Plan prepared by consultants is available until August 22 with the public feedback period open until Friday, August 29. The Draft Master Plan proposes that Tinaburra Peninsula will continue to be a recreational destination for local residents and visitors alike. The plan underscores the peninsula as a ‘place for all’, where everyone can share in a range of recreation facilities. Key elements of the Master Plan include improved road and parking infrastructure, formalised pedestrian and cyclist network, safe swimming area, regional playground, enhanced picnic facilities, upgraded public toilets, improved event spaces, an environmental walk and improved
boat ramp facilities. Mayor of Tablelands Regional Council Rosa Lee Long called on the community to provide feedback on the Draft Master Plan for Tinaburra Peninsula. “Tinaburra Peninsula is a highly valued recreational asset, and many residents and visitors have already been involved in consultation for the project, so we know that interest is high,” she said. “We now ask the community to review the draft report and concept design that have been developed following community consultation and other research, and provide us with feedback on the direction proposed for the peninsula”, she said. The Draft Master Plan has been prepared by consultants Strategic Leisure Group in partner-

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift gives Far North Queenslanders and their TV watching habits a serious dose of reality - urging them to flick the switch.

Too much TV has serious health effects for Far North Queenslanders
Just in case adult themes, coarse language and sexual references weren’t enough to deter you from watching too much TV – maybe risk of early death will. New research reported in the Journal of American Heart Association found watching three or more hours of television a day can double your risk of dying young. Scientists studied 13,284 healthy volunteers with an average age of 37 to investigate the links between different kinds of sedentary behaviour and premature death. Over a period of eight years, they recorded 97 deaths from heart disease, cancer and other causes – the risk of death was twice as high for participants watching three or more hours of TV a day than those watching one hour or less. Television viewing is a major sedentary behaviour and the research shows there is an increasing trend toward all types of inactive behaviours. Let’s not become the land of couch potatoes! We have the highest rate of obesity in the country – more needs to be done to help people get healthy. Having a poor diet and inactive lifestyle can lead to overweight or obesity, which increases the risk of a range of chronic diseases – including some cancers. Getting your health back on track doesn’t necessarily mean overhauling your whole lifestyle – it can be a few small changes to your meals or physical activity habits that can make a big difference. Cut down the screen time, sit down to dinner with family or friends and be aware of your portion sizes. BOOKWORMS at Mareeba State High School gained some valuable insight last week when they were visited by an acclaimed Australian author. Author of more than 30 books, Phillip Gwynne spent time with students from Mareeba State High School’s Book Club last Tuesday, telling them about his experiences before, during and after becoming a published author. Mr Gwynne took questions from the students and told them to draw on their own real life experiences when writing.

“There are characters out there in life that you can’t make up,” Mr Gwynne said. “Use those gifts from the writing gods.” Book club member Caitlin Goodhew said the club consists of about 30 students, from Year 8 to 12, who meet fortnightly for an open discussion about a particular book or subject. “It’s a good way to bring together a group of students who wouldn’t know each other otherwise,” Ms Goodhew said. “Every year or two we have the chance to speak to authors and that’s great because as someone who loves to write, the more opinions you can get from authors, you can see how they work, how they process their book and how they create their art, it’s really influential.” Ms Goodhew said she was in the process of reading one of Mr Gwynne’s books but, since meeting him, planned to sit down and read more of them. Mr Gwynne also injected some humour into the session when asked to list three books he would choose to have with him if he were ever stranded on a deserted island. “I’d have the complete works of Shakespeare, probably ‘The Great Gatsby’ as that’s one of my all time favourites and, I’d have to say, ‘A Dummies Guide to Life on A Deserted Island’.”

