Generous donation By Justin Fris

A

generous donation from an elderly couple is set to hugely benefit patients at Mareeba Hospital. Les and Anne Mills, who have been fantastic supporters of the facility, met with health department and hospital staff on Monday, February 17, and saw their contribution in real terms. The jewel in the crown of the announcement was the purchase of six new foetal dopplers for

the hospital. Valued at $4328 all up, the dopplers allow hospital staff to continually monitor foetal heartbeats over a sustained period of time. Staff said births at the hospital had increased to around 250 a year, with some ladies travelling from Cooktown to have their babies. North Queensland Health Federation CEO Tony Franz thanked the Mills’ for their donation, which would benefit several families across the Far North.

“Les and Anne have been generous benefactors of the foundation for some years now and it is a pleasure for us to be able to show them the benefits of their donation,” Mr Franz said. Les and Anne also spent time with Mark Robinson, where they were able to view the second long-term investment of their donation. The hospital was also able to purchase a knee continuous passive motion machine, which was valued at $7800. Mr Robinson was optimistic about the addi-

tion of the machine, saying it would greatly assist patients in their recovery from major knee surgery. Patients who are recovering from a major knee reconstruction (for example, a torn anterior cruciate ligament) will find the machine beneficial, along with those who have received a knee or hip replacement. The machine can be used while the patient is

Access to the internet welcome By Justin Fris

INDIGENOUS job seekers in Kuranda will now have greater opportunities to access the internet, after a valued donation from Community Sector Banking (CSB). In conjunction with Bendigo Bank’s Kuranda branch, the Ngoonbi Aboriginal Co-Operative Society received four new tablets, along with upgrades to their original three computers. This will be a massive benefit for the indigenous community in Kuranda, with only 63 per cent of indigenous households having regular internet access in their home across Australia. Ngoonbi Aboriginal Co-Operative Society CEO Lionel Quartermaine said clients would be able to freely access the facilities and conduct job searches within the facility, instead of Centrelink.

Lionel Quartermaine (far right) receives one of the tablets from CSB Business Manager, Nicholas Lintern.

Along with this opportunity, clients will be able to complete online banking, complete school or tertiary homework and stay connected with family and friends. Established in 1975, the Ngoonbi Aboriginal Co-operative society is designed to improve social participation and quality of life for members of the local indigenous community.

Officials from both Community Sector Banking and Bendigo Bank presided over the official handover of the tablets, and further outlined their commitment to assisting both community and the facility. Kuranda (along with the entire FNQ region) is currently rife with overall unemployment, with youth unemployment the ninth highest in Australia.

CHARCOAL skies were the only downside for Mareeba State School’s new school leaders last Monday. Parents and peers alike were treated to a wonderful award ceremony, where nominated students were officially recognised by school staff. From the impressive national anthem opening (with a unique, yet traditional indigenous flavour) onlookers didn’t take their eyes off the stage. The ceremony was chaired by Hannah Simpson (Assistant Principal) and Mandy Whybird (Principal), who both had tremendous rapport with the entire audience. Mareeba State High School was also represented during the festivities, with Ms Teena Seidenkranz presenting the students with their badges.

In her opening address to the cohort, Mrs Whybird spoke about the importance of leaders; and some of the traits which they convey daily. “A good leader makes good choices, leads by example and stands up for others,” she said. “A good leader doesn’t need to be bossy or loud. “We can all be good leaders and set a good example; and we are confident all of our leaders will do their best in the school and outside the gates in the community.” Newly elected captains Ellie Fink and Chase Burns spoke in front of their peers for the first time in 2015 and thanked those who had believed in them. “On behalf of all the 2015 school leaders, I would like to thank everyone for attending today, along with Mrs Seidenkranz for presenting the badges,” Chase said.

Free legal aid for women WOMEN who live within Mareeba’s township can now access free legal advice on the second Wednesday of every month. The service, which is hosted at the Mareeba Information and Support Centre, is designed to minimise some of the legal hurdles women can face in society. NQ Women’s Legal Service Director Anne Lewis said the advice often covered sensitive topics, including domestic violence and relationship breakdowns. “All disputes and anti-discrimination cases matter,” Anne said. “We understand it often takes a lot of courage to come and see a lawyer about your legal problems,

especially ones relating to a relationship breakdown.

“We really encourage people to get legal help as soon as they

can so they understand their legal rights and the different time limits in place. Ms Lewis continued:“When it comes to family law, everyone seems to have an opinion, and we often find women who come to us for help are confused by what they have heard and what the law actually is. “Not having the right legal information can make it all the more difficult to sort matters out about children and property - and then be able to move forward.” If you are interested in making a free appointment please contact the Mareeba Information and Support Centre on 4092 1948.

