he chief executive of the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) will now need permission to fill vacancies within the organisation. A last-minute amendment to the MSC’s organisational structure will see that “any vacancies that occur not being advertised or filled until considered and approved by Council.” The structure includes 260 full time equivalent potions – 20 of which are externally funded – across three departments that operate under the chief executive. The amendment, moved by Cr Allan Holmes and seconded by Cr Alan Pedersen, prompted a fierce debate at the January 15 meeting. Cr Holmes said councillors had been elected to ensure the organisation was “lean and mean” and to do that they should have a say on whether vacant positions should be filled or made redundant. Acting MSC chief executive Rod Ferguson questioned Cr Holmes’ understanding of how council operates and that the decision would impact “day to day operations”. Mr Ferguson said local governments typically have a staff turnover rate of between eight and 10 per cent. He said it wasn’t practical for positions including administration officers and labourers to be delayed until the bi-monthly council meeting. “It is up to the CEO to handle the administration and I didn’t expect to have to come back to council for what I consider to be day-to-day matters,” he said. “There are only a couple of dozen council meetings each year and at each meeting, in theory, there will be a position to fill that often times is very low down the ladder. These people perform the basic function of local government and we need them there. This just adds another layer of complication to a straight-forward process.” Despite Mr Ferguson’s urgings, Crs Holmes, Pedersen, Mary Graham and Nipper Brown were unmoved, much to the dismay of Mayor Tom Gilmore. “Council must understand the difference between direction and management,” he said. Mayor Gilmore said the issue had to be resolved and that “another motion will be bought before council to clarify the issue” at the next ordinary meeting on February 5. The day after the meeting, Cr Holmes conceded “there might be some problems” with the amendment but that he had “been sending a message”. “The purpose of the motion was to deliver a strong message to the CEO and senior staff that we are serious about trimming the budget,” he said. “I think that message has been sent and as long as it is clear to everybody I am not welded onto it [the amendment].” Deputy Mayor Jenny Jensen said enough “checks and balances” had been included in the original motion.

Stars of the dance floor By Boyd Robertson A retired Ravenshoe couple have been proving that age is no barrier to success on the dance floor after winning a nationallevel competition in Sydney. Eric and Ursula Stettner have been twirling on the ballroom floor socially for ten years but started dancing competitively in June 2013. The couple quickly began notching up victories, winning the Winter Festival event in Sydney in June, the Queensland Dancesport Titles in Brisbane in November and the Australian Dancesport Championships at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne in December. They compete in the Masters 2 Level 1 Standard category of ballroom dancing, which includes the styles of modern waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, Viennese and tango. Ursula, a former skate dancer, said she eventually relented to her ‘very competitive’ husband’s nagging to enter dance competitions after they retired. “I refused at first but eventually I said ‘fine, fine, I will go but only if you will shut up,” she said The pair practice between one and two hours every day, in addition to a two-hour training session with teacher Kevin Morellini, battling the Tablelands heat every time. Ursula said the training was necessary to excel in competitions. “It is a sport, and like with all
sports you must train a lot if you want to do well,” she said. “The only problem is that at 70 you are not as flexible as you used to be.” Eric was enthusiastic about sports like soccer and ski jumping in his younger years, and said he brings his competitive attitude into the world of ballroom dancing. “Dancing keeps you active, not just physically but mentally as well,” he said. “It keeps your brain going because you always have to be thinking where your feet are, what position you are in, what your next move is. “You have nine adjudicators watching you from every angle at all times so if you make one mistake you will pay for it – the margin of error is very low.” The Stettners will head to Townsville in April for their next competition, where they will be dancing in modern waltz, quickstep and foxtrot. They will also have to have tango and Viennese down-pat by the end of the year for further competitions, and have declared that they will keep dancing until their legs give out. “We know friends who have danced into their 80’s,” Eric said. “We’re just going to keep going and going.” Ursula also said there was no end on the horizon yet for the pair. “We will do this as long as we can,” she said. “If you don’t worry about your age, it doesn’t matter.”

