$500,000 free? Buy a CBD Exclusive By Ryan Groube for a lazy half a million dollars someone could become the owner of the majority of Dimbulah’s central business district. Sibi Girgenti Real Estate last week began exclusively marketing two titles on the corner of Raleigh Street and the Bourke Developmental Road. The corner block is 1581 square metres and includes 10 office blocks and a four bedroom home. Of the 10 office blocks, seven

have tenants including a bank, beautician and two butchers. The remaining three offices have recently been refurbished. Sibi Girgenti Real Estate principal Sam Girgenti said he had never seen such a large portion of a town’s CBD come up for sale. Mr Girgenti said the buyer could expect a net return of more than eight per cent on their investment. Real Estate Institute of Queensland Cairns chair, Greg Clyde-Smith said this kind of property coming on the market was “very unusual”.
Mr Clyde-Smith warned that just because a property comes on the market that is “pretty rare” it doesn’t guarantee that it will be sold. He pointed to the recent failure to sell the Shambala Animal Kingdom - a zoo at Koah, and the old Millaa Millaa cheese factory. “This is certainly an unusual one but at the end of the day buyers look for returns and the question they will be asking themselves is, ‘Where else can I get a return of eight per cent on my investment of $500,000?’,” he said.

“The thing about this property that makes it different from the other two is that they were showing no return while this is showing a return which makes the investment risk much, much less.” Mr Clyde-Smith said despite the return, buying the property would be a bit of a “punt”. “I think whoever takes this on will need to think outside the square about what they can do to bring in occupants,” he said. “Provided the buyer has a bit of imagination, there is a real opportunity to build something on it that would make a vibrant sort of street.

“There will be people out there who will be willing to take that kind of opportunity.” Mr Girgenti conceded the bargain basement price was a result of the town’s real estate market being “down in the dumps” but that it had always found a way to “fight back”. “My hope is that we will find a buyer with a bit of vision who would want to do something new and fresh,” he said. The property has been owned by the Armenti family since the early 1980s. Mareeba Express contacted the family for comment but they declined.

an organic garden, maintained by students, will stock Biboohra State School’s newly refurbished tuckshop. The tuckshop, re-opened on June 18 after about three months of construction, will be supplied organic fruit and vegetables grown by students in a garden set up in school grounds in 2012. The refurbishment cost $56,000, funded by the school’s P&C, the Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank and the State Government. The garden, built with recycled and donated materials, grows tomatoes, capsicum, eggplants, strawberries and other vegetables. The produce will be used in the tuckshop to make salads, fillings for hamburgers, mayonnaise and pesto. The garden is maintained by students, teachers and the school’s P&C. Surplus produce is sold back to the community. Principal Meryl Sonnenburg said the tuckshop and garden would provide both healthy eating and education for the students. “It’s really excellent – we have been trying to encourage healthy eating in the school and to show the kids that healthy foods also taste good,” she said. “At the same time, building and maintaining the garden has taught the students some very good life skills early on, like gardening, growing their own food and saving water. “It’s really great to see the community get be-

biology – a sort of silly example we had was when one of the younger students pointed at an early developing eggplant and asked ‘Miss, is this like the plant being born?’ “When the kids eat the veggies they’ve grown they really see the benefits of all the hard work, and to know they did it without really impacting on the environment is a big bonus.” Ms Earnst said that the school would look into other sustainability projects in the future, including the possibility of revegetating a nearby wetland on school grounds.

Avenue opens in honour of the fallen By Boyd Robertson Tears flowed freely as the honour roll of fallen soldiers from the campaign in Afghanistan was read at Australia’s newest war memorial. Thousands gathered on the shores of Lake Tinaroo on Saturday for the opening of the Avenue of Honour at Yungaburra. As part of the ceremony, the families of Australian soldiers killed in the 12-year conflict proceeded past a memorial wall bearing the names of the fallen. For a fleeting moment they were alone with the name inscribed there as the nation looked on. Among the 5000 who attended were Prime Minister Julia Gillard, opposition leader Tony Abbott, Chief of the Defence Force General David Hurley, Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith and the parents of slain commando Private Benjamin Chuck. Private Chuck was killed along with two comrades in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan’s Khandahar province as part of Operation Slipper. The Avenue follows the path of his casket during his funeral in 2010. Prior to the opening, Private Chuck’s parents, Gordon and Susan Chuck who were instrumental in the Avenue’s creation - reflected on the huge task of making the memorial a reality. Originally planned as a small-scale memorial for their son and his comrades, the Avenue caught the attention of the Federal Government and national media, and quickly expanded into a project of national significance. “I think our family feels an enormous amount of pride in what’s taken place in the last five months,” Mr Chuck said.
“The presence of the most senior political and military leaders is a testament to the importance the nation places on the creation of this living memorial. “Although it’s Afghan-specific, it’s probably more about the amazing spirit and courage of all who have served not only in Afghanistan but in conflicts over the years – it’s that undaunted spirit that we’re celebrating and saluting today.” Mrs Chuck said it had been a “highly emotional” week for her and her husband but that the support of others had helped with the pain. “So many people have shared their stories with us through emails and letters – the generosity and the donations that have come through, from primary schools up to a 94-year-old bomber pilot, have just been overwhelming,” she said. The opening ceremony began at 2pm with a skydiver trailing a huge Australian flag landing in a field adjacent to the Avenue of Honour. A series of speeches by civic and defence force leaders followed before the official unveiling and dedication of the memorial by General Hurley and Corporal Roberts-Smith. A flyover by three Blackhawk helicopters and the national anthem concluded the event. Prime Minister Gillard lauded the Chucks’ struggle to turn their pain into an inspiration for the nation. “Today we meet to open a remarkable national memorial and to honour the memory of 39 young Australians who died for us in a dangerous place far from home – in the deserts, spring valleys and mountains of Afghanistan,” she said. “Gordon and Susan, the fruit of

