Thrilling display planned By Ryan Groube IT will be big and it will be noisy. That is the promise of Warbird Wings and Classic Car Airshow organiser Mike Spaulding as the popular annual event celebrates its sweet 16th on Sunday. More than 6000 are expected to flock to the Mareeba Airport where they will turn their eyes skyward for a day of thrilling aerobatics. Headlining the air-show this year is an MXSR, previously been flown by Aussie pilot Matt Hall in the Red Bull Air Race, as well as two Trojans, counter insurgency aircraft used primarily in
the Vietnam War. The MXS-R will be flown by Gold Coast based commercial airline captain Mike Greig who purchased the craft from Mr Hall. Mr Greig said the carbon-fibre plane could exceed speeds of 400 kilometres an hour, had a built in smoke system and at the height of his routine will cause him to pull up to nine times his body weight. “Most people start to black out at six g’s,” he said. “In the display I will be doing on Sunday I will be pulling up to nine g’s. At the other end of the scale are the Trojans
with a T28-A and T28-B model flying up from Toowoomba. These hulking machines have a three-tonne engine, 700-litre fuel tank and a wing to wing diameter of 40 feet. Toowoomba pilot Anthony Freer said are so loud “they make the ground shake”. Mr Spaulding said having the Trojans at the air show this year would be a “special treat” and would arguably be the highlight of the action in the skies. “They are big and they are noisy which is what people want to see,” he said. “We try and do something new every year and I think we have a really good show planned this time around.”
Mr Spaulding said that it was pleasing that members of the public continued to have a fascination with aircraft. Mr Spaulding said the event didn’t just cater to air show “enthusiasts” but was a family day. He said the classic car rally and military vehicle display, Harley Davidson bikes, and tours of the DC-3 would give people plenty to do on the ground. “Something else that a lot of people don’t know is that when we open the gates at 9am people can walk out onto the Tarmac and go up and look at the air planes from up close. A lot of the pilots are around and they are usually up for a chat,” he said.

Mareeba business wins major award A family-owned Mareeba business has taken out a major gong at the regional finals of the Queensland Training Awards. Redcorp, an earthmoving, mining and quarrying business, took out the Small Employer of the Year category at a glitzy presentation evening at the Hilton on August 3. The awards received more than 600 nominations and involved a rigorous selection process including a written submission and three phone interviews. Redcorp owner Ronnie Reddicliffe travelled to Cairns to accept the award. “I had never been to one of these before. It was a great night,” he said. Mr Reddicliffe took over the business from his father Ron two years ago. Redcorp has been operating in Mareeba since 1962 and employs 10 full time staff as well as 12 school based apprentices. Education, Training and Employment Minister John-Paul Langbroek congratulated the local winners who will now go on to vie for the state awards.

wo groups of Mareeba State High School (MSHS) students have proven that small regional schools can hold their own against rivals from the big city. Year 10 students Carl Martens, Caitlin Goodhew, Carla Newlands, Adina Heggie and Sam Harris travelled to the University of Queensland in Brisbane for the Australian Brain Bee Challenge finals on June 18. They faced-off against about 40 schools from all over the state, including high-ranking Brisbane-area institutions in a brain-straining team challenge and neuroscience quiz. The team placed third, behind the elite institutions Brisbane State High School and Sommerville House, and were the only team to be offered a one-week work experience program at the Queensland Brain Institute at the end of the year. Team member Adina Heggie said the students felt “amazed” to do so well against prestigious big-city schools. “The Brain Bee Challenge was very fun and interesting – we weren’t used to the city and we knew there was some serious competition there,” she said. “There were other country schools at the challenge and they were cheering us on at the end because they knew what it was like for little schools in this sort of thing. We’re thrilled we got the work experience program and we’re glad we did Mareeba proud.” A separate group of Year 11 students consisting of Liam Posselt, Jack Stewart and Brooke Buckingham attended the Queensland Uni-

Only 40 students from across the state were selected for the camp, which challenged students to tackle global environmental, energy, medical or food problems using their chosen disciplines. At a school assembly on August 6, MSHS principal Jo Soothill and the school’s Gifted and Talented coordinator Christina Ellacott lauded the achievements of the two teams
of students. Also in attendance was Education Queensland’s Assistant Regional Director for Far North Queensland, Graham Fuller, who applauded MSHS’s academic record. “Mareeba has created opportunities for its students,” he said. “They pay attention to the details of the different areas of students, whether they are academically-minded or more into other areas. “I don’t think a lot of regional schools achieve to the same levels that Mareeba State High does.”

