Irene McDermott (née Tilse) and her brother, Bob Tilse, are looking forward to the family coming together.

Rich family history and memories will be shared next month when the Tilse family reunites. Siblings Irene McDermott (née Tilse) and her brother, Bob Tilse, were eagerly anticipating the reunion, on August 3, which will bring together approximately 100 descendents. The siblings are grandchildren of Monty Tilse, and were looking forward to meeting new kin and catching-up with far-flung relatives. Mrs McDermott had always been interested in her family history and first started researching

her ancestry more than 30 years ago. Since then technology has advanced, allowing Mrs McDermott to discover even more of the Tilse family’s rich history. “All the old photos have come to light that tell stories,” she said. “I’ve gone into Trove (an online search tool) and found all these articles from the Cairns Post dated 1926, all these stories about Tilses and full description of weddings of my aunties.” As well as the reunion at the Heritage Centre, there will be a meet-and-greet held at the Mareeba Leagues Club on Friday, August 1, from 6.30pm.

Rich history of the Tilses comes to life Charles Albert Lewis Tilse went to Charters Towers in the gold rush and married there in 1879. He had five sons and all five lived in Mareeba for some time, arriving in the early 1900s. The sons were Charles, Carl (Monty), Arthur, Alfred and Rupert (Eddie). Carl was known as Monty because he would gamble on anything, and got his nickname from the old song The Day They Broke the Bank in Monte Carlo. Monty had 11 children, Charles had seven and the other brothers had a few each. Some were born here, but even so there was a population explosion when the Tilses hit town. This family provided us with some of Mareeba’s most well-known characters. In business, trading, mining, music or any other area there was a Tilse who could do it. They were involved in tin at Tinaroo, gold at the Minnie Moxham Mine, radio shops, betting shops, garages, cafes, menswear shops, boot shops and were bakers, photographers, tobacco farmers, carpenters and salesmen. Eddie, by reputation, was a lovable bloke with a silver tongue who could have sold blowflies to a butcher and during the depression he sold pianos to every second family in Mareeba. Most were repossessed and we’re not sure if Eddie got his commission, but such was his character that very few were resentful and indeed most had more than a little admiration for his ability. And who could forget Monty’s sons, the second Charles (Chas), Bruce or the second Alf. In the late 1940s Chas ran an Amateur Hour in the old RSL Hall, every Saturday

night. A silver coin was the entry fee for each family and the proceeds went to the ambulance. The place was always packed out. You picked up your song sheet at the door for the community singing and sat on the old canvas chairs. Anyone could enter the contest and there was always plenty of good talent. Chas, as the announcer, was good entertainment value and only he could have run it so successfully. When rodeos first commenced, Chas was a great draw card as announcer. Bruce and Alf could spin a yarn with the best and in the end never knew if it was truth or fiction. Alf sold unbroken brumbies to the Yanks out at the aerodrome during the war at 6 pound a head ($12.00), supposedly quiet horses of course. Sad to say they usually bolted overnight, so off went Alf to catch them again and resell the same horse to some other poor, unsuspecting Yank. He sold the best “bolter” six times and he seemed a bit resentful when it finally stopped bolting. The descendants of Carl (Monty) and Wilhelmina (Minna) Tilse will have a family reunion 9am to 3pm, on August 3, at the Mareeba Heritage Centre. For those wishing to attend, the cost is $20 per person and covers morning tea and a barbeque lunch. School children enter for free The family would love to hear from anyone who may have any information or photos. Katter furious about freeze

By Katherine Kokkonen

LOCAL councils will be starved of funds if the federal government’s plan to freeze the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Financial Assistance Grants (FAG) goes ahead, according to KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter. As part of the federal 2014-15 Budget, the government announced the freezing of indexation applied to FAGs for three years. Mr Katter said the freezing of CPI for FAGs would leave councils almost universally near bankrupt and starve them of further funds. “The Financial Assistance Grants have always favoured regional and rural councils and were given, in fact, to overcome the lopsided funding effect, where the city and the majority take all and the North West and rural councils get virtually nothing,” he said. “It is a small, but very significant part of the council’s budget.”

