Precinct gets go ahead C By Ryan Groube

ouncil has granted a local developer approval to build a shopping precinct in a key urban growth area on the eastern outskirts of Mareeba. Developers BTM and S Stankovich will now fasttrack design and building plans for the precinct which will include a shopping centre, two specialist shops, a medical centre and a cafe or restaurant. The Amaroo Village Shopping Centre, to be built on Hastie Road, has been in the pipeline since 2009 with the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) rubber stamping the project at its latest meeting on February 19. BTM and S Stankovich director Sam Musumeci said the approval marked one of the final steps before we can “look at turning the first sod”. “It is now a matter of putting our plans through [council’s] building section and then we can look at starting construction,” he said. “It is very pleasing to have had the project approved and now that we know what the conditions are we can get right into the design stage. Our hope is that we can get the first stage underway fairly soon. There is a lot of future residential land out that way and we felt that having a community centre there was an important step in the development of that area.” Mr Musumeci said it was premature to discuss specifics of the development, including the cost, until the design stage was complete. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said in the town plan there was about 700 acres of undeveloped “future residential” land in the vicinity of Hastie Road alone. Mr Gilmore said council understood the eastern outskirts of Mareeba was where future urban growth would be most prevalent. “There is a very large area of future urban land out that way and this application was both timely and necessary to provide a service hub for that growing area.” Council approved the development unanimously. Mr Gilmore said there was still a lot of work to be done and that what the February 19 approval did was “set the rules for the development”.

Youth of the Year By Boyd Robertson

Teenager Grace Lawrence has come out on top after the combined Atherton and Tolga Youth of the Year hosted by the Lions Club of Atherton on February 15. Grace, 16, and fellow competitor Jessica Honan, representing Tolga, are now scheduled to attend zone finals in Atherton on March 15. Grace, who lives in Atherton, said she was “surprised” to take out both the overall competition and the public speaking award, which she closely contested with Jessica. “[Jessica]’s speech was fantastic,” said Grace. “But it’s a lovely feeling to know I’ve made it onto the finals.” Grace’s speech, which she will also use at the finals, revolved around the power of traditional fairy tales to influence stereotypes about gender roles in modern society. “What I focused on was the classic Disney Princesses, who I think really come across as very passive

School. “Both students have put a lot of their own time committing to this Lions project,” she said. The enthusiasm the students have to serve their community and help better not only themselves but others as well becomes abundantly clear when we see them in this competition. Without it, we would not hear of the likes of Grace Lawrence and Jessica Honan.”

A Yungaburra filmmaker will attend an international documentary conference in March, courtesy of a grant from the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). Sarah Scragg was granted $1066 by the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC)’s RADF committee at council’s February 20 meeting. The grant will cover travel and registration expenses for Sarah to attend the Australian International Documentary Conference in Adelaide in early March. For the last 18 months, Sarah has been filming local artist William T Cooper as he creates scientifically accurate paintings of bird life. Sarah is now editing her documentary, which weaves together footage of Mr Cooper’s creation techniques along with his life story. She hopes to put the Tablelands on the map by selling the film to the ABC or another of the many potential buyers she will meet at the Adelaide conference. Although assisted by some start-up funds from RADF and Screen Queensland, her project is largely self-funded. Sarah has been making films for more

than 14 years, starting with a documentary in Mongolia in 1999, which was shown on Channel 7’s World Around Us program. Since then she has worked on television shows such as Big Brother in addition to numerous documentaries for community organisations such as the Malanda Visitors Information Centre and government bodies like DNRM. Sarah said the grant was a “big help” in being able to attend the conference. “Really what it means is I’m going to be able to meet people like the ABC and international distributors,” she said. “It’s a big opportunity and I’m very grateful to have a chance at it.” TRC mayor Rosa Lee Long said council was happy to help Ms Scragg get to the conference. “This has been identified as a worthy activity by the RADF Committee,” she said. “Attending this event allows Sarah to meet face to face with other film makes and professionals and to pitch her project concept to buyers. “She is also planning to meet representatives of international organisations such as the BBC.”

Filmmaker Sarah Scragg will be heading to a documentary conference in Adelaide in March.

Member for Cook David Kempton, Mareeba Shire Council mayor Tom Gilmore, Queensland Local Government minister David Crisafulli and Member for Barron River Michael Trout

Minister ‘impressed’ by MSC By Ryan Groube Local Government Minister David Crisafulli visited the Tableland on February 19 to meet with the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) as part of a whirlwind tour of Queensland’s four newly de-amalgamated councils. The confidential meeting, which ran for more than an hour behind closed doors at the Rankin Street chambers, was an opportunity for the MSC to put their challenges directly to the Minister. Key items raised by council was the difficulty ratepayers would face in funding “big ticket” infrastructure items as well as the need for clar-

ity regarding the requirements of developing a new planning scheme. Mr Crisafulli said he had been impressed by the MSC and that he understands the financial and long-term planning challenges facing the fledgling council. “Its early days and there is no doubt there are challenges ahead, challenges in long-term planning, challenges on the financial front but I think it’s a good mix of people and I think they are heading in the right direction early on,” he said. “There is no doubt they need some help with some of their big ticket infrastructure projects, which is something the Mayor has pushed very,

very hard.” The development of a new planning scheme for the MSC was also discussed in-depth with confusion about the State Government’s requirements that controversial overlays be included. Within two-years the new MSC will need to submit a new planning scheme to the State Government for approval. The MSC will draw heavily from the Tablelands Regional Council’s draft planning scheme which generated controversy last year. Tableland residents are concerned that the overlays would restrict their ability to develop their properties.

