Emotional reunion
Above: Annunziata with her brothers and sisters in Mareeba. Left: Siblings Annunziata and Giovanni Aloia have reunited after almost 60 years apart. By Carl Portella

n 1955 at the tender age of sixteen, Giovanni Aloia left his post war native Italy in search for a better life in Australia. He worked in the tobacco industry for many years as well as on the construction of the water channels that today feed the Mareeba and Dimbulah agricultural community. Many before him had made the same journey, however it was what he left behind that makes this
story so heartwarming. Last Friday September 19, at 9.30am, arriving on board a Qantas flight from Rome his little sister Annunziata stepped off the plane. A sister he had left behind as a nine-year-old girl with his parents, and was seeing for the first time in 59 years. With a lump in his throat and tears in their eyes they embraced for the very first time, with a tenderness and love that is only shared by a brother and sister. They were finally together again after a lifetime of separation. Giovanni wasn’t even
able to talk to his sister via phone because of his hearing impairment. Annunziata has always wanted to visit her brothers and sisters in Australia but never had the financial opportunity to do so. Giovanni said “I only remember her as a little girl, this is just like a dream for me”. “Today I am filled with a lot of emotion and we just don’t know where to start”. Annunziata lived in Switzerland for a period of time, but has spent most of her later years in
the south of Italy in her family’s home town of Fagnano Castello. She has seen other members of her family namely Raffaele Aloia, Emilia Avolio, Rosina Curcio and Pietro Aloia, who travelled back to the homeland for holidays as recently as last year, but this is her first reunion with her big brother. It has been almost 63 years since all the family has been together and for the next two months during her stay in Australia she will spend every waking moment with them.

versity holidays. While overseas she wants to focus on education and aid programs. She said she was drawn to volunteering in Cambodia after reading information provided in the library. “I’ve heard a lot about it and I’ve seen photos of the kids and they are so adorable – I want to help them,” Monique said. Gifted and Talented Coordinator Christina Ellacott said Monique had consistently been a positive role model throughout her time at Mareeba State High School and the award was a nice capstone to recognise her efforts. “I think she is an extraordinary young woman and I think she should be very proud of her achievements because it’s all Monique – it’s not other people whipping her or pushing her,” she said. “She puts her hand up and gets involved and she cares. She is really sincere about what she does.” When asked about what drives her to keep volunteering, Monique’s answer was simple: “I just love making a difference in my community—seeing them smile makes me smile.”

Monique Ebner plans to help others in Cambodia after receiving the Helen Handbury Leadership Award.
A Mareeba student will take her passion for helping others to Cambodia, after being recognised with the Helen Handbury Leadership Award. Mareeba State High School Year 12 student Monique Ebner received the award for her contributions to school and the community. Only five Helen Handbury Awards are handed out across Australia every year, with the prize including $5,000 towards an international trip to experience community development in another culture. “I found out about it during Physical Education class and I basically screamed and jumped up and down,” Monique said. “It was amazing to win the $5,000, but what is even better is that I get to use that to help others.” After taking a gap year, Monique plans to study a Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Arts at James Cook University. She will use the money to fund her trip to Cambodia during uni-

Mayor Tom Gilmore officially opened the Mareeba State School Art Show.
AN array of dazzling art pieces from colourful drawings to three-dimensional creations were on display at Mareeba State School’s biannual art show. Students had the opportunity to showcase nearly 900 artworks to the public and their families last week. They had been working on their creations during class with some students also submitting work they had completed in their own time to the show. Learning support teacher and art show coordinator Krista Watkins said visitors had commented not only on the range of work on display but about the quality of the pieces.

