Chess champs By Justin Fris ST THOMAS’S Primary School will be sending four of their best chess players to the state interschool chess championships in Brisbane next weekend. For Caleb Shorey, Ryan Paton, Liam Newlands and Nicholas Forgali, the challenge of holding their own against seasoned opposition was too good to pass up. St Thomas’s chess coach Mike Harnischfeger said that the team had ‘trained really hard’ and were upbeat ahead of the championships. “I always tell them to be prepared and take your time,” he said. Despite metro players often having access to elite coaches and tougher competitions, Harnischfeger said the three basic principles of chess never change. “Ideally, you need to control the middle of the board, protect your king and slowly utilise all of your pieces,” he said. When I visited the team in one of their final training sessions, they were keen for the championships to begin. Ryan Paton said he had been playing chess for
Ryan Paton and Nicholas Forgali prepare for next week. a number of years and praised the effort put in by his coach. “Mr H is always teaching us new skills,” he said. “He is really good at teaching.” Teammate Nicholas Forgali said he tried to remain relaxed during each match, no matter who he faced. “I like to get in a good defence and try to control the middle of the board as long as I can,” he said.
But the ability to fly and accommodate the team is naturally costly, which makes the assistance from four local entities that bit more special. The Byrnes Street Medical Centre, Apels and David Anthony solicitors, along with St Thomas’s PNF group have all chipped in financially, allowing the team to participate in an opportunity of a lifetime.
Great attendance rewarded with morning tea By Justin Fris 92 of Mareeba State School’s finest between prep and year seven were rewarded with a hearty morning tea on Friday. These students recorded perfect school attendance for term three, with this number looking to increase in term four. Deputy Principal Hannah Simpson said the school was hopeful of recording a 95 per cent perfect attendance rate by the end of the year. “I’m so excited by the number of kids that enjoy coming to school each day,” she said. “Even more encouraging, is the number of prep children that have been part of the morning tea today.” Gone are the days of serving up fairy bread and chocolate crackles for morning tea, with Mareeba State School students more inclined to eat salad sandwiches or pieces of local fruit. “We offer food rewards for our students, where they receive small treats after finishing their main food,” Ms Simpson said. “These healthy eating habits have been common place, due to our Active After Schools sport sessions through the Australian Sports Commission.” With a passion for learning under their belts, there is little doubt that these targets should be met by this dedicated school community.

“Lock the Gate” protestors outside the Mareeba RSL.
Mt Mulligan station sold was passed in initially at auction. Private negotiations were held after the auction, with Mr Morris purchasing the station for an undisclosed fee. Fears of the land being sold for mining purposes were eventually dispersed, much to the delight of those concerned for its future. But some of these concerns appeared to be somewhat premature, according to Member for Cook David Kempton. “Let’s look at the facts,” Mr Kempton said. “There is no current coal seam gas exploration permit at Mt Mulligan, proposed fracking or risk to the environment.” “If it ever does eventuate that coal seam
By Justin Fris The scores of protestors who attended the Mareeba RSL on Wednesday, October 8, to vent their anger over the sale of Mt Mulligan Station at auction turned out to be a fizzer and consequently a complete waste of time. “Lock the Gate’ proponents and supporters presumed the property would be sold to a mining company but instead was purchased by a local business man, Mr Chris Morris, who intends to transform Mt Mulligan Station into an outback resort. A reserve price of $1.6 million was set and
gas comes to our region, I will be looking very closely at the environmental consequences and the cultural implications.” With Mt Mulligan (Ngaddabooldan) land sacred to the Djungan people, it was only fitting that a resounding throng of people gathered to voice their opinions before the auction. Amongst the crowd was KAP leader Bob Katter, whose passion for the cause raised the atmosphere single handily. “What little rights a landholder in this town had held have been stripped away by the LNP government,” he said. Mr Katter’s hearty plea was echoed by members of the CSG Free North Qld group,

along with other concerned onlookers. Members of the Djungan community said they had been working with the Indigenous Land Council on Native title options, which could have given them the first option of securing a lease for the land. Traditional Owner of Nyaddaboolgan, Percy Neal, said “The Djungan community were devastated that negotiations ultimately proved unsuccessful. The Djungan people are bitterly disappointed by the callous nature that the Indigenous Land Council has shown the Djungan people in relationship to them being able to purchase the lease hold on their land,” he said.

