unWater has slammed reports that Tableland ratepayers will face an 860 per cent increase in the cost of raw water, saying a decision hasn’t been made. A spokesperson from the State-owned bulk water supplier said the claims made by the Mareeba and Tablelands councils were “incorrect”. “No decisions on future price increases have been determined,” the spokesperson said. “SunWater has advised Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) that it will increase prices for the 2014/15 financial year from current levels by CPI (Consumer Price Index) only.” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore has hit back saying

SunWater has provided black and white figures in a review foreshadowing huge price increases. In December 2012, SunWater wrote to the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) following a review of non irrigation water prices. The findings showed that the cost of water would increase from $58.73 a mega litre to $563.54. The review was conducted using Queensland Competition Authority methodology but SunWater has the power to set prices that differ from those in the review. The letter to the TRC read: “... the review has resulted in significant increases to the calculated price, and it is clear that SunWater and Council will need to liaise closely to determine appropriate phase-in or other arrangements to avoid po-

tential price shocks to ratepayers, or immediate budget difficulties for Council.” Mr Gilmore said SunWater “hasn’t at any time told me that the 860 per cent increase was off the table and until they say that to me I will continue to pursue this matter”. “They [SunWater] have thrown a dead cat on the table and either way you look at it it is ugly.” The Mayor has written to State Water Minister Mark McArdle and Queensland Treasurer Tim Nicholls to voice his concerns about the review’s findings. At the March 19 meeting of the MSC, Council allocated about $9,000 to undertake exploratory drilling at three potential bore field locations across the Shire. Council have been scrambling to find ways to

supplement water supplies in Mareeba, Kuranda and Dimbulah, fearing the possible price hikes. Department of Natural Resources officers have advised council to drill in alluvial areas close to the region’s water plants to determine if there is a suitable subterranean supply. The cost of the drilling is about $3000 for each of the three sites with the contractor to provide Council with an expected bore water flow report. SunWater has a bulk water supply contract with Mareeba Shire Council covering 5760 mega litres of high priority water allocations. Prices for high priority supplies are reviewed annually, with major reviews occurring approximately every five years, in line with the Queensland Competition Authority water pricing review.

A stand against bullies By Boyd Robertson

Students at Atherton State High School (ASHS) have taken a stand against bullying as part of a national day against abusive behaviour. More than 200 ASHS students signed a large board on March 21, in addition to coming to school wearing orange for National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. The board reads ‘We, the students of Atherton State High School pledge to put an end to bullying and violence.’ The free-dress day came at the cost of a gold coin donation from each student, which was passed onto the ‘Bullying: No Way!’ campaign, the country-wide education organisation behind the National Day of Action. One of the organisers of the signing was Year 11 student Georgia Whybird, 15, who said response to the event was overwhelmingly positive. “We’re probably going to run out of room on the board,” she said. “A lot of the other students have really gotten behind this, especially the Year 8s – I think most of the guys that came to school in free dress and donated a coin are in that grade. “One of the good things about Bullying: No Way is that the donated money goes not just into support of victims but also into education of bullies themselves, particularly young ones – I think it’s very important to get the message to them while they are young.” ASHS principal Tony Whybird said the day tied into the school’s messages of acceptance and harmony. “Our last school assembly focused on everybody accepting and tolerating each other,” he said. “But we also made it clear that nobody should tolerate bullying – so this day is about everyone stand-

ing up and saying ‘bullying is not acceptable to us.” Mr Whybird said current technology like social media made fighting bullying a complex task but Generation Y’s head was already in the right place. “Things are very different now to how they were when I was at school – videos can be taken anywhere and shared everywhere easily over Facebook, so a victim of bullying can suffer it very publicly these days,”

Students at Mareeba State School (MSS) celebrated their community’s multiculturalism by creating hundreds of small dolls as part of Harmony Day on March 21. About 400 paper dolls, displaying a wide variety of cultural clothes and ethnic backgrounds, were crafted by the students over the course of last week and displayed in the school library on the day. Harmony Day aims to promote tolerance, acceptance and celebration of Australia’s multicultural history and encourages participants to wear orange. The MSS event was organised by school librarian Elizabeth Crunkhorn.