Mayor Rosa Lee Long “This smacks of nothing more than robbing Peter to pay Paul” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said the proposed freeze was disappointing, but the council had established its long-term financial viability. “It’s always disappointing when grants which have been in place for many years are withheld or altered by other levels of government because it affects the basic structure of local government budgets,” he said. The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) decided at its July 3 meeting to broach the subject of the freeze when it sends delegates to the North Queensland Local Government Association Annual Conference, held in Richmond, next month. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the FAG process goes to the heart and soul of Federal Government funding support for grass roots government. “At this point in time the freeze is unrealistic. None of our expenses are frozen and so therefore will increase, yet our capacity to meet these increases has suddenly been limited,” she said. “It is also a cause for concern as local governments have, for many years, considered things such as CPI increases to be very normal, and standard. So, to have one of those standard factors suddenly frozen, opens the question of how much else is also now up in the air so far as financial support from State and Federal coffers, which local government has traditionally relied upon. “Council ratepayers and government taxpayers are one and the same, so this smacks of nothing more than robbing Peter to pay Paul.”

Are you ready for bushfire season? Firefighters are asking residents in Far North Queensland: what have you done to prepare your property for a potential bushfire? Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) acting Far Northern Regional Manager Ken Beasley is reminding landholders that it’s your responsibility to prepare your land, ahead of bushfire season. “Survival during a bushfire is highly dependent on how well prepared you are before the event,” Mr Beasley said. “Too often we see landholders relying solely on firefighters to put in fire breaks and burn fuel loads on their own properties, without taking the steps to reduce fire risk themselves. “It is the property owner’s responsibility to manage the fuel load and reduce fire risk on their land. We’re urging landholders to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their property now, before fire strikes.” Mr Beasley said there were a number of steps landholders should to take, to reduce the risk of fire to their land, to people

and to property. “You must make and maintain fire breaks on your land, remove and dispose of any vegetation or flammable material that poses a fire risk and take steps to obtain and keep firefighting equipment,” he said. “You are also required to take measures to ensure an adequate supply of water and a means of escape from your premises, in the event of a fire.” Mr Beasley said landholders were also required to take reasonable steps to respond to a bushfire that breaks out on their land. “When a fire breaks out on your property, as the owner of the land, you are required to take all reasonable steps to extinguish or control the fire, immediately upon becoming aware of the fire, regardless of who lit it,” he said. “You must also report the location of the fire to emergency services.” For further information on preparing for bushfire season, learning what to do when a bushfire approaches visit www. ruralfire.qld.gov.au.

Kids and cops having a ball By Katherine Kokkonen An impromptu game of basketball has seen kids take on the Mareeba police on the basketball court. Laughter and friendly competition ruled the court as kids took on police officers and fire fighters. Acting Senior Constable Aleda Robbins organised the game, held on Wednesday, July 9, and hoped it would show a different side of police officers. She said in a lot of communities the only time kids interact with police is when something bad is happening and she hoped the basketball game would show that police are humans, too. “It’s school holidays and we just want

them to have a little interaction. They’re here playing, so we thought why not give them someone to play against and it makes it fun for them when they have a bit more of a challenge,” Acting Senior Constable Robbins said. “It’s just so they know that they can come to us and talk to us about anything at anytime and they are not just seeing us at bad times in their lives.” At halftime the kids were running circles around the police with the score at 122. Brendon Volp and Judy Strickland were down at the park and joined in the game. “They’re cool,” Judy said about the police. “When I get back on the court it’ll probably be 40-2,” Brendon joked.

Finding treasure at the recycle market THE new Atherton Recycle Market is breathing new life into people’s unwanted goods. The purpose-built facility opened on Friday and brings jobs to the region, creates opportunities for people with a disability, and responds to community outrage at the closure of the original Recycle Shop by the former Tablelands Regional Council. “On top of all of that, it gives the community a great opportunity to put into practice the age old saying that beauty, or usefulness, is in the eye of the beholder,” Mayor Rosa Lee Long said. “We have a great facility here at the Atherton Waste Transfer Station for recycling all sorts of materials, and this Recycle Market compliments and expands on that. “Even a quick look will show what a wide range of items are available here: furniture, sporting goods, bicycles and the list goes on.” Mayor Lee Long encouraged people to

Golden farewell for much loved police chaplains

Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Rolf Straatemeier and Father John Newman.

