Not your everyday Santa By Boyd Robertson Santa’s ditched the old-fashioned sleigh this year for a more extreme form of aerial transportation, taking to the skies above the Tableland in a propeller-driven powered paraglider. American expat Don Berg decided to spread the spirit of Christmas from the air by donning the Santa costume, obtained from friend Ross Menniti, before an airborne jaunt over his Chewko Road property on December 10. Afterwards, he walked into the Express office in Mareeba and offered these brilliant shots taken by wife Angie Berg “to bring some smiles to all of the Mareeba folks during the holiday season”. Don, a recreational powered paraglider pilot for 15 years and preacher at the Mareeba Christian Fellowship, said he had originally meant to fly over the nearby Endeavour Farm dressed as Santa for that facility’s clients but windy weather kept him close to home. Travelling at a maximum speed of about 20 kilometres per hour and only weighing about 18 kilograms, Don’s Italian-made ‘Top 80’ powered paraglider is easily buffeted about by winds, meaning he usually only flies in the mornings and afternoons. “Around here in the middle of summer the thermals coming off the cane paddocks are just intense, they can send you up hundreds of feet in minutes,” he said. “I don’t normally like to fly that high because there’s less to see – normally I fly about just over the treetops so I can yell at people on the ground, they can hear me quite clearly. “I learned to fly in about an hour, the difficult part isn’t really the flying – it’s learning the weather, trying to predict what the wind is going to do.” He is considering appearing as ‘Flying Santa’ at future Mareeba community events if rules and regulations permit. The device’s 80cc engine runs on two-stroke petrol and will fly for about three hours on its 11-litre tank. Don flies all over the Tableland, including around the hot air balloon tours and over the mountains to the coast. His paraglider was shipped over from the United States and set him back about $5,000, but he reckons it’d still make a more cost-effective option than the sleigh for Santa. “The fuel for this is probably cheaper than feed for flying reindeer,” Don said. “Plus the reindeer’s methane emissions would probably cause more global warming, so really it’s a more environmentally friendly option.” Flying the device is not without risk: the rapidly spinning propeller will easily remove fingers or be shattered by bolts coming loose from the frame, and Don’s engine once cut out while he was over water on the coast near Port Douglas. “I had to swing it round and glide it back in, I was praying to the Lord like crazy to get me back safely,” he said. “I actually landed right at the very water’s edge with my toes in the surf so it was a close one.”

Hard work pays off for top student

By Boyd Robertson

Hard work, focus and support are the key to achieving academic success, according to Mareeba OP 1 recipient Kai Priestly (pictured). The OP1 is another feather in the cap for the 17-yearold St Stephens Catholic College (SSCC) student, who took out several academic awards at her school’s presentation night. Kai said she was “very happy and surprised” to see her outstanding result on her computer at midnight on December 13. “I really wasn’t expecting it - our OP predictions are pretty vague and I had been told I was most likely going to receive something between a 1 and a 5, so this was definitely a good surprise,” she said. “I had to balance study against my sport - I love swimming, running and lifesaving - so I had to be efficient at studying, using whatever time I had available and staying on task. “What really made the difference is the support I got from my family and my teachers - knowing I could email my teachers about something at 11pm and get a response was really cool.” Kai plans to put her OP1 to good use and will straight to the University of Queensland in Brisbane to study law,

Wireless microphone warning The Australian Media and Communications Authority (AMCA) is warning everybody using wireless microphones to change up their act by 2015 before new laws make existing equipment illegal to use. From January 1 2015, changes to the Radiocommunications (Low Interference Potential Devices) Class Licence 2000 will mean all audio transmitters, including microphones, will no longer be able to operate in the 694-820 megahertz range. Devices broadcasting in the range of 520694 and 1790-1800 megahertz will still be legal to operate. The changes are due to the gradual switching-off of analogue television and the ‘restacking’ of digital TV signals, which is opening up a space in the broadcast spectrum referred to as the ‘digital dividend’ between 694 and 820 megahertz. The digital dividend will mainly be used for services like 4G mobile broadband, but cannot share space with low-powered transmitter devices as analogue TV previously did.

A large portion of the wireless microphones present because there are no plans yet released in Australia operate on the digital dividend and as to where Telstra and Optus, who now own are used by several organisations across the most of the affected frequency bands, will be operating.” Tableland. hoping to specialize in business and international affairs. St Stephens principal Ida Pinese commended Kai on her success, also congratulating the other high-achieving SSCC students. “Kai is to be congratulated on her success,” Ms Pinese said. “As the College Dux and Rotary All Rounder for 2013 she is very deserving of this prestigious accolade. “Congratulations are also extended to Kate Donovan (OP2), Hannah Snell (OP3) and Cyree Fenton (OP4) - the seniors of 2013 have upheld the legacy of their predecessors by achieving excellent OP results with 77 per cent of the OP-Eligible studens being awarded a score between 1 and 10.” Kai’s advice to younger students looking for a good OP was to “rely on your teachers,” but to also be sure the academic accolade was what they were truly after. “It’s good to have the option of the OP but if people are looking for other courses in life like TAFE or apprenticeships those are also a perfectly fine option,” she said.

Roo attacks backpacker

T

he year started in flames, with a dry wet season and hot temperatures seeing the regions fire-fighters battling large blazes at Koah and Speewah just days after New Year. For the remainder of 2013, firies have spent more time battling political rather than natural blazes. A State Government shake-up of the Department of Community Safety and a revamped urban fire levy has seen rural fire-fighters hold a series of protests across Queensland, including the far north. On January 10, Mareeba fruit picker Lo Kuo Ksuan, 30, was attacked by a kangaroo on his way to work and was left with deep gashes along his arms and close to his eye. The attack led to calls from farm owners and wildlife carers for more information to be provided to tourists about

the dangers of Australian wildlife. The kangaroo was later identified and put down. Also in January, Tom Gilmore, the former Tablelands Regional Council Mayor – now Mayor-elect of the Mareeba Shire Council – exclusively lifted the lid on the troubled Mareeba Waste Water Treatment plant. The plant, commissioned in 1968 is discharging ammonia and other toxic nutrients into Two Mile Creek at a rate 30 per cent higher than permitted in its environmental protection licence. The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has since issued a mandate the facility be upgraded – a cost estimated at $25 million. Finding the funds to upgrade the plant looms as a major early challenge for the reformed Mareeba Shire Council.

MARCH

FEBRUARY

Wild weather on Australia Day A freak weather event during the Australia Day long weekend saw the Tableland lose mobile phone and landline services for 22 hours with ATM and internet services also affected. The outages were a result of flooding and landslides caused by a monster weather system that devastated southern communities. Tableland business leaders said it was fortunate that outage

didn’t coincide with one of the region’s largest trading days. On February 13, The Express exclusively reported the Tableland’s largest farming company Howe Farming had bought out competitor Rigato Farms. The acquisition saw Howe Farming add 300 acres of bananas and 20 acres of avocados bringing its total portfolio to about 1400 acres. The Mareeba District Rodeo Association was recognised as

The Australian Bushman’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association’s Rodeo Committee of the Year. The Mareeba committee beat out Tumut, Walcha and Scone from New South Wales and Mullewa in Western Australia. The award is voted on by rodeo competitors who select a rodeo based on its facilities, prize money, stock quality, contractor variety and “general atmosphere”.

Mareeba Shire Council re-born after de-amalagamation On March 9, the Mareeba Shire Council was reborn after a long-anticipated referendum overwhelmingly showed residents desire to split from the Tablelands Regional Council. Community outrage surfaced in March over provisions contained within the Tablelands Regional Councils draft planning scheme. The plan attracted 2000 submissions from the community railing against the overlays arguing that it would restrict development and drive down land prices. Both the TRC and State Government have conceded that there are discrepancies with the overlays. The planning scheme has yet to be adopted.

