$8m cyclone clean up By Ryan Groube

T

he cleanup bill from Tropical Cyclone Ita is expected to top $8 million in the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) area. Kuranda and northern areas of the MSC, including Julatten, were the hardest hit by the Category 1 system when it passed through the Tableland on April 12. At the April 16 MSC meeting officers told council that preliminary damage estimates provided to the Queensland Reconstruction Author-

ity was in the vicinity of $8 million. Later that day, State Recovery Co-ordinator Inspector Kev Guteridge and Community Recovery and Resilience Minister David Crisafulli travelled to Kuranda to inspect damage and recovery work. During the visit the pair spoke with Kuranda SES local controller Carol Day who said cyclone Ita had kept them busier than Yasi in 2011. Kuranda SES responded to 43 jobs and completed all outstanding work on the day of Mr Gutheride and Mr Crisafulli’s visit. Ms Day said about 40 SES members from

units in Kuranda, Atherton, Mareeba, Cairns and Gordonvale all participated in the recovery effort as well as volunteers from the rural fire brigade. “We had eight houses with roofs damaged after trees fell on them and one house that needed sandbagging,” she said. The remaining jobs predominately included clearing trees from driveways and roads with one job taking the Speewah Rural Fire Brigade nine hours. “This is my first major, major event in the six years I have been with the SES,” Ms Day said.

Egg and spoon races (with the eggs wisely swapped out for golf balls) at Easter in the Park.

Easter spirit and the lure of tasty chocolate eggs brought families from all over the region to Kuranda on April 19. The crowd, estimated to number around 7000, also meant that the town’s shops and cafes were packed full as tourists and locals alike turned out for jumping castles, live music, busking, carriage rides and most importantly loads of Easter eggs. Member for Barron Michael Trout joined the Easter Bunny atop a crane platform high above Centenary Park to toss over 10,000 Easter eggs into the waiting crowd below to the delight of kids and their parents. Violette Dobbie, 6, from Trinity Beach, along with her friend Juliette Boussard and brother Marius, collected 20 eggs in their basket. “The man in the crane threw them down onto the ground and I ran along the ground and picked them up,” Violette said. “I love Easter Eggs even though I don’t like chocolate cake or chocolate

ice cream.” Juliette, also 6, said she and her friend spent every Easter together: “I like Easter because I like staying with friends and family,” she said. Tourism Kuranda co-ordinator Marc Sleeman said Easter in the Park had continued to grow in success and raise the village’s profile. “This is a free day designed to bring people from Cairns, Mareeba, Atherton, everywhere basically, and remind them that Kuranda is such a great place to visit,” he said. “It’s our biggest day of the year when it comes to tourism and it’s getting bigger - I estimate today that numbers are up 20 to 30 per cent on last year and at 10am the whole park was packed, previously it would take until about 11am for these kind of numbers to get up. “Another great thing is that a lot of the visitors here today will be heading out to the Tablelands for the afternoon after they finish in Kuranda, so it’s a massive tourism boost for the whole region.”

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro is thrilled about the arrival of broadband to the region.

Broadband’s on its way! By Boyd Robertson Internet enthusiasts and entrepreneurs alike have reason to smile with the news that physical construction has begun on National Broadband Network (NBN) services for the Mareeba area. On April 17 NBNco began construction on a fixed-wireless emitter at Blacks Road, and said in a press release that that the system would service ‘Mareeba North and surrounds’. It is expected NBN services will be available to Mareeba consumers in about 12 months. Wireless emitters are designed to broadcast broadband signals to the less-populated areas of Australia like radio towers, as opposed to fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) or fibre-to-thenode (FTTN) methods used for cities. Wireless NBN speeds are advertised at a maximum of 25 megabytes per second for download and five megabytes per second for upload.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said the arrival of NBN services would be a massive boon to the town’s economic opportunities. “There’s a huge benefit from this technology - the sooner we get better internet connection through the NBN, the sooner we can access the immense business opportunities that come with it,” Mr Moro said. “Small businesses can benefit from a muchimproved connection with the rest of the world – people will have the opportunity to set up businesses from their own home, meaning you don’t have to live in Sydney or another big city to run a business like that. “It’s a win-win, really, people will be able to live in this beautiful area in a family-friendly environment and have all the opportunities they would elsewhere, particularly with an international airport less than an hour’s drive away.” NBN Co spokesperson Ryan Williams

said the fixed wireless service can bring better broadband to the bush. “For decades, rural and regional Australia has been left behind when it comes to telecommunications,” he said. “The fixed wireless service is designed to provide access to internet speeds and bandwidth that many in the big cities currently take for granted. “The NBN also means you can get the whole family online at once, opening up opportunities for local farms, businesses and the wider region to participate in the digital age - fast broadband can help deliver improved access to health, education and entertainment over high quality video links.” The ultimate form and pricetag of the NBN has become a political football in federal politics, with the new Liberal government introducing a massive and controversial design overhaul of the service.