Sunday, July 6 marked the end of an era for the Queensland Police Service in the Far North Region. The QPS said goodbye to Father John Newman and Father Hilary Flynn after the celebration the Golden Jubilee of their Ordination. Father Hilary was ordained in St Patrick’s Cathedral Toowoomba on June 29, 1964, and in early 1965 he moved to Atherton Parish. In 1995, he spent the year at Franciscan University, Steubenville Ohio USA, and the last six years looking after Ravenshoe and Gulf Savannah Parishes. Father Hilary Flynn was appointed as parttime Police Chaplain to the Western Sector from December 2011. He has served a total of 49 years in North

Queensland. Father John Newman was also ordained in 1964, in fact one day before Father Hilary, on June 28, 1964, at St Mary’s Church, Kingaroy. Father John, while spending a large portion of the last 50 years in Far North Queensland as Parish Priest has also been the Chaplain to many, including the Queensland Police Service for 19 years. Father John was appointed as the QPS Chaplain in Mareeba in 1995. After he retired from the Parish in 2012, he continued as the QPS Chaplain until recently and now acts on in a voluntary role. Acting Assistant Commissioner Codd thanked Father John for his 19 years of service and said the police

community had valued his assistance. “The police community in North Queensland has valued the support you have given on the front line and in your own quiet supportive manner,” he said. “The Chaplaincy Services have always valued your comradeship, ‘can do’ attitude and the support you provided, not only to police officers but their families as well.” Father John has provided a valuable contribution to the welfare and support of members of the Service and their families and most recently with the death of Acting Senior Constable Casey Blain. Father John will be missed and the Tablelands Patrol Group would like to wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

By Katherine Kokkonen A victim of bitumen bandits is warning other home owners to be aware of the scam operating in the Tablelands. Scammers have left John O’Neill with a mess of a driveway and a hole in the hip pocket. Mr O’Neil was the victim of bitumen bandits, scammers who present at properties and offer to pave driveways for discounted prices, but take the owner’s money, leaving behind substandard work. Mr O’Neil said the scammer claimed to have overestimated his bitumen requirement for a large project, and rather than dump the surplus material he offered to bitumen Mr O’Neill’s driveway. The scammer told Mr O’Neil that the job had to be done within days and paid in cash. The scammer levelled the driveway and laid down gravel mixed with tar, work which Mr O’Neil said he will have to pay to repair. “It is nowhere near what you expect bitumen to be and he reassured me that it would settle down, so I handed the money over to

him,” Mr O’Neil said. While Mr O’Neil paid $3,700 for the work, he said the bitumen is so substandard the work would be worth only $500. Mr O’Neil has reported the scam to police and the Office of Fair Trading and wanted to warn other property owners. “When I realised what had happened to me, I went through several emotions—absolute despair and thoughts of how could I possibly be so stupid,” he said. “Eventually I picked myself up and I have lost the money, but I want to stop them from ripping others off. “They are worse than thieves. They prey on people, on people’s good nature and they are lowest of low.” Office of Fair Trading Manager Len Curran said he was aware of bitumen bandit scams occurring for the past few weeks on the Tablelands.

Mr Curran advised people to use local reputable tradesmen, rather than someone who just turns up on their doorstep. While knocking on people’s door is not an offence, the property owner is within their rights to ask them to leave and can call the police if they refuse. Mr Curran said to keep and eye out for people who take money or commence work within the cooling off period and who do substandard work. If you have been a victim of a scam or have been approached by scammers, contact Len Curran at the Office of Fair Trading on 4039 8479.

THE STRONGEST & SMARTEST CHOICE QUEENSLAND’S PLAN FOR SECURE FINANCES AND A STRONG ECONOMY NEW SCHOOLS HOSPITAL UPGRADES NEW ROADS NEW HIGHWAYS

THE STRONGEST CHOICE IS ALSO THE SMARTEST CHOICE After receiving a record number of ‘People’s Budget’ submissions, the Queensland Government has announced a strong plan to fix our debt and interest problems. We’ve already cut waste, now our plan includes the sale or lease of some assets. The government has already addressed waste and inefficiency and implemented a plan to run government services more effectively. As a consequence, reducing services has been ruled out. With so many Queensland families feeling increased cost of living pressures, raising taxes to reduce debt has also been ruled out.

