MSC cleans up on waste water treatment plant By Carl Portella

T

he township of Kuranda hosted the first ever meeting of the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) on Wednesday, October 15. Item 16 on the agenda, was the much anticipated decision on the Mareeba Waste Water Treatment Plant, which was one of the main topics in the de-amalgamation debate last year. Initial figures indicated that a new waste water treatment plant for Mareeba would cost Mareeba rate payers in the vicinity of $34 million, later reduced to $27 million. At the meeting, MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore

outlined the time frame for upgrading the existing waste water treatment plant that would service the community’s needs until 2035, along with the potential capacity to be further expanded later to cater for further growth. The indicative cost of the upgrade is in the vicinity of $15 million, however this will be more accurately predicted once the process design work is completed. Tenders for this design have been called and council will be awarding the tender very shortly. With the increase in sewerage charges by $150 in the January budget, council will have an estimated $8 million in funds to put towards the

upgrade by the time the project gets under way. The balance of the required funds will hopefully be covered by government funding, or in the worst case a loan. Council is developing this alternative way forward to achieve its objective in improving the waste water treatment process and environmental performance. By doing so, it will achieve and exceed the conditions of the current Environmental Authority, while at the same time limiting the impact on the ratepayers. The refurbishment will also provide opportunities for council to add process technology to improve effluent quality in the future.

“We had a very close look at what the alternatives were, a new plant was out of the question without major subsidy from State Government,” Mayor Gilmore said. “But having discovered that we are able to refurbish and meet and exceed the Environmental Authority’s licence conditions, when our staff cleverly came to council and said look at this, this is what we think we can do and we ascertained that yes, we can do it.” It is anticipated that the tender process and construction will start in August 2015 and begin verification testing in January 2017.

Helping others to be McHappy By Justin Fris MAREEBA locals are renowned for giving a ‘lending a hand’ for those out in the community. On Saturday, they took it to a whole new level. By purchasing a “Helping Hand” novelty toy for a $1, extra proceeds were raised to help seriously ill children across the nation. McDonalds Mareeba was one of 920 restaurants nationally that provided various activities for families, along with maintaining their fundraising and general employment commitments. In its 24th year, “McHappy Day” plays a significant role in raising funds for children battling serious illness. From every Big Mac sold, $2 was donated toward Ronald Mcdonald House Charity programs, or customers could donate spare change to fundraising buckets dotted around the store. Prior to Saturday, an overall fundraising target of $3 million was set. This figure equates to 23,000 nights of accommodation for families with ill children in a Ronald Mcdonald House facility. Staff were cheerful and dressed up especially for the occasion. The generous nature of people in the Tablelands again was a testament to what a special community we live in.

MAREEBA Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore has urged families to remain resilient, ahead of the upcoming wet season. Speaking at the launch for ‘Get Ready Set Qld’ week at the Mareeba Library on Friday, Mayor Gilmore urged local residents to be prepared for any climatic situation that could face the region. “The 1st of November is the beginning of cyclone and high fire seasons,” he said. “Every member of the family needs to be aware of how their emergency plan works, so that if action is required, everyone knows what to do.” Mayor Gilmore, stressed the importance of having non-negotiable items in a family emergency kit. “Non perishable food items, a torch and sufficient medication supplies (if you require) should always be included,” he said. “Having a radio is also invaluable; as if the power is out, you can receive up to date information from sources like ABC radio.” Families can make an early start to prepare themselves for the looming wet season, by clearing their yard and securing any loose item that could cause harm in an emergency. Above all, if families can put sufficient planning into practice, they will ultimately be better off

Furious over dump charges By Carl Portella Farmers from across the Mareeba Shire will be slugged with a new waste charge for the disposal of fertilizer bags, T-Tape and plastic mulch. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) President Joe Moro said he was disappointed that one of his members found out about the new charge when he used the council facility. “Council has not advised farmers of any new waste levies. The MDFVGA made a presentation to council after the new council was elected with a request to continue with free access. “We will seek clarification from council as members have stated that only one ute load per day was allowed and not unlimited trips.” Mr Moro went on to say, “Farmers are price takers, not price setters and all costs impact on the bottom line. As businesses we are trying to be as efficient as possible, but this is counter-productive. Farmers pay a lot in rates and waste charges even on blocks of land that produce no waste,”. “This levy will impact on every agricultural and horticultural industry on the Tablelands.” Local farmer Makse Srhoj, was dumfounded by the about-turn the Council has made regarding farm waste. “Why is it that I can make multiple trips