your grief could have easily become bitterness in your lives – instead you have created this memorial to all the sons lost in Afghanistan. “ Mr Abbot paid tribute the courage of Australian soldiers. “The difference between the members of our armed forces and everyone else is they have put their lives on the line to defend our country,” he said. “As someone who has never worn our country’s uniform, I salute all those who have – and as politicians we feel humbled, even embarrassed in the presence of those whom we have ordered into battle when we have faced no such dangers ourselves. “I say to the families of the fallen,
in whose hearts mingle grief and pride: you will never forget - we must never forget.” Decorated war hero Corporal Roberts-Smith delivered an unrehearsed speech about what motivated Australian soldiers. “It is a great to be here today to talk about my mates, some of whom are on that memorial,” he said. “What’s relevant in the context of this memorial is why we fight, why we serve this country – and it is quite simply because we love it, and we believe in what we’re doing because it’s the right thing to do.” Retired Army veteran Len Dixon said the memorial was “the best thing
we could have done for the fellas.” Mr Dixon retired as a Warrant Officer First Class after serving in the ADF for 34 years, including tours in Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam, and had made the trip up from Brisbane attend the opening with his brother Kelly, who lives in Millaa Millaa. “We don’t want them forgotten like some of us,” Mr Dixon said. “We can’t do enough for the young diggers – the council and the Chucks should be congratulated.” As the ceremony was taking place, news was filtering through about another Australian soldier being killed in Afghanistan. The death takes the number of lives lost in the war to 40.

The Mareeba Express is proud to announce it will be expanding, undergoing a redesign as well as a rebrand from next week. From July 3, The Express will be home delivered to the residents of Atherton - the only far northern newspaper to do so in both the region’s major towns. Almost 3000 copies will be delivered to letter boxes, folded not wrapped, by PNP distribution. For residents outside the township, more copies of The Express will be available from more outlets with Athertonbased Leavis Transport coming on board as the paper’s delivery contractor. The additional copies mark a 30 per cent increase in the paper’s distribution from 10,000 copies to 13,000. As part of changes, the newspaper will be rebranded as The Express. The change reflects the regional commitment that this newspaper has to the far north. The Express managing editor Carl Portella said the expansion was part of the newspaper’s business plan since its inception in April 2010. “This wouldn’t have been possible without the extraordinary support this newspaper has received from Mareeba and surrounding communities since we began,” Mr Portella said. “I would like to be very clear. We are not moving anywhere. The newspaper will continue to be based and operated from our Mareeba office. “The issues that are covered in The Express each week are regional issues. They are not confined to one town or area.
“We are looking forward to having more towns and communities play an active role with our newspaper.” The Express is also happy to announce that Robert Niceforo has joined the paper as an advertising representative to service the southern Tableland. For readers, the redesign will bring back some old favourites from the early days, including Express-o. The Express-o page will include games, a weather forecast, horoscopes, recipes and an exclusive weekly cartoon from The Express journalist Boyd Robertson. A new addition will be a weekly editorial feature page - The Land. The page will include market reports for the beef, sugar and banana industries as well as weekly stories reflecting the importance of the agricultural industry on the Tableland. In addition, The Express has offered free weekly columns to service clubs on the southern Tableland. The Atherton and Malanda Lions clubs and Atherton Rotary Club have already signed on to participate. The columns allow these invaluable community organisations to keep readers abreast of the many and numerous activities they hold throughout the year. While most of the changes will be aesthetic, the paper will continue to offer competitive advertising, friendly service and quality journalism. The newspapers Facebook page has already been altered to The Express Newspaper and a new web address, www. theexpressnewspaper.com.au, will go live on July 1.