Mareeba’s favourite young battler Indie Rose Taurima got a surprise visit from The Wiggles on February 15. The daughter of former Mareeba local Jen Smith and Olympian Jai Taurima was diagnosed with Infant Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in August 2011. Recently, the family has been given the devastating news that Indie has relapsed following a bone marrow transplant. On November 29, the Mareeba community dressed in pink and black as a show of solidarity to the family. A fund-raising group in Mareeba, the IndieStructables, has raised about $125,000 to help pay Indie’s living and medical expenses.

After months of speculation and mud-slinging a major restructure of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) saw two jobs, a nutritionist and an administrator lost from the Mareeba Hospital – a third less than originally expected. The 2013 Great Wheelbarrow Race was a record breaking suc-

n June 12, the Mareeba RSL confirmed plans to build a 175 seat cinema. The cinema has since opened and has been branded Rising Sun Cinema. A public meeting between residents of Mount Molloy and Julatten and top brass from Mackay Sugar became heated on June 4. In April Mackay Sugar signed a sugar supply agreement that will see about 700,000 tonnes of cane transported from the Tableland to Mackay Sugar’s Moss-

man Mill from 2014. Trucks carrying the cane will pass through some local towns, with residents furious they were not consulted. Thousands from across the nation, including then Prime Minister Julia Gillard and then opposition leader Tony Abbott, gathered on the shores of Lake Tinaroo on June 22 for the opening of the Avenue of Honour. As the ceremony was being held news filtered through of a 40th soldier who had been killed in Afghanistan.

Officer dies in car crash On Good Friday, Mareeba lost one of its brightest young lights. Constable Casey Blain was killed in a single vehicle accident on his way to Georgetown. At his funeral on April 9, the chapel at St Thomas’s in Mareeba was packed to the brim with mourners. Constable Blain is the 140th Queensland police officer to be killed in the line of duty. On April 10, The Express exclusively revealed that a state government mapping program Queensland Globe had classified Mareeba and Mount Molloy as a floodplain – despite neither town having ever flooded. Developers and real estate agents

in Mareeba said classifying areas as a floodplain could result in devaluing properties and increased insurance premiums. Local Government Minister David Crisafulli appointed former Southern Downs Regional Council chief executive Rod Ferguson as the man to oversee the de-amalgamation of the Tablelands Regional Council on April 12. The Express was invited to cover the opening of Port Bajool’s new multimillion tourist destination – Crystalbrook Lodge. Overlooking a 300-acre lake the lodge is located between Almaden and Chillagoe on an 85,000 acre station.

cess with 73 teams and nearly 700 competitors taking part and raising a combined $461,000 for charity. Mareeba experienced rare traffic jams on the weekend of May 29 and 30 as more than 16,000 flocked to the Rotary FNQ Field Days. Run by the combined Rotary clubs of Mareeba and Atherton, the event is the largest agricultural field day

north of Townsville. Exhibitors at the event said the economic impact of the event would linger for months. Mareeba Tyrepower was deemed to have the best site with owner John Raso saying attending the biennial event had become a non-negotiable for the business. “Nothing else even comes close comparing with what this event does for our business.”

Budget, rodeo and The Cup The Tablelands Regional Council handed down a “conservative” maintenanceheavy budget in July which featured a general rates rise of 4.08 per cent. Fees and charges increased nominally across the board. A crowd of 12,000 flocked to Kerribee Park on July 13 and 14 for Mareeba’s favourite event – the Mareeba Rodeo.

Arguably the most recognisable trophy in Australian sport made a pit stop in the tiny Tableland town of Herberton on July 26. The Melbourne Cup, which is valued at $175,000 and made of gold, visited the Herberton Historic Village as part of a national tour promoting the ‘race that stops a nation’.

Pink pumpkins in Mareeba

Mareeba farmers began harvesting pink pumpkins in September as part of a Coles fund-raiser which coincided with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Vince Mete, Pep Bianco and Amando Salerno had been growing the pumpkins since April. A gene added to the Jarrahdale variety is what gives the vegetable its pink colouring. “It’s not as though it is strawberry flavoured or anything,” Bianco’s brother Tony told The Express. Coles Business Category Manager for Vegetables Daniel Williams said a portion of every pumpkin sold would be donated to the McGrath Foundation.

AUGUST

Jack meets his heroes

After more than a decade of near misses and posturing, work on a new fire station in Mareeba began in August. The $3.3 million station is expected to be complete by February, 2014. The existing Mareeba Fire Station in Byrnes Street was built in 1928 and is one of the oldest permanent stations in Queensland. As the sun dipped beneath the horizon at Granite Gorge on August 2, a young man with a rare brain disorder was belatedly introduced to the two strangers who had saved his life a month prior. On July 5, Trinity Beach couple Chad Donohue and Leah Nugent pulled Jack Smith, 17, from a shallow pool of water where he

was having a seizure. After being released from Mareeba Hospital Jack’s family returned to Charters Towers but they kept in touch with Leah and Chad before meeting for the first time on August 2. The colour and flair of Mareeba’s annual multicultural festival returned in August with festival chair Guiliano Cordenos hailing the 2013 event as “bigger and better than ever”. The festival featured performances from 28 groups performing traditional song and dance from their respective homelands. The State Government has continued to provide funding support for the festival, committing $15,000 for next year’s event.

Near miss for truckie

Tom returned as Mayor A strike by prison guards at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre in November made a mockery of the State Government’s official opening of a $445 million redevelopment in April. The Queensland Industrial Relations Commission has recommended the State Government commission the new cells as a matter of urgency. Tom Gilmore defeated political rival Mick Borzi by

just 150 votes in the November 9 Mareeba Shire Council election. Mr Borzi requested a recount but was denied. Mr Gilmore said he had the skills and experience to make a new MSC successful but warned of an initial period of austerity.

DECEMBER

Disappointment over mine Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has expressed his disappointment that creditors of failed miner Kagara remain in the dark about what, if any, money they will be able to recoup. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission has granted administrator FTI until the end of January, 2014 to meet financial re-

porting obligations dating back to 2012. In December, Mr Katter had a hook-up with ASIC chair Greg Medcraft urging the “veil of secrecy” be lifted. A spokesperson from ASIC said it wasn’t withholding information but that it understood Kagara’s predicament is “a serious matter which has had devastating consequences for creditors”.

The Department of Housing and Public Works confirmed the Mareeba Agriscience Hub had no tenant for 2014. The department said they were investigating a range of options to fill the tenancy. On October 11, a semi-trailer ran off the road at the ‘Jump-Up’ at Walkamin, with only a bar fridge preventing the cab from collapsing and crushing Gympie truck-driver Glen Condon. Tableland rescue workers took almost three hours freeing Mr Condon who was airlifted to Cairns Base Hospital before being flown to Royal Brisbane suffering from diesel and acid burns, internal organ damage, broken bones and cuts and abrasions. Express journalist Boyd Robertson has been in regular contact with the family and got a call from Mr Condon a fortnight ago. Mr Condon said he was back on his feet and wished to pass on his thanks to his rescuers. Mareeba’s former TAFE campus sold at auction on October 18 for a cool $1.315 million. The State-owned Tinaroo Creek Road facility was bought by Mareeba family the Ebersbachs who hope to turn it into an agri-tourism property.