Heritage Centre upgrade By Ryan Groube A proposed $400,000 expansion of the Mareeba Heritage Centre has received the backing of the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC). At the April 16 MSC meeting, Council unanimously voted to grant the project preliminary approval to build a new building at the Centenary Park site. The Mareeba Heritage Centre Incorporated committee will still have to comply with all planning and building requirements but the preliminary approval marks a major step forward for the project. Committee Chair Ron Blundell said the preliminary approval would kick start

a major community fund-raising campaign. Mr Blundell said the committee had $150,000 in the bank and hoped to raise about $100,000 through the community while leveraging the rest of the money required from government and private grants programs. Mr Blundell said donations of $2000 will get a gold sponsorship, $5000 for diamond and $10,000 for platinum. All sponsors will have their contribution recognised on a plaque at the entrance to the new building once it has been completed. Mr Blundell said the new building was desperately needed.

2014 Anzac Day to mark the 99th year of Gallipoli By Ryan Groube ANZAC Day 2014 will mark the 99th year since Australian and New Zealand troops landed at Gallipoli. On Friday, hundreds of Tablelanders will flock to Anzac day marches and dawn ceremonies across the region. Mareeba RSL sub-branch president Eric Bradford said he has been delighted with the town’s continued support of formal Anzac Day commemorations. In 2014, the Mareeba dawn service will be held at 4.40am with those in the parade to form up at the RSL at 4.15am. Last year, the dawn service saw about 30 people march in the parade with about 130 people attending the event.

Following the dawn service a breakfast will be held at the Mareeba RSL. The main parade will begin at 9.45am with the service to be held at 10.15am. Councillor Allan Holmes will be the Master of Ceremonies while Roy Blakeney has been named as the parade master. After the main parade, veterans and invited guests will return to the RSL for lunch as well as a customary game of two-up. Officers from Mareeba’s criminal investigation branch will officially get the two-up started with members of the Dad’s Army wheelbarrow race team to take over. Mr Bradford said with 2015 marking the 100th year of the landing at Gallipoli he was hoping to attract some new faces to help organise the milestone event.

Mareeba RSL sub-branch president Eric Bradford has urged locals to support Anzac Day services on Friday.

EXPRESS yourself Building purchase ‘unnecessary’ So, the TRC Mayor and a couple of my fellow councillors are ‘reeling’ (Tablelander 15 April) after the State Government has refused to make Mareeba Shire pay for the $1.3million Taj Mahal in Atherton, bought with ratepayers dollars without either consulting them or advising them about the proposed purchase. It is no secret that I vehemently opposed this purchase and continue to do so and I agree entirely with the Minister when he says that Mareeba Shire residents and ratepayers should not be asked to foot the bill, for something that was unnecessary and unwarrented and which only serves to give this centralisationist focussed council the ammunition to further reduce services to our regional towns. The people of Malanda and Herberton should be aware that there are proposals about the future of both the Herberton and Malanda Council Offices and regional libraries coming to a council meeting shortly. And of course, the mantra that will be used is that ‘times are tight and we have to make efficiencies’. With true ‘southeast corner’ mentality though, you can bet it will only be the smaller communities which will cop the knife while

money continues to be thrown around in empire building in a certain place. TRC Councillor Shaaron Linwood. Ratepayer disgusted with council Along with my family, and a concerned group of citizens I attended the Tablelands Regional Council meeting on Thursday. Not only were we all very disappointed with the outcome of the meeting, but we were all extremely disgusted with the way our Council meeting was run. We were in attendance to observe the Council voting on a submission put to Council for the rezoning of a currently Rural property into Rural Residential in the new TRC Draft Plan. We were aware that the discussions leading to the decision were confidential. However, we were also led to believe that the boardroom doors would be open for us to observe and receive the result of this important decision being made. This was not to be. After being removed from the Board room for confidentiality reasons on three occasions, we were finally

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au The Express reserves the right to edit letters

allowed back into the room, only to find the rezoning decision had been finalised. When asked for the result the Mayor refused to give an answer and told us “go and look it up on the website next week.” After then being fronted by further requests for an answer, the Mayor said “You can please yourselves!” and left for morning tea. In amongst this disgusting behaviour by the Mayor, Councillor Pagani tried several times to help the waiting crowd with an answer, only to be forced by the Mayor to butt out. The message we did get through to us by Councillor Pagani in her effort to satisfy those waiting was “The Mayor has used her casting vote again so you know the result. The casting vote was used TWICE again!” As a Ratepayer of TRC I feel strongly for all ratepayers of TRC with deep concern for the way our Council is being run. How much more Ratepayer’s money and precious time has to be wasted on one decision already made by Genuine Councillors, Ministers for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Department and Judge Everson in the Queensland Environmental Court? Divide widens among councillors By Boyd Robertson Yet another session of the remnant Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has descended into farce in front of a disappointed public. Conflict between Mayor Rosa Lee Long and councillor Marjorie Pagani repeatedly delayed the beginning April 17 meeting, with the Mayor forced to use her casting vote several times to break deadlocks between council’s two internal factions. Cr Lee Long, deputy Mayor Geoff Stocker and Atherton-based councillor Peter Hodge regularly vote together, opposing councillors Pagani, Rod Marti and Shaaron Linwood.