‘Teething issues’ plague cane crush By Ryan Groube fears that thousands of tonnes of cane will be left stranded on farmer’s paddocks have arisen after a disastrous start to the 2013 cane crush. A series of delays stemming from a $42 million upgrade of the Tableland Mill has plagued the opening three weeks of the crush. As a result, MSF Sugar has been forced to revise its completion date from mid-November to November 26. The crush was due to start on May 28 but a stateof-the-art computer system, installed as part of the upgrade, failed delaying the crush by eight days. Further delays have been experienced after a mud filter failed on June 17 and cane fibres (begasse chokes) clogged conveyor belts, putting the mill two weeks behind schedule. Tableland Mill’s general manager Phil Miskin has down played the impact of the delays and said he was confident of getting this year’s crop off before the wet season hits. “We have just had a major upgrade of this plant and we are working through some teething issues and we are making
progress,” he said. “We are expecting to be finished later in November as a result of the later start and the reduced throughput to date but we are still on track to finish earlier than we did last year. “At this stage, not getting the crop off is something that isn’t on our minds.” Mareeba Express understands that representatives of MSF will meet with Tableland Canegrowers on June 28 to reassure farmers that their crops won’t be left stranded. Tableland Canegrowers manager Bronwyn Dwyer said while the delays were frustrating, MSF Sugar weren’t to blame. “This is not the mill trying to stall our season. They have had genuine issues that they never would have imagined they would have,” she said. “We have got ourselves in a situation where we need to work with them to find an outcome should there be any more delays.” Ms Dwyer said MSF Sugar’s expected completion date was based on the assumption it would crush at 210 tonnes an hour. Since beginning on June 5, the Tableland Mill has been crushing at about 180 tonnes an hour.
MSF’s preliminary estimates show the 2013 crop should come in at about 780,000 tonnes, slightly higher than last season as a result of an additional 500 hectares of cane production area coming online. Tableland Canegrowers suspects MSF have underestimated the size of the crop. Tableland Canegrowers suspect the crop is more likely to come in at 800,000 tonnes. “Given the crop is larger than last year and that at this stage we are unsure if they will be able to continue to crush at this rate [210 tonnes an hour] for the rest of the season the danger
is that they could still be crushing into the second week of December,” Ms Dwyer said. “Worst case is that if we get an early wet we simply won’t be able to get all of our cane off. “If this happens anything that is cut in the last round simply won’t be productive and may have to be ploughed out.” Mr Miskin said the 2013 crop was only marginally larger than last year’s and that once the mill reached its peak crushing capacity it would be able to process cane quicker. “Once we get things operating smoothly the crushing rate will increase,” he said.
Mr Miskin said the mill plans to bring its new “back end” or crystallisation plant online in the next five to six weeks. The commissioning of the back end can happen “independent of crushing.” Mr Miskin also urged motorists to take care on the road. “I would just remind people that the season has started and cane trucks will be appearing across the region and ask people to be mindful of the increased level of traffic,” he said. Should the crop get off in time, it is looking like a good season for farmers with the CCS (a measure of recoverable sugar in the cane) hovering just above 13.

Jim McConnachie has become a national woodturning champion for the fourth year in succession. The local woodturner now turns his focus to local competitions at the 51st Mareeba Art Exhibition, run from July 8 to 13 at the PYCY sports hall, before entering the Bendigo Bank Mareeba Agricultural Show, run as part of the rodeo. Agricultural show organisers have overhauled the competition in 2013 to ensure the everyday punter stands a chance of winning a category against the likes of Mr McConnachie. Chief steward of the agricultural show Cindy Paton said each division would be broken into two categories professional and hobby. The show includes eight broad categories: photography, home economics, sewing, craft, woodwork, horticulture, flowers, pots and plants and sugar cane. Each of the categories has a number of sub-categories. Ms Paton said anyone exhibiting this year would be placed in the professional division if they have an Australian Business Number and earned money as a result of selling what they exhibited. “The whole idea of doing this is to keep it fair for everyone,” she said. “The standard of entries we get at the show is fantastic and we don’t want to lose that. By breaking the categories into two we allow the professionals to showcase what they do without excluding people who do these things for a bit of fun. “This competition is all about showcasing what people can do.” Mr McConnachie said he supported the change and hoped that in the coming years people would move up from the hobby division and “try to knock me off”. “Sometimes when I exhibit out there at the rodeo I feel a bit guilty,” he said. “I remember when I first started entering [competitions] I didn’t always win and one day I got to a stage I

was like ‘stuff this, I am going to improve’.” Mr McConnachie has just returned from The Australian Woodturning Exhibition. Held in Melbourne from June 14 to 16, the event is the premier competition for woodturners in Australia. Mr McConnachie entered the segmented section of the competition with a 310 millimetre round and 140 millimetre high bowl inspired by the skating centre from the movie Xanadu as well as an Indian pottery website. The bowl is made up of about 450 individual pieces of timber and took him six weeks to make. Timber used in the bowl includes: cedar, silky oak, black walnut, maple and white beach. A panel of three judges assess the bowl independently with their scores added together for a maximum of 240 points. Entries are judged on their design, shape, finish, degree of difficulty and the use of appropriate timber. Mr McConnachie is yet to recieve his final scorecard.

COACHES HELP MAREEBA HIGH STUDENTS SHINE OVER the past three years seven of our students have achieved the ultimate score of an Overall Placements (OP) 1. Across the board our students National Assessment Plan – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) scores have improved in all five areas. This improvement is largely due to the coaching support our teachers receive when delivering the ‘I do (teacher demonstrates), we do (class participates), you do (individual student does activity)’ method. We call this method ‘explicit teaching’. My teachers are like elite athletes. Everybody knows how to run, but few of us can run well enough to compete at a State or National level. Those who do, spend many hours honing aspects of their running technique. An improved starting block technique or arm position can be the difference between running a new personal best (PB) or falling behind. Elite athletes have coaches. The coach isn’t necessarily the best athlete but they are skilled at assisting other athletes achieve their best through feedback and practice. This is what keeps athletes at the top of their game. At Mareeba State High School we know what consti-
tutes good teaching practice that is grounded in research. With the help of coaches our teachers are better equipped to identify their areas for improvement and implement positive changes – this ultimately results in better outcomes for students. Our coaches are usually a Head of Department (HOD). The HODs have been trained how to coach effectively, observing and giving feedback to teachers. Like athletes, our teaching team is improving and it is showing in our results. My teaching team is committed to high expectations and continuous improvement. I am proud of what has been achieved at Mareeba State High School through coaching and hard work. I am proud not only of our OP1 students, but also that 95 per cent of our students wanting to pursue a university pathway secured a placement. I am also proud that over 80 per cent of our OP students achieved scores between 1-15. For more information about Mareeba State High School see www.mareebashs. eq.edu.au

