WINDY HILL WIND FARM
IT’S TOO NOISY!

Criticism of the Ravenshoe wind farm continues By Boyd Robertson
A report handed down at the latest Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) meeting would seem to answer complaints from residents about noise made by the Windy Hill wind farm at Ravenshoe, but council has refused to close the issue and is seeking further legal advice. The report, compiled by Noise Mapping Australia (NMA) on behalf of wind farm owners Ratch Corporation, was presented by Ben Hyde, an environmental engineer hired by council to review NMA’s findings, at the July 18 council meeting in Atherton. It responded to a complaint by Ravenshoe resident Colin Walkden, who lives 450m from the wind farm and has told council the noise of the turbines causes him continual sleep deprivation. Mr Walken hopes to have three of the closest turbines to his property shut down at night. NMA measured noise levels at Mr Walkden’s property between mid-February and mid-May this year to obtain the data for the report. According to both the report and Mr Hyde’s review, the noise levels at Mr Walkden’s property did not exceed the levels set by the Herberton Shire Council when they approved the construction on the wind farm in 1999. The wind farm, however, passed only marginally – at times generating noise levels within less than a decibel of the acceptable limit. Council resolved to obtain legal advice on the most appropriate response to the report, which was discussed in the confidential section of the meeting. During the presentation, Mr Hyde was grilled at length by Councillor Marjorie Pagani, an outspoken opponent of the proposed Mt Emerald wind farm, over the contents of his report. Cr Pagani called attention to previous noise monitoring reports given to council which showed that the Windy Hill turbines displayed ‘special auditory characteristics’ (SACs) that effectively increased their noise levels past the acceptable standards. Cr Pagani also pointed to the fact that NMA had measured noise levels during a low-wind period and not measured noise levels inside Mr Walkden’s house. Mr Hyde responded that he had simply followed council’s instructions in reviewing NMA’s data. The Express Newspaper understands that the cost of hiring an environmental consultant is about $30,000.

Rodeo runs in the family By Boyd Robertson Rodeo runs in the blood of the Simpson family, who haven’t let injuries blunt their enthusiasm for the sport. Ted, Jake and Georgia Simpson from Mareeba all competed in the Mareeba Rodeo on July 13-14, with Jake winning the title of Grand Champion Junior Cowboy and Ted winning the Michael Gear Memorial Trophy for Best Protection Clown. Jake, at only seven years old, beat out riders as old as 17 to win the junior barrel race event and then came second in the Under 8s poddy calf ride to secure his title. Ted, 33, was awarded the trophy by the Gear family after risking life and limb to keep riders safe from angry bulls all weekend. Georgia, 8, placed fourth in the junior barrel race. Jake said it was “pretty cool” to win the Junior Grand Champion title. “I said ‘wow’ when I found out,” he said. “When I told my friends they said ‘you’re kidding me. “Riding the calf was hard because he was very strong – I had to hold on very tight.” Jake’s win is all the more remarkable considering his recovery from life-threatening injuries sustained in an accident with a horse when he was four years old in 2010. Jake was left with two holes in his bowel, a liver nearly split in two, a blood clot in his brain and, as his family and doctors suspect, recurring epileptic fits. Despite this, Jake intends to continue riding in rodeos, and has vowed to return to Kerribee Park for next year’s event to defend his title. He also hopes to become a professional rodeo competitor riding both bulls and broncos when he grows up. Ted was honoured to receive the trophy, which is named after legendary local protection clown Michael Gear, who died in an accident while bull-catching about a decade ago. “It feels awesome to receive the trophy for the first time,” he said. “Mick was one of the best protection clowns there was.” “If you got on a bull and you saw he was there, you felt safe and you knew you were going to be OK.” Ted became a protection clown a few years after inju-

He described the activity as riskier than riding, but providing a “massive adrenalin rush,” pitting his agility and quick thinking against the bull’s strength and straight-line speed to distract it from a fallen rider. “With clowning, you don’t want to move until you see the rider start to slip, so you’re still close enough to the bull to distract him when the rider comes all the way off,” he said. “Sometimes you actually have to grab him by the horns and then move out of the way when he comes right at you, because you’ll never out-run a bull – in a straight line he’ll smoke you. “I’ve copped a couple of hits and done a few somersaults and flips but I haven’t been seriously injured doing

She claims to be a better horse rider than Jake, but has avoided poddy riding since being knocked unconscious by a calf in Chillagoe in 2011. Ted’s wife Hannah said she has full confidence in watching Ted take on angry bulls, but still worries when her children enter the ring. “Watching Teddy I feel really safe because I know he knows exactly what he is doing but with the kids it gives me a few extra grey hairs watching them,” she said. “They all love it, though – they sleep, eat and breathe rodeo.”

