oncept plans for a $10 million sports stadium and precinct on the western side of Mareeba were finalised at a meeting at the Leagues Club on Monday. The proposed development, instigated by the Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank, has been in the planning stage since October 2012. At Monday’s meeting, the Mareeba Sporting Precinct reference group made final adjustments to conceptual plans which will form the basis of a presentation to the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) on May 7. The precinct would be located at Firth and Eales Park, adjacent to the Mareeba Leagues Club, and would include a multi-purpose indoor sports stadium complete with facilities for basketball, netball and futsal. There are also plans for outdoor netball courts and additional rugby league and touch football fields as well as a cricket oval. The reference group consists of Chris Lea (Mareeba Junior Rugby League Club), Di Pregl (Bendigo Community Bank), Nipper Brown (MSC councillor), John Thurlow (Mareeba Turf Club), Gordon Shelton (Mareeba Leagues Club), Silvano Ruggeri (Mareeba Basketball Association) and Connie Martens (Mareeba Netball Association). Originally, the group had looked at expanding on the existing precinct at the nearby Borzi Park but the area was deemed to be too heavily utilized to be expanded. Ms Pregl said if successful the project would “set up Mareeba’s sporting clubs up for the next 20 to 30 years.” “This came about when we (Bendigo Bank) found out both the basketball and netball clubs had a major court shortage,” she said. “Rather than attempt to get grants for the clubs individually we felt there was more of a chance if we could fund a facility that would bring as many of our sporting clubs together in one area.” Mareeba Netball Association (MNA) president Connie Martens said the MNA was formed in 2010 and has been operating out of the Mareeba State Primary School since its first season in 2011. “While we are forever grateful for the school for allowing us to make a start if we ever want to take the club to the next level we will need a proper facility,” Mrs Martens said. Mareeba Junior Rugby League is also in need of more space to accommodate its 10 junior sides while junior cricket are also looking at consolidating facilities at Firth Park. At the May 7 MSC meeting, the group will hope to secure in-principal support from council. If approved, the group will look at employing a contractor to do detailed design work on the project.

Meg Chynoweth takes part in the World’s Greatest Shave at an event in Dimbulah on March 15

The generation gap was abundantly clear when a plucky 12-year-old school girl from Dimbulah lost her locks at a World’s Greatest Shave event on Sunday. Local hairdresser Jade Sheppard was midway through shaving her cousin Meg Chynoweth’s head in the courtyard of Canzian’s Restaurant and Bar when a heckle rang out from a member of the 100-strong crowd. ‘Look it’s [bald Irish singer-songwriter] Sinead O’Connor’, the heckler said. “Who is that? I think it is more the Miley Cyrus look,” Meg fired back. Sunday afternoon’s event marked the end of almost two months of fund-raising by the Grade 8 student
from Dimbulah State School. Before the big shave, Meg had already raised more than $2600 for the Leukaemia Foundation – significantly more than her starting goal of $1000. Prior to going under the clippers, Meg spoke to The Express and said hopefully after the event the tally would well exceed $3000. When asked why there were so many colourfulhaired school aged children at the event, Meg said it wasn’t the latest in Dimbulah fashion it was the result of a fund-raiser put on at her school. “School put on a crazy hair day for me to help with my fund-raising,” she said with her own long-hair dyed red and separated by a series of hair ties. “Everyone in the whole community has been really supportive of me, except for some of my friends,” she
Theatre upgrade will be a relief to actors By Boyd Robertson

The Tableland’s theatre buffs will be in for even bigger and better shows after upgrades to Malanda’s Majestic Theatre. The Heritage-listed theatre’s notoriously cramped wings will be extended into the old change rooms, while new crew facilities will be built at the back of the structure. These include new change rooms and a green room, plus toilets so actors no longer have to wait out an entire performance before relieving themselves. The upgrade works complement repairs to the theatre’s old leaky roof, which let water drip into the audience seating area on rainy nights. The total cost of the project is about
$400,000 and is being paid for by the Malanda Theatre Group Company, Tablelands Regional Council (TRC), the Community Benefit Gambling Fund and the Federal Government’s Building Multicultural Communities Program. Gill Harrington, who is directing upcoming production Anything Goes, said the upgrades would make work easier for cast and crew. “Previously the cast had to hold it until the entire audience had left before they could visit the toilets – it was a nightmare,” she said. “You’d have 30 people crammed up against each other in the wings, people bumping into each other and tripping over each other in the dark.” Malanda Theatre Group president

joked as a mate walked into the restaurant. Meg said she wasn’t nervous or worried about losing her hair but was more concerned about the everswelling crowd that flocked to Canzian's to witness the event. Proud mother Rae Chynoweth said Meg had been inspired to do something this year to honour the brave struggle of Indie Rose Taurima. Indie Rose is the daughter of former Mareeba local Jennifer Smith who looks destined to lose a long battle with Infant Acute Lympoblastic Leukaemia. World’s Greatest Shave events are held across Australia between March 13 and 16. In 2014 more than 150,000 people like Meg will be sponsored to shave or colour their hair with proceeds going to the Leukaemia Foundation.

Grace Chapman said the community would benefit from the upgrades in the end. “What all this construction ultimately means is that we’re going to be able to have bigger and more complex shows with a higher number of performers,” she said. “For us, it’s about being able to give back to the community in the quality of the shows we put on and the entertainment we deliver.” The theatre was built in 1929 by the English family. The Building Multicultural Communities Program operated under the federal Department of Immigration and Citizenship and provided grants of up to $160,000 to develop multicultural projects around the country.

