Tom’s big plans

ayor-elect Tom Gilmore has moved quickly to temper community expectation about what the new Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) will be able to achieve in its first term. On November 13, the Electoral Commission of Queensland declared Mr Gilmore the winner of a closely fought mayoral race over de-amalgamation champion Mick Borzi. Joining Mr Gilmore on the reformed MSC are councillors-elect Alan Pedersen, Mary Graham, Nipper Brown, Jenny Jensen, Allan Holmes and Karen Ewin. Mr Gilmore began preliminary talks with Mareeba Shire transfer manager Rod Ferguson on Friday to ensure the new MSC has all the necessary information to begin governing

immediately. “I have a number of ideas to put to him in terms of material I would like to be placed before council immediately after they are sworn in, because I don’t want to be wasting time asking for those things after the event,” he said. “Quite frankly we’ve only got two years and we don’t have time to sit on our hands and contemplate. What we have to do is get things rolling which are above and beyond the work that is currently being done in house.” Mr Gilmore said the community needed to be aware that there was going to be an initial period of “austerity” before the new council found its feet. “I want the community to understand there is going to be a period of time over the next couple of years when the council will struggle in terms of its capacity to raise money and its capacity to pay,” he said. “[There will be] a period of austerity

- there is no question of that, we know that, even though we haven’t been given a full handle on the facts and figures.” Each of the councillors echoed Mr Gilmore’s view on the need for quick and decisive decision making and prudent financial management. Mr Pedersen said: “The first two years needs to be about ensuring the council is financial and able to maintain services. Once that has been achieved then we can begin to look at other things.” Business owner Mary Graham said it had become increasingly clear that people had become less willing to invest in Mareeba over the past couple of years. Nipper Brown said he would view the first term of the MSC as a success provided “we are fairly set on a financially viable road.” Incumbent Tablelands Regional Councillor

Jenny Jensen said that the first MSC had been entrusted with “making sure this works”. Cattleman Allan Holmes told The Express that it was vital to ensure staff felt secure and comfortable in their positions as soon as the MSC began operating. “The staff will be our most valuable asset and they need to be confident and secure in their employment and not afraid to give us the right advice,” he said. The final seat on council will be filled by Karen Ewin. Mr Gilmore said he was delighted with his team and said the all possessed the character and the intellect to “make the tough decisions”. Mr Borzi has formally written to the ECQ requesting a recount. Profiles of all the MSC councillors-elect can be found on pages 4 and 5.

Anna Slaughter (pictured) and her husband Matt donated prize bull Eskwood White Hawk for charity at Mareeba Saleyards on November 15.

The memory of a lost friend motivated the donation of a prize bull for sale to raise money for cystic fibrosis awareness and research The bull, called Eskwood White Hawk, was donated by Anna and Matthew Slaughter from Bowen, and was bought at Mareeba Saleyards by Ingham cattleman Patrick Sheahan for $2300 on November 15. The money was raised on behalf of Supporters of 65 Roses Inc and will go to the Shelley Sheppard Memorial PHD Scholarship, which set up in May and enables cystic fibrosis research at the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane. Ms Slaughter was a longtime friend of Ms Sheppard, who lost her battle with cystic fibrosis in 2012. The donation of Eskwood White Hawk was done in Ms Sheppard’s honour, said Ms Slaughter. “I knew Shelley since I was a little girl and I really wanted to do something in her memory,” she said. “About three weeks ago I got the idea and put it up on Facebook offering the bull for donation, I had about 400 hits in a week which was wonderful. We’re really glad that someone has opened up to this idea and bought this bull for charity.” Mr Sheahan said he was more than happy to purchase the bull in order to raise funds to combat cystic fibrosis.

Appearing at the prestigious Champion of Champions festival in Brisbane over November 9 and 10 was just one step on the journey to country music superstardom for two Tableland singers. Walkamin Country Music Club members Rebecca Nethery, 16, from Chillagoe, and Jacynta’Lee Glaspy, 20, from Malanda, both placed second in their respective categories at the festival, which features aspiring performers from all over the state. Jacynta’Lee delivered renditions of It Happens by Sugarland

and If You Can by Tammy Cochrane while Rebecca, who performed in the Junior 13-18 Girls section, sang Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift. Rebecca “made the song her own” during her performance. “I definitely had my own spin on it,” she said. “I didn’t do it like Taylor, I sang it much lower, I changed a few of the words and changed some of the notes.” Despite both coming second, the girls agree that even appearing the Champion of Champions counts as a win. “Getting a second at Champion of Champions is really good for

promotion and showing people what you can do,” Rebecca said. Jacynta’Lee agreed. “You have to be invited in order to attend so just to even get there is pretty big,” she said. Rebecca, who will soon be finishing Year 11, will continue playing at parties and at the Chillagoe Hotel for the time being. Jacynta’Lee now has her sights set on the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January 2014, in addition to returning to the next Champion of Champions and claiming first place, in addition to entering the Starmaker talent search competition.

Deputy Mayor Evan McGrath lays a wreath at the Remembrance Day service in Mareeba on November 11. Inset, digger Vivian ‘Bill’ Hunter.

A man who proudly served his country and his adopted community of Mareeba will no longer have to endure the indignity of lying in an unmarked grave. Across the nation on November 11, Australians in their droves remembered fallen war heroes with about 60 people attending a Remembrance Day service in Mareeba. Even with the strong turnout, the individual stories of diggers like Vivian ‘Bill’ Hunter – a larger-than-life man with a big moustache and an even bigger hat – are beginning to fade. Mr Hunter enlisted in the army on October 7, 1941 where he served with the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) as a Lieutenant. One of his postings during World War II was in Cairns as first mate of the small ship Qastina as part of the RAE 16 Australian Small Ships Company. Working under the supervision of the Navy, the crew would ship out on missions to find and disable mines. Mr Hunter married Esme Moore in Brisbane in 1944 with the couple moving back to Cairns prior to his discharge on February 8, 1945. After the war, Mr Hunter did a stint with the Cairns Shire Council before the couple slowly headed west, first settling at a defunct dairy farm at Kuranda before continuing on too Mareeba. At Mareeba they settled at a house on the corner of Kowa and Lerra streets where they raised two children, Alan and Florence. While living in Mareeba, Mr Hunter established a small civil engineering business Mareeba Maid out of a shed in Walsh Street with most of his work coming in making equipment used in the tobacco industry. A regular at the Mareeba Rodeo, Mr Hunter served a stretch as president in 1957, before his untimely death in 1962, aged 52.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

