Wranglings over church By Boyd Robertson Mareeba Uniting Church’s council of elders have entered into negotiations with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) who want to enter the building into the Queensland Heritage Register. The elders are concerned that maintaining the church to Heritage conditions would be unaffordable. Built in 1960, the church is already showing its age, with warped timbers and a roof replacement already setting the church back thousands. Reverend Peter Blauw said the elders needed surety that the listing wouldn’t hamstring the church. “We have kept it to standards as much as we can but buildings like this aren’t designed to stand up forever – it does need some maintenance using the original materials from its construction and there would be a lot of costs involved,” Rev
Blauw said. “We do recognise that the building is unique but a church has to be able to move into the future.” The elders also plan to modernise features of the church such as adding a projector screen, moving the seats and installing air conditioning, but the building’s proposed listing would complicate those plans. Rev Blauw said the church has entered into negotiations with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) to find a solution that “everyone is happy with”. “Our initial reaction was that none of us wanted to have anything to do with this,” he said. “But we have decided to work with the government toward a solution that is amenable to both parties.” EHP heritage director Fiona Gardiner said that any major alterations to the church would have to have to be approved by the department, but alterations for “liturgical purposes” were allowed. “While most types of proposed changes to

Queensland heritage places are regarded as development and need to be assessed by the department, some types of minor repair and maintenance work do not require approval,” she said. “Under the Queensland Heritage Act no development approval is required for work to the building that is for liturgical purposes.” The Express understands the rules covering alterations to the building will be determined in the negotiations. The Mareeba Uniting Church was nominated by EHP after being identified through a statewide heritage survey for buildings with historic architectural qualities. The church was constructed in 1960 by renowned Cairns architect Eddie Oribin, who has also designed churches in Innisfail, Babinda, Proserpine and Gordonvale. It has been selected by EHP for proposed entry into the Register as an example of the evolution of Methodist church design in Queensland after
World War II. The church is owned by the Uniting Church in Australia Property Trust, which has its Queensland offices based in Brisbane. Tablelands Regional Council offered no objection to the listing ahead at their August 15 meeting. “I’ve always said that it’s none of our business if the land owners are supportive of an entry into the Register or are opposed to it,” Acting Mayor Evan McGrath said. In 2007 the Church’s elders at the time objected to a similar request by EHP to enter the church into the Register. Council supported the church and objected as well, leading the application to be withdrawn. EHP have also applied to enter the Mareeba Shire Hall on the Register. Council has so far resisted the push by EHP, arguing that “Council is capable of managing and protecting the heritage values of the Mareeba Shire Hall without the need for the proposed entry into the Queensland Heritage Register.”

he Atherton Maize Festival is well under way, with new and returning events this year and a bevy of beautiful young women jostling to be crowned Maize Queen. For the first time, a Fun Run at Mt Baldy on August 18 with about 40 entrants featured in this year’s Festival, while the much-loved corn husking competition returns from past years to be run at the Mardi Gras street parade on August 30. The Festival’s organisers hope to make the Fun Run into a prominent event for following years. In partnership with fast-food chain McDonalds, the Festival will also run a corn cob decorating competition for the region’s school children, with prizes on offer for the winners. A Cabaret Night on August 24 at Merrilands Hall
will be another opportunity for the Queen Entrants to introduce themselves to the public, in addition to offering lucky door prizes, raffles and an auction while local band The Fireflies entertain the crowd. Races at the Tolga Race Course on August 25 will raise funds for the Carinya Home for the Aged, while the Festival’s photography competition is on again, the results of which can be seen at ANZ Bank in Atherton from August 26 to 30. The whole Festival will culminate in downtown Mardi Gras street parade through Main Street in Atherton on August 30. Entry for floats will be open until the day before the parade, with a $500 prize for the best float. The Maize Festival Queen entrants made their first official appearance at the VP Day Memorial on August 11, taking a ride in restored antique vehicles. They will be competing for three top spots - the