Vandals targeted the mosque in Mareeba last week.
Be alert for fire season
Mosque vandalised By Katherine Kokkonen
The public is urged to be alert after a fire broke out along the Kennedy Highway. By Katherine Kokkonen FIRE fighters are asking the public to be alert after blazes along the Kennedy Highway showed the bushfire season was well underway. RFSQ Regional Manager Acting Superintendent Tony Hazell said fire fighters had to deal with relatively low humidity and north westerly winds when a fire broke out on Thursday morning along the Kennedy Highway. The fire burnt through 2,000 hectares and did not affect any buildings. Four units were called out to a vegetation fire along the Kennedy Highway at 10am on Thursday morning and stayed until 8.30pm. One unit returned to the fire at 8.15am Friday and, working with landholders, undertook patrols and blackening out. Two units also attended fires at Wright Road that had breached containment lines. Fire fighters arrived at 9.30am on Friday and worked to strengthen containment lines, and protect a shed. Fire fighters undertook blackening out and checked logs that were still burning, while landholders assisted them with heavy machinery. SES crews worked to support the fire fighter operations. Investigations
into the cause of the fire were ongoing. Supt Hazell said fire crews across the Tablelands would be on heightened alert until forecasted isolated showers and heightened humidity improved conditions. He said it was important for fire fighters to work in partnership with landholders. “This is the first of the season, and in the coming six to eight weeks we are asking the community raise their level of alertness because we certainly can’t do it without them,” Supt Hazell said. “We need to work with those landowners because they are an essential part of the solution. If you live in a rural area and if there is a fire on your property, it is your responsibility. You should have in place mechanisms to manage that fire and when it occurs, you have a responsibility to assist fire fighters.” Supt Hazell said when a fire occurs landholders should contact the fire services and if they have resources, such as heavy machinery, they could contribute to managing the fire. He said landholders have vital knowledge, such as the location of tracks and water centres, which could help fire crews when battling blazes.
AN ACT of vandalism has seen Mareeba rally around its Islamic community. On Thursday night, vandals targeted the Mareeba Mosque on Walsh Street, defacing the front of the building with the word “EVIL” in bright yellow paint. Appointed Imam Ben Murat said that the Islamic community has been in Mareeba for more than 80 years and had good rapport with the majority of residents. He said it was a tragedy that some people held those who went to the mosque as accountable for the action of a small global minority. “It’s disappointing, but I think we can see past the motivations of an individual who has some problems in his heart,” he said. “We’ll go on with life and we’ll go on supporting our community and the greater cause of humanity. People can see what is truth and what is falsehood.” Rather than publically condemning the vandal who defaced the mosque, Imam Murat welcomed that person to learn more about his religion. “I invite that person or persons who are behind this to go past what they see in the world and to go back to the
truth of Islam,” he said. “Let’s not let prejudices dictate our behaviour.” Mayor Tom Gilmore was disgusted by the vandalism and believed it was the act of a coward. He said the mosque had been in the community since the mid 1950s and this was the first time it had been defaced. “I’m deeply saddened by this and it may well reflect the views of some people in the community, given the events that have happened both inside and outside of Australia,” he said. “The Islamic community here is highly regarded in terms of both their community and business acumen and they are a highly respected and decent community and I don’t think they deserve that. The person that did it is obviously a coward. Sneaking around and doing things like that is simply unacceptable and un-Australian.” The Mareeba Islamic community has been overwhelmed with the support shown since Friday and would like to invite the local Community to an open day this Saturday, September 27, from 10.30, to say thank you for the support. Everyone is welcome to the mosque which is located on the corner of Walsh and Lloyd Streets, Mareeba.

Cape York is officially ‘Open for Business’ Indigenous entrepreneurs, elders, and land owners will take part in an intensive two-day Cape York “Open for Business” Summit that will produce the first Indigenous-led regional economic development strategy. The Cape York Open for Business Summit has been coordinated by the Cape York Institute and Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation, and supported by Indigenous Business Australia, the federal Government and the Cape York Land Council. On Cape York, 50 per cent is Aboriginal Freehold land; native title covers 47,100 square kms, and another 38,200 square kms is under claim. Cape York Institute CEO Fiona Jose said “Indigenous Cape York is in pursuit of a right to develop on homelands in the same way as non-indigenous people are able”. “The Open for Business Summit is the beginning of an intensive participatory process, involving approximately 100 Traditional Owners, to work out just how we can make that happen.” Industries such as cattle, tourism, mining services, horticulture, forestry, fishing, quarrying and infrastructure development already exist on Cape York. “Indigenous landowners have a right to be part of the real economy, and be able to develop flourishing economic enterprises,” Chairman of Balkanu
CLUB NEWS Our Annual Pink Ribbon Garden Party which was held on August 23, 2014 has been a wonderful success. We thank John and Delsi Delai for their generous donation of allowing the Lionesses to hold this annual event in their beautiful gardens. The weather was absolutely stunning with over 220 people attending this wonderful occasion.