Mr Crisafulli said as far as he was concerned council could, “get those overlays, put them in a nice little ball and set them on fire.” While MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore doesn’t believe resolving the overlays issue would “be as simple as that” he said it was encouraging that the State Government was willing to let council be in control of their planning processes. Mr Gilmore said the opportunity for council to get face-time with the Minister was invaluable. “This was a wonderful opportunity for me and for my council to engage with the Minister who is the most important person in local government in Queensland,” he said.

Crisafulli will not deal with infighting By Ryan Groube and Boyd Robertson The dysfunction gripping the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) will have to be resolved internally with Local Government Minister David Crisafulli ruling out State Government intervention. Post de-amalgamation TRC meetings have been punctuated by a series of bitter and public outbursts from a minority faction within council unhappy with Mayor Rosa Lee Long’s use of her casting vote. During a visit to the Tableland on February 19, The Express asked the Minister if he was aware of the problems facing the TRC and if he was prepared to step in. Mr Crisafulli said he was in regular contact with Cr Lee Long but that ultimately it was council’s job, not his, to make decisions in the best interest of the community. “Like all democratically elected organisations they have a right to serve their community and they have a right to make decisions. Now, what my view is on what is the wrong and right decision should be completely irrelevant to the people of the Tablelands,” he said. “They [Tablelands residents] have elected a local council and that council needs to make decisions and they will be judged on those decisions [at the election] in 2016, not by me sitting at a desk many, many miles away.” The day after the Minister’s visit, the TRC’s ordinary meeting in Atherton was again plagued by controversy over Cr Lee Long’s use of her casting vote. For the third consecutive meeting, Cr Lee

Long was attacked by councillors Shaaron Lin- bother employing engineers at council at all, wood and Marjorie Pagani over the use of the seeing as we are all apparently experts in the tie-breaking vote. field,” she said. Nominations open for 11th Barrow Race By Ryan Groube AFTER a record breaking 2013, nominations for this years Great Wheelbarrow Race were opened last week. The annual race, now in its 11th year, sees competitors push a wheelbarrow 140 kilometres from Mareeba to Chillagoe over three days. Begun as a tribute to the region’s pioneers, the race attracted a record 72 teams in 2013 that collectively raised more than $460,000 for charity. The nomination period runs until April 25 with organisers adding a solo female category for the first time this year. Other categories include: male, female or mixed teams of up to 10 people, solo, duo, over 40s, school students and services (police, firefighters etc). Teams can nominate on-

line at www.greatwheelbarrowrace.com or by picking up forms at Mareeba Shire Council offices. As part of the nomination, teams must supply a marshal over the three days and teams must also have their own transport and driver. Great Wheelbarrow Race chair Nipper Brown has urged returning racers and new-comers alike to get their nomination forms in early. “This fantastic event has built up its own traditions of fun, of competition and community spirit and of raising really significant amounts of money for a variety of charity and community groups,” he said. “If you haven’t done it before it is certainly worth doing and getting nominations in early makes it much easier for us to cater for everyone.” The 2014 event will be held from May 16-18.

Help for school program By Ryan Groube A Federally funded program hopes to improve Indigenous attendance at schools across the Tableland to 90 per cent by the end of the year. The Parental and Community Engagement (PaCE) program has secured $270,000 to reach out to the Indigenous community in a bid to boost attendance and academic results. Last week, PaCE officers met at Mulungu Medical Centre in Mareeba to develop a roll-out plan for the project. Overseen by co-ordinator Donna Grogan, the program has three engagement officers who service the Tableland. In 2014, the PaCE will focus on the communities of Mareeba, Mt Garnet and Ravenshoe. In Mareeba, the attendance rate for Indigenous students at primary school sits at 91 per cent but that drops to 87 per cent during secondary school. The attendance rates for Mt Garnet and Ravenshoe are at 88 per cent. The Express also understands a large cohort of school-aged Indigenous students are not enrolled in school. The schools have developed campaigns attempting to highlight the impor-

tance of attendance such as the ‘every day counts’ slogan. Mrs Grogan said a series of workshops will stress the importance of school attendance while officers will also reach out to individual families. She said the reason for the low attendance rates are many and varied and that a key part of the project was to get Indigenous families to engage with schools. “We want to be informing parents about what the expectations of the schools are and the importance of their children going to school,” she said. “Our focus is on younger students because if you don’t capture these kids by the time they get to year three they are really going to struggle to catch up. “If we can get just one family to send their kids to school every day then that can have a ripple effect through the whole community.” Another key element of the program is to improve the way Indigenous parents are involved in local schools. The program will encourage parents to join the schools P and C or attend parent teacher interviews as well as being involved in their children’s learning while at home.

