best fun on two wheels at bike show By Katherine Kokkonen
THE hum of engines was only matched by the buzz of the crowd at the Mareeba Workers Club 14th Annual Bike Show. Bike enthusiasts and those looking for a good time flocked to the largest bike show in Northern Queensland, on Saturday. Liz Rice drew admiring looks with her 1942 WLA Harley. She has owned the vintage bike for three years and had owned a similar one during her twenties. Turn to page 11, for more on the Bike Show. PHOTO BY PETER ROY.

THE Mareeba Shire Council is taking a stance against the state government and its cost shifting manoeuvres over Open Level Crossings (OLC). Councillor Allan Holmes spoke against signing an interface agreement with Queensland Rail, which would assign MSC with the responsibility for level crossing auditing and compliance requirements. At council’s meeting, on August 20, Cr Holmes said the interface agreement was based on
the principle that at OLC where rail and roads intersect the instigator of risk is the road. Therefore, the road manager has the compliance responsibility. Taking over the responsibility for the level crossing auditing and compliance requirement would cost MSC $132,000 annually. “This won’t add to safety or efficiency and it doesn’t matter if we have one train a week or one train an hour – I’d like to clearly point out that Mareeba Shire has one train a week,” Cr Holmes said. “I don’t know what the full implications of not

signing this agreement would be, but if it is a fine of $20,000 we would be a lot better off paying the fine.” Cr Holmes said he didn’t believe that Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson thought the interface agreement was a good idea, but more likely thought up by a “highly paid bureaucrat”. “I would also suggest, Mr Mayor, that we should be talking to the minister and not the bureaucrat because I don’t think he is the owner of a great deal of commonsense,” Cr Holmes said.

MSC voted to send a letter to Minister Scott Emerson outlining Mareeba Shire’s circumstances and the belief that regular audits should be undertaken co-jointly with MSC and QR and that MSC would seek to enter a cost sharing arrangement for any maintenance works required as a result of the audits. Cr Pedersen voiced his support for Cr Holmes and said the interface agreement was another way for the state government to pass the buck to councils. CONTINUED P3

Students cement their love of astrophysics By Katherine Kokkonen

Starry-eyed students have taken their love of astrophysics to the next level by completing work experience at universities. Atherton State High School Students Grace Lawrence and Chris Dilger have returned from their stints at Australian National University (ANU) and Swinburne University buzzing with excitement. The students became interested in astrophysics through their studies in high school and, after completing work experience, are now keen to return to university and further their studies.
Year 11 student Chris spent a week at Swinburne where he had the opportunity to study black holes and use professional research tools during his work experience. “This has confirmed that I’m interested in a combination of IT and astrophysics,” Chris said. “It was good to see what a researcher does and how they integrate the two parts. I enjoy the physical applications of astrophysics and how the technology can be applied in other ways, as well.” Year 12 student Grace went to ANU for one week and enjoyed being treated like an adult, undertaking

THREE Mareeba State High School students have battled it out in the maths arena, showing there is more to the discipline than addition and subtraction. Daniel Strazzeri, Richard Thompson and Joshua Theakston will be heading to Brisbane to compete in the state finals of the Queensland Association of Maths Teachers Year 8 Maths Quiz, after taking out the competition to come out on top in Far North Region. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the boys, with the competition coming down to the wire. Maths teacher John Sellars was impressed by the team’s steady performance in the quiz, especially that they won in a tie-breaker against Trinity Anglican School. “They did very well,” he said. “It was exciting.” While the team found estimation to be the toughest aspect of maths, getting one out of five questions correct in the estimation round, they performed well under pressure to answer an estimation question correctly in the tie-breaker. “Maths is challenging and there are a lot of rules that you have remember,” Joshua said. “I want to keep studying maths and improve my knowledge.”

Employee stole thousands By Katherine Kokkonen
MPM owner Selena Carabot.
A sense of betrayal and disappointment haunts a small business owner, after a former employee stole tens of thousands of dollars from her business. MPM owner Selena Carabot wanted to remind business owners to be vigilant after an employee, who had worked for her for almost three years, betrayed her trust. Ex-employee Pamela Lyn Groundwater pleaded guilty to eight
charges at the Mareeba Magistrates Court, on July 17. She was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment, to be released after serving three months, and was ordered to pay more than $37,000 in compensation. Ms Groundwater was the senior property manager and licensed accounts department manager. Despite the business’s accounts being regularly audited through a reputable accountancy firm, Ms Groundwater’s deception
remained undetected until another employee returned to work and discovered discrepancies in the accounts. Once the discrepancies had been detected, Ms Groundwater’s illegal acts intensified. Police investigated her for ten months and found she had been stealing money from the trust account. “It is a timely reminder for small business owners to be more vigilant,” Ms Carabot said. Over Ms Groundwater’s time at
MPM she had developed a solid and trusting relationship with Ms Carabot, to the point where Ms Carabot paid for the funeral of Ms Groundwater’s father. After hearing rumours that Ms Groundwater felt compelled to steal because she was not being paid correctly, Ms Carabot wanted to set the record straight. “I was so disappointed because I really had gone that extra step to really look after her,” Ms Carabot said.

