he former Mareeba TAFE agricultural college site at Tinaroo Creek Road has sold at auction for $1.315 million. The Ebersbachs, a family of German immigrants based at Chewko Road, outbid Mareeba farmer Jose Caamano at the auction, which was held at the Mareeba RSL. The Ebersbachs say they intend to use the 50.7-hectare property for agri-tourism, farming, accommodation and conferencing, and will start developing their purchase “immediately.” Family matriarch Karin Ebersbach said the price had been well within comfortable limits. “We are very satisfied with the final price,” she told The Express. “We were not forced up during the auction, we knew exactly what our limits were. “We will be using the site for tourism and farming, as well as

making it available for hire for people to use for conferences – and of course we will be renovating the site and making it look nice.” Buying the site also means the Ebersbachs can revive plans for an equestrian agri-tourism project stalled by a Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) in February. The family had tried to set up tourist accommodation near the Steggles chicken farm, which they established in 1993 and sold in 2011, but were denied by the TRC, who were worried over possible complaints about the farm’s odour. Mareeba Property Office principal John Falvo said although the property had sold for a higher than expected price, the Ebersbachs had still picked up a good deal, pointing to the ‘ripple effect’ predicted from the construction of the Aquis megaresort in Yorkeys Knob. “The Tablelands are a wellknown location in Far North Queensland, we have an ideal cont. Glorious weather added to fun both on land and in the water at the Kuranda Festival over the weekend. River bashes, bike shows, cheerleading displays and a host of other entertaining features rounded out the community event, which marked the 125th anniversary of Kuranda’s official surveying and drew thousands to the town over the course of the weekend. The festival’s signature event, the Bash of the Barron water race, was a particular success, with 64 people registering to paddle eight white-water rafts

we are expecting a bigger turnout later on,” he said. “We always get a great variety at the bike show – right now we’ve got not just Harleys but Triumphs, Hudsons and all sorts of European bikes.” Mr Neal also pointed to an increased police presence at the bike show coinciding with the Newman Government’s crackdown on bikie gangs. The national champion Kuranda Stars youth cheerleading squad also performed in front of Saviour’s Church. It wasn’t just tourists that delighted in the Festival – Kuranda’s businesses also had reasons to smile, with a flood of potential customers pouring into town over
Two of the Tableland’s highestperforming young athletes have been lent a helping hand by the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC). Kirsten Wadley, 12, and Shannon Petre, 10, were each awarded a $750 sports bursary by council at its October 17 meeting. Kirsten is a world-class sailor, winning her category at the World Championships in Ancona, Italy in August, while Shannon is a champion BMX track racer, attending the World Championships of that sport in Auckland in July. The bursaries will mainly go toward travel costs for the girls as they attend future faraway competitions.
Kirsten, said she felt “very grateful” to pick up the bursary and was looking forward to a future in sailing. Mum Annette described her as being able to pilot a sailboat blindfolded, which Kirsten described as only half true. “Some parts of sailing I kind of just naturally know,” she said. “Other things I still have to think about, like if there’s heavy winds you have to pull your out-haul so the sail becomes flatter and pull the boom down so you don’t tip over.” Shannon reckoned the bursary was “cool” and detailed her love of competitive BMX racing to the Express. “I love doing big jumps, going fast and coming first,” she said.

the weekend. Luc Bussard, the self-described ‘crazy Frenchman’ owner of The Coffee Kitchen in Kuranda’s village centre, said the Festival could be relied upon as a boost to business. “Every year we love to see it,” he said. “It increases people coming into Kuranda, it is a great time and we hope there are more events like it during the year. “You cannot get complacent, through – we have been here for seven years and every year you must update and change your business or you will not get the rewards.”

One of the other well-known features of the festival is the annual bike show, which draws a wide variety of motorcycles from as far away as Townsville. Organiser Carl Neal said on October 19 that although the show had started out slow with around 150 bikes entered, he hoped those numbers would pick up and approach the record of around 900 the next day. “It has been a bit quiet here at first but

Steven Ames, has been very vocal about the exceptional number of responses received, and noted the ‘direct touches’ with so many people had been exceptional.” Member for Cook David Kempton, who along with Mapoon chief executive Leon Yateman and Rio Tinto Alcan’s Weipa operations manager Gareth Manderson formed the delegation from Cook, defended the process. David Kempton, Member for Cook, said the feedback he had received surrounding the Qld Plan had been “extremely positive.” “The time and effort that went into the consultation process was second to none,” he said. “The State engaged thousands of Queenslanders from multiple demographics, it was absolutely all inclusive.” The plan will help guide government spending priorities for the next 30-years.