to the dump over a week and dump for free, but if I put it all in one truck they charge me for it. It’s not economical, there is more down time, fuel and labour costs and it will cost the average farmer a further $3,000-$4,000 per year. Fees we never had to pay before.” Bronwyn Dwyer, manager of Tableland Canegrowers said, “Farmers continue to tackle this issue with council every year,” she said. “It should not matter if it’s a ute load or truck load, it should be free. Farmers pay council rates and waste charges and I fear that charging for disposal will lead to an increase in illegal dumping, which will be an impost on council or burning which is an environmental hazard.” When posed with the question Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said, “We know that this is predominantly a farming community,” he said. “We didn’t in the past have plastic mulch and half ton fertilizer bags,so the council said we will go with what we have in place for other businesses and that is, if you come in with a ute or trailer load that’s free, but if you bring in a 10 ton truck you will have to pay as a commercial client. And that is what council will continue to do.” The costs of running a landfill also have to be met, so farmers will continue to pay $65 per ton. Farmers are preparing to approach council to see if the decision can be overturned for the sake of common sense.

Farmers like Makse Srhoj, are currently disenchanted with the new waste charge.

Lowie’s sound contribution to Rocky Creek memorial By Justin Fris DONALD Lowie was recognised for his contribution to the Rocky Creek War Memorial on Thursday during the Tablelands Rural Council meeting in Atherton. After stoically playing the bagpipes for decades, Mr Lowie has finally called time on his unsurpassed effort in the local community. Pictured with TRC Cr Marjorie Pagani, Mr Lowie re-

ceived official acknowledgement through both mementos and unrivalled admiration throughout the room. Rocky Creek War Memorial colleague John Hardy said Mr Lowie’s ability to blend emotion with natural talent would see him always remembered by the community. “Donald has always been reliable,” he said. “He generally played ‘The Lament’, an emotive tune which he always managed to play with feeling.”

Snapshot of a lifetime By Justin Fris EVERY day in life, we are faced with several journeys. Irrespective of distance, the choices we make from within result in future actions. This rule also applies to past and future generations. Mareeba’s Junior Theatre group presented their unique tale dubbed The beginning and end of the world as told by the children to an upbeat audience on Friday night at the Mareeba Theatre Hall. All ideas, characters and costumes were thought of by children in the cast, which add to the appeal of this local production. Directors Adam Libke and Annalisa Savaglio clearly built up a solid rapport with the cast, who appeared to cherish the opportunity to shine and it showed. “We began with the cast in the middle of term 3,” Mr Libke said. “Annalisa and I developed a real trust with the children and they really seemed to enjoy themselves.” Like a car on a chilly morning in July, it was a steady build up through the gears. The plot was designed to encapsulate Earth’s entire existence from beginning to impending doom- which superlative comic relief in between. Centred around space travelling escapades of Rainbow Unicorn (Mackenzie Stankovic), Dr Frankenstein (ToniaMarie Rantucci) and Bob the Alien (Lacey Gibb), a solid mix of subtle pop culture references and one liners had the audience in stitches. Personally, the central music montage symbolised the entire show. It not only educated some of the younger

Cast members of the production “The beginning and end of the world as told by the children” pictured after their performance. members of the audience, but it also rekindled the more experienced and anchored previous memories. Both directors said after the show they were satis-

fied with the performance, although the sheer pace of show did surprise them! Quality dramatic productions (like a fine matur-

ing wine) take time. And like a crisp glass of De Bortoli with a piece of grilled Dhufish, this performance delivered on several levels.