Recently four of our students were selected to participate in the State Honours Ensemble Programme (SHEP) run by Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Students selected for SHEP include: Katelyn Dickinson (Clarinet), Levi Lilly (Percussion) and Tara Nowell (Clarinet). Lauren Searle was also selected for Voice. Unfortunately Voice workshops will not be conducted in Cairns this time. To be selected for SHEP (Middle School) students need to be outstanding young musicians and nominated by their Instrumental Music teacher. Students are challenged musically to extend their abilities and benefit from the expert tuition of international conductors.
GALLERY OPENING
Last week the opening night for the exhibition, "Part of the Process", was held at the gallery "A Beautiful Space" in Cairns. It was the first art exhibition for Reece Ashford, Belinda Grundling, Maggie Greene and Jessie Lea. All four students were selected to showcase their work. On the night Mareeba was well represented and it was a pleasure to spend time with all of the Mareeba families who attended. Please congratulate our students on their hard work and being excellent ambassadors for our school.

Dino’s Europa Deli set to go national By Boyd Robertson A Mareeba deli will appear on national television after being filmed for a segment on the Queensland Weekender program last week. A crew from the Seven Network community program visited Dino’s Europa Deli in Byrnes Street on June 19 and filmed an interview with owner Angelina Della Bosca. The piece will form part of Queensland Weekender’s exploration of far north Queensland’s cultural heritage on their way to the Laura Dance Festival held at the weekend. The crew took a look at the region’s Italian heritage – with a particular focus on food – through Ms Della Bosca’s deli and her brother Joe Bianco’s farm at Shanty Creek Road.
Ms Della Bosca, who has owned the business for 21 years, said she was “nervous” ahead of the interview but was happy she had been nominated by a friend, predicting the exposure would be a boon for her business. “It’s great to get the recognition – a lot of my business is people passing through from outside of town so this will help with that,” she said. “I have people walk into the store and say ‘We’re from Melbourne, our friend has been here before and recommended you, so here we are’.” “I think the interview went well, but I would have liked to have known some of the questions beforehand so I could have answered them a bit better. The deli owner said the best glimpse into a culture was through its food. “I think it’s a good idea to keep the Ital-
ian heritage of Mareeba going – Australians like Italian food, most of them have grown up with it and it helps provide that sense of local community.” After Mareeba, the crew headed to Cooktown to explore that town’s European and Chinese heritage with the aid of local historian Bev Shay before moving on to Laura for insight into northern Queensland Aboriginal culture and customs. Ms Della Bosca offers meats, cheese, spices, seasoning, olives and much more at her deli, and gets much of it locally. “Some of the stuff I don’t even have to source,” she said. “People just bring it in vegetables and other things they’ve grown at home and give it to us.” The program is expected to go to air across Queensland in August, with a national to follow the state broadcast the Dino’s Europa Deli owner Angelina Della Bosca chats with Queensland Weekender presenter Victoria Carthew week after.
Inventors give back Award-winning inventors Damien and Cindy Farrell, of Kidston Canvas, have donated the proceeds from their recent win at the Rotary FNQ Field Days to Malanda Ozcare. Fresh from taking out two major categories at the Rotary FNQ Field Days inventors competition, Kidston Canvas decided to repay the aged care facility for its help in presenting one of their awardwinners, the Cow Jack, at the competition. The home loaned a brightly coloured cow mannequin to Kidston Canvas to support the display of the Cow Jack. In return, Kidston Canvas donated the $500 cash prize to the home. The Cow Jack is an inflatable PVC vinyl welded bag used for raising animals into a standing position. “Living in the gulf, the majority of our customers are cattle stations who are facing a very tough year of drought,” Mr Farrell said.. “A grazier approached me to come up with a better option than slings, tractors and hip clamps. “This is the better option for animals, graziers and herd productivity - and its simple to use.” The Cow Jack is used when an animal becomes sick, injured or bogged. The bag is inflated via a pipe connected to the exhaust of a motor vehicle. Field tests have shown that is takes approximately three minutes to raise a beast into a standing position using the Cow Jack. The health of the animal is able to be monitored while being supported by the bag. Part of their prize entitles Kidston Canvas entry into the inventors competition at the Australian National Fields Days in October. TGT has recently agreed to stock the Cow Jack.