A 30-year vision for the State has been slammed as a missed opportunity by Mareeba’s The Queensland Plan delegate. The State Government are trumpeting that more than 78,000 submissions had been received during the consultation stage for the plan – a figure contradicted by their own consultants report. The report said it had received 15,007 individual responses, 2928 as a result of MP led community events and 582 responses from organisations and groups. The jump from 18,517 responses to 78,251 is justified in the report by the groups “representing approximately 60,316 individuals”. Emily Vohland, a 20-year-old social work student from Mareeba, was one of four delegates from Cook who attended the final summit in Brisbane on October 9 and 10. Ms Vohland said the inflated figures proved that the plan had not sufficiently engaged the community and said the process had been “eye opening”. “It is definitely not the bottom up plan it was supposed to be. Consultation came from the top down and it was very guided,” she said.“We had no community input up here [Mareeba] and the Facebook page only got 700 likes – that was about the same number of people we had at the conference.” The Express asked the Premiers Office if it was acceptable to suggest that the submissions of 582 groups of organisations – almost half of which were private enterprise – accurately reflected the aspirations of Queenslanders. A government spokesperson said: “78,251 Queenslanders added their voice to The Queensland Plan following a comprehensive grassroots community engagement program.” “This included 582 group responses representing 60,316 individuals. These groups ranged through all sectors from not-for-profit, to clubs and associations, private businesses, government organisations and peak bodies. “This is an overwhelming and unprecedented response, particularly as it was voluntary to take part. to give them custody of the site on a peppercorn lease but were unsuccessful. A last-minute plea to the TRC to delay the sale also failed. Mareeba Training College Steering Committee chairman Rob Ryan was unavailable for comment. The sale was run by Mossmanbased auctioneer Des Edmonds, who was impressed by the energy of the auction, which opened slowly with a $600,000 bid but climbed quickly as the Ebersbachs and Mr Caamano began to test each other’s limits. “It’s always very satisfying when it sells under the hammer,” Mr Edmonds said.

sadness over soccer move It was very sad for me to see that Mareeba’s junior soccer teams will be playing in Cairns next year. I don’t understand how you can take a game that belongs to the community away. For 40 years I have been involved in soccer, including 12 years as the chair of soccer far north. A junior soccer competition has been running in Mareeba since the mid-1970s, starting at the Mareeba International Club before moving to Borzi Park in the early 1980s. Junior soccer has been a part of this town for more than 40 years, why destroy that now? I don’t blame anyone at the Mareeba United Football Club for the decision, I am sure they feel like they have made the right decision. It is disappointing however that Mareeba couldn’t talk the issues with the Tablelands competition out with the other clubs. I believe we could have reestablished junior soccer as good as it was.
The problem with sending teams down to Cairns is that the Cairns competition won’t give Mareeba anything back. If individuals want to play in Cairns because they believe the standard is better than that is fine, you can’t stop them. Mareeba has always been the backbone of junior soccer on the Tableland. We don’t want to end up with a situation where we have just Atherton and two little clubs at Malanda and Dimbulah. I hope it is not too late to change this. Mareeba juniors club should stay in Mareeba. Alf Moroconi Mareeba Editors note: The Express assisted Mr Moroconi in drafting the above letter.

2007/08 to exercise their democratic right to be heard. The amalgamations generally took away community power by centralising all decision making in the big centres with consequent reduction of services and involvement outside that centre. We believe that Government should re-empower communities without adding to community costs. We want the Government to facilitate a referendum to enable communities to have their say on the means that should be adopted to recognise Local authority based on a community of interest which reflects commonly held beliefs about identity, local amenity and service. It is most important to note that the wording asks that communities be allowed a choice of boundary change, a return to their natural boundaries, or to adopt other means to try to make the current arrangements work. There is an E-Petition No 211213 which closes on October 25. This petition is additional to any local petitions run by groups who submitted demerger proposals last year and has to be heard before chang-
es to the State local government act in November 2013. Robert Johnson Stanthorpe