THE Tablelands Regional Council approved a series of revamped opening and closing times for local libraries (by four votes to one) at last Thursday’s meeting. After the conduction of a six month review of library hours and services, it was recommended that hours at Atherton, Mt Garnet, Herberton and Ravenshoe libraries remained the same. Additional changes of reducing opening hours at both Millaa Millaa and Yungaburra libraries were also passed through with the report. Despite opposition from Cnr Marjorie Pagani and a petition presented to council from representatives of the Yungaburra library, others councillors did not hold their view. The petition contained 508 signatures of individuals who disapproved the 12 month trial reduction of hours that the library would face. Yungaburra’s library will now only open three days a week: Tuesday 10am to 2pm, Friday 2pm to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12 noon. The report found that up to 40 per cent of all borrowed items from Yungaburra library members were actually processed at the Atherton Library.` Events hit a stumble last November, when the library’s officer resigned. The facility has been operated by casual-based employees since the position has been vacated. It was deduced through collated data that the Yungaburra Library is perceived as more of a ‘meeting place’, than a hub for loaning items. Melitta Lewis, who played an instrumental role in the establishment of the petition, said locals need to use the Yungaburra Library regularly, if they wish for it to remain a fundamental part of their community. “Yungaburra is growing in both visitor numbers and library memberships,” she said. “During the rollout of our petition, we got over 500 signatures in just two weeks. “If Yungaburra wants to keep the library running at its optimum, they have to use it.”

Car park expansion proposal for Atherton By Justin Fris

AN initial proposal to add more car bays to the Silo Central Shopping Centre precinct was put forward at last Thursday’s Tablelands Regional Council meeting. Representatives from Tableland Investments (who manage the shopping centre) presented their vision to council, which centred on the construction of 100 additional car parks. The significance of having a ‘real need for an independent retail outlet with functional facilities’ was highlighted to the room, along with a ‘need to evolve’. Silo Central Shopping Centre’s primary tenant is the Supa IGA, which is privately owned by a local independent operator. Across town at the Tablelands Village Shopping Centre (Silo’s major competitor for local market share), the primary tenant is Woolworths; a major corporation. The current set up of Silo Central Shopping Centre’s car park is longitudinal, which can prove a lengthy commute for some disabled and elderly shoppers. “We can’t offer the optimal experience for our customers,” David Scott said. “We’ve received complaints from some older shoppers. “Locals want to buy local, but at the moment we are limited by parking configuration.” The proposal put forward by Tableland Investments to council would ideally see the Atherton Performing Arts

building relocated, making way for the new car parks. Mr Scott stressed that himself and Tableland Investments had ‘support’ for the APA and was ‘not attempting to get rid of them’. “We’d like the APA to relocate into a facility so it can grow,” he said. “Tableland Investments is prepared to put hard dollars on the table to help with their relocation and bring a new facility up to standard.” Council was informed that if approved down the line, the company would oversee the demolition of the site and construction of the new car park. Atherton Performing Arts President Jacqui Stephens said that Tableland Investments had spoken with the APA in 2011 about a potential relocation, but talks had not resurfaced between both parties since then. “We (the APA) are extremely happy where we are,” she said. “We are in an excellent location and lots of people wish to hire our facility. “We add a vital dimension to the local area and location through a variety of different theatre programs.” TRC Councillor Peter Hodge said: “As a divisional councillor, I can appreciate both sides of view. “I believe the theatre fits in with the character of the current local precinct and I won’t support relocation at any cost to the APA. “If the APA eventually wants to relocate or move at their own will; I will support it.”

OUT Dimbulah way, there a dedicated group of local men who are committed to help grow the community in more ways than one. After approval at last Wednesday’s Mareeba Shire Council meeting, members of the Dimbulah Men’s Shed will be able to facilitate a new community garden alongside their current facility. Dimbulah Men’s Shed President Dean Thomas said members were delighted with the decision, with Cnr Nipper Brown visiting later in the week to confirm the result. Mr Thomas said he was keen for the garden to adopt an ‘allotment’ style, similar to certain towns in the UK. “This way, everybody has their own personal little

plot of land within the garden,” he said. “For example, If you are growing tomatoes and you don’t want them to have full sun, you are more than welcome to put a shade cloth over your section in the garden. “We will also have a horticulture instructor on site, who will be able to facilitate a horticulture course for anyone who is interested.” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore and fellow councillors attended the first Men’s Shed meeting of the year in Dimbulah, and from all reports appeared impressed with its operation. Mr Thomas said that several exciting developments were in the frame of vision, with an official opening planned for later on in the year.