rainforest with the regular spectacular views of the Coral Sea is superb by any standard. There are plenty of environmentally-conscious residents who see the advantages that preserving the existing range road has for Kuranda’s village-in-the rainforest image. In conflict with that objective is the fact that the Kennedy Highway is a major regional freight route. As a freight route the Kuranda Range road is woefully inadequate: it can’t accommodate B-double trucks and it is frequently closed by weather and crashes. The alternative routes from Cairns to the Tablelands, Cape and Gulf are the Gillies, Palmerston and Rex Ranges; all have similar problems and limitations as the Kuranda Range. If the Quaid Road were to be re-built and opened it would not help much as it is closer to the Rex Range Road than it is to the Kuranda Range road and is just too far out of the way to warrant the cost. The Kuranda railway line can’t serve as a freight route as the hand-built tunnels are too small to accommodate modern containerised freight; and, of course, railway lines are increasingly being removed as rail can’t compete with road freight. In all cases, major redevelopment of the range roads would result in massive delays and frustration for users for the decade such works would take. But there is an easy solution to link Cairns with its western neighbours without disrupting existing range crossings. It does not involve a billion-dollar tunnel, it does not interfere with Kuranda’s drawcards and it does not take any unnecessary detours across the Barron River. It is the Lake Morris-Davies Creek corri-
dor – an existing degraded track and powerline access through the Wet Tropics that lies on a near-straight line between Cairns and Mareeba. A modern highway could be built to worlds-best standards using short tunnels and bridges to reduce the number of bends and get a more constant gradient while maintaining forest connectivity. This route would bring Cairns and Mareeba up to 17 kilometres closer together by road, it would have a reduced landslip risk and it would provide an escape route straight to high ground for Cairns residents. It could be built without the extra construction costs and delays that come with building a road while allowing traffic to keep using it. After the 1999-2000 Kuranda Range consultations, about 4,500 Tablelands people signed a petition in support of a Lake Morris-Davies Creek road instead of a Kuranda Range upgrade. It went to State Parliament and was ignored. What is the price of continuing inaction on Far Northern regional roads – other than more injuries, deaths, delays and cost burdens? A succession of Mareeba mayors have been made aware of the Lake Morris-Davies Creek road idea and the ground-level support it has, yet they consciously and deliberately choose to “keep the focus on the Kuranda Range” - even though that strategy has been spectacularly unsuccessful so far. Today I am calling on Mayor Gilmore to begin considering the only viable alternative to solve the range crossing issue once and for all. Peter Campion Griffin Rd, Tolga ADVERTORIAL
I need a will, you need a will, everyone needs a will A lot of people think that if they don’t have a Will their family can look after their affairs after they pass, but not in Queensland. In Queensland if you die without a Will, your next of kin do not automatically gain the right to look after your property and finances; either the Public Trustee of Queensland steps in, or your family may have to make an application to the Supreme Court for what are known as Letters of Administration, which can be a very costly legal exercise. Some of the most common questions and thoughts are... I have no money to pay for a will. Even if you don’t have much money, or no money at all, leaving a simple Will lets your family know what you want to happen to your personal possessions, arrangements for your children and things such as funeral arrangements - a will can save your family a lot of unnecessary anguish trying to work out what you wanted. I have no money to leave behind. Sometimes you might think you have no money, but most people have money and life insurance through their superannuation fund; we commonly encounter cases where the deceased had no money in the bank, but unexpectedly and unbeknownst to family had superannuation and life insurance worth hundreds of thousands. Making a will is complex and expensive. Many people have the impres-

sion that making a Will is a complex or expensive exercise. But it doesn’t have to be either, things only become complex and expensive if your Will is not valid or if you die without a Will. Do I really need a solicitor to make my will? Why can’t I just use one of those Will kits or get a free Will with the Public Trustee? By Mark Rigby KURANDA Village could become a safer place if funding can be raised for closed circuit television surveillance of the tourism hotspot. President of the Kuranda District Chamber of Commerce, Robert Matthews said there are two aspects that demonstrate the need for CCTV surveillance of the village. “There’s a security aspect for property owners, after business hours, to be able to monitor what’s happening with regards to people walking around town,” Mr Matthews said. “The other aspect is, from a tourism point of view, it does allow us to offer tourists safety, security and protection as well. “If something does happen in town, whether they fall over, have an accident or, God forbid, there is a theft or something like that, at least then we would be able to track it and get onto it straight away so that there’s not an ill-feeling left by visitors to Kuranda.” President of the Kuranda District Residents Group, Garth Owen said that while the group did not have a firm policy on the installation of CCTV in Kuranda, there were reservations about the efficiency of the systems in reducing crime rates.
Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Tom Gilmore said CCTV surveillance is used successfully in Mareeba and the merits of CCTV surveillance in other areas had been demonstrated in the past. “If there’s an incident, police can go back and re-run the last 24 hours of that tape and say ‘that person was in that vicinity at that time’,” Cr Gilmore said. “You have seen that with the murder of [Jill Meagher] down south where they ultimately picked that person up by using CCTV.” Mr Matthews said up to seven cameras could be used to increase safety in Kuranda’s main tourism district, with funding being the only thing holding back their installation. He said business members of the Kuranda District Chamber of Commerce had been pushing for CCTV surveillance in the town for a number of years but a lack of funding has constantly thwarted efforts to have them installed. Cr Gilmore said he would be happy to talk to Council about spending money on the installation of CCTV in Kuranda if there is money left over in the budget. “We’ve got the tightest budget in Australia at the present time so we are spending money where we must, not where we might like to,” he said.