Hundreds flood to Burketown The Gulf of Carpentaria is home to one of the world’s most extraordinary phenomena, the Morning Glory Cloud. These clouds are so rare most people will never see one in their life. There is only one spot on Earth where the cloud can be predicted and observed on a regular basis from late September to early November and that’s in the town of Burketown, 30km inland from the Gulf. To celebrate the incredible natural occurrence, the inaugural Morning Glory Festival was held from 25 to 28 September, 2014 in Burketown. The festival combined a program of events including a camp draft, rodeo, cultural workshops and Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation’s (CLCAC) 30 year anniversary celebrations. Burke Shire Council Mayor Cr. Ernie Camp said “The first Morning Glory Festival has been and gone….and we not only survived but made some great memories and enjoyed some excellent entertainment over the four days.” “On behalf of Council, I would like to thank all those who attended and showed their support of the various events. The happy atmosphere meant attendees – whether young or old, local or visiting, family or individual – were able to enjoy all that was on offer and have a positive experience of Burke Shire.” said Cr Camp The Morning Glory Festival was a joint partnership of the Burke Shire Council, the Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Council and the Burketown Rodeo & Sporting Association with support from Tourism and Events Queensland and the Australian Government’s Festivals Australia.

By Justin Fris A NEW independent challenger for the state electorate of Cook has a unique view for the future of the region. Lee Marriott, 27, (pictured) is a hardworking diesel fitter who has given his life toward bettering the land in the far north. Ahead of the state election next March, Mr Marriott has spent several hours canvassing the electorate; with several key trends emerging. “I have had discussions with business people and workers in Cooktown, Mossman, Julatten, Mareeba and Weipa and find they have a lot of dissatisfaction with the two party system of government,” he said. “I have been told a younger view of every day life is long overdue.” On the back of a solid education and time in the mining industry, Mr Marriott has also dedicated a lot of time to the cattle industry, which remains a passion of his to this day. And as the months draw closer toward the election, Mr Marriott’s firm desire to represent the Cook electorate with distinction should ultimately turn heads as the race heats up.

FNQ country music festival rocks Mareeba
The large crowd watches on as overall junior champion Tyson Lucas was awarded his trophy (pictured with his black hat). Tyson is also pictured with Kate Wilcox and Kiara Cabassi. By Justin Fris
OVER three fun-filled days, Mareeba accommodated some of the brightest country music talents in the region. From early on Friday afternoon, buskers cut an impressive figure along downtown Mareeba, giving local workers a cheery beginning to their weekend. There were plenty of laughs and grins galore later in the night, with the ‘Open Mic’ concert serving up some unforgettable (and perhaps forgettable for some) acts. For those more poetry inclined, there was a
solid assortment of bush poetry on offer, which as always was warmly received by the audience. The “Saturday Night Supa Show” concert was very much an age affair, with artists from both ends of the spectrum working together to provide a quality listening experience for all the devotees who had kicked on through the day. But the feature of the festival was always going to be Sunday afternoon, with the cream of the talent quest rising to the top. A competition which began with 18 categories was always going to ensure a tough time for the judges, who eventually selected 12 contestants
for the nitty gritty of the competition. After a stellar weekend of performing, Phoebe Foster-Griffith was crowned ‘Overall Juvenile Champion’ of the talent quest, after also performing in the ‘Supa Show’ on Saturday night. Tyson Lucas wowed the crowd from his opening note, which ensured he took home the ‘Overall Junior Champion’, along with a prestigious country music scholarship. Lucas, who was humbled by the occasion, looks set for a bright future in the industry. In the open division, things were notably tighter, with several major contenders ca-