Students were also rewarded with prizes such as balloons and kites for the best dolls. Head of curriculum Valerie Dayes said the widely varied backgrounds of MSS students made Harmony Day a fitting celebration for the school. “Mareeba State School is a very, very diverse place,” she said. “We have students here with family backgrounds from all over the world and a lot of Indigenous students too. “The kids have really gotten behind Harmony Day – there’s been a steady stream of dolls coming in all week and we all think it’s very good idea to appreciate Australia as a nation of diversity.”

he said. “But I think the whole attitude toward bullying has changed – it used to be something that was taken as accepted and now I see the students here rejecting it outright everywhere, kids are better behaved and less violent than ever.” This is the second year that ASHS has observed the National Day of Action.

Council will fund water at Industrial Park By Ryan Groube The Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) will pull $160,000 from its water reserve to fund an infrastructure upgrade at the Industrial Park. When the park was being developed by council the water infrastructure that was installed did not meet Queensland Fire and Rescue fire-fighting standards. Without access to water pressure of 20 litres per second, some businesses in the industrial park are unable to acquire sufficient insurance coverage. The Express also understands that business managers are concerned about the quantity of water available and the lack of alternate access to the site. The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) began upgrading infrastructure to the site in 2012-13 but additional funding was needed to complete the job. The upgrade will include the installation of booster pumps and a shed to house associated equipment adjacent to the Granite Creek Sewerage Pump Station. Cr Alan Pedersen said: “They [businesses at the park] are paying for a standard water supply which we weren’t delivering.” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said the existing system had been inadequate from the beginning, and council – as the developers of the park, had a responsibility to fix it. He also said he “greatly feared” that there will not be enough water available at the park of service the 700acre precinct once it is fully developed. The MSC will soon begin a marketing blitz promoting the park in the hope of attracting more businesses. The work on the water upgrade is expected to be completed by June 30.

New line will filter calls By Boyd Robertson

Mareeba Police Station communications co-ordinator Sergeant Chris Harris and Senior Sergeant Derek Garner.

Tableland residents calling their local police station after hours for non-urgent matters will soon have to speak to operators in Brisbane. On March 31 the stations of the Tablelands Patrol Region will stop forwarding their after-hours calls to the Mareeba Police Station and instead will prompt users to dial 131 444, which will connect them to the Policelink call centre in Brisbane. Policelink will pass on non-urgent matters via email to the caller’s closest station via internal emails. If the matter is judged to be urgent, the caller will be directly connected to their closest manned station. Previously, the Mareeba station’s communications co-ordinator was at risk of being overwhelmed by trivial and urgent calls alike on busy nights, a problem the switchover is designed to solve. Senior Sergeant Derek Garner said the switchover would boost police efficiency but would not mean general requests would go unanswered. “One thing we want to make clear is there is not going to be any loss of service from this switchover,” Senior Sergeant Garner said. “What it means is that someone who might be witnessing an assault won’t be waiting for the communications co-ordinator to get off the phone with someone call-

ing about something like weapons registration, if they’re calling after hours. “This will lead to more efficient co-ordination for first-response units - and in an emergency, every second counts.” The Mareeba station receives on average 6 – 7,000 calls a month, about 400 of which are 000 or urgent calls. The highest period of calls starts at about 4pm on Thursday afternoons, continuing through to about 2am on Sunday morning. Senior Sergeant Garner also said that a small but appreciable percentage of urgent police calls were made falsely or for trivial

matters, and reminded the public that there were severe penalties for misusing the 000 service. The Queensland Police Service is continuing to push the value of the Policelink system, with plans underway to phase out stations’ contact numbers from phonebooks. Examples of non-urgent events that merit a call to Policelink include wilful property damage, stealing offences, break-and-enters, stolen vehicles and lost property. The service is also ideal for arranging to speak with an officer, asking questions or making complaints.