Indigenous leaders look forward to participating in “Open for Business”.
Cape York Development Corporation Richard Aken said. Balkanu has encouraged governments to partner with Traditional Owners to exploit opportunities on their lands. The organisation took a lead role in the establishment of the Hope Vale Banana Farm, Ranger programs, the Mossman Gorge Gateway Project, and Lockhart River Airport Cabins. On the Central Cape the clan of Okolo Elder, cattleman, and former Chairman of the Cape York land Council, Michael Ross, is in the process of getting their land back, and has many ideas ranging from conservation to cattle and forestry. “I’m worried that Traditional Owners are finally getting their land back, but nothing is happening on that land,” he told a pre-Summit meeting of Indigenous business people. “It is time to use it before we lose it,” Mr Ross said. Traditional Owner and business development consultant Tracy Ludwick believed partnership is the key to success. “Tourist buses come through the Cape, and white tour guides take tours on our land and tell our stories,” she said. “Wouldn’t it be ideal for tourism companies to partner with us, for them to bring the people to us and we conduct the tours on our country for them, giving tourists a unique and genuine cultural expe-
rience?” Mayor of Lockhart, Traditional Owner, and businessman Wayne Butcher, agreed with the sentiment. He sees Cape York as a vast landscape of assets. “We have the Great Barrier Reef on our doorstep and the rainforest at our backdoor, but we are not using our unique tourism opportunities,” he said. “You can’t expect people to come off welfare to understand business. We need more focus on capacity building over a much longer term.” When Indigenous people do try and run successful businesses, they face impediments. Ku ku Thaypan Traditional Owner Andrew Yeatman owns a successful civil construction business, McKenna Consulting. At the Summit, he will raise his frustration at his inability to secure government contracts. “We need to be connected with the commercial proponents on our land, but we also need to be given a break when it comes to government contracts,” he said. “We have got so many great young men and women off the welfare pedestal lining up for jobs, and careers, but they are so few and far between on Cape York,” said Ms Jose from the Partnership. “We are steadfast in our resolve to create enterprise and employment. The social dividend will be profound.” The future is bright, the potential immense. It’s time to unlock it.
PLANS for Therwine Street’s development are on track with the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) calling for landscaping quotes. At MSC’s meeting on Wednesday, September 17, council called for quotes for landscape architect services. Subject to ministerial approval, the redevelopment of Therwine Street will be brought forward to next year, rather than a year later. “Now we need the landscape to go with it and to sit within the context of the Kuranda environment and the attraction of a village in the rainforest—it is important that we get that right,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. The Therwine Street redevelopment project is under the Kuranda Infrastructure Program and discussions have been held with the Kuranda Infrastructure Advisory Committee ahead of the commencement of design, public consultation and stakeholder engagement. Strategic concept plans on Therwine Street redevelopment are available on the MSC website. These are initial concept plans and community consultations will be held later in the year.

Division flares at council By Katherine Kokkonen ACCUSATIONS of sneaky and immoral behaviour were thrown around at the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) meeting, last week. Fierce and heated debate showed the rift between councillors has been deepening, with Mayor Rosa Lee Long and councillors Peter Hodge and Geoff Stocker on one side and Crs Marjorie Pagani and Rod Marti on the other. While Cr Shaaron Linwood was absent from the meeting, due to being on leave, her very absence itself became a talking point when it came to Item 6 Notice of Motion—Southern Link Road. At a previous TRC meeting on August 21, council had voted unanimously to defer the Southern Link

would have long-term effects on Atherton. Cr Marti described his bafflement at how over the space of a couple of weeks the item had gained urgency. “I have to find out when I read the council agenda on Friday afternoon that this decision has to be made immediately—absolutely immediately—and I have yet to hear from Cr Hodge a tangible explanation as to why this decision has to be made now,” he said. Cr Hodge responded by clarifying what the procedure was for a councillor to amend a resolution and stressing he had followed that procedure. While Cr Hodge’s Notice of Motion was up for debate, the actual matter of Southern Link Road was not discussed in detail because Item7 Draft Planning Scheme – Submis-

