Young leader shines at UN By Katherine Kokkonen
THE United Nations is a long way from the classroom, but Year 11 student Georgia Whybird is equally comfortable in each setting. The jet setting Atherton High School student travelled to the United States to attend the Global Youth Leadership Conference, where she took part in a mock UN exercise. Georgia was placed in the sub commission group addressing human rights and had her resolution on women and children’s rights passed in the mock UN. “Speaking in the UN was a really big thing,” she said. “Just to know that other politicians and foreign ambassadors have been sitting exactly where you’ve been sitting. It was a really intense and nerve-wracking experience and then everyone slowly calmed down and got into their role and it was a lot of fun.” Back in Australia, Georgia continued to excel in her young leader role, mixing with politicians at state parliament. While a career in politics would be a natural fit, Georgia is keeping a level head about the future. “I’m taking it bit by bit, at the moment,” she said. “Let’s go to Year 12 and get a good OP and I’ll see where that takes me,” she said.

Crafty charity By Katherine Kokkonen CRAZY Crafters have been stitching up a storm to create charming quilts for war widows. The hard work of the craft group adorns the Mareeba Library, with 35 quilts on display before they are given out to war widows, next month. Organiser Lynda Miller had been creating quilts for wounded soldiers with Quilts of Valour Australia when she talked to a member of Legacy and the idea was formed to create quilts for war widows. From an initial spark, the project grew with ten members of Crazy Crafters spending hundreds of hours sewing to create the quilts. The busy group has been working on their creations since April and the quilts will be presented to war widows at a special function on September 10. “You get to see who you’ve made it for and where it is going, which is lovely,” Ms Miller said. “It shows someone cares about
them.” While a lot of hard work has gone into the quilts, the project has also been fun for the Crazy Crafters. “My favourite thing has been being with all the other ladies and creating,” Ms Miller said. “Even though you are doing it as a group you are still creating your own little piece.” Former Legacy President Nobby Hall described the Crazy Crafters and their work as incredible and said the recipients would greatly appreciate their work. “What a great idea and what a fantastic effort on their behalf, it’s mindboggling that they would do this and think of other elderly people who have lost their husbands because of war related injuries,” he said. “Most of the widows are in their late 70s and in their 80s and really appreciate these types of things, especially on cold nights because a lot of them can’t afford gas heaters.” For those wanting to learn more

ROUGH seas were not able to deter a young Atherton sailor at the World Ladies Championships in Germany. Despite being the youngest sailor in the competition, Kristen Wadley, 13, kept her cool to come in second overall in the German nationals and first in the under 14 category. She was also the first girl in the World under 16 category and came in fifth overall. Kirsten was inspired by her dad and granddad to take up sailing almost five years ago and said she had hoped to make the top 10 placings at the World Championships. As well as being the youngest sailor, Kirsten had to contend with windy conditions on the open sea course in her open bic. “I wanted to do well, but I didn’t expect it to happen because I was the youngest one there,” she said. “Everyone was way big and I thought, ‘this is going
to be interesting’.” Kirsten admitted to being “way nervous” during the competition but said she was no longer scared of falling off her boat and into the water because it had already happened so many times before. “You never know what is going to happen and what is going to be the end result,” she said. While she said it felt amazing to cross the finish line, she also admitted to feeling relieved because it meant she could have a break from competition. Kirsten has her eyes on the Australian National Sailing Championships, in January, where she will compete in the Under 16 category. Beyond the nationals, Kirsten has wide horizons and would like to one day compete in the Olympics. Kristen Wadley sailed away with first girl in the Under 16 category at the World Ladies Championship, in Germany.

More help for those with mental illness By Katherine Kokkonen MORE people are now able to help those in need thanks to a mental health first aid course. Two courses, which improved participants’ knowledge of mental health problems and gave strategies on how to help people in crisis, were held earlier this month. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Principal Master Instructor Cliff Nelder said the two-day course gave people the skills to help somebody with a problem rather than ignore them. More than 20 people attended the courses and learned about topics including depression, psychosis, anxiety and substance abuse. “The skills they learn will come into use in day to day life, in workplaces, and the benefit to the community is priceless,” Mr Nelder said. “The sooner the person off the street does the course, the greater the effect will be. If they come across somebody who is struggling because of a mental health disorder or crisis they can help that person to stay safe until they can see a professional for appropriate treatment.” Mr Nelder said most people shy away from mental health issues because they have no idea what it is about or what to do. He believed in getting as many people to attend the course as possible and was happy that another course would be put on in Mareeba in the near future. “I would love to see mental health first aid courses as commonplace as ordinary first aid courses because we’re talking about an area