William Hunter, the son from Mr Hunter’s first marriage to Monica Close, found out that his father was lying buried in an unmarked grave and felt his dad deserved better. “I spoke to my family and we decided to try to get the War Graves Commission to put a headstone on his grave, and if they wouldn’t agree, we would see what we could do,” he said. “The War Graves [Commission] agreed without any argument. They said the brass plate has been made and the headstone will be in place next February. “Members of my family intend to come up to Mareeba next April or May for a suitable, simple, grave-side ceremony.” Mr Hunter said he hoped his father’s other two children, Alan – who served as a bombardier in Vietnam – and Florence would be able to attend the ceremony. A spokesperson from the Department of Veterans Affairs said that it was not uncommon for those that have served their country to lie in unmarked graves. The spokesperson said the department provides about “4000 official commemorations” each year and that a contractor had been employed to complete Mr Hunter’s headstone. Mareeba resident John Stephenson got to know Mr Hunter after his father offered him a place to camp during a Mareeba Rodeo in the early 1950s. “My Dad and Bill had an association for a number of years. I was 17 or 18 at the time so I was busy doing other things but I do still remember him as a real rough, knockabout bloke who had a moustache and a big hat,” he said. “I think anyone who served our country in war deserves to be recognised in some way.” The plaque Mr Hunter will be buried under will bear an inscription citing his rank, the division he served with, a list of family and his date of death.

MEET YOUR NEW MAREEBA COUNCILLORS JENNY JENSEN

ALAN PEDERSEN Alan Pedersen says he can’t wait to get to work rebuilding the Mareeba Shire after all the “hype” surrounding the election, and the de-amalgamation referendum before that. The former Tablelands Regional Councillor, who runs a 45,000 hectare cattle property as well as a gold mine on the Mitchell River north west of Cairns, was the top vote-getter at the November 9 election. Mr Pedersen had originally said he would not contest the election but was persuaded by mayoral candidate Mick Borzi to run as a member of his team. “The reason I ran was to see the job through and to steady the ship over the next two years,” he said. “We need to put down an effective organisational structure straight away and our focus needs to be on core business for the first two years – there won’t be too much funding for warm and fuzzy things. “The most rewarding part of being a councillor for me has always been about the nuts and bolts of making the thing work and I am really looking forward to this challenge.” Mr Pedersen said he was also mindful of the need for the new MSC to represent all the communities within its boundaries, not just Mareeba and Kuranda. He also said that he was disappointed Mr Borzi fell just short in

Tablelands Regional Councillor Jenny Jensen will make the transition to the Mareeba Shire Council on January 2, 2014. Elected as a divisional councillor for Kuranda for the first term of the Tablelands Regional Council in 2008, Cr Jensen was returned at the 2012 TRC election. Having made a late decision to put her hand up for a seat on the Mareeba Shire Council, Cr Jensen finished fourth in the voting at the November 9 MSC election. December 31 will mark her final day as a TRC councillor, two days later on January 2, 2014, she will be sworn in as a councillor with the Mareeba Shire. Cr Jensen said the biggest challenge facing the new MSC was to unite the community while at the same time having to be

financially disciplined. “I think the community understands that we won’t have the money for major projects and major initiatives,” she said. “People will need to accept that not everybody will be getting what they want and that is just part of what goes with it [de-amalgamation].” Cr Jensen said one of the things that she loved most about the communities within the Mareeba Shire was how passionate its residents are. “I love that our communities are passionate but I also do not like seeing our communities in pain,” she said. “We have reached a time when it is now the moment to move on and for the whole Shire to realise that if we are going to make this work we have to do it together.”

NIPPER BROWN

the Mayoral race against Tom Gilmore. “For a bloke that worked so hard for this shire I feel a little let down and I am sure that Mick feels the same way,” he said. “I would have loved to see him there to finish the job.” Mr Pedersen said despite him running on the opposing team to Mr Gilmore and the majority of councillors-elect, he was confident they would form and effective and efficient council.

C

Nipper Brown says he intends to be a councillor for a long time and is looking forward throwing himself into the job. A long working history of management roles within Telstra has made Mr Brown familiar with reading legislation and operating within regulations but he concedes it will be a steep learning curve. The leading vote-getter of four councillor-elects from Tom’s Team, Mr Brown said: “I am terribly humbled by the amount of faith people have shown in me.” “I consider myself a level-headed person who will call it how I see it and tell people the truth even if they might not always like it. “It is going to be a big challenge but what I can promise is that I will always do

the best that I can for all the region’s ratepayers”. In addition to running beef cattle and an earthworks business, Mr Brown is a contractor working as the manager of landfills for the Tablelands Regional Council. On January 1, 2014, that contract will transfer to the Mareeba Shire Council until its expiry in July 2014. Mr Brown said he welcomed Mayorelect Tom Gilmore’s decision to appoint a probity auditor to oversee the tender process for contacts where their may be deemed to be a conflict of interest. “I welcome that the probity auditor will oversee it [the next transfer station tender process]. I don’t want to be a part of anything that is not above board,” he said.

MEET YOUR NEW MAREEBA COUNCILLORS ALLAN HOLMES Allan Holmes has vowed to act as a spending “handbrake” to ensure the reformed Mareeba Shire Council lives within its means. Mr Holmes came to Mareeba in 1976 through a transfer in his job within the Beef Cattle Branch of the Department of Primary Industries. He disputes that he has been in the Shire long enough to be considered a local but says his three adult sons, all of whom were schooled in Mareeba, certainly are.