Road issue until their first meeting in October. The deferral would have allowed for all councillors to discuss and vote on the issue. Cr Hodge wrote to CEO Ian Church on September 9 giving notice of his intention to amend this resolution and have the matter “deferred to the second Ordinary Meeting of Council in September”. At TRC’s meeting last week, Cr Marti repeatedly questioned Cr Hodge over why he felt Southern Link Road needed to be addressed immediately and could not be deferred until Cr Linwood’s return in a fortnight. He expressed concern that TRC was meeting with only four councillors and the Mayor to make a decision about an arterial road that
sion – Southern Link Road was classified as confidential. Cr Hodge said the details in the ammended resolution he sent out showed it had nothing to do with Sourthern Link Road. “It is about a piece of town planning that is to be in the draft plan and all I will say at this point in time is that I think it’s in the community’s interest from the response that I have from the residents in Atherton to bring this forward and that is my right,” Cr Hodge said. Cr Marti said while he understood Cr Hodge wanted to discuss the issue in confidentiality, the urgency behind the issue needed to be explained in an open session. He pointed out that previously Cr Hodge had been hap
py to defer the matter until October. Cr Hodge responded that the issue was in the public interest and that he thought it had been going on for too long. “In my view, in my right, if I feel I want to bring it forward I have a right to do so as a councillor and that is the end of it,” he said. Cr Pagani said the way TRC was dealing with the Southern Link Road issue was in keeping with the underhanded way council operated. “This is what has become the very stuff of council—you wait until a councillor leaves, after you promised her through a resolution that she will be a part of this major decision making process, she turns her back and now gets to find out when she comes home she is not going to be a part of this decision making process—that is not transparent, it is not fair and it is not open governance,” Cr Pagani said. “It may be your right, Cr Hodge, but the people of this community deserve to know why they will not have any representation from their local councillor in her division and why it is urgent for this to happen and it cannot wait for two weeks. It is an abuse of process and it is wrong.” Mayor Lee Long clarified with Cr Hodge that the Southern Link Road issue is in his division. Cr Hodge added that the issue concerned a piece of zoning, while other councillors were talking about infrastructure. Cr Marti said Cr Hodge was leaving out the path of the arterial road and, while the issue did concern zoning, the route was a major piece of trunk infrastructure. “My question, Madame Mayor,
is for you: as chair of this meeting, why is it acceptable that we rush this through now?” Cr Marti asked. Mayor Lee Long said the fact was Cr Hodge had asked for it to be brought forward, that he had done the right thing and that he did not have to explain it. The Notice of Motion was carried with the votes of Mayor Lee Long and Crs Hodge and Stocker. Item 7 was discussed in confidential and was passed with the votes of Mayor Lee Long and Crs Hodge and Stocker.

Residents at Marnane Road have demanded answers concerning the need for upgrade their road (Letters 16th September 2014). As the mover of the motion seeking funding for this project I offer the following account: At the Ordinary Meeting of Tablelands Regional Council on 4 September, Item 9 dealt with prioritisation of projects for potential grant funding from the Royalties for Regions program. The original recommendation included three projects ie: Tinaroo Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade, Tinaburra Peninsula upgrade and a Local Disaster Coordination Centre. I put forward a motion, seconded by Cr Hodge that included roads and a drainage project as follows: 1. Tinaroo Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade $2M 2. Tumoulin Trucking Pad construction - $750,000 3. Brooks Road upgrade - $1.8M 4. Jue Sue Road upgrade - $1.8M 5. Peake’s Gully drainage upgrade - $1.5M 6. Beantree Road upgrade - $1.5M After debate, Marnane Road upgrade, at $2M, was added. Council then voted on the resulting motion and this was carried 3-2 with those voting FOR this list being myself, the Mayor Rosa Lee Long and Cr Hodge. Voting against this motion were Councillors Marjorie Pagani and Rod Marti. Perhaps the residents of Marnane Road have misunderstood what took place in Council. The only Councillors who voted FOR a list of projects including the upgrade of Marnane Road were myself and Crs Lee Long and Hodge. Their own Divisional Councillor, Cr Pagani, voted AGAINST this list, as did Cr Marti. A separate item, Item 24, addressed a request from Mr Cescotto, a resident on Marnane Rd, for road works to resolve a dust issue, including an offer of a contribution toward the cost. The accompanying officer’s report indicated that a budget was already in place for design work to upgrade this road. Councillors Lee Long, Hodge, Marti and I voted to agree with the officer’s recommendation to defer a decision on this matter until funding was identified. In my case, this was to ensure any dust control work fitted in with the overall upgrade program. Only Cr Pagani voted against this motion. TRC Councillor Geoff Stocker, Division 3