Festival finalists for state-wide award By Katherine Kokkonen MORE than a decade of hard work has seen the Mareeba Multicultural Festival Committee go in the running for a state-wide award. The committee is one of the finalists in the Premier’s Cultural Diversity Awards in the Outstanding Community Organisation (Regional) category. However, if the committee does win the award the members will be too busy to accept it; the award will be handed out on Saturday, August 30 – the same day the Mareeba Multicultural Festival is on. “If we win us the award, they can post it to us,” Chairman Mr Cordenos joked. Mr Cordenos has been chairman of the committee since it began and believed they deserved recognition for putting on a unique festival. The rising popularity of the festival has seen it more than double in size over its 16 years. “The committee deserve a pat on the back,” Mr Cordenos said. “It was a little thing in the beginning, about 12 stalls, and this year we have 36. The reason
people come is because there is nowhere where you can go to a festival for free and you can taste food from 36 different nationalities and where are you going to taste that? Not even in a restaurant.” The theme for the 16th Mareeba Multicultural Festival is celebrating cultural influences and as well as a wide variety of food, there will
be performances and music from different cultures. Every 15 minutes, a different act will perform with the cultures represented ranging from Fijian to South American. Mr Cordenos said the Zorba finale, which has been a fixture since the festival started, was a sight to see with the crowd joining in for the dance. “The secret is to combine all the different things together,” he said. “If you come on the day, you can see it from ten o’clock in the morning to the last act at five o’clock at night.” While 16 years is a long time to be chairman, Mr Cordenos won’t be stopping anytime soon. “I started at 59,” he said. “It is in my heart and I want to show the rest of the world that this is something unique; there are 64 different nationalities in Mareeba, 15 different religions, but on the day they are all there and there no fights— that is why it is beautiful in Mareeba.” To take part in all of the excitement, head to the Mareeba Multicultural Festival, at Arnold Park, on Saturday, August 30.

Book swap fundraiser By Katherine Kokkonen MAREEBA library is helping to turn the page on indigenous literacy by raising money through the Great Book Swap. For a gold coin donation, people will be able to swap an old book for another preloved treasure, with funds going to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The Foundation supplies resources and programs to help lift the rate of literacy in
indigenous communities. Statistics show that between 40 and 60 per cent of indigenous children in very remote locations achieve below the minimum Year 3 reading standard. Mareeba Library is hoping to help indigenous children buck the trend by hosting a number of programs, including a monthly playgroup story time. To take part in the Great Book Swap, head to Mareeba Library from 10am to 5pm, on Wednesday, September 3.

TREASURES from Ravenshoe families will take pride of place in the new Ravenshoe Heritage Gallery Museum. Ravenshoe Heritage Gallery Committee member and fundraiser Carol Austin said it was important to preserve the community’s history before valuable photographs disappeared. The idea to collect and exhibit old photographs was sparked when a committee member came across a woman burning her old photos because she believed no one would be interested in them. The committee arranged for descendents of original settlers of the area to loan out their photos, which were then professionally enlarged into prints. “The history of Ravenshoe is in the ex-
hibition and someone should preserve it before all the old people moved on,” Ms Austin said. “It will get lost, if we don’t.” Ravenshoe’s main street, Griggs Street, will feature as the opening theme of the exhibition. The street was named after one of the first Shire Chairmen, whose descendents Edgar and Geoff Grigg still run the Ravenshoe Highland Bakery. Ms Austin’s favourite photo shows a bullock team travelling down Griggs Street before bitumen was laid down. The gallery will be a permanent fixture of the centre. The exhibition also features a touch screen providing information on local families and their histories. The Ravenshoe Heritage Gallery Museum is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Admission is free.