Parents educated on bullies A new workshop is being designed to give parents greater insight into their children’s online presence. For parents of students at Mareeba State High School recently, the realities of school bullying were also presented. Stymie, who coordinated the workshop, have created a new application to help reduce bullying in schools across Australia. It allows bystanders who witness someone being bullied, to anonymously report details of the incident, which is relayed directly to the school.Due to the confidential nature of the app, bystanders who report the bulling have no reason to feel threatened, as they will not be identified. Parents were also told about certain ‘do’s’

and ‘don’ts’ in terms of their child’s access to a smartphone or technology device. Stymie Director Rachel Downie said she had spoken with several parents across the country, who felt they had ‘lost control’ over their child’s love for online technology. “It is irresponsible to give your child unsupervised access to a device that allows them free and open access to the world and all of its dark and uninhibited places, without appropriate levels of control,” she said. “Just recently, I learned that many parents didn’t know that their kids are accessing the internet on their Xboxes and PlayStations. “All too often, I am having conversations with parents, who feel as though they have ‘lost control’ over their children’s level of en-

gagement with technology. This is a concern, because losing control means that you are giving away a level of protection. “80 per cent of what most Australian children do online is hidden from their parents and carers.” Ms Downie said there were several measures that could be used to help parents ensure their children could be free from bullying. Some of these methods included having a centralised location for all computers in the house, along with you minding your child’s phone at bedtime. Ms Downie added that it would be beneficial to know some their child’s friends on social media, as they could oversee what type of material is shared on social media.

Mareeba shoppers make a difference By Justin Fris

(L-R) Katrina Welleridge, Angela Gibbs, Todd Riches (Mareeba Coles Store Manager), Sharon Austin, Lisa Holt, Jennifer Batcheler and Carmel Masterson all played a big role in fundraising.

LOCAL Mareeba shoppers have generously donated $1000 toward the construction of a new children’s hospice in Brisbane. Coles Mareeba easily raised more money than any other store in North Queensland; and it only took two weeks. The facility will aim to be a ‘home away from home’ for sick children, along with the opportunity to access vital surgical care. Queenslanders have generously dipped into their pockets in February, with $129,000 already raised for the project. Coles Queensland State General Manager Paul Bradshaw said he was thankful to all who had donated toward the Humming-

bird house. “This hospice provides children and their families with another option for respite and palliative care that isn’t in a clinical setting. “Our customers have shown their compassion and generosity by supporting this vital service, which will make a real difference to so many,” he said. Mareeba Coles Store Manager Todd Riches wanted to especially thank all of the Mareeba community who did their bit to raise such a wonderful total. “It’s very humbling to raise this money for such a worthy organisation,” he said. “I would like to thank the community for their support; and the team for their hard work in all fundraising.”

Bat conservationist recognised in awards ATHERTON-based Jenny Maclean has been awarded the 2015 Heritage Bank Volunteer of the Year for her dedication toward bat conservation. In light of her success, Ms Maclean received a cash prize of $1000, with the Tolga Bat Hospital (which she operates) also receiving $10,000. Humbled by her recognition, Ms Maclean was quick to thank everyone who had considered her through nomination. “I’d like to say thank you to Heritage and everyone who voted,” she said. “The support we’ve received from the public has been tremendous. Winning this award means a lot to me personally, though of course anything I’ve been able to achieve has relied on a vast network of other volunteers.” Ms Maclean has been involved in environmental conservation since 1990 and has been committed to working with bats. “I started working with bats in 1990, and helped form a not-for-profit community group Tolga Bat Hospital in 2002 to be able to further this work,” she said. “Since then, Tolga Bat Hospital continued to attract great support and we also have a Visitor Centre open to the community to assist with public education and dispel any misconceptions surrounding bats. “Bats are often unfairly maligned but they are vital for our environment. Fruit bats provide pollination and seed dispersal services essential to the health of many different types of forest. And the microbats, by eating insects, contribute to crop protection as well as people’s comfort and health.” Heritage Bank CEO John Minz congratulated Ms Maclean on her win and said there were several quality nominations for the judging panel to adjudicate on. “This year, we had wonderful response from the public with over 115 deserving volunteers nominated,” Mr Minz said. “We were really pleased with both the number and diversity of groups represented, which is testimony to the great value that volunteers add to the community. “My thanks and congratulations go to Jenny and each of the volunteers nominated.”