Colony of flying foxes to be moved on The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) will take action to move on a massive colony of Little Red Flying Foxes camped on the banks of the Wild River in Herberton (pictured). At the TRC’s February 20 meeting councillor Shaaron Linwood relayed community concerns over the growing colony, which was reported on by The Express earlier in the year (No Eviction Notice for Bats, January 14). The animals had been expected to leave the area of their own accord once certain species of trees had finished flowering but instead the colony has continued to expand.

The number of animals is now estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands and many residents are complaining of smell, noise and water contamination, in addition to concerns about damage to trees along the river. Council voted unanimously to support Cr Linwood’s motion to move on the flying foxes. Pre-deamalgamation, the TRC had moved on colonies at Mareeba, Atherton and Yungaburra. Council will need to obtain permission from the State Government and it is expected the issue will be the subject of a report at a future meeting.

NAILS Ivy Barsby, from Kuranda, with mum Christy and dad Jason and sister Mae, at the 2014 Rare Disease Day Fun Run and Walk in Cairns on Sunday. PHOTO BY PETER ROY PHOTOGRAPHER.

Tough little Ivy is beating the odds By Boyd Robertson A Kuranda girl battling an uncommon condition and her family have taken part in a charity walk along the Cairns Esplanade in a bid to raise awareness of rare diseases in Far North Queensland. Ivy Barsby, 5, suffers from a condition called trisomy-10 monosomy-4, which has a range of physical and intellectual impacts. She is unable to talk or effectively walk, but still participated in the Rare Disease Day Fun Run and Walk 2014 along the Esplanade on February 23. The Fun Run and Walk aims to raise awareness of rare diseases and funds to fight them that will be kept in Far North Queensland. Parents Christie and Jason Barsby were with her, with Christie describing her daughter as “very tough.” “Ivy started off the walk with us –

in previous years we had her in a special walker and she walked a little of the way with us then had a rest,” Christie said. “She crossed the finish line with us and the whole team, which was great.” A team of about 50 people, mostly family and friends, took part in the walk alongside the Barsbys. The Barsbys also sold more than 100 branded shirts for the fundraising aspect of the Walk. Ivy was diagnosed at birth and was originally given two weeks to live. Her condition is so rare there was no real reference material for the doctors to check against so her parents were told to simply “take it as it comes.” Ivy is now learning sign language and entering prep classes. Christie said that two major sponsors and plenty of the Barsbys’ team are already signed on for next year’s event.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Linwood sets the record straight Whilst I do not want to get into a public debate about council issues, I do want to set the record straight about the claims made by Mayor Rosa Lee Long in a recent letter to the editor (The Express, page six, February 19) where she states that she used her casting vote only three times at the council meeting of February 6. I would suggest that anyone who wants to know the truth should log onto the Tablelands Regional Council website where they will see that this statement is blatant spin-doctoring and a manipulation of the facts. As was reported in both papers, the Mayor used her casting vote to vote against an agricultural buffering policy, then to vote on a new motion in regard to that policy; to vote for deferral of a motion for extra funding for works on Gunnawarra Road, and to vote against the independent noise monitoring of Windy Hill wind farm. Unless my mother failed miserably in my education, this adds up to four times the casting vote was applied. I have always expected truth in reporting from the media and I expect no less from my colleagues. By the way, the Mayor has used her casting vote again twice at the meeting of February 20, once to reject the officer’s recommendation for the extra funding on Gunnawarra

Road, and then for a new motion to move the funding to where she wanted it to go. She may well try once again to claim that it was used only once as the votes were on the same item, but the facts remain that there were two distinct motions regarding the issue, hence two casting votes used. Shaaron Linwood TRC division two councillor Mayor needs to be positive In response to ‘In the Deep End’ which ran on page three of The Express on February 19. Mayor Gilmore states: ‘Are there any questions or have I stunned you all into silence?’ Most likely the business community was stunned into silence because all the Mayor delivered was a lot of negatives. What is there to discuss about a negative? As the leader of the elected representatives of the new Mareeba Shire Council you would at least expect a Mayor to show leadership and put forward some positive information. De-amalgamation costs are inevitable however there are other issues mentioned that could have been followed up with a positive comment. Instead of just stating: ‘the cost of building a new wastewater treatment plant in Mareeba, and huge increases in the cost of operating the shire’s

The Express reserves the right to edit letters

water supply schemes’ it could have been followed up with “we are continuing to seek government assistance for the waste water treatment plant”, or, “I fail to see how the huge increase in water charges by SunWater are justified”. I will be contacting Member for Cook David Kempton to have him enquire further into this matter. Annual CPI increases for water supplied to the Mareeba Shire Council can be swallowed, however, when one megalitre of water delivered to a farmer on the Barron River costs $14.91 how can it be justified to increase, what is already an unreasonable price, on such a massive scale? The percentage increase mentioned [860 per cent] is unbelievable. If cost recovery by SunWater is the name of the game, how is it that the water a farmer pumps is any different to the water the council pumps? Is there a system within a system? Surely not. If the Mayor will not lead, then it is up to the community to do his job for him and ask questions about this blatant money grab. Contact your elected representative about the ridiculous SunWater proposed water increases Peter Parker, Mareeba Split looking like a mistake Well, it looks like the recent de-amalgamation was a really good move - for