Welcome move for library
By Boyd Robertson
Kuranda Library will have room to grow after the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) announced plans to move it to a new and more spacious location. At the July 18 council meeting, the TRC voted to approve the relocation of the library to the Kuranda Community precinct, formerly Kuranda State School. The Library’s current site at Thooree Street has a public floor space of 106 square metres, less than half of what the State Library of Queensland Building Standard recommends to serve Kuranda’s population catchment. The new site at the community precinct offers a public space of about 276 square metres. The move will give the library an extra 170 square metres of public floor space, allowing it to offer extra services to the community. The precinct also has 22 car parking spaces set aside for the library’s needs. The library will be the first organisation to move into the Community Precinct, located at Arara Street. Council will need to shift $60,000 to the 2013-14 budget to pay for the move, with an extra $30,000 from the external works budget to be set aside for upgrading the precinct’s air conditioning. No timeline for the move has been concretely established yet but council intends to form a project team to oversee the shift. TRC Kuranda district representative Jenny Jensen said the move was a long time coming and would be very beneficial to the town’s community. “For a long time the Kuranda Library has been stuck in a small space that has been used by a large amount of people she said. “It’s also a council service centre – people can go there to pay rates, get their pet registered and other business they need to do with council. “This move creates a lot of space for other

cludes towns like Speewah and Koah,” she said. “A lot of people are driving in to town, dropping their kids off or visiting the library themselves and I think the extra parking space at the community precinct will actually help that. “It’s more than a library, it’s a community space – people go there to read the paper, have conversation and be part of the community so-
Military projectiles discovered in town A local business was cordoned off by police for three hours on July 16 after military projectiles were discovered. Early on Tuesday morning, Mareeba Metal Merchants staff contacted police after finding heavy-duty ammunition among the scrap. Staff were immediately evacuated as police established a perimeter around the Ray Road business. Police contacted the Australian Defence Force to report the find. “The items were identified as two Armour Piercing projectiles. The munitions were recovered to HMAS Cairns for safe disposal,” a Defence spokesperson said. Mareeba Metal Merchants co-owner Roslyn Goldsmith said the business had well established procedures to deal with the situation. “We have procedures in place to deal with these situations and that situation was cleared successfully,” she said. “First and foremost our focus was on our employees and we managed to get them all out quickly and safely and called the appropriate authorities.” The situation was safely resolved at about 1pm.

cial interaction.” In the July 18 meeting Cr Jensen also moved that council officers review the library’s opening hours with the intention of increasing them. This motion was carried. Currently the Library is only open half-days from Tuesday to Saturday. Council also agreed to seek options for the existing library site.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Reflections on the avenue Now the opening of the Avenue of Honour is behind us and the beautiful avenue and memorial has settled into a degree of peace and tranquillity once again, it is time to reflect on all that happened to bring us to this point. On behalf of the small organising committee, to would like to say a very sincere thank you to all involved. This has been such a community effort and there have been so many people who have contributed to do their bit to make this beautiful memorial possible, so it would be impossible to do an individual thank you. You all know who you are, from the ladies who served morning tea on Anzac Day and the children who organised free dress days at their schools to raise funds, to the people who volunteered their labour to get the Avenue ready for opening day, to pensioners who gave so generously because they felt so deeply that our heroes should be honoured. In fact, there have been so many people who have done so much. So, each and every one of you, we salute you on behalf of our fallen diggers and say ‘what a bunch of legends you are’. The Avenue of Honour has been an amazing journey for all of us who have been involved, but I think we would
all agree that the honour has been truly ours. In the words of Victoria Cross winner Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith, “this memorial is born from love.”. We now have this sacred place to come to reflect on the lives and sacrifice of these fine young men. It will be a place for their mates and for all the fine men and women who serve our nation to come and rest and perhaps get a certain sense of healing. This beautiful memorial was born from the compassion and heart of community and it will continue to be nurtured by community, with a committee now being set up to manage and maintain the Avenue to the standard that such a sacred monument deserves. Cr Shaaron Linwood Express cane coverage bagged I refer to your article of June 12, 2013 (The Express Newspaper, page three) relating to the recent meeting between executives of Mackay Sugar and residents of Mount Molloy / Julatten. A report which your journalist attempted, through the use of such emotive expressions as “radical members of the crowd”, “those with knowledge of the stunt”, “torrents of attacks” and others, to convert from unbiased reporting to editorial comment aimed at distorting the facts and thus directing the interpretation of readers. What your reporter actually ob-