POLITICS WITH SHANE KNUTH

ELECTION OUTCOMES I believe that the political landscape in Queensland has changed forever. Three years ago the Queensland Labor party was thrown out of office with the greatest swing against a party in Australian political history. Consequently, the LNP formed government with the greatest margin in political history. Last month, the LNP lost government and Labor won an unwinnable election with the support of independent, Peter Wellington. Queenslanders spoke loudly and clearly that they will no longer tolerate governments who look after themselves to the detriment of their constituents, and who refuse to govern for all Queenslanders. Robbie Katter and I negotiated with both major parties for many days and nights, presenting our case for rural Queensland, neglected by both parties for far too long. For the first time, politicians in the south-east corner were able to see that Queensland exists far beyond their southern electorates and rural Queenslanders were demanding a fair go. Our policies were largely well received by both parties but, in the end, we chose not to support either. KAP is an independent party and will work with the new government when legislation is beneficial to regional and rural areas but will not rubber stamp

anything that hurts or disadvantages rural Queensland. In the meantime, I will be working with our communities and the new state government in having a minister or government representative visit our electorate to hear concerns, first hand, when circumstances warrant. The numbers in Parliament are so tight that even a sneeze could bring down the government. We are in new political territory and have an opportunity to cause things to happen that have previously been rejected through petty party payback styles of governments. Those days are over. The 28 policy points we presented to both parties can be obtained from our electorate office.

Council rental increases With the recent rental increases, the Council is making a profit of approximately $2,000.00 at local pensioners’ expense. The rental increase occurred about halfway through a pay period, however the council has taken the increase for the full pay period. According to my calculations, this works out to be a difference of approximately $20.00 for each pensioner. Considering there are about 100 units, this comes to about $2000.00 not allowing for couples. Council’s general response is: “You will get a refund when you leave.” However, the minority of these pensioners reside in these units until they either pass away or go to aged care facilities. I believe that the council should have made these adjustment when they put the rent up as they has the information available to them to do this. I also believe that they should go through each individual case, work out the adjustment and refund the pensioners. After all, this is their money and why should the Council get the profits at the pensioners expense. Claire Shaw, Mareeba

History points to Kempton defeat I read with interest the letter from the recently-defeated Member for Cook, Mr David Kempton (11 February 2015 “Uncertain tines ahead for Cook”). An analysis of the voting figures doesn’t bear out all of Mr Kempton’s reasons for his resounding defeat. First, Mr Gordon received 40 per cent of the primary vote, Mr Kempton received only 33 per cent. Second, the preferences of every other candidate (Katter Party, PUP, Mr Newie and Greens) flowed to Mr Gordon. Cook voters appeared to ignore the LNP exhortation to just vote ‘1’, and clearly, the majority of those smaller party voters actively preferred Mr Gordon as their second choice ahead of Mr Kempton. Perhaps some history helps explain the result. In 2012, Mr Kempton was elected despite a 5 per cent swing against him as the LNP candidate; in an election which saw a massive swing towards the LNP. He was elected largely on the preferences of the Katter’s Australia Party voters, despite what could be interpreted as a degree of per-

DROughTmASTER BuLLS Ready to Work Stud & Commercial Females

sonal unpopularity. Mr Kempton is well-known in certain areas of the electorate. As a lawyer, he frequently and tenaciously represented parties in land matters whose interests were directly opposed to the interests of native title holders. That history may explain the remarkably low vote he received at Hopevale (19 per cent, compared to Mr Gordon’s 68 per cent) and Wujal Wujal (8 per cent, compared to Mr Gordon’s 80%). Mr Kempton was particularly prominent for years in legal battles in precisely those two locations. I suggest that more general issues also influenced the result in Cook: • The swing against the LNP’s Mr Kempton was similar to that of the general swing across the State against the LNP • Residents of Indigneous communities, like those in mom-Indigneous communities, strongly opposed the LNP plan to privatise public assets • Residents of remote communities shared the fears of nurses, doctors, teachers and state public servants about further attacks by the LNP on the employment and the effect of those cuts on services. Those concerns resulted in rational decision-making, as opposed to the somewhat paternalistic suggestion of the effect of scaremongering based on “lies” told to susceptible voters. It is probably encouraging to read that in the years ahead Mr Kempton intends to support “his team” and those who voted for him. I presume he will resume his highly successful legal practice and work for their benefit (and perhaps the other residents of the electorate) in his spare time, and that’s an admirable intention. Childhood Cancer Day