Council cross at state passing on rail cost FROM P1 “I just think this is a cost-shifting exercise,” he said. “We have had this in the past, with the EPA, and I think this is another one that is a headache for the state and they are just throwing it in our court. I think it is about time we stood up and said ‘we don’t want it’.” Mayor Tom Gilmore expected that negotiations between MSC and QR would hinge on the term “reasonable”. He pointed to the obligations of Road Managers and that it outlined one of their responsibilities as “determine measures to manage those risks, so far as is reasonably practicable”. However, Mayor Gilmore said he was aware that it was possible that QR might have more stringent views on rail safety than those held by MSC. “I don’t like to continue crying poor, but this council is brand new and we’ve just delivered the toughest budget,” he said. “All of a sudden the state says, ‘you must do this, too’ and it’s another $130,000 and that equates to a one per cent increase of rates.” While MSC will enter into negotiations, Mayor Gilmore was not hopeful that an agreement would be reached and said this situation was an example of the state taking a one-size-fits all approach to local councils. A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said level crossing interface agreements provided an opportunity to collaboratively plan the best use of available resources to maintain level crossing safety and that the implementation of the agreements should not add “any significant
additional financial burdens to either party”. “It is recommended Mareeba Shire Council continue to negotiate the details of the interface agreement with Queensland Rail in order to meet their legislative obligations,” the spokesperson said. “Queensland Rail and Transport and Main Roads are committed to improving safety at level crossings, but it’s everyone’s responsibility to play their part.”

Mutchilba State School celebrated its 75th Anniversary on Saturday, August 23. It welcomed numerous past students and teachers from interstate and overseas. The school, which officially opened on August 21, 1939, has seen many changes over the years, not only in the education department, but also the infrastructure around the school grounds. The parcel of land on which the school stands today was kindly donated by Joseph Masterson and family in the late thirties. Mutchilba State School closed for a period during World War II and was reopened in 1944 by Thelma Moss who was the sole teacher at the school until 1947. Thelma recalls: “We called them the good old days completely different to today, there were no bitumen roads, no electricity and there was no need to discipline the kids, you just had to say ‘I’ll let your father know about this’ – it was easy teaching in those days.” Jean Colman was a teacher at Mutchilba

Tradition continues By Katherine Kokkonen What started out as a happy accident has become a family tradition, after three generations of one family were married and held their receptions at the same locations. Silvano and Nikita Fregona (nee Hughes) continued the family tradition when they were married at St Thomas and held their reception at the PCYC main hall, on Saturday. The tradition started when the groom’s grandparents on his mother side were married at the same locations in 1963, with the groom’s parents following in their footsteps in 1987. Mother of the groom Sarina Fregona said while it wasn’t planned to have the special occasions held at the same locations, it ended up adding an extra layer of significance to the event. “Especially now that the grandparents have passed away, it has been really touching,” she said. “It makes it really special; it wasn’t planned, but it was meant to be.”

Bringing history into the classroom By Katherine Kokkonen
Mareeba RSL Community Links Officer Jimmy Ingram displays the badges the schools will receive on completing their research.
THE link between the past and the present is being strengthened through a program that brings history into the classroom. Students at Biboohra State School, Mareeba State School, Mareeba State High School, St Thomas School and St Stephen’s College are taking part in the Australia-wide RSL Community Links program. Students are researching and studying the history behind the 22 names inscribed on the Mareeba cenotaph. The up-coming 100th anniversary of ANZAC day is the inspiration behind getting youth to take an interest in World War One. Upon completing their studies into the soldiers, the schools will receive special RSL badges that students will at commemorative occasions. Mareeba RSL Community Links Officer Jimmy Ingram said the response from the students had been fantastic. He has been giving an ANZAC Day
Time to re-tune your TV Viewers who receive their signal from the Mareeba TV tower will need to retune their TV on September 2 after 9am. As the final step in Australia’s move to digital-only TV, some TV channels will change frequencies. After the channels have changed, you will need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to find the channels that have moved. These moves will free up broadcasting spectrum so that it can be used for new services, such as mobile broadband. Once the channels have moved, viewers will need to retune their digital TV, settop box or digital TV recorder to get them back. “Retuning is simple—for most systems press the ‘menu’ button on the remote and follow the prompts to retune,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “If you find channels haven’t changed,