Cr Lee Long’s extra casting vote gives her bloc an unbeatable edge should a deadlock arise. Cr Pagani first disputed council’s record of the previous meetings, claiming an item was missing a paragraph that would commit council investigating the installation of disabled-access toilets at Yungaburra’s Avenue of Honour. Later in the meeting Cr Pagani called the Mayor out over her submission of a letter to the Joint Select Committee On Northern Australia, claiming that Cr Lee Long had passed her own opinions off as council’s without consulting other members. At the very end of the meeting during confi-

dential proceedings Cr Lee Long used her extra vote to defeat a motion that would prevent the conversion of a large block of agricultural land outside Atherton into a residential zone, before using the vote again to push discussion of the matter to the next meeting on May 1. Despite the mounting dysfunction of the TRC since de-amalgamation, Cr Lee Long said such arguments were part of the normal ‘argy-bargy’ of council and pointed out that most items in the meeting had been carried unanimously. “It’s important that these discussions take place, it’s part of the argy-bargy of council and we’ve got to accept that,” she said. “Before de-

amalgamation I used the casting vote several times and there was no outcry over it then.” Cr Lee Long said that Cr Pagani was entitled to argue in meetings but added that she had the power to discipline the rouge councillor if necessary. “I did warn councillor Pagani that in extreme cases she can be disciplined or sent from the council chambers,” she said. The display of internal conflict did not go down well with the 20 members of public present at the meeting. It was Atherton resident Trevor Sorenson’s first time witnessing a council meeting. “Everyone needs to have a look at the undemocratic process of council.” he said.

‘Remove calcium, not arsenic’ says Chillagoe Alliance By Ryan Groube

The Chillagoe Alliance is bewildered by a decision to remove trace amounts of arsenic, rather than calcium carbonate, from the remote western town’s water supply. In March, the State Government allocated the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) $300,000 to remove arsenic from Chillagoe’s water supply which is drawn from a bore. The town’s lobby group is unconcerned about the trace arsenic levels of about 0.1 milligrams per litre, marginally higher than World Health Organisation [WHO] standards. Of bigger concern to the Chillagoe Alliance is the amount of lime scale in the water supply. At the April 16 MSC meeting, council rejected a proposal to install ‘water softening’ infrastructure in Chillagoe. A report to council said installing the infrastructure in Chillagoe was unaffordable. “The capital cost of the salt water softener would be $60,000 to $70,000 plus site installation,” the report said. “The backwash water for a water softening plant is not suitable for release into the environment and as a result the backwash water would have to be treated to neutralise the pH and to partially remove the salinity content. “Therefore, a water softening option would require a dedicated sewer connection due to the volumes of backwash waste. Given that Chillagoe

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

does not have sewer reticulation or a wastewater treatment plant this makes it unfeasible.” Chillagoe Alliance president Dave Chant, who is also a geologist, said the water softening infrastructure “was the only thing of any use” for locals. “It is a farce as far as removing the arsenic is concerned,” he said. “Any natural stream on the Tableland would have higher levels of arsenic. We are talking 15 parts per billion and the WHO came up with this arbitrary figure of 10 [parts] as being safe.” Mr Chant said the water in Chillagoe was fine other than being “very high in calcium carbonate” which reacts to water to create lime scale.” He rejected council’s assertion that the water was unsafe to put back into the environment. “All you are doing is putting lime back into the limestone. It is coming back the exact same as it came out,” he said. Council said that individual residents could install individual Household Water Softening Units themselves but that the cost would be about $3000. The motion to reject funding the plant was unanimous but Cr Allan Holmes said “we are providing a pretty ordinary quality of household water” to these people. Mr Chant did say that he was pleased the three councillors took the time to attend the Chillagoe Alliance’s latest meeting on March 30.

EARLY SETTLERS

One of our most interesting & informative displays at The Heritage Centre is that of the Early Settlers. The settler’s homes were very basic; poles from trees, iron sheeting, hessian bags, bark, & dirt floors. Some homes were a little more sophisticated with ant-bed floors; this was crushed ant-bed mixed to slurry with a little water. This mixture set like cement. The housewife saved moistened tea leaves and sprinkled them on the floor, then lightly swept them up. This eliminated quite a bit of dust from the floor. Shelves decorated with fancily cut paper, the hanging Bush Pantry and the heavy & cumbersome irons heating on the wood stove are all here to see.

The display features quite a number of items from yesteryear which fascinate the children on school tours. These include an original ice box which one student thought might be an old fashioned microwave. Others were amazed with the old Record Player. After listening, with big eyes & mouth agape to a recording of “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic”, one young fellow said “how do you change the channel?” and of course, the “Gazunda” (the under the bed potty), invokes many & varied responses, like UGH! or GROSS!; but one young brash boy said “COOL”. I then said “OK, so you’ll not mind emptying & washing it in the morning?” Master Brash stepped backwards and said “What me? No way!”