RESIDENTS of Millaa Millaa and Cooktown are being asked to consider whether they have what it takes to become an auxiliary firefighter. Part time job vacancies are currently available with Queensland Fire and Emergency Service stations in Millaa Millaa and Cooktown, as well as Tully and Cardwell. QFES Acting Innisfail Area Commander, Robert Herbohn said anybody can become an auxiliary firefighter, provided they are an Australian resident, are fit and healthy and have, or are willing to obtain, a Medium Rigid driver’s licence. Mr Herbohn put the call out to residents wishing to ensure the safety of their communi-
ty, saying that auxiliary firefighters provided an efficient and effective service. “The duties of an auxiliary firefighter can include turning out to house fires or bushfires, road traffic crash incidents, chemical spills and technical rescues, as well as building compliance inspections and community education,” Mr Herbohn said. “Applicants will undergo a selection process to ensure they are fit for duty and suited to the type of work to be undertaken as an auxiliary firefighter.” Anyone interested in becoming an auxiliary firefighter should contact QFES on 4061 0600.

Relay DIY Day
If you’ve been thinking about creating a team banner or sign for your campsite at Tablelands Relay For Life - we have you covered!
Organisers are hosting a Relay DIY Day for all participants at Bunnings Atherton on Saturday, August 30 from 9am - 12pm. This is your chance to create your very own team banner, baton, and letterbox or sign to take to Relay For Life in September. Bunnings have very generously donated materials for teams to use including paint, plywood, canvas, core flute and plenty of nuts and bolts. All participants need to provide is their own crafty material – glitter, pom poms, feathers and really, anything imaginable. It’s time to get creative, and get involved! Each year teams create large signs and banners with their team names on them to put on display around the track. This year, we encourage teams to continue that tradition and mark August 30 in their diaries.
With 26 teams already registered for the event, we hope to see an array of bright and creative team banners and outrageous costumes at Relay For Life. Team banners and costumes really brighten up the track and add to the festive atmosphere found at Relay. For those who decide to get colourful for the cause, we also have plenty of prizes up for grabs including best dressed team, the best banner, best baton and best campsite! If your team wants to join the Relay DIY Day down at Bunnings, we need to know. Phone Cancer Council Queensland’s Cairns office on (07) 4047 5500 to confirm your spot. Bunnings will put on a sausage sizzle for all teams who are involved in the DIY Day. Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on September 13-14 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register visit relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

Call for government intervention By Mark Rigby THE peak industry body for sugarcane growers fears that without government intervention the ongoing sugar marketing struggle with multinational milling corporations will go unresolved. Manager of Tableland Canegrowers, Bronwyn Dwyer said growers need the ability to choose where they market their sugar. “The sugar price is the sugar price. The pie is only so big. You have to ask the question as to why these international milling companies are taking growers away from their single desk marketing body,”
Mrs Dwyer said. “One can only assume that it is to just change the make-up of the pie so that they end up with more and the grower ends up with less,” she said. “It’s not a magic pudding, the pie is the pie, it’s all about how you divide it.” Mrs Dwyer said she would like to see growing and milling sectors come together and reach a conclusion about grower choice by themselves. “Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s going to happen, I think it’s going to take government intervention to get this grower choice through and that’s what we’ll be calling for,” she said.

OF THE YEAR AWARD
NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN
Wilmar Sugar Executive General Manager for North Queensland, John Pratt said the company looked forward to making a submission to a State Government inquiry into sugar marketing, particularly dealing with misconceptions about how sugar is marketed that have created concerns for growers. “Our main aim in proposing changes to sugar marketing is to generate the best returns for growers and Wilmar,” Mr Pratt said. Mrs Dwyer has called on government to formally recognise the sugarcane growers’ economic interest which will in turn lead to growers having the ability to choose where they market their sugar. “Leading into an election, canefarmers are monitoring government action on the issue and will likely vote with their feet if we don’t get grower choice through,” she said.
This award will recognise Outstanding Innovation and/or Exceptional Leadership in the Tableland Horticultural Industry
The award will be presented at the annual MDFVGA Dinner on September 12, 2014.