Selfless teen donates boyband tickets By Ryan Groube

Kayla Feltrin gave away tickets to One Direction to the Starlight Children’s Foundation

A selfless young Mareeba woman who donated One Direction tickets to the Starlight Children’s Foundation has been thanked by a seriously ill young girl. Kayla Feltrin, 18, a graduate of Mareeba State High School in 2012 and a first year nursing student at JCU, won tickets to One Direction’s Sydney Concert on October 6. Having already booked tickets to the dreamy boyband’s Brisbane show on October 6; Ms Feltrin decided that someone else could benefit from the tickets more. “I just wanted to do something that would make someone that I didn’t know

happy,” she said. “I just started doing my nursing placement [at Cairns Hospital] and I was walking through the paediatric ward and I wondered if these kids had done everything they wanted to do. That is why I donated to the Starlight Foundation.” Starlight Children’s Foundation Community Programs Coordinator – Celebrity Rebecca Carr wrote to Ms Feltrin to tell her the tickets had been given to Kirah Crook. “I just wanted to let you know that we have been able to donate your One Direction tickets to one of our Starlight families,” she said. “When we phoned them to tell them they were going to the concert, the kids ab-

solutely screamed down the phone they were so happy”. Young Kirah also wrote to Ms Feltrin to thank her for the donation. “I went with my mum and my two sisters and we had the best day ever,” she said. “My favourite boys are Niall and Louis and my favourite song is The Best Song Ever.” Ms Feltrin said attending the band’s Brisbane concert had been an awesome experience and that even though she is a big fan she “doesn’t go crazy like all the others do”. “There were so many people at the concert and I was stuck right in the middle. My ears went deaf a couple of times.”

New report from chamber The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce will launch its annual economic publication at the Mareeba RSL on December 19. Express journalist Ryan Groube was granted a sneak peak at the 40-page report entitled ‘Stability in our Economy’. House prices in Mareeba have hit a six-year high and the Tableland is positioned to cash in on the proposed Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort with the chamber painting an optimistic future for the town’s economy. Far northern economist Bill Cummings was contracted to provide the bulk of the statistical content of the publication. Although the $4.2 billion resort will be built at Yorkeys Knob, there will be significant flow-on effects for the Tableland if it is built, the report concludes. “Workforce needed [during construction] is estimated to peak at about 9700 with ‘flow-on’ effects estimated to take total jobs created to 17,000.” “This would represent almost a 20 per cent increase in the Cairns workforce and result in a substantial increase in population. With Kuranda so close and Mareeba within an hour’s drive, there will be major opportunities for Mareeba-based businesses and workforce to help meet

STABILITY in our ECONOMY a shortage of supply from Cairns itself.” The report highlights building ECONOMIC material suppliers, construction workers and “reasonably priced accommodation” as key areas of the local economy that could cash in on the development. Unlike many mining projects, the report says that the jobs created by the development would be ongoing with an estimated workforce of 10,000 and a ‘flow-on’ workforce of double that. Figures provided by Mr Cummings also show that the local housing sector is trending upwards. Mareeba area median house sale prices have hit $320,000, up $6000 from 2008 and well up from the 2009 low of $290,000. Unit sale prices have also jumped significantly in the past year. For the 2012 financial year the median sale price for a unit in the Mareeba area was $189,000, in 2013 (to August) it had jumped to $254,000. Unit prices, however, remain well below the 2008 average of $466,000. The chamber publication also in2013-14

cludes an easy-to-read business owner’s checklist, a summary of the key economic and social events throughout the year and a look at key target areas for economic growth. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce spokesperson Joe Moro said there was reason to be optimistic about the future of the local economy and that key data in the report showed that optimism wasn’t blind. Mr Moro said dramatic increases in the gross value of the agriculture sector as well as the rebounding real estate market were key indicators the region was emerging from the post Global Financial Crisis slump. “The chamber sees a very bright future for the Mareeba area and although there are challenges, there is no doubt about that, there are signs that things are coming back,” he said. Mr Moro said to what extent the Tableland would benefit from the proposed Aquis development was hard to accurately quantify he said there would be flow on benefits. To maximise those benefits however, Mr Moro said transport links between the coast and Mareeba needed to be improved. “Development has always occurred in Mareeba but all the [existing] Kuranda Range has done has slowed that growth,” he said. The report will be available from December 20.

Lighting up everyone’s Christmas By Boyd Robertson The desire to put smiles on children’s faces motivated the Moloney family to light up their house with Christmas lights year. Their efforts were judged the Best Rural property by the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) for council’s Light Up Your Christmas 2013 competition. Animatronic reindeer, solar-powered lights and a rosily-glowing train featured in their ensemble, masterminded by 14-yearold Brodie Moloney. “I just think it’s fun to get into the spirit of Christmas,” Brodie told the Express.

“And if it looks good, that’s even better.” Brodie and his dad David put up most of the decorations two weeks ago, taking about five hours to unpack, plan and erect the entire display. “I didn’t really have much of a plan to it,” Brodie said. “Dad and I just walked around and said ‘that looks like a good spot, put something there,’ and just kept going until we had used everything up.” Mum Norma said the family enjoyed cruising around the Tableland at Christmas time to check out other houses’ decorations in the past and decided to have a real crack

at their own display this year. “We always loved driving past and looking at everyone elses’ Christmas lights,” she said. “This year we decided to give it a proper go because it might bring a smile to another child’s face. We didn’t have a specific theme - aside from Christmas - we just tried to go bright and cheery.” David Moloney could only guess at the length of Christmas light tubing used in the display. “Every year it seems we have a little bit more than the year before,” he said. “It looks good to get it all out and put it on the house so everyone can see it.”

BLA BARE FOOT ART COMPETITION Students at Mareeba State High School excel in the Arts. Recently Year 11 Photo-Imaging students entered into the BLA Barefoot Art Competition sponsored by Proarch Podiatry. Congratulations to Daniel Cabassi who was the winner of the competition and to Madalyn Wallace who was awarded third place. Both Daniel and Madalyn were invited to the BLA Awards Nights in Cairns to receive their prizes. Well done Daniel and Madalyn on your success!

AT senior graduation this year I focussed my message on the Year 12 motto “Choice, not chance, determines destiny”. While our graduating students are nearly adult and able to make suitable choices, decision-making like anything requires practice. Further, I believe that parental support is critical to helping your children to make good choices. Some children want to have a say about everything that involves them. They have no problem letting parents know what they want and how life should be. Other children will avoid making decisions and will happily sit back and follow the lead of others in anything from fashion to food eaten at dinner. I was recently reading some information from the Parenting Ideas website about decisionmaking and I have included below some practical tips for helping our young people to become good decision-makers. It is challenging for parents to know when to make decisions for children and when to stand back and allow them to decide. Decision-making in families can be separated into three areas: 1. Parents Decide: these are decisions where there is no negotiation. E.g. going to school, bedtime (at certain ages), mealtimes. 2. Work things out together: these are areas where you and your child negotiate outcomes. E.g. when to come home from an outing, TV programs. 3. Kids Choose: give your children full authority within reason in some areas. e.g. choose the sport they play, school activities, clothing When it comes to letting the kids choose the following three questions to help him or herself assess consequences of a decision they may make. This is a particularly useful guide as kids move into adolescence: • Is this behaviour safe for me? • Is this behaviour fair to others? • Is this behaviour smart and in my long-term best interests? Children often can’t see the long-term consequences of their decisions so it’s useful to give them information to help them make smart choices. Also some children leap before they look. They need to be reminded to slow down and consider some of the possible consequences of their actions.