PALMER United Party’s slogans might be “Reunite the nation” and “Bringing people together”, but the new Queensland leader of the party has called for North Queensland to break away from the rest of the state. PUP Queensland leader Carl Judge said a proposal for North Queensland’s independence from the southern region will be a major PUP policy in the lead-up to next year’s state election. While the concept of North Queensland becoming independent was not new, Mr Judge said but it did merit further investigation and deserved to be put to the people. “North Queensland has the industry and economic viability to be recognised as Australia’s official seventh state and should be able to govern itself through its own representation,” Mr Judge said. “The Palmer United Party believes there would be significant advantages to North Queensland’s self-government. The region has long been neglected by both the state and federal governments, yet it continues to act as a major economic centre and contributor to the Australian economy.” Mr Judge criticised the Newman government’s approach to reaching out beyond the southeast corner and believed the only way to genuinely develop North Queensland was through independence. “It is important to keep an open mind and consider the opportunities and to concentrate on the northern area of Queensland,” he said. “The artificial approach by Newman Government is short-term and more about politics than about the people.” However, Mr Judge’s call for independence has itself been criticised as a political move. Member for Cook David Kempton described Mr Judge’s proposal as ridiculous and as a grab for attention and votes. He said the idea of an independent North Queensland had “been around forever” and that PUP had “wheeled it out for their own purposes”. Mr Kempton questioned whether Mr Judge had even been to
North Queensland and said the region had been doing particularly well in regards to development, lower crime rates and representation at high levels of state government. “It’s populist and easy to put these things out but it is highly unlikely to happen,” he said. “This is not about good policy or good government, but about Clive Palmer grabbing the populist vote. He is desperate and down to one member (in state parliament), so he is appealing to an element of people in the north and west who traditionally haven’t felt well-represented.” Mr Kempton also questioned whether it would be feasible to have an independent North Queensland, especially considering the cost of setting-up another state. “This just creates another level of government, which is really unworkable. Where is the boundary and what becomes the capital; would it be Townsville or Cairns? Who would pay for this because it would cost billions of dollars to replicate parliament and the infrastructure,” he said. Mr Judge said he had deliberately left the proposal open-ended in regards to the where the capital city would be and the form the government would take because he wanted to start a dialogue with residents and form a consensus. In relation to the cost of establishing a new state, Mr Judge said the money spent would be a sensible investment that could propel North Queensland. “We are going to have a conversation with

the community—no one has got a pencil out and drawn a line for the boundary,” he said. “We would have significant consultation and significant planning and will be putting the facts on the table about the pros and cons in relation to it.” Mr Judge also said PUP would work closely with local government to ensure the best outcome for businesses and residents. However, Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore said he had not been approached by anyone in PUP about the issue and believed that Mr Judge’s proposal lacked substance. He pointed to Mr Judge’s lack of information on where a possible capital would be, the structure of government and how the move to independence would be funded. “If you have an idea and you throw it out on the street, it really should have some have some facts and figures—there should be a business case that the community can look at and understand,” Mayor Gilmore said. Mayor Gilmore said the proposal was a “thought bubble” that was being used to seek attention and possibly divert attention from other issues. He agreed with Mr Kempton that the proposal was nothing more than a grab for voters’ attention. “What we’re hearing from Clive Palmer is nothing more than ‘look at me, I’ve got a new idea and I want to be talked about’,” Mayor Gilmore said. “Next week it will be something else; when you have a butterfly for a mind, you never quite know where it is going to land.”