HOW YOU HAD YOUR SAY ON QUEENSLAND’S DEBT AND INTEREST PROBLEMS Since February, more than 70,000 Queenslanders have collectively tackled the unprecedented threat to our future prosperity: our $80 billion debt and the $4 billion in interest, or ‘dead money’, that we pay each year. Never before in Australia has there been this level of public consultation about the economic choices facing a community. • 37 days of public information from 13 April to 19 May • 24/7 ‘People’s Budget’ interactive tool

Not everyone will agree with every part of our plan, but Queenslanders do agree that strong choices are essential to fund the schools, hospital upgrades, roads and highways we need for Queensland’s growing future.

This is a harsh but necessary step that I have not taken lightly and I can assure the community that this is not personal, not “sour grapes” (Cr Lee Long), and not “mischievous” (Cr Stocker). It is not even about taking one side or the other because TRC council (the councillors) are unsalvageable. Fact: the current team of councillors, left-over from deamalgamation and under the leadership of Mayor Lee Long and now Deputy Mayor Cr Stocker are comprehensively underperforming and we cannot afford their mistakes, games and infighting until the next quadrennial election in 2016. Regarding the Mayors casting vote, the problem here is not about the number of unanimous decisions that are mostly in relation to procedural and operational matters. The problem is the real decisions where the casting vote is always, and I mean ALWAYS, used in the same bloc of three, i.e. Cr Lee Long, Cr Stocker and Cr Hodge. To rely on the casting vote to appoint a deputy, and even to pass minutes, is a very basic symptom of dysfunction. The current state government has insisted on the “Powerful Mayor Model” and while power works well in the hands of some, it fails in the hands of others. The fact is the current group of councillors under the ‘leadership’ of Mayor Lee Long is a complete failure. It is time for the community to know the truth, rather than the spin, and to stand up for our region and for the good staff that hold the TRC together. The fact that the Mayor, Cr Stocker and Cr Hodge profess to be doing a good job and “professional” (Cr Hodge) is precisely the reason we need change. They are not acting in the public interest and do not want to change. The Councillors have been through mediation and corporate counselling to help them work together and this has had completely no effect because individuals have deeply entrenched patterns of behaviour, conduct and underperformance. Regarding the budget, in the words of Councillor Hodge from a Council meeting earlier in 2014 “The budget is shot to sh..”. And he would know because he sits on the TRC audit committee. Now the cuts to front line services and other closures and sales of assets are presented under the guise of a tight budget and the excuse of de-amalgamation. Something just does not add up. It is no wonder we get confused as residents when the two local papers, using Council’s own figures, print very different numbers. This can’t be explained away by ‘interpretation’ because they are numbers provided by TRC and the Mayor’s staff. Enough is enough and 2016 is a long way away when it comes to Council business and people’s lives. The best way to get an accurate and timely message to the Minister is through this petition and now is the right time to do it. Unfortunately, there is no way to shuffle the chairs and get a better outcome. If it was an option, and it is not, a seventh councillor would not cure this disease and unfortunately the only way to get effective change is for all six councillors to be dismissed. The TRC, made up of six councillors including the Mayor, is incapable of performing its roles and responsibilities. An administrator will bring stability and professional leadership to the region so we can stop the damage and get on track before 2016. I will not be providing running commentary on the numbers of signatures on the petition as I don’t believe it is fair to use the weight of numbers to entice people to back a winner or otherwise. In the simplest of terms, I can say the response in the first week of the petition was overwhelming and very positive and I hope the councillors will settle down and let this run its course rather than spending their time attacking residents, ratepayers and staff through the media or other mechanisms. I have now been contacted by four councillors who are supporting this plea to State government for an administrator. Two have asked to remain anonymous because they fear they will again be targeted with threats and bullying. With their permission I can say that Cr Linwood and Cr Pagani are willing to ‘get the sack’ in this way to get the change this community needs now. I respect that there will be differing opinions and finger pointing from different sectors however this is a step we have to go through. Please be kind to