you may be receiving a signal from a different TV transmitter. You can check to see which channels should have changed in your area by entering your address into the ‘get retune info’ box on the website. In some cases, certain digital equipment will automatically retune itself. This means you won’t need to do anything. People living in apartments may be using a shared antenna system. If channels do not reappear after retuning, they should contact their property manager. In Atherton, the retune will occur on 4 September and retuning should not be done until after 3.30pm as channels will not move until then. If you have difficulty retuning you should refer to the manufacturer’s handbook, visit the Digital Ready website, www.digitalready.gov.au/retune or call the Digital Ready Information Line 1800 20 10 13 from 8am to 10pm (AEST), 7 days.
talk at the school for years and said the students are very curious about war history. “They learn how tough it was and what happened to the guys, and on Vietnam Veterans Day or ANZAC day they wear the badges,” he said. “You must keep that continuity and be aware of the history – there were so many sacrifices,” he said. “Everyone is dying off and we have to keep that link; there are only a few of us still around and we’re not getting any younger. The Australian digger and mateship is what it is built on, so these kids must learn about it.” Mr Ingram is also a Vietnam veteran and was moved by the Vietnam Veterans ceremony that took place on Monday, August 18, at the Mareeba cenotaph. He still has strong memories of his time as a Captain’s Steward, in the Navy, during the Vietnam War. TRC Mayor not innocent Re: The Express, August 20 TRC Complaints ‘lack substance’. The Mayor claiming “vindication” is a completely premature and seriously misleading statement. This is a speed bump, not the end. The correspondence from the Director General’s office does not mean innocence at all. The Director General’s office has advised that due to their increased workload they “do not look under rocks” and evidence will have to be provided up-front in sworn statements (affidavits). So that is what will happen. Starting with the most serious offences I will provide sworn affidavits (written evidence in the form of a sworn statement of fact made under oath). The DG’s office states that the complaints did not contain enough “evidence”, yet there was no evidence called, no witnesses contacted, no hearing held. On its own, my complaints contained an offer of audio files and statutory declarations and the DG’s office did not avail itself of these stated sources of evidence. Previously this evidence would have been requested by the investigating officers, however I now find that due to their alarming workload, such evidence must be provided up front to even start an investigation. No worries, I for one will fix that and jump that hurdle with pride. The truth does not cease to exist because it is ignored or simply denied. I am happy to “turn over the rocks” for the DG’s office by providing sworn statements of the facts and accompanying evidence. I completely respect the independent umpire so “Game On” with evidence served on a platter of affidavits sworn under oath. Lyn O’Connor, Ravenshoe

Rocky Creek War Memorial Committee, Councillor Marjorie Pagani. Cr Pagani was also the Service Announcer (MC) of the event on Sunday, and hosted the meet and greet the previous day. Cr Pagani is a recently-retired Squadron Leader in the RAAF, having served for 17 years as a member of 27 Squadron, RAAF Base Garbutt, in Townsville. This year, the event was expanded to include the grey nomads, as the adjoining free camping area was only partially closed for parking, leaving the nomads space. The meet and greet was attended by the families of the deceased military members who were being honoured with plaques, and very many veterans who return each year including 95 year-old Ravenshoe veteran Bud Palmer, a Rat of Tobruk , who was a guest speaker. The contingent from 2/25 and 2/31 Battalions Assoc returned again from Victoria, and the RAAF Association Cairns Branch was represented in great numbers— they have never missed a VP service at Rocky Creek! Keynote speaker was Lt Peter Gaden, OIC Health Central, HMAS Cairns, who spent both Saturday and Sunday at the site, with his young family. Thanks to Cr Pagani who hosted the guests at Allawah Retreat. Dimbulah Australian Navy Cadet Leading Seaman Reece Fieldhouse TS Endeavour, HMAS Cairns, was the cadet guest speaker and spoke of the honour and pride he has in being able to train and serve in the navy. He was formerly a cadet Sgt with 106 Sqn, RAAF Mareeba. The entire expanded event was a wonderful weekend and a credit to Cr Pagani and her committee. We hope to see an even bigger event next year! Mental Health Workshop I recently attended a Mental Health First Aid course at Mareeba Hospital. The two day course was very well-presented by Cliff Nelder and gave me an insight into the many different forms of mental illness, the challenges faced by those who suffer from them, and the best way to provide help. We can all bake or shop for someone who is ill or bereaved, but not many people know what to do when it’s a mental illness which can be more incapacitating and devastating. There are so many people in our community being impacted by a mental illness, whether they suffer an illness personally, have family or friends who do, have contact professionally or in the wider community, and it is wonderful to think that now there are many more people who are both capable and willing to offer first aid assistance to a person suffering a mental health crisis. The more we can acknowledge and discuss mental illness the better we can assist those affected. Rotary and the Bendigo Bank have done a marvellous service to the community in sponsoring this training to make it more available to the general public, and I hope that these courses continue to teach many more people how to bring some comfort to their fellow human beings when they need it. Keep those massive ever increasing semis separated from the general public, on the Range Road, especially! A second road is needed for heavy commerce traffic; this would be the ideal solution. Hopefully this can occur with minimal environmental damage. G. Power, Mareeba

AUSTRALIAN authors and the magical worlds they create were celebrated during Book Week. The Children Book Council of Australia announced the winners last week, including Rules of Summer by Shaun Tan for picture book and The Swap by Jan Ormerod and Andrew Joyner for early childhood readers. “I like the awards because it emphasises Australian authors and it directs us, in a way, towards the wonderful Australian authors that we have,” Mareeba Library Branch Supervisor Wendy Rutherford said. This year’s theme of Connect to Reading was put into action during story time with budding readers enjoying the short-listed Kissed by the Moon by Alison Lester. Ms Rutherford said the theme explored the connections readers have with each other and their books. “Reading connects us to other people and it forms bonds, especially between a parent and a child,” she said. School students didn’t miss out on the fun with St Thomas of Villanova
Parish School getting right into the swing of things. St Thomas held multiple events, including a book week themed bake-off with more than 40 cakes, poetry readings and a fashion parade where students and staff came dressed as their favourite character. Deputy Principal Leonie McCormack said the celebrations were a fun way of getting kids to engage with books. “It gives the children a chance to demonstrate their creativity through their connection to reading and they also get to be able to pretend for a day,” she said. “It’s an alternative way to engage with books; usually we go to the library and are dressed in our school uniform and we study our books in guided reading, this is a chance to do something really exciting while still making those connections to quality literature.” Readers looking to escape between the pages of a good book can borrow all the Book of the Year Award winners from Mareeba Library. A full list of the winners can be found at The Children Book Council of Australia website at cbca.org.au.