After finishing with the DPI, Mr Holmes began a consultation business developing cattle properties in Cape York. He still owns a cattle station at Chillagoe and was the former chair of the Cape York branch of the Cattleman’s Union. Mr Holmes said elements of his role with the union and as a consultant had given him a good understanding of financial management and how government operates. “I know what it takes to run fairly big businesses and one of the first things that you learn is that if your financial management is slack then you are in seri-

ous trouble,” he said. “For me it is about getting the council on the right path. The big test of our success as a council won’t come at the first budget or even the second budget. I think we’ll get a fair indication of how we are travelling at that third budget [the final one of the abbreviated MSC term].” Mr Holmes said it was pivotal the new MSC bedded down its organisational structure as soon as possible and give its staff a measure of security. “The staff have been in a state of flux for a long while now. The new council will be relying on them so it is important that they feel safe in their jobs,” he said.

1/2 DAY SALE MARY GRAHAM

A working life in the public eye has been attributed to political rookie Mary Graham’s success at the Mareeba Shire Council election on November 9. Ms Graham finished a clear second in the race for a seat on the new Mareeba Shire Council securing more than 5000 votes. Born and bred in Mareeba, Ms Graham grew up on a tobacco farm on the Walsh River before working her way through the ranks to second-in-command in a 26-year career at Coles. For the past five years, Ms Graham has run Mareeba News and said her regular dealings with the public had helped during the election. “I think being a local and being approachable had a lot to do with it [being elected],” she said. Ms Graham said since she had been in the newsagency business she felt as though the Shire had gone backwards. “It is different now to when we first started five-and-a-half years ago,” she said. “The money just doesn’t seem to be in the town anymore and we need to start bringing investment and jobs back into the area. “I have been elected to work for the good to this Shire and my ultimate goal is to make sure we get it moving again.” A member of Mick Borzi’s ‘Your Team’, Ms Graham said she was confident of being able to work effectively with the four members of ‘Tom’s Team’ as well as the Mayor-elect Tom Gilmore.

KAREN EWIN

The final seat on the Mareeba Shire Council has fallen to Natasi's Cafe owner Karen Ewin, who pipped Kay Hastie by less than 100 votes. Born and raised in Gordonvale, Ms Ewin came to Mareeba in 1992 after making a series of pit stops in small towns out west as well as those on the southern Tableland. Eventually, the Ewins choose Mareeba as the place to settle and raise their three children. Ms Ewin said she wanted to return the Mareeba Shire as an area that attracted families and businesses. “If people have confidence in an area they will come to an area and that is where I think we [the Mareeba Shire] need to improve,” she said. In a diverse career, Ms Ewin has worked as a legal secretary, for Education Queensland, at a real estate agent and for the former Mareeba Shire Council predominately in administration roles. Ms Ewin believes the skills she has learnt within a range of organisations, and as a small business owner, gave her a good base of skills to be a councillor. While Ms Ewin agrees the first term of the Mareeba Shire will be primarily focused on financial management, she is looking further down the track. “I am not viewing this as a two year job,” she said. “Sure there are going to be some things that go on the back burner first up. Like in all businesses, you need to be able to prioritise but it is important you don't forget to look to the future.”

ENTSCH SPEAKS OUT FOR AUSTRALIAN GRAZIERS

THE Coalition Government’s commitment to supporting the live export industry has been reaffirmed in Parliament this week. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch took an opportunity in Question Time yesterday to highlight to the Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, the plight of livestock cattle exporters in his electorate who were “severely compromised” by Labor’s sudden ban on live exports to Indonesia in 2011.

Mr Entsch asked: “What action is the minister taking to deliver a sustainable livestock export trade that increases economic returns to farmers and exporters in the long term?” In his response, Mr Joyce acknowledged Mr Entsch’s concerns and said that Labor’s knee-jerk response “personified what the former government was about”. “It was a sad day indeed when we woke up and found out that the country was not actually being run by the Labor government; it was being run by Four Corners — when we found out that one of our closest trading relationships, one of

our most important partnerships, had been basically taken through the mud by reason of the rash and irrational actions of a government that just could not come to grips with the hard decisions.” Mr Joyce said it was important to recognise that from the moment the opportunity came to assist the industry, the Coalition “put their shoulder to the wheel” and traveled to regional areas to meet with the people who were suffering from a situation not of their making. “We had to do what we could within our power to try and assist,” he said.

Latest labour force data shows positive changes for the Far North

DAVID Kempton, Member for Cook, has said the latest labour force data released today is a sign of “bigger and better” things to come for residents in the Far North. The data, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, found that the Far North statistical region enjoyed a 1.5 per cent drop in the unemployment rate, the largest decrease by percentage in all 13 work force regions across the State for the year to October 2013. It also showed a 2.8 per cent increase in the number of employed people for the same time period. “That means 3,800 extra Far Northerners have joined the workforce in the past year which is a very positive sign of improving confidence in our local economy,” Mr Kempton said. “While there is still a lot of work to be done, these latest figures are direct evidence that we are enjoying positive changes long overdue for the people of this region. “At 7.7 per cent, our unemployment rate is still far too high but we, as a Government, and as a community, are making inroads. “Since starting in office, the Newman Government has seen more than 33,000 jobs created in trend terms and around 32,000 in seasonally adjusted terms. “All politics aside, this shows that our plan to grow a four-pillar economy is working with Queensland having the fastest growing economy of all the Eastern States.” Mr Kempton said Queensland had experienced the strongest increase in trend employment of any state or territory in October, with 4,200 jobs created. “Trend employment has now increased in 12 of the last 13 months,” he said. “We have now set our sights on a dramatically reduced unemployment rate of 4 per cent and we remain strongly committed to that,” he said.

K O W A N YA M A HEALTH CENTRE: OFFICIAL OPENING

Kowanyama’s Mums n Bubs Family Health Centre was officially opened by Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council Mayor Robert Holness and Apunipima Cape York Health Council Chair Thomas Hudson on Thursday 14 November at 11 am. The Kowanyama Health Action Team, which liaises with Apunipima on the health needs of the community, has named the new facility Atharpuch (ART – AH – PUTCH) which means ‘children’.