Prizes up for grabs The Atherton Show has announced its prize structure for its popular metalwork competition. This year prize money has increased for individual classes with $100 up for grabs for best exhibit in the Open and Secondary School divisions. The Metalwork competition is sponsored by Wilkinson’s Blacksmith and Engineering with owner John Wilkinson saying competition is always fierce. “Our local show is still a great place to show off the skills of people in the area,” he said. “There have been some amazing entries over the years.” Sub-section entries will also go in the running for cash prizes of $25 for first, $15 for second with third place picking up $10. It costs $1 to enter the competition. Mr Wilkinson urged people to not leave preparing their entries until too late. The schedule and entry forms is available online at www. athertonshow.com.au The Atherton Show is held on July 7 and 8. Fireworks fund-raiser

Port Douglas Carnivale will kick off with a bang with local businesses getting behind the annual colourful fireworks display raising a combined $9500. Port Douglas Carnivale general manager Roy Weavers said many people were not aware that it was the town’s business owners that paid for the fireworks that take centre stage after the Macrossan Street Parade on the opening Friday. He said driving this support was Rhys Bawden, owner of Salsa Bar & Grill. “With the help of Salsa Bar & Grill, Port Douglas Carnivale now has $9500 for our annual fireworks display – this is our best year yet,” Mr Weavers said. Big contributors included the Courthouse Hotel who donated $2000 along with Salsa Bar & Grill Salsa who donated $1000 plus their time and administration support to gather the donations as well as By the Sea Apartments and The Combined Club who also each gave $1000. Mr Bawden said each year they continued to be humbled by the generous donations coming forth from local businesses, many who have no direct link with the fireworks. “It is admirable to see these businesses digging deep time and time again as they understand the impact a fantastic family event like Carnivale has on the whole community.” “Each year we ask our friends of the business community to help out with donations and they do, every time, and we couldn’t be more grateful.” Port Douglas Carnivale celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2014 and will be held from May 16 to 25.

Queensland graziers have received a boost in the fight against prickly acacia and bellyache bush with the State Govern-

ment announcing $1.88 million to combat the weeds. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said the weeds, which infest more than six million hectares of western grazing lands, were a serious problem for property owners from Julia Creek, to Hughenden and down to Longreach. “The ‘War on Western Weeds’ initiative will integrate latest research and on-ground control to fight the spread of these weeds and support our vision to double agriculture production by 2040,” Mr McVeigh said. “These weeds decrease pasture production, make mustering difficult, damage vehicle tyres, decrease access to water and result in declined land values.” Mr McVeigh said studies indicate that a 50 per cent prickly acacia canopy cover reduces Mitchell grass production by up to 100 per cent. “The Newman Government is accelerating our bio-control, chemical and mechanical control research to stop the spread and reduce these weeds in our grazing regions,” Mr McVeigh said. “Over the past couple of years I have met and discussed weed control strategies with producers in the west. “As part of this program we have three insects being tested for bio-control effectiveness. “We are also undertaking herbicide misting trials as part of our on-ground control research. “We will be working with industry and the community on ways to stop the spread of weed seeds to better protect productive grazing lands.” For more information on prickly acacia and bellyache bush, visit www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23.

Kuranda ‘pods’ unveiling

Mayor Tom Gilmore will officially open the Kuranda Walkway Pods at 1pm on May 1 along with the Kuranda community. “The Kuranda Pedestrian Pods Project will really boost the appearance and amenity of the walkway on Coondoo Street, from the Railway Station/Skyrail terminal area to the Police Station,” Mr Gilmore said. “The project comprises a series of fully accessible pathways, partially covered, and covered interpretive ‘pods’ in the lower Coondoo Street area to provide both shelter and an improved entry experience for visitors between the train station and the village. “The Kuranda Walkway Pods are architect-designed structures which also add to the visual amenity of the village. The $479,000 project was funded by the Kuranda Infrastructure Levy. Works involved in the project include: construction of the hyperbolic roof form, refurbishment of the walkway base, installation of block-work walls and landscaping. The walkway opened to the public on October 2, 2013.

we’re delivering double that number,” Mr Langbroek said. “That includes seventy Queensland students and 10 chaperones next year to mark the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings. “The Premier’s Anzac Prize provides an unforgettable educational experience which helps ensure important lessons of the past are learned and that Queenslanders keep the Anzac spirit alive.” Mr Langbroek said all Year 8 to 11 students could now enter the 2015 competition, which closed on 19 September 2014. “Students have to submit an original, two to five minute multimedia presentation on how the Anzac tradition shaped our nation, why it is still important and how future generations can keep the spirit alive,” he said. Mr Langbroek yesterday congratulated the five 2014 Prize winners and presented them with poppies, small Australian flags and hats as they embarked on their two-week journey to the Western Front and Gallipoli. He farewelled the students and chaperones at the Remember me: the lost diggers of Vignacourt exhibition at the Queensland Museum, which was the first stop for the Australian War Memorial’s touring collection. “This contingent will travel to Turkey, Belgium and France as last year’s winners did,” he said. Mental health support for drought-affected communities