Raising awareness of mental health By Justin Fris REGIONAL communities across Australia are in the spotlight this year during mental health week. In a recent survey compiled by South Australian Greens senator Penny Wright, 290 regional mental health workers (15 from QLD) overwhelmingly voiced disapproval at the current state of mental health management in Australia. Senator Wright, who is also the Greens’ spokesperson for mental health, called for the Abbott government to make improvements to mental health services in regional Australia. Mental Health Week (which runs October 9-16) also gives Australians an opportunity to reflect on an ever changing society. CEO of Mental Health Association QLD Dr Dennis Young said at any one time, 1 in every 5 Australians aged between 16 and 85 can be battling a mental illness condition. Dr Young also said it was important to reduce the level of
stigma during this important week. “Mental Health Week is also about education and it’s a personal responsibility to be wary of the words and labels we sometimes use that can be extremely harmful to someone and can impact on their recovery,” he said. Royal Flying Doctor Service social worker Taeha Condon said those battling mental illness in rural and remote areas had several extra hurdles to jump over. “It can be difficult at times to access certain services as distance is often an issue,” Ms Condon said. “We encourage anyone who may need assistance to seek out support and look out for your mates.” The survey also outlined the sheer difficulty in attracting mental health support workers to remote and rural areas. Contrary to this, Ms Condon said there were several benefits for those who took on positions in the bush. “You really get to build a sense of community and help others improve their social interactions,” she said.
The team at Travel Experience.com got behind Hat Day on Friday October 10, to raise funds and awareness for mental health.
Royal Flying Doctor Service is spreading its wings By Justin Fris THE ROYAL Flying Doctor Service will provide extra mental health services in the Etheridge and Croydon Shires, in an attempt to raise awareness of suicide. Coupled with the “Community Care Drought Assistance Program”, locals will be able
to access one-on one counselling sessions and several exciting community-based events. RFDS social worker Taeha Condon said the importance of mental health awareness in rural communities should never be underestimated. “The objective of the program is providing mental health services in drought-affected com-
munities, where help may not always be readily available,” she said. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians under the age of 45. Condon believes talking can provide a solid foundation for anyone overcoming the complex challenges of mental health. “Seek help early and talk to someone,”
Condon said. “Avoid being alone and write down your feelings, as this will help you understand your emotional triggers.” If you or someone you know is facing a mental health battle and requires support, please contact Taeha Condon (RFDS- social worker) on 0407 477 128 or Beyondblue on 1300 224 636.