$115,000 in community benefit grants for Mareeba FOUR local community organisations in the Mareeba region have shared in more than $115,000 under the latest round of grants through the State Government’s Gambling Community Benefit (GCB) Fund. David Kempton, Member for Cook, welcomed the funding which will help not-for-profit organisations provide programs and services to residents in the Mareeba area.
“The revenue for these one-off grants is sourced from gaming taxes placed on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines,” he said. “I am thrilled to see that recognition flow through to hard working groups here in the far north.” Local groups to share in the funding include the Mareeba Rugby League Club who will receive $28,000 towards a new cold room, Mareeba State High School
will receive $31, 818 to upgrade their outdoor facilities, the Mareeba Child Care and Kindergarten also receive $31, 818 and the Wolfram Fire Brigade are set to score almost $24,000. “The funding for the Wolfram Rural Fire Brigade will be used to purchase a utility vehicle to access land and hilly terrain otherwise inaccessible with fire trucks or other vehicles,” Mr Kempton said. Recycling service discontinued By Ryan Groube
By Ryan Groube A de-amalgamation veteran has been unveiled as the new chief executive of the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC). Peter Franks – the former deamalgamation transfer manager for the Noosa Shire Council – put pen to his contract on January 17. He begins work on February 3. In his first interview after taking the position, Mr Franks said his key focus in the role will be ensuring efficient and value for money services to the community. “Within the organisation my focus will be on service delivery,” he said. “Council’s role is to deliver services to the community with community money. I think the community realises that there are going to be challenges but we need to meet those challenges. “Things are going to be tight, we know that, so we need to look at the organisation internally to see where savings can be found.” Originally from Zimbabwe, Mr Franks moved to Australia in 2000 where he worked developing financial models for the de-amalgamation of the Delatite Shire Council.
From 2003 until 2008 he was the chief executive of the Livingstone Shire Council – which has since been reborn after de-amalgamating from the Rockhampton Regional Council. In 2008, Mr Franks became the inaugural chief executive of the amalgamated Mackay Regional Council. After a brief stint as a locum with the McKinlay Shire Council, Mr Franks was appointed to oversee the de-amalgamation of Noosa from the Sunshine Coast Regional council. Mr Franks had applied to stay on as Noosa Shire Council chief executive but was beaten out by former Noosa Corporate Services Director Brett De Chastel for the position. Mr Franks said he was delighted to secure the job at Mareeba and that he was looking forward to the challenge of rebuilding the Mareeba Shire. “I was attracted to the job in Mareeba because it was very similar in terms of rebuilding,” he said. “In doing that I will be really open and honest with the staff and with the community as well.” Mayor Tom Gilmore said the signing of Mr Franks as a full time chief executive was pivotal in the process of re-establishing the Mareeba Shire.

these decisions and I was surprised that the chamber was liaised with.” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said he had no objection to council offering recycling services but that it had been put on the “back burner” in the short-term. “As Mayor of this organisation and this community I am very aware of people’s capacity to pay,” he said. “I will not accept the introduction of these things at the moment if it is going to provide an extra burden to households. If someone comes and shows me a business case that is cost neutral I would be more than happy for council to consider it.” The Tablelands Regional Council has a Material Waste Recovery Facility in Atherton that is used to recycle glass, cardboard and plastics from general waste.

A cardboard recycling service for businesses has been discontinued as the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) looks to find savings to its bottom line. On January 15, the MSC voted to cease its cardboard pick-up operation service which had been offered free of charge to 45 local businesses. The move will see council trim $146,928 a year from its bottom line but affected businesses will now have to employ private contractors to remove the waste. The option of continuing the service with a fee was rejected by council with businesses facing a monthly cost of about $300. Council has given notice to businesses who will have one month to make alternative arrangements. A straw poll of affected businesses conducted by The Express showed the impact of the decision to be minimal. While businesses conceded sourcing a private contractor would see them take a financial hit they were understanding that the
new council needed to find savings. Curcio’s Bakery owner Anna Curcio said while the cardboard pick-up service had been convenient and that there would be added costs she was happy enough with the decision. “I understand that council is looking to cut costs where they can,” she said. “One way or another we would be affected whether it is through our rates or here [at the business].” Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said although this would have an impact most of the business community were willing to give the new council “a bit of grace”. “It was there first meeting and I am sure they are going to have more important and tough decisions to make,” he said. “I am sure the business community will take these changes on board and make them work but council needs to be up front with

