Council business unsettled

A fortnight has passed since the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) split from the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) but the de-amalgamation process remains incomplete.

Key financial data, including the split of cash, debt and reserves has yet to be finalised with both councils unsure about how much money they have in the bank.

Accounting consultant Crowe Horwath submitted a second draft of balance sheets to the TRC and MSC early in the year with staff from both councils reviewing the figures.

Once the figures have been reviewed, they will be forwarded to the TRC’s independent auditor, Pacifica, and an independent contractor for the MSC, Orion Consulting.

The de-amalgamation transfer committee – acting MSC chief executive Rod Ferguson and TRC chief executive Ian Church – will then choose to accept, or reject, the report.

“We would rather have had this finished before the first of January but I’d much rather be sure we get the right outcome,” Mr Ferguson said.

Time has become a critical factor with the MSC needing to bring down a six-month budget before the end of January. Mayor Tom Gilmore said despite the looming deadline the council did want to make changes to the existing MSC budget which was brought down by the TRC last year.

The TRC’s 2013-14 budget included a six month budget for the amalgamated council and then two separate six month budgets for the new MSC and the remnant TRC. Recognising the tight timeframe facing de-amalgamating councils, Local Government Minister David Crisafulli has waived a key element of budget preparation legislation.

“Under changes to the Local Government Act, the Mayor is in control of preparing the budget and councillors are guaranteed two weeks to have input,” Mr Crisafulli said. “Until now, councillors didn’t have protection through legislation guaranteeing them any access to the budget.”

TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long, however, said the failure to complete the financials involved with the split proved that the de-amalgamation process had been too hasty.

“It shows that the nine months the Queensland Government gave us to do this split was simply not enough time,” she said.

“In this case we are talking about a very, very important part of the split.

The figures are in the process of being checked and double checked but we are still unclear as to what the final figures will be.

“It is frustrating because we can’t move forward with absolute certainty until the final decision is made.”

Mr Gilmore will call a special meeting of council towards the end of January to bring down the MSC budget.

Book is eerily relevant

A new book about two of the Tableland’s most influential doctors has provided an eerily relevant warning about the challenges of maintaining a decentralised health system in rural and remote areas.

Former Mareeba dentist Geoff Grundy has released a new book Two Enquiring Minds which brings together two edited biographies penned by Dr Jarvis Nye and Dr Patrick Flecker.

Leslie John Jarvis Nye worked at the Atherton Hospital from July 1917 until August 1926; during that time he was appointed superintendant and established a private hospital for maternity cases in 1922.

Patrick Flecker, known universally as Pat, started work at Mareeba Hospital in 1946 as a resident medical officer and was appointed superintendent in 1953 following a brief stint in Charters Towers.

During his career, Dr Flecker was invited by the president of the Australian Medical Association in Queensland to deliver the 38th Jackson Memorial Lecture.

Dr Flecker’s lecture, The Northern Paranoia, was subsequently published in the Medical Journal of Australia in 1968 and shows remarkable foresight in the challenges that face rural hospitals today.

“Mareeba can now be reached from Brisbane in little over three hours – two in a jet aircraft and one in a conventional motor car. The distance is short in time, moderate in distance and unbelievable in the standard of

medical practice,” he said.

The title of the lecture The Northern Paranoia is based on what Dr Flecker also refers to as ‘the Brisbane syndrome’ where residents in rural areas, of all ages and professions, believe the prosperity of the region is undermined by authorities for the benefit of residents from the state’s capital.

“The local doctor listens to this conversation, time and time again, patronisingly at first. After a few months of failing to get a reasonable standard of treatment for his patients, he himself becomes infected and often becomes the most paranoid of them all,” he said.

“By process of rationalisation he will assume that all competent graduates are prevented from leaving the teaching hospitals in the capital city, and those who, because of inferior talents, are not wanted there, will be compelled to come to the county for jobs.

“Can anything be done to treat this widespread ailment? I believe that much not only can, but should be done.