CLUB NEWS Mareeba Lions and Lionesses once again served up brunch as a service project to the hungry Cairns to Karumba bike riders. While sore bums and legs were the order of the day, the weather was beautiful if not a little hot and everyone enjoyed the break and the wonderful assortment of food on offer. The Mareeba High School Band put on a great display entertaining the crowd with some old favourites, which were very well received. Christmas in July was once again a hoot with the Lions serving up hundreds of the much sought after banana fritters. Once again, Dennis Howe from Howe Farming donated the bananas. Ian Adamson from the Mareeba BP depot also made a generous donation of fuel vouchers for the raffle, which was a hit with the travelling grey nomads. Partnering to End Measles. At last year's convention, LCIF partnered with the GAVI Alliance and committed to raising US$30 million for measles vaccinations by our 100th anniversary, in 2017. During the month of April, Lions had some exciting measles activities. World Immunization Week this year was a big success around the world. Lions and LCIF are committed to saving sight and preventing blindness where needed most. In China, blinding trachoma has affected eye health for many people. Through LCIF SightFirst grants, our Foundation is supporting the effort towards elimination of trachoma as a public health concern by 2016. The fight against trachoma and other eye diseases expands around the world. In May 2014, Lions Clubs International leadership and the Lions of Georgia (USA) joined former U.S. President and Lion Jimmy Carter in a signing ceremony to commemorate an expansion of the Lions-Carter Center SightFirst Initiative addressing the major causes of preventable blindness in Ethiopia, Uganda, Mali and Niger. This partnership also helped celebrate the elimination of river blindness in Colombia last year, a major milestone. Meeting Humanitarian Needs Globally. Numerous disaster relief grants have been awarded
throughout the world to address flooding, wildfires, tornadoes, earthquakes, landslides and other natural disasters. One notable disaster was Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. LCIF quickly mobilized tents, water filtration units and millions in donations to support those affected, and Lions remain on the ground assisting their communities by rebuilding homes. In addition to disaster relief, LCIF provided many grants for Lions' projects to support local communities. Projects that provided needed hospital equipment, built centres for blind and disabled community members, purchased mobile health units, constructed schools for children in developing countries and more—changing the lives of approximately 6.73 million people in the past year. The countdown is on for Tablelands Relay For Life It’s almost time for Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life so grab your friends, family and work colleagues, create a team and save the date – September 13 and 14, at Davies Park, Mareeba. Tablelands Relay For Life is an 18 hour event involving teams of up to 15 people keeping a baton moving in a relaystyle walk or run overnight, all in an effort to raise funds for the one in two Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Participants are showing their support for those affected by cancer and helping them through one of the most difficult times of their life. They make a difference by showing that those touched by the disease are not alone and by raising funds that will allow locals to access sup-
port and information while contributing to research breakthroughs. Together we are able to give hope for cancer survivors, hope for those who have lost loved ones, and hope for a cancer free future. With more than 1,200 Far North Queenslanders affected by cancer each year, now more than ever, we need the support of the community. All funds raised from Tablelands Relay For Life allow Cancer Council Queensland to continue its vital work in cancer research, early detection and prevention programs, and patient support services. Revving up for good time By Katherine Kokkonen THE thrum of engines will be mixed with laughter at the Mareeba Workers club 14th Annual Bike Show. Bike enthusiasts who cherish the freedom of the open road will converge at 3 Reynolds Street, on Saturday, August 23. However, the day is not just for those who love bikes, with a jumping castle, face painting and three live bands ensuring that the show provides fun for the whole family. The biggest bike show in North Queensland will see more than 200 motor-
cycles on display and a party atmosphere fill the grounds at the Workers Club. A passion for bikes can start at any time and even have humble origins. Committee member Trev Parrish’s enthusiasm for bikes started in his childhood. “My dad bought an autocycle when I was nine-years-old—it’s basically a pushbike with a motor in it and he paid $2 for it,” he said. “I’ve had bikes ever since then.” No matter how they got hooked on motorcycles, the bike enthusiasts have come together and found a sense of camaraderie at the Worker’s Club. The friendship is
based on freedom and the joy of being on the road. “It’s the exhilaration of being in open and in the wind,” Committee members Jim Lilly said. “It’s whatever blows your hair back” To join in on the fun, head to the Mareeba Workers Club 14th Annual Bike Show, on August 23. Gates open at noon and the party for adults only starts at 8pm. Jim Lilly and Trev Parrish are gearing up for a great day out at the Mareeba Workers club 14th Annual Bike Show.
S A L E Dr Rev Djiniyini chairman of ALPA NT and Member for Cook David Kempton at the opening of the new supermarket.
Supermarket for Cape York community The Indigenous community of Napranum on Cape York will now have better access to groceries following the opening of the community’s own supermarket. Member for Cook David Kempton said the project would provide the people of Napranum not only with a supermarket of its own, after many years of waiting, but full-time jobs. He said the supermarket was another project the community can proudly tick off its 10-year plan Jointly funded by the Queensland Government and Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council, the 550-square metre supermarket is the biggest ever built in a Cape York Indigenous community and will generate around 20 full-time and part-time jobs in Napranum. Until the supermarket came to town, the town’s 850 residents had been forced
to travel to Weipa to buy groceries and other essentials. The 15-20 minute road journey could turn into an expensive shopping expedition for those who rely on a taxi, with fares up to $100 for the round trip. “Most of us take it for granted that we have access to well-stocked supermarkets and can just nip down the road for a bottle of milk,” Mr Kempton said. “But for many Indigenous communities, this kind of convenience is regarded as a luxury.” The Napranum supermarket is a joint venture with Island & Cape and will supply groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy products and other general merchandise. The supermarket is another building block in Napranum’s 10-year plan for economic diversity and social change.

Mareeba Mazda and Mareeba Mitsubishi go green Mareeba Mitsubishi has launched Australia’s first-ever plug-in hybrid SUV. The Outlander is now available for you to test drive and see just how quiet and robust this full size family 4x4 really is. The Outlander PHEV is the cheapest plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in the Australian market and David Mete, dealer principal of Mareeba Mitsubishi, hopes it will appeal to more than just tech-savvy early adopters and the environmentally-conscious. Besides its green credential, the SUV packaging and capable drive train offers a combination of space, practicality, driveability and efficiency. Able to be driven exclusively under electric power for around 52km yet having the security of a range-extending petrol engine, the Outlander PHEV is expected to resonate with families wanting to lessen a reliance on petrol. The 12kW/h 300V battery costs between $3.00 and $3.60 to fully charge (which takes roughly five hours). David said “The majority of commuters, the 52km EV range would be enough to see them never having to resort to petrol power and even if they have to the vehicle runs at 1.9 L of fuel per 100 kilometres. ”If Mitsubishi can find enough bowser-weary customers willing to spend the extra dosh on its plug-in hybrid, the Outlander PHEV could become the most successful green car in this country yet.” David Mete has also just finished installing a 30KW solar power system featuring 120 solar panels to generate the power needed for the everyday running of the showroom and workshop. “What this means is we are making an effort to reduce gas emissions, looking after the environment and at the same time offsetting our power costs which is one of our major outgoing expenses. So what we generate we use,” Mr Mete said. The project used local Mareeba Installers Peter and Gino Avolio from Tableland Solar, who in turn accessed their solar panels through Outback Solar and Wind, thus keeping the entire fit out of the system in local hands.