Councils could manage flying foxes
John Banning from Cairns with kids Trinity and Clayton trying to get rich quick at the North Queensland Gold Panning Championships at the Mareeba Heritage Museum on Saturday.
A proposal by the State Government to make the management of flying foxes the responsibility of local government has drawn fire from the Tableland Regional Council (TRC). In a discussion paper the Government proposed to give councils “as-ofright” authority to disperse flying fox colonies on their land, with the stated aim of streamlining the application process for a permit to manage them. Flying fox colonies can arrive at and leave from an area quickly as they search for food, and by giving councils as-of-right authority, the Government hopes allow faster action against
Gold panning champs 11 panning challenges, including juniors, opens and team panning sessions. There were also ‘fun panning’ barrels set up to give kids a go at the craft, in addition to raffles, a photo competition and a game of ‘Stake Your Claim.’ The Palmer River group won the team category, while Tess Willis won the Opens Category. Scott McKeown won the Most Skilled men’s category and Valerie Wilson won the Most Skilled women’s category. The monthly Mareeba markets were also held next door at Centenary Park at the same time, with plenty of interested people drifting over for a look. Event co-ordinator Lyn Byrne said the day had been very successful with a high turnout. “This is probably the most people we’ve

“GOLD!” was the cry out the front of the Mareeba Heritage Museum on Saturday as miners and amateur enthusiasts alike gathered to stake their claim during the North Queensland Gold Panning Championships. Run by the North Queensland Mining Association, the Championships challenged contestants to find miniscule gold flecks within massive tubs of gravel and water, with cash prizes and medallions awarded to the fastest panners. Contestants also got to keep any gold they found, but certainly wouldn’t be able to retire on the proceeds, with each fleck only having a tiny value. The event attracted about 100 people from across northern Queensland, and ran across
ever had here for a day – we’ve had steady, excellent numbers and the competitors and kids have loved it,” she said. “We started this event really as just a social get-together, because the miners are all spread across such a huge area up there they don’t see each other much, so we get them all here for a bit of fun, plus it helps promote small miners. “Some of the old guys here today have been doing this their whole lives, and they come from all over.” Palmer River team member Tim Land, from Tolga, is one of those old-timers. Now 87, he has prospected up the Palmer, the Mulgrave, at Mt Surprise and all up and down Cape York. He never did strike it rich but found himself being paid in gold nuggets at one point.

the animals, which can raise the ire of residents they roost near, in addition to carrying potentially deadly viruses. ‘As-of-right’ authority means that council could act immediately when a roost is identified. The TRC, however, has labelled the proposal an attempt to further offload responsibility for flying fox management onto cashstrapped councils, and has called for a detailed code of practice for councils to follow if the changes are accepted. The Government has denied it is offloading responsibly and said that a code is being developed.

he Tableland’s role in World War II was remembered at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park on Sunday. Led by Vietnam veteran John Hardy and Tablelands Regional Councillor Marjorie Pagani, about 300 people including former soldiers, their families and cadets gathered at the park to pay respect to those fallen in the line of duty. Member for Cook David Kempton, Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth, Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long and Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Bill Shannon also attended the event. The event was marked with the dedication of plaques to those who served on the park’s memorial wall, the unveiling of a new monument stone and a low-altitude flyover by two Vietnam-era Trojan warplanes.
The Army’s 51 Battalion had a presence at the event with some high-tech reconnaissance gear on display, while the next generation of soldiers was represented by the 114 ACU Atherton cadets. The National Servicemen’s Association Tableland branch, the Atherton Lions Club, Eacham Historical Society, Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club and the Tablelands Military Vehicles Club also had a presence at the memorial. The Rocky Creek War Memorial Park was the site of a massive military hospital during World War II, and the Tablelands served as an important staging and training area for Allied forced throughout the Pacific campaign. Member for Cook David Kempton said he was proud to support the Tableland’s military history. “I think it’s very important that we remember the sacrifice and contribution that these men and women made for our sake,” he said.