“I am not suggesting that such facilities such as cardiac surgery or supervoltage radiotherapy be placed in every small town in the State, but merely that adequate diagnostic services should be within reasonable reach of them all.”

Dr Nye moved to the Tableland from Brisbane in 1917 seeking a “restful” rural lifestyle.

battles between medicine and faith and the challenges associated with fulfilling his goal of making Atherton “one of the best country hospitals in Queensland”.

Dr Nye said after 10 years his workload in Atherton had left him completely burned out and he had no choice but to return to Brisbane.

“During my last year in Atherton, I did 428 operations requiring anaesthesia, and 213 confinements. Patients would often wait from early morning until late night to see me,” he said.

“I was in fact hounded out of town because, while I was there, I could get no peace.

“It wasn’t possible to delegate enough work to permit relaxation, so in 1926, I decided to move to Brisbane.”

Author Geoff Grundy, who has now since retired and lives in the small town of Little Mountain near Caloundra, said he felt both men’s stories were worth telling.

“I read both their biographies a long time ago and at the time I did nothing about it but only recently did I feel that their stories needed to be told,” he said.

“I think people, particularly young people, need to know under what conditions they worked back then and how, as time went by, and the number of specialists grew the attraction for doctors to move to the country fell off.”

Mr Grundy has done a print run of 400 copies of the book.

Record breaking cane harvest

By Ryan Groube Well-performing new varieties, improved irrigation practices and ideal weather conditions have contributed to a record breaking cane harvest on the Tableland.

MSF’s Tableland Mill at Arriga crushed 850, 479 tonnes of cane during the 29-week season smashing the 2012 record by more than 100,000 tonnes (745, 356).

The quality of the cane was also strong with the average CCS (Commercial Cane Sugar) – a measure of the amount of recoverable sugar in the cane.

CCS came in at 14.02, well above the mill average of 13.5 but short of the 2011 record of 14.5.

Productivity also hit record highs with farmers, on average, bringing in 108 tonnes of cane per hectare (tph), up from 104tph in 2012 and 91tph in 2011.

Tableland Canegrowers manager Bronwyn Dwyer said the strong season had been tempered by the late finish and softening prices for sugar.

“Getting a pretty good CCS and a record crop is the good news but the flipside is that the price [for sugar] is down due to a world market surplus,” she said.

The oversupply of sugar has seen the price collapse from about 24 cents (US) a pound in mid-2012 to 16 cents a pound.

Mrs Dwyer said the record 29-week crush, which began on June 5 and finished on December 22, would hinder farmers’ ability to grow cane on paddocks that was cut late in the season.

“The late finish will impact them [our growers],” Mrs Dwyer said. “Any of that late-cut crop if it wasn’t a plough-out [paddock] before than it will just about be now.”

The record crop, combined with about 650

hours of lost time – a combination of scheduled and unscheduled mill stops – has also seen about 17,000 tonnes of cane left uncut.

All of the stranded cane belongs to miller MSF. Tableland Mill general manager Phil Miskin said MSF had prioritised getting local growers’ cane off before their own.

“The weather beat us in the end but we went to great pains to ensure all our other growers’ cane was taken off,” he said.

Despite the cane remaining, Mr Miskin said the 2013 season had exceeded MSF’s expectations and also marked a milestone with the Tableland Mill producing its own sugar from about midway through the crush.

“To have 850, 000 tonnes come through the mill is well and truly a good result and one that we are really happy with,” he said.

“I would like to thank everyone for their efforts, from the growers to the harvesters, for

getting this huge crop off.”

Tableland cane farmer Jason Salvetti, who has about 300 hectares of cane across a farm at Arriga and at Dimbulah, attributed the success of new cane varieties and extensive irrigation to the bumper crop. I put it down to the new varieties Q208 and KQ228. Both are yielding well over 100 tonnes per hectare,” he said.

Mr Salvetti said older varieties of cane that had been prevalent on the Tableland 10 years ago had steadily been falling out of favour due to lower yields.