Council fires up over new State levy By Boyd Robertson The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is furious about being forced to act as tax collectors for a new State Government fire levy. The Government wrote to local councils this month informing them that the existing Urban Fire Levy will be recast into the Emergency Management Fire and Rescue Levy, which contains a series of increased costs. Legislation supporting the change will come into effect on July 1, and will immediately result in a 3.5 per cent fire levy increase for urban residents. A further increase of 6.5 per cent for urban residents will follow on January 1, 2014. In addition, rural residents, many of whom already pay levies to rural fire brigades, will be slugged an additional $90. Local councils will collect the levy through rates. Funds raised will go directly to State Government coffers, supposedly to be invested in fire fighting equipment and programs such as water bombers. A spokesperson for Minister for Police and Community Safety Jack Dempsey defended the increases. “After five years of disasters costing billions of dollars, all Queenslanders are being asked to contribute to emergency manage-
ment hence the broadening and renaming of the Urban Fire Levy,” the spokesperson said.“The funds will be used to place Emergency Management on a sustainable funding course that ensures we are able to deliver the same and enhanced services into the future.” The announcement has angered TRC councillors, who slammed the new levy at the June 20 meeting. Councillor Marjorie Pagani described the move as “robbing Peter to pay Paul”. Cr Pagani said once this bill started to appear on resident’s rate notices council could expect a blowback. “This is, essentially, by subterfuge, another tax by the government and the blame for it will fall on council,” she said. “It is my view that the money we collect will be sent to Brisbane will not be distributed fairly back to us.” The views of Cr Pagani were echoed across the chamber. “It appears on our rates notice, so we’re the bad guys in the eyes of residents,” Cr Evan McGrath said. Cr Gaye Taylor agreed, questioning the legality of the move. “We send out rates notices so we can supply services to our ratepayers, not everyone else,” she said. “Are we actually able to charge a tax for the government? “When does it end?” Councillor Jenny Jensen said rural firies were worried about back-
Xmas comes early LONG or short, glittering or more homely, big or small - Christmas in July in Mareeba attracts motor-homes and campervans of all shapes and sizes. This year the popular annual event is shaping up to break all records, Mayor Rosa Lee Long said. “Last year set an attendance record of 352 vans and motor-homes and this year I am advised organisers are looking to crack the 400 mark,” she said. “This will be an amazing sight, and an achievement that speaks volumes about both the great effort put in by the organisers, and the appeal of this part of
the world, especially at this time of the year.” Christmas in July is hosted by the Far North Nomads Chapter of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia and the TRC. This year’s celebrations will take place at Davies Park, Mareeba from July 25 to 28. “Sunday, 28 July is the big public open day,” Cr Lee Long said. The open day will run from 9am3pm with a gold coin donation at entry. Proceeds from the gate will be donated to the Mareeba SES, and the fund for maintaining the Avenue of Honour.

lash from ratepayers over the levy. “The rural brigades have major concerns that they will be seen as double-dipping,” she said. Mayor Rosa Lee Long, however, was more pragmatic, admitting council’s hands were tied. “The State Government is our boss – if they say we have to do it, we have to do it,” she said. Council resolved to contact the Local Government Association of Queensland to begin collective lobbying against the levy.

Borzi backer gets off the mouse wheel In reply to Helen Tunnah (Mareeba Express June 19, page four). I’m afraid Helen the first part of your letter confuses me. The bit about the mouse wheel, cage, and me patting myself on the back must have come from a fairy tale book. For your information, I was one of the first to know that the group of de-amalgamation proponents had been disbanded. In fact, I voted in favour of it as “The Group” had done their job and that was it. Anything I have written since then is entirely on my own behalf. One thing you are right about Helen is the fact that I have been thinking about a candidate to run the show. Now I don’t know how many will stand for the position of Mayor but I will be giving my sup-

port to one only, and that one person is former MSC Mayor Mick Borzi. Mick to my knowledge is the only one that has a true and proven track record of running this Mareeba Shire Council successfully, he’s done it before and he has said he can do it again. I’m sure he is needed for the next couple of years to get the reborn MSC back to what it was. Now I suppose I have to get back on to my “mouse- wheel”. “Squeak”. Ron Kane Mareeba Bullied and treated like a fool an advertisement by Member for Barron River Michael Trout in the Cairns Sun reads: “... (Queensland) economy is benefitting for policies that allow small businesses to thrive, farmers to produce,
tourist numbers to grow, low income earners to be housed, our disabled and sick to be looked after properly and better education for our kids.” My dollar is continually eroded by the ever rising cost of electricity, insurance, vehicle registration, stamp duty, fire levy and council rates. Mr Trout, why am I, who has a take home pay of $450 a week, being subjected to an increase in my rent because rates are to rise unnecessarily while you politicians give yourselves a $1000 a week pay increase? Rates are definitely going to increase. A lot more than projected by the proponents of de-amalgamation. In the Mareeba Express (May 12, page four) Ross Cardillo said we will have to pay the council rates as stated by Treasury prior to the poll. Member for Cook David Kempton was quoted in the Mareeba Express on June 12: “We all need
to work together to keep the de-amalgamation cost as low as possible to minimise the impact on ratepayers across the region”. Mr Trout if you can change the law to allow council to change rates to suit itself, why don’t you change the law and deny yourself a $1000 a week pay rise? I am 59 and have worked hard to rehabilitate myself so I don’t draw a disability pension so as to pay my way. In return, you and your government treat me, and other hard working Australians, as fools. The de-amalgamation poll was cast on misleading information and innuendo. No wonder bullying is such a big problem when our Government sets such an example. Greg Wheeler Kuranda

Rotary helps hospital project One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.
What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.
Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.
MAREEBA Rotary donated $11,500 to the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation on Tuesday June 18. The money was raised by Mareeba Rotary’s two teams in the 2013 Great Wheelbarrow Race. Pictured above is Maree Lopez from Mareeba Rotary presenting the cheque to Stephen Gear from the MFOHF with representatives from the hospital. The money will go towards a new project to build a playground at the Mareeba Hospital. The Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation raises money for improvements at the Mareeba Hospital – all money raised stays in Mareeba for projects that will benefit the entire community. More money and services are needed to get this project underway. If you would like to donate or provide services for the project or to volunteer for the MFOHF, please contact Ida Portella on 0439 545 433.