Looking for this year’s Debutantes By Ryan Groube The organisers of Mareeba’s Debutante Ball have put the call out for girls aged 16 to 17 to take part in the annual rite-of-passage. Last year, 19 girls made their debut at a glittering formal event at the Mareeba International Club and Debutante co-ordinator Daniela Soncin is hoping for a similar turnout in 2014. In order to take part, interested girls and their parents or guardians must attend a mandatory Parent Information Session
at St Thomas of Villanova school on February 2 at 2pm. A key part of the session will be taking the girls through an intensive lead-up schedule which features 11 workshops held on Sunday from 5pm until 7pm from February 9. The workshops are free and teach the girls 12 dances as well as etiquette and hair and make-up in preparation for the May 3 event. “We need to know who is interested by no later than February 2,” Mrs Soncin said.
“The Debutante Ball is a unique and traditional experience and one of the only true, formal balls you have in Mareeba.” Kirsten Falvo made her debut at the last year’s event and said it had been a once in a lifetime experience. She said the weekly Sunday workshops had also been a lot of fun. “I really enjoyed the whole experience,” she said. “Every Sunday you’d go and spend three hours with your friends. It takes about two or
three weeks to get used to learning the dances but after that it is so much fun.” Ms Falvo said the formal part of the Debutante Ball offered young girls a different experience to other social events. The Debutante Ball has been a fixture on Mareeba’s social calendar since before World War II. Any girls wanting more information can get more information from their school, or, by emailing Mrs Soncin at adsoncin@bigpond. com

Fire levy wound back By Ryan Groube A new State Government rural fire levy which threatened to cripple some rural businesses has been wound back. At its January 16 meeting, the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) received a letter from the Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services detailing how the new Emergency Management, Fire and Rescue Levy had been changed to cap fees aimed at businesses in regional Queensland. Previously, rural businesses classified as Class E faced an annual fee of up to $37,534 each year. A spokesperson for the Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services said that fee would now be capped to a maximum of $657.80 from January 1, 2014 to June 30, 2014.
“Under the original proposal many small businesses in rural and regional areas would have been placed under significant pressure with the introduction of the levy,” the spokesperson said. “That is why the state government has capped the maximum amount for Class E levy contributors to $657.80. “The government will work with local councils that have already collected the Class E levy to arrange refunds for any property owners impacted by this change.” The TRC, rural fire brigades and rural businesses had been staunch objectors to the levy with a series of protests held across the Tableland and in Cairns last year. Money collected from the rural fire levy will go towards funding disaster recovery.

“Justice and right come a very poor second to politics in a Rosa Lee Long-led council,” – Councillor Shaaron Linwood
CLEALL’S
Councillor Shaaron Linwood (left) has slammed TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long (centre) for using her casting vote to choose Cr Geoff Stocker (second from the right) as deputy mayor.
Upset in the TRC By Boyd Robertson Cracks have appeared in the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC), after veteran councillor Shaaron Linwood was controversially defeated for the position of deputy mayor by Geoff Stocker. Mayor Rosa Lee Long used her casting vote as Mayor to break a 3-3 deadlock and choose Cr Stocker as her deputy over Cr Linwood at the TRC’s first post-deamalgamation meeting in Atherton on January 16. Cr Lee Long voted once for Cr Stocker before voting a second time – which she is empowered to do as Mayor under the Local Government Act in order to break ties – to ensure he got over the line four votes to three. Although pledging to support Cr Stocker in the role of deputy mayor, Cr Linwood made incendiary comments about Cr Lee Long’s decision. “This confirms that justice and right come a very poor second to politics in a Rosa Lee Long-led council,” Cr Linwood told The Express shortly after the decision. “I knew beforehand that this would happen - it’s all about politics with her.” Cr Lee Long said it had been a “very difficult decision” to choose Cr Stocker over Cr Linwood. “I chose Geoff because he has the respect of both the community and the other councillors,” she said. “Shaaron also has that respect so it was