Varieties such as the Q200 “that everyone had about 10 years ago” yielded about 90 tonnes per hectare this year while the Q120 yielded 85tph and the Q172 variety 106tph. The new varieties recorded tph yields in the high 120s to low 130s.

Mr Salvetti said despite the softening price of sugar the record yield ensured that 2013 would be remembered as an excellent year.

Awards deadline extended NORTHERN AUTO E LECTRICAL

The Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) has extended the deadline for Australia Day Awards in the hope a late surge of nominations will prevent the event from turning into a fizzer.

Council is seeking nominations across 11 categories but at close of business on January 9 – the day before the original deadline – 13 nominations had been received. Despite the poor numbers, council is confident the extended deadline of January 16 will see the number of nominations “increase exponentially” this week.

MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore has issued an urgent call for nominations, saying it would be a shame if the first major event of the new council was not well supported.

Mr Gilmore said there were huge numbers of “extraordinary” people across the shire whose selfless service to the community deserved recognition.

“With a new year and a fresh start for the Mareeba Shire, now is the time to acknowledge the people within our community who make a significant contribution or achievement,” he said. “It is amazing to me that people are so slow to nominate people within our community who do amazing and extraordinary things. For people to sit on their hands and think nominating these people is too hard would be a great shame.”

The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has also extended the deadline for its Australia Day Awards nominations until January 15.

“These annual awards are a way to recognise those whose contributions have been truly exceptional,” TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said.

Firearms Seized in Mareeba

By Boyd Robertson Mareeba police have seized a large quantity of firearms and explosives from two Mareeba properties as part of an ongoing investigation.

On December 22, Police attended a rural property in the Mareeba area in relation to a disturbance.

Police inquiries resulted in a searching of the residence at the property and another rural dwelling. From the two addresses police allegedly recovered 15 rifles, 5 hand guns and a quantity of ammunition and gun powder.

A 41-year-old Mareeba male was charged with unlawful possession of ten or more weapons, receiving tainted property, unlawful possession of explosives, storing ex-

plosives without authority and failing to store propellant powder in a secured area. He is scheduled to appear at the Mareeba Magistrates Court on January 20.

An 18-year-old Mareeba woman was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of explosives and receiving tainted property. She is scheduled to appear at the Mareeba Magistrates Court on February 3.

Further details on the seizure are scarce but The Express understands that it forms part of an over-arching investigation and more police actions are to follow soon.

A huge colony of flying foxes roosting at Herberton has ticked off local residents but bat experts and the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) are saying everyone will have to tolerate the critters until they move on.

The swarm of Little Red Flying Foxes, began to set up camp in trees along River Terrace in November 2013.

It is now believed to contain hundreds of thousands of individual flying foxes.

Resident Neville Johnson said the animals most likely relocated to the area after being moved on by the TRC from other parts of the Tableland in late 2013, and are damaging trees worse than Cyclone Yasi in addition to creating huge amounts of noise and foul smells.

“The smell simply makes your eyes water and burns in your throat,” he said.

“They’re breaking branches three or four inches thick - there was no damage like that when Yasi came through, not even close.”

“When they all take off, the sky goes black – that’s how many of them there are.”

Mr Neville said attempting to scare away the flying foxes, which has been the TRC’s response to complaints about the critters so far, would simply move the problem elsewhere.

Instead he argues a large-scale cull would reduce the flying foxes’ population enough to solve the smell, noise

and vegetation damage problems.

“In my experience shooting them simply means they die on the branch and begin to decompose, which doesn’t save anything,” he said.

“We’ve got to figure out how to deal with them humanely.

“One thing you could do would be string up big nets, catch large numbers of them, put them in a big tank and gas them, then burn the bodies afterward.”

Director of the Tolga Bat Hospital Jenny McLean said complaints about the flying foxes were pointless considering the animals’ role in pollination.

“There’s not a lot of smell from that colony and not even a lot of noise,” Ms McLean said.

“If someone throws a stick at them they will fly around, of course, but mainly they will stay still and rest if not disturbed.