PAGE 6 Mareeba Express, Wednesday, November 20, 2013

The event featured speeches, a traditional smoking ceremony and a barbeque luncheon and was attended by a range of health, government and community stakeholders. Atharpuch will operate solely as a health promotion and education centre until clinical arrangements are finalised. Until that time, clinical appointments will continue to take place in the Queensland Health facility. CEO Cleveland Fagan said the official opening marked an important milestone for Apunipima. ‘We are pleased and proud to have officially opened Atharpuch. Investment in health infrastructure in Kowanyama and the Cape is critical to improving the health of residents and we acknowledge the contribution of the Australian Government’s Health and Hospital Fund which enabled the refurbishment of Mums n Bubs building.’ ‘Atharpuch has a special room for the Kowanyama Health Action Team to meet and discuss the health needs of the community and share those needs with us. This is bricks and mortar support for the principle of community control which see the community owning their own health solutions.’ Mr Fagan said the Centre was being opened in line with community protocol and Apunipima’s Family Health, Men’s Health and Healthy Lifestyles Teams would be working with community over the coming months to ensure Atharpuch programs meet local health needs. ‘Apunipima runs a range of fantastic health promotion programs including Mum n Bubs Group, Antenatal Clinics and Classes, Men’s and Women’s Groups, Healthy Eating and Cooking Classes, Tackling Smoking and many more. We are in the process of planning our service schedule to best meet the needs of the Kowanyama community.’ Atharpuch is a former Queensland Health facility which was known locally as the Mums n Bubs Clinic. Apunipima acquired the lease in 2012 and spent a number of months refurbishing the building. The facility will host Apunipima, Queensland Health and community programs, meetings and initiatives.

JENSEN COOKS OFF AGAINST MAYORS

FAR North Queensland Mayors and sporting figures faced off in a battle of culinary skills during the Tropical Omelette Cook-Off in Cairns on November 13. Football hero Rod Jensen, representing the Tablelands, was awarded the Silver Whisk - tasty, very healthy, and hot to trot with a dash of fresh chilli. Other contestants included Cairns deputy Mayor Terry James, Cassowary Coast Mayor Bill Shannon and Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott. The Mayors and Rod used all local produce supplied by farmers in the Taste Paradise Food Network. Fiona George from Taste Paradise delivered a stunning banquet of produce for our Civic Chefs. The event was broadcast live via You Tube and aimed to encourage small business and community organisations to register for free information and face-to-face mentoring sessions around how to use online opportunities.

Tinaroo looking for new management By Ryan Groube The State Government is set to relinquish the management of the under performing and underutilized Lake Tinaroo Active Recreation Centre (ARC). For the past decade, occupancy at the recreation centre has hovered at about 25 per cent with expenses outstripping revenue by more than $500,000 each year between 2004 and 2008. Invitation to Offer documents have been sent to three organisations and

site inspections are under way. Deputy director-general of Sport and Recreation Services for the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing Richard Watson said offers for management of the centre were due by the end of the month. “Lake Tinaroo Active Recreation Centre is not for sale. The Queensland Government is inviting external organisations with a proven track record in managing similar centres in Queensland to apply to manage the Lake Tinaroo ARC,” he said.“This decision secures the future of the Lake Tinaroo

TRC quiet on tower drama The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has refused to disclose the details of an inspection of Chillagoe’s television transmission tower prior to an independent audit of the facility. Divisional councillor for Chillagoe Gaye Taylor is furious that she wasn’t informed about a visit by a technician from contractor N-Com on November 2. Chillagoe residents have made a series of complaints to the TRC this year following the upgrade of the tower from analogue to digital including: sound and image being out of sync, not being able to pick up most channels and the screen freezing intermittently. At the request of Cr Taylor, the TRC agreed to contract an auditor to inspect the upgrade at the retransmission facilities. Cr Taylor believes the site inspection has compromised the integrity of the audit. “I haven’t been able to get a straight answer about what has happened but apparently they [N-Com] had a I GAQL 7 1 8and _ 1they 8 1just 1 1happened 3 . p d to f goPtoaChilge technician in 7Cairns

The upgrade of the facility to digital cost $104,049, with ratepayers within the Special Chillagoe Benefited Levy footing the bill.

What comes after High School? By Boyd Robertson Life after school. It’s an abstract concept for most teenagers but it has now become reality for the Tableland’s former Year 12 students, who stepped out of their school gates and into the adult world on November 15. They join about 48,000 other Queensland students that left school last week. Watching them go are the teachers that have guided them through the last five years of secondary school. Most school leavers are currently kicking back in Schoolies Week in party destinations like the Gold Coast and Airlie Beach. Once the euphoria (and hangovers) of Schoolies wears off, however, it will be up to these young adults to figure

out what to do with their lives. The Queensland Next Step Survey for 2012 gave a snapshot of what last year’s school leavers were doing with themselves six months after graduating. The majority of them – 87 per cent – were either working or studying, with 39 per cent enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree and 25 per cent already in the labour force. Another challenge for graduates is the possibility of drifting apart from the people that have shared five or sometimes 12 years of their lives with. The Express spoke to graduating Mareeba State High School (MSHS) students Zejlko Higby, Sean Foster, Alessia Aloia and Lisa Nastasi at their ceremony on November 14 on how they felt about the future. The four have been friends since Year 8 and each had a different reaction to the rapidly approaching next step of their lives. While Sean said he was “feeling great” about the end of school and Lisa was “feeling weird about not seeing each other”, Zeljko, who is planning to head to Brisbane for tertiary studies, said he was feeling “mixed emotions”. “In one way I’m sad because I know I probably won’t see a lot of these guys for a long time,” Zejlko said. “On the other hand I am really happy to be finished exams and finished school and really looking forward to what’s next. I’ve really enjoyed high school, I think it was mad – and even though everyone will be drifting apart I’ll try to stay in touch with my friends as much as possible.” Alessia was more pragmatic, saying that it was all part of growing up. “We’ve all been together since day dot but accepting change is a part of life,” she said. “I think we’re ready for the next chapter.” Atherton High School principal Tony Whybird farewelled his cohort of students on November 15, and said he was also feeling torn over the end of their schooling careers. “I’ve been very happy to share their experiences over these last years and I’m sad to see them go,” he said. “This year’s group have been a fantastic bunch of kids and they’ll always be members of the Atherton State High School family. “Just like the Year Seven students that are about to enter secondary school, the Year 12s are now about to enter a whole different world and they’re ready to move on.”