Designer Sally Blanch’s Pure Dust shirts will be worn by protection clowns at the ABCRA Tamworth rodeo finals next year. Protection clown Teddy Simpson and his colleagues have been instrumental in promoting the Pure Dust brand.
A budding Tableland country clothing label will be worn by rodeo protection clowns in front of a national audience next year. Pure Dust is a female-oriented clothing line created by designer and country girl Sally Blanch from Mareeba. Ms Blanch recently landed a sponsorship deal with the Australian Bushman Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA) to equip their protection clowns with her distinctive bright pink Pure Dust shirts during the bull ride events at the ABCRA national finals in Tamworth in January next year. The deal also provides for a Pure
Dust stall and three plugs for the label on the PA system per day at the event, which was attended last year by about 10,000 people last year, and is held right next to the massively popular Tamworth Country Music Festival. There are three nights of junior bull rides and four nights of senior bull rides at the finals, and the show’s two protection clowns will be walking billboards for Pure Dust through those events. The clothes are manufactured on the Gold Coast and Ms Blanch sells them over the Internet, using a Facebook page and website. Ms Blanch said demand for the label has grown enormously since she first established it and that the ABCRA

finals deal is certain to increase that demand even further. “The label’s going absolutely mad,” she said. “There’s going to be thousands of eyes at these finals, and of course thousands of dollars with them.” Protection clowns have formed a central and innovative way for Ms Blanch to promote her business, first partnering up with Mareeba bullfighter Teddy Simpson for the Mt Garnet Rodeo in May. “The protection clowns are pretty much our feature – they have helped enormously,” Ms Blanch said. “They’re out there in the arena longer than the riders, and they do a very, very important job.”

he coalition has confirmed it will overhaul Australia’s aged-care system but three weeks out from the Federal Election were not in a position to specify what changes will be made or when. Shadow Minister for Ageing Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells was the guest speaker at an aged care forum, organised by LNP candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin, at the Atherton International Club on August 14. A crowd of about 85, mostly older Tableland residents and workers in the aged-care sector, attended the forum which was marketed as a chance to hear “the coalition’s plans for ageing and aged care”. Ms Fierravanti-Wells announced the coalition would establish a “high-level steering committee” that would consult with a “broad spectrum” of the sector and establish an Aged Care Provider Agreement. “We wanted to engage in reform of the system but we wanted to do it as part of an agreement and this morning I outlined how that agreement process could operate,” she said. “One of the problems that we have seen in the past in the aged care sector is that it has basically been dictated to from above. We believe that if
you are going to reform the sector you need to do it together.” Pressed on what specific reforms would be on the agenda of the steering committee, Ms Fierravanti-Wells said: “We don’t want to pre-empt what would be in any negotiated agreement.” “We have indicated we will establish a high level steering committee that will work with us to implement our agreement. We have said we would like the agreement in place within a relatively short period of time and I indicated the first of July next year.”
Ms Fierravanti-Wells addressed the crowd for about 45 minutes before opening the forum up to questions from the floor. The majority of her speech centred on the Productivity Commissions’ 2011 report Caring for Older Australians which contained 58 recommendations to reform the aged care system. “Within a system that needs major reforms the Government have only cherry picked at this report and not given it the full and robust consideration it deserved,” Ms Fierravanti-Wells said. Ms Fierravanti-Wells said changes that would
‘No evidence’ of dog fights By Ryan Groube POLICE have vehemently denied there are illegal dog fighting rings operating on the Tableland. A series of media reports published in the past month suggested thieves were targeting family pets to use in dog-fights. Senior Sergeant at Atherton Police Station Richard Trotter said police had “no evidence at all” to suggest that was the case. On Monday, a public meeting was held at Merrilands Hall in Atherton to address growing community concern. “We have very little actual evidence on dog thefts and no reports at all of dog fights,” he said. “We will be using
the meeting to allay fears that there is a great dog fighting ring going around.” Herberton local, Doctor Karshonia Carnegie chaired the meeting. Last week, Doctor Carnegie told The Express that the communities concerns about their dog’s welfare were legitimate but in her experience all reports of dog fighting were based on “Chinese whispers” than any hard evidence. “I kept hearing dozens and dozens of stories that were following a similar pattern of dogs being taken and I thought it was time to have a public meeting about it,” she said. “[As for dog fighting] it appears to be based on hearsay rather than anything else.”