‘We need more seats!’ By Katherine Kokkonen A MAREEBA resident believes the lack of seating in the town’s main street neglects the needs of the ageing population and discourages tourists. Michel Smith, 65, said it was “ridiculous” that there were so few places to sit in Byrnes Street. He was concerned for the elderly and the difficulty they have when spending time in town. “I want more seats for the elderly and crippled. Why can’t they have a place to sit down?” he asked. “You try walking around on crutches and being short of breath and having nowhere to sit. It is just ridiculous.” Mareeba is known for having an ageing population with the Australian Bureau of Statistics records for 2012 showing that 30.4 per cent of Mareeba’s population was aged 55 years and over. Mr Smith believed Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) was ignoring the needs of the elderly because some local businesses preferred not to have seats on the main street. “I have seen people sitting in gutters. You go to Atherton and there is a seat in front of nearly every second shop,” Mr Smith said. “Have you ever been a tourist and come to a town and there is nowhere to sit? More seats means there are places to sit down and have a talk to one anoth-
er. Now there’s nowhere for them to get together. I just want a few, not 100, just enough to be comfortable.” The idea of increased seating has been floating around town for a while, but there could be negative effects if it comes into place, Mareeba Chamber of Commerce (MCC) President Joe Moro said. The MCC was not opposed to more seating, but said in the past businesses have had issues with loitering. He added that the seating that does exist in the centre park areas were not practical for the elderly to access. “The chamber thinks that the seating is adequate, but there is always room for more seating,” he said. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said the issue of appropriate seating on the main street had been raised on a number of occasions. “We’re talking about this day and age rather than the last one; people now are far more mobile with motorcars,” Mayor Gilmore said. “That is not to say there are not elderly people who walk around and feel that they need to rest. I don’t like the vision of people sitting on the edge of the gutter because they are tired. That concerns me a lot because when people are frail for whatever reason, whether they are young or old, they need to rest and they should be able to.”
Calling for support THE Walkamin Country Music Club is calling for support to ensure the FNQ Country Music Festival keeps providing toe tapping tunes and lively performances. Organisers are hoping to continue the good work of past committees by keeping the event moving forward and providing a venue for great entertainment and an opportunity for performers to showcase their talent in the friendly talent quest environment with substantial cash prizes. The Festival although a successful event last year, has been threatened by the rising cost of artists and their travel and associated expenses, but the club is hoping with the support of great local and corporate sponsors that they can move forward and keep this event growing.
Walkamin Country Music Club President Darryl Chaplain said the event is an excellent way to support the community and to provide opportunities for rising talent. “To stage a large event such as the FNQ Country Music Festival each year the Club needs to attract a substantial crowd and to do this we need to continue to provide a range of top line and diverse talent both national and local,” he said. “We have an excellent venue, a willing small band of workers and other community groups supporting this event and we just need the local businesses and corporate sponsors to assist us to bring even more people to the area.” The FNQ Country Music Festival runs from Oct 10-12, at Kerribee Park Rodeo Grounds. Friday Night the Festival kicks
off with the People’s Choice Open Mic Concert on Main Stage. The festival’s main feature is the Saturday Night Super Show with Kalesti Butler and Paul Wilson and the best of Local Talent. One of the big draw cards to the FNQ Country Music Festival is the scholarship offered each year by the Walkamin Country Music Club for one Junior Competitor to attend the CMAA Junior College of Country Music in Tamworth. Some of the past winners from the Mareeba area include Kate Wilcox, Becci Nethery and Kurt Chaplain. Anyone interested in providing support for the event in any form should contact the Club through Secretary Cassie Blain on 4092 3542 or Club President Darryl Chaplain on 0427 780 505.