served was the unity of residents of disparate educational, experiential and emotional backgrounds in resisting the destruction of the peaceful environment in which they live. Destruction to be brought about not in the interests of Tablelands cane growers but to improve returns to shareholders - most of whom reside far from the affected area, and some of whom probably could not even find the affected area. Destruction predicated on the view that organisational profits are of superior importance to outcast populations, and that a cost / benefit analysis is one in which the corporation takes the benefits and the residents can wear the costs. As you are doubtless aware, the objection is to the proposed massive increase in truck transport through the two subject populated areas, an increase from which Mareeba residents will also suffer when the majority of these trucks start to travel through the centre of the town in 2014. Mackay Sugar stated at the meeting that the increase would be of the order of ten percent, but the basis of estimation is at best suspect. Some of the key issues for locals are, the safety of road users, noise pollution, health risks and road damage. Some of the issues involved bear much similarity to those referred to by the NSW Appeals Court in relation to the proposed vandalism of the disruption of lifestyles in the Bulga area (a coal company wanting to destroy the peace and serenity of a small population). An approach should be made in a similar manner here, seeking relief from
this heartless disruption to our lives. Something needs to be done before dubious arrangements are made for triples to be used on the same roads (but only while carrying sugar, because the roads can tell the difference) and we finish up in the same boat as the residents of Yarraville (where more children are admitted to hospital with respiratory disease than any other suburb of Melbourne), Footscray or Laverton. James Leonard Mount Molloy Animal Farm, revisited “Old Snowball is Back”! Does anybody remember George Orwell’s allegorical and dystopian novel Animal Farm? Parallel’s can also be made of the Federal Labor Party. Snowball was Napoleon’s rival and original head of the farm after Jones’ overthrow. He was an eloquent speaker, whilst his rival, Napoleon - a large, rather fierce-looking Berkshire boar, not much of a talker, but with a reputation for getting his own way. He kept the ‘attack dogs’. Well, Kevin Rudd displays similar characteristics to Snowball, and he gets deposed for Napoleon. The novel addresses not only the corruption of the revolution by its leaders, but also the ways wickedness, indifference, ignorance, greed, and myopia corrupt the revolution. Just remember, whilst Kevin Rudd may take Labor to the election - there are other would-be PM’s who like to get their way in the wings who may be more favoured by caucus... i.e. Bill
Shorten (who blows in the breeze and changes his support like a weathercock) and Anthony Albanese. Labor has a history of knifing its leaders and replacing them. Just like Forrest Gump said “Life is like a box of chocolates... you never know what you’re going to get”.... same could be said for the ALP. It is the same dog - just a different leg action! Peter Spies Chairman, Atherton Branch, LNP Volunteers thanked I recently had the chance to meet with Cancer Council Queensland volunteers in FNQ to thank them for helping us change the face of cancer in Queensland. It was an honour to connect with supporters all the way from Karumba to Mossman, Port Douglas, Cairns, Atherton, Mareeba, Ingham and Innisfail. I want to recognise each and every inspirational volunteer who puts so much time and passion into supporting CCQ – and with such pride. We have such a strong volunteer base across Queensland and we simply could not do what we do without the spirit and determination of our volunteers. They are the heart of our work! It was terrific to spend time in the Far North! I return home to South East Queensland with a solid list of things we can work on together to further improve cancer control. It’s Ramadan time By Boyd Robertson
The Tableland’s diverse Muslim population are celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan at Mareeba Mosque. During Ramadan – the ninth month on the Islamic calendar – Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. At the end of each day the fast is ended and families meet at the mosque for prayers and a community feast at the Muslim Society Hall. Mareeba Mosque, the only Mosque on the Tableland, is a focal point for the region’s Muslims, who number about 350. They come from a vast array of national, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, including Australian, Albanian, Turkish, Pakistani, Bosnian, French, Indonesian, Uzbek, Congolese and South African. This wide variety of cultures also brings a wide variety of food – rice with turmeric, dolmades, fried zucchini and tomatoes topped with yoghurt share space with more familiar fare like sausages, lasagne and pizza. In accordance with Ramadan’s messages of giving and selflessness, food is offered freely to anyone wishing to join the feast. Muslims believe Ramadan is the month in which Allah revealed the Holy Quran to the prophet Mohammed. It has no pre-determined start date but is begun at the first sighting of the new moon, and ends when the next new moon is seen. Ramadan this year began on July 10 and is expected to end on either August 7 or 8, depending on the sighting of the new moon.
The end of Ramadan is marked by Eid-al-Fitr, a major religious holiday, and is celebrated with an even bigger day-long feast. All Muslims of sound health and mind are expected to begin fasting for Ramadan when they reach puberty. Mareeba Mosque’s Imam, Benjamin Murat, explained that Ramadan was not simply about refraining from eating and drinking. “During Ramadan, Muslims fast with their entire body – not just what is eaten or drunk but what is said, what is seen, what is heard and how they behave,” he said. “This means they would keep away from things that aren’t good – they will not seek arguments and everything they say will be for good and to prevent what is not good from being spoken. “By restraining ourselves from what is normally permissible, we are controlling our desires in the hope that we will do the same in the other months.” Imam Murat said the Tableland Muslim community was ‘gradually growing’ and that Muslims in Australia were fortunate to have the opportunity to worship in peace. Imam Murat is being supported at the mosque by Imam Waseem Jappi from South Africa and Pakistani scholar Qasim Bukhari, a Hafiz (someone who has memorized all 6,000 verses of the Quran). The Mareeba Mosque will be holding an open day on August 31, inviting the community to come and explore Islam for themselves. Noted Australian Islamic scholar Dr Mohammed Abdalla, a former panellist on the ABC’s ‘Q and A’ program, will travel from Brisbane to deliver addresses at the open day.