Most glamorous event on calendar By Boyd Robertson The end of school for the Tableland’s Year 12 students last week also came with the most glamorous event on their social calendars – the endof-year formals. The Express pegged out a spot on the red carpet at both Atherton State High School (ASHS)’s and Mareeba State High School (MSHS)’s events, snapping the most gorgeous dresses, sharpest suits and most memorable entrances. Although MSHS students had their fair share of eye-catching rides to Mareeba International Club, the ASHS formal in that school’s hall proved to have a the greatest variety out-there entrances. Souped-up muscle cars, horse-drawn carriages, mobility scooters, humble panel vans and even a prime mover all ferried attendees to the ASHS hall’s entrance, but the most memorable of all had to be Atherton girl Trista Cozens’s arrival atop a litter carried by shirtless, musclebound male servants. Trista said she was “a little scared” but mainly felt safe atop her regal perch, given that her carriers consisted of her boyfriend Kale Querin, brothers Kevin, Shane and Jessie Cozens and close friend Ben Henderson. Decked out in a scintillating blue dress from Sunny Girl in Cairns, Trista said the other girls at the formal all looked “stunning.” “Everyone has been looking forward to the formal for so long,” she said. “We’ve all had a lot of fun getting dressed up.” Turn to page 15 for shots of the Atherton State High School, Mareeba State High School and St Stephens Catholic College formals.

Down the (native) garden path.... October-November is the dry season, and this year it has well and truly lived up to it’s name. But the amazing thing is, no matter how dry it is, there’s just so much happening in our native gardens here at Yuruga. So come with us for an amble down our Yuruga garden paths at the moment. Firstly, the number of plants in flower is quite astonishing... White Oaks with their showy white flower spikes and glorious bronze foliage, White Cedars with their delicately scented lavender flowers, Silky Oaks loaded with bright orange toothbrush flowers, Cadaghi Gums and Bamaga Satinash with great big bunches of fluffy white flowers, Bat’s Wing Coral Trees and Flame Trees which shed all their leaves for a brilliant display of bright red flowers, native Cassias dripping with large yellow racemes, Melaleuca Snowstorm (guess what the flower looks like!), grassy clumps of Matt Rush with beautifully scented flower spikes, and Native Fuchsias (Graptophyllums) loaded with so many dark red flowers that the leaves are totally obscured. Just fantastic! Then there’s the fruit. Palm Lilies with bright green foliage and glorious bunches of contrasting glossy red fruit, the Potato Vine dropping large white fruit on the roof of the tin shed (bang!), the Fibrous Satinash with bunches of juicy bright pink berries which make the best jam (trust us!), the Blush Satinash loaded with showy bunches of white fruit, Hairy Figs loaded with bright orange fruit, Sandpaper Figs full of furry green fruit and the Poplar Gum (Eucalyptus platyphylla) a deciduous gum tree which loses its leaves when it flowers. And finally there’s the birds. As well as our permanent residents (Yellow Honeyeaters, Brown Honeyeaters and pretty little Gerygones), there’s glorious Sunbirds, Red-Backed Wrens and Double-Barred Finches, friendly Rufous Fantails, the melodic Grey Shrike-Thrush, fantastic Red-Wing Parrots, and flocks of excited Fig Birds. And the raucous Channel-Billed Cuckoo is back again announcing (rather loudly) that, yes, it will rain again soon. One of the beautiful things about this time of year is the glorious floral carpets covering the ground beneath the trees... lavender carpet under the White Cedars, yellow carpet under the Cassias, white carpet under the Bamaga Satinash, red carpet under the Flame Trees, and maroon carpet under the Fuchsias. Just so pretty! The countryside might be as dry as a bone, but the garden is full of colour, activity and song. No wonder we love our native gardens.

Happy gardening, and see you at Yuruga!

House of Chia owner Shirley Greenwood with a handful of locally-grown chia seeds.

Superfood grown here on Tableland By Boyd Robertson A new health food craze is sweeping the international market, and you can get the only locally-grown version right here in Mareeba. House of Chia on Byrnes Street is run by natural therapist Shirley Greenwood and specialises in the seeds of the chia plant, a species of flowering mint originally from Mexico. The small, dark seeds go for about $25 a kilogram and are jam-packed with protein, fibre and anti-oxidants. Critically, they contain more omega-3 fatty acid per gram than raw salmon and are also gluten-free and non-allergenic. These attributes have recently brought chia much attention from health food enthusiasts in the United States. Ms Greenwood, who opened House of Chia in early October, has been growing about 10 hectares of chia for three years at Dimbulah and is the first to grow it in Queensland. She is also the only producer in the world to harvest the plant’s flowers, which she uses to create chia-infused teas, as well as incorporating the seeds into baked goods and selling them straight for use in smoothies. Ms Greenwood said she wasn’t afraid to take the risk of establishing the House of Chia in Mareeba, seeing a niche in the town’s nutritional market. “We’re a very multicultural town here in Mareeba, we have a lot of different histories and food types like Italian and Asian – but what we don’t have is many

Put Your Business Online with CATsites

foods with lots of omega-3, which is why people are getting into chia elsewhere,” she said. “The reason I wanted to introduce the tea aspect of things is because tea is about conversation and communication, it’s a relaxing thing to be able to sit down with friends and talk about everything over some tea.” “Plus we have the best climate in the world on the Tableland, it’s perfect for growing this crop.” Ms Greenwood was keen to list chia’s beneficial properties, including helping guard against heart, liver and bowel disease, arthritis, stroke and cancer, as well as balancing blood sugar levels. Although much of the current scientific research into the seeds has yet to come back with conclusive results, a nutritional study conducted by the University of Southern Queensland showed that rats on a chia-supplemented diet showed less fat build-up around their vital organs in addition to greater sensitivity to insulin and tolerance of glucose. Nutrition Australia Queensland (NAQ) senior nutritionist Aloysa Hourigan said that while chia was undoubtedly good for you, people shouldn’t be throwing out all their other foodstuffs just yet. “Chia seeds could be a useful addition to a wellbalanced nutritious diet, but chia alone will not assure us of good health,” she said. “There are some possible health benefits from chia seeds given they are similar in nutrient content to other edible seeds. “Food variety is the key too good health – there is no one food that supplies the appropriate balance of all the key nutrients.”