Again, Ms Fierravanti-Wells said that these changes were not Coalition policy and would only be “considered” as part of the Aged Care Provider Agreement. Fielding questions from the floor, attendees raised concerns about; the lack of an aged care facility in Mossman, the difficulty accessing care in remote areas, specifically Croydon and hospital beds being taken up by people who should be in nursing homes. Ms Ikin conceded that it would have been nice for attendees to have been given more detail but having Ms FierravantiWells travel to the Tableland was invaluable. “This forum was an opportunity to ensure that the people making critical decisions understand the needs of the people here,” she said. “I have spoken to thousands of people in the past couple of months and when I mentioned aged care there is always an immediate emotional reaction.” Ms Ikin said if the coalition was elected her job would be to ensure that the steering committee was aware of the issues of Kennedy as the Aged Care Provider Agreement.

The opening of a specialised swing in Mareeba will brighten the days of the region’s disabled people, thanks to a three-way donation from the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC), Bendigo Bank and Variety – the Children’s Charity of Queensland. The new Liberty Swing installed in Centenary Park was opened by acting TRC Mayor Evan McGrath. The swing, which is designed to accommodate wheelchair-bound or mobility-impaired people, allows them the enjoy the sensation of swinging safely. The star of the opening was 21-year-old Mareeba resident Dylan Wright, who suffers from cerebral palsy. His mother Nicki said the swing’s installation was certain to improve Dylan’s life and the lives of his carers. “He was smiling and excited up there on the swing,” she said. “It means now there is another way that he can participate in things with everyone else. The $25,000 swing was paid for by equal donations from the TRC, the Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank branches and Variety – the Children’s Charity of Queensland.

New performing groups will add to the celebrations at the Mareeba Multicultural Festival on August 24. The Morobe Cultural Dance Group will perform three traditional Papua New Guinean dances from Morobe Province at this year’s festival for the first time. The 20-strong group, who are composed of members from three different areas of Morobe (including the capital city of Lae) will try to compress the complex performances down to a 10-minute presentation for the Festival.
Group member Masio Nidung said the group had to choose songs from the dozens of languages spoken in Morobe province. “There are two languages in Morobe - ‘Yabem’ and ‘Kâte’ - that are what we call church languages, so they are spoken more,” Ms Nidung said. “We are using Yabem for two songs and one language from the island of Siassi for the third. “Papua New Guinea culture is like the Indigenous here in Australia in that they have a culture based on oral history – so the singing and dancing depict stories about our people and things like love.”
Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, with more than 800 languages spoken in a population of about six million. Cairns-Lae Sister City Program representative Olive Tau Davies helped organise the dance group together for the Cooktown Festival in June. “Although the group originally came together to celebrate the connection between Lae and Cairns, they have taken the opportunity to perform on their own now and will be promoting Morobe, Lae and the cultures there,” she said. Ms Nidung said the group was keen to perform in Mareeba.

ON a cloudless winter day, thousands flocked to the Mareeba airport for the annual Warbird Wings and Classic Cars Airshow. During four non-stop hours of flying, World War II planes shared the skies above Mareeba with a former Red Bull racing aircraft, low level fire bombers and the surprise packet of the show a Pitts Special. The innocuous orange aircraft, piloted by Andrew Biggs, thrilled the crowd with a series of wild aerobatic moves including dives, barrel purposefully - rolls 1 and 2 0 1 3 - 0 8 -stalling 1 3 T the 1 2 engine : 2 4 :after 5 0
steep ascents. There was plenty of action on the ground as well with a classic car rally and military vehicles on display as well as a collection of Harley Davidson motorbikes. The mighty DC-3 also got its annual tune up; with one of the two engines firing to life in fits and starts punctuated by small bursts of flame that drew collective gasps from the crowd. Crowd numbers were down slightly in 2013 but were still predicted to be well above 5000. Airshow organiser Mike Spaulding said despite the slightly lower turnout the event had +been 1 0a:success. 0 0