the residents in the rest of the Tablelands Regional Council that is. Perhaps not so good for the residents of Mareeba Shire. But hey, you get that in a democracy, don’t you? Druce Horton, Kuranda Act a ‘bobby dazzler’ I would like to thank Tony BristowStagg (MSC shouldn’t micromanage, The Express, page six, February 19) on his advice on the Local Government Act 2009. From what I can gather Tony is saying the voters elect a Mayor and councillors, these elected people then elect a chief executive, set an organisational structure and from then on the chief executive takes over and runs the show. Are you also saying that the Act says that if a council ends up with a hundred or so more staff than necessary it’s nothing to do with the councillors? Again I ask, why have a Mayor and councillors just to do the aforementioned two jobs? Surely a public meeting or some other like forum could handle those two tasks and at no expense. I’d like to know how much experience in Local Government the people had that came up with the Local Government Act 2009, it’s a bobby dazzler. Hopefully they don’t get to make anymore decisions that affect the public. Anyhow Tony I still have faith in the idea that the elected people should have the final say in the running of the council, otherwise we could end up with repeats of that costly episode that happened early on with the TRC, when council workers pulled out garden beds in Atherton and replaced them with concrete. There was such a protest made by the public that the concrete was pulled out within a very short time and replaced again with garden beds. It was then reported that councillors, not even the divisional councillor was aware that garden beds were going to be pulled out. No disrespect to the chief executive or other staff - and irrespective of some questionable Act - I’m still going to hold councillors responsible for the running of the Shire I live in. Ron Kane, Mareeba Ethanol industry under threat The Federal Government is proposing to cut the so called “ethanol subsidy”. The overseas oil industry pays one tax, at the point of production, which is 6c per litre. The ethanol industry is taxed at the point of production (40 per cent) and again at the point of sale (at the bowser). So this so called “ethanol subsidy” evens the playing field, ever so slightly. And why should Australian producers be taxed twice, whilst their Middle Eastern oil producer counterparts are taxed only once? Ethanol production reduces our reliance on expensive overseas oil and provides for cheaper fuel for Australians. Currently, we send $19 billion every year to Middle Eastern oil producers which we do not have to send them could be spent here on home soil. Our oil refineries are closing at the rate of one in every two years, with only four remaining. Under the Federal Government’s proposal, our ethanol industry will also disappear and Australia will be unable to produce a litre of fuel. Every country on Earth, other than the Middle East and Australia, has moved to ethanol because it lowers emissions and provides significant

health benefits. Our sugar industry, our cattle industry and our grain industry would be fixed up, on the experience of what has happened in other countries, if we had ethanol. We can also turn the waste from our sugar mills into ethanol and electricity producers, guaranteeing long term market prices for growers and cheaper electricity for Australians. Bob Katter, Member for Kennedy Get on with the job Pagani I have read with interest, the conflict, within the TRC, which has been reported in the local newspapers and also in letters to the editor over the past few weeks. Cr Pagani, you were not elected, unfortunately, by the ratepayers of Division 6, but by Council, after they called for an “Expression of Interest” for the uncontested position. Rosa Lee Long, was elected by a large majority as Mayor of the TRC. If you are not happy with your position maybe you would be best suited for an environment and impact study assessor for wind power as this appears to be all that is on your agenda. Chris Adams, was our former councillor, and deputy mayor, who did a wonderful job. He assimilated with all residents and worked hard to achieve things for Walkamin. It has been nearly two years since the last election and we are yet to meet you, Cr Pagani- so maybe, you need to take a leaf out of Chris Adams book. In my opinion this has been a character assassination against Mayor Lee Long and the code of conduct for council has been abused. I do not agree with statements that have been made, about council possibly being sued over wrong decisions being made within council. It is a sad day that these conflicts are occurring; because Mareeba decided to de-amalgamate - but surely persons can be adult enough to see out the next two years. June Quinn, Walkamin Electricity fairy tale In a long-ago time, the people of Queensland built and paid for their electricity supply systems. Then an evil Government ‘corporatised’ the people’s systems, as the first step on the road to selling them. Straight away some of each electricity bill paid by the people was rather pointlessly wasted on advertising electricity when it didn’t need to be advertised and on executives who earned so much money they had no way to spend it all. As the sole shareholder, the “profits” from these new corporations were taken into revenue by the evil Government and spent on its wicked and wasteful programs. Then one day the people decided the evil Government had to go so they threw them out in a landslide and they elected a new Government who said they would not sell the electricity corporations. The new Government listened to the people and de-corporatised their electricity supply systems and restored them to their rightful place in public ownership. The pointless advertising and executives disappeared, electricity bills went back down to sustainable levels and everyone lived happily ever after. Peter Campion, Tolga

Banana project gets research funding The State government has announced it will back a $1.332 million banana industry research and development project. Speaking at the South Johnstone Research Station, south west of Innisfail, Minister for Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh, announced the three-year joint project between the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and Horticulture Australia Limited. “This project aims to help Queensland producers become more efficient on-farm, produce the best possible quality fruit and importantly, increase profitability,” Mr McVeigh said. “Agriculture is one of the four pillars of Queensland’s economy and projects like this will help us achieve our target of doubling farm production by 2040. “This project will help farmers adopt better growing and crop management practices.”