With less than a month to go until the 2014 Tablelands Relay For Life, we have started counting down in anticipation! I want to thank the many residents who have already registered to participate, and I urge others to join us in celebrating cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost, and fighting back against a disease that takes too much away from our community. Your support truly does make a difference! Every dollar raised at Tablelands Relay For Life supports Cancer Council Queensland’s vital work in cancer research, and funds much-needed prevention, early detection and patient support programs. We know that last year Cancer Council Queensland invested $14.2 million into cancer research, and over $8.7 million into cancer support and information. With $4.48 million alone raised at Relay For Life events throughout Queensland in 2013, it goes to show the fundamental difference this event continues to have. This year, funds raised from Far North Queensland events like Relay For Life have been assigned to Queensland researchers, investigating areas of importance in each region. Through your support, Cancer Council Queensland is supporting research-

ers like Dr Stephen Wood, and his vital investigations into the role of specific proteins and how they can affect the development of skin cancers. Dr Wood’s research focuses on a protein called Usp9x, which coordinates and regulates several aspects of normal cell function. He found that the impairment of this protein, gives rise to a number of cancers including skin cancer. Using this information, Dr Wood is now looking to identify other key proteins which interact with Usp9x as a way to develop a prevention. More than 150 Far North Queenslanders are diagnosed with melanoma each year, and many more are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer. With Queensland having the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, this research adds to our collective work to beat cancer. Cancer Council Queensland can only continue to fund vital research, like the work of Dr Wood, with your support. Every step you take, and every dollar you raise, goes such a long way. Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on September 13-14 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register visit relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

Fourteen hundred years BCE, a tormented soul walked the earth that was neither man nor god. After twelve arduous labours and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back

on the gods finding his only solace in bloody battle. Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and presence of death. These men and women never question where they go to fight or why or whom, just how much they will be paid. Now the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time. It is time for this bunch of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen when they must train an army to become as ruthless and blood thirsty as their reputation has become.
When Moore Street market-trader Agnes Brown finds her livelihood under threat from a ruthless developer, she and her family embark on a campaign to save her stall, aided as only the Browns will be by a motley troop of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourettes Syndrome. Stars Bendan O'Carroll and Jennifer Gibney.

The LAND Fire project to battle weeds Bush Heritage Australia is performing helicopter surveys and fire work on Yourka Reserve in an effort to battle Lantana and Siam, one of the world’s worst tropical weeds. The project aims to improve habitat for plants, mammals and birds, including the Red goshawk, of which there are only about 700 breeding pairs left in the world. Siam weed is listed as a nationally significant environmental threat. Increased fire management work on Yourka Reserve will step up the fight against Siam and Lantana, using a combination of GPS mapping of locations, foot and horseback patrols and helicopter to achieve targeted burning, and tackle this major threat to north Queensland biodiversity. Siam weed and Lantana threaten the most productive ecological communities on Yourka Reserve, which sits in the Einasleigh Uplands, adjacent to the Wet Tropics. “At Yourka, fire is on the front line of our work; not only to control weeds but also to reduce the risk of intense, uncontrolled bushfires, and protect long unburnt habitat in this environment,” Reserve Manager Paul Hales said. “It also will help to reduce the mass

of Lantana which makes looking for Siam extremely difficult, apart from its own impact on the creek lines where it smothers out native vegetation. “By applying fire strategically, with a mixture of hotter, dryer and cooler, as well as wetter burns throughout the year, we can assist the regeneration of native shrub coverage and promote a varied understorey to improve habitat for woodland birds.” Siam weed is one of the world’s worst tropical weeds and is included in the Commonwealth’s Alert List for Environmental Weeds. It poses a serious threat to biodiversity that could degrade the values of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and it is also a threat for North Queensland’s agricultural properties. Two populations of the near threatened elusive Mareeba Rock wallaby have found safe refuge on Yourka Reserve. The thinning of the Lantana around their habitat will help improve their longterm security and prevent against large-scale fires that threaten their survival. A keen eye and sharp mind has taken an Atherton student all the way to the stud cattle judging state finals at the Ekka. Tyler Herlihy represented North Queensland in the young judges’ competition, earning fourth place and proving he could mix with the best in the state. The competition saw him come up against 11 other judges in the 15–25 year age group. Judging stud cattle involves critiquing the beasts for traits that a breeder would want to pass on through further generations. In the competition, Tyler looked for attributes such as structural soundness and development growth rate.