Army invades Mareeba
By Boyd Robertson Mareeba Turf Club was transformed into an army base on June 21 as members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) conducted a training exercise. Helicopters, armoured vehicles and troops in full combat gear and weapons (loaded with blanks) swarmed around the Turf Club between 10am and 3pm. The exercise was part of a series of training manoeuvres dubbed ‘ATG Block 2’. It included scenarios at Atherton, Tully, Innisfail and Cowley Beach. The purpose was to practice the Amphibious Ready Element (ARE) of 2RAR. Mareeba and Atherton were chosen as exercise sites due to their inland locations. For the exercise, Mareeba was cast as a town in the war-torn nation of Tropicana Enclave. Paramilitary fighters called the IPF were ravaging the countryside and the Tropicanian government had allowed the ADF to evacuate Australian citizens (played by off-duty military personnel).
To accomplish the task, the ARE made an amphibious landing at Cowley Beach from the troopship HMAS Choules. Units then travelled to Mareeba, establishing a perimeter around the Mareeba Turf Club, which served as landing zone for Blackhawks. Civilians were screened by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade personnel before being escorted to a handling centre in Innisfail by Blackhawk helicopters. Throughout the exercise, the ARE was forced to adapt to changing conditions such as vehicles approaching the checkpoints at speed and evacuees reporting sexual assault. Overseeing the exercise was Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Cuttell from the Combat Training Centre in Townsville. Lieutenant Colonel Cuttell said the excercise had been a success and he hoped to do it again next year. “This type of training will most likely be annual we’ll certainly be looking next year to come back to the Tableland for more exercises,” he said.
Get to the chopper: Australian troops escort roleplaying civilians to an evacuation helicopter during a training exercise at Mareeba Turf Club on June 21. An extended version of this story, as well as photos and videos, will be uploaded to the Mareeba Express Facebook page and website.
STRAIGHT TALKING with Tablelands Regional Council MayoR Rosa Lee Long
1. In it’s Budget Speech on 4 June 2013, the Queensland Government announced a new and additional Levy to be called the Emergency Management Fire and Rescue Levy, to be collected through Council Rates notices. Essentially, this takes the existing compulsory Urban Fire Levy, already charged through Council rates notices and applies it to all rateable properties in Queensland. It is not expected that any funding generated by this new and additional levy will go directly to Rural Fire Brigades. This has caused great concern for this volunteer group, who fear that once people are forced to pay this compulsory charge, they will be less likely to contribute directly to these volunteer brigades, which rely heavily on this direct community support. The State has legislated to make Councils the collector of this new levy as part of our Rates notices. This means we will have no choice about it unless the State Government changes its mind. Should ratepayers refuse to pay the levy their Rates will be considered unpaid. This would result in disqualification from any discounts and eventually, may attract penalties. Council is lobbying the State Government to have this situation addressed and continues to support our Rural Fire Brigades who provide such a vital service. 2. The process of de-amalgamating the Tablelands Regional Council is now well underway. The Structure for the new Tablelands Regional Council has been adopted and a draft Structure for the new Mareeba Shire Council has also been released.
www.mareebaexpress.com
It is hoped that staff positions will be finalised within the next few months. Tablelands Regional Council CEO Ian Church is currently working with Mareeba Shire Council Transfer Manager Rod Ferguson on the division of assets and liabilities, etc. 3. Councillors and Staff are now working through almost 2000 submissions made to the draft Tablelands Regional Council Planning Scheme. They are taking note of every submission and assessing the massive amount of information that has come forward from the community. This process is expected to take some months. 4. Economics have forced Council to stop sending glass waste away for recycling. This is something we will review if and when the price paid for glass improves. In the interim, residents can continue to place glass in recycling bins as it will assist Council staff in sorting and handling it at our waste transfer stations. 5. The new Malanda Visitors Information Centre is now very close to opening. The project to replace the burnt-down original facility has progressed well and I am sure the volunteers who have done such a great job from temporary accommodation will be looking forward to moving in-to their impressive new home.

In the spotlight A former FNQ Bulls star and Mareeba United Football Club junior has attracted national attention and praise as one of Australia’s top soccer talents. Jamie Carroll, who now plays for FNQ FC Heat in the National Premier League as a forward, has been labelled as one of the country’s top eight players outside the A-League in the latest edition of renowned football magazine ‘Four Four Two’. Carroll’s speed, dribbling skills and vision are highlighted in the feature which has been a regular favourite amongst Australian football fans and a barometer for state-based talent, previously bringing to attention the likes of current Socceroos star Tommy Oar. Football Queensland Technical Director, Gary Phillips is quoted: “Jamie Carroll has unique qualities rarely found in this country....he can beat defenders with pace or through deception. He is clever and always a threat with the ball at his feet and this is demonstrated by his ability to score goals.” “If he was given an opportunity at a higher level, on a consistent basis his raw talent could be nurtured and polished further. “Given he has a full-time job and
trains only part time, his potential is far from fulfilled.” Heat Interim Coach, Joe Fenech also sees great promise. “Jamie is a talent at this level of football, and had he been assisted as a 16-year -old he may well have played A-League,” he said. “Naturally, the club and I would be delighted were Jamie to make that step up.” Mr Fenech said at A-League level, Jamie would have to be ‘re-conditioned’ in terms of discipline when it came to adhering to a match plan. “At NPL level he naturally wants to do everything on the park to help his team mates but at A-League level he would need to accept that he was a small fish in a big pond. “I think it would do Jamie a world of good to get an opportunity to train with an A-League club and experience what it takes to be a professional.” Carroll is enjoying an incredible season in the National Premier League. He has already scored five goals this season including a hat trick against QAS in Round 9. ‘Four Four Two’ is available in most newsagents and magazine stockists.
INSURANCE TALK with Ross Cardillo of Ross Cardillo Financial Services
Be aware of insurance hikes AUSTRALIAN Super is increasing Life Insurance and Total and Permanent Disablement premiums by some 38% and Income Protection premiums will increase by 25%. Rest is also increasing the cost of it’s Death Cover by 45% with TPD increasing by 30% and Income Protection increasing by 3%.
These are substantial increases by these leading Industry Superannuation Fund providers. “I believe that Industry Funds provide the bare necessities for an employee and you are in a much better position having and owning your own Personal Superannuation Plan that can be tailored to include the levels of Insurance and Income Protection that you require,” said Mr Cardillo. “An issue I have uncovered recently with Rest is that cover ceases when the fund is no longer receiving payments”. I had a case recently, where a young man came to me for assistance to claim life insurance on his father’s superannuation through
the Rest Plan. The young man had actually given up and was pointed in my direction, after hours and hours and hours of negotiation with the Rest Representative, we were informed that the cover was $250,000 for Death and Total and Permanent Disablement with a cash value of $8,000. Meaning that, the total payment should have been $258,000. However, as this young man’s father had become ill when he contracted the disease he was no longer able to work, therefore contributions to his superannuation plan ceased. Consequently, the Rest cover ceased and the result was rather than receiving $258,000 as compensation from his father’s death. from the Rest Superannuation Plan the young man received the grand total of $8,000 from the Employer Sponsored Rest Superannuation Plan. “Quite simply, that does not happen if you have a Personal Superannuation Plan and an Adviser that is providing regular reviews and advice to you,” said Mr Cardillo.