By Boyd Robertson An indigenous training corporation has gained full control over its future after being granted a 160-acre property by the Federal Government. Indigenous Jobs Connections (IJC) received ownership of the Bilwon Farm training facility north of Biboohra on February 19, the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generation in 2008. IJC were granted the property, valued at around $500,000, from the federally-owned Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC), after showing good management over the course of a four-year lease. A small ceremony at Bilwon Farm attended by IJC board members, ILC representatives and Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch finalised the handover. About 100 trainees pass through Bilwon Farm every year, picking up qualifications in horticulture, rural production, conservation and land management, in addition to non-certified experience in skills like chemical handling. The farm grows pumpkins, lucerne, hay, watermelons and sorghum. IJC had already purchased an adjacent block in anticipation of the sale. The facility was originally owned by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) but was transferred the ILC after ATSIC’s collapse in 2005. IJC itself is a former Community Development Employment

IJC chairperson Maria Richards said receiving ownership of the property was an important strategic and psychological step for her corporation. “Now we can truly say ‘it’s ours’,” she said. “We had to make sure we ticked all the boxes while we were leasing it – and now that we have it we can better follow our constitution, which focuses on helping Indigenous Australians get real skills and real jobs. “Essentially it’s about closing the gap.” Mr Entsch said IJC had shown ‘exceptional good governance’ of the property and had

earned the right to own it. “The decision to divest properties like this to Indigenous bodies is never made lightly,” he said. “IJC’s board has shown they are very dedicated to leadership – they all took Certification 4s in governance in 2011, which I was a part of, so they saw the need for good leadership and they made sure they were going to be able to provide it. “Rhetoric is cheap, but actions make the difference – these guys have made big inroads into closing the gap and they are identifying where skills like aged care are needed in their communities.”

RESIDENTS FEELING THE BITE Mosquitoes in high numbers Recent heavy rainfalls have been both a blessing and a curse for residents of Cook Shire. Reports of increased mosquito numbers present in residential areas where water pooling has occurred, has sparked a response from Council’s Environmental Health Officers. Surveys have been conducted to determine whether Aedes Aegypti, the mosquito species capable of transmitting dengue, was present. Upon testing of samples collected, Council did not find any evidence of this species. In coming weeks, Council intends to treat some static water bodies in populated areas with a mosquito larvicide. Additional survey work will also be undertaken in other residential areas. Residents are asked to look out for any public areas which may be an ideal harbour for mosquitoes, and report these locations to Council’s Planning and Environment team on 07 4069 5444 or email mail@cook.qld.gov.au.

Bad news for small miners By Ryan Groube The president of the North Queensland Miners Association (NQMA), Ralph De Lacey, has hit out at a new State Government levy which he says could force small miners out of the industry. As rates notices were handed out across the Tableland on February 17, miners were being hit by the $400 levy – for each mining lease – under the State Government’s new Emergency Management, Fire and Rescue Levy. The levy, which came into effect on January 1, is an expansion of the former Urban Levy Scheme and is being used to fund emergency services following a series of expensive disaster recovery operations in the past decade. All properties in Queensland have to contribute to the levy and it is the legal responsibility for local councils to collect the levy on behalf of the State Government. Mr De Lacey said the $400 fee is only for six months and those with multiple holdings will struggle to absorb the cost. “Miners within North Queensland hold many tenures for current and future mining programs,” he said. “We have had miners contact the NQMA extremely concerned as they hold up the 10 mining leases over alluvial ground and will be charged for each lease. “This cannot be sustainable for many miners in North Queensland and will push them out of the industry all together.” Mr De Lacey said there are about 4000 granted mining leases in Queensland that will attract the levy. The NQMA board met on February 10 to discuss the implications of the levy and resolved to lobby the State Government to dump the fee for miners. “There should be no levy applied to mining leases. Mining leases should be treated as vacant land,” he said.

Bike circuit gets backing By Ryan Groube An ambitious bid to build a ‘world class’ mountain bike circuit linking far northern towns has received the backing of Member for Cook David Kempton. The ‘Sunny Savannah’ proposal would see the creation of 300 kilometres of trails connecting Cairns, Kuranda, Mareeba, Port Douglas, and many places in between. The proposal was developed over 18-months by Mareeba-based mountain biking group the Mareeba Mountain Goats. Mr Kempton inspected areas within stage one of the proposed route with MMG treasurer Rudi De Faveri and Queensland Parks and Wildlife ranger Rob Miller this week. Stage one would include about 195 kilometres of trail connecting Cairns, Kuranda, Speewah, Koah, Mareeba, Mount Molloy and Port Douglas. “I am really excited about this proposal, it ticks a lot of boxes and the potential flow on effects for the regional economy is enormous,” he said. “Trail biking and adventure tourism is a worldwide phenomenon and Far North Queensland has all the hallmarks to grab a slice of that action.” He said the plan also presented significant health and safety benefits for both local and travelling bike riders. “Having seen many of the proposed trails, it is obvious it has been designed with safety in mind,” he said. “A trail network like this would provide cyclists of all ages and abilities a safe location to enjoy the sport of mountain biking, whilst experiencing some of the world’s most