“What those bats are doing is pollinating the flowering trees in the area, which is absolutely vital for these trees to reproduce.”

TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said council wouldn’t be entertaining any ideas of moving on or culling the bats.

“Dispersal activities are both expensive to ratepayers and time-consuming,” Cr Lee Long said. “Expert advice to council says that this species is highly nomadic and is expected to move on within the next few months.

“State government regulations control how councils can respond to situations like this – local government powers do not extend to culling.”

Hunt for Council CEO underway in Mareeba

Decline of the dairy industry

By Boyd Robertson The soon-approaching anniversary of the introduction of $1-per-litre milk by Coles has put the plight of Tableland dairy farmers back in the spotlight.

Changing conditions – chiefly the deregulation of the milk industry in 2000 and the introduction of $1-per-litre milk in the price wars between the two major supermarkets – are slowly but surely draining the life from the southern Tableland’s biggest industry.

Dennis Byrnes’s family has raised dairy cows on the fertile hills of Yungaburra for 50 years, yet in the last decade he has seen the number of fellow dairy farmers on the Tableland drop from more than 200 to about 45.

He’s not sure that many will be left at all unless higher prices can be achieved for farmers’ milk.

“Before the year 2000 we were getting about 50 cents a litre for milk we produced here,” Mr Byrnes said.

“These days we’re getting about 47 cents a litre - that doesn’t sound like much but what you have to remember is that our input costs for things like feed, fertilizer, electricity and wages have pretty much doubled since then.”

Before 2000, there was extensive regulation on the farmgate price and distribution of milk by the state governments, who also heavily assisted the industry.

The Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC) lobbied the Howard Government for deregulation in 1999, resulting in the implementation of the Dairy Structural Adjustment Program (DSAP).

The DSAP removed previous the previous production quotas and premiums, sending the farmgate price of table milk plummeting.

Within four years of deregulation, an estimated 2,500 dairy farmers had left the industry.

When Coles Supermarkets began selling its own branded milk for $1 per litre on Australia Day 2012, it further damaged the already struggling Queensland dairy industry’s chances for recovery.

“Dollar-a-litre milk will be the death of the dairy industry in Queensland, and probably in New South Wales too,” Mr Byrnes said.

“We had 80 farmers leave the industry in 2013 and maybe five or six young farmers coming into the industry.

“It’s got to the point where nobody can do any capital work, nobody can expand – everyone is just in survival mode.”

Coles Merchandise Director John Durkan defended the selling of $1 per litre milk.

“Our customers want fresh Australian milk for their families and they want to know that the price will remain affordable in the future,” he said.

“Our job is to provide a quality product at a competitive price and at the same time ensure that the dairy industry supplying Coles is strong, innovative and customer focused.

“Cole’s cooperative supply arrangement for Coles Brand milk offer dairy farmers greater price transparency.”

Mr Byrnes said the only thing that will save the diary industry will be finding a viable export market in Asia or individual farmers trying to process and distribute their own milk.

Mr Byrnes says it would be a great same to see the dairy industry pass from the southern Tableland.

“We live in the perfect area for dairying up here – we’ve got the fertile soil and the rainfall, we’ve got everything needed, except the price for milk.”

The Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) has completed the interview process in the hunt for a full-time chief executive officer.

Council received 43 applications for the position, whittling the candidates down to a short list of three.

The three short-listed candidates were interviewed by a panel consisting of Mayor Tom Gilmore, acting chief executive Rod Ferguson and deputy mayor Jenny Jensen on January 8.

All councillors were present during the interview process.

“We interviewed three very high quality candidates and we hope to have a new CEO appointed in a timely manner,” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore told The Express.

Acting chief executive Rod Ferguson said council had been “very impressed

with the quality of the applicants”.

Council is expected to make a formal offer for the position shortly but it

remains unclear when the new chief executive will begin work. The applications for the position came from across Australia.

Stock Horse Anniversary

Cape York and Tablelands Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society celebrates its 40th birthday this year.