Science is beginning to demonstrate why selfless acts are so good for us. It has been demonstrated that when people volunteer or donate to charity, their brains register pleasure and reward. These are the very same areas of the brain that light up when you eat your favourite food, kiss a lover or win a race. At Care Chiropractic Queensland, we are responsible for looking after the health of our community not just at an individual level, but on a larger scale. At least once a month all of our clinics run free health seminars, workplace safety classes, or charity events such as the Ambrose Golf Day for the Mareeba Hospital Foundation. Through the support of our patients, we have recently donated 107kg of clothing to Papua New Guinea. So maybe nice guys don’t always finish last. Selflessness can enhance our lives in multiple areas such as health, romance and finances. Here’s why: • It’s good for your health - The same feel good chemicals that are released when you do a good deed are also naturally occurring painkillers and promote healing. • It’s good for your bottom line - Altruists may reap unexpected financial benefits because other will feel compelled to reward their kindness. • It’s good for those with addictions – getting involved in the community has been shown to significantly reduce relapse rates amongst both adolescents and adults. • It promotes social connection – when we give to others, they feel closer to us and we feel closer to them. So how can you, your business or family help? There are a number of ways you can start reaping the benefits of giving. • Connect with like-minded groups – people are much more likely to help members of their own group. Examples include liking the same sport, hobby or social service groups such as Rotary. • Give thanks – grateful people are more generous. • Lead by example – great leaders inspire other to follow, not simply getting people to do what they want. • Get time on your side – individuals are much more likely to help someone in need if they believe they have the time to do so. • Fight inequality – wether it is in the workplace, home or schoolroom. We aren’t born with prejudice, it’s something you learn. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead.