Charter Member of 56 years, Mick Borzi was recently presented with a beautiful plaque in honour of the Ambassador of Goodwill award presented to him last year personally by International President, Australian Barry Palmer. The award is the highest that a Lion may be awarded. Pictured above is past Cabinet Secretary Graeme Ford presenting Mick Borzi with the award. Mareeba Lions were busy at the Mareeba State Primary School and St Thomas’s recently as prep children were given free eye screening by local optometrists John Holm and Andrew Howell. John and Andrew had volunteered their time in support of Lions International World Sight Day. Lions also presented the schools with an array of audio books to assist vision impaired children with their reading. World Sight Day co-ordinator Lion Tom Braes said everyone was urged to; “Be Wise and Save your Eyes”, and to “Get tested”. Although the children screened generally had good eye sight some were found to have issues that require follow up. Lions all agree that if the sight of one child can be corrected than it has been a worthwhile project. Mrs Lisa Grimmett has been inducted into Lions International at a presentation ceremony held on the 17th September. Mareeba Charter member Mick Borzi presented Lisa
with her membership certificate and Lions pin. Membership Chairman Gilber Teitzel said he was sure Lisa would be the first of many women who would join the Mareeba Lions club. Lions Christmas cakes are now available so get in and buy yours while they last. The large cakes are now $16.00 and the smaller cakes are $12.00. The Lions monster Christmas raffle has been launched with tickets now available from all Lions and Lioness members. Remember the more you buy the more chances you have of winning one of the fabulous prizes. Clubs and associations which wish to sell Lions raffle tickets as a fund raiser should contact any Lion to discuss. This is an ideal way for other clubs to make a large profit without having to organise the raffle. A generous commission is paid to Clubs which wish to participate in this imitative. Thinking of joining a service club. Give Lions two hands and become part of the largest humanitarian organisation in the world. Phone the membership director Gilbert today. F.I.F.O. workers should consider LIONS as a way to maintain social contact with their peers. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion. Dive into the world wide web By Justin Fris THE TABLELANDS community is set to dive into the online digital world, with the upcoming ‘Dive into Digital’ website training session on October 22, at the Mareeba Theatre Hall. Conducted between 5.30-7.30pm, local businesses and community organisations will be given expert guidance on not only creating an efficient website, but also maintaining and navigating them successfully. Although funded through the Australian government’s Digital Enterprise Program (DEP), it should be noted the session has received excellent profile and support from Mareeba’s Chamber of Commerce, Mareeba Shire Council, Mareeba and District Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association along with Bendigo Bank’s community branches in Dimbulah and Mareeba. DID Project Manager Michele Dale said the focus of the session would allow all users to learn new skills. “This is a great opportunity for all sorts of organisations to learn how to promote their products, services or causes, including small businesses and community organisations, as well as agricultural enterprises who might want a farm website,” Ms Dale said. After the session has been completed, users will also be given an opportunity to receive additional mentoring at their own organisation. If you are interested in attending visit www.diveintodigital.com.au.
History made in Dimbulah HISTORY was made in Dimbulah last week when Mareeba Rotary President Natasha Srhoj, officially inducted the first two members of the newly formed Dimbulah Rotary Satellite Club. Dimbulah State School teachers Jamie Smith and Ines Cagnola were inducted at a special ceremony at the school in front of students, teachers and guests. The Dimbulah Rotary Satellite Club, an extension of the Mareeba Rotary Club, will meet monthly at Dimbulah State School. One of their first projects will be to work with youth at the school and in the area, to charter a Rotary Interact Club for junior Rotarians looking to make a difference locally and around the world. The students have already hit the ground running and aim to organise care packages to either Laos or Cambodia in time for Christmas. In 2011 Rotary International launched the
Satellite Club initiative in response to feedback that younger Rotarians required flexibility in their Rotary club membership. Satellite clubs allow for more flexibility and a less formal approach to meetings, with a focus on hands-on projects for community groups and its own projects. Mareeba Rotary President Natasha Srhoj said, that by forming a satellite club in Dimbulah, Mareeba Rotary is now able to connect with a town that has close ties with Mareeba and the prospect of an Interact club at the school means the students will be able to make difference wherever they want, plus connect with Mareeba students before their move to Mareeba in year 11. “It is a very exciting time for Mareeba Rotary and even more exciting for Dimbulah. Our our club is looking forward to working with them on some great projects,” Natasha said.

New member Jamie Smith said, “I am very honoured to be an official member of Dimbulah’s Rotary Satellite Club. My students and I cannot wait to embark on our humanitarian project for Dimbulah State school this year. It is wonderful to be given the opportunity, with the unanimous support from the Mareeba Rotary Club, to give back to the community in a positive way.” Rotary 9550 District Governor Moorthy Karuna, encouraged all Rotary clubs to be flexible, embrace change, think outside the box, have fun at club meetings and working bees and to be inclusive, not only with existing members, but also to potential and new members from different age groups, ethnic and financial backgrounds. RFDS garden party fete a hit in Tolga By Justin Fris THEY came to the Atherton Turf Club from near and far; and had a wonderful time. The first annual “Garden Party” fete was successfully coordinated by the Royal Flying Doctor Service Auxiliary’s Near and Far branch. RFDSANF President Denise McGlucken said the support from the tablelands community ensured a wonderful experience for all who attended. “I’d like to make a special mention to both the Atherton Lionesses and the Tolga Lions for their help in supporting the fete,” she said. “The Atherton Turf Club has also been very
supportive in accommodating us.” The melodic tunes of a pipe band soothed their way around the concourse, along with a gentle breeze which tugged people along from stall to stall. Browsing often leads to thirst on a warm day, with a visit to the Devonshire tea stall an absolute non-negotiable for many of the crowd. These attractions were complimented with the usual array of jumping castle for the kids, sausage sizzle, along with a major raffle. As I stopped by the inner concourse, all eyes were locked intently on the goodies up for grabs! And as the sun beamed down on the fete, the only thing brighter is the future of the event within the tablelands community. MAIN PHOTO: All eyes are on the raffle prizes as the preliminary address is read out. LEFT: RFDSANF volunteers like Kaye McDonald & Vicki Brogan are the lifeblood of community events.