Planting a Rainforest Plot... the forgotten secret! Thorough soil preparation is the forgotten (but most important) factor in creating a rainforest plot, whether it’s a small garden in suburbia, or a major revegetation project. Well dug up, thoroughly loosened soil is absolutely essential. If a plant is to produce good growth above the ground, it must have a strong and welldeveloped root system below the ground. Basically, plant growth is directly proportional to root growth. Roots cannot grow in hard ground, and this is particularly true of rainforest plants. In contrast to the aggressive root systems of the open forest eucalypts and wattles, rainforest plants have roots which are, in general, quite timid. In fact, rainforest seedlings are adapted to stop growing and to remain dormant on the forest floor for years while they wait for a gap in the canopy to give them light and space to grow. In cultivation, this same dormancy is very readily induced by any kind of obstacle, such as hard ground, or root competition from grass, weeds or existing trees. Rainforest trees must be given very wellprepared loose soil free from grass and weeds if they are to actively grow rather than sit in a dormant state. So... rainforest plants grow best when you garden in the traditional fashion. Pretend they’re roses, a vege garden or a commercial orchard, and plant them in a bed of thoroughly loosened soil. If you have a large block of land and want to recreate a rainforest, or revegetate your block, consider using a machine such as a dozer with rippers to loosen the soil. Sounds drastic? It works! The results will speak for themselves. The ideal depth is about 2 feet (50cm). Rip more than once, in different directions. Except on sandy soil, a rotary hoe is not good enough as it does not dig deep enough, and it tends to compact the soil below the dug region. And do not use a post-hole digger. Firstly a post hole (which is deep and narrow) is totally the wrong shape for rainforest plants which require just the opposite – a large area of loosened soil for their surface roots and a depth of only about 50cm. And secondly, post-hole diggers produce a hole with hard polished sides that act as an impenetrable barrier to the timid roots of rainforest plants. But always apply commonsense! For instance, it is quite unnecessary to use machinery to prepare a bed on beach sand, and it would be totally irresponsible to use a bulldozer to rip the soil on a steep creek bank. Soil preparation is unexciting. It’s boring. It’s hard work. It’s unfashionable and forgotten. But it is essential if you want your plants to grow well. Don’t skimp. Trust us, it’s worth the effort!

See you at Yuruga when you plant your rainforest plot!

Indigenous Jam ‘empowering’ By Boyd Robertson Hip-hop, Rhythm and Blues and country mixed with traditional styles at The MBA Jam indigenous music event held at Davies Park in Mareeba on December 15 attracted a crowd of about 300 people, with performance by local and travelling artists Performers included Jay Jay Mont, Billie-Ann Grainer, Milton Riley aka ‘Mr Hypnotise’, Ewamian Band, Aaron and Shaquile Banjo, Soul Predatorz, Gekkz, the Cold Water Band, Cook islands group Te Fenua and Native Ryme among many others. The Jam was a product of the Mareeba Young And Awesome (MYA) program, which aims to provide alternatives to binge drinking for Mareeba’s indigenous community. A grant of about $200,000 from the previous federal government allowed MYA to put a series of music events at the Mareeba PCYC and Mareeba Spanish Club over the past 12 months, in addition to purchasing professional-grade musical equipment that will stay in the community. Organiser Ann Stapledon said support for the event by both artists and the community had been overwhelming. “Guys like Native Ryme who have waived their fee

for performing to come here to support the indigenous community are just amazing,” she said. “This event is meant to show the kids and even the adults that you don’t just have to drink all the time, there are ways you can get out there with performing your own music and even put on shows like this yourself. “Really, it’s about empowerment.” Soul Predatorz member Semi also said that the community focus of the event was important. “We’re all about community,” he said. “We’ve got guys from all over the world in our group - Fiji, America, Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders and as much as we would like to hype it up and take it on the road and see the world, we’d much rather do our thing here for a community like this. “That’s what’s important to us.” Mr Hypnotise, whose original songs ‘Hips and Thighs’ and ‘NBA Riders’ were described by Ms Stapledon as “commercially viable”, said the Jam had been a good opportunity for artists like himself. “I reckon it’s a pretty good idea,” he said after performing. “It was really good - for guys like me it’s definitely a good thing to try out.”

Christmas Celebrations 5 Tips for avoiding the Christmas Pud The silly season is officially in full swing and for many people this is a time when healthy lifestyle habits get thrown out the window. With so many opportunities to do things other than go to the gym or cook a fresh meal, it’s no wonder people end up with a snowmanlike appearance after the festive season. What good is there in celebrating if you’re feeling guilty all the time? Here are some healthy festive tips: • Family Exercise Fun - Plan activities that the whole group can participate in after big festive meals. E.g. backyard cricket or a swim at Lake Eacham. • Double Book - Organize to have double engagements on days when attending Christmas parties. This will help you pace yourself and spread out the day. • Don’t Starve – It’s an unhealthy habit to starve yourself or skip meals prior to big holiday feasts. This stresses your body to the max and results in overeating. Because you tricked your body into thinking there was no food about, your fat production will increase in preparation for the next time you skip meals, which means you’ll put on more weight by starving yourself. • Ease Off, Don’t Quit – it’s OK to ease up on your exercise program if the social calendar is filling up, but don’t quit all together. The mentality of “I’ll start up again in January” will put you many months behind, and makes it harder to lose the extra pounds that you put on over Christmas. • Buddy Up – Do you have a family member, co-worker or friend who has the same holiday health goals as you? Help keep each other motivated through this period by exercising together & being accountable to one another so you can both ‘survive’ the holiday season. By sticking to a game plan, the silly season doesn’t need to break your spirit or your pants. Enjoy your well-earned break while keeping an eye on the prize. Looking after the health and wellness of both yourself and the family over the festive season will instill good habits, and give you all a greater quality of life in the long-run.

David Kempton, Member for Cook, took time out to spread a bit of Christmas cheer today with a festive-themed donation the Mareeba District’s Meals on Wheels. “This year, rather than send out Christmas cards, I decided to donate the money I would have spent to a local charity,” he said. But rather than just hand over a cheque, Mr Kempton opted for a more “festive” approach, delivering $250 worth of Lions Christmas Cakes and locally made Christmas puddings. The treats will be divided up and delivered to the 40 clients serviced by Meals on Wheels throughout Mareeba and Kuranda. MOW Coordinator Leanne Wallace described Mr Kempton’s support as “fantastic.”

Dance Connection Studios Mareeba took to the streets on Friday, December 13, to spread the word about their ‘Next Generation’ concert that is on this Saturday at the Cairns Civic Theatre. The group also went to the Mareeba Kids Campus to hand out Christmas gifts to the kids.

Regan Newton, Steven Stewart and Tina Caamano from Suncorp in Mareeba get into the festive spirit by donating a hamper (trolley not included) to St John’s support worker Johnny Newman Santa made a flying visit to Mareeba Community Kindergarten on December 10. He is pictured here with Heidi Unwin, Sienna Avolio and Meeshia McCurley. Teacher Janene Yuke also got in on the act.

Mareeba State High School Interact Club helps Mareeba Men’s Shed Kent Duffield (Activities Coordinator) with Cecil Aylife (coordinator) from the Mareeba Mens’s Shed was recently presented with a $550 cheque from Tara Sharpe, President of the Mareeba State High School Interact Club. The Interact Club has raised over $3,300 in 2013 with the intention of donating the monies raised to worthy causes both locally and internationally.