A $750,000 upgrade of footpaths along Byrnes Street is expected to be complete by the end of April. The final stage of the work is being completed from the corner of Byrnes and Hort streets along to McDonalds. Once complete, about 2200 square metres of new concrete will be laid along about 637 metres of the main street. The bulk of the funding for the project comes from the proceeds of a successful compensation case. In the late 1990s, the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) ordered tiles to be laid in Byrnes Street. The tiles were deemed unsuitable and the MSC were awarded $500,000 in compensation through the courts. That money sat in a constrained re-

serve for years to be used for the specific purpose of upgrading the Byrnes Street footpaths. The remainder of the funding comes from the Byrnes Street Benefitted Area Levy, paid by businesses in the main street as part of their rates. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said it was important that a town’s main street look clean and well maintained. “It is important that a town has a streetscape that is nice to look at and is something that your community can be proud of,” he said. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said the improvements were “long overdue”. “The better a town looks the more confidence it inspires so it will be good to have our footpaths bought back up to a good standard,” Mr Moro said.

Concerns raised over truck route By Ryan Groube Council has voiced serious concerns about the local roads Mackay Sugar plans to use to transport Tableland cane to the Mossman Mill. A permit application by Mackay Sugar seeking expanded B Double operations is “imminent” with the 2014 cane season to begin in May. Prior to receiving the application, councillors were asked to raise any concerns they have about a list of roads proposed for B Double use. Many are narrow country roads while others run through the heart of

Wet Tropics Management Authority principal conservation officer Bruce Jennison and Russett Park resident Mikhaila Jacoby.

Authorities plan to eradicate ant By Ryan Groube The Wet Tropics Management Authority is hoping to eradicate a 16-hectare infestation of a debilitating pest at Russett Park, on the outskirts of Kuranda. In late 2013, a Russett Park resident reported an outbreak of yellow crazy ants at his property to environmental authorities. The ants are one of the world’s worst invasive species and can injure or kill native and domestic animals by spraying formic acid to subdue prey. Children and adults are also at risk with the ant’s discharging an acid capable of burning or irritating broken skin and, in extreme cases, causing temporary blindness. Conservation volunteers have been conducting surveys in the area to determine the extent of the outbreak before an eradication program can begin. Local residents have been urged to be vigilant in preventing the spread of the ants by: not removing green waste from their properties, spray pot plants with insecticide if moving home and checking yards regularly for signs of outbreaks. The Russett Park’s infestations proximity to the Barron River and Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage site has made eradicating the colony a priority for the Wet Tropics Management Authority. In the coming weeks, the Authority plan to hold a public meeting of residents of the area prior to beginning the eradication treatment. Baiting programs will be run to eradicate the infestation but can only be done during a certain stage of the Queen’s lifecycle and during fine weather. Bait pellets containing insecticide will be scattered across the infected area with ants to transport the bait back to the nest. It is expected that three treatments are required, four months apart until success-

ful, will be needed to fully eliminate the infestation. In the meantime, the Authority’s principal conservation officer Bruce Jennison said containing the outbreak was critical. “At the moment a lot of the preliminary work is determining exactly the extent of the outbreak before we can begin baiting,” he said. “From there it is mainly a timing issue. We have to hit the nests at the appropriate time in the life-cycle of the Queen.” Mikhaila Jacoby is a Russett Park resident whose property has been taken over by the ants. She said about three months ago they had been at the property boundary but had now established themselves throughout the 1.5 acre lot. “You only have to walk out the front door to see them,” she said. “Quite a few residents in this area are concerned about their pets and so many of us live in this area because we love the environment. “It is definitely a major concern for the biodiversity of this area.” Typically, eradicating outbreaks on private property is the responsibility of the landowner but in this case the Authority has stepped in. The Authority will funnel a portion of $2 million in funding it has received from the Federal Government to eradicate a larger yellow crazy ant infestation south of Cairns at Edmonton to assist. It is believed that the colony in Kuranda began after ants from the infestation in Cairns “hitched” a ride on earthworks machinery. Any resident who believes they have an infestation on their property has been urged to contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23. A fact sheet about the ants can be found at www.daff.qld.gov.au and by searching yellow crazy ants.