Economic slowdown hits TRC valuations Land values in Yungaburra, Malanda and Millaa Millaa were consistent with the previous valuation report in 2012. “Generally the residential market has held steady in the eastern parts of the Tablelands Regional Council local government area but the western towns recorded decreases in values influenced by quieter market conditions and the liquidation of Kagara,” the Valuer-General’s report on TRC land values said. Atherton Realty principal Rino Gava said the remoteness and lack of jobs in the more remote towns of the TRC had caused the huge decreases in land value. “The lack of employment opportunities especially in smaller towns and rural areas is al-
By Ryan Groube A decline in economic activity in the western towns of the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has been attributed to a sharp drop in land value. The latest land valuations, released by Valuer-General Neil Bray on March 12, showed that overall land values across the TRC have dropped by 6.3 per cent since 2012. Values in Ravenshoe and Herberton copped the biggest hit with overall reductions of 20 and 10 per cent respectively. The median value of residential land in Atherton for 2126 properties dropped 4.8 per cent from $104,000 in 2012 to $99,000 in 2014.
the area known locally as the “Golden Triangle’. Despite the widespread drops, Mr Gava said it wasn’t all bad news and that the lower values could stimulate the market. “The release of these figures is a positive step to improving affordability and encouraging buyers to feel more confident in the current values,” he said. “We have a higher percentage of locals looking to buy than we have seen for some time which indicates a wider recognition of good value for money under current prices. “The reduction in rateable values can only assist in further stabilising the market and improving buyer confidence.” A copy of the valuation list will be available at the DNRM, 25 Mabel Street Atherton.
ways an issue, couple this with the economic downturn nationally, and the affect in lack of buyer confidence is doubled,” he said. “As a result, we have seen less buyer demand for lifestyle and rural properties especially those further away from Tableland towns due to higher travel costs. “Overall, the lower demand is reflected in the softening of the TRC land values for some rural and rural residential areas.” Multi-unit residential, industrial, commercial, rural residential and rural land also saw overall land value reductions of between four and eight per cent. Within the rural sector however there was strong demand for ‘good red arable soils’ from
Land values rise in MSC By Ryan Groube
Falling values for residential land in the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) has been offset by huge increases in the industrial and commercial sectors, new valuations show. On March 12, Valuer-General Neil Bray released the 2014 annual statutory land valuations for 41 local government areas in Queensland. The valuations take effect from June 2014 and are a key element for local councils in setting rates for the 2014-15 financial year. Overall, land values within the MSC rose by 0.5 per cent – one of only seven shires across Queensland to record an increase.
The value of industrial and commercially zoned land, the bulk of which is located in Mareeba, recorded increases of up to 70 per cent since the previous valuation in 2012. Mareeba outperformed the other areas of the shire with all property types recording an overall increase of 5.7 per cent. Residential land values in Mareeba dropped 2.6 per cent with multi-unit blocks near the town centre retaining their value, while fringe blocks fell away. Sales in rural precincts bordering Mareeba; including Bilwon, Emerald Creek, Granite Creek and Chewko showed growth of up to 20 per cent. Residential land values in Kuranda dropped
by 5.1 per cent from a median of $117,000 in 2012 to 111,000. Dimbulah’s residential land values remained steady. Land values are determined by a team of regionally based assessors in the State Valuation Service who fall under the Department of Natural Resources and Mines. “A market survey report for a local government area details the sales of land in the area since the last valuation was made and the probable impact of the sales on the value of land in an area,” Valuer-General Bray said. “In addition, valuers also consider the types of issues that impact on the value of the land such as the state of the economy, the effects of the mining
boom, commodity prices and population growth.” Rogato Bros Real Estate Principal Aurelia Rogato said the latest valuations showed the resilience of property values in the area. “It’s only a minor drop and market is active with strong buyer interest,” she said. “The market in Mareeba will continue to sustain stable growth as it has always done.” Mr Bray said landowners who believed their valuation was incorrect, and could provide supporting information, could lodge an objection at www.dnrm.qld.gov.au A hard copy of the valuation list for the MSC area can be viewed at the MSC office at Rankin Street.

Crime will resurface without intervention By Ryan Groube A panel of law and order experts has warned that without ongoing funding support for programs aimed at reducing youth crime the problem will resurface on the Tableland. In early 2012, juvenile crime rates in Mareeba exploded with homes and businesses bearing the brunt of a series of acts of vandalism. In March of that year, police from the Mareeba District Criminal Investigation Branch charged juvenile offenders with 142 property related offences. The panel, speaking at Member for Cook David Kempton’s Mareeba Community Priority Forum on March 14, said government funded programs had helped reduce youth crime since 2012. Among those programs was the installation of closed circuit television cameras in Byrnes Street, youth programs administered by the PCYC, and
homelessness programs, Street to Home and A Place to Call Home. The panel included: Acting Tablelands Inspector Richard Trotter, Officer in Charge of Mareeba Station Derek Garner, Mareeba Shire Council youth support officer Michael Haendel and Mareeba Community Housing Association manager Patricia Goldfinch. Ms Goldfinch said homelessness in Mareeba wasn’t people sleeping on the streets like in major cities but rather “severe overcrowding” in homes. She said youngsters living in one or two bedroom apartments would often be driven out onto the streets because there were too many people crammed in at home. Since Street to Home and A Place to Call Home began in Mareeba in 2011, the programs have helped 548 people into housing. “These programs provide specific support to our most vulnerable people and our funding runs out in
Mareeba Community Priority Forum
June,” Ms Goldfinch said. The panel said the lack of funding certainty for programs that had shown attributable results was something that State and Federal Government needs to address. Mayor Tom Gilmore, who was one of 85 people who attended the forum said: “Government needs to break the cycle of ‘on again, off again’ funding programs.” “If a program has demonstrated it is successful and useful there has got to be continuity in those funding arrangements.” Former deputy mayor of the Tablelands Regional Council Evan McGrath – who was instrumental in securing funding for the CCTV cameras in Byrnes Street – said the reduction in youth crime since 2012 had been remarkable. “Every morning I go for a walk through town at about 4.30am and a few years ago I would see 20 or 25 kids in the street every morning this year I have
only seen four kids and that was only on one occasion,” he said. “The work that these people [administering these programs] are doing is incredible.” Mr Kempton was presented with nine letters of support for the continued funding for Street to Home and A Place to Call Home. The State MP said it was pleasing to see the situation had improved over the past two years but recognised the need for the programs to continue. “You can’t just cut funding for the sake of cutting funding. I don’t accept that,” he said. "I will be working with council and service providers to make sure there is continuity for these programs.” Acting Inspector Trotter said even at the height of the juvenile crime spree the crime rate on the Tableland was insignificant compared to many parts of Australia. “This is still a very good place to live and people should feel safe and comfortable living in the Mareeba Shire,” he said.
Voicing opinions on disability By Ryan Groube
Liza Jones and Pina Low.
On March 14, 84 locals took the opportunity to have their say on where they see Mareeba in the next five years. Liza Jones was among them. An employee of the Mareeba District Flexi Support Association, Ms Jones was asked by the service providers’ management committee to attend the Mareeba Community Priority Forum as their representative. Ms Jones said she had been impressed with the forum which was organised by Member for Cook David Kempton to provide a “blueprint” for the aspirations of the community. “Everyone here seems to be on the same page with wanting the same things and it is clear that everyone wants the best for Mareeba,” she said.
Wheelchair bound, Ms Jones said a major issue for her was the need for improved access to buildings for people with a disability. She said while the issue wasn’t as broadly appealing as things like transport and health care it was still something that mattered to a lot of people. “I just hoped that it doesn’t end here and the priorities that the community have raised today are seen through,” she said. “I also hope that those priorities that don’t come out on top aren’t completely forgotten about.” Ms Jones said she had also been disappointed at the lack of representation at the forum from some sections of the community. She said it would have been nice to see more low income earners and more families represented.