A spot of bingo and some fine tunes were on the cards for Seniors Week. Mareeba Shire Council hosted an event at the International Club, on Tuesday, August 19. The occasion gave seniors in the community the chance to have some fun, and allowed others to honour those who had worked hard to make the community what it is today. “These are the people who have built where we are – and the town that we live in and the district that we live in are the result,” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “We thank them for that and recognise them as important parts of our community. It’s important to continue the tradition of respect for our elders and respect for the people who have done the work and upon whose shoulders we stand on.”

INSPIRATIONAL CURVES
A friend introduced me to Curves in July 2012. I was concerned I wasn’t doing the daily physical exercise recommended by health professionals. I often walked past Curves and wondered what was happening inside. I searched the Curves website and I liked the idea of the circuit and its benefits. I like the time flexibility of Curves. The coaches have always been encouraging and motivating. I enjoy being supported to reach my potential - to push myself. In July 2013, I had a fall and hurt my right shoulder. In constant pain, I had no movement in my right arm. I was unable to work, drive, prepare meals and even dress myself. I was in a dark place. I could no longer work out at Curves. I kept in touch with my
Curves coach, and as the pain eased I was encouraged to come in and work the lower body. I could only do two machines - but I was moving. My Curves coach programmed exercises I could do that didn’t hurt my shoulder. I continued seeing my physio, exercise physiologist, chiropractor, and Emmet therapist, but I really felt by continuing with Curves, my confidence increased and I slowly gained more movement. It has been emotionally uplifting to be told how well I have progressed from low muscle tone to more definition, and I can use all the machines! I owe my health and wellbeing to Curves. Thank you for your emotional, social and physical inspiration.

Pink ribbon garden party By Katherine Kokkonen
Gold star for NAPLAN By Katherine Kokkonen YOUNG students are bubbling over with pride after a stellar result in NAPLAN. Mareeba State School Year 3 students recorded amazing results with 95 per cent scoring at or above the national minimum standards (NMS) in writing, 94 per cent in numeracy, 91 per cent in spelling, 91 per cent in grammar and punctuation and 89 per cent in reading. “The thing that blew me away is that 100 per cent of our female students in Year 3 got to the national minimum standard in writing— that’s awesome,” Acting Principal Mandy Whybird said. As well as reaching NMS, the NAPLAN scores indicated that one third of the Year 3 students were in the upper two bands in writing and 40 per cent of the students were in the upper
two bands in spelling. Mrs Whybird said that while NAPLAN is just one indicator of student performance, the results were very encouraging. The NAPLAN scores will be used with other information to track students’ performances and is a key part in demonstrating how well they are going. “We’ve been very dedicated to programs and explicit teaching for the last four years and these are the kids that have come through Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and now Year 3 with that same very clear focus on literacy, numeracy and embedding programs and we’ve stayed really focused on improving all the time,” Mrs Whybird said. “The kids are delighted and the kids have been just ecstatic. We celebrate that it is not just the Year 3 teachers, it’s the foundation that has been laid down.”
Shades of rose and cherry blossom filled the Mareeba lioness Club Pink Ribbon Garden Party, on Saturday. The splendid grounds of Wongabeena hosted more than 250 guests for the annual party, with the Hot Shots Big Band playing lively tunes and stall holders providing an array of sweet treats for sale. Mareeba Lioness Lyn Simpson said there had been a good response from the public for the garden party. “It’s a real party atmosphere,” she said. “I don’t think there would be one person here without pink on, except for the Lionesses—we like to wear purple and stand out. Delsi and John DeLai’s gardens are absolutely picturesque and have never looked better.”

Mount Molloy State School student council participated in the RSPCA’s cupcake day on Monday, August 18, with a High Tea. The school principal, Mrs Harrison, pet dog Sally was the mascot on the day. The children raised over $200.00 for the RSPCA. They also brought pictures in of their pets to share and displayed them on a tribute wall. Community members and families were treated to cupcakes the students made and decorated as part of their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program class. The student council wanted to give back to the community in appreciation of the fundraising and donations given to the school. They also raised funds for the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day by selling badges and pens last week. Joe Caligaris and Laurie Surgeoner.

Take advantage of your RATE DISCOUNT
NEWS from your COUNCIL
More than 9,000 ratepayers will receive their Rates notices for the sixmonth period ending 31 December 2014 in the mail soon. The notices contain all charges including general rates, water access, water consumption, the Emergency Management Fire and Rescue, and applicable waste and sewerage charges. Ratepayers have until Thursday 18 September to pay the account in full to receive a 10 per cent discount on their general rates charge. Payment can be made via BPay, Australia Post Billcode, EFTPOS including debit and Mastercard or Visa credit card, cheque and money orders.
Ease the burden on future RATES BILLS “I recognise the difficulty some people have paying their rates and charges bill, especially when it is paid as a single lump sum,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “The message is ‘don’t wait until it’s too late, pay your rates in advance’ –reduce the burden by paying more frequently and early,” Cr Gilmore said. “Council is urging people to consider setting up a periodical payment arrangement for their rates from their bank accounts, whereby funds are debited from their account on a regular basis and paid directly into their rates account with Council,” Cr Gilmore said. “By paying a nominated weekly, fortnightly or monthly amount towards their rates account ratepayers avoid having to find the full amount at rates time and can ensure they receive the 10 per cent discount by having that the full rates and charges account paid by the due date,” he said.
Kuranda Information Centre Open! The Kuranda Information Centre will be officially opened Friday 5 September at 3pm by Mayor Tom Gilmore, the staff and volunteers. The $600,000 centre was funded from the Kuranda Infrastructure Levy ($400,000) and a $200,000 contribution from Council. Afternoon tea will be provided along with plenty of local entertainment. The public is welcome!