The world marked International Childhood Cancer Day on February 14 and 15. A collaborative initiative, to raise awareness about the impact of childhood cancer and to support children, families and friends affected. Nationally, around 640 children aged 0-14 years are diagnosed with cancer each year. In Queensland, about 144 children are diagnosed annually – around 77 boys and 67 girls. Many of us know that the impact of childhood cancer on a community goes far beyond the numbers. It’s a tragic moment when a family is given the news their child has cancer, and the burden goes beyond the physical – it can affect financLIVESTOCK es, emotional stability, mental health and TRANSPORT 8 Metre Body Truck 30 Years Experience

many social aspects of life. Cancer Council is committed to reducing the effects of a childhood cancer diagnosis on family, friends and the local community. It’s why we independently fund and manage the Australian Paediatric Cancer Registry – one of the few national registers of childhood cancer in the world. Our information and support phone line, 13 11 20, is available for family and friends with questions relating to childhood cancer – from treatment to understanding how to explain the situation to children, to coping mechanisms. We welcome all Queenslanders to call us for confidential support, advice or simply a listening ear from our qualified health professionals. Globally, the focus for International Childhood Cancer Day centered on honouring and supporting kids with cancer, ensuring affordable medicine and better treatments for those affected worldwide. The Union for International Cancer Control revealed new estimates that just a $50 per child investment into paediatric cancer services could dramatically improve worldwide survival rates – an investment worth our funding. In Australia the five-year survival rate for all childhood cancer cases combined increased from 76 per cent during 1992-2001 to 82 per cent during 2002-2011. Today, relative survival for childhood cancer is 92 per cent by the end of the first year after diagnosis – these figures are a testament to the high quality of Australian research, clinical trials and treatment. Concerns still remain, with a survival gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children, and relatively poorer survival for children who live in more remote regions. Cancer Council is working hard to address these gaps – to improve our understanding of the causes – and to provide the necessary resources and support to give all children diagnosed with cancer in Australia the best possible prospects for beating the disease. You can join the International Childhood Cancer Day conversation by making a donation to CCQ, or follow us on social media to raise awareness, show support and express empathy for those affected. And if you know someone affected by childhood cancer, urge them to get in touch for support and advice – it could ease their personal burden more than you realise. More information about Cancer Council Queensland and all childhood cancers is available via 13 11 20 or cancerqld. org.au.

Planning scheme consultant appointed Council has accepted the offer by Cardno HRP to progress the draft Mareeba Shire Planning Scheme, through to the stage where it will be ready for council’s adoption. “Prior to de-amalgamation, substantial work had been undertaken in the preparation of a new planning scheme for the former Tablelands Regional Council local government area; including Mareeba Shire,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “The draft planning scheme was publicly notified between January and March

2013 and attracted approximately 2,000 submissions. Consideration of these submissions was underway at the de-amalgamation date. “Council sees the need to progress the draft planning schemes as soon as possible, so proposals were sought from experienced planning consultants were sought to undertake the remaining planning scheme preparation tasks,” Mayor Gilmore said. The project is scheduled to re-commence in March 2015.

A busy month of park and garden maintenance The Mareeba Shire Council has completed a number of Parks and Gardens maintenance as well as bridge works during the month of January. “Parks and Gardens has carried out general repairs and maintenance at the Town Hall in Dimbulah, Vains Park, Mt Molloy and Byrnes Street medians,” Mayor Gilmore said. “Borzi Park, and Arnold Park, Mareeba; general repairs and maintenance has also been carried out on Kuranda Parks, Library, CBD and streets.” Once the design for the Costin Street pavement rehabilitation project is finalised, basic estimates and material quotations will be completed and works will commence. “It is anticipated the start date will be approximately late March,” Mayor Gil-

QITE is assisting in Mareeba locals on the road to secure employment by providing special project opportunities for jobseekers. The current project sees program participants collecting plastic material that has been discarded; and reincarnating it into quality household items. Projects such as these are part of the federal government funded ‘work for the dole’ program, which allows participants to complete allocated hours in a safe and supportive environment. Megan Bayliss, who is supervis-

ing the exciting project, said she was keen to reduce the amount of plastic material going to waste and put it to good use. The plastic material (which can range from potato chip packets and ice cream wrappers) is collected by participants, who then weave the materials into everyday household items. Some items that have been popular with locals include pencil cases, stubby colours and even handbags and purses. “Let us turn your junk into funk,” she said. “All participants work on the project for 16 hours a week, which is spread over two days.

“Within every day, they are learning elements of language, literacy and numeracy, which they can take back to their loved ones at home.” Although positive strides have been made in the program, Ms Bayliss said she was keen for the local community to help donate toward the project. “If people could collect their old potato chip wrappers, ice cream wrappers and aluminium soft drink cans; feel free to bring them in to us for the project,” she said. “These projects are designed to give all participants self confidence and develop reliability, which is essential during employment.