ANNUAL
TABLELANDS university students were given a real treat last weekend, with the 10th Annual Joint Rural Health Club’s event rolling into Atherton. For 34 eager university students, it provided an opportunity to learn vital health practices, such as stitching wounds, plastering limbs along with steps required to handle diabetic emergencies.
Health Workforce QLD CEO Chris Mitchell said the event laid an excellent foundation for the students. “We’re keen to support the next generation of rural health workers and teach some important skills at the same time,” Mr Mitchell said. The sessions were overseen by local practitioners, who included Dr Andrew McKenzie, Dr Jess Adams, Dr Grant Manypenny along with Dr Mark Bestmann.

quiet life. But when he meets Teri (Chloe Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of Russian gangsters, he has to help her. McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement, he finds his desire for justice reawakened, using his hidden skills.
STEP UP ALL IN The fable unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least that's the legend residents have always believed. In truth the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and loveable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. Review by Louise Keller: The stop-motion animation is extraordinary. The strength of the film is the astonishing reality created by the filmmakers. The source material comes from Alan Snow's novel Here Be Monsters with the film's villain, Archibald Snatcher (boomingly voiced by Ben Kingsley, a cross between an unappealing Tim Burton character with balloon body and Sacha Baron Cohen in Les Mis), getting the most screen time. The story strand to which youngsters will relate is the one between Eggs and Winnie (voice of Elle Fanning), daughter of the town's aristocratic Lord Portley-Rind (Jared Harris), a colourful character with impressive twirling red moustache and whose tall white hat symbolizes his status as the town of Cheesebridge's Big Cheese.

Miami street dancer Sean Asa (Ryan Guzman) moves to Hollywood with visions of fame and fortune, only to discover the almost insurmountable odds of making it in the professional dance world. But when the new dance crew he forms with the beautiful and headstrong Andie West (Briana Evigan) reaches the final rounds of a high-stakes reality TV competition in glittering Las Vegas, he has a shot at finally making his dreams come true-if he can set aside old loyalties and long-time rivalries and just do what he loves most: dance. Review by Louise Keller: Sensational high energy dancing with inventive choreography and sassy rhythms make this fifth film in the franchise fly, even though the plot is wafer thin and the girl boy dynamic wanting. s paired with Guzman, but there is no spark. The film begins with an LA audition followed by rejection. Dancing might make you feel alive, the voice over tells us, but there is rent to pay and the life of a dancer is far from easy. What happens after a rejection? The action then moves to Vegas, where the team find themselves in the same Caesar’s Palace suite as Michael Douglas and team graced in Last Vegas. Different choreography is played out in different settings. When the dance team (now called LMNTRIX) is not rehearsing or performing, director Trish Sie concentrates on external shots of Vegas: the billboards, the casinos and the lights. Of course there’s a competitive element and it’s LMNTRIX against the Grim Knights, whose creepy leader Jasper (Stephen Jones) has some dirty dealings planned. There’s also angst between Sean and his former team The Mob, who arrive in Vegas to compete too, and a spat between Adam Sevani’s goofy Moose and his g/f played by Alyson Stoner. It all plays out predictably which wouldn’t matter so much if the leads were a bit more interesting. We know that Sean and Andie are going to end up having The Kiss, but like the routines, it is just part of the choreography. The climactic sequence at the end, when everything relies on the dizzying choreography of the final elimination round at Caesar’s Palace, amid flames, sand and confetti, is the best part of the film: the dance routines cook, the music pounds and skimpy costumes play their part. If it’s dancing you want, there’s plenty of it here.