Remember loved ones

The end of the year brings a multitude of emotions, time to reflect on the year past and of course to consider the year to come. We all hope for a new beginning after a year which has presented many of us with many challenges. Some of us have lost loved ones, and some have marvelled at the arrival of new members of our families. How wonderful is this ever changing life that we live in this glorious land that we call home? Christmas is the ultimate time for family and for those that we love. This is without doubt the time of our lives to remember to say “I love you” to our family and friends. It is a time to rejoice in friendship, care for others and to be thankful for all of our blessings. For Sally and I the new year brings new challenges, with family and grand children moving to Perth, so we have some understanding of the emotion of those families drawn apart by the need to move for service to the country, or for work, and our thoughts are with them all. Sally and I would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas, a wonderful and fulfilling New Year and excellent health for 2014. Merry Christmas, Tom and Sally Gilmore

It’s been an actionpacked year I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. It has been an action packed 12 months with the Newman Government and all MPs working hard to meet community expectations while relying on limited funds. On January 1, the Mareeba Shire will embark on an exciting new phase of economic growth and community development. I will be working closely with our new council to ensure that the level of infrastructure, investment and service delivery that has been lacking for so many years is finally restored. The holidays is a great time to reflect on everything we as a community have achieved and where we would like to go in the future. With growing confidence in the local economy, spurred on by continued infrastructure investment, key developments and exciting new directions, I believe things can only get better for our community members and business owners and I look forward to working with you all closely in 2014. Until then, I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. David Kempton Member for Cook

As we near the end of 2013 my message to our readers these holidays is to take stock. Each year we seem to get busier and busier and as a result some of the simple joys that come with living in this extraordinary part of the world can be forgotten. That is the beauty of Christmas. It allows us, for a brief while, to reflect on the challenges we have faced, the adversity we have overcome as well as those moments of happiness and success. As a newspaper we are in the privileged position of being to able to share with you, our readers, the good times and the hard. In writing this message I spent time flicking through file copies of The Express from this year and I am amazed how far we have come as a region. As a newspaper it has been a year of change and growth. In July, we increased our print run by 25 per cent to 13,000 copies and begun home delivery in Atherton. It has been gratifying how quickly the Atherton community has embraced our newspaper and we look forward to working closely with the community in 2014. In October, The Express was named the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce’s business of the year. Receiving the award was gratifying not just for myself, but for all the staff who have put in an enormous amount of work since we began in April 2010 in making

S easons greetings

What have you done that is good today?

Jesus got his message across by telling simple stories that we could all understand. The stories illustrated that we have a responsibility to produce something good, be happy for other people and to love our neighbour. I think it would be wonderful if we all thought of one single good thing we could do for somebody else on the lead up to Christmas. It might be mowing the elderly lady’s lawn that lives in your street, giving the neighbour’s dog a bone or smiling at a few people even though they may be unfriendly to you. When I am saying my prayers with my grandchildren, we have an examination of conscience I ask them what they have done good today and what they have done today that isn’t so good; and I’m sure it would be good if we could all do that before Christmas.

The practice of putting up Christmas decorations dates back to the 15th century, while the first Nativity scenes were recorded in Rome in the 10th century. Heart-shaped ivy leaves symbolize the coming to Earth of Jesus Christ and eternal life, while holly is intended as defence against witches – its thorns and red berries represent the Crown of Thorns and the blood shed by Jesus at the crucifixion.

For me, I am going to take a week off and I’m going to do some surfing. I’m going to go down to the bottom paddock and have a look around and see what’s growing on my 10 acres of land. If I have a Christmas wish, we could also think about the positive attributes of our family and friends that we will spend Christmas with, forget the bad things and just think of the good things. I wish a very happy and a holy Christmas to everybody. Please don’t lose sight of what old Saint Nicholas was all about when he started this Christmas business off, it’s not all about getting and spending. God bless everybody, Happy Christmas. Christmas is an opportunity for us to be thankful to God Tangmalangaloo by Father Patrick Hartigan (1879 – 1952) was one of the poems in my high school anthology. Hartigan ministered to folk in inland Australia. Like other bush poets, he found inspiration for his verses in his encounters with people he met. Tangmalangaloo is a humorous but realistic narrative about a young lad from that outback locality who was asked by a visiting clergyman ‘What is Christmas Day?’

The punch line at the end of the poem reads: “The ready answer bared a fact no bishop ever know – It’s the day before the races out at Tangmalangaloo.” If you were asked ‘What is Christmas Day?’ What would you answer? Would you say something like the lad in the poem? His answer was based on what he knew people were doing at that time of the year. Alternatively, your answer could focus on the

Christian origins of Christmas Day. Historically, it is the day when the birth of the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, is observed (Luke 2: 10-11). The word Christmas is a compound word, made up of two words “Christ” and “mass”, which together mean the worship of the Christ Child, God incarnate. Whatever our answer, sin is a serious problem for all of us, no matter how hard we try to be ‘good’. Christmas Day is an opportunity for us

all to be thankful to God for sending His Son into our world, whether we live at Tangmalangaloo, Mareeba or anywhere else. Christmas Day can be seen to represent our thankfulness to God for setting in motion His perfect plan for our salvation from our sins. Phil Peachey Lay preacher, Mareeba Presbyterian Fellowship

Most precious gift is Jesus Isaiah 9:6-7a for unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. 7a Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end... The most precious gift we receive at Christmas is Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. God the Father gave His only Son to His beloved creation displaying His great love for us. At Christmas we celebrate Christ’s birthday. Our current 2013 calendar makes a direct reference to the “Year of the Lord” and pretty much Christmas is celebrated by all; even those who don’t believe in God. It is right that the world acknowledges God’s gift of salvation through His appointed Saviour; Jesus Christ, by celebrating the day which has come to mark His birth. We exchange gifts with our loved ones and friends. Our love for each other is expressed in this giving just as God the Father gave His most precious and treasured gift... His Son... Jesus Christ came into the world, to die for us on the cross, paying the price for all our failings – redeeming us back to a right relationship with our heavenly Father. We receive peace in our hearts and

minds from the Prince of Peace... Jesus conquered death and all evil when He rose again from the dead, ascended into heaven, from where He is reigning and ruling with fairness and justice forever and ever. So let us rejoice this Christmas and let us have a peaceful celebration filled with God’s love in remembrance of Jesus Christ’s birth into the world. Peace and good will to all men. S easons greetings The real meaning of Christmas

and enjoying special moments with them. Please remember to drive to conditions and remain safe on our roads during this peak period. For the young, and perhaps the not so young, the excitement of Christmas Carols, of a nice Christmas meal, the Christmas tree and receiving presents remains something so many of us look forward to. It is a time to think of those who are less fortunate than ourselves whether they be in our own country or overseas. Whether their beliefs and cultures are similar to ours or not, does not matter. We live in this beautiful part of the world and relish the friendliness of our people and the character of our communities. As we enter the cyclone season please remember to assist your neighbours and those less fortunate among us. Once again, on behalf of councillors and staff, I again wish you all a very happy, healthy and safe Christmas and a prosperous 2014.

On behalf of the Tablelands Regional Council I wish to extend to our vast Tablelands community, our very best wishes for a safe and happy festive season. One might well ask where the year has gone. Yet it is the time of year once again, when we think of the importance of Christmas and the real meaning of Christmas – the birth of Jesus, in a manger at Bethlehem, and how that has influenced so many of our lives. Because of the significance of that event, we as a nation, celebrate the December 25 each year as a time of giving and sharing. Of caring, not only of those near and dear to us such as our family members, but also of our extended families and those in the wider community. We look forward to being with our friends and family

S easons greetings

It’s beginning to look like Christmas “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go” so says a well known Christmas song. That is certainly true as you make your way around the Tablelands. We have had our community Christmas carols, banners hanging in our main streets declaring the

Christmas season and if you go out for a drive after dark you will see many houses decked out in Christmas lights. It certainly is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I wonder what you have planned for Christmas this year.

WALKAMIN SERVICE STATION Des, Di and Katherine would like to say thank you to all our valued customers & friends. We hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday period. Merry Christmas and happy New Year! We will be closed Christmas Day.

I imagine for many it will be a time of connecting with family. It will be a time to fire up the BBQ and enjoy good times with family and friends. In among all our celebrations I hope that we all take the time to spend some time reflecting on the beginnings of Christmas. We celebrate Christmas because of Jesus coming down to this earth and being born to a poor peasant girl named Mary. This baby spent his early days lying in a feed trough in a stable. His birth was announced to the world by a choir of angels.