SERVICING ALL MAKES AND MODELS SPECIALISING IN 4WD

It’s early morning and as you sip on your cuppa, you are wondering what the weather man on the telly last night was on about with his clear skies forecast. Dark grey rain clouds are looming in the distance and your trying to work out that if I leave now, maybe I can beat it without getting wet? Fat chance. This is the tropics, and with the wet season approaching, 9 out of 10 your going to get caught out in it, so don’t let rain stop you from your ride, just kit up for the wet and get out there and enjoy riding. Ok, let’s talk about some wet weather gear tips that might help you from getting soaked. Hopefully you have some riding gear already like riding boots and a jacket, both should be ok in a passing shower, but after a while the water will be absorbed and everything gets heavy. If your jacket is leather, give it a good clean and apply a good coat of waterproof leather conditioner, same with your boots, and if you have vented boots like me, just put shopping bags on your boots – works for me. Rain suits work fine, but I prefer to feel unrestricted, so I just have the basics. Waterproof gloves are a good investment and so are waterproof pants that you can slip on quickly with your boots on. If your wearing a Fabric jacket, then waterproof spray will be your friend and re-apply after washing. Basically you are going to get wet, it’s only to what degree that varies. Now to tyres. Let’s keep it simple. Have a good look at them like the tread depth, correct pressure, crack-

ing and how they are wearing. If they look suss replace both of them at the same time and buy quality tyres, as they are the things sticking you to the road. If you need any advice on tyres or wet weather gear, the local businesses in the know will get you sorted. The events calendar is thinning out this time of the year with the Motocross season wrapping up for the year, but keep a lookout for practice days in Mareeba, Ravenshoe and Cairns, that will be happening from time to time during the wet season. The Far North Road Racing Club are having a come and try/ ladies day/ practice day, out at Mako trac, Springs Road, Mareeba, on Saturday, November, 30. You can get more info off their website www.fnqroadracingclub.com. au. At this stage I have no idea if the Toy Run is on this year, which brings me to question the Gestapo Government’s new Bikie laws. Personally I think that it is my right to choose who I ride with, and with how many mates I choose to ride with, and I sure as hell will not be informing the Police hotline that we are out riding and where we are going. I am aware of groups of motorcyclists that have been stopped, questioned, and photographed for no reason just so they can establish a data base on motorcyclists. This also happened in Townsville when a group of riders were stopped by Police while they were riding in a funeral Procession, that is just not on in my book. Until next month, enjoy the ride! Cheers, Andrew.

E! RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

One of the most eagerly awaited movies starts at The Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba tomorrow. THE HUNGER GAMES– CATCHING FIRE, is the second in the series and is an awesome production in every way, including the all star cast, Also starting in Mareeba tomorrow is THE BUTLER. Based on a true story and also with a top cast including Oprah Winfrey, Robin Williams, Jane Fonda, John Cusack and Forest Whittaker as the butler. If you appreciate a quality film with a good story, then The Butler is for you. Also continuing this week is ABOUT TIME. A delightful comedy with Bill Nighy and Rachel McAdams, and the final show of THOR. Finally, we have the classic ABBA movie, MAMMA MIA, on the big screen in full spectacular digital colour and sound. Tonight, there's a full theme night with the movie, food and entertainment, followed by additional screenings of Mamma Mia on Saturday and Sunday.

THE HUNGER GAMES – CATCHING FIRE - Katniss Everdeen

has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

THE BUTLER - Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) has been the Chief Butler for eight consecutive US presidents, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Working intiwww.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

entertainment mately with these world leaders at the White House, from his unique vantage point Cecil Gaines witnesses radical transformations in American history through the civil rights movement to Vietnam and the Cold War and sees how those changes affect his life and family. (Based on a true story.) Review by Louise Keller: Focusing on the advent and development of black rights and with Forrest Whitaker as our guide, we embark on a fascinating walk through the annals of American history; the pit stops are signposted by the string of Presidents whom The Butler serves. Based on the story of long time White House butler Eugene Allen, Lee Daniels' embellished narrative (based on an article by Wil Haygood called 'A Butler Well Served by This Election') introduces us to Cecil Gaines (Whitaker) whose journey as a young boy from the cotton fields in Georgia to the White House in Washington is bumpy and coloured with all shades of grey. It's a story about black and white America, protests, revolts and changing atti-

tudes, juxtaposing Cecil's life against recognisable historic moments and the Presidents of the time. Overall engaging with sympathetic performances by Whitaker and TV Queen Oprah Winfrey, there is much to absorb,. There are voyeuristic moments - like John and Jackie Kennedy's arrival at the White House and intimate moments between Cecil and the various Presidents, who take him in their confidence. Key casting is entertaining in itself with Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower, James Marsden as JF Kennedy, Liv Schreiber as Lyndon B, Johnston, John Cusack as Richard Nixon and Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan. Minka Kelly gives a good semblance of Jackie Kennedy as does Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan. There is humour, too. The grit of the film occurs outside the White House, when the central focus is on Cecil's family.

father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can't change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life-so he decides to make his world a better place, by getting a girlfriend. Moving from the Cornwall coast to London to train as a lawyer, Tim finally meets the beautiful but insecure Mary (Rachel McAdams). They fall in love, but an unfortunate time-travel incident means he's never met her at all. So they meet for the first time again - and again - but finally, after a lot of cunning time-traveling, he wins her heart. Tim then uses his power to create the perfect romantic proposal, but that's not the end of it.

