A

PERFECT storm of financial problems has led Tablelands Regional Council to implement a prudent budget. The council’s first full financial year budget since de-amalgamation included cost cutting and revenue raising measures with an average general rates increase of 4.6 per cent and consolidation of services and facilities.

Council will be operating at a projected deficit of more than $13.5million at the end of this financial year and a projected deficit of more than $1.5million at the end of next financial year. Mayor Rosa Lee Long said council faced “an almost perfect storm of financial issues” which led to councillors having to make “hard decisions”. These factors included de-amalgamation from Mareeba Shire, which led to loss of economies of

scale, and reductions in State and Federal government funding. She said instead of continuing further into financial distress the council was now aiming for a surplus in the 2016-2017 financial year. “We have also worked hard to ensure this budget is carried out with the least possible impact on our ratepayers,” Mayor Lee Long said. “There may be impacts on the services council is able to offer the community, however we have