Funding for rail track received A Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) plan to build a 20km rail trail linking Atherton and Walkamin has received a $140,667 boost from the State Government. The money, along with a $211,000 contribution from the TRC, will be used to complete the first stage of the project, a 6km section between Atherton’s Platypus Park and Tolga. Work on the project can’t begin until Queensland Rail removes existing track along the unused railway corridor. Council has until the end of the 2013-14 financial years to spend the money that has been allocated through the State Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program. The rail trail will feature a minimum 2.5 metre wide gravel track to be used by walkers and cyclists with room for horse riders off to the side. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said she hoped Queensland Rail will be finished removing the track by the end of the year to allow council sufficient time to deliver the first stage. “At the moment we are finalising all our plans until Queensland Rail lifts the line. They have indicated to us that they will do this as soon as possible and my hope is that that will be before the end of the year,” she said. “By the time they pull up the rail we’ll be in a position to get straight into [building] it.” Cr Lee Long said once the project was complete it would be an invaluable tourist attraction for the region as well as providing a safe area for recreation. Mareeba “There are an awful lot of people who walk, cycle Chamber of and ride horses [on the Tableland] and across the Commerce world rail trails are becoming great attractions,” president she said. “It is also a very important project to get, Pietro Girgenti cyclists in particular, off the road given the number has opened of deaths we have seen over the past couple of years” nominations for Originally, the project was due to link Mareeba the 2013 with Atherton but the successful de-amalgamation B Q H E 0 1 1 2 _ ME _ E 1 2 0 1 3 - 0 7 - 1 6 T1 5 : 3 6 : 1 7 + 1 0 : 0 0 Business Awards. vote prohibits the TRC from running the trail into Mareeba Shire Council territory.
Nominations open for awards By Ryan Groube The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has put the call out for locals to nominate outstanding businesses and individuals for the 2013 Business Awards. Chamber president Pietro Girgenti formally opened nominations for the awards at the site of this year’s event, the Mareeba Turf Club on July 18. The awards night will be held under the stars at the turf club on October 26 and is themed On Track for Success. Mr Girgenti said the event, held every second year, was a great opportunity to recognise trailblazers in the business community. “This event is about acknowledging the brilliant businesses that we have operating here, right in front of our eyes,” he said. “It always is a fantastic night and an important night for our local business community.” Awards up for grabs include: business of the year, new business of the year, rural/agricultural business and communitarian of the year. This year will also see the return of the customer service award which is voted for by shoppers as well as a new category for
the best community or sporting group. Mr Girgenti said both the communitarian and community or sporting group recognised the effort business owners put in outside work hours to contribute to the community. “A lot of our business people aren’t your classic nine to five workers. “The amount of community service work they do is something that we thought was important to acknowledge,” he said. “Juggling the challenges of both business and community is extremely challenging but by doing this they help make this community such a good place to live and work.” As part of the judging process, the panel will conduct interviews with all award nominees before coming to their decision. The event was originally scheduled to be held in August but was pushed back to October due to a clash with a major business awards event in Cairns. To nominate your favourite business contact the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce on 4092 6050. Ticket prices for the event are yet to be finalised but are expected to cost $99.

