Thrilling display planned By Ryan Groube IT will be big and it will be noisy. That is the promise of Warbird Wings and Classic Car Airshow organiser Mike Spaulding as the popular annual event celebrates its sweet 16th on Sunday. More than 6000 are expected to flock to the Mareeba Airport where they will turn their eyes skyward for a day of thrilling aerobatics. Headlining the air-show this year is an MXSR, previously been flown by Aussie pilot Matt Hall in the Red Bull Air Race, as well as two Trojans, counter insurgency aircraft used primarily in

the Vietnam War. The MXS-R will be flown by Gold Coast based commercial airline captain Mike Greig who purchased the craft from Mr Hall. Mr Greig said the carbon-fibre plane could exceed speeds of 400 kilometres an hour, had a built in smoke system and at the height of his routine will cause him to pull up to nine times his body weight. “Most people start to black out at six g’s,” he said. “In the display I will be doing on Sunday I will be pulling up to nine g’s. At the other end of the scale are the Trojans

with a T28-A and T28-B model flying up from Toowoomba. These hulking machines have a three-tonne engine, 700-litre fuel tank and a wing to wing diameter of 40 feet. Toowoomba pilot Anthony Freer said are so loud “they make the ground shake”. Mr Spaulding said having the Trojans at the air show this year would be a “special treat” and would arguably be the highlight of the action in the skies. “They are big and they are noisy which is what people want to see,” he said. “We try and do something new every year and I think we have a really good show planned this time around.”

Mr Spaulding said that it was pleasing that members of the public continued to have a fascination with aircraft. Mr Spaulding said the event didn’t just cater to air show “enthusiasts” but was a family day. He said the classic car rally and military vehicle display, Harley Davidson bikes, and tours of the DC-3 would give people plenty to do on the ground. “Something else that a lot of people don’t know is that when we open the gates at 9am people can walk out onto the Tarmac and go up and look at the air planes from up close. A lot of the pilots are around and they are usually up for a chat,” he said.