Phone Dave on 0439 759 163 By Ryan Groube IMPROVED road and primary industry infrastructure and better sport and recreation facilities are the key short-term aspirations for the Mareeba community. On March 14, Member for Cook David Kempton and Mareeba Chamber of Commerce hosted the Mareeba Community Priority Forum to establish a “high-level blueprint” for the town for the next five years. About 85 people attended the four-hour forum at the Mareeba United Football Club. The core component was a “brain storming” session where in small groups attendees wrote the key priorities for the region on a piece of butchers paper. “I want to know what you want [the electorate of Cook] to look like in five years time and what is needed to get there,” he said. The Express observed the brainstorming session at a table consisting of Sam Musumeci, Gilbert Teitzel, Ron Blundell, Marc Sleeman, Rebecca Roy, Di Pregl, Rob Macalister and Eddie Phillips. Consistent with almost all 12 groups, the first item that was discussed was the need to
improve road access to the coast for tourists and heavy vehicles by upgrading the Kuranda Range Road. The group also discussed the need to place a greater emphasis of promoting the Mareeba Shire as a great place to live and backing that promotion up with adequate social and sporting infrastructure. After about 15 minutes, each paper was plastered on the wall and attendees were asked to vote, using a red dot, on their top three issues. Mr Kempton said he will have the information collated into a report within the week and will present the findings to the State Government. “This report will act as a high-level blueprint of where we want this community to go,” he said. “Through this process we have engaged the community and got a mandate from the community.” Mr Kempton said he was happy with the turnout and diversity of attendees but said it was clear that some sectors of the community were under-represented. The forum was well attended by business
and community leaders as well as representatives of service organisations and Indigenous groups. There was an obvious lack of representation from people from low socio-economic demographics, people aged 30 and under, and families. Mr Kempton said the forum had been open to all but he did accept that more work needed to be done to hear the aspirations from other sections of the community. “This [forum] is far from the end of it. There is still time and opportunity for broader community consultation,” he said. The forum began at 9am and included a presentation from a law and order panel which provided an update on youth crime. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president and farmer Joe Moro gave a presentation about the issues affecting the agricultural and business commonties. There were also speeches from Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore, local councillor Alan Pedersen and Lakeland farmer Peter Inderbitzin.

This first community newsletter is an opportunity to introduce the council and Mr Peter Franks, the new CEO of the Mareeba Shire. I intend that this newsletter will provide a running commentary on issues, challenges and good news as we tackle the development of a new shire. This is an exciting time for us all, to bring this all together in a timely manner, to build confidence both in the council and in the community that our plans and strategies will ultimately lead to the Mareeba Shire being strong and viable for the long term. This is a new organisation, requiring careful analysis of every aspect of what we do and how we do it, to clearly define the levels of service that we provide to the community and to ensure that everything that we do is efficient and cost effective. To that end, we will in the immediate future begin a two pronged process of a bottom up analysis of the organisation and a long term financial sustainability program; both of which will provide important input into the budget which we will deliver in June.

Innovative thinking paid off for Keith with award and speeding up erosion on its banks. The farmers along the creek who had built contour banks on their land the combat erosion like Keith were also adding to the problem. After researching water-sensitive urban design, Keith commissioned environmental scientist Joe Rhodes to design a structure that would slow down runoff from his farm into the creek and attempt to return it to pre-development levels. Mr Rhodes produced a design for a ’detention basin’, basically a holding pond constructed at the funnel point of Mr Goulds farm that allowed water to slowly seep through a barrier of crushed rock and join the watercourse leisurely. Although Mr Gould knew that by himself he wouldn’t have much effect on the creek, he began to tell other farmers in the area about the concept of ’slowing the flow’ and is pleased to say it did not go unheeded. “You can tell farmers something all you like and they won’t take much notice if they’re not interested,” he said. “But they do watch each other and if they see if something works with their own eyes, then they will take notice.” Another 10 farmers around the area have now followed Mr Gould’s example and built detention basins to slow down the water they discharge into creeks. For this and his other advocacy works over the years Mr Gould was nominated anonymously for Barron Catchment Care’s Helen Adams award, named for a local environmental sustainability pioneer. Barron Catchment Care co-ordinator Margaret Barker said Mr Gould fit the profile for the award perfectly. “It was a pretty easy decision that Keith was deserving of the award,” Mrs Barker said. Now in its 20th year, Barron Catchment care works on revegetation in addition to pest, land and water management all along the river’s catchment, taking Mareeba, Atherton, Kuranda and Lake Tinaroo.
By Boyd Robertson An environmentally-minded Atherton farmer has been awarded for his long-term advocacy of sustainable development. Former forestry manager Keith Gould (pictured) has owned his 27-hectare property just outside Atherton for 41 years, variously raising fruit orchards, potatoes, custard apples and cattle over the years. On Tuesday he was granted the Helen Adams award by environmental organisation Barron Catchment Care for constantly advocating for sustainable development with his fellow farmers and for substantial efforts to make his own farm as sustainable as possible. Thanks to his background in forestry, Mr Gould understood the importance of having mature, healthy trees on his farm. When he first took over the property in the 1970s it was heavily eroded. Mr Gould went against standard thinking at the time – which encouraged mass clearing of vegetation using axes and fire – and planted a substantial buffer zone along his roughly kilometre-long frontage with Mazlin Creek, in addition to windbreaks elsewhere around the property. He also built a series of contour banks so all the rainwater on his property was funnelled into a single point that discharged into Mazlin Creek. Although this strategy helped cut down on erosion on his farmland, after a decade or two he began to notice the mature trees he had planted as seedlings were toppling one-by-one into Mazlin Creek. He realized that as the town of Atherton had expanded, council engineers had promoted the use of gutter downpipes that transferred water from resident’s rooftops directly into Mazlin Creek, increasing the speed and volume of its flow
Keith Gould has been recognised for his long-term commitment to sustainable land practice.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift sheds light on how we can keep Far North Queensland kids sun safe with appropriate shade!
Far North Queensland kids need to keep it shady Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and with more than 150 Far North Queenslanders being diagnosed with melanoma alone each year, it’s a worry to think that inadequate shade may be putting our kids at risk. Research by the Australian Radiation Protection, Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and Cancer Council found that insufficient shade structures at pools, playgrounds and parks may be putting Queensland kids at increased risk of skin cancer. The study found very few shade structures surveyed at toddler wade pools in swimming centres around Melbourne offered sufficient sun protection (defined as Protection Factor (PF 15)). Although the study was conducted in Victoria, lead researcher Peter Gies said the results were applicable to Queensland. Cancer Council Queensland has called on State and local governments to ensure all outdoor recreational areas in Queensland have adequate shade cover to best protect children from the sun. We know that proper sun protection during childhood reduces lifetime
risk of skin cancer – so we need to do this right. Whether it’s a permanent structure, demountable shade, awnings, shade sails or portable shade – we need to ensure public shade in Far North Queensland offers sufficient sun protection all year round. Seeking shade can reduce your overall UV exposure by up to 75 per cent – it’s not 100 per cent protection, so even if you spend the day in the shade, it’s vital you also Slip on protective clothing, Slop on SPF30 or above broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat and Slide on wrap-around sunnies when out and about. Queensland has record UV levels, so it’s crucial Far North Queenslanders use all forms of sun protection, including seeking shade year round! There are no shortcuts. Take care in preparation for outdoor activity and remember that one method of protection is never enough! More information about Cancer Council Queensland and being SunSmart is available at www. cancerqld.org.au or via the Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20.