Building a Financially SUSTAINABLE Council
“The budget is unequivocally good news for the community of the Mareeba Shire” is how Mayor Tom Gilmore has described Mareeba Shire Council’s Budget for 2014-2015 which was handed down at last month’s budget meeting. From what the potential scenario of very large rate rises and an unsustainable future this budget delivers a reasonably moderate increase with a sustainable future for this community. The Budget placed a strong emphasis on Capital Works, with more than $6 million allocated to capital items including roadwork and infrastructure such as buildings, water, sewerage and waste. Council will invest a total of $4.5 million on the road network alone. This includes $2.1 million in capital works for the region’s extensive road network, bridges and drainage, and another $2.38 million reseal program which has been allocated to maintain roads and bridges. “Two years ago it was forecast that in the event of de-amalgamation the Mareeba Shire would have exhausted all of its cash reserves and would be financially distressed within five years. This budget flies in the face of that prediction. It is true that this is a tough budget, as it must be. In the development of this budget, Council considered numerous options; all of which were difficult and some of which offered no hope for a successful future for this shire. The budget reflects what this Council considers to have been the only viable option to set the Mareeba Shire on a trajectory which will guarantee its financial future,” Cr Gilmore said. “By taking the decisions that we have, we have delivered a balanced budget with a modest operating surplus of $42,000 in the general fund and a consolidated surplus of $5.9 million. This consolidated surplus, which mainly comes from the utilities area is used to fund necessary capital works, noting our capital budget does not form part of the operating budget,” he said.

“This is very much a no-frills, down-to-earth budget that reflects the times we’re living in. This budget has been compiled in extraordinary circumstances and is framed around the historic need to establish our new Mareeba Shire Council as a respected and viable member of the local government community.” Mr Gilmore said that this was a budget which was demanded by the times. “De-amalgamation has been an expensive and demanding exercise, but we have broken through the financial constraints imposed on us and now forsee a viable and affordable future for our community.”

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY
Following the violent attack that burnt down their restaurant, an Indian family moves to rural France and opens an eatery across the road from a Michelin-starred French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Review by Leigh Paatsch: Comfort food as a comforting movie? There could be worse things wafting into your local cinema. In fact, The HundredFoot Journey is that rare serving of feelgood fare that keeps improving as its familiar ingredients settle and, gradually, subtler, unexpected flavours rise to the fore. tion, its doors are open to one and all. Its crafty proprietor, Papa Kadam (Om Puri) is every bit as much a stickler for detail as Madame Mallory, but is unafraid to play the showman to drum up further cash flow. Under the steady direction of Lasse Hallstrom (Chocolat), this delightful tale (based on the bestseller by Richard C. Morais) takes a turn for the better once the head chef of one establishment crosses the lane and sides with the enemy. The culinary craft on display is indeed mouth-watering, but it is the film’s winning collection of wonderful characters that will truly satisfy all tastes. Performances are appropriately appealing right across the impressive ensemble cast hand-picked by Hallstrom in conjunction with executive producers Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. Particularly of note is the colourful work of the charismatic veteran Indian actor Om Puri. To walk away with a Helen Mirren movie despite the best efforts of the woman herself really takes some doing.

Getting prepared for Relay
It may not be something that has crossed your mind yet – but sooner or later you will need to make a list, pack your bags, stock up on snacks and get prepared for Relay For Life! In the final few weeks before an event, I always get asked the age old question – what do I need to bring? Firstly, we encourage Relayers to be prepared for all weather - rain, hail or shine. Make sure you pack in light clothing for walking in the afternoon and morning, a warm jumper for night and something waterproof in case it rains. We recommend good walking shoes or runners too. With many hours spent on the track, it’s important you are as comfortable as possible and look after your feet. Packing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are also a must. At Relay we encourage participants to slip, slop, slap and ensure they are protecting their skin at all times. Bring along your Relay For Life shirt that you received on registration, as it’s comfortable to walk in and keeps your shoulders covered from the sun. Now that the clothing is sorted, it’s time to start thinking about your campsite. Most teams bring a tent or a marque to set up, some comfy outdoor chairs and a table, and even a mattress to rest on between laps. Feel free to bring along your sleeping
bag and a blanket to keep you warm and rested. We encourage teams to pack sufficient food and drink to last them the entire duration of Relay, including plenty of water and energising snacks. We will have coffee and food available to buy at Relay and breakfast is provided, but for anything extra, make sure you bring it along. Lastly, pack a few practical things like a garbage bag, a torch, some toiletries, your own cutlery and plates for breakfast, a mug for the coffee tent, and even a packet of cards to play in the early hours of the morning. While the list of things to bring is long, there are also a few things that we ask you to leave at home! For safety reasons we ask participants not to bring anything glass, including glass bottles, matches, gas lights, barbecues and their pets. We look forward to walking with you in just three weeks! Good luck packing – and most of all, be sure to bring along a great attitude and plenty of energy! Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on September 13-14 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register visit relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