Mareeba. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator will make the final decision to approve routes but council does have a say. Mackay Sugar is hoping to obtain a letter of ‘no objection’ from Council for the extended B Double route for 2014-15 but are unlikely to get it. “A letter of no objection? I have plenty of objections on a lot of these roads because I can guarantee you a B Double won’t get through,” Cr Nipper Brown said. “Quite a number of these roads are clearly not suitable,” Deputy

Mayor Jenny Jensen said. “It appears that they have cast a wide net across the whole town [with the list of roads]. Why you would want to go down some of these streets is beyond me,” Cr Alan Pedersen said. Cr Pedersen said he was “baffled” that among the list of already approved B Double routes was Costin Street. He said the Tablelands Regional Council had tried for years to use that street as an access route for heavy vehicles to get into the Industrial Estate on the western side of Mareeba.

Heroic guest of honour at event By Ryan Groube An Australian war hero who lost his arm and right eye in Afghanistan will be the guest speaker at a fund-raising event for Yungaburra’s Avenue of Honour. In November 2007, Sergeant Michael Lyddiard was part of a combat engineering team serving in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. During Operation Spin Ghar on November 2, an Improvised Explosive Devise Sergeant Lyddiard was attempting to disarm exploded. The Townsville-based soldier lost his right arm below the elbow, his thumb and index finger on his left hand, and his right eye. Mareeba veteran Craig Reedman served with Sergeant Lyddiard and was deployed on the same mission when the IED exploded. Mr Reedman was an organiser of A Night for the Avenue – a fund-raising event held in Mareeba last year to raise money for Yungaburra’s national war monument – the Avenue of Honour. After the success of the event, Mr Reedman decided to run a similar event this year but rebranded as The Anzac Ball. It will be held at the Mareeba RSL on April 5. Mr Reedman reached out to his old war buddy and asked him to speak about life after service as an injured veteran. “Michael has done some remarkable things since he was injured and has an amazing story to tell,” Mr Reedman said. “As a motivational speaker he talks about there being two ways to deal with tragic and life changing events.” After recovering from his wounds in a German hospital, Sergeant Lyddiard returned to work two months later. He continued to serve with the Australian Defence Force for three years attempting to prove to himself, and his superiors, he could still be an effective soldier. In February 2011, Lyddiard was devastated after being told to leave the army and pursue another career. Since leaving the armed forces, he has completed a diploma of management and is in his second year studying at James Cook University where he hopes to become an occupational therapist specialising in rehabilitation and psychology. He also regularly takes part in endurance events including: swimming from Magnetic Island to Townsville, traversing the Rottnest Channel in Western Australia raising $47,000 for Legacy and most re-

Cat registration not necessary By Boyd Robertson Changes to local laws mean that Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) residents will no longer have to register their cats after June 30. Electronic microchipping of the pets will still be mandatory. Council unanimously voted to remove compulsory registration of the pet animals at their March 20 meeting.

The decision is designed to lift administrative burdens on council and registration costs for ratepayers. A report to council last year indicated that only 11 entire cats are actively registered, along with 644 de-sexed cats. It also indicated that, since 2010 to date 428 cats had been impounded and only 27 released. Report author and Manager Regulatory Services Kirsty Lam-

perd, told Council it was very rare any impounded cat was either micro-chipped or registered. “Micro-chipping is an effective and efficient way of ensuring your cat, if it does wander, can be returned to you from the pound,” Mayor Rosa Lee Long said. Councillors noted that “we have voted to make cat ownership easier and cheaper and urge cat owners to also play their part for the community, and for their pets.”

The Anzac Ball will also include a three course meal, a charity auction and entertainment by the 1RAR band from Townsville. Money raised from the evening will be split between the Avenue of Honour and wounded serviceman charity Soldier On. Mr Reedman said he hoped to make The Anzac Ball an annual event. “We had decided within days of the last event to put it on again,” he said. “We had such a great night last year and while it is more about having an entertaining night it also comes with that message about [the impact] of war.” The Avenue of Honour was unveiled last year with the official opening attended by former Prime Minister Julia Gillard, current PM Tony Abbott and Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith. Mr Reedman said the event would always donate money for the maintenance of the war memorial as well as another defence force related charity.