The branch was formed in 1973 at a meeting of interested horsemen and women at King and Lorraine Ellis’s property at Emerald End, near Mareeba. The first classification of stock horses took place in July, 1974.

The branch was originally know as the Far North Queensland branch but underwent a name change in 1989 to recognise its members from Cape York.

Today the branch holds an annual youth camp, campdrafts and a stock horse challenge at Kerribee Park, Mareeba.

A weekend of activities is planned from 1-4 May at Kerribee Park to celebrate the group’s milestone.

Founding member Colleen Taylor is putting together a history of the branch and is looking to record memories from past and present members.

“The branch has been immensely popular with horse men and women over the years who ride Australian Stock Horses in various disciplines including campdraft, hack, showjumping and pony club,” Mrs Taylor said.

“I’m interested in hearing from those who have been associated with the branch, as a stockhorse breeder, competitor or supporter.

“I am looking for details of members and studs, histories on registered stock horses, achievements in various disciplines and also copies of any old photos or newspaper clippings.”

Mrs Taylor hopes to launch the book during the weekend of celebrations which will include a meet and greet dinner dance, full campdraft program and a presentation parade of founding members.

Further details about the celebrations will be made available closer to the date.

Agricultural hub proposed Queenslanders can have their say on the draft terms of reference for the environmental impact statement of a proposed new agricultural hub in North Queensland.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney welcomed the release by the Coordinator General of the draft terms of reference, saying it was the first step in a rigorous environmental assessment process for the potential Etheridge Integrated Agricultural Project.

“I encourage interested parties to comment during this process which will examine the potential environmental, economic and social impacts and opportunities of a proposed agricultural hub west of Georgetown,” Mr Seeney said.

“The environmental impact state-

ment process should not be construed as the green light for the project to proceed – it is just the first step in what will be a lengthy and rigorous assessment of the proposed project.

“The proposal includes 240,000 hectares of grazing land, 65,000 hectares of cropping land, 18,000 hectares for water storage, and 2,000 hectares of infrastructure.

“It is proposed the enterprise will produce sugar and guar beans for Asian markets. Longer term plans include a potential sugar mill, meat processing plant, aquaculture operation and alternative energy facilities.”

Mr Seeney said members of the community can comment on the environmental impact statement’s draft terms of reference until Monday 10 February 2014. The Coordinator General will then thoroughly review the terms of reference and release the final version for the proponent to address in its environmental impact statement.

The proposed integrated agricultural project was declared a coordinated project on 23 December 2013.

Minister for Energy and Water Supply Mark McArdle said residents in the Aspley area had received calls from scammers claiming to be from the Queensland Government’s ‘renewable energy team’.

The scammers lure people with the offer of a $2,000 solar rebate and request the homeowner’s bank details.

“This is a scam. The Queensland Government makes no direct payments to residents under the solar rebate scheme,” Mr McArdle said.

“The best way to beat the scammers is for people to not be drawn into a conversation and immediately hang up if they receive a phone call like this.

“They should also report the call to the Office of Fair Trading on its hotline number – 13 74 68.

“The old adage that if something looks too good to be true, it probably is, certainly applies in this case.

“Payments would only be made to a consumer by an electricity retailer – not the Government – if electricity is generated above and beyond a household’s electricity use.

“Never give your bank details to anyone you don´t know and trust.”

Six community groups in Far North Queensland have received a $500 donation thanks to a special Bendigo Bank Christmas campaign.

The campaign rewarded six lucky shoppers who each received a $500 bank account as well as being able to make a $500 donation to a community group of their choice.

Bendigo Bank Regional Manager Tony Jensen said the aim of the competition was to show the connection between buying local and supporting the local community.

“We wanted to encourage shoppers across six different communities – Ravenshoe, Malanda, Mareeba, Dimbulah, Kuranda and Atherton – to buy local this Christmas and watch how their community benefits,” Mr Jensen said.

“Not only does buying local have an enormous economic flow on effect in their town, but by filling in a simple form while they shopped, shoppers were also eligible to go into the $500 prize draw.”