Owners need to take responsibility of dogs Re: Vicious dog attack, The Express, Wednesday July 2, 2014. I have been walking and running around Mareeba for over four years now and have always had concern and trouble with unrestrained dogs or irresponsible dog owners. The last 16 months has been the worst with seven near attacks by dogs that are unsupervised, unrestrained or where the owners simply won’t shut their gates. On some occasions, I have had

my young children with me. I have found the owners to be blasé about the animal’s behaviour, however being on the receiving end is completely terrifying for me and traumatising for my kids. Any animal is unpredictable, no matter how long you have known or owned them. It is time that owners take responsibility and “ownership” of their dogs. Keep them locked up, before someone else gets needlessly attacked. This should never occur to anyone and with the slack attitudes of some owners, it is not a case of if, but when the next attack occurs. Name withheld, Mareeba

After the battle between the Autobots and Decepticons that leveled Chicago, humanity thinks that all alien robots are a threat. So Harold Attinger, a CIA agent, establishes a unit whose sole purpose is to hunt down all of them. But it turns out that they are aided by another alien robot who is searching for Optimus Prime. Cade Yeager, a "robotics expert", buys an old truck and upon examining it, he thinks it's a Transformer. When he powers it up, he discovers it's Optimus. Later, men from the unit show up looking for Optimus. He helps Yeager and his daughter escape but are

pursued by the hunter. They escape and Yeager learns from technology he took from the men that a technology magnate and defense contractor named Joshua Joyce is part of what's going on, so they go to find out what's going on. Review Joel Key: If you have been onboard with the Transformers franchise this long, you have some pretty wellformed expectations by now for what these movies will give you -- both good and bad. So let's just view the latest edition, Transformers: Age of Extinction, on a relative scale: This is probably the best film so far in the series. Michael Bay seems to have addressed a lot of the criticisms levied at the past few Transformers movies, because his latest Optimus Prime opus improves on numerous things viewers and critics have complained about. And for a movie based on a toy franchise, the number of people/Transformers/dinosaurs that get violently flash-incinerated, ripped apart limb from limb, or crushed in a destroyed building can just feel weird sometimes. Not to mention that all of the women in the film were lifted out of either an 80s beer ad or a Helmut Newton photo. All the perfect lipstick, unchipped nail polish, and high heels worn in every situation get sort of glaring after a while. Itís not that Bay seems aggressively hateful, but he does seem weirdly clueless -- like nobody will wonder why every single woman in his movie must be wearing false eyelashes at all times. Meanwhile, Kelsey Grammer and Stanley Tucci just look like middleaged dudes. Clearly, none of this is an effective deal breaker. We're four films in; if you're down for aTransformers movie, youíre definitely down for this one. And hey, nobody can deny that hot babes in short shorts might be on your list for what you WANT from a Michael Bay film. But nothing beats Optimus Prime riding a T. rex.

Even in winter, it’s vital to slip, slop, slap as Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan explains.

(PG)

In fact, we know that only three per cent of adults in Tablelands abide by all five recommended sun protective behaviours in winter: Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide. Sun protection is required when the UV Index is 3 and above – and in Queensland, that is all year round. It may be surprising to many that the UV Index level and temperature are not at all linked, and you can’t rely on the temperature to prompt you to protect your skin.

SunSmart habits falter

With the temperatures cooling over the July and August period and the humidity easing – the idea of heading outdoors and enjoying the sunshine is enticing. Many of our Relay For Life teams are doing just that and making the most of the mild weather to host last-minute fundraising events, social occasions and getting active in time for Relay. Often with winter comes the perception that your hat and sunscreen are no longer needed – and more often than not, they have already been stashed away at the back of the closet. But did you know, staying SunSmart throughout winter is actually just as important as being SunSmart in summer. So while you’re out preparing for Relay – remember to Slip on protective clothing, Slop on SPF30 or above broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, Slap on a broadbrimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on wrap-around sunglasses. Not many Tablelands adults take sufficient precaution against skin cancer during winter, increasing their risk of the state’s most commonly diagnosed cancer.