The 16-year-old had competed in local shows, earning his spot in the state finals at the Tully regional competition. Despite his experience as a judge, Tyler still found the competition in Brisbane to be very tough. “There are pretty high scores and marks compared to what you have in the local shows,” Tyler said. The Year 12 Atherton State High student was never interested in cattle until he started studying agriculture at high school. Now he has his sights set on entering the industry after he graduates. “The thing is, it is just for the joy of it and competing is an experience in itself and this has shown me where the industry can take you.”

Mossman Mill crushed 37,047 tonnes of cane at an average CCS of 13.24 for Week 13 of the 2014 crushing season. The factory had a major maintenance day during the week to maintain critical equipment and to reinstate the equipment taken off line a few weeks ago. A boiler tube leak late in the week resulted in a second steam off for the week, and a feed issue at No1 Mill limited the rate. The factory has now processed 373,588 tonnes of cane for the season at an average CCS of 12.41. The crop is cutting steadily at 98.5% of the original estimate. CRUSH STATISTICS: • Mossman tonnes crushed for the week: 37,047 tonnes • CCS for week: 13.24 • Total cane crushed to date: 373,588 tonnes • CCS average to date: 12.41 • 2014 crop estimate: 1,290,000 tonnes www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

Brothers pack Kids kick goals at Cup a punch
Drew and Tristan Cater went the distance in their boxing bouts in Babinda. By Katherine Kokkonen
Siblings are known for fighting, but two Mareeba brothers have taken it to the next level and battled it out in the ring. Trainer Paddy McClean was extremely proud of Drew and Tristan Cater and their performance at Babinda, on Saturday, August 9. While he might appear small in stature, Tristan Cater can pack a punch. The 12-year-old boxer showed that he was a quick learner, winning a rematch against a Townsville opponent who beat him almost a year ago. “He won every round and absolutely cleaned him up,” McClean said. “The hairs on my arms were standing up because I was so proud of him. He’s my little mate and he is going to be a champion—he was awesome.” His opponent had 4.5kg on Tristan, but the judges ruled in his favour in every round. McClean said during the past year they worked on technique, with Tristan’s straight left coming into play and winning the bout for him.
Tristan’s older brother, Drew, also fought in Babinda and while he put up a valiant effort, he lost against the Tasmanian champion. The Queensland Bantam weight champion’s fight went the distance to three rounds, with his opponent winning on points. McClean said Drew, 16, was spirited in his boxing, but was just edged out by the Tasmanian champion. He said Drew had come a long way since he first donned boxing gloves four years ago, but the well-drilled Tasmanian opponent managed to knock him off his game plan and capitalise on mistakes. “We were competitive in every round, but we were slightly overshadowed by a very good fighter,” McClean said. “We hurt him a couple of times and nearly beat him.” For now the brothers are hard at training and looking forward to a possible rematch at the end of the year. “We’ve already started fixing up our little mistakes that we did during the night,” McClean said.
Mareeba State School girls captains, Wayne Srhoj, St Thomas’ boys captains and star performer Hannah Geary at the Wayne Srhoj Cup. By Katherine Kokkonen
Students have had a ball at the second Wayne Srhoj Cup, proving that the home-grown soccer talent is as strong as ever. The cup, held on Friday, gave Mareeba State School and St Thomas students a chance to showcase their fancy footwork and have fun. The Mareeba State School girls’ team won a tough match against St Thomas, taking out the title 2–0, while the St Thomas boys won decisively 3–0 against Mareeba State School. Mareeba State School PE teacher and Wayne Srhoj Cup convener Daniel Samanes said students were hit with football fever ahead of the cup and that it was something they looked forward to every year. “I know that with my kids at school they are just buzzing in the weeks leading-up and are always at my
office asking when we are having training,” he said. Mr Samanes said while there was some rivalry between the schools the cup was more an opportunity for the kids to play soccer and potentially develop a love of the sport. “With the girls especially, they don’t play soccer on a club basis and this encourages them to take part in a new sport and hopefully in a couple years time they might join a local club,” he said. Wayne Srhoj was impressed by the competition at the cup, which was inspired by his childhood experiences playing soccer in Mareeba. “I think it brings a lot of the kids together that normally wouldn’t associate with each other in school,” he said. “It gives them a sense of being part of a team and it is good to see.”