Truck stop, grazing/farming, weekend getaway THIS 35 hectare parcel of flat land which is fully fenced, has power, water, a dam and a 20m x 9m Colorbond shed with 1 lock up bay is now on the market. Currently the property is semi cleared, with the remaining natural bush land able to be cleared. Soil types range from heavy clay (ideal for dam lining) to sandy loam. With its location being just 10 minutes north of Mareeba or 1 hour to the Cairns International Airport or 1 hour to Port Douglas, this rural acreage property lends itself to a variety of opportunities. Mulligan Highway (Peninsula Development Road) frontage provides the ideal opportunity for a truck and road train storage depot. Alternatively, the property can be utilized for cattle/buffalo grazing as it has been in the past. Or with its shed facility, can just be that weekend place to get away from it all without
having to travel too far - perfect for motor biking or four wheeling. This land parcel is almost 1,100 metres long, so you could even build your own airstrip if you wanted to. It is rare to find a land parcel of this calibre given its proximity to Mareeba and the opportunities it has to offer a new owner.

The LAND Move to disallow mango levy Mangoes are the quintessential summer fruit. However, a move to remove compulsory levies that growers pay as their fruit is sold is threatening to push the industry backwards. A vote by mango growers in 2011 approved an industry move to increase the compulsory mango levy by 1 cent per tray to contribute to funding for biosecurity issues. This increase took place from July 1, this year. However, a move from Liberal Senator David Leyonhjelm to disallow increases on the levy has left the industry reeling. Australian Mango Industry Association CEO Robert Gray said that the mango levy is essential to the future of the industry. “During the 2012/2013 mango season, there was a significant incidence of an issue called Resin Canal Discolouration. While this issue only affects the appearance of a mango it can drastically reduce the price a mango is sold for, hurting
growers back pockets. The industry recognised that this was a serious issue, and during the 2013/2014 season, used funds from the mango levy to initiate a research project to assess the issue and look at possible causes,” he said. Mango levies receive widespread support from the industry. Levies fund research and development and biosecurity measures that are used to work toward market access for mango exports, and marketing programs that ensure ongoing demand for the popular fruit. Mareeba District Fruit & Veg Growers Association President Joe Moro said it was pity that Senator Leyonhjelm had moved to disallow the increase. “This particular part is very important and is about biosecurity issues,” he said. “It has very strong support from growers, both locally and across Australia. If we don’t have it then we don’t have easy access to funds and there may be delays in raising funds if a pest incursion occurs.”
Simon Tognola was runner-up in a young dairy cattle judge competition in Brisbane.
Plan for the North Young cattle judge runner-up in Brisbane By Katherine Kokkonen
THE Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) has big dreams for North Queensland, but believed the right mix of investment and stable government policy was needed. QFF has lodged a submission to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet on the Green Paper for developing Northern Australia. Within the submission, QFF outlined a number of levers the government had at its disposal that would encourage northern development, including transport infrastructure, ports, environment, government regulation and value chains. QFF Communications Manager Brad Pfeffer said the time had well and truly
come for sensible and sustainable development and called for sufficient support for supply chain and logistics development as well as market development. “Northern development has been the subject of countless reports and studies over more than three decades, to the point where this literature could fill a library,” he said. “Further years of study and process will only continue to resign northern Australian development as a perpetual election pledge, presented as a colourful headline but without subsequent policy substantiation.” Mr Pfeffer hoped the White Paper process would translate into real policies that would provide the certainty that would allow investors to bring their capital to the region and stimulate growth.

By Katherine Kokkonen SIMON Tognola has gone from humble beginnings on a Malanda farm to the national stage. The 22-year-old competed in the Federal Council of Agricultural Societies Dairy Cattle Young Judges National Championships, in Brisbane, earlier this month. This was the second time Mr Tognola had competed on the national level and his keen understanding of dairy cattle saw him come runner-up at the championships. He was the seventh person to speak and didn’t get the opportunity to see how he judged the cattle in comparison to the other competitors. “It would have been nice to compare myself to the others,” Mr Tognola said. “It was a lot harder judging the
three classes I had to judge, knowing that I had to please the over judge. In our final class, six of us put the same cow last and we all could justify it, but the over judge ended up putting her first.” While he has only been judging cattle for the past four years, dairy runs in Mr Tognola’s blood; his mother comes from a dairy farm in Malanda and Mr Tognola has been working with dairy cattle for as long as he could remember. He attributed a lot of his knowledge to spending time with his grandfather on the farm. “He is still my biggest idol, in regards to knowledge of dairy cows,” Mr Tognola said. “I still remember the knowledge he taught me about showing cows and simple things like spending time watching them and you’ll soon figure out what they want. He taught me when I was little how to
understand cows.” After finishing school, Mr Tognola put his skills into practice and worked as a fitter, preparing animals for competition. “I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the best cows in Australia and New Zealand,” he said. “I’ve worked with the highest price dairy cow in Australia; she sold for $101,000 two years ago and her mother was an American cow that sold for $1 million.” Mr Tognola is grabbing every opportunity with both hands and will hopefully be heading to the USA and Canada next year to work as a fitter and dairy cattle photographer. “I knew what I wanted to do, but I wasn’t sure how I would get there,” he said. “When I was in high school I knew what I wanted to do, but I didn’t see it happening this early.”