More beds for the aged at Carinya By Boyd Robertson Ground has been broken on a $15 million expansion to the Carinya Home for the Aged in Atherton will mean more beds available for the Tableland’s elderly. Carinya Board of Directors president Max Slade, life member Kevin Wadley and patron Jim Chapman turned the first sod together in a small ceremony held at the facility. The new lodge will be named posthumously after Carinya’s long-time treasurer Enid Collins and will feature 45 new rooms for residents, bringing the facility’s capacity to 132. Mr Slade said the expansion would also include important upgrade to the centre’s other facilities, including the kitchen, dining halls and lounge rooms. “This has been a very long process [of planning the expansion] but it will definitely pay
off in the long run,” Mr Slade said. “There is a definite need for additional aged care beds on the Tableland, which is the whole reason for this expansion.” Carinya CEO Sue Nicholls said aged care facilities formed important parts of any community. “Without aged care, the elderly stay in hospital, and hospitals are not designed for aged care needs,” she said. “What ends up happening is they are left with no option but to settle the elderly into aged care anyway, and this can be far from their friends and families. “Home care is an option and we do have that in Atherton but aged care facilities provide that next step, particularly when it comes to security and companionship.” Politicians Jan McLucas, Bob Katter and Shane Knuth also attended the groundbreaking, with Senator McLucas credited with help-
ing secure a low-interest $3.6 million loan from the federal government to assist with construction. The Senator downplayed her role in the expansion; however, instead saying the centre’s committee and staff deserved praise. “Carinya put together an extremely thorough and well-presented application to the Government – these funds are extremely competitive and the fact they’ve been approved for one shows how well-respected they are and how long their vision goes,” she said. “The value of Carinya to the Tableland community is immense. “To have a high-quality aged care facility here like Carinya should be celebrated, it should be something locals are thankful for.” The Enid Collins Lodge is expected to take 18 months to build, with work scheduled to begin in February, weather permitting.

Trevor Adil leaves MSC By Ryan Groube
AUSTRALIA DAY C E L E B R AT E Y O U R WAY Australia Day means something different to everyone, and it’s important you do what’s right for you. So on January 26, reflect on what you love about being Australian.
The Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) has parted ways with one of the organisation’s highest ranking managers citing “a new focus” as the reason for the split. Trevor Adil has ended his role as Director of Infrastructure Services where he has been replaced by National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements Program Manager Brian Symth. The department is responsible, primarily, for delivering council’s capital works program. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said the change was the result of a “change of focus” within the organisation. “Mr Adil has provided exemplary service to both Mareeba Shire and Tablelands Regional Council for a number of years, raising the engineering standard within the organisation to a very high standard,” he said. “But due to a new focus within the organisation it was agreed that it was time for a change within that department.” The Express contacted Mr Adil for comment but he declined. Mr Symth has been appointed on a short-term contract. Mayor Gilmore thanked Mr Adil for his contribution to council.

Nettie Dunne: Just got home to Kuranda via the Rex… I was in the first lot of cars on the lower side of the crash. Didn’t see any pineapples; however by 9pm we asked the road tech guys in Smithfield about the hold up and apparently there was no crane available to lift the truck. That’s when I took the Rex. Jason Milo Raso: Do some people think it takes five minutes to put the truck upright? It's a mammoth job, and it will take time. We are not talking about a small car. Gayle Hannah: Just got an SMS from Main Roads (7.30pm) - it is expected to be another 3-4 hours! Oh it is just beyond acceptable.

Kuranda Range closed for 7 hours By Boyd Robertson The Kuranda Range Road was closed for nearly seven hours on Wednesday night after a semi-trailer rolled just above the Henry Ross lookout at about 5:15pm. Kuranda police have confirmed that the driver of the truck, which was carrying a load of pineapples, suffered minor injuries but noone else was hurt. Police investigations are ongoing into the cause of the crash, which was sufficient in force to nearly flatten several sections of safety railing along the side of the road. Police closed the road until 12:30am the following morning, with the line of backed-up traffic reaching to at least the Kuranda turn-
off at about 9pm. Many motorists decided to turn back and use the Gillies or Rex Range Roads to get to Cairns. More than a few dropped in at the Kuranda Hotel for rest and refreshment, with owner Rob Matthews happy to capitalise on the range’s frequent closures. “It was actually a fantastic night for us,” Mr Matthews said. “We had a very significant increase on our usual night-time activities. “We usually do see a pretty noticeable spike whenever the road is closed, particularly when there are longer closures for six or more hours.” Even with the truck removed, road users will still be facing delays with Transport and Main Roads (TMR) earthworks halfway down
the range scheduled to continue until August. Crews began constructing a large temporary earth-fill platform in early January, which will allow a long-reach excavator to access higher areas of the slope face. TMR has stated it will try to reduce delays as much as possible. “We are aware of the importance of the Kuranda Range Road as a link between Cairns and the Northern Tablelands,” a TMR spokesperson said. “We are trying to reduce disruption to motorists by reducing lane closures during the day to just one site. “Lane closures at two additional sites on the range will only be implemented at night.” The works will continue 24 hours a day until completion.