Our aim is to raise money for Cancer Research and we look forward to seeing people from all over the North. Recently we had a stall at the Christmas in July festivities together with the Mareeba Lions Club. We made lamingtons, and for the first time we made pumpkin soup. It was a great day with hundreds of people popping in and savoured our tasty menu. Last month Mareeba Lionesses enjoyed a trip to Cooktown with the Lions Club. We all had a wonderful time and look forward to doing this again in the not too distant future. The Mareeba Lioness Club will assist the Tableland Regional Council with bingo at the Annual Senior morning which will be held on Monday, August 19 at Mareeba International Club. he Liberal National Party’s replacement for Barnaby Joyce in the senate toured the Tableland last week to discuss the concerns of primary producers in the lead-up to the Federal Election. Barry O’Sullivan last week met with leaders of the banana and sugar cane industries on the Tableland in a bid to “get my head around” some of the issues. Mr O’Sullivan has a background in business and said it was important to him that he got to all the “whistlestops” in far north Queensland. “The trip was used to get an understanding about what producers are doing and what their challenges are so I can properly represent them in this part of the state,” he said. “The common issue is about input costs. Their receipted income is just not keeping up with costs of things like electricity and the carbon tax.” Mr O’Sullivan singled out labour shortages impacting the banana industry should conditions on 457 visas be altered as well as the ongoing threats of imported product.

Bullocks to Export Slaughter gained 2 c/ kg and Cows sold to the Export Processors rose substantially in quality and condition to be 27 c/ kg dearer than a fortnight ago. Bulls to Slaughter have remained unchanged to average around 85c/ kg.

The threat of foreign ownership, the dilution of Queensland Sugar Limited and soaring irrigation costs were the biggest challenges facing the sugar cane industry, according to Mr O’Sullivan. Hesaid he fully understood the importance the agriculture sector played in the economy of far north Queensland. “If you lose any one of these industries it would be devastating. Almost like stalling a plane. If you took one out of a district the others won’t just be able to struggle along on their own,” he said. “I am going to camp out here with Senator [Ian] McDonald until some of the issues [facing these industries] are resolved.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said it was good the senator had made the time to visit the Tableland. “He [Mr O’Sullivan] is on a massive learning curve in regards to our industry and really this trip was just a fact finding mission for him. He certainly made the right sounds on some of the issues.”
Malanda Small farms field days on again FOLLOWING the successful launch of the Malanda Small Farms Field Day in 2012, organisers have set a date for 2013. The event will be held on October 12 at the Malanda Showgrounds from 9am until 4pm and will feature market stalls, exhibitions, competitions, guest speakers as well as displays of the latest farm machinery and equipment. Popular events from the inaugural field day will return in 2013 including a celebrity goat milking competition as well as a competition for rural innovators. New events in 2013 include the “Home Cheesemakers Competition” and the “Homemade Country Tea Cosy Competi-
tion” as well as more events which will be announced as the event draws nearer. Field Day committee chairman Ray Byrnes said anyone interested at displaying at the event needed to register by September 27. “Taking on board the public demand to create an even greater successful Small Farms Field Day, we are sending out the call for stall holders, exhibitors and innovative speakers out there that would like to share their knowledge and sell their services and merchandise,” he said. Open for business Rehabilitation centre opened Shanty Creek Therapeutic Community, an alcohol and drug residential support service for Indigenous people in the far north, was officially opened on August 13. The rehabilitation centre is run by the Queensland Drug and Alcohol Council, which is part of the not-for-profit Lives Lived Well group. Lives Lived Well chief executive Mitchell Giles and Member for Cook David Kempton opened the facility. “There is strong and ongoing demand for our alcohol and drug treatment services and we are passionate about delivering them,” Mr Giles said. Mr Kempton said it was vital to provide facilities that
offered hope to those who have suffered alcohol and drug abuse in a non-institutionalised setting. "What this community offers is opportunity with responsibility - people have an opportunity to take responsibility for themselves, an opportunity to be a part of a community and most importantly an opportunity to be involved in their treatment and in the rest of their lives," he said. The Shanty Creek Therapeutic Community opened in May 2012 to provide a tailored alcohol and other drugs treatment program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged over 18 years.
Fabio Petruza forked out $100 to be the first person to enjoy a frosty beer at the official opening of the Carriers Arms Hotel. The two-storey pub, which stood where The Ant Hill is today, was a focal point of the community in Mareeba’s early years, attracting ringers, railway gangs, drifters and parliamentarians. Mr Petruza, who assisted in the construction of the building, said: “It is a great pleasure to be the first person to have a beer at this pub but I don’t think I will be spending $100 on a beer again.” “I helped design the front of the hotel and helped work on the roof but I was just a helper. I just did what I was told.” About 80 people attended the opening ceremony which included speeches from Mary Thompson, who compiled a history of the hotel, as well as Pat Mason who was a bar tender there in the late 1940s.