Michael and Maggie Lee and Staff wish all a Happy Festive Season.

THANK THE WONDERFUL STUDENTS, PARENTS AND LOCAL COMMUNITY THAT HAVE MADE 2013 A MEMORABLE YEAR AND WISH ALL A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON!!

He was visited by some wise men who wanted to discover who this baby was. This baby was Jesus who is the Saviour of the world and who would some years later die on a cross for us so that we can have eternal life. So, this Christmas I would encourage you to celebrate and enjoy the season but don’t forget how Christmas began. Take time, like the wise men, to discover for yourself who this Jesus is and when you do it will be the best Christmas of all. May you know God’s blessing as you celebrate this most wonderful time of the year - Christmas. Pastor Allan Sharpe Mareeba Baptist Church

Jesus is the reason to be jolly this season On behalf of myself, the Parish Pastoral Councils of Mareeba and Dimbulah, I wish you and your families a Holy and Blessed Christmas Season. Jesus is the reason to be jolly this season. He is the reason to be hopeful. As the world struggle against the war and natural calamities, we must not, as people of faith, lose sight of the good things and the good people that make our lives worth living. As Mitch Albom in his book The Time Keeper, he writes, “We all yearn for what we have lost. But sometimes, we forget what we have.” We have been given the great gift of love by Jesus our Saviour. He is inviting us to reach out to him, to let go of our burdens. He took life to sanctify our lives. Now is the time to come together to the Baby of Bethlehem and his Mother to ask them to bless us and give us the spirit. ÊLet us all participate in the Sacraments, let us be a true light unto the nations. At this time, we must reflect on our blessings. We have much for which to be

thankful: our faith, the love we show to our neighbor, the rich Christian heritage, a successful Year of Faith and our prayers to our Virgin Mother. As faithful people, may we gather together to be one in the Holy Spirit so that we may become a sign and instrument of Christ’s presence in the world. Please accept my best wishes for a joyful Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Michael Belonio, O.S.A. Catholic Parishes of Mareeba and Dimbulah

S easons greetings

God is open for business!

God’s business is Love and Hope and those two things can overcome any negative power in our lives. The Mareeba district has gone through a tough time in the last couple of years. We have seen little rain and businesses and farms are doing it tough. The council amalgamation and deamalgamation process has caused distress and division amongst the community. Yet, at this time of the year, we can know that there is hope and it comes through the story of Christmas and continues on. God is open for business. This year remember that every present you give is a gift of hope and love. The presents you receive are also a gift of hope and love. God is certainly open for business this Christmas! May you all have a Merry Christmas and a joyful new year.

Last Sunday, I asked the congregation: “What would you like to say to the community in Mareeba?” I got many answers which included: “Peace to All”, “God loves us regardless of who we are”, “God is Love” and “Christmas brings us Hope”. All these are completely true and bring some aspects of Christmas to us. One answer though was really inspiring. One voice exclaimed that Christmas reminds us that “God is open for business!” Two thousand-odd years ago, the Israelites felt hopeless. They were a conquered, divided nation. There had been no prophet for nearly 400 years and many had felt that God had abandoned them. Yet, in a stable in a little town of Bethlehem, God opened for business through the birth of God’s son, Jesus. That birth brought hope to the poor, sick and disadvantaged. This birth brought unity to the people of that nation. That same birth, however, created fear in those who gained power through bringing disunity and misery.

Sales finish off hard, dry year

Mango to Go ready to go

Hopes pinned on wet season By Boyd Robertson Mareeba Saleyards has closed operations for the year, wrapping up on December 10 with the sale of about 380 cattle. The last sale comes after a year of hardship for the Queensland cattle industry, with two thirds of the state in drought and still recovering from the live export ban in 2011. Prices at the sale averaged about 180 cents per kilogram, with livestock manager Mark Peters describing good buyer confidence but mixed quality cattle on offer. “Buyer confidence was OK and Elders had a good run of 60-odd Brahman from Lakeland which were sold, and there were also some light steers sold which made about 190 cents per kilogram,” he said. “Quality was a bit varied and there weren’t as many good cattle as there were two weeks ago. “Opportunistic sales over the next six weeks are going to be very limited – if sellers have been sitting on their hands waiting, they’ve missed the bus.” Mr Peters did say although Mareeba Saleyards was shutting down over the Christmas break, small-scale auctions would continue in Malanda and Innisfail. Mareeba Saleyards will resume operations on February 4, 2014.

Drought conditions and the aftermath of the live export ban have continued to plague Queensland farmers through all of 2013, although hope remains that the wet season will bring some measure of relief. AgForce Queensland board representative Alex Stubbs said 2013 had been one of the hardest years ever for Queensland graziers. “The biggest difficulties for farmers this year have definitely been the fact that two thirds of the state have been affected by drought for some time and also the effects of the live export ban two years ago – that caused a massive oversupply of cattle on the market that everyone is still trying to deal with,” Mr Stubbs said. “45 per cent of the entire Australian cattle herd is in Queensland, and 65 per cent of the Queensland herd is in droughtaffected areas.” “There has been some early good storms coming our way, however so far it’s really just enough to get some of the grass growing, not to fill up the reservoirs so cattle can drink.” Mr Stubbs also quashed rumours that meat processors in far northern Queensland would shut down until Easter, saying AgForce had been advised by a ‘senior manager’ of major processor JBS Swift that the company would be resuming operations by January 22, 2014.

Mango to Go creator Brian Springell, Emerging Knowledge Enterprises managing director Richard Brown and Coles managing director Ian McLeod od

By Ryan Groube Supermarket giant Coles has listed a Tableland grown and produced mango product which will be rolled out in 10 stores across the far north. On December 10, Coles managing director Ian McLeod travelled to the Tableland to visit a Biboohra farm – the manufacturing base for Mango to Go. Cairns teacher Brian Springell developed the Mango to Go concept in 1997 using Kensington Pride mangoes to create an icecream style, single serve treat. Teaming up with a mango farmer at Biboohra, Mr Springell began manufacturing the product at the farm. For many years, it was sold on the side of the road before Mango to Go was launched in 2011 as Mr Springell looked to take the product “to the next level”.

In June, Mr Springell got his big break, catching the eye of Coles at a “Meet the Buyer” event in Cairns which attracted more than 140 suppliers hoping to get their product on the shelves. Mr McLeod said Coles viewed Mango to Go as a “very encouraging product” with a “great future” with the product being one of 20 that was listed. “What we try to do [with the Meet the Buyer events] is go around the country trying to find small companies where we can actually see an opportunity for them to grow and develop by working with Coles,” he said. “Clearly when looking at the product you have got to make sure there is a customer demand for it. When you are looking at products and you want to list them, sometimes you are looking for something that is quiet special and quite different to what else is on the mar-

ket.” Managing director of Emerging Knowledge Enterprises (EKE) Richard Brown also saw potential with Mango to Go. Mr Brown and Mr Springell have a handshake agreement that will see EKE take over the management and logistics of the company. “We bring in the management and the advisors, it doesn’t matter if it is a little Mum and Dad operation or someone who wants to work with a corporate like Coles,” he said. “The first thing that ticked the biggest box for me [in getting involved] was the opportunities that Coles brings to the table.” Mr Brown said EKE was looking at purchasing a 350-acre organic farm at Bowen to boost the quantity of Mango to Go that is being produced.