Basketball champs crowned Lights go out The much anticipated clash between the Bulls and Dragons faded out in the sunset on Saturday night. Power troubles at Cassowary Park saw the Reserve Grade and A Grade matches cancelled. Midway through the reserve grade match a bank of lights went out. The game continued until the 60th minute before officials decided to abandon the match with the score locked at 0-0. Ergon Energy and electricians thought they had fixed the problem and delayed the Premier league match to 7.30pm. The Bulls had completed their pre-match warm up and were just about to head out before the same bank of lights failed again. Match officials gave Douglas a further 15 minutes to find the solution, but with no lights turning on after the 7.45pm mark, the match was abandoned. The match will be replayed with a date yet to be confirmed. The Bulls now turn their attention towards the Southside Fury who will travel to Borzi Park on Sunday.
By Silvano Ruggeri Mareeba Basketball Association president Semi-Pros and Baida Steggles, pictured, have taken out the respective men’s and women’s grand finals of the Mareeba Basketball Association’s winter season last week. Runners-up last season, Semi-Pros were determined to go one better this season. After an even first stanza against grand final opponents the Stingrays, Semi-Pros took control in the second half to run away with the final 35-22. The Semi-Pros were led by a superb performance by Garret Perks who scored 24 points. Mizhar Saba and Clinton Cameron also starred for the Semi-Pros. In a losing side, David Hawke led the way with 18 points. Poor shooting from the field cost the Stingrays. Other than Hawke only two players scored baskets. Baida Steggles won consecutive women’s championships with a convincing win over Locals. Locals started well trailing by a manageable nine points at the break before being overwhelmed. Tua Aue scored at will, finishing with 26 points and received ample support from Mar Hagger who registered 11 points. The Locals were best served by Deidre Brumby with nine points to go with a strong showing on the glass, while Jacquie Brumby also played well in the losing side. Trophys and medals were presented to the Senior Men and Ladies teams by Tito Srhoj. The Under 16s Junior Grand Final saw the
Phoenix triumph over G-Force 38-16. Daniel Ruggeri led the way with 19 points for the Phoenix while Brooke Mahmut score eight points. Omar Myrteza was the top scorer for G-Force with six. The Eagles soared to the Under 14s championship with a 29-20 win over the Kangaroos. Brothers Indigo and Bunie Vickery-Carllew together with Rhys Cooper played well for Eagles. Kangaroos played well below their usual standard. Leaving only Jonah Hastie as their shining light with 16 points for the match. Mareeba State High School principal, Jo Soothill presented medals to the Under 14s and 16s. The closest contest of the finals came in the Under 12s with the Dragons prevailing 18-14
‘Gators slide in overtime over the Taipans. Eryk Legaspi scored 13 points for the Dragons. Toby Kennedy was best for the Taipans with 10 points. Mareeba Basketball now takes a short break. A sign on day for the summer season will be held on July 17 and 18 at Mareeba State High School from 5 to 6.30pm on both days.
the Mareeba Gladiators have lost their third game in a row after succumbing 42-12 against Innisfail at the weekend. The Reserves won 26-16 with Glen Williams scoring a double. Innisfail were too good in the Under 18s game, running away with a 58-14 win. The ‘Gators return home this weekend hoping to arrest a worrying slump against competition high flyers Cairns Brothers.
Sharks pip Crocs at sports carnival Leichhardt has narrowly edged out Gregory in Mareeba State High School’s end-ofterm sports carnival, ending the day with a final score of 1264 points. Gregory was just 28 points behind on 1236 points, with McKinley and Kennedy not far behind either on 1201 and 1158 points, respectively. Gregory managed to nab the Boys Trophy with 672 points, while Leichhardt’s ladies proved superior, taking out the Girls trophy on 670 points. Age champions were Kirsten Falvo and Baedyn McClelland in the Open category,
Tjana Furnari-Southam and Brandon Volp in 16 Years. Kayla McCarthy, Austin Pell and Paul Poynter shared the 15 Years Age Champion title, with Bekki Furnari-Southam and Naaman Eustace in 14 Years. Lily Warusam and Mitchell Green were the young talent, taking out Age Champion for 13 Years. Leichhardt sports captain Kate Muirarchi thanked her house for their efforts. “We’re so proud, everyone came through and participated, even things they didn’t usually like to do,” she said.
MSHS Head of Maths Department and Cross-country Convenor Terry McClelland said the day had been a great success and that Leichhardt owed their victory to teamwork and participation. “If you look at the results, Leichhardt did not win a relay,” he said. “It was participation and a great team effort that got them this win – and it was very close. “It was a great sports day overall, especially great because it was the first on the new oval – we’ve had rave reviews about the running surface so it’s all great.”

Tight finals a fixture
Mareeba Tennis Club night fixtures champions, top left, Group One Carl’s Cougars, Scott Macleod, Carl Brown, Charlie Martens, Geoff Dickenson and Hongyu Feng, top right, Group Two Neale’s Nighthawks, Max Turner, Lindsay Gillman, Neale Searle and Duane Aldersea, bottom left, Group Three Pauline’s Pythons, Pauline Brown, Darrell Turner, Val Ahgum and Hannah Simpson, bottom right, Group Four Toni’s Tigers, Tanya Croucher, Ann Wareing, Toni Barnwell, Jess Sexton
By Ryan Groube Carl’s Cougars have come from the clouds to claim the Group One championship as the Mareeba Tennis Club held the finals of its night fixtures competition on June 20. The week prior to the semi-finals the Cougars were no certainty of qualifying. Only a last-ditch victory over their grand final opponents, Casey’s Cobras, secured their place in the knockout stage. In the night fixtures competition, each team has four players ranked one through four. In a round-robin format each team member plays a doubles match with a different team mate. In all, 56 games are played. The team with the highest cumulative game score at the end of the night is crowned champions. The Group One final between the Cougars and the Cobras was a scrappy, hard-fought affair with the Cougars leading by one game heading into the final service game of the match. Cougars four, Hongyu Feng, had the responsibility of serving to win the championship.
After nervously dumping a forehand into the bottom of the net on the first point, Cougars captain Carl Brown put away three volleys to set up match point at 40-15. Another unforced error kept the Cobras in the final before Brown knived the winning volley. Feng was named Group One’s best and fairest. Brown said “it got a bit shaky” at the end but congratulated his team and grand final opponents. “We were down and out half way through the season so it was a real good effort from everyone for us to have got this tonight,” Brown said. The final also marked the final night fixtures season for Cobras captain and Mareeba junior Casey Herbohn who is moving to Townsville for university. Group Two saw two old warhorses of the club Neale Searle and Kim Peckham lead their teams, the Nighthawks and Koalas respectively, into battle. In another tense final, the Nighthawks just did enough to see off the Koalas winning by four games. Searle couldn’t help giving his
old mate Peckham a bit of stick during the presentation and said his team had done well to pull it together for the semis and final. “For two weeks in a row we didn’t play like crap like we did for the rest of the season,” he said. Mathew Palmer was named best and fairest in the group. The final of Group Three saw the biggest margin of the night but was still a tight contest between Pauline’s Pythons and Garry’s Gators. In the end, the Pythons proved two strong winning by six games. Jayne Hogarth was named best and fairest in Group Three. In the final of Group Four, Toni’s Tigers were too good for Stacey’s Spiders, winning by four games. Jess Sexton was named best and fairest in the group. Players only have a brief break before the second night season gets underway. Sign on and grading nights will be held on June 27 and July 3, weather permitting. Draws for the season will be available from July 11 with the first matches to be held on July 17 and 18.