By Katherine Kokkonen A family dairy’s diversification into free range eggs is well on its way to hatching, following approval from the Tablelands Regional Council. The TRC granted a Material change of Use Development Permit to Mungalli Creek Dairy, which would allow for a free range chicken egg farm, with a maximum of 4,000 laying chickens. Mungalli Creek Dairy farmers Robert Watson and his partner Michelle Bell-Turner were relieved to have council’s approval and were looking forward to further diversifying their business. While it might seem unusual for a dairy to diversify into free range eggs, Ms Bell-Turner said they felt consumers were crying out for organically farmed eggs and felt that the diversification would integrate successfully with the dairy. “The whole basis of organic free range eggs is good pasture and being a biodynamic dairy farm with high quality pastures, it seemed like a logical progression that we could add into the business mix,” she said.

At a presentation on Thursday, Mr Watson told the TRC that being biodynamic provided Mungalli Creek Dairy with a point of difference and also gave them the confidence to diversify. “One of the key goals that Mungalli has is to show people that by tapping into niche markets and developing a quality product that there is a future for farmers and for young farmers to come back on the land,” he said. “We want to encourage other farmers to be entrepreneurs and see the myriad of opportunities present in the area and build towards building a prosperous and sustainable future that will be seen as a role model for other regions.” As well as approval for a free range chicken egg farm, Mungalli Creek Dairy received approval for milk bottling, egg storage and increased cheese and yoghurt production. Mr Watson said Mungalli Creek Dairy currently injects $1.8million in wages back into the community and in the near future hoped to employ up to 70 people in the local area.

Wet conditions couldn’t dampen the spirits of Mareeba netballers at the Regional Netball Fowlers Club Carnival. More than 70 teams competed over two days at the carnival, with Mareeba netballers showing they could mix it up with the best clubs in the region. The 13 years team dominated at the carnival in all aspects of the game. They were the team to beat with a winning combination of players who gained experience at the state championships combined with players who stepped it up to this level. The team won all their games to take out first place. A combination of 13, 14 and 15 year olds played together in the 16 year division and were a force to be reckoned with. These players showed a never-give-up attitude and combined it with skills of the game, winning most games during the weekend. This team came second in their division. On the first day of the carnival the 11 years team finished the day undefeated. Coming up against some stronger teams on the second day they continued to play well and came in third place at the end of the carnival. The 18 and under team were competitive after being placed in the Open Ladies Division 2 group. They defeated Innis-
fail and fought well during the carnival against tough opposition. With most of the team aged 16 years, they moved the ball well down the court and kept up with the physical pace of the game. In the 12 years division, the Mareeba Netball team played well in mostly wet and slippery conditions with defence turning over the ball creating opportunities for attack to score. With a number of players playing in different positions the team showed versatility throughout the carnival. The team finished in second place only going down to the top team. Mareeba Netball has a busy month ahead with two Representative teams heading down to Port Douglas for the 12 and Under and 14 and Under Regional Representative Carnival. The two teams have been training hard to warrant a place amongst the best in the Region. The club will also have junior teams play in the Douglas Junior Carnival, Tablelands Bridget Adams Cup for 12 years and Netta divisions and Cairns Carnival over the next two months. The Mareeba Netball weekly Saturday fixtures season will culminate with the season Grand finals and Presentations on 6th September at the Mareeba State Primary School venue.

Footy fanatics were treated to an action packed day of big hits and fast breaks, last Saturday, at Davies Park. The Gladiators put up a valiant effort against Innisfail Leprechauns but once again fell victim to unforced errors, with Innisfail taking out the match 26-18. Despite the loss, Captain Shana Aue was proud of his team and their performance against their fierce opponents. “They put in the effort. It was awesome and I’m really happy with the boys,” he said. “Some of us made mistakes, but that’s part of the game; you can’t play football without mistakes. I’m proud of the boys—they stepped up tonight and we gave the other team a run for their money. We only lost by eight points and we were right in the game.” The Gladiators will take on the Yarrabah Seahawks this weekend and Aue wanted the team to finish on a good note. “We want to finish the season on a high and
enjoy the rest of the football season,” he said. “Our last two games will be at home and we hope with the support of the crowd it will be awesome.” Innisfail Leprechauns Captain Ty Williams said it was a well-contested match with the Gladiators putting them under the pump early in the game. “We knew it was going to be a tough roadtrip. The last time we played Mareeba in Innisfail, they stuck it to us and they did it again tonight,” he said. “They are a big side and when they get going forward their hooker (Apenisa Cokanasiga) is outstanding. They are big, strong, physical and we’re lucky to come away with the points tonight.” The A-grade battle whetted the enthusiastic crowd’s appetite for the evening’s footy action between the Northern Pride and Souths Logan Magpies. The Magpies applied pressure early with the Pride having to fight back to go to halftime with the scores even at 8 all. The Pride re-
turned to the field with their heads back in the game and rampaged through the second half, keeping the Magpies scoreless and coming away with a 30-8 victory. Pride co-captain Jason Roos said the team was rusty at the start but they managed to get out of second gear towards the end of the game. “They (Magpies) came with a better attitude in the first half and they rolled their sleeves up and dominated us,” he said. Roos said it was a case of getting the Pride into the right headspace and being willing to do the little things right that saw the team lift in the second half. He said Sheldon PoweHobbs and Sam Obst put in particularly good performances to help the team win against the Magpies. Despite the win wrapping up the minor premiership for the Pride, the team will not be celebrating for too long, with their defence highlighted as a particular weakness. “We wrapped up the minor premiership, which is good, but it’s back to the drawing board,” Roos said.