An Activity of the Rotary Club of Atherton Sponsored by Tourism and Events Qld
TasTes of The Tablelands Is a sIgnaTure regIonal evenT
Recognition of the Tastes of the Tablelands as a Signature Regional Event is growing with the acceptance into the Australian Tourism Campaign #restaurantaustralia. This campaign puts our region in front of all state tourism bodies and the event is promoted as a destination for domestic tourists. Its great for our region and a sure boost to the recognition of what the Atherton Tablelands offers to the tourist and the food bowl. Its all happening just down the road from you. Carinda Christie, renown singer, will be there to help you wile away the hours enjoying good food in the shade of the gum trees at the deeply historical site of the Chinese Temple in Atherton. Parking is available at the site however we encourage you to use Emerson’s free bus which will be continually picking up people to bring them to the festival. Pick up at the BV Hotel, Atherton High School, the Mobil Servo out past the cemetery, or along Roberts Street. Emersons have supported the festival for many years by running this bus service and it does make getting there so much easier. The Chinese Temple site has just won a Statewide award for the National Heritage restoration of the original well on the site. Tours of the temple are available as part of your entry to Tastes of the Tablelands.
RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS
THE GIVER is the exciting new film on the Rising Sun screen this week. From acclaimed director Philip Noyce and starring Aussie talent Brendan Thwaites, this is a dramatic and entertaining film in the vein of The Hunger Games. It can probably best be described as science fiction as a history lesson about a possible future. Also in the cast are Academy Award winners Meryl Steeep and and Jeff Bridges , as well as singing sensation Taylor Swift. It is based on the award winning children's book by Lois Lowry. There's also plenty more on show throughout

the holidays, with both TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES and PLANES FIRE AND RESCUE on screen in Mareeba as first run releases. Which means you can now see all the top movies in Mareeba at exactly the same time as the rest of Australia.
THE GIVER
In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the "real" world.
PLANES FIRE AND RESCUE
When world-famous air racer Dusty learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial fire fighting. Dusty joins forces with veteran fire and rescue helicopter Blade Ranger and his team, a bunch of all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire, and Dusty learns what it takes to become a true hero. The good news here: “Planes: Fire & Rescue” is a good improvement over “Planes,” which Disney released last year. The story is stronger, there are some wonderful additions to the voice talent and the cinematography is well-utilized.
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O'Neil and her cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder's diabolical plan.

Community Update HELEN HANDBURY LEADERSHIP AWARD With the Principal...
THE Helen Handbury Leadership Award recognises Year 12 students in rural and regional Australia who have shown strong community leadership and initiative. In 2014, the award winners will receive $5,000 towards an international trip to experience community development in another culture. Students are expected to complete their trip during their undergraduate years. It is a very fine achievement for Year 12 Student and Student Council Secretary, Monique Ebner and for Mareeba State High School. “This is just one of the many great opportunities at our school that students shouldn’t be afraid to access“ said Monique.
In 2014 Mareeba State High School is the only school in the region to have achieved the enviable position of having students attend State Finals in all of the three core learning areas - Mathematics, English and Science. This, in balance with providing opportunities to engage students who have difficulties and the expectations that Mareeba State high School students are active in the local community, is only possible through the efforts of staff to offer our students top quality opportunities across many curriculum areas.
INCLUSION PROGRAM MAREEBA State High School offers a program “School with a Difference” (SWAD). Over the past term we have been working with Doug Hastie and Tracey O’Connell from Youth Justice to deliver an Aggression Replacement Training (ART) program. Part of the success of this program is due to the involvement of Tanya Shorey from Northern Outlook. The SWAD students have had the opportunity to consolidate
the skills taught in the program through a low ropes and high ropes course as well as an interactive rock climbing and dark cave activity at Northern Outlook in Redlynch. A big thank you also goes out to Terry McClelland and Jamie Gardiner
We are proud to announce several Presentation Night Awards and Prizes. Application and nomination forms are available from Year Co-ordinators, Main Administration Office and on the school website www. mareebashs.eq.edu.au. Closing Date - 3:30pm, Wednesday 8th October, 2014.