Drought-affected communities in Queensland and New South Wales will have increased access to free counselling under a $10.7 million Australian Government investment in targeted social and community support. The Minister for Social Services, Kevin Andrews, and the Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, today said the investment was a key element of the Government’s $320 million package of support for businesses, farm families and rural communities facing hardship brought on by drought. “The Australian Government understands that some farmers, farm families and rural communities are doing it tough because of the prolonged severe drought and this can affect their mental health and wellbeing,” Mr Andrews said. “That is why we are investing $10.7 million in additional help, including one-to-one counselling, family support services and referrals and outreach, to people in need in drought-affected communities. “The Department of Human Services has drought coordinators who will help to ensure good communication and coordination between service providers, so they can best support those in need.” Mr Joyce said the funds will be delivered through the Family Support Program and Targeted Community Care (Mental Health) Program to 22 existing service providers across drought-affected areas in Queensland and New South Wales. “The funds will allow providers to go out to these communities, promote support services through community events and offer individual counselling,” Mr Joyce said. “The providers will also work with other government and nongovernment services, such as the Rural Financial Counselling Service, health services, emergency relief and other community support organisations, to provide a full range of support to these communities.” A list of service providers which will receive the additional funds is at www.dss.gov.au/mental-health/news/drought-assistance.

State Recovery Co-ordinator Inspector Kev Guteridge, Community Recovery and Resilience Minister David Crisafulli, Kuranda SES local controller Carol Day and Member for Barron River Michael Trout in Kuranda.

‘Great variance’ in storm damage FROM PAGE 1 “In the first few days this one [recovery effort] has been better than the one in [the 2013] Bundaberg [floods],” he said. “The SES has been incredible, Ergon [Energy] has been incredible and council crews are running around everywhere to get this back running. “It is still early days and we will have a better handle on the figures in the next couple of days but it will be significant. “I will look all far north Queenslanders in the eye and say they will see things done like they have never seen before.” Mr Crisafulli did concede that there was nowhere near enough money in the recently established Emergency Management, Fire and Rescue Levy to cover the bill. The State Government began collecting the levy in January, 2014 “to ensure a more sustainable funding base for all emergency services”. Mr Guteridge, who oversaw the cleanup after the Bundaberg floods, said it was important the recovery work was done as soon as possible. Despite the Tableland being largely unaffected by the system, Mr Guteridge said there was a “great variance” in damage across the far north. “Already much of the highly visible stuff has been trimmed down,” he said. “It is a good outcome for the community if we can get what we need to do done today rather than tomorrow.” Mr Guteridge did concede that a lot of the “resilience” works however could take some time to complete. A spokesperson from Transport and Main Roads (TMR) said Cyclone Ita had minimal impact on upgrades to the Kuranda Range Road although there would be a slight blowout in the estimated completion time. “Cyclone Ita caused no structural damage to current

works on Kuranda Range but there was minor scouring at various sites which will require repair,” the spokesperson said. “Protection works and environmental control measures performed well throughout the cyclone and downpour. “The contractor is carrying out minor repairs and maintenance on the environmental controls before the Easter weekend. As a result of Cyclone Ita works have been delayed by seven working days.” Tableland Canegrowers held their pre harvest meeting on April 16 and said the impact of the cyclone had been less than feared. Manager of Tableland Canegrowers Bronwyn Dwyer said large areas of the ‘plant crop’ had been flattened but there was very little snapped cane. “All in all we dodged a bullet and there will not be a huge financial impact on our growers,” she said. “It could have been a hell of a lot worse.” The State Government has announced farmers impacted by Ita will have access to financial support, including concessional loans and freight subsidies. Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister John McVeigh visited farmers in Bowen, Ingham and Hope Vale and said Category B disaster assistance was available in 16 shires under standard Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. “These arrangements provide freight subsidies up to $5,000 and access to concessional loans from QRAA up to $250,000 at an interest rate of 1.7 per cent,” Mr McVeigh said. “Freight subsidies are up to 50 per cent of the cost of transport of livestock, fodder or water for livestock and building or fencing equipment or machinery a direct result of the natural disaster.” The funding is available in the following shires: Burdekin, Cairns, Cassowary Coast, Cook, Douglas, Hinchinbrook, Hope Vale, Lockhart River, Mackay, Mareeba, Palm Island, Tablelands, Townsville, Whitsunday, Wujal Wujal and Yarrabah.

Jai Lawson and Ben Boyton tuck in at the Mareeba Leagues Club after helping clean up Cooktown in the wake of Cyclone Ita.

Well-deserved feed for volunteers after cyclone By Boyd Robertson SES volunteers deployed in Cooktown for repairs in the aftermath of Cyclone got a well-deserved feed at the Mareeba Leagues Club on April 17. About 30 of the orange jumpsuitclad volunteers from SES Task Forces Delta and Foxtrot crowded into the club and immediately set to wolfing down hearty meals. The volunteers have been hailed as heroes after spending three days in suffocating heat and humidity clearing fallen trees and repairing damaged roofs in Ita’s wake, arriving early on April 14 and finishing late on April 16.