MSS used as example for students Free Milo
Students from the Remote Area Teaching Program visited Mareeba State School last week.
By Boyd Robertson A group of Indigenous education students looked to Mareeba State School (MSS) as an example to follow during a visit last Friday. The group of 29 mature-age teaching students were part of the Remote Area Teaching Program (RATEP) and hailed from all over Queensland. They toured the school, spoke to teachers and staff in on- classes teaching 1 4and 7 9sat 5 3 1 2to 0observe 1 4 - 0 3 - 1
firsthand. MSS was chosen as an example school due to its good student scores, high proportion of Indigenous students and use of the ‘explicit teaching’ method. Co-ordinator Paul Halliday from TAFE Cairns heaped praise on MSS and principal Shirlee Gallo after the visit. “They were really outstanding – Mareeba State School is a showcase of the curriculum, explicit 2 T 1 5teaching : 3 0 and : 3 student 3 + 1 behaviour 0 : 0 0 and we go to

Mareeba for that reason,” he said. “The quality of the teaching and the way that school is run by Shirlee is extremely impressive – she devotes time for her students and has a team approach, so they all look out for each other. It was a really good opportunity for our first-year students to have a real-world example of how thing should be done in the classroom.” Mr Halliday said it was vital to the future of Queensland to have quality regional teachers, particularly in areas where a high proportion of people were of Aboriginal descent. “The better teachers we have in our communities’ schools, the better those communities are going to develop and prosper,” he said. “When it comes to educating indigenous teachers – if you look at Shirlee and her team, they have ownership in their community so they’re part of it and that is something we’re trying to instil in our own students at RATEP.”

lures kids to library By Boyd Robertson
A volunteer-run learning group at Mareeba State School (MSS) is continuing its success. The ‘Learning Café’ is operated in MSS’s library from 8.30 to 9am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and allows students to read or catch up on homework. A total of about 150 kids per week participate in the café, which is operated by a collection of teachers, parents and community volunteers. MSS head of curriculum Valerie Dayes said the café was an excellent opportunity for students to improve their reading skills. “The kids that come to the café are the ones that love reading, but we’re always looking at and trying to evaluate other kids’ reading abilities – for the ones that aren’t doing so well we often encourage them to come in to the library in the mornings to read in this environment.” Year 6 student Claudia Savaglio, 11, has been attending the café for some time. “There’s always enough grown-ups here in the mornings so sometimes I help out and show other kids what some words mean,” she said. “I love to read – my favourite books are probably ones by Roald Dahl.” While the school doesn’t formally track any correlation between attending the café and academic results, Ms Dayes said it could only have a positive impact on student learning. She also admitted that food bribery might play a part in the café’s success. “Each student that comes along to Learning Café gets a free Milo and every tenth time they show up we give them a cupcake – that‘s probably why it‘s so popular,” she said with a laugh. “We are always looking for donations of milk to keep making the Milos, because it can actually get pretty expensive.”

Misleading headline
Don’t be misled by the headline “Turbines cause no ill health” The Express, March 6, page five. The National Health and Medical Research Council study on wind turbines that this newspaper reported on did not say there was no harm to health. The article headline should have been ‘NHMRC calls for more research into the health effects of wind turbines.’ This research is also what the 2011 Senate Inquiry recommended as a priority. The only Australian research worthy of consideration by the study committee shows adverse health effects are being experienced out to 10 kilometres from large scale industrial wind turbines. This is hardly the “clean bill of health” that Mt Emerald Wind Farm developer Ratch Australia is claiming. It’s time to get on with the necessary health research.

Justice for Morcombe
Congratulations must go to the jury in the trial of Daniel Morcombe’s killer. Without being told the prior criminal history of the defendant, they were able to digest hours of evidence and differentiate the facts from the fiction. My argument is that in a court case, the prosecution is required to disclose its evidence and names of witnesses it intends to call, to the defence team, prior to the trial. The defence does not have to do this. The prosecution can not divulge the accused’s prior records of convictions, previous sentences, mental problems or recorded addictions such as paedophilia. In this case, the accused has a long list of serious, similar prior incidences. Why was he still walking around free? The law seems to be in support of the perpetrators and firmly against anyone who tries to change this situation.

The Streets of Your Town You drive past them every day, but do you ever wonder what they are? The trees along the streets of your town, that is? Don’t you just love the approach into Atherton from the north. It’s glorious emerging from the Tolga Scrub and looking out across the rolling green hills to Atherton. And as you drive down the hill to Mazlin Creek the road is lined with manicured clumps of plants, some flowering, some covered in bright new growth – a lovely entrance to a lovely town.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Lions Youth of the Year quest. Caitlyn Long was awarded the public speaking prize, and also won the Youth of the Year Award. Well done Caitlyn. This annual event has been run by Mareeba Lions for many years. Caitlyn joins a long list of winners of the local quest including Chairman of the judging panel Mr Ron Blake who was himself a local winner who went on to compete at the National Finals. Caitlyn was awarded with the Warren Currie memorial shield at the event held at the Mareeba RSL on the March 1, 2014. Mareeba LIONS got down and dirty recently to Clean up Australia. Helped by a enthusiastic band of Scouts, Cubs, Joeys and the Taekwondo Asc the LIONS cleared the Bicentennial Lakes of a large ute load of shopping trolleys, needles, condoms, beer bottles, cans, paper, plastic, etc including a bag of cured cement. Even with all these volunteers actively picking up rubbish a person fed the ducks and stuffed three plastic bread bags into the fork of a tree! The Mareeba Lions Club will be holding its
second Family Fun Metrogaine from the Heritage Centre on the 15th June to raise money for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. Please come along and support this worthwhile cause. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion. F.I.F.O. workers should consider LIONS as a way to maintain social contact with their peers. So what are the plants in these handsome clumps? First and foremost, the plants are all native plants of our region, chosen to showcase our world heritage wet tropics flora, and selected for their dense habit and well-shaped form, attractive flowers and lovely foliage. So there’s actually not a lot of manicuring takes place since the plants are naturally well-shaped. Flowering right at the moment is the Ivory Curl Tree (Buckinghamia celsissima), popular in gardens throughout eastern Australia. But did you know that it actually comes from the rainforests at our back door (including the mountains of Danbulla and the Herberton Range)? Then there’s the beautiful Little Evodia (Melicope rubra), a host plant for the electric-blue Ulysses Butterfly. It bears masses of pink-purple flowers along its branches, followed by juicy citrus fruit containing small black seeds. Honeyeaters can’t help themselves when presented with such a feast of nectar and seeds. The Brown Gardenia (Atractocarpus fitzalanii) has been included in most of the clumps because of its strong structural form, its tidy neat shape, and large glossy green leaves, plus lots of white perfumed gardenia flowers. This plant is found throughout the wet tropics from Cooktown to Townsville. The Cape Plum (Flacourtia sp) is covered in bright maroon new growth right at the moment. This is one of the real gems of Cape York rainforests, with its beautiful rounded shape and gorgeous new growth, and is a host plant for the orange Australian Rustic Butterfly. The clumps contain a range of other plants including the Golden Penda (Xanthostemon chrysanthus), a rather plain-looking plant until it bursts into flower and is covered with wonderful fluffy yellow flowers. Like the Ivory Curl, the Golden Penda is so popular in gardens throughout the country that it’s origin in our local rainforests is often forgotten. A local plant to make us all very proud. Talking about local plants, take a drive into the centre of town, where you can see the beautiful Atherton Oak (Athertonia diversifolia) flowering its head off right now. Don’t miss it. Go have a look – it’s a really special plant. And a fitting name-sake for a beautiful town.
Happy gardening, and see you at Yuruga!