Courageous due to shave for a cause By Justin Fris

Nicholas and Samantha Kerlin (with their hair still on) ahead of next month’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’

TWO Mareeba siblings are being brave and shaving their hair for a worthy cause next month. Nicholas (12 years old) and Samantha (17 years old) Kerlin, who both attend St Andrews Catholic College in Cairns, are committed to helping those who need it. Samantha spoke about the strong sense of community at St Andrews, where students are encouraged to participate in outside curricular activities and events. In her role as School Captain, she has inspired several of her peers to spread the word about the upcoming ‘World’s Greatest Shave’, which is facilitated by the Leukaemia Foundation. The event, which will run between March 12 and 15, is designed to raise money for those battling blood-based cancers. Individuals, or teams are encouraged to sign up, donate and shave off their hair in a bid to raise awareness for those who battle it on a daily basis. Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland Chief Executive Officer Bill Petch said he was hopeful that donations could continue to benefit those impacted by cancer.

“World’s Greatest Shave is our most important fundraiser and provides most of the funds we need to maintain four accommodation villages for patients as well as the provision of services such as counselling, education and transport designed to help them through a very challenging time,” he said. “Today, six Queenslanders are expected to be diagnosed with a blood cancer. “The research we fund seeks to develop more effective treatments and investigate the causes of a range of blood cancers in the hope that one day soon cures will be available for everyone. “Losing your hair for a short while will help others for a long while, so I encourage everyone to take part. “If this is not your year to shave you can support a shaver, colour your hair or donate.” In their spare time, Samantha has a passion for visual arts, while Nicholas enjoys drama and has featured in select shows and short movies. Mother Deborah said she was supportive of her children’s involvement in the eventand that is was wonderful they wanted to give back to the community.

Remain aware of epilepsy MARCH signals a month where awareness of epilepsy is highlighted and culminated with ‘Purple Day for Epilepsy’ on March 26. Around 94,000 Queenslanders are affected by epilepsy, with many younger members of society unaware about the world’s most common brain disorder. Epilepsy is a disease which impacts on the central nervous system of the human brain. Seizures result in nerve cell activity being interrupted, which can cause several abnormal symptoms. There is no single definitive ‘cause’ of the disease, as a myriad of factors can contribute towards it. Some cases are genetic, whereas others can stem from chronic infectious diseases. An epileptic seizure occurs where electrical patterns in the human brain are severely disrupted en route to the rest of the body. This situation can result in behavioural

changes, bodily movement or even a temporary loss of consciousness. Seizures are not pleasant for those who experience them, or family members who witness their loved ones go through them. ‘Purple Day for Epilepsy’ is designed to raise funds for both families and individuals that are impacted by the condition. Epilepsy Queensland spokeswoman Lindsey Navin said there were several ways that the local community could participate on the day, including: wearing purple, making a financial donation, buying merchandise or hosting a purple party. Event organisers are hoping to build on previous totals and raise over $150,000 in a bid to help those who rely on Epilepsy Queensland’s resources and support. RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS New on the Rising Sun screen this week is THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIIGOLD HOTEL, and it’s just as good as its highly successful predecesor. With a great cast that includes Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith. Judi Dench and Richard Gere, it has all the style, humour and panache that was so much in evidence in the first film Continuing for a third and final week is FIFTY SHADES OF GREY – one of the biggest movies of the decade around the world. Starting next Thursday is AMERICAN SNIPER – an excellent human drama , set during the recent Iraq conflict- starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Millar.

shapely, lacy bottom of Dakota Johnson's Anastasia Steele. Perfectly capturing the tone of E.L. James' sensational bestselling novel, this tale of control, sex and submission is tantalizing, titillating and provocative as it offers a voyeuristic peek into a dark world behind closed doors where pain and pleasure are prime menu items. It is a big tease. Fans will not be disappointed - it's the new Twilight, 9 1/2 Weeks and Secretary all rolled into one. Targeted largely at a female audience, it is an outright chick flick; the guys may be less enthusiastic. It relies on our fascination and dynamic between the two lead characters. There is no shopping spree as such, but Anastasia gets the spoils, like Julia Roberts did in Pretty Woman: clothes, cars, helicopters and joy rides. He wants her to belong to him: to be his submissive. She just wants the 'normal' things: to touch him, go on a date, make love and spend the night together. But that's not how Christian is wired. Cable ties, masking tape, rope, peacock feathers and leather whips are his playthings. Watch out for the scene at Christian's swanky offices, in which Anastasia calls the shots when negotiating the terms of the bondage contracts he wants her to sign. Stylishly shot and delivering on expectations, TaylorJohnson paces the film beautifully, the sense of anticipation created from the hot and cold nature of the ever-changing relationship. Of course, we know there are three films in the series, so be prepared for a tease - after all, isn't that indicative of the entire film?

SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

When innocent college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) interviews the young, brilliant, and beautiful entrepreneur Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), she is surprised to discover that she desires him deeply. And as for Christian, he finds himself intrigued by, and unable to resist, the extremely attractive and independent Ana - but Christian makes clear that their relationship must proceed on his own terms. Initially hesitant about Christian's shocking erotic preferences, Ana uncovers the man's secrets, demons, and the roots of his need for control as the pair becomes physically and passionately involved. As the affair grows, Ana even confronts her own unexpected dark desires. It's an erotic, amusing, and spicy tale of emotional growth and physical pleasures. Review by Louise Keller: She is a romantic in the English literature sense; he doesn't do romance, dates or sleepovers, just kinky sex in his playroom - The Red Room of Pleasure. Welcome to my world, says Jamie Dornan's Christian Grey, as he spanks the

Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to 'leave no one behind.' When he returns home to his wife Taya (Sienna Miller) and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind.

PROPERTY Acreage of the edge of town Located on the Atherton side of Mareeba, 600m from St Stephen's Catholic College, is this home on a generous 7210m2 allotment featuring three bedrooms, two bathrooms and rendered Besser block. The corner allotment is fully fenced, and divided into a house block and small paddock. There are neighbours on just one boundary, however the mature vegetation ensures they are almost always out of sight. The exterior of the home is visually appealing. It presents with large tinted windows, a 'Liquid Tile' wrap-around patio which stretches across the northern and eastern sides of the home. Note the ceiling fans, external power points, and fluoro lighting. Inside is open-plan, fully tiled and feels spacious. The living area is huge and measures approximately 7m x 8m. All bedrooms have built-ins, with 3+ sets of power points, T.V. and telephone/internet sockets. The home chef will be delighted with the kitchen. It is welllit, and provides a good amount of bench space and storage. There is also an excess of power points. A glass cooktop/fan forced oven with range-hood is present plus a dishwasher and ceiling fan. Outside is an 11m x 9m, 3-bay, Colorbond shed. It is well-lit,

lockable, has a surplus of internal and external power-points, and several sliding windows. There is three phase power on the allotment. Acreage homes like this with so many features so close to town are few and far between. Contact Craig De Lai at Mareeba Property Office on 0407 823 530.

The Wildcats prepare for a free throw.

The Barras and MBA Deadlys square off.

All eyes on the prize as the Red Devils and Comets begin their match.

The Comets make a telling basket during the second quarter.

Mareeba basketball season tips off By Justin Fris

MAREEBA’s senior men’s basketball competition commenced in earnest last Thursday, with a solid slate of opening matches. Dedicated faithful sat courtside and took in three matches, which featured a number of teenage players facing significantly older opponents. This oversight failed to deter the players, who gave as well as they got in a family oriented setting. Festivities began with the Stingrays beginning their title defence against the Wildcats. The champions were missing livewire Brock Hawke, who was unavailable due to uni commitments. Extremely enthusiastic, the Wildcats held

their own in the middle of the court, but lacked quality finishing in the key at times. Despite always having continual control of the game, the Stingrays were forced to earn the margin of their victory, as their youthful opponents ran out the game strong. An opening 56-45 victory will please the Stingrays; and they will be keen to completely dust all off-season cobwebs in the following weeks. After being defeated in last season’s grand final, the Red Devils were keen to bounce back quickly against an improving Comets side. Both sides took a while to warm up in this one, with field goal shooting well and truly under the 50 per cent mark across the board.

PAGE 22 The Express, Wednesday, February 25, 2015

With only a slender lead, the Comets rode their luck and threatened to break the game open against their favoured opponents. Trailing 22-18 at the half, Comets players were beaming as they re-focused on delivering a tight finish in the match. But before underdog lovers had a chance to get their pens ready, Clinton Cameron turned the game on its head and put the Red Devils out of sight. Cameron’s uncanny ability to read the play and smartness around the glass was a real highlight of the match. He was solidly supported by Justice Eales, which ensured the Red Devils built an ominous 34-24 lead at the final change.

Clearly stung by the sudden burst, Comets players were instructed not to get downhearted and finish the game to the end. Both sides finished the game with an identical 4/13 field goal shooting record in the final term, which impacted on the overall flow of the game. The final match of the night saw the Barras face off against the MBA Deadlys, with both sides fielding a solid blend of youth and experience. With Mareeba product Aron Baynes flying high with the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA, the exposure of Mareeba as a basketball hotbed has never been higher. It’s still not too late to join, with players from all ages and abilities welcome to come play.