More than 60 local businesses took part in the campaign and over 2500 entries were submitted over the four weeks of the campaign.

Who should pay for $1.3m TRC office?

By Ryan Groube Local Government Minister David Crisafulli has confirmed he has been asked to make a final ruling on who pays for the Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) new offices in Atherton.

The de-amalgamation transfer committee – TRC chief executive Ian Church and acting Mareeba Shire Council chief executive Rod Ferguson – have been at loggerheads about who should foot the bill for the $1.3 million offices in Mabel Street.

In November, 2013, the TRC finalised the purchase of office space at 51 Mabel Street citing a need for additional space for staff as a result of the de-amalgamation.

The TRC are arguing that because the extra space was required as a result of the split of councils, Mareeba Shire ratepayers should be called upon to pay a share of the cost. Mr Ferguson has repeatedly said he doesn’t view the purchase as a de-

amalgamation expense.

The impasse has seen the matter elevated to the Minister who said he will make a decision on the matter shortly.

“I want to assure people that a decision will be made soon that is fair and reasonable,” Mr Crisafulli said.

Mr Crisafulli said throughout the deamalgamation process for the TRC, the purchase of the building had been the only matter he had been asked to rule on.

“The fact that this is the only matter not able to be resolved during the entire transfer process is a testament to the respect and goodwill shown by both the Tablelands Regional Council and the Mareeba transfer team,” he said.

Mr Crisafulli’s decision will be final and there will be no right to appeal.

The Express understands that it is unlikely MSC ratepayers will be asked to pay the entire $1.3 million but may be asked to contribute a portion of the price.

The Mabel Street offices are already been used by TRC staff.

Beware of fires caused by lightning Keith Howe witnessed the start of a lightning-struck fire on a neighbour’s property during a thunderstorm on January 4 and snapped the blaze on his phone camera (inset) Mareeba firefighters are warning residents to be mindful of fires started by lightning strikes after extinguishing two blazes sparked during a recent thunderstorm.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) were called out from the Mareeba station to a fire in bushland near Carmen Road and then to a blaze on a rural property on Ray Road on the afternoon of January 4. The Carmen Road fire destroyed about 20 acres of bushland but was contained with backburning and petered out, while the Ray Road fire was extinguished using

water supplies in the QFES attack vehicles.

Both fires were started by lightning strike.

The beginning of the Ray Road fire was witnessed by neighbouring property owner Keith Howe, who heard the lightning strike and saw the initial blaze begin about 200 metres from the properties’ diving fence line.

“We were sitting on the back porch watching the storm and heard a very close strike – it was incredibly loud,” Mr Howe said. “Then we looked over and saw the flames starting up - we were worried it might reach some trees that lead to our

property but the firies got there pretty quickly and dealt with it.

“We were lucky but it was still a good bit of excitement for a few minutes.”

Acting Station Officer Darryl Chaplain led the response to both fires and said it was important for landowners to be wary of lightning fires.

“There was actually little rain during the thunderstorm and the lightning strikes were coming down off the edge of its front,” he said. “The high heat and the low humidity combined with the fuel available to the fire on the ground meant it got

underway immediately once the strike happened.

“It’s landowner responsibility to maintain firebreaks and have adequate firefighting equipment on a farm or property like a water tank and pump – if this weather continues there is every possibility that we will see more fires of this type.”

The continued hot dry weather means QFES’s Operation Xavier, which designates a period of high fire risk, has been extended to the end of January after its end-date was already pushed from the end of November to the end of December 2013.

Mexican Chicken Ingredients 1 large onion 2 tablespoons butter 1 1/4 cups chicken broth 1 cup salsa 1 cup uncooked long grain rice 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 4 chicken breast 1 cup shredded cheese

Bulls are back

By MUFC president Alex Srhoj The Mareeba Bulls will be kicking of preparations for 2014 next week with the club confidant the Bulls can go one better with bring home some silverware.

In 2013 the Bulls were dubbed as bridemaids for the season, finishing second in the Mazda Cup, second in the cup and second in the premiership, always part of the big show but never the bride, but with majority of last season’s squad returning plus a couple of new recruits

the orange and black a poised for another strong showing for the 2014 season.