Lack of electricity a ‘cancer’ By Ryan Groube For those who shudder at the sight of mail emblazoned with the Ergon Energy logo, spare a thought for the residents of the Daintree. On March 13, Ergon Energy released a 32-page document with preliminary costings for providing electricity to 237 customers in Cape Tribulation, Diwan, Cow Bay, Forest Creek and Kimberley. Ergon Energy looked at two options, A and B, which ranged between $40 and $45 million with a cost of connection per household of between $169,000 or $187,000, respectively. The State Government has ruled out assisting with funding while the Federal Government remains supportive of the push but noncommittal in setting aside money for the works. Matt Wendon, the owner of Cape Tribulation’s Whet Cafe, Bar and Restaurant said without assistance the figures quoted by Ergon weren’t just beyond the Daintree community “they are beyond any community”. “The reality is that our economy up here is being kept poor in large part due to the lack of a power supply,” he said. “As a business owner I burn through 700 litres of diesel every week and I look at an annual cost of my power of about $40,000. “Our communities pay our taxes and do all the other things that are required of everyone else but we don’t have access to the same services.” Even if the community could privately fund these power stations and the infrastructure to deliver it to their properties they would not be entitled to regulated tariffs, electricity industry standards – including entitlement to capital contributions – or minimum service levels. Queensland Energy Minister Mark McArdle reiterated that the State Government “is not in a position to fund” the infrastructure needed to provide the Daintree with electricity. “These high level cost estimates and concept plans

can be used by locals as the basis for a community-driven private sector tender to develop new supply facilities,” Mr McArdle said. “Ergon has worked hard to develop these plans and I’ve asked Ergon to now provide technical direction and advice in a handover of these supply options to any tenderers or developers that may become involved. “It was the Newman government that in late 2012 repealed Labor’s Daintree Policy that for 20 years prevented the building of any electricity infrastructure in the area and effectively forced every resident to have their own generator.” Member for Cook David Kempton said that should a tendering process begin it was more likely the costs for Daintree residents would

increase. “It is important to note these cost estimate and concept plans are high level, with costs likely to increase as more detailed scoping is undertaken during any tender phase,” Mr Kempton said. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said the Ergon Energy report “isn’t worth the paper it is printed on”. Talking with The Express, the Federal MP said he had only had a night to peruse the report and could already “blow holes in this 100 different ways”. He said the biggest and most alarming flaw was that Ergon Energy did their costings based on the number of people who had formally requested an electricity supply.

Mr Entsch said basing costings on 237 customers when there are 779 lots in the area and 70 businesses, not 30 was ‘rubbish’. He said if you factor in all of those people the cost per connection would drop substantially. “This report seems to have had the intent on generating the highest possible cost,” he said. “I will be asking for an independent review of this report complete with other alternatives.” Mr Entsch said the lack of electricity in the Daintree had been a “cancer” on the community for far too long and admitted that the Federal Government had a role to play. He did concede however that “financially we [the Government] are in all sorts of problems” and that there was no guarantee of Federal funding.

Tourism book launched
Yungaburra’s strangler fig will be used to entice tourists to the Tableland as the latest Discover visitor guide hits the shelves of information centres across the east coast in time for Easter. Michael Trout, chairman of Tropical Tablelands Tourism (TTT) and member for Barron River, launched the annual tourism publication at Crystal Caves in Atherton on Tuesday. He said each year a different iconic Tableland location was selected to grace the cover of the 54 page glossy magazine, published annually by TTT. Each year 150,000 copies find their way as far afield as Cooktown, Mackay, Karumba, Mt Isa and Barcaldine, and consumer travel shows Australia wide as well as information centres in the North Queensland region. “The Tablelands receives 500,000 visitors every year and we want them to discover every part of this amazing and diverse region,” he said. “We want Discover [magazine] to be potential travellers’ first point of contact and in the process
highlight just how easy it is to reach the Atherton Tablelands from anyone of these other key regional destinations.”

Leadership for ladies
Leadership School for young ladies, improving personal skills, developing friendships, crafts and having a country of study are all some of the benefits of being part of the QCWA Younger Leaders.
QCWA State President, Robyn McFarlane said, the Country Women’s Association (CWA) provided a unique opportunity for young ladies aged between 10 and 25 to develop their interpersonal skills. “Having a young leader group where you have the opportunity to develop a sense of community will set you up for adulthood,” she said. For the past 50 years young leader groups from across Queensland converge in one location for five days during the September school holidays. Ms McFarlane said it was the highlight of the calendar year when these young people had a chance to meet other likeminded ladies who were keen to further their community mindedness. “These young ladies have a chance to learn from the QCWA, as many experienced ladies are passing on their knowledge and skills to enhance these young lives,” she said. “Many of our QCWA ladies at branch level bring with them skills from their professional jobs before they joined the QCWA. “So we are very fortunate that we have incredible skill levels to call on to benefit our future Young Leaders and our Association.” QCWA Young Leader Group, State Leader, Miss Serenette Crombie said personal skills was developed to mirror real life covered with public speaking, debating, music drama, meeting procedure, chairmanship, secretarial, treasurer, dressmaking and cookery skills. “There has been a lot of interest in The Young Leader Group so a promotional flyer has started to circulate to all the CWA branches in Queensland,” she said. “Primarily the girls want to have ‘fun’, and with that comes friendships, learning to work in groups, community involvement through Young Leader Group activities. “We even provide competitions in the areas of cooking, craft, dressmaking, public speaking and debating. “It’s not about winning. It’s about participation and enjoying a challenge. “Our Young Leader Groups also promotes International tolerance and understanding through the QCWA Country of Study.” For more information contact the State Leader of the QCWA Young Leaders, Serenette Crombie or Deputy Leader Samantha Murrell at serenettecrombie@hotmail.com