New map to help in event of a flood By Boyd Robertson The State Government has finally made moves to address the glaring inaccuracies of its flood-risk maps for the Tableland area. A new interactive online map called Floodcheck, available on the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) website, contains flood simulations for many of the State’s towns, including Mareeba and Kuranda. These simulations, created with LiDAR laser-mapping techniques, are much more accurate than the basic floodplain assessments contained in the Queensland Globe program released by the government in April, which showed Mareeba to be nearly entirely covered in flood plain. The Express ran an exclusive story (“State data ‘dam-
ages’ property market”, April 10) about Queensland Globe, detailing the concern of community business leaders over the effect the data could have on local property prices and insurance premiums. On October 16 the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Andrew Cripps, issued a statement saying the State Government would open its digital mapping archives to the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) to help insurers make better-informed decisions in Queensland. The department was keen to point out to The Express that their latest data was superior to that contained in Queensland Globe. “The new information provided to the ICA includes more recent, detailed flood studies completed by the QRA for many towns in Queensland, including Mareeba,” a spokesperson for the Department of Natural Resources

By Ryan Groube More than a month after the Mareeba Gladiators stormed to the Reserve Grade Cairns and District Rugby League (CRDL) title a supporters sign on the outskirts of town finally outstayed its welcome. Since midway through the CDRL finals series, east bound motorists would see the colourful sign, which read simply ‘Good Luck Gators’ at the intersection of the Kennedy Highway and Hastie Road. Further along the Kennedy Highway, a second identical sign near Malone Road had also been put up, but conditions must have been more severe on the outskirts because it had collapsed. On October 17, Transport and Main Roads officers removed the signs as part of a inspection of the Tableland. A spokesperson from TMR said: “We carry out regular inspections of the statecontrolled road network in Far North Queensland. “During these routine inspections, Transport and Main Roads (TMR) officers have authority to remove any non-compliant signage or direct the owner to cease or
alter the advertising.” “TMR compliance officers will remove signs within the boundaries of the statecontrolled road for several reasons including safety and interference with traffic, pedestrian and cyclist movements.” Both the senior and junior Mareeba Gladiators presidents had “no idea” who had put the sign up. The Express eventually found the owner of both signs was Mareeba’s Pauline Moorcroft after a brief Facebook search. Given an opportunity to retrieve the sign before TMR inspectors took it, Mrs Moorcroft said they should “bin it – I’ll make new ones next year”. TMR Far North Queensland Region does not permit commercial or business advertising within the state-controlled road reserve. Only signs that comply with section 5(n) and section 6 of the Ancillary Works and Encroachments Notice (No. 1) 2009 are permitted without a specific permit. All others require a permit. Penalties can be imposed for repeat offenders. In addition, if signs are removed, the owner is required to pay a collection fee (currently $20 per sign).

Truck driver fights for his life By Boyd Robertson The driver of a the semi-trailer that plunged over the edge of the Jump-Up embankment near Walkamin on October 11 is still fighting for his life in a Brisbane hospital after narrowly surviving the crash. Glen Condon, 35, from Gympie, was transferred from Cairns Hospital to the Intensive Care Unit of Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical but stable condition on October 14. He was rescued from the crushed cab of the semi-trailer truck by emergency services after a gruelling two-and-a-half hour operation, but was severely injured. Although nether Cairns or Brisbane Royal Hospitals could give exact details on his injuries, his father Robert Condon said that
Glen was “fighting for his life.” “He’s got a couple of crushed ribs, a collapsed lung, acid and diesel burns all over his skin, his liver and kidneys are damaged so he’s on dialysis,” Mr Condon said on October 17. “He was in surgery yesterday and he will be going in again tomorrow. This bloke gives so much to everyone around him, he helps everyone he meets and he’ll give you the shirt off his back.” Police in Cairns and Brisbane are still investigating the cause of the accident, as well as exactly when it occurred. Mareeba police were informed of the crash at about 5:50am on October 11 and arrived to find the truck’s engine already cold. Glen Condon has not yet been able to speak since the accident.

Council’s priorities questioned over lights By Boyd Robertson A group of Atherton residents desperate for better street lighting have had their calls answered by the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) but some councillors are still dark over council’s priorities. Constant lobbying by a group of residents in Tower Avenue in Atherton has resulted in the TRC bumping up their request for extra lights on their otherwise gloomy street. At its October 17 general meeting council voted to install five mercury vapour lamps on poles around the area, including two for Tower Avenue and one for the entrance to the Atherton Community Kindergarten, at a cost of $15,000.
Brian Cox and Lisa Blanch, two of the organisers of the group, said more light would alleviate fears over theft in the street. “We’ve had young lads roaming around at night and knocking stuff off,” said Mr Cox. “The street is nearly completely dark at night and we’re hoping more street lights will deter the behaviour.” Several councillors objected to the Atherton lights being delivered ahead of other street lighting projects elsewhere on the Tableland ranked higher on council’s Priority Planning Tool (PPT). TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said that council’s decision in the matter was final. A study noted that increasing lighting in suburbs did not affect crime rates.