Monthly payments for electricity ERGON Energy has introduced a monthly payment program to help householders struggling to balance their budgets. Both residential and business customers are able to participate, as long as their meters are read quarterly. Executive General Manager Retail Ros Baker said Pay-Per-Month is designed to prompt customers to make advance payments towards their quarterly bill, breaking it up into smaller pieces to avoid “bill shock”.

“Under the plan, Ergon will send a notice to customers in the two months between a quarterly bill around the same day of the month, prompting them to make payment,” she said. “The aim is to cover a third of the quarterly bill amount in each pay-per-month instalment, with the remaining third due on their regular bill.” Pay-per-month gives customers the ability to choose the amount of the instalment which can be paid by a range of payment options.

Council tests disaster readiness TWO exercises later this year will put aspects of disaster preparedness to the test for Tablelands Regional Council. The first, Exercise Bright Spark, will put the innovative Community All-Hazard Disaster Plans under the spotlight. A report to the most recent meeting of Tablelands Regional Council from Senior Advisor Disaster Management Sarah Dean outlined how the plans, in place at Herberton, Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Mt Garnet, Ravenshoe, Tinaroo/Kairi and Yungaburra would be the focus of the desk-top exercise. The exercise aims to use a simulated wildfire event to test the activation of the plans, look at the ability of Community Disaster Teams to react, see how communications links and processes work and spot any changes that need to be made. It will be followed later in the year by another exercise testing how a post-cyclone evacuation would take place. Titled Exercise Embrace, it will feature the Atherton State High School Community Hall as

an evacuation centre. Volunteers will be used to simulate evacuees and the hall will be manned and operated during the exercise. A range of factors will be tested, including the ability of the TRC and Red Cross to manage an evacuation centre, whether the hall is suitable for the purpose and how a Register, Find, Reunite Service works to bring lost community members back in to contact.

Planting for tree roos Enthusiastic volunteer tree planters got their hands dirty for a good cause on Saturday in Malanda. It was a big day in Malanda with an additional 150 tree-planting newcomers and loyalists skipping the markets to plant 2500 trees just outside the town. Those trees have been planted to create a link between the North Johnstone Riverand Cleminson Creek on the Malanda North site. Coordinator of the Tree Roo Trails project for the Malanda Chamber of Commerce (MCOC), Alison Eaton was rapt. “This enormous community effort will do so much for our unique local Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo,” she said. “Instead of hopping clumsily across 300 metres of bare paddock exposed to dogs and other dangers, our tree roos will soon Catch up with be traversing that distance in their custom-planted pathway of trees that offer food and shelter.

DaviD Kempton mp It has been a very busy and productive few weeks for both the Cook electorate and Queensland Parliament. Last Wednesday our Government introduced major reforms to the state’s leasehold land system. The Land and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2014 will provide greater security of tenure for leaseholders and help drive growth in the key agriculture and tourism sectors. Having been one of the most active and vocal representatives of the rural industry on this issue for many years, I am very proud to have played a part in this important move. The Bill will not only restore security and certainty around pastoral leases, it will also free up rules on ownership and aggregation of holdings. It will reduce costs and modernise tenure administration for around 6,600 leases worth more than $60 billion across the state. No longer will landholders have to go cap in hand to the Government to have their lease renewed. A fantastic outcome to say the least.

David Kempton MP with MSC Cr Mary Graham at the Community Forum

Just over a week ago, I had the pleasure of hosting a community priority session in Mareeba which was attended by about 85 local leaders and residents. Thank you to everyone who participated and made it such a productive and worthwhile event. As our guest speakers from the local police force pointed out, crime rates have dropped significantly in the past two years and Mareeba remains a great place to live, work and raise a family. There were no surprises in the key short term aspirations that came out of the session; improved road and primary industry infrastructure and better sport and recreation facilities. I am now in the process of collating all the information in an official report to take to the Government and ensure we, as a community, have direct input into where we want to go. As always don’t forget to contact my Mareeba office if there is anything we can help you with.