Poor crop but no need to panic
Atherton avocado grower Jim Kochi says a 50 per cent smaller avocado crop in Mareeba this season is no reason to panic. By Boyd Robertson This year’s Mareeba avocado crop is predicted to be about half the size of 2013’s, but the rest of the Tableland is on track for a regular season. Cold, dry weather during flowering last year is blamed for the reduction in crop size, with a notable decrease in the amount of smaller fruit going to market predicted for Mareeba crops. Despite the grim news, Australian Avocados chairman Jim Kochi, based at Atherton, said nobody was panicking yet. “We knew we were going to get crop levels like this a good 12 months ago because the industry does extensive forecasting,” he said. “What we’re most likely going to see is that there will be less smaller grades of fruit going to market – the smaller grades obviously get a lower price than larger fruit.” “We’re also looking at an average price rise of between $5 and $8 per tray, so about a 20 per cent price rise across the board.” However Paddys Green farmer Anthony Carusi said that a price rise wouldn’t make up for the smaller crop. “Usually a price rise in this kind of situation isn’t enough to compensate for a crop that is down – so it is a worrying thing,” said Mr Carusi, who grows both
limes and avocados. “This year might be worse than any other.” Avocados are the second-largest crop for the Tableland’s largest farm company, Howe Farming, based at Walkamin. Spokesman James Howe said the company was also expecting a smaller harvest this season but did not consider it a crisis. “As far as Shepards are concerned we are looking at a crop that is down about 30 or 40 per cent this year,” Mr Howe said. “The price is agreeable and that basically offsets it, so it’ll be business as usual for us. “One thing we’ll be trying to do is improve our care and efficiency at harvest and focus on reducing the amount of wastage we encounter thanks to stings.” Mr Kochi was confident that Avocados Australia's new online forecasting tool, called ‘Infocado’, provides enough data for growers to effectively market their fruit. “Basically Infocado gets growers to submit a rolling 3-week forecast of their crop data to the main database,” he said. “It’s got about two years of solid data behind it now so growers can be pretty confident in knowing supply levels – it means they can decide to send or not send their fruits to certain markets. “Previously they had to go on the word of a wholesaler in one of the big cities that

may or may not have had the big picture of what’s going on.” Most Tableland growers are about a month away from the end of their Shepard avocado crop, with the Hass variety due for picking in May-June. Avocados are considered to be one of the Tableland’s ‘big three’
fruit crops, the other two being bananas and mangoes. With about 80 growers operating in the region, each year an average 11,000 tons of avocados are grown on the Tableland, bringing in about $30 million annually. Mareeba farms are considered to
be the northernmost growers of avocados and begin picking before anyone else in the country. The fruit is prized for its nutritional value, with diverse fats and high amounts of fibre, potassium and folate, while containing zero cholesterol.

The LAND Farming movie nights
A series of films produced by Australian farmers will be screened across the Tableland. FOREIGN farming practices will be showcased in a series of movie nights that will be held across the Tableland from March 21. Last year, 17 Australian farmers went on a ‘study tour’ of Mexico, Costa Rica and Ecuador to see how farms were finding new practices to mitigate rising input costs, water charges and declining soil health. During these trips three short films were made which will be coming to screens across the Tableland in March and April. Co-founding director of RegenAG Kym Kruse, who went on the trips, said seeing firsthand how other countries were dealing with similar problems faced in Australia was “significant”.
“They are facing many of the same pressures our farmers are facing, without protection through tariffs…”, Mr Kruse said. Mr Kruse said he hoped farming communities across the Tableland would pick and choose the element that foreign farms were doing well and implement them locally. The films will be shown at Dimbulah Memorial Hall on March 21, Merrilands Hall, Atherton on March 22, Innisfail Shire Hall on March 28 and Kuranda Trading Post on March 29. April screenings will be held at the Mareeba RSL on April 1, James Cook University on April 4 and Mossman Shire Hall on April 5. All screenings run from 6.30pm to 9pm and entry is via gold coin donation.

There are few rules in the accessible category as we want people to participate, have fun and do the best they can.” says Shannon Telley of FNQ Cerebral Palsy Support Group. “We support a number of children with physical disabilities in our communities and this event epitomizes what we strive for: active participation and fun for everyone regardless of age or ability.”
The second round of the Mareeba Basketball competition played last week saw both Stingrays and Eurostars maintain their undefeated record in Senior Mens fixtures. Both sides registered comfortable wins over Comets Young Guns and Topshots respectively. Certainly an excellent encounter should eventuate this Tuesday night when these unbeaten teams clash during the third round of fixtures. In the Senior Ladies division, Baiada
Steggles and Gummaz continued on their winning ways. With the young High School Divas side recording a good 11 points win over Killers. Closely contested Under 16’s Junior fixtures resulted in Scorpians gaining a 1 point win over All Stars. While Warriors were winners over Phoenix also by a single point. The other fixture proved a keen contest between Panthers and Timberwolves with Panthers

By Alex Srhoj MUFC president In 2013, the Mareeba Bulls reannounced ourselves as heavyweights of the local soccer competition. This season we are hoping to build on that success across all grades from our ankle-biters in the Under 6 side right up to our mighty Premier League team. Onwards and upwards is the direction the club is moving. We have made some big changes across our junior development structure, giving our junior base a strong and healthy competition to develop along the same pathways that our Cairns-based competitors already have access to. All grades have had a really strong pre-season which came to a successful end with the

Mazda Cup tournament held in Mareeba at the weekend. Our player numbers are up right across our junior ranks as are our senior numbers. All of our teams are well prepared for the season and can't wait to run out in front of the Borzi Park faithful for the season proper. This year I return as the coach of the A Grade side but I am fortunate to be surrounded by a strong leadership group of experienced old heads. Marchello Savaglio is taking the reins of the Reserves who have a number of quality players who will spend the season pushing for selection in the top division. It has been really pleasing to see a good group of girls turning up to train with our Lady Bulls. It has been a tough couple of season for the ladies due