Coles Mareeba staff Mark Metcalf, Blake Ashford, Brett Cook with manager Shane Wallace in front of the store’s new fresh produce section, installed as part of a recent $800,000 upgrade
New look for Coles Coles Mareeba is showing off a new-look store with new features as part of a $6 million investment in the supermarket giant’s stores across the region. The Byrnes Street store has been outfitted with a new fresh produce section reminiscent of a farmer’s market, complete with ice bunks to keep fruit and vegetables cool but still accessible. Other additions include a new cheesecake case and a new chicken stand, in addition to new paint and new signage throughout the store. An opening ceremony occurred at the store at 7:30am on August 7, featuring a celebratory cake and an appearance by Coles regional manager Jason Millard. The total cost for the upgrades to the Mareeba store comes to about $800,000, with Coles spending 20 million the region between Innisfail, Port Douglas and Mareeba in the last four years and $6 million in that area in the last 18 months. The spending spree is a calculated strategy to keep stores in good condition and remain exciting to customers. Coles Mareeba employs 102 staff, making it one of the town’s largest employers, and a significant percentage of the town’s population shop there every day. Works were carried out at night to minimise disruption to shoppers.

17-25 AUGUST Respect & Social Inclusion for Seniors
By Boyd Robertson An appeal by fallen pub magnate Tom Hedley to put off charges on an expansion to an Atherton hotel has been knocked back by the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC). At the August 2 meeting, Councillor Peter Hodge moved that water and sewerage infrastructure charges for an expansion of the Carrington Hotel in Atherton’s main street be paid in instalments over the next three years instead of up front. The motion was defeated 5-3. Mr Hedley had originally requested the charges, totalling about $55,000, be entirely deferred until 2016. The development, originally approved by council on December 20, would result in the demolishing of the hotel’s bottle shop and the expansion of dining room, as well as adding extra poker machines and TAB facilities. Council had already reduced Mr Hedley’s charges for extra car parking space by about $53,000. Cr Hodge’s motion met stiff opposition from most councillors, but was supported by Mayor Rosa Lee Long and Deputy Mayor Evan McGrath. Cr Hodge argued deferring the developer chargers would encourage the expansion and promote economic activity in the midst of a financial crisis. “The idea was to give them a hand in expanding which is hard in these economic times,” he said.
club news Monthly catch-up with the mAREEBA lions club Mareeba Lions want to hear from you. What would you like to see the Mareeba Lions Club doing in your community? Please give us your feedback. Another very successful Mareeba Rodeo has been held. Mareeba Lions and Lionesses are proud to continue a long association with the Mareeba Rodeo committee and congratulate the committee on a job well done. Congratulations also to all of the wonderful young women who participated in the Rodeo Queen competition. Congratulations to the winners and especially to the Lions Club entrant Taralee Thies who was a great representative of Lions International. Being a Lion is not all work and no play. Recently the Mareeba Lions and Lionesses enjoyed a weekend away in Cooktown, seeing the sights, fishing and just relaxing and enjoying each other’s company.
Christmas in July has been and gone. Mareeba Lions and Lioness as usual had the very popular banana fritter stand, and this year will also have some hearty pumpkin soup, and lamingtons. A fuel raffle, courtesy of Reliance Petroleum was drawn at Davies Park on the day. A big thank you to Dennis Howe of Howe Farming for donating all of the bananas used on the day. We know people are already hanging out for another banana fritter next year. Invitations are now out for the 2013 Pink Ribbon Garden Party, a popular event which raises money for the Cancer Council Queensland. Recently LCIF announced the expansion of the