EXCLUSIVE INVESTIGATION
Local businesses scammed again By Ryan Groube
A reincarnation of a notorious scam targeting businesses and not-for-profits has resurfaced on the Tableland. Dubai based business Open Business Directory faxes misleading application forms to businesses in an attempt to sign them up to an online directory for an upfront cost of $1888 and a further $99 a month thereafter after the first year. The scam, Yellow Page Australia, attempts to mislead businesses by making them think that they are dealing with well known Australian business Sensis Yellow Pages. Last week, a local businesswoman, who wished to remain anonymous, received the fraudulent fax and thinking the offer was a special deal from Yellow Pages came within moments of “ticking and flicking” the application form. It was only a misspelt word at the bottom of the form that made her take another look. In a bid to ensure others didn’t fall victim of the scam the businesswoman contacted The Express Newspaper to investigate. A spokesperson from Yellow Pages confirmed that the form is not from Yellow Pages and that investigation. The Office of Fair Trading said making the “the situation is being investigated including lepublic aware of these sorts of scams was the best gal’s involvement as we speak”. club news One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.
What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.
Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.
Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.
Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.
When does it all begin?

The LAND New deal means more trucks on our roads By Ryan Groube The controversial sugar supply deal between Mackay Sugar and Tableland Canegrowers is set to see the number of heavy vehicles travelling through Mareeba spike from 2014. On April 17, 86 of the 89 Tableland sugar cane growers signed an agreement with Mackay Sugar to supply about 700,000 tonnes of cane to the Mossman Mill from 2014 on a rolling five year contract. About 200,000 tonnes of the cane contracted to Mackay Sugar is grown to the south of Mareeba and will need to travel through the town to get to the Mossman Mill. Transporting this cane will see three cane trucks pass through the heart of Mareeba every hour for the duration of the cane crush. Mackay Sugar chief executive Quinton Hildebrand said the cane that would travel through town was only a small portion of what had been contracted. “By and far the majority of the cane will bypass Mareeba,” he said. The majority of the cane is grown to the west of Mareeba and will travel along the Mareeba-Dimbulah road before turning north on the way to the Rex Range. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Pietro Girgenti said it was not his place to comment on the deal between Tableland Canegrowers and Mackay Sugar but had concerns about the increased heavy vehicle movements. In particular, Mr Girgenti is concerned about the safety of commuters on the narrow Granite Creek Bridge at the northern extremity of the town and has called for the State Government to provide funding prior to the agreement going live. “It is vital that State Government spending on road infrastructure keeps pace with the demands being placed on the network,” he said. “There is an obvious safety issue at the Granite Creek Bridge which is quite narrow and can often only accommodate one heavy vehicle at a time.”