Premier coach Alex Srhoj has returned for his second season in charge and Marcello Savaglio has returned as head of the Bulls reserve grade squad, the Bulls coaching ranks have also been bolstered by the arrival of John Salogni who has moved from Emerald to Mareeba and brings with him a strong development background.

The Bulls will be looking to kick of training next Tuesday, January 21, with new and old players welcome from 7pm, at Borzi Park.

Six-a-side finals kick off The Mareeba united football club’s 2013 summer six a side competition has reached its climax, with the semi finals being held tonight, Wednesday January 15, and the grand finals taking place on Friday night, January 17, at Borzi Park.

Four grades, eight teams and up to 70 players will fight it out for honours, with some quality fast paced football on show across the mens A and B Grade and ladies A and B Grade.

In the mens A-Grade, Los Torros lead by Madrid trio Victor, Julian and Adrian will face off against Friggers which include premiers players Ben Fresta and Robert Pendenza along with the two English imports Elliot Gardner and Dominic Patterson, in the other semi final

the experienced Road Runners outfit will take on the Chewko Warriors which include Heat premier player Josh Pin, plus Bulls players John Ghensi and Adam Armanti, both matches should not disappoint with quality all over the pitch.

In the ladies division Common Reds finished on top lead by Bulls star Jamica Papa and Daniella Falcomer, but will be tested by the fourth placed Ghensi team, in the ladies second semi, it is a reply of last years final, as Snatch host the Intimidators, Snatch should have the edge with Bulls players Samantha Cater, Stephenie Vedelago and Amanda Torrissi, but Intimidators have the experience having been in the finals now for three years running.

A lifetime of experience in one month

By Ryan Groube In one month, 12-year-old Chris Adams has learned more about cricket than the rest of his years combined.

At the weekend, Adams returned to Mareeba for the first time since December 13 when he embarked on representative cricket duties.

First up was the Cricket Far North four-day Under 13s club championships, followed by a week long training camp in Brisbane for the national schoolboys championships in Melbourne held in early 2014.

Adams stayed in Brisbane over Christmas for the camp, where he trained with his Queensland team mates, before travelling to Melbourne for the championships in Bendigo.

The round robin competition pits the best Under 12s players from each state and territory of Australia against each other over seven days of competition.

Promoted to the unfamiliar position of opener, Adams struggled early before finding form towards the back end of the tournament when he shifted to his preferred first drop position.

“It has been a long and hard time but it has also been a lot of fun and I have met a lot of new people and I have learned a lot – especially at the Queensland training camp,” he said.

“I didn’t start real good but I was happy with the end of my tournament.

“The other bowlers are so big and so fast. Some of them had moustaches – they were like men. I was thinking ‘there is no way that he is 12 he has to be 17’.”

Adams father Bomber said he couldn’t have been prouder of his young fella – the only far northerner to make the Queensland team.

Bomber also said the Queensland team played well and only a couple of nail-biting losses prevented them from finishing higher than fourth.

“We got very close against the Vics [Victoria] who only got past our score in the last over and Chris played well for 27,” Bomber said.

“The New South Wales game was also really close. We needed three runs off the last ball to win and we could only manage a single.

“It was a very good tournament and with a little bit of luck the Queensland team could have finished higher but that’s cricket.”

Bomber said he had no doubt that his son would come out of the tournament a better player as a result of the experience.

Thanks for the successful third basketball season

The return of a competitive and organised basketball competition in Mareeba is completed with the third season of Mareeba Basketball wrapping up late last year.

Following strong push from the Mareeba community to renew this Olympic sport, a small but dedicated band of local volunteers has resurrected the sport over the past couple of years.

With the support of Mareeba State High School, three nights a week during most of the year, many youngsters, and those not so young, have enjoyed spirited competition.

With a strong following from Under 10s up to Under 18s, mixed competitions have been played with all participants learning new skills and enjoying the camaraderie of a team sport.