Dogs assisting our community By Justin Fris FOR the local team at the Association of Australian Assistance Dogs (NQ), assisting those in the community is a habit, not a dream. For people who are blind or visually impaired, everyday actions taken for granted by many are not a formality. In order for all components of the business to flow evenly, participation from the local community is imperative. AAADNQ Committee member Claire Marson said the organisation held three core pillars which ensured strength in the community. “We obviously are interested in having a healthy demand of assistant recipients, puppy carers and boarders,” Mrs Marson said. “Although some criteria are essential to qualify for these positions, we are encouraging the whole community to learn more about what we do.” Before an assistant dog can be assigned to a recipient, they must be trained for two years, by a dedicated ‘puppy carer’. The importance of ‘puppy boarder’ volunteers is also vital, as they provide respite for the carers when they take holidays. Mrs Marson’s sentiments were echoed by colleague Greg Halliwell, who said the AAADNQ was keen to increase its local presence in the tablelands in the coming months. “We had a few successful days at various venues and are looking to make appearances at some local schools and shopping centres,” Mr Halliwell said. “Volunteers are the backbone of our organisation and we are especially interested in anyone who could spare a few hours, particularly with administration or typing skills.” If you have a passion for helping others in your community or would like to know more about the AAADNQ, please contact Greg Halliwell on 0447 096 700.

Slice of gourmet goodness hits Tablelands By Justin Fris

LOCAL produce lovers from across Queensland jammed into Atherton on Sunday, where the Tastes of the Tablelands festival was a spectacular success. Regardless of your preference, this festival had something for everyone. Operated by the Atherton Rotary Club (ARC), Event CoCoordinator Jo Barnes said she was confident prior to the event that attendance would surpass 8,000 people. From a quick scan throughout the grounds, that number looked like it was comfortably reached and more. “We advertised quite heavily prior to Sunday in not just the Tablelands, but Cairns and across the state,” she said. “This event is a great way of bringing everyone from the state together.” Everywhere you looked, lanes were flooded with eager families and people desperate to find quality local produce or items that they could take home with them. KAP leader Bob Katter and Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth caused some mirth for festival goers, as they did their bit for fundraising for the ARC. Locked in a cage and told they wouldn’t be released until fundraising buckets were filled, Mr Katter started singing, which was one of the more humorous moments of the event. The delights of a fashion parade and live music were definitely a hit with the ladies, while many blokes congregated out front of the German sausage stand. But in spite of all the frivolity and fun that comes with a day out, there were two serious components of the festival. Students from local high schools (Atherton, Mareeba and Malanda) competed in a series of cook offs, which captivated both the general public and chefs that decided their fate. But the work that organisations like the ARC play in raising extra funds for community-based projects, cannot be underestimated. The restoration of the Rocky Creek igloo in Tolga is one such project, which will greatly benefit from the festival’s viability. The weather was noticeably milder, which appeared to be well received by everyone in attendance. Even the small droplets of rain that fell from sky felt like kisses of approval from above.

Melbourne Cup Day

Under the trees

At MAreeBA tUrF CLUB

Lyn French, Karen Brook and Karen Pederson enjoyed their time at de Bruey’s winery.

Rural women’s day celebrated in Mareeba By Justin Fris INTERNATIONAL Rural Women’s Day was an overwhelming success last Wednesday at de Bruey’s Winery in Mareeba. Coordinated by Northern Gulf Resource Management, rural women throughout the state gathered to increase networking, employment opportunities and overall contribution women make to rural communities. NGRM Education Officer Erica Blumson said the event had been heavily supported from the outset. “We had about 100 ladies attend our day sessions, with 75 locked in for the dinner tonight, she said. From the moment the ladies took their seats 9am, the smiles complimented the picturesque backdrop of the winery.

Facilitated by Julia Telford, a vibrant panel discussion ensued with local producers, who conveyed their knowledge and insight into rural life. After a hearty gourmet lunch, the group was split into several sections, with the option of selecting one (out of five) tailored business management sessions. As daylight slowly transformed into night, the dinner provided the light hearted component of the day. With a solid mixture of free wine tasting on deck, a show from the Mareeba Theatre Group and tales from Anna Daniels (from Channel 10’s The Project), you really couldn’t ask for a better evening. International Rural Women’s Day is a wonderful initiative that recognises the importance that women provide to our local communities. Long may this event continue to grow in the Tablelands.