Rob Miller, Member for Cook David Kempton and Rudi De Faveri spectacular sights and scenery.” Mr De Faveri is now in the process of preparing a business case for the project and gaining support from other stakeholders. “We received our first ever official grant from the State Government last year and that, as well as, having David on board has been our biggest success as a group to date,” he said. “This concept encompasses fantastic views, connects four communities and has the touring aspect of mountain biking that our region has been lacking. “And it doesn’t just have to be used by

mountain bikers either, it could be for walkers, runners, adventure enthusiasts and tourists who want to enjoy our diverse landscape.” Mr Kempton said he had already commenced talks with Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson who had also been positive about the project’s potential. “This is not just some pie in the sky idea, it is a well-researched, genuinely plausible project with the potential to put this region on par with some of the best mountain biking destinations in the world,” he said.

Hi folks, Last month I wrote about some of the guys from the FNQ road racing club here in Mareeba, heading down to compete in The Phillip Island Classic. First I would like to congratulate local rider Jason Allen for his achievement in placing 10th overall for his class and Acco placed 14th overall despite having being rear ended at the hayshed section while he was flat in 5th gear, which sent him over the front of the bike and did a close track inspection. The fossil walked away with a purple and black reminder and he managed to repair his bike to a degree that night, but according to him racing it the next day it was like riding a donkey with a hinge in the middle. Huge effort guys. The Motocross season has kicked off this season and it was good to see a large field at Mareeba for the Sid Carucci Memorial two day meet in the hot conditions, which was a contrast to the club having to cancel their opening club round on February 9, due to the wet weather. The Cairns Motocross club also had weather issues on February 2, and had to cut short their race day due to a storm as well. While I am talking about the Cairns club, the track and grounds look amazing with all the

work put in over the break, and it is a credit to Rob Salafia and his club for building such a prime complex in the North. Vintage Motocross (VMX) is really starting to take off all over the world and Australia now has an established national series which I think is pretty cool. It is awesome to see the old Thumpers and two strokes coming to life again. Personally you can’t beat the sound and smell of a two stroke race bike at full noise, particularly the big bores. Getting your hands on a decent old motocross bike is getting harder as the sport progresses but you will be amazed at what people have sitting in the back of a shed. A mate and I got our hands on a 1988 KX125 that was almost rebuilt so we went halves and finished the rebuild and getting parts for the old KX was pretty easy thanks to the internet and local bike wreckers. The plan was to take turns in racing it in VMX but nearing completion, he offered to buy me out at a good price. Obviously he was pretty happy but I am still wondering if I had the cash I would have bought his share and kept it for myself. I did ride it a few times and I did take a little while to get used to riding a two stroke again but man it was fun and brought back a lot of memories of racing these things back in the 80’s. Next month I will be testing and reviewing some new 2014 bikes and this will include 4-stroke and a 2-stroke.

Brad Riley, TNQT Business Manager for Engineering and Automotive presents Mark Redding, Dealer Principal, Redding Motors a Certificate of Appreciation in acknowledgement of 10 years of exceptional support to TAFE automotive training on the Atherton Tablelands.

For the past 10 years Redding Motors of Atherton and Tropical North Queensland TAFE (TNQT) have worked together to provide automotive training to students in the Vocational Education and Training Schools program and to apprentices across the Tablelands. In this decade-long partnership, more than 120 automotive apprentices have been trained with more than 80 per cent achieving full-time employment in the automotive trade throughout the Tableland. Redding Motors dealer principal Mark Redding said a decade ago it was almost impossible to find young apprentices willing to work on the Tableland. “Going back about 11 years it was a real struggle to get good quality apprentices on the Tableland,” he said. “A lot of the apprentices were going to Cairns for their pre-vocational training and the dealerships in Cairns were snapping them all up and Atherton was missing out. “Since TAFE and I have got together businesses up here have been able to find apprentices and those jobs are staying on the Tableland.” TNQT Business Manager for Engineering and Automotive, Brad Riley said this important 10 year milestone could not have been reached without the support of Mr Redding. “Redding Motors has provided the classroom facilities, a dedicated training workshop, vehicles, tooling and equipment,” he said. “Our association with Redding Motors has

meant TAFE teachers have been able to deliver well-equipped training on site in the Tablelands to school students and apprentices and has negated the need for them to travel to Cairns for the automotive training. “We always like to work closely with industry and this partnership with Redding Motors is a perfect example of how we will go that extra mile to meet the needs of industry and maximise opportunities for employment for our students.” TNQT Institute Director Jo Pyne congratulated Mark Redding on his commitment and dedication to having highly skilled personnel working in the automotive industry in the Tablelands region. “The students and apprentices being trained at Redding Motors facilities by TNQT teachers could not have hoped for a better training environment or a more practical program,” Ms Pyne said. “The training is delivered adjacent to where qualified service personnel are actually at work in the Redding Motors workshops. “At TNQT we pride ourselves on having the state-of-the-art facilities and highly experienced teachers to deliver industry relevant training that results in people getting jobs. We are always ready to take the initiative and ‘think outside the square’ as we interact with industry or employers, such as Redding Motors, to increase the numbers of skilled personnel in our region’s workforce.” Mr Redding said he wanted to continue the partnership with TAFE well into the future.