“This will create a lot of jobs – there’ll be about 15 jobs to come out of the expansion over six months and it should mean about 20 positions created when it’s finished.” Councillor Sharon Linwood was particularly vocal in her opposition to the idea. “If they can’t pay for this now, what makes anyone think that they will still be in business in three years to pay it back then?” Cr Hodge rejected criticism of the proposal and warned rejecting it could deter other businesses from trying to expand. “I think it’s ridiculous,” he said. “There’s no risk to council because the infrastructure chargers are incorporated onto the land charges anyway, just like paying rates. “There’s always that risk (now the proposal is rejected) that it becomes a message to other people that want to invest saying ‘council is pretty negative on this sort of thing’.” Council has no formal policy in place for considering requests of this type. Mr Hedley and the management of the Carrington Hotel had no comment on whether the expansion would continue. A self-made millionaire from Cairns, Tom Hedley’s business empire of pubs, hotels and other businesses came crashing down during the Global Financial Crisis.
Special Olympics International Opening Eyes program. Lions and LCIF will continue to provide needed vision services to people with intellectual disabilities. Through this global partnership, Lions will also provide service through hearing health, family support, advocacy, athlete leadership opportunities, membership development and more. One other way that Lions meet humanitarian needs is through the One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative. Together, we will continue the fight against measles and rubella worldwide. In Hamburg, LCIF announced a partnership with the GAVI Alliance, along with a new fundraising challenge and matching grant to combat measles around the world. We are excited to continue this life-saving work through LCIF. No child should go blind or die from measles. With our global reach and support, we can create an impact. Lions will raise US$30 million by 2017. The funds raised by the Lions will be matched by the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing the total to US$60 million. Our work to meet needs around the world isn't always through planned efforts. When the unexpected happens, we are there ready to help. A recent example of this is in the Himalayas, where there has been severe flooding. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted. To support Lions' relief efforts in affected areas, LCIF provided grants totalling US$130,000. It is thanks to the generous financial support of Lions that LCIF is able to act quickly following a devastating disaster. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. Fellowship, Good times, Meeting people, Building lasting friendships, Service to the community, Learning new skills, Leadership and personal development - these are some of the reasons we are the Lions. If you want to be part of this great humanitarian organisation contact membership chairman Gilbert Teitzel on 4092 8066. Lions meet in Mareeba at the Mareeba RSL at 6.30 pm on the first and third Wednesday of the month.

Cane farmers go on mill tour By Ryan Groube
S
ugar cane farmers for 15 years, Vince and Palmina Cabassi had until last week never been inside a working mill. That changed on August 6 as Mackay Sugar took 53 Tableland cane growers for a tour of the Mossman Mill. In April, Tableland Canegrowers signed a rolling five year contract to supply about 700,000 tonnes to Mackay Sugar’s Mossman Mill. The tour was an opportunity to local growers to inspect the facility where their cane will be crushed from 2014. For Mr and Mrs Cabassi the tour was an eye opening experience and one they hoped to repeat “when it is our cane being crushed”. “It was very interesting. It is amazing how much is involved in the process,” Mrs Cabassi said. “Obviously we see how it is grown on the farm but once the truck comes and picks it up that was about it. It was good to see the next stage.” Cane growers arrived at the Mossman Mill at about 10am and were greeted by Mackay Sugar chief executive Quinton Hildebrand and Mossman
Mill manager Haydn Slattery. The tour began at about 10am and lasted just over two hours. In five rough groups of 10, the visiting farmers inspected the boiler rooms, science labs and the old single men’s barracks and site museum. Mr Hildebrand said the tour was a chance for growers to get a greater understanding about what happened at the mill. “Today was all about developing that real partnership with the growers. We are both invested in understanding each other’s businesses,” he said. “The fact that we are in the middle of our operations for the year to get 53 farmers down to this is a very pleasing turn out.” Mr Slattery said the Mossman Mill was ahead schedule and had reached a crush rate of 310 tonnes an hour. “We have crushed for six of the seven weeks of the season so far and although we had a breakdown two weeks ago we are still well ahead of target,” he said. “The 310 tonnes an hour is what we are hoping to achieve [once the Tableland cane comes online in 2014] and so far the plant reliability has been

Mr Hildebrand said in 2014, the Mossman Mill would move to a seven-day crushing program and as such it was vital the equipment was reliable. “So far we have been very pleased with the performance of the factory this year. It will be a bit different next year though when we move to a continuous crush because we won’t have the
luxury of doing weekend maintenance,” he said. Improving reliability at the Mossman Mill will see Mackay Sugar fork out $4 million to improve aged boilers as well as access “bottlenecks at the mill”. Mossman Mill also told cane farmers that they had gone to tender for a logistics operator to transport the cane from the Tableland to the mill. Tableland Canegrowers were delighted to have been given the opportunity to visit the mill and “enjoyed a very hospitable day”.