OF THE YEAR AWARD
NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN This award will recognise Outstanding Innovation and/or Exceptional Leadership in the Tableland Horticultural Industry
The award will be presented at the annual MDFVGA Dinner on September 13, 2013.
Mr Girgenti said not enough had been done to address a steady increase of heavy vehicles travelling in and around Mareeba and that it was time the State Government put the much talked about Mareeba bypass back on the agenda. The increase in heavy vehicle traffic for Mareeba pales in comparison to the impact the deal will have on the northern Tableland towns of Julatten and Mount Molloy. Both small communities are set to have 40,000 cane trucks pass through during next year’s cane season. Community resentment at the decision came to a head at a fiery consultation meeting between Mackay Sugar and residents at Mount Molloy in April. At the conclusion of that meeting, Mr Hildebrand made a commitment to form a “community

The group will be charged with developing a traffic management plan to reduce the impact of the increased traffic on local residents. Expressions of interest to join the seven-person group will be advertised this week. The group will meet bi-monthly from August 2013 to August 2014. Mackay Sugar has appointed Queensland Corporate Communications Network to assist with the formation and selection process for the group. Mount Molloy and Julatten residents wanting more information about the group can contact Mackay Sugar Communications department on 4953 8339.

Bulls ease past Lions
Ivanhoes pipped by ‘Gators at the death By Boyd Robertson
Bradley Owens in action from the Mareeba Bulls versus Leichhardt Lions game
By Ryan Groube The Mareeba Bulls have set up a mouth-watering showdown with Marlin Coast Rangers after shrugging off a slow start to crush the Leichhardt Lions 4-0 at Borzi Park on Saturday night. The win sets up a season defining clash at Borzi Park this weekend against the top of the table Marlin Coast Rangers with a victory from either side to go a long way to securing the premiership. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj credited a packed football calendar over the past week for the slow start against the Lions but was confident the team would be ready for this weekend’s game. “We have had a pretty big week. We played [last] Saturday night, we played Tuesday night and backing up tonight [Saturday] I thought the boys did pretty well,” he said. “It took us a little while to click into gear but when we

did really the result could have been five or six [to nil]. “Now we come back on Tuesday and prepare for Marlin Coast.” Bradley Owens bagged a double for the Bulls while Robert Pendenza and Dennis Allen also scored. Leichhardt Lions assistant coach Darcy Fernandez said a poor second half cost his side any chance of an upset victory. “Every time we play them [Mareeba] we play well at the start and then we come in at half time thinking we have done really well and we just shut off,” he said. In other results, the Bulls reserves won 3-1. In the second division competition, the Atherton Eagles comfortably accounted for the under strength Forest Garden Wolves, winning 8-2. Lewis Short scored a hat trick for the Eagles while Nat Cuda, Ben Herring, Amos Smith, Jason Curcio and Bodhi Peacey also troubled the scorers. The Eagles take on the Dimbulah Barras on Friday.

The Mareeba Gladiators have cleared a difficult hurdle on their run towards the Cairns and District Rugby League finals after edging Ivanhoes 32-26 at Davies Park on Saturday night. Ivanhoes had snatched an early lead from Mareeba by half time thanks to their excellent work on the flanks and ability to exploit gaps, but Mareeba’s powerful forwards and superior kicking enabled them to regain the lead midway though the second half and seal the game. The Gladiators again showed great determination and heart in working through the heavy-handed action throughout the close-fought match. Captain-coach Rod Jensen was again the team’s leader and powerhouse, scoring two tries through thick defences at the tryline. Big forward Shana Aue also distinguished himself despite previous injuries with a notable straight run up the midfield, rapidly recovering from a knockdown to gain an extra twenty metres or so before scoring 13 minutes into the second half. Other try scorers for the ‘Gators were; Joi Sio and Josh Roos. Kicker Jason Lea also continued his outstanding performance, landing all of his five conversion attempts and also nailing a crucial penalty kick in the dying minutes of the game to push Mareeba’s score from 30 to 32 and clinch the win. Co-coach Todd Rowe said the game was “exciting” and had again demonstrated the Gladiators’ strong will and ability to rebound. “Ivanhoes put us under a lot of pressure leading up to and just after half time, and I think we moved away from a lot of our main advantages, which is sending big blokes up the centre,” he said. “To our credit, like the last three times, the boys dug in and have come back against some really good footy sides. “I’m really happy with the team’s never-say-die attitude.” Ivanhoes were one of the toughest opponents on Mareeba’s run home, making the win an important one for the Gladiators. This weekend they will be travelling to Yarrabah to take on the unpredictable and agile Seahawks before facing off against the lagging Atherton Roosters for the Tableland Derby next weekend at Davies Park. The tough Tully Tigers and trailing Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks also stand between the Gladiators and their coveted top three placing this year. After Saturday’s game, Jensen urged Mareeba footy fans to make the trip to Yarrabah this weekend to cheer on the boys to another victory. In other results, Mareeba’s reserves ran out comfortable 42-10 winners as they continue to charge towards the finals. There was no Under 18s game. Mareeba-Malanda C Grade also enjoyed a comfortable 46-18 win.