Quadsafe Australia duo Colin Lawson and Darrell Knight (pictured above) are leading the charge locally for ATV operators to be aware of safety when operating quad bikes. Mr Lawson, who is an ATV dealer, racer, trainer and tour operator believes there are a few simple steps to stay safe on any bike. “Complacency is a killer on ATV’s,” he said. “They are very easy to operate even for children and people with no experience or training.” Mr Lawson says in order to ensure quad bike safety, riders should focus on the following areas. “It’s imperative to receive training on the specific bike that you use,” he said.
SUGAR REPORT
Mossman Mill crushed 41,163 tonnes of cane at an average CCS of 14.13 for week 21 of the crushing season. The factory had a 12 hour stop during the week due to repair a leak in one of the boiler tubes and a maintenance day was scheduled to repair critical equipment.

“Every ATV comes with an operator manual, which provides all the information you need.” The two major non-negotiable components of quad biking are wearing a helmet and NEVER double on single seater quads. Mr Lawson believes that if these bases are covered, your overall quad biking experience will be a positive one. “There are many so called ‘city experts‘ debating ATV’s and how to make them safer,” he said. “I firmly believe if people follow these four basic rules, lives will be saved." Mr Lawson will be running a safety workshop for children under 16 in Atherton. Please contact him on 0427 911 835 if you have children operating ATV’s.

The team also includes members of Atherton Rotary who take on numerous tasks that bring the festival together. Sabine Hamilton is overseeing the children's entertainment, Nick Watling has organised all the stage events, Trevor Duncan is the on-site manager and Stewart Grandcourt puts in all the water pipes every year. Connie Duncan and Rhonda Micola are continuing to receive stallholders applications and ensure all insurances and food licences are in order. Geoff Reddington, our 90 year old hero, and his wife Honor, have been seen putting up roadside signs to advertise the event. Jeni Matthew is organising the Cent Sale and there is a roster for set up, knock down, and working on the gates. Jamie Delai has organised her team to supply power to the site, Brian McLaren is welding together the jail to incarcerate our local Federal and State politicians. Terry Barnes will have his truck running collecting hay bales, tables, chairs and marquees. Its a huge event and community support is what makes it happen. What else does Atherton Rotary do? In conjunction with Mareeba Rotary Club they stage the biennial Rotary FNQ Field Days, the largest Field day in Far North Queensland. The event brings together the wider community to exhibit goods which support our work and lifestyles. This event will be held at Kerribee Park at the end of May 2015. Rotary is an International Club so our work reaches out to Cambodia, Nepal, Timor Leste, against Polio Worldwide and now Ebola in Africa. Our signature program for the coming years is the restoration of the Rocky Creek Igloo. This Quonset, or Nissan, hut is all that remains of the World War 2 "Biggest Hospital in the Southern Hemisphere" The only remnant is the building once used for entertainment and large gatherings, such as, the Christmas Eve Church Service. Atherton Rotary has taken on the task of restoring the building undaunted by its dilapidated state, but firmly recognising its significant value in the history of our area. Rotary is always welcoming people of like minds to join with them to further the ideas of Rotary based on the Motto, 'Service Above Self' to continue with a spirit of generosity in building a healthy, cohesive community. We meet weekly at the Atherton International Club on Tuesdays at 6.30pm. Like our Facebook page for more info, email rotary. tastesofthetablelands@gmail.com. websitewww. tastesofthetablelands.com

Local event helps restore Igloo Tastes of the Tablelands is an activity of the Rotary Club of Atherton. In 2014, after all bills are paid and the community organisations who support us receive their funds, the balance will be held for the restoration of the Rocky Creek Igloo. In 2013, Tablelands Regional Council gave the building to the Atherton Rotary Club. This was done so that work could start on restoration of the dilapidated World War 2, Theatre. It is built on the site of the war time hospital at Rocky Creek, just north of Tolga, on the Atherton Tablelands. It is not a project for the faint hearted, time and the elements have taken their toll on the building. The igloo is full of memories and history. It has cap-
tured the attention of the community as a worthy project to remember what happened here during the 1940s, in defending our northern shores from invasion. Stabilisation of the building has begun with a grant from FRRR of $20,000. This money has gone quickly into providing timber trusses in line with National Heritage requirements. Early estimates of the projects costs are well over $300,000, so anything the local community can contribute, is welcome.
The Spirit of Generosity
These businesses, organisations and individuals are contributing to building a cohesive, healthy community and Rotary Atherton congratulates them in putting the community before themselves to bring together Tastes of the Tablelands 2014. They are great people who are recommended to you as the ones who uphold the spirit of generosity in our community. What they do in sponsoring and supporting events in the community is what they believe is the right thing to do for our town, our community and our region. All of you are congratulated for being part of this wonderful event that brings so many different sections of our community together.