EXPRESS sPORT RESULTS & DRAWS MAREEBA BASKETBALL INC. SUMMER SEASON FIXTURES Closely contested Senior Men’s fixtures should be a feature of this week’s round of the Mareeba Basketball Competition. All four Men’s teams appear evenly matched so many weekly fought encounters are likely to eventuate during the season. Under 16 Juniors provided a highlight of fixtures played last week, with Flamingoes and Panthers playing an exciting 32 all draw. A number of players on both sides contributed towards sharing the championship points. Although 12 points by Tyson Tatti proved vital for Flamingoes and a strong performance by Lochlan Anthony kept Panthers within striking distance of Flamingoes. Players should note that all registration fees are required to be paid in full by the 4th round of fixtures. (30TH AUGUST 2013) IF NOT PAID IN FULL YOU WILL NOT TAKE THE COURT. We join a good little witch who sets out to save Fairytale Land with the help of the Big Bad Wolf and Cinderella. This a Fairy Tale Mystery that puts a new twist on some famous fables such as Humpty Dumpty, Pinocchio, Little Red Riding Hood, The Wizard of Oz and Hansel and Gretel. This Friday and Saturday, August 16 and 17, Mareeba Theatre Group’s new premises will transform into “Fairytale Land” with this year’s Little Theatre’s production of Holka Polka. Director, Annalisa Savaglio, has worked with 17 children, from the age of 7 to 10, for 12 weeks. They have learnt lines and attended workshops to help develop their characters and voice projection. The children come together from many of the local schools, including Mareeba State School, St Thomas’s Primary School, Walkamin State School and even a family of homeschooled children. The children have
developed good friendships over this time as they join in a number of fun activities developing drama and theatrical elements. This year, Mareeba Theatre Group had to split the Junior Theatre into two categories as we had an overwhelming 35 children respond to auditions. The younger group has taken the name of Mareeba Little Theatre and includes Kara Cazzola, Tahlia Spena, Kate Baksaj and Tonia-Maree Rantucci who have been involved in previous years’ productions. With the younger age group we also have 10 children making their stage debut. Tickets are on sale now from Mareeba Travel Experience.com.

Memorial trophy win for Musmarra
Drivers pay their respects to departed Mareeba Motor Racing Club stalwart Joan Holden who passed away in 2012. Inset, Brady Musmarra, 15 took out the inaugural Joan Holden Top Gun award at the club’s August 4 meeting. He is pictured with club vice-president Luke Dougherty.
By Ryan Groube A young man a fortnight away from applying for his Learners licence was the fitting winner of the Mareeba Motor Racing Club’s inaugural Joan Holden Top Gun award. Mrs Holden was a founding member of the then Mareeba Speedway Club, her husband Max was the club’s inaugural president. She
passed away in late 2012. In recognition of Mrs Holden’s contribution to racing in Mareeba, the club decided to rename its annual trophy day, held on the first weekend of July, the Joan Holden Memorial Top Gun Trophy Day. The major award is the Top Gun trophy, donated to the club by Mr Holden, which is presented to the driver who achieves the highest
overall points for the day in all classes from juniors through to A Grade. At the end of the July meet, a tie between Brady Musmarra, 15, and Michael Wilkinson forced a tie breaker to be held at the club’s August 4 race day. Brady got the better of Michael, winning C Grade, while Michael came home third. Talking to The Express from his home at the Sunshine Coast, Mr Holden said he was delighted a young up and coming racer had taken out the inaugural award. “I am definitely delighted [it was a young racer],” he said. “The whole reason we set up the club was so youngsters could get in and learn early. “Speedway is such a good way to give young people a chance to get driving experience before we put them out on the roads.” In 1972, the then Mareeba Speedway Club was formed in a bid to provide a safe place for young people to learn to drive following a spate of deaths on the Tableland as a result of illegal racing on public roads. The Holdens lost a son in a car accident. Mareeba Motor Racing Club vice-president Luke Dougherty said the impact the Holden’s had on motor racing in Mareeba couldn’t be underestimated. “We were only to willing to rename our race day because without those two we wouldn’t have had a race track in Mareeba today,” he said. “It was good to see one of the Mareeba kids take it out. The club has made a major effort over the past two years to focus on our juniors and develop a bit of a nursery for future years. “Our strongest class at the moment has been
our juniors and although our top classes are struggling a bit the idea is that the young ones will come through the ranks.” Brady said he was honoured to be the first winner of the award. The Year 11 student at Mareeba State High School said he couldn’t wait to go for his Learners licence and that he had no intention of giving up racing. “Going into the corners is definitely the best bit,” he said. “I am going to keep racing but I reckon they’ll make me go up a division next year.” Brady drives a VN Commodore that he purchased earlier this year and is sponsored by Repco. His twin Callem and mother Raywin also race. The club races on the first Sunday of the month.