SPORT RESULTS & DRAWS TABLELAND HOCKEY Round up 16 August 2014 – With only two rounds of hockey now left to play before semi’s games are being fiercely contested. The U10’s round robin continues to be a great battle with 2014 Minor Premiers to close to call. In the first game Raiders fought gallantly against top of the ladder All Stars. A great goal by Adam Keevers put the Raiders ahead with All Stars unable to come back. Raiders backed up against a full strength Sharks with Andrew Earl, Oliver May and Daniel Genge showing just how much they have improved this year holding Raiders to a nil all draw. Sharks then tackled All Stars in the final game of the day. Dane Reis scored a brilliant goal which put the Raiders ahead by one and although the All Stars supported by Kevin Elliott, Ryleigh Shethan and Leah MacCallum fought hard to even the score Raiders held out for a 1/0 win. Anita Curcio, Catriona Boyd and Georga Rivett took on the might of the Vikings in a closely contested U13 fixture. With Brendan Draper putting the only goal in the box for the Vikings they were lucky to hold the Scorchers out for a 1/0 win. The Troopers with the help of Clem Lucey and Ian Houghton were dominant on the field against the All Stars. Unable to respond to 3 great goals the All Stars ably supported by Frankie Constance, Abbie Toshach and Renae Graig were gallant in defeat. The U17 Comp continues to be entertaining. All Stars had a resounding win over an understrength Jaguars with Erin Muller and a number of her team being dominant in the box. Voodoos played a great game against the Boys Rep team holding them to a 2 all draw. In the final match of the day Totally Tilted played off against the Bombers gallantly going down 6/0. The leader board is extremely tight with only a few points separating the top three teams. The Veterans teams of Waterloo and Woteva fought a hard game to eventually have a score of 1/nil in favour of Waterloo. Lydia Purdy scored the only game of the match. Plastered Vets outclassed Holcim in a 5/1 win. Deb Grimshaw was absolutely superb in the box with a personal haul of 4 goals. Karen Dunstan was able to put a goal away for the Holcim team but could not match the might of the Plastered Vets. The leader board is extremely tight with only 1 point between the top 2 contenders. The next 2 rounds will determine the minor premiers but again this is too close to call. The Ladies classics saw top of the ladder Belair retain their winning streak playing against Cruisers with Katrina Lange being the main scorer for Belair. In the last game of the day neither Shooters or Pluckers could assert their dominance eventually battling it out for a nil all draw. Juniors in footy finals
Damian Avolio second from right with his Australian Team mates
Mareeba youngster Damian Avolio recently represented Australia as part of a team that took part in the USA Regional Futsal Championships, held at Anaheim Convention Centre, Los Angeles. Even though the Australian under 11s failed to get out of the group stages, with two losses and a win, the team gained precious exposure to the high intensity and speed of international competition. The tour started in San Francisco, where the team played a number of warm-
up games against teams from older divisions. Damian’s father, Luciano, said it was a great experience for his son and the team. “It was a real learning curve for the boys, they played against very high quality opposition and the matches they lost were very close encounters,” he said. “It was an opportunity to see where the boys were at and the coaches were very pleased at how competitive they were.”
Cairns and District Junior Rugby League Finals will be held over the next few weeks, with the Mareeba Gladiators featuring prominently in three of the five competitive divisions under 11s, 12s and 13s. When the Gladiators made the decision to participate in the CDJRL two years ago club officials were confident their teams would be competitive. In only their second year in three of the five competitive age groups, Mareeba juniors came in first or equal first at season’s end. Some 220 Mareeba juniors don the green and gold across 10 teams in both non-competitive and competitive divisions and the junior committee have no regrets in making the switch from Eacham to Cairns. The club’s motto is to foster young boys to be team players and