Volunteer Wayne Wilds said the work had been hard but he and many of his colleagues could go another round. “You come out of it actually pretty pumped, you feel like you could go another couple of days,” he said. “It was a lot of work, though – Monday was boiling hot and then Tuesday it just bucketed down rain, so you were always wet either from sweat or from rain.” Mareeba Leagues Club manager Lucy Maddalena said the club was more than happy to host the volunteers. “We’ve very proud to have them here,” she said.

Siam Weed

Chromolaena odorata Siam has been called “the world’s worst weed” It is a native of Central and South America and has spread as a weed to Africa, India and South East Asia. It is also infesting Southern China, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia. First Found growing on the Tully River in 1994, it has quickly spread and become a concern in the Herbert River country, Townsville and Mossman. Siam will heavily impact on the grazing industry, banana, horticulture and cane farms. Both the wet and dry tropics regions are under threat from this invasive plant along with ecologically important conservation areas. Siam weed has been responsible for stock losses and in susceptible people, it can cause skin and respiratory complaints. We are calling on the public to report suspected sightings. All reports will be followed up and we will be sure to return a call to you to let you know what was found and what actions were taken. This plant will be coming into flower over the next few months, so if any scrambling vines are seen with mass flowers ranging from cream through to lilac please call Council on 1300 308 461.

It's great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there's no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp. Review by Louise Keller: As a comic book visual spectacle, this sequel excels with its amazing digital effects, sense of free-fall and flippant humour. Like the original 2012 film, director Marc Webb exhibits a great sense of freedom, allowing us to feel as though we are flying with Spider-Man as he leaps, flies and swings between New York's skyscrapers, as he brings hope to the flawed world. The film's dynamic lies with the big, bigger and biggest special effects. There is plenty of action - cars flipping, trucks crashing, buildings collapsing, glass shattering and electricity zigzagging in every direction. The editing is fast and much of the action is in your face.

Woodley) makes a choice that surprises everyone. Then Tris and her fellow faction-members have to live through a highly competitive initiation process to live out the choice they have made. They must undergo extreme physical and intense psychological tests that transform them all. But Tris has a secret that she is Divergent - she doesn't fit into any group. If anyone knew, it would mean a certain death. As she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, this secret might help her save the people she loves... or it might destroy her. Review by Louise Keller: Totalitarianism versus the individual is the basic concept of Divergent, a thrilling sci-fi adventure that is every bit as good as The Hunger Games with a dash of The Matrix added for good measure. In a career-making role, Shailene Woodley carries the hopes of this latest franchise on her athletic frame, treading a similar path to that of Jennifer Lawrence when she faced the world as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. Woodley has an appealing vulnerable quality - she is attractive yet not beautiful, with a slightly bemused expression reminiscent of a young Joan Fontaine. You may remember her from Alexander Payne's The Descendents, in which she played George Clooney's daughter - although she has been acting in television shows since the tender age of 9. This adaptation of Veronica Roth's bestselling debut novel Divergent, the first in the trilogy, is sure to attract the attention of the same target market that delighted in The Hunger Games and Twilight. Embracing freedom and risk-taking, Beatrice (or Tris, as she now calls herself) leaps from a speeding train, which takes her from Abnegation (the faction known for selflessness) to the training school for Dauntless (for the fearless), as her new life begins. Maggie Q's tattoo artist Tori, who has determined Tris is a Divergent and therefore does not fit into any of the categories, has warned she must keep the information secret and that Divergents are considered a threat to the authorities. The story begins to take shape as Tris undergoes a gruelling 10 week physical and mental training, her life constantly under threat. Knives are thrown, deadly war games played, and there is a death defying flying fox to conquer. All eyes are on her handsome instructor Number Four (Theo James, from Downton Abbey), who takes a close interest in Tris. The chemistry between Woodley and James is apparent from the outset; James has charisma and a quiet masculine strength that counters Woodley's vulnerabilities. The sequences in which they share the ultimate intimacy, sharing each other's brain function by chemical means, as they are confronted by their worst fears, deliver some of the film's best moments. Kate Winslet is terrific as the villainous, ice-cool blonde whose focus is to shift control from Abnegation to Erudite. The other supporting cast is excellent including Zoë Kravitz (Lenny's daughter) as the feisty Christina and Miles Teller as the sadistic Peter. But the film belongs to Woodley who not only appears in almost every scene, but wins our hearts from the outset by her integrity, determination and her mantra to never give up.

Council fees have risen By Ryan Groube

Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) fees and charges for environmental health, animal management and local laws have risen across the board. On April 16, Council adopted its proposed fees for a series of items including: animal registration, impounding animals, temporary food business applications and recovery of abandoned vehicles. A report said in each case the amount collected was used to “recover” costs to Council. The registration of a cat or dog has risen from $70 to $80 with a pensioner

An unsealed section of the Hann Highway outside Hughenden.