Mareeba Basketball Under 12’s team competed in Atherton at the weekend in their new team singlets.
Intertown basketball Basketball focus this weekend switches from the local Mareeba competition, to Round three of the intertown fixtures. Mulgrave will host the Intertown series this coming Saturday, October 18, at the Atherton State High School courts. The venue has been changed from the Mulgrave Centre, to Atherton as the Mulgrave courts became unavailable. Certainly, a most interesting round of the competition, with eight Mareeba Senior and Junior teams, competing against sides from Atherton, Mulgrave and Port Douglas. The Mareeba teams have performed extremely well over the pre-
vious two rounds and are expected to again record their share of victories on Saturday. In particular the Senior Ladies and Under 16/18 Junior Girls who presently top their division, while all the Junior Boys teams can challenge for top positions by recording wins at Atherton. The first Mareeba team in action on Saturday is the Under 12 boys who clash with Mulgrave at 9am, with the young Under 10 Junior side playing against the Atherton youngsters 9.45am. All other Mareeba teams will play Saturday afternoon and Saturday night.

EXPRESS sPORT Gladiators at the crossroads By Justin Fris FORMER AFL legend Allan Jeans once said “In every match, you come to a crossroad. You either stand up or stand down. The choice is up to you.” Jeans who guided Hawthorn to seven grand finals in a row between 1983 and 1990, might as well have been talking about the current fortunes of the Mareeba Gladiators. After 2013 netted a watershed first grade finals appearance and a reserve grade premiership, the Gladiators hit the skids. Big time. The first grade team were competitive early, but a chronic habit of leaking points cost them dearly. Even more heartbreaking was the fortunes of reserve grade, who began the season as premiership defenders and finished with the dreaded wooden spoon! “Across the board we weren’t performing well at all and the season turned out to be extremely disappointing,” outgoing Club President John Arcidiacono said. “We had some visa issues with a couple of our Fiji players, along with several injuries through the middle part of the year.”
If you throw in the withdrawal of the club’s U/18’s midway through the season due to lack of numbers, many could be forgiven for thinking there was no high point at all for the Gladiators during 2014. This couldn’t be further from the truth, with five 18’s players becoming first grade regulars by the end of the season. “Shannon Bailey was a stand out for us this year,” Arcidiacono said. “He’s a strong front rower with tremendous agility.” After spending five years as President, Arcidiacono will step aside and devote more time to his business (Aquafix Pool Shop, on Byrnes Street) and family. “I’m a foundation member of the club and enjoyed being involved on a number of levels,” he said. “We have a solid group of volunteers who give up their time and I want to commend them on all the work they do.” Looking ahead to 2015, Arcidiacono is adamant the Gladiators need to establish a winning culture quickly. “The teams need a complete shift in attitude to achieve this,” Arcidiacono said.
Far north futsal nationally recognised By Justin Fris THE following statement is not a misprint. Ronnie Leporati’s entire FNQ Cairns futsal team (pictured above) has been selected for the Australian Futsal Association’s upcoming tour of Malaysia next year. After romping through the recent national championships, Leporati was delighted when informed of this remarkable outcome. “It is really a job well done for all of the players,” Leporati said.
“It is a real buzz to win the national championship, along with this achievement for all of the boys in the team.” The two week tour in June next year will allow the boys to train intently in a fresh environment, along with matches against quality international opposition. But the boys will be sure to pack their cameras, as sightseeing and fun will definitely be key components of the tour. “These tours are all about making friends with players in other states and enjoying themselves abroad,” Mr Leporati said.
Bandits cruise to win over Mulgrave Roosters lock in new signing By Justin Fris THE Atherton Roosters have scored two major victories of late and it is only one month into the offseason. The first of which, is the key signing of Dean Howard (pictured above centre), a proven winner in Qld country rugby league. Howard, who was won first grade premierships for Innisfail and West Bundaberg during a lengthy career, has also picked up the coveted Cairns District Rugby League player of the year twice. Along with his presence on the field in first grade, Howard will also coach the Roosters 18’s side, which should form a solid player pathway for the club in coming seasons. If this news wasn’t enough, Roosters faithful are also crowing after the club was recently awarded the ‘XXXX Gold’ club of the week.
Endorsed by the QRL, the Roosters picked up a $1000 worth of XXXX Gold Maroons merchandise, after seeing off rival club entries across the state. Club president Darryl Day said “A lot of work had been undertaken to ensure a quality entry was put forward.” Earlier in the season, the Roosters (along with the Cairns Ivanhoes) headed down to Irvinebank and played the first competitive rugby league match in the town since 1884. Volunteers throughout the club made the event happen, from fertilising the field, to erecting the goalposts. This gesture of goodwill (‘Footy in the Bush’) was clearly welcomed by not only the local community, but also the CDRL and QRL. The Roosters now find themselves in the grand final draw, where they could walk away with a $5000 food and beverage package for an end of season function at NQ Hardware stadium.
Atherton product scoops up Broncos award FORMER Atherton Rooster Aaron Rockley took out the Brisbane Broncos National Youth Cup team’s ‘best forward’ award, at a gala dinner on Friday night. Held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition centre in front of all the entire club and distinguished guests, Rockley received his award from coach, Craig Hodges. The season was a success for the Broncos NYC team, despite being narrowly defeated by the NZ Warriors 34-32 on grand final day.