$8,490 Mareeba Mazda’s Adrian Madrid and Santino Rogato with the new Mazda 3

New Mazda 3 out now The small car segment had better look out because there's a new Mazda 3 that will take the car market by storm. Looking similar to a slightly scaled-down Mazda6 the new Mazda 3 brings with it a rash of advanced technology including one of the better multi-media systems in a car in this price bracket. This is a ground up new model from Mazda with the full gamut of efficiency optimised SkyActiv technology. Not one part is shared with the current model. The car is the same length as the current model but has a longer wheelbase, is lower and wider. The two body shapes, a four door sedan and a five door hatch are available, using more high strength steel in the chassis. New 3 ushers in what Mazda calls i-Active Sense – code for driver assist features like smart city brake support, auto brake function, blind spot monitoring,

pedestrian safety system and a host of other technology designed to either avoid a crash or minimise injury. A five star crash rating is assured. Then there are MZD-Connect, with a driver info-zone featuring the latest generation connectivity system for entertainment and information. A heads-up display will be fitted to the higher range models while the centre pod with touch screen, voice control and dial-select is similar to an IPad complete with apps. The HMI Commander Satnav system will deliver traffic reports as well as general information (speed and red light cameras), speed limit monitoring and radar cruise control will be available on some models. The Mazda 3 arrives with a choice of two naturally aspirated four cylinder petrol engines and two transmissions. The 2.0-litre is capable of an impressive

5.7-litres/100km fuel economy (a 25 per cent improvement) while the 2.5 consumes 6.0. Power outputs are 114kW/200Nm for the smaller capacity engine and 138/250Nm for the larger. Fuel saving i-Stop is fitted as is push button start on some models. Both transmissions are six speeds, both optimised for efficiency and compact size. The suspension geometry is calibrated for local driving - the "rest of the world" setting from the factory which translates into sporty, linear, controlled and responsive. Other dynamics are similarly selected for local consumption. All models share the same calibration and both engines run on 91 octane fuel.

ROBOCOP

In 2028, multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Around the world, their drones have been used by the military for years - and it's meant billions for OmniCorp's bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the US home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) - a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit - is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.

Port Douglas rolls Bandits By Boyd Robertson

Mareeba Gladiators president John Arcidiacono, captain Jack Pedersen, Elders representative Brian Rowling and Gladiators coach Cameron McPherson

Pedersen takes top jersey By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Gladiators held their annual jersey night at Mareeba Leagues Club on February 21, with Elders Mareeba placing the highest bid for sponsorship rights on new captain Jack Pedersen’s jersey. Local businesses bid for the rights to display their names on player jerseys, with the proceeds going to the Mareeba Rugby League Club’s operational expenses for the coming season. Naming rights to Pedersen’s jersey went for $850, with teammate Jason Lea’s shirt close behind, picking up $800 from Mareeba Leagues Club. Elders representative Brian Rowling, who also acted as auctioneer for the night,

said his company was committed to supporting the Gladiators. “We’re happy to support the club and the team in any way, shape or form,” he said. Gladiators president John Arcidiacono said every dollar raised during the auction was vital and would go toward the operation of the club. “Our total is very satisfactory,” Arcidiacono said. “We’re very appreciative of the support from the community and community businesses. “It enables us to put a side on the paddock and run the club.” Pedersen said he was “proud and honoured” to wear the sponsored jersey on be-

half of his club. The towering 25-year-old is also excited to step into the captain’s boots and said he would ‘lead by example’. “I don’t talk that much so hopefully I can show the boys through how I play,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of young fellas on the team that are going to need some experience but hopefully we can just get everyone enjoying themselves playing footy.” The Gladiators’ first preseason game against Edmonton at Davies Park on February 22 ended in a last-minute defeat, with the Storm crossing the line for a successful try and conversion to boost their score from 16 to 22.

The Mareeba Bandits have been handed another thrashing by the Douglas Dragons at Kerribee Park on Sunday, being bowled out on the 30th over on 85 runs. Port Douglas took 23 overs to get to Mareeba’s total and ended the game on seven wickets for 86 runs. Bandits spokesperson Danny Shaw said adverse conditions had been a factor in the loss but the team bore the true responsibility. “The grounds were a bit iffy in that were hitting the ball and it wasn’t running the boundary – you’d only get one run out of each hit,” he said.

“But we weren’t in good shape at all – our batting was definitely sub-par for the day.” Shaw did say that the Bandits’ bowling had been better than their batting, naming Rob Wallace, himself and Brett Pearce as the team’s top bowlers for the day. Shaw also said that it was more than likely that the Bandits would tangle with Port Douglas again at semi-finals. “They’ve beaten us twice already this season and it’s looking like we might have to face them in the semis,” he said. “Obviously we’re going to have to work something out about how to deal with them before then.”