tions manager Stephen Scurr said he expected that there was no way any of the fruit could be salvaged. “I am pretty sure we will have to dump it all because the fruit will be too bruised to do much with,” he said. “It is not nice for anyone [when this happens] but we are hoping to find out some time today [January 16] from the Transport Department about what happened. “We are hoping the truck insurance will cover anything we have lost.” Mr Scurr said the business had gone eight years without having a truck carrying their fruit roll-over but had now had two in six weeks. In December 2013, a truck carrying Pinata produce also rolled north of Mackay.

Bat response not good enough Wow, the Mayors response [No eviction notice for bats, January 15, page four] has caused a few locals to voice their opinions, and the horse riding community are not happy at all. I took the following photos this morning on my walk through town and advise that these two dead bats are across the street from the Herberton council offices.
“No direct impact on the community”, well what about the dogs that are getting out at night and rolling in these bats and eating them?

In response to Ms McLean from the Tolga Bat Hospital, Tolga is 22 kilometres from Herberton it is no wonder that she cannot smell the bats or hear their high pitched squealing. To the Mayor, I ask just who is going to remove these dead bats from the gutter in the main street of Herberton? Are you going to issue the HAZCHEM suites to the TRC employees and pay them extra money to remove possible bio hazard materials? Oh and are scared that these “harmless bats” will soon roost in your back yard if moved on Madam Mayor? Have you actually been to Herberton and walked the area where these bats are? Or, are you just taking the word of your so called bat experts? I invite you to come visit me and bring your walking shoes and I will take you for a guided tour Madam Mayor, so you can see first hand the exact extent of what I am complaining about.
Hundreds of thousands? Are you serious? They number in the millions now. Neville Johnson Herberton New range crossing a necessity About 25 per cent of our region’s population must travel a range road to get to our regional airport, seaport and major medical facilities. Each of the range roads is easily cut by weather and crashes; so frequently that experienced range users fully expect delays and closures. But is this good enough in a first-world country in the 21st century? Would it be tolerable in the south-east of the state? Cairns is hemmed in: ocean to the east, hills to the west and rivers to the north and south. In major floods the only way out of Cairns is by air or sea because there is no road out that doesn’t first cross a river. What if Cairns had to be evacu-

FREEBIRDS
After years of fruitless warning of his farmyard brethren of the coming Thanksgiving doom, Reggie the Turkey finds himself spared as the annual Pardoned Turkey. However, Reggie's easy life is disrupted by Jake, a fanatic turkey who drags him along with the insane idea of going back in time to make sure turkeys are not part of the first Thanksgiving. Through foolhardiness and luck, the pair manage to take an experimental time machine to do just that. Now in 1621 at the Plymouth colony, Reggie and Jake find themselves in the middle of a turkey clan's struggle for survival. In doing so, their preconceptions of the world and themselves are challenged forever in a conflict from which the world will never be the same.
SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY
The day-dreaming Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) escapes his dull, anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job is at risk, he takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have imagined.