AFTER skittling Mulgrave for 75 in their first innings, the Mareeba Bandits applied the blowtorch to the belly last Sunday. Pocketing first innings points clearly wasn’t enough for the visitors, who wielded the willow with flair during their second innings. In a remarkable 14 over stint, the Bandits scored in excess of 10 runs an over. With momentum at their side and runs in their pocket, the bowlers got a
second opportunity to have some fun. Adam Roy and Lachlan Ford struck fear into the Mulgrave top order, with disciplined pace bowling. Chasing 180 off 30 overs proved a bridge too far for the hosts, who fell well short of the required target. The Bandits would also like to especially thank Andrew Ford and Linda Roy for their assistance in scoring over the weekend. The temperature isn’t the only thing heating up in the coming week, with the Bandits facing their rivals Rovers on Sunday in Mareeba.

Bullseye Mareeba Bulls crowned football kings of the north By Justin Fris
MAREEBA United (Bulls) Football Club confirmed their status as the best club football team in North Queensland, with solid showings across three divisions of the Crad Evans Shield at Brolga Park, Townsville, on Saturday. Both Premier and Reserve division teams were victorious against their Townsville counterparts, while the 2nd division side fell agonisingly short of victory in extra time, courtesy of a late winner from the home side. Premier division coach Alex Srhoj praised all three teams for their efforts, along with the 130 odd supporters who made the lengthy drive down to Townsville. “It’s one for everyone,” he said. “The crowd pulled us through some key moments during the year, so it was really nice we could share the finals with them.” In the Premier division, the Bulls were overall good value for their 1-0 victory over the Warriors, but faced some nervy moments as the match neared full time. “Alex Plowman hastily cleared one off the line and we also had Julian make a stunning save with about a minute left,” Srhoj said. “The referees were a bit lenient, which ensured a more physical game for our boys.” Srhoj was also quick to commend his entire squad, from the first eleven to the substitutes, who all played a major role throughout the season. “We had a few guys put their hand up in the final few minutes who needed a rest,” he said. “The quality of our bench was a testament to the depth we have across the board.” The Reserve division tasted success under Marcello Savaglio, running out 2-1 winners over a spirited Brothers side, who pushed them all the way. Despite tasting a 2-1 defeat in the depths of extra time, the progress of the 2nd division lads under John Salogni has been nothing short of outstanding in 2014. The celebrations will continue this Saturday at the clubs end of season presentation night. The Express would like to congratulate the bulls and wish all involved a safe offseason and hope they keep up the winning form in 2015.