Despite a low turnout, the message from Northern Pride players and Mayor Gilmore about the importance of the skate park is trickling down to users.
Skate park on thin ice By Katherine Kokkonen
A disappointing turn out to a skate park function and continued littering has put the future of the facility in doubt. Mayor Tom Gilmore was disappointed by the lacklustre turnout for a Pride in your Park event on Saturday. He had hoped the event would help skate park users to engage with sporting stars and develop a sense of ownership of the park. “We were hoping that we would have a lot more young people here to meet
the Pride players and to talk about having pride in themselves and their park,” he said. “This is, after all, their place—it is not mine—and it’s a disappointment that they didn’t come. We’re trying to get the message through to these young people here that it’s not to be trashed and they’ve got to learn to cherish it because they might lose it.” Following the disappointing turn out, Mayor Gilmore said council would not attempt to put on similar events.

Bulls edge Hill to win title Robert Pendenza, number 8, heads in Mareeba’s third goal.
The Mareeba Bulls made light work of their deciding tie against Edge Hill United, at Borzi Park, on Saturday night, by notching up seven unanswered goals against the Hill . With the match evenly balanced in the first 25 minutes, the Bulls put on a master class display to outgun United who had defeated the Bulls in their previous encounter. While the score line was a respectable one goal to nil at half time the Bulls quickly found their rhythm in the second half. After a scramble in the penalty area, the ball came loose to Wayne Srhoj who fired a rasping drive from the eighteen yard area to put the Bulls two up. Moments later Robert Pendenza scored a delicate header from close range. At 3-0, the Bulls were coasting and were unaware of results filtering through from the coastal match at Pennell Park where Marlin Coast Rangers had defeated FNQ Heat 3-1.
Sisters win at championships
Sisters Darcy and Erin Flannagan were onto a winning formula at the 2014 dressage competition.
Two sisters have strutted their stuff and won big in the Atherton Tablelands and District Dressage and Equestrian Association competition for 2014. Darcy Flannagan won both the junior preliminary and junior novice champion categories on Binnowie After Dark, while her older sister Erin won champion official medium and champion official advanced on her horse, Ordos. While they are very supportive of each other, Erin joked there would be sibling rivalry when Darcy starts moving up the levels. Erin said the relationship between horse and rider was paramount in the
dressage competition. “What we’re all trying to aim for is perfection,” she said. “The main thing is trying to bring out the expression and paces in the horses while still keeping them relaxed and sometimes that’s very hard to do.” President Margot Warnett said more than 30 horses competed in the high calibre competition over the weekend . “It was a wonderful day with riders from as far as Townsville competing at high and preliminary levels,” she said. The Dressage and Equestrian Association will now gear up for its next competition in early September.
With spectators in full cry, Larry Maggio scored the Bulls fourth after a delicate one two with Elliot Gardener. An own Goal and a further two from in form Paul Ruiz in the last five minutes of the match sealed the premiership for the Tableland club. Mareeba's reserves have also claimed the 2014 premiership title after results from the weekend went their way, including their 5-0 thumping of Edge Hill United on Saturday night. Paul Ruiz scored a hat trick while Danny Stowers collected another and Karl Srhoj scored a thundering header which keeps him in line for highest goal scoring honours in 2014. The match between the Bulls and Innisfail Brothers second division on Friday night was called off as the visitors could not field a team and therefore forfeited the match gifting the bulls with three points and three goals as they too look to secure the title.