CFMOTO CF500 Classic sells up a storm Hi folks and welcome to another edition of Ride. First I would like to thank everyone who contacted me over the last few weeks wishing me well on my recent appointment as the “Face of Relay For life” in Cairns, for the Cancer Council. Yes, I am a Cancer survivor and a Motorcycle rider. I actually bought my first road bike in the middle of surgery and Chemo. Although I could not ride it at the time, I parked it right outside my window at home so I could see it and it would taunt me for a while until I had the strength to throw my leg over it and take it for a ride. I was in a great deal of pain at the time and I thought I won’t take any pain killers today, I’m going for a ride instead and see what happens. That was the best thing I ever did for my recovery, by the time I snicked top gear and opened the throttle, the pain disappeared and the feeling was pure joy and freedom and this is when I remembered that adrenalin blocks pain. The worst thing I did was, I was out riding one day and I was having a ball and then I remembered my appointment at the Cancer Centre. I made the mistake of walking in with my helmet, and I got a drilling from my Oncologist on how dangerous it was to ride a motorcycle in my condition! I told her that riding a motorcycle was heaps safer than her Chemo that almost killed me, and for some reason we never really got on well after that – obviously not a bike fan. I was out at the Mareeba Motocross Club’s come and try practice weekend a couple of weeks ago and it was awesome to see so many new riders join the club and have a taste of racing Motocross and hopefully they will be regulars at future race meets. The weekend also included coaching

sessions and trade displays from Cairns and local Motorcycle shops, with quite a few of them offering track test rides on their latest bikes, which I think is a smart way of doing business as there are few places you can try before you buy a motocross bike. Trinity Kawasaki had lots of riders testing their latest models and Motosapien had the new Husqvarna 450 and the new 250 two stroke as well. Local motocross racer Daniel schweiger was so impressed with the new Husqvarna 250 that you couldn’t pry him off it with a crowbar. Anyhow this event each year is getting bigger and bigger and congrats to the club for an awesome weekend. Some other local track news is that the Far North Road Racing Club who are based out at Mako track are holding a Come and try day and are also having a one hour endurance race and a sports bike show and shine on the day. This is all happening on Sunday April 13, and is shaping up to be a huge event. The gates open at 9.30am and is free entry for spectators to the complex and a gold coin donation would be graciously accepted by the club if you wish to help them out. There will be heaps of non stop action on the track with the SuperMoto demo, the one hour endurance race and the come and try riders and more. The Sports Bike Show and Shine have a heap of different classes with major prizes up for grabs and will be judged by Ian Hopkins and presentations will be held early afternoon. For more information on this upcoming event, you can find them at www.fnqroadracingclub.com.au. So folks that about wraps it up for this month, if your out riding, stay safe and enjoy the RIDE. Cheers, Andrew.

THE MONUMENTS MEN

An unlikely team of art historians and curators, led by Frank Stokes (George Clooney) is tasked by President Roosevelt with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell. With the help of a well placed French administrator, Claire Simone (Cate Blanchett), The Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of significant art and culture; they risk their lives to rescue mankind’s greatest artistic achievements. (Based on a true story).

Bandits victorious at home grand final

Photos by Peter Roy The Mareeba Bandits are all smiles after the Cricket Far North series grand finals at Kerribee Park on Sunday. 3rd Grade won against the Port Douglas Muddies to seal the series, while the Under 16s gave an excellent account of themselves in a loss against Atherton. Mareeba Gold (pictured above left) beat Mareeba Blue for the Under 14s premiership, which was moved to Borzi Park after being rained out of Kerribee. Bandits spokesman Danny Shaw said the 3rd Grade match against

the Muddies was ‘always going to be a fiery grand final’ and he wasn’t wrong. Port took to the bat first and made 145, setting the Bandits a good total to chase. Adam Roy on 2 for 18 off 6 overs and Rob Wallace on 3 for 25 off 5 overs were at their best with the ball. Mareeba went into bat with Rob Taylor and Bandits president Bomber Adams opening. Adams went on to make 31, with captain Brendan Payne (pictured above right) topping his score at 67 not out to win the game for the Ban-

dits in the 24th over. The Bandits Under 16s went in for their second day against Atherton facing formidable batsmen Tom Watson and Paul Nasser, who scored 68 and 40 runs respectively. Nick Turner stood out as Mareeba’s best bowler on 1 for 13 off 8 overs. With a target of 222 runs, coach Jim Bombardieri said his team ‘was in with a good chance if they could start well and get a solid partnership going.’ Things didn’t exactly turn out as planned – Mareeba lost two early

wickets but Lochlan Anthony and Lachlan Ford worked to settle the ship, making 20 runs each. From there, however, Atherton’s pressure was too great and wickets began to tumble, and eventually Mareeba was bowled out for 156. Bombaderi said ‘it’s a great season for these young men finishing second in the CFN competition, we could not have asked for more.’ A Bandits victory as the only possible outcome when Mareeba Gold took on their Mareeba Blue rivals for the Under 14s top spot. High-powered hits by batsman