Sports stars honoured By Boyd Robertson Mareeba State High School (MSHS) has honoured its highest-achieving sportspeople at its annual sports presentation night at the Mareeba International Club on October 18. Year 12 student Baedyn McClelland, 17, was named Senior Sportsperson of the Year while Year 9 student Erin Phillott received the Junior Sportsperson of the Year award. House Leichhardt won the overall house championship for the year. Marathon runner Tegan Parker was named Sports Captain of the Year and was also re-affirmed for her Pierre De Coubertin Award which she picked up earlier in the year. Bradley Smith and Monique Ebner were the first winners of the event’s inaugural Leagues Club award, which recognises students that go above and beyond simple sport participation and contribute training or other assistance. Legendary Australian netball player Vicki Wilson OAM was the guest of honour for the night and delivered an inspiring speech for the 200-strong

crowd. Speaking to the Express, Wilson said that sport was a “combination of fun and hard work” and having big-name stars like her visiting smaller rural schools like MSHS was vital to Australia’s sporting future. “I think it’s one of the most important things that can be done – to be able to share experience, thoughts, even though these kids are at school a lot of them still have great futures ahead of them in sport,” she said. “When I was at school we had Wayne Phillips, who was a famous cricket player at the time and
he spoke about the hard work you have to put in for sport. “Sport really is a combination of fun and hard work, but the fund comes at the end of the hard work.” McClelland said he was “pretty shocked” at his award. “I was up against so many other great guys and girls in this school,” he said. “I really didn’t expect it at all.” Swimmer Phillott said she felt “good” about her award and wished to thank all those who supported here, with special mention for her parents. Although his achievements in track and athletics was what garnered him the award, McClelland’s true passion lies in dancing, and he will be heading to a studio academy in Melbourne next year. MSHS sports teacher Anna Newlands said all the school’s students deserved recognition for their participation in sports. “The students all did exceptionally well in their chosen sports,” she said. “Hopefully they will continue to put that effort in, enjoy themselves and do well in sport next year too.” The event was emceed by MSHS teachers Tim Ralph and Terry McClelland.

Well, there is a changing of the guard with ‘Riding with Acco’. The not so slow Acco is on the move and I’m sure that we all will miss him and his monthly contributions and wish him well on the next ride of life. Well I got big boots to fill, but I’m up for it. My name is Andrew and I have a solid two wheel background thanks to my Late Dad putting me on a Honda 50 minibike around 40 years ago. I was hooked on going as fast as I could so not long after that I was racing a Suzuki RM80b in motocross. I have had the Motorcycle bug ever since and have been very lucky in my racing career to get a fully backed ride on a Honda back in the 80’s and take home a Championship on a 250. My love of motorcycles has never left me over the years, these days I am still involved in Motorcycling, from road riding the awesome Tableland twisties or more recently back on a Motocross bike, and as an official for Motorcycling Queensland. I will be continuing on the Acco format and I will give you guys all the local gossip on what’s happening with motorcycling up here in the far North, from the farm, road or track, product reviews, my views and more. While I was thinking about what I would write in my first article I kept thinking of safety issues that I have been seeing lately of both riders and drivers, and more tragically the fatalities. Yes it is fact that Motorcycling is dangerous and you may

be injured or killed riding a motorcycle, so we don’t need to become complacent when it comes to rider protection. One thing that sends a chill down me is the amount of adults and kids I see riding around the farm on the Quad bike without a helmet on. Over the past few years the tragic toll on life from Quad bike accidents has got the Government doing a study on why this is happening and what measures should be taken – how about education people. Wear a helmet, these things can roll easily and will bite you and I reckon wearing a helmet gives you or your kids half a chance of surviving an accident. When I was a little tacker I got caught riding around the backyard on my minibike without a helmet on by my dad, who gave me a roasting and then impounded my bike for a week – it felt like a year to me, but I got the message loud and clear, No helmet no ride. Something else I have experienced and I am sure all of you road riders out there have had an encounter with diesel fuel on the road at some point. Most times you can see it or smell it and avoid it, and other times you just can’t until your sliding down the road wondering what the hell was that, so next time your filling the truck or ute take a minute to check the rubber seal on the filler cap, you could save some fuel or more importantly a riders life. A few weeks ago a group of local junior riders made the long trek to Horsham, Victoria for the KTM Australian Junior Moto-