Brothers feel need for speed By Katherine Kokkonen THE thrill of speeding around the go-kart track has hooked two Mareeba brothers. Friendly sibling rivalry propels Leigh and Mitch Naylor to battle it out on track, but out of the go-karts the boys are supportive of each other’s endeavours. “It’s basically neck-and-neck with us two,” Mitch, 16, said. At the Mareeba track, the brothers raced in karts that could reach speeds of up to 110km/hr but their other karts can go up to 140km/hr. “The racing is extremely competitive and many people think, ‘oh, it’s just a go-
kart race’ but we put a lot in it to win,” Leigh, 22, said. “To be able to win and beat people is a good kick.” “You just pump with adrenaline and it’s a buzz,” Mitch added. The brothers started racing when they were young and their love of the track has seen them compete at the Queensland Titles, where they race in different classes. Leigh is the Senior National Pro Queensland Champion and Mitch is the North Queensland Champion. “I never would have thought that we would have been here, doing the stuff that we do; travelling away,” Mitch said.

Week Four of the Mareeba Basketball fixtures concluded last Friday. The round of competition certainly provided a number of highlights. An excellent haul of 21 points by Mishar Saba for Red Devils Senior Mens side proved significant in their 52 to 40 win over Stingrays. While 17 points by Shana Aue was a major factor in Topshot Thunder’s convincing victory over Comets Young Guns by 20 points. The Senior Ladies encounters resulted in clear cut victories to Baiada Steggles, Gummaz and High School Divas. Certainly the stand out Junior fixture of the week was the Under 16 clash between Phoenix and Cobras. The closely fought encounter was narrowly won by Phoenix 43 to 41. Tyson Tatti (Phoenix) and Omar Myrteza (Cobras) played extremely well for their respective sides. While other players on both teams had good moments during the fixture. Another thriller was provided by Hawks and Lakers Under 14 Juniors. Hawks led for the majority of the clash, but Lakers fought back strongly over the concluding stages for an exciting 30 all Draw. Jasmine Grogan was outstanding for Hawks. While Tristan Cater played a superb game for Lakers. TABLELAND HOCKEY Round Up for 23 August 2014. The U10’s continues to be a great competition with all three teams showing ongoing improvement in their skills. In the first game Raiders took on Sharks. Both were determined to show their dominance but neither could score. The eventual nil/all draw just shows how close these teams continue to be. Backing up against top of the ladder All Stars, Sharks again showed great skill to keep the normally dominant All Stars goalless and forcing a well-earned draw.. However not to outdone All Stars maintained their winning streak with Robbie Masasso finally get a goal in the box against the Raiders. A great game with a 1/0 final score to All Stars. The U13 All Stars had to fight hard to keep an ever improving Scorchers team out of the goal box. With Abby Toshach and Hayley Fullgrabe scoring a goal apiece for All Stars it seemed that once again they would be dominant over their opposition till Joanne Elliot scored a brilliant goal for the Scorchers. A fantastic game indicating that it’s still anyone’s game in the semis and finals. Clem Lucey and Bailey Hutchinson lead the Troopers to a 2/nil win over the Vikings in the final game of the division. The U17 Division saw Malanda Magic and Totally Tilted battle it out for a win. In a game where both sides showed really great gamesmanship Charlee Maso scored a great goal for the Totally Titled Team. Abby Toshach however came back with 2 great goals for the Jaguars with the final score line of 2/1 to the Jaguars. The All Stars had a great game against the U15 Boys with a convincing 2/0 win. In the final game of the round the ever resilient Voodoos went down to the Bombers 3/1. Alice Phillips was the player of the day with a brilliant goal for the Voodoos. Special mention to Will Coleman, Oliver Phillips and Tom Watson who were standout players in the competition. The Ladies round saw Belair remain at the top of the division with a 2/0 win over Shooters. Alice Phillips scored the only two goals of the game. Pluckers narrowly defeated Cruisers with Cassie Twine and Jodie Byrnes both scoring in their 2 nil win. In the Veterans Competition Totally Holcim scored a fantastic win over Woteva in a very close game. Olive Tuurnivic put two great goals in the box whilst Leanne Godfrey of Woteva put away 1. With the final score 2/1 to Holcim the leader board reaming hotly contested. Plastered Vets maintained their dominance in the Vets with the narrowest of wins over Waterloo. Sharlene Burkitt scored the only goal of the game in Plastered’s 1/0 win. The men saw the K9’s played off against the U18 Bombers in a very fast action packed game. The younger boys were unable to match the strength of the K9s’s but kept the final score to a very reasonable 3/2. In the final game of the day Shamrocks and White Knights played a scratch match with points going to the White Knights. Mareeba athletes to take on the world The icy waters of a Canadian lake are a far cry from the Mareeba swimming pool, but triathletes Jennifer McCarthy and Kevin Davies will be taking on the challenge as part of the 2014 Ironman 70.3 World Championship. The Mareeba triathletes first met in a local swimming pool. Next month, they will be plunging through the icy waters of a Canadian lake, representing Australia on the world sports stage. The pair, who has been training partners for three years, will pack their running shoes, cossies and (dismantled) bicycles and head off to compete in the Championship, on September 7. Member for Cook David Kempton has contributed $300 towards their travel expenses to the prestigious sporting event. “It is fantastic to see Mareeba athletes taking on the world,” said Mr Kempton. “Their fitness and physical stamina can only be matched by their levels of commitment and determination.” Some 2000 triathletes from around the world are expected to tackle the 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike ride and 21.1 km run, near the aptly named city of Mont-Tremblant (trembling mountain), 140 km north-east of Montreal. Mrs McCarthy and Mr Davies both qualified for the World Championships with impressive performances in this year’s Cairns Airport 70.3 Ironman, in June. It was only the second time they had competed in the event, although the pair has tackled a number of other local triathlons, including the Coral Coast triathlon and Mooloolaba triathlon. While they are deskbound by day, Mrs McCarthy is the Director of Corporate and Community Services at the Mareeba Shire Council and Kevin Davies is an Operations Manager for environmen-
tal management company, REMONDIS Australia, both were keen recreational swimmers when they first met. “Triathlons had always been on my bucket list of things to do, so I persuaded Kevin to give it a go,” Mrs McCarthy said. Neither Mrs McCarthy nor Mr Davies expected to be competing in a world championship event just a few years after starting training. They have been mentored by long-time local triathlete Joe Pilat, who encouraged both to persist during training sessions when the going gets tough. While Mrs McCarthy was excited by the news, her training partner’s first reaction was a little different. “I thought, ‘Geez … we’ll have to train through winter’,” Mr Davies said wryly. He wasn’t joking. The pair, both married with two children, have been training every day— a total of 20 hours per week, including three to four hours in the pool, eight to ten hours on Kevin Davies and Jennifer McCarthy are headed for the 2014 Ironman 70.3 World Championship. their bikes and five to six hours of running. “As long as we don’t have to dodge icebergs,” Hairmania, Mareeba Rotary Club, Briley ConDawn training sessions before heading for a they agreed. sulting, David Kempton, Bakery on Byrnes, Infull day’s work are the norm. Gladiators go down fighting By Katherine Kokkonen THE Mareeba Gladiators put in a valiant effort for their final game, but were well and truly beaten by the Tully Tigers. The Tigers came charging out of the gate to score the first try within two minutes, setting the tone for the rest of the match. The Gladiators looked outclassed by the visiting side who won decisively 40–14. Gladiators Coach Cameron McPherson praised his team’s gutsy effort, which saw only ten of the Gladiators coming to the game fresh with the rest having played in A-reserve earlier that day. “That side had only lost one game all year so it we knew it was going to be a hard night and they tried their best and didn’t let me down—that’s for sure,” he said.
“We had nothing to gain out of the game but the boys played with plenty of ticker. It was a hard year and it’s probably good that it’s over.” McPherson said he hoped to build on the club’s existing talent next season. Six teenagers took to the field against the Tigers, showing that the Gladiators will have a strong pool of players to choose from in the future. “Hopefully they will come in and have big preseasons and come and take their football seriously,” McPherson said. The Gladiators had lost half their side during the season. This left the team on the back foot and made it difficult with the weekly training and running of the Gladiators. McPherson said there was still a silver lining to the season and
pointed to the Gladiators six wins. The team had shown determination when coming head-to-head against teams near the top of the ladder. “They certainly weren’t overwhelmed,” McPherson said. “A lot of sides who were out of the finals race would have thrown in the towel and they didn’t—full credit to them.”