Brett Girgenti turned things around for the lagging Gold, leaving them up 32 runs at the end of play. One of Girgenti’s sixes reportedly carried an estimated 65 metres, clearing the Ladies’ stand and bouncing clean over his own mother’s car. After play had concluded Adams took the opportunity to extend his thanks to all the club’s supporters, past players, family and friends that attended the final and cheered their home side on. The Bandits will celebrate the season at their presentation night on Saturday night at the Mareeba Turf Club.

MSS to rep Tablelands in development competition Mareeba State School (MSS)’s Under 12s rugby team will will head to Cairns on Friday for the next round of the NRL Development Cup. The boys won the opportunity after steamrolling the St Josephs / Small Schools combined team 42 - 0 on February 28. Outstanding individual performances and excellent teamwork enabled Mareeba to dominate the match. The winner of the Cairns round will determine which school travels to Townsville to represent the entire region. MSS staff and students alike wish the team good luck for the Cairns round.

By Ryan Groube The speedway season will roar into action on April 6 with the running of a new series, the Kerribee Park Classic. In a bid to rally the troops in the early stages of the season, the Mareeba Motor Racing Club (MMRC) has also put up a $1700 purse. The top three placegetters across the three round series, which will conclude in June, will split the purse with the winner pocketing $1000. MMRC member John Tichborne said drivers from Townsville and Gladstone had already expressed interest in attending the series.

“The new series is just an incentive to get more cars onto our track early in the season,” he said. “From memory, this will be the most money offered up here in a car race. “Hopefully the drivers are interested and will come and get their cars on the track instead of letting them sit in their sheds.” The series will be a part of the club’s monthly race meetings and all points accrued will go towards the club’s major championship – the King of Kerribee. Each round of the Kerribee Park Classic will consist of five A Grade

heats and a feature race. Tichborne said he hopes that senior drivers from lower grades will also nominate to test themselves against the region’s best racers. “Those drivers from the other divisions should see this series as a chance to test themselves against the better drivers,” he said. “The great thing about having a series over multiple rounds is that it becomes more about consistency of results rather than winning at all costs.” Racing begins at 10am on April 6 with drivers needing to report earlier from scrutineering.

Bulls pip Dolphins By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Bulls are through to the next stage of the of the FFA cup after edging out the Stratford Dolphins 2-1 at Borzi Park on Saturday night. Wet, rainy conditions made life complicated for both sides as Dolphins danger man Joe Rusch shocked Mareeba with an early goal. Bulls midfielder Robert Pendenza responded by bulleting a 40-yard shot clean through Dolphin keeper Angelo Serafin’s hands. Not to be outdone, striker Steven Cater popped up to tip the scales in Mareeba’s favour 15 minutes out from full time. The win allows Mareeba to go up against the FNQ Heat on April 20 at a yetto-be-determined venue. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said the game was a hard-fought win and that going up against the Heat would be a significant challenge. “The conditions didn’t make it easy, we enjoyed the possession but we still had to

fight for it – Stratford fought hard but in the end we’re pleased to come out with the result we did,” Srhoj said. “There’s still things we can improve on – we have to train hard and ensure our level is the highest it can be.” Mareeba captain Victor Madrid said despite some new blood still working out their place within the team, his side had coordinated well in bad conditions. “We started off well, there was patches there we might have played a pretty sloppy, especially toward the end when we scored that second goal,” Madrid said. “I think we’re coming together well, and when we play well we play really well.” Madrid also said taking on the Heat would be a ‘new experience’ for many Bulls players. “For some of us it’s going to be new, for others it’s just going to be another game,” he said. “Nevertheless the Heat are a quality side, they train three days a week and play at a national level so it’ll definitely be a hard game.”