New name and focus for group The Kuranda Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has been renamed the Kuranda District Chamber of Commerce. The move will see the entity focus on the businesses within the Kuranda Village center, hence the name change. Outgoing president Robert Mathews said: “We tried to expand and encourage businesses outside the village to join and take part and be involved in the discussions, the new Kuranda District Chamber of Commerce is designed to encompass all the way from Koah through to Black Mountain Road, Saddle Mountain Road and across the river and to try and encourage all the businesses regardless of their nature is so it’s not just related to tourism.” Mr. Mathews went on to say: “Since the new Mareeba Shire Council was formed in January we have found there has been a lot more open dialog not just with the councillors but also the Mayor, so from a point of view of their openness and willingness to discuss things quickly, has been an absolute pleasure compared to working under the TRC where things took a bit longer to present themselves, the new Council is a breath of fresh air.” One of the objectives of the new executive is to provide free Wi Fi to the Kuranda Village Centre, a project which the Bendigo Bank is willing to participate in. Once costs have been calculated a model for the project will be put in place in the hope that local businesses will embrace and see as a positive for the town. The new executive committee consists of new president, John Robinson, Vice president John Little, secretary Leone Durant and Treasurer Linda Snart.

The LAND Rare berry provides preliminary trial delight research trials, said he was surprised of the overall success of the study. “In 75% of cases, the tumour disappeared and did not come back,” he said. However there are certain limitations with the berry in question; due to the current size of sectors the Blushwood tree grows in. Yungaburra based organisation QBiotics, who have received ethical approval to begin human trials, were unavailable to comment.

A RARE berry grown exclusively on the Tablelands has provided joy to Queensland scientists after preliminary trial testing. Originally reported by Jessica van Vonderen (ABC) earlier in October, the berry grows on the Blushwood tree and provides a seed (experimental drug EBC46, which is derived from the berry seed) that has cured animals of tumours and melanomas during an eight year study at the QMIR Berghofer Institute in Brisbane. Dr Glen Boyle, who spearheaded the

Kuranda to get new reservoir FGF Developments has won the tender to design and construct a new reservoir in Kuranda as part of the Councils capitol works. After an assessment of water storage requirements throughout the Mareeba Shire by Aurecon Consulting Engineers, they identified the need for two , one mega litre reservoirs at Myola to meet the current and future water storage requirements in order to achieve required storage and fire reserves.

The assessment recommended that the Kuranda reservoirs be constructed in a staged approach with the first of the new reservoirs to be constructed during the 2014/2015 financial year. the new reservoirs will allow Council to meet its legislative and safety requirements under the “Water Act 2000” and the “Water Supply (Safety Reliability) Act 2008”. The construction is expected to cost just over $950.000

Hot bidding war at Mareeba By Justin Fris

THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 1303 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday October 14th, which was only narrowly down from the previous week. On a blisteringly hot day, the only thing more intense than sunlight was the competitiveness down the laneways. The source of cattle for the sale was quite staggering; almost all of FNQ was represented, much to the delight of all buyers and graziers. A common theme of late has been the attendance of three major processors buying out of the yards. Yet again, their presence intensified the bidding, which ensured firm stability in prices across the board. Steers ranging between 600-750kg were again in demand, with a line of four realising up to 204.2c/$1429.40.

Heifers increased in value overall, with an overall top price of 169.2c/$1099.80. This was evident, as the demand for local trade cattle was heavy. Heavier cows also maintained a steady incline, with a line of nine (520-650kg) selling up to 171.2c/ $1,044.32. The bull market was again stable, with heavier bodied types most sought after. These priced up to 161.2c/$1,120.32. Don’t forget to put the Tropical Brahman Bull Sale in your diary, as it is approaching quicker by the day! The sale will be held on Friday 21st November at the Mareeba Saleyards. If you would like to nominate your cattle for future sales, please contact your local agent or the Mareeba Saleyards on 0439 737 175. Sales commence at 9am on Tuesday, with all nominated cattle required by 7pm each Tuesday night (night before the sale).