The carnival brought together the best players aged 12 and under and 14 and under. Each Association in the Marlin Coast Netball Region enters one team in each division for a play-off against each other. The 12 and Under Mareeba team had a great day with
convincing victories over Douglas, Innisfail and Tablelands representative teams. The Bulls reserve team with their 2014 FNQ premiership medals by Carl Portella
The Mareeba Bulls wrapped up the final season's fixture in emphatic style on Sunday, at Borzi park. In a score line that is more reminiscent of a rugby match the bulls put a baker's dozen passed Southside Comets to win the match overwhelmingly 13-0. The onslaught stated as early as the second minute when Anthony Mete latched onto a cross from Elliott Gardener to open the scoring with the provider scoring again just two minutes later. From there came a progression of goals with no less than eight in the first half alone. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj rested key players for the upcoming final knockout series this coming weekend. Elliot gardener collected a six pack of goals while Anthony Mete slotted in five with further contributions by Victor Madrid and Robert Pendenza. Ending the regular season on such a high Alex Srhoj put aside the disappointment of the loss to the Stratford
Dolphins the previous week . Duncan Simms CEO of FNQ Football was there to hand out medals and premiership trophies to both the premier and reserve side after the match. "Mareeba will be hard to beat in the finals and Mareeba will be an excellent representative for the FNQ region in the Crad Evans in Townsville in October" Mr. Simms Said. Bulls Coach Alex Srhoj said, "I'm glad the regular season is over but from my point of view we still have a lot to accomplish as we prepare for the finals and then the Crad Evans". There will be no rest for the Bulls to savour the premiership winning moment as they prepare for the knockout semi-final which will be played at Borzi park Mareeba this Saturday night as they take on the team that has beaten them on both occasions during the regular season, however at home and with a final in their sights, the Bulls will be hard to beat. A huge crowd is anticipated at Borzi park and supporters are urged to don the orange and black to show their support.