Mr Petruza forked out a green bill for an ice-cold stubbie of XXXX Gold as part of the official opening of the Carriers Arms Hotel at the Mareeba Heritage Centre on August 17. As winner of an auction, conducted by former Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Mick Borzi, Mr Petruza was given the chance to be the first person to enjoy a brew in the replica hotel. The Carriers Arms Hotel was an institution in Mareeba from 1892 until it was destroyed in a fire in 1952.

St Anthony’s is Making a Difference Students, parents and staff at St Anthony’s Parish School, Dimbulah celebrated this year’s Catholic Education Week in style with several events being held throughout the week.
This year’s theme, ‘Making A Difference – Inspired By Jesus’, was central to the celebrations with students collecting non-perishable items to donate to St Vincent De Paul during the annual whole school mass for Catholic Education Week. Families and parishioners then gathered for a pasta and games night with all proceeds from the evening being donated to Rosies in Mareeba. Rosies is an organization that aims to provide friendship and practical support to some of the most abandoned people in society. Volunteers try to build friendships. By spending time with, listening to and
talking to young people. Students presented Rosies with a cheque for $400 which was accepted by coordinators, Joe and Ann Serra. Ann said that they were thrilled with the donation which would be used to purchase more chairs and food items. Students spent all day Thursday preparing food for the Grandparent’s (and Parent’s) Morning Tea that was held at the school on Friday morning. St Anthony’s staff were also recognised during the week with three staff members receiving nominations for Spirit of Catholic Education Awards and two staff members recognised for over 30 years service to Catholic Education in the Diocese of Cairns. The week wrapped up with a prayer service and certificates being presented to every child for their generous contributions to helping others.

Arci reflects on 2013 It is only his second year of coaching and it is quite an achievement to have reached the finals in both years. Mareeba-Malanda Eels C Grade coach Darren Ball should also be congratulated for winning the minor premiership. Darren has had the boys on top of the ladder all year and playing great football. It is a credit to Darren for this is also his second year of coaching and second year of reaching the final five. This season also marks the second year the Eels have played under the banner of the Gladiators. Sioni and the Under 18s boys deserve a lot of praise for trying hard and battling all year even though they don’t have a lot of wins to show for it. Despite that, they turned up to training and games every week and played some very good football along the way. I’d like to thank the Under 18s for their courageous efforts in 2013. Everyone at the club sees and appreciates those efforts. It has been a great year for the ‘Gators, winning two minor premierships and getting three sides into the finals. I can’t think of a better way to thank our sponsors, supporters and the community than playing finals football. Our support is second to none and I am sure that will continue in the finals.