The Energy Art Exhibition is the largest showcase of work by visual art students in the State and will be seen by over 5000 people. It was fantastic to see all of our students and their families there on the night for such an important event. On the night Belinda Grundling and Jessie Lea both received
from Mareeba High for their valuable input in this program by taking the SWAD students canoeing each Thursday where they need to implement valuable skills taught in the ART program such as respect, teamwork and listening.
We are proud to announce Prizes for Year 6/7 students enrolling in Year 7/8 at Mareeba State High School for 2015. Applications for the following prizes are now open: Encouragement Awards from the Peninsula Art Educators Association. going for more than 80 years.” The popular funding scheme was created two years ago by Philmac— a global leader in the design and manufacture of specialist fittings and valves for transferring, controlling and applying water. Mr Nykiel said judging by the extraordinary response in the first two years of the initiative the Philmac Project was meeting a significant need. “It is becoming increasingly difficult for community groups to source money for smaller, local projects and that is who we aim to help,” he said. A total of $30,000 in cash grants and $5000 worth of product is being offered, with organisations able to apply for up to $5000 in cash. Applicants have until December 12 to lodge submissions, however the sooner the application is made the more time they have to generate votes. To qualify for a grant, a project must be located in a regional area, and the work has to be completed within 12 months of the proposed start date. Archers on target By Katherine Kokkonen

Strong start to cricket season THE Mareeba Bandits are off to a cracking start in the cricket far north competition scoring 294 after 60 overs, in the first innings of their opening two day match against Port Douglas on Sunday, at Kerribee Park in Mareeba. Mareeba’s Brendan Payne had a stellar match scoring his first century of the season, with veteran cricketer Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams hitting 53. Cameron McPherson also hit the scoreboard with 35 runs.
Daley Taylor, 10, and Ben Dayes, 10, check out how they went after a round.
Youngsters Rowan Foxwell and Luke Lamborne also had a great match hitting 37 and 18, respectively. “It was a good day, a great start to the season and a repeat of the 2013 grand final,” Bomber said. The match continues this Sunday at 1pm, at Kerribee Park. Port Douglas will come in batting and Mareeba needs to keep up their good form and restrict the visitors to under 294 to claim their first win of the season. Ben and Sue Stallard tally up their points.

Golfers chip in for charity
Mareeba netballers Danae Hastie, Nataliah Lopez, Lexi Ford, Megan Crane, Bella Quintieri and Justine Gatti had the chance to meet and learn skills from former Australian captain Vicki Wilson.
The LM Engineering team, Brian Warburton, Shae-Leigh Isselbacher and Rhys Williams, head back to the clubhouse after their game. By Katherine Kokkonen Ideal conditions greeted 60 golfers who teed off in support of Meals on Wheels, last week. The Meals on Wheels Mareeba Golf Day on Friday attracted 15 teams of four, who took to the course for friendly competition and a laugh. The day raised $2,000 for the charity to purchase a new van. Treasurer John Lambourne was thrilled by the support shown by golfers and the community. “It’s been very amiable and everybody must have been very happy with their game,” Mr Lambourne said. “It’s more of a community gathering to support Meals on Wheels, a lot of these people haven’t yet reached the age where they need us, but it’s good to see friends have a good time.” Vince’s team, consisting of Vince Gullo, Mick Johnson, Peter Johnstone and Lorraine Higgins, were surprised to take out the competition on the day. Captain Vince Gullo joked that there were many honest golfers on the course that day, allowing his team to come away with the win. He did concede that they had a few lucky shots, but as a team they also had to think their way around the course, which a few of them were unfamiliar with. “We didn’t think we did that well,” Mr Gullo confessed.

STEADY nerves and unwavering concentration have Tablelands Archers heading straight for the target. Along with archers from around the state, a quiver of six tablelands archers competed in Archery Queensland’s short range championships and target championships, on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14. The Tablelands Company of Archers held their part of the competition at their range in Mareeba and competed against nearly 70 other archers from Townsville, Hervey Bay and Brisbane. This was the second time the competition had been held and provided archers with the opportunity to compete
while staying at home. “The advantage is that the archers don’t have to spend a lot of money travelling,” Neil Stallard said. “For us to go to Brisbane it is a three day drive plus accommodation, so that is one of the benefits of this competition.” One of the younger archers in the group, Daley Taylor, picked up a bow and arrow only two months ago. The ten-yearold loved the challenge of trying to hit the target. “It was tough when I was just starting,” he said. “I just focus on the target and my form.” Daley’s focus paid off during the competition, when he recorded his best score ever of 55 points. Quite an achievement, considering the highest score he could have gotten was 60 points.
“I think that the team performed extremely well under pressure. When someone needed to step up to the plate, they were there. Lorraine made the difference to the team.” “It wasn’t about coming out here to win, it was about coming out here to support a group that does a lot of good for the community—a marvellous job—and anything that we can do to help them and if we have some fun at the same time it’s a bonus.” Bendigo Bank would like to thank the following business for their generous donations on the day: Cedar Park Resort, Tableland Hardware, Datum Plastering, L&M Engineering and Mike Blunt.