to a lack of numbers but with a strong squad mentored by coach Mario Ghensi there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about season 2014. Club stalwart Ronnie Leporati will no doubt feel every ache and pain in his body as the coach of the hungry and talented Mareeba youth team. Off the field the club has also made huge strides in the past couple of years. It is our first priority as a community club to ensure that our members and those visiting our great club come to an atmosphere that is safe, welcoming and enjoyable. I have also been pleased by the growing reputation our club is gathering around the community as a top-tier function hall. and weddings. The success of our function hall means the club has a solid revenue base that will serve us well into the future. There is a huge sense of optimism across all levels of our club that 2014 is our year to make our mark on the FNQ Football competition. State league talent to bolster Mareeba > Star power: Wayne Srhoj, Anthony Mete, Victor Madrid, Kane Alderton, Robert Pendenza, Steven Cater, Paul Ruiz, Shaun Owens, Larry Maggio and Alex Plowman all boast State or A League experience and will be key to the Bulls success in 2014
On paper, the Mareeba Bulls have the most talented playing roster in the FNQ Football competition. Wayne Srhoj has A League experience while nine others were regular starters for the FNQ Bulls in the Queensland State League. Throw in a mix of exciting youngsters and the Bulls are perfectly placed for an assault on competition silverware in 2014. Form and fitness of the following players will be key for the Bulls in 2014. Victor Madrid (C) Mr Bull himself. This season will most likely be the captain's last year in the orange and black before he hangs up his boots. Known mainly as a defender, Madrid will be given more freedom in 2014 as a general in the Bulls midfield. Leads by example and in a team of stars he remains the talisman. Wayne Srhoj Mr A-League. Where do we start? Having returned home from professional football in 2012, the Mareeba junior will be hoping to lead his be-
loved Bulls to glory in 2014. Player of the year for the Bulls and the league in 2013, Srhoj is the Rolls Royce of the Mareeba Bulls team. Kane Alderton Mr Consistent. The Bulls rock in defence. Alderton is never beaten one-on-one and gives the Bulls great drive out of defence. A critical, if sometimes overlooked, cog for the Bulls. Steven Cater The X Factor: Cater was arguably the standout
player for the Bulls during the preseason. He scored a hat trick against Innisfail in the first game of the Mazda Cup at the weekend. Hopefully a series of long-term injuries is behind the quick and skillful striker. Anthony Mete Last legs. The old man of the Bulls has returned for one final year with the orange and black. The former goalscoring chart topper and former state league striker will add some polish to the Bull's attack which was hit and miss in 2013.
Come and cheer on the Bulls this Saturday!

Alex Plowman Mareeba junior Alex Plowman has elected to transfer back home after playing with FNQ FC in the National Premier League last year. Plowman was a standout for FNQ FC last year playing in a defence constantly under siege. Will benefit from the help of former State League stars Alderton and Larry Maggio in defence.

MAREEBA GLADIATORS 2014 SEASON
By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Gladiators A Grade side enters the 2014 season with a new coach and some new blood against impressive opponents, but are ready for the coming challenge. Coach Cameron McPherson said his side will focus on play execution and defence for the season after their preseason defeat by the Atherton Roosters exposed weaknesses in those areas. McPherson also named his picks for the sides to beat this year, admitting it will be a difficult season ahead. “We’re going to be looking at improving the execution of our plays and some of our co-ordination in our defence,” McPherson said. “We were a bit inconsistent in the defence around the ruck when we went up against the Roosters. “It’s not just good enough to work on your plays because everyone in the league is using those plays – it’s about executing them better to achieve the results you want.”
McPherson named the Cairns Kangaroos as the main side to watch out for the 2014 season. “This year the Kangaroos will be a very strong team,” he said. “I think Innisfail and Ivanhoes are looking alright too.” McPherson added he would not worry about trying to top the achievements of previous coach Rod Jensen and that his ultimate goal is simply to improve his side as players and as a team. “At the end of the year I just want each player to be a better footballer,” he said. “Footy seasons are a marathon, not a sprint. “We’ll get our results and sum them up at the end of the year.” New A Grade players Joelyn Schmid and Matt Garness also bolster the ranks this year. Second-rower Schmid, a butcher by trade originally from Tully, said he was looking forward to playing with the team. “The Gladiators are a really good side, everyone’s pretty easygoing and nobody has big egos,” he said. “I reckon if we all put in, nothing’s going to stop us.”

McPherson's view By Cameron McPherson Mareeba Gladiators A Grade coach
It is a very exciting year for me personally being back coaching my home club and something I have thought about over the past few years a lot. The Mareeba Gladiators is the club that I have played for from when I was six-years-old and due to my long involvement is very special to me. I will be doing my best not to let my players, friends and supporters down this season. Obviously, at the moment we have some challenges in front of us with the departure of so many players to other clubs during the off season. It is important as a coach that I understand why these players have decided to leave and hopefully make
our club a place where this does not happen again. The big bonus we have now is that we are going to be able to start again and give a lot of young players a chance to show that they can be the backbone off the club for many years to come. I know there is some great potential in all of our teams at the moment and I am sure that we will see this turn into on-field performance through the year. I hope that our supporters will stay positive and patient because there are going to be some bumps along the way but what better way to show your support than to get over to Davies Park on Saturday night and cheer on all the grades against last year’s grand finalists Southern Suburbs.

MAREEBA GLADIATORS 2014 SEASON
Defending champs look for back to back crowns Kose also said the higher number of players would give him a versatile and varied final team, in addition to being able to start games with a full bench. “Having so many guys is really a bonus for me because I can pick out a good balance of older, more experienced players and put them in there with some of the new blood who are really keen,” he said. “It’s good to be able to cover all the bases.” This year’s team have the highest standard possible to play to, with last year’s team taking out the CDRL premiership, but are already on track to replicate that result after trouncing the formidable Roosters Reserves 4410 during preseason. Kose said he is implementing on a balanced training regimen focusing on ‘fitness and skills’ for the season.
Strength in numbers is the name of the game for the Mareeba Gladiators’ Reserves team this year, with a whopping roster of 32 players signed up in the wake of the side’s premiership win in 2013. New coach Tonga Kose said the high number of players will make competition for a spot in the 17 fierce. According to Kose, this will ensure only the most skilled and dedicated players will take to the field wearing a ‘Gators Reserves jersey. “Everyone is really going to be pushing themselves for one of those spots, so the competitiveness will be motivating each one,” Kose said. “The guys that try the hardest and put in the effort at training are going to be the guys that get those spots.”
FROM THE PRESIDENT... By John Arcidiacono Mareeba Gladiators president We have seen some big changes at the club during the off season but we enter the 2014 confident of success both on and off the field. Firstly, I would like to welcome the ‘Gators new A Grade coach Cameron McPherson who replaces Rod Jensen. Cameron is a local boy who played almost all his football with the ‘Gators and I am confident that he is the right person for the job. We have an entirely new coaching team in 2014. Tonga Kose has taken the reins of the Reserve Grade coach and got his tenure off to a great start with a win over Mossman/Port Douglas at the weekend. I know Tonga is very keen to deliver back-to-back CDRL Reserve Grade premierships to Mareeba.
Ricky Shave is our new Under 18s coach and, as a young player himself, has a great chance of growing the culture of our youngest grade. It has been a tough couple of seasons for the Under 18s but I expect them to make huge improvements this year under Ricky. We have also had a major shakeup of our committee. It is important the footy clubs have fresh blood come in to bring new ideas and perspectives. Andrew Foster has taken the position of treasurer with Barb Henning our new secretary. Tua Aue, Harry Phillott, Sione Takapu and Alo Toomalatai make up the rest of the committee. We have recently held our annual jersey night which continues to be well supported by members of the community and business. The ‘Gators are Mareeba’s club and we value the support we get from the community. Go the 'Gators!