ated for a massive cyclonic storm surge and the range roads and river crossings were already cut? The tsunami risk is also quite real: the tectonic subduction zone off the north-west USA is 100 years overdue for a big earthquake, Cairns sits squarely in the path of a trans-Pacific tsunami originating there and Trinity Inlet would act as a funnel. The improvements made to our range roads and river crossings in recent decades have not altered the stark fact that the bulk of Cairns residents are sitting ducks in such events. Without a road going straight to high ground, 75 per cent of our regional population might be unable to escape disaster. The time has come to seriously examine the possibilities for a completely new range crossing; if it went straight to high ground without crossing any rivers then that would be a huge bonus for Cairns people. Hi folks, Well I hope that you all had a safe time over the Christmas and New year period. With the new year comes the resolutions, and mine is to ride more than I did last year and I hope yours is the same too. The roads have been busy with bikes between the rain and it’s good to see the occasional pack of bikes together making a statement to Newman. Here’s something interesting, Motorcycle registrations have increased over the last five years by 31 percent and is continuing to rise due to increasing fuel prices, and it’s not just men getting on a motorcycle, licensing rates for women aged over 41 have risen by 17 percent, go for it Ladies, it’s great to see. On the racing scene, it looks like another busy season on and off road. The Mareeba Motocross have just had their sign on practice day and now have a new committee steering the club, which was voted the third best club in Queensland for 2013, which is a credit to the hard working previous committee and members. While I’m on the subject of the Mareeba club, they really need more support on the working bees prior to the race meet and some more officials would be good too. The Sid Carucci Memorial two-day meet coming up on January 26 and 27, they could certainly use the extra hands. Another local Motocross rider who is going places is Caleb Ward. This young man is a champion in the making and will be a fierce competitor in this season’s Monster Energy Motocross series, as well as competing locally as he has just been upgraded to Pro. At just 16 years of age, Caleb has been busy in the off season training in the gym, mountain biking as well as dedicated endless hours punching out lap after lap on his KTM 250 at local
tracks. Shortly he is heading down to spend time with Greg Moss at MTIF and Greg knows how to build Champions, just look at his sons Matt and Jake. They created history by being the first brothers to go 1-2 and take out the 2013 Australian Supercross Championship. This is what you do to succeed in this sport, eat, live, breathe Motorcycles. Caleb’s hard work and determination has attracted a host of sponsors with the likes of KTM Australia, Axis Motorsport, Spent clothing, Fly Racing, M2R Helmets and Wayne Leonard Motorcycles and this list will continue to grow. If you want to check out some of his training, check out his latest clip on youtube – Caleb Ward MX Welcome to 2014, and I am sure we would all like to see him have an awesome season. Some other news on road racing is that as I write this, Stephen “Acco” Accatino, Jason Allen and Andrew Relph are driving the mega miles down to Phillip Island in Victoria, to once again race in the Phillip Island International Classic. This is a huge international event and there are a lot of overseas riders competing in various classes over two days on what is considered to be one of the best circuits in the world. All three are racing the same class as last year which is the period 6 250cc and I have to give these guys credit for driving from one end of Australia to the other to fly the flag for the Far North Queensland Road Racing Club which is based out at the Mako Trak. It will be interesting to see the lap times of these guys as not only will they be racing a talented field of riders, they will be racing each other for the bragging rights of who beat who.

State championship bound
By Silvano Ruggeri Mareeba Basketball Association president Mareeba Basketball has had four boys selected to play in the U18s Queensland State Championships where they will play in a combined team with the Mulgrave Basketball Academy. Before the State Championships, the boys played
in the QNJBC which pitted them against teams from Townsville, Cairns and Mackay. This competition is the lead up to the State Championships where the teams are graded into divisions for the State Championships depending on the number of wins and losses. The team has been seeded in Division Two for the State Championships which runs from January 22 to 26.
Roosters off to Herberton By Ryan Groube A historic pre-season game will be held in Irvinebank next month, with the Atherton Roosters sending a team to the town for the first time. The Under 18s whose major sponsors are the Irvinebank Tavern, will play a pre-season game against Cairns Ivanhoes on February 15 at Henry Dalziel Oval with kickoff at 4pm. Roosters president Rodney Cumming said the idea for the game came over a couple of beverages at the Irvinebank Tavern late last year. “We were sitting around and someone men-
tioned how good it would be to have a game of football out here,” he said. “The flyer for the game has only been out for a few days and already there is a lot of talk around town. “I think we’ll get a good crowd out there and I’d encouraged everyone to get out there and support the game.” The Roosters have organised a bus to the game. Tickets are available at Arabella Jewellers in Atherton’s Main Street for $10 and must be secured prior to the game. Entry to the game itself is by gold coin donation with all proceeds going to the Irvinebank school.