Reserves minor prems By David Grainer On behalf of the Mareeba Gladiators A Reserve team, coached by myself, managed by Daniel Kavea and captained by Glen ‘Dulla’ Williams, we would like to thank the Mareeba rugby league community for their ongoing support during the 2013 season. Our biggest accomplishment so far would have to be going through the first round undefeated. Our first loss of the year came in the second round but our record is 18 wins and one loss which is a great achievement for the boys. The CDRL have confirmed that we are minor premiers so congratulations to the boys. They have earned it. Our job is far from over. We will take it week by week during the finals series. How we got to be minor premiers comes down to de-
termination, desire, discipline, hard training and teamwork. During the season we formed a tight-knit group that went from mateship to brotherhood. When we play our games we play as a team, we play for our brother beside us, we play for our injured brothers - Que Tokarahi and Dwayne Williams - and we play for the pride of wearing the green and gold jersey, as well as the supporters. We are motivated by the possibility of playing and winning a grand final, something a Reserve grade side from this club hasn’t achieved in 22 years. The majority of the boys have fathers and uncles that were part of the winning side in 1991 and hopefully we can do those past players, our supporters and our club proud by bringing home the trophy and writing our own page in the history of the ‘Gators. It would be great to see as many of our supporters at our first semi at Barlow Park on September 1. Go the ‘Gators.
This year started off with the signing of Rod Jensen as captain/coach of the ‘Gators. It was, and has been, Rod’s ambition to get the Gladiators into the finals, a huge task given the team finishing ninth in 2012. All year the Gladiators have been in the hunt for a top five finish. The team has beaten every other side in the competition with the exception of the Kangaroos. Rod, and assistant coach Todd Rowe, have done an excellent job in the commitment, support and advice he has shown and given throughout the year. The players also should be commended for the hard work that they have put in since November last year, especially when you consider that we have lost about nine or 10 quality players through injuries. Reserve grade coach David Grainer has once again guided his team to the finals. This year they have gone a step further and taken out the minor premiership. I would like to pass on my congratulations to David, ‘Doc’, and the rest of the boys for working very hard throughout the year. A lot of credit should go to David.
Rubgy league finals to remain in Cairns: CDRL By Ryan Groube The operations manager of Cairns and District Rugby League (CDRL) Pat Bailey said finals will never be played anywhere other than at Barlow Park. The stance means that rugby league fans in Mareeba, Atherton, Tully, Innisfail, Yarrabah, Mossman and Port Douglas are unable to barrack for their teams at home in the finals, regardless of where their side finished during the regular season. Barlow Park is deemed by the CDRL to be a “neutral venue” despite being about five kilometres away from the home grounds of Cairns clubs, Kangaroos, Brothers and Ivanhoe’s. Barlow Park is almost 70 kilometres away from Davies Park.
As the regular season came to a close at the weekend, the Mareeba Gladiators Reserves finished four wins clear of their nearest rivals, Cairns Kangaroos, to claim the minor premiership. Despite the ‘Gators dominance, the archaic finals system ensures that Mareeba will not receive any home ground advantage in the post season. Gordonvale-based Southern Suburbs are set to finish the A Grade season in the top-two, but will relinquish any home ground advantage in the finals where their likely opponents will be Cairns-based clubs. Ms Bailey said the issues of where finals are played often came up at this time of the year. “Finals will never be played any-
where else but at a neutral venue,” she said. “Barlow Park has been our neutral venue for many years. This has been bought up before and hit on the head.” Clubs not based in Cairns have privately harboured ambitions of hosting finals for years but have been unwilling to challenge the CDRL. Suburbs president Stephen Harries said: “All clubs would want the chance to have a home ground advantage in the finals but to get that we’d have to go through the CDRL.” “Under the CDRL banner this is how it has always been but times chance at I think it is worth the discussion.” An Innisfail Brothers committee member declined to comment to The

Mr Walker said although in the National Rugby League (NRL) the grand final was always played in Sydney, teams that finished higher on the ladder had the opportunity to play in front of their fans in the semi-finals. “In the NRL, the top teams earn a home semi. In this competition the regional clubs lose all home ground advantage before the finals even begin,” he said. “If we had a finals game at our home ground we’d get three or four thousand through the gates. It would mean everything to us.” The secretary of Edmonton Storm, whose home venue is Barlow Park, Kay Oliver said it was worth at least
having the discussion about where finals are played. ‘Gators president John Arcidiacono said all the clubs in the competition knew how finals would be run when they signed up but did concede it would be nice for Mareeba to host a finals game. “[Playing finals at Barlow Park] is the set-up. It has been for many, many years. It is the policy of the CDRL and there is nothing we can do about it,” he said. Roosters president Rodney Cummings said “a lot of clubs would support a change” to the finals system. During the regular season the clubs take the profits from home matches. All money taken during the finals is collected by the CDRL.