Separate senior men’s and women’s competitions have seen old players renewing their skills, and the

younger generation of adults have learnt new skills.

But Mareeba Basketball has also run a number of workshops which we held at St Stephen’s Catholic College and St Thomas’s Primary School during 2013, assisting players and supporters in relation to coaching skills and refereeing skills.

A big thanks to the schools for the use of the schools courts. A program of training and utilising junior referees has increased skill levels and will lead to the continued growth of basketball in Mareeba.

Current discussions are being held to renew old sporting rivalries on the basketball court with various Far North Queensland Associations, and a regular series of inter-town games is on the cards for 2014 and beyond.

Of course, Mareeba Basketball could not have grown without the support and assistance of many persons and organisations. Our Club would like to thank all our junior uniform sponsors.

Close win to start off season for Bandits From Page 1

By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Bandits have started the 2014 season with a narrow victory against the Mulgrave Toads at Kerribee Park on Sunday, topping their opponents by five runs at the end of the one-day game.

Losing the toss, the Bandits were sent in to bat first, achieving 135 runs for seven wickets despite being rained out of their final over.

When the Toads took to the bat the Bandits only just managed to bowl them out at 130 runs with one over left.

Bandits player Robert Wallace distinguished himself at both bat and bowl, scoring 26 runs and taking two wickets for 19 off six overs.

Other standouts included Rob Taylor who bowled three wickets for 17 runs off six overs and Brett ‘Stretch’ Brewer, who was the top batsman on 38 runs.

Bandits member Danny Shaw said the game had been ‘awesome’ and a very satisfying start to the season.

“It’s always great to have a good close game like that, we all love it,” he said.

“It was a very exciting game and challenging – everyone dug in and put in a great effort so they’ve done well. “ The Bandits will travel to Trinity Beach this weekend to play off against Barron River for another one-day game.

New lights for tennis club

By Boyd Robertson How many tennis club presidents does it take to change a lightbulb?

What about a really, really big light bulb?

Just one, as it turns out, as long as he’s got a sparky to help him out.

Mareeba Tennis Club president Garry Minnis spent a fair deal of time in the last few weeks atop a cherry picker alongside electrician Bradley Owens installing 44 new multi-vapor discharge lamps in a bid to brighten up the club’s ten tennis courts for night games.

The result of a $10,774 grant from the Reef Hotel Casino Community Benefit Fund (RHCCBF), the lights, each of with also comes with a new capacitator, replace old lamps quickly approaching the end of their service lives.

The RHCCBF is administered by the state government and diverts a portion of the tax paid by the Reef Hotel Casino in Cairns into community projects from Cape York to Cardwell.

The lights were switched on for the first time on January 7 and certainly dazzled players, according to Minnis.

“Everyone was quite impressed when we turned them on for the first time,” he said.

“It’s noticeably brighter at night and people can definitely track the ball easier.”

The funds were secured by former RHCCBF representative Allison Geisel, who said the club was a worthy recipient of a little extra

night-time illumination.

“This facility has a lot of people using it – more than 220 – that’s a lot for a club, especially a country tennis club,” Geisel said.

“The RHCCBF has supported plenty of clubs like this one over the years, for example every digital scoreboard for the local footy clubs in the area was paid for by RHCCBF grants.

“It’s provided grants to the Mareeba Bandits, the golf club, Eacham Historical Society, Eacham Show Society and plenty of others.”

The first season of tennis night fixtures will begin on February 5, with the club to hold grading nights this month.

Grading nights will be held on January 15 and January 22, weather permitting.

All new players are urged to come along on one or both night to ensure players and put into an appropriate division.

The grading nights are free and regular players are invited to come along for a hit.

“We have students aged seven and older start training each year, but the adults really enjoy Taekwondo too. The fitness aspects of it along with the technical and the self defence training are excellent for improving confidence,” Mr Dieben said.

Overall, taekwondo improves fitness and flexibility, teaches self defence for real life scenarios, and improves self confidence throughout everyday life.