Bomber top scores in Bandits crushing win

Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams who top scored for the Bandits on Sunday. Photos by Peter Roy. By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba Bandits toyed with a meek Innisfail side during their one-day match at Kerribee Park last Sunday. After a blistering opening to their innings, the Bandits finished on 6/220 from their 30 overs; but in truth, it could have been well beyond 300. In reply, the visitors’ run-rate toward the 221 target resembled a baby learning to walk, being dismissed for 78 all-out in the 28th over. Weather looked almost certain to disrupt or even abandon play all day, but thankfully mother nature must enjoy her cricket on the Tablelands. The hosts batted first, with Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams and Robert Taylor opening the order. Anything remotely juicy was despatched to the rope. Cruising at 0/101 off 13 overs, it seemed the

home side could name their target after the allotted 30 overs. Adams played a marvellous knock of 79 from 55 balls. He saw the ball brilliantly all day and backed up his deeds with the ball later on in the afternoon. To their credit, the visitors finally got some reward for their toil, putting the clamps down on the home side’s dominance midway through the innings. The Bandits only managed 20 runs between the 19th and 23rd over, as a short flurry of wickets had new batsmen Zac Adams and Brendan Falvo needing to play themselves in. Nearing the end of the innings, Rowan Foxwell joined the party, hitting a series of boundaries which ballooned out the victory target for the visitors.

Tablelands Athletics set to hit the track

Tristan Xiong was the best of the bowlers for Innisfail, claiming 3/22 off five overs. He played a lone hand all day against a hungry Bandits batting line-up. Rumbling thunder in the distance had spectators ducking for cover, as a report of heavy rain in Atherton was on its way to Mareeba. Conscious of needing points to stay in the top four, the Bandits decided to speed through their over rate. In the event of rain or stormy weather abandoning play, if both sides have batted for at least 15 overs each, the side with the higher score at the 15th over mark is deemed the victor. The visitors began badly in their run chase, with tight, disciplined bowling ensuring their run-rate never got off the ground. At the drinks break, the visitors were 2/44; a

Tablelands Athletcs Club held their annual Sign-On Day last Sunday at Tolga Reserve. Centre Manager Gerald Raciti said he was impressed with registration numbers and was hopeful that many more club members would represent their region, state and country over the coming year. “Members of our club range from all the way out in Dimbulah, in Mareeba and down to areas like Ravenshoe and Malanda,” he said.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

“I’d like to make a special mention to the team at Shed Boss and Terry Barnes, who’ve helped a lot with the new infrastructure. “If anyone is interested to come down and compete, you are more than welcome to come down to our club-days. “Training also takes place at our facility on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between the ages of four and Masters.” If you would like further information on the upcoming season, please contact Gerald Raciti on 4091 7075.

far cry from Mareeba’s innings total (2/117) during the same period of the match. With the pressure of victory off (regardless of the weather), youngsters Luke Lamborn, Chris Adams and Lachlan Ford entered the fray. Both Ford and Lamborn finished with 2/0, with Lamborn denied a hat-trick as there were no more batsmen left to dismiss. Brewer was serviceable on both sides, chalking up 45 off 42 deliveries at the crease, while adding 1/14 off four overs during his bowling spell. The Bandits will make the lengthy journey down to Tully next Sunday afternoon, in a bid to stay in the top four. Victory during that match could well determine where they will play during the finals.

AFTER initially being given a brutal schedule for the 2015 season, the Mareeba Gladiators faithful can breathe a sigh of relief. Taking on board feedback from all CDRL clubs, league officials have tinkered with the fixtures in a bid to spread equity across the entire competition. Gladiator officials were originally advised that their final home match of the year would be played on July 4, meaning their final six matches would all be away from home. This burden has now been shelved off the shoulders of David Grainer’s men, who can now concentrate on getting their mindset right for round one against Innisfail. Davies Park will predominantly host matches on Saturday, with two of the first three Gladiators fix-

tures held at the ground. Atherton will also begin with two of their first three matches at home, with two derbies against Mareeba locked away for rounds 11 and 18. The Roosters’ longest stretch away from home will be between rounds 13 and 17, when their ground will be required for show commitments. Barlow Park will host the majority of the finals series in 2015, with Brothers (Innisfail) being selected to host the preliminary final. Mareeba will have its byes in rounds four and 16, with Atherton’s in round 10 and 21. Both sides will be keen to chalk up early wins, with a kinder draw now offering no excuses for failure. The Roosters have also confirmed their opening pre-season trial against Ivanhoes on February 28 at Roosters Stadium. All three grades will be in action, with the matches commencing at 4pm.