Wind, heat tests archers Bulls win ARCHERS from across north Queensland got the full gamut of shooting conditions as the Tableland Company of Archers [TCoA] hosted its annual Interclub Tournament. Clubs from Mossman, Townsville and Boolaroo – as well as a couple of archers from New South Wales – attended the shoot held for the first time at TCoA’s new range at Springs Road. On Saturday, archers were faced with tricky conditions. Shooting at longer distances in strong crosswinds, scoring proved difficult. At about 3.45pm, the first day of competition ended with a match play shoot. Archers shot three arrows against an opponent with the highest score progressing to the next round while the lowest score was eliminated. The match play tournament was broken up into two divisions, under 14s and open. Caleb White from Cairns was punished for one loose shot in his two point loss to Manuela Ziegler in the under 14s. White opened with a bullseye, before a gust of wind saw him barely score with his second shot picking up four points from a maximum of 10. With his final arrow, White again fired a
perfect 10 but it wasn’t enough to overhaul the more consistent Ziegler who registered two scores of nine and one score of eight for a total of 26. In the open division the final came down to a shootout between Townsville archers Wayne Moore and Darren Parker. Coby following in sisters footsteps By Ryan Groube A young Mareeba tennis player is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his older sister by securing a scholarship to play in the United States. Coby Maisel (pictured), a 13-year-old who attends St Stephens, did his chances no harm at the Townsville Open on August 9-11. Maisel, seeded four, romped through the four-round, Under 14 boys singles tournament to claim the title without dropping a set. In the final he met number one seed Lachlan Tennant who he blasted off the court 6-1, 6-2. “I felt I played really well over those two days,” he said. “The plan is to do what my sister [Jor-
dan Maisel] did, and get a tennis scholarship to go and play in America.” Maisel trains five days a week, and since his long-term coach Deanna Roberts moved from the far north at the beginning of the year, now has three coaches. At the weekend, Maisel travelled to Ingham for a tournament and also is focused on the upcoming Innisfail Open. Maisel said he had been introduced to tennis at a young age and loved the game. “I really like that feeling that you get when you go to a tournament and you play well and it feels as though all your hard work has payed off,” he said. Maisel’s Australian ranking, not just for Under 14s, sits at 2037 but does not include the points he gained from winning the Townsville Open.
The Mareeba Bulls are Reserve grade premiers after arch-rivals Douglas suffered a shock 1-0 loss at the weekend. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said he was delighted for the Reserves and hoped the Bulls Premiers could secure some silverware of their own in the final round of the season this weekend. The Bulls play at home on Saturday night against FNQ FC Heat. For the Bulls to claim the premiership they will need to not only win but bridge a substantial goal difference margin to overhaul Marlin Coast. At the weekend the Bulls ensured the premiership race would go down to the wire with a tense 2-1 win over Stratford on August 17. Srhoj said despite the win it had been a frustrating afternoon for the Bulls who knew that goals were at a premium in order to bridge the goal difference between themselves and the Rangers. The Bulls had two clear chances in the opening minutes with the Dolphins barely clearing a ball off the line in the opening minute before getting away with a clear handball. A physical Dolphins side worked their way into the game with striker Van Horan isolating young Bulls defender Adrian Madrid before blasting home the opener. A closely fought first half ended with the Dolphins on top 1-0. In the second half the Bulls young midfield of David Cater, Shaun Owens and Ben Fresta clicked into gear and began exposing holes in the Dolphins defence. Srhoj said it was an impressive display from the young trio who were without experienced midfield generals Wayne Srhoj, Josh Ruiz and Dennis Allen for the first time in 2013. Steven Cater got the Bulls back on level terms after some impressive lead up work from his attacking partners Robert Pendenza and Paul Ruiz. Paul Ruiz made the most of a spot kick to hand the Bulls a 2-1 lead. David Cater was also unlucky not to be awarded a penalty after being bought down in an ugly two footed challenge. Srhoj said despite his side being on the wrong end of the 50-50 calls all day he was proud of the side for responding for the win. "We had everything against us this afternoon, nothing went our way, but we managed to find away to win and that is the most important thing" he said. Srhoj said the Bulls still had belief they could claim the premiership. "There are moments in sport where anything can happen, where you want to make the difference, this is way we play the game for.”