cross Titles. In the u15y125cc Wilson Todd and Conner Matthews rode solid in the heats which put them in the final, but Conner sustained a injury in the heats which knocked his pace and Wilson Todd took second place in the final. In the girls division Shanara Salafia finished in the top ten and the rest of the local riders placed well enough in points to help Queensland win the battle of the states. This effort from the local riders just proves the outstanding talent that we have up here in the far north and we need to also need to tip our hats to the Mums and Dads behind these riders who put their lives on hold and get these future champions to these events, an outstanding effort. Cheers, Andrew
Farewell from Acco Hi folks, Well as they say all good things come to an end. Due to the fact that I am selling up and moving, I will no longer be doing the riding with Acco article, however it will be going forward from here just written by someone else. When I stared a couple of years ago I didn’t have a clue but it has been a load of fun and learning as I went along. Hopefully you have all enjoyed my ramblings on all things motorcycling. My thanks to Carl and The Express for giving me the space to be able to do it. A big thank you to all the clubs for your help and best wishes to all and success for the future. If you are ever down around the Burnett keep your eye for the Kat, new roads and trails.
The article will now be written by a bloke called Andrew Porter (see above) a rider of many years – probably a slightly different slant on motorcycling, but that can only be good. He will be covering all aspects of the bike world, so folks any topics you want raised the same applies – contact Andrew through the paper and he will only be too happy to oblige. So once again a big cheerio and thank you all. By the way this Saturday, October 19, is the bike and car show as part of the Kuranda festival, a one day event. I’m told with music and party afterwards at the Billabong, see you there for a good time. Happy riding and party hearty, I’m outa here so long folks, Acco

Protests over fire NOW OPEN! levy
“The Speewah Tavern, which is the heart of our community, is up for an annual bill of $2500 but if it was to catch fire it can take the urbans [Queensland Fire and Rescue Service] in Kuranda between 20 and 45 minutes to respond. “There is no guarantee of service and our rural firies are going to cop it because people will get the idea that we are seeing some of this money – which we aren’t.” Mt Uncle Director Bruce Watkins said the family’s distillery business would struggle to absorb the $37,000 annual levy on top of the fire fighting measures they already have in place. “We have already met all the fire safety requirements for a distillery and we have paid to install and maintain a bore, 50 horse power pump system and a two megalitre dam,” he said. “If we ever got a fire here we’d have it
under control before the firies could put on their pants and slide down the pole. “They [the Government] think ‘still’ equals explosion but that just doesn’t happy anymore because we are so heavily regulated.” Mr Watkins flat out refuses to pay the levy and said he was willing to go to jail over the issue. “I’d gladly go to prison over it. I am semi-retired and only just down the road from it [Lotus Glen],” he said. “I think it is obscene for the State to be putting this kind of imposition on our business and I know that we just can’t cope with that imposition.” In State Parliament last week, Shane Knuth moved a disallowance motion against the Community Safety Legislation Amendment Regulation (No. 1) 2013, Subordinate Legislation No. 110 of 2013.
Shane Knuth and rural firies protest the Fire Levy at the Torimba Festival Street Parade. By Ryan Groube
The general rule of thumb used by firies is that it takes about 15 minutes from when a structure catches fire until it becomes fully engulfed. From January 1, 2014 rural landowners and businesses living more than 15 minutes away from a fire station (Class E) will be slugged with the new Emergency Management and Fire Levy. The State Government levy is an expansion of the Urban Fire Levy, which had previously not been paid by rateable properties in Class E. For metropolitan households the levy will increase by 6.5 per cent or an additional $11.20 a year. Residential landowners in Category E will go from paying nothing to a yearly fee of $90, which will be collected through council rates. Businesses face the prospect of annual fees totalling hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars depending on the type of venture. Passed into law by the State Government on August 6,
the levy is part of a series of measures to try to “counter the effects of falling government revenue, to ensure it has the funds to rebuild after the January 2013 natural disasters and to fund core services.” As its introduction edges nearer, Tableland businesses, fire fighters and politicians have held a series of protests in a bid to overturn the levy. Firies protested as part of the Torimba Festival Street Parade on October 12, a press conference was held at Mt Uncle Distillery – whose owners face an annual bill of more than $37,000 – on October 14 and Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth moved a disallowance motion against the legislation in State Parliament on October 15. First officer of the Speewah Rural Fire Brigade Steve De Prada said the problem with slugging rural residents and businesses was that they did not get anything for their money. Rural firies are concerned that because the levy will be collected through rates councils may decide to discontinue collecting funds for rural brigades. “It is a money grab and these rural residents and businesses are going to be getting nothing out of it,” he said.