Spirit shines at Atherton Show FINE weather and an exceptional exhibits saw the Atherton Show shine during the school holidays. More than 3,000 exhibits were on display, with numbers up in all categories except agriculture. In amongst the needlecraft and cut flowers was an incredible wooden alien, which earned craftsman Anthony Flemming Champion of the Champions in the Arts and Crafts Hall. Atherton Show President Stephen Hocking said it was a fairly good show overall and was pleased with the result. “It was another fine show with a good roll up, and the fireworks on Monday were good as they always are,” he said. Show Manager Jenny Grech said while gate numbers were up, overall numbers were down by 200 compared to last year’s show. Ms Grech said this could possibly be due to the show coinciding with the school holidays.

Those who did come to the show made the most of beautiful weather conditions. “The weather made it a really nice day to be out,” Ms Grech said. “It was the best weather I had seen in my seven years with the show.” Ms Grech said she had received positive feedback, especially about the entertainment that included stunt bikes, juggling and magic shows. She was looking forward to putting on another stellar show next year and encouraged volunteers to come and give a hand. “There are so many areas of the show that no matter what a person is interested in, can do or wants to learn about there is a job for just about everything,” she said. The full list of results from the Atherton Show can been seen on the The Express Facebook page.

Lowe keeping on high

Team digs in for Mareeba United Clancey Baker, John Haggarty, Norm Baker and Edi Falcomer keep the Mareeba United Football Club spotless. By Katherine Kokkonen

THE makeover might not yet be complete but spectators are already commenting on Mareeba United Football Club’s revamp. A work for the dole program has seen a team of 15 paving, marking the field and cutting the grass at the Mareeba field, since April. Supervisor Edi Falcomer said the workers helped to keep the grounds spotless and spectators have been saying the work, especially the new paving, looks great.

Goalkeeper Ben Lowe has his eye on the ball as the last line of defence. By Katherine Kokkonen

Ben Lowe’s hard work ethic as part of the Under 13 State Hockey Team doesn’t hint at the story behind how he first became a goalkeeper. “I actually got into it by laziness,” Lowe, 13, said. “I didn’t want to run and the coach wanted us to be fit, so I decided to be the goalkeeper because they don’t have to run.”

There was no sign of laziness when Lowe competed at the 2014 U13 Men’s State Championships, earlier this month. Lowe was a standout athlete and earned Goalkeeper of the Tournament and was named Best Player of Division 3. Lowe has been playing hockey since he was six-years-old and first took up the goalkeeper position in the Under 10 team. While he said there is pressure in being the last line

of defence, he stays cool by remembering what he has been taught and focussing on the ball. “When you save a ball it feels good and you really feel you’re doing something for the team,” he said. While Lowe hoped to one day make the Australian team, his goals while being part of the state team are simple. “To have fun and play well,” he said.

“It has helped lift the look and make it more attractive,” he said. “A lot of people have been commenting on how good it has come up. The spectators and other teams have commented on how a little bit of paving have made it much nicer.” Mr Falcomer said the workers have a wonderful attitude and will soon put in a new fence and gardens. “They’re all out here and willing to help and they’re excellent,” he said. “What you ask them to do; they get in and do it.”

Bulls turn Lions into Cubs

The Mareeba Bulls made the Leichhardt Lions look more like cubs, cruising to a 5-0 triumph, at White Rock, on Saturday. The home side set-up tried to catch the Bulls on the counter, but the Mareeba side’s ability to move the ball quickly in tight spaces easily opened up the Lions pack. The Bulls deservedly took the lead through Elliot Gardner midway through the first half, and despite a small period of pressure from the Lions, the Bulls took the game away with goals from Anthony Mete (40th) and Robert Pendenza (43rd) in a blistering last five minutes of the opening half to take a 3-0 lead. In the second period, the Bulls kept up the tempo with the Lions unable to lift due to the orange and black boys cutting through the Lions with ease. Despite only scoring another two goals in the second half, the Bulls missed numerous clear chances. The score could have ended up a cricket score if Garder, Mete and Captain Victor Madrid had converted. The Bulls kept one eye on this week’s cup and Thursday’s return leg against the Lions, resting Wayne Srhoj, Mete and defender Kane Alderton for the final twenty minutes of the match. “It was a good performance, the most