Milestone for stock horse society By Boyd Robertson
The Cape York and Tablelands branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society (ASHS) will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding in Mareeba in May. The milestone will be marked with a weekend of equine challenges at Kerribee Park at the beginning of May. The main event, campdrafting, revolves around a rider ‘cutting’ or separating one or more cows from a stationary herd or ‘camp’ and requires great skill and control over a mount. The Cape York and Tablelands branch was founded in 1974, with its first meeting being held at King and Lorraine Ellis’s property outside Mareeba and featuring campdrafting, hacking, showjumping, dressage, polo cross and endurance events. Two of the founding members of the branch were Henry and Colleen Taylor, who now live near Dimbulah. Together they shared their combined 80 years of memories of the branch’s history with The Express, including Colleen’s efforts putting together a book chronicling the history of the branch, which she hopes to launch at the anniversary celebrations in May. “Some things have changed greatly in terms of stock horse riding and the branch, other things haven’t changed that much at all,” Colleen said. “When we first started in 1974 we had about ten members, and now we have about 25 active members with many others attending occasionally. “In the beginning there were no ladies events, which changed pretty quickly – I actually won the first ladies event we had in 1976 – and now there are women who are coming in very close to winning the major events in Tamworth and elsewhere.” Henry also said he had seen changes to the sport of campdraft and stock horse riding in general. “One of the things I’ve noticed is really the growth of interest in campdraft – it’s the fastest-

growing horse sport in Australia, back in the day you’d have a few guys turn up for an event with a couple hundred cattle, now some events can have waiting lists of more than 200 people with thousands of cattle involved,” he said. The establishment of the Cape York and Tableland branch, one of the first in northern
Queensland, was part of the ASHS’s nationwide search for the Australian Stock Horse – a unique breed that would represent the essential qualities of Australian working horses that would represent the country overseas. The Australian Stock Horse, which is now a popular breed exported to the United States and
elsewhere, is extremely versatile, equally suited to mustering, racing or show work. Henry and Colleen said they are proud to have kept their love of horses in the family, with their children and grandchildren all being avid riders and slotted to take part in the anniversary celebrations in May.
Plowman signs as Bulls announce ins for season 2014 By Boyd Robertson
Tableland Athletics members Charles Rosas, Jennifer Moss and Tim Ford all returned from national- level school athletics finals in December last year with high placings
Top tier success for athletes By Boyd Robertson Three young Tableland Athletics Centre members have distinguished themselves at the Australian National All-Schools Athletics Championships (ANASAC) in Townsville in early December 2013. Jennifer Moss, 15, Charles Rosas, 17 and Tim Ford, 16 all qualified for the ANASAC finals after winning a swag of medals at state-level championships in October and faced off some of the most capable young athletes in the country at Townsville. Ford was a particular standout, achieving a bronze medal in the Under 16s shot put and clinching a personal best with a throw of 16.82 metres. Rosas just missed out on a medal in the Under 18s
triple jump, landing in fifth place on 13.52 metres. Moss placed sixth in the hammer toss with a throw of 44.22 metres. Tableland Athletics Centre spokesperson Andrew Ford hailed the three’s achievements, saying “their performances and efforts should be recognised and praised.” “To perform at the highest level is a credit to them, their families, supporters and coaches - they have had to maintain a high-level training regime, overall fitness, enthusiasm and a strong will sicne June when the first leg of qualifying began with school-level championships. “It is a long journey from Tableland Athletics to national-level athletics and all three have performed with distinction.”

The return of veteran Alex Plowman to the Mareeba Bulls is set to bolster the club’s ranks for the 2014 season. Plowman, a former captain of the FNQ Heat, leads a host of players back to the Bulls including Robert Hodsgen, Justin Barnwell, Ben Stabile, Nicholas Tallerio, Luke Trabucco, Pier Portella and Steven Acha. The reinforcements will be sorely needed for this year’s season with the departure of vital midfielder Dennis Allen due to work commitments. Other losses to the team included John Gonalves and British import Elliot Gardner, who will be playing for the Heat. Despite the Bulls now looking good on paper with a filled-out roster, returning coach Alex Srhoj warned hard work will still be essential to achieving results on-field. “Last year was fantastic, the club made some massive steps forward and hopefully laid a platform for this year,” Srhoj said. “But last year’s results mean noth-
ing – we still have to work hard, we still have to prepare like we always do. “The key is to make sure we are in an environment where we have every possible opportunity to be there come the business end of the season.” To this end, Srhoj has implemented a new coaching program based on placing players in game-like scenarios and making decisions under pressure. “When you learn the piano, you don’t do laps around the room - instead you play the keys,” Srhoj said. “It’s the same with football – of course, fitness plays a part but we need to know how to kick a ball first. “The players of 2014 are representing over 60 years of history – it is our responsibility to make sure we do the club proud.” Srhoj is joined in his coaching role by John Sagaloni from Emerald, while Marcello Savaglio returns to coach the Bulls Reserves side. Srhoj added that the Bulls are training Tuesday and Thursday night from 7pm at Borzi Park, with old and new players invited to attend.