Farmer all smiles after winning a ute and bike By Carl Portella

Barry Butler is probably the happiest man in the country, after purchasing two slings of Stockposts from TGT Rural in Mareeba. The East Palmerston farmer won a national competition which saw him collect a new Toyota 4WD Ute and Cougar quad Farm bike. Manager of TGT Rural Scott Green said, “When Barry’s name was drawn, we couldn’t locate him for a day and a half and there was a 48-hour period in which he could claim the prize,” he said. We finally did locate him with just six hours to go and believe me he was a happy man.” Queensland Sales Manager Whites Group Pty Ltd Mathew Stinson, who was on hand to hand over the keys to Barry said, “Most farmers would give their right arm to win a package like this,” he said. “We had the local dealership, Mareeba Toyota supply the vehicle and the new local distributor for Cougar Machinery, 2 Wheels and Wear, to supply the Quad farm bike. TGT Rural, where Barry made his purchase was instrumental in all the preparations for the hand over today.” Barry Butler was lost for words when collecting his prize and said, “All I did was buy some posts and I got a free ticket into a draw,” he said. “Then I got a call and I didn’t really know what it was about. Scott tried to locate me for a day or so and he eventually did,” “I couldn’t believe it. The ute and the bike will come in handy on the farm.”

Performance without the high price tag Over the last three years, the market has learnt to expect more from Whites, with the introduction of Stockpost and the unique Stockpost Ute Pack. This time Whites are out to make a big impact, with the introduction of its big Stockpost XL intermediate steel post range. Intermediate, or big steel posts, are used to help shore up long runs of fencing, much in the same way as large diameter timber posts have on many fences around the country. Whites National Product Manager Brian Gray, says the new product will help resellers give farmers and fencing contractors exactly what they have been looking for. “This new line was developed on the back of Barry Butler receives the keys to his new Toyota ute from Mathew Stinson,Qld Sales Manager Whites Group Pty Ltd. customer feedback. The Stockpost XL has been designed with extra holes so affordable,” he said. “Intermediate steel posts can be driven with arguably as well as being ideal for regular fencing it’s also suitable less effort. When his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) disappears the story becomes the focus of an intense media circus. Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent. Review by Louise Keller: As far as adaptations go, this is one of the best, Gillian Flynn's screenplay perfectly capturing the tone of her sensational novel, in which we witness a dark portrait of a marriage. David Fincher handles the material with the same intensity as he did with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, cutting through the facade of a seemingly perfect relationship with the acerbic brush of truth. It's a mesmerizing and claustrophobic tale in which the dark innermost recesses of the mind are explored and where secrets, roleplaying, retaining control and manipulating perceptions glide and slide like slippery snakes in a bottomless pit. As the beautiful couple that has it all, the casting is perfect: Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike convey every complexity as the layers of superficiality are peeled away. With its dark lighting and tense music, Fincher's film is edgy throughout; we are never let off the hook or out of the clutches of the twilight zone of the disintegrated marriage in which pretence is a key ingredient. It's disturbingly good. As well as dense, entertaining, funny, insightful and more.

DIGGER'S BISTRO

The law may be black and white but there is nothing black and white about the father son relationship in this potent drama that comes to a blistering head during a murder trial. Relying on the talents of Robert Downey Jnr and Robert Duval as the son who defends the rich and guilty and the father who believes in the truth, appropriately enough, it is in the middle of a cyclone that the fury is finally unleashed between the two. That's when all the demons of the past start to spit their venom and what has long remained unsaid is expressed. After a string of comedies including Wedding Crashers and Shanghai Knights, director David Dobkin is fastidious in his handling of the material. But there is much to enjoy with its dysfunctional 'Picasso painting family' and great performances from Downey Jnr and Duval. I other players also impact. Family issues come to light with Vincent D'Onofrio effective as Hank's older brother Glenn, whose career potential as a baseball player was thwarted and Jeremy Strong as the younger, retarded brother Dale, whose focus is home movies. There is sadness with both of these characters. Vera Farmiga is terrific as the girl who owns the local bar and used to be Hank's high school girlfriend, although her Samantha would be more credible in the environment if she were not presented as such a blonde glamour-girl. Watch out for Billy Bob Thornton as the focused prosecuting lawyer who believes the law keeps things equal. The heavy artillery is the verbal and emotional combat between father and son, as Hank gets drawn into defending his father, when the latter is accused of murder late at night on a wet road. The court room scenes are gripping. Like Hank, we never know exactly what his father is going to say; Joseph intent on retaining the credibility he has earned over 42 years presiding on the bench. Hank's focus is to use every legal trick in the book to ensure his father stays out of jail. The pain in both their eyes tell the story. Good to see Downey Jnr in a dramatic role again. It's a powerhouse of a film, worth seeing for the performances alone.