Briggs smashes record, Olympian in 10K classic Mareeba runner Thomas Briggs set a course record in the Townsville Airport 10K classic at the annual Townsville Running Festival on August 4. Briggs completed the course in 32 minutes and 43 seconds, carving 54 seconds off the previous record set in 2011. He beat home festival guest and four-time Olympian Steve Moneghetti – although Briggs, along with the rest of the field, was given a twominute head start over the 52-yearold. Briggs said he owed his win to sticking to his planned race strategy. “I had a pretty good idea of the splits I wanted and the pace I’d need to run, so I took it nice and slow in the first kilometre or so until I found my rhythm,” he said. “I’ve been racing well in Cairns recently with good times of about 31 minutes, so I felt confident going in that I could come close to setting a new record. That said, it can all come down to the conditions on the day, and with only small wind to battle, they really were in my favour. “I’m heading to the Bridge to Brisbane in a month, so it was nice to get a bit of distance under my belt before then. I hope to finish the 5K in Brisbane in under 15 minutes.” A Mareeba State High School graduate, 22-year-old Briggs is in his fifth and final year as a dentistry student at James Cook University in Cairns.
He still lives in Mareeba and his training spot of choice is the MSHS oval. Briggs was among a record number of runners for the Townsville Running Festival, with 2,664 people taking part in six events – the Townsville Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K Classic and a series of five kilometre fun runs and walks. Cairns runner Susan Crowe came third in the women’s marathon and Nick Carling finished second in the Half Marathon. Running Festival spokesperson Melissa Graham said organisers were delighted with the event’s turn out. Thomas Briggs crosses the finish line at the 10K “We’d set ourselves a classic held as part of the Townsville Running Picture: SuperSport Images goal of 2,500 runners this Festival on August 4 year and thanks to a late runners and people giving longer surge in registrations on Saturday increased our competitor distances a go, which is what the numbers by more than 22 per cent Townsville Running Festival is all about. Congratulations to everyone compared with last year,” she said. “More than 400 runners travelled who took part in the Festival and from outside of Townsville to take made it the best one in the event’s 15 part, with a large portion of those be- year history.” Major sponsors of the event ining our neighbours from Cairns and Mackay. We’re always pleased to clude, McDonalds, Tony Ireland welcome back our regular visitors Holden, Queensland Country Health and are thrilled with the support we and Townsville Airport. The 2014 Townsville Running receive from other running clubs and individuals across North Queensland. Festival will be held on Sunday, 3 “We also had a lot of first time August, 2014.

Quad ride wrap By Dick Eussen The first organised quad ride to the tip of the Cape York Peninsula and back had a successful ending on July 29 at Yungaburra. The 10-day ride commenced at Port Douglas. It was sponsored by Can-Am Australia, Atherton’s Extreme Motorcyles and Weipa Auto. Thirteen riders, who hailed from Darwin, Tasmania, NSW, Weipa,
Cairns and the Tablelands, rode in the event. There were some spills but no one was hurt. Most rides were on rugged historic and forgotten tracks ranging across the Cape from the east to the west coast. Over 3200km was racked up on the bikes. Darwin’s Sandie Presneill was the only women rider in the event and the first woman to ride to the Cape and back on a quad bike in an official event.