pleasing aspect was our ability to move on a bumpy pitch, that’s the way we want to play, make our opposition work—it was pleasing on the eye,” Bulls’ Coach Srhoj said. “Again it was similar to the 3-0 over the Heat, simple quality football. I am pleased for the players, they are enjoying their football, playing our football and the byproduct is the points.” There is not rest for the Bulls though, with a tough and tricky trip against the Edge Hill Tigers on Tuesday in the semi final in the Sportscene FNQ Cup and then a return catch-up game against the Lions, at Borzi Park, on Thursday evening. In worrying news for the Lions, the Bulls are expected to welcome back a host of the players, including former state league players Steven Cater and Larry Maggio, plus youngster Marc Torrissi and Anthony Henderson, meanwhile in the reserves match Paul Ruiz played out a full 90 minutes and older brother Josh also looked to have started to getting back to his best. The Mareeba Bulls second division team have moved into second spot on the FNQ second division ladder after a comprehensive 4-1 win over the Atherton Eagles at Borzi Park on Sunday.

Blues dominate arena Mareeba Turf Club Secretary John Thurlow has seen numbers increase at the club and is looking forward to another great meet next month.

Mareeba bucking the racing trend By Katherine Kokkonen

Mareeba Turf Club is bucking the trend with punters, families and spectators coming through the gates in increasing numbers. Entries through the gate have increased from 1,500 in 2009-2010 to more than 4,000 in 2013-2014. Secretary John Thurlow was proud of the club’s success, especially when compared with other clubs across the state. In Racing Queensland’s 2014-2017 strategic plan, CEO Darren Condon described attendance across all three codes as “at best static, or declining, and facilities often fall short of the minimum standards expected”. Mr Thurlow put the club’s upward trend down to the hard work done over the past five years and the club’s vision for the future. He advised other turf clubs to follow suit and pitch events to the family and community, not just to the hardcore punter. “Racing in the country has a bit of a reputation as an old boys club, and a lot of clubs have still got that, we’ve gone away from that attitude and it is paying big divi-

dends,” he said. “We went away from the old, traditional racing club and we introduced things like marquees and on-ground entertainment for people to come—and they’ve come. “The people of Mareeba have supported us very strongly and we just try new and better things all the time.” Mr Thurlow said the best thing about racing in Mareeba was seeing everybody catch-up and have a good time. “Our biggest day by far is Boxing Day, when all the people from out on the stations come in to Mareeba to see family and lost friends for Christmas and they all come out to the race meet,” he said. Punters are also reaping the benefits of increased spectator numbers, with the club providing more prize money for races and receiving more field nominations. “We always have good nominations up here, now, and we never used to. We consistently have big fields,” he said. The Mareeba Turf Club hosts five meets a year with the next meet on August 2, ahead of the Mareeba Annuals on September 6.

The mighty Blues proved too tough to beat in the Interstate Challenge, on Saturday Night, winning the competition 32-28. While the Mareeba Rodeo crowd was unable to cheer their team on for a win, they were still thrilled by the fierce competition. Behind the chutes, there was plenty or ribbing between the two teams as pride was on the line to prove which state had the best competitors. NSW Captain Luke Morgan said the scores usually came down to the line, and put this year’s score difference down to NSW winning the toss. “Winning the toss was a big thing for us because we chose the side of stock that we really are suited to and left the Queenslanders with a few tougher ani-

mals to ride,” he said. Morgan said the rivalry between the teams was strong in the arena, but put aside when they head to the bar afterward. “When the Queenslanders come down they give us plenty of cheek in front of our home crowd and it hurts, so we love to come up here and give it to them,” he said. “We’re full of cheek here, but we’ll go to the pub tonight and get on it. We’re all really good mates.” Morgan said the team was looking forward to coming back next year to defend their title. “As a team we performed really well,” he said. “We want to keep coming back and keep doing as well as we can.”