The fable unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least that's the legend residents have always believed. In truth the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and loveable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells.

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sprinkle each side of the chicken cutlet lightly with salt and let stand at room temperature 20 minutes. 2. Combine Mozzarella and Provolone cheese in a bowl, set aside. 3. Whisk together flour and egg until smooth. In a separate shallow dish, toss together Panko bread crumbs, Romano cheese, oregano, lemon zest, garlic powder and 1/4 tsp pepper. 4. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Dredge chicken in egg mixture coating both sides and allowing excess to run off, then immediately transfer to Romano mixture and coat both sides with mixture, while pressing gently to allow crumbs to adhere. 5. Pour olive oil and vegetable oil into a skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Once oil is hot, add chicken cutlets and fry without moving them until bottom is crispy and golden brown and flip. 6. Place cutlets on a baking sheet, sprinkle tops with Mozzaralle cheese mixture and transfer to preheated oven to bake for about 12 minutes. Remove from oven and garnish with lemon slices or wedges, serve warm. Squeeze fresh lemon juice from lemon slices over chicken just before enjoying.

Opportunities for advancement at work are apparent. Your emotional attitude with respect to your status and direction in society may be unrealistic.

Inter-town basketball carnival The Mareeba teams performed tremendously well in the inter-town competition played in Atherton last Saturday. Playing in 14 Senior and Junior fixtures, the Mareeba sides recorded 12 victories. Both the senior mens and ladies gained victories in their fixtures. The Mens side narrowly defeated Atherton by 44 to 42 and were 13 points winners over Mulgrave. While the Ladies remain undefeated in the competition after a comfortable 22 to 13 win against Atherton. The Mareeba Under 16/18’s Girls continued on their winning way. After a narrow 19 to 15 defeat of Mulgrave side, they convincingly accounted for Atherton by 16 points to remain unde-

feated. However the Mulgrave Under 18’s Boys overcame the Mareeba Juniors, defeating them by 48 to 36. The Under 16’s Boys convincingly defeated both Atherton and Mulgrave. While the Under 14’s Boys registered impressive wins over Atherton and Port Douglas. After easily accounting for Atherton, the Under 12’s Mareeba Boys then lost to Port Douglas by 22 to 20. The young Under 10’s Juniors recorded good wins over Atherton and Mulgrave. Certainly a great effort by all the Mareeba teams who should feel confident of success when they compete in the concluding round at Port Douglas on November 15.

Mareeba High’s sporting showcase By Justin Fris

THE dulcet tone of Craig Foster rang soundly around the Mareeba International Club on Thursday night, as Mareeba SHS students celebrated another successful sports presentation night. From the opening minutes as guests strolled in, you got the feeling that the local community would be treated to a unique evening of fun, but also justified recognition of so much effort shed

in a bid for personal and school pride. The first champion crowned for the evening was Sarrah Myrteza, who took out Junior Sports Star of the Year. Ms Myrteza was reflective in collection of the award, and extremely graceful in acceptance. Monique Ebner took home the prestigious Pierre De Courbertin award, which is regarded as one of highest individual honours that an athlete can earn.

Awards like this don’t come easy, nor should they. But the sheer modesty from all athletes that took the stage was awe inspiring to watch. As the night wore on, it was evident several students were multi-skilled at several sports, which is an extremely beneficial asset to the future of sports in our community. This rare feat was not lost on the event’s guest speaker, Craig Foster. In his address to guests, Foster urged students

to follow through on four key principles if they wished to aim for their sporting dream: courage, character, dedication and persistence. These qualities definitely apply to Brock Hawke, who took home the Senior Sports Star of the Year award. Officials are still adjudicating a photo finish in terms of size differentiation between Hawke’s smile and his shield. The MSHS sports presentation night is held each year to recognise sporting success.