2013

the year in review the year in review

The ‘Gators took out the CDRL’s Reserve crown in 2013, breaking a 22-year hoodoo. Captain Glen Williams is pictured hoisting the premiership trophy

January

The year started with the Mareeba United Football Club stepping back from its involvement with the new Australian Premier League franchise, FNQ FC Heat. The Heat replaced the FNQ Bulls from the defunct Queensland State League. MUFC had successfully lodged a joint submission with the Centre of Excellence program in Cairns, but backed away at the last minute to refocus on the local league. MUFC president Alex Srhoj told The Express at the time: “It has been a fantastic ride. The club enjoyed its time at the top but now it is time to refocus on the local Mareeba football community which unfortunately took a back seat over the past couple of seasons due to the large commitment with the former QSL.” The Mareeba Bulls premiers finished second in the race for the premiership and made the semi-finals, while the Reserves won the competition. Two young Mareeba netballers Jacinta Harrigan and Kiara Diamond were selected for the Australian Indigenous Netball teams after starring at a carnival at the Gold Coast.

February

In early February, hundreds of paddlers, more accustomed to battling ocean waves, converged on Lake Tinaroo to kick-start the Queensland outrigger canoe season and lend a hand to a battling Tableland club. The regatta was hosted by Hekili Cairns in association with Dam Outriggers – a Yungaburra-based club that had suffered a sharp decline in membership. More than 260 people attended the event to compete in either individual or crew races over distances of between 500 metres and 12 kilometres. Dam Outriggers secretary Carl Schedlich told The Express the event had done wonders in raising the profile of the club. The racing industry spotlight was fixed firmly on Mareeba in February, with the Mareeba Turf Club securing a four-page spread in a state-wide racing publication. An article, written by Cameron McPherson, featured on pages two to five in February edition of Racing Queensland Magazine Thoroughbreds. The glossy, monthly magazine has a circulation of 4350 and is the official publication of Racing Queensland. Mareeba Turf Club president Wes King said securing column inches in the magazine was great for the club. “There is only so much room in these sorts of magazines and to get featured in the front part of the book is really unheard of for small country clubs.” The article focused on the inaugural Celebrate Country Race meeting, an initiative of the State Government, that features a $10,000 open handicap race.

March

Mareeba boxer Jason Ivanov defeated Chris Vaas at a middleweight showdown at the ‘Clash in the Canefields’ tournament on March 2. Ivanov won the bout in a split decision and later attributed his victory to strength gained from regular feeds at Nina’s Kebabs. The Mareeba Motorcycle Club received a $42,800 grant from the State Government in March to install a state-of-the-art sprinkler system. The units are placed at 20 metre intervals along the dusty 1.5 kilometre track. MMC club president Mark Redding said it had been difficult to run proper race meets with the track in such dry condition. “At the moment we have been taking the water truck out but by the time we get back all the water has evaporated. These tracks are in the best condition when riders can form ruts in the track – it gives them more grip and allows them to accelerate out of corners.” Installation of the system had been delayed but has recently been installed.

April

The Mareeba Bulls dedicated their opening win of the year, a 4-2 thumping over reigning premiers Douglas United, to a departed friend. Constable Casey Blain, who passed away in a single vehicle accident on Good Friday, was a regular at Bulls games and was

known for incessantly blowing a trumpet. Prior to kick-off a “minutes noise” was held with hundreds of spectators urged to create a heck of a noise for Casey. During the 60 seconds of bedlam, two police cars drove to the middle of the pitch and added their sirens to the din. The Bandits ushered in Mareeba’s next generation of cricket stars at their end of season presentation night in April. The third division Cricket Far North team were unable to defend their 2011-12 crown, finishing the 2012-13 season in fifth. Club president Bomber Adams said the season had been about developing the club’s young talent. Youngsters David Ferguson, Rowan Foxwell, Kodee Shannon and Mark Wilcox became Bandits regulars. Shannon was named most improved while Wilcox was named best Under 16s player – despite spending most of the year playing in the seniors. The Gordon Pashen shield for best batsman went to captain Brendan Payne, the John Henry memorial shield to Robert Taylor while Danny Shaw took out the Frosty Firth memorial shield for the club man of the year. The far north’s soccer community was devastated by the loss of Paul Cronin who passed away in April after a brief battle with cancer. Cronin played a key role at the Mareeba-based FNQ Bulls as team manager for four years. In 2013, he took on the role of logistics manager with the FNQ FC Heat. He passed as the Heat won their second match of the year. The Mareeba Bulls wore black armbands on Sunday as a mark of respect.

May

Casey Herbohn defeated Rodney Kilpatrick in a tense three-setter in April to claim his maiden Mareeba Tennis Club Men’s Championship. Herbohn took the final 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. The two players have both been involved with the local club for more than 10 years. Herbohn has since moved to Townsville to study at James Cook University while Kilpatrick has since made the move to Brisbane. Mareeba school students booked their place on the Peninsula Cross Country Team after dominating at regional trials at Mareeba State High School in May. Damien Barbir, Tegan Parker, Baedyn McClelland, Johnson Makoti, Geoffrey Chalmers, Kate Tomerini, Lisa Keeling and Tom and Kate Donovan all qualified for the Queensland Championships which were held in Bundaberg in July.

June

The first season for tennis and basketball came to a close in June with Semi-Pros and Baiada Steggles taking out their respective Mareeba Basketball Association grand finals. Carl’s Cougars: Scott Macleod, Carl Brown, Charlie Martens and Hongyu Feng proved too strong in Group One at the final of Mareeba Tennis Club’s night fixtures. Former Mareeba Gladiator Ben Hampton scored two tries in his National Rugby League debut with the Melbourne Storm on June 24. The Storm ended up losing the game 18-12 but Hampton was lauded for his performance after filling the void left by playmaker Gareth Widdop who was taken from the field with a leg injury. Hampton played for the ‘Gators in the 2007 CDRL premiership under Chris Sheppard.

July

Emerald cowboy Shane Kenny clinched the champion cowboy title at the Mareeba Rodeo in July. Jake Simpson won Junior Champion Cowboy with Shaye Land taking out Junior Champion Cowgirl. Charlie Colless took out the Open Bull Ride while Tony Caldwell won the Open Saddle Bronc. Revee McCormack won the Open Bareback Challenge with Cody Sheahan winning the steer wrestling. The Atherton Roosters broke through for their first win of the year in July, defeating Mossman/Port Douglas 56-16 at NQ Hardware Stadium. The Roosters ended the season with the wooden spoon but picked up a further victory in the final rounds and were competitive against the Gladiators in the following weeks Tableland Derby going down 42-22 in a scoreline that flattered the ‘Gators.

August

Thousands flocked to the sleepy Tableland town in August for the Mt Carbine Bull and Bronc Ride. Cody Teece took out the open bull ride while Billy Ericson was too strong in the open saddle bronc event. Mt Carbine Bull and Bronc Ride president Alan Pedersen said the event was a great one for up and coming cowboys from across the far north. The event remains a sentimental favourite for many as the most enjoyable sporting event on the Tableland. Brady Musmarra took out the inaugural Joan Holden Top Gun award in honour of a Mareeba Motor Racing Club stalwart. Joan Holden was a founding member of the club and her husband Max the inaugural president. Joan passed away in late 2013. In recognition of Mrs Holden’s contribution the club renamed its annual trophy day, held in the first weekend of July, the Joan Holden Memorial Top Gun Trophy Day. The major award is the Top Gun trophy which is presented to the driver who achieves the highest overall points for the day across all grades. Equestrian rider Samantha Le Brocq reaffirmed her status as one of the nation’s premier riders after piloting her beloved horses Max and Wazza to a series of top 10 finishes at the Ekka. In a jam-packed

PAGE 34 The Express, Wednesday, December 18, 2013

schedule Le Brocq competed in 22 events over five days in a series of show horse disciplines against the best riders in the country. The Ekka runs from August 8-17 and is viewed as one of the most prestigious events on the equestrian calendar – matched only by the other shows in capital cities. Riders have to qualify by winning at agricultural shows “on the circuit” just to compete. In 19 of her events, Le Brocq placed in the top seven.