Teece, Ericson win at Mt Carbine The Mt Carbine Bull and Bronc Ride has wrapped up after a night of revelry and pulse-pounding entertainment with Cody Teece winning the Open Bull ride and Billy Ericson winning the Open Saddle Bronc ride. Five hours of intense man-vsbeast action at the Mt Carbine Sports Grounds had the thousands-strong crowd cheering well into the night as riders from all over took on prize bulls and broncs for a $5000 top purse. Event president Alan Pedersen said the night was a great success with high-quality competition throughout.
“It was a great night and great crowd and some very impressive rides here tonight,” he said. “A lot of young fellas coming thought, especially from Kowanyama, Chillagoe and the Cape, they keep coming through and this is the highest nominations in bulls we’ve had this year.” Pedersen said the combination of a relatively short event combined with a small area actually contributed to the Bull Ride’s success and popularity. “I think it’s an action-packed five hours,” he said.
“We put a lot of action and events into a small amount of time, plus it’s a small arena so people can see what’s going on up close, that’s what I think makes it what it is.” pens saddle bronc winner Ericson was brash about his performance atop the bronc in the Open category, describing the ride as “pretty casual” and reckoning the Bushman’s category as more challenging. “It’s the first saddle bronc I’ve been on in about ten years, the eight seconds on it were pretty casual, it was a good casual ride,” he said.

Tigers dash Gators Bulls, Port Douglas draw The Mareeba Gladiators A Grade side’s hopes for a top three finish for the 2013 season have been dashed after a 34-16 loss to the Tully Tigers on Saturday. Mareeba’s Reserve Grade continued their blitzkrieg of the season, taking down their Tiger
opponents with a narrow 16-12 win. There was no C Grade game and the Under 18s Gators forfeited. Captain-coach Rod Jensen, along with forwards Joe Sio and Paul Alofi were the ‘Gators’ try-scorers for the night, with Jason Lea landing
two conversion attempts. Jensen suffered debilitating damage to his rib cage while wingers Azar Gutchen and Tom Hughes left the field with an injured hand and leg, respectively. The Gladiators go up against the Innisfail Leprechauns this Saturday.
Roosters plucked The Atherton Roosters have gone down against Ivanhoes after a close-run game at Atherton Showgrounds on the weekend, losing 44-32. Coming off a defeat against Mareeba in the Tableland Derby, the Roosters went in with a grim resolve but were unable to take the lead, tenaciously following Ivanhoes’ score to the very end. Atherton’s try-scorers for the night were Waylon Joseph, Jake Rivett, Nathan Curcio, Victor Akiba and Colt Tairuia, with Marcus Pedro making one conversion, Curcio two
and Joseph one. Joseph had a particularly impressive night, landing two tries and leading many of Atherton’s plays for the night. Roosters secretary Darryl Day had nothing but praise for the team after the game. “The boys had a good one, Ivanhoes were up only by two points at halftime and we did try to come back but they just got away from us,” he said. “Waylon Joseph had a really good game all round, he was right in the middle of it a lot of the
time and he got a conversion too.” Although a defeat, the game continues the trend of increasingly good offensive work by Atherton at this end of the season as they recover from obliterations by Yarrabah and Brothers Cairns in July, taking out Mossman 56-6 on July 27 and going down swinging against Mareeba with 22 points on August 3. Atherton remains on the bottom of the CDRL ladder with six season points but still hope to be a thorn in the side of the other teams.
The Mareeba Bulls have finished up with a 2-2 draw against Douglas United in Mossman on August 9. They are now three points clear at the top of the table, with only two games remaining. Despite the Bulls being two goals down in the first half, excellent shots by Robert Pendenza and Paul Ruiz returned them to parity
but a deadlock-breaking third goal eluded them for the rest of the game. Bulls player Dennis Allen’s remaining season is in doubt after receiving a red card, while Douglas United also picked up a red card during the game. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said his team had “worked their arses off” and accepted the draw only grudgingly.