The LAND Get the duck outta here By Ryan Groube A semi-retired CSIRO scientist has put the call out to farmers willing trial an innovative piece of equipment designed to reduce crop damage caused by birds. Ecologist Graham Harrington has secured a Deni Ducklight which has been successful in driving birds off rice paddocks in New South Wales. The machine has a rotating spotlight and siren which is mounted on a metal base and is powered by an attached solar panel. At dusk the machine switches on automatically, releasing a piercing blast and a blinding light every six minutes. Mr Harrington said thousands of ducks and geese spend the day at locations including Hastie Swamp before dispersing to farms across the Tableland at dusk to feed. Newly sprouting peanut, sorghum and maize crops are particularly vulnerable. “The impact that these birds are having is enormous. I know a farmer who had to completely replant an entire maize field because the birds just took the lot,” he said. “Crops are at risk when they first ger-

minate so people should only need to use the machine for less than a week and one light should cover a field of 25-30 acres. “I’d like to get some people willing to try it out for the January crops and if it is successful then they will be up for sale.” The machine is currently being trialled at a feed lot between Atherton and Malanda with limited success. “At the moment it seems to be scaring the cattle more than the birds,” Mr Harrington laughed. “[In saying that], this is something that I think is worth giving a proper try.” Mr Harrington is also hoping to begin a trial of a chemical being used to deter cranes from feeding on crops during the day. Avipel is a chemical that can be sprayed on crops and if a bird pulls up a stalk the chemical will cause them to vomit and “after that they leave the crop alone. We are looking at non-lethal repellents,” he said. The Deni Ducklight won’t be sold by Mr Harrington, if the trial is successful farmers will be able to purchase the machine through Deniliquin Auto Electrical. Farmers interested in participating in the trial can email Mr Harrington at riflebird1@gmail.com

Stock on offer at the 47th Annual Tropical North Queensland Annual Brhaman Sale at Mareeba Saleyards on November 17.

Cattle sales stunted By Boyd Robertson

Drought conditions have stunted both showing and buys at the 47th Annual Tropical North Queensland Annual Brahman Sale held at Mareeba Saleyards on November 15, but organisers and vendors remain hopeful that coming rains will boost activity. Out of a total of 106 lots on offer, 26 did not meet the upset price of $2000 for bulls and $1500 for heifers and had to be passed over, meaning only 74 per cent of the stock cleared. Traditionally a Brahman-only sale, low numbers forced the introduction of Droughtmasters and other breeds to the event this year. Vendor Gerhard Posselt sold the best-priced bull at $4250, while Greg Jenkins topped the prices for heifers at $2000. Mr Posselt said the lacklustre showing was unsurprising given the state’s long spell of dry conditions

but expressed hope that things would pick up when the wet season arrives. “For sure, this year has been hard, so we expected the sale to be a bit like how it was,” he said. “Prices have been low all year because of the drought, naturally people out on the stations don’t have the money to be picking up expensive stock so this is what happens. The prices have been very slowly creeping up and as soon as the rains hit I reckon it’ll come good again.” Mareeba Saleyards livestock manager Mark Peters had similar hopes and urged both buyers and sellers not to lose confidence. “Our clearance rate wasn’t high because it’s too dry,” he said. “We’re very grateful to the people that have come all the way in and spent their money in very adverse conditions. “Every week that goes by, however, we get closer to rain.”

460 head of cattle penned at market Mareeba Combined Agents penned a total of 460 head of Prime and Store cattle for this week’s market. Numbers reduced by 82 head, values firm to stronger on last week for the better finished heavy Bullocks and Cows but rates remained unchanged for Heavy Slaughter Bulls. Bullocks and Steers suitable for the Local trade sold to values not seen since last year, top of 188.6 c/ kg. Bullocks suitable for the Export Slaughter trade lifted by 2

c/ kg. Cows suitable for the Local Wholesale market returned a similar average compared to previous weeks. Cows suitable for the Export Slaughter trade rose in value with some very heavy Cows selling to rates 4 c/ kg up on last week’s top. Store cattle were in short supply and sold to a very limited gallery of Buyers, although Store cows averaged 91 c/ kg and 350 k and Steers averaged 130 c/ kg.

Young master advances in martial art By Boyd Robertson Discipline, precision, aggression and years of training have enabled a young Mareeba martial artist to achieve a rank beyond his years. Emilio Papa, 16, was granted a black belt in Bushi Kai, a karate-based martial art, at a gradings event in Mareeba PCYC Hall on November 16. Papa faced a gruelling fitness test of 100 push-ups and 100 sit-ups before fighting through 20 rounds of sparring in order to be deemed worthy of the black belt by regional chief instructor Rod Miller. While it is not unheard of for a 16-year-old to attain a black belt, it is considered rare and the achievement is considered a “milestone” for

him by instructor John Nucifora. Papa said he felt “amazing” and “proud” after being granted the black belt. Nucifora said the 16-year-old’s aggression and determination was his outstanding attribute, which also merits that he wear a black ‘gi’ robe during training. “Emilio is the type that won’t stop training, he lives, breathes and sleeps martial arts,” he said. Papas has been practising Bushi Kai for five years and has no intention of stopping soon. “I was really interested in self-defence, in being able to protect yourself on the street, as well as the self-understanding and focus that come with martial arts,” he said. Papas is now eligible

to attain the first Dan (rank) of his black belt, but cannot choose when to do so. Instead he will be invited to by instructors “sometime in the near future”, according to Nucifora. Bushi Kai is a more free-form martial art than traditional karate, and was formed after a student of the Zen Do Kai school broke away from that organisation. Bushi Kai fighters use strikes, grabs and groundfighting techniques with equal proficiency, with more emphasis on surviving real-world encounters. Mareeba students train at the Dragon Warriors Dojo on Walsh Street, which was established in the 1980s and has about 30 members.

FINISH HIM: Mareeba Bushi Kai student Emilio Papa subdues a sparring opponent during his black belt gradings while instructors Rod Williams and John Nucifora look on.

Deal underway to save Tableland junior soccer By Ryan Groube Tablelands Junior Soccer Association (TJSA) is close to securing a deal to play a limited number of home and away games with Johnstone River Football in 2014. It is hoped the deal will help keep sufficient interest in junior soccer on the Tableland following the shock announcement Mareeba will defect to the Cairns competition from next year.

TJSA chair Raimond Bin said while the detail of the agreement between the associations had yet to be finalised he was confident of “getting a deal off the ground”. Preliminary discussions have centred around playing four of the seasons 15 rounds with the Johnstone River Association. For two weeks, Tableland teams would travel to Silkwood and for the other two weeks Johnstone River clubs would play at Atherton.

Mareeba basketball semi-finals week

One of the biggest sticking points at the moment is whether all age groups will travel or just the competitive ages played from Under 12s and up. Mr Bin said both associations had agreed that it was important to start small and gauge the reaction of parents. “If we can get this deal up it will bring an extra five clubs into our competition and an extra three clubs into theirs,” he said.