September

The Mareeba Bulls and Mareeba Gladiators covered themselves in premiership glory in September. On September 14, the Bulls reserves gave the Marlin Coast Rangers a 7-0 flogging to become Far North Queensland Football champions. Less than 24 hours later, the Mareeba Gladiators reserves ended a 22-year hoodoo to claim the Cairns and District Rugby League crown by defeating the Yarrabah Seahawks 54-20. Hordes of soccer fans from the Tableland travelled to Cairns to catch a glimpse of international superstar Alessandro Del Piero. Del Piero was due to play for Sydney FC in a friendly against the Brisbane Roar at Barlow Park. A leg injury kept Del Piero taking to the field as spectators began to chant “we want Del Piero” towards the end.

October

Rugby league superstar Jonathon Thurston travelled to Mareeba in October for clinics at St Thomas of Villanova and Mareeba State School. Talking to The Express, the Cowboys co-captain said it was important the NRL didn’t neglect regional schools. “Kids up here don’t always get the chance to see the big players and teams because they’re not in the city.” When I was at school there was never a visit by any professional players so I think it’s cool to do this”. Jon Newham and his son Jake from Mossman took out major awards at the annual Lake Tinaroo Barra Bash. Jon won the champion angler award after landing 28.4 kilogram and 24.55 kilogram barras. His son landed a 24.5 kilogram barra. The event is run by the Tableland Fish Stocking Society with 1499 adults taking part and 300 juniors.

November

Golfers from Atherton took out the FNQ Pennants C Grade crown in November defeating Cairns Golf Club for their first win in more than a decade. Mareeba Golf Club also made the finals but fell to perennial heavyweights Cairns Golf Club in a replay of last year’s final. Emilio Papa was granted a black belt in Bushi Kai, a karate-based martial art – at a grading at the Mareeba PCYC Hall in November. Papa was awarded the grading after completing 100 sit-ups, 100 pushups before 20 rounds of sparring. Instructor John Nucifora said it was extremely rare for someone so young to reach the rank of black belt.

December

Junior rugby union players hurled their coach, and Highlanders president, Michael Barlow into Lake Tinaroo at the club’s end of season presentations. The small club, which has about 60 players on the books, had a mixed season playing in the Cairns competition. The Under 14s upset TAS/JCU in the third place playoff 26-17 while the Under 12s only won one game all season. Corey Barlow was named best and fairest in the Under 14s and Rachael Brcko in the Under 12s. The second season of Mareeba Tennis Club’s night fixtures competition came to an end in December. Cassie’s Crickets – Ryan Groube, Cassie Burness, Libor Konicek and Tua Aue were too strong from Cameron’s Crusader Bugs. Matthew’s Meat Ants took out Group Two, Dan’s Dengue Mosquitos Group Three and Belle’s Bulldog Ant’s Group Four. Mareeba Basketball Association’s end of year finals were again won by Baiada Steggles and Semi-Pros in tight finals.

Local talent returns as Gladiators coach By Boyd Robertson

New Mareeba Gladiators coach Cameron McPherson

Former Mareeba Gladiators player Cameron McPherson has been named the side’s new coach for 2014. McPherson, 38, will replace previous captain-coach Rod Jensen and will focus on building up the defensive strengths of the Gladiators with a “clean slate” approach. “One thing I’ve noticed about the ‘Gators in 2013 is that they are very good on the attack because they score plenty but their opponents are usually getting in quite a points as well – that’s definitely something I want to work on,” McPherson said to The Express. “Overall really all I’m aiming for is to have the boys be a better side at the end of 2014 then at the start.” McPherson said although said the loss of Jensen, who was instru-

mental in the Gladiators’ reversal of fortunes for the 2013 season, would hurt he would not attempt to emulate the former NRL player Jensen’s technical approach to coaching. “Rod Jensen will be a big loss for the team especially considering his experience as a player,” he said. “My philosophy to coaching is to start small and simple – all I’m asking is that everyone put in the hours for every training session,” he said. “If they put in those hours they will improve on the field. “I believe in honesty and mutual respect, I give that to players and all I ask is for it back – if a player breaks that honesty and trust they will have to earn it back.” McPherson played hooker for the Gladiators for ten years and helped win the team two premierships in 1999 and 2001, and also played in Foley shield sides for Cairns, Tully

and Townsville. Since 2007 he has coached the Townsville Fury and Burdekin Roosters sides, winning a Foley Shield in 2010 and 2011. He said he “jumped at the chance” to return to his home grounds as coach. “I’ve always wanted to get back in Mareeba and have this opportunity,” he said. Gladiators president John Arcidiacono but McPherson’s local knowledge would work to the team’s advantage. “He’s a local boy – having someone like Cameron, who already knows the culture, is going to be a big help for him,” he said. Arcidiacono reminded all prospective players that training starts at 6pm this Thursday at Davies Park. The club is also currently looking for additional coaching staff.

Rainy races still filled with fun and fashion By Boyd Robertson A downpour of summer rain failed to put a damper on the Atherton Turf Club’s Quicksilver Day races on December 14. Heavy showers at about 2:30pm sent all but the most dedicated race fans scrambling off the viewing lawns until falls subsided about an hour later. Cairns jockey Sonja Wiseman won the BJS Plumbing & Civil Contracting Benchmark 65 Handicap 1400-metre race atop Koolasacat, following up her win at the Mareeba Annuals earlier in the year.

Wanderson D’Avila riding Hoakstess and Kerry Rockett atop Bandidas were close behind her. The mud-spattered Wiseman said after the race that she was “feeling pretty good” taking out the placing, and that Koolasacat had dealt with the wet weather admirably. “I haven’t had a lot of luck in the last two weeks – but I have ridden 31 winners in the past five months,” she said. “[Koolasacat’s] breed puts back down in the wet so the conditions didn’t really bother him. Fashions Of The Field’s final rounds had to be moved inside the

pavilion due to rain, with siblings Chris and Katie Micallef winning Best Dressed Male and Best Dressed Female, respectively. Judges Samantha LeBrocq and Cassandra Barletta awarded Margret Russell the title of Best Dressed Mature Female, with Gracyn Masterson taking out Best Dressed Teenager. Katie Micallef, who wore a “thrown-together” assembly including a top from Bardot and fascinator by Linda Gloger, also picked out the winning suit for her brother and cheekily claimed credit for his award. Katie and Chris Micallef won Best Female and Best Male at Fashions on the Field

Bandits end season on win

By Boyd Robertson

The Mareeba Bandits have finished off the season with a narrow comevictory in a top-of-the-table clash against the Cairns Rovers. The victory leaves them at the top of the Cricket Far North table for the year. The Bandits were set the grim challenge of chasing 162 runs to match the Rovers’ first innings from the previous week, and only reached their goal with one wicket to spare.

A debut century by batsman Danny Shaw, assisted by Robert Wallace, helped turn the tide and the Bandits finished up 192 off 54 overs, bowling out another five overs at the end of the game for some extra points. Shaw said the game had been highly enjoyable, given the closely matched nature of the two teams. “We always have great play against the Rovers with a lot of banter so this game was a ripper,” he said. “They had us completely stuffed

but Robert and I went in for a 70run partnership, I guess that was the turning point of the whole thing.” Shaw also wanted to extend special congratulations to young player Kodee Shannon, who came in to bat on the final wicket of the game alongside Shaw. “He kept the ball out and he hasn’t been at the bat for that long,” Shaw said. “He really helped us get those winning runs.”