MAREEBA GLADIATORS 2014 SEASON Speed trumps size for Gladiators U18s By Boyd Robertson
Mareeba Gladiators - U18s Squad
A fresh-faced Mareeba Gladiators Under 18s side will use their speed and agility to their advantage for the 2014 season, according to new coach Ricky Shave. Shave, 22, was in the side only four years ago, so he knows “how they like it done”. Shave will deviate from the Gladiators tradition of relying on large, powerful forwards and will instead look to utilize his young side’s speed during games. “On average the guys are smaller this year but they’re fast so we’re going to be trying to use that as much as we can,” he said. The side’s training will focus on skills that complement their mobility, with emphasis on passing techniques and dexterity. “We’re going to be looking at getting fast hands and fast feet, that’s what I’m trying to focus them on,” Shave said. Despite a 36-36 draw against the Atherton Roosters during preseason, Shave said he was confident in his side’s abilities. “We missed a couple of opportunities against Atherton – we should have won that game,” he said. “I’ve seen what these guys have to offer and I’m already very impressed.” The Under 18s side captain this year is Jack Archer, while Cue Tokarahi backs up Shave as assistant coach.

Bandits four from four in semi-finals By Ryan Groube
Mareeba’s cricketers are grand final bound after four wins from four semi-finals played across the far north at the weekend. The under 14s grand final will be an allMareeba affair with the David Thomas coached Mareeba Gold to meet Bomber Adam’s Mareeba Blue in the grand final. Twin centuries from Luke Lambourn and Chris Adams propelled Mareeba Blue to a comprehensive 181 run win over Tolgaboys in their semi. Mareeba Gold defeated Atherton South by 87 runs during their semi at Lodar Park, Atherton. Branden Green top scored for Mareeba Gold with 63 while Kyle Bing Chew made an enterprising 47 not out. Cross town rivals Mareeba and Atherton will face off in the Under 16s grand final this weekend after Mareeba defeated second-placed Cairns Rovers by 61 runs in their semi-final played in Cairns. Matthew Lep scored an important half century while Brendan Falvo made 42 for Mareeba. Zac Adams and Steve Harnischfeger were the standout bowlers for Mareeba with both claiming two wickets for only a handful of runs. Mareeba’s senior C Grade side the Bandits also qualified for the grand final after thumping semi-final victory over Mission Beach at Kerribee Park on Sunday.
The Bandits batted first against the fourth-placed Mission Beach and scored at more than a run a ball in posting 208 off their allotted 30 overs. Adam Roy scored a quick fire 60 runs from 41 balls while the opening stand from Bomber Adams (40) and Robert Taylor (33) got the home side off to a flying start. Young batsmen Rowan Foxwell and Lachlan Ford made important contributions at the end of the innings of 18 not out and 15 not out, respectively. Mission Beach was never in the hunt in reply losing three wickets in the first three overs to be reeling at three for 10. Robert Wallace took a wicket in each of his first two overs while Roy also claimed a wicket in his opening over. Tennis series hits Mareeba By Ryan Groube
By Ryan Groube The Mareeba Bulls have stamped their mark as FNQ soccer heavyweights by taking out the inaugural pre-season competition at Borzi Park at the weekend. In Sunday afternoon’s Mazda Cup final the Bulls, who went undefeated through their group, faced off against the FNQ FC Heat’s premier league team. Inform striker Steven Cater scored in the second half for the Bulls which proved the difference in front of a crowd of more than 100. Bulls’ coach Alex Srhoj said the weekend had been a “fantastic” success and that the final had pitted the two best teams from throughout the carnival. “We always knew the final was going to be a tough game and we knew we had to be on our game,” he said. “Our good players stood up when
they needed to and all in all it was a good tussle. They had some chances, we had some chances and in the end it was a good way to finish what had been a fantastic weekend.” FNQ FC coach Doug Baird said the tournament was a fantastic barometer for where his young side was at leading into the season. “It is always a joy coming up here. It is a well run tournament and it has given us a good indication of where we are ahead of the season,” he said. “We played a high quality side in the final and the only side that managed to beat us over the course of the tournament. “They have some very good players and the few mistakes that we did make out there today got punished and that is something that we have got to learn from.” The ladies competition was taken out by the FNQ FC Heat.
More than 80 young tennis players from across the far north descended on Mareeba on Sunday for the Medibank Junior Development Series. The series, run across the far north throughout the year, is designed to give tennis players at regional clubs an introduction to tournament play. Run over two days, the series featured age groups up to Under 17s, with all players guaranteed a minimum number of games during the round robin event. Tournament director Wayne Fielder said for many players making the transition between coaching

travel up hill and down dale. Mr Fielder said he was delighted with the 83-player turnout at the Mareeba Tennis Club, saying the attendance had almost exceeded that of the event at Cairns. "In Cairns we got 103 players so for Mareeba to get 83 is just huge," he said. "The good thing about this series is that we get a chance to get out to these regional clubs where the players so rarely get a chance to play at home because they are always travelling to the bigger events." Mr Fielder said attendance was up by about 20 players from last year and that he had been impressed by the standard of the juniors who participated.
Gladiators, Roosters fall
The Mareeba Gladiators and Atherton Roosters will be chasing their first wins of the year at home next week, following away losses at the weekend. The 'Gators travelled to Mossman/Port Douglas for their first game of the season after having the bye in round one. A Grade went down 36-4 with coach Cameron McPherson saying: "they just ran harder and tackled harder than we did, it was as simple as that." The Reserves got their premiership defence off to a
Race series to begin The Far North Queensland Motorsports Club is gearing up for its first sprint racing event of the year to be held on March 30 at Mareeba’s Mako Trac. The sprint racing series has been expanded this year due to popular demand, and will include seven rounds throughout the year finishing in November. The event is unique in the far north as anyone can enter in their own registered street car, with there being separate classes to cater for everyone based on engine size and age of the vehicle. On any one day there may be anything from modern
or playing club fixtures to regional tournaments could be daunting. "The series is about getting kids into our bigger tournaments. Through this series they play under tournament conditions and they get to learn how they work," he said. "This is a 'B' tournament and it is very much about participation and not about points." More experienced players who attended the event were bumped up to play in higher age divisions to create a more level playing field. Mareeba's Bronson Cater, 13, played up in the Under 17s division at the event but the Cater family was just glad they got to play a tournament at home without having to
sports cars, V8s' to early model Toyotas and Datsuns. The sprint is a time trial over the 1.3 kilometre bitumen circuit, with cars separated so there is no chance of contact or damage. All vehicles are scrutineered prior to the event commencing to determine vehicle safety and compliance. good start with a 20-18 win, while the U18s went down 44-20 to the Sharks. The Malanda/Mareeba C Grade side got their season off to a winning start with a 28-22 win. The Atherton Roosters travelled to play the Ivanhoe’s at the weekend. In the A Grade clash the Roosters fell 34-16. The game of the day was in the Reserves with Atherton erasing a huge early deficit to record a 42-42 draw. The Under 18s had a 34-30 win.