Calls for highway completion ignored

By Boyd Robertson A renewed push for the completion of an inland alternative to the Bruce Highway in the wake of Cyclone Ita is falling on deaf ears. Economic organisations, community groups and local government are increasing their advocacy for a 60-kilometre section of the Kennedy Developmental Road known as the Hann Highway to finally be sealed. The Hann, which stretches 256 kilometres between Hughenden and the Lynd Junction, has the potential to both act as an alternative route when the Bruce Highway floods and also shave 700 kilometres off the journey between Far North Queensland and markets in the south. Advance Cairns chief executive Mark Matthews said the need for finishing the road was obvious. “Pretty much every time we have a severe weather event in Far North Queensland, the Bruce Highway is cut,” he said. “There’s an extremely positive response from most local organisations including us, the Far North Queensland Organisation of Councils, Regional Development Australia and many others for sealing this road so we have a way into the Far North when the Bruce is cut.” Sealing the highway has been an item on Regional Development Fund wish-lists for many years thanks to the efforts of the Hann Highway Action Group but there is still yet to be government commitment to finishing the project, with the Bruce Highway still considered a priority. Visiting the Tablelands after Cyclone Ita, Community Recovery and Resilience Minister David Crisafulli said

an inland route would open up parts of Queensland that “have a lot to offer”. “An inland route isn’t just about making communities more disaster resilient it makes them economically resilient as well,” he said. Mr Crisafulli said an inland route did not negate the need to upgrade the Bruce Highway but that it “would be foolish not to look at an inland route as an option”. The Federal Government has promised to spend $6.7 billion upgrading the Bruce Highway with the State Government chipping in $2 billion. Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said that while upgrading the highway was an option there was no commitment at present. “While no decision has been made we are exploring a number of alternative inland routes to improve access during flood events,” a spokesperson for Mr Emerson said. Member for Kennedy Bob Katter, whose seat takes in the Hann, blasted the Newman Government for announcing the new $5 billion BaT tunnel for Brisbane ahead of developing northern roads. “[The Hann Highway] is vitally important to the Tablelands and the entire Far North Region,” Mr Katter said. “In the north we grow all the crops, raise all the cattle, mine all the coal and iron, and yet the south gets $5 billion from the government so a few thousand Brisbane residents can get home from work a few minutes earlier. “With $120 million we could finish the Highway and take 700 kilometres off the shipping route from the north to the southern cities - it’d take away a third of the transport costs.”

HI folks and welcome to another edition of Ride! I hope that Cyclone Ita didn’t cause you too much grief and I for one was pretty happy that it was downgraded, but unfortunately the wet did cause a swag of event cancellations across the Far North. The Far North Road Racing Club had to cancel their event last weekend as did the Ellis Beach Ol’ Skool Motorcycle Show and the TNQ series that had two rounds scheduled for last weekend also. It is a hard call for clubs and organisers to cancel these events and obviously a safety factor has to be considered to people that travel long distances to either compete or spectate, so you are probably not going to make everyone happy by calling off the event so just remember that when decisions are made, please respect it. Over the last few months I have noticed a sharp increase in the theft of motorcycles both on and off road and figures show that last year alone there were over 8000 motorcycles stolen in Australia and 1500 were stolen in Queensland with Brisbane being the highest in the state (1228), followed by Townsville with 232 bikes stolen. I could not find any stats on stolen bikes for the Cairns region, but looking at Townsville figures one could only guess that it would be high, and only a quarter of these bikes were recovered and 60% were stolen from homes! Six in Ten motorcycles were stolen for profit and a high demand for parts and poor identification contributing to the overall problem. Some of these bikes have been in locked sheds and

in some cases on trailers while the owners slept and in a lot of cases bikes were not insured. Last week a bloke was selling his Harley and a guy came to take it for a test ride and left the owner with some false ID and that was the last he saw of the bike, and again unfortunately it was not insured. So I guess the motto here is lock it or loose it. Don’t make it easy for thieves as there are heaps of ways you can prevent your bike being stolen, you just have to get creative and the local bike shops all sell Kryptonite locks which work well and my choice is strong chain and Padlocks which is then chained to a mega object and even when I transport my bikes they are always chained onto the trailer as well as a padlock from the chains to the towbar just to slow down Mr Lightfingers. T There are some great events that are coming up over the next few weeks too. The Ellis Beach Ol’ School Motorcycle show that got washed out last weekend will now be on Sunday April 27, at the Ellis Beach bar and grill and the Cairns MX club also have round four of their club championships on the same day. Also with the combined effort of the Cairns Motocross Club and the Townsville and District Vintage Motocross Club are holding a Two day practice event on May 3 and 4, at the Cairns track in Edmonton. Camping is available and all proceeds from practice fees and donations will go to the Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life. The following weekend which is Sunday May 11, the Mareeba MX club are holding round three of the club championships and the Wayne Leonard’s Motorcycle Muster ride to Cooktown is on May 17 and 18, so please get along and support these great fundraisers and help make a difference in our community. Until next month, stay safe and enjoy the Ride.

Cheers, Andrew.