“The biggest issue that we face is going to be the travel but at least both of us have been willing to travel to each other which is something that we don’t get by joining Cairns. “It is a long trip, there is no question. We are both pretty keen to give it a go and we’ll see what the parents of our kids think and then have a look at whether we keep going, scrap it or even play more games.” Johnstone River Football president Scott Davies said he felt the up-

side of the competitions joining forces made the travel worthwhile. “It is very early days but we have a starting point and something to build on,” he said. “If this happens it will spice up both competitions. It won’t be the same kids playing the same teams all the time. “We certainly have a little way to go but there is strong interest from our association and we look forward with progressing it further before the start of next season.”

Avolio heads to U.S.

By Silvano Ruggeri Mareeba Basketball Inc President The Mareeba summer season championship semi-finals in all senior and junior grades, are being decided this week. With the winners progressing to next weeks’ grand finals, the various semi-finals should be keenly contested. Under 12 juniors start the semi-final series this Wednesday, where Tigers may have a slight edge over Dragons, with the winner to play Taipans in the grand final next week. Also decided this Wednesday is both senior mens semi-finals. The early encounter between Comets and Semi-Pros is an interesting clash, where Semi-Pros will prove hard to defeat providing they are at full strength, otherwise Comets can cause an upset. Lieutenant Dans and Stingray meet in what should prove a close contest in the second Mens Semi-Final. Thursdays’ under 16 junior semi-finals are sure to have many entertaining moments. Bullets are favourites to gain a grand final position in their clash with All Stars. However the other Semi between Flamingoes and Panthers appears so evenly matched, that the winner is hard to forecast. Baiada Steggles should once again gain a place the championship decider next week, when they do battle with Uniques on Thursday. But the other ladies semi-final between Locals and Gummaz go either way, both teams have the ability to score a victory and the result may well be in doubt until the final whistle. Kangaroos are likely to prove a little too solid for the young Jaguars side in Fridays’ Semi. While an even contest should develop between None-Ya and Eagles for the other Under 14 grand final place.

A 10-year-old from Mareeba has played his way into an Australian Futsal jersey following more than a year of stand out performances. In July, 2014 Damian Avolio will travel to Los Angeles with an Australian team to contest the US National Titles. It has been about four years that Australian teams have been travelling to the US to play in the tournament. Goalkeeper Milan Quintieri also made the team but will be unable to attend. In May, Damian was selected in a St Thomas of Villanova team that reached the final of the FNQ Schoolboys Futsal carnival. During the past school holidays, he played an important role as a creative play maker at the Australian Nationals in Sydney. His performances were enough to land him a seat on the plane to the US. “I played really well in Sydney. I was able to set up a lot of goals for my team,” he said. “I'm really excited [about going to the US]. It is going to be much faster and much harder and I can't wait to see how I handle it.” At the tournament the Australian teams will play against a series of US State teams.

By Boyd Robertson The Working Equitation Queensland 2013 State Championships held at Tepon Equestrian Centre near Wondecla on the weekend have been hailed organisers as a great success for the fledgling sport. Working equitation combines dressage and two ease of handling events in a bid to simulate a stock work scenario for both horse and rider.

The sport, originating in Spain and Portugal, has only recently arrived in Australia and is currently present in Queensland across three affiliated clubs. The event at Wondecla on November 16, hosted by the Working Equitation Far North Queensland club, marks the first time championships have been held in far northern Queensland. Mareeba rider Angie Piper won the Overall Queensland High Points

Champion at the event, which featured 24 separate rides. National Association of Working Equitation Clubs (NAWEC) director Colleen Jackson said the championships had been an excellent showing, with “huge improvements across the board” for all riders. “It’s been absolutely fantastic,” she said. “We’ve had a really good turnout and it’s great to see people getting into

the sport.” Ms Jackson said working equitation appealed to a broad base of riders and was expanding thanks to its diverse range of events, but acknowledged its new status meant that events could be few and far between. “The reason people are getting into working equitation is that it has something for everyone – our youngest member of the club is two years old and the oldest is 73.”

“If we want to get people involved we need to ship it around, which we’re happy to do because we’re trying to grow the sport. “We’re here for the long haul, we’ve done the hard yards and now it’s just a matter of keeping it going.” Ms Jackson said anyone looking to join the Working Equitation Far North Queensland club could enquire at workingequitationfnq@gmail.com

Bandits cream United ahead of Port clash By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Bandits have continued their sofar-unbroken winning streak, easily finishing off a two-day match against Cairns United at Kerribee Park on November 17. Cairns came out to bat but were bowled out by Mareeba at 113 runs, falling far short of the 251 scored by the Bandits on November 10. Robert Wallace was the Bandits’ leading bowler for the day, taking three wickets for 37 runs, with Adam Roy taking 2 for 32 and Danny Shaw on 2 for 20. With 17 overs left after bowling out their opponents, Mareeba returned to the field for a casual bat and ended up with 117 runs. Captain Brendan Paine retired himself after 52 runs and Roy followed up

a stellar performance from the previous game with 40 runs. The relatively easy time of things the Bandits have had so far might be in jeopardy, however, as the team prepares for their first away game of the season against Port Douglas on Sunday. Shaw said the team had to be prepared to play without their home field advantage, but was looking forward to facing Port Douglas. “We’ve had the home ground this whole time here at Kerribee and we’re comfortable,” he said. “So we’re going to be losing that advantage when we go down to Port Douglas. “They are a very good side and we always have good games and good onfield banter with them.” The Under 14s Mareeba side coached by David

Mareeba Bandits celebrate their win. Photo Peter Roy

Thomas also finished off a satisfying game at Kerribee Park on November 16, drawing on the second innings of a two-day match against Innisfail. Although Mareeba was on top after winning the previous innings they stopped two wickets short of an outright win and finished up on 253 runs, with seven for 109 at the end of the second day. Batters Damien Brcko, Zak Wilce and Kyle Bingchew were standouts, with Brcko and Wilce on 52 runs and Bingchew on 45. Coach Thomas said the team “performed very, very well” and was well prepared to begin another 2-day match against Atherton at Borzi Park in Mareeba this week. “The boys have really come together as a team and are improving all the time,” he said.