Champ trains rising stars By Katherine Kokkonen YOUNG talented netballers have taken to the court to learn from New Zealand netball coach and former Australian captain Vicki Wilson. Six Mareeba netballers, aged 12 to 14, took part in a three hour special training session earlier this month where they further developed their skills. Mareeba Netball Association Vice President Meredith Ford said it was amazing experience that allowed the girls to develop and aspire. “They took children and coaches during the drills and the coaches also were learning during the session,” she said. “You could see in the kids’ faces that during those three hours they learnt so much.” Three of the Mareeba netballers who attended were part of the Junior Marlins program while the other three had been talent identified and invited to take part in the session. “It isn’t really real until they see someone of her talent come out to regional players that it makes it a reality to them that they can make it in netball,” Ford said. Even younger netballers will soon have the chance to develop skills when the Fun Net program starts in primary schools. Mareeba State School and St Thomas are taking part in Fun Net, which will see students from Prep to Year 3 take to the netball court.

Triathletes have nerves of steel By Katherine Kokkonen MAREEBA triathletes have returned from the Ironman 70.3 Mt Tremblant Champions a little sore but already pumped for their next challenges. Jennifer McCarthy and Kevin Davies recently returned from the gruelling race in Canada, where thousands of athletes tackled a 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike ride and 21.1 km run. While most people would be daunted by event, Mr Davies summed up the experience in one word: “Awesome”. Mr Davies and Mrs McCarthy had been hard at training in the lead-up to the race, with the Mt Tremblant course providing its own unique challenges. The course was hillier than the track they had competed in for the Cairns Ironman and the cooler weather was a challenge when it came to staying hydrated. “When you race, you keep hydrating whether you need it or not because by the time you become thirsty or you start to feel a lack of energy it is too late,” Mr Davies said. “By the time you got to the run you couldn’t take anymore in because it wasn’t hot—well it wasn’t hot for us. You aren’t sweating as much but you are still using the same amount of energy.”
The morning of the race the temperature dropped to eight degrees and the two athletes stayed rugged up right until the last minute when they had to jump straight in for the swim start. Despite the course’s challenges, what will stay with Mr Davies and Mrs McCarthy are the memories of what it was like to be an Australian athlete traversing through the spectacular Canadian environment. While triathlons are races, the sport is known for competitors actually being highly supportive of one another. “When you ran past it was ‘Go Aussie’,” Mr Davies said. “The support and camaraderie was there the whole race,” Mrs Davies added. Mr Davies and Mrs McCarthy would like to thank their sponsors and supporters and said they would not have been able to achieve what they have without them. Now that the two athletes have ticked Mt Tremblant off their list, they aren’t resting on their laurels. Later in the year, Mr Davies and Mrs McCarthy plan to take part in the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival in Port Douglas and the Yungaburra Soldier On Triathlon. They also have their sights set on the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championships on the Sunshine Coast.
Eels thrash storm By Katherine Kokkonen
THE Edmonton storm was more like a drizzle when they came to face-to-face with the mighty Mareeba/Malanda Eels in the C grade final on Sunday. The Eels hard work thoughout the season paid off with a convincing 60–16 win over the Storm in Cairns. Coach/Captain Darren Ball put his team’s victory down to a focus on fitness and ball play. Going into the second half with the score 22–12 in the Eels favour, the team steamrolled over their opposition to score 38 points to the Storm’s four. “We just went out and did what we trained to do,” Ball said. “The moment we kicked off we had them under the pump. Edmonton was lacking in fitness and we just ran them
around the park. It’s unbelievable, I’m speechless and very proud of the boys.” The first try of the match went to Brady Martin with a courageous effort also put in by Cameron Glasty. Ball wanted to thank Mareeba for letting the team play with them and he looked forward to the Eels bringing it home again next year.
Jennifer McCarthy and Kevin Davies competed in the Ironman 70.3 at Mt Tremblant.