Brothers thump Roosters By Ryan Groube
Hockey stars: front, Mary-Rose Turner, April Tahir, Codey Panetta and Liam Davies, back, Mitchell Naylor, Bradley Davies, Kate Wilcox, Lisa Keeling, Maddy Turner, Lani Fitzsimons, Mark Wilcox and Isaac Tahir
Hockey stars By Boyd Robertson A group of young Mareeba hockey players have distinguished themselves at state-level finals over the school holidays, with one player inducted into the Queensland Under 15s hockey team and another making the development squad of that team. The players, while all from Mareeba, play for Cairns Hockey Association teams, and range across three age groups – Under 15 boys, Under 15 girls and Under 13 girls. During the first weeks of the latest school holidays the teams travelled to the Queensland Hockey Championships in Mackay and Brisbane and came back with some impressive results. The Under 15s girls side placed second, while the Under 13 girls placed fourth and the Under 15 boys placed fifth in their respective categories, all facing off against 12 experienced teams from across the state. Mark Wilcox from the Under 15 boys team was selected to play for the Queensland team after the champion-
ships while teammate Isaac Tahir was admitted to the Queensland developmental side. Under 15 girls team manager Yadranka Keeling said she was extremely proud of the effort and achievements of the team. “It’s a huge achievement,” she said. “They’ve done excellently and I’m very proud of them. “They’ve been making four trips down to Cairns a week since we started and their commitment to that training has begun to pay off.” Team supporter and parent of two players Jodie Turner also said the players deserved congratulations, particularly Wilcox. “Mark Wilcox is just so dedicated to hockey, it’s all he does, along with cricket,” she said. “The whole team has done really well. “It’s a big effort that they all put in – they go down training during the week and they play on Friday nights so they do miss out on a lot of social events that a lot of their friends at.”
THE effort was there but a gulf in class consigned the Atherton Roosters to a heavy defeat against Cairns Brothers on Saturday night. Brothers ran out comfortable 50-0 winners in front of a modest crowd at NQ Hardware Stadium Atherton but some last ditch defensive efforts from the Roosters stopped the score line blowing out further. The Roosters had the better of a scrappy opening but couldn’t crack an organised and vocal Brothers defence. After the opening salvos, Brothers worked their way into the game and found miles of space down the Roosters right flank. Brothers ran in five tries to nil in the opening half but if it weren’t for Roosters fullback Leon Abrum, who made a series of try saving tackles, the score line would have been even more lopsided. In the second half, the floodgates opened for Brothers as the Roosters tired and resorted to predictable, one-out football. The Roosters right side centre Jacob Rivett, an Under 18s player who made his debut against Brothers, was the stand out for the home side and looked the most likely in attack. Rivett was also well supported by his winger Greg Gregory, arguably the skinniest player to take a rugby league field, who made some important tackles.
Roosters’ captain-coach Curtis Nehow said every week the team started their games behind their opponents because they weren’t getting enough players to training. “Our training numbers have been really low and we don’t really know what our team is going to be until Thursday,” he said. “It makes it hard to work on any plays and combinations when it [the team] changes every week.” Nehow said the side hadn’t given up hope of securing their first win of the season but the remaining rounds were all about “building for next season and supporting our [Under 18s] who still have a chance of making the finals”. Brothers captain Robbie Swain said he was satisfied with the win and pre-game told his side that they couldn’t take the Roosters lightly. “They had a few sets at our line in both the first and second half and they threw a fair bit at us,” he said. “I told the boys before the match that the same two points were on offer this week as there we last week and we need to keep winning and building for the semis in September.” In other results, the Roosters reserves were on the end of a 100 points to nil flogging while the Under 18s went down 30-22. The Roosters host Mossman/Port Douglas in Atherton on Saturday night before travelling to Mareeba for the local derby against the ‘Gators the following week.