Screening at the Cinema this week...
RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS >
There's nine movies screening from today at Mareeba's new Rising Sun Cinema, at Mareeba RSL – which must be an all time record for any cinema ever in the town. There's the brand new CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, starring Tom Hanks in a true story about modern day piracy, and what a story it is with drama, action, great photography and much more . Two other new films on screen this week are PERCY JACKSON – SEA OF MONSTERS, rated PG and a great family fantasy, and the excellent gambling thriller RUNNER RUNNER, with
Walkamin Country Music Festival - Photos by Peter Roy
Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck and Gemma Atherton. For the littlies, SMURFS 2 returns by public demand over the weekend, as does TURBO. If you missed WHITE HOUSE DOWN, RIDDICK or 2 GUNS, you have a couple of chances left to see these top films . On Friday October 25, there is the first charity theme party at the cinema – and what a better way to kick it off than with the iconic classic GREASE. You can dress up in theme if you like. Better book early as there are limited seats left for this event. Phone the Mareeba RSL on 4092 1396.
PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS -
In order to restore their dying safe haven, the son of Poseidon (Logan Lerman) and his friends embark on a quest to the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical Golden Fleece while trying to stop an ancient evil from rising. Review by Louise Keller: The vivid fantasy visuals provide wonderful imagery in this sequel about demi-gods and their quests. Based on a story from Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson's novels, highlights include a shimmering rainbow-coloured unicorn of the sea that swishes through the waves like a dolphin, a bucking, charging, fire-breathing mechanical bull, a tin ship manned by zombies through hazardous seas and a fiery gigantic resurrection of the evil Titan ruler, Kronos. Everything else - character, plot and interaction - rides on the back of the effects - a little like Percy Jackson, the demi-god son of Poseidon, who rides the surf without a surfboard.
RUNNER RUNNER -
When financially struggling but brilliant Princeton college student Richie Furst (Justin Timberlake) is found out to be breaking college rules with his gambling operation, he bets his savings on an online poker game at Midnight Black so he can earn his college fees. But when he goes bust thanks to what appears to be a scam in the Midnight Black system, he figures he should confront the site's well known and wealthy operator, Ivan Block (Ben Affleck) at his lavish Costa Rica headquarters. With help from Block's girlfriend Rebecca (Gemma Arterton), he wangles his way into Block's inner circle and is given a chance to be part of the money making gaming business - but he doesn't realise he's walking into a different game. Review by Louise Keller: Risk taking and assessing the odds are the key components of this taut and highly enjoyable thriller in which dreams rely on a dice toss and the foolhardy can be ravaged by crocodiles - symbolic or literal. Wound up with twists of conscience and fear, it's a great yarn and the screenplay by Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience) is sticky with tempting scenarios, beautiful people and the ultimate, impossible dream that delivers money, lifestyle and love. Well paced by The Lincoln Lawyer director Brad Furman, the combination of Justin Timberlake as the wannabe protagonist desperate for success and Ben Affleck as the gambling king pin with calculated high risk strategy, is a winning one.
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS -
Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is - through director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens - simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips' unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
SMURFS 2 -
The evil wizard Gargamel (voice of Hank Azaria) creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the allpowerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers only a real Smurf can give him what he wants and only a secret spell that Smurfette (voice of Katy Perry) knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world's greatest sorcerer. It's up to Papa (voice of Jonathan Winters), Clumsy (voice of Anton Yelchin), Grouchy (voice of George Lopez) and Vanity (voice of John Oliver) to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and Grace Winslow (Jayma Mays) and rescue her. Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy (voice of Christina Ricci) and Hackus (voice of J. B. Smoove) - or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue
TURBO A freak accident might just help an everyday garden snail (voice of Ryan Reynolds) achieve his biggest dream – winning the Indy 500.