Bulls crush Cutters The Mareeba Bulls kicked off their 2014 football in impressive form on Saturday night, trampling the hapless Innisfail Cutters 8-1 at Edge Hill in the opening match of the new FFA Cup. It is five years since the Bulls have tasted premiership glory and the team has now put down the biggest signal that 2014 could be their year, totally outplaying the Cutters from start to finish and moving onto the second round of the nationwide knockout competition. Almost five months have passed since their semi-final loss, but the Bulls looked like they just stepped out of October and eased back into their possession-based football, and even had the luxury of starting 2013 Bulls player of the year Wayne Srhoj on the bench. After a tense opening 15 minutes, the Bulls took the lead through striker Steven Cater and it was a case of ‘game over’. The Cutters did spend some time at 2-1 but the Bulls finished the first half 4-1 up. In the second period, the Bulls continued to run rampant scoring another four unanswered goals to finish off the Cutters 8-1, who by the end of the match were chasing shadows as the Bulls’ superior preparation shined through. Despite the impressive performance, coach Alex Srhoj was quick to point out the Bulls still have a long way to go until the team will be happy, “It was a great first up performance, but it means nothing - we have plenty of work to do,” Srhoj said. “We set the standard now, we will

continue to raise it every time we play and train. “It was pleasing to see the boys continue to put the Cutters to sword over and over again - we need to find that level of ruthlessness to kill off teams.” Srhoj also said it was good to see strikers, Cater, Paul Ruiz and Anthony Mete all scoring. “It something we are working on to score more goals, and need our strikers to be doing the job,” he said. “This is also a improvement on last year already. “But nothing is a given - I have been involved in to many close shaves and grand final losses to know that nothing comes easy and we still have to be at our best every week to make sure.” The Bulls still have returning defender Larry Maggio to come in, midfielder Josh Ruiz did not play, nor did defender Anthony Henderson. Srhoj said this indicates there is plenty of options for the club and players will need to work hard for their spots. “We have two or three players for every position,” he said. “Everyone has to fight, has to show he commitment to want to wear the jersey and play for the club.” The Bulls now return to the training paddock and will look towards the second round draw for the cup, which could include home or away games against Douglas, Stratford or Leichardt to be played on either March 8 or 9. The annual Mazda Cup will be held on March 15-16.

Cairns club shoots true at Mareeba meet

McKinlay house captains Ben Abbey, Kiarna La Rosa, Rachel Whiteing and Chris Scott

McKinlay clinches swimming comp By Boyd Robertson The McKinlay Dragons have claimed victory at the Mareeba State High School (MSHS) swimming carnival, for the first time in nearly a decade. Great participation rates across all divisions at the carnival, held at Mareeba Swimming Pool on February 23, saw McKinlay edge out their Leichhardt Sharks rivals by just 21 points, ending the day with a score of 645. The Gregory Crocs came in third on 559 points, followed by the Kennedy Tigers on 507. Jodie Lea was the Open Girls age champion while Marcus Tieppo took out the title for Open Boys.

No current McKinlay student has ever seen their house win a swimming carnival, with the Dragons last splashing to the top spot in 2005. Newly-appointed McKinlay captains Kiarna La Rosa and Chris Scott applauded their house for the win. “Participation was the key reason we won,” La Rosa said after the announcement. “Everyone got in and had a go, no-one complained and we came out on top. “I really want to thank everyone in house McKinlay and say to the other houses ‘nice try, but sorry’.” La Rosa went on to say that McKinlay would now look to take

out the school’s cross-country championship and athletics carnival later in the year. MSHS sports co-ordinator Terry McClelland said the day had been a great success no matter which house was the victor. “It’s fantastic to see this standard of competition at our swimming carnival,” he said. “McKinlay’s last win was years and years ago and it’s great to see them get up this year – they took a leaf out of the other houses’ book and really upped their participation rates.” A tweaking of this year’s carnival’s rules allowed candidates from both A and B divisions to be eligible for age champion.

Atherton Tableland Hockey sign-on day Loder Park, Atherton on Sunday, February 23 Shooting action at the Mareeba Rifle Club on Sunday

By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Rifle Club has hosted its annual prize meeting, with shooters coming from far and wide to test their skills. Open only to National Rifle Association of Australia (NRAA) members, the event saw 47 competitors, some from as far away as Mackay, take on the club’s 500-yard and 600-yard ranges in target and F-class rifle shooting. Cairns Rifle Club (CRC) captain Trevor Deed took out a swag of titles, including the top aggregate points for Division 1 target rifles with a score of 150 and 19 V-bulls. Deed, who was using a single-shot .308 target rifle with a Krieger barrel, said the hot, humid weather on the day had been “quite readable” and hadn’t interfered with his shooting. “Conditions weren’t over-hard all day,” he said. “The standard of competition was excellent – there were 46 other competitors

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

here today that were out to beat.” Deed’s club swept the competition, with CRC members winning all major division prizes. Deed himself admitted he was lucky a major competitor had been unable to take part in shooting on the day. “The bloke who won last year accidentally left half his gear in Townsville, so that was a stroke of luck for me,” he said. Mareeba Rifle Club captain Mark Beacham also said competition on the day had been excellent. “It’s been a very successful day, we’re very pleased with the turnout of 47 shooters,” he said. “The weather’s actually pretty mild by our standards for this time of year – the wind kept calm for most of the day and only started to get a bit choppy before we got to the 600-yard shoots, which was lucky. “Everyone shot high scores and everyone had a good time.”