Miracle shot By Ryan Groube
A near-impossible challenge set by a group of mates hanging out after work has been captured on video. Jamie Carroll, 23, (pictured right) was set the task of kicking a soccer ball from the park across the road into the 3-metre high basketball hoop. The distance from the park - adjacent to the BP petrol station - was measured at 37 metres. Bevan Carroll, Marc Iuretigh and cousins Brendan and Charles Nastasi watched on as Jamie’s first shot fell just short of the hoop. Encouraged by how close the attempt was Marc decided to film the next attempt with his iPhone. The second attempt didn’t come within cooee but undettered Jamie reset and lined up for a third shot. A clean barefoot strike saw the ball go well right before curling and dropping through the hoop. In celebration, Jamie launches into a glorious bout of laughter (almost as impressive as the kick) before, wisely, deciding against a planned celebration of running along Byrnes Street in his birthday suit. “I knew I had sunk it the minute it left the
boot,” he said. “We had been shooting some hoops before and the boys said it was time to bring out the soccer ball and Marc dared me to do it. “Everyone was pretty stoked [when it went in] it was a one in a million chance.” Although some luck was involved, Jamie is one of the far north’s most gifted soccer players. In 2012, he was the now defunct Queensland State League’s top goal scorer with the FNQ Bulls. He has just returned to Mareeba following a four-month stint in the United Kingdom’s Ryman Premier League and was identified as one of the best players outside the A-League FourFourTwo magazine. This year he will line up in the attacking third with the Peter Tokesi coached FNQ FC Heat in the National Premier League competition. To watch the video, visit The Express newspapers Facebook page or type ‘Jamie Carroll soccer’ into YouTube. Jamie said he had received some feedback that the shot wasn’t that difficult and said if people wanted to give it a try they were welcome. The YouTube video was seen by more than 400 people by deadline, less than 24 hours after it had been uploaded.
Six-a-side champions crowned
MENS B-grade winners Bandits
MENS C-grade winners Flaming Turtles
LADIES A-grade winners Snatch
LADIES B-grade winners Travel Bugs
MENS A-grade winners Road Runners
By Carl Portella The Mareeba United Football Club’s 2013 Summer six-a-side competition finished up on January 17 with finals in all five grades. After one of the biggest competitions on record, with more 200 players and 24 teams participating, the finals did not disappoint with close tussels in most divisions. Snatch completed a second half come back to win the ladies A-Grade final with Bulls striker Samantha Cater and defender Stephanie Vedelago playing strong roles in turning the tide over the Common Reds being down 2-1 at half time, winning the match 5-3. In the ladies B-grade Travel Bugs completed a strong season overcoming the Cougars 5-1. In the mens competition, the Road Runners showed fight and football smarts to overcome Friggers in the mens A-Grade 5-2. Before the match the Road Runners only had five players on the team sheet with players away, but called upon Alex Srhoj to make the six despite returning from

knee surgery. Despite having no subs for the second time in three nights (they also fielded six in the semi-finals) the Road Runners got the best of an frustrated Friggers outfit the fielded reserve grade finals winners Bradley Owens and Pommie duo Elliot Gardner and Dominic Patterson alongside premier division players Bren Fresta and Robert Pendenza. Anthony Mete was the star for the roadrunner in front of goal pulling of a series of remarkable goals to keep the Road Runners in front. Anthony Henderson and John Goncalves also played starring roles. In the mens B-Grade final, it was a youthful and fast encounter, but the Bandits proved too strong with Bozzo brothers Karl and Andrew playing strong roles along with Damian Lamonaca running out 8-3 winners. The mens C-Grade was also tight affair with Flaming Turtles coming out 4-3 winners. The match looked destined for extra time with scores locked 3-3 with only minutes remaining, but the Flaming Turtles found a way through with a minute left to play.