Too risky to grow rice? By Boyd Robertson A Burdekin company is once again trying to promote rice growing on the Tableland but farmers that have dallied with the crop in the past aren’t convinced. Blue Ribbon Rice is based in the town of Brandon near Ayr, where it runs Queensland’s only rice processing plant. Operations manager Steve Rogers was to make a two-day to the trip to the Tableland on October 21 and 22 to find farmers willing to try out a few hectares of long grain rice. Blue Ribbon’s aim is to expand its total growing area in order to spread out risk – to this end Mr Rogers is looking to pick up about 300 hectares of rice paddock. Mr Rogers explained to The Express the potential profits to be reaped by Tableland farmers growing rice. “If you get your practices and your timing right you can be clearing about $2,500 per hectare every harvest easily,” he said. “It’s got a short season – four and half months out of 12, so when the harvest is wrapped up you can switch focus to legumes or another crop. “We’re promoting soil-grown rice watered by overhead sprinklers, the advantage of this is that you can choose to feed and put nitrogen on the crop in very controlled amounts and times, and it’s actually quite water efficient – you can be making between $300 and $250 of profit per megalitre every season.” This isn’t Blue Ribbon’s first venture up to the Tableland, however. Previous attempts by the company to establish a serious rice industry in the region met with failure and left the growers disillusioned with the crop. Tolga-based farmer Ben Poggioli started out with about 32 hectares of rice in 2008 in a bid to diversify his range, and although he experienced initial success, low eventual margins and high

logistics costs soon stifled his enthusiasm for the venture. “When we started out it grew pretty well but there wasn’t enough money in it in the end,” he said. “The equipment was the biggest issue – it just soaked up time and money. “In the first year we had 80 hectares, second year we had 50, third we had 15 and we stopped altogether by the fourth – the cost of growing rice

versus what else you can grow up here just doesn’t really stack up. “I don’t know if [Blue Ribbon] is going to get anyone else up here growing it.” Mr Rogers, however, said that Blue Ribbon had learned its lessons from the previous Tableland adventure. “We had a crop on the Tableland before but it went to the wayside – what happened unfortunate-
ly is they weren’t doing the timing and nitrogen management in the ways that they should. “What we have now is a much better agronomy plan that we are sharing with growers – on top of that we’ve got an improved weed control program. They just have to understand that they have to do certain things at certain times – rice can be a tricky crop but if you get your timing management right you can really see the benefits.”
321 prime and store cattle penned this week Mareeba Combined Agents penned a total of 321 head of Prime and Store cattle for this week’s sale. Numbers offered this week were slightly behind last week’s total. Bullocks suitable for the Local Trade lost a little ground -3 c/ kg,
however there was a much larger offering of Bullocks to pick from this week. Good Cows suitable for the Local Wholesale Trade and Export Slaughter Trade met with stronger competition, on the best offered values increased by +9 c/ kg.
Heavy Bulls to the Export Slaughter market sold to values -2 c/ kg on the previous week. Cattle presented from the dry areas are losing weight and condition quickly and the lower values are being reflected in each weekly report.

Srhoj and Cater take out player of the year awards Katia Spena, Samantha Cater, Wayne Srhoj, Ben Fresta and Adem Latif
The Mareeba United Football Club presentation night at Borzi Park on October 19 celebrated a stellar year for the club with about 170 players, supporters and members turning out to celebrate the season past. The fans did not leave disappointed – the race for the club’s most valuable player went down to the wire with one of the club’s favourite sons Wayne Srhoj taking out the Player Of The Year award, pipping midfield partner Dennis Allen by
three points and Bulls captain Victor Madrid by five points. Madrid led the race after the first six rounds, only for Allen to jump in front by one point after round 12 of the FNQ premier league season, with Srhoj taking the lead with only two rounds remaining. Defender Kane Alderton enjoyed his first season with the Bulls in the premier league, taking out the Most Consistent Award and also the Play-
ers Player award. Madrid was named the club’s Best and Fairest, while defender Shaun Owens took out the Most Improved Award and Robert Pendneza gained the Golden Boot for 2013. Exciting 18-year-old Ben Fresta took out the club’s Rising Star award after breaking onto the premiers side and proving his worth alongside Bulls legends Madrid, Srhoj and Allen. Ladies star Samantha Cater won Ladies Player
of the Year while 15-year-old Katia Spena won the Ladies Rising Star award and 13-year old Adem Latif was named Junior Player of the Year. Antonio Panetta was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame. Club president Alex Srhoj said that while the club was proud of the achievements of 2013, the club is nowhere near satisfied and will be more determined than ever for a bigger and better 2014.
Cycle stage at Tinaroo The second leg of a world-renowned mountain biking race wrapped up on the shores of Lake Tinaroo on October 20. The Crocodile Trophy, the biggest adventure bike ride in the world, challenges 70 riders to cross 940 kilometres of beautiful yet harsh Australian terrain as they complete a long open loop from Smithfield through the Tablelands and up to Cooktown. Stage 2 of the race began at Copperlode Dam and finished at Tinaroo, coinciding with the presentations ceremony of the annual Barra Bash. Many riders crossed the line exhausted
only to be left gawking at the enormous barramundi hauled in by the anglers. Australian rider Mark Frendo finished the 89-kilometre second leg in first place, retaining his lead from the first stage. If he continues his performance for the rest of the course he will be the first Australian in 10 years to win the race. The top prize for the race is a free ticket to next year’s event, saving the winner $2500. Race organiser Gerhard Schonbacher said the 19-year-old race was proceeding very well despite the brutal October heat.