CROC trophy snaps into action

THE sheer drama of a football penalty shoot-out cannot be matched in world sport. As we take a look back over the years, players such as Roberto Baggio (Italy), Andreas Brehmer (West Germany) and John Aloisi (Australia) have had their career’s defined by success or failure in a shoot-out. Although not beamed around the world to millions, Thursday’s series of shoot-out competitions at Mareeba SHS were every bit as tense. With the sun burning fiercely into their stride, each player irrespective of age or gender, stepped up and took their shot. Some students went for placement, others for power. Several exquisite finishes rifled their way into the net, while others almost landed in Atherton. The Mareeba Bulls had several representatives in at-

THE TABLELANDS is set to be overrun by elite company, with the Crocodile trophy mountain bike race set to test riders’ skill and mental capacity. In its 20th year, the CROC trophy has now received official recognition from the International Cycling Union (UCI), meaning riders will receive UCI recognition points to add toward their overall international ranking. Between October 18-26, riders will be pitted against 770km of terrain, over a series of nine stages. Competitors from 20 different nations will be represented, spanning the world’s circumference. The first stage began last Saturday in Smithfield and will conclude in Port Douglas on Sunday. Riders not only will face the sheer intensity of distance, they will also need to

contend with humidity and elevation differentiation for each stage of the race. But above all, the overall legacy of the race could prosper Tablelands businesses for several years to come. With a solid following in both Asia & Europe, our region will be beamed to millions around the world in all its glory. In turn, the event will not only bring participants, but relatives and spectators. Their injection into the economy through positive experiences can lead to an overall increase of tourism to an already flourishing region. EXPRESS sPORT Down to the wire By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba United (Bulls) Football Club’s end of season presentation night had a fitting climax, with veteran Wayne Srhoj and promising youngster Ben Fresta tying for the Bulls player of the year award on Saturday night. A night which was always going to stir a whirlwind of emotion for all in attendance duly delivered; but saying that, no one could have predicted the tense nature of the count. Srhoj’s early performances saw him poll heavily and a handsome victory appeared certain. But like a reliable Mercedes shifting through the gears, Fresta turned on the jets midway through the season. Fresta and Srhoj both finished on 14 votes, with Victor Madrid finishing in 3rd place with 12 votes. In many ways, it was a deserved outcome for the entire football club. On one hand, a wily veteran with exceptional leadership was rewarded for his indispensable nature, while Fresta’s youth documented the level of talent coming through the lower grades. Both men were deserved winners of the crown, but they were not the only ones to walk away with major award glory on the night. Nicole Ghensi was awarded player of the year for the ladies team, which was overwhelmingly endorsed by the audience. Ghensi and her teammates appear to have a bright future in football, if their camaraderie as a unit is anything to go by. Adrian Madrid was endorsed by club officials as one of the club’s rising stars, along with Celie Henderson. Henderson almost needed a wheelbarrow with her on the night, also winning the ladies best and fairest and players’ player awards. As you can tell by the surrounding images, all award winners and officials were very happy with the how the night went to cap off a memorable year.

Bandits rip through bitter rival By Justin Fris THE Mareeba Bandits continued their winning ways, with a statisfying 17 run victory over perrenial rivals Rovers on Sunday. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the hosts began their innings in the worst way possible, being 1/0 after only the second ball of the day. Enter Rob Taylor and Brendan Payne. Taylor eased the Bandits into the match with a quick knock of 33, while Payne entrenched himself in the innings with a swashbuckling 85. But the duo’s fun eventually came to an end, with the middle order failing to cash in on the ideal batting deck. Posting 7/169 off their allotted 30 over innings, the Bandits unleashed a solid spell of disciplined bowling, which set the visitors on the back foot from the opening delivery. The luckless visitors were eventually dismissed for 152 in the 28th over of their run chase. Payne, who had already starred with the willow, worked his

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

magic with the ball and delivered a superlative spell of 4/28 off his six overs. Shane Gisell also had the visitors in a spin, picking up 3/35. But this match will be remembered for two special performances by Bandits players. The first, was the furher emergance of Lachlan Ford as a top class bowler. With economical figures of 2/10, his bowling should have opposition batsman fearing upcoming contests. Bandits officals were overjoyed with the imput of Cam McPherson, who is currently enjoy a rich vein of form. Standing proudly in first slip, McPherson took two spectacular catches, which had his teammates in raptures of delight. It is moments like this why we love community level sport so much. The Bandits will now travel to Cairns on Sunday, where they will face Norths. The club would like to thank a number of its loyal volunteers, who make matchday run smoothly. Volunteers are the lifeblood of club cricket and it is wonderful that members of the community are able to assist in the many ways that they do.