Book honours everyday footy heroes
The Far North Queensland team took on Great Britain on June 23, 1962 at Parramatta Park, in Cairns. By Katherine Kokkonen
Small town heroes who carried their communities’ hopes on the footy field will be honoured in a book tracing the history of rugby league in northern Queensland. Tony Price’s third book about rugby league, More than the Foley Shield, will cover the history of the game from 1908 to 2013 and will include stories of the great Eacham, Mareeba, Mareeba Wests and Millaa Millaa teams that
won in Townsville. The book, due to be published in September, will also include more than 300 pen portraits of great players from Ola Olsen, who played six games for Queensland in 1908, to Jonathon Thurston. “There are guys who played for Australia in 25 tests, and there are guys who played only one game for their town, but to me they are all the same,” Mr Price said. “People are always talking about a hero. We have heroes of all sizes, Mareeba, Eacham, all
had their time in the sun and all have had good players.” Mr Price said rugby league was a great equaliser and you could ask the average person on the street, in Mareeba, who was the best player in 1938 and “heaps of people” would know who it was. “It’s a sport for the average working man, it’s a sport that is played by everyone, whether you cannot or can play,” he said. Mr Price found so much information while researching his previous two books on rugby league that he felt compelled to write a third book. The name of the book derives from the Foley Shield, the inter-town competition started in 1948. “It’s a strange name, the reason I thought of it is because if people think about north Queensland rugby league, they think of two things in this day and age: the North Queensland Cowboys and the Foley shield,” he said. “Rugby league has been in Queensland for over 100 years, it’s about more than the Foley Shield; it’s about your small places, Julia Creek, Mareeba, Proserpine and Mount Isa.” If you can assist Tony Price with any information, please contact him on 0427 451 913.
Bulls beaten in hangover game The Stratford Dolphins remain the only side in the FNQ Premier League to take points off the premiership winning Bulls with a tough, and at times ugly, 2-1 win. The Bulls, who were perhaps still recovering from last week’s premiership win, played like a side with little to play for in the first half, compared with the home side, who came out with guns blazing and put two past the Bulls inside the opening 20 minutes. The Bulls, though, could have counted themselves a little unlucky with a strong penalty claim waved away and striker Anthony Mete missing a golden opportunity, before the Dolphins even had a shot at goal. However when the Dolphins did have opportunities, they made them count with two absolute bullets going past Bulls’ custodian Julian. Both a copy of each with route one direct football using the strengths of the Dolphins’ two battering rams Greg Darbyshire and Michael Van Hooren, catching Bulls’ left back Larry Maggio and a goal each from the pair went flying past Madrid’s near post. At halftime, Bulls coach Alex Srhoj urged
his chargers to just “turn up” and show the fight and character they are known for. The halftime instructions looked to spark the away side into action and within the opening 15 minutes of the second period the Bulls should have drawn level or at least got one goal, but Srhoj along with striking pair Anthony Mete and Elliot Gardner were unable to convert numerous chances and Dolphins’ keeper Angelo Serafin pulled some outstanding saves. As Srhoj came off, the Bulls lost some way for a period, but after substitute Simeon Malahoff scored with 15 to go, it was all the Bulls with coach Srhoj losing count of the number of clear chances his side let slip. Meanwhile the Dolphins where left to a couple of counterattacking raids with speedster Maclean Simpson their main weapon, but the Bulls could not find the breakthrough. “All credit to the Dolphins, they wanted it more than us and we paid for it. I would not say it was the most enjoyable form of football, but it was effective for them,” Srhoj said. “But like the last time we played them, we cannot seem to put them away. We probably
had 15 to 20 good chances tonight; I think they had six, but they scored two, and that’s what counts.” The results for the Dolphins means they could finish second with a possible third match-up against the Bulls. Srhoj laughed off the suggestion that Stratford was their bogey team and they would prefer not to play against them. He said every game was different and the Bulls would not be caught wanting if they did meet again. “Of course I guess they would have some level of confidence, but so do we,” he said. “We have faith that on any given day we can beat anyone in the league, and if anything we hope to meet them again to right the wrongs of tonight.” Having the clinched the premiership in both the premiers and reserve grade divisions, the Bulls will now represent FNQ at the prestigious Crad Evans Shield, being held in Townsville, on October 11. Mareeba United Football Club is now taking expressions of interest from all members and supporters who like to attend the event. The club will be organizing trans-
Seahawks swoop on Gladiators By Katherine Kokkonen
THE Yarrabah Seahawks had to go into full flight to beat out the Mareeba Gladiators 24-22, in a tough game on Saturday night. The Gladiators scored first, but the Yarrabah Seahawks soon retaliated, with unforced errors and holes in the Gladiators defence seeing the visiting team take a halftime two point lead. The second half again saw the Gladiators come out fighting and score the first try to take the score to 16-12 in the home side’s favour. However, the Seahawks came storming back to win the match. Gladiators coach Cameron McPherson said he was pretty impressed by his team’s efforts, but questioned the referee’s decisions. “It was our game to win, but similar to last week’s game in the last 20 minutes,” he said. “The ref gave us nothing at all and it’s been disappointing the last two weeks. This happens when the refereeing changes in the first 60 minutes to the last 20 minutes.” McPherson gave credit to Yarrabahand and said the Gladiators would now be looking to make the most of their last game at home against Tully. “We have to move on to the belief that we can do it next season,” he said.