Suburbs knock down ‘Gators The Mareeba Gladiators have been handed a severe thrashing by the Southern Suburbs Cockatoos at Davies Park on Saturday, with the A Grade side losing 8-40. Mareeba’s Reserves and Under 18s sides also went down 10-38 and 22-36, respectively. The loss makes for a demoralising start to the season for the Gladiators A Grade squad, who received a similar drubbing from Mossman/Port Douglas in their first game the previous weekend. Repeated errors and woeful defence at the tryline by the Gladiators coupled with Suburbs’ excellent co-ordination meant Mareeba could never gain any momentum in the offence, despite tries by hooker Adenesia Cokanasiga and centre Rob Pedersen. Pedersen’s dramatic try after scooping up a fumbled Suburbs ball near the tryline was a momentary hope spot for the Mareeba crowd, who had turned out in force to see the home side play and

erupted in cheers as he slid across the line. However Mareeba never really got the chance to repeat the feat, forced into defence by the relentless Cockatoos offensive game. The Gladiators also lost scrum-half Jackson Peters and captain Jack Pedersen to injury midway through the game, with Peters stretchered off field and expected to be sidelined for at least several weeks. A Grade coach Cameron McPherson had no excuses for the ‘disappointing loss’, admitting his squad had simply been outperformed despite their best efforts. “I can’t fault the boys’ attitude, we just weren’t disciplined enough and made so many errors,” he said. “The effort this week was good and it’s clear what we need to work on is execution and co-ordination – it’s no good to put in 100 per cent effort but only come away with 30 per cent proper execution.”

Roosters battle Brothers By Boyd Robertson The Atherton Roosters Under 18s side has stood out from the rest of the town’s teams after comfortably defeating Brothers Cairns in a home game on Saturday. The Under 18s were the only Roosters side to come out on top at Atherton Showgrounds on the weekend, with the A Grade squad losing 22-30 and the Reserves going down 24-30. Under 18s winger Dylan Parise, centre Tom Squires, five-eighth Ned Blackman and forward Jimmy

Malone all planted impressive tries for Atherton during the game, with kicker Jake Fahey successfully converting two tries. Superior coordination and aggressiveness in the ruck meant they kept the Brothers on the back foot for the whole game, with Cairns only able to land a single converted try. The Under 18s have had a brilliant start to their season so far after smashing Ivanhoes 44-16 in the first game and edging out the Edmonton Storm 30-26 on March 16. In the A Grade game Dean McGlvary scored two tries for the

Roosters, with Jamie Thackery and Tyson Birchal also crossing the line. Kicker Nathan Curcio made three conversions. The Roosters Reserves (action from Saturday’s game pictured) faced extremely tough opposition from their Brothers counterparts, in particular from dreadlock-sporting forward Jackson Wosomo. Reserves players Craig Gregory, Joel Masso and Aaron Price all scored tries for the Roosters during the game, setting up two conversions each for Noel Woodleigh and Graham Henry.

Ladies hockey team Away Game! Ivanhoes vs off to state finals A group of 14 keen young ladies will be travelling to the Gold Coast to represent the Atherton Tableland Hockey Association at the Ladies State Open Championships on April 25-28. Building upon the experience of 2013 where the team placed 16th in the State Championships, the Atherton team are travelling to Cairns on a weekly basis to practice on the turf fields used in championship games in addition to regular training sessions on the Tableland. It is hoped that getting in the vital turf skills training will make the team more competitive in the championship’s round robin competition. To support the cost of travel and accom-

modation the team are planning a number of fundraising events, including a a car wash to be held at Rob Cahill’s Auto Service in Atherton’s Main Street on April 12. Manager Chris Clair urged the Tableland community to support the team. “These girls have put in a fantastic effort in their commitment to the team and training,” Clair said. “They will be representing their community at state-level titles and any help they can get through people either attending this car wash and other fundraising functions or through donations or sponsorship will be greatly appreciated.” Clair added that he can be contacted on 0488 913 334.