Bulls just miss out on FFA fairytale By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba United Football Club (MUFC) has gone down 5-3 against the FNQ Heat in a closely-fought FFA Cup knockout match at Borzi Park on Sunday in front a packed home crowd. Matched against former A-League and MUFC players, the Mareeba Bulls put in a dogged effort especially on the attack but were eventually out matched by the state-level Heat. Mareeba got the first hits in for what would turn out to be an high scoring game, with Elliot Gardner scoring just three minutes after start of play. Bulls player Steven Cater followed up five minutes out from halftime but within seconds the Heat took a goal of their own through Crios O’Hare. Heat player and former Bull Jamie

Carroll got his own shot in with seconds left on the clock before halftime, bringing the score level at 2-2. Tamas Maffey-Stumpe scored from the corner for the Heat 11 minutes into the second half, with Carroll scoring again in the 78th minute. With the seconds ticking way and the Heat ahead by two, the Bulls’ Anthony Mete scored a breathtaking penalty nine minutes out from fulltime to push Mareeba to 3 goals. What could have been a fairytale ending was brutally ended when as a 35-yard shot by Smith stunned Bulls goalkeeper Julian Madrid, the game ending eight minutes later with the Heat up 5-3. MUFC president Alex Srhoj said although the team could not be happy with the loss, the Bulls had put in a ‘fantastic’ effort. “I’m proud of their effort, it was absolutely top shelf, 2-nil up with two goals in five minutes tells its own

story,” he said. “They had some chances we had some chances, they played some football we played some football, we got the upper hand then took our foot off the pedal and let them back in, all in all I’m very proud of the boys. “Of course we’re not happy with the loss but we’ll take it and work from it.” Last year’s state league captain and now MUFC player Alex Plowman spoke to The Express about facing up against old side. Plowman said there was no tender feelings stopping him from playing his best in a much-anticipated game for him. “Once the whistle went there were no friends, they were just another opponent out there,” he said. “We were all looking forward to this game and looking forward to having a crack at them, we knew we could match it with them and it was

just a question of how long, and unfortunately it wasn’t long enough in the end. “We went into the game with nothing to lose and everything to gain they were the opposite, they had nothing really to gain and everything to lose, unfortunately we just couldn’t get across the line in the end.” Jamie Carrol, a former Bull playing for the Heat against Mareeba, was in a mirror scenario to Plowman, and admitted the game could have gone very differently. “I was looking forward to playing at home, didn’t know if I was going to cop any stick or not but I thought I paid enough respect to Mareeba and didn’t go overboard, just did my job and that was it,” Carroll said. “We got caught a couple of times in the first half, we were lucky to get two back in the first half otherwise it would have been a completely different game.”

Heat assistant coach Doug Baird said Mareeba had put up a great fight, also praising the opportunities the FFA competition gave to local-level clubs. “It was more thrilling than we would have liked, obviously Mareeba gave it everything they’ve got and didn’t leave anything in reserve,” he said. “There was good ebb and flow, it must have been great for an impartial observer coming along to see so many goals. “I think FFA is a great concept and a chance for the fairytale story.” Baird also said the resignation of Heat coach Peter Tokesi on April 15 did not impact the side’s performance. “I don’t really think [it had an effect], it was a relatively smooth transition,” he said. “These are football players and it’s all about playing the game for them, they really shouldn’t be concerned with what’s going on in the background.”

Training program for young Bulls The Mareeba United Football club has turned its focus to the next generation of Bulls, with the kick off of the club’s “Squirts” program which offers opportunities for children from 3 year old to 5 year old to participate in the world game. The club is making sure the program is a success with club premier mens coach Alex Srhoj taking the reins of the new program and believes the benefits of the program go far beyond football skills and development.

“It’s a great program, more than anything, it gets kids active, it gets kids communicating and participating with others and most of all have fun while doing it,” Srhoj said. The program recommences tomorrow afternoon from 5.15pm and Srhoj invites more to come along and excited with new partner to program Subway coming on board, “Subway is the major partner of the program and kids receive a ball, shirt and water bottle for the program which only

costs $50 for the nine week course” Srhoj stated. The program has been a success already, with the first few session witnessing young three year olds develop to almost running the show according to Srhoj, “At the beginning all the kids were shy and found it hard to interact, but after three to four sessions the kids are telling me what to do!” Srhoj Laughed. Sessions start at MUFC Thursday afternoon and costs $50 to register for the term.

Callan hits gym for Bathurst race meet A young Cairns driver who cut his teeth on Mareeba’s MakoTrac has clocked in a solid start to the 2014 Australian Swift Racing Series season at Bathurst Motor Festivalover the weekend. Callan Sayers (pictured), 20, placed 3rd in all three of his races at Round 1 of the Swift Series after months of driving practice and cardio fitness. Callan took to the tarmac in his race-modified Suzuki Swift for two 30-minute races against 47 other cars on April 19 and a 1-hour endurance slog on Sunday. He explained the need to train his muscles and not just his driving skills to the Express. “It actually takes a lot of core strength and forearm strength to brace yourself and hold onto the wheel because sometimes you’re reaching speeds of 210 kilometres an hour, doing corners,” he said. “I think it’s a really good start so far, there’s nine rounds to go and we’re in it for the long haul. “I’m just going to try and be consistent and keep racking up all the points I can.” Callan Sayers Motorsport Team supports the Amy Gillett Foundation – ‘A Metre Matters’ road safety campaign.