Bandits captain Brenden Paine at the bat during October 20’s game against the new Mission Beach side
Bandits roll Mission Beach The Mareeba Bandits have slid into an easy win over an inexperienced Mission Beach side at Davies Park on October 20. Things went well for the Bandits all the way through the one-day game, winning the toss and heading out to bat first. Mareeba scored four for 236 off 30 overs, with captain Brenden Paine scoring 84 not out. Ben Turner also distinguished himself with 70 runs. When sides switched Mareeba proved to be as dangerous to the novices on the bowl as they were in the bat, with standout Brett Pierce taking four wickets for 45 runs, three of them being caught and bowled. Brett Brewer took two wickets for 15 runs off six overs.
The club’s up-and-comer Kodee Shannon took two wickets for 13 runs, also off six overs. Vice-captain Danny Shaw said that although the new Mission Beach team had been “an unknown quantity” they still had a way to go. “All in all it was a comfortable win for us,” he said. “Mission Beach are very new – I don’t think they even have a grounds yet, and they will have to be focusing on their training. “Brett Peirce was impressive today but Kodee Shannon is really making a name for himself – he’s doing very well and he’s impressing us a lot.” This week the Bandits will take on United from Cairns for a two-day game, also at Kerribee Park.
From PAGE 1 Jon and Jake Newham won’t be complaining about the one that got away, that’s for sure. The Mossman father-son team pulled in several behemoth barramundi at the annual Tinaroo Barra Bash over the weekend, netting themselves the title of Champion Angler and Heaviest Barra Junior Boys while they were at it. Jon’s two conquests weighed 28.5 and 24.55 kilograms, respectively, while Jake, not to be outdone, landed a 24.50-kilo barra that was nearly as big as he was. Jon fought two different battles for each fish. “The big one mostly ran underwater, he only breached once and I was afraid he was going to spool me when he did,” he said. “The smaller one was a bit more feisty, he jumped a lot and kicked around.” Jon hooked the larger fish on soft plastic while kayaking off the head near Tinaburra on the morning of October 19, and finally dragged the beast to him after an epic 15-minute battle. “This is the biggest fish I’ve ever
caught,” he said. Jake also had to pit his endurance and skill against his massive catch. “He jumped and he thrashed around a lot,” he said. “I thought I was going to lose him but I got him in the end. “I was pretty exhausted when I pulled him in.” Jon and Jake have been coming to the Barra Bash for eight years, which this year was marked by inconsistent weather and a lower turnout. Tableland Fish Stocking Society secretary Ann Leighton told The Express that 1499 adults and 300 juniors had turned out for the Bash this year, with many sticking around at presentation time on October 20 for a shot at the randomly-drawn $10,000 winners’ cheque. Everybody but Wonga Beach man Leonn Mulkearns went home disappointed, however. Leonn said he was feeling “pretty awesome” about picking up the cheque. “I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with the money yet,” he said. “The girlfriend will probably be wanting an engagement ring.”
Annual six-a-side comp kicks off
Final trophy meet at Wondecla 2 year old Ashton Alderton gets a taste of six-a-side football on Wednesday night
The Mareeba United football Club’s annual summer six-a-side competition kicked off last on October 9, with a good turnout of high-quality teams making for a massive night of fastpaced football. In a replay of last season’s grand final in the mens A-grade competition, the Road Runners came out 4-1 victors over the Chewko Warriors, and the Intimdiators beat Snatch in what was a repeat of the 2014 Agrade final. MUFC president Alex Srhoj said “with close to 100 female players and 100 male players, the competition is strong in every division for what is normally a fast-paced feast of football action.”
